You’ve gone from writing songs in your bedroom when you were 14 to supporting Reverend and the Makers on their current tour. How did you get into music? I started during school, but school was a bit shit and I didn’t really like it, although I had a really cool piano teacher who taught me some blues stuff. But piano wasn’t cool at secondary school, and guitar was, so I got an acoustic guitar and started playing that.
Talking of instruments, you play every instrument on your recorded songs, do you find it hard to take a back seat in a live gig and let someone else play all the parts?! Yeah, I’m picky about bass lines and stuff; I’m like, “You don’t play it like that!” But my guitarist is my mate Aidan and my drummer is my little brother. They can get annoyed at me, and I can call them a c**t, but with the other musicians I have to be more polite!
Do you still play the stuff you wrote when you were 14, or is it a bit cringy and dated now? It feels a bit dated to me because I’ve know it for years, but some of that stuff’s only just come out, which is great, but it would’ve been better two years ago. I still have to play the Melanie stuff (Mel’s Song) and that’s all good.
Do you prefer more poppy songs like Mel’s Song or the more experimental kind of things like He Only Goes Out On Tuesdays? I value them both as much as each other. But – how do I say this without sounding like a prick – it annoys me how pop songs, which I enjoy writing, are more accessible to the public. People try to push that as a description of what I do.
“Urgh, yeah but that’s Lily Allen! Did you see her on Jools Holland? She just had no balls!” So what does Mel think of the song? And particularly the lyrics (“I’ll wash my balls if you say that you’ll grab them…”!) I don’t know, she’s really hard to crack that Melanie! But she did have it as her MySpace profile song. So are you a bit more confident nowadays, more open to try out new things? Yeah, definitely. I still do some of the old crap, but I’ve started playing the mandolin, and the ukulele and things like that. Sometimes people don’t like that, but fuck ‘em!
So, the musical easy option you mean? Yeah totally. I performed ‘He Only Goes Out On Tuesdays’ for Radio Devon, and I thought it went really well, but they didn’t play it – just because of the subject matter. Mind you, Lily Allen manages to get away with a pretty rude subject in her song ‘Not Fair’… Urgh, yeah but that’s Lily Allen! Did you see her on Jools Holland? It was the best episode with all these bands doing, like, blues stuff and all these amazing musicians that were playing so soulfully and then Lily Allen gets up and she just had no balls! When someone takes up surfing when they’re just three years old, you’d expect them to be pretty darn good by the time they’re 24. Ben Skinner is pretty darn good. He grew up in Jersey with his parents and three sisters and was already an accomplished surfer when the family moved to Cornwall when he was 11. After getting frustrated with struggling in small conditions on his shortboard, he entered longboard comps and started winning pretty much everything going. Ben has been on the British team since he was just 13 years old, and to date has picked up a silver medal at the World Surfing Games (the Olympics of surfing), sixteen British titles, in 2007 he was the European Pro Longboard Champ, is a former English Champion, and is also currently the only Brit on the ASP World Longboard Tour (and is therefore one of the worlds top 32 longboarders who travel the globe competing in contests held from California to Japan), currently ranked in 17th place. He’s an all round waterman with a real passion for the ocean and for surfing. His surfboard company, Skindog, has been up and running for a year and a half now, and he has plans for the Skindog Surf School to open at Watergate Bay this summer. 247 caught up with him to talk Kernow, surf and… snooker! 16 |

What are you most proud of in your surfing career? This year, I’ve had one of the best runs ever, as far as consistency goes. I just qualified for the world longboard tour by winning an event in Spain. I was already qualified, but then they changed things, and you could only qualify by coming first or second in your region… So there was a lot of pressure, and I was really proud of myself for getting on the tour. My goal is to be world champ, and if you’re not on the tour then you can’t win. Also, surfing for Britasin and getting second in the world surfing games in California was a massive highlight… Winning the European Professional Longboard Tour in 2007 was an amazing moment for me. I had my girlfriend there and she was three months pregnant, and that was probably one of my proudest moments for sure.
Lawton. They’re all doing really well. It’s a pleasure to be able to help them, and I’m stoked to have them on board. What about Skindog’s eco stance? We definitely are one of the most eco friendly factories, we keep things very clean and produce as little waste as possible. But we also use bio foam and bio resin surfboards, working very closely with eco focused Cornish company Homeblown. What Homeblown do is really good, and again, it’s true Cornwall, and I love being part of it. They’re working to bring in truly eco friendly surfboards. I’m also getting a board model made in a system called Hydraflex, which is 100% recyclable. We definitely are aware of being eco friendly. Surfers Against Sewage has been a big part of my life too. I think it’s a massive part of our world – being able to go surfing and not be ill.
Who do you look up to in surfing? “247 Magazine has been around for nine years now… and it all began back in 2000, when everyone was worried
about the Millennium bug. Enterprising promoters were putting on the mother of all events to celebrate the millennium, with tickets prices in excess of £100 to match (for one night out clubbing!) and I was out partying and enjoying the good life – well, if I could find out what was going on that is. With an obvious drought of credible “what’s on” info, I thought I could do better than the lame efforts in circulation and thus, twenty4-seven (as it was know back then) was born. After roping in a freelance designer – Matt Sanwell, we both set out to create our own little cool music and lifestyle mag for the South West – full of stuff we were into like live music, street art, clubbing, surfing and ignoring the stuff we weren’t. Now, nine years on, Matt has returned to the freelance design world, the mag has changed owners, reshaped it’s name to 247 Magazine and spread it’s wings to cover more of the UK. I’ve learnt loads along the way, met and worked with some great people and uncovered some amazing talent. It’s hard to believe we have hit 100 issues, it’s still a labour of love, but we still love it, it’s a way of life – big up to everyone for their support so far, without you, we are nothing… Nigel Muntz, Co-founder

If you like clubnights where the music is bum wobblingly good, then it’s about time you headed to a Hong Kong Ping Pong fuelled dancefloor, sharpish. The HKPP guys have been bouncing around behind the decks for over a year now, and from their home in Falmouth are taking the HKPP sound to the masses this summer, with a new monthly residency at the Sandsifter in Godrevy, and nights at clubs all over Kernow (and beyond) popping up all over their schedule. HKPP consists of Jack Nash (aka Morphosis – won this year’s Littlesouth DJ Of The Year), Dave Raybould (aka Fat Harry/pie eating funk seeker) and James Evans (aka Spinforth, allegedly owns nearly every piece of golden age hip hop vinyl). Often joined by a live percussionist, the HKPP sound is funky-bouncy-booty-shaky. It’s about time we met them properly, don’t you think?! Dave Raybould chats to 247 Magazine…
Our aim is to always make the ladies dance. There’s no dress code other than we prefer people to be dressed. The typical HKPP dance move is the drunken hands in the air Viking! Do you ever have guest DJs? We love bringing guests down. We’ve had the legend that is Nick Thayer and fellow NSB’r DJ Chamber. We also like to put on bands when we can, we’ve put on Norwich hip hop monsters Def Tex and Backbeat Sound System (an amazing Cornish nine piece reggae/dub band!) Aldo Vanucci is booked in for July. We’re looking to get A-Skillz booked for September at the Sandsifter. J-Star or Nice Up! would be a real winner – we might be lucky enough to get them down over the summer.

I was travelling in Thailand when my taxi driver and new best friend insisted he take me to “nummmer one nightclub.” There was a bored looking lady standing on the central stage double bouncing ping pong balls into a half pint glass six feet away. She must have “fired” thirty ping pong balls and never missed the glass. I saw the same thing in Hong Kong a few years later so that’s where HKPP came from. How would you describe a typical HKPP night? We tend to pull out all the stops on our residencies, including booking a live percussionist. He is an animal! Hatton at Audio Source takes care of all our PA and lighting needs. The kind of music we play is hard to define as we play so many genres. Technically its funky breakbeat but we’ll play any music that we love, makes us smile, and suits the crowd.
on the Saturday. We’ll continue our Friday night residencies at Sandsifter and The Watermans and we’ve got gigs at IsoBar Is Dead (St Ives), The Old Grammar School (Truro) and Chy bar (Newquay). We’ll also be working on the next mixtape. These are proving to be really popular and can be downloaded for free via the HKPP Facebook group. The summer’s most serious business is working on our own tunes though. We’ve been having a lot of fun making bouncy bootlegs and tuba based re-edits as Chop Shop 45 (our production project) purely to play at HKPP nights but the response has inspired us to pull our fingers out and start producing our own music. DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH Very strange lot, THE MUTANT BEATNIKS. On their album, ‘Blazen’, the Bath/Cardiff ensemble indulge in all kinds of eerie electronica detritus but choose not to put any rhythmic pulse behind it; which lends the likes of ‘Rapture’ and ‘Miasma’ a purely cinematic and sinister experience. If you can listen to old B-movie soundtracks and Throbbing Gristle records without feeling like your soul’s being turned inside out, then these are the boys (I assume it’s the work of males due to the inherent detachment) for you. In an unnamed modern urban setting, the rats in the original poem become youths, in black hoodies, who are branded ‘ASBOs’, and clown governors rule the city. GONAMENA Sterts Theatre, Upton Cross, Nr Liskeard, Cornwall PL14 5AZ, 01579 362382, sterts.co.uk, £8.50/£7, £5 children Gonamena is the timeless story of a Cornish family and community living through an extreme time of irreversible change. Set in the stunning Gonamena Valley and the mining landscape of the Caradon Hill area, the story centres around a family as they face up to the challenge of rapid transformation during the mining boom and bust of the late 1800s. Written by renowned local writer, Simon Parker, the play is based on real events and evokes the emotional turmoil and extremes of opinion amongst the frontier-like existence of the many thousands of people that descended on the valley at the height of the copper ore mining period. A great showcase of local talent.

Brian captured the zeitgeist of the 1960s and turned poetry into something quirky, invigorating and slightly dangerous, with the aim of making it accessible for all. He’s also well known for his best selling children’s poems. He’s joined by Adam Horowitz with his satirical poems about celebrities and politicians, Bristol based Edson Burton and Lucy Lepchani.

One day, a mysterious figure moves into his ordinary surburban street. Wound Man is an unconventional superhero, who happens to have a vacancy for a teenage side-kick... The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley tells the story of two unlikely friends and the adventures they share. Each audience member is given a set of headphones through which he or she hears the voices of three live performers who are
narrating a fictional walk through a fictional city. Obscured behind a cinematic screen, the performers are alternately seen as shadows, silhouettes or in stark clarity, and they create a fully immersive sound environment to accompany their narration by producing homemade sound effects. Whisper places the performance in the head of each audience member and obscures the line between imagination, memory and reality.

The Age Of Stupid (12A)
Arts Centre, 01752 206114, plymouthartscentre.org Dir. Franny Armstrong, starring Peter Postlethwaite UK/2009/99 mins. This creative futurist documentary imagines a devastated world of 2055, wasted after years of human exploitation and neglect. Combining animated and dramatic elements with “historical” footage from 2007, The Age of Stupid stars Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist sifting through the remains of human civilization to create a digital broadcast for other future societies about why humanity failed to save itself from global warming. This is an impassioned but nuanced approach to climate change as we are confronted us with the already tangible effects of climate change and the brutal reality of where today’s inaction might lead.. Angels & Demons (TBC) 01803 847070, dartington.org Dir: Ron Howard, starring Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgård 2009/US/140 mins The team behind the global phenomenon The Da Vinci Code returns for this highly anticipated follow up. When Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon (Hanks) discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organisation’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. With beautiful Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra in tow we are taken on an actionpacked hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and eventually the most secretive vault on earth. Dir. Tom Hooper, starring Michael Sheen, Colm Meaney, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall. UK/2009/97 mins. Peter Morgan’s (Frost/Nixon) brilliant adaptation of David Pace’s novel tells the confrontational and darkly humourous story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44-day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football in the 1970’s, Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival, Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football. This was anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Clough, who had success building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor (Spall). A must watch for anyone who loves footy.

TERMINATOR SALVATION (TBC)
Dir: McG, starring Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Linda Hamilton. 2008/US/TBC Not content with reinventing the Batman franchise, Christian Bale takes on the Terminator mantle in this sequel. The film is set in the future where mankind is at war with a race of cybernetic killer machines and John Connor is leading the human resistance. Despite some much documented troubles on set the end product looks befitting of director James Cameron’s early efforts. Box office records could be terminated.

After returning to their home planet, the defeated robot Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons (bad guys), and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots (that’s the good guys) then find out that Megatron’s (the ultimate bad guy) dead body has been stolen from the US Military by the Decepticons and is brought back to life. Then the fun really begins, should be as spectacular as the original and then some.
Arts Centre, 01752 206 114, plymouthartscentre.org Dir. Joel Conroy Ireland/2008/80 mins This raw, heartfelt love-letter claims Ireland as the unlikely spiritual motherland of surfing. “Cold paradise” is what a visibly chilly Kelly Slater wryly calls it. In 2007, a colossal storm churned up the biggest swell ever to hit Ireland. The footage of the tiny figures riding these ferocious 50ft monster waves goes past awe-inspiring into something almost indefinable. Conroy’s documentary starts gripping hard when it reveals the remarkable life of the original soul-surfer, George Freeth.

When defunct punk bands from yesteryear make a comeback, it’s invariably to make a cynical cash-in. So it came as a relief that original Cali surf-punks, AGENT ORANGE, were firing on all cylinders (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 16 Apr). Led by original member, Mike Palm, the band’s blend of Dick Dale twang and Dead Kennedys thrash still retained the kind of edge that most resurrected punkers lose during the fallow years. But it was nothing compared to the vitality of New York’s BRIDGE AND TUNNEL: an incredible band who may holler and crunch like any four driven individuals but their Braid-like intensity, gender balance and infectiously unusual dynamics made for one of the best punk rock shows of the year (Cavern, Exeter, 19 Apr). Canada’s PROPAGANDHI are known for stitching their community activism onto their lapels, so it was disheartening to witness them spend the whole night cocooned in their dressing room (Concorde 2, Brighton, 20 Apr). Maybe they’re shy. Judgmental assumptions aside, the hardcore legends could do no wrong once they were kicking out the righteous jams, interjecting political soundbites where necessary and berating security for their heavy-handedness. Since Howards Alias hung up their boots, MATTHEW REYNOLDS has been busy penning lovely folk songs stuffed with emotional verisimilitude that wins converts by the gig-load (Skiving Scholar, Plymouth, 23 Apr). Unlike the glut of solo acoustic warblers out there, Matt can really sing. Not as in ‘this will do to satisfy Chuck Ragan fans’, but as in ‘why isn’t he doing double-headliner tours with Get Cape?’ Brilliant. A benefit show to raise funds for South Brent travellers’ anti-eviction campaign saw Holland’s POWER IS POISON proffer a grubby, rehashed version of a thousand anarcho-punk bands you’ve heard since 1982, while Bristol’s JESUS BRUISER were an exercise in impenetrable goodintentions (Phoenix, Plymouth, 27 Apr). Unfortunately, I missed the other bands due to trying to juggle three gigs in one night. Never a wise idea. These days, CHUMBAWAMBA’s much-berated, chart-bound tubthumping has been put aside in favour of pursuing their love of protest folk and celebrating the resilience of the working classes (Guildhall, Plymouth, 4 May). Moving ‘a cappella’ harmonies and accordion-accompanied strumalongs combined to reveal an anarchist heart that beats as regular as it ever did, Top Ten hits aside. A few minutes walk away and Ontario’s CREEPSHOW were kicking up a passable punk’n’roll storm although their Tiger Army-meetsHorrorpops shtick seemed a little pedestrian (White Rabbit, Plymouth). Shamefully, the unreconstructed man in me felt compelled to watch because frontwoman, Sarah Sin, is so goddamn sexy. My bad? I loved Jesse Michaels post-Op Ivy band, Common Rider, so I expected CLASSICS OF LOVE to have the same kind of sparkle (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 8 May). Alas, expectations were doused by workaday, unmemorable pop-punk vignettes that did little to justify Jesse’s standing in the modern punk frat. Similarly, Asian Man Records honcho, MIKE PARK, seemed to be going through the motions with a bunch of acoustic songs imbued with messages of unity and activism that, ironically, made me want to do less. Down on the south coast, the quaint harbour café known as Miss Peapods was gleefully ruining the ambience with some good punk rock noise (Penryn, 9 May). Lulling us into a false sense of decibel security, Exeter’s SOME SORT OF THREAT, aka Rory Matthews, humbly delivered his excellent little folk songs without fanfare or fakery. And any 15 year-old who refers to the cops as ‘scum’ without making it sound like macho posturing is a hero in my book. Local punks, DOWNTOWN RIOTS, had their guitars set way too low but their raging, fem-fronted melodic hardcore still shone through, with a clear nod to the likes of NoComply. I always mention BANGERS so I’m going to keep it short by leaving out the vowels… Thy wr mzng, nd th nw sng hd ll th mkngs f clssc. Exeter’s THE CUT UPS were awesome. Buzzing off the energy of new album, it felt like we were witnessing a veteran band in the throes of greatness, such was the quality of their anthemic tuneage and frontman, Jon Curtis’ warmlyreceived banter. Then Florida’s VIRGINS plugged in and, holy fuck, were they loud. Enough, even, to trouble my iron-gilded lug-holes. Good gruff, old-school punk songs, though, and that’s what matters. Rounding off the Barbican Jazz & Blues Festival in fine form (Plymouth, 10 May), ten-piece swing band, KINGSIZE 5, quickly set out their stall with a feisty, brassy strut lifted from the ‘30s to the ‘50s (accompanied by the local swing group turning on the Charleston charm). Whether their cute declaration that ‘all men are fucking leeches’ reached the lessdiscerning ears of the grannies in attendance is a moot point but no-one seemed to mind. See-ya bye.
