Contents illustration by Jess John “My ‘hipster’ drawing was based on the youth subculture of today’s fashion and music. It points at trends in society and looks in to the pressures of what is meant to be ‘cool’. The idea of ‘cool’ and therefore the hipster culture that seems to be dominating the high street is weirdly uncomfortable, I tried to convey this within complex patterns in my drawing of the ‘hipster’”, explains Plymouth based illustrator Jess John, who did this piece entirely by black pens (plus a lot of time and patience). Jess has been working as an illustrator since graduating from Plymouth in 2011 in Fine Art. “With a lot of help and encouragement I picked up the pencils and ditched my contemporary practice and haven’t looked back since,” she tells us honestly. The team behind the legendary all nighter dance club, The Monastery have announced a series of reunion nights this summer, kicking off on 11 May at Bohemia, Torquay. For the unaware, Monastery was an all night dance club based in a converted church in the heart of Torquay; it opened every Saturday from 11pm until 7am, didn’t serve alcohol and had every big name Hard House D.J in the country playing there. It was a private members club with over 15,000 members from across the country and was full with 600 clubbers every single week. Unfortunately the club lost its license in 2001 but since then they have held three reunions all of which sold out. One of the team, Sally Harris said ”The Westcoutry clubbing scene has slowly been dying over the past few years, now it’s time to breathe some life back into it, bring back those nights where it didn’t matter what age you were, what you wore, whether you were gay or straight, black or white. All that mattered was that you all came together to enjoy yourselves, feel safe and escape the reality of real life for a few hours.” So with that in mind Sally and her team are starting putting on six events during 2013. She said “For those of you who experienced it all those years ago, you know what I’m talking about! For those who didn’t, you will soon realise what been part of the Monastery family is all about!” With a Hard House/ Hard Trance music policy expect a mix of new cutting edge music with a few of the old favourite classics thrown in. Headliners for the 11 May event include Andy Whitby & Cally Gage, alongside the old residents Kev Smoothound Walters and Ben McGowan. More info at www.themonasterytorquay.co.uk

Entering on a rapid ascent from recording a self- funded album as an unsigned artist in her parent’s house, to being signed to Columbia only four records in, Lucy Rose has swept effortlessly to the forefront of the Indie scene. 247’s Lucy Reynolds talks to the porcelainskinned siren about Counting Crows and success ahead of her dates in Exeter this month and headlining at Lemonfest and Beachbreak Live in June

magazine
www.247magazine.co.uk
Modest and humble in her approach to her recent success, the 23-year-old from Warwickshire found her self having recorded her debut album as an unsigned artist to reaching number 13 in the UK Album charts. Lucy explains ‘I wasn’t really thinking about it [success] when I was recording, I was so pleased to finally be getting the songs out of my mind and creating them in real life’. Ever since the release of her album Lucy has been in high demand: She recently returned from a tour of the USA and Canada where she fulfilled her wish of cruising around, driving for ’10 hours a day- and I only got pulled over once! She explained that ‘it was scary heading over there, being so big and impossible but it was so much fun!’ With 2012 being so successful: Playing an exclusive ‘3D’ Binaural set for Radio 1’s Rob Dan Bank show: ‘it was nice to play songs acoustically and hear them exactly how they were played in the room’ and the self- proclaimed unexpected success of the album it is no wonder she was asked to tour with the mighty Counting Crows; ‘I got a phone call late one night when I was playing Back Gammon saying we had just been offered the Europe/UK support, did I want to? Of course I said yes immediately’. Lucy starts her tour with the Crows on the 16th April through to the 26th. Touring does not end there however, she begins her first Headline UK tour on the 27th April in Leeds carrying right through to the Summer festivals. Touring must be so effortless and easy for Lucy Rose you would think, yet she explains ‘My nerves will never leave me and it’s pretty crazy going on tour and playing music to so many people now but I appreciate it more than anything…’
The latest single: Shiver has a beautiful rawness to its whispered sound allowing art to imitate life giving this impeccably written song real depth. Moreover it is accompanied by a haunting video that, as Lucy puts it, ‘makes the viewer remember everything they want to forget’ it has already reached well over 300,000 views on YouTube and is set to be a very successful single. Yet Lucy remains so endearingly humble: ‘I don’t know what makes a successful record at all, it’s just what came out when I sat down one day with my guitar. When I wrote it, I didn’t think anyone would really hear it’ perhaps this is what makes her music so attractive; she writes for herself about the real and tangible experiences. It’s not all about ramming the music down our throats and selling records, she has said in the past that she wanted the growth of the album to be organic, through word of mouth. Well… it certainly worked. It is no wonder she has been asked to play at the all new Beachbreak Live event in Newquay on 20-24th June and headline Lemonfest on the 1st of June in Newton Abbot, we are safe in the knowledge that she will make both of these festivals unmissable. We asked Lucy what she thought of the local talent such as the hugely successful Ben Howard and upcoming artist: Ryan Keen: ‘I have played with both artists and both are great. So I’m guessing the South West is providing’ The effortlessness of her talent is inspirational and well suited to our county- as she puts it, ‘Devon and Cornwall is a beautiful part of the world’ so make sure you don’t miss out on this one…

Cadence Recordings Independent South West based label, Cadence Recordings have been at the heart of the drum ‘n’ bass scene for the last 15 years. 247’s Aldo Vanucci catches up with the labels Ste Gould and talks proudest moments, One Direction, ice cream flavours and doing it for yourself

magazine
www.247magazine.co.uk
Tell us a bit about yourself and your record label? Cadence Recordings is run by myself, Ste Gould, and my old friend, Chris Clark. We began jointly from a frame of mind of wanting to create a future in the music business doing something we enjoy and are passionate about. By chance we met Simon Huxtable AKA Aural Imbalance who was looking for an outlet to showcase his production skills, while we were seeking a direction regarding music policy. Cadence was born and shortly our first vinyl 12" was releases early 1998. Cadence exists to release the very best in deep emotive spaced out drum ‘n’ bass. It's a massive part of who we are and it's a labour of love. You've been around since the early days of the Internet – how has running a label changed in that time? Yeah well, things have changed loads in terms of the way we operate...In the early days there were more proper record shops that stocked our physical releases, sadly it’s more virtual stores. These days it's a lot more digital in terms of distribution and we keep physical sales more exclusive. It's sad in some ways as we do love the vinyl but in other ways we get more music out quicker from the point of signing so our listeners get more fresh music more regularly which can only be a good thing. The online world is great from a social sense and it's nice being in regular contact with the labels fans from round the world. If you could sign anyone who would it be? I can honestly say that I think we are already releasing some of the best artists already...if I had to go for a big name I'd like to get Goldie on board for what's he's done for D&B and that he's from Wolves my old stomping ground. Goldie released a tune years ago called Sensual and it's just exquisite so I'd love to release something like that. If you had to compare your label to an ice cream flavour what wouldit be? Rum ‘n’ raisin…a connoisseur’s choice for those that know. Can you give any upcoming producers some tips on how to get ahead? Do it because you love it and make music for yourself. Find your own sound and express yourself on the deepest level. It's all about realizing what's important, which I think is to truly love what you do. My dad is still waiting for me to get a proper job, how do you explain what you do to the older generation? My folks get it...my dad used to be my drive me to and from the block of flats that I did pirate radio on when I was 15 [laughs]. Chris has been around music all his life, his Dad is a special Jazz drummer, which help gave him the passion. They're into the music, which is really cool and they're starting to see things really picking up for us in what we do. One Direction are thinking of trying a drum n bass tune, would you release it? (Ste)Nah, unless it was ridiculously brilliant and ground breaking…so it's still nah. (Chris) Yes, especially if Aural Imbalance gets too remix and could help support future music on our labels.
www.247magazine.co.uk
Which film or book has had a big effect on you and what you do? I love Bladerunner – it’s a classic film visually but the soundtrack is amazing and I know its hugely influential to many. I'm not reading many books these days but the last one was superstar dj's by Dom Phillips – I enjoyed it as it referenced the era that I grew up in and was first immersed in electronic music , I've been reading electronic music mags from the very beginning…I remember the first copies of mixmag etc.
“...my dad used to be my drive me to and from the block of flats that I did pirate radio on when I was 15 ...” My so-called-career has been governed by three words: determination over ability - what three words describe yours? Labour of lovehalf of the year. Post-tour, whWhat's been your proudest moment as a label boss? Wow. I can't some it up into one instance but over the years there have been many magic moments like getting the 1st 12" vinyls back from pressing and seeing the finished product of Aural imbalances Album Legacy to reading emails from people all around the world sharing their stories of where they heard the labels music. I know we're both proud of the friendships that have grown over time not only for us as label bosses but with the artists and fans alike. Our commitment to the labels in changing times, not giving up. Plus the pleasure of releasing the deep, atmospheric electronic associated with Cadence. If you could go back 10 years would you do anything differently? Certainly not, being a creative enterprise it's something you become passionate about, love and enjoy ultimately become…once the music gets you it takes up residence in your soul. All the lessons you learn along the way certainly help you appreciate what you've got. How does being based in the southwest affect what you do? Living in the southwest is great from an inspiration point of view. The coastal scenes definitely shine through in the labels identity. From the early days our music has been international which is great thing, we've had an online presence for sometime which certainly helps.

Meet Bristol’s new supercharged new rockabilly project, that transforms pop songs with a whole lot of bass-slappin’, fret-twanging and snare-shuffling How did you guys meet and when did you form The Rocker Covers? We were playing together in other bands performing original material. Then while on tour in Germany in 2010 with one of the bands, there was a day off and we thought we’d go busking. We picked a few classic pop and rock songs to busk, and people seemed to really like it. We went busking again when we returned to the UK and people kept coming up to us, asking us to play bars and private parties etc. and it really developed from there. We recorded the Revved Up album, and were offered more and more gigs and festivals to play. We love your mechanics outfits – did you used to work in a garage, or do you just dig cars and stuff? [Lughs] No, we haven’t ever worked in garages, but The Rocker Covers name is of course a play on words, and a rocker cover being part of a car engine. We do all love vintage cars and 50s music, so the retro mechanics clothes seemed to fit!
Of course there will be more classic rock and pop songs done in The Rocker Covers’ style, but there are a few more flavours on the new album, including country, ska and rhythm ’n’ blues. Where did you record the new album? Everything is recorded ourselves in Scott’s own Dog House Music Studio. That way we can take time to play around with guitar sounds etc., and as we rehearse there, we sometimes arrange songs and record them straight away. When can we expect it? The album just needs mixing and mastering, so we hope it will be released in the summer. Do you write your own songs too, or is it strictly covers only? We are still involved in other projects playing original stuff, and the whole idea of The Rocker Covers is to play our retro style versions of modern songs, so it’ll stay strictly covers!
We heard that Revved Up, was recorded on a Revox tape machine? Yeah, we record everything ourselves and have a 1967 valve tape machine to warm things up!
As a band, what is your long term goal? We love making music, recording, releasing records and playing gigs, and we plan to keep doing that for as long a possible.
Awesome. Tell us about your success on YouTube. The video for “American Idiot” has had a lot of hits on YouTube. We recorded the video in our friend’s hot rod shop, called Valley Gas. It was great fun making the video, surrounded by all those cool cars, while the mechanics kept working!
We’ve seen you guys live a couple of times now – you really do put on a sterling show. Is playing live what’s it’s all about for you? We really enjoy playing live, and we think and hope that comes across to the audience.
How do you decide which songs to give your unique rockabilly twist? Are these songs you particularly like yourselves, or just those you know will work well? Generally, we try and pick songs that will stand the test of time, not throw away pops songs. But occasionally we choose a song we don’t really like, to see what it would have sounded like if it was made in 1950s or 60s. What can we expect from your new album – more of the same or something different? www.247magazine.co.uk
How do you find Bristol’s music scene? We live in and around Bristol now, but actually Scott is from Newbury and Kris and Bob are from Worcester. The Rocker Covers are Kris ‘Rock-It’ There are a lot venues Passmore, Scott ‘Mad Man’ Milsom and bands in Bristol and (Coffin Nails and Rock-It Dogs) and Ian ‘Boss’ Bostic (Rock-It Dogs). See they we have played at quite play next month at Ink Fest in Weston a few places in the city, Super Mare and keep an eye on www. but we’ve always enjoyed therockercovers.com for more gig taking to the road and dates and to watch their videos. playing further a field too. magazine | 17

Pro surfer Alan Stokes from Newquay talks about his passion, lifestyle and being an Animal Pro Rider

fter discovering a foam belly board behind the garden shed in Aldershot, Alan moved to Cornwall with his family at the tender age of 6, taking the belly board with him. Since then he has been enthusiastically riding waves and is now a pro surfer sponsored by Animal.
Surfing isn’t simply a sport or a job to Alan; it’s a lifestyle that he illustrates as a “healthy addiction that helps me makes sense of the world”. Sharing his passion with his sisters and dad, Alan surfs every day and even managed to bag a fellow pro surfer girlfriend. Whilst growing up, Alan looked up to other pro surfers, “Kelly Slater and Tom Curren were my greatest influences, their style and approach to riding waves really got me thinking”.
positively. It “makes it more accessible to people and is a sport that makes you feel good”, which he wants to share with people. Whilst surfing in Cornwall all year round, Alan still enjoys getting away in the winter when the waters turn icy cold and injuries become more likely to occur. Australia’s beautiful coastlines and amazing waves are another favourite attraction of Alan’s when Cornwall’s weather turns chilly. His favourite competition is currently the British Nationals as it was “held in good solid waves on my local beach in Newquay, making it pretty special for me.” Apart from British competitions, Alan also enjoys competing in Brazil, “because the people are so passionate over there”.
“Surfing is a healthy addiction Alan has been a team rider for Animal since he was 14 years old. that helps me Cornwall played a huge part of Alan’s They have helped him carve out childhood; he believes you become his professional competitive surfing make sense of a product of your environment. career, which he is extremely proud So growing up on the beach and of and is glad to be involved in their immersing himself in the surrounding the world” surfing history. Animal are one of the only environment heavily influenced him. Alan’s brands started in Great Britain that active lifestyle and personality meant that surfing would always have been attractive to him, but he feels the “underlying pull of surfing is just being out there in natures raw energy and tapping into it when you ride a wave”.
The slower paced Cornish momentum also contributes towards the surfing way of life. “Cornwall is beautiful and the people are laid back and friendly” which supports the stereotype surrounding it. Alan so deeply embraces surfing that he has no idea what he would be doing if he wasn’t a professional surfer. When it comes to surfing locations and competitions, Alan still loves Fistral beach where he first learnt to ride waves. In order to prepare for competitions and keep training, he surfs all over the world, yet Cornwall is always special to him – “the surf is challenging and fun, I’ve travelled so much, but I’ve never found anywhere like here, it’s a very diverse and exciting place for me”. Proud to be Cornish, Alan celebrates Newquay’s recent blossoming as the UK’s surfing capital

have made a name for themselves among their larger American rivals. Animal’s sponsor has helped Alan progress, not only financially by making him able to go out and pursue his sport, but the people he works with at Animal are supportive and passionate about what they do and their team riders which has greatly helped him over the years.
When Alan isn’t surfing, which isn’t very often as he surfs all day every day, he plays the guitar and writes music. He is also very interested in photography, mainly of water and waves… Finally, I asked Alan to sum up surfing in one word, he answered ‘ unbelievable’. An answer that comes hardly surprisingly for someone who literally eats, breaths and sleeps his passion of riding the waves.

Eating Out
Set yourself up for the day with one of these hearty breakfasts. Photos courtesy of Friska
Breakfast like a king Plymouth

Me N U
Friska
The Cosy Club
The arty and stylish Me N U (pronounced “me & you”) specialises in Tapas, and they also serve a top-notch breakfast every day until noon. Its interior is contemporary and chic, with plenty of light to show the variety of paintings on its walls. There are also images of iconic stars such as Elvis, Sean Connery and The Beatles, and on the Saturday morning I visited the place was bubbling with a friendly crowd, munching away to the gentle sounds of Roy Orbison and other similar songs from his era. As well as the regular full English, breakfasts include smoked salmon with scrambled egg and also a full vegetarian cooked breakfast, which is what I had. The scrambled eggs were cooked to absolute perfection - creamy and fluffy, and came lightly and subtly garnished, served with quality granary toasted bread. The breakfast also included two vegetarian sausages of very high quality – crispy, tasty and soft, lightly grilled tomatoes, beans and mushrooms. And you get sauté potatoes, a nice touch and a refreshing change from the standard hash browns. The coffee was delicious with a rich texture and nutty taste, and so I just had to have another. With its generous portions, tasty food, friendly service and good quality all the way, Me N U ticks every box.
Recently opened and just a five minute walk from Temple Meads, Friskas has a lovely open feel with big central benches, a few smaller tables and a couple of breakfast bars for the solo eater. You can also see right through to the kitchen, which always shows confidence in the quality of the food. There’s hot and cold lunches and an evening menu too with plenty of global dishes; Vietnamese noodles, Malaysian Laska and Mexican pulled pork. There’s an international feel to the breakfast options too. A peanut butter and jelly toastie is second only to waffles as the definitive American starter, but this meat fiend couldn’t get past the Spanish eggs. Two chunky slices of proper crusty brown bread get a poached egg apiece with a generous portion of chorizo crumbs and parsley scattered all over. The portion size is just enough to fill you up without feeling guilty and the firm chorizo goes beautifully with the soft and runny egg. I’d prefer a bit more heat from the chorizo but then I’m a sucker for punch. A freshly-squeezed OJ rounds it off nicely (and properly fresh it is too). There’s even more choice on the breakfast menu at weekends, so I’ll have to find an excuse to come back again.
In contrast to the imposing grand facade of Taunton's Cosy Club, the interior, which is flooded with natural light thanks to the huge windows, is an eclectic mix of wood, mismatched vintage furniture and exposed brick. The warm feeling I got from the cool surroundings extended to the breakfast menu (actually brunch and they serve it until 6pm…). Aside from the run of the mill full English breakfast and vegetarian counterpart, there are lots of exciting dishes to choose from including steak and eggs, ham hock hash and creamed scrambled eggs. I was feeling a little eggy myself, so opted for the ‘cosy eggs’. - two poached eggs with hollandaise sauce on a toasted English muffin with smoked bacon (although I could have chosen spinach and mushrooms, or paid £1 extra for Severn and Wye smoked salmon or chorizo sausage). The English muffin was fluffy and light, layered with a generous portion of tasty (and not fatty) smoked bacon, with the perfectly cooked poached eggs on top. I often find restaurants ruin things with over use of hollandaise sauce, so was impressed the The Cosy Club used sparingly with extra on the side – perfecto! My breakfast cost £5.95 and was worth every penny – recommended.

New Music Backbone
SAVAGES
Silence Yourself (Matador) More wonderfully pretentious than a sackful of Wilde quotes, London all-woman quartet, Savages, kick off their début album with an aural excerpt from a revered John Cassavetes flick before diving head-first into a black soup of Siouxsie howls, creepy guitar pirouettes and black steel rhythms. Despite all the self-aggrandizing talk, they deliver a hefty goth punch, taking a '70s-riven template of post-punk despair/desire and forging anti-pop future-classics like 'I Am Here', 'City's Full' and the uber-volatile 'Husbands'; with Jehnny Beth's chillto-the-bone trills'n'whoops doffing a cap to Polly Harvey, Patti Smith, Diamanda Galas, Crass and the aforementioned Siouxsie Sioux. As far as pinpoint accuracy in post-punk revivalism goes, these London lasses have fucking nailed it.
ICE, SEA, DEAD PEOPLE If It’s Broken, Break It More (Broken Toy Records)
It's a fine line between dissonant art-rock and childish incompetence. In the hands of ISDP things err towards the latter. Adolescent petulance abounds, from that stupid moniker through to the stroppy vocals and the songs' dogged insistence on going nowhere whilst probably thinking that they're the first to go there. It's fine if you're a 16-year old music fan and you only listen to what Kerrang! thrusts in your face every Wednesday but if hastily assembled rot like 'Ultra Silence' and 'Pro Life Forever' is the best we can do after The Fall, Jesus & Marychain, Mclusky and Part Chimp then the future of homegrown anti-pop is nothing but shit-slops in a coke can. Ice, Sea, Awful Band. Get it? Don't.
DINOSAUR PILEUP Nature Nurture (So)
Matt Bigland is a skinny man with a big vision, and it's so singular that no-one else is allowed in to spoil it. So this sophomore album is, once again, all his own work, from hi-hats to bottom bass string, and puts paid to the belief that solo venture equals no quality filter. 'Nature Nurture' is brimful of A-grade, post-grunge angst-pop, with more blatant pickpocketing than a Dan Brown novel. 'Peninsula' sounds like a smarter Ash; 'Heather' bulldozes in on a bass-growling Nirvana riff; and 'White T-Shirt And Jeans' (and others) revels in its languorous Weezer worldview. Once you forget to recall comparisons the likes of 'Draw A Line', 'Start Again' and 'Lip Hook Kiss' are simply gut-punchingly wonderful.
IGGY & THE STOOGES Ready To Die (Fat Possum)
In the 40 years since Iggy & The Stooges seminal 'Raw Power', rock'n'roll has undergone more reinventions than Howard Marks. Unfortunately, despite the Godlike Genius of Iggy Pop, and despite the huge legacy that The Stooges left in their wake, and despite the collective years of experience on board, 'Ready To Die' is a pretty conservative and lifeless dribble of a record that only serves to highlight Iggy Pop's waning vigour. Which is a shame when you consider that the neoGoth stomp of 'Burn' and the cringe-worthy 'Sex & Money' would probably have sounded vital and cutting edge before the mid-'70s were rinsed of any rebellious worth. As it is, that title may allude to a different meaning than was initially intended.

THE PHYSICS HOUSE BAND
Horizons/Rapture (Blood & Biscuits)
You can thank, chronologically, Magma, Gong, Sparks, Cardiacs, Jaga Jazzist, Battles and Mars Volta for the general acceptance of prog/math rock in the 21st century underground. And you can thank youthful Brighton trio, The Physics House Band, for picking up the baton and running with it into a netherworld of twinkling, jizzy-jazz polyrhythms and synthetic graffiti on this, their début instrumental mini-album. However, theirs is a more reined in beast, the likes of 'Obelisk Monolith' (pow!) and 'Abraxical Solapse' (boff!) relying on relatively easily-digested prog tropes that retain a certain warmth within the frankly illegal time changes and staccato wizardry. Ridiculous yet charmingly so. Technical yet humanly so. Nonsense yet brilliantly so. You get the drift.
GOLDBLADE
The Terror Of Modern Life (Overground) Straddling the line between sonic situationism and Johnny Bravo cartooncore, Goldblade have always been the court jesters at the modern punk party, getting more absurd with every bare-chested strut and stolen riff. Six albums in and they've expanded their range to please all the punky people all the time. 'Someone Stole My Brain' is the Pistols-goindustrial, 'They Kiss Like Humans...' pilfers from early '80s Britpunks GBH, 'Hey You! Elastic Face' is overcooked Social Distortion twang, while the sub-Clash, cod-reggae of 'Serious Business' is a travesty. Throughout all these badly titled ditties, John Robb is warbling and yelping like someone who's never heard a song in his life. I like the man, I like the politics, but this is a bit of a mess.
SOUTHPORT Southern Soul (Various Artists)
Old punks on the rampage! Indeed, you may remember Simon Wells from the first incarnation of London pop-punk legends, Snuff. Well move with the times guv'nor, that was donkey's years ago. His 'new' band, Southport, have been around since the turn of the millennium but they've really hit their stride with 'Southern Soul' – an album that cares not for the surplus frills and spills of their youngers, relying instead on straight-ahead, heart-felt melodic punk motifs (to wit: brilliant opener 'Slide') with elements of Teenage Fanclub-esque country rock (to wit: the bittersweet 'The Last Time'). And there's a spiffing punkified version of 'I Shot The Sheriff' that pushes Wells' voice into territory he should venture far more often. Tops.
BAD IDEAS Compromise (Fond Of Life)
Earnest acoustic-rock is Sam Cook's stock-in-trade and his Leeds-via-Lincoln ensemble, Bad Ideas, have steadily been honing their craft over the past few years with a modest amount of success. Their third long-player, 'Compromise', betrays Sam's love of melodic punk-ish standard-bearers from The Gaslight Anthem ('Shells & Stones') to Alkaline Trio ('Lincoln') to Frank Turner ('Simple Connections') whist never losing sight of his own inherent creativity and inner voice. And what an outer voice! – an emotionally fraught and understated warble that manages to sidestep pop-punk pitfalls and remain accessible and believable. Given the quality of these songs, and with a hefty leg-up, Bad Ideas could easily cut it with the top dogs. Over to you.
Louk
Bodyscrub Ethereal [Phobiq]
Sasha Carassi's Phobiq imprint has been a regular favourite of yours truly for quite some time, you can usually rely on them providing some speaker shaking big room techno that you know will work well in those peak time sets. However, this new release by Bodyscrub proves its' place as quite a quirky little set opener as well (as I found out on Friday when I checked it out and opened my set at Colabs with it). With two mixes to choose from, it's the remix from Drumcode favourite Sam Paganini that is the version of choice, building really well with filtered synth stabs and a twisted percussive groove that builds really effectively and certainly sets the mood.
Samuel L Session Dystopian Life [Klap Klap]
It's quite often the simplest of grooves that work the best in a set and this production from Samuel L Session definitely hits the spot. It's been such an inspiration that I played it at both Colabs and the Country Club Reunion this weekend and it was one of the standout tracks of both sets. I've often found with Samuel L Session's work, since his early material way back when he was releasing on Cycle that he concentrates on injecting some real funk into a track. Some rather intricate drum work comes into play with an absolute monster of a synth and a funky vocal, which on first listen begs to be played. Can see this being cained all summer.
Dynamo City
One Night In Hackney (2013 Mixes) [Stay Up Forever Remixes] There is no denying the sheer impact this London based parody of 'One Night in NYC' by The Horrorist had when it first touched down in 2003. The sheer cheek of the lyrics detailing a visit to a free party in London and the blatant alcohol and narcotic consumption that followed always manages to make many of us smile. Stepping up to the task of remixing are Chris Liberator and Sterling Moss, who tweak the acid riff to new proportions, Pet Duo who take the Schranz route and Phuture Doom who manage to provide a reasonable interpretation. However it's the laid back and rather spellbinding remix from D.A.V.E The Drummer that wins pride of place in the box for me.
Timothy Alexander Sentience [Sonic Groove]
This is quite a diverse release, but one thing that's appealing about the whole package is all four tracks are dark and broody. While Timothy Alexander is not a name this author is familiar with, Adam X's Sonic Groove label has been ever consistent with releasing some charming material for the past eighteen years. On 'Sentience' it's cut number II that is the highlight, with a distorted kick drum underpinning a solid groove, reminding me of the rather wonderful 'Pitch Hiker' by 'Pilldriver'. It may sound quite simplistic in arrangement but when played at the right time of night, this can really help develop a set into some more aggressive places and certainly received a good reaction on the weekend.

The Primitives
Everything’s Shining Bright (Cherry Red) Geniuses in the art of marrying sweetness with punk rock, The Primitives are a hugely influential femalefronted band from the mid-’80s. Anyone who loves Veronica Falls’ new album (or pretty much anything on labels like Slumberland and Fortuna POP) needs this two-disc set, which is the band’s entire output on their own independent label, Lazy Records. It captures the band at the rawest, just before they hit the big time with Crash (which is actually included, but as a very early rough demo). Highlights: Stop Killing Me, Buzz Buzz Buzz, Really Stupid and Thru the Flowers. Look out for Scared to Get Happy, a various artists box set dedicated entirely to this era, also on Cherry Red, coming very soon.
Morrissey Kill Uncle (Parlophone)
Another gem from the early ‘90s is given the remaster treatment, this time with a complete makeover, including a totally different sleeve and artwork to the original, a different running order and two bonus tracks sprinkled into it, rather than shoved on at the end. This was the Mozfather’s second solo album, just before long-term collaborators Boz Boorer and Alain Whyte came onboard. In many ways it’s different to his other albums, with more subtleties, such as the swing on Sing Your Life. Madness producers Langer & Winstanley are at the helm, and the band’s bass guitarist Mark “Bedders” Bedford is also present (he really shines on Found Found Found). And we forgive him the dodgy Asian Rut.
Inspiral Carpets Life- Extended Edition (Mute)
With the recent interest (and mass hysteria) for the early ‘90s works of Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, it seems natural that fellow Mancs, Inspiral Carpets should go for a piece of the action. And so here is the expanded version of their classic debut, padded out with non-album EP tracks and a live DVD, recorded at Manchester G-Mex, at the height of their popularity. Since the ‘90s, everything‘s been revived constantly, so it’s hard for anything to sound dated. Add to this the Inspirals’ love of punked-up psych-pop/garage, and they actually remain very current. And the themes of unemployment and domestic violence on This Is How It Feels are more relevant now than ever.
Ghost Capsules Ghost Capsules (O Solo)
This electronic quartet is the latest project from Tim Simenon of Bomb the Bass. Vocalist, Laura Gomez has a dark folk singing style, which could fit as comfortably into a spooky setting such as say, Marissa Nadler’s eerie psych folk. But it suits Simenon and co’s twisted electro house very nicely, floating on top of rigid and meaty basslines. House, electro and techno have been around for decades now, so what really counts now is creativity and flow. This works as an album, even though a lot of the tracks sound similar. It’s almost like a DJ mix, with a girl singing on top. And Tim Simenon’s been doing this since day zero, so relax folks: you’re in good hands!

Anna von Hausswolff Ceremony (City Slang)
After impressing us all at her recent Bristol gig with Efterklang, this album proves Anna Von Hausswolff is a true gem in this pop princess world in which we live. Dark and brooding, like Joy Division crossed with the soundtrack to an indie flick set in the depths of a dying forest – this is music with real depth and the power to conjure up vivid images. Anna’s vocals don’t kick in until halfway through track two, and when they do, the comparison to Kate Bush almost makes itself. ‘Mountains Crave’ employs that Anna Calvi grandeur, while a beautiful organ sound introduces us to ‘Goodbye’ – accessibly eerie punctuated with stark, spellbinding vocals a la John Grant. A mighty fine album.
Deerhunter Monomania (4AD)
Deerhunter is back – after a cracking offering in 2010 with ‘Halcyon Digest’, the group has come up with a modern-day take on the early Noughties NYC avant garde - with a nod towards the spic sounds of Joy Formidable. Organised confusion makes this album sound messy, but in a good way. Like Beck backed by a band of 20-something rockers. With catchy beats and scuzzy guitars, there are definite hints of The Strokes here, mixed with a Grouplove energy to create cool, party songs, dancefloor fillers. Lyrically, it’s pretty sound and even cutesy in places, with "I've been lookin for some humming bees." What’s more, they even commandeer some Queen lyrics: "I'm a poor boy, from a poor family."
Gabrielle Aplin English Rain (Parlophone)
Opener ‘Panic Cord’ is a sweet, soothing song with sniffs of Lisa Loeb; that is until Aplin breathes ‘Do Rah Me Fah So La Ti’ – which is a tad cringesome. ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ warrants comparisons to Ed Sheeran, the simple guitar picking, sincere lyrics and earnest vocals to the point where you wonder if it’s a cover (that comes later in the form of ‘Power of Love’ from the John Lewis Xmas ad). ‘How Do You Feel Today’ has a more mature sound, deeper tones and folky vibes (complete with sweet strings) akin to Lucy Rose. The second half of the album, from ‘Home’ and ‘Salvation’ ventures into Adele territory in terms of power and poignancy – though things tail off towards the end.
St Pierre Snake Invasion Everyone’s Entitled To My Opinion Beardown Records)
They've been making waves in Bristol and beyond of late, gaining a rep for putting on outstanding live shows but how does their EP compare? Opening track 'Call The Coroner', launches headfirst into manic screams which punch you in the gut. Punky, energetic and fun; Bristol's answer Pulled Apart By Horses and good bedfellows with Exeter rebel-rousers The Computers. 'U.S.S.A' is a forceful belter, Rage Against The Machine worthy guitars meet more impressive vocals. 'Hey Kids! Do The Choke Stroke' opens with some almost Kings of Leon-esque vocals and pretty tame clapping action, but builds into a Rocket From The Crypt-influenced crescendo with hints of Buzzcocks. Saving the best til last, 'Say No To Stop Motion' harnesses that raw Nirvana appeal of tracks such as 'Aneurysm' cept this is more in your face. lads. Please.

Bomb The Bass In The Sun O Solo records
Back around the late 80s Bomb The Bass hit the number one spot in the UK chart with a record called Beat Dis, entirely made up of other peoples records, now sixth album later they release their sixth album. Times have changed and so has their approach, now made up of a vocalist and producer Tim Simenon, this album comes on like a left field Prodigy album, nice choppy beats, sonic assaults but with lush vocals and melodies. The samples have gone replaced by layered synths and electronic strings but the music is still as essential as ever. Bomb the Bass have had peaks and lows in their career, this feels like they are about to crest another hill, if you like to get lost in music or want something interesting for a long journey then this is for you.
Various Artists America 2 Kitsune
After last months Paris collection, uber cool and always top notch label Kitsune come with a slice of American synth paradise. The tracks are pretty much split between dance floor and head music but all retain killer productions. In the past Kitsune have pushed names like Bloc Party, Klaxons and Two Door Cinema Club with dancey electro mixes, no one on this album is anywhere near that level but some surely will be soon. I love everything that Gigamesh has done and the track on here is no exception and the album opener by Ghost is my new favourite sunset song. Newcomers Haerts deliver a pure pop hit with a nice edge to it. If you like French electronic music with catchy hooks and stella productions then this album is for you.
Dope D.O.D. Da Roach 3s music
I like hip hop. I like a lot of different styles. This album is pretty much sold to me with everything I usually dislike, dark, industrial and deep. Though the guests are dope as hell, Redman, Kool Keith and Noisia. That said, maybe it's the grey weather, maybe it's the carb overload my body is struggling with but I'm really hooked into this, as is Liam Howlett who gave it props. This is dirty, mean, jump around and mosh hip hop that is never gonna bother the charts but I can see doing very well, gathering fans from rock, metal and hip hop areas. For this who remember what it was like when Adam F was working with a list rappers this is what this feels like to me.

Late Night Tales After Dark label tbc by ben at echo empire The late night tales compilations have usually gotten big name djs and producers to compile some of their favourite tracks, the albums usually give an insight into their tastes and what inspired them, as well as bringing to the fore some wicked lost classics. This album does the same but the compiler isn't the usual household name, but he should be. Bill Brewster co writer of extremely authoritative books about music and djing, so as you would expect this has some amazing tunes on it, most of these tunes I don't know and pretty much all I would buy having heard them. This is a dubbed out session, perfect for getting warmed up for a night out or winding down after one, I've spent my entire adult life collecting music and this guy and his music selection makes me realise I need to work harder. www.247magazine.co.uk

Media Internships If you’re focused on getting yourself a career in the media, don’t underestimate the importance of doing an internship. Careers in media have never been so popular and their have never been more graduates, keen to get that all important first step on the career ladder. As great as getting yourself a degree or equivalent qualification is, it’s simply not enough to get you a job anymore. The people who get the hotly contested media jobs, are those who have an edge and nothing gives you an edge like the practical hands on experience you get from being an intern. Internships are typically unpaid, and last from a few weeks to a few months. You can expect to be treated as one of the team and to get a good overview of how the company you intern with operates. Your mentor should provide you with a varied workload and offer feedback on any work you do, as well as letting you observe anything of interest that’s going on. Impress your mentor with a can-do attitude and you may land yourself a job – a willingness to work for free in return for experience speaks volumes of your dedication and strength of character. Remember that they’ll be well connected within the media industry, so even if their isn’t a vacancy where you intern, they may well put in a good word with someone else or provide you with the killer reference that lands you your dream job. Interested? Start by identifying where you’d like to go. Somewhere that fits your interests and goals, but also somewhere practical – you need to be able to get there regularly and be on time. Write or send an email to the person in charge, making sure you find out their name and address it to them personally, be keen and enthusiastic and sell yourself with examples of your work. How could they resist?
Past 247 Interns where are they now? Paul Evans is now editor of Surf Europe. Mark Gurney produces a youth magazine Lauren Taverner Brown works for Coffin on Cake PR Rachael D'Cruze is now editor of 247 magazine and freelances for national consumer magazines too.

This Hollywood haven was run by the artist’s father, Max Lewin, an occasional actor and immigrant from Europe. Chez Paulette was so smooth that a set of the café was featured, with Max as host, in the detective series 77 Sunset Strip. Chez Paulette has been reconstructed again, this time in Plymouth. Come along and experience that lure of the after-dark; sip an espresso, watch a detective movie, and bring that European culture that travelled to Hollywood back again. www.247magazine.co.uk

Films
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (3D) Released: 9 May Dir: J.J. Abrams Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve 2012/US/TBC
Load the photon torpedoes and watch out for those pesky Klingons as the USS Enterprise is heading back at warp speed to the big screen after 2009’s successful reboot. This time round Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) has to lead a manhunt for an individual called John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), who is rumoured to be the illustrious villain of Treks of yesteryear Khan. He has launched an attack on Earth and Starfleet. Thankfully the outstanding cast and director from the previous film are still on board and with the latest version in 3D this could be one to keep the Trekkies happy for a light-year or two.
DEAD MAN DOWN (15)
Released: May 3 Dir: Niels Arden Oplev Starring: Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace and Dominic Cooper 2012/US/118 min This stylish New York crime thriller’s plot mixes equals parts of twisted double crossing of The Departed with the revenge mechanics of Kill Bill. Victor (Colin Farrell) is gangster with a grudge against his crime kingpin, Alphonse (Dominic Cooper). He is secretly seeking vengeance for the havoc that his boss has wrought on his family. But Victor falls for a young woman who discovers his plan and blackmails him to undertake retribution on her behalf. This should be dark, gritty and punchy entertainment.
EPIC 3D (TBC)
Released: 24 May Director: Chris Wedge Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Beyoncé Knowles 2012/US/TBC The director of Ice Age turns his animated magic to this tale of a teenager who finds herself transported to a deep forest where a battle between the forces of good and evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group of characters in order to save their world and return to hers. Should be fun for the kids and hopefully epic.
THE GREAT GATSBY 3D (TBC)
Released:16 May Dir: Baz Luhrmann Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire 2012/US/TBC Glitzy adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, where the downtrodden Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is lured into the lavish world of playboy Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). But Nick soon discovers that although Gatsby’s life might seem like a glamorous affair it is just as emotionally fraught and tragic as everyone else. The novel the film is based on is an American classic and if anyone can do the source material justice it’s Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge) who should provide plenty of visual pizzazz.
THE EYE OF THE STORM (15)
FAST & FURIOUS 6
THE HANGOVER PART III (TBC)
This film is a drama about a family who are making heavy weather of the slow death of the head of the family Elizabeth Hunter, (Charlotte Rampling). She is a overbearing mother who is in controlling of all her staff and children lives. As her obedient son (Geoffrey Rush) and daughter (Judy Davis) are drawn to her deathbed she reveals a secret that shakes the very foundations of this once stable family. This film features a great cast and should be worth a watch for the performances alone.
Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) enlists the help of Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker) and their team to help bring a rival gang to justice in exchange for clean criminal records. Expect plenty of shinning cars and explosive chases in this sixth film in the series (when will they ever stop making them!).
It’s third time lucky for the Wolfpack as Phil (Bradley Cooper), Allen (Zach Galifianakis) and Stu (Ed Helms) go on a road-trip that can only end up in drunken, drug-induced mess the following morning. According to the poster this is part of a trilogy, the cynic inside me says this is merely a sequel rather than the end of a narrative arch. Anyway, hopefully it will be as funny as the first film and leave the stag party – memory loss story mechanic on the scrapheap!

'Maggots, maggots, maggots, in, in, in!' We toured with them recently and they were great. Three months later and they’re simply brilliant. Step forward, MUNCIE GIRLS, to claim your award for biggest leap of progress from a pop-punk ensemble with a collective age that still couldn't qualify for a pension (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 20th March). Oi, LITTLE CROOKED SONS! Stop unashamedly pilfering from The Computers! They live in the same town as you, for fucksakes! Openers, Plymouth young guns, SHIP OF FOOLS, were blissfully unconcerned with how we might take their rough’n’ready teen punk-metal noise. I last saw STIFF LITTLE FINGERS in 1989 and they were a damp squib. Quite what happened since then to transform the band into a grizzly, fizzling powerhouse is anyone’s guess but Jake Burns has rediscovered his mojo and breathed new life into gems like 'Straw Dogs' and 'Tin Soldiers' (C103, Plymouth, 25th March). Another past-blast, London folk-punk proles, THE MEN THEY COULDN’T HANG, managed to make a fine fist of their arcane hits, especially ‘Ironmasters’, with Stefan Cush’s rabid leftist rants putting paid to any mellowing-with-age preconceptions. The second Armagedd’on Festival was a veritable hoot (various venues, Plymouth, 29-30th March). How could it not be with THE SOCIAL CLUB’s Weezer-meets-Hold-Steady cuteness, BRUNEL’s brusque post-hardcore tangents, DAMERELS’ voluminous garage crank, DREXL’s ferocious schizo-punk, SOFT SON’s Pavementesque scruff-pop, THE PJP BAND’s artful and epic indie wiles, WOAHNOWS’ hyperactive power-punk scramble, RUBY KID’s realist raps’n’rants and LUKE SCOTT DUMPER’s acoustic soprano croonfest? How, indeed. Searing country rock doesn't come better than Indiana troubadooby, AUSTIN LUCAS (Bristol Croft, 3rd April). The emotional weight of his songs was heart-wrenching but he was easily matched by his backing band, Tennessee quintet, GLOSSARY’s own set, which combined the timeless thrust of The Band with the prairie crunch of Lucero; Joey and Kelly Kneiser trading vocals that soothed like a warm balm. Bringing up the rear were ELLEN COX and her happygo-folksy acoustic wiles, and LOU HANMAN thrashing out her band, Caves' bittersweet punk-pop on a lonesome overdriven guitar. Wessex anarcho-intelligentsia, THE SUBHUMANS, have never been anything less than amazing (Maggie's, Plymouth, 5th April). No exception here. The only discernible difference is Dick Lucas' weathered phizog. Everything else – the passion, the power, the precision – are as vital as they were 30 years ago. Here’s to another three decades of self-belief. Before them, BUS STATION LOONIES sounded revitalised and full of saucy satire; while THE NEWSREADERS and THESE CREEPS tumbled through their collective rackets, TC coming out on top by penning more of their own tunes. Thatcher croaked (Ritz Hotel, London, 8th April). Rejoice, indeed. But, remember kidults, it’s not the demise of Thatch that we should celebrate but the eventual death of the demonic turbo-capitalism that she perpetuated. Until then the organic cider’s on ice. One-off showtime! So it went that RAD PITT – made up of folk who serve(d) their time in Crazy Arm, FTO and Bearfight – formed to play just once, and cheered up many a punkster punter thanks to their 15 minute party-hardcore jams and Mark Colwill's self-baiting banter (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 12th April). Three in one night? Easy. First up, Exeter's SOME SORT OF THREAT showcased some nifty new acoustic licks to embellish his kitchen sink confessions (Fortescue, Plymouth, 13th April); then over to the White Rabbit (main room) where 30-something punk-pops, THE ATARIS, were singing ditties about being troubled teenagers in love; which left erstwhile melodic punk trio, SOUTHPORT, to clean up after the emo-fest with their cockney banter and cock-eyed vignettes (entrance bar). Lovely jubbly. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
