Contents Illustration by Mole Brown Mole Brown has been drawing and doodling and drawing ever since she can remember. This lead her to do a foundation Degree in Graphic Design and then a BA(Hons) in Illustration, at Plymouth College of Art. Mole currently lives just outside of Bodmin in Cornwall, but she’ll soon be leaving us for Denmark, where she has a job with LEGO – Boom! “I exhibited my work at New Designers in London last year and had an email from LEGO when I got home, asking me to apply for a job. I took part in a two day workshop/interview in Denmark with people from all over the world - it was ace but unfortunately I didn’t get the job. But, in February they contacted me again and asked me to do some tasks for them and I got a call from them a few weeks later offering me a job as Junior Graphic Designer,” says Mole. We don’t blame LEGO for stealing Mole – her happy illustrations would cheer up even the most miserable bugger. “I like my work to have a positive effect on people and make them smile whether it’s through a cute little critter or the colours I use,” confirms Mole, who finds inspiration in most things, and her daydreams. Bellie good! Picture a barren wasteland, devastated by a weekend of festival antics. Ripped tents flapping in the wind, and ants excavating empty cider bottles left by a materialistic, throwaway generation. Litter picker, Steffen, was appalled by the rubbish left by festival goers and decided that something needed to be done. This is where ‘Festival Reboot’ comes in… ‘Bellies‘ are new bracelets made from recycled wellies, These are a creative creation turning discarded items into cracking fashion pieces. Also in the range is ‘The Beer Bellie’ - a drinks holder that hangs by your side to allow the owner to clap at bands, dance around or just have a handy place to keep your drink. There’s also ‘The Welly Pad’ - A welly bound notepad hand stitched with hemp cord and made using recycled paper. “So what happens to the clog section?” I hear you ask. Well, for each welly product sold, 50p is used to help send thousands of welly clogs to Kenya, where they can be utilized to their full advantage for those in need: ‘Clogs For Africa’. What isn’t there to love about this?! Get yours at: www.festivalreboot.co.uk

Still Smokin’ Not only have Northern Irish rock trio Ash just turned 20, but they’re about to make their big return to the South West as part of this month’s anniversary celebrations. Ahead of the gig, 247’s Rob Sleigh chats to drummer Rick McMurray Since bursting onto Northern Ireland’s alternative rock scene exactly 20 years ago, Ash have built up the kind of rock and roll CV that most bands can only dream of. With two Number One albums, countless hit singles and a host of other impressive releases to their name, the three-piece have now reached a new milestone in their career. However, as co-founder Rick goes on to explain, the band are still far from ready to call it a day.
The sticksman explains the big secret behind the band’s longevity: “I think we’ve managed not to let the success fuck us up [Laughs]. When we first got our record deal, we didn’t just want to make a really big album, get a big advance and then bugger off. We wanted a career, not just something that we’d do for a couple years until real life took over. We wanted this to be our life.”
“It’s pretty nuts actually,” he says, looking back over the past two decades. “We were about 15 or 16 when the band started so the majority of my life has been spent with Ash, which is a bizarre thing to think about. One of the bonuses of starting so early is that we’re all still relatively young. There’s a lot left in us and we feel like we’ve still got a lot to prove.”
After finding early success with their Platinum-selling debut ‘1977’ and hit singles like ‘Girl from Mars’, the three friends soon learned that the rock and roll lifestyle wasn’t as easy as it sounded. Rick admits that the band were keen to move on for their next effort: “‘Nu Clear Sounds’ definitely broke the
Rick admits that, as the years have passed, certain experiences have left them feeling that little bit more grown-up: “It’s especially weird when you get other musicians saying they were really inspired by us. We kind of feel like we’re elder statesmen when we get told stuff like that, but I’m definitely not knocking it. Not many bands make it this far.”

mould. I think a lot of people were hoping for a ‘1977: Part Two’ – something very poppy. But we wanted it to reflect the darker place that the touring and the success had left us in.”
in Exmouth and Plymouth. I always enjoy playing in that direction. We’re really looking forward to getting out, blowing away the cobwebs and doing some rocking.”
So what did they do to cope with those difficult early stages? “Just drinking really,” Rick laughs. “Our friendships were never really tested, but it was a tricky thing to deal with. You’ve got to look back and say, did our age have anything to do with it? But at the same time, we had the energy to sort of come back from the brink. But yeah, the drink definitely did help [Laughs].”
He even offers a few hints of what to expect from the setlist: “It’s cool digging out old stuff again. Last year, when we did the Free All Angels Tour, we played a few songs that we hadn’t done in a long time. It’s really refreshing, pulling old stuff out of the bag.”
Here we are, just a few more years down the line, and Ash are getting ready for the 20th anniversary celebrations that have been lined up for this month. “It will be good to get back to Exeter,” says Rick about their upcoming date in the South West. “We were pretty close to there on the A to Z Tour in 2009, when we played
As Ash reach another milestone in their career, we ask Rick whether we can expect to be celebrating the trio’s 30th anniversary in 2022. “I’d not even thought of that!” he replies.
“I’ll be getting kind of close to 50 at that point. I just wonder if I’ll have the energy to play ‘Kung Fu’ and stuff. Who knows? As long as we still enjoy playing new music and releasing stuff, I can’t see us ever quitting. 30’s the new 20, right?” See Ash at Exeter Phoenix on Tue 5 June. Go to www.ash-official.com

The Road to NASS with
Scott Hamlin South West based BMXer, Scott Hamlin, talks to 247’s Rachael D’Cruze about being a NASS veteran, hospitalising himself at the show and taking first place at the BMX Goliath Ramp finals
How long have you been riding at NASS and what do you like most about this festy? I first went to NASS in 2007 to take part and compete. I was only 17 at the time and could usually found to be buzzing around after chugging several cans of energy drink and being loud. The weather was great and I found myself sitting on the deck with many pro riders that I had looked up to for years such as Mark Webb, Cam Hardy, and even Danial Dhers! I made so many friends at that one jam, that I still speak to most weeks till this very day. Thanks to NASS, my life with BMX was secured. You won first place in the goliath event two years ago – was that a highlight? Yeah! I had a serious crash in 2008 at NASS, that practically put me back to page one of my life - I suffered a ruined shoulder and other serious injuries that I wont go into... My friend Matt Cable and some others got me to keep riding and we had a good time just enjoying riding for a year and thought I would enter NASS in 2010, for the hell of it. Turned out that just having fun had been the key to my success and could not believe it when they called my name for first place. What a victory over my biggest crash to date. What are your signature tricks?

Well everyone knows me as the guy who started the flair over spine ramps. This is a trick that an old rider called Dennis McCoy used to try, but I don’t think he ever landed…To explain it to people, it is fairly straight forward – a backflip with a 180 degree twist inside of it, but over a ramp so you end up landing backwards and having to roll out from the backward landing, its pretty impressive and feels even better. Other than that, people just know me for the many backflip variations I can do.

The Summer according to Scott.... Grab a bag of skittles and bottle of coke at... Boardmasters festival, Newquay Worship the sun at... Fistral beach, Newquay Have a listen to… Jurassic Five, Paramore, 100 hits from the 80s and 90s and anything old and funny, like Bonnie Tyler’s I Need a Hero Get a load of… inflatable things to throw and annoy people with Catch me at… Motion Ramp Park, Bristol
You’re organising one of the Road To NASS Tour events – how did this come about?
How much of your time is devoting to BMXing and how much of your life is dedicated to it?
Since the realisation that not many sports characters go on making a living from what they do, I chose to get involved with a job within the BMX industry and ended up with an amazing job at Split Second Imports in Cheddar.
The one thing to take from this interview is that BMX has given me absolutely everything, from the love of my life and the best friends from all over the UK and to seeing the most amazing places. The lifestyle has truly allowed me to escape and see the world for what it is. My whole life is devoted to BMX: I am obsessed and literally addicted to it. I would gladly give my life for it.
There my boss taught me everything I know now about retail sales, products and how they get developed, organisation and really taught me allot about myself, and eventually I ended up with the skills I needed to work with Motion Ramp Park and gave them a call...and now here I am helping the kids to learn to ride/skate/scoot and putting on events at the park. So as I made so many friends at NASS each year and was always polite with the staff there, things just fell into place with them having a stop at our Skatepark. It’s looking to be a really good day. You seem to have have adventures in fashion, as well as BMX - you’re known for sometimes riding in a shirt and tie? [Laughs] Well, it has something to do with a phase I went through… I used to work as a deputy manager at Past Times, the Grandad shop, and I used to finish work and just go down the park still in my shirt and tie. It felt kinda good to look so sharp and it made people laugh, so I kept it up. Where are you favorite riding spots in the South West? My favorite spots In the south west truthfully are wherever my friends are, if there was just one tiny ramp but all my riders there, the session would go down. Still the most fun place to ride for me has to be Motion Ramp Park now, we always change the place to keep it interesting, we stay open extra late for the BMX riders to really let sessions get to their peak before we close and we even play basketball, volley ball over the spine ramp and drop in ramps on anything we can find, it’s a dream building for guys that ride.

Get active this summer Forget dull, repetitive workouts – now that summer’s finally here, there’s all kinds of fun ways to get fit. 247’s Emma Mould tells you where to go and what to do.
Swim on the wild side
If Mr.T were here he’d say: “You don’t need no pool, fool.” And he’d be right – living in the South West we’re in a prime spot for wild swimming. We’re talking the clear waters of secret lakes, plunging into mystical circular waterfalls and having a Jucuzzi on nature… The health benefits of a wild swim or natural dip are massive too, if you need convincing. For a comprehensive list of wild swims, complete with interactive map see www.wildswimming.co.uk We like the sound of the dappled pools in the headwaters of the River Fowey at Cornwall’s Golitha Falls and the Plunge pools cascade, one into the other, in Victorian man-made Jacuzzi on the River Teign beneath Castle Drogo.
Try coasteering
If you’re looking for a new adrenalin buzz try coasteering. What exactly is it? Moving along the intertidal zone of a rocky coastline on foot or by swimming - without boats, surfboards or other floaty devices. Adventure swimming, climbing, scrambling, canyoning, jumping and diving collide, keeping you alert and giving you a massive rush. So much more interesting than a session down the gym… Interested? Make sure you book some tuition as it’s an extreme sport that requires lots of knowledge, safety measures and equipment. See www.coasteeringdevon.com and www.coasteeringcornwall.com
Go foraging
More and more people are having a go at foraging, not only for the exercise and the nature but also, for environmental and economical reasons. It is a fully sustainable way of eating and you’d be surprised how many edible delights the wild has to offer if you know where to look. Even the most urban of places will have pockets of greenery to explore and don’t think that wild food has to stay basic – there are plenty of books and courses out there which turn wild food into gourmet dishes. Wild Walks South West offer a range of guided walks throughout the South West and for the more urbane, Andy and Dave of www.selfsufficentish.com give regular guided wild food courses around the Bristol area. Rachel Lambert also offers Forage, Cook and Dine courses around Cornwall, see www.wildwalks-southwest.co.uk And no, a trip to your local Tescos does not constitute foraging, even when its late at night and all the good pastries are gone.

On yer bike
It’s an obvious one but you can’t beat a bit of bike riding for an enjoyable and healthy day out. Ever changing scenery and terrain keep you from getting bored or focusing too much on the fact that you’re actually exercising. Despite those rather one-sided conversations you might have yelling into the wind when you’re really hitting the pedals, cycling is also a wonderfully social activity, great for bonding and impromptu picnics. There are urban bike paths throughout our pleasant green land- check out www.cycle-route.com/ for routes, both home and away For mountain bike tracks, try Gawton just outside Tavistock or the Haldon forest in Exeter- stunning surroundings and lots of opportunities for all abilities. See www.gawtongravityhub.co.uk and www.forestry.gov.uk
Sail away
Who wouldn’t want to be on a boat in the summertime? With numerous hiring possibilities, you no longer need a banker’s income or a double-barrelled name to enjoy the wide-open seas. Falmouth Bay is particularly beautiful and not too choppy and there are several companies that offer short and long term skipper hire. Cornish Blue, for example, offer a tailored service to allow you to fulfil your boating dreams and experienced skipper Richard Hall offers assisted cruising holidays where he’ll help you build up your sailing knowledge and confidence. See www.cornishbluesailing.co.uk and the cleverly named www.sailaday.co.uk It goes without saying that you’ll need to have some training before you can safely get involved on the boat- search for courses near you at www.rya.co.uk
Dive in
Keeping with the water theme, laps at the local pool really can’t compete with diving into real water and immersing yourself in that strange and beautiful parallel world. The Lizard Peninsula, located at Britain’s most southerly point, offer Gulf stream fed water and an endless amount of marine life. Take a PADI course with Kennack Diving School and get in your cardio amongst coral reefs, seals and maybe even dolphins. Then try your new skills out on a charter boot service – SouthWest diving in Plymouth organise regular small group trips for very reasonable prices. You can even try your hand at underwater photography on one of their workshops. See www.kennackdiving.co.uk and www.southwestdiving.co.uk

Go retro at a roller discos
Roller skating has been enjoying something of a renaissance lately as a heart-thumping workout disguised as a great night out. These days, you can spend a night roller skating to good music with breather sessions at the bar. In St.Ives there is Rollers Roller Disco every weekend, with specific sessions for over 18s, see www.rollersrollerdisco.co.uk. If you’re a female skater looking for something a bit more challenging and competitive, why not try joining a roller derby team? This wildly popular contact team sport has teams all over the country, most of which are still open to new members. See www.kernowrollers.co.uk and www.southwestangelsofterror.com
Rock on up
Okay, so maybe not one for those afraid of heights, but just the adrenaline rush alone would probably burn a few calories. Rock climbing isn’t just an intense workout, it also engages your brain and allows you to get close to nature. There are ample opportunities around the South West for those who are rock climbing ready, from Chedder Gorge to Haytor Rocks in Dartmoor. Check out routes for our area (and for all over the world) at www.rockclimbing.com. If you’re not quite ready to scramble up a cliff top, there are loads of indoor rock climbing facilities out there, including River Dart Park in Ashburton, which has a bouldering centre, see www.riverdart.co.uk.
www.247magazine.co.uk
Tie it together
Why not combine several of these activities on an adventure holiday somewhere in the South West? Adventure holidays are exactly what they sound like: days spent trying out a bunch of outdoor activities, perhaps for the first time. Look at it as a taster of various ways to get active; its very likely that you’ll end up finding at least one thing that you’ll want to pursue at home. Plus, its cheaper, healthier and more environmentally friendly than lying on a beach with too much time on your hands. On www.ukactivitybreaks.com, you can search for trips in the South West (or further afield of course). You’re guaranteed to collect some new experiences and you’ll also sleep like a baby…

This month we’re looking to Japan and going for sushi Above: YO! Sushi, Drake Circus Shopping Centre, Plymouth,
Truro Chantek
15 New Bridge Street, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 2AA // 01872 225071 Not living in a particularly metropolitan part of the country, if you’re looking for good sushi, you’re going to struggle.Chantek is an award winning Thai and Southeast Asian Restaurant in Truro. They have a massive array of dishes available, with Mixed Sushi as an option for a starter on both lunch and dinner menus, also available for take away. There was quite a wait for a seemingly simple dish, but even at lunchtime on an incredibly sunny day, the restaurant was relatively busy. There was no description of the sushi on the menu, and there were no variations to choose from, so I was intrigued as to what would be produced. What arrived was six pieces of what can only be described as standard miscellaneous rolled sushi, with a side of no mayo coleslaw with a parsley garnish, served with soy sauce and wasabi. On inspection the sushi seemed to consist of finely chopped carrot, cucumber, and celery, with sushi rice and sesame seeds, wrapped in nori (seaweed). Three of the six pieces contained what looked like raw tuna. As far as sushi goes it did the job. It wasn’t the best sushi I’ve ever had, but then Chantek isn’t a sushi restaurant. I am keen to return to Chantek to try the other dishes they have on offer, as the food being served to my fellow diners looked and smelt incredible, and the service was brilliant. But if you have a hankering for sushi, in Cornwall, in all honesty, you’re better off heading to the supermarket. Hannah Giles www.247magazine.co.uk
Exeter Steaks N Sushi
23/24 North Street, Exeter, EX4 3QS // 01392 250414 Steaks N Sushi is a stylish and modern Japanese restaurant, just around the corner from Exeter’s main shopping area. The restaurant specialises in what its name suggests, and it does it well. The food here is fine, just a bit pricey. The service is friendly, and they will kindly guide you through the menu, helping you to find the sushi for you. If like myself you are new to sushi, you may assume that it’s always served raw, but this is not necessarily the case. For example, what I had was the Grilled Salmon Hosomaki for a starter, which came in six pieces. The Hosomaki Sushi is also available in tuna, spicy tuna and prawn, to name a just few options. And they serve other types of sushi, including Nigri, which comes in two pieces. You can mix and match your sushi and have as much or little as you want (funds permitting), to get an all-round flavour and texture experience. One of the set meals includes two starters, with soup, sushi, a curry and rice dish as your main and ice cream to finish. After my sushi starter, I went for a chicken curry and rice, Japanese style. The sushi at Steak N Sushi is fresh and tasty, and there’s lots to choose from, with plenty of flavour. Real authentic Japanese food with superb service in a contemporary environment. A bit expensive, but that may be to do with sushi and Japanese food being at the upper end of the dining out market. Plymouth YO! Sushi
Drake Circus Shopping Centre, Plymouth, PL1 1EA // 01752 521410 Plymouth’s YO! Sushi opened just a few months ago and is the most westerly branch of this chain restaurant, which prides itself of being fast, fun and fresh. I’m happy to report it is in fact all of these things, and funky too….You can book a table at YO! But generally people just turn up. The friendly staff will show you to your table (either a booth or seat at the bar) and run you through the menu and how everything works – great for sushi virgins. Centrally, there’s the kitchen were you can see all of the food being prepared. Around this there’s a huge conveyor belt where the sushi travels round ready for you to grab whatever tickles your fancy. Of course, you can also order directly from the staff and hot dishes need to be ordered. After some moreish Edamame – where you squeeze and suck the salted, blanched soy beans from the pod, I had Crispy Duck Futomaki - shredded duck, sliced cucumber and spring onion with moromi miso sauce. Heavenly. Next up was Assorted Fish Maki – two pieces each of salmon, tuna and prawn and chive maki. These were very fresh and clean tasting. Finally, I tried the Soft Shell Crab Tempura, with crispy light batter and a lovely tempura dip that didn’t over power the crab. As well as Sushi, YO! serve soups, rice, noodles, yakitori, katsu curry, salads and desserts… Dishes at YO! are priced from £1.80 - £5 so you can try a few yummy dishes for a main meal and not break the bank. Happy days. Rachael D’Cruze magazine | 25

Beach House Bloom (Bella Union)
The fourth album by the Baltimore duo sees them further down the road to dreamy psychedelic pop perfection, with ten beautifully crafted songs. Beach House consists of Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand, who are geniuses in the art of creating soundscapes by applying echoes of sound that circle about, blending with their swoon-some singing. Although every song on the album is different, they all seem to flow into one another, from the start of the album to the end. It’s hard to imagine how they could have possibly followed 2010’s brilliant ‘Teen Dream’. But they have, and they’ve done it remarkably well. Album of the year so far, and my soundtrack for the summer.
The Human League Dare/Fascination (Virgin)
In 1981 it would have been safe to assume that The Human League’s futuristic synth-pop would have dated very quickly. But over 30 years on, this is far from the truth, and it‘s hardly surprising. Almost on a weekly basis there’s a constant stream of brand new electro-pop bands, who purposely emulate this retro sound, keeping it fresh. So here it is again: their faultless ‘Dare’ album, restored and repackaged with bonus tracks and remixes, including non-album singles ‘Fascination’ and ‘Mirror Man’. Songs like ‘Love Action’ and ‘Open Your Heart’ sound as great as ever: strong songwriting, prominent loud bass and crystal clear production have made sure of this. The future is the past.
The Dualers
Prince Buster Shakedown (Phoenix City) Having tasted a degree of chart success, UK ska band, The Dualers now pay tribute to the king of ska himself. The eight songs here are straight cover versions, performed with the same 60s feel as the Prince Buster originals, so don’t expect any radical reworks. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. What The Dualers have done is to recreate the songs with the benefits of high quality recording available in our times, whilst keeping with the traditional sound and spirit of The Prince. This album is a great way of introducing a new generation to Prince Buster, and it would be safe to assume that The Dualers are likely to rock at live shows.
Various Artists
LateNightTales Presents Music For Pleasure (Late Night Tales) No “pleasure” at all, on this grim collection by one of Groove Armada. The likes of Hall & Oats are names to be spat upon, but thanks to the spread of the “cheesy” virus, and too many people who say: “I like random shit”, they’ve found their way on the previously reputable compilation series - LateNightTales. It’s 80s dad rock with an allegedly “soulful” edge, conjuring nightmares of rolled up jacket sleeves, moustaches and grey pointed shoes. Soulful my arse! 10CC and ELO sounded knackered when they were current, and they certainly haven’t aged well. Buy this for the one you hate. Dear LNT: please get Midlake or MGMT back for your next compilation - this is fucking embarrassing.

FUN.
Some Nights (Fuelled By Ramen) With lead single ‘We Are young’ dominating the airwaves, we felt compelled to listen to this album. The first line of opening title track ‘Some Nights’ wouldn’t be outta place on a boy band album then from the interjection of the word ‘fuck’ you have a montage of some of the most eclectic sounds – from the Bohemian Rhapsody harmonies of Queen to some upbeat Ladysmith Black Mambazo sounds to sniffs of Fall Out Boy and 90s one hit wonders Catch. Inevitably, the stand out track is the aforementioned stomper of a hit single, in the same vein as Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (which they recently covered), but that doesn’t mean the rest of it aint worth a listen.
Levellers
Static on the Airwaves (OFT Recordings) Summer is always the best time to listen to Levellers. Their energetic, punk-infused folk conjures up festival scenes, running free through the land...our land, and getting tanked up on cider and dancing like a loon. Kudos to them for continuing to comment on the dire political situation we’re in, when so many bands are talking about love and their phones. ‘After The Hurricane’ and the beautiful ‘Alone In The Darkness’ showcases a much softer side, with a nod towards Seth Lakeman (worth noting this album was produced by Seth’s brother, Sean Lakeman). This, their 10th studio album, has a real maturity to it and could well mark a change in direction for the ole boys!
Jinder
Crumbs of Comfort (Mighty Village) You may not have heard of Jinder. He’s one of those quality artists with no massive label behind him, pushing him to the masses, but with talent oozing out of every pore - an acoustic singer/songwriter up there with the likes of Ryan Adams. Bizarrely, and bear with me for this one, ‘Wedding Song’ sounds a bit like what James Blunt would be if he wasn’t such a mainstream dud. The slightly shaky, husky vocals and simple but powerful songs are executed with a credibility Blunt could only dream of. You can imagine ‘Let My Love Be Your Shelter’ and the awesome Paolo Nutini-esque ‘Paper Planes’ being belted out of a massive stage at a festival – lush, catchy, head-shaking, radio-friendly ballads.
Bob Seger Ultimate Hits (Capitol)
The opening gambit of this is fighting talk: “Today’s music aint got the same soul, I like that old time rock’n’roll.” Let’s see shall we Bob. Here we have unadulterated guitar sounds merging with the karaoke-friendly vocals to create good-time belters such as ‘Hollywood Nights’. Pushing 70, Bob Seger is one of those old-timer US artists a la Bruce Springsteen, And with slower numbers, such as ‘Against The Wind’, which have an undeniable romanticism about them and would hold their own against the likes of Paul Simon, Elton John and Stevie Wonder. That gives you a clue to the target demographic of this album anyhow! Still, a great introduction to Bob Seger for all ages. Try it, you might like it.
Aldo Vanucci
Niko
Hate & Love (Atic Records) Back when people bought records, one of my favourite labels was Grand Central (ask your parents!) and one of their biggest artists was the mighty Aim. Near the end of their reign, they started to release amazing music by Niko, an artist who pretty much had everything - good looks, great songs and an amazing voice. This is her second album, backed as ever, by Aim, who produces some bang-on hip-hop and soulful cuts. My heart lifted when I saw this, like when the sun breaks through a day of dark clouds. This album is everything I hoped for, if you like discovering people who deserve a bigger audience then this is for you - and every one of your Facebook friends.
Hint
Daily Intake (Tru Thoughts Records) For a long time now, Hint has been beavering away, building his rep; awesome remixes in various styles, always on hand to give the Tru Thoughts roster some dance floor damage. This is his third album now and a very good snapshot of where non mainstream dance music is at right now, with bassy reggae influences and some very fine on-point beats. With a decent list of collaborations (Zed Bias, Natalie Storm and Profisee), this could well be the one that hits Hint’s home run. If you like forward-thinking music and have been known to cut some rug from time to time, then this is for you.
Dub Pistols
Worshipping The Dollar (Sunday Best Recordings) Here we have the return of the legendary Barry Ashworth and his Dub Pistols with their fifth album. I remember him rocking Big Beat nights hard and when I met him, he seemed a thoroughly nice chap to boot. The Dub Pistols seem to be constantly touring and receiving massive props again and again. This album continues to a similar style to the last, modern reggae in all its forms, hip hop beats and drum n bass stylings, but all held together with catchy hooks and tight flows, by the likes of Darrison and Rodney P. If the sun is out then this should be your BBQ album of choice, if the sun is hiding, stay in and have a smoke - it’s a win win situation.
Room E
Penguin Child (Proper Songs) Room E is an artist I’ve never heard of with very little info to pass on, so I shall just have to explain this in my usual manner, and all that that implies. If there was a party in LA and DJ Shadow did the nasty with Jan Hammer, Onra was hand to deliver the baby, but it was mainly raised in Ohio on a diet of the Pharcyde, Gong and lemon sorbet then this album would be the product of that mighty concoction! In many ways a simple concoction of programmed beats with nice instrumentation, but one which, whether knowingly or not, has a keen ear for a righteous melody.

Music Backbone
Japandroids Celebration Rock (Polyvinyl)
Canada triumphs once again. Vancouver duo, Japandroids’ sophomore offering, ‘Celebration Rock’, is what happens when you take the classic rock melodrama of The Hold Steady and crank it up to euphoric levels. There may only be two of them but they bring enough heavy heart and soul to the core of ‘The House That Heaven Built’ and the Husker Du-like ‘Fire’s Highway’ to more than compensate, with a Gun Club cover thrown in for good historical measure. With one ear firmly trained on the early-’90s US underground and with a newfound sense of the epic, this is, as the title suggests, a record for the good times - or at least for not letting the bad times prevail. Three cheers.
Tu Fawning A Monument (City Slang)
We all know how difficult it is to find our individual voice in a sea of homogeneity so spare a thought for free-thinking indie bands who strive for the same. Oregon’s Tu Fawning, however, make it look simple. Percussive post-punk whimsy, crypto-gospel refrains, pianos, powerchords and Corrina Repp’s balmy voice all merge in a way that leaves you wondering whether you should be listening to ‘A Monument’ in a chapel or a juke joint. New single, ‘Anchor’, introduces the album with a softly pulsating, linear thrum, while ‘Build A Great Cliff’ is a widescreen belter that has its sights set on Jefferson Airplane. The ambivalence and unpredictability continues apace until the beatific clatter of ‘Bones’ brings things to an epiphanic halt.
Royal Thunder CVI (Relapse)
With hefty doses of Black Sabbath, Black Mountain and black moodiness, ‘CVI’ finds the Georgia psyche-metal coterie in the c/rudest of health, with Mlny Parsonz’ deep, dark howl giving the band a distinctive edge over their Southern-inflected peers. ‘Shake And Shift’ is nine minutes of supreme sludge with a vocal hook that betrays the band’s love of the past; while the slowcore, Earth-like tones of ‘Sleeping Witch’ is so early-’70s you can practically feel your jeans flaring out to embarrassing proportions. They’ve got the name, the look, the sound, the scene - all they need now is the leg-up so that everyone can get in on the rock action. Over to you, Baroness.
Hot Water Music Exister (Rise)
‘Exister’ has been such an anticipated event in the punk rock community that the music is in danger of being overanalysed into oblivion. Thankfully, their first album in eight years and the inevitable maturity hasn’t dampened their rock’n’roll spirit one bit. It may not hit like the first time you ever heard ‘No Division’ but this is still an album that throws up creative surprises: the hard country grumble of ‘Boy, You’re Gonna Hurt Someone’, ‘Drag My Body’’s almost-Fleetwood Mac refrain and ‘Pledge Wore Thin’’s E-Street aspirations. But songs like the title track and ‘Paid In Full’ are always at hand to remind you that HWM are undisputed kings of the gruffcore set. Oft imitated, rarely bettered. Welcome back.

As We Sink
www.facebook.com/ AsWeSinkBand South West punks, As We Sink, are one of those bands who you always knew were good but then, all of a sudden, they turn out to be fucking great. The ‘Ventures’ EP, like their hard-boiled live shows, is a heavyweight statement of intent that should bless the trio with the kind of exposure that they readily deserve. As We Sink’s success lies in the age-old maxim of playing to one’s strengths, in this instance: power, directness and selfbelief. No frills, no filler. The likes of ‘Bitter Teeth’ and ‘Aching Hands, Itchy Feet’ may not cover new territory but the vocal urgency and the soulful execution is so visceral you can almost taste it. Dig in.
The Waterboarders www.thewaterboarders.net
Surf-punk instrumentalists from the sunny south, The Waterboarders, keep things short and shimmering on their new disc ‘Surfbeats’n’Deadbeats’ - paying homage to the past whilst penning a handful of modern-day reverbo-twang twizzlers along the way. Their take on Dead Kennedys’ ‘Moon Over Marin’ is an enjoyably kitschy knockabout while the old school likes of ‘Secret Agent Man’ (Johnny Rivers) and ‘Squad Car’ (The Bel-Airs) find the Plymouth trio shamelessly pissing in the clear-blue waters of the originals. Great stuff. Their own tunes stay true to the ‘60s surf template although they rely too much on the standard twelve-bar scale to stand out from the golden oldies. A bit more lateral thinking should sort that out.
Crash and the ‘Coots www.crashandthecoots. bandcamp.com
Oddball indie misfits are always welcome here, and Crash & The ‘Coots certainly fill the mould. Youthful, quirky (ouch!) and carefree, the Bath quartet relish the opportunity to turn mild eccentricity into songs like the horribly infectious ‘Don’t Have Any Legs’ and ‘Brian Fury Wins!’; although you wonder how long it might take for the novelty to wear off. Still, when you squash Prince, Hot Chip, Bombay Bicycle Club and Darwin Deez into the lo-fi blender and hit the start button with an oversized toy hammer, what can possibly go wrong? They may fizzle out in six months. They may go on to become your favourite new alt pop ensemble. Either way, these vignettes do the ‘Coots proud.
Helical Strake
www.helicalstrake.com After a little research, all I discovered was that helical strakes help to ease turbulence around thermowells. Thanks, Google. They’re an interesting and untypical Devon band, that’s for sure. Although they use the same goth-punk swirls, stadium drums and vocal broodiness of bands like Exit Calm, the ‘Strake sound like they were actually frozen in 1995, just when Mansun and Co were crooning into the public consciousness. ‘Home Of The Enemy’ stalks the room with menace and melody; while ‘Just About You’ takes the bare bones of ‘Eton Rifles’ and dresses it up in post-punk grandeur. With an arsenal of skyward guitar hooks and contemplative swagger, HS are onto a good thing. Time to let the rest of the world know.
Nomad - SOTU (Chemical Solutions)
You can always tell when the summer season is coming as Australia’s Nomad delivers a release that makes the hairs on your neck stand up. That, as well as the sudden urge to drop it at all the forthcoming festivals, boat parties and club appearances you can possibly fit in definitely indicate it’s summer time! ‘SOTU’ takes me back to the first time I heard of Nomad with his awesome remix of ‘Let The Beat Drop’ on PHD, which became the mainstay of my sets for far longer than most other tracks! What’s on offer here is an enigmatic, dark hard trancer, with such drive and ferociousness but with catchy synth hooks that it really stands out against other productions.
Omega Drive - My Name Is (Discover Dark)
Thankfully not anything to do with Eminem, this new release on Recoverworld’s Discover Dark imprint is the perfect cross over track for your sets when you want to bridge the gap from techno into hard trance. The energy levels are constant from the offbeat and what follows is six and a half minutes of pure, relentless tech filth that just builds and builds. When you least expect it, a fantastic synth comes in and another layer of percussion comes out of nowhere. This was road tested at a recent gig in the United States and was subject to many a person wanting to know the name of it immediately after playing, and comes highly recommended.
Oliver Kucera + DJ Update - Dissin Rhythm
(Kucera)
Fresh from releasing more amazing techno tracks that you can shake a stick at, the newly relocated citizen of Berlin (DJ Dano), dons his DJ Update guise for this mash up of rave and techno that has been smashing the place. Taking familiar samples from early 90s rave classics and adding some elusive, but speaker shattering percussion, this, like the Omega Drive track also reviewed this month, builds really nicely before unleashing havoc. Let’s not forget some dark haunting synth stabs that are also hugely effective, before a few quirky edits and a well known Loleatta Holloway vocal sample are thrown into the proceedings. This is definitely a wicked opening track to really set the mood.
Chris Liberator + Sterling Moss - Riff Raff (Abusive 303)
It’s always a good thing when these two team up. Their quirky, punkish style comes to the forefront yet again and we are left with a debut release on Abusive 303 (that certainly is Abusive), yet still rocks the place! With a tongue in cheek vocal belittling freaks, geeks and riff raff, before emitting a fierce acid line, what follows is a killer bass and as we’ve come to expect from this duo, pristine drum work too! This is one of those underground cuts that has been the receiver of some serious hype across worldwide, and deservedly so. The amusingly titled ‘Wandsworth Nick Ain’t That Bad’ by Squat Dom is also worth a spin too!

MATTHEW BOURNE’S EARLY ADVENTURES, Hall for Cornwall, Black Quay, TR1 2LL, 01872 262466, hallforcornwall.co.uk 8pm, £17.50 - £31.50 As part of New Adventures 25th anniversary celebrations, Britain’s favorite choreographer presents a triple bill of acclaimed early works that launched his career. Spitfire ‘An advertisement divertissement’ was Bourne’s first hit in 1988, it hilariously places the most famous 19th Century Ballet showstopper in the world of men’s underwear advertising. Town and Country from 1991 gave Bourne and his company their first Olivier nomination. Remembered as the piece that crystallized the Bourne style; gloriously witty and ironic, but also strangely moving and heartfelt. It explores notions of national character from a bygone era through the evocative music of Edward Elgar, Noel Coward and Percy Grainger, amongst others. The Infernal Galop was inspired by icons of France in the 30s and 40s. This is France as seen by the uptight English imagination, with all the traditional clichés joyously paraded for our entertainment and climaxing in Offenbach’s inevitable Can-Can!

Dir: Ridley Scott Starring: Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Charlize Theron 2012/US/124 min The godfather of modern science-fiction cinema Ridley Scott (Alien and Blade Runner) returns to the Alien franchise for this acid-fuelled prequel set before the events of the first film. The story sees a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. But rather than finding the origin of the species, they find a nasty bunch of face- hugging, aciddripping, alien monsters intent on invading our planet! SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (12A)
Released: 1 June Dir: Rupert Sanders Starring: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron 2012/US/127 min In a twist to the classic fairy tale, a Huntsman is ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed. But instead he winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. Forget about the seven dwarfs! This is more of a medieval scrum-down with epic battles and a dark, gothic, narrative.
RED LIGHTS (TBC)
Released: 22 June Dir: Rodrigo Cortés Starring: Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy 2012/US/119 min In this original thriller Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver), a college professor, and her assistant, Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy), a physicist, both travel the country debunking paranormal activity. But when long-time adversary Silver (Robert De Niro) reappears the duo obsessively try to prove he is a fraud. An original concept and heavy-weight cast should all add up to a great evening’s entertainment.

‘Olympics? Diamond Jubilee? Austerity cuts? Anyone else feel like breaking up a few paving slabs?
The first small-stage show at the White Rabbit proved a success (Plymouth, 14th April). BEARFIGHT slashed through their menacing noise with yelps and hooks galore; AS WE SINK were tight, intense, powerful and pretty magnificent; while Brighton trio, GNARWOLVES, weaved hardcore and pop-punk into a clever tapestry with echoes of Small Brown Bike and The Arteries. UK tour time! In Southampton (Unit, 19th April), THE FAUX messed with our minds via attention-deficit speedcore. In Stoke (Minsters, 20th April), EVERYTHING ON RED lived out their punk’n’roll fantasies; the excellent ALL THE BEST TAPES proffered melodic punk with a sweet twist of invention; and AMBASSADORS OF SHALOM boasted of their God-punk credentials over scrappy punk clatter. They proudly told me they were Christians. I benignly told them we were atheists. They left. How magnanimous. In Leeds (Cockpit, 21st April), Sam Cook aka BAD IDEAS made a nice acoustic sound, and the power and poise of regional progpunks, SOUNDS OF SWAMI, was something of an eye-opener. Nottingham was playing host to Hit The Deck Festival (22nd April): spread across five venues with the streets cordoned off to allow the haircuts to freely roam whilst comparing neck ink and Drop Dead shirts. At the Forum, THE SOCIAL CLUB turned their Hold Steady riffola into an all-smiles stage party; THE BLACK & REDS made one guitar and a drum kit sound like Led Zep; THE SWELLERS stuck to the pop-punk yellow brick road; while BAT SABBATH (Cancer Bats acting out Sabbath fantasies) were convincing if corny. Later, with the Ozzie cape hanging up to dry, CANCER BATS reappeared to rattle the Rescue Rooms with their supreme punk-metal melange. But with heat exhaustion looming we snuck out to catch the inimitable ROLO TOMASSI peddling their barktastic spazzcore over at Stealth. Down in London (Old Blue Last, 23rd April), dedicated politics’n’bass duo, ALT TRACK, kicked up an anarcho-beat storm via computers, synths and overdriven guitar with Pete William’s heartfelt verse reaching the parts that other red-rap ensembles fail to reach. Euro tour time! First stop, La Louviere, Belgium (1st May), where frazzled, antipodean garage punks, HITS, charmed the locals with their alcohol-fuelled, Stooges-esque stomp. In Nijmegen, Netherlands, Dutch quartet, RAVENS, were a pleasant No Ideafriendly surprise (3rd May). In Bremen, hotrod trio, NITROUS OXIDE WRESTLING CLUB, would have been amazing if they could play their songs properly (4th May). We then had a blowout on the autobahn. Not recommended. Folk trio, HENRI PARKER & THE LOWERED LIDS, made a refreshing change from all the guitars (Hamburg, 5th May) and WONDER COAST took Lucero to gentler terrain (Berlin, 6th May). Learning, en route to Paris, that Against Me!’s Tom Gabel is to undergo gender reassignment was a mind-blowing moment on a par with discovering crotchless panties in a certain someone’s bedroom drawer when I was thirteen. But really, what’s all the fuss? His essence will stay the same. A bigger dose of oestrogen won’t break the personality bank. Good luck, old chap / new woman. So, we get to Paris only to learn that The Murderburgers have pulled out due to appendicitis (9th May). But THE COPYRIGHTS were on hand to deliver those predictably earthy guitar chops and singalong choruses. Back in the Netherlands, we played a cool (and insanely hot) show at an ex-squat in Den Bosch with POREM, who were Eurofolk-punk pants (10th May); while the next night in Beverwijk, affable Danish dudes, THE 20BELOWS, were ably blasting through some derivative yet cheerful skatepunk. Finally, in Tilburg (12th May), we were joined by our friends, TELLISON, whose quintessentially English pop-rock took on a weightier form, occupying that fertile ground between The Future- and Lemonheads. Nifty. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
