After doing a Fine Art degree at UWE in Bristol, Hannah Megee took on a Masters in Illustration at Falmouth, graduating in September 2010. She was lucky enough to land a children’s book commission three weeks after graduating - The Sea Swallow by Gareth Thompson. “Since then I have been doing all sorts of illustrations as well as running a few workshops. And I’m just finishing off some designs for a 4m square paving slab that will be etched into granite on a promenade near Blackpool,” says Hannah, who lives in Kingswear, Devon. Looking to the future, Hannah tells us there is a graphic novel forming slowly and she’s also setting up a poster company, called Panopticum, with her boyfriend, Luke, who’s a screen printer. Millenium Complex to re-open this summer Road racing on the Hoe The Shred Classic Bicycle Race returns to Plymouth Hoe for another evening of fast paced road cycling action on Sun 13 May. This isn’t your normal bike race; the short circuit, tight bends and risk of elimination make action the top priority. It’s exciting to watch and even more exciting to ride. This year the Shred Classic follows on from a whole day of cycling as the Sky Ride mass participation ride visits the city. Racing starts from 4pm, with the final around 7.30pm. 247 will be there in full effect with Aldo Vanucci providing the soundtrack for the racing. More info at www.shred.cc/shredmag

The former Millennium Complex on Union St has been taken on by new owners who are planning to reopen it for the summer. The new owners are investing over one million pounds and have grand plans for the venue, with the main aspect to help rejuvenate Union Street by using the building to kick start the heart beat of the local area, hopefully enticing additional developers to look upon Union Street as a prosperous area. Once reopened, the building will be a multi purpose venue, and not just a nightclub, plans include having a bistro/cafe open to the local community during the day. The new venue will also see previously unused space being redeveloped into industrial units for the local community or local charities to use and overall, the new venture will create up to 100 jobs within Plymouth area.

Interview: Laura Williams

Graham Coxon

As he prepares to rejoin his former bandmates in Blur for an epic gig in front of tens of thousands of people at the official Olympics Closing Celebration Ceremony in Hyde Park, Graham Coxon keeps it real with a solo UK tour – which ends with gigs at Exeter Phoenix and Falmouth’s Princess Pavilions. Coxon is championing a big competition for his forthcoming tour - to find local support acts in the towns he’s playing. Bands have been submitting their videos to his site and people have been voting, with Graham getting the final say ahead of the gig. “I suppose it’s a competition of sorts,” he said. “It’s good having something different every night and also, if they’re local, they can bring their mates along and have some decent support as touring support slots can get a cold reception.” He said he’d try and watch the support bands but told us he didn’t really listen to much new music, unless someone tipped him off. He said: “I don’t search endlessly for it as I don’t really know what to look for. Like I don’t know what’s a good fish to eat unless someone tells me that’s a good fish to eat.” Interesting metaphor. He’s full of them today. When asked about the varied sounds on his back catalogue of eight albums, he said: “I do listen to a lot of different types of music, which collate at various times in my life. My albums all come from similar influences, but different elements of the influences. I seem to go round in circles and things pick up like a snowball but it’s just a different snowman at the end of it.” OK. The bespectacled 40-something reckons that his forthcoming album, A+E (which Backbone has reviewed on this month’s music pages), harks back to his 2000 solo album, The Golden D, a bit. He said: “I was quite structured with my last one, I wanted it to be jazzy, swingy and folklike, with a lot of different instruments but I was writing a lot on the bass for this one – which makes it a lot more basic. Women love the bass.” Talking of women, Coxon is touring with a band he has been playing with for a while (not Blur) and one which includes a couple of female multi-instrumentalists and backing vocalists. “We’re more like librarians

than rockstars,” he said, with his tongue firmly in his cheek. “All stripes and glasses.”

“I was quite structured with my last one, I wanted it to be jazzy, swingy and folk-like, with a lot of different instruments but I was writing a lot on the bass for this one – which makes it a lot more basic. Women love the bass.” Asked whether he’s been to A+E, he recalled an incident when he was on tour with Seymour (an early incarnation of Blur). He said: “We all got sprayed in the face by mace. It’s really nasty stuff. Other than that, I’ve not really been to A&E.” Quite why they got sprayed in the face with mace, I guess we’ll never know. He added: “It’s not from personal experience but I wanted to create that neurotic/paranoid/heightened sense of anxiety of being in A+E.” He goes on to talk about abusing technology for the album artwork – saying: “For ages I was working on the idea of artwork for a 12 inch – but it doesn’t really work when cut down to CD size or being looked at on an iPhone, so I ended up taking a nasty image on an old Nokia phone (I’ve got an iPhone too).” And then there’s the video for the single ‘What’ll It Take’, which involves a collection of footage of fans doing prescripted dance moves. Coxon said: “I hope there’s not enough room for people to do that at the gigs.”

See Graham live at Exeter Phoenix on April 29 and Falmouth Princess Pavilions on April 30.

Patrick James Pearson Band

Interview: Arash Torabi

They’ve rocked Glastonbury Festival, been on a UK tour with Hard-Fi and played a triumphant show at the world famous Shepherd’s Bush Empire. They’re The Patrick James Pearson Band Plymouth based and about to play in Totnes - a must-see gig from The Black Bird Collective. They rock out as a trio, with keyboards, drums and bass guitar - not a 6-string guitar in sight. As Patrick put it: “I’m influenced by American bands and labels such as Sub Pop, the ethics and attitudes of punk, and I also like the refinement of pop.” BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson has said about them: “Astonishing…. real grit and power, more power than most guitar bands”. After a knockout performance at Glastonbury 2011, Patrick James Pearson Band were the most shared artist on the BBC Glastonbury website home page for a good 36 hours - beating off competition from Ed Sheeran and Wu Tang Clan! Not bad for a band who are still releasing their own music. As for recorded output, the story so far: “We recorded an album’s worth of material and divided it up into EPs” Patrick says. “The first one was Prey, followed by American Lover. Then came the 5-track EP, Reasons For Moving On. They’re online releases and were also available on hard copy, but all of those are now sold out. And they were all recorded in the bedroom.” More recently than that, the band has just recorded another 5-track EP, with Pete Miles, who has worked with The King Blues and Crazy Arm. “We’re really excited about that. We met Pete through playing with Crazy Arm. He’s got a studio just outside of Exeter, which is only a year old. He said he’d really like to record our next single: I’m A Racer. This has got a much more professional sound, and I’ve just seen the final edit of the video, filmed by Rich Gorman, who also did our last video.” So how did the Hard-Fi tour support come about? “It came through my manager, who also used to manage (Hard-Fi singer) Richard Archer, when he was solo. So Richard came to see us when we played in London, and when we asked him if he’d have us as a support band, he said he would be happy to.” So with connections like these, is there a chance Patrick and his band will get to release music that’s available to a broader audience? “That’s the plan. We’re lucky enough to have a team

magazine

that’s built up around us, with a manager who’s pulled in favours to try and help us. He’s been involved in the scene for a long time (he also used to manage The Bluetones) Now that we’ve had a successful year, and with new material coming out, we’re pushing for some more press. I like the steps involved, and I like the challenge.”

After a knock-out performance at Glastonbury 2011, Patrick James Pearson Band were the most shared artist on the BBC Glastonbury website home page for a good 36 hours - beating off competition from Ed Sheeran and Wu Tang Clan! Not bad for a band who are still releasing their own music. And Glastonbury: how did you get that? “Someone from BBC Devon, whose name escapes me, handed our single to people at the BBC in London, who choose the music for the Introducing stage at Glastonbury. When they rang, I didn’t answer the phone, because it was a private number and I’m not very good with these things! But then they left a message asking us if we wanted to play! Tom Robinson introduced us, and we were the most shared artists. We were just super excited about the whole thing….I always used to say I’d never pay to go to Glastonbury, and would only go if we played, so to see it happen was a dream.”

Patrick James Pearson Band play The Studio Lounge in Totnes on Friday April 27th. For advance tickets: 01803 862267 or www. studioloungetotnes.com and www.wegottickets.com. For more on the band see www.patrickjamespearson.co.uk

Fred V & Grafix Signed to the institution that is Hospital Records earlier this year, Devon drum & bass duo, Fred V & Grafix have got the recognition most producers dream of. Aldo Vanucci caught up with Grafix… How on earth did two South West producers get signed to one of the best record labels on the planet. Dammit. Who knows! It was always a great ambition of ours, then it finally just happened. It’s nice to be able to wave the flag for the South West I may have a drum & bass version of a well-known house tune that you may or may not have made, depending on whether any lawyers read this. What’s your take on drum & bass bootlegs and how would you feel if someone jacked one of your tunes? There’s some great bootlegs out there. We would feel quite flattered if someone did one of ours, hasn’t happened yet though as far as we know. So when the two of you DJ together do you play one tune each or does one of you do all the DJing while the other is busy taking groupies phone numbers? We usually do 2 or 3 tunes each. To be honest, Fred is usually the one that deals with groupies, no one recognises me - I just end up being asked to take photos of fans with Fred. Is there an album being worked on and what should we expect from it? Slowly but surely that is what we’re working towards, however there’s a few other surprises to expect before that. In all the best double acts there is always a straight man, which one is which? It changes from time to time! However, Fred tends to consistently be the more sensible one. I was dead chuffed when I saw you’d remixes Emili Sande, getting some major label heat is always good look. Who would you like to remix and who would you politely turn down? Yeah that’s been our favourite remix so far. We’d really like to put our spin on a Maverick Sabre track, and maybe Rebecca Ferguson. There’s definitely a few we would politely turn down, but we think the top spot goes to Justin Bieber.

www.247magazine.co.uk

Apart from Hospital name your three favourite record labels? Ninja Tune, Ed Banger, Screwloose. Which ice cream flavour would you be and which topping would you add to make yourself look even more tantalising? We would be an infusion of Fromage frais, vinegar and gravy. Topped with a shaving of parmesan, served at room temperature. Is that tantalising enough? What’s your favourite drum & bass tune, ever? High Contrast & Calibre - Mr Majestic and Josh’s is Brookes Brothers – Daybreak. As a label Hospital has always favoured vinyl, when you DJ what’s your format of choice? We learned to DJ on records, but now use CDs. We’ve never been physically strong enough to carry around a box of vinyl. If we put your iPod on random what’s the cheesiest guilty pleasure that may pop up? Elton John - Your Song. I’ve always wanted to sing it to a pretty lady. Josh has albums from The Temper Trap and Ben Folds, and says he should feel pretty guilty about that. When you do your us tour for three years solid, what will be the tour DVD you watch constantly? Eastbound & Down. What’s the weirdest request you’ve ever been asked for – musically? Once there was a girl stood in front of the decks who was shouting at us for 20 minutes trying to get us to play David Guetta - Sexy Bitch. Fun gig that was... What would your superhero power be and what would be your first deed with it? We would love to be able to teleport to every destination we have to travel to. The travelling is definitely the most boring part of the job. Although you do meet some interesting people on the way, shouts to the Yo Sushi guy we always see at Paddington Station in London!

INTRODUCING

HAYDEN WRIGHT

The South West’s very own up and coming rap star, Hayden Wright, 19, talks rhyming, dealing with grief, and his future with 247’s Amy Berry. At what age did you have an interest in rapping? I guess it began from the age of eight. My mother passed away when I was six and I didn’t really understand what was happening, I didn’t know she wasn’t coming back. I didn’t know what to do and rap music became my friend. I didn’t know myself and it became my identity and my solace. When did you start rapping yourself? When I was about nine or ten I guess. I loved stories as a kid and I started by rhyming them. Rhyming was a way of letting out my pent up emotion. When I was in class I used to turn my desk the other way and sit facing the wall and bury my nose in my pad - writing was my safety blanket. Who inspires you? When I was younger I used to listen to a lot of American Hip Hop. My big influences were the likes of Tupac, Obie Trice, Xzibit, Dr.Dre, as well as Dizzee Rascal and The Streets they’ve all done really great things for music. You’ve been labelled as ‘the next Eminem’ by some, how do you feel about this? It’s annoying to be labelled. But then again it is to Eminem, it’s incredible to be compared to him, he’s the best rapper on the planet. I’m not walking around with one trouser leg rolled up, that’s what he does, and I respect him for that, but I’m my own person, I don’t try to be him, I write my own individual raps and it just happens to be that when I rap, I sound like him. We see you came second in the Borough’s United competition, how did that come about and how did it feel? I began posting music online, everywhere I could. I came across a Facebook account called Artist Management and posted a video on there of myself. It all happened really quickly after that, three hours later I got a response and was asked to go to the O2 to compete in a competition. I originally didn’t think much of it other than a good experience to meet people. I came second, and I was over the moon. The crowds’ response was unreal! It’s a bigger rap scene there and no one talked about my Devon accent once, it was all about the music.

10 |

magazine

How have you gone about getting your name known? I started by videoing myself on my mobile, and from there set up my own YouTube account. I spend day and night just posting my music everywhere to promote myself. From there I’ve been given many opportunities to perform all over Plymouth, in a lot of venues and nightclubs. I’ve also been to Essex and competed in Essex Factor, which I got into the grand final. And I’ve even been contacted by people in America. I’m now under the management of Blaxtalion A&R. I do a lot of self promotion by handing out CD’s. My most recent video is by RapCity where I do a freestyle rap and within a few hours I had 3,000 views! How do you feel about the current rap scene in the South West? It’s doing positive things. Everyone should just keep doing what they’re doing but with a smile on their faces. And in the UK in general? It’s much more commercialised these days with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Labrinth and Professor Green. It used to be a lot more underground but rap is being heard far more frequently these days. What are your plans for April? Where can we see you? I have no gigs lined up as yet, but they’re normally pretty last minute, so watch this space! I have a lot planned for this year - I have already written half an album and got a big rap battle set up, but I can’t tell you who against or when! I have just had my music played live on the radio for the first time on LA Talk Live which was exciting. Where would you like to be in five years time? I think its any rappers dream to top the charts. But that’s not my ambition. I just want to give back to my Dad everything that he has given to me. He has worked day in and day out to look after me and my little brother, and we have been through a lot, so the dream is to give it all back. I also want to be in America, as much as I love the UK, I think it’s something all rappers want to do. What would you say to aspiring rappers in the South West? It’s simple, keep making music and lyrical content. And most of all, keep smiling.

Food

We ♥ carbs! It’s all about the pizza and pasta this month…

If Falmouth were a city, Arwenack Street would be called ‘The Restaurant Quarter’. It would also be bustling with people. On this night we were the only customers in the restaurant, which is always a little unnerving. We shared antipasto to start, a mixed selection of Italian sliced meats, and also garlic pizza bread. The antipasto was nice, but the portion was small. The garlic pizza bread was wonderfully light and wasn’t coated in obscene amounts of olive oil, which is far too common-place. There was a delicious home made chilli-infused olive oil on the table instead. For the main, I opted for the Penne al Chef: penne pasta with mushrooms, bacon, cream and a dash of tomato. My guest chose Pizza Diavola: a spicy twelve-inch, with pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers and chilli. The pasta sauce had the perfect balance between cream and tomato, and the bacon and mushroom had been cooked for just the right amount of time. The Pizza Diavola was spicy, as promised, the cheese was wonderfully elastic and the base was divinely thin and airy. The menu has plenty to choose from, yet still remains quite classic. Sadly our meal did feel slightly rushed, and our dining experience was somewhat lacking in atmosphere. But I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and authenticity of the food, which was on the whole very reasonably priced. Pizza is also available for takeaway. Hannah Giles

As its name suggests, Exeter Picturehouse is a cinema, but as well as quality movies, it also offers a lot more. The Picturehouse has two screens, a plush and spacious bar, live music on Thursdays and a groovy menu offering locally sourced food and pretty damn fine pizzas, with a good range of toppings. The pizzas come in a choice of 9” or 12”, with vegetarian options also available. The garlic bread is definitely of a superior quality: fresh and crispy, and it’s made in a flat-bread form, like a pizza. And the food is served on wooden chopping boards, for that contemporary feel. The Hot & Spicy pizza is made with chilli beef, pepperoni and jalapeno. Again, both toppings and base are of an extremely high standard, with freshness being high on the agenda. This is made abundantly clear, after just one bite. And it’s all baked to perfection, with just the right ratio of crunchy to juicy. One of the vegetarian options comes with goat’s cheese and pesto, and the inclusion of the latter is a genius move. They serve decent coffee too, and with a fully licensed bar, friendly staff and relaxed surroundings, it’s easy to see why it’s a great place to go to eat out or have a drink, as well as having the capacity to serve cinema goers. Arash Torabi

If you like your food with a view then you can’t beat the aptly named View 2 on Plymouth’s historic Barbican. I was lucky enough to visit on the first day of spring, when the sun was obediently shinning, so sitting out on the contemporarily styled decking area taking in the breath-taking view of Plymouth’s Barbican was a must. The menu consists of a wide selection of pizzas, pasta, salads, tapas and toasties, with a selection of intros and starters to boot. To start, my guest and I shared butterfly king prawns, fried in a gloriously light crunchy batter served with a little side salad and sweet chilli dip – delicious and moreish. The pizza menu is extensive but after much debate I decided on Piccante – spicy beef, jalapenos, red onion, green pepper and Tabasco. My guest played it safe with Hawaiian featuring expensive Parma ham no less. The pizza bases were thin and light and tasted authentic. In contrast, the bases were loaded with toppings. My pizza wasn’t nearly as spicy as I expected, which was disappointing, but it was tasty never the less. Pizza’s are huge, so you could easily share one between two – they cost between £9.90 and £12.90.The drinks menu is impressive with everything from Espresso to wines and even sparkles and champagne! Good food, stunning view and they even have live music nights. Check out www.view2barbican.co.uk Rachael D’Cruze

Music Backbone

Arash Torabi

Apologies, I Have None

Et Tu Bruce

(self-release)

(Worldwide Records)

London

It’s a rarity to find a band in this country who put their emotional fragility on the viewing table for all to see, who perform biopsies on relationships and experiences to leave the listener feeling quietly shell-shocked. London quartet, Apologies, I Have None, are one such band. Coupled with this disarming honesty is a knack for dynamic songwriting that manages to sound, at once, like the stuff of kitchen sink drama and the stuff of anthems; especially ‘Holloway Or Anywhere’. Some may baulk at AIHN’s newly developed sense of ambition but, when the results are this visceral and unapologetically epic, it’s well worth the risk.

Hawk Eyes Ideas

(Fierce Panda) New name, new game. With the Chickenhawk moniker behind them, Hawk Eyes have reinvented themselves with a fresh and furious take on modern post-hardcore. The most notable change is in the vocal department, with Paul Astick ditching a lot of the shoutiness (under doctor’s orders, no less) for a smooth, if laboured, Mike Patton-esque croon. Sometimes it works a treat thanks to some off-the-chart musical conceits (‘Hollywood Sweatshop’, ‘Kiss This’) but there is a sneaking sense of over-egging the pudding. You have to salute the band’s passionate adherence to creating a herky-jerky rock album of boundless, dark energy whilst thinking outside the box. One just hopes that they can locate more substance once the novelty has worn off.

The Skints Part & Parcel

Suburban Sunshine Despite the awful name, London’s Et Tu Bruce are wonderful. Why? OK, I’ll tell you. True honesty, real charm and a genuine love for the art of songwriting colour the ten cuts here. It’s obvious to name-check the likes of The Byrds, The Kinks or any number of 60s masters of harmony, but the important thing is that this lot are not trying to be anything: they’re already where they want to be. Again, good old honest songwriting is the key, best demonstrated with the heartbreakingly joyous Turning of the Screw, on which the singer sounds a little like Tim Buckley. Just the name that’s the problem then. How about “the” with something after it? Just an idea, like.

Dawn Chorus Ignites Take Me With You (Prima Rosa)

Instrumental guitar-based music that calms one minute, and sounds ferocious the next: that’s Dawn Chorus Ignites, and Take Me With You is their third album. They wear their post-rock and shoegaze influences on their sleeves, and although I’m not one for putting things in boxes, it’s fair to say that if you’d never heard them before, these descriptions would point you in the right direction. The five selections here are cleverly constructed and definitely progressive, with a lot of thought given to space and arrangements. Who needs a singer? Not Dawn Chorus Ignites, that’s for sure. A sonic slab of brilliance, with power and ambience in equal measures.

Phantogram Nightlife

(Barsuk Records)

(Bomber)

Hailing from New York, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, as Phantogram offer a more creative twist Acting like you come from a different country on the well tried and tested electro rock format. to gain kudos is nothing new in rock’n’roll. The American rappers born in Hackney, the Britpunks They don’t just regurgitate a pastiche of the ‘80s, schooled on the streets of ‘Frisco, the hobocore like so many others. That‘s the easy way out (or hicks from Devonshire… So the fact that London in). Hell no. Instead of all that, their sound dips into elements of psychedelic pop, with dreamy reggae quartet, The Skints, sound like they’ve been holed up in Studio One devouring Jamaican vocals, strong songwriting and quirky rhythms to patties and patois all their lives is no biggie. With boot. And the electronic thing isn’t in your face in every song, giving this mini album/EP room to three strong voices, headed up by the amazing breathe. Check out the opener 16 Years or the Marcia Richards, and delicious musicianship, title track as a taster. A breath of fresh air. the likes of ‘Rat-A-Tat’, ‘Ring Ring’ and the rocksteady groove of ‘Lay You Down’ are beautifully Kill Krinkle Club honed vignettes that recall the heyday of Toots & Abandon The Maytals, bolstered by a politico-punk resolve. (Toy Ship Records) All hail the new pretenders.

Graham Coxon A+E

(Parlophone) I watched that recent Blur documentary and was left with the feeling that Graham Coxon was a little bit, well, mentally compromised. I guess it was all part of the idiot-savant-introvert act. And maybe ‘A+E’’s opener, ‘Advice’, is also part of the injoke, sounding, as it does, like a gaudy caricature of Britpop Blur. What follows on Coxon’s eighth solo disc is, thankfully, far more interesting. ‘City Hall’ is lo-fi motorik done to good New York effect, ‘What It’ll Take’ is unadulterated ‘80s post-punk whimsy, while ‘The Truth’ is an eerie dirge that couldn’t sound any further from 09’s folk(s)y ‘The Spinning Top’ if it was neck-deep in Wire 45s. Adventurous and unpredictable. Business as usual, then.

magazine

They met in a Dublin bar, and they describe their music as “child Japanese electro pop with Russian influences.” Yet another twist on the electronic thing, but this lot are more experimental and progressive with it, with stop-start rhythms that use very old-fashioned synth sounds. There will be some boffins out there who will wet their pants over these sounds, and tell you where they came from. KKC are clearly not aiming for instant access, therefore some of these tracks need to be approached with extreme chin-stroking skills. The opener, Butterfly is the closest thing to a pleasant listen. Kind of like early Genesis having a fight with a pre-Dare Human League.

Laura Malarkey

The Civil Wars Barton Hollow

(Sensibility/Sony) Being a big fan of boy/girl vocals, The Civil Wars were top of the pile of this month’s reviews. And from opening track ‘Years’, with it’s crystal clear guitars, the swooning sweet Emmylou Harris-style voice of Joy Williams combines with the deep, dashing Glen Hansard-ish drole of John Paul White to create some of the most beautifully stark Americana. And like Glen Hansard’s and Marketa Irglova’s unlikely Irish/Czech pairing in The Swell Season, here we have the US version - a California/ Nashville mix. You can picture the Grammy Awardwinning duo on stage with nothing but their cache of bear but brilliant duets while the audience gently weeps. Earnest, romantic and brilliant.

Bruce Springsteen Wrecking Ball (Columbia)

The Boss is back to save us all. Thank fuck for that. We were given a sneak preview of the opening song of this album – ‘We Take Care Of Our Own’ – on Youtube last month, but if you thought you knew what you were in for with that, you’d be wrong. That one’s a catchy, but somewhat radio-friendly definitively American number, while the rest of the bag is more of a lucky dip full of crackers. And by crackers, I mean cracking goddamn tunes. From the title track, ‘Wrecking Ball’, to the gospeltinged earworm ‘Rocky Ground’, which comes complete with half-arsed rapping, like in REM’s The Outsiders. But it’s strangely appealing. Like Johnny Cash, this musical ledge knows how to make his music mature with him. Take note, Madonna.

Ellen and the Escapades All The Crooked Scenes (Branch Out Records)

We’ve been big fans of Ellen and the Escapades here at 247 Magazine for a year or so now and this debut album has been a long time coming...but it was totally worth the wait. A compelling selection of uplifting, angel-voiced folk ballads. Soaring mini-masterpieces, which draw upon obvious Communion influences of Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling with sniffs of First Aid Kit and Townes Van Zandt. Ellen’s vocals are a dream, with a dusky loveliness akin to Norah Jones and the tuneful clarity of Beth Orton, topped off with a heartfelt Dolly Parton burr in places. With a good mix of songs, from slow heartbreaking numbers like ‘Run’ to more upbeat songs like ‘Preying on Your Mind’ – these guys are great value for money.

Feeder

Generation Freakshow (Big Teeth Music)

Feeder have been pretty hit and miss over the years. Their early stuff sat comfortably on the racks next to the likes of the Manics, Muse and even Green Day but they’ve strayed off to the path since then into utter mediocrity, sharing festival stages with a bunch of other 90s has-beens, like Dodgy and The Bluetones (sorry guys). But this here album isn’t bad at all. It’s got a much more US sound to it, like Remy Zero or The Killers and you can imagine it featuring on a number of popular teen shows, from Skins to the OC and some. Though you can defo hear a slight post-Britpop air to it, which makes it sound quite dated. Can’t imagine people getting over excited about this these days. Though they’d make fine Reading Festival fodder. www.247magazine.co.uk

Maxx - Polymeric 7

(Fontana International)

(Polymeric)

Bottoms Up

There aren’t many names in the game who have the backing of both Eminem and Dr Dre, which does make me wonder why so far Obie hasn’t blown. His first album was mmmmh, I wasn’t massively into the singles but it did have one killer track “don’t come down” which was on repeat for the most time. Most of this album is similar to the first, decent enough flow and good productions but no stone cold classics. It does start to win you over with a few more listens, the question is though in today’s culture does anyone invest the time in albums that don’t instantly appeal. If you liked the last obie album then give this one some time to grow on you.

Chiddy Bang Breakfast

(Regal Records) When Chiddy Bang came out with Opposite of Adults (their mgmt sampling debut) I was kind of hyped for the album, then they went dark for a while. When their first single from this Ray Charles was released I was unsure. It’s grown on me now and with a funny as hell video I’m sure it’s grown on many. Not sure where these guys sit in the world of hip hop but they know their way around a good hook and the flow isn’t so addictive but isn’t going to harm anyone either. Decent enough productions and a good choice of samples. If you were a coffee lover this would be a skinny latte, and all that that implies. Saying that though, I love hip hop and this does grown on me more with every listen. Maybe they are playing the long slow game, and winning.

Belleruche

One thing I admire about London’s Polymeric imprint is despite releasing only a handful of records, the quality is usually unrivalled, and as a result the past six vinyl they have released have stayed in my record box for far longer than your average Techno release should! On release seven, label owner Maxx treats us with two funky, driving cuts, with the amusingly titled ‘Piece Off’ being the better of the two. However, it’s the collaboration between Welsh duo ‘Zoid and A.P’ that steals the show on this release, with a rather meticulous slice of percussive funk called ‘Truffle Shuffle’ (you just couldn’t write it eh?!) that is perfect for early on.

Noizy Boy + Clyderman You Complete Me (GT Hardtrance)

Long-standing record shop German Trance have recently decided to enter the digital age and branch out with four labels that really pioneer the sound that they have become famed for. This South West four tracker (from Torquay’s Noizy Boy + Clyderman) is set to impress and definitely shows sign of potential. Managing to emulate the European kick and bass line nicely, ‘XTC Warning’ is this reviewer’s particular favourite out of the tracks on offer, but whilst this is good, what might limit the tracks success worldwide are that the riffs sound a hint more UK than they do European and end up very reminiscent of Honeypot records material. That’s not a bad thing mind as I love it!

Evanti When Analogue Dies (Analogue Is Dead)

Roller Chain

You are probably all sick of me mentioning this guy and his label, but you simply must check this. After receiving a copy at a recent Dutch gig, I was Transparency here. I love Belleruche. To death. cursing Evanti for not giving this to me sooner These guys are so on point on each and every so It could have been played that night. Thilo + album. With vocal excellence from Kathrin Evanti both have their own niche of Techno and deBoer and beats by DJ Modest this album isn’t Hard Trance, which is difficult to characterise in a massive departure from previous styles but any way except that it’s ‘their sound’. Distorted there does seem to be a growing strength to their drums, a sub orientated bass, and a kick that is sound, a confidence to be subtle where in the so defined it has a very destructive effect when past entire sample loops were used now space played loud are here. Add to this a gorgeous and small essential sounds more than make up melody and it’s no wonder most of Europe’s for it. A massive touring schedule means these leading harder DJs have picked up on this one. guys will be in front of you sooner or later at some festival or another, I would urge you to choose the Tobias Luke former and fall in love with them. Backbone

The Morrisons www.myspace.com/themorrisons You’re based in Torbay and you’re called The Morrisons. Could it sound any more provincial? But these particular Morrisons were imbuing a nation of introspective indie kids with dog-eared lo-fi strums long before the supermarket chain loomed into view. Their new platter, ‘Southern Soul’ (released through Exeter imprint, Pastime Records), revisits their own heady days of C86 popscapery with songs that are so wistful you’re not sure whether to listen to them or buy them some ice cream to cheer them up. With echoes of The Byrds, the likes of ‘Flowers On A Tuesday’ and the bedroom strum of ‘Listen To Your Heart’ capture the essence of what was, or at least seemed, a less complicated era.

Suitenoir

www.facebook.com/suitenoir Suitenoir are three Cornishmen on a mission to seemingly resurrect the crypto-grunge rock snarl that took Biffy Clyro, Placebo and Nirvana to giddy heights of stardom. But do they have the requisite nowness to make a dent? Their album, ‘Nothing Succeeds Like Excess’, certainly suggests that they’re on the right track. ‘Mascara’ has all the pomp of arena rock at it’s most Cult-tastic, while ‘Too Young’ posits a meaty, almost-stoner conceit with a Cobain twist. But it’s the bittersweet new wave of ‘Lover’ that truly tickles this reviewer’s fancy and which marks an unexpected left turn before ‘Co-Dydra’ blazes in on a boisterous punk/hard rock ticket. Innovative, passionate and driven. Tools of the trade, then.

The Love Bullet

(Cardio Pulmonary Records) An MC that I’ve not heard of before, and as hip hop is such a wide prairie nowadays, this guy is looking back at the b boy days with a nod towards the justice league. It’s tough nowadays to get yourself heard, everyone can afford to make an album which is not to say that everyone should, I’d love to release a hip hop album but I wouldn’t even be Plymouth’s 14th best MC. This is a solid album and the guy is out there doing his thing, hosting b boy shows, making contacts and travelling but there is a certain something missing here which makes me think that maybe the next album will be the one people start to sit up and take notice to.

www.247magazine.co.uk

We were treated to a performance by D.A.V.E The Drummer at Voodoo Lounge last month and boy did he smash the place, I’m sure he dropped his remix of Germany’s Tobias Luke then as well as it sounds awfully familiar. Anyway, as we’ve come to expect from Hydraulix (releases of which have been reviewed since the very first issues of this magazine and are still going strong), hypnotic percussion, funky bass lines, distorted vocals and lovely analogue goodness are melted together. Around the three minute mark a twisted synth noise comes out of nowhere to screw with your mind and you can’t help but love it. ‘Hard + Dry’ also included with the EP is worth a check as well.

Paul Garry. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Bob Dylan or Frank Turner, does it? And, unfortunately, the Bristol acoustic crooner-dude doesn’t come up with the aural goods either. His debut album ‘With Love Comes Rescue’, released through BMS Records, leaves less of an impression than a fart in a sandstorm. The songs just aren’t soulful, doleful, angry, bitter, yearning, love-struck, downcast or just plain clever enough to connect with the synapses, unless you’re a fan of Jack Johnson, perhaps. It’s the modern music malaise and it’s spreading like a particularly mild wildfire. Like mildfire. Alert the emergency services! Stop the spread of this mildfire! No water needed, just buckets full of jeers!

Etherical

www.facebook.com/pages/Etherical From Cornwall, Etherical’s recent single, ‘Out Of Control’, plods indistinctly like a Reuben album filler while the vocals fail to find their place in the song. There’s also a ‘metalcore’ breakdown that sounds like it was shoehorned in at the last minute. ‘Opening The Ground’, on the other hand, is a completely different beast. It starts with swirling ambience and looped beats before morphing into an Aphex Twin electronica squelchfest. No guitars, no breakdown, no clichés. Two songs that sound like the work of two different bands, then. If they think they’re pushing the envelope then they’re a few beheaded babies short of a massacre, but at least they’re making the effort. Credit where it’s due. magazine | 41

MUST

SEE

TITANIC 3D (12A)

Released: 5 April 2012 Dir: James Cameron Starring: Leonardo DeCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane 1997/US/194 min The doomed behemoth of the Titanic floats the box office once again. Not content with being the first film ever to gross a billion dollars, James Cameron’s watery disaster will I’m sure earn another few quid for “The King of the World”. The story is basically Romeo and Juliet on an iceberg. Leo is the lovable working class rogue who becomes infatuated with the delightfully elegant upper class Kate. But the real star of the show is the Oscar winning special effects that are brilliantly realised in 3D. Just try and forget about the Celine Dion theme tune and enjoy a three hour rollercoaster.

The Best of the Rest.... THE AVENGERS 3D (TBC)

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (15) to commit espionage against the U.S.

Released: 27 April 2012 Dir: Joss Whedon. Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. 2011/US/TBC Last years glut of comic book adaptations was merely a set up for this mega-budgeted effort. The Avengers combines the skills of The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the less well known Hawkeye and Black Widow. They are facing off against the baddie from Thor - Lokie (Tom Hiddleston). Directed by sci-fi and comic book aficionado, Joss Whedon, the film should keep the hardcore fan base happy while providing plenty of on-screen excitement for the masses. Pack your cape and get ready for some wild entertainment, and look out for Lou Ferrigno (the original Incredible Hulk) providing the voiceover for the green giant.

Released: 13 April 2012 Dir: Drew Goddard. Starring: Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Chris Hemsworth. 2011/US/105 min Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the mystery of this deserted supernatural hut. Expect as many laughs as scares in this 3D haunted house movie.

is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates. Bonkers sci-fi/action/thriller from the mind of Luc Besson (Leon and Taken), which should be given some gravitas by Guy Pearce in the central role. Don’t expect an in-depth treatise on existentialism and you won’t go away disappointed by this silly thrill ride.

JOYFUL NOISE (PG)

Released: 20 April Dir: Kevin Macdonald Starring: Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley and Rita Marley. 2011/US/144 min This documentary explores the life, music, and legacy of Bob Marley. This film comes from Kevin Macdonald who did an excellent job bringing a real figure to life on screen with Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, and he now turns his hand to the life of the great reggae musician. This documentary uses archive footage of interviews with Bob Marley, intercut with interviews with his contemporaries such as Jimmy Cliff and The Wailers. The soundtrack should be fantastic and it will be great to see if this documentary can really get under the skin of one of the great figures of the 20th century.

BATTLESHIP (TBC) Released: 11 April 2012 Dir: Peter Berg. Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson. 2011/US/TBC A fleet of naval ships is forced to do battle with an armada of alien ships in order to discover and thwart their quest for world domination. The film is based on the board game - Ohh! You sunk my Battleship!” I here you cry! – but, rather than military strategy, this film just puts Liam Neeson in charge of a fleet of destroyers and lets him exercise his itchy trigger finger. Could be this year’s Transformers….in a good way!

Released: 27 April 2012 Dir: Todd Graff. Starring: Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton and Keke Palmer 2012/US/118 min Joyful Noise is the story of a small town choir out to win a national competition despite overwhelming odds. G.G. Sparrow (Dolly Parton) faces off with her choir’s newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Queen Latifah), over the group’s direction as they head into a national competition. This should be a musical spectacular with Dolly Parton in fine voice and sparring with Queen Latifah for screen stealing moments.

LOCKOUT (TBC) Released: 20 April Dir: James Mather and Stephen St. Leger Starring: Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace and Peter Stormare 2011/US/TBC A man wrongly convicted of conspiracy

The Palladium Club, 8pm, £tbc Funk & soul covers. Despite what we’re constantly being led to believe by ever-optimistic ensembles full of fresh-faced parvenus, touring is not great fun. You have to conscientiously make it fun or the internal demons of the road will milk your life-force until you’re nothing more than a crooning cadaver with sweaty stinking testicles. With that in mind, the chirpy Crazy Arm entourage set off on a small jaunt with our good friends, APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE and GREAT CYNICS. It’s always nice to have buddies along for the craic. First stop, erm, Plymouth (White Rabbit, 29th Feb), where we were also joined by the developed, delightful country wiles of Indiana, USA starlet, AUSTIN LUCAS. We felt a little rusty after two months of inactivity but Austin’s silky voice and bluegrass virtuosity was enough to galvanise us into band duty action. We also joined the great man onstage for a few songs which, despite the nagging self-indulgence of it all, didn’t detract from the man’s supreme talents. Next stop, Bristol (Croft, 1st March). Here, alongside Austin once again – who was nothing short of triumphant – we had the interesting addition of Cardiff quintet, THREE PAIRS OF SHOES, who seemed very grateful for an audience that didn’t idly chatter through their softly delivered harmonies and chamber folk meanderings. With a bit more onstage confidence their unassuming, quintessentially English airs could attract a lot more converts to the cause. Over in Brighton, FIGHTING FICTION joined in the fray to celebrate the release of their debut album (Hydrant, 2nd March). They may not quite reach the bar that their proto-punk predecessors have set but theirs is a sound that resonates with selfbelief. Our first legitimate show in Leicester went off without a hitch, apart from a severe bout of toothache and local punks, VICTORY GIN, looking and sounding like they didn’t really have a clue (Firebug, 3rd March). And Kingston was fantastic despite us having to get ferried into town and back from two miles away because our van is too old for the newly introduced Low Emissions Zone (Fighting Cocks, 4th March). Apologies’ were on top form tonight, treating the capacity crowd to an exercise in seamless, confessional rock. Last stop, Norwich, where it either rains or shines (Karma Kafe, 5th March). It rained. Boston pop-punks, DAN WEBB & THE SPIDERS, opened the show with a clutch of succinct and choppy vignettes. Meanwhile, Great Cynics had a few of us standing in on the four-stringer as their own bassist, Iona Cairnes, couldn’t make the show. As ever, the Norwich faithful were on hand to make it a memorable and chaotic sendoff for us. Night drives are ace. My second favourite part of touring, as long as I’m not falling into a soporific trance at the wheel, which does tend to happen. We listened to Torche and Theatre Of Hate and talked about ‘80s post-punk and how ‘Let The Right One In’ was one of my, and, it transpired, Mark Kermode’s favourite films. Seven hours later, with the sun fully risen behind us, we’re back home in Plymouth, necks intact. A few days later, laudable garage punks, DAMERELS, are squeezing their tower block of amps and attitude into the tiny environs of the Odd Bar (Plymouth, 9th March). They sounded fucking immense, despite playing in what was, ostensibly, the thoroughfare to the toilets. Up close and personal, the trio’s ice-cool riffola, belligerent drumming and Stooges-esque yelping took on a life of its own. DEAD POETS kept up the momentum with a controlled explosion of fluid hooks and hardcore vigour. I’m not sure if these micro-shows will catch on but the intimacy it affords is certainly something I can get on board with. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
