THIS THIS MONTH MONTH WE WE ARE... ARE... …feeling rather stunned as time seems to be flying by rather quickly – but we’re also very excited because it’s finally time for Boardmasters! Arguably the biggest event in the South West all summer, this year the organisers have pulled out all the stops for a truly spectacular event with a stunning line up (Cypress Hill in Kernow! Plymouth Pride takes place this from 14 – 23 Aug with a wide range of performances, film screenings and workshops aimed at celebrating lesbian and gay culture and overcoming homophobia. Plymouth Pride has been going since 2005, and highlights for this year’s event include the Lesbian and Gay film festival at the University of Plymouth (see our film listing pages for details) on 19 – 20 Aug, the Diversity football tournament at Goals on 16 Aug, where the Plymouth Argyle team will be on hand to coach, and of course, the main event on 22 Aug at Plymouth Guildhall, where from 12pm – 7pm there will be music, entertainment, stalls, exhibitions and more. Performances will come from the likes of soulful jazz singer Louise Parker, electro pop dancefloor filler AJ, rock/pop/dance act Charlie and many more. Prime Skate Park News
Plymouth based skate shop Prime are currently in the process of raising funds to build a skate park in the city. If everything goes to plan the owners, Lynne and Nick Marker, hope to be able to start building the park at the end of the month, with plans to open in October. Until then, it’s fundraising time! Party In The Park
The Party In The Park will showcase some of the best local bands around on the August Bank Holiday at Trerife Park in Newlyn, half a mile west of Penzance on the A30 Lands End road. On Sunday 30 Aug the beautiful park will play host to bands like iPony, Surgeons, Oracy, Call For A Hero, San Pablo, Kernow Vibration, Tongue and Groove and many more. The event will take place under marquees from mid afternoon until midnight, and there will be free buses from Penzance Greenmarket. For times, call 01736 350984. NEWS Freesound ‘09 Plymouth Arts Centre is doubling up as a radio station once again this month as Freesound radio station, an open platform for the creative voice and sounds of Plymouth. Broadcasting from the galleries of Plymouth Arts Centre, Freesound boasts a varied schedule of programs, which will be heard across the world on freesound.org.uk. DJs, artists, performers, presenters, musicians and the wider community are all shaping this experimental sonic space, with support from Deep Blue Sound, the Foyer and the station’s sponsors. Freesound will be broadcasting from 7 Aug – 6 Sept, from 3pm – 11pm daily. The South West’s most prominent dubstep night, Subheavy has a weekly slot on Tuesdays from 9pm-11pm. Plymouth’s electro superstar DJ Mitch (UFO) hosts his ‘Mitch’s Bigga Night In’ on Thursdays, 6pm-8pm. 247 contributor, Arash Torabi, will play a varied selection of punk, indie, psych, folk and more from the 60s to present day, for a one-off show on 15 August, 5pm-7pm. Cabaret Fundraiser For RLNI
Prepare yourselves for a good, old-fashioned knees-up (and score some good karma points) on Thursday 6 Aug. The Gul Surf Co. in Plymouth are holding a charity fundraiser for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) at Annabel’s Cabaret & Discotheque in Plymouth. The night will combine live music, a Gul Surf Co. fashion show, a charity auction and the hottest new thing to come out of South East London, The Showstoppers And Stocking Droppers Burlesque Troupe! Starring Cherry Vanity, Lady Lace and Pixie Petite, this classic burlesque act combines tassels, glamour, tease and more sequins than you can shake your stick at. Ooh, cheeky! Also making an appearance will be British Surf Champion Mark Harris, who will be strolling down the catwalk as part of the fashion show. He’s also donated a 1 on 1 surf lesson to the auction! The biggest live music festival to hit Ivybridge, Devon on 11 – 13 Sept is shaping up to be the best yet with bands headlining including The Days, Two Spot Gobi and Ella Edmondson at the three day festival in Filham Park. Cornwall’s Young Film Festival Wants Your Films If you are aged between 8 and 18 and have made a film, why not enter it into this year’s Screen Actions film festival run by and for young people from across Cornwall? The festival will take place in November and combines hands-on workshops, screenings and VIP media guests. Films can be on any subject but must be no more than 15 minutes in length. Last year, just over 40 films from hugely talented young Cornish filmmakers were shown at this awesome festival, isn’t it about time yours hit the silver screen too? Tiki Shaper Tour
North Devon’s Tiki Surf shop will play host to four of the world’s best shapers this month, giving the public a rare opportunity to meet these talented, revered individuals! Bob McTavish, Greg Webber, Steve Walden and Richie Lovett will be available to discuss all aspects of surfboards and surfing, drawing on their immense knowledge and experience on 17 Aug at Tiki Surf shop in Braunton. Cornwall’s cheeky promoter/record label owner and internationally renowned DJ Charlie G is moving to the bright lights of London, and as a result is holding a farewell mash up at The Office in Truro on 28 Aug. This is the final Audio:Pressure party that he’ll be involved in, which will include sets from Blame and Hospital Record’s Logistics, as well as local heroes Klimax, Benny C, Premise, MC Crisis, and a special first ever (and last ever) drum and bass set from Charlie G himself.

The Blue Mile
Plymouth has been selected as the venue for an exciting new event that aims to get people actively involved with our natural environment, providing them with an experience that encourages them to take steps to care for the health of our planet. Set up by The BLUE Project, The BLUE Mile event will take place on the Hoe in Plymouth in July 2010 and is described as a race for our environment – thousands of top athletes and other participants will descend on the Hoe to do their own BLUE Mile – either on, in or next to the water – in any way that doesn’t use power or damage the environment – for example sailing, paddle boarding, bmxing or skating. The BLUE Mile was launched last month in Plymouth when a host of top BLUE athletes gathered at the Mayflower Steps on the Barbican, including top surfer Ben Skinner (who we interviewed in June), Samantha Davies, one of the world’s top female sailors, Sara Campbell, the record breaking free diver, and Beijing Olympic medallist windsurfer Bryony Shaw. The event will also see Plymouth’s Hoe transformed with the creation of the city’s first natural sand beach to host a series of beach games, a BLUE village which will include impressive learning and activity zones, and a whole host of awesome stuff (including live music and lots more). Charity Gig At Junction
The Junction in Plymouth will play host to a charity gig on 30 August where a host of local talent will be performing to raise money for PATH, an independent homelessness charity that was initially set up in the 1990s to help deal with the increase in homelessness in the city. (plymouthpath.org). Bands performing include rockers Kernuyck, Dedhed, Minor Triumph, Icaruss and Fatty Chan. Youth internet TV station, Chew TV is looking for young people to become members of it’s Content Crew. The team of keen 14-25 year old media enthusiasts is based all over the UK and is currently being trained to help manage Chew TV, the UK’s first Web TV Channel run by young people, for young people. As well as being provided a route into this hardto-access industry, the Content Crew have been busy working the festival circuit and recently returned from the Relentless NASS festival. There, a few of the Crew got to film and interview the stars, whilst generally having an awesome time at the famous three day gig, which played host to top acts such as CKY, N.E.R.D, Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, The Scratch Perverts and Jaguar Skillz. They were also right in the mix of all the world-class extreme sports demonstrations that were going on, luckily without breaking any cameras or bones! NASS’s big brother festival, the Relentless Boardmasters is around the corner and the Content Crew is once again all over it!. Teenage Rampage Tour
The search for the UK’s best young musicians hits the South West throughout August with live heats in Falmouth, Plymouth, Okehampton and Swindon as The Teenage Rampage Tour 2009 hunts for the best musical talent the region has to offer. Run by Bristol Music Foundation and in partnership with Colston Hall and Youth Music the summer tour will see the finest teenage bands and solo artists from the area competing head to head at the regions top music venues and in front of local audiences and music industry figureheads including Conal Dodds, Oasis’ promoter, and Chris Morrison, Blur’s manager. Industry professionals will decide on the best four acts from each regional heat to play at the final on 19 September, where the bands will have the incredible opportunity to perform alongside a national headline act on the same stage once graced by the likes of The Rolling Stones, U2 and The Beatles – at Bristol’s largest venue, the newly developed Colston Hall. As well as the opportunity to play at the final event the Teenage Rampage Tour is also offering selected South West teens a chance to win studio time to lay down a track, have their songs feature on the official “Teenage Rampage Tour 2009” compilation CD and have the chance to be assigned an industry mentor and team built around their act. As well as amazing prizes for the winners the Teenage Rampage Tour is also giving young people the chance to meet music industry experts and learn about the great variety of careers available throughout their “Industry Insight sessions” held at regional heats. The sessions are run by experienced industry professionals, are completely free to attend and are a must for any young person interested in a career in music. Speaking about the tour Tim Wright, Project Coordinator at Bristol Music Foundation, said, “The Teenage Rampage Tour is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians in the region to be recognised and gain valuable experience through both playing live on stage and being critiqued by leading professionals to each of the Industry Insights sessions. An unusual new clubnight has started at The Quay Club on the Barbican in Plymouth. Inspired by the lack of “grown up,” unique nights in the city, Rambunctious Social Club is an interactive clubnight – organisers are actively encouraging clubbers to bring their ideas to the table. Hosted by DJ Griff (Jelly Jazz) and Lee Hodges, the music will mainly be swing, ska, rhythm and blues, salsa, afrobeat, cumbia and gypsy beats, but the club will also function as an exhibition space, theatre, and playground for all you creative types who fancy showcasing some of your talents. So if you’re a performance poet, or a budding photographer, or you’ve even got a strange talent that you’ve never shared, bring it along to Rambunctious Social Club for a nightclub experience with a difference. Ocean Daze
A brand new festival is set to take place in Sennen, Cornwall from 4 – 6 Sept. The Ocean Daze surf and music festival will see some of the region’s coolest bands, DJs and musicians performing alongside some well known chart toppers, as well as a surf competition on 5 Sept at Sennen Cove. Some of the UK’s best surfers will take part in the comp, which is sponsored by the National Trust. FHM High Street Honey (and local lass) Charlotte Thomson will also be there to present an award. Acts scheduled to perform include Sir Vinyl Of The Fattest, Hong Kong Ping Pong, Steph Newton, The Eyelids, Auction For The Promise Club, The Drum Summit Project and many more. There will be a campsite, food and drink stalls and a variety of other entertainment at the festival. Cornish based international disaster relief charity Shelterbox are the festival’s chosen charity, and they’ll be at the event too. Tickets are strictly limited to just 500, and if you purchase your ticket before 14 Aug, you can get it for the early bird price of £35, after that, tickets are £40 and can be purchased from cornwallscoolest.com
The Office nightclub in Truro are set to host two major competitions promoting Cornish homegrown musical talent. The EMI Wanna Be A Rock Star Competition takes place over three weeks and will see 18 bands go head to head over three weeks to fight it out for a place in the final on 27 Aug and the chance to win £500 and studio time to record their demo at the prestigious EMI studios in London. Get down to The Office on 6, 13, 20 and 27 Aug for each heat of the competition. Continuing their support of local stars, The Office Urban night, sponsored by Gravis, Attla Snowboards and Bacardi, will see 30 of the county’s best DJs welcomed into The Office to show off their skills on the decks on 21 Aug. Run by DJ Dilly and hosted by MC Benny C, the night will also feature an awesome graffiti battle between The Soup Gallery’s Soup and Haacht. First prize in the DJ comp will be £250 and more Gravis and Attla goodies than you can shake a stick at. During Falmouth Week the fun doesn’t end when the sun sets! After a day of fun on the water, Event Square will be the place to be as themed evenings from a Westcountry inspired Cider and Hog Roast party to the tropical delights of Caribbean night. The week starts with the Hog Roast party on 9 Aug, where The Wurzels will perform their hits like Combine Harvester. The next night harks back to the golden age of music with Falmouth’s Got Soul – sounds from the 60s to the 80s will get you in the mood to groove with 6 piece music sensations Soul Survivors performing on 10 Aug. Casino and Acoustic night is on 11 Aug with a mix of local singer songwriters including Ruarri Joseph, Ben Howard, Joe Francis and more (invitation only event). 12 Aug sees more live acts take to the stage including rockers 3 Minute Warning and funk band Small Wonder. A brand new surf contest is set to take place in memory of lifeguard and surfer Tom Greenaway, whose untimely passing has had a profound effect on the South West surf scene. The Greenaway Pro is set to take place on 4 – 5 Sept at Porthmeor in St Ives and will raise funds for Greenpeace, Water Aid and the RNLI. The Wombats bounded gleefully onto the music scene three years ago, with their bouncy, joy filled tunes of nightclub shenanigans and girl troubles. The three-strong band hails from Liverpool and comprises native Liverpudlians Matt “Murph” Murphy on guitar, vocals and songwriting duties, multi talented drummer/singer Dan Haggis and Norwegian Tord Øverland-Knudsen on bass and vocals. The trio met whilst studying at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) in 2003, and have gone from touring around courting the attention of A&R men to playing festivals and gigs all over the world (and they’ve even appeared on Neighbours). Their debut album, ‘A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation’, reached number 11 in the UK album chart when it was released back in October 2007, and spawned radio friendly dancefloor fillers like ‘Lets Dance To Joy Division’ and ‘Backfire At The Disco’. They’re currently working on their second album, and putting a lot of effort into not growing up. We chatted to a slightly hungover Murph, at home in London, ahead of their headline slot at the very first Falmouth Sound event, due to take place in Falmouth at the end of this month.

I don’t like it when bands bring out a second album and they’re all serious. I’ve already got an idea for one of the songs that I want to do, with us all being horrendous vampires with blood dripping down our necks…”
“Studying at LIPA was a bit like being in Fame,” drawls Murph, in his soft Liverpudlian accent. “It was a weird place. I literally saw people doing cartwheels down the corridors.” He pauses for a moment. “I never really settled in. I went there because it had a cool reputation, and I could spend my time being creative. I didn’t make many friends, apart from Dan and Tord.” He goes on to explain, “You feel wrapped up when you’re [studying] there. There’s quite a lot of pretense and a lot of students feel like they’ve made it already. And when they leave, and the job in Burger King arises, that can be a pretty dark moment.”
It’s times like these, after the initial hype has died down and before that difficult second album is released, that test a band’s capability to come up with the goods. “We’re halfway through writing the second album, and for the first few songs, I was like, oh God…” admits Murph. “You feel the pressure because of how well the first album did and the success we had. But now that I’m halfway through writing it, the pressure has kind of disappeared and I’m all excited again. So at the moment, we’ve just got to concentrate on making a better album than our first one. And we’ll give it a damn good effort. At the moment, I’m not really thinking about anything else.”
Since releasing their first record in 2006, the band have seen a good deal of success and have travelled the world – have they lived the rock and roll dream, we ask? “Touring can be tough,” says Murph. “You get a bit low, and you get cabin fever… We love the job but it actually can be quite a dull lifestyle, apart from the real highlights like being on stage, or going to awards… The rest of it is just not rock and roll at all.” So does the pressure of being in the music industry ever get too much? “Occasionally, yeah,” he says. “We played on stage at the MTV Europe Awards, and the amount of people and all the TV cameras being shoved in your face was a bit much… I was exceptionally nervous before we went on, and I’m never really nervous. You can kind of feel the pressure mounting,” he explains, “but if you ignore it, it just kind of goes away. We don’t usually worry about getting it right on stage,” he laughs. “Our performances are always different.”
“there are only so many songs you can sing about being slapped in a disco, so we had to kind of leave all that stuff behind...” Luckily, there don’t seem to be any of those moments on the horizon for The Wombats. When they started out, they were happy go lucky, maybe even a bit silly. It worked like a charm and dancefloors went crazy for their indie pop madness. Murph tells us, “I think that stage of the band died a death pretty early, but we still maintain that same attitude. We’re really passionate about the music, but we’re carefree…” With their new album in the process of being written, it’s only natural that fans and the music press will be waiting to see just how (and indeed, if) The Wombats have matured. When asked what their new material is like, Murph explains, “Everything sounds a bit heavier, and more synthy. It’s still got elements of joy that the first record had. I guess the lyrics are a bit darker – I had to really think about what I wanted to write about, because there are only so many songs you can sing about being slapped in a disco, so we had to kind of

Rumours that Murph and Tord will be touring with Panic At The Disco this summer are completely untrue, he exclaims; “That’s on our Wikipedia page but it’s not true. Imagine if we did do that! I don’t think that would be very good for our career. But then again Wikipedia said that Tord was going out with Michelle McManus. The 5 Star Pro Men’s World Qualifying Series (WQS) event is the highlight and main focus of the Relentless Boardmasters festival. The contest, which kicks off on the Tuesday (4 Aug) will feature some of the world’s best surfers, battling their way through gruelling heats in hopes of reaching the final and claiming top whack of the £120,000 prize purse. Last year top prize was taken by the 18 year old Brazilian sensation Wiggoly Dantas, his first ASP WQS title in the four to six foot waves at Fistral Beach in an all Brazilian final. This year, he’s back to defend his title against the likes of Aussie Nathan Webster, Nathan ‘The Hog’ Hedge, Hawaiian John John Florence, the UK’s Russell Winter, Reubyn Ash, Oli Adams, Sam Lamiroy and many more world class surfers…
The Vans Summer Sessions have been running at Boardmasters for five years now. 2009 will see the most complete Summer Sessions to date including the Vert skate and street skate events and a new mini ramp bmx event. Wooden Waves skate park at Trenance Leisure Park will once again host the Vans Street skate comp on 6 Aug. This is always a tight contest and the turnout is always overwhelming. UK skate titans Chris Oliver and Ben Grove were knocked off the top spot last year by Josh Young who walked away with first prize.
AERIAL ASSAULT The contest has been inspired by the Relentless TowTeam, consisting of five Relentless surfers (Dan Joel, Ben Grenata, Ben Skinner, Tom Lowe and Fergal Smith) who are revolutionising British surfing by seeking out big wave surf spots across the UK and tucking into waves in excess of over 30ft! Don’t expect to see any big wave surfing at Fistral but you will see the discipline of tow-surfing demonstrated, just with a twist! WEDNESDAY The first Beach Sessions of Boardmasters 09 boast The Blackout as headliners as they head up a bill crammed with hard rock and punk. Hailing from South Wales, they formed in 2003 and with six of them on stage its sure to be an intense show. They’re joined by Sweden’s We Are The Ocean, who are relentlessly gigging around the UK festival circuit. Local support comes from Truro’s Downtown Riots who are described as melodic punk rockers, with a female vocalist and bags of energy. THURSDAY Aussie singer songwriter Pete Murray headlines The Beach Sessions down on Fistral on the Thursday. His music consists of driving vocals, funky piano riffs and sing along melodies – perfect for sunset on the beach. There will also be a performance from Ben Howard, who grew up in Totnes, and has already tasted success, winning the Red Stripe Music Awards, touring with Xavier Rudd and Fink and working closely with surf brand Quiksilver. SATURDAY They’ve sold over 18 million records world wide since the late 80s, but now the mighty Cypress Hill will take over the Main Stage on Saturday for a showcase of classic, unmissable hip hop. Fellow headliners Noisettes have had to pull out of the festival due to commitments in the US, but they’re replaced by a DJ set from Pendulum with MC Jakes on the Relentless Stage. From Super Furry Animals, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Dreadzone (all on the Main Stage) to London synthpop outfit Filthy Dukes (Relentless Stage), Brightonian rock five-piece The Ghost of a Thousand (Vans Stage) and thumping alt rockers Pulled Apart By Horses (Vans Stage) the Saturday line up will definitely keep you entertained. After 10yrs of promoting the Devon based hard dance and old skool night, Hindsight, along with Djing and producing music, Nick the Kid hit national fame earlier this year when he scooped the Regional Hero award at the National Hard Dance awards. Nigel Muntz caught up with him to find out what Hindsight is all about. How did you feel winning the regional hero award at the national Hard Dance awards earlier this year? I was absolutely thrilled. I had no idea I was going to get the award, anyone who tuned in to Radio 1 and heard my interview would’ve realised this. It was an amazing night and I was very pleased to see fellow Westcountryman Kidd Kaoss pick up best newcomer. It was also great seeing my remix of Skysurfer – Colors make it onto the associated Euphoria/ Ministry Of Sound album. What makes a Hindsight party better than all the rest? Recently we have been booking more diverse line-ups to reflect what’s going on around the rest of the country (and abroad). Our partnership with Bohemia Nightclub, Torquay has really taken our events to the next level as it’s got the space and later opening hours to experiment a lot more, not only with DJs but with the production of our events. It’s an awesome venue! We have some massive things on the horizon including the 10th Birthday in November a joint event with HTID in December. Over the years, we’ve had some amazing times – the Summer Main Event at the Matford Centre, Exeter in 2001 really sticks out as being one the best events we’ve done, over 1000 people attended – BK and M-Zone took the roof off. Most of the early St George’s Hall events in Exeter were pretty special too.

We are planning another trip on 19 – 26 Sept for the infamous closing parties week and have a busy schedule of club nights, boat parties and pool parties planned! I put out a 12” in 2001 called Reminiscence EP but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I decided to have another go at it. It seemed a logical progression as my productions were improving and I wanted an outlet for my music (and others). The releases have been gaining great support across the UK and Europe with Tunnel, Euphoria, D Trance and Drizzly amongst others all licensing tracks for their compilations. The most successful release to date has been Enigma (Hindsight 003) – Kutski has played it on his Radio 1 and it’s been licenced to four compilations already. Support was really strong from the likes of Andrea Montorsi, Ed Real, Louk and Jon The Baptist, amongst others. Definitely my favourite of all my solo productions to date.

Hindsight celebrates 10 years of parties this autumn, what do you think is the secret of your success? Probably stupidity! If I’d have gone to university instead I may actually own my own house and a flash car by now, instead I still live with my parents and my clapped out Fiesta needs servicing! Seriously though, I’m still massively into the scene and I think the enthusiasm I had when I started is very much still there! Hopefully this comes across with the events I put on. I’ve worked hard over the last 10 years and been committed to what I do, it hasn’t always been easy but if you put the graft in, things start to happen eventually. A bit of good old fashioned luck has helped too.
Isn’t it crazy to run a label in the current climate of free downloads and no-one paying for music? Well, I’m still releasing vinyl which some would say is even crazier in these times but for me it’s just about getting the music out there. There’s not much money to be gained from actual music sales these days but there is money in compilations, radio play and publishing. Having your own output has got its advantages as it brings you into contact with other artists, so its great for networking. What’s the next release? The next release will be a vinyl release for Hindsight 004 and will be an EP featuring two tracks: Darkness by me and local nutbag Louk, and another track by me and hard trance legend Jon The Baptist entitled ‘Worst Nightmare’ which has already received a Radio 1 play by Kutski and some really positive feedback. The release date will be around late August and is being distributed by Icon Distribution.
What’s the deal with your Hindsight Ibiza trips… why not just go to Newquay, which is otherwise known as a UK mini Ibiza?! Words: NME For the uneducated, the Streetwise name is one of the underground forces behind the breaks scene in Cornwall and further afield. From humble beginnings as a record shop in Cambridge some 12 years ago, the brand has moved on from the retail side of things and is now focused on event management, in-house music labels (Streetwise Presents and Ghetto Knowledge), DJing and general infusion in the music scene. With arena’s at this years South West showdown at the Eden Project, the National Adventure Sports Show and ongoing promotion of the Cornwall’s newest superclub, Pure, it’s been a busy year to date. In between touring with Howard Marks, partying with Dave Courtney at Jodie Marsh’s wedding, late night sessions with Krafty Kutz, and trashing hotel rooms with the likes of Terry Hooligan and Ken Mac, we got the inside line from Will, the Streetwise Music head honcho. So, what’s the South West connection? I’ve lived down in Newquay on and off for the last few years and now with a young daughter we decided the area would be a good place for her to grow up. Also I love the Cornish lifestyle, work hard all summer, chill out all winter. This fits well with me as an artist as I can work during the summer on events and spend the winter in the studio and touring the world DJing. Streetwise Music (aka SWM) gets around a lot, from radio shows, to festivals. How do you ensure all these elements compliment each other? It’s all about building brands and Streetwise is like my Virgin, we do a lot of things across the music scene but always keep true to our core values. It’s a dream for me really as its never really like work as I’m always doing something I love whether it be putting on events, producing music or DJing. They all play an important part in making me who I am. You specialise in breaks, how do you see the breakbeat scene in the South West developing over the next 12 months? It seems to go from strength to strength. Five years ago there really wasn’t a scene in Cornwall, now its as healthy as any other area in the country if not more. The next 12 months will hopefully see some of the South West producers get more recognition. The likes of AVE from the Freerange DJs and the Simian Sounds guys with their Chop Shop 45 are all making killer tracks that are getting national coverage. The South West is home to some of the breaks scene underground heroes (such as Ben and Lex, Fun Recordings, Biff etc)… Why is it such a good breeding ground? The South West in general makes a good breeding ground for musicians because of the lifestyle and the attitudes of the people down here. They are prepared to put in the hard graft to get what they want. Look at Ben &
Lex; they have been slogging away for years, they opened the main stage at Glade this year and that’s huge. Name your dream event – where would it be and who is playing? As we are dreaming it would have to be at The End in London for the venue (RIP). Line up: Krafty Kuts, A.Skills, Andy C, Lofty Longtigga, Nick Thayer, Rusko, Jaguar Skills, Me and Balboa in the main room and my Streetwise Fam in the bar – Chan, T & Deetox. As a sideline, you’re heading up promotions at Pure in Newquay. What can we expect over the next few months from the self billed “superclub”? We’ve got some mammoth line ups sorted for the summer and are truly trying to make Newquay into a clubbing destination once again. Pure also hosts the only 30k drum’n’bass room, with 90k Funktion 1 Soundsytem across the whole venue… What does the future hold for you this year? Pure is keeping me busy with the line ups and promotions on a daily basis. Then I’m off on tour in September to the USA with Richie Balboa, then we are back out to Beijing for NYE, followed by three weeks in Australia touring the East Coast. Then its all about studio time, I’ve got a couple of new bits on our in-house label that I’m finishing at the moment, due out at the end of the summer and a heap of remixes to do for some other labels. TONY PLANT SURFER : ARTIST : PHOTOGRAPHER Tony Plant grew up in Cornwall and lives in Newquay. When he was 17, he was studying Scientific and Technical Drawing (he can draw photographically and describes it as mind numbingly dull) but quit his course to travel the world, surf, and learn not to draw photographically. He then went on to study fine art painting at Chelsea School of Art. He graduated in 1990 and hasn’t stopped since… His latest painting work includes installations using paint in natural surroundings, and he likes to place work unannounced into unexpected situations. He got into surf photography after swimming around on the Cribbar during a big tow-in session and has taken photos of top surfers all over the world. He told us, “Tow surfing at Aileens and the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland is a terrifying and beautiful place to be. When I jumped off the jet ski to swim into position it was such an assault on my senses that I threw up! Watching your friends falling off house sized lumps of water is an exhausting thing to watch, you suddenly realize how limited your vocabulary is. I’ve fallen off jet skis, been hit by BIG waves, vomited underwater, lost entire sessions when all the shots have been blurry, I’ve bounced off the reef, been hit in the head, arse, face, back, legs and wallet, lost plane tickets, swum through swarms of stinging jelly fish, dealt with idiot film directors, half frozen to death and been hassled by the picture desks of big national newspapers. PROFILE:MIDAS Midas has been painting for about nine years, since someone bombed up his primary school in the late 90s, which inspired him to start tagging old barns with sheep marking spray (and blaming it on the kids from the estate). A couple of years later, whilst watching The Bill, he learned more about graffiti and started sketching and tagging with mates from school. Now based in Exeter, Midas has lived in Plymouth, Bristol, Swansea and Cardiff, but over the years he’s left his mark in France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain and the Czech Republic. He told us, “I never buy specific colours. I just make do with what I’ve got. I don’t think you can define my style too easily. It’s European, for sure. I’m influenced by locals, or people I paint with. Virus, Ames, Roms and people I’ve seen when I’ve travelled, like Nigmo, Afiler and Norma. I like my pieces to be different to the stuff around them. Sometimes I’ll add aspects of current affairs, mainly the problems we’ve had with the police force.” He adds, “I’d like to shout out to my long time friends Joer, Roms, Mad J, Eel and Plopsy, my brother Ames, Mr-E and everyone who has given me a sofa, a point in the right direction, and other helps along the way.”

With guests like Snoop Dogg and B Real from Cypress Hill, and production by the ever on-point Alchemist, this is an essential purchase for anyone that likes their hip hop dark, head nodding and non jiggy. This is a collection of cover versions from the last ten years of Tru Thoughts releases and is a funky, soul filled jam from some of the best artists around. Highlights include Alice Russell and Nostalgia 77’s searing version of White Stripe’s Seven Nation Army, TM Juke and the Jack Baker Trio’s cover of Fedde Le Grand’s Put Your Hands Up For Detroit, and Jumbonic’s interpretation of The Stroke’s classic Last Nite. This is a move away from Dialog>’s Plump DJs-favoured deep house debut album, ‘Music For Imaginary Movies’. Spacey, ambient and cinematic capture the general vibe here. The title track creates a similar mood to FSOL’s ambient classic, ‘Papua New Guinea’. But a lot of different musical influences are weaved together on this album, and he doesn’t just stick to one tempo. Sometimes dark in places, but chilled all the way. Arash Torabi

(Z Audio) Former D&B producer (with releases on Grid, Zombie & Up Yours), Rob Sparx has more recently been dropping dubstep. Forget his bass banger, ‘Sludge’ (Audio Phreaks) – ‘Trooper’ has a more textured, dubbed-out and laid back approach. ‘Messiah Dub’ comes with melodica and reggae vocals, and there’s more dub with ‘The Prayer Re-Dub’. Sparx shows that he’s not afraid to experiment, giving ‘Trooper’ an

He isn’t always quite so adventurous with his vocal melodies though, but the songs on the album still stand out, thanks to great arrangements and creative production methods. I’m a sucker for the sitar, and you can’t argue with a shit-hot rhythm section. Highlight: the psychedelic-come-Bollywood funk-out of ‘Free Love’. A welcome return. Arash Torabi

Everyone’s heard of her but no-one’s listening, right? Well pin ‘em back, indie cynic, ‘Lungs’ is an, at times, masterful collage of timeless pomp-pop, with echoes of Kate Bush and Enya. Unfortunately, it’s tempered by a tendency to overdo things, Winehouse style, in the misguided belief that normal people live out their excesses, vicariously, through other people’s songs. No matter, because like all self-absorbed popstarlets, she’ll take it all in her lofty stride. Backbone

OCD Go Go Go Girls (Wichita) If you thought that Nottingham’s Lovvers might crawl out of the none-more lo-fi dustbin for their debut album proper, you’re sadly mistaken. ‘OCD…’ picks up where mini-album, ‘Think’, left off: scraping riffs off the bottom of their shitty hi-top trainers and turning them into songs that make first-wave US punks like The Voidoids and The Germs sound like Yes. And if the unholy strata of distortion don’t get you, the effortlessly cool new wave tuneage will. Backbone
2 kick-ass vinyl EPs from the ever-eclectic London dubstep label, Studio Rockers, with releases now into double figures. Cotti & 2Nice come through with a nice reggae rumbler, featuring two mixes of the title track, and the more electronic ‘Lost & Found’ on the flip. Hackman deliver a couple of meaty Mariachi El Bronx double-time tracks on the A side, the second of which, ‘Illusionz’ uses an inventive piano High Contrast Confidential line with a garage bass that throbs over a (Wichita) busy snare pattern. ‘Nocturne’ on the other side keeps the bass steady and wobbly over Don’t laugh. It’s not a joke. It’s not ironic. pounding halftime drums. We like. It’s Mexican folk music appropriated by LA Arash Torabi punks. And they mean it. Man. The only thing that gives the game away, and lets the side down a touch, is the Californian crooning. But it would have been terribly CHALI 2NA ill-advised for Matt Caughthran and co to Fish Outta Water put on Cheech & Chong accents. Thankfully (Decon) the band’s complete command of Mariachi mannerisms, as heard on the likes of Fish Outta Water marks the long awaited ‘Quinceniera’, shines through. Chido! solo debut album from former Jurassic 5 Backbone MC and artist associated with the group Ozomatli. Chali 2na has evolved into an artist with depth, and this album shows it, The Cave Singers where in the Jurassic 5 albums we never Welcome Joy got hear his life stories in so much detail. (Matador) Righteous Way demonstrates just this, as Chali reflects on his parent’s relationship Second album in and Seattle post-folk trio, and tough decisions they had to make The Cave Singers, find themselves in good, during his childhood, to his own personal retrogressive company. All the current, choices he had to make as a father to revered talk of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and his own child. Other stand out tracks are Midlake has thrust Pete Quirk and co into When Will I See You Again featuring Elzhi a celebratory coterie that cherry picks from from Slum Village, also uplifting vibes from the folk-rock mid-‘60s to the mid-‘70s in Don’t Stop featuring Anthony Hamilton, a haze of Led Zep prairie jams and hippy and Keep Goin featuring Choklate. On this album there is enough to keep the die hard ethics. Nothing wrong with that as long as the results are as resplendent and Jurassic 5 fans happy and enough to gain suggestive as ‘Summer Light’ and ‘Shrine’. the attention of new audiences for Chali. Eschewing the need for label assistance, the band instead focus all their energies on trying to write songs that will resonate far beyond the inevitable influences that attach themselves to new musicians. With bells on. ‘We Are Just Flies’ and ‘Crying In The Spotlight’ are both exemplary slices of dramatic indie-rock that any of their contemporaries – The Editors, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers – would be proud to put their names to. Best of the bunch, ‘I Am’, brokers the deal with some disgruntled angst, while ‘Lost In A Trance’ wears its twinkling, indie melancholy well. North Devon quartet, THE COUNTERFEIT CLUB released their debut album, ‘These Are Interesting Times’, on Cheeky Monkey Records in June but the band seem too undeveloped to be releasing a full length at this stage. It’s not a bad album, per se, and they have some good ideas, but they still seem to be dragging their Arctic Monkeys influences around like a comfort blanket; while some of the song segments sound amateurish and unrealised. Next time, I suggest that The CC demo their songs first and maybe get some impartial and informed advice from other bands and individuals before committing to tape. myspace.com/ thecounterfeitclub
Portsmouth’s THE DAWN CHORUS are one of that rare breed of bands with a songwriter much like, say, Cursive, who understands the inherent beauty of words when they’re written in the right order. The melancholy-soaked folk-pop on debut album ‘The Big Adventure’ (released through Jelly Maid Recs) is the stuff of roots legend: the opening salvo of the title track (Parts 1 and 2) honouring the tradition of songs that paint lucid pictures designed to pull at your heartstrings without resorting to sentimentalism. When Kyle Euans sings “As I kick these boot heels I can finally fly / Over valleys and hills where my dear mother died” or when the gorgeous Arcade Fireesque outtro to ‘I Can Be Anything’ drops, it’s hard to hold back the tears. Bristol solo singer/songwriter, OXYGEN THIEF, clearly mourns the day that Reuben split up, to the point where he attempts to recreate the band via one acoustic guitar and the layering of frenetic vocals. To be fair, it’s not bad but the likes of ‘Camera Shy’ are a difficult listen, ravaged with atonal chords and shoe-horned rock dynamics to the point where you wish he would just recruit a drummer and bassist and be done with it. Things make more sense when he works within acoustic limits and introduces some digipercussive elements (‘Ours’) to create something, at once, more rounded and listenable. It’s clearly derivative and Americanised but not in a way that would evoke a hateful tirade. myspace.com/weareunderbrightlights Plymouth indie-rockers, THE QUANTIZE, are another bunch to add to the list of city musicians whom you sense will go onto greater things, within or without the band. Encouragingly, on their two Myspace songs, vocalist, Matt Olver, understands the concept of working within your limits, proffering a fragile yet weighty croon. Equally, the band don’t try hard to be something they’re not, keeping things solid and believable. Good work. myspace.com/ thequantize The name doesn’t make much sense but Cornwall’s AUCTION FOR THE PROMISE CLUB clearly harbour talent beneath their edifice of scenester posturing. To these ears, however, ‘See Through’ and ‘Under China’ are merely passable slabs of histrionic indie-rock that struggle to take shape, while Zoe White-Chambers’ uber-breathy ‘80s croonage leaves me feeling a bit cold. myspace. com/auctionforthepromiseclub So I log onto THE PRETTY JACKS’ page to write about their new release, ‘Tell The Queen’, and it transpires that the Devonian quartet have called it a day. Not that the world will miss another bunch of artless wannabes in skinny jeans who probably lamented the passing of Towers Of London. This exhibition aims to raise the standard of the local art scene, by creating new installations and a neutral ground for fine artists and street artists. The exhibition is organised by Exeter based artist Form 82, who also hopes to create a hub of creativity, providing non-academics and “hard to reach” people with inspiration, proving that street art is just as valid as fine art and that if you work hard enough, you can still succeed without a mainstream art school route. Supported by charities Book-Cycle (see book-cycle.org – they host monthly “Bring Your Own Art” exhibitions), Snow Camp and The Bridge Collective. Art will take the form of graffiti and will also use warehouse rubbish left by previous tenants. WIND BARBS, The Hoe, Plymouth, plymouthartscentre.org The flag poles on The Hoe in Plymouth are the exhibition space for this public art, produced by Tim Knowles in association with Plymouth Arts Centre and Plymouth City Council. A series of twelve white flags, each with a meteorological symbol (called a barb) that is used to indicate wind speeds. The flags appear similar, but are all made from different materials, so that each flag only begins to fly at the wind speed indicated on it. A celebration of the wind, this art work is a cross between installation and meteorological device.

The inspiration for his work came from a sign that he produced for a photographic exhibition nearly three years ago. To make it stand out on the side of the road he painted it bright yellow and stuck plastic flotsam from the local beach all over it. He had more comments and interest in the sign than the photos that he was trying to sell, the penny dropped that he might be on to something. “My work is about the journeys that all these little pieces of rubbish have been through to get to me. They’ve all got a story and a background. Environmentally they also have a strong message, but most of all I love challenging people’s perceptions of what is pretty, and colourful, even beautiful, when all it really is is a pile of rubbish picked from a Cornish beach.”

Singing in a cabaret club where she earned the nickname Coco, Chanel entranced several high society men who aided the development of her remarkable career. A succession of relationships collapse after two or three weeks, and the only continuities in his life are his work and his burgeoning friendship with a female supply teacher, Judy. Both are threatened as Jim’s quiet desperation boils up towards the surface in this touching and engaging film. Part of Plymouth Pride 2009.

The pleasures come thick and fast in this elegant romantic thriller from Hitchcock’s glory years in Hollywood. Cary Grant is perfect as advertising exec Roger Thornhill trying to clear his name in a labyrinthian but always lucid plot. With its ambiguous femme fatale (Eva Marie Saint almost transcendently beautiful), constant witty banter, and absolutely virtuoso set pieces, this is the perfect Hitchcock thriller. Underscored with Bernard Herrmann’s superb soundtrack – North By Northwest remains impudently sexy, glamorous and consistently entertaining.
Billy Crudup. 2009/US/145 mins There are two great reasons to see this film: Johnny Depp on excellent form as the charismatic Dillinger and Michael Mann, a brilliant director working in the genre he is most comfortable with – crime thriller. The film is about the legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger whose charm and lightening fast heists made him the target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent Melvin Purvis’s (Bale). A folkhero to much of the downtrodden public who had no sympathy for the banks Dillinger was raiding, he became notorious and idolised. The film reproduces depression era America in wonderful detail and is the best film of the summer blockbuster season.

It follows a non linear narrative over a span of 500 days from Tom’s point of view as he goes from moments of crushing depression to ecstatic happiness (indulging in a fantasy song and dance sequence at one point).

This directorial debut by writer Carlos Cuaron has its twin stars playing non-too-smart country brothers falling into all the traps of sudden fame after they are recruited to become professional football players in Mexico City. The film itself is ultimately a fast-paced colourful sports story with the sex-and-drugs rise and fall of the pair – and inevitable rivalry – played out mostly for laughs. It’s fairly knockabout stuff and could make claim to be the greatest football film ever made.

The cast features hot Brit-talent Simon Pegg as Scotty and fresh from his turn as Sylar in Heroes, plays Spock. The effects are out of this world, and this reinvention of the Star Trek franchise is a thrill ride at warp speed. Aldo Raine (Pitt) and his Basterds, a squadron of ruthless Jewish soldiers, must help the Allies wipe out the German High Command at a film premiere. The cinema, however, is owned by a vengeful Jewish survivor with plans of her own. As this is Quentin Tarantino’s take on the war movie expect references to the Dirty Dozen and any number of obscure genre films in amongst the snappy dialogue, and ultra-violence. Should be gloriously entertaining.

So where were we? Ah yes, half-way through our UK tour. Next stop, Plymouth, of all places (White Rabbit, 12 Jun). Joining us were Preston’s and Falmouth’s finest, FAILSAFE and BANGERS, respectively. The former’s needle-sharp, inspirational melodi-core would have the scene kids slurping from their a-holes if they were from Massachusetts; while the latter’s honest-to-goodness punk rock reminded us of why we all fell in love with Jawbreaker back in the day. (Although, admittedly, I didn’t as I was too obsessed with the goingson in Washington DC at the time.)

Back in Brighton, reconstructed Surrey punkster, DAVE HOUSE was kicking a bass drum, strumming an acoustic guitar and playing the odd backing track whilst crooning inoffensive, indie-pop vignettes to his heart’s content (Prince Albert, 14 Jun). At times, however, it felt like he was playing in a library, such was the level of neighbourly decorum in the venue. My heart was more in tune with headliners, Buffalo New York’s LEMURIA: a fem-fronted indie-punk trio whose tuneful cheer harked back to the powerpop halcyon days of Superchunk et al. Meanwhile, local musos, HOT DAMN’s faintly mathy instrumentals were a pleasant distraction from the headache-inducing heat. We left Brighton under a golden sun. We arrived in Norwich under a torrential downpour (Marquee, 15 Jun). Thankfully MUSTARD CITY ROCKERS made the treacherous journey worthwhile with their obstreperous folk-punk, where the adage ‘less-is-more’ clearly does not apply. With seven members all busily vying for attention via accordion, guitar, double bass, banjo, tin whistle, drums and – indeed – washboard, things did tend to get a tad cluttered up there, especially on the faster songs, but there was no denying the band’s commitment and crafts(wo)manship. Before them, DUMBFOUNDUS impressed with their slide-guitar blues but why they saw the need to incorporate an effects-laden (and barely audible) didgeridoo player into their sound was beyond me. Our first time at the Purple Turtle in London. I liked it a lot (17 Jun). PJ & GABY and ex-Filament, JONNY ONE LUNG, opted to play unplugged on the dance-floor and were all the better for it. One Lung, in particular, allowed the intimacy of the setting to inform his Bragg-esque rants and raw emotional delivery. Previous tour buddies, Mustard City Rockers and Apologies I Have None, both put in decent sets but headliners, anarcho-folkpunk trio, MISCHIEF BREW, seemed far too pedestrian to warrant the fervour with which they were received. Sure, they evoke the spirit of community, individuality, campfire wisdom and Woody Guthrie, but when the songs sound like stripped-down Levellers cast-offs you’re left wondering whether anyone in the crowd has any sense of discernment whatsoever. We concluded the tour with three northern shows courtesy of our friends from the ‘Shire, SOUNDS OF SWAMI; the best of which was nestled in the picturesque South Pennines parish of Keighley (Cricketers, 21 Jun). Swami have come on a lot in the past year, developing into a Rival Schools-esque beast that managed to straddle the line between hardcore and hard rock without sacrificing either. When he stands rooted to the ground with his eyes closed for ‘The River’, it’s corny. When he thrusts the mic into the face of a bewildered eight year-old boy, it’s corny. When he gyrates on his cementedin microphone stand, it’s corny. When he recites mock-preacher sermons and crowd-pleasing soundbites, it’s corny. When he crosses swords with fellow guitarists, Nils or Little Steven, and breaks into another 12-bar solo, it’s corny. But it’s also heart-swelling, facemelting, utterly euphoric and inspirational genius. Especially when you get to witness ‘Born To Run’, ‘Thunder Road, ‘Outlaw Pete’, ‘Because The Night’, ‘The Ghost Of Tom Joad’, ‘Hard Times’ and 25 more songs in the flesh, on a rainy night in Dublin, sung by a heartland rock legend whose mere presence is enough to, if not change, then at least enrich lives. Eden’s Arts Café celebrates its first birthday on Friday September 4th with a special birthday party. Having played host to some of the South West’s finest in live music and arts at The Core education, arts and events hub this year, the monthly arts’ café night is now gearing up for a site wide showcase, taking over the Link area between the Jungle and the Med biomes. Surf brand Quiksilver have launched the ultimate Unsigned music search this autumn in conjunction with Gibson Guitars and MySpace. They are searching for a mix of talented bands, solo artists and an enigmatic rock chick who can either be the front woman of a band or a dynamic female solo artist. Winners will be invited to play at the Quik Pro France WCT surf event in Hossegor on 23 Sept. Other performance slots that can be won include the Tony Hawk Show in Paris, launch parties and film premieres, and the winner will also receive £500 worth of Quiksilver clothing each season… To enter, visit myspace.com/quiksessionsunsigned and submit a short clip of you or your band performing your favourite song.
