We Want Your Skull
My Heroes Killed Cowboys are politely asking for your skulls at their Halloween celebration at Isobar Is Dead in St Ives on 31 Oct from 10pm – 3.30am. Jac The Disco will be back in frightening form and are bringing stopmakingme down to Cornwall with them – one of the most in demand and highly respected DJs on the London club scene. Stopmakingme has two hobbies - cutting the sleeves off his t-shirts and smashing dancefloors alongside some of the biggest names on the planet. With residencies at Kill Em All and Adventures In The Beetroot Field, a home at Fabric and some very serious remix credentials this flame haired club prince is scarily good. Downstairs will be hosted by Porthleven’s highly original and slightly odd Residential Dance Home (who dress as old people and play some of the finest disco funk). Dress code is freaked out creatures of the night; there will be edible decor (including meringue ghosts), taxidermy and maybe a small controlled fire. Keep an eye on myheroeskilledcowboys.co.uk for more details.
Collecting vinyl is an obsession for thousands, with producers and DJs all over the world travelling thousands of miles to spend hours sifting though dusty basements in their pursuit of ‘the perfect beat’. The best place to find collectable vinyl at decent prices is at record fairs, and on 10 Oct the Westcountry Record Fair lands in Plymouth once again. Now in it’s third year the fairs have become a mecca for buyers and traders from all over the UK. The fair boasts the largest collection of rare vinyl and collectable CDs in the region. Organiser Matt Taylor explains, “Unlike eBay or other on line sources for collectable music, many people will be able to listen to and view the condition of items before they decide to buy.” Starting at 10am in Plymouth’s Lower Guild Hall (just off Royal Parade), entry is £1. Board Shorts
Taking place as part of Cornwall Film Festival, the UK’s only mini festival of film dedicated to surf filmmaking takes over the Stannary Bar at the Tremough campus of University College Falmouth next month. Filmmaker and festival manager, Christiaan Bailey, told us, “The primary aim of Board Shorts is to inspire and showcase an amazing array of perspectives on surfing and surf film making talent from across the globe, particularly to demonstrate that homegrown talent can hold it’s own against material from all over.” This year a selection of at least 10 short surf films will be shown, all under 10 minutes long, plus a longer feature taken from The Surf Screen’s vaults. Christiaan added, “Mr B from Plymouth will be screening some content and usually Mickey Smith submits a piece, however, we will also have some great films from unknown local filmmakers including James Aitkin, who lives in Falmouth.” Alongside the films, there will be music, slide shows from surf photographers, a prizegiving for film and a raffle (TBC). The event is always a high energy one, with a huge buzz around the films and the audience’s participation in the screenings. Christiaan explained, “If you have never been to a surf movie screening before, this is a great chance to experience the thrill. Hooting, hollering and general expressions of joy are the norm!” Board Shorts is on 7 November from 7pm (screenings start at 8pm) and is sponsored by Truro College, Relays, University College Falmouth, Finisterre, thesurfscreen.com and Leap Media. Cornwall Film Festival takes place the week after, from 13 – 15 November at the newly opened Phoenix Cinema in Falmouth. See cornwallfilmfestival.com for screenings and more info.

WITH THEIR FOURTH ALBUM ‘IGNORE THE IGNORANT’ JUST RELEASED, A NATIONAL TOUR AHEAD OF THEM AND AN ARMY OF LOYAL FANS, THE CRIBS JUST KEEP MOVING FORWARDS. THE BAND WERE ALREADY A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH, EVEN BEFORE LEGENDARY FORMER SMITHS GUITARIST, JOHNNY MARR JOINED THEM. CRIBS DRUMMER, ROSS JARMAN CHATS TO ARASH TORABI ABOUT THE RECENT ADVENTURES OF THE BAND THAT ALSO CONSISTS OF HIS BROTHERS RYAN (VOCALS/ GUITAR) AND GARY (VOCALS/BASS). You broke your wrist in the middle of recording the new album, and yet you carried on. Tell us about that. We’d been working hard for a week and we had a day off, so me and Ryan decided to skateboard. We went up this really steep hill, which looked like it would be fun on the way back. I’ve always been bad at skateboarding, probably because I’m so tall. Anyway, the board was going faster and faster, and I thought I’d better get off before I 12 |

have a bad accident. So I jumped off, fell and broke my wrist. I was told to rest for six weeks, but I ended up playing drums again after four days even though I was in a lot of pain. I took a lot of painkillers. I’ve got a weird lump on my wrist now. Your recent material is less lo-fi than your previous work. Was that a conscious decision? It was a natural progression really. The first album was very DIY, the second a lot less and the third album was quite pop. The new album is a lot more cinematic with a lot more depth, especially since having Johnny Marr as another guitarist. How did Johnny Marr end up joining The Cribs? Gary originally met him at (former Pavement frontman) Stephen Malkmus’ house in Portland, and Johnny told him how much he liked the band. After that, I met him at Glastonbury and we hung out for a bit and got on well. Then I saw him again at the Q Awards and asked him if he wanted to write a song with us. We originally booked a session for five days, expecting to just write one song. It was so productive that we wrote four, demo’d them and carried on writing
more for an album. Then Johnny joined us on the NME tour. So it all just fell into place Yeah, it wasn’t planned. He wanted to be in the band, and we wanted him to be in the band. We’d written all these songs with him, and it ended up being a full time thing. Were there any worries about Johnny’s iconic reputation casting a shadow over the band? Not really. It kinda swings both ways, because we’re an established band: our fans are very loyal and hardcore, and they don’t like any changes in the band. When there was a rumour going round that we were getting a new guitarist, at first they weren’t really into the idea, but when they found out it was Johnny Marr, it was like, fair enough! The fans enjoy the fact that he plays for us. Are you into The Smiths or any of Johnny’s former work? Oh yeah, we all listened to The Smiths when we were growing up. Did you all like the same bands when you were growing up and who would you cite as your influences?
We were into the same stuff, and it was good for me being the younger brother: the fact that I could go across the hallway and discover all this new music. We all got really into The Beatles – our mum had all the LPs. And we got into Ramones and The Sex Pistols as well, as teenagers.
How did you get signed to Dick Green’s Wichita label? We did a gig with Bright Eyes and Dick came to see us, wearing this really weird Hawaiian shirt. At the time Wichita was a very small label but we liked their ethics and their roster. We’d met with a few other labels, but had a lot in common with those guys. We’d go drinking with them and talk about music, so we ended up going with them.
Good to see the album is also out on vinyl. Vinyl’s definitely the best format – for the artwork as well. It’s something we think about a lot, when we’re doing the artwork.
Would you say The Cribs stand out against other bands? If so, in what way? Well yeah: we’ve been going for a while now and we’re on our fourth album. A lot of these so-called indie I’m a big fan of Dick Green’s old band bands just come and go. We’ve also played all the small venues and Biff Bang Pow! Yeah, not many people know about Biff worked our way up, building up an organic fanbase who obsess about Bang Pow! but Gary had heard of them the b-sides and every detail of the before we met him. band. Words: Sam Walker-Smart
Former frontman of hardcore outfit Million Dead, Frank Turner has reinvented himself as the purveyor of ‘campfire punk’; now delivering angry and candid acoustic numbers that speak volumes about modern life. While songs of love, loss and drunken nights may be the staple for any singer-songwriter worth their salt, Turner throws away the folk rulebook and paints a picture of a real 21st century boy with real 21st century woes. With debut ‘Sleep is for the Week’ and follow up ‘Love Ire & Song’ granting him a cult following, new release ‘Poetry of the Deed’ has reached the top 20 and granted U.S tours with former punk idols from his youth. Speaking exclusively from the great American highway with Sam WalkerSmart for 247 Magazine, Frank discusses the future, Bruce Springsteen, and the perils of trying to find a proper cup of tea abroad. You have just released your third album ‘Poetry Of The Deed’ last month; do you see the album as a big step forward or a natural progression from your first two? There’s more difference between this and Love Ire & Song than between the first two albums, certainly. I took my live band into the studio, worked with an outside producer (Alex Newport) and it was a more concentrated body of work than on previous efforts. Having said all of that, it wasn’t a massive left-hand turn or anything like that. It’s definitely down the same road as my previous solo records. I actually feel like it’s the third part of a trio in a way, and that next I might try something a little different, at least lyrically. You recently went on tour in the US with punk legends The Offspring. Any words of advice or pearls of wisdom for a band or solo artist about to go on a big American tour? Apart from the usual platitudes about packing enough clean clothing and the like, the main difference with American touring is the distance involved. Ten hour drives are not uncommon, and you have to play a show at the end of it. It’s survivable, but you have to get into the right mindset for a lot of driving. Beyond that, touring America is a joy, it’s such a great country and I love American people. What creature comforts do you miss the most while on tour? Given the amount that I tour and how long it’s been since I
wasn’t touring, I’m pretty used to this way of being. I guess I really miss cooking a meal for myself, eating out every single day gets a bit tedious (and expensive) after a while. But for the most part, I fucking love being on tour. Is their anything in your career you would like to go back and do again? Not really. I mean, there are things that haven’t turned out the way they were planned and so on, but on the whole things are going really well for me right now, and so I don’t think it’s worth thinking about trying to correct anything in the past. Focus on the future and all that. Are their any particular artists you would love to work or duet with? Many. I’m actually talking to Beardyman about making some kind of fucked up electro pop acoustic record at the moment, which I think would be a whole load of fun. Beyond that, it’d be amazing to work with Nick Cave, but I’d probably just shit myself… Any big plans for the near future other then gigging? Not really. I actually want to get back in the studio soon because I have a whole trenche of acoustic fingerpicked songs that I haven’t used yet for any album, and it seems like it’d be fun to make something along the lines of Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’. But I’m basically going to be on tour for a very long time. Which is fine with me. You have unfortunately been shipwrecked. What would your Desert Island Disc be? Very hard question to only pick the one! I might have to say ‘Born To Run’ by Springsteen. But that’ll change every minute or so, ha! A hard one now to finish. Coffee? Tea? Or neither? Being an Englishman I feel duty bound to say tea, but actually recently I’ve been drinking more coffee simply because it’s fucking impossible to get decent tea on the road outside the UK. So I have started settling for coffee. I have betrayed my culture, alas.
Frank Turner’s new album ‘Poetry of The Deed’ is out now on Xtra Mile Recordings/Epitaph Records. He plays the University of Plymouth on 24 Oct, The Lemon Grove in Exeter on 25 Oct, Bristol Anson Rooms on 26 Oct and Solus in Cardiff on 27 Oct. Words: Lauren Taverner Brown
Folk singer Joe Francis was raised on a musical mash up of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Abba in the rugged, beautiful setting of Cornwall. With haunting, mellow melodies, he tells tales of old Cornish myths, hope, true love, musical heroes, wistful sadness and fights. First learning to play the drums when he was ten, then learning bass and acoustic guitar a couple of years later, and now composing on a piano and playing the harmonica, he’s been gigging since he was 12 and has honed his musical skills in front of live audiences. Along with the three other members of his band The Ammunition, he’s recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London as well as performing all over the UK. As a child, Joe spent his time between the tiny village of St Agnes in Cornwall, and travelling across France, Spain and Portugal in a camper van. He still rambles about a lot, and most recently travelled alone to America with his acoustic guitar (a badass guitar named Sundance) for an epic road trip that resulted in him recording his latest solo album, The Sun Sessions, at Sun Studios in Memphis. We caught up with Joe during a recent solo tour of Ireland as he recovered from a show, a long drive, and a late night whiskey drinking session... Why did you decide to go to America? I wanted to travel, and a break from the band and the Cornish/London scene. I spend a lot of time in London, but it’s not the same. I wanted to be somewhere that I could play and get gigs for a bit of cash and get a reaction. Plus I like American culture and music. Were there any particularly memorable non-musical happenings on your trip? I was in New Jersey having just watched Counting Crows and was saying goodbye to the band when my taxi pulled up. I hopped in and within seconds was clutching the back of the drivers seat as he hurtled down the freeway at 100 mph. He got on the phone and was screaming at his sister who, it transpired, he had discovered having an affair with his wife. After about 15 minutes he slowed down and turned down an alleyway. He turned off all the lights and sat, totally silent, in the pitch dark. I tried the door handle but he’d locked the doors. I prepared myself for the worst, you know, fight or flight mode, but after a little while it became apparent that he wasn’t going to kill me and we ended up talking about Bruce Springsteen. He drove me back to the hostel and didn’t charge me anything for the ride. That’s pretty intense. But back to the music – how did you manage to get a slot at Sun Studios? It’s a long story involving thanksgiving, alcohol, the owner of Sun Studios, and the fact that I’m English, I put up a good fight and was in the right place at the right time. I only had six hours from midnight, and nothing at all was planned, it was totally last minute. Most of the songs I recorded were barely finished. I worked with the engineer James Lott, who’s been there since U2 did the ‘Rattle and Hum’ sessions with BB King. He had tons of stories about people he had recorded there, Ringo Starr, Tom Petty, Robert Plant, Johnny Cash…
What are the songs on Sun Sessions about? For the most part I’m telling stories of the things that happened to me or that I saw or heard or about how I felt along the journey. Saying that, the opening track on the album is proper Cornish folk song called ‘From the Beacon to the Brea’ which tells the story of the Giant Bolster (an old St. Agnes folk legend). Funny thing, to go 4000 miles around the world to look for inspiration only to end up writing a song about the village I live in back home in Cornwall. Who are your influences? The Police are a huge influence, they had a real “fuck you” attitude and they were good players. Sting’s songs from that era are among the best pop songs of all time. In the late 60s Paul McCartney was unstoppable, check out Abbey Road and The White Album. He was the best bass player/ songwriter/singer in the world, I don’t think anyone, even McCartney himself, has got anywhere near him since. Dylan is a huge influence too, as are other folk singers from the 60s, like Donavan. I have to be in the right mood to write, and I tend to tell stories about the things I’ve experienced, which is why I wanted to go to America. Tell us something we might not know about you… I box a little, believe it or not… and I read books like a devil.

Muse
The Resistance (Warner)
I shouldn’t think that, in decades to come, we’ll hold them in the same light that our ancestors held the Romantic composers of the 1800s but, by Christ, I defend Muse’s right to try. Via the twin towers of aural bombast and oral revolution, ‘The Resistance’ is the sound of War Of The Worlds disinterring the corpse of Freddie Mercury and feeding it to a wrathful Glitter Band. Thrilling and incredulous, Bellamy’s vision of transcending pop culture becomes ever less implausible. Backbone
Tinchy Stryder Catch 22 (Island/Universal)
Tinchy has been around for a few years on the grime scene, both as a solo artist and as part of Ruff Sqwad, but ‘Catch 22’ is his first album on a major label. It features hits like ‘Take Me Back’ (ft Taio Cruz) and latest single ‘Never Leave You’ with Amelle from Sugababes. He delivers a consistent package with Fraser T.Smith on the bulk of production duties (Craig David, Kano, N-Dubz). Stand out track has to be ‘Spotlight’, featuring Bristol’s very own Tanya Lacey on the chorus, a name to definitely look out for. Tinchy has a very promising future ahead of him; this is a decent album for someone so young. Lekan Latinwo
Jon Kennedy 14
(Organik Recordings) Apart from Phil Collins, most people would struggle to name a drummer that stands out from the rest of the band. This can’t be said for producer/DJ/sticker obsessive Jon Kennedy. Previous albums on both Tru Thoughts and Grand Central have set a high standard, and thankfully he’s smashed those and then some. Still sticking to the sound we know and love of well produced and crafted beats, he’s kept moving with the times without moving so far as to alienate his massive fan base. Highlights for me are ‘Demons’ and ‘Lovesick’ but there are plenty of top tunes to choose from. Aldo Vanucci

The Young Republic Ballestesque
(End of the Road)
This Tennessee six-piece’s second album is the musical equivalent of sailing on a turbulent sea, or watching an action-packed drama with a plot that constantly twists and turns. Complex song structures are tightly delivered, subtly hinting at the band’s many influences: classical, folk, country and rock and roll – but they never stay in the same place too long to make obvious reference points. This album is a masterpiece and a potential classic, though it may not grab you on the first listen. But it’s well worth returning to it repeatedly. Arash Torabi
Drawings
Seven Deadly Sins (Self-release)
Matthew Reynolds, dear chap, will you ever be content in your muso endeavours? Hopefully not, if it means more of this genre-leaping majesty. Wrapped in a conceptual conceit, the debut mini-album from new trio, Drawings, is a reminder of how superior – and underrated – Reynolds is as a creator of emotionally full-tobursting pockets of alt. melodrama; the kind of intensely dynamic and troubled rock’n’roll that heals broken hearts. Bless. Backbone

Dubstep seems to be the only thing left in dance music that really caters to creativity and experimentation. On this mix there’s dancehall reggae, techno, spoken word and some laidback styles. The DJs know when to chill and when to bang it, and the transition from one to another is smooth and almost unnoticeable. The heaviest tune for me is Jahdan Blakkamoore’s Long Road, co-remixed by Matt Shadetek. More please. Arash Torabi
Break
Return To The Temple E.P (Shogun Audio) Here we have four absolute gems! First up is the lead track ‘Winter Sun’ and those of you expecting a ‘Break’ trademark can think again, this has nothing but warm vibes from start to finish making it the perfect track as the cold months close in. ‘Now It’s Going’ is a slice of tear-out D’n’B ready to destroy the dancefloor! Break re-visits his 2007 smasher ‘Let It Happen’ with some VIP business, turning one classic into another. Last but not least we are left with ‘After Shower’, hitting you with something a little bit different to get your skank-on! A must have for all D’n’B lovers. IN:SIGHT/Ollie Evans
Pama International Outernational
(Rockers Revolt)
Another stunning album by the British reggae warriors who know the importance of soul. Coming like a Stax-meets-Trojan blend, Outernational is well produced, bass heavy and melodic. Sure, the presence of The Specials is strong, with Horace Panter King Tubby & Clancy on bass, Lynval Golding on guitar (and Eccles All Stars vocals on one song) and co-production Sound System from John Collins (producer of the classic International Dub LP Ghost Town). But the soulful voice of lead singer Finny, together with Sean (Pressure Sounds) Flowerdew’s (keyboards) songwriting lead Rare-as-fuck dub set produced by Clancy the way. My personal favourites: Equality & Eccles, played by The Dynamites and King Stitt and mixed by King Tubby. This album is Justice for All and Question the Answer. a real treasure, and so obscure that the only Arash Torabi copy of it in existence was found earlier this year. Opening the album is the organ-led Baroness ‘Dub Star’, which sets the scene for an Blue Record upbeat and mainly instrumental reggae set, (Relapse) with a hint of vocal here and there. ‘Kingston Dub Town’ is next, a smooth rework of the original. All the tracks were originally mixed I didn’t think it would be possible for Baroness to surpass ‘Red Album’ but, by as an album by Tubby and, it’s now been fuck, they have. Not by steering through remastered. A real corker. Arash Torabi uncharted waters but by pushing their accumulative sound to all extremes, in all DJ Rupture & directions, resulting in an astonishing opus Matt Shadetek that allows for all of their ‘70s/prog/folk/ Solar Life Raft punk/rock/sludge idiosyncrasies to thrive (The Agriculture Records) on a tidal wave of Southern metal that hairy Well-balanced dubstep DJ mix by Brooklyn Sabbath and pimply Muse fans alike will probably swoon over. Album of the year? duo who prove yet again just how many different styles you can pack into this genre. With tubular bells on. Backbone
DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH They don’t do demos, JULIAN GASKELL & HIS RAGGED TROUSERED PHILANTHROPISTS. They do fully realised works of prole art that eschews the idea of clambering up the music industry ladder only to land on a snake and end up in a heap of disappointment. True to form, ‘Here The Brute Harpies Make Their Nests’ finds Gaskell and Co stepping up a gear and self-releasing an album that oozes confidence, irreverence, independence and brilliance; cementing their reputation as Tom Waits and Gogol Bordello’s defiantly Cornish bastard offspring. Taking us into a tumbledown world of squeezeboxes, fiddles, percussive waywardness and intellectual drinking, these 14 songs will make you swell with underclass pride even if you’re a bourgeois bum, with a lyric booklet that is worth the admission fee alone. Magnificent. raggedtrouseredphilanthropists.co.uk
ROCK SHOW DEMO OF THE MONTH DEPTHS, a five piece melodic metal outfit from Exeter, have only been together for just under a year but have already shared the stage with some impressive acts on the national scene. Describing their live shows as crushing and entertaining, Illusions In Nightmare certainly reflects that, with pounding drumming and shredding that brings the melody of the tune out in harmony with each other. Next year looks set to be the year Depths take their sound to a higher level. myspace.com/depthsuk
Young soul upstart, STEPH NEWTON, may look like the girl next door but that never stopped Joss Stone turning into a loved (and subsequently loathed) international diva. Impressively, the 21 year-old Cornish songstress wrote, produced and played everything on her debut EP ‘Everything You Need’ – a clutch of songs that adequately showcase her woozybluesy soul croon, riven with pop sensibilities and a penchant for earthly longing. Opener, ‘Outta My Depth’, hints at the R&B glitz of Destiny’s Child while, elsewhere, she’s clearly paying homage to her heroes, Beverly Knight and Alicia Keys. When a little more of her own personality shines through, we could be looking at another South West, soul sister sensation. myspace.com/ stephnewtonmusic
Plymouth indie-rockers, POPPY RAID, can barely be accused of pushing the envelope but they have a unique vocalist (Poppy?) who winches the band’s workaday Britrock strums up to something slightly more glammy, if curiously off-kilter. It’s as if she’s caught in the crossfire between the Nico nihilism of Velvet Underground and the disposable coo of Transvision Vamp, which could be the best or worst place to find oneself, depending on your pop bias. Unfortunately, the stilted and dated guitar stylings win the day by dragging the likes of ‘Pull The Plug’ back to earth with a jolt, and without a decent chorus. ‘100 Miles An Hour’ shows more spunky promise, although still sounds like it was written in 1994. myspace.com/poppyraid

This exhibition marks a shift from Gladwell’s earlier focus upon urban environments and engages instead in a performative, personal exploration of the boundaries and possibilities of a human relationship to the Australian hinterland. Influenced by his experiences in Australia’s landscape of the outback, and Mad Max movies, the work is a suite of videos accompanied by sound, photographic and sculptural works.

Injecting a healthy dose of contemporary styles fused with breathtaking hip hop moves. In the confines of a psychiatric hospital, breakdance becomes a way of expressing freedom and rebelling against the iron rule of Nurse Ratched – who happens to be a ballet fan… Insane in the Brain features a pulsating soundtrack with cuts from Missy Elliot, Dizzee Rascal, Gotan Project, David Holmes and Cypress Hill. Inventive set design and choreography are mixed with film and multimedia sequences to produce a fast-paced show that is funny, moving and packed with high-octane dance. The company was formed in late 1997 by a group of Sweden’s leading street dancers who formed a collective in order to explore different techniques of breaking, locking, popping, boogaloo and new school. Not afraid to use any style to create fresh and exciting work, Bounce also utilises lindy hop and tap, as these genres have influenced many generations of street dancers.

Lucy Orta, Plymouth Arts Centre (with Plymouth College of Art), 38 Looe Street, 01752 206114, plymouthartscentre.org 10am -8.30pm Plymouth Arts Centre and Plymouth College of Art are collaborating on an exhibition and series of events with the international artist Lucy Orta - Professor of Art Fashion and the Environment at London College of Fashion. Focusing on the elements of craft and design, the gallery spaces will be dedicated to experiencing this seminal artist’s work, which examines the social bonds within communities and the relationships between individuals and their environments. Orta’s work draws inspiration from a variety of disciplines including fashion, architecture, design philosophy, social activism and traditional art practice. Early works in the exhibition include Refuge Wear and Body Architecture featuring portable architecture; tents that become overcoats; backpacks that transform into sleeping bags; and prototype structures – light and autonomous for emergency situations. Orta’s work is often a critical response to some of the most sensitive areas of society.

Dir: Claire Denis, starring Alex Descas, Mati Diop, Nicole Dogué, Grégoire Colin France/Germany/2008/100 mins Claire Denis’ wide-ranging career, from Chocolat to Beau Travail, brings this latest marvellous evocation of the warmth and trust of friend and family bonds set in suburban Paris. Widower Lionel (Descas) and daughter Josephine (Diop) live supportive, routine lives which are set to change the prospect of Josephine leaving home to find her own independence. Relationships between father, daughter and their extended family of neighbours are examined through dialogue, gesture and intimate camera work. Antichrist(18)
5 – 7 Oct: , The Poly, Falmouth,
01326 212 300 , thepoly.org Dir: Lars Von Trier, starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. 2009/Denmark/ 100 mins Dividing the critics, Von Trier’s brutal and uncompromising latest feature is not for the faint hearted. After the loss of their child, a grieving couple retreat to their cabin ‘Eden’ in the woods hoping to overcome their loss and repair their broken hearts and marriage. However, when Dafoe’s character, a relentless and overbearing therapist, suggests that she should relinquish her medication and have the courage to stay in the situation that frightens her, he seriously underestimates the power of their grief. Then things get nasty, and what follows is sure to horrify, shock and disgust some audience members, but thrill and excite others with equal measure. Away We Go (15)

Dir: Sam Mendes, starring John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph and Maggie Gyllenhaal 2009/US/96 mins Directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road), this funny, frank and heartfelt film follows the journey of an expectant couple, as they travel the U.S. in search of the perfect place to put down roots and raise their family. Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski play the slightly shambolic couple Verona and Burt. Along the way, they have misadventures and find fresh connections with an assortment of relatives and old friends who just might help them discover a place called home for the first time. This is the perfect film for thirtysomething adolescents who enjoy a delicate, dark-witted indie comedy.

Oliver Parker, starring Ben Barnes, Colin Firth, Ben Chaplin and Caroline Goodall 2009/UK/112 mins When naïve young Dorian Gray (Barnes) arrives in Victorian London he is swept into a social whirlwind by the charismatic Lord Henry Wooton (Firth) who introduces him to the hedonistic pleasures of the city. Henry’s friend, society artist Basil Hallward (Chaplin) paints a portrait of Dorian to capture the full power of his youthful beauty and when it is unveiled Dorian makes a flippant pledge; that he would give anything to stay as he is in the picture – even his soul. This eagerly awaited latest adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel does not disappoint, with a stellar British cast and fine acting from Barnes in particular as the young man losing himself in hedonistic pleasures of the time. This cleverly constructed psycho-thriller finds four mathematicians trapped in the eponymous room with riddles and equations to solve before the walls, powered by hydraulic jacks, literally close in on them. The result is a uniquely sinister whodunit of nerve-wracking logic, with stylish photography, razor-sharp editing and a detailed soundtrack wringing out every ounce of tension. Think The Cube meets π, its utterly unlike anything else on the circuit, a unique cinema experience.

Frozen River (15)
22 Oct: Savoy Cinema,
Penzance, 01736 363330, merlincinema.co.uk. Dir: Courtney Hunt, starring Melissa Leo, Misty Upham, Michael O’Keefe. 2008/USA/97 mins A husband abandons his car at a Mohawk bingo parlour and disappears, leaving his wife penniless but determined to do anything possible to keep her family on the rails. She joins forces with Lila, a Mohawk single mother, together they use the abandoned car as an opportunity to make the money they need to unite their respective families. Thrown together by circumstance, the two women make hazardous car trips across the ice of a frozen river to smuggle Chinese and Pakistani immigrants across the border into the US. While this is the stuff of action thrillers, first-time writer/ director Hunt’s naturalistic style keeps it grounded in the struggle for economic survival and has received critical acclaim in festivals around the world.

Three years after being forced to resign, the former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to outfox the breezy British showman and rehabilitate himself in the hearts and minds of the American people. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish girl who runs a movie theatre in Paris which becomes key to their ambitious plan to kill Hitler himself. Dir: Wes Anderson, starring George Clooney, Bill Murray and Meryl Streep. 2009/US/TBC On a farm lives a Badger, a Rabbit, a Weasel, their families and Mr. Fox. To make ends meet, every night, Mr. Fox steals a meal from one of the three crooked farmers-Boggis, a chicken farmer, Bunce, who has a little bit of everything but only eats duck liver, and Bean, who farms turkeys and apples and subsists solely on apple cider. After one to many chickens go missing, the greedy farmers band together to end Mr. Fox. Those who read the Roahl Dahl novel will be pleasantly surprised with Wes Anderson’s take on the kids tale and his trade-mark quirky humour.

23 – 29 Oct: Plymouth
Arts Centre, 01752 206 114, plymouthartscentre.org. Dir. John Woo starring Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengui and Chang Chen 2008/ China/148 mins Red Cliff is an epic based on true events during the end of the Han Dynasty in ancient China. It is the story of numerous battles of intellects and forces, on land and water, which eventually culminated in the most famous battle in Chinese history, where two thousand ships were burned and the course of China’s history was changed forever. The film reunites the legendary director John Woo (in his return to China after a long and successful Hollywood career) and Tony Leung (Lust, Caution and In The Mood For Love) for their first film together in twenty years. A visual feast.

Columbus is a big coward, but when you’re afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-toting, zombie-slaying bad ass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. Apart from the heavyweight sponsorship – Newquay was like a Relentless outpost – Boardmasters was a runaway sunshine success (Watergate Bay, 7-8 August). Amidst scenes of alfresco mischief, local boys, SUITENOIR, kicked things off on the Rock (no product placement here, baby) stage on Friday, a slick modern affair and a band destined for modest greatness; while over on the Main stage, acoustic slide guitar maestro, ROB SAWYER, was capturing the essence of antipodean blues. Squat-punks-gone-major, THE KING BLUES, made sure to denounce the RAF recruitment stall as cannon fodder whilst dishing out platefuls of politicised, acoustic soul-food; followed by the inimitable ROOTS MANUVA, decked out in a fetching off-white track suit, and armed with the day’s only collection of authentic hip-pop hits. Back at Rock stage, Preston bruisers, FAILSAFE, ploughed their potent melodic hardcore furrow with typically effortless precision; epically-proportioned Scotrock trio, THE XCERTS, proved why they’re making waves across the venues of the country; while Brighton’s BRAKES, led by everyman genius, Eamon Hamilton, were the unsung heroes of the day – their unassuming Weezeresque hoedown putting big toothy grins on many sizzled and sozzled faces.

Day two, and with the sun a gloriously permanent fixture, Cambridge posthardcore gunners, THE TUPOLEV GHOST, were a perfect hangover cure of intense, pummelling rhythms and intelligent interplay; TURBOWOLF were a revelation, all hyped up garage thrust, synth squeals and comedy moustaches; and Exeter’s THE COMPUTERS threw themselves into their performance with singer, Alex Kershaw, lugging his guitar and microphone into the crowd for a spot of fan love. Which left punk’n’roll converts, THE GHOST OF A THOUSAND, to bring things to a fitting climax, piledriving through riffs at a devilish rate, with circle pits spinning speedily around vocalist, Tom Lacey, as he howled and strutted in the eye of the storm. Not so hot was Totnes troubadour, COSMO JARVIS, and his faintly smug, spoken-word acousto-rock ditties; while HEXES’ gritty, neo-punk thud seemed a touch noncommittal. Before you ask, I missed CYPRESS HILL. On purpose. I was under the impression that the only people who listen to the stoner-rap chumps are pubescent kids and 40-something narcoholics on a nostalgia trip.

Philly hardcore newbies, KINGDOM, fronted by straight-edge vegan, Davin – a woman who rejects irony in favour of telling it like it is – were interesting if derivative (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 13 August). Before them, Cali crooner, CHRIS MURRAY, treated us to some sweet acoustic ska and rock steady tunes, making for the sharpest of contrasts and a celebration of aural diversity. Anarchists may make the best lovers but not always the best songwriters. Which is why THE WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY are such a gamely proposition (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 14 August). Their third visit to Plymouth found the six-piece in keen form, balancing cult cabaret against infectious punk groove with the silky Jack Terricloth holding court, glass of claret in hand, like a ringleader at Circus Noir. Openers, Plymouth trio, THE ROOFTOP GAMBLER, made good with their understated loungecore: part Karate, part Nick Cave, part Gram Parsons and wholly excellent. With Howards Alias put to bed, Matthew Reynolds has returned with a new sound and a renewed hope under the moniker DRAWINGS (Hamptons, Southampton, 15 August). It’s quite a leap and a welcome one: with Reynolds indulging in his love of climactic build-ups and heart-wrenching confessions interjected with momentous riffs that revealed a hint of the past but with a knowing twist.

Aah, Beautiful Days (Escot Park, Honiton, 21-23 August). How we love your indie ethos. Due to a limited word-count I’ll keep it pithy. SONIC BOOM SIX opened the festival in fine genre-mashing style; THE POGUES were on top form, MacGowan managing to hit the right notes and remember the words, just like the old, glory days; and THE SUBHUMANS were epiphanic. Are they ever not? Dick Lucas was particularly fired up. Is he ever not? SETH LAKEMAN proffered tales of West Country folklore; IMELDA MAY‘s Dublin-tinged rockabilly coo got us dancing in ways that The Levellers never could; and Derry’s CARA DILLON was too perfect to be true. Stunning voice. Stunning face. Marry me. BABAR LUCK pulled funny faces and talked of unity in ways that most punk bands can only dream of; THE IMAGINED VILLAGE melded Irish folk and bhangra to amazing effect; THE DUB PISTOLS took us back to the Brit-hop heyday; FRANK TURNER‘s all-embracing post-punk acoustics elicited teary eyes aplenty; and Ozabilly trio, THE LIVING END, boasted the be st guitar solos of the weekend. A remarkably sprightly GONG took the festival to new heights of hippy hogwash with witchy howls of “I am your animal”. THE MARTIN HARLEY BAND supplied the slide blues majesty; DIRTY SCAVENGER the strained street-poetry; PRONGHORN the Ukrainian hoedown interface; JAY TERRESTRIAL & CHEZNEY the anarcho-folk, anti-cop stomp; and LAMB‘s sombre trip-hop lent a smidgen of gothic cool to an otherwise technicoloured bohemian jamboree. Brilliant weekend. And barely a drop of rain. How do you like them apples?

STUDENT NEWS TEAM Tom Vennard Deputy President deputypresident@upsu.com Kassie Bath UPSU Partner Colleges Co-ordinator kassie.bath@su.plymouth.ac.uk
HELLO!
Shiona Biggin
Hi, I’m Tom, Deputy President of the University of Plymouth Students’ Union (UPSU). I hope you’ve all had a great summer and like me spent some time abroad in the sunshine, but if you didn’t don’t worry, here at UPSU the sun is always shining! Sorry to be so cheesy, but I just want to highlight the fact that we have so much to offer you lovely people. ☺ Well, it’s time to get ready for a great year ahead. I will be visiting all of you in our partner colleges, from Penzance to Weymouth and all the way up to Bristol, so look out for me! My role as Deputy President means that I represent all University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) Students. All 10,500 of you! So, what can I do for you? Well, I am here to represent you, your views and opinions, what you think about your course and anything else to do with your education. If you would like to start your own sport club or society I can help you, if you would like to arrange a day out doing some volunteering work I can also help. If you would like to get in touch with me, you can contact me on deputypresident@upsu.com and I will be able to give you support or even come visit you to talk about your idea, or anything else UPC related. Here at UPSU, we have student parliament and meet once a month, although most of you are not based in Plymouth, you can still be involved. We would love to see you attend our meetings and we can always help towards your travel costs! My main aim over the next year is to get you more involved with UPSU, through support from myself and our team at UPSU. There are loads of good reasons to get involved and I will be bringing the best of UPSU to partner colleges throughout the year. Please check out our website upsu.com for more information and look out for your UPC Mini Guides which contain important information on the services we provide. There’s also a welcome site to help you settle in at www.help-cetl.ac.uk/upc. Don’t forget, if you haven’t already got your NUS card you can buy online through our website.

Somerset Students Party On
Everyone loves the SU bar. With cheap drinks and great music, your Union is the best place to relax (or get the party started) after a hard day studying. However, Somerset College doesn’t have room for an SU bar, and the lack of facilities prompted students to take matters into their own hands. UPSU Rep and HE President of the Students Union, Tanya Carter, has been working hard to give Somerset College students what they want, and has established links with Mambo, a bar in Taunton town centre. Students can now get exclusive discounts at Mambo with a special Mambo VIP card. In addition to the deals at Mambo, Pitcher and Piano, The Perfect 5th and Shout will all be offering exclusive deals for Somerset College students with a valid NUS Extra card. For more information at the deals and the Mambo VIP card contact Tanya on hepresident@somerset.ac.uk or join the ‘Plymouth University Students at Somerset College Facebook Group.

Schools Out and Surfs Up
The Animal Academy at Tolcarne beach in Newquay hosts one of the country’s largest surf competitions from 24 – 25 Oct, organised by UPC students from the Surf Academy at Treviglas Community College. The event will see students put event management skills into practice as over 150 schoolkids from 14 schools across Cornwall take to the waves in a bid to become Cornish Schools Surf Champs.
BUCS Surf Champs
BUCS Surf Championships descend on Newquay from 15 – 18 Oct for a massive surf, art and music event. This is Europe’s biggest student surf event, with around 400 students of all surfing abilities taking to the waters of famous Fistral Beach. Last year, Amy Brock-Morgan from University of Plymouth and Josh Leatherbarrow from Falmouth University College won the individual Championships, with Falmouth University College taking home a team Championship trophy. As well as the surfing contest, which is judged by the British Surfing Association, there will also be live music including a headline performance from Radio 1XTRA’s Mistajam at Fistral Blu on the Friday night. With a full schedule of social events and entertainment to fill the evenings, including a screening of the new Rip Curl film and an exhibition of surf inspired art curated by students from University College Falmouth, the event looks set to be a great success. In addition to this, special surf competition accommodation deals (from £39) have been sorted with local campsite Trevelgue to create the exclusive Surfers Village, so that everyone visiting Newquay for the competition can stay in the same place – basically what will be party central! Competitors can also enjoy free physio from City College Plymouth FdSc Sports Therapy students (who are been sponsored by UPC and RELAYS – see page 55). Even if you don’t surf, go along for the ride – there will be surf lessons available at Fistral beach. bucssurfchamps.co.uk

DO YOU NEED SUPPORT?
In today’s politically correct world, it’s OK to be disabled. There are many different kinds of support available for those who need it. But did you realise that disability support can also apply to those who don’t consider themselves disabled? Julie Osborn manages Disability and Mental Health Support Services at the City of Bristol College (CoBC). She used HELP CETL funding to do a teaching fellowship through the University of Plymouth and did some research with “disabled” HE learners. Her aim was to identify the barriers to learning that disabilities caused, and consider how they could be overcome. Not only did she find that disabled students experienced many challenges when trying to access and gain support, but she also told us that one of the main things she discovered was that “disabled” isn’t a term many of the students she works with would use to describe themselves. Many students who could have accessed support services did not contact the service as they did not think that they were eligible. As well as students with physical disabilities, she works with students who need support in a vast range of other ways, from those with dyslexia to those who need emotional support. Even students with repetitive strain injuries and bad backs can contact their disability advisor as there are all kinds of support available for every student. Support can be given in complete confidentiality too. We caught up with Julie to discuss just what Disability Support means. our service would not describe themselves as How does the Disability Support team work at disabled but recognise that they have support City of Bristol College? needs. Whilst you’re studying, you’ll see that there are loads of different opportunities for you to get involved in volunteering. Not only is volunteering super good karma (if you’ve ever seen My Name Is Earl then you’ll already be a firm believer), but it also shows that you’re willing and able to get stuck in and help others (which is invaluable on your CV and is something that is looked kindly upon by prospective employers). So this might sound cheesy, but use your time whilst studying wisely, and stock up on feel good points at the same time as helping to make a difference. There are lots of ways you can help by volunteering. RELAYS (short for Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport) is an ambitious and innovative programme designed to inspire young people and their communities to participate in, create and promote cultural and sporting activities in South West England. Its aim is to create a positive and lasting legacy beyond the 2012 Olympics. With a focus on three main themes – sport and wellbeing; arts and culture; and knowledge and learning, RELAYS will run and support a variety of exciting festivals, events and activities throughout the region. Student volunteers have an active role in planning, co-ordinating and running various RELAYS events around the region. This summer, RELAYS volunteers helped run Devon Games to Inspire (GTI) 2009, a sporting and cultural event that built on the success of the Devon Youth Games, which has run with great success across the county for the last ten years. With everything from street sports and dance workshops to tag rugby and netball, 1453 participants between the ages of eight and eighteen took part. Student volunteers from University of Plymouth, University College Plymouth St Mark & St John, University College Falmouth and North Devon College were recruited along with volunteers from local sports clubs to assist with the running of the event. A total of 122 volunteers were involved, and around 4000 people were estimated to have attended the games. Volunteers at the event were organised by Jo Reed
(RELAYS School Events Co-ordinator), who is based in the volunteering department in the students union at the University of Plymouth. If you are interested in being involved with any future RELAYS projects please contact Jo Reed by emailing joanna.reed@su.plymouth.ac.uk or calling 01752 588389
RELAYS PROJECT UNCOVERS NEW MUSICAL TALENT Throughout the summer, RELAYS volunteers and Truro College students, Bex Gallagher and Rose Goodship, along with recent graduate Aaron Connelly-Bayliss joined Alex Parlby from the Livewire Music Project and Luke Stevenson from Newquay Tretherras School to work alongside music industry professionals including Nick Webb of Bare Feet Promotions, Louise Martin from St Austell Bay radio, Ryan Jones of The Hitchcock Rules and Steve Yelland, of SPSAudio and University College Falmouth students to create an exciting event encompassing music, art and film to take place at Newquay’s Fistral Blu Bar Bistro, during the BUCS Surfing Championships which take place in Newquay from 15 – 18 Oct (see news). Students searched for a new/unsigned band, who will play at the event on 17 Oct. Make sure you get down to Newquay to check out the talent they’ve discovered! magazine | 55

This year is a special year at the Students’ Union. In Plymouth, Course Reps are soaring up into the stratosphere in a glorious rise to glory. What do you want to change? Your course? Your faculty? Your university? Are you determined? Compassionate? Committed? Then you might be the perfect candidate to be a representative for the other students on your course. A course rep has a vitally important role, ensuring that students are being treated fairly, and are getting the very best education that they’re entitled to. At the start of each academic year it is expected that all programmes elect a course rep… and all students are encouraged to think about standing for the job. Ed Marshall explains more about what course reps can do for you… Glory and representation; but what does this mean to partner college students? It means overall we are moving towards a stronger representation system – and you can benefit from the larger voice we gain. Organising course rep networks is something partner colleges are particularly efficient in doing – the small scale of courses and more informal relationships with staff allow for easier communication. So what can UPSU offer you when you have a problem wider than your course? Well, I’ll tell you – a voice through multiple channels. You can talk to, me (vpedandwelfare@upsu.com), the Deputy
President Tom (deputypresident@upsu.com) , or the UPSU College Reps about how we can lobby the University on your behalf. I want to work with all the partner colleges Plymouth has to make sure every student is heard. Uniting with other Course Reps will prove vital to be a cohesive voice as our system of representation improves. There is a Course Rep networking forum, to allow you to network and share problems and solutions, http://intranet.plymouth.ac.uk/coursereps. We are always looking to improve and enlist students’ support – as always send me an e-mail to get involved. This year will bring change (as much as saying that goes against my instinct against slogans and political sound bites). The chosen pilots of representation will inexorably climb into the record books as the most engaging yet. In the words of Obama – “change is coming” – get involved. coursereps@upsu.com Words: Ed Marshall
