I’m so happy to have double Brit Award nominee, Paloma Faith, gracing the cover of 247 Magazine and can’t we wait to see her live at Plymouth Pavilions later this month. Read what the singer/ songwriter had to say on her new album, personal lyrics and being a feminist on page 8. Of course we’ve got lots of homegrown talent crammed into the issue too – this month we introduce you to Panda, Plymouth based DJs with an Infectious nu-garage sound, page 11, and Audible 1, aka Alex Norgate, who has a unique take on drum and bass, page 13. This month’s fashion pages also have a distinctive local flavor too, as all the clothes are designed and modeled by the South West’s Alice Vandy, page 17. We get our action sport fix from Somerset – in the form of fearless street rider, Sam Baskett, who can clear truly amazing gaps on his BMX, page 15. Illustration by Dawn Sims Dawn Sims is a 30-year-old freelance Artist and Illustrator based in Plymouth. Inspiration comes to her in many forms: people, animals, curls, spirals, symmetry, rainbows, textures, dreams, nature, toys, life and death and love. Dawn likes spontaneity and whim to be a big part of her process as she finds it helps the work to take on its own character. She tells us this constantly evolving creative journey has also made her a bit more versatile as an artist, learning to use so many different techniques. Talking about the piece we see here she says: “This piece is based around the things that can negatively affect the formation of our characters or personalities as children, by our teen years we can feel almost as if we are drowned and our life being sunken and static but then in adulthood, finding strength and self awareness to know these things and finding ways to overcome these things. I guess it is about the realisation that life is sink or swim.”

PJP Band Limited Double-Vinyl of Debut Album for South West Fans Only PJP Band are set to release their long-awaited debut album ‘And So It Goes’ officially on May 1. However, from the March 11, as a special thank you to their local fans, PJP Band will be releasing a very early pre-releaseDouble-12” Vinyl (2 x 45 rpm, 180 gram platters) of the album in a quality gatefold sleeve. This vinyl version will only be available in the South-West with a limited run of 250 copies. The 13-track double-vinyl will include live favourites ‘Karm & Condition’, ‘I am a Racer’ and ‘Sweet Tokyo’. Each record will include a download code also, to enable fans to download a digital version of ‘And So It Goes’ once it is officially released on May 1. ‘And So It Goes’ is a very South West affair. The Launceston-born and now Plymouth-based PJP Band recorded the debut with Producer Pete Miles (The King Blues, Sonic Boom 6, We Are The Ocean, Dry The River) near Totnes. Also featured on the album are Plymouth’s Blues guitar maestro Vince Lee, Becca Langsford and composer and brass wonderkind Simon Dobson. The PJP Band will be playing a set of local live dates to celebrate the vinyl release – dates still to be confirmed. TCAT all set for the big laughs Big laughs will soon be on the bill at Tiverton Community Arts Theatre, with the announcement that Tiverton's popular comedy club has signed up to use the theatre from 2013. Comedy Hall will run eleven monthly shows at TCAT, and was previously based at the New Hall, operated by Tiverton Town Council. TCAT is known for great plays, music, dance and adding comedy to the mix should really put the venue on the map. Julian Morgan, Chairman of TCAT, said: "The increasing popularity of Comedy Hall together with a growing awareness of TCAT, Tiverton’s newest and largest performance venue, means that together we can accommodate bigger audiences and higher profile acts in our well-equipped theatre. The first Comedy Hall show of the year will be on February 4 with a line-up yet to be confirmed at time of going to press. Tickets can be booked in advance for £10 at www.comedyhall.co.uk.

Talent show comes to Plymouth Fast forward to the summer and September 14 will see a talent show being held in a huge marquee on Plymouth Hoe, with the first prize being all expenses paid trip to Richmond to record at State of the Ark Recording Studio in Richmond, Surrey – Liam Gallagher has just recorded his album there. The talent show is held to raise awareness of The Chemotherapy Outreach Project, which helps people to receive chemo treatment nearer their homes instead of having to trek to Plymouth. Organiser Jan Britten, married to musician and Grammy winner Terry Britten, who owns the studio and is organising the show said: “We have a home in East Portlemouth and from there it takes at least an hour to get to Derriford for treatment, now most people in the South west, form of treatment allowing, can be treated in either Liskeard, Tavistock or Kingsbridge Hospitals.” Interested? Double Brit Award nominee, Paloma Faith, heads to Plymouth Pavilions this month – 247’s Rachael D'Cruze catches up with the singer/ songwriter beforehand and talk writing a second album to be proud of, personal lyrics and being a feminist Where are you and what are you up to at the moment? I’m at home, in London and about to go off on my tour in a week. I’ve just had a Brit nomination and I was on Jonathan Ross yesterday, so I feel a bit like I’ve been through the minced meat mixer. What’s the response to your second album, ‘Picking Up The Pieces’ been like? It’s been really good, I’m really pleased. With my second album I decided to be honest and write something I could be proud of, not what others wanted. It’s great knowing that I’ve been myself and people like it better than the first album. I’ve been nominated for Best Album and Best Female in The Brits. The album is lyrically both very personal and powerful – do you ever feel exposed by your work? I do, but it is ubiquitous enough for people not to know exactly what its about. It’s when you start doing interviews that you have to be diplomatic. Are the songs on the new album all about the same relationship, or different periods in your life? Different relationships. In the album I’m referencing three different relationships and a couple of family ones too. My favourite song on the album is Just Be, with the lyrics like “There's no one else I'd rather be unhappy with” is it difficult to perform live? No because I’m not with the person anymore. It is quite sad, but I’d actually say it’s more realistic than sad. Other songs make me more emotional, like Streets Of Glory.

Talking of performing live we can’t wait to see you at Plymouth Pavilions next month – I think you’ve left the tour exactly the right amount of time to let the crowd learn the lyrics. Do you enjoy people singing your songs back to you? Yes, I love it. The outfits you wear on stage are just fab – do you have lots of fun putting them together? Yes, I’ve always dressed up since my late teens and experimented with clothes myself, so it comes naturally. You promote a really healthy body image for young women and are a good role model – do you ever think about this responsibility? No, not really. I’m just always myself, so if that happens as a result – great – but I’m not doing it on purpose. How important do you think being a feminist is in 2013? As important as it always has been: VERY. It’s important to be aware and confident about being a woman. I’ve always felt I’m an equal to men. I’ve bot experience any prejudice in the music industry, maybe because I project a lot of strength. I hope I empower others. I know you used to be a magician’s assistant – tell us about how you've swapped this life for the one you have now? I always had multiple jobs at the same time. I tried to enjoy them, but saw them as getting the rent paid. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. My music took off before anything else and was a great platform for everything else I’d been doing – cabaret, performance art work and theatre – alongside my ‘rent’ jobs.

Introducing…Panda No, not the Asia- dwelling mammals, these are musical Pandas, and their infectious nu-garage sound has been making waves for some time now. 247’s Stephanie Broad catches up with Charlie; DJ, and Benny; vocalist in Plymouth So what have we caught you in the middle of today? (Charlie) We’re at Benny’s house in Plymouth, planning our third DJ gig in London. It’s really busy at the moment, but we’re getting about three tracks out a week, which is great. Sounds hectic! What has 2013 been like so far? We’ve been getting loads of new music out there, and even remixes of other artist’s tracks. We’ve been approached by Alt-J and Temper Trap! The focus of Panda though, is to share our music for free. It’s all available on Soundcloud- we’re all about the giveaways! That’s really important these days, with so much contention around downloading music for free, rather than paying for it. Totally, we want to get our music out to as many people as possible, so we want to give it away- we’re even working on releasing an actual record- on vinyl! Wow – a physical record you can hold – instead of a digital copy you don’t actually own? That’s exactly it. We want to promote music from Devon and Cornwall, where we’re all from, and move it up and out there. Is that how you met – all being from the South West? (Charlie) We’ve been together since about October, but we’ve known each other for years from college and being on the DJ scene- Benny and Callum went to college together, so we’re from similar backgrounds. Benny’s from Plymouth and I’m from Exeter.
It is. There’s not a lot of our kind of sound in the South West, so it’s a good vibe when we know people down here and we’ve been playing for years. We’re getting a regular night in the town in Exeter, which is cool! It’s going to be in conjunction with the shop (Benny runs Minerva streetwear shop) so we’re planning on lots of giveaways. Are there any artists that have inspired your sound or your ethics? We’re inspired mainly by other garage artists, and the guys that are supporting our shows- Kidnap Kid, T Williams, they’re real South West talent that we want to spend this year growing with. There’s been a huge rise in hype – every time we’re in the studio, it’s different. Will these collaborations be the main focus of the rest of the year for Panda? Yeah, this year’s about developing new music for free, finding South West talent and getting it out there. We’re producing and remixing other music, and also trying to work with a label- we have 3 labels trying to sign our track ‘Girl’ at the moment! The vinyl thing is on our list toothere’s still a demand for records and we want to use it. As well as your studio time, where can fans catch you this year? We’re doing our first event in Cornwall this month, which is at The Stannary in Falmouth on February 22. Then from March 24 we’ll be doing a monthly night at Bang Bang in Plymouth, and later in the year a DJ set at the Masked Ball in Porthleven. In the summer we’ll be hitting some festivals like Boardmasters, so there’s a big live-show element to this year for us.

How do you manage working so closely together? (Benny) We all have something to bring to the table, which is the main thing – Charlie does lyrics, Callum produces and is a studio whiz kid, and Benny does the vocals. We’re all DJs so we’re all able to pitch in.

That’s a lot of studio time. It must be a great feeling playing to the South West where you’re locals?
What a busy year! Finally, I have to ask…Why ‘Panda’? (Laughs) There’s really no story behind it – no real meaning! We were all having a drink and trying to come up with a name, and started coming up with random words. We didn’t want a typical MC type name so when someone said ‘Panda’ it just kind of stuck. It’s worked for our branding too as our logo is black and white.

Audible 1

Alex Norgate isn’t a name that you may be familiar with but, if you’ve got ears, like your drum and bass with a splash of positivity thrown in, and want your music home grown, then get listening to his alter ego - Audible 1. A Devonian through and through, Alex is keen to let the South West influence not only his music but also the way he makes it. He says: “the relaxed way of life has most certainly given me the time to explore lots of avenues musically. It’s quite amazing just how much talent there is here in the South West which has been good for me because, I really enjoy making a variety of music”.

Alex’s mix of musical genres is a reflection on his variety of skills, which include beatboxing, MCing, and producing. Being able to dip into all of these skills gives Alex a different perspective on making records, “I love them all but I would say it’s producing that I love most. There is nothing better, for me, than being in the studio with a blank canvas. When you finally get a sound you're happy with, and hearing another musician or vocalist create some spine-tingling melodies to compliment it, it is the icing on the cake”. Alex’s sound is primarily drum and bass, with a sprinkling of high energy, feel good vocals laid over the beats. A perfect example of this is his latest single, Stranger, which features Eva Lazarus. The video for the song draws on talent from the South West too, filmed by Tim Crawlet and Aodh Breathnach who are both from Bristol, and breakdancing from the South West Bboy crew Just 4 Funk. Of the next singles to be released, Alex says: “You can expect high energy DnB, complimented with tasty vocals. I am really excited because I’m going to be releasing a track with one of my all time favourite vocalists, Nina Miranda from Smoke City. Not to mention the other extremely talented musicians and singers from the South West”. The music is the culmination of seven years of hard work, “in this time I have really experimented with many styles and genres, developing my skills as a producer and musician. I feel this has helped me progress enormously and I am incorporating these styles in to the music I am currently making”. Coming from a hip hop background and moving into the DnB sound could have been a risky move for Alex, but he describes the feedback as “very positive and encouraging”. Alongside producing his own singles, Alex also works with longtime collaborator Carpetface, and together they take their live hip hop show around the world. The show features beatboxing, rhymes, scratching and percussion, continually drawing enthusiastic and dedicated crowds. The pair have collaborated with Parisian DJ Suspect, and their joint record, E.V.E.R.Y.B.O.D.Y is available on vinyl worldwide (and digitally from the usual suspects). As half of Carpetface & Audible1, the duo has done over 1,000 live shows and radio appearances. Together they have toured overseas 16 times and have taken their brand of modern hip hop to the USA, Asia, Africa and Europe. In fact, at the time of this interview, Alex is enjoying the French Alps ahead of a series of gigs there.

Touring, whether individually or with Carpetface, takes Alex away from his beloved Exeter home. Coming back to the west country is a time for Alex to relax and plan for the next project. “It’s certainly nice to be still for a while from a travelling perspective. To be honest I don’t play as much in the South West as I would like. The DnB scene seems to have stayed strong ever since the beginning and I’m going to be focusing a lot more on that this year. So you never know there might be a few more gigs popping up around in the South West”.

Are you entering any competitions this year? No, I’ve never entered a comp in my life. I can’t do it, - I ride at little BMX jams etc., not to compete, just to have fun with everyone else. I’m not a comp rider at all. I like filming at these jams/comps though, and watching all the rad people.
Meet the fearless 25-year-old street rider from Somerset, who loves to clear epic gaps and has his own line in BMX pegs
What would you most like to achieve in BMXing? I think I’ve achieved everything I’ve wanted, plus more than I expected. BMX for me was always a passion, I have never cared what others think of my riding. I know certain people look at my riding, and shake their heads, wondering why I do it, and why I don’t follow the cool tricks trend. I just love it, and that is that.
You’re a street rider – can you explain what that is please? Well, even though I do ride skate parks etc., street is what I’m more into. It’s based on riding around on the streets, hunting for obstacles to do different things on, I really like my gaps so I’m forever looking up when out hunting.
Any pet peeves you want to share? Scooter kids drive me mad, I am always taking them out at the parks. They have no clue on what is going on. My main pet hate is people trying to tell me to do certain things, I’ll always only do what I want to do. I’m stubborn in my ways, and no, I won’t play B.I.K.E (laughs) – kids ask all the time…
You’re pretty damn good at it too – can you please tell us about your biggest achievement to date and who your sponsors are please? I’m good at the bravery side of things, anything else I’m just a typical rider. Over the years as bikes got stronger and I had money to pay for broken parts, the bigger gaps and drops started to happen. I’m currently riding for bmx-shop.com who’re amazing, they sort me out with quality bike parts and keep my bike dialed. When it comes to achievements, I had a Ridebmxuk magazine cover once upon a time but I would say, having a crazy amount of people riding my homemade pegs would be my proudest moment, its cool as hell turning up to different places, and seeing people rocking my pegs. How big is the scene in the UK, and more specifically the South West? I would say It's really big, but I don’t travel enough to find out how other scenes around the UK roll. I know the South West scene has always been crazy – there are certain faces who’ve been shredding ever since I started, which is awesome to see. Taunton is my local scene, and its full of amazing BMX characters. What impact has the sport had on your life and what pushes you to keep going? It’s always been a obsession. It’s ruined my body over the years, and ruined my relationships at times, but its what I do and who I am. I’m glad I never fully gave up – I knew deep down it would never happen. I have no regrets on everything I have done in BMX. Well, maybe some of the crazy slams, but they are always going to happen, you’ve got to take the good with the bad. Seeing all the local riders who are still shredding and are older than me, pushes me to keep doing it. Nowadays I rest up a lot more than I used to, I try not to do stupid stuff at skate parks, save it for the long list of gaps etc. I have planned. What constitutes a perfect street ride / setup for you? Massive gap, with a football fields worth of run up. Pedal full throttle, and hold on tight. That will always be my perfect setup. I’m guessing you listen to music while you ride – who’s on your iPod at the moment? Yea, when I’m doing big gaps and drops, music really helps me get motivated to do the crazy stuff. AC/DC, Wu Tang, Black Sabbath, ADTR, The Used and Fleetwood Mac for when I’m chilling around the park.
Tell us about your video work? I love filming and editing, always have. I taught myself how to operate a camera and use editing equipment – no college rubbish for me. I’m not brilliant, but I get the job done, and people seem happy with the edits I have put out over the years and the DVD I made a few years ago. There’s plenty more to come, that’s for sure Tell us more about your line in pegs? Yes, as I said before, it’s my proudest moment in BMX – making my own pegs has worked out perfect. All my friends ride them, as well as a lot of riders from around the country and beyond. It’s what I’m known for really - Baskett Pegs! They once featured in the product page in Ridebmxuk – awesome. What would you say to readers who fancy getting into BMX? Try not to get caught up in all the bitching that happens in BMX. I have had my fair share of fall outs with various riders over the years, and its best to just turn your head, do your own thing and keep on keeping on – wise words once told to me by Sean Burns. The best thing to do when starting out riding is get a good bunch of mates together. You will always need decent friends to ride with when starting out. I have always had amazing riders to shred with over the years, couldn’t thank them enough. Where can we see videos of you riding / watch videos you have made? There’s nothing more romantic than Italian food, so with Valentines Day around the corner we road test three great restaurants Exeter

I have a bit of an in-built aversion to chain restaurants and will generally try to find an independent alternative where possible. This said, I make an exception when it comes to Carluccio’s. What it lacks in terms of uniqueness – there are nearly 70 peppered across the UK – is more than made up for through reliably excellent service, high quality ingredients and light-handed work in the kitchen. The Exeter restaurant has spacious interior, all very clean and well lit. It’s also well worth checking out their deli which stocks all manner of Italian goodies. For my starter I went for Bruschetta – tons of lovely fresh tomatoes and some choice leaves, served on not too garlicky toast. This is one of the options available on the extremely decent fixed price menu, a real bargain at £9.95 for two courses or £13.45 for three. For the main course we took advantage of another good deal: the tasting trio of pasta dishes for two at £19.95. We opted for Linguine al Frutti di Mare, Lasagne and Penne alla Luganica. The Luganica, although it was tasty, failed to dazzle. In contrast the seafood Linguine was delicious, offering a delicate taste of the sea with a light chilli kick. The Lasagne was rich and deeply satisfying, thoroughly trouncing any of my home efforts .We finished up our meal with the Torte di Limone. I would describe the virtues of this delicious lemon tart at length, but then they might sell out before I get there next!
Very centrally located and extremely accessible, this is a friendly family-run restaurant which serves up extremely high quality Italian food with freshly made pasta and tasty pasta sauce to die for. Veneziana makes you feel relaxed with its cosy interior, which is also quite arty in a fun way and quite intimate. The pasta dishes are very reasonably priced with a fantastic range which includes many vegetarian options, all for under £8. The complimentary bread and butter with olives went down very well, as did the starter, Italian style calamari: deep fried with sweet chilli and served on a bed of green salad with garlic mayonnaise. At the very top of the pasta section of the menu (and quite rightly so), we find the king or queen of all pasta dishes: spaghetti with meatballs. It’s a classic pasta dish and at Veneziana they really do it justice. It’s quite possibly the freshest pasta and the tastiest pasta sauce I’ve tasted. The meatballs are flavoured with rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper and cooked to perfection: soft and tender, almost melting in the mouth. And the tomato sauce is cooked with Italian herbs such as basil and parsley which sounds simple or obvious, but it’s certainly effective and tasty as can be. The pasta and the meatballs soak up the flavour of the sauce very nicely. My fellow dinner, a vegetarian, opted for tortellini, stuffed with spinach and ricotta, served in a rich tomato and mushroom sauce and was equally impressed. Veneziana is relatively new in town, with its high quality food, comfortable surroundings and friendly service, I’ll be back.
I’d never visited a Prezzo before. I haven’t a pretentious aversion to chain restaurants, I just always seem more drawn to independents. So maybe I have? Anyway, I’m the one who has missed out as Prezzo surpassed my expectations by a long shot. I visited the restaurant on a Friday evening and it was busy with a mixed bunch – from students to couples trying to patch up marriages with the aid of pizza. The clean and contemporary interior was both welcoming and relaxing. After ‘the world’s best olives’ (which really were delicious) recommended by our friendly waiter, I had Mozzarella cheese deepfried in breadcrumbs served with pomodoro sauce to start (£5.20) – decadent and delicious. This set the tone for my main, ‘Zilli Meat V.I.P Pizza, created by celebrity chef Aldo Zilli - salami milano, calabrese sausage, salsiccia picanti, pepperoni, prosciutto, roquito chilli peppers, fresh rocket, mozzarella and tomato on a perfect thin and crispy base, served on a rustic chopping board. It cost 12.95, was worth every penny and easily enough for two. If you like Italian meat, you’ll really like this tasty pizza as the meat is top quality and the topping more than generous. Not a bad word to say. I was stuffed beyond belief, but want to try a dessert so I opted for one of Prezzo’s mini options – a little dessert, served with a hot drink. I had the vanilla cheesecake topped with fresh raspberries and raspberry coulis, which was just the right size to satisfy a sweet tooth - creamy, crunchy and comforting – a nice end to a great meal. Impressive.

Waiting For Something To Happen (Bella Union) Hot on the heels of last year’s debut album, London’s Veronica Falls return with a brilliant second. Why is it brilliant? Roxanne Clifford’s voice has character. Listen to the recent single Teenage, which tugs at the heartstrings, whilst simultaneously kicking your arse. Then they do the same again with Broken Toy. Guitars jangle and floor toms pound, and they party like it’s 1987. Like their USA label mates (from Slumberland Records), Veronica Falls are a young band with a keen ear for reviving the old-school indie sound, nodding to classic bands such as The Shop Assistants. But this isn’t just plagiarism: it’s the sound that fits. It works, and it’s fluent. And it’s great.
Plantman
Whispering Trees (Arlen Records) Plantman is Matt Randall, formerly of Beatglider, together with Adam Radmall and Bryan Styles. The first few songs are similar to Bella Union artists such as last year’s bright hope, Father John Misty, or John Grant. It’s a slow and melancholy start to the album, but title track picks up the tempo, and later on in the album, Crackles suggests that they may well have been listening to the third album by The Velvet Underground. One thing for sure is that they’re pretty consistent in maintaining a warmth that resonates throughout the album. And they make no secret of their love of Durruti Column, going as far as naming one of their songs after their main-man, Vini.
The House of Love The House of Love (Cherry Red Records)
Before Oasis, Creation Records’ brightest hope was The House of Love, but they never got their commercial breakthrough. At that time, their label was a small independent, with a budget more suited for creating cult classics rather than megastars. After making this here debut album, they signed to a major label, expectations ran high and they lost the magic of their early records. And then The Stone Roses came along and stole their crown. This 3-disc boxset is actually their entire Creation Records output (’87-’88) remastered, including a disc of nonalbum singles and their b-sides. Christine, Shine On and Destroy the Heart sound as good today as ever. And the songs have definitely benefited from the remastering process.

The Pictish Trail Secret Soundz Vol.2 (Fence)
The opening track of this album would not be out of place on a 70s cop show, and why the hell not? Johnny Lynch, aka Pictish Trail, has a cache of different styles up his sleeve, many of which are showcased here. There's the soothing vocal joy that is 'Earthy Pleasure', the distant Flaming Lips-esque sounds of 'The Waves', a slow burner which builds into a catchy dance floor-friendly crescendo - a multi-layered song full of youth and beauty; there's the twee, Hefner-style balladry of 'The Handstand Crowd' and the Beta Band vibes of 'Michael Rocket'. Where many albums tail off towards the end, this one just gets better - with final track 'Long In The Tooth' proving the overall highlight - stark guitar and Grandaddy quality sounds.
Villagers Awayland (Domino)
That Conor sure has got a unique turn of phrase, employing ye olde English/Yoda-speak to give his lyrics an air of authority/mystery. This is apparent from the very beginning of this well-received album from Ireland's finest nu-folk troupe. Here we have a more mature sounding folk, traditional storytelling dragged into 2013 with some experimental sounds. Conor's crystal clear vocals shine through, though it's much more compelling when sung, rather than spoken. The modern twist goes so far that 'Judgement Call' could easily be a choreographerfriendly, Cheryl Cole pop song. The title track would not be out of place on Noah and the Whale's brilliant second album. 'Grateful Song' seals the deal, with a slice of Arcade Fire grandeur.
Caitlin Rose The Stand In (Names Records)
A lively start to Caitlin Rose's second album, which instantly lifts it above her debut. With hints of Ryan Adams, the album, while containing a myriad of different sounds, works perfectly as a whole. The country twang and tender vocals of 'I Was Cruel' combines with great finger-picking and poignant lyrics to create an almost perfect song. She ups her vocal game in 'Waitin', with its motown vibes, keeping the pace up with 'Only A Clown', which combines the rockiness of a Tom Petty number with the beauty of KD Lang's finest work. 'Pink Champagne' is a classic sounding, slower ballad, which proves one of the highlights of the album, along with overall winner, 'Golden Boy'.
Jah Wobble & Keith Levene
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
You can’t help but wonder what Public Image Ltd’s comeback would have been like, if John Lydon had included the band’s original bassist, Jah Wobble and guitarist, Keith Levene. But seeing as he didn’t, the two old mates teamed up to tour their old band’s classic album, the groundbreaking Metal Box. After that they recorded an album of new original material, and Yin & Yang is it. Followers of Wobble through the years won’t be disappointed: his trademark heavy bass is stamped all over this. And Levene’s meandering guitar lines blend in and out, against the dubbed out, often industrial soundscapes. The standout track, Understand features the vocals of Nathan Maverick, who joined them on the Metal Box tour.
The sneak preview of this album involved the release of the opening and best track 'We No Who U R', is a lush, dreamy 'No More Shall We Part' era ballad. 'Wide Lovely Eyes' seems slow and broken in comparison. A water theme runs deep in Cave's repertoire, with Warren Ellis' impeccable strings taking the limelight in 'Water's Edge', paving the way for some frantic 'Betty Coltrane' style vocals, words spat with such vigour you have to wipe your face. The follow up single 'Jubilee Street' is another winner, harnessing a compelling melancholy and proving the perfect introduction to the 'Mermaids' tearjerker. 'We Real Cool' uses a continual dark, brooding beat as a backbone to wonderfully layered strings, keys and vocals, beaten only by the final title track, slow, atmospheric blinder.

Micall Parknsun is in a strange place. To me and most hip hop heads he's a legend but to anyone outside he's pretty much unknown, and that is such a shame. This is his second album, the first was well received and had some decent tunes on it, I Don't Wanna Stay Here was my favourite. The beats are quality and he produced them himself which is rare nowadays but for me it's his flow that shines, conscious non bling rhymes and absolutely always on point. If you've neglected hip hop recently then this is the one to come back to, if you have been paying attention then I'm sure this on your list. If not, it should be.

Land of 1000 Chances Piecelock 70 There was a time in the music industry when the amount of money spent pushing an artist depending on how big they believed he could be, there was also a time when they threw huge amounts of money at promotional material to compensate for an artist's musical ability, ask your parents who Halo James was, exactly. So when I get a alternative leather bound, foil stamped custom record with an individual polaroid on the front I know it could go two ways. Thankfully this album is worth every penny spent making this work of art exactly that. A downbeat masterpiece that takes you away to long drives across country, sunsets on the beach or just sat in your room headphones on and taking in every small intricate, beautifully mastered detail.
Deekline & Ed Solo Bounce n Shake Rat records
These guys need no introduction surely, two of the best producers of crowd-pleasing dance party classics and I'm not talking about Jive Bunny. For a good few years these guys have been filling both mine and many other DJs boxes with surefire killers, some may have even infringed on the odd copyright or two. Big classic like Dawn Penn's "No No No" and the Inner Circle classic "Bad Boys". They made up for that now by getting stuff re sung and re made, this double album is packed full of drum n bass, breaks, dub step booty bounce and more, featuring guests from the likes of Top Cat, Tenor Fly and the ever on point Darrison, this album will not open up a newly named genre, I'm sure it won't win awards for ground breaking but this is absolutely guaranteed to get the party started.

Ground Level presents Playground Ground Level records A compilation of artists presented by the Ground Level label and to be honest not one I know a lot about, that could be down to my ever-increasing age and lack of time or it might be that these cheeky fellows have been slipping under the radar. The styles represented are quite diverse but all proper club sounds and punchy as hell, and with more than one a decent dose of hooks to keep the casual punter happy. Highlights for me are the likes of Rebel Sketchy "Up and Down" and Joe C "Sound Off", this is pretty much the very opposite of the Deekline and Ed Solo album and I mean that as a statement rather than a dig at either album, if Deekline and Ed get the party started these guys come in later after a proper pre-sesh and takes thing up a level and make it filthier. www.247magazine.co.uk

ESBEN & THE WITCH
Wash The Sins Not Only The Face Matador Post-gothic etherealism has been Esben & The Witch's stock in trade since the Brighton trio first popped up on the radar with 'Violet Cries'. Their sophomore offering is carved from the same block: mournful, free-floating vocals and wafts of percussive electronics that leave you pondering on the meta-physical. But 'Wash The Sins...' has a clear remit: to capture the unfurling moods of the day. It kind of works. Opener, 'Iceland Spar' rouses the senses, 'Deathwaltz' flutters and haunts, while 'Putting Down The Prey' chills to the bone. Granted, it's not the cheeriest of days, and you do get the feeling that the metaphor is an afterthought, but it still puts Esben in pole position for the dark-pop throne.
BAD RELIGION True North Epitaph
I used to adore Bad Religion. As a muso, 'No Control' changed the way that I wrote songs. As a fan, their uber-melodic punk rock and anarcho intellect left me gob-smacked. But here they are, 50 year-old men, writing cookie-cutter alt. songs called 'Fuck You' and retreading old ground like, well, Bad Religion never happened. It's not a dismal record by any stretch, it just brings nothing to the table that they didn't deliver, with far more believable righteousness, 25 years ago. That isn't punk rock. That's recycling. Greg Graffin and Co are clearly hoping to cash in on the sound that they pioneered by repeating it until we're all reminded of that fact. Bills to pay, I guess.
BLOCKHEADS This World is Dead Relapse
Most certainly not to be confused with Ian Dury's erstwhile backing band, these French grind merchants cough up 25 chunks of sonic phlegm with enough acidic content to melt through all your prejudices and preconceptions. Sure, Napalm Death and Carcass may have beaten them to it by three decades but this kind of relentless, lightning-fast aural terrorism still manages to draw me in even if you can't quite make out whether the intense slow-blast of 'Pro-Lifers' falls on the side of pro-choice. Given the context, I'm sure it does. 'Born Among Bastards' and 'Crisis Is Killing The Weak', on the other hand, set out the band's anarcho-simpatico stall in no uncertain terms. Uncompromising and horribly enjoyable.
YO LA TENGO Fade Matador
"Sometimes the bad guys come out on top / Sometimes the good guys lose" - and so begins our journey into YLT's new installment of arcane, lovingly rendered indie-soulgazing, with a not inconsiderable hint of defeatism. The soporific nature of 'Fade' doesn't make for much of a grand spectacle, especially when they turn introspection into a time-lapse trundle (to wit 'Well You Better'). But there are many moments of sonic lucidity. 'Stupid Things' is a bracing affair with its lolling, Jew's harp-imbued motorik and 'I'll Be Around' confidently rides the David Pajo wave of postAmericana. Elsewhere, you'll find delicate melodies, unforced vocals and Mid-West twang in communal harmony. No ground-breaking magnum opus here but a gentle, emotional lift nonetheless. www.247magazine.co.uk

It's heartening to know that ex-Dharma Bum, Johnny Powell, is still teetering on the edge of troubled genius with this new clutch of soulscraping, larynx-wobbling freak-folk vignettes. 'The Difficulties Of...' was recorded on the moorlands above Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, which certainly captured Powell's perma-frown in all its icy fragility. And if you're thinking this all sounds a bit Bon Iver, you're right. Existential desperation informs the likes of 'A Supernatural Carnival Of Demons' and the none-more-elegiac 'It's Playtime!' to the point where, if it wasn't for a need to hear the album's fateful denouement, you'd think there was no reason to carry on. For fans of Mount Eerie, The Mountain Goats and melancholic instability.

Bristol neo-folkies, The Minke Whales, are onto a winner with their emotionally naked tales of love, languor and left-leaning philosophising. The quintet may utilise banjos, strumalongs and hoedown sensibilities but when Scottish exile, Stuart Reid, lets his songwriting nous take centre stage, especially on the brilliant 'Witch Hunt', the result is a unique take on old-time music tropes blessed with weight, depth and sublime melodies. And when Reid's cracked voice meets fellow vocalist, Elle Ashwell's plaintive croon, another layer of bittersweet joy is unfurled. Meanwhile, the likes of 'The Devil' and 'Scrap' opt for a junkyard-country stomp, with an eastern European kick, that still aims for the heart as much as the hips. Resourceful and quite wonderful stuff.
THE HEAVY HEARTED www.facebook.com/ TheHeavyHearted Featuring Lande Hekt from Muncie Girls and Ben Cottam from OK Pilot, this Exeter duo ease off the volume and replace it with a benign '90s indie-pop sensibility that falls somewhere between The Evens and Juliana Hatfield. Lande's unmistakeable voice lends all four songs an understated charm that works as a smart counterbalance to her output with MG. Best of the bunch, 'The Heavy Hearted', allows the choppy post-punk rhythms and keen melodies to soar above confidently reigned-in guitar tones; while 'All Over' embellishes its indignant refrain with piano. In keeping things simple and seductive, and with a knowing sense of lo-fi pop history, THH have carved out a positive little niche that should serve them well.
BRUNEL
No contact details as yet Plymouth newbies, Brunel, bolt out of the starting blocks on a mission to recreate the heady days of '90s post-punk as championed by the likes of Drive Like Jehu and Jesus Lizard. With an energised and unleashed James MacGregor at the helm, the band snarl with style, riff with righteousness and seem to be thoroughly relishing the experience. It's great, visceral, off-kilter stuff. 'High Speed Death' is a keen example of howling, skewered rock'n'roll; 'Hot Toddy' doffs its cap to Dischord luminaries, Bluetip; 'Beaver Sticks' packs a garage punch with echoes of Shitty Limits' nihilist groove; and 'Real Housewives' is a lurching, dissonant delight. Dynamically involved, melodically elliptic, fucking awesome. I is on-board, Brunel.

Chris Dynasty No Bass Wasted Gearbox Digital
Australia's Chris Dynasty has a knack for producing really clever grooves that are hard to place in either the techno and the hard trance world yet manage to cross both boundaries nicely. That's why I like playing his material, well that and the obvious fact that it rocks and has some major power in the basslines. With a title as bold as 'No Bass Wasted', this would be one really disappointing release if it lacked any bottom end, but it's there in full force and works well, especially with some excellent synth work and fierce percussion on top! Can't really complain, can you as Plymouth's very own Side E-Fect is on remix duties too. Forthcoming on Scotland's Gearbox Digital imprint.
Kraemer + Niereich Brett Nachtstrom Schallplatten
This label can do no wrong in my eyes at the moment, and with recent releases from Octave, DJ Hi Shock and Stigmata all finding a place in my record box. It was a welcome surprise to see a double vinyl from Germany's Andreas Kraemer and Peter Niereich as well. I have a slight bias towards Kraemer releases in general ever since his wonderful hard trance productions years ago, not forgetting all the amazing tracks he has released on Construct Rhythm over the years too. However, bias aside, the whole album really does add something serious to your DJ sets, with '5 AM' and the 2012 mix of 'Leitwolf' being the stand out tracks, find this before it sells out!
Hideo Kobayashi Was It A Dream Apt International
This is as hypnotic as you can get, and that's never a bad thing as Japan's Hideo has delivered tracks that I have seen erupt on many a dance floor when played out (just take a look at his wicked 'Snow Monkeys' release for proof!). When dark, effected vocals are repeated over a building synth groove that gets more intense every few seconds, you know you are set for something very special, before the title track drops into some delicious additional layers of percussion. Flip over for 'ZX1200-A1', and listeners are treated to a chugging groove with some very haunting melodies contained within. For setting the mood of the night both tracks are perfect and are definitely worth hunting down.
Brent Sadowick Montana Horizon
With a name like 'Montana' it shouldn't take long before images of Tony Montana and Scarface start running through your mind. And with that, Canada's very own tech legend Brent Sadowick has produced a rip roaring remake of Giorgio Moroder's Scarface Theme. This caused massive uproar when it first touched down and now returns with a seriously kicking, and strong techno influenced rework from Holland's Thilo & Evanti (definitely two of the biggest producers of the last year!). Their production finesse is ever present here with punchy kicks, supreme LFO tweaked melodies and drive. This one really did the damage on Boxing Day when played at Premonition with the only drawback being I wish it was a touch shorter.

Not content with wreaking havoc on internet terrorists in Die Hard 4.0, Bruce Willis returns as the vested action hero for another adventure. This time though he’s brought his son, Jack, along for the ride. Jack gets himself into trouble with the Moscow underworld and guess what McClane senior muscles in to sort it out and accidently finds himself embroiled in a battle to stop a nuclear weapon going off. Hopefully, the end result will be to die for, but don’t bet your favourite mucky vest on it!

Dir: The Wachowski Brothers Starring: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant 2012/US/172 min This splintered narrative is difficult to explain as it involves so many characters. The film look at how individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. The Wachowski Brothers are experts at converting cerebral material (The Matrix) into box office gold and I hope this won’t be an exception.
Dir: Sacha Gervasi Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson 2012/US/98 min In another Oscar-bothering film Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of director Alfred Hitchcock… The Master of Suspense. Hitch is preparing to film ‘Psycho’ with his long-suffering wife, Alma, in toe. Their relationship is plagued by the director’s obsession with his blonde leading ladies and his anal retentive tendencies. When Alma is offered the opportunity to work on a project of her own this stretches their relationship further. An interesting subject matter and a fine performance from Hopkins should make this a worthwhile evening’s entertainment.

She begins a quest to return the ashes to its rightful resting place, and places herself in danger because a team of assassins is after them as well. Chop-socky fun by the bucket load and if you can find a cinema screening it you’ll have an entertaining time.
134 min Dir: Judd Apatow Starring: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann and Maude Apatow 2012/US/134 min Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as the duelling couple from Knocked Up in this spinoff comedy. They play Pete and Debbie whose suburban dream is slowly turning into a nightmare. Their kids are a chore rather than a pleasure and despite trying to lose weight and eat less they end up lying to each other about their efforts to get fit. Really looking forward to this funny look at mid-life couple struggling with the everyday grind.

Charlie Brooker is funnier on telly than in print; 2. And he's a couple years younger than me; 3. Heating is now a luxury thanks to insulting price hikes that leave energy companies making huge profits while we shiver into our Ultra-Lemsips; 4. Women's liberation is an internationalist struggle that can only be triumphant once countries including Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Burma have stopped treating women like no-class citizens; 5. I can't survive this loathsome world without external pharmaceutical impetus therefore my destiny is to become something far less wholesome or successful than I could ever have hoped for. Happy New Year! Rewind to the tail-end of last year, my bandmates and I were touring across western Europe and the UK almost solidly for five weeks. Tough work. Which means that, other than tales of our Euro tour buddies, Apologies I Have None's boy-next-door, punk rock earnestness; charming if misguided support bands; horribly drunken bacchanalia; temporarily missing pets; and the occasional mind-expanding drive through the Alps, there are precious few things to report back on that will be of any interest to you. So this column is going to be pretty atypical, and not as formulaic as the past, ooh, 110 or so columns that I've written for this rag. Which may come as a relief to most readers who couldn't bear yet another month of me talking about how my friends' bands are better than your friends' bands. So let's talk, instead, about the Future Of Music in light of the recently announced huge losses in global CD sales and the imminent last gasp of HMV. Or, let's not. CDs still make up around 70% of music sales. No big deal. Yet. And HMV have never seemed interested in music beyond selling it. So, apart from the huge job losses, who gives a shit about them? Maybe now's the time to get yourself acquainted with your local indie record store (Plymouth readers, check out Last Shop Standing in the bus station) if you want to buy physical product, minus the insultingly lofty mark-up. Ultimately, music will always get made and we will always listen. That'll never change, no matter how much the shifting of analog/ digital means, media and modes. And if you really care more about the technology you're listening to music on than the songs themselves, spare a thought for audiophiles in the 1920s who had to listen to 78rpm records on gramophones, two minutes at a time tops. Bet you didn't hear them complaining about how they missed the old wax cylinder phonographs of the 1880s. Having said all that, here's the worrisome thing: I think I listened to less new music in 2012 than I have any other year since my age hit double figures. At the same time, all music – commercial, underground, DIY, specialist, avant-garde, experimental, international – has never been more readily available to listen to, buy, download, copy, swap and stream, all day and all night long, thanks to the internet's ever-expanding reach. I believe that a combination of three things is happening here: 1. music is, to paraphrase Milan Kundera in The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, perishing in overproduction, in an avalanche of words, in the madness of quantity (and this was written way before the worldwideweb ever existed); 2. most new music isn't very inspiring; and 3. I'm getting old and losing touch. It's worrying because this also goes hand-in-hand with my urge to tut at groups of teenagers even when they're not being rowdy, and a flagging libido that no amount of New Girl repeats can resolve. WIN: TICKETS TO PLEASURE PRINCIPLE A new music weekender forged by the ongoing friendship between Glasgow based dance night Numbers and Dedbeat Festival launches in Newquay, Cornwall 26-28 April. Pleasure Principle is set to be ‘the’ electronic weekender of 2013. Following along the lines of the original Dedbeat Festival, which ran from 2001 to 2004 at a holiday park in Norfolk and was a consistent sell-out, with appearances from legendary underground names such as Aphex Twin and Madlib, the intention for Dedbeat was always to return in a new form, but with the same music standards and since the sad demise of BLOC, the time seemed right in 2013. Speaking on their intentions for Pleasure Principle, Numbers have said: This weekend is all about combining music and the life-affirming pleasure of escaping the daily grind.
