Saas Fee, Switzerla We nd, where the only travelled to planning on doin floating we were g was through the air… We joined some of the youngest and most talented female rippers on Roxy’s team from across Europe at their training cam p at Saas Fee in Switzerland, with fellow team mem bers on hand to inspire and lead younger girls and the Scottish snowboar half pipe queen ding legend and Lesley McKenna at the helm, coac the riders during hing the by coach and train week long camp. Several hours from Geneva Airpo a popular destinati rt, Saas Fee is on for snowboar ders, and during October, the reso rt hosts the Half Pipe Roxy Camp took place just one week World Cup. With the half pipe and kickers on top form, the girls new tricks and perfe had plenty of room to practice ct the ones they the hang of. In any case, this year looks like it’ll be a blast: 247 Magazine is 10 years old, we’ve got a diary full of festivals to attend, and our super new website is looking rather whizzy and nice and that. Your new album Romance is Boring explores a few different themes. Where did the inspiration come from? That’s down to Gareth, who writes the lyrics. It’s mainly autobiographical. Tom writes the music and the rest of us contribute ideas. Who are your influences and inspirations? It varies individually, but as a collective, it’s mainly ‘90s American bands like Pavement, Sonic Youth and Guided by Voices. Gareth draws a lot of lyrical ideas from people like Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) and Paul Heaton (Housemartins, Beautiful South). Jamie Stewart is also on your new album, alongside members of Parenthetical Girls… Gareth was a big fan of Parenthetical Girls – we had an opportunity to tour with them and we became good friends. We recorded the album in Seattle, where he lives, and we asked him to contribute vocals on one of the songs. Romance is Boring is your second official album. But what aboutt We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, which came out shortly after your first album? We always intended to release an EP between the first and the second record, and when we came out of the session we had 10 tracks. We liked all of them so we decided to release them all. 10 songs is too long for an EP, so it got labelled as an album. Legally and contractually with our label, Romance… is our second album, but it took the pressure off, because there’s always pressure on doing the second album. Tell us how your sound has progressed with this album. The first record was more like a collection of songs we had when we first started the band. The EP or album, We Are Beautiful…was the progressional stage and now Romance… is the sound we want Los Campesinos! to be like. It’s got more of a linear process and it flows. We’ve gone into the recording process of it as an album, rather than just recording a few songs. How does the new album translate live? We mess around with songs a lot more in the studio. Some people say it’s different live, but at the end of the day, there’s still seven of us on stage: it’s still Los Campesinos! with the energy and environment we create on stage. Has being on Wichita Recordings helped you as a band? I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about

Wichita. It’s a small team and they sign bands they enjoy listening to and want to see live: it’s not done to make money. They’ve been really supportive of us and we really enjoy working with them. Would you say a lot of bands play it safe these days and don’t break away from conventions, or is it the other way around? It’s hard because if you look at (and I hate to say it) mainstream ‘indie’, a lot of bands are quite similar, but there are a lot of bands in the background who are doing some exciting stuff. There is a really good music scene in Britain which is thriving, it’s just that there’s different stuff that the press pay attention to. Who are the exciting bands or artists for you right now, and who might your fans also like? We have the pleasure of having an eighth member with us at the moment, called Sparky Deathcap, who also does his own stuff. He writes some exciting songs, similar to Why? He also supported us on the last tour we did in October. We’ve formed relationships with a few other bands, like Johnny Foreigner and Dananananaykroyd. We’re all friends and our fans seem to follow the same bands, which is really good. Give us a description of the Los Campesinos! live experience. Basically, seven of us on stage having as much fun as possible really. A lot of energy and a lot going on. The audience don’t know where to look because there’s so much excitement going on. And hopefully, that energy and excitement will pass down to the audience so that they’ll enjoy it as well.

The first Battle Stations event took place in November 2007 as a social event for the University of Plymouth Bboy Society, run in conjunction with Plymouth based clothing and paint shop Forty Five. The night consisted of a mash up of breakdancing, beatboxing, turntablism, MCing and live graffiti with the hottest hip hop soundtrack, all set in a “battle” scenario. The exciting concept behind the event and the dedicated team behind it made that first night a massive success, and Battle Stations became a monthly event. On the second Thursday of every month, Battle Stations kicks up the heat at Voodoo Lounge in Plymouth and all elements of hip hop are represented, with bragging rights on the line. Still supported by Forty Five, the Battle Stations team includes Kitastrophe as the host and main co-ordinator, resident DJs and co-coordinators Sharp, Blakeatron and Fu-Styles, who play an up-tempo mix of oldschool, party hip hop and Bboy funk. They’re joined by Luke Christison on posters and promotion, and the team is rounded off by Dred Ned and VJ Eda. We caught up with Kitastrophe (aka Kit Thomas) just after the Battle Stations second birthday events, which took the roof off Voodoo Lounge... What’s the typical atmosphere at a Battle Stations night? It’s a very inclusive, social vibe, we have everyone from ravers to goths coming down. Some of the battles can get pretty heated but when the battle’s over it’s all smiles.

There are so many people who help us out every month and they all deserve a shout out, however, a special mention needs to go out to our previous poster designers Rob Dutton and Greg Mould, DJs Parker and XL who played at our birthdays, and the Bboys from Just 4 Funk and the 3Cs who have covered a lot of miles to come and represent. Big thanks as well to MC Sleaze who has been our quality control on the mic, and on the boards, Onion and Filf have stepped up at the last minute on a number of occasions.

What has been the most memorable Battle Stations night so far? Both of the birthday events were ridiculous. Our first birthday saw the YML Bboy crew reunion, and a battle between Plymouth and Exeter. More recently, the second birthday saw What’s next for Battle Stations? What are your plans for the first ever BattleStations under 18s battles, and a two on the future? twos Bboy battle that exceeded all our expectations. Hopefully we’re going to be doing more of the youth battle nights, and possibly another Battle Stations night in Cornwall. What are the aims of Battle Stations? Primarily, we all love our hip hop and we wanted to take an active part in its progression within the South West. As much an institution these days as rock’n’roll, Massive Attack soldier on in their melancholic pursuit of organic/digital unison. ‘Splitting The Atom’ is the first song that achieves its aim: a languid yet affecting dirge centred around heavy handclaps and minor keys. Guy Garvey lends his dulcet croon to ‘Flat Of The Blade’, and Damon Albarn plants a bittersweet kiss on ‘Saturday Come Slow’, while other guests – Martina TopleyBird, Horace Andy, Hope Sandoval, Tunde Adebimpe – weigh in with mixed results. The Big Black & The Blue (Wichita) Famed for their stunning, down-home cover of Fleet Foxes’ ‘Tiger Mountain Peasant Song’, Swedish teen sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg, aka First Aid Kit, are the point where ‘60s prairie songbook meets nu-folk uber-cool, and it’s a spellbinding delight. Opener, ‘In The Morning’, sets out their stall: beautiful, distinctive vocal harmonies punctuated by purposeful acoustic strums; while elsewhere the siblings’ masterful country aura instils a genuine sense of hope. Bustin’ Out- New Wave to New Beat: The Post Punk Era 1979-1981 (Year Zero) ‘Post punk’ is a broad term, and its synthy/ funky strand is represented here. Punk rock kicked the doors open for artists like Gary Numan (included here as Tubeway Army) to go through. Check out the punky-disco take on Arthur Brown’s Fire by Lizzy Mercer Descioux, Killing Joke’s synth-laden disco, Almost Red and Joseph K’s charged up Sorry For Laughing. Influential artists galore: Dead Can Dance, 23 Skidoo and Front 242. Essential listening for anyone interested in the roots of today’s electropop bands. Arash Torabi

Los Campesinos! Romance is Boring

(Wichita Recordings) The second album proper from Los Campesinos! is packed with all the ingredients that make their mark: melody, energy and imagination are here in abundance. Opening track In Media Res is just one of the songs that shows the band’s maturity and progression since their 2008 debut. And they’ve done it without compromising their quirky approach to timing- check We’ve Got Your Back for proof. With Romance… the band have created an altogether larger sound, whilst remaining ballsy. They know how to capture an eccentric English sound without going too over the top. Arash Torabi

DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH New Plymouth trio, THE HACKS, deliver a truly fantastic amalgamation of Peacocks-esque punkabilly and new wave surf riffola the likes of which you rarely hear from a Westcountry band. Their demo EP is laden with cocksure attitude, wonderful melodic flourishes and the kind of effervescent energy that turned bands like The Living End into such globe-straddling entities. And what’s more, they have a confident and clever vocalist who ties a big bow of authenticity around the likes of ‘That Girl’ and the awesome proto-punk blast of ‘Stand Down’. All three songs here are strong, individual and memorable which, to any budding hopefuls out there, is the perfect demo in a nutshell. If The Hacks play it right, they could be enjoying mucho indie label interest within the next six months. www.myspace.com/thehacksband

ROCK SHOW DEMO OF THE MONTH After the success of 2008’s Tunguska EP, FATTY CHAN returned in January with ‘Sever’, a belter of a full album that shows the band’s sound developing. Stand out tracks Survive & Invisible Fear are already getting air play on the Rock Show and the album is receiving critical acclaim in the music press. These Westcountry boys are going to have a blinding year ahead of them. Whether he warmed to mainman Tom Hazledine’s bizarre, Jarvis Cocker-meets-drunken uncle croon is another story but you can’t help thinking that the likes of ‘Our Little Secret’ are an idiosyncrasy too far. Still, the songs on their brilliantly packaged demo EP ‘Scaring The Pets’ do have some spirited moments here and there, and the music itself is well crafted, especially when a fluid violin makes an appearance on ‘Bedroom Nerves’. The duo are also involved in the running of Bearfaced Records so watch out for future releases through the label. www.myspace.com/eatenbymonsters Precocious bedroom beats-boffin alert… DIRTY DIGITS is 15 year-old Totnes lad, Romek. Eschewing predictable samples in favour of heavily manipulated synth dialogue and self-conjured vocal sources (from younger siblings by the sound of it), the likes of ‘Demon Headmaster’ and ‘Velcro’ are paranoiac slabs of experimental electronica on a par with the squelchtastic, Cookie Monsta or early Aphex Twin. The delightfully titled ‘Sex And Socks’ goes one further by dropping a skewed, Clangers-esque tune that tech-twiddlers twice his age would endorse. Clearly a prodigious talent, Romek’s deployment of thick, acidic chords and atmospheric flourishes are a sign of something special in our boudoir-producer midst. A triumph of style over content? Quite possibly. (www.myspace.com/ kittyandthelostboys) Welsh trio, TOUCHFINDER’s debut album, ‘The Art of Fighting Without Fighting’, addresses bullying, Daily Mail readers and Alain De Boton’s theory of Status Anxiety, while the sleeve art features the last building left standing after the bombing of Hiroshima. The music? A pale Muse imitation. Shame. www.myspace.com/ touchfinder It’s hard to believe that the likes of Coldplay and Keane are still inspiring young men to pick up guitars and form bands but here’s London quartet, THE KID JONES, doing just that; indulging in wet refrains and bland melodies to their soggy hearts’ content. The results are a little odd at times but his acoustic-driven, slightly cheesy tunes are heartfelt enough. www.myspace.com/driven2zenith With a nod to Aqualung, Damian Rice and the gang, Coventry lonesome troubadour, STYLUSBOY, aka Steve Jones, dishes out similarly fragile, acoustic fare that covers all, plaintive, emotional bases. His debut EP, ‘Fingerprint’, is available now via iTunes etc. www.myspace.com/stylusboy South Wales trio EJECT PILOT EJECT take it back to the late ‘70s with a sprightly sound that manages to capture the scuzzy innocence of The Buzzcocks and Jilted John with a faintly pre-punk New York aura. The Leeds-based band’s debut demo (all up on Myspace) straddles the line between Dananananaykroyd-esque, shoutalong new wave and herkyjerky spoken word that invokes the spectre of ‘90s upstarts, EMF, and flash-in-the-pans, Electric Six. www.myspace.com/ bearfootbeware LAST GENTLEMEN are a couple of Cornish lads now based in London. While our 16-year-old heroine is swept off her feet by a raffish middle-class cad, the screenplay makes deft and sometimes damning observations about life in post-war Britain. It’s all rendered with a witty, literate script, spot-on characterisation and an outsider’s directorial eye for the dottiness of English life. Irresistible stuff!
