I don’t know about you but I freakin’ love the Autumn; everything about it from the cosy dark nights, the warm winter wardrobe and all things mulled. It is also the season of all the cool festivals, from Halloween to Bonfire Night and the local wassailing sessions (keep your eyes open for more on this in future issues). This month, we’ve gone all out with the spooky theme – focusing our fashion and retail pages on glam goth and day of the dead kitsch. We’re also back in full swing with the live music scene as bands embark upon Autumn tours. Saying that, the festival season is stretching way beyond August nowadays and we’ve got some pics from the incredible End of the Road festival on our Snapped page as well as some cool competitions for a couple of the hottest (not literally) Winter festivals! After the success of I Need Air and Perfect Stranger, dubstep super group Magnetic Man have just released their debut self titled album which was recorded in Cornwall and as they prepare to return to the region for a some live shows, Lekan Latinwo caught up with Benga for a chat. How did you, Skream and Artwork come up with the name Magnetic Man? The name was originally used as a disguise, we wanted the people to focus on the music and like it because it’s good quality music, and not focus on the fact that it’s me, Skream and Artwork who made it.

Tell us about the gigs you’ve played in Bristol and the South West… I remember playing at The Black Swan pub in Easton, Bristol about four years ago, that was good, Bristol Academy, and I mustn’t forget Glastonbury and Big Chill Festivals, I like to do crowd surfing with an audience of 10,000 people, you just got to do it. Why do you think Dubstep has got so big recently, especially in Bristol, where we’ve got the likes of Joker and Jakes?

Apparently, you recorded the Magnetic Man album in Cornwall, how true is that?

Dubstep has been around for years, I got involved with it when it wasn’t even called Dubstep. I think it needed time to develop and evolve to where it is now, and with what the Bristol guys have done is that they’ve seen what’s been done with Dubstep and have added their own slant to it, so their Dubstep sounds help the genre grow, and influence the next generation - which is all good.

It’s true, we recorded half of the album in Cornwall and the other half in London

As Bristol and the South West have such a rich musical history, what artists would you like to work with from the region?

Why did you choose Cornwall to do some of the recording?

Two of my major musical influences from the South West are Roni Size and DJ Die, I love “Brown Paper Bag” and “Dirty Beats”, those tracks are like anthems to me.

Well, Skream, Artwork and myself we got real busy and hectic schedules, so to get all three of us in one place at one time can be a bit of a mission. Fortunately, we have friends outside of music who said: “Why not come to Cornwall to record, so you don’t get distracted from the task you’ve got to do?”. So we did. Besides Cornwall is a beautiful place to chill out and get away from all the day-to-day runnings and stress that you associate with London. Tell us about the crazy antics at your show at this year’s Benicassim Festival in Spain, where the stage got rushed by hundreds of fans… We all had a hand in that one, we had a four hour set, and I think Skream must have said to the crowd come up onstage as a joke and before you know it, the stage was rammed with people; plus I did some streaking at Benicassim too, as part of a crazy bet, as you do. The promoter has banned us from performing at next year’s festival, but I do hope they change their mind, we promise we’ll be on our best behaviour. Seeing that you like doing crazy bets, and crazy things in general. Would you ever completely shave off your afro? Well it depends what I would be doing it for? I’m also known as the Afro Warrior, what would I call myself if I cut off my afro?

www.247magazine.co.uk

Who else would you like to work with? Not a lot of people know this but I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan, you can call him pop (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) you can call him weird, but the way I see it, good music is good music and he made it consistently for nearly four decades and influenced so many other artists, he is the ultimate pop star. If he was still alive I would love to make a track with him. A few months ago your record label Sony bought Michael Jackson’s back catalogue and unreleased songs for £160million or thereabouts. So could there be a possibility of Sony asking you to do a remix for Michael Jackson? You never know! Skream and Benga play The Stannary, Falmouth, Cornwall on 15 October (after Skream plays a solo gig at Exeter Lemon Grove). Both play at Plymouth University on 19 October. Magnetic Man play the Trinity Centre, Bristol on 28 October. Tickets from wwwseetickets.com and for the Plymouth show from Box Surf and Bigga Records in Plymouth.

This past year has seen an influx of young British female singers (think Ellie Goulding/Pixie Lott/LaRoux) but while the majority have divided opinion there is one who has broken through to shine out above the mediocre and that woman is Eliza Doolittle. It’s been a rapid rise to fame for Ms Doolittle (not her real surname) who released her debut album just a few months ago. Her hit single Pack Up is one of the biggest and most catchy songs of the summer and she is about to embark upon her first ever headline tour. We caught up with her as she squeezed in a brief tour of Europe. “Since the album came out in June it has got much busier. I’ve been having so much fun,” she said. “I played Bestival and took the rest of the weekend off so I could enjoy it. I was on at 12.50pm and all my friends had gone out the night before so I was worried there would be no-one there but lots of people turned out so I was really happy about it. I don’t really know how my music got out there - it just happened. Myspace is something I’ve always had but it’s dying a bit, today it’s more about Facebook and Twitter – you can listen to music on Facebook now.” Raised by a piano-playing dad and singing mum, Eliza, 22, has been writing songs since she was 12. “Mr Mysterious” was one of the first – I was listening to Destiny’s Child, and I thought I had to write about a boy. It actually put me off writing about boys forever,” she laughs. “I used to have singing parties where I used to sing my favourite songs – like Mariah Carey. It was my favourite sort of music when I was growing up, then I opened my mind to other music. From the classics like Carole King and Stevie Wonder to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Arctic Monkeys.” 8|

magazine

Fortunately, Eliza isn’t as high maintenance as some of her early heroes are reputed to be. Talking about performing, she said: “You pick up something, you just play it, busker vibe, whether it’s a glockenspiel or ukulele. I love tiny instruments. I like the look and the sound of them. On ‘Rollerblades’ the drums are actually a child’s drum-kit.” Rollerblades is the new single, a follow up to Pack Up, which played on the chorus of the George Henry Powell marching song ‘Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag’. “In a lot of my songs, I try and make melodies audible, unusual but still interesting. I want to write songs people can sing along to. I can think of nothing more exciting than travelling the world and playing to audiences and having them sing your words along with you. When I first played live I would shake with fear, and my voice would tremble. But I’d do it for the love of it. I have had some training over the past few years, to keep my muscles trained – after all your voice is a muscle which needs working just like anything else.” Eliza was set to spend the Autumn touring with fellow Londoner Paloma Faith but after the success of Pack Up and the album she decided to fit in a headline tour to visit the places she wasn’t heading to with Paloma, “We thought let’s just do a quick tour,” she said. “People deserve to see a live show. I’m so excited, it’s one of my favourite parts of my job. It’s important to be able to act your role. As much as the songs have come from me, they come from a certain time in my life. I don’t feel all of those feelings in one night – it’s not possible – but you’ve got to be able to relate back to those feelings.” There’s nothing I love more than playing live. Eliza Doolittle plays a sold out gig at Bristol Thekla on October 16. She returns to the South West to support Paloma Faith at Plymouth Pavilions on November 4. Tickets priced £17.50 from www.seetickets.com www.247magazine.co.uk

DAN LE SAC VS SCROOBIUS PIP

After a good run on the summer festival circuit, including a storming set at Beach Break in South Wales the genredefying Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip are back in the region as part of a full UK tour. Ben Perks caught up with them to talk music and life. Preaching wisdom for the modern era and backed by enough offbeat electro bass to break your spine, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip have never been successfully pigeon-holed into a certain genre. The duo recently released their second album The Logic Of Chance earlier this year, which is a testament to their progression in the world of spoken word, trip hop tomfoolery. Watch these guys live and it’s obvious that this band possesses enough energetic conviction to smother the likes of Mr Motivator in his sleep (if he does sleep that is). So how did Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip form? We met through Myspace and we both liked each other’s work, I went to one of Dan’s gigs and he remixed some of my music and I became interested. We had a chat after and there you have it, a match made in Reading! Your first single of Thou Shalt Always Kill made quite a stir in the music industry in 2007, grabbing the attention of Hip Hop Legend Pos from De La Soul, what was it like to work with him? We were asked by our label to re-launch Thou Shalt Always Kill, and we weren’t that into it. We produced the track on a small scale and we wanted to keep it that way, so we didn’t ruin the feeling of it. This all changed when Pos asked us we couldn’t turn down an offer from him. It was an amazing experience and extremely unbelievable only a few years ago. You have very varied musical influences; from post-punk phenomenon Joy Division to US Hip Hop, can you explain why you both have such an accommodating palette? I think this is why people find it hard to put us in a musical genre. We love all sorts of music and I don’t think either of us would want to box ourselves in by only liking one type of music, in turn we can draw inspiration from many different places be it music it or not.

www.247magazine.co.uk

What would you say is your biggest non-musical influence then? We draw a lot of inspiration from films, from blockbuster to Art house cinema. Film really can be so emotive and I disagree with people who label all blockbusters in the idiot box. The whole experience of going to the cinema is so enjoyable; I don’t think people appreciate it enough. If you’re going to write an action and adventure blockbuster off without even seeing it you’re an idiot. You performed at Beach Break for the third time this summer, what keeps attracting you to the festival? We’ve played at beach break twice previously and it now feels like one of our own gigs. The atmosphere is fantastic because the students have finished their studies and everyone’s letting off steam - we always get a good reception. You seem to be on the road quite a bit, what has been your best gig so far? Fuji Rocks has got to be one of the best gigs yet, it was just so surreal. We both finally realised how crazy everything was – from making shitty songs in our bedrooms to playing to crowds of people at the bottom of Mount Fuji. It just drummed it in that we are actually doing something we loved to like-minded individuals on the other side of the world. It sounds a bit clichéd but it’s true. What would you be doing if Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip hadn’t happened? We’d probably still be working in record shops like HMV. If I weren’t doing this I would love to own a record shop – that was always the dream. One day, it could still happen… Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip play Bristol O2 Academy on October 17 and Cardiff Souls on October 19. Tickets from www.seetickets.com

In love with Autumn; Ryan Adams&Tom Waits butternut squash&mulled cider.

Music is the answer!

KT Tunstall

The Like

(Virgin/Relentless)

(Geffen)

Tiger Suit

She came in to the game fairly late on in her career (after years of busking) hitting the jackpot with Eye to the Telescope in 2004 and now the effortlessly cool, husky toned Tunstall is back with another energetic indie anthem. With tones of Texas, the band not the place, this will inevitably prove favourable radio fodder. Without wanting to advocate faux American accents, the Dolly Parton twang adopted by the Scottish lass in ‘Glamour Puss’ is pretty endearing making for a catchy rock song. But it’s the acoustic tracks where Tunstall really shines, the forthcoming single (Still A) Wierdo, where the seasoned singer/songwriter/ guitarist does what she knows best but with a youthful freshness akin to that of Laura Marling and co.

Babyhead

Heavy Weather (Rockers Revolt)

Released on bedfellows Pama International’s label and recorded in Portishead’s State of Art studio Bristol’s favourite festival band Babyhead return with a banging summer record (truly awesome, if not a little ill-timed). The subtle trumpet, the dark brooding vocals and the controlled musical mayhem make for the perfect dub/ska combo. Try as you might, you will struggle not to sway like a motherfucker, grinning from ear to ear while the party spirit fills the air. Bristol claims this genre with bands like Babyhead and Smerin’s Anti Social Club flying the flag. And in Still Babyhead, the urban hip hop influences shine through while the wholly convincing reggae finds it’s natural home in The Rise of the Idiots. Go Bristol!

Mayday Parade

Release Me Since 2005’s Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking the Like have lost a member, gained two more and have had something of a mod makeover. They have also drafted in Mark Ronson on production duties, no doubt hoping that some of his golden touch rubs off on them. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t; Release Me is full of immediate, sassy dancefloor fillers. The power pop of their debut has been traded in for a 60’s girl group sound and though they’re hardly reinventing the wheel, it’s worked. Release Me should go down a storm when their Bristol gig is rescheduled.

Deerhunter

Halcyon Digest (4AD)

Hot on the heels of last years Atlas Sound record comes the new effort from Bradford Cox’s other project and admirers will be relieved to know that his frantic workrate has not dulled his creativity. Halcyon Digest sees Cox embrace a gentler, lusher sound than previous Deerhunter albums whilst remaining agreeably scruffy around the edges. The central theme here is nostalgia with first single Revival sounding like a warped 50’s prom dance, Memory Boy’s classic pop and final track he Would Have Laughed providing a touching tribute to the late Jay Reatard. A must hear for indie fans and a shoo-in for the album of the year lists.

Badly Drawn Boy

It’s What I’m Thinking (Part One: Photographing Snowflakes)

(Twisted Nerve) Anywhere But Here The first part in a trilogy of albums conceived (Fearless) during a burst of creativity, Photographing Snowflakes is Damon Gough’s first proper According to some Mayday Parade fans, the album since 2006’s lacklustre Born In The UK. departure of former guitarist and vocalist Jason Lancaster means this album is their worst yet. The Sound of Meat

Still best known in this country for his work soundtracking Amelie, Yann Tiersen has enjoyed a 15 year career studded with impressive If you hate it when musicians take themselves too seriously, pouting like fish through their side swept collaborations (Elizabeth Fraser, Jane Birkin) fringes and writing songs about their tortured souls and considerable European success. Anybody coming to this expecting accordion-driven then you may just love these Bristol guys. They take the comical lyrics of the Divine Comedy/Monty whimsy will be disappointed; Dust Lane is Python/Spinal Tap, add some 60s Britpop melodies an expansive, contemplative record chiefly and 70s psychadelica and come out the other side concerned with mortality. This is often stirring stuff, despite the subject matter, with Tiersen sounding like a kind of witty Boo Radleys - the perfect soundtrack to an indie kid acid trip. Magnetic Man Magnetic Man

**** This self titled debut album brings dubstep to a wider audience. Parts touch on the garage side of dubstep and a far more hectic side. ‘K Dance’ does exactly what is says on the tin, whilst ‘Ping Pong’ catches a smooth bouncy flow building throughout. Guest vocals include Ms Dynamite, John Legend & Angela Hunter. A couple of tracks seem overly experimental but grow on you & some are more dubstep pop. If you’re looking for a more underground sound, ‘Karma Crazy’ or ‘Mad’ may be more up your street. There’s a good mix of light & dark sounds throughout - not just one for dubstep heads.

Blame

The Music Blame has risen through the D&B rankings in recent years with on point production & clear musical talent, breaking him apart from others. Here, he has collaborated with some great acts to broaden his scope. Ruff Sqwad (Tinchy Strider & Fuda Guy), Dynamite MC, Rodney P and DRS bring a lyrical flavour while Jocelyn Brown, Jenna G, Selah, Alex Miles, Camilla, JT Fitz and Tom Sears add vocals to rolling uplifting beats that’d keep any dancefloor alive. This one is full of energy & diversity. For a debut album, it has really hit the spot. He has remixed for some massive mainstream artists and there is a lot more to be seen from Blame.

Artificial Intelligence Stand Alone

(Twisted Nerve)

A.I. have always stayed true to their sound bringing an atmospheric, edgy feel without going too dark. This is only the second album released on Bryan G’s V Recordings after Roni Size’s and it’s a big one. Glenn and Gambit (A.I) have been in demand to remix some high ranking commercial labels in the past few years (‘Trick Me’ by Kelis & ‘Slammin’ by Eric Prydz). Collaborations on this album include dBridge, Marky & Krust with vocal input from Steo, Jenna G and DRS. ‘Stand Alone’ takes you through a D&B journey while still keeping a signature sound throughout. If quality production of D&B is what you are after, this is what you will get.

The Jolly Boys

Great Expectations ‘The Birth Of Modern Mento’

(Wall of Sound) These guys have an amazing career spanning over 60 years. Arguably the most recognisable mento band in the world. This album hears them cover classics from Amy Winehouse, The Clash and New Order. They kick off with their take on Iggy Pop’s ‘Passenger’ then follow on to Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’. It leaves you intrigued, wanting to hear how they cover the other classics like The Strtanglers’ ‘Golden Brown’ and Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’. Great as a party CD to get people talking. It’s nice and easy listening with an interesting twist on each tune. One worth having in the collection for the right moment. It can be appreciated by all ages so check it out.

Well hello readers what can I say about this past month? It has been a bit monumental for me, as not only was it my 28th Birthday but it was also my sister’s wedding on exactly the same day and I was very proud of my sister because the wedding was all really nicely done and not at all tacky like those horrendous gloss dross weddings. I was made master of ceremonies for the occasion, which meant I had to be ultra suited and booted and actually I for once thought I looked quite good! Then it was back into festival mode with Shambala and Offset - two festivals which cater for two completely different groups of people. Shambala had the family feel and approach of pretty much ‘everything goes’ with most of the people spending time in fancy dress and just swilling around not really caring what was going on. Being at Shambala also gave me a chance to finally say hello to Kate Tempest, some of you may or may not know that I have been raving on about Kate Tempest’s beat poetry/rapping and I have had quite a few chances to say hello to her but have generally wimped out because of being too shy. If you do not know what she does then check out her band The Sound of Rum. I must admit to being a bit of a performance poet myself and so I decided to throw myself into the Poetry Slam event and did much better then could have been expected, you see I have never entered into a poetry slam event before and I have a terrible memory for what I have written, so I quite often have to improvise. I somehow managed to finish off joint runner up and score nine points more than all of the other competitors just by improvising (54/60 in total). It was also great seeing Bristol bands like Zun Zun Egui and the Big Naturals play in the middle of a field. Though it did cause my brain to wreck havoc with hallucinations, as much as I love both bands there is something in their sound which triggers off deranged visions in my head. Offset on the other hand was full of self-conscious South East London scenesters who seemed pretty much consumed by their own image - thinking how supposedly ‘out there’ they were and thinking that by stuffing flowers in their hair they could look pretty and twee. (see www.247magazine.co.uk for the Hackney Hipster Hate story to give you a better idea). Thank goodness for some of the more ‘in your face’ bands, such as fierce political battle cries of German Digital hardcore band Atari Teenage Riot who pretty much destroyed the PA system on the closing night and those friendly hairy bug-eyed Israeli loons Monotonix who provided some real highlights with their usual ‘let’s play in the audience wearing nothing but our underpants’ high jinks. During the week in between the festivals, I managed to fit in a disabled dance project in Salisbury and got filmed for a project called Box which was done by an Australian arts group called Back to Back. I also got interviewed for a short documentary for Film Four about live music fans. It was kind of weird being sat in my kitchen whilst having a camera probed into my face as I rattled off countless stories of situations I managed to get myself in because of the musical sounds going off! There are many things I am looking forward to this month, like my own hip hop group Non Compus Mentus are supporting Dels at Start The Bus, who themselves are supporting MR Doom on tour. Other music highlights include Islet, Againts Me and Fucked Up, Chrome Hoof, Carny Ville, No Age, Black Angels, KRS1, Melt Banana, Warpaint and Yann Tiersen amongst many others!!!

Rounding off the summer festival season in the Westcountry was the aptly named End of the Road festival (EOTR). And talk about saving the best til last. With some quality Americana acts treating thousands of bearded music lovers to heartwrenching roots and blues (think Felice Brothers, Iron and Wine and Deer Tick), some top notch soundscape pioneers fuelling the party spirit (think Errors, Drum Eyes and Monotonix) and those friendly folk at the Somerset Cider Bus keeping the hot and spicy juice flowing all weekend – how could you not love EOTR?
