Occupy protests grow
‘Anti-greed’ protesters continue to protest this month against inequality, corporate greed and to call for tighter financial guidelines and action over the gap between the rich and poor. Protests are being held across the world and the South West is holding its own. Plymouth protestors, who are camping on Jigsaw Garden, in the city centre, are willing to stay beyond Christmas to highlight the nation’s growing dissatisfaction with the financial situation. Nearly 20 tents have now been pitched and they are 25 protestors staying full time, with a further 15 camping between family and work commitments. The activists range from the homeless and unemployed to solicitors and businessmen. They are not there to cause trouble, as they have daily visits from the police and a self-enforced ban on drugs and daytime drinking. They have even set aside money to re-seed the area after they leave, as the intent isn’t to disrupt the area, just the corporations. For more info or to get involved go to http:// occupyplymouth.org/ Meanwhile, in Exeter, supporters have set up camp on Exeter Cathedral Green and the church have even gone as far as to invite them to stay in the grounds, saying that they believe that it is a human right for people to peacefully protest.

Seth Lakemam
Seth Lakeman’s trademark blend of traditional folk, pop and rock has propelled his name far beyond his native Devon. With a top ten album and a Mercury Prize nomination under his belt, he is now free from the restraints of a major record deal and able to create music his own way. He chats to 247’s Arash Torabi about his new album, Tales From The Barrel House and his tour. Seth Lakeman has released six albums in under ten years, which is quite remarkable in the current music climate. He explains that living on Dartmoor, which suits his style of working, allows him to kep it real. “My motivation has always been having music as my hobby”, says Seth. “I enjoy songwriting, so I haven’t been doing this for money. And living on Dartmoor has kept my sound away from the things that could have diluted it.” As well as writing the entire album himself, Seth also played every instrument on the record - the only outside input being from a studio engineer. And for that extra unconventional touch, he recorded it in a barrelhouse in Devon’s heritage centre; Morwellham Quay. “I guess it’s a reaction to leaving a major record label and regaining control - not that I’m a control freak! I wanted to find a space to record, which suited the subject matter of the songs: the old artisan and the craftsman. Morwellham drew more out of the songs, unlike a conventional studio which can be very sterile.”
“The Barrel House is all about the narrative, and how you can explore songs. It’s also about the people in the past and how they took such pride in what they were doing. It’s very lyric-led, with these quirky sounds that draw you in, and the one ambient microphone to really bring it to life.” 6|

So what are the pros and cons of recording an album in a well-preserved 19th century mining port? “There were challenges, because I recorded it in two weeks during June, when it was open to the public. But the instruments connected to the space in such a lively way. The room was almost the star, it played its own part. We only used one surround-sound microphone to record it, and it was interesting to see how the songs developed. As we pieced it together, we started using the tools around us.” By “tools”, Seth means it literally: the album features the clanging of ironmongers’ tools, used as percussion. “It wasn’t planned at all - at first I just thought the place would suit the songs, but then I started to use everything! There’s a
tool-sharpener, which I used as a shaker, and an axe which is like a snare - there’s allsorts. It’s quite cool actually, because there’s a certain element of freedom that comes with that. You wouldn’t normally do that on a record,” says Seth. While we agree, it certainly works with Seth’s new album - when they songs have storytelling quality, it makes sense. “The Barrel House is all about the narrative, and how you can explore songs. It’s also about the people in the past and how they took such pride in what they were doing. It’s very lyricled, with these quirky sounds that draw you in, and the one ambient microphone to really bring it to life” Artists through the ages have spoken about the benefits of recording on independent labels, and the maintaining of artistic integrity. Seth Lakeman’s new album is on his own new label, Honour Oak Records, and only available from his website. “I think the last record I did was misread and misinterpreted, in terms of what I was trying to achieve as an artist. I enjoyed making it, but it wasn’t wholesome - not like the new album. I think that was part and parcel of working with a corporate company: you have to make all sorts of sacrifices. But now I’m free to steer my own boat, and I’m not worried about the pressures of marketing.” On tour, Seth will be joined by a full band, showcasing his new material, as well as playing older songs. “I’m working with some incredible musicians, and we’re going to try and recreate some of the songs from Barrel House on the road. It’ll be a rootsy return to the stage. We’ll take a few of the authentic tools on the road, but we can’t take an anvil on tour! But I will take the barrel that I used on one of the songs, a wheel and also some props for the stage.”
You can catch Seth Lakeman live this month at Exeter Lemon Grove on Monday 12, and Falmouth Princess Pavilion on Sun 18. His brand new album, Tales From the Barrel House is now available exclusively from Seth’s website: www.sethlakeman.co.uk

You’ve had 24 million hits on YouTube, how did that come about? I started putting videos up on YouTube in 2007, and literally from there it grew and grew. I don’t know why or how – I’m just a very lucky girl! At what point did the YouTube recognition turn into something bigger? When did the industry start to notice you? I started putting up YouTube videos around November 2007 and it was summer 2008 when I first met my manager. He emailed me three times – I was only 18, so I didn’t know what was going on! Eventually he came down to Plymouth, I met with him and that was the moment I thought I could really make something of it, so I quit University.

Tell us about the competition 1Click2Fame I won the quarter-final which was a £25,000 deal and then the annual final, which was £100,000. It was a sponsorship deal that came with a lot of complications so my manager and I decided it wasn’t for me. They have helped me with the album release though; I’m still working with them now. Where did you make the album, and who with? I made it in a little place outside Bristol: Thornbury. My manager put me in contact with this guy called Daniel Gowdy, who was producing his pilot, and we worked really well together. It went from there really and we made an album! Did you work with any other artists whilst making your album? I worked with two other guys in L.A, one guy called Ted Bruner who’s written for artists such as Selena Gomez and Katy Perry, some really intimidating acts! Also another guy called Curt Schneider, who’s written with Lissie, they were so cool. Did it take you long to make your track with those guys? We started working in March and we had only around 3-4 weeks to do it so we worked hard to get it done, but it was a lot of fun. How was the video? It was great fun; we shot it in London in two days. The guys were really fun to work with. I knew that with the storyline I wanted it to be really sad, and the guy that I did the album with came up with this genius idea and I knew that was the one, I knew that I wanted to go with that. It’s so sad that it really sticks out in your mind – watch it! To date, what is your biggest high? My first ever show in Dublin, on the tour, at the Academy 2. It was amazing. Everyone was singing my songs; it was all the cliché things that you find amazing. I was so overwhelmed and nearly started crying in the middle of the show! I’ve had really good gigs before but nothing like that. I don’t know what it was about Dublin but it really sticks out in my mind. And your biggest low? Probably just the times when it dips and there’s not much to do and I’m just bumming round in Plymouth just thinking what’s next? The industry is very up and down though and I think I like having weeks on and weeks off and going full pelt into really busy days. And finally, tell us about you tour in March It’s a full band tour; I’m still trying to get over the first band gig let alone a tour of it! We’ve been rehearsing though and it sounds so good, I was so nervous about it but everyone knows what they’re doing and it sounds like the actual record. I wrote these songs in my room and now we’re playing them in a full on band – It’s amazing.

The
Unthanks
Northern sisters Becky and Rachel Unthanks have had quite a year: their tour made The Independent’s Gigs of the Year list and they released a live album too . 247’s Amy Berry caught up with Becky Unthanks, ahead of their gig at Princess Pavilion, Falmouth. How did the Unthanks come together? Me and my sister Rachel have been singing together since we were kids. Our parents have always listened to Folk music and took us to festivals. It started out as fun, but then we met Adrian McNally and he wanted to become our manager. It all went from there really, he kindly managed us for free, and we got a group of musicians together and made an album!

Who are your main influences? As we grew up around the folk scene, our first inspirations were the people we used to watch at festivals and in local pubs with our parents. My dad and his mates were also a huge inspiration for us as they love playing folk music and we loved listening to them. And of course Antony & The Johnsons and Robert Wyatt as we just love their music. What has been your highlight as a band since you’ve been together? Touring is definitely a massive highlight for us. We’ve been all over the UK; we’ve also been to America and Australia which was incredible. It’s amazing to see so many different places and we find it an honour to perform, we still can’t believe that this is our proper job. We’ve read in an interview with The Guardian that you said ‘we’re miserable buggers and not afraid of it’. Would you descibe your music as miserable? Well we like many different folk songs but I guess we are drawn to songs that touch us the most, and these tend to be sad songs. We love to sing songs that people can relate to and again, these tend to be the more ‘miserable’ songs, but also the most touching songs. If we are touched by the songs, we will perform them.
What do you think of the current folk scene in the UK? I don’t think there is one folk scene, there are loads of different ones going on all over the UK and I think it’s brilliant. There are many festivals that we love, including the Green Man Festival, which is great. I see it as ‘the more the merrier’. Tell us about your most recent album – Last We recorded this album at the end of last year. It features a lot of traditional songs such as the Gallowgate Lad, and there is also Starlist, which isn’t necessarily folk, more Punk Rock! Even though it’s not normally the kind of song we would play, we just loved the song and had to record it. You’ve been booked to play Princess Pavilions in Falmouth next month, what can people expect from your show? We won’t be performing songs from the album; we will be performing songs that we love by Antony & The Johnsons and Robert Wyatt, just like the gigs that we played in London last year. We love to play their music as they are such big inspirations to us. It was the scariest thing that we’ve ever done and we didn’t know how well it was going to go, but it turned out brilliant and we are so excited to be performing our favourite songs again. Coming from up country, are you looking forward to playing a show in the South West? Definitely! We haven’t spent a lot of time in the South West and we have never been to Falmouth but we are excited to see what it has to offer and what it is like, we’ve heard it’s very beautiful.
Find the duo online at www.the-unthanks.com, where you can grab yourself their CD, which is available on iTunes, Amazon, HMV and play.com. See The Unthanks play live at Princess Pavilions, Falmouth, on Saturday December 10. www.247magazine.co.uk

Mark Nichols Introducing
DJ, music producer and tea drinker Mr Scruff has been around since the 90’s and is still going strong: gigging all over the UK and coming to Plymouth soon. 247’s Amy Berry catches up with him and discovers that all important secret to making a good brew...
Up and coming acoustic artist, Mark Nichols, talks to Jessica Bridgeman about his exciting new single, life on tour and what new listeners can expect to hear.
Mark Nichols has made quite the impact on the UK music circuit with numerous radio appearances and an endorsement deal with Tanglewood Guitars already under his belt. Now, with a new release and tour in sight, this young musician is certainly one to watch. Asked to describe his own music in three words, Mark says, “Atmospheric, percussive and folk.” Fresh from recording his new winter single, Mark tells us how he enjoyed his stint in the studio, “A couple of my friends came down at different times throughout the day and it was a really nice vibe in the studio. We were also playing around with cameras shooting a little bit of video footage too.” Studio life is nothing compared to performing live for Mark however: ‘Working the energy of an audience to hone my live show is an adrenaline rush that can’t be replicated in the studio.’ Mark is now getting set to hit the road this December for what will be his second full UK tour. “I loved being on the road last time so I can’t wait to get out again,” he says. Like any developing artist though, Mark admits he’s feeling the strains of trying to crack the industry, “It’s an expensive business. I do all my travelling on trains in an attempt to stay green but it takes its toll on my wallet and sometimes on my patience sometimes.” Having spent some time travelling across South Africa, Morocco
and parts of Europe outside of his music, this ambitious performer isn’t one to be phased by tour life. This summer saw Mark undertake his first UK tour, a combination of notable headline dates and support slots. Comparing it to his upcoming 12-date tour, he said: “This tour consists of more headline shows, less festivals and new cities! I also have a clear selling point - to promote the new single which is out in January.” Despite recording in Sheffield’s own G2 Studios, Mark has recently relocated to Newquay, in search of lyrical inspiration and some waves. “I’m meeting new people and being exposed to new audiences. Living by the ocean is having an impact on my writing and lyrics for sure too,” he explained. Despite drawing his lyrical references from his passion for sea and surfing, through to politics, like many similar artists, Mark notes love as his biggest muse. “I’d like to think that the people who listen to my lyrics understand the deliberately subtle message of love that I try and portray,” he said. As well as the release of his new single in January, Mark has big plans for 2012. “I aim to record a brand new EP in the spring and tour as much as I can. I think Europe might be calling in the summer, too.” When asked who he’d love to duet with, Mark says: “It would be awesome to jam with Bon Iver someday!” New listeners should lend their ear to ‘Guardian’, the title track from Mark’s Debut EP.
Mark Nichols’ winter single is due for release in January. Catch him at CCN Lecture Theatre, Newquay on December 1 and Mama Stones, Exeter on December 14. See www.facebook.com/marknicholsmusic. 12 |

Why do you call yourself Mr Scruff? I originally didn’t have a name and had to come up with one very suddenly! After recording my first song in 1994, the engineer asked me what I wanted to call myself and up until then I didn’t know, but I thought for a second and then came up with ‘Mr Scruff’!
been producing and having fun with a lot of material like that recently.
I hear you’re a big tea fanatic – what’s the secret go making a good cup of tea? A lot of people get this wrong! It’s hard to get right, but the secret is, tickle the teabags rather than battle them, and tease the flavour out gently.
Are you looking forward to your return to the South West? Of course! I never take gigs in places I don’t enjoy visting. In fact, Plymouth has my favourite record store ‘Really Good Records’, I’ve picked up loads of great music from there in the past. I love the South West, not only Plymouth, but there are some amazing places, the Eden Project for example, I love it there. The people of the South West really know how to party too!
What has been the highlight of your career so far? It has to be being signed to Ninja Tune in 1998. I loved their label at the time and was a massive fan of theirs, and I think that being signed to your favourite label is always a great thing and definitely a highlight! Still to this day I look back and think that was the greatest point in my career.
What can the people of Plymouth expect from your show? A five-hour set, with a lot of people. There’s going to be a good mixture of music, a good sound system, and no lights on with a visual show on the stage, and even a tea shop! It’s gonna be a great night.
Who have been your biggest influences in music? It’s always been DJ’s rather than bands and artists as such. From a young age I had a great interest in mixing after a friend of mine played me some of his uncle’s electro records. It’s gone from there really and I would say that the biggest influences on my music would be John Peel and Afrika Bambaataa, both great DJ’s.
What advice would you give aspiring musicians in the South West? The first thing I’d say is learn about the music you’re into – and where it comes from. You can learn a lot by researching the origins of your favourite music – trace back your musical tree. Do as many gigs as possible, wherever and whenever - as it is all great experience and you can really learn from it. If it’s mixing that you’re into, the play the music that you’re nervous about playing, don’t worry about how it will go down, no crowdpleasers, it’s the risky stuff that tends to be the best music! Don’t be afraid to make a mistake – play from the heart.
Tell us about your new single ‘Feel It’ It’s basically the sound of me having fun in the studio! It’s like a lot of stuff I have been doing at the moment, very bass heavy with a lot of chopped vocals thrown in. A slow house style. I’ve

Dan Wakeham
What’s new with the South West’s Olympic snowboarder and all round nice guy: Dan Wakeham? 247 finds out. Dan Wakeham, Britain’s first male Olympic snowboard competitor, stunned the industry three years ago when he retired from World Cup circuit. He was a potential medallist for following year’s Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, had sponsorship deals with Nike, TK Maxx and LG Mobile and got to travel the world. However the constant training was gruelling and left little time for a life outside of the sport. “Competition can kill fun. I have a great time on the competitive circuit for years and don’t regret a thing, but in the end it just got a bit old,” says Dan earnestly. It takes real strength of character to admit ‘the dream’ isn’t really your dream anymore. What do you do when you retire aged 27? Well, Dan certainly hasn’t got fat and lazy…Despite leaving school at 16, with little in the way of qualifications, through snowboarding and the good old University of Life, Dan has built a CV so strong Lord Sugar would weep with pride. Through his snowboarding career, Dan learnt to promote and market himself and deal with corporate brands. He’s now employed by Head Snowboards as their national Sales and Brand Manager – a great job, loads of time on the slopes and permission to have a life and drink beer – yes please. “It suits me as I have a genuine knowledge in snowboarding products and really put their gear to the test. If boards break, I break them,” says Dan. Dan, who is away for most of the winter enjoying the snow and is at home in Plymouth during the summer, is also O’Neil’s Snowboard Team Manager and runs One Snowboarding with co-owner Hamish McKnight – running snowboard camps for Olympic and X-Games hopefuls and the general public. “I’ve spent so much of my life in a coached environment that teaching others came naturally”, explains Dan who tells us the public camps are great fun, but best if you can already snowboard and want to progress, as well and hanging out with others with similar interests. If his job with Head Snowboards and coaching commitments weren’t enough, Dan has also launched his own brand, Sterling, with friend Nick Atkins, and they now have accounts with many different stockists across the country. “Sterling is about affordable sports socks,” explains Dan, who tells that the snowboard socks sold out last year and that they’ll be adding

casual/skate socks to their range this year. Sterling sponsors a host of top UK snowboarders and is planning a new skate team too. Dan’s a busy guy. “I’m lucky that all my jobs blend in together and I can mange my time”, he assures us. Top level competitive sports are often reserved for people with very privileged backgrounds, due to costs involved, but Dan’s just a normal guy with a lot of talent and motivation – a real people’s hero, who’s flow the flag sky high for the South West. Dan learnt to board on Plymouth’s dry slope, when he was 15 and then went on to work a season in France, to get more time on the snow. “Doing a season basically costs the same as a holiday, by the time you’ve got your gear and lift pass. It’s easy to get jobs, you can live cheaply and it’s a good life,” says Dan, who recommends working a season to anyone looking to get into snowboarding.
Dan Wakeham: Vital Stats Years snowboarding: 15 Best trick: double crippler flip Favourite boarding location: Laax Favourite holiday destination: Morzine Biggest snowboarding achievement: Olympics 2006 Favorite saying: “Face everything and recover”, ‘I like to throw myself in to the deep end” Favourite food: Roast dinner Most watched film: The Business Massive fan of: Shameless the TV series. I went back and watched every episode of every series. That’s a lot of watching and now, when I’m drunk, I think I am Frank Gallagher…. Fancy some snowboard coaching from Dan? Food Truro
10 minutes with… Jeffrey (Jeff) Evans Baba Indian Restaurant
32 Lemon Street, Truro, TR1 2NR / 01872 262694
Baba restaurant is located in the middle of Truro’s beautiful Lemon Street. We were politely welcomed by the friendly staff and led downstairs to a cosy seating area with ambient music playing in the background. The menu here is extensive and generally mouth watering. My fellow diner and I decided to try Baba’s new ‘Winter Warmer’ menu where between Sunday and Thursday you can order any starter, main dish and rice or Nan bread for just £15 (excluding Thali and Sazzadur Specials). Considering that some of these fragrant and exquisitely cooked dishes such as the King Prawn Poori starter (yum!) or the Chicken Bhaza that engulfs the table with fire as it is dramatically flamed at your table would normally cost anything up to £10.50 and main dishes up to £17.95, this really is an amazing offer. For mains we had Lamb Korai and King Prawn Bhuna accompanied with Peshwari Nan and Lemon and Ginger Rice – quite a talking point for us with its delicate flavours and a great contrast to some of the spicier dishes. We topped off our meal with a delicious dessert – the Hazelnut Delight is exactly as the name suggests – full of ice cream and swimming in thick chocolate sauce. The only unfortunate point here is that Baba has no card/cheque facilities, but I promise its well worth a trip to the nearby cash point. Ellie Williams
Street Art
Looking at Exeter artist Jeff Evans’ work is like looking at a photograph, only it’s painted with spray cans! 247’s Jasmine Sevette had a chat with Jeff to find out more. Who has inspired you the most in your work? I love the work of Trans 1, The Mac and Belin but I get inspired to paint by the encouragement of the people around me. I’m heavily influenced by black and white photography and my aim is to produce something that people will think is a photograph. How long have you been doing Graffiti for? I’ve been painting for about 8 years but been into Graff since forever. What do you do when you’re not doing Graffiti? Work and sleep. If I’m not painting I’m drawing or I’m watching someone else paint online or I’m thinking about the next thing I’m going to do. I like to think that I’m quite a creative person so I always need to be doing something, I do occasionally do nongraffiti related stuff and I’m currently learning to play the guitar, which is great fun but hard work on my fingers! Have you painted at any conventions/special graffiti events? I’ve painted at a number of different events, Upfest in Bristol, The Freakshow Jam in Tamworth and a number of local events that I’ve organized myself too.

Plymouth
How important do you think it is to get your own individual style? Very. In the Graff world, if you copy someone else’s style you’re just a biter! Its fine to copy someone else’s style when your just starting out; all graffiti artists from my generation started by copying pieces from a book called “Subway Art”, but you do this on paper, not on walls. Gradually you start to develop your own style. You will get no respect in this game if you don’t know your history and you don’t have your own style.
Exeter
Gurkha
Himalayan Spice
Pukka
Situated right in the heart of Falmouth town, with views right across The Moor, the Gurkha restaurant is the place to go if you’ve got a hankering for delicious Indian (and Nepalese) cuisine. Rumoured to have been graced by Prince William in fact! If it’s good enough for royalty it’s good enough for 247! Bustling and welcoming was the atmosphere, the restaurant is light and spacious and doesn’t feel crowded, even on a busy Saturday night. Service is personal, and the waiters will happily help inform your decision-making. After the obligatory papadoms, we started with the Gurkha platter, a selection including onion bhajis, chicken tikka and sheek kebab. A tasty tempting to nibble on while you try and make up your mind about the main! I decided on the Kosheli chicken, the Gurkha’s most popular dish. Boneless chicken, slow cooked in a traditional mild sauce, tender and succulent and full of flavour. We chose to accompany this with Saag Aloo (Potato and Spinach), Nepalese special rice (with vegetables and eggs) and a Peshwari Naan. The food was incredibly tasty; the Kosheli Chicken is easily my new favourite dish. The presentation was colourful and creatively put together; a literal feast for all your senses. Hannah Giles
Tucked away on one of the Barbican’s quaint, cobbled side streets is Himalayan Spice, which serves both Nepalese and Indian food. The aroma filling the outside street will have you salivating before you even read the menu…The interior of the restaurant is a feast for the eyes – lots of gorgeous wood, quirky exposed walls and an abundance of Indian and Nepalese decorative pictures and mirrors – so much nicer than the minimalist approach. Himalayan Spice’s menu is extensive, traditional and reasonably priced. If you want a starter, but are not sure what to order go for the mix - lamb tikka, chicken tikka, sheekh kebab, samosa and onion bhaji, or try something more exciting like chicken chilli - cooked with green chilli, capsicum and onion: popular in Nepal. From biryani and balti to tandoori and chefs specialty dishes – there’s everything you’d expect on the menu and more. I opted for the lamb tikka masala (£7.95 ) - marinated barbequed lamb in a creamy masala sauce. It was deliciously creamy and flavorsome, but not overpowering, and there was plenty of it too. My chapatti was perfectly light and the perfect accompaniment to my rich curry. Oh and the wine list is pretty good too – I can recommend the rosé. Rachael D’Cruze
Presentation and attention to detail feature heavily at this newly opened Indian restaurant, which also has a relaxing, stylish and modern feel. Pukka’s manager is the winner of the 2009 British Curry Awards, and Pukka is also in conjunction with Topsham’s popular Denley’s. So experience and good reputation are firmly in place, and this definitely comes across in the quality of the food, which is utterly mind-blowing. Pukka specialises in a range of Tava dishes, from the North West frontier of the Kashmir Valley, with its own unique taste and flavour. The Sabji Jalfrazi is a top choice for a vegetarian dish, with beautifully cooked vegetables in a curry sauce with a real kick. Look out for the whole chillies, for that extra boost. Bahari Morghi is also of the highest quality- this is a scrumptious chicken dish from Punjab, which is available in medium or hot. The curry sauce it comes in is the stuff of dreams! My curry, like many others, comes with rice and nann bread, so you don’t have to order separately. The portions are extremely generous, the food is top-notch and the prices are very affordable, what’s not to like? Arash Torabi

Music Arash Torabi
Backbone
Dan Mangan Oh Fortune
(City Slang) Any music that resonates with a langorous, melancholic country glow tends to work its way into my veins on first listen. Vancouver starlet, Dan Mangan’s third offering is no exception. ‘Oh Fortune’ is a starkly beautiful, very sad and very uplifting record and everyone knows that all the best music is made this way. If ‘Daffodil’ fails to leave you pining for a lost loved one or rueing the days you made the wrong decisions, then you have a heart as hard and dry as sandstone. And if the Lucero-esque ‘Rows Of Houses’ doesn’t fire up your indignation with its overwhelming, ever-building refrain then you deserve to listen to nothing but Kasabian for the rest of your life.
Bad Ideas
Murder Of Gods (self release)
If Hot Water Music decided to throw ‘Caution’ to the wind and go for the pop dollar, they’d find themselves not a million miles away from Bad Ideas, aka Leeds roots-troubadour, Sam Cook. ‘Murder Of Gods’ is a great album of acousticdriven punk-pop with a strong undertow of emotional yearning and some drive-time guitar hooks straight out of the Wollard-Ragan canon. When the ‘band’ step off the gas the results are equally as rewarding. ‘Sing Or Sink’ allows for Sam’s Southern-hewn inflection to fill out the plaintive dreadnaught strums, while ‘Comfort Medicine’ is Counting Crows for the nu-country generation. It may not be designed to fire up your soul but it’ll certainly warm the cockles of your heart.
Los Campesinos! Hello Sadness (Wichita)
There’s not much that’s new under the indie sun but Los Campesinos! are doing their level best to keep the flame alive. ‘Hello Sadness’ still retains an element of the maniacally intelligent guitar pop that first put them on the radar (to wit: ‘Songs About Your Girlfriend’) but, four albums in, the band have discovered a new, world-weary way of communicating, with Gareth Campesinos! laying his heart, true to form, on a cold morgue table for all to inspect. Opener ‘By Your Hand’ is a more youthful version of something that Les Savy Fav might have stumbled upon while the stunning ‘To Tundra’ resonates with the same emotional grandeur as The Clash circa-’Straight To Hell’. Reinvention suits them well..
Dan Sartain
Too Tough To Live
(One Little Indian) Not only is that title a blatant nod to The Ramones, the new direction that Southern sleaze-meister, Dan Sartain, has fashioned is pure East Coast proto-punk that could have landed on any of Joey and Co’s first three albums. Eschewing the reverb-soaked surf motif of old, ‘Rona’ and ‘Swap Meet’ are nothing if not passable pastiche, while ‘Boo Hoo Hoo’ takes its cue from Richard Hell: all menacing, rudimentary mid-’70s guitar chords and nihilist spittle. So, it’s a trip down a geographically specific memory lane; one strewn with puke, used needles and faded anti-glamour; and Sartain just about gets away with it due to his subterranean credentials. Lesser men would be laughed out of town.

Meg Baird
Birdengine
(Wichita)
(Bleeding Heart Recordings)
Seasons on Earth Faultless second solo album from Philadelphiabased lead singer of Espers. There are echoes of Nico’s classic Chelsea Girl, in the acoustic guitar-picking style, and her voice is very similar to Sandy Denny‘s. Instrumentally, the bulk of the record consists mainly of a lone guitar, accompanied by a delicate and dreamy pedal steel. Her cover of The House of Love’s Beatles and The Stones is a strange choice, but it works remarkably well. What is incredible is that despite staying in the same low tempo all the way, the album never becomes monotonous. It’s as if it’s one long piece from start to finish. Painfully beautiful, and absolutely fucking wonderful. Psychedelic folk at its finest.
Nihiti
Faced With Splendour
(Lo Bit Landscapes) New Yorkers, Nihiti take a break from their usual brand of screaming synthesizers and metallic drums, to offer a mini album/EP’s worth of acoustic-driven melodies. And it suits them well, particularly on the opener, The Kind Ropes, which sounds like it could have been recorded in 1967. All seven songs are upbeat, so it’s quite natural to assume that they’d work well ampedup. The use of a cello gives the songs colour, and it works well against the solid strumming of the acoustic guitars. Next year’s album will see them return to their electronic set up, but it would be good to have another set like this from them in the future.
Tom Waits Bad As Me
(Anti) The gravel-voiced one is back, with his first new album in seven years, featuring long-term co-writer and producer, Kathleen Brennan, and guest musicians Keith Richards and Flea. The album maintains a consistency in its eerie qualities, and there is diversity in styles, ranging from the chuggy title track to the spooky late-night piano balladry of Kiss Me. On the gospel-tinged Satisfied, he spits every last lyric with venom and sheer grit. The deluxe edition is nicely packaged with three bonus songs. Creatively speaking, Bad As Me may not set the world alight, but it’ll keep the fans satisfied, and it makes for great late night listening.
David Lynch
Crazy Clown Time (Sunday Best)
OK, we know what he’s famous for, but can he also cut it in music? Only slightly. Pinky’s Dream, featuring Karen O on lead vocals is reminiscent of Siouxsie and the Banshees: darkly psychedelic and sexy. A good thing. But Good Day Today is a mediocre house tune with vocoder vocals: a bad thing. So Glad and Noah’s Ark are like early Tricky, but without the charm. If he didn’t talk over the music, some of this album could work as a film soundtrack. Some good studio techniques and spine-chilling effects, but his pretentious drivel really doesn’t help. Strange and Unproductive Thinking is pure verbal diarrhoea. It’s worth downloading Pinky’s Dream, but that‘s about it.
The Crooked Mile
So despite making and releasing music since 2005, The Crooked Mile is the debut album of Dorset musician Birdengine (known to his mum as Lawry Joseph Tilbury) . We first caught him at Green Man festival a couple of years back and were instantly drawn to his swooning, ethereal folk (though don’t tell him I said that, he hates that tag). With sniffs of the grandeur of Revere, he manages to build these epic soaring songs which create that involuntary head nodding gurn. There’s a definite experimental air to his music with the obscure sound of a telephone or the top end of a xylophone appearing to make sporadic appearances in the record. With harmonies, Bon Iver would be proud of and some of the dark brooding beauty of Beirut this is one for Green Man/End of the Road festival fans for sure.
Various
BBC Radio 1 Peel Sessions 1977-1979 (EMI) He’s been gone for seven years now but his influence remains and this John Peel compilation is set to prove popular among diehard fans. Showcasing some of the iconic material from the late 70s, this two-disc compilation includes the regular old punk greats from The Jam to Buzzcocks and The Stranglers to Stiff Little Fingers. It’s also got some more obscure additions, such as Aswad, The Psychadelic Furs and The Ruts. If ever a compilation CD was a trip down memory lane, this is it. Not only will it remind you of the golden age of radio, but if you listen to it correctly – on your stereo in your room it has the power to actually take you back there. None of this pristince iPod shit please.
Matt Cardle Letters (SyCo)
Um, yeah, so curiosity got the better of me and I decided to review soppy X Factor winner Matt Cardle’s debut album. And now I can’t unlisten dammit. What’s more, I know it’s gonna provide the soundtrack to a million shit TV shows about helping sick kids, reuniting families and wedding shows. Ugh. To be fair the album starts off OK with that mainstream soaring stadium esque soft rock – think Bon Jovi meets Snow Patrol – then it just turns into generic boring man dirge. From the black and white image on the cover of the former decorator trying to look thoughtful to the compulsory pictures generated in your head of Cardle doing his foot stamping, lip quivering faux emotional thang this is truly cringeworthy.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela and C.U.B.A Area 52
(Rubyworks Records) Anyone who has ever seen Rodrigo Y Gabriela playing live woulda probably taken the second half of the set trying to pick their jaw up off the floor. The Mexican duo are among the most accomplished guitar players in the world. It’s the kinda thing which wither inspires you to practice more or makes you think ‘fuck it, I ain’t ever gonna be that good’ and give up. Here we have a beautifully diverse album with a Cuban orchestra (C.U.B.A). Combine the immense geetar skills of Rodrigo Y Gabriela with the musical richness of some fine Cuban musicians and you have an undeniably excellent record. www.247magazine.co.uk
Aldo Vanucci
Kidz In The Hall Occasion
(Duck Down Records) When Kidz in The Hall came out they were the bright new hopes of the newly relaunched Rawkus, who failed to live up to their previous steez, and that can no way be placed at the feet of the Kidz as they were on it from the start. Few albums in and how are they doing, the soul sampling isn’t as prominent but the word play and flow more than makes up for that. They played at the Respect Festival in Exeter a while back and kept the crowd bouncing when Wiley didn’t show. This album isn’t gonna change the game but if you like a current snapshot of where uk hip hop is right now this is as good a place as any. More than a few tracks tip thier hat to Bangladesh who produced Lollipop and 6 foot 7 foot for Lil Wayne.
Pusha T
Fear of God part II
(Decon Records) Lawdamercy! This is like the rap version of the Avengers, one half of the Clipse brings in a who who of the game right now, Tyler the creator, Diddy, Yeezy, Rick Ross, all laying down some heavy heavy flows but none that outshine Pusha T, except maybe Tyler who I’m slowly being won over by. If it weren’t for his recent Pixie Lott collabo I would say Pusha T could no wrong. This though is a top notch album and is sorely needed in a world where so much urban music is sounding like a night in Ibiza. No word on who’s produced these but the stars are the mc’s not the producers.

(Hidden Agenda) A UK rapper who, if talent was a sure sign of success, would easily be as big as Talib Kweli, but like Jay Z said: “I dumbed down for my audience and doubled my dollars, they criticized me for it yet they all yell ‘holla’”. Dubbledge clearly has skills and brains too, coupled with some more than tasty beats from the like of Chase and Status, Metabeats and DJ IQ and this is up there as one of the most accomplished things I’ve heard of late. Saying that though, Professor Green was a terror on the battle scene but was mostly ignored til he did that Inxs sampling tune. If Dubbledge can find a UK version of Diddy, this guy will smash it, if I was younger, had more time and didn’t have to dance badly like Diddy I would jump at the chance.
Goapele
Break of Dawn
(Decon Records) I love this girl. Always have. Voice and face of an angel, first came out when this kind of thing was called Neo Soul, ask your parents, actually just Google it. She almost broke through with some killer funky house tracks and some heavy major label albums. Even a stint down with Yeezy’s Good imprint didn’t make this amazing talent blow. This is another killer album, leftfield soul, think what a lost Stax or Hi record would sound like if made today, in no way mainstream like Amy or Duffy but this is proper modern soul made for people who love quality vocals and who have heard the odd hip hop album. Turn off X factor, turn the lights down low and drift away with this, you’ll be better for it.

Louk
Scot Project presents Supermusique!
Stop This Feelin! (Druck) Scot Project maintains his reputation of a producer that delivers quality over quantity with this latest offering on Druck. Whilst admittedly, this isn’t the pace of the tracks I normally play in my DJ sets, a good track is a good track and I have been caining the hell out of it both at home (and on the work stereo) and it definitely has pride of place as a wicked set opener. Cleverly fusing trance and electro, with quality vocal work, warm synths and pristine production, this one is set to smash the place over the coming months, and rightly so I say
Hertz
In My Mind (Praxxiz) Sweden have always had a knack for exporting a higher class of techno (check Adam Beyer and Cari Lekebusch for examples!), and Hertz has been an artist have championed over the years. Here he delivers a release on Dr Motte’s Praxxiz imprint. Cleverly sampling an old vocal (which Antiloop and others have also used, I think the origins of which are from a 1989 house track), and throwing it over a delightful groove that builds and builds with gentle layers until all hell breaks loose, this has been rocking the world of many a key player and also features an acapella which works well over pretty much everything!
CH1
Groove Mover (Digitally Infected) This was a nice surprise from Looe’s Digitally Infected! Normally concentrating on harder trance, this three-tracker from CH1 is full of some serious techno. On the morning of a recent trip to Amsterdam Dance Event (and before a subsequent Ukraine gig the same weekend), label boss Busho hit me up saying that these would blow my mind and sure enough they did exactly that. ‘Groove Mover’ is the stand out track for me, being a relentless techno assault but with some quirky stabs in place, with a kick so devastating and that big room sound ever present that it caused havoc when dropped in Kiev.
Jake Nicholls
Grooveline ((Joyride) This label I have been raving about Uprising resident Jake for quite a few years now, and we had the pleasure of playing back to back at Nature One Festival in Germany earlier this year for Global Hard Trance. What I like about his sets are that he plays a mixture of old and new tracks with no pretension at all fusing trance and techno influences with the results always being very dance floor friendly. That’s exactly what is here on ‘Grooveline’, a simple groove, with a Germanic bassline, tribalistic percussion and Samba vocals. It sounds like a nightmare on paper but works oh so well at the clubs and festivals.

This Calamity
www.thiscalamity.com Plymouth resident, Martyn Crocker, has been around the musical block a few times, most recently with Less Than Me, but This Calamity is his first venture onto solo terrain. And debut release, the ‘Animals’ EP, ain’t too shabby at all. Eschewing the upbeat funk-tinged rock of his past incarnation, TC is a soul-searching exercise that draws chiefly upon an acoustic motif with echoes of Circa Survive and co at their most intimate. Pianos, cellos and all manner of percussion help to push these three songs into the professional domain while Crocker’s enunciated voice drifts purposefully throughout. There’s a lot of mileage to be gained here so it’ll be interesting to see where Crocker can take it.
Luke Scott Dumper www.reverbnation.com/ lukescottdumper
It takes a lot of getting used to, does Luke Scott Dumper’s piercing soprano squawk. Like Cedric Blixler of The Mars Volta without the discipline, songs like ‘Bottom Of The Bottle’ and ‘Lists’ are reflective and hurting yet plagued with some decidedly overwrought expressivity from the Plymouth-based troubadour. But these stripped down vignettes are worth the effort in the long run. ‘Pick Me Up’ is the best song by a margin. It kicks off sounding sad and soulful, like Bon Iver, with soft falsetto layers (more preferable to LSD’s forced falsetto) and swathes of keyboard amongst the melancholic strums, until the vocal drops, unpredictably, to its natural pitch – arguably, one that he would benefit from by using more often.
Von Bartha
www.vonbartha.bandcamp.com Bristol quartet, Von Bartha, have concocted a fantasy history of their band’s development akin to The Ramones but with a dark cabaret slant. It is said (by them) that they are all half-siblings mothered by Comtesse Martha Von Bartha, a psychotic libertine who disowned all of her offspring within hours of childbirth. But we don’t care about concept conceits, we just want to know what they sound like. Thankfully not too bad. The music is a blend of driving new wave and grumbling jazz-punk while vocalist, Emma, lends the band a ‘90s post-punk feel reminiscent of bands like Inside Out and Sidi Bou Said (ask your post-feminist aunt). They don’t quite live up to their macabre mythmaking but it is early days.
Bright Lights, Big Zombie www.myspace.com/
brightlightsbigzombie Released through Exeter’s Pastime imprint, Bright Lights, Big Zombie’s debut album is true to the label ethos, keeping things unassuming, slightly under-rehearsed and decidedly lo-fi. With a deft nod to the C86/Sarah Records coterie, the likes of ‘Sad Dreams, Early Mornings’ and ‘Hold Tight’ are the antithesis of Cro-Magnon rock with delicate vocal flutters, slightly cracked rhythms, wobbly bass lines and a wistful melancholy that, on occasion, may make you want to grab them by the lapels and shake some grit into their gloom. But, fair play, there’s room for everyone in Popworld and there will always be boys and girls who warm to the simple, understated pleasures offered herein. magazine | 27

Released: 2 December Dir: Martin Scorsese Starring: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Sacha Baron Cohen 2011/US/TBC Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and his inventions. Last month we had Steven Spielberg try his hand in 3D with Tintin, now Martin Scorsese gives it a go in the third dimension. Early word has been nothing short of staggering, with the godfather of stereoscopic 3D, James Cameron, proclaiming it as the best 3D film ever. But don’t let the visuals convince you this is just optical feast, as the emotional core of this film has lead to mention of Oscars for Marty.

SEE
The Best of the Rest.... THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (TBC) Released: 26 December Dir: David Fincher Starring: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright 2011/US/TBC Yep, the supermarkets started stocking for Xmas early this year, and the cinemas are following suit… Arthur Christmas (Santa’s son) uses his father’s ultra-hightech operation, hidden beneath the North Pole, to complete a secret mission before Christmas Day. This festive animated adventure will provide plenty of familyfriendly fun and in 3D too.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL (TBC) Released: 26 December Dir: Brad Bird Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton 2011/US/TBC Sounding more like a video game than a blockbuster sequel, this adventure sees the spy-tastic Tom Cruise going rogue in another terrorist-busting mind-melding plot. He is rejoined in his capers by ever-reliable Simon Pegg and newcomer Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) after the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) is implicated in a bombing of the Kremlin. Expect explosions, gun play, and Tom Cruise overacting his heart out in some tense scene involving him being strapped to a chair…
NEW YEAR’S EVE (TBC) Released: 9 December Dir: Garry Marshall Starring: Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry 2011/US/TBC The lives of several couples and singles in New York intertwine over the course of New Year’s Eve. This film features a cast list longer than the New Year’s Honours list with the highlights including Zac Efron and Jon Bon Jovi (wow!). The plot is a pretty uninspiring romance that sees everybody under-the-sun getting together as the clock strikes 12 midnight. A British version may have been more interesting with the cast getting drunk and then stumbling onto the streets, before vomiting and fighting into the early hours.
PUSS IN BOOTS 3D (U) Released: 9 December Director: Chris Miller Starring: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis 2011/US/90 min This spin-off from the Shrek franchise sees the every popular Puss in Boots get his own adventure. Set before the oh-socute cat met Shrek this should provide an interesting back-story to one of the series most well loved characters. This time Puss goes up against his old friend Humpty Dumpty (who fell off a wall) who betrays him in order to get a goose to lay a Golden Egg!! There should be laughs
aplenty, and the eye-popping 3D and should be Shrek-cellant!
SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (TBC) Released: 16 December Dir: Guy Ritchie Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Jared Harris 2011/US/TBC Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. This time they are joined by a knife-wielding gypsy temptress Sim in this bigger, blockbusting, sequel. Guy Ritchie returns to the director’s chair in an adventure that promises to build on the average, but entertaining first film.
THE THING (15) Released: 2 December Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton 2011/US/103 min John Carpenter’s spooky arctic thriller gets remade for the 21st century. The premise is simplicity itself with a scientific research team discovering an alien spacecraft in the ice, only to find that its alien inhabitant can change its shape to look like any member of the crew. It this is anything like the original expect bucket loads of paranoia, gore, and the best special effects money can buy, but lets just hope they don’t ruin memories of one of the best horror films of the 1980’s.

Live ‘It’s a jungle out there, especially in the jungle’
I know it’s rude to point and stare but TUBELORD frontman, Jo Prendergast, is surely losing the plot with that haircut and those halfmast cords (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 18th Oct). More worryingly, the music is suffering alongside the sartorial abstractions. Where once they were a spasmodic fluster of post-punk airs and graces, now they seem to be a fading shadow. But, thankfully, they do still know how to bully a decent math-pop melody into submission with a few well aimed licks and pinches. Tonight, however, belonged to THE PATRICK JAMES PEARSON BAND. The trio, fresh from supporting Hard-Fi, were on fire, churning out effervescent, timeless nuggets with more melody-rich vim than any other piano-pop ensemble you care to mention. Before them, the ever-annihilating DAMERELS pummelled their way through garagepunk beauties like ‘Puppet Strings’ with an artful venom that couldn’t fail to impress. After the show, we all took a stroll over to see VINCE LEE & THE BIG COMBO at the Blues Bar & Grill, wherein all our self-perpetuated beliefs that we are substantial musicians came crashing down in a hail of jaw-dropping swing-blues and rockabilly guitar wizardry. Vince on Later... With Jools Holland? Only a matter of time. They were the ska-core top dogs but when CAPDOWN split in 2007 it seemed that everyone sobbed into their checkered hankies and formed a million shitty little copycat bands in their honour (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 22nd Oct). But, hold your horses there, fella, they’re back! Which means that all the hyper-skankin’ chancers will be exposed for the pale facsimiles they truly are. Further still, Capdown were on fire; powering through with all the grit and grandeur of bands half their age. DIRTY REVOLUTION failed to impress with lacklustre punk rock-steady mores, although their flirtation with 2 Tone threw up some tolerable moments. You may be too young to know or care but Hawkwind are legends of the underground. Resurrected side-project, HAWKLORDS, on the other hand, were a damp squib (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 25th Oct). Vocalist, Ron Tree, was a major annoyance, waving a small animal bone around and spouting pseudo-pagan gibberish along with other members who should know better. It’s as if Spinal Tap never happened. Still, Nik Turner and Harvey Bainbridge were on hand to lend the band some space-rock authenticity, although Turner’s solo sax encore was a monumental anticlimax. Roll on the 2012 Ozric Tentacles reunion. Now that morally bankrupt red-top of social ruin, The Sun, have dedicated column inches to SONIC BOOM SIX are we to expect the band to roll over and accept their place in the rebel-pop mainstream (Underworld, London, 30th Oct)? Not on the strength of this celebratory performance. The band’s melting pot of street sounds – hip-hop, punk, ragga, you know the drill – hasn’t changed much over the years but their astute song-craft and sonic cohesion were in abundance. Kent rabble rousers, ELECTRIC RIVER, are clearly aiming high. Their combination of Clash sneer and Big Audio Dynamite groove was as immediate as it was vintage-sounding. Hopefully, they have the stamina to see it through. So, here we are, mid-tour in Europe, with AGAINST ME!, and it just needs to be said that, on the strength of these shows, they are one of the greatest rock’n’roll bands on the planet. The US quartet have attracted a lot of detractors over the past couple years but in the sweltering heat of a German clubhouse there are few bands who can muster this much energy, affection and emotion for a blissful 90 minutes.
