NEWS Pimp My Stand

247 Magazine is offering designers, illustrators, photographers (and anyone else who is feeling creative!) the chance to submit a design for our slick looking metal magazine distribution stands. These stands are used at the most popular distribution points for the magazine across the South West, and at the moment they’re looking rather naked so we are looking for fresh, cool designs to customize them. The best designs will be mounted on the sides of the stands. The 247 team will also aim to locate the stand in the winning designer’s home town or city where ever possible. Each design MUST feature the 247 logo (email us at 247@outofhand.co.uk with PIMP MY STAND in the subject line for a submission kit) – and it’s up to you how you get it in there. Your design must be 225mm wide x 937mm high, and as each stand has two sides, your design should take this into consideration. You can also submit as many designs as you like! Competition closes on 31 December.

THIS MONTH WE ARE... …excited. We’ve got that “lets-squeezeit-and-try-guessingwhat-it-is” feeling. That feeling that makes you think, “If no one is looking, is it ok to rip the paper, sneak a look inside, then sellotape it closed again?” Granted, this feeling is probably only going to last until we have to actually start Christmas shopping… then we will most likely be screamingoverspending-tinselstrangled-Rudolphnosed messes. In an effort to avoid the festive blues, we will just try to remember that this is a nice time of year to remind the ones you love just how much they mean to you. So, here it is. Merry Christmas! We love you all (you know who you are), we appreciate your continued support and we can’t wait to get stuck in to 2010 – we’ve got tons of great stuff in store, from our 10th Birthday party in April, to exciting new online developments… See you on the flip side!

Party Like its 2009...

If you’re looking for something exciting to do on NYE 09 in the South West, then obviously you’ll be reading our New Years Eve round up (see next page). But if you’re looking to go a bit further afield, then you can’t go far wrong with a trip to Motion Skate Park in Bristol. BUGGEDOut!, Arcadia and Bristolian promoters The Blast and Just Jack have organised a spectacular event across the skatepark, nightclub, night garden, a big top in the car park (and an entire disused warehouse next door). Arcadia’s critically acclaimed festival season has taken in Glade, Bestival, Electric Picnic and Glastonbury, and for NYE it will fill a warehouse with its retro-futuristic scrap-yard creations. Their futuristic creation – the love-child of a rocket jet and a DJ booth – the ‘Afterburner’ (which saw defining sets from Fatboy Slim at Glasto and Carl Cox at Bestival) will provide a soundtrack from the likes of rave legends Altern8. The extensive music line-up includes Simian Mobile Disco, Friendly Fires, Rusko, and Roni Size. Superpromoters BUGGEDOut! take over the venue’s skatepark, home to Channel 4’s Skins parties, while The Blast and Just Jack host the nightclub’s two rooms and the ‘Lost Disco’, a venue accessible only via a tunnel into the carpark. Party from 9pm - 5am, tickets are £25adv, see www.motionbristol.com for more. If you’re thinking of heading to London, then Ministry of Sound have an all star line up ready to rock the O2 Arena – Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Dave Spoon, Example, Justice and Plump DJs will all perform as part of nine hours of music, with spectacular visuals, pyrotechnic displays and an aerial walkway that will see artists and entertainers performing along an LED lit stage high above the 15000 strong crowd. For the midnight moment, a bespoke pyrotechnic display will be unveiled, programmed to Calvin Harris’s set. VIP tickets (£190 per person) give you fast track entry, access to a chill out area with full bar and toilet facilities, a glass of champers at midnight, and a goody bag filled with limited edition merchandise and a membership tag which will give you plus a friend free entry for life to MOS club in London. Standard tickets cost £50/£75 - see www.ministryofsound.com/NyeO2 for more.

DumbWise theatre company formed in 2006, when an ambitious bunch of students joined forces to realize their dreams of creating exciting contemporary theatre. Initially known as Electric Picnic (they had to change their name after a stern letter from the already established festival of the same name), they rebranded themselves as DumbWise and are successfully putting on innovative productions across the South West and beyond. The company all trained at the prestigious London based Rose Bruford and Goldsmiths institutions, but in choosing to be based in the Plymouth (where most of them grew up), they are committed to keeping the creative industry in the region bubbling hot, getting great reviews for their performances and putting on sell out shows. We chatted with them whilst they prepared to perform their Christmas smash hit, ‘Last Xmas’, for the second year running. DumbWise are John Ward and Jess Dalton-Leggett (directors), Ceri Payne (production manager and company secretary), Grace Loman (marketing manager) and Ben Martin (resident actor), all supported by a committed pool of artistic collaborators who work with them in London and Plymouth. What is the philosophy of DumbWise? Jess: The “collective” ethos is central to DumbWise’s philosophy. We try to produce theatre that we would want to see. Our writing aims to capture the light and the dark in every play – we’re all really into dark material but we’ve written two comedies this year which have been a real success. How is DumbWise different from other theatre companies? John: We write most of our plays collectively, with what we call an “ink-tank”, which is an original concept in the theatre world (it’s a lot more common in American television). Either an idea starts in the ink-tank and gets written and tested collectively, or one of our collaborators sends a first draft to us and we start producing it. This approach means we have a wide variety of work. If you come to watch a DumbWise show, you’re watching a crop of young professionals exercising their craft. We like to think we’re a stamp of quality in a predominantly am-dram local scene, showing the city work that would normally bypass the South West and get shown nationally. We always try to write about what we know, so the work lends itself naturally to a younger audience, say 16-30. Our plays are definitely contemporary in their language and attitude.

Where are you based? John: Our office is in Plymouth and we are proud to call the city our home. The Barbican Theatre has always supported us and they deserve a lot of credit for their commitment to new work. We have a solid base in London and have recently made some good contacts with theatres in Wales, so we’re starting to branch out. Tell us about your current production, ‘Last Xmas’… Jess: It’s about a guy called Paul who finds himself alone on Christmas day and consequentially gets so drunk he decides it’s a good idea to go out in search of an ex-girlfriend, whom he hasn’t heard from since the previous Christmas. His memories of their relationship are played out in home videos, which we’ve made in the style of Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’. Much of the comedy, and indeed pathos, comes from the fact that Paul won’t admit that he misses this girl, although his actions indicate otherwise. The story is scored live on stage by John and VJ Dan Pooley who mess with Paul’s mind with twisted covers of classic Christmas hits. ‘Last Xmas’ is our anti-pantomime; we’ve made a show that is more for friends than families. Tell us about the role that live music plays in DumbWise productions. John: Live music plays a big part in DumbWise’s theatrical style. Instead of putting musicians in an orchestra pit, we place them right in the heart of the action and use music to comment on the story. It opens loads of doors theatrically can give the vibe of a live gig. We have big ambitions to make a show next year which is influenced by – and in turn influences – a live set from a band. What is in store for the future of DumbWise? Jess: We’re previewing our new work in the city whilst touring and getting our current shows booked nationally – it’s a rolling system that companies need to get in the swing of. When opportunities come up, we’ll have the products ready to fit. Some of our new plays will go to the festivals whilst others will be touring the South West. Keep your eyes peeled folks.

Last Xmas is at the Barbican Theatre in Plymouth from 15 - 24 Dec. Tickets are £8 (£6). To book call the Barbican Theatre on 01752 267131 or email info@barbicantheatre.co.uk. www.dumbwise.co.uk magazine | 15

Stefani Nurding is one of Plymouth’s most promising young rippers and will be heading out to the One Snowboarding camp in Morzine this December. The 21 year old is also a fully paid up member of the local skate scene, skating at Central Park in Plymouth and Decoy in Newton Abbot as much as she can between hitting the slopes of France to work on perfecting tricks. She’s sponsored by Grenade, Head and Love Inc hat co, and is pushing her way into the ranks of top UK snowboarding talent. Look out – Stef is dropping in…

What’s been the biggest achievement in your snowboarding career so far? I came first in a contest last year in Avoriaz called TTR Tricks or Treat, which was quite a small event but it was pretty cool for me because from there I met a lot of girls who I could travel to other events with. Are you a competitive rider? I like a bit of competition between friends as it can be a laugh but I mainly just like to learn new stuff just for myself. I am super excited to be going on the One Snowboarding camp this year as I think being around so many other people who want to progress will push my riding really quickly. It will definitely be easier with so many top UK riders around. What’s your favourite trick? I like gap to boardslides on kink rails, it just feels nice. Which new trick would you love to learn but haven’t yet mastered? I’d like to learn BS 720s off kickers this year... hopefully I can learn them on the camp! Scariest moment whilst snowboarding? I don’t think I have had any really scary ones (touch wood) 16 |

What do you do when you’re not snowboarding? I skateboard as much as I can, go on skate trips and work a bit too. I went to Malmö in Sweden a lot over summer, which was fun because the skateparks there are massive and all the people are really nice. I write for the girls website www. skatergirl.co.uk which is a really good source for info about girls events all over Europe. I also spend a bit of

How did you bag your first sponsorship deal? I just went riding all the time and then started to go to events and get some good results. Dan Wakeham from One Snowboarding has helped me out a lot, and I’m now sponsored by Grenade, Head and Love Inc. I am also on flow for Etnies for skateboarding. I recently joined the Head team and can’t wait to ride their boards this season.

What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are just to progress as much as I can and enter a lot more contests. I would definitely like to do some more filming this year. This season I am going to the Roxy Chicken Jam and the Nikita Chikita Swiss tour – I like the atmosphere of the girls contests as almost everyone knows each other, and everyone wants to see each other do well. I am glad I’ll be training with One Snowboarding before I go to any events this season, I think it will help me to build a better competition run.

Where did you learn to snowboard? Avoriaz, in the French Alps

“Last season I knuckled a big kicker and kneed myself in the face... I was convinced I had broken my jaw...” time on my own blog, which you can read at www.fuschia2. wordpress.com What’s your favourite South West skate spot? Central Park in Plymouth and Decoy in Newton Abbot. I like Central as it’s close to my house and there are always other people to skate with there. I like Decoy as its like a mini Malmö. Shout outs? Dan Wakeham (One Snowboarding), Nick Atkins, Prime Skateshop, Lucas Brammall, Gilly Segrave, Will Nangle, Penny Cross and Stewart Monk... and loads of other people too.

Snowboarding If you snowboard, chances are you don’t get much of a chance to shred at home in the South West. So when you do get to hit the slopes, you might need a bit of coaching to get you up to speed or to help you progress. And who better to coach you than a team that includes some of the UK’s top professional riders? One Snowboarding are running their first camps this month, and the team of coaches includes British Freestyle head coach Hamish McKnight, 2009 X-Games Slopestyle gold medallist Jenny Jones, two time Olympian Lesley Mckenna and Plymouth based former Olympic snowboarder Dan Wakeham. We caught up with Dan for a chat about the One Snowboarding camps – the first of which takes place this month out in Morzine, France. What do you have in store for your students at the camps? The public camps are open to anyone who can already snowboard who wants to push their riding to the next level. For those that just want to have a bit of fun, we will be there to give tips, but for those who wish to really go all out we can offer expert coaching and guidance. Development Camps are strictly invite only and are for the UK’s most talented and promising freestyle snowboarders. If you think you deserve an invite to a Development Camp, you can upload a short video clip showcasing your skills to www.mpora.com and send us the link. If we like what we see, you’ll be getting an invite. After the December camps, the next ones are in March. Photographer Nick Atkins and videographer Stewart Monk are on board for the December camp, so the riders will not only get to progress but might get photos in magazines and video exposure on various snowboard websites. What will you be doing when you’re not coaching on the camps? After years of travelling and training with the British Team, I’m just going to sit back, chill and shred with my mates. When I’m back in Plymouth I am team manager for the local skate shop Prime on Ebrington Street – so that keeps me busy. What do you think of the facilities for snow sports in the South West? It would be nice to have a snowdome, after travelling to all of them across the country, it seems that Plymouth has been a little left behind. Maybe it’s not too late for Plymouth’s Life Centre (Central Park) to include a snowdome in their plans?

I first tried it in Tignes on a school trip, then my dad used to take me to the dryslope in Plymouth most weeks until I was old enough to drive. Set up? At the moment I ride a Gnu Riders choice 157 with Union Bindings and 32Boots. Angles 18/-9, pretty wide! How did you bag your first sponsorship deal? Pure luck really! From the start I was getting help from Bude based skate shop Airculture (www.airculture.co.uk). One day I got invited on a photo shoot in Chamonix, it ended up running as a feature in a magazine, which turned into more photoshoots and more features. Westbeach got in contact and I’m still with them today! Then more and more sponsors came and went. I really appreciate all the help I have had! Now I’m sponsored by Westbeach and Attla who are both amazing. What’s been the biggest achievement in your snowboarding career so far? This year I passed the ISIA tech course, which is the highest level in coaching. It was really hard! Also, a photo of me was published in the photo issue of Transworld Snowboarding, the most popular snowboard magazine in the world. That’s a pretty big achievement for me. What’s your favourite trick? Backflips feel the best, but my favourite has to be a backside 540 nosegrab. Which new trick would you love to learn but haven’t yet mastered? Anything double corked and 900 or above! Scariest moment whilst snowboarding? I thought I’d broken my back twice, turned out I hadn’t though!

“Backflips feel the best, but my favourite has to be a backside 540 nosegrab.” What do you do when you’re not snowboarding? Surfing or skateboarding. I worked at a surf school this summer, and I have been helping to run some skate contests for the local kids. What’s your favourite South West skate spot? Bude Skatepark, because the Airculture guys and I were so involved in getting it there, plus its right by the beach! What’s your favourite surf spot in the South West? My local beach, Crooklets in Bude, because its got wicked banks and all my friends surf there. What do you think of the provision for snowsports in the South West? Would you like to see more dryslopes, or better facilities for people to try snowboarding? It’s not so good right now, but we do have a lot of riders, and people like Attla are really pushing snowboarding in the South West. I think we have such potential to make use of the surf/snow crossover, so its more a case of when... Any shout outs? Huge thanks to Danny and Bille-jo at Attla, Sue at Westbeach, James Stentiford, Neil McNab, Keith Mcintosh who sadly passed away earlier this year, all my Bude friends and my amazing wife, Charlotte Sweet. www.myspace.com/jamessweet101 magazine | 19

A Fine Day For Sailing My Baby Loves Pop Music (Pop Noise Records)

Hot on the heels of this year’s debut, comes album number 2 from Exeter’s craftsmen of true indie pop. Bright chiming guitars and 60s vocal harmonies set the scene, and writer and main vocalist, Matthew Stead knows how to apply just the right measure of wit and cynicism to his lyrics. Some of the songs are given a rework from earlier versions, and sound all the better for it. What’s there not to like? Arash Torabi

Sparrow and The Workshop Into the Wild (Distiller Records)

Debut mini album carrying on the good work of this new band’s self-titled EP out earlier this year. In a similar vein to Broken Records, theirs is a cinematic rollercoaster of a journey, subtly hinting at country and folk. As songwriters, they show plenty of imagination, particularly on the album’s single, Horse’s Grin. My preference is more with the dark and haunting melodies, rather than the disjointed stop-start power chords. Arash Torabi

Weezer

Raditude (DGC/Interscope) I’ve never really warmed to Weezer or the assumed genius of Rivers Cuomo. I think it has something to do with the interminable embracing of pubescent bubblegum party pop, even if it is with a wry smile. ‘Raditude’ will no doubt split the pack as all Weezer albums tend, even strive, to but I couldn’t care less. Having said that, ‘Put Me Back Together’ and ‘I Want You To’ are sweet enough nerd-rock ditties that’ll have indie clubs bouncing ‘til the break of day. Backbone

Arthur Walker Animal Nights (dBs Music)

The problem with constructing a sound that strives to be awkward, wayward and forward-thinking all at the same time is that things can get a little detached at times. Not so Plymouth’s Arthur Walker. Sure their debut album is a sprawling mass of mutating time signatures, frazzled new wave passions and nervous Cardiacs energy but the likes of ‘My Headphone Attracts’ reveal that the band are just as adept at penning passages of melodic pop brilliance. They deserve your attention. Backbone

The Skints

Live. Breathe. Build. Believe (Rebel Alliance)

What’s not to love, unless you’re in the BNP or Morrissey? Of course, combining dancehall with punk rock is as old as punk itself but no band in fusion history has nailed the reggae part with such panache and authenticity since Bad Brains, due in no small part to an array of amazing singers. To wit: the cleansing power of ‘Mindless’, the reclaim-the-street ragga party of ‘Contemplations Of The Modern Rudeboy’, the defiant beauty of ‘Roanna’s Song’; songs with a past, present and future. All hail. Backbone

DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH UPR and onec Records have teamed up to release a 10” vinyl EP by Plymouth loungecore trio, ROOFTOP GAMBLER, and it’s an understated work of beauty. Sleeved in illustrations by local artist Clare Owen, and pressed onto heavy yellow plastic, ‘Turned Out The Light’ is four songs of delicate yet confident post-punk introspection harnessed by the emotionally textured baritone of Neil Ewart, the likes of which you rarely hear British bands exploring. ‘Old Town Stories’ is a disarmingly pretty paean with all the melodic intelligence of fIREHOSE; ‘What Have You Done?’ and ‘Yet To Feel’ harnesses the gentle power of Karate, while ‘Leaning Tree’ betrays a tremolo-treated fondness for the downbeat indie grace of The National. A must-have, must-listen. (Released in February 2010.) www.myspace.com/therooftopgambler

ROCK SHOW DEMO OF THE MONTH As it’s the end of 2009 we have looked at the demos we have been sent this year that just missed out on becoming our Demo Of the Month. The one that stood out most was Separate Ways by RAIDER, fusing outstanding shredding work on lead guitar and an over all sound that wouldn’t be out of place played next to the likes of Machine Head or Metallica Raider. These guys definitely have a lot to look forward to in 2010. Check them out at www.raider.uk.com

When a modern young woman – Bristol-based SARAH GOUGH – can sit at a piano, open her mouth and sound like Carole King without even trying, I’m in love. But, alas, when the full band kicks in it sometimes sounds a bit pedestrian, edging too close to Alanis Morissette territory. ‘My Beloved’ is a fantastic song with starlit pianos and plucked guitars but is reduced to café-bar fodder when the band step it up a gear, in much the same way that Jeff Buckley’s vulnerability was occasionally compromised by his fellow musos. ‘Dreaming’, on the other hand, allows her true emotional core to shine through as everyone else holds back. It’s not for nothing that Joni Mitchell’s towering achievement was the harrowingly sparse ‘Blue’. www.myspace. com/sarahgoughmusic Exeter metallers, RED MIST, have an EP out on Bored Stiff Records this month called ‘Last Dance Before Doomsday’. Can you guess what it is yet? Of course! Raging growlers munching on wood splinters while a juddering, thunderous sludge of ‘brutal’ metalcore beatdowns, Berzerker blastbeats and Maiden guitar arpeggios cascade around them like nailbombs. They’re good at it – aren’t they all these days? – but with a self-serving scene that’s stuffed to breaking point with this kind of formulaic gruntnoise, there are only so many bands that can jump on board before the whole ship capsizes. Until then, young metal fans will lap this up with unbridled ferocity ‘til it’s time for mum to cook the tea. Nowt wrong with that. www.myspace.com/ redmistuk

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, Drum Theatre, Royal Parade, 01752 267222, www. theatreroyal.com, 7.45pm, £12 It’s almost Christmas time at the Drum so that sees the theatre being put safely (?) back in the hands of Kesselofski & Fiske for their yearly visit. This year they present a tale of murder, intrigue, cunning and mystery, loosely based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. What had it been, looming through the darkness on the moors of Dartmoor, that could have inspired such terror in a man that he died of fright? Was it, as the local people believed, a hideous hound of hell? Or was it a creature of infinite patience and cunning, with a smiling face and a murderous heart? If you’re thinking “that’s an easy choice; I don’t believe in hellhounds and, anyway, I’ve read the book and know who the murderer is”, allow us to draw your attention to the words “loosely based” in the paragraph above this one. Be warned, you know nothing!

Falmouth, 01326 212300 www. thepoly.org. Dir: Shane Acker, starring Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, and Jennifer Connelly 2009/US/80 mins In a post-apocalyptic future, sackcloth doll 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) wakes to find more of his kind struggling for survival against terrifying machines – and rallies his cohorts for one last chance to save humanity. This pushes computer animation away from cute day-glo daylight into the shadows and although the story-telling isn’t yet at Pixar’s level, it introduces director Acker as a new talent to watch closely. Coco Before Chanel (12A) 4 – 9 Dec: Plymouth Arts Centre 01752 206114 www. plymouthartscentre.org Dir: Anne Fontaine, starring Audrey Tautou, Benoit Poelvoorde, Alessandro Nivola. France, 2009/France/105 mins Back by popular demand, Audrey Tautou finally lays to rest the ghost of Amelie by turning in a star performance as the famous 20th century icon, Coco Chanel. Fontaine directs a well-dressed portrait of the designer’s journey from her humble beginnings as a provincial seamstress to the salons of Parisian haute couture. Meticulous period detail reveals how Coco forged a style that would revolutionise the way women dressed in the twentieth century. With a lovely central performance from the ever brilliant Audrey Tautou, Coco Before Chanel is definitely the most stylish film you will see all year.

once loved is causing a conundrum. Despite outrageous efforts and misplaced goodwill from his football fan mates, Eric continues to sink into depression. In desperate times it takes a special friend – and life coaching from the legendary French footballer Eric Cantona - to challenge Eric to journey into the most perilous territory of all – the past. Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp and Jude Law. 2009/122 mins. Visionary director Terry Gilliam’s fantastical morality tale tells of the charismatic Dr Parnassus (Plummer) and his travelling magic show. Parnassus has a dark secret: he traded his soul with the devil (Tom Waits) for endless youth on condition that he surrenders his firstborn on her sixteenth birthday. Now he must fight to keep his daughter (Cole) assisted by her suitor (Ledger). When Heath Ledger died half way through the shoot the creator of Brazil and The Fisher King drafted in Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell to complete the film. What emerges is a creative triumph as characters pass through a magical looking glass into an alternative reality where souls are saved or condemned in one man’s imagination. Looking For Eric (15)

Centre, 01752 206 114 www. plymouthartscentre.org Dir: Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, and Simon Helberg. 2009/US/106 mins After the gloriously success No Country for Old Men the Coen Brothers enter the late 60s and the resoundingly normal world of Larry Gopnik. He is a good husband and father, a conscientious professor at a quiet Midwestern university and always tries to do the right thing. But one day, everything starts to go wrong; his wife leaves him and his career is put in jeopardy by a series of false accusations against him. Larry’s attempts to find a balance and be a righteous man in the face of his vexations is as brilliant a character study as the Coens have ever done. The droll humour of his attempts to seek guidance from a succession of uninspiring or unavailable rabbis is wonderful. The Coens at their absolute best.

She finds herself a job as a magician’s cleaning lady in Howl’s Moving Castle – a clanking mobile residence with huge chicken legs – in order to regain her youth. One of Studio Ghibli’s best movies and should be enjoyed for its beautiful, intricate, subtle, enchanting sense of fun.

Dir: Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason. 1959/US/131 mins A classic thriller from the Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock. Ad-man Roger Thornhill (Carey Grant) is abducted by two unknown kidnappers. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, which is also home to the Navi, a race that are more physically capable than humans, although considered primitive. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora’s forests in search of valuable minerals, the Navi defend their threatened territory. Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this invasion. The effects look out of this world and director James Cameron has a reputation for pioneering the latest technological developments in cinema and this time he’s turned his hand to 3D. Should be nothing short of groundbreaking.

He is plagued by paranoia and prone to intense self analysis, and his artist wife Adele’s lack of interest in his problems drives him closer to his leading lady Claire and devoted box office assistant Hazel. As always with writer/director Charlie Kaufman this is unconventional, surreal, but is hugely enjoyable.

LIVE Quel surprise! We were out on tour again. First stop, Gravesend (Red Lion, 10th Oct). Not the prettiest of places but an awesome venue. First up was a predictable punk band whose name I can’t recall, probably because they were rude and shit. Ska-punks, TYRANNOSAURUS ALAN, weren’t rude and therefore get a mention, although their interminably optimistic, horn-fuelled skankery made me feel a little weathered. No fear, for Essex duo, TORN OUT, were on hand with some smart vignettes about street life, sounding like Billy Bragg’s younger cousin. Local mini-legends and evident draw of the night, 3DBS DOWN, played the Wildhearts card to decent effect, with strong harmonies, crafted riffs and dodgy barnets all scrabbling for attention. Onto Brighton (11th Oct). After our usual ritual of devouring Red Veg burgers and ambling around The Lanes, we proceeded to sweat our balls off on stage at the bijou Prince Albert. Ex-Small Brown Bike noiseniks, MILLIONS, took post-hardcore through a dense, gnarly overgrowth and came up smelling of putrefied roses; Portsmouth’s ATTACK! VIPERS! were the epitome of tasteful modern hardcore; Brighton supergroup of sorts, THE NORTH POLE, showed that life goes on after The Steal; while THREE SUMMERS STRONG brought the Gaslight Anthem earnestness. It was a relief to arrive in Norwich without being washed away by biblicalsized floods this time (Marquee, 12th Oct). London trio, WONK UNIT, were great X-rated fun, although on paper it may not seem so. Their brutish pop-punk is entertaining enough but it’s singer, Alex’s sporadic poems that set them apart. Part true love confession, part Tourette’s tirade, it was like witnessing the underbelly of romance being tickled with rusty nails. Our first of two shows with Michigan punks, NORTH LINCOLN, was a disaster as my voice was in tatters (Junction, Bristol, 13th Oct) but the second was magnificent (Fawcett Inn, Portsmouth, 25th Oct) not least because NL were on fire. Theirs may be a tried and tested, No Ideafriendly crunch but they do it with such passion and precision that it’s impossible to be cynical. Equally so, Portsmouth’s finest, YOU ME & THE ATOM BOMB: a band who eschew the mindless thrash-out in favour of powerful, inventive hooks and a huge dollop of underground honesty. Brummies, BIG CITY PLAN, made good with a guitar shimmer straight from the annals of Hüsker Dü; leaving NEW SET OF BRUISES to pay tribute to their old Samiam records. Onto Nottingham (Seven, 14th Oct). Wonk Unit did their gleefully grubby thing once again followed by homeboys, THE BREADCHASERS, who peddled brass-laden rock’n’reggae with a likeably loose tenor. We headed home for a break, just in time to catch a double-whammy of instrumental power-driving courtesy of Texas noodlers, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU, and Belfast’s AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 16th Oct). The usually astounding ASIWYFA suffered from a less-than-bludgeoning sound but still came out of it unscathed; while TWDY’s well-developed, simmer-boil-cool formula wore a bit thin after the third climax. Up in Worcester, Plymouth indie-rockers, LESS THAN ME, were treating the town to some indie rock croonage, while local lads, FIGHTS & FIRES, busied themselves throwing post-hardcore tantrums (Marrs Bar, 17th Oct). Openers, Plymouth’s ARTHUR WALKER, were on hand to show that dynamic, lateral-thinking new wave can still pack a melodic punch when it’s executed well enough. We crossed paths with artful indie trio, TUBELORD, for a couple shows; the first of which (Walk The Line ‘festival’, Frog & Fiddle, Cheltenham, 30th Oct) also hosted the awesome, fiddles ‘n’ firestorm, new-noise of Hereford’s TALONS and the über-tech post-rock of THIS TOWN NEEDS GUNS – whose guitarist is something of a quick-pickin’, digittappin’ genius. The ‘Lord themselves were awesome, especially in York (Junction, 1st Nov), combining faintly complex, herky-jerky rhythms with big slabs of harmonic suss; although singer, Jo Prendergrast’s poetryreading interlude was ill-advised, to say the least. Even the bouncers came in for a chuckle. We spent Halloween in Newport (Le Pub, 31st Oct). There are worse places, but not many. Dolled up as zombified ‘50s rock’n’roll icons we shared the stage with Sunderland punks, BROKEN FEW, a band who lovingly pilfer from the Propagandhi template. And so to the final leg, Leeds (Subculture, 2nd Nov); a great way to finish a tour, accompanied by the tight Belvedere-esque harmonies of NANA’S REVENGE and slamming hardcore bruisers, CUTTING CLASS. Back home for good, just in time to catch the dazzling post-punk intricacies of Glasgow’s SUPER ADVENTURE CLUB (Skiving Scholar, Plymouth, 3rd Nov). If the thought of Future Of The Left having a brain haemorrhage tickles your fancy then you’ll love this trio’s insanely competent spazzcore, oozing with off-kilter hooks and Zappa-friendly idiosyncrasies. I wanted more. See-ya bye.
