THE EDGE BOOGIE FOR BRIZZLE You’ve gotta love Bristol Zoo – a small yet perfectly formed haven for tropical animals in the very residential back streets of Clifton. While it’s awesome to wander around the enclosures on a warm summer’s day, how great would it be to take a gander under starlit skies when let’s face it, most of the animals are at their busiest. Oh and what if you threw some mellow sounds into the mix? Well, this is exactly what Boogie for Brizzle is. A one-day festival in the zoo, with music from soul group Laid Blak and local favourites Phantom Limb, circus performers, break-dancers and cabaret. Tickets cost £13.50 (or £8.50 for kids) and can be bought online at www. bristolticketshop.co.uk T4 ON THE BEACH This pop-tastic day out at the beach shows there is more to Weston-super-Mare than the charred remains of a once-Grand Pier, buckets and spades and ice-creams. Not only does entertainment come from the hottest chart acts – including Plan B, Dizzee Rascal, JLS, Alexandra Burke and Pixie Lott but the celeb-spotting potential is endless with the T4 presenters and their pals getting involved along with the cast of Skins and design guru Gok Wan putting in an appearance too. Sadly, all tickets have now been allocated but you can catch the whole shebang on the box. GREEN MAN FESTIVAL A SELLOUT This will come as no surprise to anyone who has ever been to the Green Man Festival in the beautiful Brecon Beacons but it has already sold out this year. The intimate festival has attracted an ever-growing following of music fans keen to avoid the corporate sponsorship, crap beer and overrated bands which feature at most of the larger festivals. With bands such as The Flaming Lips, Doves and Beiruit joining the likes of Mumford and Sons, Joanna Newson and Laura Marling its no wonder everyone wants in on the act. CHEMICAL RECORDS CELEBRATES 10TH BIRTHDAY 2010 marks Chemical Records 10th year as a music, fashion and streetwear store. As part of the celebrations they’ve teamed up with skate brand DC Shoes to create the DC X Chemical T Shirt, exclusive to chemicaluk.com. The design of the DC x Chemical T shirt reflects the company’s rich history and features a records sleeve print DC logo. It will be unveiled at a launch party at Start the Bus in Bristol on 17 July, which will feature legendary drum and bass DJ dBridge West London producer Data, lo-fi hip hop producer Blue Daisy and Fantastic Mr Fox who has been championed by Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs.

Tributes To Welsh Drummer

Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable was found dead at his home in Aberdare last month. Cable, who was with the Stereophonics from their invention in 1992 to 2003, was known for his mad hair and wicked sense of humour. The 40-year-old reportedly died after a drinking binge. He was laid to rest in a ceremony in his hometown, which was attended by former bandmate Kelly Jones, actor Rhys Ifans and comedian Rob Brydon. His coffin had a rock’n’roll lightening strike on the front and his send off featured the music of AC/DC. After leaving the Phozzas, Cable forged a successful career as a TV and radio presenter and drummer with Welsh rock band Killing For Company.

Tickets To Sanctuary Outdoor

Back in the ‘90s the rave circuit was buzzing, then we stormed into the noughties and it seemed to die out. Now, thanks to those Slammin Vinyl guys we’ve clawed it back with Sanctuary Outdoor on August Bank Holiday weekend. The threeday (and night) festival, which takes place on the Catton Hall Estate in the Midlands, features 17 arenas, hosting 150 artists, including Scratch Perverts, Grooverider, Scott Brown and Lisa Pin-Up. What’s more we’ve bagged a pair of tickets (worth £65 each) to giveaway. For details of how to enter visit www.247magazine.co.uk

Manic Street Preachers Tour

Tickets To Standon Calling What started as a low-key birthday party has turned into one of the staples of the small festival scene – Standon Calling. Organisers have secured the likes of British Sea Power, Jeffrey Lewis, The Magic Numbers and Silver Columns for the festival, which takes place in Hertfordshire on 6-8 August. Being one of the smaller festivals, it comes with a much smaller price tag – just £95 a ticket or £40 for a Sunday day ticket. We’ve managed to secure a pair of tickets for one lucky reader. To enter please visit www.247magazine.co.uk

Those Welsh heroes the Manic Street Preachers have announced a full UK tour to coincide with the release of their 10th studio album, Postcards From A Young Man. The tour will see them play the Newport Centre, near their hometown of Blackwood, on 23 October and Bristol Colston Hall on 25 October. Support comes from the Brighton-group British Sea Power. The Manics aren’t the only old indie band to announce an autumn tour, The Charlatans will play Bristol Academy on 19 October.

Tickets To Stop Making Sense Festival

If you’ve been weighing up your options this summer – a festival or a beach holiday – we may just have the answer. Stop Making Sense, which takes place on 3 -5 September, brings London, Glasgow and Paris’ hottest club and concert promoters to a paradise location. More than a music festival, SMS is situated on a woody peninsula in the village of Petrçane on the stunning Adriatic coast of Croatia. DJ’S appearing at the festival includes Juan Atkins, Theo Parrish and Friendly Fires alongside some of the biggest club promoters. To be in with a chance of winning tickets (worth £80 each) please visit www.247magazine.co.uk

Dissident Club Says Goodbye

After almost a decade of activity, Bristol’s Dissident club night is literally calling it a night. The last ever Dissident will take place at the infamous Black Swan on 9 July as organisers go their separate ways. “Over the last decade the Dissident name has meant many things, a collective, a club night, a label and, perhaps most importantly, a custom built and highly tuned sound system designed specifically for the bass heavy, breaks driven sound we’re known for,” said organiser Nick Kimber. “We’ve taken our sound to venues, warehouses and fields across the UK and the teknivals in Europe but the one place we’ve always returned and had the most fun is the Black Swan in Bristol.”

Head down to Bristol harbourside in the Summer months and there’s always something going on but not on the scale of the Harbour Festival. For three days (30 July – 1 August) the mile-long harbour’s edge is taken over by music, dance and circus acts. Queen’s Square will host a delicious food market and a music stage programmed by the Colston Hall. Cascade Steps will feature mellow acoustic acts and Millennium Square will become a Dance Village for the weekend hosting performances from the New York Ballet among others. If it’s clowning around and acrobatics you’re after then Castle Park is for you and if skating/Parkour and bikes are your bag then you may want to head down to the Mud Dock. The iconic historic boats which line the harbourside will form the backdrop for the final epic fireworks display.

Tickets To See Tiesto In London The legendary DJ Tiesto is looking forward to playing a one-day festival in London this summer with band of the moment Pendulum. It’s the Ibiza favourite’s only UK date of the year and follows on from last year’s epic event. Tickets cost £39 but we’ve secured a pair of tickets for one lucky reader. Visit www.247magazine.co.uk for more details.

Millennium Stadium 10-Year Celebrations

It was one of the rare Millennium projects which actually opened on time, and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium has been making the most of its 10 year celebrations with concerts, exhibitions and events. But the piece de resistance came exactly 11 years to the day the stadium opened with a gig by ex-Beatle Paul McCartney. Support came from the Manic Street Preachers who were the first live act to play the stadium at Manic Millennium on December 31, 1999.

THE EDGE BATH SUMMER CIDER FESTIVAL Cider has to be the drink of the moment. As the secret spreads beyond the Westcountry, cider makers are coming up with more exotic flavours to entice new folk to the cider revolution. But once again, this region is leading the way with a Bath Summer Cider Festival featuring more than 80 different ciders and perrys (which, believe it or not, are so versatile they can be made into pear cider, Lambrini or Babycham). Local cider makers Thatchersm Bristol Port and Black Dragon will all be represented. The festival, which takes place in Bath Pavilion on 23 and 24 July, will feature live music form Wurzels tribute the Mangledwurzels and food in the form of hot pork rolls with stuffing and apple sauce. Tickets £7.50. SIGNED ANDY BELL ALBUM He’s one of the mainstays of the electo-pop scene and now former Erasure singer Andy Bell has released a new solo album – Non-Stop. 247 Magazine has teamed up with his record label to give readers a chance to win a signed copy of the album, with three runners up prizes of a bog-standard (as in unsigned) copy. The 10-track album will appeal to connoisseurs of deluxe dancepop, seductive electro anthems and gold-plated disco grooves. Non-Stop was co-produced and co-written by Andy Bell and Pascal Gabriel. This second solo album for Bell provides a liberating platform for his more clubby, nocturnal, disco-glam side. To enter the competition please visit www.247magazine. co.uk 2000 TREES FESTIVAL This sell out festival is a personal favourite of headline act Frank Turner and this year looks to be a much better fare than the sopping wet festival last year. Combining new exciting new acts such as Sparrow and the Workshop, Bombay Bicycle Club and Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit and local favourites, Crazy Arm, Emily Breeze and Men Diamler the Gloucestershire festival could well prove a force to be reckoned with. If you’re the kind of person who feels completely overwhelmed by 80,000 muddy, stinky people trudging for hours between stages in a massive site like Glastonbury then this may be the one for you. MESSY WEEKENDER 2 Clubbers are being enticed from the South West and Wales up to deepest darkest Yorkshire for the Messy Weekender 2. After an amazing first year, the event will round off the festival season taking place in Whitby on 11 – 13 September. Friday night’s entertainment is being held at the Spa Pavilion complex, which overlooks the sea, with multi arenas hosting over 40 DJs and a snow machine, bubble machine, multiple smoke and fog machines, live visualizations and UV lights. Saturday daytime activities include, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing, treasure hunts and beck scrambling. That evening is a massive boat party and expect some mean after parties with open decks. Full weekend tickets cost £99 and are available from www. hardertimez.co.uk magazine | 5

We’re well and truly in the midst of festival season now, the first few got off to a sunny start so let’s hope it continues for the July batch. There’s a good wave of local events and the odd festival worth trekking halfway across the country for…

For the past few years Frank Turner has been on the road constantly, we caught up with him last year as he prepared for his fourth gig in Bristol and this month we managed to grab another quick chat as he enjoyed a rare afternoon at his home near Winchester. “I’ve been doing gigs, gigs and more gigs, I never do anything else. But then I choose to do them.” However trying it may be for the man himself, Turner’s relentless touring seems to be paying off as his fan base continues to grow and grow. It’s good to see he’s not letting it go to his head as he prepares to pound the UK festival scene with his unmistakable angsty folk. Fresh out of a set at the World famous Glastonbury Festival, the 28-year-old has a couple of weeks grace before returning to the Larmer Tree festival on the Wiltshire/Dorset border and his personal favourite, 2000 Trees Festival in Gloucestershire, which he had to sack off last year in favour of a last minute arena tour of the States with American rockers the Offspring. “That was an agonising decision to make,” he said. “I’ve been to 2000 Trees every year and I really wanted to play it again last year but my manager said we couldn’t really let an opportunity like that go. In America, it takes a lot of effort to turn it around but things seem to be going in the right direction. “The year before, I played three sets at 2000 trees – two on the stage and one in the campsite late at night. I guess I want to tell people that I’ll definitely make it up to them this year.” Not only that but Turner helped the organisers select the line-up on the day he’s playing so there’s a whole heap of bands he is looking forward to watching. “There’s a lot of bands I like on there, The Taylors, The Dawn Chorus, Beans on Toast etc. I know the organisers from previous years and they were good enough to let me help them pick the line-up. “So yeah, I’ll be wondering about chatting to people. If you see me, come and say hi. It’s such a good festival.” When we caught up with Frank, he had just returned from some gigs in Israel and was off to Bonaroo festival in Tennessee. Earlier this year he played at Coachella near Los Angeles but how do they differ from British festivals? “It was pretty fucking cool,” he said. “It’s clean and tidy, they’ve got fake turf and plants all over the floor and litter pickers running round. “I like festivals to be a bit chaotic www.247magazine.co.uk

and dirty. “Most of the crowd were very Stepford Wives, luckily the ugly ones came to see me. I don’t make music for supermodels, well, not exclusively for supermodels.” He added: “I’m doing about a million festivals this year, Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, Latitude, Larmer Tree, 2000 Trees, which is my first proper headline slot. My band will also be with me for the last two. “Usually at festivals, the actual show is quite short, you get about 45 minutes on stage which is great but in the run up there’s lots of hanging about by a portable cabin and no-one really knows what’s going on. It can be pretty tedious.” On the plus side, all this hanging around and travelling is giving the master singer songwriter time to pen some new tunes, which he hopes to take into the studio the beginning of next year for a Summer 2011 album launch. It will be his third solo album since his former group Million Dead broke up. His debut album Sleep Is For The Week proved that Frank had the talent to succeed on his own and the follow up album, Love Ire and Deed, took this to the next level with anthems such as Photosynthesis blaring out from student halls across the region.Last year he released and of course toured with his most current and arguably his best offering, Poetry of the Deed. This saw him play solo gigs at the 02 Academy in Bristol with Crazy Arm, whose members include some of the 247 writers, and an intimate set at Rise Music in Bristol. It would appear that there really is no rest for the wicked.

Catch Frank Turner at Bath Komedia on 14 July, Larmer Tree Festival on the Wiltshire/Dorset border on 15 July or 2000 Trees Festival in Gloucestershire on 16 July. He’s also playing at Latitude in Suffolk on 17 July, London Roundhouse on 19 July and Leeds and Reading Festivals on 27 and 28 August respectively. magazine | 9

RETAIL THERAPY Oh I do like to be beside the seaside... essential (and some less so) items for life at sea. Uncle Albert T-Shirt

Pull-in anchor socks

£7.50

www.pull-in.com Granted in the hot weather you are probably more likely to opt for bear feet or flip flops than some footwear which involves wearing socks but when the sun goes down your toes might feel the chill a little; and that’s where these cute little sailor socks come in.

Recylced Boat

£14.99

www.sharedearth.co.uk You may feel too old for kids toys but this recycled model boat has an adult feel to it. the globe. A whopping 120 litres It was the urban art event of the year, attracting artists from across awesome end result; scores of the is this and later cans spray 1250 than more and n emulsio of white caught up with one of the organisers, mesmerising works of art adorning previously dull brick walls. We Steve Hayles... How do you feel Upfest went this year? Upfest was crazy, good crazy though, totally exceeded all our expectations and the artwork created looks sweet as. It seems each year the artists just keep on raising the bar. Artists this year were asked to collaborate with mash-up’s so over half the artists were working together in crews or pairs creating proper big and mixed up work. One of the not so obvious successes of the festival has been the start of collaborations between various stencil artists. Freehand guys have been collaborating since day dot, but to get stencilist mashing it up with other stencilists and freehanders was a great success to build on for next year. On top of all the amazing artwork, our supported charity, NACOA (National Association for Children of Alcoholics) spent a lot of time raising the profile of the work they do and will have raised over £3000 towards funding their confidential phone line for kids that are affected by alcoholism within the family. The artwork has been up for a few weeks now, what sort of response is it getting from people? Part of the philosophy of Upfest has been to keep the festival open to artists with varying levels of experience and each year even the newest guys and girls are really stepping up to the challenge and stress of painting in front of thousands of visitors, the comments we have had through emails and our Facebook fan page definitely agree that we have stumbled across the right approach. How many artists were involved and how far did they come for the event? Just over 200 artist were at the festival, about 70 from Bristol and 45 from outside the UK, including six from the US and Canada, one from Tokyo and the rest representing 8 European countries. Distance wise Upfest’11 should beat this as we’ve already had an enquiry from a pair of artists from Australia. The organisers of Upfest actually find it very humbling that all these from far and wide make their way to Bristol under their own steam, respect to them all.

Bristol seems to have quite a thriving street art scene, why do you think that is? Bristol has for a long time had a thriving music and art scene and since the 80’s the intrinsic link between the two cultures has driven both to succeed. Bristol has become the true home of Street Art in the UK over the last 20 years and has developed to one of the major hot spots around the globe alongside the likes of NYC, Berlin and Melbourne. So why has this happened in Bristol and not elsewhere in the UK? Firstly, Bristol has a great mix of cultures bringing inspirational ideas from across the globe. There is also a massive amount of talent from Bristol artists that have been spraying for many years, which attracted even more artists to move to, or at least visit, the city. Ultimately talent breeds talent which is probably the biggest factor as to why the whole Bristol art scene is so buoyant. The last and maybe the most important thing is that the majority of Bristolians have embraced Street Art and genuinely understand the skill that these artists have. How long will these pieces stay up for? About 50 per cent of the work unfortunately had to come down at the end of the weekend, the remaining work should now be up all year until Upfest’11 What else are the Upfest crew up to this summer? Well, our current activity includes a trip to Nass Festival in Somerset with about ten guys painting over the weekend, followed by a Gallery Show on the Isle of Wight and then on to Boardmasters Festival down in Newquay. In amongst all this we have an Urban View show at the View Art Gallery in Hotwells until the 16 July and at Upfest HQ which is the Wilder Gallery in St Pauls, Bristol we have an ongoing exhibition, if you can’t get down before, please pop in and say hi when we guess most of your readers will be in the area for the St Paul’s Carnival...

The Magic Numbers The Runaway:

(Heavenly Recordings) Album number three finds The Magic Numbers in a mainly thoughtful and reflective mood. Maybe their choice of opening the album with the strings-laden and guitar-free The Pulse is an indication of their move away from the powerpop days of their debut. The downtempo theme is kept with Hurt So Good, but then it starts to lift with the chilled-out late night funk of Why Did You Call. The band is clearly not in the business of churning out tried-and-tested material. Their agenda is creating complex songs that use the full potential of the four members, with brilliant harmonies and great productions all the way.

The Bluetones A New Athens

(CIA Recordings) Since their album chart-topping days of the mid‘90s, The Bluetones have maintained a similar sound, with a warm vocal style, great guitar work and a strong rhythm section. The Notes Between The Notes is a summery psychedelic number that suggests a band with fresh ideas to bring to the table. Had it not been for the fickle press, The Bluetones may well have retained their position as one of the country’s top-selling artists, but to be carrying on despite that, means that they must be in it for the music alone. A New Athens is an enjoyable listen.

The Coral

Butterfly House

(Deltasonic Records) While the Scouse accent may not be the best twang in the world there is something warm and comforting about hearing it shine through in songs. Think John Power from Cast, The Zutons and of course The Coral. And while Butterfly House doesn’t contain another ‘Dreaming of You’, it has a much more quiet and considered approach to timeless indie ballads. There’s a much less rocky and much more folky vibe with songs such as Walking in the Winter and Green is the Colour – think Mumford and Sons meets The Las.

The Keys Fire Inside

(See Monkey Do Monkey Recordings) Back in the 90s, Wales produced a powerhouse of awesome bands – the Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals and Stereophonics. Among these were some lesser known entities including John Peel favourties Murry the Hump. And out of their ashes we have The Keys. You’d be forgiven for thinking these guys come from the North with an air of Spiritualized, Kasabian or New Order. With songs such as ‘Chemistry’ harking back to

Feeder

Renegades

(Big Teeth Music) There can be few fates worse for bands than to stage comebacks that are barely noticed, limping along without really having a chance of recapturing their glory days. It must be worse then for bands like Feeder, even in their pomp they were surely nobody’s favourite band; vapid angst-by-numbers married to predictable fm grunge. Well little has changed, although mercifully they have just about dispensed with the stadium balladry in favour of a tame attempt at revisiting their rockier roots. The sixth-form essays mirror the unimaginative riffs and melodies, there is just no sense of there being any need for this record at all.

The Boxer (Wichita)

Although The Boxer is being talked up as a radical change in direction for Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke, it has been apparent for a while now that he has felt constricted by the indie furrow that his band originally ploughed. The Boxer suffers from a simple lack of good songs. With a few exceptions (All The Things I Can Never Say, New Rules) the overall feeling is of somebody trying far too hard to imitate his influences, without having anything original to bring himself. There’s also the problem of Kele’s vocals, he still sounds like a whiney Grange Hill extra complaining at the tuckshop.

the UK, strikes again with this female-fronted band, who drop a debut that’s bursting with pure pop sensibilities. Theirs is a bright and upbeat sound that takes in the odd bit of country, polished with chiming guitars and rounded off with sweetly sung, heartbreaking vocals. A bit like Camera Obscura, minus the doom & gloom. A delightful album overall, that only suffers from a tendency to go slightly over the top with the sweetness. But guys: please oh PLEASE change that bloody awful name!

Against Me! White Crosses (Sire)

There was a time when Springsteen was frowned upon by the punk community as an MOR nonentity. Who’da thought that the seal of Bruce would become one of the biggest accolades afforded to any upstanding, modern punk rock band? Which might explain why ‘White Crosses’ is toned down and knee-deep in Bossisms. Like The Gaslight Anthem before them, Against Me! are consciously losing themselves to the Bruce-print. As long as it produces great results like ‘Suffocation’ I’m down with that.

Backbone

Murder By Death Good Morning Magpie (Vagrant)

Rooted in old time country and a haunting strand of Americana, Adam Turla has turned whisky drinking and melancholy into a gothic wet dream. Johnny Cash may still be Turla’s vocal puppet-master but the Man In Black would surely marvel at MBD’s far-reaching rootsiness and structural ingenuity. From ‘Foxglove’’s mellifluous display of cello-led romance and restraint to the simmering cauldron of surf twang and ill intent of ‘White Noise’, this is an album that relishes the opportunity to piss on your parade and make mincemeat of genre fads.

Backbone Nina Nastasia is one serious lady, and the Steve Albini-recorded Outlaster is a far cry from her more accessible work, such as 2006’s pop-orientated folk of On Leaving. She’s leaving no stone unturned here, with full-on orchestral arrangements, deep lyrics and intricate instrumentations. Nastasia creates contrast by balancing soothing pieces (Cry, Cry Baby and You Can Take Your Time) with unsettling and disturbing songs (What’s Out There). As an album, Outlaster is no fluffy folk affair. It is the work of an artist with depth, setting the standards that others are bound to follow.

A Cold Bright Day

(Enemy Soul Records) Now and then an album sneaks up on you and becomes a new favourite, I’ve never heard of these and despite the producer working with Jedi Mind Tricks, I know nothing else about them, so a nice surprise it was that they’ve delivered a beautiful sad and thoughtful album, in part Portishead, in part almost Jewel, but on the whole amazing. Given a massive push this could appeal to the Dido / Jem market, which I’m sure would upset some but for me isn’t a bad thing, quality music should be heard by the masses.

DEMOS DEMO OF THE MONTH A lot of (mainly white) people make a parody of the blues by not investing enough of their soul in it and by tarnishing it with crappy pub rock mores. Not our Simon Langsford, aka old-time aficionado and Plymouth resident, THOMAS FORD. With help from his band, The Dirty Harmonys (Vince Lee, Becca Langsford, ‘Junior’ Pearson), and other choice musos, this solo venture revels in the underbelly of the genre, crudely recorded, fast-tracked, full of unchiselled character and all the better for it. ‘Good Men Dead Blues’ is a prime example of Ford’s mastery: tearing at the blues like the low-down, unfaithful lover that it is, with a Tom Waits air of worldly desolation. Elsewhere, delta slide, raging harmonica and elements of American jazz contribute to an album immersed in, and totally in awe of, black music history. Neato. www.myspace.com/ thomasfordsolo London bands. Self-serving fuckers the lot of ‘em. Thank goodness for new wave odd-balls, THE DISSOCIATES, and their intelligent, misfit rock’n’roll revue. Their six song demo, ‘Waiting For The Backlash’, manages to incorporate the jagged sounds of late ‘70s Britain (think Adam & The Ants, Dexys Midnight Runners) with the tune-centric post-punk of Stateside bands such as Tanner and Bluetip to arrive at something truly original. ‘Under Heavy Manners’ is the real clincher here, riding a succulent staccato guitar motif into a Dischord Records-friendly refrain; ‘Welcome To London’ proffers cynically unfashionable punk bluster, while ‘Follow Me Down’ is a romantic ode to some kind of revolution. My new favourite band. Yours too if you’re lucky. www.myspace.com/thedissociates Bristol’s END OF THE LINE dish out live hip/triphop that can’t fail to draw comparisons with Massive Attack, Portishead et al due to the moody, electronic passages, understated rapping and female crooning on display. But with a sultry soul vocalist like Gizella on board they also betray a fondness for Sade’s smooth ‘80s aromatics, especially on the evocative ‘Maybe’. The often-skeletal arrangements could benefit with more layered low-end frequencies but James Farrell and co are certainly on the right track with the brooding likes of ‘Feelin’ The Pressure’. Essentially, however, it begs the question: does anyone still listen to this kind of downbeat, digi-mood music? Isn’t it all about irony and Crystal Castles these days? www.myspace.com/ bukkamusic Post-rock tubthumper and Elliot Whale Boy mainstay, STEVE STRONG, branches out further into the realms of sonic self-discovery with a solo demo EP, ‘Safety In Numbers’. It’s a deceptively dreamy, chiefly instrumental set of post-rock soundscapes that, for the most part, centres around cyclical melancholic guitar motifs with shuffling drum patterns that dodge and dive throughout the musical passages like a kid with ADHD. Sometimes it works perfectly (the awesome ‘One Hand One Knee One Foot At A Time’); other times you feel like you’re being prodded with little sticks (the frenetic title track, which is nothing if not ambitious). As with all Steve Strong’s projects, you feel that the journey is half the fun. www.myspace.com/stavrossewb

Cornishmen of classic pop splendour, GREGOR AND THE MARTIANS, are clearly not down with 21st century confrontation. Their demo album, ‘High Performance Art’, is as dulcet, mellifluous and retrogressive as it gets without making a daisy chain in 1965 and tying it around your cat’s neck. ‘Care For The Weak’ is a twinkly, summery ditty with a laudable sentiment, while the lilting title track goes to town on their evident David Bowie

fixation. The janglesome quartet hit paydirt on ‘Different Things’ and ‘Keanu Reeves’: two very well crafted songs that sound like they escaped the ‘60s and hitched a ride with Brett Anderson to the Creation Records offices. Refreshingly serene and nostalgically nuanced. www.myspace.com/gregorandthemartians If Kings Of Leon were called DUMBER THAN THE AVERAGE BEAR would we have taken them to our hearts so readily? Perhaps, but under protest. Sonically, alas, this budding Exeter quartet don’t fair much better. Angling for that Southern swagger, they simply don’t have the goods or the imagination to cut a convincing figure. Relying on over-simplified, over-stretched musical phrases, the likes of ‘Inspired By Johnny Cash’ take an age to reach their destination, while Carl Eaton’s raspy Nashville drawl falls quite short of authentic. ‘Megatron’ holds more promise with its Led Zep-like build-up but the song falls by the wayside just when they should have truly let it rip. DTTAB are a decent enough pub band but it’s hard to imagine them outgrowing that niche.

www.myspace.com/dumberthantheaveragebear

More sensitive men who can’t seem to handle modern society, BLOOMING CELLAR take us on a shoegazing trip down memory lane that manages to evoke Ride, The Lemonheads and Teenage Fanclub, with an array of faintly country-fied, lo-fidelity pop vignettes. Their recently submitted demo album, ‘Narset Bleeds’, is actually years old (13 we believe) but they’re on a revival tip so who are we to stand in the way? Thing is, I’m not sure how well received they were first time round (their Myspace page doesn’t do them any favours) so I’m suspecting that they aren’t going to create many ripples in a cynical, jaded, attention-span challenged 2010. Good luck with all that, anyhow, chaps.

www.myspace.com/bloomingcellar

The problem with polished, preened, perfect multimedia packages aimed squarely for the heart (ie. wallet) of the music industry is that they often veil an inherent lack of talent. Not so, KAT MARSH’s ‘Hunted’. Encased in a snazzy photo-booklet, the audio/visual feast contained within certainly matches first impressions. The mini-album proffers a sensual rush of fragmentary beats and analogue/synth pop flourishes with Plymouth homegirl, Kat’s soul-saturated voice snaking itself suggestively around the spicy, sonic flavours on offer. The title track, in particular, shimmers with sultry attitude, like Skin playfighting with Prince. The visual aspect is served with a handful of songs filmed live in a local photo studio – the all-female assemblage doing their level best not to outshine each other, with a few of them looking a little too camera-conscious as they gently funk out to Kat’s confident oeuvre. Still, a sassy, classy effort. www.myspace.com/katmarsh We want your new music to review. When Melody’s repressed parents arrive on the scene, however, they are transformed by the free spirits of New York and their transformation affects them all. A funny film with a fine cast (Patricia Clarkson is wonderful as Melody’s mother) about how happiness can be found in the most unlikely of scenarios.

Since it started up in Nottingham, Dot to Dot Festival has really taken off and Bristol is fortunate enough to host its very own multi-venue festival every year. Inspired by the US urban festivals, Dot to Dot has gained a deserved reputation for showcasing the next big thing. This year music fans were treated to sets from Los Campesinos, Wild Beasts, Mystery Jets, Idles, Silver Columns and Dan Sartain and more in venues across the city, including the Thekla, the Academy and The Louisiana.
