CONTENTS IMAGE: “Winter” by Ingunn Dybendal
Ingunn Dybendal is in the final year of an illustration degree at University College Falmouth. Originally from Norway, she chose Falmouth after her tutor at college in Oslo recommended it, and says that it’s the best advice she’s had. She says that drawing is her life, and she can’t remember a time when she hasn’t been drawing and creating her own worlds. She’s inspired by comics (especially Tank Girl), cute Japanese drawings and surreal art, is a fan of Magritte and H.R. Giger, and says that her work reflects all of that – it’s cute yet horrible, and maybe a bit funny. See more of her work this month in an exhibition at Babahogs Café/Gallery in Falmouth (see art listings for info). ingunndybendal.com • ingunndybendal@gmail.com magazine | 5

No one could control the “sun at Glastonbury or the conclusion that the Mercury panellists came to... ” magazine
The last twelve months have been particularly good ones for Guy Garvey, Craig Potter, Pete Turner, Mark Potter, and Richard Jupp – otherwise known as indie rock band Elbow. Not only did they have triumphant performances at festivals like Glastonbury and Latitude, a successful UK tour and a North American tour that went down a storm, but the band were finally awarded a Mercury Music Prize for their latest album, ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ (they were first nominated for the prize back in 2001 for debut album, ‘Asleep In The Back’).
With a solid fan base, and the constant praise of the critics, it seems strange that the band who are now being lauded as one of the UK’s best have been left off the winners lists for so long. Guy pointed out, “There are too many random factors to pin point what happened this year that didn’t happen in previous years. Artistic and financial support from our excellent record label [Fiction] definitely is part of it, but no one could control the sun at Glastonbury or the conclusion that the Mercury panellists came to...” he pauses, then laughs. “So I’d like to take the credit, it was me, all me!” Of course, as front man of the band and lyricist, you’d expect Guy to take some credit, but it’s plain as day that he’s not speaking from his ego here – it’s just a light-hearted joke. They talk about themselves as the “longest surviving uncorrupt democracy in history”, and all five members of the band are lifelong friends. Mark adds, in his gentle Mancunian lilt, “We feel very lucky to have somehow shaped this career out of the little noises that we put together. It’s been almost two decades since Guy and Mark met at sixth form in Bury, near Manchester in 1990 and together with To be able to do that with your best friends, and it take us right Pete and Richard formed the band, Mr. Soft. Mark’s brother, round the world, well, we feel dead lucky. I’m sure there have been points where all of us have individually thought, I can’t do Craig, joined up soon after and by 1997 the five-piece were this anymore, we’re not getting anywhere, but we’ve all stuck called Elbow and had a deal with Island Records. A rocky with it.” career followed, with the band being dropped and then signed with new labels several times. “What doesn’t kill us Amidst the awards ceremonies and the spiralling album sales, makes us stronger,” said Mark. “We just pick ourselves up, Elbow are forging ahead with new projects. Plans are afoot and nothing really matters other than the fact that the five for a kid’s animated film at some point in the future, and as of us still love being in a room together and making music, they’ve already mentioned, the fifth album is well underway. and that’s what it’s always been about, right from the very In March they’re releasing a limited edition box set featuring beginning.” From delicate, beautiful ballads to melancholy a new version of The Seldom Seen Kid, recently recorded at stories and pulsing, anthemic rock, the band’s sound is Abbey Road with the BBC Concert Orchestra. They are also distinctive and steeped with the gravitas that passionate collaborating with the Manchester based Halle Orchestra musicians instil in their work. Guy’s lyrics and the rest of (Britain’s oldest orchestra), plan to go out to Australia in the band’s music take you on a journey with each of their April for a few gigs, and their UK tour in March finishes up at four albums telling a different tale – from love to loss, each Wembley Arena. Mark says excitedly, “I remember one of the album designed to be listened to as an album, something first times me and Guy ever met, sitting down and watching that might seem like an outdated concept in today’s single Queen Live at Wembley, saying to each other that in a couple download crazy music industry but that underwrites their of years time that would be us… nineteen years later, we’ve dedication to make the music they love. Mark explains, “We’ve already started our next record. In January we made finally made it!” And it couldn’t be more deserved. sure we spent some time together, getting in the right frame of mind – playing different music to each other, listening to stuff together, making sure we’re all on the same page. It’s elbow.co.uk • myspace.com/elbowmusic a funny one, because now we feel like for the first time ever, Elbow tour dates in the South West: we can write a record that we know people are going to go 10 Mar, Colston Hall, Bristol [SOLD OUT] and buy. We want to do something a bit more rustic, a bit 11 Mar, Plymouth Pavilions rougher around the edges, a little bit more guitar based and 12 Mar, Newport Centre organic. And,” he points out, “We’re never ever going to sit down and try to write a “commercial”, radio friendly single, Words: Lauren Taverner brown because we’ll just end up hating it.” Band Photo: Andy Whitton • Live Photos: Shirlane Forrest Although a continuous stream of critical acclaim has followed the band for the 19 years they’ve been together, the commercial success that many thought they deserved has eluded them. But last year, the thundering, rock driven sound of single ‘Grounds For Divorce’ was all over TV on adverts and trailers, the sun shone on their epic, goosebumpraising Glasto performance of ‘One Day Like This’, album sales went platinum, and the band received three Brit award nominations for Best Live Act, Best British Band and British Album. Success finally crash-landed in the patient arms of the band, after years of hard work and ups and downs. 247 Magazine caught up with lead vocalist and lyricist Guy Garvey and guitarist and backing vocalist Mark Potter ahead of their tour in March for a chat about sun, success and sticking things out…

The Future Sound of London, or FSOL as they are often known, are regarded as pioneers in electronic music. Since Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans met in the mid ‘80s, the duo have spanned many genres, fusing elements from techno, dub, acid, trip-hop and electronica, to name but a few. Early dancefloor success with the 1991 release of ‘Papua New Guinea’ was followed by a much more experimental period, seeing the release of both ‘Lifeforms’ and ‘ISDN’ in 1994. They have adopted many other aliases such as Amorphous Androgynous, using them to explore a wide range of musical and visual styles, moving away from dance music into a more spiritual, psychedelic domain. Relentlessly diverse and prolific, they have captivated audiences both with their studio recordings and live performance. Amidst anticipation and intrigue, the pair are now set to play their first live show as The Future Sound of London for 12 years, at BLOC 2009. Gaz took some time out of remixing a track for Oasis to have a quick natter with us… You are playing live at BLOC 2009 as The Future Sound of London for the first time since 1997. What is the significance of playing as FSOL, rather than one of your other aliases? We are beginning the process of re-evaluating the FSOL paradigm with a view to a new album. The Amorphous Androgynous comes from a very different philosophical place. Now is the time to explore the FSOL dimension again...it feels relevant.
The recent advances in software have opened the world of musical creation to a much wider crowd than ever before. Do you see this as a positive or negative thing? Both. It’s great that musicians don’t sit in superior chambers of ivory towers. Negative that the sheer quantity of music available diminishes concentration span. Everyone is perpetually flicking like one giant remote control. It’s the greatest, most unfulfilling channel hop of all time! As a duo, do you both have similar intentions in the studio, or do you approach the music from very different angles? FSOL: Ying and yang...we both are quite able individually but when we pull at each other in certain complementary ways we achieve something far greater. We both uncannily have exactly the same ears as to whether something is great whatever the style of music. At its best this achieves a revolutionary sound with real heart and substance!! In recent years you have been delving into the archives. Do you see the new live show as an extension of this, or will be seeing some new material? I don’t see the live show as a nostalgia trip and the archive album releases aren’t really either. Obviously we will play some of ‘the hits’, but really we see it as a great catalyst to writing new material.
As one of the headline acts at BLOC, what can we expect How would you describe FSOL to someone that had never from the live show? An audiovisual immersive headspace, triggering and exploring heard of you? As a band – deeply contemplative immersion in a the senses and the emotions and exploring possibility!! contradictory soundfield. A 3D headspace encompassing the You are seen by many as something of an enigma. How do struggle for balance. A sonic revolution bringing mankind home in silent union. Teachings from the electronic brain. you think the ‘open studio’ interaction between you and As producers, we are anything and everything we want to the audience in the live show affects this? be. A headspace that hopefully broadens horizons, provokes If at some point we fully realise our ideas the human questions and opens you up to the possibilities... connection will really have no bearing on the emotional impact of the entertainment. Rumour has it that despite its success, you weren’t entirely satisfied with the 1994 album ‘ISDN’, due in part to technological limitations. Was this the case? And if so, are you hoping to rectify this with the new show? It wasn’t the album...by its very nature ISDN threw up many questions. It’s not so much solely about technology...more that we feel we now understand a little bit more about what we started and why potentially it could develop from here.

He’s a DJ, promoter, producer, journalist, manager, record label owner… Cornwall based Charlie G has a lot going on. He’s been making records for eight years, and has played them at parties around the globe for six, highlights including playing the main room at Judgement Sundays in Ibiza in 2007. At just 23 he’s already achieved a great deal, including setting up CGI Records and Management – his own “multi pronged little empire” producing records, managing artists, and running club nights. Last year he did three tours in Japan, a country he loves and with which he now has a lifelong connection. He ran events at NASS, Boardmasters and his local club, L2 and also came runner up as Best Newcomer to at the World Trance Awards, an event ruled by the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto and Armin (he was also the youngest nominee across all the categories and one of only a handful of UK DJs). 247 caught up with him whilst he was touring in Japan…
sales. I’ve got a really strong stable of talent from UK rising stars, to world-renowned Japanese players. From A&R to PR I glue everything together and take care of all the admin, making sure everything gets to the right people – those things some find boring, but I actually enjoy. You can have the best track in the world but without the right promotion and hype building, it’s just going to get lost in the pile, especially with the digital age. Which new artists have caught your attention recently? Although it may seem biased, it would have to be the talent on CGI Records and Management, as I picked these guys for exactly that. Will Atkinson is THE biggest new talent in trance, and the two Joes, Joey V and local lad Joe-E are real prospects. I plan to put a lot of my time into these guys. Outside of this, Vandall is a producer who impresses me with every release and he is a pleasure to work with, and Japanese producer Remo-Con’s sound is always so fresh and energetic… There are big things to come from both of them this year.
What do you think of the clubbing scene in the South West – do you think it’s thriving and healthy or could it do with a jumpstart? I do think it needs something, it’s all got very tired and Tell us a bit about your new record label, CGI Records. samey and needs freshening up. It’s hard for clubs and I’ve wanted to start up a label for quite a while. I had been promoters to take risks now, which is understandable. But making music for a few years and reviewing for magazines, that shouldn’t mean that the same old DJs and music are and hearing stacks of new material, some of which wasn’t used every month. I think the most vibrant scene down signed, but I felt had big potential. I also wanted to have full here is still drum and bass, but I hope other styles get a bit creative control of my own tracks and give them the promo more flyer space this year. There are small groups of DJs campaigns they needed. I wanted to wait till I had time to and nights that really excite me, especially the passion of focus on it, so it wasn’t just a bedroom label putting out the people involved and if everyone came together a bit tracks here and there. The label has a strong identity and more it would have a positive impact. high quality control and professionalism, and the releases have done amazingly well both in sales, DJ support and reviews. In 2008 the label had over fifty Radio 1 plays, and Charlie G & Vandall – Future Calling is released on CGI it only launched in March. We’ve had tracks included on Ministry of Sound compilations and Judge Jules named our Records on 16 Feb, featuring remixes from Will Atkinson and Joey V. exclusively signed artist Will Atkinson as his producer of 2008. Bashy
Bashy.Com (GGI/Rags 2 Riches Records) For those of you that didn’t catch Bashy’s awesome Black Boys, you need to get this to make up for it. If Bashy’s on point flow and ear for a great hook aren’t enough for you then you have to give props to any MC who namedrops Gary Wilmot. Respect is well overdue. On this latest CD he shows he has taken the US mixtape game on board and given it his own unique spin. Wanna hear some great crossover UK hip hop? Check this. Wanna support up‘n’coming MCs who are hustling hard? Check this. Wanna see why he was nominated for a MOBO? Check this… are you understanding the theme here? Aldo Vanucci

Darkroom Ep
(Urban Scrumping Records) This EP opens with ‘Darkroom’, a glitchy, haunting, techno-inspired dubstep tune that displays an impressive production technique and a refreshingly uncompromising attention to detail. Next up is ‘Kigelia’, a deep, textural, hypnotic tune, which despite being quite different from the first track is again very well put together. These two tunes are accompanied by well thought out remixes by Phaeleh and Gyu, following their own releases on this highly recommended label. DC

Glastonbury-rocking British reggae superstars (featuring Lynval Golding from The Specials on guitar) drop a version album, built around last year’s anthemic single, Highrise. This album is part of an anti-knife and gun campaign, and contributors include Studio One legend Dennis Alcapone and Billy Bragg. The original track is carried by the smooth lyrical chat of Michie One, and many of the versions here keep her vocal intact. Hard-Fi and Roots Manuva collaborator Wrongtom provides a dub version, and label-mate Mungo’s Hi Fi drops a laidback dubstep mix. In addition to the remixes, ‘Do They Ever Wonder’, featuring Banana Clan’s Jimmy Screech is also a definite winner. Arash Torabi

Dirty North
(Polar Reds) These guys are WAY too creative and open-minded to be filed alongside the runof-the-mill breakbeat fodder. Bit of the old squelchy acid synth, anyone? And before you’ve had a chance to say “What’s your name and how many are you on?”, you’re listening to a different style altogether. Yes, they use the old-school well, but they don’t bleed it dry, and leave room for plenty of other influences. They know how to make the tracks bounce, and there’s enough variety on ‘Dirty North’ to give it an album feel. My favourite track is ‘This is Acid’: proper fuckin’ ‘88 gear. Arash Torabi

of punk fashionistas, which might be why their second album is an unreconstructed, surefire winner. Dealing with singer Jon Curtis’ familiar themes of small-town pride and punk rock salvation, ‘The Wrong Side Of The River’ and the adorably honest ‘I Know It’s OK’ are the kind of simple, personal protest songs that never lose their colour no matter how many times you run them through the wash. Backbone
Spirits Of The Dead Spirits Of The Dead (White Elephant)
Thankfully, some people just can’t let go of the golden age of psychedelic rock’n’roll. Norway’s Spirits Of The Dead, for instance, have embraced the ethereal folk-rock mores of the past, downed a handful of Doors and Zep pills and let their green fingers do the walking. And if you can show me a more authentic slice of early ‘70s psyche-groove than supreme opener ‘White Lady / Black Rave’, I’ll eat my Kaftan. Backbone
The View
Which Bitch? (1965) You have to be a bit thick to fall in love with The View. How else could you tolerate the melancholy-lite of ‘Temptation Dice’ or the schmindie tedium of ‘5 Rebbeccas’? But then, something happens. ‘Glass Smash’ crashes in on a wave of celtic ambience, followed by the string-laden, Tin Pan Alley lilt of ‘Distant Doubloon’ and, suddenly, it feels like The Coral and Gershwin have gatecrashed the party. Expectations are upturned; for a while at least. Hey fan, maybe you’re not so stupid after all. Backbone
Phonemonkey Open Your Ears…
(Bitcrusher Records) Anyone on the search for mind-warping breakcore should look no further than this debut from South West beat eccentric Phonemonkey. The 12 tracks on offer provide a sensory overload of broken drum ‘n’ bass, R ‘n’ B synths, twisted pop and a few spooky atmospherics. The obscenely titled yet deftly produced ‘Monkeyc*nt’ proves the clear highlight, incorporating shards of lo-fi bleeps, million-mile-an-hour beats and a good dose of self-deprecating humour. If Squarepusher did Gameboys, this would be it. The rhythms are fragmentary, the melodies outlandish, but the record successfully pulls in a great deal of coherence and catchiness and as such makes Phonemonkey one to watch for 2009. Amy Mcgill
DEMOS HEAD OF PROGRAMMES – Plymouth troubadour, James MacGregor, and co – have produced an album that truly sets a benchmark for regional neo-folk wannabes. ‘The Magnetic South’ (released through Cough Records) oozes with the kind of stark, understated melancholy that the likes of Leonard Cohen, Red House Painters and Smog have turned into an art-form; all gently tugging chords, teary melodies and baritone resignation, with a wry nod to the cool manoeuvres of Velvet Underground. Magnificent. myspace.com/headofprogrammes When he’s not fronting Noise Annoys Simon, SIMON BISH is penning pretty acoustic tunes and crooning like Evan Dando. The East Devonian’s new single, ‘Heart Shape Sky’ (out on his own Pop Noise imprint), is a little frayed around the edges but still wears its wistful, melodica-parping ambience well. The flipside, ‘Honey Hair’, adds overdrive yet manages to hold itself back enough to maintain that intended air of indiedom. Not bad, if a little uneventful. myspace.com/simonbish As is often the case, the thing that truly lets Plymouthbased roots-rockers, THE WISHBONES, down is the vocal – a strangely overwrought and atonal creature that doesn’t quite tie into the songs. Other than that, the quintet’s amalgamation of bluegrass, rock and reggae is decent enough festival fodder with banjos, slide guitars and percussion all busily vying for attention on the likes of the politically-minded ‘Watching Lies’. But their attempt at mawkish rock anthem (‘More To Give’) is ill-advised, to say the least. myspace.com/thewishbones) Cardiff trio, DON’T TREAD ON SPIDERS, are a curiously loveable indie-fi proposition, especially when they step off the gas to reveal their vulnerable side (the minimalist ‘Together Again’). Elsewhere on the ‘Monomyth’ EP, they delve into ramshackle sub-pop, piano-led confession and slow-burning malice (the ‘60s psyche-tinged title track); all of which, when taken as a whole, showcases a band who refreshingly refuse to curb their emotional range. myspace.com/donttreadonspiders
Rising out of the ashes of underrated Exeter ensemble, Reeko, are HOOF – a trio who make a gloriously heavy racket that seems to draw inspiration from anything that unsettles. Their self-titled demo album has the thick marrow of NoMeansNo, Melvins, Black Flag and Jawbox all partially-fed into a hardcore grinder for maximum brainscrambling effect. It’s great, dynamic stuff, especially when combined with some sweet songwriting touches, as on the sardonically titled ‘I Blame Whitey’. myspace.com/hoofingmusic
Meanwhile over on Murdoch-Space… Totnes indie-prog sextet, DIGITAL BOB’s new single ‘Thank God That We’ is a curious and crunchy infusion of their trademark indie-psychedelia tempered by a Foals-like intro and passages of, deep breath, white reggae. But it’s the chorus that unites the disparate pieces to show that the band haven’t lost any of their loveable, off-kilter charm. Listen on their myspace myspace.com/ digitalbobmusic or download from digitalbob.co.uk Why wait ‘til London’s THE HYPE THEORY are famous before you start to loathe Katy Jackson’s smug croon or detest the band’s marketed punk-pop guff? Just go to their Myspace site and get the knives out now. Clearly chart-sploiking wannabes, this Paraless mulch is so studied it’s carrying a school satchel. Emblazoned with the names of a thousand equally shit bands, probably. myspace.com/thehypetheory) A funk rock groove machine. From Cornwall. Haven’t we been here, and fled in terror, before? So, with the ghost of Rootjoose hanging in the air, Truro quartet, BHODAZAFFA get their freak on with Mother Love Bone guitar hooks and archaic, nu-metal vocal snarls that show a serious lack of new ideas, but at least they don’t wear hideous jester hats. Yet. Debut EP out soon. myspace.com/bhodazaffa

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (TBC)
Dir: David Fincher, starring Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt . 2008/US/159 mins Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) is a boy born with the biology of a pensioner. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918 to the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any man’s life can be. As he grows up, he grows younger, and falls in love with Daisy (Cate Blanchett). Can their romance survive his curious condition? Another oddity from the man behind Seven and Fight Club.
01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.uk Dir. Jonas Cuaron, starring Eireann Harper and Diego Catano 2007/Mexico/78 mins An experimental offering from Mexico that featured in last year’s Raindance Festival, depicting a summer love story between teenager Diego and twenty year old American, Molly. The entire film is told through still images with voiceover providing the dialogue and inner monologues of the characters. The film explores the cultural differences between their two homelands whilst also urging us to savour life’s little blessings. Cuaron, the son of the director of Y Tu Mama Tambien, has created a memorable and intriguing film.

FAKE FIGHT PRESENTS THOMAS TRUAX, Cavern Club, 83 – 84 Queen St, Exeter, 8pm-12am, £4 Thomas Truax is an American songwriter, performer, and inventor of musical instruments. He first came to prominence as a solo performer in the 90s in New York as one of a group of musicians and songwriters (including Lach, Jeff Lewis, Curtis Eller, and Beck) who made up the antifolk movement which has since influenced the likes of Noah and The Whale. His mad instrumental inventions include the Cadillac Beatspinner Wheel, a system of spinning wheels, metal spokes and small cymbals, which, through the use of various contact mics, ’beats out’ a primitive drum beat that forms the backing to songs that Thomas then plays on guitar. IVE So off we trotted on tour again, with extra sleeping bags, duvets and thick socks, for a December tour that was so cold I was almost tempted to bite the bullet and spoon our drummer during one particularly chilly night in the van. Thankfully common sense prevailed. But first, Denver crypto-punks, GIT SOME, reassured us that there is life after Planes Mistaken For Stars (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 25 Nov) with a gnarled, filthy assault on the senses, where guitars churn like tornados and rhythms are designed solely to destroy good will. And then some. Plymouth’s TALONS were wracked with nerves ahead of their debut outing but the Southern-grilled sludge-metal mammoths needn’t have worried once the bludgeoning riffs came into play.
IVE
Switzerland quiffniks, THE PEACOCKS, never strayed from their chosen punkabilly path, with a tight primitive rhythm section and a clutch of plucky singalongs (Exeter Cavern, 4 Dec). But it was local Clash-inspired punks, THE DEAD CITY STEREO, who impressed the most; keeping things uncluttered and full of terrace chant choruses that recalled punk’s heyday without falling foul of pastiche. Former NoComply singer, Kelly Kemp, is back with a full band, and not before time (Fawcett Inn, Portsmouth, 11 Dec). Going by the name of LIVERS & LUNGS, they’re more an expansion of her solo folk-roots oeuvre, with banjo, bass, acoustic guitars and joint female singer, El Morgan, adding more colour to the palette. The result is a clutch of great songs that take Drag The River’s melancholic strum and add a slice of underground positivity. Cornish trio and former Hit The Beach starlets, BANGERS, proved their worth, delivering a vibrant, Latterman-esque style of melodic punk that could see them become the jewel in the crown of the UK underground before long. A few miles east and they’re all at it again (King Alfred, Southampton 12 Dec) with The Dead City Stereo, Bangers and Livers & Lungs putting in top drawer sets. And it’s clear to see why Swansea’s THE ARTERIES are making a name for themselves: frenetic punk rock that put a fresh twist on the scorching dynamics of mid-‘90s US big hitters such as All and Pulley; while WOODEN BULLETS’ ramshackle country-rock had all the heart and soul but not enough clarity. Early days, mind.
LUB
It was hardly the biggest of crowds in attendance but that didn’t stop Bradford’s SOUNDS OF SWAMI from making a delay-drenched hardcore noise that could have had the lobby windows of Wembley Arena shaking in fear (Shed, Leicester, 16 Dec). 24 hours later, across the Severn, a host of Welsh bands were making a positive noise at odds with the insane, alcohol-fuelled bustle outside the venue (Bar Co, Swansea, 17 Dec). A NEW DAY played fast and fierce, combining Boysetsfire earnestness with hardcore shoutiness; Cardiff trio, SOLUTIONS, have come on in leaps and bounds, comfortably settling into their No Idea-influenced swirl of dog-eared melodies and genuinely moving refrains; and local lads, THE SYMPTOMS, proffered cleanly-executed punk rock with a Leatherface snarl.
RTS
Dutch hardcore trio, ANTILLECTUAL, were clearly lapping up the anarcho sensibilities of northern England’s finest radical centre (1-in-12 Club, Bradford, 18 Dec) amidst a set of Propagandhi-esque peacepunk. It’s just a shame that only a handful of people stuck around to witness it. The night’s main draw was native Bradfordian, the inimitable CAPTAIN HOTKNIVES. And when he’s not outside venues glued to a hash-pipe, he’s busy inside them playing deceptively cute politicocomedy ditties with a nasty bite that proved there’s more to stoners than munchies and mindless mumbling. Well, this one at least. A free, punk rock all-dayer in a bowling alley, anyone? Oh, go on then (Bloomsbury Lanes, London, 21 Dec). So, amongst strikes, gutters and turkeys, a whole bunch of UK bands paraded their sonic wares to an increasingly beer-addled and celebratory throng. We turned up late so missed all the acoustic players but arrived just in time for the noise to begin. ATTACK! VIPERS! brought the hardcore growl, OK PILOT brought the hook-laden cool, we brought the extra decibels, THE COST OF LIVING brought the thoughtful politics, Bangers (hat-trick!) brought the visceral crunch, THE GRIZZLEY ENDS and COP OUT brought the melodic hardcore, APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE brought the stripped down anthems, COLT SEAVERS brought the Minor Threat beats, while a Lucha-Libre masked LOS MENDOZAS brought the drunkenly puerile crowd-baiting. All told, a great way to spend a Sunday that didn’t involve getting down on one’s knees. Much. See-ya bye.
