Grandmaster Flash tickets

The legendary hip hop DJ, and one of the earliest DJ’s Grandmaster Flash is heading to Newton Abbot on Friday 9th September for an exclusive gig at the all new Yellow Room – Hannahs at Seale Hayne, ahead of his Bestival show on the Isle of Wight the following day. If you know Hip Hop then you know what a big deal this is. He is the original deal, the first to use decks as a musical instrument. And along the way become the inventor of a new

musical genre. There are not many musicians who have that claim to fame. Grandmaster Flash last played at the Dance Academy, Plymouth back in the late nineties/early noughties – we can’t remember the exact date as it was so long ago! He is amazing to watch, we have never seen a DJ play so many tunes in such a short space of time, and he totally commands the crowd – we strongly urge you to check this guy out – a true master of the decks. Tickets are £17, doors openat 7pm, Grandmaster Flash on stage at 9.30pm, only 700 tickets available, and it’s an over 14’s show too. See www.grandmasterflash.com

Tickets to Watchet Live 2011

Watchet Live Festival 2011, which takes place on August Bank Holiday weekend, has just secured X-Factor winner Leon Jackson as its headliner and we’ve teamed up with them to give away a family ticket. Working with producers and song-writers on the LA music scene whilst incorporating a Scottish folk twist, a nod to his roots, has really opened Leon’s eyes to the potential sound he can now craft. Watchet Live 2011 features its biggest-ever line up, largest ever site and a host of new activities and events. 3 internationally renowned acts have been announced as headliners; legendary festival veterans Dreadzone; Britpop heroes Dodgy, and infamous Somerset cider drinkers The Wurzels (who make a triumphant return to Watchet after their rip-roaring performance in 2009.) Bicycle races are coming your way This month, London-based indie folksters Bombay Bicycle Club will be hitting our South-Westerly shores (literally) with a performance at Newquay’s Relentless Boardmasters festival, bringing their new album ‘A Different Kind of Fix’ along with them. 247’s Rob Sleigh recently caught up with the band’s drummer; Suren de Saram… Most bands don’t like to rush things when it’s time to start thinking about making their next album, preferring instead to take a short rest period before getting on with the difficult task ahead. However, it’s probably fair to say that, during Bombay Bicycle Club’s rather short history, they’ve chosen to do things quite differently. Following the release of the band’s 2009 debut ‘I Had the Blues but I Shook Them Loose’, all four members were practically champing at the bit to get going with its successor. Twelve months later, their second album ‘Flaws’ entered the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart within a week of its release. “We never expected it to do as well as it did,” says Suren. “We had only planned for it to be a sort of small side-project and, at first, our label weren’t even sure about releasing it.” Just one year on and the band are already preparing to unveil their not-so-long-awaited third album ‘A Different Kind of Fix’, which is due out later this month. Suren explains why Bombay Bicycle Club prefer not to waste too much time in between albums: “We never really planned it to happen like that. We’ve just put an album out when we have enough songs to put one together. It’s as simple as that.” He goes on to admit that the band’s recording schedule has not been quite as frantic as it may have appeared: “There are periods of high intensity when we are recording or touring, but in between those we like to take things easy. We’ll meet up for a practise every so often.” Going from forming the band just a few years ago to playing their first shows in the US and releasing three albums in three

years, it would seem that things have moved quite swiftly for Bombay Bicycle Club since their creation. However, Suren continues to downplay this impression: “The first few years for the band were actually quite slow because we were still at school and thought there wasn’t much point trying to really go for it until we had finished. I guess in the last year or two, it has felt like things have really started to take off, with ‘Flaws’ getting to Number Eight and playing to the biggest audiences we’ve ever played to at Glastonbury this year and last.” Ahead of a full headlining tour in October, Bombay Bicycle Club will be performing at a few more European festivals this month, including a rare appearance in Cornwall for Newquay’s Relentless Boardmasters. “We haven’t actually played in the South West all that much,” admits Suren. “We played in a mineshaft in Devon on a short acoustic tour we did a couple of years ago, which was an interesting experience.” He goes on to reveal what he is looking forward to most about the trip: “I’m looking forward to checking out some nice coastal scenery and maybe sampling a Cornish pasty or two.” Good man.

DJ Demonise At just seventeen years old DJ Demonise is causing giant waves in Newquay. 247’s Carly Squires caught up with him to discuss the local DnB Scene. At seventeen you are causing a stir amongst the mixing industry: what age did you begin DJing and what got you into it? I started DJing last year. From the age of four I have grown up surrounded by drum and bass and feel I have a great understanding of it. I also enjoy reggae, dance-hall, hip hop, grime, garage and dubstep but my true passion is drum and bass – and it’s this passion for drum and bass which has motivated me to DJ. So, where does the name DJ Demonise come from? The name came from a night out after a gig at Tall Trees in Newquay. I was looking at some pictures with my mate and one of the DJs, DJ Grudge, had red eyes in his picture. My mate said ‘look, he has demon eyes’ and I thought that would make a good DJ name so I changed my name to DJ Demonise. On your SoundCloud you explain that you are a ‘pure vinylist’. What is it about vinyl that you love? Vinylist? Well, it’s all about keeping the music industry up there and not letting it fall to the ground – there are a lot of people downloading records illegally, but I prefer to show my appreciation to the artist by buying vinyl instead. I also love the concept of vinyl like fighting with the pitch control, juggling it about and then rushing to get the next vinyl on to the beat and drop it in. Using vinyl is a lot harder to use as you don’t have an LCD display like you do with CDs and I enjoy that challenge. I have only ever used CDs as a last resort, vinyl would always be my first choice. Who are your biggest musical influences? My musical influences have to be LTJ Bukem, Mc Conrad,

Chase and Status, Goldie and Benga, but I grew up listening to the likes of LTJ Bukem and MC conrad. I had a tape cassette and would listen to them over and over again. They are legends. How has growing up in Newquay influenced your music? Newquay has influenced me as a DJ, as all the nightclubs support my style of music. When I am eighteen I would like the opportunity to possibly DJ at Red Square’s Code Red night. I’m part of the CSC Academy (Critical Sounds Cornwall) which is a youth scheme to help young people get the skills to be a good and confident DJ, which is run by a local Code Red – DJ Re-Defeat. He has been a big part in my DJ career so far by getting me gigs at Tall Trees, Relentless Boardmasters at Fistral Beach last year and the Eden Project. Big-ups to this guy. Do you enjoy performing locally? And can you explain a little bit more about ‘Code Red’? I do enjoy performing locally; I think Newquay has an excellent vibe which is great for performing. Dubstep and Drum and Bass are a very big scene in Cornwall due to the success of Code Red for example, a techno night at Red Square which is the hub of for the performance of drum and bass in Newquay. It’s definitely created a larger profile for Drum and Bass amongst Newquay and Cornwall in general. What are your aspirations for your musical career? I would like to perform, travel and produce some DnB and Dubstep and become incredibly successful within the industry. Ultimately I want to make something of my life to maybe show the next generation that anything can happen if you work hard for it.

Check out DJ Demonise on SoundCloud http://soundcloud.com/dj-demonise and look him up on Facebook.

Ginger at theRabbit As part of his new acoustic solo tour, Ginger of the Wildhearts is heading to Plymouth’s White Rabbit this month for some fun and games. Rachael D’Cruze catches up with him beforehand...

So, you’re heading to the mighty White Rabbit in Plymouth, at the end of this month, as part of your Acoustic Tour – have you played there before? I’ve played so many shows it’s pretty hard to remember exactly where I’ve played before. But if I have played there it was a fucking magical experience that I will never forget. Tell us about your Acoustic Tour – this is part II right? Is anyone touring with you? Yes, I’ll be joined by Chris Catalyst and Jon Poole, with Jackdaw 4 coming along as special guests. And the appearance of various hangers on and barely believable characters throughout the show should be expected. We downloaded your 16 track acoustic album, Potatoes And You (from http://gingerwildheart. bandcamp.com) for FREE. What’s the deal with this, have you always been so generous? We also released the second version of the ‘Best Of...’ album TEN for free, previous to this release, with completely different songs to the version available generally. I guess we’re just generous guys who love our fans.

believe in leaving a legacy behind that I’d be proud of, and that doesn’t happen by making things easy or being lazy, so I work hard. Is it important for you to play without The Wildhearts from time to time? It is important for me to play regularly. If The Wildhearts don’t want to play then I’ll play with someone else. I won’t be beholden to anyone to be active. I like to keep going. You’ve been touring a lot this summer and stormin’ plenty of festies – any highlights? Sonisphere was a definite highlight. The crowd were amazing and the musicians played a blinder. And the rest of the festival was pure joy. We had the best time imaginable.

“I believe in leaving a legacy behind that I’d be proud of, and that doesn’t happen by making things easy or being lazy, so I work hard”

Earlier this year you auctioned your Gibson Les Paul for charity, right? Well, y’know, I’m not a rich enough man to just give £17,000 out of my own pocket but I really wanted to help the people of Japan. I knew the guitar was an iconic piece that would have been very valuable to someone so I decided to sell that. I was delighted at how much it raised. You signed my t-shirt outside Wolves Civic about 15 years ago: The Wildhearts have been together for a long time – what’s your secret? My secret is, I guess, the fact that I love music. This never got predictable for me, or if it did I changed my surroundings. I

Are you writing/recording any new material at the moment – tell us what we’ve got to look forward to? Right now I’m mixing my new solo project album. The project is called Ginger Wildheart Mutation and the album is called ‘The Frankenstein Effect’, and it’s very heavy, very noisy and very challenging. I’ll be really happy when that one is in the bag. You’ve got a really great fan-base, but you give a lot back too and seem to make really good use of your website and social media. Are you, (like me) a bit of a technology geek? I’m woefully crap at all things technological but I love the supporters of my music. I believe in keeping in touch and being accessible. I’m easy to find and I reply to 99% of the questions given to me onhttp://www.formspring.me/ gingernyc So, we’re coming to see you. What can we expect in three words: Nothing but fun.

See Ginger play at the White Rabbbit, Plymouth on August 25th. Tickets from See Tickets (www.seetickets.com). See www.thewildhearts.com

Press Pack Sessions Presents

James Robinson Two Spot Gobi, a six-piece band who over the past five years have offered us an eclectic mix of rock guitar and brazen brass to create upbeat hits are back on the road again after the release of ‘The Sun Will Rise’. Loyal Plymouth boy and lead singer James Robinson joined Joe Biddle to discuss the bands increasing success, their good friend Jason Mraz and some exciting upcoming projects. We are excited to hear your feelings about the success of your second album, ‘The Sun Will Rise’: Our first album was rushed as we had date offers in the states and we needed a product to sell to try and make some money, so we recorded songs that we felt were at a good level and we were happy with it and it had lovely artwork. The second album, The Sun Will Rise, was recorded at the home of Jason Mrz in San Diego, California the year before last and it was a really wonderful experience. We had an awful lot of time in the studio on our own with the producer Niko Bolas coming and going to let us know if what we were doing was any good or total rubbish and he would then leave us with his comments. It was inspirational. So how did the bands relationship with Jason Mraz begin? It was one of his first few tours in the UK and he was supporting James Blunt at Plymouth Pavilions and he his night off happened to be the night that we had a gig at the venue behind Plymouth Pavilions formally known as The Hub. He strolled in and watched the whole gig and loved it and so we then went for a night out with him and we have been in touch ever since. He has done a lot of amazing things for us. I heard that he would also join you on stage for your live gigs. Well, he was recording his album at Kensal Town Studios in London at the time so if we had a London gig he’d jump on stage with us. Then when he released the album he extended the offer to touring the states. It was a beautiful thing for us because we had never done shows any bigger than two or three hundred people whom then grew to 6000 Americans. It was a priceless live experience. www.247magazine.co.uk

And what are your future plans? Well, our album has been a long time coming and we are really happy of it so we’re putting on launch parties wherever we can mainly along the South Coast. As well as that we have also launched a School Project. We are taking interactive workshops with kids of 14 years of age upwards, in which we go in and play, talk about ourselves for a bit and then we get them involved with playing music. The aim is because we have a cello and a trumpet and a band line up is that people that are at school playing those classical instruments can then relate them to a contemporary setting. We want to teach them all sorts of different styles of music and the importance of music at a time where the Government is slashing music and performance budgets. We are trying to make it clear to children that they can have a career through music and what is available to them. We have had amazing feedback from teachers and students, we have funding and we’re planning to take it to the states also. Does this relate to the modern music industry? I think that the beautiful thing about the current musical age is that there are so many challenges that drive us now to be that little bit better because there are so many bands to compete against and so many more platforms, such as Youtube, to express your creativity on. The DIY way is a cool thing. Two Spot Gobi will be playing at Mamma Stones, Exeter on the 27th September and Ride Café, Plymouth on the 29th September. For more information on Two Spot Gobi’s upcoming gigs please visit their website www.twospot. co.uk or for more information about the School Project please visit www.musicsetfree.com. In recent years we’ve all grown to love the convenience of the disposable BBQ. They cost a few quid and are pretty portable but you have to wait til they cool down to throw them away and you only get about half an hours grilling time. Why not upgrade to one of these? It’s still portable but is a bit more substantial.

6.

You’d be forgiven for thinking we’d become obsessed with buckets here at 247 Magazine, and you wouldn’t be far off. This here does what it says on the tin – with all you need for a series of outdoor games there’s hours of fun here. Items include whistle, bean bags, eggs and spoons, three-legged-race ties, Frisbee and even a score card for those competitive types.

It’s one of those tricks of the trade shared between seasoned festival goers – a hip flask is a must. While security aren’t gonna let you wander through the gates with a gert big bottle of spirits on display, you should be able to sneak in a slurp (4oz) of booze in this stylish vessel.

7.

Remember mix tapes? Our web editor still rocks with those but we realise she’s pretty much alone with that now iTunes appears to be taking over the world. But you can’t beat the intimacy of a carefully crafted mix tape and Mixa has come up with a modern day equivalent – the USB mixtape. You can basically copy a bunch of MP3s, artwork, photos, letters, anything you want really onto this tape shaped device and pass it on. Boom.

With so many decent beaches in the South West and the odd good wave, you cannot escape the appeal of surfing and body boarding and here we have some simple but stylish body boards to help you along your way. These were the original British surfboards from the 1950s and are 4ft tall and one foot wide. Stat.

Action Sports

Taking it to the Extreme Move over skaters there is a new hardcore hobby invading the ramps of the nation, writes Sam Hughes. It’s fast-paced, difficult and dangerous but it’s a craze that’s getting thrill seekers in a frenzy. With tricks reminiscent of moves derived from freestyle bmx and skateboarding, ‘Extreme Scootering’ is taking scooter riding to a whole new level. You only have to type extreme scootering into YouTube to see the abundance of people taking part in the sport, which has grown in popularity over the last few years.

One group of lads in particular have been increasing their repertoire of difficult tricks and stunts. Grip - a team of four youngsters from Helston in Cornwall, with ages ranging from 11 to 17, have been showing off their skills and making a name for themselves at competitions across the region, and one team member has even been named as the first rider in Cornwall to pull off a dangerous air-trick.

It is hard to say when the first scooter made an appearance but there are records of patents dating back to as early as the 1920s. Since then there have been many advancements in design and technology to make kick scooters more compact, lighter, stronger and more durable than their predecessors.

Riding as a team since September 2010, Ben Wilkinson, 17, Matt ‘Smiley’ Brown, 16, Jack Richards, 12, and Finn Timmins, 11, regularly practise their moves at Helston Skatepark, Mount Hawke Indoor Park or The Track in Portreath. The team is sponsored by shop of the same name ‘Grip’ in Meneage Street, Helston, which offers a large range of men and women’s clothing and has a dedicated scooter and skate department. Steve said: ‘The scooter team competes at every event in the South West. The most recent was the Xtreme Competition held at Mount Hawke. Matt was placed third, with Ben and Jack both placed in the top ten.

In the late 1990s the Micro Mobility Systems in Switzerland and the JD Corporation in Taiwan released the first collapsible scooter as micro-skate scooter, JDBug MS-130A. Other similar models started popping up, and across the globe riders were enjoying them in a new way developing new styles and tricks, leading to what we know now as freestyle scootering. But simple moves seemed not enough for some riders who were keen to push their scootering abilities to the limits, perfecting dramatic and dangerous stunts and creating the phenomenon of ‘Extreme Scootering’. Scootering enthusiasts use most skate park structures, including ramps, rails and boxes, but many also utilise street structures like steps, ledges, railings and gaps to pull off various tricks. Some riders concentrate on pushing their trick levels to the limit, while others enjoy more freestyle moves. And this increase in popularity for extreme scootering has not escaped us here in the South West.

‘Finn is on the Mutts Flow team which means he receives products from Mutts to further his scooter riding. Matt was on the flow team of Grit but because he has been performing so well, they have added him to the Grit Pro UK team.’ At 16 this is quite an achievement. Matt has been riding for three years and recently increased his repertoire of moves by pulling off a dangerous stunt... ‘Matt performed the first forward front-flip in Cornwall,’ said Steve. ‘He had been practising for many months and perfected it at the Portreath Track.’ Ben, Jack and Finn have all been riding for a year now and don’t look to be giving up the sport anytime soon — it looks as though this thrill seeking phenomenon is set to stay. Street Art

See No Evil

Instead of profiling the latest work on the streets or speaking to local artists, this month we are previewing what is set to be the biggest urban street art project ever undertaken in the South West, or indeed the UK. See No Evil is one of the most ambitious street art projects in Europe, set to transforg Bristol City Centre’s Nelson Street into one of the world’s largest street art exhibitions. Taking place from 14-20 August, the project has been 12 months in planning, and is all down to Bristolian street artist, Inkie. He said: “We have spent nearly 12 months negotiating and planning this major project, which will be the jewel in the crown of the city’s already buzzing art scene. We have invited some of the world’s most talented graffiti artists to bring their skills to city, and we have a number

of returning Bristolians’ to head up proceedings.” The artists will spend a week on their murals that will cover ten participating buildings on the street, concluding on the 20 August with the entire street being closed for a party to celebrate Bristol’s iconic street art and cultural status with various musical acts, animations and workshops. Although the artist list is still secret, we do know that New York veterans, Tats Cru and LA based photorealist designer El Mac are among those few announced as taking part so far, as well as local Bristol artists Mr Jago and Amsterdam based artist, Shoe. Will local hero Banksy be there too? You’ll have to check out the finished works at the free street party on 20 August to find out! More info at www.seenoevil-bristol.com or search ‘See No Evil’ on Facebook Images of previous work of the participating artists…

Music Arash Torabi

Backbone

Thee Faction Up The Workers

(Soviet Beret) Remember Dr Feelgood? Remember Karl Marx? Thee Faction certainly do. And the Surrey sextet see no reason why they can’t shove them both into a meat grinder and lovingly gorge on the militant mince. Of course there’s a danger of edging towards parody on ‘Marx My Main Man’ and ‘Join The Party’ but a little bit of comic relief never did The Flying Pickets any harm. ‘Customer’ and ‘Conservative Friend’ are far more convincing: R&B boot-swingers that could soundtrack any social revolution worth its weight. Incidentally, ‘Capitalism Is Good For Corporations, That’s Why You’ve Been Told Socialism Is Bad All Your Life’ is the alternative title to this album. That’s worth the entry fee alone, surely?

Chief

Apply Within

(Household Name) Political hardcore doesn’t have too many patrons in the British Isles, which is why we should be thankful for Liverpool’s hard-working Chief. ‘Apply Within’ sees the band covering all radical bases and beyond with volatile, melodic punk rock and unifying refrains, flying off on tangents at will (even into Sonic Boom Six territory on ‘A Place To Go’). ‘In The Name Of Life’ is a blistering defence of a woman’s right to choose, ‘Bevan Sent’ laments the privatisation of the NHS, ‘This Island’ warns of the rise of the far right, while ‘Exposures’ takes the police to task over their propensity for violence. Solid music, transparent opinions, all-inclusive ethos. What’s not to like?

Getting Over Being Under (Big Potato Records)

The music industry is cruel and unjust. The label (Heavenly) that propelled the dull & dreary Cherry Ghost into the Top 10, denied the same opportunity for its most exciting band, by dropping them. But the semi-Cornish/ part-London Loose Salute are now back on another label, with Getting Over… It builds on their debut, offering more folked-out bliss with a gentle country edge, topped-off with genius melodies and harmonies galore. Lisa’s lush vocals on Perhaps She’ll Fly, one of the album’s singles, have the power to melt. Ian’s serene voice shines on It’s A Beautiful Thing, the album’s opener. Every track is a winner, with strong songwriting, brilliant production and soothing string arrangements. An artistic triumph, like its predecessor.

Viva Brother

Famous First Words

Bodies of Water (Thousand Tongues)

Dave Pepper The Ram Project

(City Slang) Recreating someone else’s album – especially that of a proto-pop legend – from scratch may seem like the workings of a madman but that’s exactly what Dave Pepper has done with Paul McCartney’s 1971 opus, ‘Ram’. Meticulously recorded at home over a 30 day stretch, ‘The Ram Project’ is a note-for-note facsimile (replete with a loyal album sleeve parody) that exudes a wonderful pointlessness which is impossible not to warm to. Of course it helps that it sounds pretty damn great. Reinventing ‘Ram’ for the post-modern nu-folk generation may be the best or worst decision of Dave Pepper’s musical journey but that’s for him to fret over. For us, it’s an indulgence that proves too hard to resist.

Destroy It Yourself (Broken Tail Records)

Bristol singer/songwriter Barry Dolan is one of those hardworking acts, always on the road or writing new material – the best of which is showcased in this debut album. With obvious comparisons to Frank Turner and Chris TT, it is a wonder that Oxygen Thief cuts a lonelu figure in the angsty punk world of the South West. His frantic guitar and raw vocals capture the honest emotion poured into each song. Words On Walls has sniffs of Tellison and ends with the most impressive long note I’ve heard in a while. He racks things up another notch with Makoto Nagono, where his vocals and lyrics reach out to Rage fans. Lyrically, it’s a good mix of politics and feelings, though Modesty is Dead is a bit metaphor heavy mind.

Hard Fi

Killer Sounds

(Atlantic) It’s been a while since we heard from Hard Fi Imagination is clearly not high on the agenda, and you would be forgiven for thinking they’d for the band formerly known simply as split up but no. Riding on the wave of a headline “Brother”. They recently had to change their slot at this year’s Glastonbury festival, the name, after a court case involving another band Staines troupe have released their third album. with the same name. Lack of imagination also While there are hints of the typical staccato indie extends to the content of their debut album, rock with a side order of street Hard Fi sound with lazy writing and mainstream blandness (particularly in Stay Alive), this album embraces oozing out of every song. New Years Day not electro techniques to give it that 90s New Order only shares its title with the awful song by U2, vibe. Which kinda works. The problem we have but also a similar falsetto hook to Blur’s Girls & here is a lack of identity and songs like Fire In Boys. And his voice, complete with fake attitude, The House, for example, would not be out of is almost identical to Richard Archer’s (Hard-Fi). place on Take That’s next album. The lyrics are Like a factory, they churn out that dreaded indie- also a tad cringeworthy in places, especially the by-numbers music. unimaginatively titled Love Song.

(Specialist Subject)

Bristol pop-punk trio, Caves, have been making waves by touring themselves stupid around the UK and mainland Europe, which bodes well for debut album ‘Homeward Bound’. Reminiscent of Superchunk in style and delivery, the likes of ‘Taking On The World’ and ‘I’m Not Sorry’ are passionate and wiry paeans to friendship and inspiration, love and despair, with a wide-eyed sense of hope at every turn. On the downside, Louise Hanman’s voice has been mixed way too dry and feels disconnected from the music, resulting in a mix that lacks cohesion. Which is a real shame because they deserve better. Still, debut albums are supposed to be slightly awry affairs so just jump in and relish the emotional ride.

The Loose Salute

Laura Williams

Twist Again

LA band drop a third album, influenced by sophisticated ‘60s pop, similar to Scott Walker, Lee Hazelwood or Shangri-Las. ‘Influence’ is the key word- this is no pastiche. Their sense of adventure is blatantly obvious, and they colour the songs without resorting to any clichés. Vocals are shared between Meredith and David, with much of the sound powered by pianos, trumpets and strings. They create drama with One Hand Loves The Other, and tension with Mary Don’t You Weep. The drums are simple and direct, with floor tom, snare and tambourine creating a classic ‘60s feel. Soothing, deep and extremely enjoyable.

The Wild Swans

The Sound of Sunshine (Occultation)

Long-term member, Paul Simpson has a poetic, storytelling approach to lyrics, and he paints vivid pictures of his hometown and the world around him. His rich vocal tones sit on a widescreen landscape of guitars & piano, backed with powerful and slick drumming. The band is an important part of the British postpunk movement that created (amongst many), Echo & the Bunnymen. This album features two Bunnymen: Les Pattinson (bass) and Will Sergeant on guitar for one song. Also onboard is Ricky Maymi from Brian Jonestown Massacre. The album features recent singles, English Electric Lightning and Liquid Mercury. A timeless sound, beautifully produced.

Charlie Simpson Young Pilgrim (Nusic)

I tried to approach this album with no preconceptions, but as I popped the CD in the drive all I could hear in my head was ‘What I Go To School For’. Nevertheless, Simpson’s surprisingly mature vocals, coupled with a much less poppy indie-folk sound and some commendable lyrics managed to quash my preconceptions, almost entirely. Until, right at the end of the album when his vocals lost their way a bit and returned to the more established Simpson - whiney US teen punk pop ahoy. The press notes compare him to The National, which is laughable really, but there is definitely a lot more substance – along the lines of Travis, Neil Finn or Dave Grohl.

REM

Life’s Rich Pageant (25th Anniversary Edition)

(Capitol/I.R.S) It doesn’t seem that long ago I was gushing about the Nick Cave remasters and now I’m going to do the same with this. When you’ve got dusty old albums from yesteryear they have a tendency to sit on the shelf and it can take a beautiful shiny reissue like this for you to fall in love again. Originally released in 1986, Life’s Rich Pageant marked the beginning of an era for REM and it’s easy to see why. Iconic songs such as Fall On Me pack a youthful punch and spit in the face of those critics who dub REM MoR radio-friendly dirge. In fact, there’s not a bad song on the album. Ignore the tracklisting though cos the number’s don’t tally up. www.247magazine.co.uk

Grandaddy

The Sophtware Slump: Deluxe Edition

(Universal/V2) A monumental leap from the perfectly likeable fuzz-pop leanings of debut Under The Western Freeway, this deluxe edition of 2000’s The Sophtware Slump is a welcome opportunity for reappraisal of one of the decades landmark indie albums. Painstakingly recorded and produced by main man Jason Lytle, the Sophtware Slump’s themes of technological decay, the beauty of nature and alienation had been hinted at in Grandaddy’s previous work but here were rendered in Technicolor; radiant and often beautifully, desperately sad. This reissue boasts a second disc packed with demos, b-sides and unreleased songs - some real gems that fans of the parent album will lap up.

Washed Out

Within and Without (Sub Pop)

One man band, Ernest Greene’s debut full length finally sees that light of day after a trickle of well-received EP’s and singles. Despite the promise of those early releases it becomes apparent over the course of an album that Greene’s nom de plume is unfortunately apt. Whilst in small doses the sun-dazed, synthdoziness is appealing, here it’s just too samey and there’s nothing to really match any of the highlights of his earlier EP’s. However, given time details emerge; subtleties which genuinely enrich Greene’s material and make it stand slightly apart from his previous work. Still perhaps, too little too late for Washed Out to truly ride the momentum of their previous hype.

The Thrills 2002-2007

(EMI Catalogue) The career of The Thrills sums up the fortunes of any number of young guitar based bands to whom the world was promised around a decade ago. An initial surge of hype and then a best-selling debut album, a second record that underwhelmed followed by a third effort that barely registered. On their best known work, the Motown flavoured One Horse Town and Santa Cruz (You’re Not That Far) and Big Sur’s unashamed bash at Lovin’ Spoonful/Monkees West Coast Pop, they still sound thoroughly average. The lyrical content seems to mainly consist of singer Conor Deasy yelping a string of American place names and references to ‘the kids’ and the like.

Beirut

The Rip Tide

(Pompeii Records) Over the last five years Beirut has grown from Zach Condon’s flugelhorn and uke-strewn, Balkan folk-aping bedroom project into an internationally popular, influential indie force. The Rip Tide, his strongest effort yet, suggests that his phone isn’t about to stop ringing any time soon. There is a maturity to The Rip Tide as a whole in that for the first time it does not feel as if Condon is in the business of simply araphrasing his current musical infatuation. Here rather, is a collection of sumptuously arranged, beautifully played songs that suggest that his influences have been assimilated and manifested themselves as something glorious and peculiar to Condon himself. www.247magazine.co.uk

Pete Rock and Smif n Wessun Monumental

(Duck Down Music) There was a time when anything Pete Rock touched was massive and Smif n Wessun had the underground cats buzzin, time sure have changed. Pete is still the man on the boards, tight beats and well chosen loops and my head is nodding more than it has all week, this feels like a good album but not a great one. Smif n Wessun are on point and there are enough decent collabo’s, good to see Memphis Bleek and Black Rob doing something again, I must say though that Pete needs someone to dig him some new samples, the beats are fine but it’s 2011, surely someone of his status shouldn’t be using double barrel and Mikey Dread soundclips.

Wu Tang Clan

Legendary Weapons (E1 records)

From the first track this album has set itself up to take you on with your misconceptions, Wu Tang still ain’t nuthin to frack with. The last Wu collabo album used a sample that I also used on my Amie J track but they had it replayed. This whole album seems the same, take a great soul sample, get it replayed and keep the publishing, to be honest though when it bangs like this, who cares. Like all Wu albums the level of greatness is usually a direct relation to which clan members are present, Raekwon, Rza, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Cappadonna, Inspectah Deck and U god, good enough for ya? Throw in M.O.P., Terminalogy and even AZ and this amounts to an album that won’t put NY back in the game but at least doesn’t make you shake your head in despair.

Classified

Hand Shakes and Middle Fingers

(Tectonic Recordings) Decon records are on form right now, putting out different levels of hip hop and mostly on point. First track is an anthem waiting to happen, other tracks just add more and more notches, in a month where I’ve reviewed hip hop icons for this to stand head and shoulders above them tells you a whole lot more. Tight beats, crossover tracks, club bangers of the non jiggy kind, and even a collabo with the legendary Brother Ali where classified holds his own. This guy deserves to blow on this one.

Sully

Carrier

(Keysound Recordings) It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a dubstep track makes me think back to Archangel by Burial rather than all the wubububwubwubwubububstep. The feel of this album is like the sun setting, it’s not dark like night but evokes a certain sadness, not to say that this album is a disappointment. I was taken back by the skill of the jump from funky as in uk funky to dubstep rhythms to almost jungle like but beats but with a light feel rather than a club bang. What stands heads and shoulders above everything though is intricate use of sounds blended and cut together to build an emotional landscape that fills you with a sense of melancholy, beautiful melancholy at that. An album to wallow in, an album to watch the sun set and an album to smoke to.

Skanky Panky Vol. 3 (Skanky Records)

This collection of tunes is full of glitch and loaded with bass. My personal favourite is track 3, a tune by an artist called Stickybuds, the tune being named Boh Riddim! It fuses a familiar ragga vocal with big, heavy glitch hop until the final leg of the track when the anti is upped by rolling into a heavy rolling D&B beat that will not fail to get you stomping. Track 4 is brought to you by Son of A Glitch featuring Adam Rowdyman. The track named Together has a nice bass sound to it along with a vocal giving it more of a glitch pop feel. Well worth a listen, you may find yourself surprised.

The Count and Sinden Mega Mega Remix

(Domino Recordings) The Count and Sinden have firmly stamped their print on the industry, hitting out with some dance-floor bangers that would get anyone jigging in the rave. Track 5 stands out to me, the bass on this track rolls out in abundance along with a garage style beat, in fact the track is actually called Roll Out as well which is very suited. Elephant 1234 also hits some garage styles with the beat as well as the odd garage sounding samples along with a contrasting darkness taking down a unique route. Track 8, Mega is just that, it is quite simply a massive tune that you need to hear, especially if old skool UKG is your thing.

Various

Superclub Ibiza

(EMI) For all of you Ibiza enthusiasts out there, this is one that will keep you happy for hours. Cream, Pacha and Gatecrasher have teamed up to bring you this mega collection of tunes. Cream takes care of disc 1 celebrating 17 years on the island. You will find tunes from heavyweights like Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, Eddie Halliwell, Laidback Luke plus more. Disc 2 is Pasha’s with some big hitters like Badman Riddim by Vato Gonzalez and The Trumpeter by Ray Foxx. Not to mention the remix of the classic King of my Castle. Gatecrasher is on top of disc 3 with more anthems than you can shake at stick at, well worth checking out.

Kech and Charlie Kane

Satan Stole My Y Fronts (Bleach

Feast Records) This EP brings you house in a progressive style as well as with some chunkier sounds for the bass fanatics. The title track, Satan Stole My Y Fronts handles a chunkier side of things along with some nice piano stabs in the lead up. Some of the others are not so bass heavy but they key into a sound of their own. Track one is progressive building up nicely throughout. Track 3, Control Me is on more of a chilled vibe whilst track 4 gets back to more of a stomp. The final track finishes off the EP nicely with a remix of Spiral Tribe’s - Criminal Drug. If you are into your house, you can’t go too far wrong

Music Louk

Andreas Kraemer + Thomas Pogadl + DJ Update

www.wildbite-music.com This duo have produced over two hundred releases in the last decade under their various aliases (such as Schwarze Puppen, Solid Sleep, Junk Project, Skysurfer) and many more. Here they team up with Dutch DJ/Producer legend Dano under his ‘DJ Update’ name and deliver this monster of a techno release, ‘Highly Addictive’ is my pick, a cut that’s not too pacey but definitely packs a mean punch to it! It has been my set opener on a couple recent plays and mixes and is perfect for setting the mood for something dark and twisted just how we like it!

Human Resouce Dominator (Swartz + Schulner Mix) www.myspace.com/ unitecrecordings

It’s been remixed to death, but not many have taken the classic Dominator by Human Resource and turned in a version that still retains the charm of the original track but with fresh modern production twists. Dutch supremo’s Swartz + Schulner however have done exactly this, with frenetic percussion, lots of intricate fills and edits and featuring the vocals and hoover stabs that made this 1991 classic on 80 AUM so popular. This track was the opening track for my set at Defqon 1 in Holland last month and it certainly did the damage, look out for this as it should move from white label to an official release very soon.

Hardforze Meets Suae Inception (Nomad Mix)

www.hardforze.com.au Australia’s Nomad has had myself and Wragg pretty much foaming at the mouth whenever we hear his productions and neither of us had any hesitation in signing him up to Compulzion or Atmosphere. What’s so classy about his production is the fact he manages to take all the popular elements of classic hard trance and add new depths resulting in something that crosses over and sounds rocking on the loudest of speakers. His remix of fellow ‘Australians Hardforze + Suae is exactly this, featuring a rather dark introduction before letting loose with a gorgeous uplifting melody and a piercing kick and bassline which has proven its worth at festivals and big rooms.

Dirty Demons

Dark Reflection www.nuttytrance.co.uk Dirty Demons are the pairing of Blutonium Records ‘Nutty T’ and Luca DHF (aka Candyman01), who is promoter of the successful ‘DHF’ nights in London (one hell of a party that is definitely worth checking out!). The original of this is quite a sinister number and has remixes from Nutty T himself and also Newquay’s very own Dave J (from Insurrection) who turns in a hard reworking. However the mix of this that does it for me the most the Antolini and Montorsi remix. This takes the original and adds lots of hardstyle influenced elements but still retains the trancey vibe of the original. This has done the damage for me when played out and is more than worthy of a spin.

The Horn The Hunt www.thehornthehunt.com

The Horn The Hunt don’t just stop at weird, obtuse names for their act. Strangeness and experimentation appears throughout their excellent album. Depressor Jolie is a trip-hop album of sorts, taking in influences from the ancient sounds of the Far East to modern acts like Bjork in “Harpoon”, then recalling memories of English folk in “Old Town Cow”. Clare Carter’s vocal is a close match to that of Shirley Manson in “Pleasureland” or Nina Persson in “Be The One”. The result is a dark mix of swooping, breathy vocals over imaginative beats and complex synthetic sounds. This is the unnerving point where chill out becomes chilling. Spooky, clever and strangely alluring.

Electric Skies

www.electricskiesmusic.com Exeter’s four piece Electric Skies have an indie pop sound much like that of the Warm Jets, Athlete and, at times, Idlewild. “Youth Is Everything” is a bland transatlantic affair with songs like “Hello Friend” casting their eye on the US teen party market. The record’s lyrics are inconsequential and inoffensive enough: all clichés about the “long road home”, watching “the sun rise too far” and “staring in the mirror”. Your standard dreams versus regrets fare, really. This doesn’t make Electric Skies a bad band as such. At a time when Coldplay can still beat off naysayers with a headlining Glastonbury set, there will always be space for bands such as Electric Skies. Mediocre.

Thomas Heath

www.thomheath.co.uk/music Thomas Heath has broken away from his alter ego, “How Biology Works”, to showcase material from three EPs he released under that name. This self-titled collection of songs is as eclectic as it is good. Album opener, the heartbreaking “What We Could Be” might as well be Thom Yorke with an acoustic, while “Just A Child” could be Hot Chip and Muse duetting Nina Simone’s “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. Elsewhere “A Song About Robots” is nothing short of a love song to an automaton. This is a pick and mix selection of songs. One minute there are ukuleles, the next it’s all distorted keyboard sounds. Sometimes silly, sometimes poignant - always fascinating.

Hollowed Out The Sea www.myspace.com/ hollowedoutthesea

If you can wrap your head round the concept of hollowing out the sea, as it seems the Jonathan Francis (aka Hollowed Out the Sea) has, his rather odd little double A-sider may be just your thing. The “City Surf/Space Money” single is filled with electronic interpretations of garage band experimentalism with a hint of the orient. Which isn’t a sentence I was expecting to type when I got up this morning. Exactly what space money is or how you would surf in the city, no one can be sure. Nevertheless, these two songs remain oddly charming, hinting at the experimentalism of Gorillaz and Lemon Jelly and then some.

Backbone

Mama Tokus & the Sons of Bitches

www.mamatokus.com Press reporter, funk soul sister, face about town and champion of swing with a swing, Mama (Katie) Tokus is a Plymouth legend. Her debut solo offering, ‘On The Ragtime’, is a triumph of modern-day feminism set against a backdrop of olden-day sounds (courtesy of the SOBs) laced with humour and heart. Music hall, blues and gospel all get a look-in as Tokus sets out her spicy stall on the likes of ‘(Too Busy To) Reproduce’ and ‘Wifebeater’: a righteous retort to a misogynistic Lee Dorsey number. From Barrelhouse Annie via the Sex Pistols to Curtis Mayfield and Dinah Washington, MT covers all unpredictable bases with gusto and guts aplenty. Just what the soul doctor ordered.

Sons of Sirus

www.facebook.com/sonsofsirius For Newquay-based grebos, Sons Of Sirius, it’s all about the Retro Riff. Their three song demo kicks off with ‘Reason For Reason’, a psycherock head-shaker that has all the makings of a Led Zep-pilfering anthem, relying on simplicity, sweet vocal layers and early-‘70s sensibilities. ‘Neptune’s Concubine’ updates the template with a quasi-grunge stomp a la Screaming Trees; while ‘Lay Me Down’ drags SOS back to the past with a blooz-rock motif straight out of the Clutch School Of Rock Pedigree. The only thing that lets the side down a little is the lead vocalist’s tendency to keep things ‘authentic’ at the expense of inventiveness.

Head of Programmes www.myspace.com/ headofprogrammes

Plymouth’s Head Of Programmes are always welcome at 247 Towers and ‘Spring’ is no exception. Released through the venerable onec Records, this mini-album of death and rebirth has all the hallmarks of James MacGregor’s signature sound: desolate chords, baritone despair, plaintive guitars and Nick Cave tempos. ‘Break’ in particular is a song wrung from overwhelming emotional suffering to the point where the hi-hats could be the drip-dripping of tears, if you were given to such cheesy prose. The spectre of Bill Calahan still looms large in MacGregor’s clipped baritone confessions but I’m beginning to hear it the other way around. Which can only mean that, through persistence and quality control, HOP are coming into their own.

Pocket Magnetic

www.pocketmagnetic.com The new single from Plymouth’s leftfield, Krautrock aficionado, Pocket Magnetic, is a very peculiar poodle. First song, ‘Lodestar’, is a slice of melancholic electronica that sounds like Hot Chip being courted by Neil Tennant. Or is it Kraftwerk necking with a softly-spoken Paul Weller? Conversely, ‘Body On The Beach’ is a curious Kraut-pop ditty that sounds like Man Or Astroman? strolling through the forest with Depeche Mode. Or is it the B52s holding hands with Marc Almond? It’s all too close to call. But I like it a lot. Anyone with this much interest in replicating sounds from an overlooked era of synthedelica deserves a wider audience. And, you never know, you may learn something too. www.247magazine.co.uk

Food

Grab a great British burger Exeter Sausage & Grill

44 Queen Street, Exeter EX4 3SR / 01392 422999 www.exetersausageandgrill.com

All sausages, and even the sauces and condiments, at Exeter Sausage & Grill are created in-house, and all food & drinks come from local suppliers (the meat and dairy products are all free-range). The restaurant and bar areas have an arty and modernistic feel – the basement even serves as a nightclub, with recent DJ sets from Brandon Block and Alex P... The ES&G BBQ is the mother of all BBQ dishes, and it’s beautifully presented on a wooden chopping block. It consists of one of their own tasty pork sausages, a mini beef burger (complete with bun and salad), a large tiger prawn, a stack of thick and tasty chips, coleslaw, lamb kebab, couscous, corn on the bob and a pot of freshly-made BBQ sauce. It’s easy to see why this restaurant has been awarded a Bronze Medal by the Taste of the West Awards 2010. Vegetarian food is available too, and there’s also plenty of choice on the pudding menu. Buy their in-house sausages to take home, for your own BBQ. Lunch is served from 12pm – 2.30pm (closed Monday lunchtime), dinner from 5pm – 10.00pm (Mon – Fri) and 6pm –10.00pm on Saturday and to 9pm on Sundays. Brunch: Sat & Sun from 11.00am. Sunday Lunch: 12pm – 3pm. Arash Torabi

FALMOUTH The Shed

6/7 Tidemill House, Discovery Quay, Falmouth, TR11 3XP / 01326 318502 Where the most iconic American dish of all time is concerned, in Falmouth, if quality, value for money, and taste are what you’re after, there’s only one place to go for a burger: The Shed. If you’re after a classic, The Shed burger is made from quality Cornish beef, succulent and full of flavour. It comes served in a bun with salad and a delicious red onion marmalade, topped with bacon and mozzarella, and accompanied by some of the best French fries Cornwall has to offer; a very satisfying fare. For the burger without the beef, as part of their newly unveiled summer menu, try the new Hallumi and marinated pepper burger with hummus; I cannot rave about this burger enough, it is culinary genius. For me the only thing that could follow a burger of such distinction is The Shed Sundae, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, with clotted cream and lashings of chocolate sauce, maple syrup and nuts. Or if you’re feeling a little full, perhaps have a browse of their extensive cocktail list instead. Tucked away in Discovery Quay, The Shed’s kitsch décor provides a pleasant atmosphere to sit and dine under cover. If the sun is out, enjoy the outdoor seating with views of the marina, for a coffee or a cold beer. Open everyday from 9.30am – midnight (Sunday to 11pm) Hannah Giles www.247magazine.co.uk

PLYMOUTH Blues Bar and Grill

8 The Parade, The Barbican, Plymouth / 01752 257345 www.bluesbarandgrill.co.uk The Blues Bar and Grill on the Barbican, Plymouth is the epitome of BBQ and Grill food and is at the forefront of Plymouth entertainment too. The menu is choc full of BBQ favourites, all with a southern USA drawl. From the Cajun blackened chicken taking care of New Orleans, to the Texan BBQ chicken wings, the authentic cooking is backed up by a soundtrack that is second to none. The Burgers on the menu are really where the Blues Bar and Grill shines though. Huge thick meat burgers, smothered with your choice of toppings served with home made slaw and the perfectly crisp skinny fries make for a real treat and the vege burgers are also of a very high quality. Blues Bar and Grill isn’t what you would call cheap, what with some establishments offering beer and a burger for half the price, but in all seriousness, smash the piggy bank and work up an appetite because you will want to come back time and time again! Expect daily entertainment from the greatest local blues talent, and a history of blues literally plastering the walls, one could be forgiven for trying to stay long past drinking up time. Check out the website for what’s on and when. Open everyday noon until late. Neil Dodd

TRURO One Eyed Cat

116 Kenwyn Street, Truro, Cornwall TR1 3DJ / www.oneeyedcat.co.uk The One Eyed Cat in Truro delivers BBQ faves such as meaty burgers and king prawns, as well as an abundance of other delights in a relaxed, swanky setting. The eatery boasts a gigantic menu and gigantic portions – this is reflected in the price of some of the mains. However, the food and friendly atmosphere warrant the slightly high price tag, and if you’re trying to save the pennies there’s an array of light bites on offer that won’t break the bank. Although, you might be tempted to delve into your wallet/purse to sample the wonderful selection of European lagers and intriguing cocktails. Us Brits are quite mad for a good burger, and there’s nothing more disappointing than being handed a charred puck of carbon in a bun. Thankfully the beef burger served with blue cheese, zingy relish, skinny fries and salad, was juicy, flavoursome and didn’t disappoint. This charismatic restaurant is a must for the summer months; whether it’s dining outside, or taking sanctuary from the usual British summer nestled in the comfy lounge. Open Sunday to Thursday, 10am – 12pm, Friday to Saturday 10am – 2am. Ben Perks magazine | 27

Film MUST

SEE

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (TBC)

Released 11 August Dir: Rupert Wyatt Starring: James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgowm Brian Cox, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton 2011/US/TBC Everyone’s heard of Planet of the Apes right? That iconic, classic film which tells of a time when apes take over the planet – to the detriment of humanity. Here we have the back story to that (in a similar vein to X-Men: First Class, which we previewed a couple of months back), Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a reality-based cautionary tale that blends science fiction and science fact, which depicts how mankind’s hubris leads to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Oscarwinning visual effects house Weta Digital – employing certain of the groundbreaking technologies developed for “Avatar” – will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors – making this a must-see film We’ve teamed up with Twentieth Century Fox to give away five Rise of the Planet of the Apes goodie packs. To be in with a chance of winning visit www.247magazine.co.uk for details.

The Best of the Rest.... CONAN:THE BARBARIAN

THE FINAL DESTINATION 5

SUPER 8Released: 31 July

Released 26 August Dir: Marcus Nispel Starring: Rachel Nichols, Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan 2011/US/TBC In this 3D remake of the seminal John Milus film the raw masculinity of Arnold Swartzenegger is replaced by Jason Momoa whose is more metro-sexual that the Governator. In this reworking Conan is after revenge for the death of his father. If this is anything like the original it should be great fun. Decapitations and limbs flying towards the audience in glorious 3D should make for a fun fuelled experience. Let’s hope they keep the slightly odd Nietzschian philosophy and psychedelic settings from the original.

Dir: Steven Quale Starring: Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, and Arlen Escarpeta 2011/US/TBC They’ve made another one! Not content with stalking fatalistic teenagers in the previous 4 instalments, Death returns for another crack at some hapless Americans. This time it’s a group of people who survive a bridge collapsing when they all should have fallen to their deaths. Just as in the previous film, which was supposedly The Final Destination, it has been shot in 3D which should keep the series’ discerning fan-base happy.

Dir: J.J Abrams Starring: Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard and Amanda Michalka 2011/US/112 min The creative mind behind Cloverfield and producer Steven Spielberg join forces to create a thriller shrouded in secrecy. Set in the 1970s the film centres around a group of teenage filmmakers witnessing a devastating train crash, which they capture the action on Super 8 cameras, hence the title. The characters soon learn that something or someone in the train wreck could cause bigger damage to the whole of their town... It’s got hit written all over it.

COWBOYS AND ALIENS

THE INBETWEENERS MOVIE

THE SMURFS 3D Released:

Released: 19 August Dir: Jon Favreau Starring: Daniel Craig, Paul Dano, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, and Sam Rockwell 2011/US/TBC This interesting genre mixer sees a bunch of cowboys, fresh from taking on the Apache, who decide to mess with a burly bunch of extra-terrestrials.The blonde-Bond Daniel Craig plays an amnesiac gunslinger, who strolls into a town called Absolution (why not call it Lowerstoft?).He finds that his past troubles with “the law” disappear when he and the other occupants of the town come under attack from aliens. It also stars Harrison Ford who crops up as a tough as nails Colonel.

Released: 19 August Dir: Ben Palmer Starring: Simon Bird, James Buckley and Blake Harrison 2011/UK/TBC Will, Neil, Simon and Jay, are back but this time on the big screen. In this adventure the quartet have finished school and are off for a lad’s holiday in Crete. Pubescent jokes and drinking will be top of the agenda. The Inbetweeners has been classic comedy on the small screen, but will it convert to the multiplex? Harry Enfield in Kevin and Perry Go Large underwent the same transition and that was pretty unsuccessful, but there is always hope.

Released: 10 August Dir: Raja Gosnell Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, and Kevin James 2011/US/TBC The little, cutesy, blue creations are off for a big screen adventure and this time it’s in 3D. Good kiddie friendly fun involving some bonkers plot about an ancient evil coming back to bother the Smurfs – maybe it didn’t like the colour blue! Anyway should give the kids some welcome entertainment and hopefully the 3D will be more eye-popping than headache inducing. Words: John Barker

BETH ROWLEY, B-Side at Bunters, £free. Supporting Crowns.

Sat 13 As befits their sonic demeanour, HEAD OF PROGRAMMES launched their new EP with a low-key show at Jack Chams (Plymouth, 19th June). But low-key doesn’t mean low-flow. Jim MacGregor’s country brio is made of stern, powerful stuff despite the melancholy that runs thickly through his songs. Dutch neo-folksters and strangers to the city, GOODWIN SANDS, had the crowd eating out of their hands within two songs – and if that isn’t a sign of innate goodness, I don’t know what is. Caught halfway between First Aid Kit’s earthly coo and the indie breeze of Laura Marling, the quartet rely on close vocal harmonies and understated instrumental thrum to soothe away the pains of being pure at heart. Lovely. The further away we move from the denim’n’patchouli splurge of ‘70s heavy rock, the better it sounds when new bands revisit it. Take the absurdly monikered (and attired) VALIENT THORR (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 20th June). Sure they look like the grizzled ghosts of Hawkwind – all hair and metal hilarity – but their balls-to-the-wall riff wielding is an exercise in expertise. Plymouth beercore quartet, RAPTOR PARTY, made a fine hardcore noise. Whether we ever see them again is another matter as they only formed to play this show. Biffer! Seattle’s FLEET FOXES may not be the most explosive of bands to bring this year’s Eden Sessions to a close but they’re certainly more conducive to the eco-righteous surroundings than most (Eden Project, Cornwall, 1st July). They shuffled onstage with a noticeable nonchalance but as soon as the opening salvo of ‘The Cascades’ and ‘Grown Ocean’ wrapped themselves gleefully around your heartstrings, it was only a matter of moments before you were wishing that all music sounded like this, not just Crosby, Stills & Nash. Vocalist Robin Pecknold’s social anxiety may be evident but it only added to the universal feeling of empathy. While the band, visually ineffective for the most part but brimming with confidence, imbued the songs with a deft touch not seen on these shores since the equally magnificent Midlake last waltzed into view. THE BEES opening set was a lacklustre and pedestrian affair, the band oblivious even to their own disinterest. Conor O’Brien’s VILLAGERS, on the other hand, were a revelation, especially when the harrowing lilt of ‘On A Sunlit Stage’ and the beguiling ‘Becoming A Jackal’ turned us all into gibbering wrecks. There’s something frustratingly underwhelming about SOCIAL DISTORTION that has kept me from falling for their Route 66 brand of punk rock for a lifetime (Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 7th July). It might be something to do with the fact that even their best songs sound like they could have been written in that brief period between wiping one’s arse and washing one’s hands. Rudimentary melodies, mediocre riffs, over-egged symbolism: if Mike Ness wasn’t a man of such good character and rock’n’roll notoriety, nobody would give a shit about these pedestrian vignettes. It’s official. The English Defence League are the laughing stock of Plymouth. Their piffling march through the city (but not the centre – Unite Against Fascism won the war of territories) was a pointless exercise in misinformed hate-mongering and thinly veiled racism (9th July). By contrast, the anti-EDL counter-protest was a celebratory, allinclusive affair that moved noisily through the high street, returning to Voodoo Lounge for live music (from KELLY KEMP, PATRICK JAMES PEARSON, us and more) and DJs. As expected, a handful of goons tried to gatecrash the party but an ever-vigilant throng of activists kept them at bay. The next time they visit with their crypto-patriotic poison, make sure you’re there to greet them See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
