Rinse-It! The South West’s longest running Drum and Bass night, Rinseout, has become so big it has outgrown most of the venues in Exeter. However, the organisers are adamant not to forget their roots, staying close to those early parties that started the following Rinseout has today. To achieve this, Rinseout has launched a sister-brand, Rinse-It, to encapsulate those intimate vibes that could only be achieved in smaller venues. Rinse-It kicked things off in Torquay, with two sell out shows in the Attic consecutively and are now planning to follow these up with a summer show in Plymouth’s all new waterside venue H2O. Rinse-It will also be returning to Torquay for a limited number of sell out shows. Expect the basic principals of Rinseout, but on a smaller scale with quality DJs, sound and production being the core values. Keep updated with Rinse-It’s latest events at www.rinse-it.com

Iconic hip hop trio De La Soul are set to play at Electric Beach Festival later this month, 247’s Rachael D’Cruze catches up with the rap legends before they leave Long Island for our South West shores… The organisers at Electric Beach festival have got it spot on securing you to headline! What made massive legends such as yourselves agree to play a festival in its first year?

well as Bob Marley’s “One Love” will... songs like “Me Myself & Eye” & “Eye Know” or “Say No Go” as well as “Saturdays” etc. are those type of songs, with that timeless attachment.

We love performing for the people who appreciate our music. We don’t pay attention to the status of the festival. You’ll be spinning your own DJ set at the funky Chy Bar in Newquay till the early hours after your set too, where Jurassic 5’s Akil is also going to be playing a live set – are you into intimate venues? Yes! You will be able to see all faces and gain a great vibe from everyone in the room. We’re so chuffed you’re coming to Watergate Bay, one of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches, what do you Long Islanders think of the South West of England? It isn’t like we get to come there all the time, so when we can it’s all love and to catch the vibe of the people and the place is very important to us. Lots of our readers and indeed the crowd at Electric Beach won’t have been around for your epic debut album 3 feet high and rising, but they’ll all have heard it – how does it feel not only to have shaped hip-hop, but to have produced music that’s still relevant today? It’s an amazing feeling to know what we had in our head and hearts when we were 18 is still relevant today and that’s how we always prefer to put together music. PE’s “Fight The Power” will always make sense in whoever’s present as

Everyone from Mos Def to The Black Eyed Peas cite you as an inspiration – who do you look up to and who are you looking forward to see play at Electric Beach? Too many to name but Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Slick Rick, NWA and the list could go and go on! As far as the festival we are down to see and learn from everyone. You guys have a massive back catalogue – how do you decide what songs to perform live and do you always play the big crowd pleasers like Me, Myself & Eye? It depends where we are as far as the country, town, venue... all of it matters. Someone coming to a small venue may be true fans who know more that the ‘hits’. Festivals may have a lot more people who may know only a few of our albums and may be there to see other artists, so we think of the right songs to hook them in. We loved De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 presents... First Serve , that you released few months back, but we are wondering what’s happened to Plug 3: Maseo?

and put together a great album. They went and got a distribution deal for the project and the company distributing the project thought for marketing reasons putting “plug 1 & plug 2 presents” would bring more attention to the project instead of putting “DJ Chokalate & DJ Khalid presents”..... So, De La Soul is still together and we are working on projects to release very soon, but the first serve project was simply a project 2 members were asked to be apart of. It was not a project two members of De La Soul decided to do with out a 3rd member. Your plethora of nicknames and creative wordplay and innovative sampling seem to have kept you young in our minds – is having fun with music your secret to eternal youth and longevity? Not at all. Loving life and staying away from stress is key to that, but having fun and loving what we do for a living does play a big part in how we present music to you. Lastly, after all this time, is three still the magic number? Always!

Maseo is still intact with us. The first serve project was presented to us by the DJ’s/ producing team named DJ Choklate & DJ Khalid from Paris. They loved De La Soul & wanted the vocalist of De La Soul to be apart of the project they were putting together. We (plug 2 & myself) accepted

Grab your chance to see Iconic hip hop trio De La Soul at the first ever Electric Beach Festival at Newquay’s Watergate Bay, on Saturday July 28. To buy tickets online and for more information see www.electricbeachfestival.co.uk.

Yes Sir Boss We catch up with Josh and Matty from genre crunching Yes Sir Boss, the first band signed to Joss Stone’s label

Yes Sir Boss’ sound is a delicious, eclectic cocktail of different genres. They’ve a distinct and indefinable sound expect horn-led hooks, offbeat rhythms and epic riffs combined with catchy lyrics with are immortalized by the husky vocals of front man Matt Sellors. His voice is sex on a stick. “Our sound was defined by the instrumentation we have and the sounds we are interested in. We’re essentially a rock band with horns and we never set out to be anything definable. This is why our music is such a cocktail. However, we do like to use themes throughout our songs. We are all interested in cinematic, western style sounds such as tremolo guitars, whistling or trumpets drenched in reverb. We also use instruments like Glockenspiels and Melodicas, which have a childish Tim Burtenesk feeling. It’s all been organic though, we not really trying to sound like anything,” says frontman Matt. Although the band now live in Bristol, they met further down south, at Dartington University in South Devon. “We quickly becoming friends and began playing music together and low and behold Yes Sir Boss emerged from the melting pot that was Dartington Uni,” says Matt, who tells

us the name, Yes Sir Boss, was a final evolution from the original three piece band named Sellors and the Scientists. “After graduation we decided to pursue the band further and move to Bristol and change to a unified band name that is Yes Sir Boss. We nicked the name from our signature track Not Guilty that was originally called Yes Sir Boss! We loved how punchy and memorable and most importantly cheeky/ sarcastic the name was because we would use ‘Yes Sir Boss’ to rip on another band mate for being to bossy change the ‘Boss’ to whoever’s name it was in question!” So, how did they signed to Stone’d records? “We were driving to some gig in the arse end of nowhere. We were hopelessly lost and I tried to call the promoter but ended up calling Joss [Stone] by mistake. She asked us to support her at a gig in Amsterdam and we did. I guess that’s where our professional relationship began. After she’d sacked off EMI and conceived Stone’d Records she approached us and asked if we wanted to be her first signing, and we did!”. Indeed, before signing with Stone’d records Yes Sir Boss had already enjoyed considerable organic success, playing alongside the likes of Gomez and Toots and The Maytals and becoming one of Bristol’s headline bands. Their upbeat, catching and generally moreish debut EP ‘Desperation State’ was released last month. Speaking about it Matt says: “It’s a real mixture. Some of those tracks were written in the early days and some wrote last year especially

for the album. They all got a reworking with the help of our producer Stevie Greenwell who really helped us breakdown, rework and improve our sound – basically the guy is a pro at getting you to see for yourself what you can do to improve your sound and express our potential. So, I guess this EP is really a summary of all we are: old and new.” “Matt writes all the lyrics bar a couple of the songs on the album by myself and Potter. I think all lyricists aim to write infectious memorable lyrics because if you have something to say you want them to be heard, easily understood, digested and remembered by your listener then hopefully sung back to you at gigs!” says Josh who agrees with us that Matt’s voice is sublime; “Matt’s voice was a massive part of why I wanted to join the band. It’s unique and very striking. It’s also just another quirky ingredient to add to the list!” Lastly, we asked Matt and Josh what we can expect of Yes Sir Boss’ shows in the South West this month. “Good clean family fun! Expect a loud energetic passionate performance, we’re a big band with big personalities having fun doing what we love. People always say they feel nourished and euphoric after our gigs, that’s gotta be good right?! In the crowd you’ll see some dancing, sometimes some moshing and plenty of singing along.” We are game.

MODESTEP This summer, rock and dubstep fans alike will be welcoming the long-awaited release of ‘Evolution Theory’, the debut album from electronic rock trailblazers Modestep. But first, the London-based quartet will be bringing their action-packed live show to the South West. 247’s Rob Sleigh caught up with the band to find out more… music in the South West and the proper way to eat a cream tea

In just a couple of short years, Modestep have gone from being Dance Chart hitmakers with their first few singles to becoming rock festival heroes at some of the summer’s biggest music events. Now, after a relatively long wait, the crossover band are finally readying their first full-length release with the album ‘Evolution Theory’. The London fourpiece, led by brothers Josh and Tony Friend, admit that the fans aren’t the only ones looking forward to the new offering. “It’s a really exciting time for us now,” say the band. “We can’t wait to release the album and continue collaborating with other artists.” Modestep admit that for fans of early singles like ‘Feel Good’ and ‘Sunlight’, there may be a few surprises in store on the album: “It’s an eclectic mix of what we’ve grown up on. There’s a mix of dubstep and drum’n’bass, as well as some songs with no synths. We think it’s a lot more rock-based than people are expecting. It’s a lot different to the singles.” In previous years, rock music fans around the country may have turned their noses up at the kinds of sounds that have inspired Modestep and many of their peers, but now it would seem that’s a thing of the past. Thanks to the likes of Pendulum and The Prodigy, the way has been paved for Modestep to cross the boundary between dancefloor and moshpit to create a seamless blend of genre-defying music. However, the group add that even influences like Slipknot, Pantera and Pink Floyd have had a big part to play in their sound: “That’s the way we see music developing in the future. We see dance music using live instruments as a great thing for the music and the fans.” After finding their early sound on the DJ circuit a number of years ago, Josh and Tony eventually joined forces with Modestep are: Josh Friend – Vocals Tony Friend – Turntables Nick Tsang – Guitar Matt Curtis – Drums

drummer Matt Curtis and guitarist Nick Tsang to get the band to where they are now: “Matt and Nick bring the rock and Tony brings the electronic sounds. It started out as a bit of fun and we haven’t looked back.” With Josh fronting the band on vocals, Modestep have managed to create a live rock show that has seen them support Lost Prophets on tour and even headline a stage at Download Festival: “It’s given us an insight into the rock scene. We were surprised how well our tunes went down in front of the Lost Prophets fans. They were really welcoming.” Following a few weeks trekking around Europe and making a couple of short stops across the pond, Modestep are returning to their home turf this month with a few shows around the UK. For one of their first dates back, the band will be making their debut in this corner of the country by bringing their highly acclaimed live show to the Phoenix. The fourpiece admit that they’re looking forward to finally introducing themselves to their South West fans: “This will be our first time in Exeter, so we’re excited to see how you guys party.” Anyone hoping to join Modestep at their upcoming gig will be pleased to hear that the band promise “high energy, live instruments, mosh pits and loads of bass.” So with a new album, a host of festival slots and a trek around the globe already lined up for the next few months, what’s next on the agenda for Modestep? “Tour the album, then get back into the studio for a second. Then maybe ‘I’m a Celeb’!” See Modestep live, along with a load of other great acts, at Relentless Boardmasters, August 8 – 12, Newquay – see www.boardmasters.co.uk for full lineup and tickets. Also catch Modestep at Exeter Phoenix on Fri July 13. Visit www.modestep.com. The album ‘Evolution Theory’ is due for release on August 27.

“I absolutely love North Devon and there is nowhere better than home” www.247magazine.co.uk

Want to find out what Sophie gets up to? Then follow her blog at www.sophielouisehellyer.com Interested in surfing? Then why not have a look at learning to master the waves yourself, see www.surfsouthwest.co.uk

Hailing from Westward Ho!, Sophie Hellyer is respected as one of the UK’s most talented young surfers. 247’s Luke Ford finds out how surfing has changed and shaped her life... With a family bursting with surfing prestige it would have been hard for Sophie Hellyer not to get drawn in. When her sister won the British nationals at 15, Sophie was just 13 and spending a year with her dad kitted out with wetsuit and board, braving the British weather learning to master the waves. A good start. Sophie won the British school nationals and after winning the English school nationals managed to get a couple of sponsors and that was that, she was hooked. Now 10 years later it is hard for her to remember life before surfing. When asked what she gets out of surfing she says “It’s kinda unexplainable. The friends, the lifestyle, the challenge, the satisfaction, the way it can completely alter my mood, it can relax me if I’m stressed, clear my mind, it can energise me if I’m tired, make me happy when I’m down.” I hasn’t always been a smooth run for Sophie though. A few years back she got a lung infection from inhaling some dirty seawater, which completely ruled her out of surfing for a month and required an operation to repair the damage. That aside, she hasn’t encountered much trouble out in the water, only suffering from the occasional reef cut. The lure of tropical waves is strong and Sophie is lucky enough to travel the world on various surfing trips. We asked how does surfing in Devon compare with surfing elsewhere around the world: “I absolutely love North Devon and there is nowhere better than home,” she says earnestly. She does admit she wishes the waves and weather were more consistent in the South West though: “I went to Costa Rica with my sponsor, Cushe, a couple months back and it was amazing to get out of English winter for a bit: surfing in a bikini everyday in perfect waves - it was heaven.”

www.247magazine.co.uk

So where is best to surf in the South West then? Sophie says that her favourite place to surf in the South West is Croyde, not too far from her hometown of Westward Ho!, where the powerful waves and friendly faces make it a fun beach for her to surf at. It’s not all about surfing though; Sophie is also a Football fanatic, playing three times a week for both mixed and ladies football teams. Its also another method to keep fit during the winter months whilst the weather and waves restrict her from surfing at home. So, what else is the surfing prodigy currently up to? Well she says she is focusing on her studies at the moment, and upholding a placement at the museum of British surfing in Braunton. She still manages to get a necessary surf session in before her working day begins though. Whilst now not focusing on competing, she has been spending her time travelling with her sponsors around the world. To date she has been to 25 different countries, but she still has a lot more to visit. She takes pride in surfing and loves the fact that she is able to surf everyday. What else would she like to achieve? It’s quite simple really: she wants to surf, travel and always have a smile on her face. Her next voyage is a cold-water trip, which could lead her to the waters of Canada. Cushe Footwear Ambassador Sophie has also just been confirmed as having her own signature shoe in Cushe’s Spring/Summer 13 collection. It’s a surfy slip on shoe aptly named the Cushe Slipper Hellyer – look out for it in a surf shop near you...

Food

Eat local, taste global

Above: Moroccan dinning at Exeter’s Al Farid restaurant

Exeter

Falmouth

Plymouth

Al Farid

Amanzi

Crystal Dragon

Situated just off Exeter’s Cathedral Green Al Farid is a Moroccan restaurant offering a distinct contrast to the traditional tea rooms and English eateries abound in this historic quarter of the city.

Amazi opened it’s doors on Falmouth’s bustling high street last month and is the most exciting new eatery to come to the town in some time – local Cornish food with an African twist no less. We visited the day the restaurant opened to the public (excited much?) and far from the paint still being wet, it was a den of tranquillity with classy décor and polite, attentive staff.

I’d often walked past the House That Jack Built arcade, inhaled the smells from Crystal Dragon and reminded myself to check it sometime, but never did until this visit. To reach the restaurant you climb a kwirky spiral staircase and are greeted by polite staff. The interior is a fairly standard affair for a mid-market Chinese restaurant – slight cramped, chintzy with traditional touches. I liked their goldfish.

3 Cathedral Yard, Exeter 01392 494444

Having been open for 12 years it recently changed hands and has consequently received a bit of a makeover – both in terms of décor and menu. Despite this the vibe is still most definitely ‘authentic’ with moody lantern lighting (to be honest a little too moody for me) and draped ceilings. There are two seating options: you can either sit upstairs at fairly standard tables and chairs or downstairs on an array of low seating and floor cushions. Unless hampered by a dodgy back I would urge you towards the latter in order to sample the full Arabic dining experience. For starter my guest and I went for a selection of mezzes, the highlight of which was the insanely moreish chicken pastille – filo pastry wrapped chicken delicately flavoured with cinnamon, turmeric and cumin. For main I opted for the slow braised lamb shank, presented piping hot in a traditional earthenware tagine and possessing great depth of flavour. My dining partner had the lamb and beef keftas, served in a tomato sauce, the light-handed spicing of which miraculously managed not to overwhelm the meatballs subtle flavour. We followed our meal with some thick and highly spiced Moroccan coffee – not for the faint hearted! The service was great – fast, friendly and accommodating. Nick Emerson

38 Arwenack Street, Falmouth, Cornwall 01326 312678 /www.amanzirestaurant.co.uk

We’d missed the bargainoius lunch deal, where you get two courses for £10, so ordered from the evening menu instead. I opted for the Singapore chili crab, £18, which consisted of two (yes, two) whole crabs in a soy, chili, ginger and garlic sauce with crusty bread – it’s not a dainty meal to eat with all the de-shelling but it was absolutely delicious. The fresh crab was succulent and the flavours enhanced, rather than overpowered by the sauce. My friend ordered the trio of sautéed locally caught fresh fish, £18, with a lemon butter sauce and new potatoes – which again was a large portion and insanely fresh tasting. For me, local food cooked in an African style was so much more agreeable than the food I’d eaten in Africa – a compliment to the house and also a relief for me! For desert I had a Vanilla crème brûlée, £5.95, which was rich, delicious and indulgent – perfect. The drinks list was extensive and the staff were happy to advise me on a white wine to compliment my crab. Not a particularly cheap eat in the evening, but well worth the money – we’ll be back.

10-11 Southside Street, City of Plymouth, Plymouth, Devon / 01752 250288

The menu is an extensive, yet predicable affair. My fellow diner and I decided to go for a set menu for two, £16 per person – which worked out cheaper, if you wanted to try a few dishes. First up was our crispy shredded duck – lots of lovely duck, spring onion and cucumber, but only four little pancakes – very odd, but tasty none the less. Our main courses, delivered to the table at the same time, and filling it, were King prawns with chill, sweet and sour battered chicken and beef in black bean sauce, special fried rice and prawn crackers. A lot of food for two, and it terms of quantity good value. In terms of quality, I wasn’t blown away – it simply tasted like an average Chinese takeaway, rather than a restaurant quality meal. This was disappointing as I had high hopes for the Crystal Dragon, although there was nothing wrong with the food, it just didn’t blow me away. Rebecca Joynson

Hot Chip

In Our Heads (Domino) You may have a preconceived idea of Hot Chip, I know I certainly did. A few years ago, there wasn’t an indie disco in the land who wasn’t beaming out the electro tactic ready for the floor. It was great, but this album is even greater. An instantly compelling collection of Pet Shop Boys-flavoured numbers, with each track getting even better with every listen. There aren’t many albums which warrant a whole day’s worth of listening nowadays, but this one totes does. It’s less quirky and a lot more solid than some of their older material and you can even hear some Beach Boys brilliance in there. Lush.

Neil Young Americana (Reprise)

In my eyes, Mr Young can do no wrong. Since seeing him absolutely smash it at Glastonbury 2009, I slowly but surely stocked up my ‘Y’ shelf with the entire back catalogue form this Canadian legend. Hells I even liked Reactor, which had it not been created by young would be a terrible terrible album. Like Springsteen with his Seeger sessions, this album sees Young embrace the more traditional American country sound (not, as the name suggests, the Fleet Foxes school of alt country) and unsurprisingly, he does it exceptionally well. Opening track ‘Oh Susannah’ is a definite highlight with the catchy line: “Cos I come from Alabama with a b.a.n.j.o on my knee” spat in that unmistakable Young twang. Love it.

David Bowie Ziggy Stardust (40th Anniversary Edition) (EMI) You gotta love reissues. If you’ve got an actual CD collection (rather than some virtual bollox) then chances are there’s a fair few dusty numbers in their (and I don’t mean Dusty Springfield). It’s all too easy to forget the older classics as you make way for a wealth of new music...and that’s where these reissues come in. They remind you just how brilliant the old favourites were and while the original pressing of this album is often available for less than a fiver, it’s well worth splashing out on this edition - which has crisp sounding remastered versions of all the great songs, including ‘Five Years’, ‘Starman’ and ‘Suffragette City’.

Poppy Perezz We Are yours (Beach Hut Records)

Colourful Bristolian troupe Poppy Perezz have been making a name for themselves in the city, tipped as one of the best live bands in town, they’ve been on the lips of musicians of all genres. I’m yet to see them live but jumped at the chance to check out their album. I had high hopes and sadly, they weren’t entirely lived up to. The album contains catchy riffs and cute vocals but often sounds very busy, which can be messy in places, but then just what do you expect from an ‘electro-latinpower-pop-band’ (their words, not mine)? And even The Flaming Lips fall into that trap, occasionally. Think the Cuban Brothers meets Still Flyin’ and while they’re in that camp, they likely fall into the camp of groups who are better live than on record.

Various Artists Bass Culture Volume 1: Ska & Rocksteady (Nascent) Also titled This Town Is Too Hot, this is part one of a brand new reggae compilation series, exploring the history of Jamaican music. Before there was reggae or dub, there was ska, and these are original 60s recordings by the key players, the likes of Prince Buster, The Paragons, The Techniques and Upsetters. Like the other volumes in the series, it features forty tracks on two discs, with extensive notes by Lloyd Bradley, the author of the excellent Bass Culture: When Reggae Was King. The tracks here seem to have been given a good clean, considering the original sound quality of the times was not great, and the bass sound was yet to become a prominent characteristic in the Jamaican sound.

Various Artists Bass Culture Volume 2: Early Reggae (Nascent) Part 2 is also called Boss Sounds, and it concentrates on the time after ska and rocksteady gave way to a new sound called reggae, in 1968. All volumes of this compilation series feature plenty of less obvious tracks (like Dave Barker & Tommy McCook’s Funky Funky Reggae on this set), sprinkled with a few classics (Toots & the Maytals’ Pressure Drop). This means that if you’ve been collecting reggae compilations on labels such as Trojan or Soul Jazz, you won‘t end up with tracks you already have. Bob Marley’s here too, again with a less obvious choice: You Don’t Do That To Me. And tearjerkers like Alton Ellis’ Breaking Up provide a contrast to the more danceable choices.

Various Artists Bass Culture Volume 3: Roots, Rockers, DJ & Dub (Nascent) Also titled When Reggae Was King, this set picks up the story from 1970 to 1980, when the bass sound took centre stage, with plenty of conscious lyrics to boot. Musically, it does what it says on the sleeve. And the “DJ” in this volume’s title actually means to MC, best displayed by Dillnger on Natty Kung Fu and Big Youth’s Love We A Deal With. And on the roots/rocker side, check out Dennis Brown on disc 2, with the brilliant Deliverance Will Come. More genius cuts from Gregory Isaacs and Burning Spear, and Sugar Minott’s People Got to Know will send a shiver down your spine, if you have any heart at all.

Various Artists Bass Culture Volume 4: The Birth of Dancehall (Nascent) Also called Mash You Down, this is the golden age of dancehall, from its beginnings as it grew out of roots, and before the digital rhythms and basslines took over. Disc 1 opens with Black Uhuru’s gorgeous Shine Eye Gal, and disc 2 kicks off with my favourite voice in dancehall, the talented Yellowman with Mr Chin. The sleeve notes that accompany this series explain the political and cultural climates that influenced the records and the artists, so all of these volumes are historically relevant as well as musically. For those with a casual interest in reggae and ska, this series is a fantastic place to start, and for more serious fans, the selections are essential.

The Apples Fly On It Audio Montage

The Apples are probably most famous for their outstanding funk cover of Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing In The Name Of”, which is still a staple amongst a lot of djs to this day. This album doesn’t include any clever covers and is just the Apples to full on assault mode, it is however chock full of funky breaks, some killer drums and some well chosen cuts and scratches. If funk is your thing then this is well up there as one of the best I’ve heard for quite some time. Who knew Israel could be this funky.

Otto Von Schirach “Supermeng” Monkeytown Records

I met this guy once at a party, friend of a good friend, she said “oh you have to meet him, he’s just so cool and knows like, everything, about music”, so I get introduced and frankly stuck with him the whole night while he talked at me non stop about everything from krautrock to hip hop, religion, racism, healthy eating, travelling. Pretty much everything he said either annoyed me or was the opposite of what I believed, the undercurrent of all he said was basically “check me out, i’m so painfully hip”. He would love this album. I didn’t. You might, if you like forward facing music that is challenging, genre jumping and rapped and sung ironically.

The Bamboos Medicine Man Tru Thoughts records

You wait ages for a modern funk album then two come along at once, though saying that is slightly misleading in the case of the Bamboos, yes they are a modern funk band, but they have such a stellar line up of vocalists and the songs are so strong that this album’s appeal is just as likely to be hip hop heads or just lovers of classy albums. Aloe Blacc features on the first single and sits so well along side voice of a goddess Kylie Auldist and Megan Washington. The main guy behind the Bamboos is Lance Ferguson who is a massively talented uber producer, if you dig this then check out his other aliases.

Riz MC

Mic roscope Tru Thoughhts Records There is something uniquely british about Riz Mc, equally there is a very british part of me that wants to hate on him for being so darn successful at so many things, that’s what we do, when someone is struggling we love them, the moment they seem to break through we tell people their earlier work was better or we preferred them when they played to 6 people in the back of a pub. Some of you might know him better for lead role in Four Lions and the new Plan b film but Riz Mc first got on my radar due to his music, a cheeky song called 9/11 blues. This album shows a more grown up and no less incisive mc that deserves a bigger audience.

Music Backbone

Milk Maid

Mostly No (FatCat)

They like to mix it up, do Manchester nu-gazers, Milk Maid. Stealing their overloaded guitar tones from such disparate, and mainly West Coast, sources as The Beach Boys, 13th Floor Elevators, Neil Young, Ride and The Jesus & Mary Chain, album number two, ‘Mostly No’ is, on the surface, a summery, So-Cal slice of retro that takes psyche-pop to its giddy heights. But a darker underbelly is clear for all to see in miserabilist lyrical themes (‘Bad Luck’, ‘Summertime’) and a creeping sense of doom. Which is, of course, the making of all great music. If you’ve been missing that hall reverbsoaked, acid-fried noise of the psychedelic shoegaze set, dust off your floppy fringe and frug on in. Udderly fantastic.

Baroness

Yellow & Green (Relapse) When a modern rock band as immense, inspiring and independent as Baroness make a new record, you can bet your bottom dollar that a lot of people will get a lot pissed off by the tiniest of changes. But ‘Yellow & Green’ isn’t a stylistic shift, it’s a total re-invention. Gone is the Baizley roar, gone is the Southern sludge riffola and gone is the hardcore undertow. Instead we have studied vocal harmonies, alt rock dynamics and Muse-y sonic conceits like ‘March To The Sea’. There are still a few familiar touchstones - tight duelling guitars, introspective American folk passages - but you have to keep reminding yourself at every turn that this is Baroness. Prepare for the backlash!

Skinny Lister Forge & Flagon (Sunday Best)

Don’t mention The Pogues. No, seriously. Don’t. Skinny Lister’s tepidly benign rendition of traditional English music doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as folk-punk’s greatest protagonists. Shane MagGowan wrote beautiful, shit-stained poetry and spat it out with all the biliousness and heart of a true London Irish anti-hero. The grittiest that Skinny Lister can muster is a polite paean to Deptford - ‘If The Gaff Don’t Let us Down’ - that smacks of middle class complacency. The band sound far more convincing on ‘Peregrine Fly’ where they rein in the revelry and allow Lorna Thomas’ buttercup croon to take centre stage. Ultimately, this is folk music viewed through Ye Olde Tea Shoppe specs. The jig’s up.

Tragedy

Darker Days Ahead (self-release) I’m old enough to remember Discharge and Amebix first time round: pre-crust punk rock bands whose dark and dangerous music held a morbid fascination for lots of us who were tired of the cliche-punk of The Exploited et al. For kids growing up on Tragedy, I should imagine the attraction is the same, only today’s budding anarchos get to sidestep the nasty production values of old and delve into ‘Darker Days Ahead’’s monstrous low-end sonic assault. The D-beat is all but erased here, but there’s enough grimly focussed power and black beauty on ‘Close At Hand’ and ‘The Grim Infinite’ to fuel a nihilist nightmare for a decade. And who wouldn’t want to revel in that kind of fun?

www.247magazine.co.uk

Louk

This Calamity

www.thiscalamity.co.uk Martyn Crocker has been patiently nurturing his solo venture, This Calamity, over the past couple years and, with the help of some competent muso pals, seems to be well and truly on the right path. There’s a pungent aroma of post-emo soul-searching on new mini-album, ‘I’ll Paint You A Picture If You Promise To Put It Up’, but Crocker is comfortable with his honest, earnest form of expressivity. And so he should be. Self-recorded, mostly self-played and seemingly self-referential, ‘Bottle Rocket’, ‘In Need Of An Exit Strategy’ and ‘Broken Lips’ are lovingly detailed, layered acoustic songs glazed with an experimental sheen, reminiscent of Circa Survive - a clear influence on TC’s oeuvre. Dramatic and direct.

Centrefolds

www.facebook.com/ centrefoldsmusic Bristol chipper choppers, Centrefolds, opt for that ‘edgy’, synth-imbued new wave shuffle as perfected by We Are Scientists et al but they do it in a way that doesn’t instil much belief, and ultimately leaves you feeling a bit cold. Their new EP ‘Release The Hounds’ is full of songs that might impress the shallow, callow hipster set in some trendy over-priced North London dungeon bar but here in the real world it all sounds a bit affected and meaningless. Apart from ‘Alright’, which seems to show the band do have an emotional core buried under all that cosmetic fluff; and ‘In Your Blood’ has a sweet Police-esque lilt. Not bad yet not inspiring enough to warrant closer inspection.

Gouranga

www.facebook.com/ gourangamusic Bristol neo-grunge brigands, Gouranga, have a new EP ‘Nature’s Knife’ out this month and, in the main, it’s a pretty predictable, if well-meant, proposition. Opener ‘Solomon Grundy’ exposes the band’s dearth of good ideas, with a painfully over-used arsenal of riffs and slightly cringeworthy vocals that sit on the wrong side of Cobain-esque angst. They have their moments though: ‘Dinosaur Apathy’ toys with a half-decent chorus, ‘Petrol In Your Hands’ almost lives up to its sinister intent, and, pick of the crop, ‘Son Of Sam’ boasts some great light’n’shade dynamics; but the execution lets them down at almost every turn. Some substantial artistic direction, internal or external, wouldn’t go amiss, perhaps.

Nineplanfailed

www.facebook.com/nineplanfailed I like the name because it’s an old song by Adam & The Ants, before they discovered pirate makeup. The South Wales trio don’t make a bad racket either, caught somewhere between the angular new wave of late-’80s US post-punk and the art-school new wave of late-’70s UK post-punk. Punctuated by snippets of old news and film dialogue, ‘(We Are) America’ and the amazing ‘Never, Ever’ are rooted in a time of Gang Of Four guitar scree and wildly overwrought vocal delivery. It’s a fine line to walk but one that NPF seem to have just about mastered. They’ve barely played out of South Wales so we suggest that you keep your eyes peeled for imminent nationwide tour age.

Space DJz - Level 7 (Artform)

The production duo of Ben Long and Jamie Bissmire have been long-standing contributors to the techno community, and once again manage to impress under their Space DJz moniker with a release on the Bristol based (like this very magazine!) Artform imprint. Ran by Jamie Anderson in connection with Outland recordings in Amsterdam, ‘Level 7’ is a deep, dark and broody number that goes straight for the synapse on the first listen. It is meticulously funky and the production is pristine, though you would expect nothing less with this imprint. Think of Luke Slater meeting Jeff Mills on a very angry day and you are close to how wonderful this is. Straight in the box.

AKA Carl + Distek Brotherhood Of The Snake [Subcult]

This label have consistently managed to impress over the past few years, for the simple reason that even though superficially you know what you are getting before you listen, they still manage to surprise you and pull something remarkable out of the bag. With six mixes to choose from you really are spoilt for choice on ‘Brotherhood Of The Snake’ but winning the battle for me was the effort by Canada’s DJ Preach, which nags away at your subconscious before letting rip with some fierce percussion. Although this made it straight into my record box, it only just managed to overshadow the Original mix from label owner AKA Carl and Wales’ Distek, which is also worthy of a mention. Scot

(Druck)

Project - W (Whooo)

Some of Scot Project’s material of late has had a very mixed response from my peers, who wish he retained his harder roots and instead of his new softer sound, (more fool them for missing such quality, ground breaking productions). However, this one has managed to impress them all, and when the track ‘W2’ was played on the Jubilee weekend, even the most ‘hard as you like’ critics were left reeling at a production that might not be too high in the BPM stakes, but has such power and depth. Sun soaked piano riffs, some gorgeous chopped vocals, a devastating kick drum and immense bass heavy synth riffs really made this one stand out on the four track EP.

Veztax - Dekstroid (Filth Infatuated)

Slovenia continues to hold the reputation it has of providing the world with some high quality Techno exports (after already giving us the legendary UMEK and Valentino Kanzyani), in the form of another dark EP from Veztax. However instead of choosing to release in his native homeland, he has signed the tracks to the very fine Techno collective ‘Filth Infatuated’ from Bridgwater. With two of the label bosses Kev and Mark donning their ‘Naked Van Mirk’ guise for a remix, it’s actually Phil Denton’s dark and clanging mix that wins favour. These guys are continuing to push their Techno mission forward with the very interesting Collabs night in July and deserve all the support and recognition that’s coming their way. magazine | 27

‘Striking no bargains and making no promises

THE PIGEON DETECTIVES came to Plymouth (White Rabbit, 27th May) and there were a lot of dickheads to be seen swaggering about singing terrace chants and spilling drinks. I guess music that sounds so laddish will draw a matching crowd. Doing their level best not to patronise, Plymouth newbies, THE WHOA NOWS, kept their inventive indie-rock short, sharp and spiky. Like a baby hedgehog. So we invited some friends down to play the small room at the White Rabbit and they said yes (Plymouth, 29th May). First up, Exeter’s MUNCIE GIRLS, continued to illustrate why everybody is frothing at the ears over their well-crafted pop-punk homilies. Second up, London’s SLOW SCIENCE, were a revelation. All rogueish smiles and positive energy, the quartet took us back to the power-pop stomp of Superchunk but with a modern, technically savvy twist. Brilliant. One part Aus-Rotten, one part Social Distortion, London crust’n’roll trio, MORAL DILEMMA, may not register high on the melody count but they did bring the spittle-drenched fury. The first outdoor jamboree of the year, Volksfest, wasn’t exactly a paragon of modernity – Blockheads, Marky Ramone, Hard-Fi – but its heart was in the right place (Plymouth, 1st June). We had to shoot off early but not before catching a couple sonic slingers in the shape of Cornwall’s THE EYELIDS: endearing punkabilly that bathed in its awkward cadence, and Plymouth’s LAND OF THE GIANTS: tepid acousto-pop aimed squarely at the undiscerning masses. Then it was onto Crash Doubt fest (Lincoln, 2nd June): a celebration of punk and hardcore set in a corporate showroom complex. Bizarre yet bold. We arrived as Norwich punks, BROKEN WINDOW EFFECT, were blazing through some wistful indie-punk on the Time Will Tell stage, and while some shouty hardcore types were shouting on the Shouty Hardcore stage. There was a lot of that about and, for the most part, it was codswallop. But not as bad as SHARKS. I just don’t get ‘em. They’re painful to watch, even when they’re just swaggering around the venue trying their best not to fit in. But once onstage, all that aloofness is rendered obsolete by the blandest punk-lite since Young Guns. Away with you, posh boy! Thankfully, we had BANGERS to lift our spirits with a perfect balance of choppy riffage and small-town idiosyncrasy. Other bands, in a parenthesised nutshell: NO TRIGGER (fast but predictable), HEARTSOUNDS (not so fast but predictable), THE JB CONSPIRACY (is ska-punk making a resurgence?), ANTIVIGILANTE (seems so), THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS (mein host!), AS WE SINK (go on, the lads!), OUR TIME DOWN HERE (something old), THE LIBERATION SERVICE (something new), DIVIDERS (something borrowed), THE SMOKING HEARTS (something eugh!). Sadly we had to miss most of Sunday’s bands in order to go and play Strummercamp (Manchester Rugby Club, 3rd June). But there was an inkling of fun to be had from the overwrought am-dram rock of NEW MODEL ARMY and their legion of snake-armed disciples; hammy neo-metallers OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE; 73-piece folk rock ensemble BOOTSCRAPER; the blue collar acoustics of JIMMY ISLIP; STAND-OUT RIOT’s ska-core clatter; and the antiquated anarcho-techno of Jim Sorrow’s POPULATION. We got back in time to catch THE PATRICK JAMES PEARSON BAND in full, exalted, shoeless swing at Volksfest (4th June). Unfortunately, I also managed to witness RUDE TIGER and their U2-felching mood-rock. One for the faint of heart and empty of nutsac. See-ya bye.
