Over 100,000 see Banksy show so far The biggest ever Banksy show featuring over 100 of his works at the Bristol City Museum is still drawing in huge numbers on a daily basis. The museum confirmed that over 100,000 people have visited the exhibition so far - making it the most popular show in the museums history. They have now revised their estimates and expect over 350,000 to see the show by the time it closes at the end of August. The director of the museum, Kate Brindley, said, “They’re increasing every day so we’re having queues all the way past the university building. We’re having 5,500 per day - I’m sure it’ll go up. We’re thinking about doing some late nights as well to help get enough people through.” Ms Brindley added the museum was having to limit the numbers of people allowed in at once. “There’s no sign that the interest is waning - it’s growing - so we’ve got to ask for people’s patience because the building can take only so many. We’re having to be a bit careful about crowds. We’re getting people through as fast as possible.” Banksy is now to donate one of the works to the museum when the exhibition closes at the end of August. The show runs until Mon 31 Aug and is open daily between 10am-5pm (last entry 4pm).

Glasvegas have added to the list of the many exceptional bands from Glasgow. Their sound is powerful with moving songs that ooze with rock and roll attitude, and they’ve also come a long way in the last year. From self-released singles to a record deal with Columbia, a Mercury nomination and being called ‘the best band in the world’ by Alan McGee (formerly the boss of Creation Records), the band have stamped their unique trademark on the musical map, globally. Glasvegas is James Allan on vocals and guitar, Rab Allan on guitar, Paul Donoghue on bass and Caroline McKay on drums. Rab talks to 247 about his band’s rise in popularity, his cousin and band vocalist James and being mates with Oasis. Did you and James listen to a lot of the same records when you were growing up? Yeah, and I think because James is the older cousin, a lot of the things he got into, I’d listen to as well. And I guess as I developed my own taste, I’d recommend things to him. As a band we all have an influence on each other. We’ve been playing together for about four years, but we were all friends for years before that. Are you Velvet Underground fans? I’m thinking female drummer playing stand-up drums…? Yeah, James is a fan and I think Caroline is too. At first, Caroline couldn’t play the drums, so when we played live she would just play one drum and we used a drum machine. Then she moved to two drums, and that became the sound of the band. To be honest, I think if we had a full drum kit, it wouldn’t work. Did you expect to get this kind of recognition when you started out? I always knew the songs were good enough, but a lot of what can happen is down to luck and timing. I thought we’d be successful, but not to this level, to be quite honest. It’s already exceeded all of our expectations, and the album’s not even been out for a year yet. Does this put you under pressure to come up with a follow up? Not really, but I can see why people might think that. James has written half of the next album already, and it’s phenomenal. It’s quite a change from the first one. In terms of the sound or the songs? The songs are equally as good if not better, and there’s gonna be some changes to the sound of the band: just trying to progress and become better. When we recorded the Christmas EP, there was no pressure there: we just went and did it. Tell us about the (highly collectable) records you released before getting signed to Columbia. We put out three or four limited edition singles, which we rerecorded later for the album. They were recorded in a little studio in Glasgow, in one day, just because we didn’t have any money. The guy who does our sound at the live shows engineered them.

With the music industry the way it is these days, is it harder for bands to start out? I’d say yeah, it’s a lot more difficult. The record companies are probably getting scared right now, in terms of money. That means that they take less chances with bands. A few years ago they’d let bands develop, but nowadays, if you don’t do it with your first album, you’re out. We’ve been the lucky ones – there’s a few bands each year that will have an album that’s pretty strong. But it’s a shame for the other bands. One of your biggest fans is Alan McGee, who previously signed Primal Scream and Oasis. Did he help you out when you were starting out? Alan gave us a lot of support and encouragement; when people were saying that we were terrible, he was saying that we were the best band in the world. That meant a lot, especially to James because he writes the songs. It was a confidence builder. But we’ve never really been involved with Alan business-wise.

“At first, Caroline couldn’t play the drums, so when we played live she would just play one drum and we used a drum machine.” You’ve cited Creation Records as an influence. Well, Oasis were the reason we started the band, and now we’re friends with them. We’ve toured and played festivals with them. We were with them a couple of days ago, watching them play from the stage. It was absolutely incredible. How does it feel to have come this far, doing gigs with Oasis and U2? It’s really bizarre because these were the bands we were listening to, who were exciting us about music. Now they’re telling us we excite them! Although it feels good, the level of craziness probably won’t sink in for a while yet. It’s very flattering and they’re all lovely guys. You’ve been touring extensively. Tell us about any standout shows. Probably Barrowlands in Glasgow. We did a gig in Rome, which blew me away. It was probably as good as a crowd in Glasgow and I really didn’t expect that. And also the London gig of the NME Awards Tour. Is any new material likely to surface soon? James is actually recording some demos just now, but I don’t think we’ll be playing any of it live yet. We’ll start recording the next album towards the end of this year, and it should be out before the festivals next year. That’s the plan, but obviously things can change. We’ll be recording it in Los Angeles – James is buying a house there, so we’ll set up shop there and build a studio. Rich Costey, who co-produced the first album with James, wants to do it again.

Glasvegas are supporting U2 at Cardiff Millennium Stadium on 22 August. Find out more about the band at glasvegas.net magazine | 13

The Wombats bounded gleefully onto the music scene three years ago, with their bouncy, joy filled tunes of nightclub shenanigans and girl troubles. The three-strong band hails from Liverpool and comprises native Liverpudlians Matt “Murph” Murphy on guitar, vocals and songwriting duties, multi talented drummer/singer Dan Haggis and Norwegian Tord Øverland-Knudsen on bass and vocals. The trio met whilst studying at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) in 2003, and have gone from touring around courting the attention of A&R men to playing festivals and gigs all over the world (and they’ve even appeared on Neighbours). Their debut album, ‘A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation’, reached number 11 in the UK album chart when it was released back in October 2007, and spawned radio friendly dancefloor fillers like ‘Lets Dance To Joy Division’ and ‘Backfire At The Disco’. They’re currently working on their second album, and putting a lot of effort into not growing up. We chatted to a slightly hungover Murph, at home in London, ahead of their headline slot at the very first Falmouth Sound event, due to take place in Falmouth at the end of this month.

leave all that stuff behind…” He adds, “I don’t want to do a grown up second album – even though the lyrics are slightly darker it’s not going to sound overly grown up when we all start screaming and shouting down the microphone. I don’t like it when bands bring out a second album and they’re all serious. I’ve already got an idea for one of the songs that I want to do, with us all being horrendous vampires with blood dripping down our necks…”

“Studying at LIPA was a bit like being in Fame,” drawls Murph, in his soft Liverpudlian accent. “It was a weird place. I literally saw people doing cartwheels down the corridors.” He pauses for a moment. “I never really settled in. I went there because it had a cool reputation, and I could spend my time being creative. I didn’t make many friends, apart from Dan and Tord.” He goes on to explain, “You feel wrapped up when you’re [studying] there. There’s quite a lot of pretense and a lot of students feel like they’ve made it already. And when they leave, and the job in Burger King arises, that can be a pretty dark moment.”

It’s times like these, after the initial hype has died down and before that difficult second album is released, that test a band’s capability to come up with the goods. “We’re halfway through writing the second album, and for the first few songs, I was like, oh God…” admits Murph. “You feel the pressure because of how well the first album did and the success we had. But now that I’m halfway through writing it, the pressure has kind of disappeared and I’m all excited again. So at the moment, we’ve just got to concentrate on making a better album than our first one. And we’ll give it a damn good effort. At the moment, I’m not really thinking about anything else.”

Since releasing their first record in 2006, the band have seen a good deal of success and have travelled the world – have they lived the rock and roll dream, we ask? “Touring can be tough,” says Murph. “You get a bit low, and you get cabin fever… We love the job but it actually can be quite a dull lifestyle, apart from the real highlights like being on stage, or going to awards… The rest of it is just not rock and roll at all.” So does the pressure of being in the music industry ever get too much? “Occasionally, yeah,” he says. “We played on stage at the MTV Europe Awards, and the amount of people and all the TV cameras being shoved in your face was a bit much… I was exceptionally nervous before we went on, and I’m never really nervous. You can kind of feel the pressure mounting,” he explains, “but if you ignore it, it just kind of goes away. We don’t usually worry about getting it right on stage,” he laughs. “Our performances are always different.”

“there are only so many songs you can sing about being slapped in a disco, so we had to kind of leave all that stuff behind...” Luckily, there don’t seem to be any of those moments on the horizon for The Wombats. When they started out, they were happy go lucky, maybe even a bit silly. It worked like a charm and dancefloors went crazy for their indie pop madness. Murph tells us, “I think that stage of the band died a death pretty early, but we still maintain that same attitude. We’re really passionate about the music, but we’re carefree…” With their new album in the process of being written, it’s only natural that fans and the music press will be waiting to see just how (and indeed, if) The Wombats have matured. When asked what their new material is like, Murph explains, “Everything sounds a bit heavier, and more synthy. It’s still got elements of joy that the first record had. I guess the lyrics are a bit darker – I had to really think about what I wanted to write about, because there are only so many songs you can sing about being slapped in a disco, so we had to kind of Words: Lauren Tavetrner Brown

But what’s in store for the future? Rumours that Murph and Tord will be touring with Panic At The Disco this summer are completely untrue, he exclaims; “That’s on our Wikipedia page but it’s not true. Imagine if we did do that! I don’t think that would be very good for our career. But then again Wikipedia said that Tord was going out with Michelle McManus. It’s not always a reliable source of information...” The Wombats headline Falmouth Sound on 29 August at Events Square, Discovery Quay, Falmouth. They’re joined by The Boxer Rebellion, Fink, Foy Vance and Melo Park. On 30 August there will be performances from The Wailers, The Neville Staple Band, Gabbidon and Pete King. Mixing the sunny flavours of Martinique, Zambia and the Canary Islands with the exciting creativity and diversity of Bristol, Mankala create a “high energy Afro-Caribbean fusion groove” that gets even the most dreary English introverts busting out their moves. Infectiously happy and unavoidably uplifting, Mankala play gigs up and down the country, injecting a bit of sun into the otherwise grumpy weather. Ahead of their busy summer schedule of festivals and gigs, I chatted to Mankala about their ‘action through music’. You are based in Bristol but the band is very multicultural; was this a conscious decision to promote diversity? We have members from Zambia, Martinique, Canary Islands and of course England – Bristol, Cornwall and Bath to be more precise! Promoting diversity wasn’t our aim, there was no conscious decision in that sense. It was all about creating music and being part of a band. That’s what brought us together. Bristol is a great multicultural city and diversity is part of everyday life so it’s the right kind of place for musicians of different backgrounds and nationalities to come together with one common goal. Back in 2002 Christian de Juan (Tenerife/Bristol) met Omer Makessa (originally from Martinique) through friend/musician Alphonse Daudet (from Cameroon) and from there Mankala was born. The first year of Mankala saw many changes in the line-up, then came Simwinji Zeko (from Zambia), Sol Ahmed (from Bristol), Jason Newman (from Cornwall/ Bristol) and more recently Ben Plocki (from London/Bath), Dale Hambridge (from Bath)... and it’s still evolving! Right now we’ve just about settled as an eight piece band, which is the line up we need to reproduce our full sound.

You are working with Bristolian producers and DJs to create a ‘Mankala Remixes’ album. How did this come about? Our bass player Sol Ahmed first mentioned the word “remix” about two years ago and then through our drummer Jason Newman we got in touch with Bristol based musician/ producer Jonni Kent - musically known as Krantz. Krantz was the first producer to remix some of our tracks and it was such a great feeling to listen to somebody else’s creative take on our music. We’re currently working with various other local producers and the aim is to release “The Mankala Remixes Album” sometime in the near future. But we have to take one thing at a time: first the second album, then the remix album! The words ‘action through music’ appear on your website – can you explain what action it is that you support? “Action through music” has a very personal meaning to all of us in Mankala who are trying to take action in our own lives by following our dreams and doing what we love most, despite the sacrifices that have to be made. Of course, the line “action through music” also has a more practical meaning, which is that through our music we can take positive actions like helping to raise funds for noble causes. A good example of this is the Blazaza Farm Festival which will take place on 5 Sept at The Farm in St Werburghs in Bristol. The event will run for two days and will raise money for the victims and survivors of the ongoing atrocities being carried out in Gaza.

Bristol is a great multicultural city and diversity is part of everyday life.”

You are playing Bloom festival in August; how do you think that will compare to playing the Jazz World Stage at Glastonbury in 2008? The Jazz World gig at Glastonbury 2008 was definitively one of our most important gigs so far, together with the main stage at the River Festival 2007 in Bordeaux, France, but we don’t like to make comparisons. Every gig is a special occasion where we go out there and hopefully make people happy and make people dance. In that sense there won’t be much difference between that Jazz World Stage at Glastonbury and the Bloom festival.

Have you done any gigs in Africa or the Caribbean? Would you like to? No we haven’t – that would be like a dream come true! We did talk about trying to get a gig at the desert festival in Mali, but haven’t yet taken the actions to make this idea a reality. Maybe this should be our next action through music!

PROFILE:JODY Bristol native Jody began painting at the now infamous Barton Hill Youth Club under the wing of the legendary John Nation in the late 1980’s. After a long break from the graffiti scene he has resurfaced following the success of Felix Braun’s Children of the Can book launched last year. Returning to the Bristol scene refreshed and reinvented, Jody’s first solo show draws inspiration from the barrage of slick and cynical imagery portrayed through fashion and advertising. No picture can be truly trusted - we are subjected daily to hyper retouched, overly sexualised and false imagery, making us feel aspirational, but at the same time, insecure about own selves. Jody digs just below the polished surface of magazine spreads, movie posters and advertising to uncover a sinister world of false idols and hopes. Blank and hollow eyes stare back where once perfectly made up faces once did – imagery that was meant to be flawless is subverted, changing the intended meaning into something darker, disturbing and more powerful. The show opens at the Weapon of Choice Gallery, St Michaels Hill, Bristol on the 14 August and runs until 13 Sept 2009. Preview show Fri 14 Aug 6-10PM. Free entry. Drinks provided

La Coka Nostra

A Brand You Can Trust (Uncle Howie Records)

A rap group comprised of Ill Bill, Slaine, Everlast, Danny Boy and DJ Lethal, which to me sounds like House Of Pain 2, and whilst my initial impression was “it’s all 1992 again,” this album sounds fresh and current. With guests like Snoop Dogg and B Real from Cypress Hill, and production by the ever on-point Alchemist, this is an essential purchase for anyone that likes their hip hop dark, head nodding and non jiggy. Aldo Vanucci

Various Artists Tru Thoughts Covers (Unfold)

This is a collection of cover versions from the last ten years of Tru Thoughts releases and is a funky, soul filled jam from some of the best artists around. Highlights include Alice Russell and Nostalgia 77’s searing version of White Stripe’s Seven Nation Army, TM Juke and the Jack Baker Trio’s cover of Fedde Le Grand’s Put Your Hands Up For Detroit, and Jumbonic’s interpretation of The Stroke’s classic Last Nite. And did we mention that Plymouth’s 14th Best DJ Aldo Vanucci makes an appearance, with fellow Plymouthian songstress Amie J on the vocals of The Kooks Naïve? Fabulous. LTB

Dialog>

Run Silent Run Deep (Lo-Tek)

This is a move away from Dialog>’s Plump DJs-favoured deep house debut album, ‘Music For Imaginary Movies’. Spacey, ambient and cinematic capture the general vibe here. The title track creates a similar mood to FSOL’s ambient classic, ‘Papua New Guinea’. But a lot of different musical influences are weaved together on this album, and he doesn’t just stick to one tempo. Sometimes dark in places, but chilled all the way. Arash Torabi

Rob Sparx Trooper

(Z Audio) Former D&B producer (with releases on Grid, Zombie & Up Yours), Rob Sparx has more recently been dropping dubstep. Forget his bass banger, ‘Sludge’ (Audio Phreaks) – ‘Trooper’ has a more textured, dubbed-out and laid back approach. ‘Messiah Dub’ comes with melodica and reggae vocals, and there’s more dub with ‘The Prayer Re-Dub’. Sparx shows that he’s not afraid to experiment, giving ‘Trooper’ an

album feel. Highlight: ‘The Stroller’, which cuts jungle snares with a smooth reggae vocal sample. Job’s a good’un. Arash Torabi

Cornershop

Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast (Ample Play)

Like Morrissey, Cornershop’s Tjinder often comes up with great lyrics and song titles. Album opener ‘Who Fingered Rock & Roll’ is one example. He isn’t always quite so adventurous with his vocal melodies though, but the songs on the album still stand out, thanks to great arrangements and creative production methods. I’m a sucker for the sitar, and you can’t argue with a shit-hot rhythm section. Highlight: the psychedelic-come-Bollywood funk-out of ‘Free Love’. A welcome return. Arash Torabi

Florence And The Machine Lungs (Island)

Everyone’s heard of her but no-one’s listening, right? Well pin ‘em back, indie cynic, ‘Lungs’ is an, at times, masterful collage of timeless pomp-pop, with echoes of Kate Bush and Enya. Unfortunately, it’s tempered by a tendency to overdo things, Winehouse style, in the misguided belief that normal people live out their excesses, vicariously, through other people’s songs. No matter, because like all self-absorbed popstarlets, she’ll take it all in her lofty stride. Backbone

Lovvers

OCD Go Go Go Girls (Wichita) If you thought that Nottingham’s Lovvers might crawl out of the none-more lo-fi dustbin for their debut album proper, you’re sadly mistaken. ‘OCD…’ picks up where mini-album, ‘Think’, left off: scraping riffs off the bottom of their shitty hi-top trainers and turning them into songs that make first-wave US punks like The Voidoids and The Germs sound like Yes. And if the unholy strata of distortion don’t get you, the effortlessly cool new wave tuneage will. Backbone

2 kick-ass vinyl EPs from the ever-eclectic London dubstep label, Studio Rockers, with releases now into double figures. Cotti & 2Nice come through with a nice reggae rumbler, featuring two mixes of the title track, and the more electronic ‘Lost & Found’ on the flip. Hackman deliver a couple of meaty Mariachi El Bronx double-time tracks on the A side, the second of which, ‘Illusionz’ uses an inventive piano High Contrast Confidential line with a garage bass that throbs over a (Wichita) busy snare pattern. ‘Nocturne’ on the other side keeps the bass steady and wobbly over Don’t laugh. Thankfully (Decon) the band’s complete command of Mariachi mannerisms, as heard on the likes of Fish Outta Water marks the long awaited ‘Quinceniera’, shines through. Chali 2na has evolved into an artist with depth, and this album shows it, The Cave Singers where in the Jurassic 5 albums we never Welcome Joy got hear his life stories in so much detail. Other stand out tracks are Midlake has thrust Pete Quirk and co into When Will I See You Again featuring Elzhi a celebratory coterie that cherry picks from from Slum Village, also uplifting vibes from the folk-rock mid-‘60s to the mid-‘70s in Don’t Stop featuring Anthony Hamilton, a haze of Led Zep prairie jams and hippy and Keep Goin featuring Choklate. On this album there is enough to keep the die hard ethics. Nothing wrong with that as long as the results are as resplendent and Jurassic 5 fans happy and enough to gain suggestive as ‘Summer Light’ and ‘Shrine’. the attention of new audiences for Chali. DEMOS

Midlands’ DARK SPARKS return with two songs that serve as an instructional tool to other budding, independent bands on how to endear yourselves to reviewers without appearing desperate or smug. Eschewing the need for label assistance, the band instead focus all their energies on trying to write songs that will resonate far beyond the inevitable influences that attach themselves to new musicians. They succeed. With bells on. ‘We Are Just Flies’ and ‘Crying In The Spotlight’ are both exemplary slices of dramatic indie-rock that any of their contemporaries – The Editors, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers – would be proud to put their names to. High praise? Deservedly so. ilovedarksparks.com Backbone

Bolton based pop, electronic, acoustic folk gear here from DENISE MORGAN. She has some great vocal talent and pretty solid song writing ability. It’s a bit Lily Allen and a bit Tenacious D on the acoustic side. I think this would sit nicely at an open mic night and if a prize be at stake she may indeed take it... Production is tight and the range of songs is ample for a demo sampler. Can’t fault this gear for what it is, solid!! myspace.com/denisemorgan Jon Kennedy

Portsmouth’s THE DAWN CHORUS are one of that rare breed of bands with a songwriter much like, say, Cursive, who understands the inherent beauty of words when they’re written in the right order. The melancholy-soaked folk-pop on debut album ‘The Big Adventure’ (released through Jelly Maid Recs) is the stuff of roots legend: the opening salvo of the title track (Parts 1 and 2) honouring the tradition of songs that paint lucid pictures designed to pull at your heart-strings without resorting to sentimentalism. When Kyle Euans sings “As I kick these boot heels I can finally fly / Over valleys and hills where my dear mother died” or when the gorgeous Arcade Fire-esque outtro to ‘I Can Be Anything’ drops, it’s hard to hold back the tears. Majestic. thedawnchorus.com Backbone

TIN DOGS have a full length LP demo to showcase their talents, entitled Bible John. Vocally inspired by Sid Vicious in my opinion. Musically punk rock with tight power riffs and tough, tough drums. I fucking love this gear and want to check them live to appreciate just how heavy their riffs are on a large system! Local to Bristol, you can catch this lot rocking pretty regularly around town! myspace.com/tindogs Jon Kennedy

Some honest ramblings from Adam Parsons aka CAPTAIN ACCIDENT here. The demo, named Another Catastrophe Courtesy Of… makes me think he’s got things on his mind, a guitar, a bit of reggae in him and a super hero cape! I’m getting a taste of early Police and that annoying, huge-headed twit that every wannabe surfer was listening to last year, what’s his name… John Jackson,

Jack Johnson… whatever. Anyway Cpt Accident is not quite as annoying as him and creates good, acoustic, reggae gear. myspace.com/captainaccident Jon Kennedy

Bristol solo singer/songwriter, OXYGEN THIEF, clearly mourns the day that Reuben split up, to the point where he attempts to recreate the band via one acoustic guitar and the layering of frenetic vocals. To be fair, it’s not bad but the likes of ‘Camera Shy’ are a difficult listen, ravaged with atonal chords and shoe-horned rock dynamics to the point where you wish he would just recruit a drummer and bassist and be done with it. Things make more sense when he works within acoustic limits and introduces some digi-percussive elements (‘Ours’) to create something, at once, more rounded and listenable. Nine songs in, though, and it becomes something of an endurance test. oxygenthiefmusic.com Backbone

Vocally this stuff sounds very forced. CHINA WHITE’s lead rapper/whisperer/seducer Liam Croker just sounds wrong to me. On Kitchen Sessions, the music is mediocre with wet drums, wet orchestral hits and a bassline that does no wig-flapping for me. There’s just nothing here to get your teeth into. I mean, it’s harmless and very, very clean. I can imagine this being big in Greece at some restaurant/beach bar or similar. myspace.com/chinawhitemusic Jon Kennedy Having supported bands such as Twisted Sister, Saxon and UFO, it’s fair to say that the BRABAZON boys rock almighty in the live arena where a CD demo can never show the true potential! As for musical content, as you can imagine it’s rock music but not as heavy as I’d have liked after reading all their own hype. It’s actually pretty wet but I fear the demo production has done their gear NO justice at all. It sounds like the drums are being played through a keyboard with no punch in the snares or booom in the kick. The Vocals are completely thin and wimpy. Whoever engineered this needs to stay away from HEAVY METAL music! myspace.com/brabazon05 Jon Kennedy

Plymouth indie-rockers, THE QUANTIZE, are another bunch to add to the list of city musicians whom you sense will go onto greater things, within or without the band. Encouragingly, on their two Myspace songs, vocalist, Matt Olver, understands the concept of working within your limits, proffering a fragile yet weighty croon. Equally, the band don’t try hard to be something they’re not, keeping things solid and believable. Good work. myspace.com/thequantize Backbone

After the loss of their child, a grieving couple retreat to their cabin ‘Eden’ in the woods hoping to overcome their loss and repair their broken hearts and marriage. However, when Dafoe’s character, as a relentless and overbearing talk therapist, suggests that she should relinquish her medication and have the courage to stay in the situation that frightens her, he seriously underestimates the power of their absolute and all encompassing grief. Go and see it and make up your own mind. Frozen River (TBC)

For Lila, a Mohawk single mother, this abandoned car is her opportunity to make the money she needs to get her young son back from her mother-in-law who has “stolen” him. Thrown together by circumstance, the two women make hazardous car trips across the ice of a frozen river to smuggle Chinese and Pakistani immigrants across the border into the US. While this is the stuff of action thrillers, first-time writer/director Hunt’s naturalistic style keeps it grounded in the struggle for economic survival and has received critical acclaim in festivals around the world.

Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince (12a) 21 – 27 Aug: The Welfare, Swansea, 01639 843163, thewelfare.co.uk. Dir: David Yates, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Gambon and Jim Broadbent. 2008/US/153mins Harry begins his sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. However when he finds a mysterious book marked as the property of the Half-Blood Prince, he begins to unearth dark secrets about Lord Voldemort’s shadowy past, that would be best left undiscovered. The incredible actionpacked climax is sure to leave the audience stunned and, inevitably, prove that you shouldn’t trust everybody who you think is good and also prove that not everyone can manage to survive.

In The Loop (15)

Words: John Barker

2 – 6 Aug: The Cube Microplex,

Bristol, 0117 907 4190, microplex. cubecinema.com. Dir. Armando Iannucci, starring Peter Capaldi, James Gandolfini, and Tom Hollander . 2008/UK/105 mins The US President and UK Prime Minister suddenly fancy a war. But it’ll be quick this time. The US General Miller (Gandolfini) doesn’t think so and the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster (Hollander), agrees with him. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on television, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington DC. If Simon can get in with the right DC people, if his entourage of one (Chris Addison) can sleep with the right intern and if they can both stop the PM’s chief strategist Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) rigging the vote at the UN, they can halt the war. From Armando Iannucci, the comic-genius behind The Thick Of It comes this biting satire on British-US relations and the lunacy of war. Dark, very funny, and potty-mouthed – and directed at relentless pace. Monsters Vs Aliens (PG) 1 – 3 Aug: Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, 029 2031 1050, chapter.org. Dir: Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon, starring Seth Rogen and Reese Witherspoon. 2008/US/94 mins

films

When a meteorite from outer space hits a young California girl named Susan Murphy and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger, on a desperate order from The President, the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction! Great fun for all the kids.

Slaughterhouse–Five (15)

23 Aug: Arnolfini, Bristol, 0117

9172300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir. George Roy Hill, starring Michael Sacks, Billy Pilgrim, and Ron Leibman. 1972/US/104 mins The story of Slaughterhouse-Five is the story of a man who, emotionally scarred by his experience in WWII, believes that he has come unstuck in time. And perhaps he has, for Billy Pilgrim never knows where or when he will find himself next. Along the way, Billy survives the war (after being held prisoner in an old abandoned slaughterhouse converted to a POW camp by the Germans), finds a wife (Holly Near), and on his daughter’s wedding day, gets kidnapped by aliens. Billy becomes an exhibit in a zoo on the alien planet Tralfamador, where his captors provide him with a mate, who is a former adult movie star Montana Wildhack (Valerie Perrine). All in all, Billy floats acceptingly through his unpredictable existence as Kurt Vonnegut (author) and George Roy Hill (director) point out the absurdities of war and its effects on a human life.

Soul Power (12A)

14 – 16 Aug: Arnolfini, Bristol,

0117 9172300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir: Jeffrey Levy-Hinte Starring: Muhammed Ali, James Brown, and B.B. King. 2008/US/92 mins Muhammed Ali and George Foreman’s 1974 fight in Kinshasa, Zaire (aka the “Rumble in the Jungle”) is legendary, but no less momentous was the music festival which took place alongside it. A forceful and exuberant declaration of empowerment, Zaire ‘74 brought together some of the best African-American and native African soul musicians – James Brown, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, The Crusaders, Sister Sledge, and many others – for three days of electrifying and explosive performances. A reminder of an era & movement that shaped history and a celebration of the sheer power of music.

Hot New Releases:

Year One (12A)

14 – 20 Aug: The Welfare,

Swansea, 01639 843163, thewelfare.co.uk. Dir: Harold Ramis, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera. 2008/US/97 mins Black and Cera play Zed and Oh, an Old Testament hunter and gatherer respectively who are cast out of their tribe when Zed eats a forbidden fruit. It becomes something of an ancient road movie as they wander through biblical times, encountering Cain and Abel, Sodom and a host of warring tribes. Laugh out loud giggles are guaranteed.

LIVE Watchmen (18)

29 Aug: Arnolfini, Bristol,

Released: 4 Sept GAMER (TBC)

CLUB

Dir: Mark Neveldine/Brian Taylor, starring Gerard Butler, Milo Ventimiglia, John Leguizamo Gamer is set in the near-future in a world where mind-control technology has taken society by storm and a multiplayer on-line game called Slayers allows gamers to control human death row prisoners in mass-scale deathmatches. If an inmate lives through 30 matches then he wins his freedom. Prisoner Kable (Butler) is the online champ, having won 27 matches. He must fight to regain his identity and independence by launching an attack on the system that has imprisoned him.

Released: 21 August

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (TBC)

0117 9172300, arnolfini.org.uk Dir: Zach Snyder, starring Jackie Earle Haley and Patrick Wilson. 2008/US/163 mins Set in an alternate 1985, the film follows a group of former vigilantes as tensions heighten between the United States and the Soviet Union. The story is set in an alternate reality where superheroes exist, Richard Nixon is still president, Vietnam was won by the South, and tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are at an all-time high. The vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) is investigating the murder of a former superhero, the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and uncovers a plot to discredit and murder various heroes. Rorschach discovers a far wider-ranging conspiracy involving his colleagues’ past which could completely change the course of history. This is intelligent, adult, blockbuster cinema that should satisfy both fans of the graphic novel, and those who want to enjoy the pleasures of a good film.

Dir: Quentin Tarantino, starring: Brad Pitt, Paul Rust and Michael Fassbinder. 2009/US/TBC In 1940s Nazi-Occupied France, Lt. Aldo Raine (Pitt) and his Basterds, a squadron of ruthless Jewish soldiers, must help the Allies wipe out the German High Command at a film premiere. The cinema, however, is owned by a vengeful Jewish survivor with plans of her own. As this is Quentin Tarantino’s take on the war movie expect references to the Dirty Dozen and any number of obscure genre films in amongst the snappy dialogue, and ultra-violence. Should be gloriously entertaining.
