NEWS Get Down To The Boom Town Fair

THIS THIS MONTH MONTH WE WE ARE... ARE... Loving long hot summer evenings chilling with our mates, BBQ’s, ice cream, the cool limited edition Nixon watches and the festival season getting into full swing with Escape into the Park and Beach Break Live this month. So, summer might be here at last, the weather twitchers say it might be the hottest for a while, fingers crossed it won’t be a wash out like last year. On that note, why is it people always go on about the weather, always complaining it’s too hot/cold/wet/ dry/damp/sunny/ cloudy/whatever… Don’t they have anything better to talk about? Evidently not, as just proved here! I’ll quit moaning, and just get on with it – you have four weeks worth of our hard work in your hands, read it, respect it, recycle it and next month we’ll write something worth reading here… 8|

Exclusive Signing Session with High Contrast One of D’n’B’s hottest properties, High Contrast is holding a special in-store album launch and signing session at 4pm on Sat 6 June at Catapult Records, Cardiff. Offering a rare and unique experience to meet and hear High Contrast play a set in the most intimate surrounding, there will also be giveaway’s and signings so bring your back catalogue 12`s along for your keepsakes and join in the celebration of Cardiff’s local hero! High Contrast has changed the face of drum and bass and is recognised as an exceptional British dance music act and successor to the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx and Underworld. He was signed to the influential Hospital Records on the strength of a minidisc he handed to London Elektricity when they visited Catapult back in 2000. “When they (Hospital) first started out, they were complete outsiders to the scene.” says Lincoln, “Their tunes didn’t get much play from any of the big DJs and they just weren’t thought of as very Jungle. Now, they’re arguably the biggest label in the scene, the whole genre has embraced the kind of sounds the label pioneered”. Hospitality – the rave department of Hospital Records – put on the biggest drum and bass nights in the country, hosting events in every major city. Lincoln recalls “Cardiff was the first town outside of London to put on a Hospitality event, way back when, at the humble Moloko venue. So it’s great to see how far we’ve come and how big the events are now.” Appropriately, High Contrast is headlining Hospitality’s biggest ever event in the Welsh capital, with the Aperture-hosted bill also featuring Goldie, Noisia, Cyantific, N:Type, Logistics, Icicle, and loads more at the Great Hall, Cardiff Students Union on Saturday 6 June - tickets £15, from Catapult. It’s going to be a big weekend of the D’n’B community!

Bristol Festival Dates

Upfest Paint Expo

Over 150 street artists are descending on Bristol next month as part of the Upfest 09 festival for urban art. Taking place at a host of Bristol’s hippest venues on Saturday, June 6, the festival will see exponents of all types of urban art – including graffiti, stenciling, pasting, screen printing – daubing and decorating the city centre with colour. Still only in its second year, the buzz about the festival saw all the 150 registered places for artists fill up within days of launching. Organiser, Stephen Hayles, said there is a clear demand for a forum like Upfest. “There has been an explosion in the urban art scene in recent years,” he said. “Its artistry and accessibility has captured the public imagination like never before. With Upfest we’re offering a focal point where people can get together to see some of the best artists in the world and learn more about it.” With some of the biggest names on the scene including French master, Guy Denning and the British artists Inkie, Hush and David Walker painting live - Stephen said the base of artists who attended last year’s festival has established a vibrant community that is forming the backbone of Upfest ’09. Taking in seven venues across south Bristol - including the Tobacco Factory and new venues, The Grain Barge, View Art Gallery and Art Space Live Space - these artistic arenas will allow for people to observe and take part in a multitude of art forms. With attractions for all the family, the festival will also feature children’s areas, sound systems and urban dance performances. Admission to all venues is only £4, more info at upfest.co.uk. Wor ds: N ME/ LTB

London based production duo Cha se & Status really do start as they mea n to go on. Aka Will and Saul, in the past year they have not only permeated the drum and bass industry but succeeded in convincing several drum and bass labels to take a risk by putting their money on somethin g a little different – an unfeasibly clever feat in these times. Their current album ‘Mor e Than A Lot’ (on Ram Records) received the Best Album Award at the 2009 Drum and Bass Awards in Birmingham at the beginning of 2009 and their current singles, ‘Snogg Dog Milli onaire’ (feat Tanvi Shah) and ‘Against All Odd s’ (feat Kano) are smashing radio airwaves and dancefloors across the UK right now. Chase & Status are less concerned with chasing their status and more concerned with making qual ity music. If you don’t already know about these rising stars, we suggest you get to know them… Where and when did Chase and Status begin? We met through mutual friends, and our mutual love of music – and going out, week in week out in London to raves like One Nation, Roast and going to the End religiously every Friday. Our name s are boring tags we used to write as kids. How would you describe your soun d? What stamp do you put on a track that will make people think, “That’s definitely a Chase and Statu s track!”? We’re known well for being versa tile and always trying to come with something different – we like to use a lot of vocals in our tracks and make music that will work well in the car as well as in the clubs . You guys have been around since 2003 but you’ve only just released your first album – why is that? Our first releases were breakbeat/ early dubstep on Vehicle & Bingo in 2003, then our first drum and bass release was on Renegade Hardware in 2004. Our album More Than Alot came out in 2008, so it’s only been 4 years of releasing drum and bass. We think that releasing an album any soon er would have been premature – we felt comfortab le releasing it when we did. What has been the biggest achie vement of your career so far? Our biggest achievement has been selling in excess of 50,000 units of More Than Alot in seven months. You’re playing a lot of dates this summer – and it seems like pretty much every festiv al going – which ones are you looking forward to most? It’s a difficult question to answer as there are so many great ones that we’re doing but NASS festival, Glastonbury, Dour and Exit festiv al are definitely going to be high points of the summer festival season.

Chase & Status are less concerned with chasing their status and more concerned with making quality music What can we expect from the Chas e and Status live show? If you check our chaseandstatustv page on YouTube you can watch our first ever live show from the Radio 1 Big Weekender in Swindon from May… We will have lights, visual videos specifically made – appearances from Plan B, Kano, Takura, Mc Rage and the exceptional Andy Gangadee n on the drums. What do you prefer doing – DJ sets or live drum and bass sets? Whats the essential difference between DJing dnb and dubstep and playi ng it all live? We’ve only had one live show as of now so it’s hard to say but the live show is definitely on a grander level. We still love DJing as you can show off your mixing abilities and take the crowd on a journey in many different directions, but with the live show the tunes performed in entirety get a great reaction and it’s a great feeling to be taking music from the studio and performing it with a band. What kind of atmosphere do you aim to create when you play? We intend to keep the energy level s high and take the crowd to different places – ultimately we’re here to get people dancing and enjoying them selves and that’s what we aim to do every time we play – be it DJing or performing live. If you could remix any artist in the world, who would it be and why? We’re currently remixing ‘Death’ for the White Lies and they are definitely the band we’d most like to remix. Their album is our most favourite album in a long time and the vibe they’ve brought to this record is fantastic, deep, musical and drenched in nosta lgia from the 80s. Who would you most like to work with in the drum and bass world? We’ve worked with some great peop le and intend to get in the studio with Shy FX again and finish off a beat we started many moons ago! Catch Chase and Status, playing live at Escape into the Park, Swansea on Sat 13th June, Beachbreak Live in Cornwall on 16th June, Clockwork , Bristol on 19th June, Dellers Wharf, Taunton on 25th June and the National Adventure Sports Show (NASS) at the Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Malle t on 10th July myspace.com/chaseandstatus

Words: Lekan Latinwo

At just 24 years old, Ashley Thomas (better known as the MOBO nominated grime/hip hop star Bashy) has had a pretty busy life. Growing up in West London and Dominica, he’s been both suspended from school, and accepted into the Brit School of Performing Art. At 16 he was broadcasting on pirate radio alongside the likes of Wiley, Dizzee and Kano. He’s worked as a bus driver and a postman, and is an award-winning musician, with an Urban Music Award for most inspirational artist presented to him just last year. On top of all this, he’s set up his own record label (Ragz2Richez) and worked on the soundtrack for British crime flick Adulthood. He shot to prominence in 2007 with the release of the anthemic ‘Black Boys, and was immediately noticed by Damon Albarn, performing on stage with him at the Love Music Racism Rally in London in 2008, and now working with Albarn’s music collective Africa Express. Bashy’s debut album, Catch Me If You Can, is out this month, so Lekan Latinwo did his best to do just that ahead of another busy summer…

director, Scorcher and Wretch 32 and how they wanted to be portrayed in the project. The video has been receiving a lot of hits on Youtube and the interest is growing too, it’s been great to see and hear the positive feedback from it. Tell us what we can expect from your debut album, and what’s your favourite track? You can expect a vast musical collection of different sides of me, this album is my life, and it shows my journey and growth and my ups and downs in life. I hope everyone can relate to it and enjoy it. There are collaborations with Jamelia, Loick Essien, N-Dubz, Toddla T and Yolanda Brown on there. One of my favourite tracks is Copy Cat, produced by my cousin Self Taught Beats; a brilliant producer that you need to look out for. When I first heard the instrumental, he had his daughter on the hook and it blew me away, so I made sure I sat down and came up with something special for it, when you hear the track you’ll know…. How did you manage to hook up with Africa Express? I did a show with Africa Express in Liverpool, and basically Damon Albarn was liking my music and my vibe so our management kept in contact and that resulted with us performing over in Nigeria, Africa last year, myself along with Kano, Tony Allen and a host of other talented and blessed artists. That was a great experience that I will never forget. This year we are doing some more shows together, we’re coming to Bristol to perform and we will be performing at Glastonbury Festival too which is going to huge, I performed at Glastonbury last year and I loved it.

How has life changed for you since you released “Black Boys” and “Kidulthood To Adulthood” singles? Life has been good, it’s changed a lot for me, I used to drive the bus before all this, but now I make a living from music, I get a lot of recognition from my fans when I’m out and about, After you have released your album, what other plans do they want my autograph or take a picture with me, it’s be you have on the horizon? been good and I feel humbled and blessed. I got a few things coming up, I will be acting in a national play called “Marcus The Sadist”, and I have got a lead role Why didn’t you come out with your album earlier, off the in a new film but I can’t give you any details yet, I am also back of the success you received from “Black Boys”? working as a musical supervisor on a forthcoming British film I wanted to take my time with my album and not rush it. I called Freestyle so I am trying to keep busy. Catch Me If You want it to be something that I can be happy with rather that Can ain’t only the title of my album, its my life… do a rush job, then look back on it and think I could of done this a little bit better or that a little bit better and have regrets about it. Bashy’s single, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is out now. His album, Catch Me If You Can, is available from The video for the underground release of Ransom (part 1 June. See him in Bristol with Africa Express on 5 one) is pretty gritty, how did the concept for the music June, Chesham, Bucks on 17 July, and at Glastonbury video come about and what’s going to happen in part two? with Africa Express on 27 June. The video is influenced by the song, the video was a group bashy.com // myspace.com/bashystar effort between myself and my management team, the video

DEMOS

Psycho Baby Bristol’s Psycho Baby are so painfully stereotypical that it would probably be better to see them as a parody and take it from there. The Psycho Baby in question is Sally-Anne Beighton: a woman with a great voice, granted, but that whole cock-thirsty, I-rock-I-do, manpossessive persona wears a bit thin after five songs with titles like ‘Woman Get Ya Hands Off’, ‘I Want Action’ and ‘Born To Be Bad’. Meanwhile the boys in the band supply the gonad power and amusing gang vocals but ditch originality in favour of familiarity; which probably works very well in real ale pubs and local charity rockfests. psychobabyrocks.com Backbone

Rock In Your Pocket She used to be in scuzz-rock also-rans, Rub Ultra, did Charlie Beddoes. Now she’s fronting the Bristol-based Rock In Your Pocket and, on their ‘Feel The Pulse’ EP, delving into a post-industrial scrap-yard of greasy distortion and moody, girlish whimpering that wants to unnerve you like Nine Inch Nails do but can’t quite work up the necessary psychosis. ‘Stupid O’Clock’ sounds like Transvision Vamp’s naughtier sister, but the new wave chug of the title track sounds more authentic, as if it was recorded at the tail end of 1979 when punk was morphing into the new orthodoxy. myspace.com/ rockinyourpocket

Slow Motion

Chilled beats, synthetic drum fonts and a dose London based steppers Left Step Band hit of dub is the medicine of Slow Motion (or hard with the track Rebels Of The Frontline. Peter Mocsonoky to his mum). Hailing from It’s political, swampy, spooky and anthemic in Hungary, Peter manages to string some tunes a hip hop fashion with a slice of dub/reggae. together that only just pass as finished to my It’s fat in production and holds well for an ear. It’s harmless gear but sounds very much MP3 burn to CD. They seem to be doing like a DEMO, which I suppose is the whole freakin’ point of this pretty well too… In fact too well to be featured here actually…so section… good lad, must try harder! that’s enough on them. DJ Omas Top rocking tunes here from Manchester based DJ Omas. Perfect on the breaks and tight on production this gear is better than a lot of stuff I’ve heard coming from the Fat City Bootleg 7” release listings… This needs to be on vinyl to be fully appreciated in my sets. Think Pete Rock (hip hop), Gwen McRae (soul) and the better side of J Live (back-pack hip hop)… This gear is solid as a rock and I’d stick this straight in my record bag if it were pressed to wax… DOPE! myspace.com/djomas Jon Kennedy

Andrew Lips A welcome change to the usual serious gear I get pushed through my letterbox. Andrew Lips is well funny. His drawings, lyrics and attitude are ACE! He wants a bad review according to his letter but he can fu*k off because this music is great. It’s the kind of stuff I could tolerate over a good bumming. Andrew creates jaunty speed folk music with properly funny lyrics. You just have to go check him out. I think it’d be genius to see live! *doffs cap* myspace.com/andrewlips

Manzur Being trapped on the Channel Isles would drive me insane or drive me to the studio. Manzur is a DJ/producer hailing from said islands and comes strong with a 31 track CD of loops and ideas to shake any discerning dancefloor gently. We have some nicked loops with his beats and some nicked beats with chopped loops. If it were to have a proper release he’d better grab his ankles and be ready for a jolly good ‘copyright’ rogering… PIP PIP! myspace.com/itsthegetdown Jon Kennedy

Dirk Landish Local folk, pop, performer Dirk Landish has a crazy style. It captures your attention in an odd fashion. I think the vocals and lyrical content are the main focus on Does IT Buzz, Yes It Does. It’s slightly out of tune and slightly weird. Think Captain Beefheart meets Cockney Rebel but from the West Country. It’s interesting gear and sounds very live which I’m sure is where they are most at home, no doubt with large beards wearing purple wigs and pushing pianos into the sea. myspace.com/dirklandish Jon Kennedy

A Fine Day For Sailing Coming from the venerable Pop Noise mini-stable, Exeter’s A Fine Day For Sailing – ostensibly, Matthew Stead and friends – are so endearingly lo-fi that you quietly ignore the ridiculously loose musicianship on their double A-side single ‘Me And The Girl’ / ‘Village Idiot’ and concentrate instead on the Sarah Recordsmeets-Magnetic Fields indie wobble that they benignly craft. Third song, ‘Is He The One That You Want’ lovingly recreates Biff Bang Pow’s psyche-pop harmonica’n’harmonies with a tear in its eye and a sense of nostalgia that’s hard to resist. myspace.com/afinedayforsailing

Think the Tom Hank’s hit Big, but in reverse. This comedy is touched by a witty script and the presence of teen heart-throb Zac Efron, who captured hearts in High School Musical, and should capture more in this feel-good hit. Angels & Demons (TBC)

14 – 18 Jun: Curzon

Community Cinema, Clevedon, 01275 871 000, curzon.org.uk Dir: Ron Howard Starring: Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgård 2009/US/140 mins The team behind the global phenomenon The Da Vinci Code returns for this highly anticipated follow up. When Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon (Hanks) discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organisation’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. With beautiful Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra in tow we are taken on an actionpacked hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and eventually the most secretive vault on earth. One to watch. Coraline (PG)

5 – 11Jun: Chapter Arts

Centre, Cardiff, 029 2031 1050, chapter.org. Dir: Henry Selick. tarring Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, and Jennifer Saunders 2009/USA/100mins Coraline Jones is not a nice little girl. Bored and ignored by her preoccupied parents, she dreams of escaping her dreary and rain-sodden home. Coraline finds a secret tunnel to a parallel world where parents are always fun, talking cats are your pal and your neighbour is a flamboyant vaudevillian performer with a troupe of trained mice. However, life is not quite as perfect as it seems and Coraline must act to save all that she holds dear. This is a magical film that will bowl both adults and kids away and if you can see it in glorious 3D for some eye-popping thrills. The End Of The Line (TBC)

8 Jun: The Riverfront, Newport, 01633 656 757,

Words: John Barker

newport.gov.uk. Dir: Rupert Murray Starring: Charles Clover, Roberto Mielgo. 2009/UK/102 mins Based on journalist Charles Clover’s book, this is the devastating story of the declining state of the world’s oceans. The statistics are horrendous, the underwater photography stunningly beautiful, the conclusion inescapable. The message is it’s time to control the fishing fleets of the world before there are no more fish left. There’s still time, and its relatively easy to do. If the politicians set fishing quotas according to the scientists advice (as they do in Alaska), set up marine conservation areas, and we all ate fish only from sustainable sources, the problem could be solved in a generation. A hopeful message from a deeply troubling film. Is There Anybody (12A) 8 – 11 June: Curzon Community Cinema, Clevedon, 01275 871 000, curzon.org.uk Dir. John Crowley, starring Michael Caine, Bill Milner, AnneMarie Duff, Thelma Barlow UK/2008/94 mins Sir Michael Caine gives one of the finest performances of his career as a retired magician who reluctantly enters a family-run old age home. Set in a seaside English town circa 1987, the film charts the unlikely frtendship that develops between Caine’s proud, bitter old performer and the death-obsessed young son (played by Son of Rambow’s Bill Milner) of the home’s overwhelmed owners. Is Anybody There? tells a charming story about

growing up and growing old, and the unpredictable adventures that happen along the way. Little Ashes (15) 3 Jun: The Cube Microplex, Bristol, Bristol, 0117 907 4190, microplex.cubecinema.com Dir: Paul Morrison, starring Matthew McNulty, Robert Pattinson and Javier Beltrán UK/2008/112 mins This is the extraordinary story of the relationship between of three of the leading artists of their time; Salvador Dali, Luis Bunuel and Garcia Lorca. Little Ashes follows a young Salvador Dali from his beginnings living in the Residencia de Estudiantes, leading to his dynamic relationship with poet Federico Lorca. It is a moving story of extraordinary talent and a friendship that would define his art and those around him.

LIVE 16 – 18 Jun: Chapter

Arts Centre, Cardiff, 029 2031 1050, chapter.org. Dir: Jamie Jay Johnson, starring Marina Baltadzi, Yiorgos Ioannides and Mariam Romelashvili. UK/2009/93mins This delightful popumentary bounces you through the struggles and triumphs of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with just the right mix of affection and amusement. We follow the fortunes of hopeful contestants from across the continent and come to understand their motivations for wanting to take part. The participation of Mariam Romelashvili from Georgia is a matter of real national pride for her embattled country, while Cyprian Yiorgos Ioannides, a pint-sized Tom Jones-style belter, endures teasing at school for his showbiz aspirations. It’s hard not to find yourself rooting for these often naïve, but highly creative young people.

Cardiff, 029 2031 1050, chapter. org. Dir: Philip Stolzl starring Benno Fuermann, Florian Lukas and Johanna Wokalek 2008/Germany/121 mins It’s the best mountaineering film since Touching The Void and is also based on a real story. Toni and Andi are favourites in the race to be the first to climb the deadly North Face of the Eiger and so become national heroes in time for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. But things soon start to go wrong for the ill equipped mountaineers, who are determined to the point of madness to scale the most

Star Trek (12a)

1 – 4 Jun: Curzon Community

Cinema, Clevedon, 01275 871 000, curzon.org.uk Dir: J.J Abrams starring Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto. 2009/US/126 mins Star Trek fans rejoice as the man behind Lost and Cloverfield takes on science fiction’s most precious commodity. This is a chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members during their time at Starfleet Academy. The cast features hot Brit-talent Simon Pegg as Scotty and fresh from his turn as Sylar in Heroes, plays Spock. The effects are out of this world, and this reinvention of the Star Trek franchise boldly goes where no man or Trekker has gone before

LIVE CLU CLUB

Dir: McG, starring Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Linda Hamilton. 2008/US/TBC Not content with reinventing the Batman franchise, Christian Bale takes on the Terminator mantle in this sequel. The film is set in the future where mankind is at war with a race of cybernetic killer machines and John Connor is leading the human resistance. Despite some much documented troubles on set the end product looks befitting of director James Cameron’s early efforts. Box office records could be terminated.

Viva!: Flores De Luna (15)

2 – 7 Jun: The Watershed,

Released: 26 June

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN (TBC)

Dir: Michael Bay, starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and John Turturro As if the return of those metallic killers in Terminator Salvation wasn’t enough to contend with, the human race has also got robots in disguise to fight off in this sequel to the box office smash. After returning to their home planet, the defeated robot Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons (bad guys), and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots (that’s the good guys) then find out that Megatron’s (the ultimate bad guy) dead body has been stolen from the US Military by the Decepticons and is brought back to life. Then the fun really begins, should be as spectacular as the original and then some.

Bristol, 0117 927 5100, watershed.co.uk Dir: Juan Vincente Córdoba 2008/Spain/120 mins On the outskirts of Madrid in the 1950s, illegal family homes were built through the night, standing proudly erect by morning. They housed economic and social migrants who soon developed a unique identity, and out of these humble beginnings of mud and tin shacks grew the El Pozo del Tio Raímundo suburb. This moving documentary presents the development of this multicultural Mecca as a reflection of Spanish society, class war and solidarity.
