NEWS Calvin Harris at Eden + Vampire Weekend
THIS THIS MONTH MONTH WE WE ARE... ARE... …Waving goodbye! Well I am, the magazine isn’t going anywhere! After spending the last four years as the Editor of 247 Magazine, I am off to work with super cool PR company Coffin on Cake. I’ve had an absolutely brilliant time working at the magazine – being the editor is a kickass job and I’m proud to say I’ve been part of a creative, talented team, who make one of the best free regional magazines in the country. It’s also been great to be able to work in such a cool job and still live in the South West – who says you have to move to London to get a great job in the media? Ha! I’ll be sad to leave, and would like to thank Nigel for giving me the chance to be the editor all those years ago. Big shout out to all those who have contributed to the magazine over the last four years, thank you. I’ve met some great people, made some lovely friends and have generally had a awesome time. Love Lauren xxx

This years Eden Sessions have certainly stirred music fans into life across the region. Whilst great debates about the choice of acts rage online, we are pleased to see that Eden have booked a wide range of bands appealing to a range of different tastes, outside of the usual indie/ mainstream festival bands. Hence, 2010 sees the first big Dance themed Sessions with the mighty Calvin Harris headlining on Sat 3 July, supported by the Audio Bullys and Radio 1’s queen of mash up, Annie Mac. Another Session gig just announced as we went to press is New York indie quartet, Vampire Weekend returning to headline their own Session, after supporting The Raconteurs in 2008 at Eden. This time around, attention is all focused on them, with Broken Bells as support. For these that are unfamiliar, Broken Bells are an indie-rock duo comprising Brian Burton (other wise known as Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley fame) and James Mercer, lead singer and guitarist for The Shins. The group released their self-titled debut last month to critical acclaim and a top-ten berth in the US charts. Tickets for both these Sessions, alongside the already announced Mika are on sale for £35 + booking fee direct from Eden Box Office 01726 811972.

Dopescribes DopeScribes are a Falmouth-based hip hop duo comprised of members, Dead Giveaway (Seth Coburn) and Cae Grey (Spencer Woods). Emerging in Falmouth’s music scene in 2008, the double act have advanced since their humble beginnings on the open mic circuit to take a more active role in the South West music scene, performing at a variety of venues across Cornwall and supporting recognised hip hop acts including Skinnyman in ’09 and more recently Louis Logic. Following a stint in the drum and bass community DopeScribes are now determined to revive the local hip hop scene, distancing themselves from Cornwall’s reputation for ‘novelty’ hip hop acts yet unwavering in their focus on representing music in the South West. Unconcerned with the commerciality of chart hip hop and uninterested in perpetuating a negative image, the duo’s sound caters to a more seasoned audience who prize penmanship over promos. Dopescribes tell tall tales of life in the doldrums between bouts of multisyllabic wordplay, recounting sombre love stories with hard hitting sincerity before erupting into vibrant verses of shameless self-promotion. In a grime and dubstep dominated climate DopeScribes’ variety is a clear indication of their intent to return to the roots of British hip hop. Absorbed in promoting musical talent in the South West, DopeScribes’ firm belief in the potential for a hip hop movement in Cornwall is the reason behind their newest venture – Lost and Proud on the 3rd June, at Toast in Falmouth. Planned as a monthly event, their objective is to supply a forum for local hip hop acts and performance poets to perform and promote themselves, encouraging collaboration between artists to encourage the growth of a healthy scene.

So what are you up to right now? We’re out here in Boston at the moment. There’s ten of us out in the States doing the live show with a tour bus. We just did two nights in New York, started in Chicago and now we are headed down towards Asheville. Tell us about the latest LP then. I read somewhere that you’d gone back to a more solo based way of working to get it done? Is that a fair way of describing it? Well no I think it’s the same as it’s always been. ‘Days to Come’ was still...
But there will come a time by the end of the year I’ll be thinking, “Right, stop! No more tour buses or airports.” It comes around in cycles. How do you generally write songs? I picture you as a kind of sonic painter. What comes first…beat, melody, chord sequences, or just sounds? There’s no regimented way of starting. It’s usually just a process of experimentation. I’ll usually just try and find melody and rhythm within an abstract sound, especially in a track like ‘Kiara’ off the new album. The
Yeah because you’ve got these certain things in your headspace, things you’re referencing at that exact time. So I try to get as much done as I can and try to do a tune in one session even if that means staying up till 7am. You’re only going to be in that place once so you have to capture it when you can. I was just listening to the track ‘Black Sands’ and it gets pretty epic with full orchestral involvement. Do you ever do a big track in the studio and then think, ‘Shit! How are we going to do that live?’ No, I’ve never compromised the music
“I’VE NEVER COMPROMISED THE MUSIC FOR THE SAKE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO PERFORM IT” Words: Glyn Griffiths
One of the biggest challenges in any musician’s career is to rise above the pigeon-holes of their era to be recognised as truly outstanding musicians. Like many other electronica artists of the last decade, creating atmospheric music that wasn’t easily defined, Bonobo’s music has often been unhelpfully labelled as ‘lounge’, which doesn’t do credit to the artistry behind it. Fans love his rich sonic landscapes, richer in melody and lighter on the beats than some of his contemporaries like Amon Tobin, Matthew Herbert or Aphex Twin. Bonobo’s latest album ‘Black Sands’ displays his full range of talents from lush folky instrumentals, songs with Ninja Tunes’ rising star Andreya Triana, and upbeat abstract electronica. Griff from Jelly Jazz caught up with Bonobo in the middle of promoting the LP in the US.

...a solo record really. They all are. The process has been the same since I started out. It’s always just been me sat in a small studio with a few machines. I think there’s a misconception that it’s a more collaborative collective thing. I play pretty much all of the instruments on all of the records. Solo electronic artists have often been under pressure over the last twenty years to perform their records live. Is performing some thing that you do naturally or are you more comfortable in the studio? I like both. Right now I’m happy to be spending the next two months on a tour bus because it’s been a long time making this record and I sort of feel like now I want to get out and play it. It almost feels like a sort of reward for having spent so much time in the studio.
www.247magazine.co.uk
main body of that tune is just sort of processed abstract noise, and then just playing it and finding harmony and a baseline. I guess it’s the same way that you look at anything. You can see a sort of rough shape of something… everything has got a tune and a pitch and a rhythm so it’s sort of applying harmony. Are you quite visual with sound? You talk about seeing it as a shape? Yeah what’s that called when people do that? Synesthesia? When you start something, your mind is always in a certain place. And you have to sort of use that moment to get as much done as you can. So it is almost like a painter trying to capture particular light conditions or a mood or something like that?
for the sake of not being able to perform it or never let the live show inform how the studio production is going to sound. I like that epic-ness. But you can do that anyway. We played that Black Sands tune last night in Boston.
Bonobo’s new LP Black Sands is now available on Ninja Tune Records. If you want to check out Bonobo playing live in the South West, he plays at the Gloucester Guild Hall on 20 May, The Hippo in Plymouth on 21 May (www.hippolive. co.uk) and the Bristol O2 Academy on 22 May (www.o2academybristol. co.uk). Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, are you doing a lot of these interviews right now? “Yeah I have another four to do and we have artists here waiting to rehearse” Oh, who do you have? “there’s Delilah a new signing to Atlantic records, Mc Rage of course and blanked out oh wait, I shouldn’t have said that it’s a surprise” I’ll just write down here that Jay Z and Rihanna are on tour with you… “Yeah they are both on the tour bus” laughs I’ll put down Rihanna washes your socks for you.
Words by Plym ouths 14 th best Dj Aldo Vanucc i
You’re playing Rumble in the Jungle, how are the Southwest shows compared to he rest of the country or world? “Its a very, very long drive. I played a gig recently in Plymouth then the same night did Cornwall, that was hectic, my driver let me down so I had to get the train, great nights though. I’ve heard the Eden Project is great though, it’ll be the first time in a while of being on a line up of Djs as well” I heard another pair of producers have had to change their publishing from 50/50 to 75/25 as one of them just sits around in the studio smoking weed and talking shit, while the other one does all the work, how do you two divvy up the productions? “We are both very productive, it changes from track to track, we both have our own set ups and work on stuff together then when we come together we’ll finish off parts on each others tracks, but there’s never been a track that’s been solely made by one of us. Also there’s so much to be done with our business, we run a label etc there’s always something to do so we just get on with it.” You now work with A list artists, how much of a come down is it for you being interviewed by Plymouths 14th best Dj? “I haven’t heard of the other 13 though. To be honest it makes a change to be interviewed by someone who sounds quite normal..” I could get my missus for you, she would beg to differ “.. yeah so would my ex, thing is with the a list people, they are usually quite grounded and just like you and me, I think success can help with that.”
“I do like a nice donut, even like a Subway one, the sugary ones, they’re alright.”
There aren’t many producers in the world right now that can name drop collaborating with Snoop Dogg, Rihanna and Jay Z, there aren’t many live shows where you will feel the full power of drum n bass, dubstep and rock through to your very soul, and it’s such a shame that those kind of acts don’t frequent the southwest when they do their “nationwide” tours that never come further than Bristol. Hold on... CHASE AND STATUS. Boom! 16 |

When was the turning point in your career, when did you think ‘we’ve made it’ and did you buy gold spinning rims for your car? “I’m the original wasteman, I can’t drive, I’m a passenger. I don’t think we have made it, we’ve had some great achievements but we still have a long way to go, which, when you reach them you set yourself some more.” If I had to describe your ‘sound’ I would say it is banging and on point production with great melodies and hooks, but how would you describe what you do to my nan? “I’ve had to describe that to a few nans recently actually, I say
www.247magazine.co.uk
I’m a music producer and I’m in a band that plays music. If I say what I play it’ll be the guitar...” So when you labelled the Nneka mix ‘just bought a guitar mix’ that was you? ‘... yeah I always wanted a certain guitar when I was a kid, so when I’m on stage rocking out with my guitar that’s my dream come true” Your rise to super stardom has been very similar to Pendulum, how are you gonna avoid turning rubbish like they are now? “I’m not commenting on Pendulum. We have had a lot of in house discussions about this though, after making music for others it takes a bit of time to readjust to making music for yourselves. We still want to make cutting edge music and we want to stay true to ourselves. We’ve also never wanted to just do one style, our first track was quite a hard gnarly sound, then we did quite a liquid track and people were saying “oh I didn’t know you did liquid?”. We want to continue changing things up and keep it interesting” What’s better, producing in the studio, Djing, playing live or eating donuts? “Oh I do like a nice donut, even like a subways one, the sugary ones, they’re alright. Making music, touring or djing with records, it’s all what it’s all about, if we weren’t doing it then this would be what we dreamed about doing, you can’t be being somewhere and having the whole crowd sing one of your songs back to you unless you make the music!.” If Chase and Status were an ice cream, what flavour would it be? “Will would be something like a banoffee flavour and I’d be Vanilla with chocolate sauce, keep it simple you know” I hear you signed Nero, nice move, they’re wicked, who else is on your label? “16 bit and Redlight, he just released ‘Stupid’ on Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label which is wicked” With the Nneka remix, you turned an album track into an absolute anthem, how picky are you with remixes and what’s the worst you’ve turned down? “We do turn down a lot, it’s usually just about the track, when we did the Jay Z one we was at Roc Nation and they said would you do this and we just said yes, we are massive fans of the White Lies so we did the “death” one and with Nneka the vocal is just so amazing, it’s all about the quality of the track. My career could be described by three words “determination over ability”, what three words describe yours? “Just got started”
Thanks very much for your time and good luck with the tour. Chase and Status play Rumble in the Jungle at Eden Project, Cornwall on Fri 7 May, Bristol O2 Academy on Sat 8 May, the National Adventure Sports Show at The Royal Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet on 10 July and Boardmasters in Newquay on Fri 6 August.

In the third of our Press Pack Sessions, Joe Biddle of Press Pack Studios chats to Vince Lee, virtuoso blues guitarist and vocalist. To see a video of the interview, filmed and edited by Scot Weller of Fire and Ice Productions, go to www.247magazine.co.uk. When he was a teenager, Vince tried his hand at gardening and restoring classic cars, but soon quit to concentrate on playing music full time and hasn’t had a day job since, which has turned out pretty well. He learnt to play guitar by dissecting old blues records by the likes of T-Bone Walker, Freddie King and Hollywood Fats – he never had a teacher and doesn’t read music, and everything he plays is a result of listening and developing an ear for music. He’s a busy man, and is involved in lots of musical projects; Vince Lee & The Big Combo, The Wildcards, Thomas Ford & The Dirty Harmonys, his duo with vocalist Becca Langsford and a regular duo gig with bass player Al Wallis. We had a quick chat with Vince – but to get the full story, head to the website to check out the video. You’ve just done a European tour – tell us a bit about it… I spent three weeks traveling with my main touring band The Wildcards. We played shows in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, fourteen shows in all. The tour was arranged to promote The Wildcards brand new album ‘When The Moon Shines Bright’ which we released in February 2010. It is available now at www.rootscd.com. All the shows on tour were great, in particular The Jeppis Blues Festival in Finland was pretty cool. It was the last night of the tour and we shared the stage with our old friends Wentus Blues Band... We covered about 5000 miles in our Transit van and it got damn cold in Sweden and Finland, 27 below I think! What inspires you to make music? I think I am naturally inspired to make music; it’s the only thing that has been consistent in my life so far. I have used it as therapy in darker times and it got me through some really low points in my life. Over the last two years I have found a lot of inspiration working with younger musicians. I always felt there was a lack of blues talent in Plymouth; it has always been a struggle to find like-minded players to work with. I worried that the blues was becoming a dying art in my hometown so it has been a relief to find a younger generation of players keeping it alive here. I’ve had the pleasure of performing with some great musicians who really “get” what the blues is all about! Among others, Thomas Ford and Becca Langsford have opened the music up to a younger audience here. This can only be a good thing. I think the city has always had a strong music scene but I think the standard of musicianship is a lot higher these days. There are quite a few live music venues

in and around the Plymouth area and no shortage of good bands to see. I’d say it was healthier than ever. Where do you see your musical career heading over the next few years? I am at the final stages of mixing the mammoth task that is The Big Combo’s second album. I have been working on it for the last three years... The album features the regular three piece Combo with added Hammond organ from Paul ‘Bomber’ Harris, Becca Langsford and Becky Brine on backing vocals, George Comer on tenor and baritone saxes, Ian Petitt on trumpet and Patrick ‘James’ Pearson on strings. We have some great talent here in the South West so I look forward to spreading the word about it! How often do you play live gigs? I have a weekly residency at The Blues Bar and Grill on The Barbican every Tuesday night and I guess in an average week I do 4 to 5 shows. It never really gets tiresome. I get to meet some interesting people and I have performed all over Europe in places I would have never seen if I weren’t a musician. I enjoy taking my music to new places and seeing the reaction it gets. We have got some great festivals coming up this summer, which will keep me motivated and busy. I’m looking forward to summer gigs – after that European tour I think I’ve seen my share of snow this year!

RTTS 2010 is a proper festival, an anything goes festival, a festival that combines the unique beach life of Newquay with V-dubs, custom cars and dance music – you can have it full-on, hardcore, chilled, messy or civilian. It’s your choice and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Run To The Sun is the ultimate mix of motors, entertainment and big name DJs and live music – VW lovers have been making a pilgrimage down to Cornwall for this festival since 1987. One of the coolest parts of this festival is the cruise from London to Newquay. Kicking off at Reading services at 9am, by the time the cruise hits the South West there are hundreds of VWs following each other, which really enhances the sense of camaraderie at this festival – if you get the chance to see the cruise you’ll see some awesome VWs – and if you can take part in it, then that’s even better. See their website for more details on the stops that the cruise makes along the journey from Reading to Newquay. New for 2010, ravers will welcome the Morph Tent, which will play techno and minimal, a 12 hour dubstep marathon, turntablism and heavy drum ‘n’ bass, with awesome visual effects and a top DJ lineup (TBA). This year, the Silent Disco returns for the third time, and will be held on each of the three nights. The Shakin Shack sets up a more chilled vibe and will be home to RTTS’s acoustic sessions. And don’t miss the Show and Shine on Sunday 30 May at Tregunnel Car Park, where you can lust over all the shiny VWs that enthusiasts have brought along. Campervans are available to hire, as well as there being plenty of camping space.

S.P.Y
Frost Byte EP (Innerground) After the huge success of Marky & S.P.Y ‘Give Me Your Love EP’, the Innerground HQ keep the quality flowing as S.P.Y takes the hot seat to show you why he’s currently the most talked about Drum & Bass producers in the scene. S.P.Y gives us four absolute gems, whether it’s the cold ‘Frostbyte’ or the summer vibes on ‘Like A Dream’ this EP has it all. You may be familar with a few of these tracks if you checked out the recent ‘DJ Marky & Friends Presents: Makoto’ mix. A must have for any Drum & Bass fan! In:sight/Ollie Evans
The Jasmine Minks Poppy White EP (Oatcake Records)
History lesson: Jasmine Minks were one of the first bands on Alan McGee’s Creation Records, former home of Primal Scream, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine and Super Furry Animals. This EP was recorded in the early 90s, and it’s finally released in memory of former guitarist, Foosky (whom along with the band’s roadie, Mark, has since sadly passed away). Four strong songs with chiming guitars and harmonies aplenty, including my favourite, the ‘60s-driven Rain. This is a band with soul. Arash Torabi
Sparrow and The Workshop
Crystal Falls (Distiller Records) Glasgow-based, female-fronted trio deliver a quirky and energetic debut album, featuring re-recorded songs from last year’s two EPs plus new material. With male/female harmony vocals, crashing guitars and pounding drums, the band fuse elements of country, punk and folk, but they know how to use their influences without regurgitating or resorting to obvious clichés. At a time when the music industry is infested with tiresome ‘80s throwbacks, Sparrow and the Workshop are a breath of fresh air. Arash Torabi
Urban / Hip Hop
Dance / Electronica
Reggae / Dubstep
romantic vision is revealed with the electro-rock of True Love 1980, which opens the set. The charging Joys Kicks Darkness fires on all cylinders, and the emotional but enjoyable shenanigans continue with Arcadia. There’s no doubt about the fact that Ash can still deliver the goods: pop sensibilities with a kick-ass rock and roll edge. We like. A lot. Arash Torabi
Asaf Avidan & The Mojos
The Reckoning (Telmavar/Columbia Records) Debut album by Israeli five-piece with more than just a casual nod to Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin. They belt out their songs with energy and guts, which I’m sure would sound fantastic in a live set. But on a songwriting level, they rely WAY too much on the blues, resulting in bland and heard-it-all-before melodies. The only songs that show any imagination or creativity are the folk-tinged Maybe You Are and Devil’s Dance. They could make a decent album if they cut out the blues and the pointless howling, and concentrated on writing songs. Arash Torabi
Chima Anya
New Day (Phoenix Down Records) First impressions are always important, but with this release I got it so wrong, the name and artwork don’t say, “dope UK album with consistent production and nice flows throughout”, yet that is what it is. Chima Anya is making all the right moves: credible collabos, Radio 1 specialist support and warming up for both Jay Electronica and Brother Ali. His swag, as they say, is on. If you’re looking to discover some new thoughtful and tight hip hop, that happens to be from this side of the pond, then check this. Aldo Vanucci
Kate Nash
My Best Friend Is You (Fiction Records)
Nash is back, and I think this is one the fans will like. Songs like ‘Kiss That Grrrl’ tap directly into the intense female Ash paranoia (“She’s instantly more pretty A-Z Volume 1 and interesting than me”) that Nash is (Atomic Heart) unafraid to sing about, and that many will identify with, whether they admit it or not. The album is self conscious and open, Ash are on a singles-only release mission, with screamy shouty bits and swathes and this album is a compilation of the of intense love and angst, as well as a first 13 of their A-Z series, which began stream of consciousness bludgeoning the a couple of years ago. figures and slutty groupies (Mansion Song – its scary). Unfortunately, lines like “Thinking is the most stressful thing I’ve come across” and track “I Just Love You More” (which sees Nash sing the title for three minutes) make everything feel a bit superficial, it might be nice to see her go a bit deeper with her songs, not just sing about picking scabs off your knees. LTB
Jay Leighton
Polaroids And Stills (Belafonte Records)
I could envision one or two of these songs doing quite well if it had the airplay. Jay has a nice tone to his voice but for me it screams SAFE SAFE SAFE! Sombre vocals, acoustic guitar, clichéd lyrics and strings all over it. Song, arrangements, genre and production, there is nothing here you haven’t heard before I’m afraid. Joe Biddle
The Herbaliser
Herbal Tonic – Best Of (Ninja Tune) The original beat masters are back but is this rebadge of old works justifiable? Well in this instance I think yes. The compilation is well thought out and has some ripe pickings, both old and new, spanning two decades. If you’re new to these guys then this is as good a place as any to start. Think big beats ‘n’ basslines, funky horns and old school samples. Think I’ll keep this copy ;)… Joe Biddle
Nick Thayer Just Let It Go (Passenger)
For those that don’t know Nick’s previous work, he has been slowly building his rep since the last days of Big Beat, constantly putting out quality breaks and beats and generally causing a sensation with top notch productions. This album is quite varied in it’s influences and styles and is held together with tight, punchy club productions. Guest vocals from Sporty O and Wizard Sleeve, who you may have heard on the recent anthem “Riverside”. If you dig Krafty Kuts, Freestylers or the Plump Dj’s then this album is for you. You can catch him djing at the Southwest DnB awards at the Eden Project on 7th May. Aldo Vanucci
DEMO OF THE MONTH There is hope for British hip-hop, thanks to Fat of the Landfill, the 9-track CD by COUNTRAFLOW COLLECTIVE. This is mainly the talents of Exeter MC & producer, The Doozer, who is a regular fixture on the scene, and was once a member of fierce South West crew, The Cohorts. Seriously addictive beats with some creative use of samples, together with Doozer’s gutsy flow make this an essential listen. And he manages to remain ballsy without resorting to the yawn-inducing rhymes about poverty or being hard, which have infested the UK rap scene. The EP/mini-album also features contributions from some of the region’s most well-respected, namely DJ Loctite, First Aid and also Mantis, from legendary Bristol crew, Aspects. You can catch The Doozer & DJ Loctite at Exeter Amber Rooms on May 7th. www.myspace.com/countraflowcollective Like a lot of the music on this page, the word ‘demo’ is selling DJ GRAVITY’s 8 track EP short. Just a few bars into You’ve Been Cheating, and you’d be forgiven for assuming that he’s already a superstar. Call it grime or hip-hop, the high quality is maintained throughout every track here, showing Gravity’s talents as both MC and producer. And Bad Habit is easily the best dubstep tune I’ve heard this year. Since his move to the South West last year, Gravity’s name has been on many a flyer, both as host and DJ. Someone now needs to get his music out properly, to get him recognition on a larger scale. www.myspace.com/officialgravitydj
For Exeter-based indie-pop dreamer, SIMON BISH, it’s business as usual with a 4-track EP through his own Pop Noise imprint. The title song, Butterfly Girl is a perfect slice of summery pop, paving the way for his debut solo set, out soon. Simon’s regular band, Noise Annoys Simon and the rest of his label-mates are the South West’s most criminally underrated musicians. There’s a whole world of magnificent and highly-collectable material to get addicted to, so I strongly recommend you check out the works of Mr Bish and the rest of his gang right here: www.popnoiserecords.co.uk
Youthful energy, passion and pure powerpop: this roughly sums up Plymouth three-piece, THE ROYALS. They like their Mod imagery and they namecheck The Who, The Jam, The Small Faces and The Stone Roses. If you listen to great music, the chances are you’ll come up with the goods, and The Royals have. Their three-track EP consists of Bring Me Down, Screacher Creature and 50 First Kisses, all of which show the band’s ability to write imaginative songs that also capture different moods. Check out the songs right here, and go catch them live. www.myspace.com/theroyalspage
Beauty through imperfection is captured on Water Under the Bridge, the new solo set from ANDY B, another regular on Exeter’s Pop Noise scene. You would be forgiven for assuming that these ten lo-fi songs are lost treasures from the golden era of British indie-pop, or previously unreleased tracks from the vaults of labels such as Kaleidoscope or Dreamworld. If you like first-wave indie, the likes of Felt or The Pastels, then you’ll love this. Andy also plays in National Pastime and A Fine Day For Sailing. Go check:www.popnoiserecords.co.uk Plymouth’s female-fronted pop-punk trio, URBAN FOXES recently recorded four songs at the city’s newest studio, Jemstone Studios, engineered by James Wadge. The band is fronted by singer and guitarist, Beth, and what they’ve come up with is a fresh sound, despite citing one of their influences as local pub rockers, Mad Dog McRea. Urban Foxes have been together for less than a year, but the four songs on their “Undignified Dramatics” CD show a lot of potential, in terms of energy, songwriting and passion. www.myspace.com/ thepingpongpeople There are many factors that contribute to the unique and innovative sound created by HEG DOUGHTY. The South West songstress has a distinctly English style, which draws mainly from folk, although to be fair, you can’t really pin a label on her. Her songs are mainly driven by piano, over which Heg sings her storytelling lyrics with a powerful and passionate voice. Heg has the ability to explore melody, and on a creative level, what she does is very much her own. She has an EP out soon, but until then, check her out online. It would be great if she breaks through, because the South West needs to be associated with artists such as Heg Doughty. www.hegdoughty.com

Fontaine directs a well-dressed portrait of the designer’s journey from her humble beginnings as a provincial seamstress to the salons of Parisian haute couture. Meticulous period detail reveals how Coco forged a style that would revolutionise the way women dressed in the twentieth century. As the wheels fly off, and their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an emotionally engaging (and entirely plausible) farce. In a storm of razor-sharp verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, Four Lions is a comic tour de force. It shows that while terrorism is about ideology, it can also be about idiocy. Dir: Michael Patrick King, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Chris Noth. 2010/US/TBC All the girls are back for this sequel to the hit TV series. As per usual they’re finding new ways to spend money on fashion, complicate their love lives and partake in some steamy sensual play with the opposite sex. This sequel also sees the cast going more global with a desert trek on some camels providing a particularly amusing highlight. This film will I’m sure prove as popular as the girl’s previous outing and could easily spawn yet another sequel, not sure if the men in the audience will welcome this.
Dir: Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong 2010/US/148 min Following King Richard’s death, this tale follows an archer that returns from the crusades to become the infamous outlaw Robin Hood (Crowe). This realistic take on the legend will pit Hood against King John (Isaac) and his evil right-hand man the Sheriff of Nottingham. This film sees the reteaming of Gladiator duo director Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, so expect epic medieval battle scenes and not even a whiff of a Bryan Adams theme tune. Could be one of the big hits of the blockbuster season.

LIVE Ben Stone.
Exmouth The Digest takes a new turn this month, as I spent the whole time on the road with my hillbilly boys, Crazy Arm, supporting FRANK TURNER throughout the UK and mainland Europe. So more of a tour diary than a gig round-up. I hope you don’t mind. We kicked off the tour with a warm-up show in Huddersfield (Parish, 14 March) which, in hindsight, was a bad idea as I lost my voice. The next day, I spent the whole time drinking Throat Coat tea (miracle tea, I call it) as we drove to Newcastle for the first of 21 shows. Miraculously (toadaso) my voice found itself just in time to play the Northumbria University main hall. I think we nailed it. This constant battle to maintain my voice continued over the next three weeks: Throat Coat soothing from one corner, and cider/whiskey coshing my larynx from the other. I would, of course, have pushed the alcohol righteously to one side if it had not been for the selfless generosity of one man and his endless supply of Jamesons whiskey: CHUCK RAGAN. The legendary Hot Water Music protagonist was the main support to Frank Turner on the UK dates, but in our eyes (and that includes Frank and all the grizzled punks in the crowd each night) the man is a leading light, a true hero and a living embodiment of authenticity. Chuck also reigned supreme on the stage. Backed by DIGGER BARNES on double bass and JON GAUNT on fiddle – honest-to-goodness men with punk rock hearts – songs like ‘Glory’ and the heart-wrenching ‘Geraldine’ took on a whole new level of potency as the trio poured every ounce of sweat and soul into their acoustic brew. The fact that I was guesting on banjo and backing vocals by the first show; and that Simon was drumming by the third show; and that our friend Vicky Butterfield was co-singing ‘Geraldine’ by the fourth show (and making me weep for the first time in six years, dammit); and that all of Crazy Arm and crew were singing gang vocals by the sixth show comes as no surprise when you consider how all-embracing Chuck’s brand of folk music is designed to be. On our day off, we followed Chuck Ragan over to Swansea to see him play a show with the mighty three-pronged assault of BANGERS, THE ARTERIES and LIVERS & LUNGS. Although the vastness of the Frank shows was something to behold (3000 people in London Roundhouse? How the fuck did we get here?!) it was heartwarming to be part of a show where you could see the bloodshot whites of the fans’ eyes. And what’s more, Bangers played the show of their lives to an adoring crowd. So, we said our bleary-eyed goodbyes to Chuck, Jon and Digger, headed home for two days (during which I witnessed STRUNG OUT posit their tech-core wares upon a frivolous White Rabbit crowd) and set our sat-nav for Switzerland – an auspicious start to the Euro leg of the FT roadshow. Next stop, Germany. Awesome through and through. The shows in Wiesbaden, Hamburg and Bremen in particular were inspirational. We played in an ex-Nazi stronghold in Hamburg: a foreboding building that, if you were to destroy it, would require enough explosives to wipe out the whole city, according to folklore. We destroyed it that night. Sonically speaking, of course. Holland. Sweet. Eindhoven, Utrecht and Groningen were memorable shows not least because we stayed with some upstanding and unusual people every night. Frank Turner was in particularly good form in Groningen. Flanked by a band of competent musicians, he proved that the skinny English troubadour persona can carry over to other countries with ease, not least because you don’t need a degree in sociology to relate to his universal themes and sunny-side-up melodies. Songs like ‘Try This At Home’, ‘The Road’ and the poignant ‘Long Live The Queen’ betray Frank’s punk rock roots and make for one hell of a rousing singalong. He ended each night in Europe with ‘Photosynthesis’, during which we all got up, grabbed instruments and sang our little drunken hearts out. Onstage bonding sessions are all the rage, chez ‘Arm. More fun was had in Brussels, Lille (where I played a solo acoustic show because the venue – a barge – was too small for the band’s big sound) and an emotional grande finale in Paris (une ville merveilleuse!) before we headed home to the mellifluous sights and smells of Plymouth. Glad to be back? Only where my cat is concerned. The sooner we’re out on that tarmac again, stuffed into a van with no space to swing a soggy houmous sandwich or a pair of well-soiled boxers, the better. To the east, to the east… Auf wiedersehen, afscheid, adieu, and see-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
