NEWS Pimp My Stand

THIS MONTH WE ARE... …excited. We’ve got that “lets-squeezeit-and-try-guessingwhat-it-is” feeling. That feeling that makes you think, “If no one is looking, is it ok to rip the paper, sneak a look inside, then sellotape it closed again?” Granted, this feeling is probably only going to last until we have to actually start Christmas shopping… then we will most likely be screamingoverspendingtinsel-strangledRudolph-nosed messes. In an effort to avoid the festive blues, we will just try to remember that this is a nice time of year to remind the ones you love just how much they mean to you. So, here it is. Merry Christmas! We love you all (you know who you are), we appreciate your continued support and we can’t wait to get stuck in to 2010. Boosh 6|

magazine

247 Magazine is offering designers, illustrators, photographers (and anyone else who is feeling creative!) the chance to submit a design for our slick looking metal magazine distribution stands. These stands are used at the most popular distribution points for the magazine across the South West, and at the moment they’re looking rather naked so we are looking for fresh, cool designs to customize them. The best designs will be mounted on the sides of the stands. The 247 team will also aim to locate the stand in the winning designer’s home town or city where ever possible. Each design MUST feature the 247 logo (email us at 247@outofhand.co.uk with PIMP MY STAND in the subject line for a submission kit) – and it’s up to you how you get it in there. Your design must be 225mm wide x 937mm high, and as each stand has two sides, your design should take this into consideration. You can also submit as many designs as you like! Competition closes on 31 December.

Smirnoff Creative Grants are up for grabs for anyone, promoter or not, who has an idea for an event that will make people look back on and think, “I was there!” Last year, Cardiff’s Matt the Hat won a grant to put on his Secret Carnival so there’s proof that it could be you! The judging panel of experts includes Rob Da Bank and the Queens of Noize, and applications for Creative Grants can be submitted via the Smirnoff Facebook page after becoming a fan. The closing date for applications is 11 December 2009, when the experts will select the four most progressive and forward thinking experiences to each receive £5000. The resulting nights will form a season of events across the UK throughout Spring 2010. Go to www.facebook.com/SmirnoffGB to submit your idea.

THE EDGE Email news to: 247@outofhand.co.uk Competing bids to build an indoor 15,000 seat music and sport arena in Bristol have been unveiled. The plans, put together by rival developers, comprise building it close to Temple Meads railway station or near Bristol City’s proposed new stadium. The council says by having the arena and football ground in the same place, transport plans could be shared. But architect George Ferguson backing the Temple Meads plan - said the Ashton Vale site would be too car-dependent. Councillor Simon Cook, deputy leader of Bristol City Council, said having the venue next to the football ground made sense. “It would be very compatible because it can use the same infrastructure, the same transport plan - the bus rapid transit is going around the stadium with a commuter line straight into the city,” he said. “Everything is there for the arena to make sense.” We’ll see which one wins out and hopefully one of them will actually build it, rather than just talking about it like the SWRDA did. The annual Big Chill Festival, held in the Malvern Hills has been sold to Festival Republic, part owners of Glastonbury Festival and promoters of the Reading and Leeds festivals. Insiders to the deal claim the sale will ensure the long-term future of the festival, which struggled to sell tickets for this summers event, but others worry the whole ethos will change now it has lost it’s indepentent ownership. The other Big Chill ventures, including the Big Chill Bar in Bristol are not included in the deal and remain unaffected by this sale.

Dub to Dubstep

With support and funding by the Arts Council, Birmingham based Punch Records, Channel One Sound System and Vagabondz are putting on a six date national Dub to Dubstep Tour, playing at The Trinity Centre, Bristol on 4 Dec. The idea of the tour is to demonstrate the relevance and relationship of dub reggae and sound system culture to dubstep, one of Bristol’s hottest musical exports right now. Channel One Sound System is one of Europe’s best known dub reggae sound systems, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. Alongside Channel One (with Mikey Dread on the decks), support comes from Kromestar, Gentleman’s Dub Club, RSD and The Uplifter, as well as support from local acts Pandemic, Sparkerboi and Frilla.Tickets £7 in adv, more on the door.

Rock Lottery to unite & Challenge Musicians Cardiff’s first ever rock lottery, launched to raise funds for the Paul Ward Memorial Fund, takes place on Saturday 5 December at the Loft, Dempsey’s in the heart of the city. So, what’s it all about? Well, the concept of the Rock Lottery is simple. At 10am on 5 Dec, the names of 25 local musicians are thrown into a hat. A draw will be made at random, pulling out drummers, guitarists, singers and whatever-the-hell-else is in there to form a bunch of completely new bands. Each of these new bands is then locked in their own rehearsal room, where they have to write a four or five song set of completely new, original music. In the evening at Dempseys, these uber-side-projects will take turns playing out the fruits of the days labour. Friendships will blossom, boundaries will be broken, whole new genres will be born. Musical differences will explode. There will undoubtedly be disagreements, probably even tears, and maybe even some new long-term band line-ups? By the end of it all the bands will have experienced something completely unlike what’s gone before, and along the way everyone gets to raise some money for a very worthy cause. Bands starting out include Truckers Of Husk, Threatmantics, The Death Of Her Money, Zwolf, Right Hand Left Hand, Evils, Hunters, The Victorian English Gentlemans Club, Drone, The Gentle Good, Hail! The planes, K U T O S I S & Denuo. Bands kick from writing from 10am, and the evening kicks off at 8pm, tickets only £5, with all proceeds going to The Paul Ward Memorial Fund, which provides funding for research into The Wilms Tumour at The Institute Of Cancer Research. magazine | 9

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH Motion Ramp Park, Bristol 9pm – 5am, £25adv

For NYE 09, BUGGEDOut!, Arcadia and local Bristolian promoters The Blast and Just Jack have organised a new year’s eve spectacular at Motion, Bristol. With five arenas occupying the skatepark, nightclub, night garden, a big top in the car park, (and an entire disused warehouse next-door housing Arcadia’s flamboyant theatrical constructions), this stands to be one of the biggest events the city has seen. Arcadia’s critically acclaimed festival season has taken in Glade, Bestival, Ireland’s Electric Picnic and Glastonbury where it hosted its own area. This new year’s eve it will fill a warehouse with its retro-futuristic scrap-yard creations. Flame-spitting Victorian lampposts and smoke-spewing metallic trees will frame performers hanging from cranes and scurrying across the rafters. Their futuristic creation – the love-child of a rocket jet and a DJ booth – the ‘Afterburner’ (which saw defining sets from Fatboy Slim at Glastonbury and Carl Cox at Bestival) will provide a soundtrack from the likes of rave legends Altern8, replete with lasers and pyrotechnic displays. Meanwhile punters can choose from an extensive music line-up including Simian Mobile Disco, Friendly Fires, Rusko, and Roni Size. Superpromoters BUGGEDOut! take over the venue’s skatepark, home to Channel 4’s Skins parties, while locals The Blast and Just Jack host the nightclub’s two rooms and the ‘Lost Disco’, a venue accessible only via a tunnel into the carpark.

Just over four years ago, two lovable idiots (aka Spree and Ram) came together to start up a brand new clubnight in Bristol. Their mission was to play the best dubstep, drum and bass, and anything with a banging bassline – oh, and to party in fancy dress… and so, the intriguing concept of Penguin Dance was born. Since its inception, it has become known as one of the most fun party style clubnights in the city, and has seen the likes of Beardyman, Rusko, Dillinja, Mary Ann Hobbs and Altern-8 amongst others, taking to the stage alongside a whole host of talented local DJs. The Penguin Dance team have hosted nights at venues across Bristol, and with room 2 featuring cheesy novelty sets and fancy dress themes encompassing everything from wrestlers and cheerleaders to the hat and tash party, these guys really do know how to throw the most fun parties. 247 Magazine chats to Spree as he recovers from the recent Penguin Dance fourth birthday celebrations… Explain the concept behind Penguin Dance – why did you set it up? We just wanted to party and listen to the kind of music we liked whilst giving ourselves the chance to wear fancy dress costumes and do really silly things. We always wanted it to be more than your average club night so we brought in lots of extras including cheerleaders, circus acts, giveaways, fancy dress and even some stand up comedy. Who is in the Penguin Dance team? Ram (aka Thunderchats) and I run the show but there’s a massive team involved; promo crew, resident DJs, door team, and all the family who come down and party each month. What kind of music do you play? Originally it was all about drum and bass but our sound has evolved to include dubstep, electro, fidget house, breaks, garage and anything with a decent bassline. There’s also those legendary novelty sets in room 2 though… What’s the typical atmosphere at a Penguin Dance night? Fun loving party vibes where you can hear the best DJs and cutting edge music whilst dancing next to a squid, a badger, or a caveman. Then walk into room 2 just in time to hear the third rewind of the Neighbours theme tune… 14 |

magazine

Can you describe the typical Penguin Dance night punter? Not at all. I don’t think there is one. You have to like to party though. Which artists have made guest appearances at Penguin Dance and who has been the best? There have been some AMAZING sets over the last four years but for us, Beardyman vs JFB is always incredible. N-Type’s first appearance and Kenny Ken and Joe Peng’s jungle set was up there. Rusko, Stenchman, Dillinja and Appleblim’s grime sets also spring to mind. Goodpop and Duke De Cassis were unforgettable room 2 sets (but you had to be there)! Can you tell us about the most memorable Penguin Dance night so far? There was one night that was particularly memorable. We like to try new things and we thought it would be funny to get some strippers to put on a show on the main stage at Motion. Not everyone agreed, but then again you can’t please everyone! How has Penguin Dance survived four years in the very cluttered/over populated Bristol club scene? It’s all in the name: Penguin Dance. These hardy creatures stick together and manage to survive in the harsh arctic environments. Also people want to let their hair down on a night out. There’s a time and a place for chin stroking but it’s definitely not at Penguin Dance. What’s next for Penguin Dance? We’re planning our next night at Motion for January and start monthly nights at Lab in February (currently we’re bi-monthly) and have some really exciting acts lined up. We’re going back to our roots too with more silliness all round and some smaller intimate parties where people can really let their hair down. And we’d love to bring our crazy antics to the grassy fields of a festival somewhere, sometime… The next party is the Penguin Dance X-mas Grotto with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Calvertron on 18 December. at Lab, Bristol www.twitter.com/penguindance www.myspace.com/penguindancebristol Photography: Sim Higginson Words: LTB

“Due to financial circumstances we’re resorting to sleeping in our van, which has a hole in the roof and no lights inside. The lack of showers will be problematic, especially when it comes to smells…” It’s official, Welsh quartet Straight Lines are living the rock ‘n’ roll dream. The deathtrap van scenario is a rite of passage for every rock band worth its salt; a test to prove that the music is far more important then personal hygiene and back pain.

Their debut single ‘Versus The Allegiance’ is out this month (7 December) and a debut album is on the way early next year, an album the band simply describe in three words as “twelve great songs” – enough said. Despite the distance to be covered in a cramped van, the band are already happily getting into their biggest tour to date. “We’re looking forward to every date because all the venues are going to be different,” they said. “We’re playing pubs, clubs and auditoriums so it’ll be a great experience.” They do, however still understand the importance of relaxing with other tunes than their own, recommending to 247’s readers the latest Weezer album, Twin Atlantic and Every Time I Die’s new Recently signing to Xtra Mile Recordings, and with supporting albums, as well as Tiger Please’s debut mini album; “Our bassist just produced it, so we’re loving that at the moment.” slots for metal heavy-weights Motorhead and indie stars Kids in Glass Houses lined up, 2009 looks set to have been With 2009 booked right up and plans already in place for a special year for friends Tom Jenkins (guitar/vocals), Dane the future, what has 2010 got in store for Straight Lines? Campbell (drums), James Pugh (guitar) and Todd Campbell “Hopefully touring as much as possible,” they add, “Maybe (bass). With their November/December tour weaving through Wales, up to Leeds, and down to London’s hallowed even treat ourselves to a Travelodge or two! It would be amazing to get on to a few festivals next summer too!” Hammersmith Apollo and back, these four guys have been Here’s hoping they do just that, because it is clear that the given the chance to show what their own dynamic brand of group are dedicated to their music and are rightly excited at guitar rock is all about. the opportunity to play it to all kinds of audiences, so it’s extra nice to know they’ve got a good sense of humor thrown in Fact. Straight Lines come from the same town as living as well. And how do we know about their sense of humour, legend and out-and-out national treasure, Tom Jones. Their you ask? Well, when faced with the dilemma of being forced singer is even named after the great man, but that’s where comparisons to Wales’ finest export finish. Straight Lines are to choose a song to cover at the end of their set, the band here to carve their own niche, and told 247 Magazine, “We’re answered, “That’s easy, definitely ‘Sex Bomb’ by Tom Jones... the encore would be ‘Delilah’!” My, my, my…! not trying to sound like anyone else…” Now on Xtra Mile Recordings alongside the likes of Frank Turner and alt-rock act Reuben, the band’s hard work seems to have started paying off. They told us, “Its really awesome because we’ve been listening to bands on Xtra Mile for years, so its great to be a part of their roster.” Growing up digesting the noisy likes of Weezer, rock gods the Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Brand New, and At The Drive-in, among others, the band are now ready to release their own take on the genre.

Debut Album ‘Persistence In This Game’ will be available from iTunes and stores from 1st February. Single ‘Versus The Allegiance’ out 7th of December. Straight Lines play Hobos in Brigend, Wales on 5 Dec and Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, Wales on 22 Dec. Check out www.myspace.com/ straightlines for further tour details. Stefani Nurding is one of Plymouth’s most promising young rippers and will be heading out to the One Snowboarding camp in Morzine this December. The 21 year old is also a fully paid up member of the local skate scene, skating at Central Park in Plymouth and Decoy in Newton Abbot as much as she can between hitting the slopes of France to work on perfecting tricks. She’s sponsored by Grenade, Head and Love Inc hat co, and is pushing her way into the ranks of top UK snowboarding talent. Look out – Stef is dropping in…

What’s been the biggest achievement in your snowboarding career so far? I came first in a contest last year in Avoriaz called TTR Tricks or Treat, which was quite a small event but it was pretty cool for me because from there I met a lot of girls who I could travel to other events with. Are you a competitive rider? I like a bit of competition between friends as it can be a laugh but I mainly just like to learn new stuff just for myself. I am super excited to be going on the One Snowboarding camp this year as I think being around so many other people who want to progress will push my riding really quickly. It will definitely be easier with so many top UK riders around. What’s your favourite trick? I like gap to boardslides on kink rails, it just feels nice. Which new trick would you love to learn but haven’t yet mastered? I’d like to learn BS 720s off kickers this year... hopefully I can learn them on the camp! Scariest moment whilst snowboarding? I don’t think I have had any really scary ones (touch wood) 16 |

What do you do when you’re not snowboarding? I skateboard as much as I can, go on skate trips and work a bit too. I went to Malmö in Sweden a lot over summer, which was fun because the skateparks there are massive and all the people are really nice. I write for the girls website www. skatergirl.co.uk which is a really good source for info about girls events all over Europe. I also spend a bit of

How did you bag your first sponsorship deal? I just went riding all the time and then started to go to events and get some good results. Dan Wakeham from One Snowboarding has helped me out a lot, and I’m now sponsored by Grenade, Head and Love Inc. I am also on flow for Etnies for skateboarding. I recently joined the Head team and can’t wait to ride their boards this season.

What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are just to progress as much as I can and enter a lot more contests. I would definitely like to do some more filming this year. This season I am going to the Roxy Chicken Jam and the Nikita Chikita Swiss tour – I like the atmosphere of the girls contests as almost everyone knows each other, and everyone wants to see each other do well. I am glad I’ll be training with One Snowboarding before I go to any events this season, I think it will help me to build a better competition run.

Where did you learn to snowboard? Avoriaz, in the French Alps

“Last season I knuckled a big kicker and kneed myself in the face... I was convinced I had broken my jaw...” time on my own blog, which you can read at www.fuschia2. wordpress.com What’s your favourite South West skate spot? Central Park in Plymouth and Decoy in Newton Abbot. I like Central as it’s close to my house and there are always other people to skate with there. I like Decoy as its like a mini Malmö. Shout outs? Dan Wakeham (One Snowboarding), Nick Atkins, Prime Skateshop, Lucas Brammall, Gilly Segrave, Will Nangle, Penny Cross and Stewart Monk... and loads of other people too.

Snowboarding If you snowboard, chances are you don’t get much of a chance to shred at home in the South West. So when you do get to hit the slopes, you might need a bit of coaching to get you up to speed or to help you progress. And who better to coach you than a team that includes some of the UK’s top professional riders? One Snowboarding are running their first camps this month, and the team of coaches includes British Freestyle head coach Hamish McKnight, 2009 X-Games Slopestyle gold medallist Jenny Jones, two time Olympian Lesley Mckenna and Plymouth based former Olympic snowboarder Dan Wakeham. We caught up with Dan for a chat about the One Snowboarding camps – the first of which takes place this month out in Morzine, France. What do you have in store for your students at the camps? The public camps are open to anyone who can already snowboard who wants to push their riding to the next level. For those that just want to have a bit of fun, we will be there to give tips, but for those who wish to really go all out we can offer expert coaching and guidance. Development Camps are strictly invite only and are for the UK’s most talented and promising freestyle snowboarders. If you think you deserve an invite to a Development Camp, you can upload a short video clip showcasing your skills to www.mpora.com and send us the link. If we like what we see, you’ll be getting an invite. After the December camps, the next ones are in March. Photographer Nick Atkins and videographer Stewart Monk are on board for the December camp, so the riders will not only get to progress but might get photos in magazines and video exposure on various snowboard websites. What will you be doing when you’re not coaching on the camps? After years of travelling and training with the British Team, I’m just going to sit back, chill and shred with my mates. When I’m back in Plymouth I am team manager for the local skate shop Prime on Ebrington Street – so that keeps me busy. What do you think of the facilities for snow sports in the South West? It would be nice to have a snowdome, after travelling to all of them across the country, it seems that Plymouth has been a little left behind. Maybe it’s not too late for Plymouth’s Life Centre (Central Park) to include a snowdome in their plans?

A Fine Day For Sailing My Baby Loves Pop Music (Pop Noise Records)

Hot on the heels of this year’s debut, comes album number 2 from Exeter’s craftsmen of true indie pop. Bright chiming guitars and 60s vocal harmonies set the scene, and writer and main vocalist, Matthew Stead knows how to apply just the right measure of wit and cynicism to his lyrics. Some of the songs are given a rework from earlier versions, and sound all the better for it. What’s there not to like? Arash Torabi

Sparrow and The Workshop Into the Wild (Distiller Records)

Debut mini album carrying on the good work of this new band’s self-titled EP out earlier this year. In a similar vein to Broken Records, theirs is a cinematic rollercoaster of a journey, subtly hinting at country and folk. As songwriters, they show plenty of imagination, particularly on the album’s single, Horse’s Grin. My preference is more with the dark and haunting melodies, rather than the disjointed stop-start power chords. Arash Torabi

Fiddles and accordions take centre stage with this quintet’s shufflesome chanson, although they let themselves down in the vocal department and the songs tend to bypass any genuine sense of engagement. You get the feeling that Sanjuro will be enjoying their underground status for some time to come. Backbone

Weezer

Raditude (DGC/Interscope) I’ve never really warmed to Weezer or the assumed genius of Rivers Cuomo. I think it has something to do with the interminable embracing of pubescent bubblegum party pop, even if it is with a wry smile. ‘Raditude’ will no doubt split the pack as all Weezer albums tend, even strive, to but I couldn’t care less. Having said that, ‘Put Me Back Together’ and ‘I Want You To’ are sweet enough nerd-rock ditties that’ll have indie clubs bouncing ‘til the break of day. Backbone

Arthur Walker Animal Nights (dBs Music)

The problem with constructing a sound that strives to be awkward, wayward and forward-thinking all at the same time is that things can get a little detached at times. Not so Plymouth’s Arthur Walker. Sure their debut album is a sprawling mass of mutating time signatures, frazzled new wave passions and nervous Cardiacs energy but the likes of ‘My Headphone Attracts’ reveal that the band are just as adept at penning passages of melodic pop brilliance. They deserve your attention. Backbone

The Skints

Live. Breathe. Build. Believe (Rebel Alliance)

What’s not to love, unless you’re in the BNP or Morrissey? Of course, combining dancehall with punk rock is as old as punk itself but no band in fusion history has nailed the reggae part with such panache and authenticity since Bad Brains, due in no small part to an array of amazing singers. To wit: the cleansing power of ‘Mindless’, the reclaim-the-street ragga party of ‘Contemplations Of The Modern Rudeboy’, the defiant beauty of ‘Roanna’s Song’; songs with a past, present and future. All hail. Backbone

DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH UPR and onec Records have teamed up to release a 10” vinyl EP by Plymouth loungecore trio, ROOFTOP GAMBLER, and it’s an understated work of beauty. Sleeved in illustrations by local artist Clare Owen, and pressed onto heavy yellow plastic, ‘Turned Out The Light’ is four songs of delicate yet confident post-punk introspection harnessed by the emotionally textured baritone of Neil Ewart, the likes of which you rarely hear British bands exploring. ‘Old Town Stories’ is a disarmingly pretty paean with all the melodic intelligence of fIREHOSE; ‘What Have You Done?’ and ‘Yet To Feel’ harnesses the gentle power of Karate, while ‘Leaning Tree’ betrays a tremolo-treated fondness for the downbeat indie grace of The National. A must-have, must-listen. (Released in February 2010.) www.myspace.com/therooftopgambler

Exeter metallers, RED MIST, have an EP out on Bored Stiff Records this month called ‘Last Dance Before Doomsday’. Can you guess what it is yet? Of course! Raging growlers munching on wood splinters while a juddering, thunderous sludge of ‘brutal’ metalcore beatdowns, Berzerker blastbeats and Maiden guitar arpeggios cascade around them like nailbombs. They’re good at it – aren’t they all these days? – but with a selfserving scene that’s stuffed to breaking point with this kind of formulaic gruntnoise, there are only so many bands that can jump on board before the whole ship capsizes. Until then, young metal fans will lap this up with unbridled ferocity ‘til it’s time for mum to cook the tea. Nowt wrong with that. www.myspace.com/redmistuk

Defiantly out of step with the postmodern musician’s obsession with form over content, THE DAVE RICH BAND release their new download album, ‘Sails And Bridges’, this month. Dave and Co immerse themselves in the classic sounds of pop-rock past to the extent that you forget about modern inventions such as laptops, mobile phones and dogging and happily go along for the ride. Opener, ‘Driving By The Light Of The Moon’ gets straight to work with earnest piano chords and Clapton-esque guitar solos Plymouth’s POINT COUNTER POINT is the psyche- paving the way for a clutch of songs that harness the vocal airs of Sting and Paul Weller and the piano moods of Marc Cohn and folk brainchild of Steve Strong, former sticksman Bruce Hornsby. ‘Not Another Moment To Waste’ even makes a good for Elliot Whale Boy. Along with Quarantine’s Chris stab at TRB optimism. 1 – 3 Dec: The Watershed, Bristol, 0117 927 5100 www.watershed.co.uk

1 – 4 Dec: , Curzon

Community Cinema – Clevedon, 01275 871 000 www.curzon.org.uk Dir: Jane Campion, starring Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish 2009/UK/Australia/118 mins Sixteen years after The Piano Jane Campion has found renewed inspiration in a tragic romance to match the haunting intensity of that Palme D’Or winner. A surprisingly exhilarating account of the short but intense affair between the poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and his spirited neighbour Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), this is a powerful, unapologetic testament to love. The couple simmer with mystery and desire as they embark on their intense and poignantly unconsummated relationship: Keats had neither the means nor the career to financially support a wife. Every scene is filmed with a gentle precision, a loving care that creates an overwhelming sense of emotion. A beautiful, slow-burning and sensitive film that tenderly rips your heart in two. Bunny And The Bull (15)

1 – 3 Dec: The Watershed,

Bristol, 0117 927 5100 www.watershed.co.uk Dir: Paul King, starring Edward Hogg, Julian Barratt, Noel Fielding and Simon Farnaby 2009/UK/101 mins This highly anticipated first feature by Mighty Boosh director Paul King is a playground for the eyes, wrought with a visual and narrative inventiveness – including extraordinary animation of different styles – reminiscent of Michel Gondry and early Terry Gilliam. Stephen Turnbull (Edward Hogg) hasn’t left the house in months. He has no need to interact with the world or think about anything in particular. But one day an infestation of mice wreaks havoc on his schedule, unleashing a chaos that rattles his mental cage and sends him hurtling through the past. This means reliving the disastrous European trek upon which he had embarked the previous year with his best friend, the freewheeling, raucous Bunny (Simon Farnaby). Weird, wonderful and like a visual hit of tequila that pops the blood vessels in the retina – a must see. Coraline (PG)

Centre, 01278 422700 www.bridgwaterarts centre.co.uk Dir: Henry Selick, starring Dakota Fanning and Keith David 2009/US/96 mins

www.247magazine.co.uk

Words: John Barker

Directed by Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas), Coraline is a terrifyingly beautiful stop-motion animation with a deliciously dark edge - a children’s movie by only the narrowest of margins! A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better. But when this wondrously off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents (including Other Mother) try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home - and save her family. The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus (12A) 16 Dec: Riverfront, Newport, 01633 656 757 www.newport.gov.uk Director: Terry Gilliam, starring Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, and Christopher Plummer 2009/USA/123 mins Visionary director Terry Gilliam’s fantastical morality tale tells of the charismatic Dr Parnassus (Plummer) and his travelling magic show. Parnassus has a dark secret: he traded his soul with the devil (Tom Waits) for endless youth on condition that he surrenders his firstborn on her sixteenth birthday. Now he must fight to keep his daughter (Cole) assisted by her suitor (Ledger). When Heath

films Ledger died half way through the shoot the creator of Brazil and The Fisher King drafted in Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell to complete the film. What emerges is a creative triumph as characters pass through a magical looking glass into an alternative reality where souls are saved or condemned in one man’s imagination.

7 – 8 Dec: Riverfront,

Newport, 01633 656757 www.newport.gov.uk Dir: Jean Francois Richet, starring Vincent Cassel, Cecile de France, Gerard Depardieu 2009/France/113 mins The charismatic Vincent Cassel sears the screen in the story of France’s most notorious criminal, a bank robbing prison-breaking bandit who ran the cops ragged. Expertly handled this is the first half of a double bill that is executed with an explosive flair and brutal realism. The action is thrilling and relentless, the pacing breakneck, making for a classic French gangster film that stands comparison with The Godfather, Goodfellas and Le Samurai.

The Vampire’s Assistant (12A)

5 – 6 Dec: Curzon

Community Cinema, Clevedon, 01275 871000 www.curzon.org.uk Dir: Paul Weitz, starring John C. Reilly, Josh Hutcherson, and Jessica Carlson. 2009/ US/ 108 mins Based on the books by Darren Shan. 16-year-old Darren stumbles upon the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures, and falls under the influence of a vampire. As Darren flexes his new powers, he becomes a pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their war from devouring what’s left of his humanity. Kiddie friendly bloodsucking antics that should enchant children in the audience and entertain adults all the same.

1 – 3 Dec: The Watershed,

LIVE Bristol, 0117 927 5100 www.watershed.co.uk Dir: Michael Haneke, starring Ulrich Tukur and Burghart Klaußner 2009/Germany/Austria/France/ Italy/144 mins This latest offering from Austrian auteur Haneke (Funny Games, Hidden) picked up the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year. Set in a small farming village in northern Germany on the eve of the First World War, and shot in sparkling black and white, it’s a film of shimmering surfaces that conceal a much darker reality. Partly a portrait of a time in history and partly a study of how sickness in the home can lead to decay in society, it’s also a mystery that, in usual Haneke fashion, he leaves us to unravel. Both provocative and elegant, this is essential viewing – a brilliant and ruthless examination of a society that admits to nothing and hides everything.

CLUB

Dir: James Cameron, starring: Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriquez The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, which is also home to the Navi, a race that are more physically capable than humans, although considered primitive. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora’s forests in search of valuable minerals, the Navi defend their threatened territory. Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this invasion. The effects look out of this world and director James Cameron has a reputation for pioneering the latest technological developments in cinema and this time he’s turned his hand to 3D. Should be nothing short of groundbreaking.

Devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love Edward Cullen, Bella Swan’s spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested. The second entry into the Twilight franchise has a beefed up cast including Michael Sheen and another pretty boy for the teen fan-base to swoon over. Hopefully it will have a bit more bite than its predecessor.

To celebrate the release of Avatar, we are giving away a fantastic bundle of Avatar prizes. We’ve got goodies including shot glasses, a glow t-shirt, a messenger bag and lots more. It might have been Halloween, but we couldn’t resist getting on our raving gear and heading out on our annual trip to Westfest – the biggest dance event of the year round these parts. With a sell out of 10,000 people, it was rammed and wicked sets from Gammer, Friction, Darren Styles and Mark EG amongst others. Top night, wicked atmosphere, bring on NYE at the NEC, Birmingham!
