'Let them eat cake' by Philip Harris “'Let them eat cake' was a kind of reinterpretation of a Marie Antoinette type character. News Feed Boardmasters, the mighty music and action sports festival being held at Newquay’s Fistral Bay on 7 – 11 August has added some all-new exciting surf comps to it’s impressive line-up.

Since 1981 Boardmasters has been an integral part of the British surf scene. From humble beginnings as a small surf competition, the festival is now home to one of the most exciting surf events on the British surfing calendar, embracing homegrown surf talent more than ever before. Existing surf comps at Boardmasters include the legendary Men’s Open, with 2002 champion and twice UK Pro Tour champion Russell Winter and 2012 UK Pro Tour champion Jayce Robinson already confirmed to take to the waves, is the return of the Women’s open, featuring English women’s champion, Keisha Eyre and 2012 UK Pro Champion Evie Johnson. Leopallooza to host Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour Leopallooza festival, known, quite rightly, as ‘The Greatest House Party in a field’, held in Bude on August 2 – 4, has announced it will be the venue for the only UK event in the Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour. A spokesperson said: “We will be hosting the inaugural ‘Jack Gear Invitational’ FBM contest over the festival weekend, on a custom built track set within the wooded grounds of Leopallooza.”

The competition will showcase 40 of the best riders in the world and is set to the most exciting freestyle event in the UK, with £5000 prize fund. The tour visits several countries including Sweden, Croatia, America and Canada and now Cornwall has been added to the list. Local Charities Benefit from Porthleven Masked Ball Porthleven Town Council, Surfers Against Sewage, Porthleven Community School and Pants Matters have all benefited from a recent £2,600 donation from Masked Ball Productions.

Masked Ball Productions, the organisers of the annual Porthleven Masked Ball, have said they donated the money as a way of giving something back to local people. Kelvin Batt, of The Masked Ball said: “Although we use local businesses wherever possible in putting on our events, we felt that it would be good to give something to people who do not benefit directly from the ball.”

Gravity Rally returns to Exmoor Last year saw Gravity Enduro really established itself in the UK. Bastille

We catch up with Bastille’s frontman, Dan Smith, ahead of their headlining slots at GoldCoast Oceanfest and Leopallooza Alternative rock band, Bastille, whose name derives from Bastille Day, an event celebrated on 14 July, which happens to be the same date lead vocalist, Dan Smith, was born, formed back in 2010. Initially Bastille was singer-songwriter Dan’s solo project, but he later decided to form a band instead. We kicked off by asking Dan if he prefers working alone or with a band: “I still write songs on my own, they obviously have an element of me in them, I have a strong idea of what I want a song to be and just get on with it and then the rest of the band will input into it further down the line, but I’m the main driving force behind them.”

Success has come quickly for Bastille - only a year after forming EMI Music announced that they had offered Bastille a record contract with Virgin Records and their debut single, "Overjoyed" was released in April 2012. A second single, "Bad Blood" in August 2012, getting to number ninety in the charts. It was their third track, “Flaws” that was to be their first track to enter the charts inside the Top 40, debuting at twenty-one.

February this year saw them release a fourth single, "Pompeii” this time to huge demand and charting at number two in the UK and numberone in Scotland. Their first studio album, Bad Blood, was released a month later, in March this year, and debuted at the top the UK Albums Chart, as well as having firmly rooted themselves in the Radio 1 playlist - quite the achievement for a new band.

We asked Dan how it feels to have come such a long way in a very short space of time: “It’s

been an interesting few years, lots of unexpected things have happened and it feels a bit unreal at times. I’ve been working with the band for two years now, everything settled down and we have tight thing going on, we spend so much time together, they are like an extended family!”

The band has ben successful with their live shows too, selling out two UK tours.

Bastille are set to rock the South West this month – on June 22nd they are set to headline the always awesome GoldCoast Oceanfest in Croyde, North Devon, Glastonbury on June 28th and Leopallooza on August 3rd. We asked Dan, how he felt about headlining Oceanfest and Leopallooza and if he was planning to fit in a surf: “I can’t surf as we live in land locked London, but our drummer, Woody who is from Plymouth, is properly up for it. We’re never headlined anything before, so are quite nervous, but the crowd can expect a reflection of our recent mix tape and a good upbeat show – we want them to have a good time and hopefully that will come across.”

The band have also been confirmed as a support act to perhaps one of the greatest South West bands ever, Muse, alongside previously announced special guest Dizzie Rascal. They’ll be playing Ricoh Stadium in Coventry, Emirates Stadium in London and Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

“We’re nervous, we’ve never played at such big arenas before and it’s quite worrying knowing that there all the people out there haven’t come to see you!,” says Dan honestly. We think you’ll do just fine.

From YouTube sensation to iTunes chart-topper – Oxford-based solo artist Lewis Watson tells As a singer-songwriter in 2013, how do you know when you’ve really made it? Is it when you’ve topped the singer-songwriter chart on iTunes? When your videos have been watched over three-million times on YouTube? Or when you’ve signed your first recording contract with one of the Big Three record labels? In the case of 20-year-old Lewis Watson, it’s all of the above – and then some.

But for the young acoustic guitarist, who released his third EP ‘The Wild’ earlier this year on Warner Music, a big clue came when people began uploading their own versions of his songs to YouTube, exactly as he’d done when he was first starting out. “To see and hear people starting the way I did, by playing songs that they love, makes me really happy. And they’re my songs.” He continues, “Even the ones that might not be as musically amazing as some of the others, they still fill me with the same feeling because they’ve taken the time to learn the songs and play them. I’m completely over the moon about it.”

Just three years after playing Bombay Bicycle Club songs in front of his webcam, Lewis has already left the confines of his bedroom behind for the joys of recording studios and life on the road. Looking back, he admits that it can be overwhelming to think about how quickly things have changed. “I didn’t even think I’d ever do a gig. I just wanted to play music because it was new to me and I really enjoyed it. I wanted an audience, but without having to play in front of people.”

It’s difficult to imagine that someone who recently played three consecutive nights at the world-famous Sydney Opera House - alongside fellow UK soloist Birdy – is the same young man that, just a few years earlier, suffered with pre-gig jitters. “The nerves are still there,” he admits. “But I’ve kind of learnt to thrive off them and use them to psych myself up and think, this is going to be the best gig I’ve played.”

One of the things that makes Lewis’s speedy rise towards stardom particularly incredible is the modest musical background he had before taking his first few strides into the music scene.

“To see and hear people starting the way I did, by playing songs that they love, makes me really happy. And they’re my songs.”

s 247’s Rob Sleigh why he’s looking forward to his first-ever South West dates this month…

Far from being a college-trained guitar player and vocalist like many of his peers, his first encounter with an instrument came just a few months before his first home recording, when he was given a guitar for his 16th birthday. “As soon as I picked it up, I was writing songs.

They were all awful, of course. I don’t think any of them have seen the light of day [laughs].”

Following in the footsteps of Radiohead and Foals, Lewis is the latest in a long line of young artists to hail from the musical rabbit’s foot that is Oxford. But while he modestly admits that the city provided a starting block for aspiring musicians like himself, it’s

clear that his subsequent success has been down to more than just luck and growing up in the right place.

“Oxford’s full of pubs and there was an open mike night every night of the week. When I started doing gigs, I think I did an open mike every night for a couple of months.”

As the good old days of webcams and open mikes continue to fade into the distant past for Lewis, he prepares to head out on his second UK tour of the year. This time around, he’ll be making his live debut here in the South West, with dates lined up in Exeter and Yeovil. “I love being on the road and, if the last tour is anything to go by, this one’s going to be very fun. I’m going to places that I haven’t been to in my life. I don’t think I’ve been down to the South West before, even for pleasure, so it will be very cool to go there and put on a gig and meet the people that are listening to my music. I’m very, very excited. I can’t wait.”

Patrick James Pearson Band We talk to Patrick James Pearson about why his powerful and gritty three piece keyboard driven outfit are releasing their debut album, And So It Goes, on limited edition double vinyl Interview: Ellie Hudson-Hopton The Patrick James Pearson band are geared up to launch their debut album, And So It Goes, on limited edition double vinyl, available from the city's record store, Last Shop Standing, in Bretonside Bus Station, prior to its release this month on various other digital formats - giving local fans the chance to snap it up. But in an era of CDs and more commonly downloads, we wondered what lay behind the decision to revert to a format that could be considered pretty last century…

"Younger readers out there that may not understand vinyl, I don't blame you. High price tag, won't fit in a bag, need an old machine to work. It doesn't exactly sell itself in this Internet generation, and immediate consumer society. Making art is hard and sustaining it is even harder, so I'm happy for people to digest mine in any given format,” says Patrick. Vinyl is for the understanding and the passionate, or the obsessed.

All I can say to the young is if you like music, give it a go. It will last longer I promise, especially when your hard drive fails...” he continues.

Patrick believes that as an artist it is fundamental that you educate yourself in diverse tastes and make the effort to part with what doesn't excite and stimulate and buy what does and advises to “walk some galleries, see some shows.” He tells us he spends what little recreational money he has not on games gadgets or phone bills, but on records. “I mark every occasion in my life with one. It's buying art, affordable art, something that looks feels and smells inherently good. So when we came to release our own material voices of opinion and sonic nostalgia, under the words of Vonnegut...'And So It Goes' it wasn't really a decision to release on vinyl. It was a given. With so much weight of story and time we have dedicated to these songs as a band, it would be an injustice to treat them in any other way.” Patrick likens the band’s vinyl release to being like the oil and canvas of the music business – the costs are more, but the result is unpricable.

“To know your words and music exists tangibly is something that doesn't really compute in this modern age. To know your album hangs around in someone's collection is humbling to say the least. Sometimes putting a price on your work means you give a toss about it right?” says Patrick. Grated, it can mean you listen harder, try to relate to the music more and

The PJP Band only actually produced 250 copies and I wondered if this was to stir up a bit of rush for what could one day be a collector's item?

"We're under no grand impressions that this will ever be a collector's item, although that would be rad, eh! We've put the record out ourselves. I maxed my credit card out on 250 copies - that's enough to show you're serious about what you're doing and small enough to make a limited release. It works out nicely I guess, we've nullified it by hand numbering each one l guess, so it makes it even more 'collectable'. It's nothing new, releasing a small personal number on vinyl, and who knows, a label may print up another load in time to come. But I know how great that feeling was to sit around with friends, drinking a beer and hand packing each record.

That is what really makes a limited release. Not just for the collector, but for us as well. It wouldn't be the same knowing someone else shrink wrapped the bugger!”

Josh Curnow

We catch up with Cornish solo sensation Josh Curnow ahead of his set at Rock Oyster Festival and talk tough times, lucky breaks and performing live Interview: Rachael D'Cruze There’s nothing better than lyrics written straight from the heart, something Josh Curnow cotton on to at a very early age. “It’s a mixture of my life as I was going through school.

They were tough times – my school not helping me through my dyslexia and stuff like that. There was also a really bad break-up and 80% of the songs are written about that,” says gravel-voiced acoustic troubadour Josh, now 24, talking about the release of his EP ‘Me V You’. “Music is my ultimate way of getting things off my chest without confronting them – there are lots of hidden messages in my songs,” he adds earnestly.

“I picked up a guitar when I was about 13 and started playing.

My first instrument was the drums though, which I played since I was 11, but my older brothers had guitars, so it was inevitable that would come later,” says Josh who grew up on the North Cornish coast. He didn’t start out playing his now distinctive impassioned pop, rock and folk blend though – as a teenager he played first with a punk rock band and later with a fast temp rap-metal band. “It only takes one person to turn around and say they don’t want to do it anymore and you’re stuck,” says Josh talking about his experience with his last band who were travelling further a field and had a chance to make it before a member left. “I was heartbroken, gutted.”

It was after his band has split, that he picked up a guitar and started working and re-writing all of those songs he’d channeled his energy into during school. He was 18 at this point and landed a job at a local point and things started to pick up for him – the landlord, Gary, was supportive of his music and gave him first solo gig. He also turned a blind eye to his lateness when the surf was good.

His lucky break though really came years earlier when his father, the local pastor, allowed Gospel singer, Philippa Hanna and he manager producer to stay with them while she played Creation Fest. They had a jam together and the producer said he’d keep an eye on him… “I’d never heard

of her at the time,” explains Josh, “but looked her up later on and couldn’t believe it! I loved her music and bought all her albums.” Then, only after his band had split and he was down in dumps but picking himself up and working on his solo material again did producer Andy Baker get in touch about making an EP – he’d seen Josh’s solo work online.

They recorded ‘Me V You’ last summer – a debut six track collection of deeply personal acoustic rock songs.

Playing in front of more people I’m actually less nervous than with a small crowd. I love everything about playing live. I love entertaining – there is no better feeling,” says Josh when we asking him about his set at Rock Oyster Festival later this month.

The Shack is probably one of Falmouth’s best and least known seafood restaurants, with its quirky interior, lively atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff and divine food. The restaurant offers nibbles, starters, mains and desserts with a wide selection of wines, soft drinks, lager, cider and ale. The prices are mid range with nibbles around the £3, starters from £6.50-£9.95, mains between £9.95-£18.95 and desserts around £6.

Most of the mains are daily specials rather than menu basics as all the food is caught or produced locally. The main menu consists of the classics; crab and lobster from St Ives, mussels and oysters from Fowey and scallops from Falmouth bay. Steak and vegetarian options are also available. To start we had ‘Hand Dived Jumbo Scallops’ and ‘Crispy Squid with Sweet Chilli sauce’. Both were delicious, the sauce complemented the scallops beautifully and the squid’s batter was crispy without being greasy. For the main courses we had ‘Cuttlefish Risotto Arrabbiata’ and ‘Whole St Ives Crab’ (which comes with a choice of dips). Having never had cuttlefish before, I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was really tasty with a meaty texture and fairly salty flavour, balanced by the sauce and chorizo.

The crab, although delectable, isn’t recommended for the squeamish, those who don’t like getting messy or those on a first date! For dessert we had the Chocolate truffle slice served with either clotted cream or ice cream. It was heavenly, with a silky texture that I will need to reacquaint myself with very soon. Highly recommended I will definitely be returning to this splendid seafoodery.

Brazz’s cool contemporary interior with lush seating, inventive use of colour and enormous wall mounted fish tank is a quite a welcome from the Taunton’s many rustic eateries.

My friend and I were made to feel very welcome by the waiting staff, who were attentive for the duration of our meal. The menu at Brazz is extensive with choices for veggies, meat eaters and fish lovers. I liked the sound of ‘The Butcher’s Board’ – confit duck leg, chicken liver parfait, breaded chicken, cauliflower piccalilli, pickled onions and bread but we’re here to sample the fish! All of Brazz’s fish comes from the small fishing town of Brixham in Devon. I was torn between the Pan Fried Fillet of Salmon with Spinach, Braised Leek and Chive Butter Sauce and Steamed Cornish Mussels with Coconut Milk Coriander and Lime, but at the last minute played it safe with good old fish ‘n’ chips…

I lucked out though as it wasn’t just ant fish and chips – the beer battered Brixham haddock came on a wooden serving board – the fish in a paper cone and the chips in a mini-frying basket – a kitsch lovers dream! Portion size was on the small size for £12.50 in my opinion but the fish was divine and the batter spot in – a perfect thin, crispy coating. It came served with minted peas & tartar sauce, which were both extremely tasty. The desert menu was too tempting to pass up, so I treated myself to lime, banana and white Chocolate with meringue, £6.50.

It was possibly the most interesting and delicious desert I’ve had all year – I’m intrigued to check out some of the more interesting dishes on the menu next time.

Le Bistrot Pierre had opened it’s doors in Plymouth’s Royal William Yard just days before we visited yet was already incredibly busy. The historic New Cooperage building was the perfect setting for authentic Provençal style food with lots of wood, foliage, interesting vintage street style lamps and tons of natural light flooding in – impressive. If you’ve a foodie, pouring over the impressive menu is a treat in itself, so you may as well make it count with an appetizer – I recommend the juicy and flavoursome mixed marinated Provençal olives. To start, I went for the ‘Fritôts de calamars’ crispy fried squid with roasted garlic mayonnaise and wasn’t disappointed. The squid tasted exceptionally fresh and wasn’t tough as it sometimes can be and the batter was perfect – light and crispy, without the grease factor. £5.75 well spent. For my main, I decided to live a little a give the whole crab a go…All the seafood at Le Bistrot Pierre is locally sourced and the crab is caught off the outskirts of Berry Head near Brixham.

Although I eat crab fairly regularly, I’ve never de-shelled one myself before – luckily my friendly waiter was on hand to give me some advice and I semi-successfully managed to crack the shell and pull the meat out. It was a messy, messy job but the crab was the freshest I’ve tasted in the UK and absolutely moreish, so I was compelled to keep going with it. It came served alone with a few dips but it was so tasty I found I didn’t need it. A platter of wonderful cheeses, including nutty flavoured St. Marcellin cheese from Isere and the traditional escargot from Burgundy, and an espresso served as the perfect end to an amazing French meal.

Highly recommended.

The Barbican Theatre celebrates the centenary of the Great Suffrage Pilgrimage from Land’s End to Hyde Park, with questions and debates asking if anything has changed since 1913… Welcome to OXYGEN-NATION! 100 young people aged between 16-25 will gather at the Barbican Theatre to ask Plymouth city’s leaders questions about the Great Suffrage Pilgrimage and the very real social issues in Plymouth today. They will consider whether the issues of child poverty, sweated labour and white slave traffic, first raised by those walking women in 1913 have been met and what exactly they mean right now – in the city, in the country, in the world one hundred years later?

The idea is a topical debate with a difference as young people will be given a voice to speak with a panel, which includes Carole Burgeyne, Chris Penberthy, Kate Taylor and Phil Gibby.

Singer and song writer, Frank Turner has shown his support for the event saying that “Getting young people involved in discussions about history and politics is both excellent and important; it’s great to see the Barbican Theatre bringing youngsters in for this event.”

The evening will continue with extracts from the Dreadnought South West’s play ‘Oxygen’ by Natalie McGrath which champions women’s voices and stories with full performances of the show taking place at TR2 on the 28 & 29 June.

Dir: Zack Snyder Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Russell Crowe 2012/US/ 148min This reboot of the Superman franchise sees Henry Cavill don the cape and red boots as the mild mannered Clark Kent.

Retelling the origin story of Superman, Kent grows up in the idealistic rural paradise of Arkansas, saving the odd school bus from certain destruction along the way, before moving to the big city to start his career as a journalist.

But he is forced to confront his secret extra-terrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race hell-bent on destroying the planet. Great looking effects, seamless casting and a director in Zac Snyder who knows how to adapt comic books (300) should all add up to a super experience.

Dir: Paul Weitz Starring: Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Michael Sheen, Wallace Shawn, Lily Tomlin 2013/US/117 min Straitlaced Princeton University admissions officer Portia Nathan (Tina Fey) is caught off-guard when she makes a recruiting visit to an alternative high school overseen by her former college classmate, the freewheeling John Pressman (Paul Rudd). Pressman believes that Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), his gifted yet very unconventional student, might well be the son that Portia secretly gave up for adoption many years ago. This unconventional comedy with the ever reliable Rudd should raise a smile or two.

AFTER EARTH (12A)

Night Shyamalan Starring: Will Smith and Jaden Smith 2012/US/100 min Nepotistic acting duo Will and Jaden Smith play father and son, Cyper and Kitai, who are stranded on earth 1000 years after mysterious events forced humanity to migrate to a distant planet called Nova Prime. They crash land onto the planet after an asteroid storm damages their space-craft and leaves Cyper fighting for his life.

Earth is now overrun with extra-terrestrial beasties and it is down to Kitai to find the rescue beacon that will save their lives.

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA (TBC)

Released:7 June Director: Chris Wedge Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Beyoncé Knowles 2013/US/118 min This glitzy effort from soon to be retiring Steven Soderbergh charts the unconventional five-year relationship between Liberace (Douglas) and Thorson (Damon), who was 16 when he met the self-made millionaire. Thorson actually reshaped his face with plastic surgery to look more like the famously flamboyant pianist, and later filed a multimilliondollar law suit against him. Looks like great fun and should be worth a trip down the local multiplex.

DESPICABLE ME 2 (3D) Released 28 June Dir: Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin Starring: Steve Carell, Kristin Wiig and Steve Coogan 2013/US/TBC Animated serial to the surprising good Despicable Me sees the grouchy Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) recruited by Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), head of the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal. Expect plenty of those weird little yellow things to be jumping around and acting like suicidal lemmings, with Gru providing most of the dark comedy.

THE STONE ROSES: MADE OF STONE (U)

Released: 5 June Dir: Shane Meadows Starring: Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary Mounfield and Alan Wren 2012/UK/96 min The director of This is England, Shane Meadows turns his documentarian eye to the life of the English alternative rock band, The Stone Roses.

The band had split 15 years ago, but last year decided to reunite for a series of gigs in Manchester. The film successfully explores the tensions and personalities of this group and is rock solid entertainment.

WORLD WAR Z (TBC)

Released 21 June Dir: Marc Forster Starring: Brad Pitt, Matthew Fox, Mireille Enos and Eric West 2012/US/TBC This is one of the summer’s biggest releases with the zombie genre showing no chance of dying a quick death! In this comic book adaptation, United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt) travels the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself. It looks great, but will it scare you? We’ll find out in June.

Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs

Clarietta (Heavenly Recordings)

Stomping debut from the London 5-piece who are most certainly worthy of the recent praise and hype.

Last year’s single, I Watch You, produced by Edwyn Collins (who also produced the rest of the album) is included here. Well, what can we say? They’ve got the looks, they’ve got the post-punk swagger in their sound, and the singer sounds more than a little like Tom Verlaine. But that doesn’t matter, even if it’s completely intentional. The title song kicks some major arse, same as the opener, Things We Be. The keyboards compliment the harshness of the guitars and the pounding drumming, and the overall vibe is drenched in rock & roll. They play with passion and feeling, and it shows. Stunningly good.

The Fall Re-Mit (Cherry Red)

It’s safe to say that Mark E Smith is not interested in mellowing with age, and so here is The Fall‘s 30th studio album, packed with all the elements we love about them. Tick the checklist: repetition, edgy guitars, garage riffs, charging drums, simplistic but effective guitar melodies, and of course, Smith’s snarling vocals and witty wordplay. Check out the Record Store Day single Sir William Wray (included here), which stampedes all over the speakers, and to contrast, the spacey and trippy Hittite Man. Mark E Smith has been the only constant member of The Fall, but this is the fourth album by the current lineup. What they bring is a fresh take on the classic Fall tradition.

Cogno Natty Jungle Revolution (Big Dada)

The album is exactly what the title promises: the undisputed King of the Jungle, Mr Congo Natty (previously Rebel MC) is here again, with a progression on the jungle themes he established in the ‘90s, this time also aided by dubstep, and typically drenched in reggae and peppered with Rastafari philosophies. His usual crew and guests shine across the 10 tracks here: Tenor Fly, Top Cat, General Levi and Daddy Freddie. Rapid-fire bass, hard-edged ragga MC vocals, sweet singing (Nanci & Phoebe), the slickest drums...it’s all there.

And it’s mixed by the Lord of the Desk, Mr Adrian Sherwood. The sample of the Jamaicans’ Ba Ba Boom works well on Get Ready, one of this album’s many highlights.

James Skelly & The Intenders

Love Undercover (Cooking Vinyl)

This is practically The Coral in all but name, featuring the lead singer James Skelly and 3 other members. Skelly is on the album cover playing his Rickenbacker guitar, and it’s business as usual: strong melodies sung in his trademark powerful vocal style, reminiscent of ‘60s soul and pop, including the brilliant single You’ve Got it All, cowritten with Paul Weller. Also included is the blues stomp, Do It Again, which was a free give away download from their website. Production is also very tight and crystal clear across the whole album.

Check out the gloriously uplifting What A Day, with its joyous chorus, piano chords and slide guitar.

Elsewhere there’s melancholy on Turn Away. Nice.

Myron & E Broadway Stones Throw

I've been collecting music heavily since I was 17 and have always had a soft spot for late 60s and 70s soul music, mainly due to my heroes sampling that era. When I find some dusty old artist I've not heard of before and play it I often wonder, how come no one makes music like this anymore, well they do and this album is a perfect example of that.

Built around a love for silky smooth soul music and the ability to make it these guys have linked up with the Soul Investigators out of Finland and delivered one of the best retro sounding albums for a long time. If you liked anything from Amy Winehouse to Mayer Hawthorne then you should definitely check this.

The Skints Part and Parcel Bomber music

At the time of writing, it has been raining solidly for two days, so is this album of summer inspired modern reggae going to touch me or not? Luckily for the Skints I've always had a soft spot for the last two tone revival and these guys are directly inspired by them, in my mind anyway. Produced by the brilliant Prince Fatty these guys create on point reggae that could easily have been put amongst jerry dammers etc and stand up. It isn't going to make the sun shine any more but with their massive amounts of tour dates and this killer combo of authentic sounds and quality melodies I can see these guys quickly rising to headline festivals and crack the charts.

Swindle

Long Live the Jazz Deep Medi records The contrary side of me goes against albums that everyone universally loves. I also won't read books that suddenly everyone is reading. Not sure what that says but anyways this is one of those albums that every music critic bangs on about how it changes the game etc. For those unaware Swindle is primarily a grime producer who has a knack of adding jazz and soul elements, left of field productions and who djs and reps Rinse Fm. The question is whether this album would appeal to people who aren't already in his target audience and I hate to make all those other music critics correct but this totally does. The elements are based in grime and uk dance productions but the way Swindle works them gives them totally mass appeal.

Telemachus in the Evening YNR productions

When I was young the only limit to the new music I could hear was how much I would spend in shops, nowadays I get sent a lot of music and the limit is time I have to indulge myself in it. Nowadays music is so much easier to discover and for me getting sent music I would would have never heard of otherwise is one of the nice things in life.

This would not have been on my radar, a mainly instrumental album of hip hop inspired beats with occasional guest vocalists, usually it's the vocal tracks that stand out to me, on this album though the deep soudtracky otherworldly beats have me hooked. Tight punchy production, left of centre sample choices and an amazing ability to bring it all together, if you are looking for an album for a long drive or to come down to, you should discover this for yourself.

Take What You Got/Sludge (G13) Another one that’s been going off on the dance floor, both sides are fat, Rowney doing jump up G13 style. It`s rare you get two tunes on a release that are this hype. Mr Nice

Probably the most wanted track by all dnb DJs and a must play in the clubs at the moment with serious support from Andy C, Noisia, Hype, Friction. If you haven't heard this track yet it would be like you didn't hear Pendulum's anthem "Vault". Maxxi P

DJ Marky & S.P.Y.

Yellow Shoes / Calibre RMX (Innerground Records) Whenever this man remix's a tune he always does it justice, but this has calibre in his element re editing Marky & S.P.Y. original piano sample and confidently removing the vocal hook. This is a must listen to get us in the mood for summer. Maxxi P

New Music Backbone

THE PJP BAND And So It Goes (Ouf)

Holy f**k, was this worth the wait. The keyboarddriven art-pop trio have set their sights way beyond the rolling hills of their native Devon but there's a homegrown charm here that betrays their vision.

Frontman, Patrick James Pearson's understanding of emotive drama and elegant songcraft is evident throughout, with echoes of Bowie and Lennon at every turn. And when you can produce something with the elegiac reach of 'Sweet Tokyo', the stark honesty of 'Stone Cold Cinema' and the inspirational gallop of 'I Am A Racer' on a debut album, the future is, indubitably, yours. Backed by a savagely nuanced rhythm section, there's no reason why this band, and this début, shouldn't create an international buzz.

ASG

Blood Drive (Relapse) North Carolina's ASG have spotted a gap in the desert-metal market somewhere between the Southern sluice of Baroness and the melodic heaviosity of Torche. Their forth album goes some way to filling that gap. Granted, they've pitted themselves amongst some of the greatest modern rock'n'roll bands in the world but the likes of 'Scrappy's Trip', 'Castlestorm' and 'Children's Music' deliver on many levels, reaching harmonic, psychedelic heights and plumbing overdriven depths to forge an album that stands on its own two feet. Jason Shi's ethereal croon certainly helps to cement the band's holistic modus operandi, while the band's sonic nod to the distant and not-so-distant past – Sabbath, Kyuss, Mastodon, Zeke – won't do them any harm.

LARRY & HIS FLASK

By The Lamplight (Xtra Mile)

If your only experience of folk-punk, that much misappropriated of fusions, is The Levellers and Frank Turner, then you need to get out more. And, while you're out there, go listen to Oregon's Larry & His Flask. Our Larry and his merry posse of glorified buskers utilise banjo, accordion, fiddlesome hooks but these songs are rooted in eras of old time country oft ignored by self-styled post-punk 'troubadours'. 'Pandemonium' is gypsy-jazz with steel balls, ‘Out Of Print’ proffers a bittersweet bluegrass bop while ‘The Battle For Clear Sight’ exposes the naked pathos at the heart of the band's multi-layered bluster. 'By The Lamplight' is devoid of cliché and rich in experience. And not a manky dreadlock in sight. Result.

RETOX YPLL (Epitaph)

When you've been at the helm of one of the most pioneering avant-hardcore ensembles of the past twenty years it might feel that the shadow cast is a long one to side-step. But Justin Pearson's time served in The Locust has never diluted his uncompromising artistic vision, as this sophomore Retox album proves. Sure, it's a predictable and over-played premise – tight, fast, short, dystopian noisescapes with lots of screaming – but you sense that Pearson's reputation as subcultural iconoclast and Situationist spoof-meister instils a greater sense of topical relevance in songs like 'Mature Science' (check the accompanying cop/Klan-killer video). It's a fine line between art terrorism and childlike tantrum but Retox seem to come out on the credible side. www.247magazine.co.uk

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF Ceremony (City Slang)

My First Tooth are back with their second album and they sound bigger and better than ever. Following on from the folky-vibes of debut ‘Territories’, the Northampton group have spent many a night on the road perfecting their craft. Here we have an eclectic mix of compelling songs, from the catchy radio-friendly opener ‘Claw To Club’ to the familiarsounding single, ‘Past Broadcasts’ (this one would be a perfect sporting anthem). The winner here is the brilliant sing-a-long ‘Heartbeat Retreat’. They leave you with an epic, 50s sounding number, ‘The Palace’, which leaves you dreaming of whiling away an afternoon in an American diner. With genre-defying hints of Nirvana, Longpigs, Grouplove and Snow Patrol, it’s clear MFT are attempting to carve their own musical path with great aplomb.

LOCRIAN

Return To Annihilatio (Bridge Nine) We stay in the crippling dark with Chicago noise-drone skylarks, Locrian. If that title doesn't get you burying yourself in a shallow grave, the elongated post-rock miserablism of 'Exiting The Hall Of Vapor And Light' surely will. It's the kind of noise that you'd imagine would be playing in the elevator on the way down to hell. The title track is more engaging but still leaves you looking over your shoulder for signs of the grim reaper.

Thankfully, in my case, it was just a hungry black cat. If your skin has been toughened by years of listening to the likes of Swans and Sunn0))) then this will pose no danger. Everyone else, down to the air-raid shelter.

LEMURIA

The Distance Is So Big (Bridge Nine) If you could align a single band to the UK’s best festival, End of the Road, Woodpigeon would be it. Their poignant lyrics and beautifully Canadian sounds make for some spellbinding songs. The opening line to the fantastically titled ‘The Saddest Music in the World’ is lush: ‘I slipped a tape under your door...’; ‘Red Rover’ employs a Teenage Fanclub style swoon; and ‘Little Wings’ showcases some fine, Kathryn Williams-esque vocals which wouldn’t be out of place in an English folk club.

‘Sufferin Suckatash’, has a Drive By Truckers energy, rich varied strings weaving their way through a curvy path. The only thing which really lets this album down is when you sit it next to their previous offerings, where they were great, this is merely good.

I IS ANOTHER I Is Another (Siren)

The rubbishly monikered I Is Another is the brainchild of Jonah Matranga and Ian Love. For those who don't know, their respective towering achievements have been with Far and Rival Schools which, once you recognise this, is blindingly obvious throughout this debut collaboration. Matranga's proto-emo croon is painted on in thick strokes while Love's reverbed guitar swirls and considered powerchords barely stray from the template. Opening gambit, ‘Queen Of Swords’, swirls and grumbles with that familiar post-punk earnestness that both helped pioneer but it's still epic and brooding stuff.

Especially when the twin peaks of ‘Kerry Jane’ and ‘Shake’ loom into view; Love's quasi-psychedelic arrangements forming the perfect platform for Matranga's vocal leaps and curve-balls.

Louk

Ray Kajioka + Diego Hostettler (Early Bird)

This little beauty from Sweden has been tearing the place up at recent gigs, and to be fair there is a strong diversity within all five mixes on offer with some very playable material. Man of the hour Joel Mull's Late Night mix is the one though, it lulls you into a false sense of security thinking that it's just going to progressively build. However, the fun doesn't stop there as it drops into a riff of huge deep, Detroit-esque synth chords that really have a wicked effect on the dancefloor. I have heard this one in a few late night sets as well as during the day at festivals and both times the response has been huge.

Q-Hey

North Wind (Torque) There is just something mystical about Q-Hey's techno that means it stays in your record box for quite some time. He manages to do something slightly different from the norm and yet not too abstract that it clears a dancefloor.

This is something he has maintained for quite some time ever since releases on his Moon Age imprint a decade or so ago. Anyway, here on Japan's Torque label, 'North Wind' is an absolute smasher of a track, relentless from the word go and a simple groove builds before letting all hell rip with a monster of a kick and some chopped up vocal stabs. Here's hoping he comes to the UK in the future as his style would work.

Jean Bruce Rave Gener8tor (Nocturbulous)

Although not strictly techno, I have been starting quite a few sets with this blatant old skool ditty. Coming from France on the wicked Nocturbulous imprint, this EP boasts a selection of tracks that sound like they have come straight from 1991, and produced entirely on hardware. This is a refreshing change from many a soulless digital production of late, anyway no beating around the bush with their intention, Minimum Syndicat's '1991' is a rather sinister number with twisted stabs a plenty, but it's the Rave Gener8tor track by Jean Bruce that smashes it for me for just being so cheeky and playable. Hoovers and breaks treat us before oldskool piano fun and familiar vocals kick in! Check the remix by Altern-8's Mark Archer too.

Linus Quick Aida (Naked Lunch)

This was a rather nice surprise on Portugal's Naked Lunch imprint from Linus Quick and has been a feature of both my techno sets and my hard trance ones just for the sheer crossover appeal. The way the Klaudia Gawlas mix is both frenetic and quirky and has so much drive works exceptionally well.

Admittedly first impressions leave you thinking that this is all that this track is going to do but then a monster of a horn comes out of nowhere, repeatedly at various surprising intervals and then full chaos ensues. The other tracks on this EP are well suited to the more stripped down floors as well especially 'Galaxy Action', which is more than worthy of a spin.

I'm getting old. I know this because lots of nasty noise does my head in these days. So here we were listening to hardcore of varying nuance and getting older by the minute (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 23rd April). First up, local newbies, UPSURGE, went for the oldschool Agnostic Front approach: angry, shouty and riff-heavy. Not bad. Unfortunately, CAVALCADES' progressive blast was upended by a vocal death-howl that seemed wholly incongruous. GRAPPLER ran a far tighter, and meaner, ship – austerity running through their doomy riffola like a stick of rock. And nestled in amongst all the pain were BRUNEL with their sinewy, percussive post-punk. Phew!

On record, Brighton's THE PHYSICS HOUSE BAND have a fine line in post-prog widdlesome fun but in the flesh, their pompous bass lines and uncommunicative synth shapes were a chore (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 26th April). By contrast, Kent quartet, UP-C DOWN-C's post-rock-via-vintage-stoner beast of a sound was something that you rarely hear – like being trapped in an argument between Mogwai and Truckfighters – and thenceforth vowed to hear more often.

We didn't stay long at the annual workers' May-Day shindig (Devonport Guildhall, Plymouth, 4th May) but long enough to catch DMITRY and his brooding Soviet songs of revolution, replete with Nepalese singing bowl and children's chorus; and Chris Wheelchair in his HARIKIRI KARAOKE guise, spinning surreal keyboard yarns with a nod to Frank Sidebottom and a wink to your demented grandad. And the reason we didn't stay was to head into town for Imperfect Cinema's multimedia extravaganza of film and music, entitled The Takeover (Plymouth University, 4th May). The final piece, 'Home', featured a gliding visual snapshot of Plymouth and surrounding area accompanied by music from the hastily assembled IMPERFECT ORCHESTRA (featuring faces from Brunel, Damerels, Drexl and Head Of Programmes among others). The result of which was akin to looking out of a window on a pensive drive home from Dartmoor while listening to Lungfish (ask some post-punky street scruff). Pretty smart.

Bar-B-Gedd'on was a veggie-burger sizzling success (Tiki Bar, Plymouth, 5th May). Joyous duo, THE JERKS, sometimes sounded like Fugazi after a year jamming with Torche; while supreme garage-noise trio, DAMERELS, sometimes sounded like Fugazi after a year pumping iron. Un-Fugazi-like but equally competent were WOAHNOWS and their melody-rich moodswing punk rock; while openers, YOUNG ATTENBOROUGH and THE APOSTATES' endearing pop-punk set the tone.

Exeter Cavern hosted a disparate dish of international delights, although only catching the last song of Austria's splendid politicopunks, ASTPAI, was a tad frustrating (6th May). Next up, Ohio's THE SIDEKICKS proffered some rootsy rock'n'roll with a lovely demeanour, while Philadelphia's angular pop-punks, HOP ALONG, have a female singer with a wondrous, idiosyncratic voice that evokes feelings of love and desperation like no other. Here came trouble.

Of the best kind of course. Indeed, THE CUT UPS' venerable, heart-on-sleeve punk rock wouldn't be the same without a few wellaimed social(ist) barbs from vocalist, Jon Curtis. Bluegrass rock with ADHD? Los Angeles' OLD MAN MARKLEY were on hand to deliver: washboard, banjo, auto-harp, fiddle and whoops'n'hollers colliding like demented atoms. SMOKE OR FIRE's melodic punk seemed a little pedestrian after a soiree of inventive and atypical rock'n'roll but the Bostonians' track record guided them to safety.

It was patently obvious that Indiana's MURDER BY DEATH would slay all contenders this month with their new wave-imbued Americana (Dingwalls, London, 17th May). Releasing the spectre of Johnny Cash into Arcade Fire's living room, the band's versatility, intelligence and passion were as close to an epiphany as this weathered heart will experience. They deserve your attention. Go! We played too. Copious sweating, errant banjo strings and gremlins galore. Christ! See-ya bye.

The UK’s only action sports and music festival return to the Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet on 11-13 July with more music and more sport than ever before.
