Words: Rob Sleigh

Kansas-based solo artist and acoustic guitar maestro Andy McKee has been releasing instrumental folk music for the past ten years and his distinctive finger-tapping playing style has even made him into a recent YouTube sensation. In the run-up to Andy’s return to the South West with his latest album ‘Joyland’, we caught up with him for a chat… “I usually say modern, instrumental, acoustic guitar music. It’s a pretty accurate description, but it’s not the most concise phrase for a genre. It’s kind of a mouthful.” Andy McKee’s music may not be the easiest to describe, but judging by the response to his videos, a lot of people seem to be able to relate to the songs. A few years ago, Andy became somewhat of an internet phenomenon when the record label he was with, Candyrat Records, put a number of his songs up on video-sharing website YouTube. “It absolutely changed my life being so successful on YouTube. I don’t think there was any other way I could have reached so many people so quickly. It brought my music to people all over the world.” “That was about four years ago and YouTube was still quite new, really. We shot about eight or nine videos in one afternoon and, somehow, people found it and latched onto it. It suddenly got all these views.” One track in particular entitled ‘Drifting’ has since received over 35,000,000 views. “When the videos started to take off, I suddenly got a lot of opportunities to go and play. One of the first places that I went was England.” Andy started learning to play when he was given his first guitar at the age of thirteen. He had first taken an interest in the instrument after hearing the songs of guitarist Eric Johnson. “I’d never really listened to much instrumental music before, but I thought that his stuff was really cool. I had this connection with music without any lyrics.” After an early interest in hard rock bands such as Metallica and Iron Maiden, he soon became inspired to learn the acoustic guitar after hearing music by people like Michael Hedges 8|

and Preston Reed. “Guys that were doing their own ideas and techniques on the guitar. I would listen to their CDs and try to learn their music. Eventually, I started to write some of my own stuff as well.”

“When it’s just you up there playing and you’re writing the music too, you can share some of yourself with the people that are listening.” During his teenage years, Andy began playing the guitar in local bands, but he soon discovered that his true calling was as a solo artist. “What drew me to the acoustic guitar was the idea of trying to cover all the aspects of music with just one instrument. There’s something kind of personal about it too. When it’s just you up there playing and you’re writing the music too, you can share some of yourself with the people that are listening in a different way to if you’re in a band.” Despite his huge accomplishments over the last ten years, Andy has learned not to forget how he started out. “I don’t ever feel like I want to give up anything musically or compromise to make a buck. I just want to try and be as honest as I can and play the music that comes from my heart and share that with people.” See Andy McKee at Exeter Phoenix on Fri 11 February. www.247magazine.co.uk

After a six-year break, the Hollywood horror-punkers are back with brand new album ‘Women and Children Last’ and now they’re heading to the South West with their God Save the Scream Tour. Frontman Wednesday 13 recently told 247’s Rob Sleigh all about the new album and the return of Murderdolls. Last August, Hollywood metallers Murderdolls finally re-emerged from the shadows to make a big comeback with their long-awaited second album. Founding members Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison – better known as the drummer from Slipknot – decided that, despite the long break, it was time to team up with some new accomplices and make the album of their lives. “The first album was really tongue-in-cheek and camp with horror movie songs. Whereas this time, we still have some of the campiness, but it’s more of a serious and darker tone.” Their latest offering has already been described as a major improvement on their 2002 debut ‘Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls’ and now, the band are gearing up to bring the album over to the UK. Murderdolls first joined forces back in 2001, when Wednesday 13 was still with his previous band Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13. “I came home and checked my answering machine. Joey had left a message saying: ‘Hey, this is Joey Jordison from Slipknot. I’ve been trying to track you down. I’m a big fan of your band. I’m putting a project together and I was wondering if you would be interested.’ It looked like a great opportunity.” Once the duo had come up with some tracks, a collection of music that they had each written in the past, it didn’t take long for them to think of a band name. “Joey had a notebook of Slipknot logos that he had drawn. I was flipping through some pages and I saw the word ‘Murderdolls’. It sounded like a combination of the New York Dolls and GG Allin’s band the Murder Junkies. We were huge fans of both of those bands and our music was pretty much a really violent, glam sort of band at the beginning anyway, so it was the perfect name.” 10 |

magazine

Unfortunately, after the release of their first album, it wasn’t long before the group were to go on hiatus. “We started working on other projects and we never had the time to make it work. The first incarnation of Murderdolls was a runaway train about to crash any minute… And it did.” After that, Joey returned to Slipknot and Wednesday 13 began work on his own solo band. However, after several years of writing all his own songs, he began to remember what it was that he enjoyed most about being part of Murderdolls. “That’s what I missed the most - having a songwriting partner to bounce ideas off. Usually it’s just me being my own critic and tearing myself apart, pretty much [Laughs].” In early 2010, Wednesday 13 and Joey finally decided to get back together with some new band members and start afresh with the album ‘Women and Children Last’. “We decided to put together a different line-up and get some new blood behind us. The whole idea of the band is a lot more focused. It’s still a runaway train, but a bit more controlled.”

Murderdolls are: Wednesday 13: Vocals Joey Jordison: Rhythm guitar Roman Surman: Lead guitar Jack Tankersley: Bass Racci Hart: Drums See Murderdolls at Exeter Lemon Grove on February 14.

The Go! Team have been away for a while but are now back, and on top form too. Rolling Blackouts is the third album from the six-piece; here Ian Parton - the man and the mind behind the band – tells Frances Allan why their music is like a patchwork quilt. So how are you feeling about the release of the new album? It’s been a while coming but I dig it, I think it it’s an evolution, without it being too different. It’s still recognised as The Go! Team but it is quite different. You are about to go on tour too, are you excited about that? I always look forward to touring. I just love jumping around, we all do really - that’s kind of why we are in the band. We are not the slickest band in the world, we miss cues all over the place and mess things up occasionally, but we put energy above perfection. Do you think that is part of the charm for The Go! Team fans that come to see you live? I guess it has become that way, I think that kind of love of imperfection filters through everything we do, from the video productions to the stage show, and the artwork.

“We miss cues all over the place and mess things up occasionally, but we put energy above perfection.” Talking about the album now, when you listen to the songs, they evoke a lot of imagery and visuals in your mind’s eye. Is that something that you aimed for? I like the idea that music turns life into a film, you put your Walkman on and you’re walking down the street and things change somehow, things become more of whatever they are, things become more emotional, more exciting, more dynamic – I like the idea of music transforming everyday life into something else. Some of the tracks on the album, you can see them being used in films. Is that something that you would be interested in exploring? www.247magazine.co.uk

Yeah, I ain’t no genius though. I couldn’t just knock out a film score, I don’t think. I have always had this love of marching bands, everything from the sound, the marching drum sound, even the outfits; I think they are really cool. We actually did use a real massive community band for this record. People often think we just use samples for everything, but often it’s not, it’s real. What differentiates you from other bands - is it that you are willing to put the time in, experiment, and get something out of it that you are really proud of? The way we write the songs and the whole process, and the fact that we mix samples with real stuff - that you don’t know what’s what – it’s quite ‘patchworky’. It’s the patchwork quality of making music, I suppose. The artwork for the album ties in with the sound of the album, is that something that is important to you? It does look like a patchwork quilt doesn’t it? I like that there is something a bit cultish about it, there are a lot of things going on with the stone circles. It’s a very Go! Team album cover. Have you started thinking about your next album, do you let yourself think that far ahead yet? There is potential talk of this being the last album, but we will have to see. People have to kind of get normal jobs at some point or you find yourself middle-aged and in a band. The Go! Team will play at The Anson Rooms in Bristol on 11th Feb and at The Princess Pavillions in Falmouth on the 13th Feb. Get there album now.

Words: Arash Torbai

Garage punk is alive and well in Plymouth, thanks to kick-ass trio, The Damerels. The band are about to release their debut EP on glorious double vinyl, care of local label, Onec Records. After being blown away by seeing them live we caught up with singer Allister Gall… First things first: how the hell do you get along without a bass-guitarist? We like stripped-down rock & roll. When me & Tom started five or six years ago, we didn’t have anybody else in the band, so we wanted to make as big a noise as possible, with just vocals and guitar. When we found a drummer, we also tried out various bass-players, but we felt that it made us sound like quite a lot of other bands. Having just guitar & drums gives us more of a dynamic sound, and it also makes us think about how to make a song sound good, without a bass. Sometimes by limitation, you can find more interesting things, and that’s kind of the mentality of the band. Does your name come from the Plymouth school? Me and Tom are also ex-pupils of Stoke Damerel, but the name mainly comes from Lord Damerel, who was a bit of rake (someone who doesn’t abide by the rules and goes his own way). It’s an old wives tale: apparently he had everything and he pissed it all up the wall, so it fitted.

Long live the vinyl? Yes, it suits us. We’re kind of retro, and we like to think we’re quite contemporary as well: we like to straddle both of those ideas. The record will be packaged in a pizza box, and it’ll also come with a download code. Having it on vinyl makes it more idiosyncratic. Onec is a label of love, and they don’t seem too interested in making loads of money; just putting out music by bands that they love. We’re really excited about it. Any plans of branching out of the South West, when the record comes out? Definitely. We’ll do a short UK tour, and some of the places we’ll play will be Southampton, London and Brighton. We’ll work it all out at a later date- these are all venues that Ben knows. We’ll also do a European tour in the summer.

Your debut single is out next month. Have you had any demos out before this? We did a demo about three years ago, which was supposed to come out on a Worcester label called Fury 76. It was our first recording and things didn’t go quite as well as we’d hoped. A lot of that was down to us for being a bit naïve, so we sat on that for a bit and used it to get gigs. But we weren’t happy for it to be released. Tell us more about your forthcoming double vinyl EP We’ve recorded four songs for Onec Records, based in Plymouth. We were very lucky because Pete who runs the label with his wife, came to a few of our shows a couple of months ago. He loved it and got in touch. We also combined with PMC (Plymouth Music Collective studio), UPR Records and Doc, who engineered it, as well as Ben’s brother, Jim Turner. 12 |

DJ of the yea r

Littlesouth.com’s search for a South West DJ of the year was hotter than ever this year with a massive 19,000 unique votes. Rachael D’Cruze catches up with Olly G, from the winning DJ group: Freerange, who consistently put Cornwall and the wider South West music scene on the map. Littlesouth’s DJ of the year 2010 – quite a feat considering the epic size of the competition and high level of Dj’s in Cornwall. How are you feeling? We’re really happy to have won this award this year, like you say there are some really talented Dj’s in the area so to voted as the best of 2010 means a lot to us. We’re lucky to have such a great following in Cornwall. Tell us about Freerange – how did you guys meet and what are you all about? When it started four years ago the Freerange brand was started to promote a group of seven Dj’s covering Drum & Bass, Breakbeat, Techno, Electro, Hip Hop and Dubstep. Musically myself, Ave and Seb have always jelled together really well, so as the original concept of having seven people together filtered out, it was a natural for us to up our game as a trio. We focused solely on the Breakbeat scene for a few years and with a few of our own records released, we began getting a lot of national exposure and high profile bookings within the breaks scene. Now we are fairly well established on a worldwide scale, so we are beginning to introduce a lot of our original influences back into our music. The Techno records we have been making have been doing so well that we have started another alias called The Occult.

Who produces your stuff – do you keep it local? The Freerange package is about as South West as it gets! Ave is the real hero behind our sound and 90% of the music is made by him in his home studio. We also have another more basic studio where we broadcast our radio shows and make our podcasts. STREET

ART

SPACEHOP You’re not originally from Exeter, how did you end up here? I was born and bred in the South Wales Valleys. I traveled about a bit and ended up in Exeter, doing a Degree in Photography.

How accepting do you feel Exeter is to street art? The council here don’t really have a problem with legal street art, we have quite a few spots where it’s okay to paint and on the whole the scene is pretty lively, I’ve recently been in touch with the council and have been given permission to paint some portraits on a bridge in Marsh Barton, which I’ll be starting very soon so watch this space… hop!

How did you first get into the whole street art scene? I’ve been into Hip Hop and Graffiti since the 1980’s so I followed the same path as loads of others…Breakdance, Beat Street, Subway Art etc. I’ve always drawn and started sketching pieces at school but didn’t pick up a can until about seven years ago when I met Gone Your producing portraits now, how did that come about? and Mesh from the El3 crew, they taught me everything I know!! Like I say I’ve always sketched and I’ve drawn loads of portraits in the past, I got a bit bored of painting just for the photograph and What is you style and whose it influenced by? wanted something I could keep or better still, sell, so I decided to With my “Graffiti” stuff…Ha ha! My style is Biological Flump…I don’t start doing canvases, after seeing the stuff Trans 1 was producing I know what it means but it’s what I think when I look at my work, I thought I’m gonna give that a go but I wanted to be a bit different so don’t really have any influences, the original idea for my letter forms instead of a wall I tried doing it on canvas. came from a character I drew a few years back. With my portraits, I’m heavily influenced by black and white photography but I’m also Where can people see more on your work and get in touch luvin’ the work of artists like The Mac, Belin and Trans 1. with you? I sell painted hats, skate-decks, clocks and spray-cans at a cool What have been your high points / claims to fame in the shop called No Guts No Glory www.ngngdesign.com and my Street Art world? portraits are on display and for sale at “Ink”, a Tattoo studio in Exeter Painting a portrait of Howard Marks at the Paighton Lighthouse jam and there’s loads more at www.flickr.com/spacehop was one, as the response it got was amazing. As a crew (EL3) we painted at Black Rock in Brighton last summer, which has always Contact Spacehop at spacehop2004@yahoo.co.uk been a bit of an ambition for me and I think we held it down, the wall lasted the whole summer so we were pretty chuffed! “My love is a prick on a Tudor rose.” (Blackadder)

Love Changes Everything – Michael Ball

Gay For Johnny Depp

What Doesn’t Kill You Eventually Kills You (Shinebox) Convoluted song titles with naughty conceits, raging post-punk and notions of controversy can only mean one thing: a new Gay Johnny For Depp record. If you quietly ignore that the Brooklyn mob owe their whole shtick to trailblazers like Nomeansno and ‘80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, the likes of ‘Suckcess’ and ‘Nine Inch Males’ temper intelligence and belligerence to great effect. The thing is, one can’t help but feel this nagging suspicion that contrivance is part of the gameplan too. Not that it matters. These are ridiculously short songs designed to work on a visceral level that doesn’t care for the wherefores and whys. I suggest that you just go with the torrential flow.

Esben and the Witch Violet Cries (Matador)

Leading lights in the new wave of dark pop, Brighton trio, Esben & The Witch, do away with the necessity for locked drum patterns with guitars and replace them with ethereal, nocturnal emissions the likes of which Siouxsie Sioux and Swans would no doubt be proud. Whether vocalist, Rachel Davies, is brooding in the cellar (‘Argyria’) or walking on Cocteau-esque clouds (‘Marine Fields Close’) the haunting essence is enough to strip you of your cynicism and bathe you in balmy reverberated reflection. All the while, digital interference and distant synths do a fine job of condensing the last four decades of electronica into a decidedly modern whole. Refreshingly morose.

Mogwai

Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (Rock Action) It’s a wonderfully antagonistic album title for an album that revels in its thoroughly eardrum-friendly aura. Indeed, Mogwai have done it again: forged another record of virtually voiceless soundscapery that succeeds in transporting the listener to an altogether more idyllic if occasionally troublesome place. ‘White Noise’ is as euphoric as the Glaswegians get – all spacious keyboard hooks and pleasant drone, neatly complemented by the Stereolab-style motorik of ‘Mexican Grand Prix’ and ‘Rano Pano’’s exquisite guitar-led chimes. From thereon in it only gets better. They may have made a couple errors of judgement in the past but Mogwai don’t know how to make an uninteresting record. ‘Hardcore…’ rams that point home with bells on.

Frankie & the Heartstrings Hunger

(Polydor) Have you been missing all those white-socked indie fops and their jangly gentlemen’s rock’n’roll? Well, fret no more. Sunderland’s F&TH come with a suitcase of pop-savvy guitar ditties that will have you shaking your asymmetrical fringe with studied abandon (ie. not much abandon). On first listen, ‘Hunger’ appears little more than the modern musings of well-dressed men who happen to enjoy a bit of ‘60s soul pop in their non-ironic spare time. That is until ‘Fragile’ enters the fray – an emotional gem of a song that could have been a Motown hit if they were bouffanted divas and it was 1962. Ones for the promising pile.

Gruff Rhys

Hotel Shampoo

(Turnstile/Ovni Records)

Super Furry Animals’ lead singer and guitarist on a solo tip, with an album that has more in common with SFA than his previous solo album, Candylion, or his Neon Neon project. This is a mainly organic sounding, melody-driven set which dips into psychedelic dreaminess, best displayed on Shark Hidden Waters (the single). Gruff’s trademarks are all here: harmony vocals, clever use of rhythm and melody and playful wordplay. The mood and feel constantly change, from the piano riff and horn blast of Sensations in the Dark, the strings-led Vitamin K, the melancholy of Take a Sentence and the quirky timing of Christopher Columbus. And as always, Gruff’s songwriting is first class. NO SFA fan will be disappointed.

Various Artists

3…2…1… A Rocket Girl Compilation (Rocket Girl) For over a decade, Rocket Girl has been gaining a solid reputation as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking independent labels, and this lavishly-packaged 2-disc set shows its eclectic roster. Previous input by cult bands such as Mogwai, Add N to X and the collaboration between the legendary Patti Smith & Kevin Shields, are sadly not included here. A Place to Bury Strangers’ I Know I’ll See You is a perfect mimic of early Jesus & Mary Chain, so the inclusion of the band’s identical cover version of JAMC’s Just Out Of Reach is pointless. But there are plenty of highlights, including Television Personalities’ She’s My Yoko (my favourite song from last year) and two instrumentals from the God of ambient psychedelia, Robin Gutherie. Plus further selections that include space-rock and electronica.

The Crave

Breaking The Silence (The Crave)

The Crave romanticise about a time when there was apparently “no indie… no post-this, post that”. They reckon music is “an escape from reality”, but instead they deliver brainless rock fodder with laughable lyrics, best used as soundtrack for spoof rock movies, or comedy sketches that take the piss out of rock bands. Or if you like, Busted (remember them?) without the songs. What this lot should be “craving” is access to decent music for inspiration, coupled with someone who knows how to write SONGS. Until then, they should keep the “silence” and not “break” it. Bloody awful.

Sparrow and the Workshop Black to Red (Distiller)

An EP of new material from the Glasgow-based, female-fronted trio Sparrow and the Workshop who released their brilliant debut album, Crystals Fall last year. After a year of gigs and festival appearances they are back with this offering. Their sound is raw, fusing elements of country, rock & roll and folk, but it’s definitely theirs. The waltz-time title track charges along, all chiming guitars and call-response/harmony vocals. The drummer is a one-man power-station, and the singer possesses the kind of beauty that needs no stylist, with a voice that will sooth one minute, and knock the bollocks off an elephant the next.

Jessie J

Who You Are (Island)

Jessie J is a groundbreaking artist about to create a massive impact this year. As a singer and songwriter she shows great versatility in this album sampler. The debut single ‘Do it like a Dude’ has already hit radio playlists as well as being remixed by the man in the spotlight right now, Labrinth. The second tune ‘Price Tag’ featuring B.o.B is a big singalong tune that will be stuck in your head and will have you humming along at the most awkward of times! ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ and ‘Who You Are’ delve a bit deeper showing a different, more serious side that impresses even further. ‘Mama Knows Best’ hits a side of Jessie exposing yet another level of energy and mood that she can put her hand to.

The Streets

Computers and the Blues (Atlantic)

The Streets return in their usual unique style for the last time apparently. The first track is hip-hop/rock cross and is actually pulled off quite well. ‘Roof of Your Car’ is a bit more happy go lucky with an infectious vocal hook whilst ‘Puzzled by People’ has more of a mood about, still keeping a nice bounce involved. ‘Without a Blink’ picks up the pace a bit, a more upbeat feel. ‘Blip on a Screen’ is a back to a suitably serious vibe. Other tunes on the album include ‘ABC’ which has a garage style to it, ‘Trying to Kill Me’, ‘Trust Me’ and ‘Lock the Locks’. A good album but for any Streets Fan, I think it will be hard to top some of their past work.

Various

Hospitality Drum & Bass 2011 (Hospital Records)

This fresh Drum and Bass mix CD starts with a collaboration between Danny Byrd and Netsky, jumping straight into the energy. Smooth mixes and a good variety of tunes taking you on a journey through D&B, Dubstep and touching on the Drumstep side as well with Original Sin and Taxman’s joint effort, ‘Penamana’. This will not fail to get you moving, whatever time of day, wherever you are, this is a collection of high energy mixed well with the variety to keep you interested to the end. Netsky’s remix of Swedish House Mafia’s -’One’ is a particular tune to look out for as well as Danny Byrds contributions which speak for themselves.

T.I

No Mercy

(Grand Hustle / Atlantic)

Considering this is his 7th album, quite suitably named ‘No Mercy’, you have to give him props for the achievements he has under his belt so far. The album has an impressive line up of collaborations to boast. With guest appearances from Kanye West, Eminem, Christina Aguilera, The-Dream, Kid Cudi, Chris Brown, Pharrell, Drake and more, it’s enough to gather interest from a wide audience without even knowing who he is. The collaboration with Chris Brown ‘Get Back Up’ has already been a smash hit gaining regular airplay on 1Xtra and Choice FM. As far as Hip Hop/R&B albums go, this has a gloss of quality over it and stands out amongst the rest. It came out on 24th January so if your a fan of T.I you should have been blasting this on repeat already. www.247magazine.co.uk

Laura Malarkey

“Tiny tears have gathered in the corner of your eyes, the smile upon your lips is just your heartache in disguise, lonely you need never be, if you’d only realise, you’ve got me for company.” (Billy Paul)

“Je t’aime... moi non plus.” (Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg)

“And we will know, won’t we? The stars will explode in the sky. But they don’t, do they? Stars have their moment and then they die.” (Nick Cave)

Foreign Exchange Authenticity

(+FE records) Producer Nicolay comes again with a new Foreign Exchange album but this time with a slight twist. For those that don’t know their story, years ago when online file sharing was still quite new Nicolay and Little Brother rapper Phonte did a whole album without ever meeting, nowadays pretty much everyone does it this way. Their last two albums have been wicked, very soulful beats and as you would expect from Phonte bang on flows, on this album though whilst the beats still have hip hop flavas to them, the samples have gone and the sound is very much like a new Jon Legend rather than a new Little Brother. A new direction and a move that has ever bit of quality their previous albums had.

Gangrene Gutter Water

(Decon records) Another album from a favourite hip hop producer of mine, the Alchemist. Alchemist has been on the rise for the longest time, progressively putting out soul jams with bigger and bigger artists but on this one he has gone grittier and darker and collaborated with Stones Throw artist Oh No. On this release they both share the mic and the man the boards and the output is amazing. The sound of this would usually be a little dark for me, but here while on a night time drive into Cornwall this felt perfect. If you are into Madlib or any other Stones Throw artists then this is for you, if you’re more into Nelly then maybe give this a steer.

Talib Kweli

Gutter Rainbows

(Duck Down Records) I’ve always loved Talib Kweli, since those first times of hearing him on the early rawkus releases, for me though the last few albums have suffered from not having the right producers. Talib’s flow is always on point and once again that’s the case, I don’t know who the producers on this one are as I just got sent a link to some mp3’s heavily idented which puts you off listening to the album all the way through properly. The tracks have a similar to flow and style to the beautiful struggle album, but nothing struck me like the next “get by” or “the blast”.

Rewd Adams Rewd Awakening

(Halal Beats Records) Here’s a uk rapper that seems to have all the boxes ticked, decent write ups in the press, decent beats in a variety of styles and covering radio friendly and more underground beats, radio support and decent collabo’s with other uk guests. The productions do shine brightly on this, so much so that every now and then I’m missing a decent line and having to rewind the track to check it. Overall a great album, if you are into the likes of Jehst, Skinnyman etc you should check this.

The Patrick James Pearson Band

www.myspace.com/ patrickjamespearson The name may be a bit of a mouthful but when it comes to music they’re grandmasters, pure and simple. The ‘Olé! We Ain’t Prey’ EP is a wonderful pick’n’mix of post-punk groove, Bowie-esque cadence, downbeat coo and fuzzy keyboard pop that does its level best not to repeat itself. The title track (and first single from imminent debut album) is a dazzlingly inventive song that evokes the melodic, lateral thinking of Les Savy Fav. With a complete gear shift, the minimalist ‘Recall Your Art’ is Marc Bolan re-imagined by The Evens; while a reworking of ‘Olé! …’ allows for more leftfield aspirations. Pure class.

Just Duggy and the Insurgents

www.myspace.com/justduggy Shufflesome Plymouth folksters, these guys don’t quite scale the heights of their blue-collar heroes but there’s enough Rumblestrips-esque charm on their album ‘There And Back Again’ to warrant your attention. Duggy’s voice is unsteady but inviting, brushed with a northeast inflection accrued from his hometown of Sunderland. ‘A Name On The Wall’ has worthy if well-trodden anti-war sentiments, ‘A Man Walked Into A Bar’ has a gently melancholic motif, while the R&B lilt of ‘Pacifish Blues’ proves that Duggy’s no sonic one-trick pony. In an ideal world, there would be a grittier attitude on display but, as demo albums go, it’s a praiseworthy artefact.

Cheating Jack Ketch

www.myspace.com/ cheatingjackketch Clearly in awe of the Gallows sneer, this fresh-offthe-blocks Plymouth trio keep things wretched and riff-centric on ‘The Bloodbeard’ EP. The title track ticks as many post-millennial punk boxes as possible with low-string chugging, relentless pacing and menacing growls; while elsewhere there are dissonant chords, heaving rock’n’roll breakdowns and more menacing growlage. At times, the band (unwittingly?) even stray into noisier Nirvana territory which is, of course, no bad thing. The playing is a little loose in places – tightness being one of the golden rules with this kind of sonic assault – but you suspect that CJK will iron out those creases in good time.

Bad Ideas

www.myspace.com/badideasuk Featuring ex-members of The Living Daylights, this Lincoln quartet inhabit that likeable middle ground between The Weakerthans and Jawbreaker, strumming reflective odes to love and life with scant regard for circle pits and male bonding sessions. Demo opener and standout song, ‘The Bitter End’, makes like a benign Alkaline Trio, while ‘Breathe In Breathe Out’ alludes to the singalong melancholy of The Lawrence Arms. Eschewing distortion for an acoustic guitar is an old trick but it means that the tunes have to stand up on their own without the bludgeoning physical clout. Bad Ideas needn’t worry. Their songwriting nous and ear for a familiar melody will stand them in good stead.

Lonely Tourist

www.myspace.com/lonelytourist Lonely Tourist is unmistakably Scottish but has been a regular on the South West gig circuit for the past year & enjoyed a couple of bigger gigs, Bristol Dot to Dot festival & Bristol Harbour Festival. His debut album ‘Sir I Am A Good Man’ grabs you from the start with a beautiful melancholy and endearing Scottish twang. His vocals have the right amount of angst to make it interesting (rather than simply twee) but are soft enough to remain tuneful, a la Frank Turner. You’ve got to love artists who can pretty much speak their lyrics to the backdrop of a simple guitar without sounding tedious like his former tourmate Malcolm Middleton (Arab Strap)

Zeropilot

www.myspace.com/zeropilot If you like your rock solid yet accessible then you’ll like Zeropilot. Hailing from Bristol, the 4 piece are all seasoned musicians. The tight drumming compliments Eddie Vedder-esque vocals perfectly – like a heavy Pearl Jam. With strong confident intros you’re left longing for the bulk of the song to kick in and when it does you’re not left disappointed. They have a remarkable knack for taking the good bits of metal, grunge and rock and leaving the shit to the other more pigeon-holed bands. Zeropilot that timeless appeal of bands like Deftones and Faith No More. America you can keep your pop punk shit like Good Charlotte and Fall Out Boy, we got the real thing here in Bris.

My Deprivation

www.myspace.com/mydeprivation At first listen, it’s hard to believe that My Deprivation come from sleepy Somerset. They are loud and angry and one wonders where and to whom they would play their hardcore metal In Yeovil. But they’ve been going for more than three years now and recently made it through to the regional finals of the Surface Unsigned comp. The vocals are strong and sincere, the drumming rhythmic and hypnotizing and the guitar riffs melodic and well-placed. Sometimes the roaring vocals can be a bit overbearing but then I’m an indie kid at heart so am probably being a bit mumsy about it. Check out their new EP Hard Times, Cold Lives, We’re Tied for a snapshot of what these boys are all about.

Astroid Boys

www.myspace.com/traxxcardiff These guys have some energy to them. They compliment a Dubstep beat just as much as they compliment a Hip Hop or Eski beat. Their album, Space Jam, starts with an intro that drops into a nasty Dubstep beat but it moves into a Bassline sound with smooth flowing lyrics and hyper hooks that will get the crowd singing along nicely. The beats have straight up nasty basslines whilst the Astroid Boys spit effortless smooth lyrics over them. ‘What We’re Talking About’ is a reply to Redlight and Ms Dynamite’s ‘What You Talkin About’ and it will have you in stitches if you listen to the lyrics closely. ‘Jungle Booku’ is showcasing their Hip Hop talents in a very tongue and cheek way. They work together neatly and have a catchy way about them. (UK Rocka)

This newest film from Darren Aronofsky is apparently a bit like Marmite, you either love it or you hate, but it should be visually stunning given the director’s previous films - Requiem for the Dream and The Wrestler.

Sanctum (TBC)

Released: 4 February Dir: Alister Grierson Starring: Rhys Wakefield, Allison Cratchley and Christopher Baker 2010/US/TBC An underwater cave diving team experiences a life-threatening crisis during an expedition to the unexplored and least accessible cave system in the world. This could be the cinematic sleeper of the new year. Produced by the uber-talented James Cameron in glorious 3D, which should make the cave diving extra claustrophobic, this should be a thrill rocket.

The Rebound (15)

Dir: Bart Freundlich Starring: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha 2010/US/95 min Zeta-Jones plays Sandy, a happily married woman who seems to have the perfect life. But when she discovers her husband’s infidelity while watching her son’s birthday video, she flees from her comfortable suburban haven to New York City. Floating through life without direction, Aram (Bartha) accepts Sandy’s offer of a job as her nanny whilst Sandy takes on work for the first time since her children were born. Their relationship blossoms into an unlikely romance, but the question is: is their relationship real or is it just a rebound for both of them?

Titanic II (15)

Dir: Shane Van Dyke Starring: Bruce Davison, Brooke Burns, Marie Westbrook 2010/ US/90mins If you were asked to name a film which didn’t warrant a sequal, Titanic would be up there at the top of the list. However, this action packed simply named Titanic II film defies that assumption. It’s based around an identical voyage carried out 100 years after the doomed original journey and guess what? This one sinks too. Sorry if we’ve ruined it for you. We’re watching this one out of morbid curiosity more than anything else. Enter at www.247magazine.co.uk

“I was enveloped in my duvet for the whole duration, dreaming of hot tea and Gilmore Girls re-runs.”

LIvE Cabaret & Discotheque, Vauxhall Street, PL4 0EY. Five-piece Disco

Funk, Soul, big wigs & high boots band!

Sun.13 Who the hell would tour the UK during the coldest December since records began? Crazy Arm, that’s who. So off we shivered along the highways and byways with our soon-to-be close friends, APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE in tow. Let it be said that they are one of the greatest feel-good punk rock bands in the country. They’re also among the greatest feel-good people I have met. Needless to say, these two qualities are mutually inclusive. First stop, Exeter (Cavern, 9 Dec) – a powerful sound, a decent crowd and an auspicious start. Openers, FALSE ARRESTS, were a wobbly yet endearing punk prospect. The Southampton show was rewarding for both bands, especially as we enjoyed our first bonding session by drunkenly frugging to Dizzy Rascal and The Descendents at the post-gig silent disco (Unit, 10 Dec). However, Bristol was our first true highlight of the tour (Croft, 11 Dec). A whole host of great bands played – quaint folk manoeuvres from JIM LOCKEY, hyperreal rapcore from STEVE FRENCH & THE BIG CATS, an astonishingly reinvigorated CAVES – but we never expected the place to stay so packed or animated for us. Thanks. A soul-destroying night in Bridgend proved how horribly inconsistent this touring lark can be. The town was deserted, the venue joyless and the sound swampy (Hobos,12 Dec). We all consoled ourselves afterwards by shamelessly canoodling with the promoter’s pet dog and cats. A decent Cheltenham show put much-needed smiles on our phizogs (Frog & Fiddle, 13 Dec), while Birmingham’s hearty shindig was in contrast to the gloomy artifice of the city itself (Scruffy Murphys, 14 Dec). We’d all been greatly looking forward to Norwich and, true to form, it was monumental (Wildman, 15 Dec). Apologies I Have None were phenomenal, garnering the kind of heart-swelling response that their beautifully anthemic music demands; CYNICS, aka acoustic troubadour Giles Bidder, was on passionate red-faced form; and THIS BUSINESS IS CLOSED supplied the Fugaziite charm. This was also the night that the four usually benign members of Apologies came apart at the seams, much to our delight, due to a startlingly small amount of alcohol. And lo, the big freeze started to kick in on our way to Leeds (Santiagos, 16 Dec). Our good friend, Luke Yates, joined us on fiddle for a couple of songs, but the night belonged to Apologies who were still beaming if slightly dog-eared from the night before. SOUNDS OF SWAMI and CHIEF both put in solid sets. Driving to London overnight proved wise as we all awoke to a snow-covered, thus romantically imbued, Hackney. One jump-start later and we’re on our way to the penultimate show (Café El Paso, 17 Dec). We were looking forward to the last two gigs because our good friends, THE DISSOCIATES, were joining the travelling circus. They were typically wired and focussed but, unfortunately, Apologies suffered their worst night of the tour (despite playing brilliantly). Worse was yet to come, as the band were left stranded in London the next day, thus missing out on the Plymouth finale. We’d decided – wisely, once again – to drive through the night, although trundling along the M4 at 30mph through relentless snow was no picnic. Of course, I was enveloped in my duvet for the whole duration, dreaming of hot tea and Gilmore Girls re-runs. Bizarrely, The Dissociates managed to get to Plymouth by leaving mid-afternoon and seemingly not giving a shit. Despite missing Apologies like crazy, we partied hard (White Rabbit, 18 Dec): HEAD OF PROGRAMMES were their typically effective black-country selves, The Dissociates won many new converts, while THE BEDROOM PROJECT heroically stood in at short notice with an arch display of skewered new wave. Two New Year resolutions: 1. We will tour with Apologies I Have None again, 2. But not in December. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
