We’re in the full throng of the Autumn gig season and I, for one, am knackered! Cramming in at least three or four gigs a week I’m starting to crave my sofa, a cup of tea and some shit TV but how can I even contemplate staying in when there is so much going on. The end of the year sees tours from some of my favourite artists; including The National, The Divine Comedy and Arcade Fire. Result. What’s more, we’re finally getting involved in our own festival with the awesome guys at Bristol’s Dreamboat Records. Taking over Start the Bus for a week in December we can promise you top quality music and all round good times. Movember Mania Gents across the region are dedicating their upper lips to a month of

moustache growth this Movember. Mo Bros (with help from their female supporters Mo Sistas) will be growing a ‘Mo’ (Australian slang for a moustache) throughout the month formerly known as November, to raise money for prostate cancer. Last year more than 45,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas across the country took part raising £5million. Supporters this year include Bristol University&UWE, Cardiff&UWIC, Bristol Rugby Club and the Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey team. Bespoke Male Grooming Company in Bristol is offering Mo Bros half price VitaMan grooming sessions throughout the month and The Windsor Barbers in Cardiff, free grooming sessions in return for a small donation. Both establishments will shave the facial fuzz off for free at the end of the month. DJ Masterclasses at Catapult Cardiff

Catapult Vinyl in Cardiff is offering free digital DJ masterclasses this winter. The first one takes place instore between 6pm and 8pm on November 25, with another session on December 9. The sessions are led by experts Numark&Focusrite Audio Engineering - leading authorities in the world of digital DJing and will provide technical insight into the most innovative computer DJ packages; including Ableton, Traktor, Serato, Mixtrack Pro, Mixdeck, and Launchpad among others. Shafiq Zahar’s creative photograph of the new Cabot Circus car park has been voted the winner of ‘Bristol a Second Look 2010’. The Eye depicts the modern building in an abstract light and appears to be a work of art in its own right. It was voted for by the public and selected by a panel of judges looking for a new insight into life in Bristol. The competition, now in its third year, is staged by the city’s Second Look group of creative photographers. The brief for the competition challenged anyone with a camera, however experienced, to come up with photographs that showed unnoticed aspects of what we might otherwise pass by, small things we might take for granted, details with hidden interest or beauty or places which people might not normally be able to see.

THE EDGE NEW FOLK CLUB IN BRIDGEND Derek Smith, from acclaimed Welsh Celtic folk rock outfit Mabon who’ve just released their debut live album, has launched a new fortnightly Monday club for folk/roots/ world music at the 80 capacity Haywain Pub in Bridgend, South Wales. One gig a month features a special guest artist, while the other monthly gig is a quality open mic night. Derek says he’s keen to provide this as an opportunity for good quality local bands to show their skills, and for more established touring artists looking to fill an extra night in between gigs. The night will showcase some of the best local bands and visiting artists. Launch night took place on October 21 and featured the Jon E Vistic Experience. Former Pressure DJ’s and 247 Magazine contributors Kayleigh and Jamie took to the decks for some floorfilling rockabilly, motown, blues and backstabbing indie as well as some old Britpop numbers. There was also a drawing competition! Hear No Evil takes place on Thursday nights from 7pm until 3am. MUSIC SOUTH WEST Music South West, the music convention for the South West of England, is back. Following on from the success of the sold-out debut event in 2009, the industry festival returns to Bristol for two days this month (Nov 24&25). There will be industry talks and discussions by day, and the best new music from the region by night, with national and international guests also showcased at venues across the city as part of the Music South West Live Fringe. We here at 247 Magazine spend a lot of our time going on about festivals, we thought it was about time we got involved in our own; so we’ve teamed up with the wonderful folk at the Bristol-based Dreamboat Records and art contingent Inkygoodness to bring you a five day festival of indie music at one of Bristol’s best loved venues, Start The Bus, next month. Artists include This Is The Kit (see music page for review), Colorama and SJ Esau among others. We caught up with Ben Bradshaw, from Dreamboat Records, to tell us about the label’s journey from obscurity to a global player with some very famous names under its belt (including Robert Pattinson from Twilight, John Parish and BBC 6 Music’s Adam&Joe). So, tell us about Dreamboat Records... Dreamboat started in 2005 with myself, Mike Williams and John Robins. We were looking to help some very talented friends out by releasing their music. We would release everything on all black CDs in lovely screen-printed recycled card cases. We then signed a distribution deal with US label Absolutely Kosher and with a few calculated risks and some luck we managed to get some pretty big releases out, which enabled us to start making some serious signings and go full time. We’re now looking at 8-10 releases a year and signing 2-3 more artists in 2011. We’re currently in the process of firming up a publishing arm and are taking on the management of a couple of our artists as well. How do you compete against the big corporate labels, such as Sony and EMI? We compete by not competing with them. They are sprawling operations and need vast incomes to keep them running - we keep ourselves trim and mobile with low overheads which means we can break even on a release much quicker than any larger label could hope to. We also focus on quality both musically and with the packaging. If you expect someone to part with money for a CD or LP then it has to look, feel and sound good - an over priced plastic case and cheap printing is no longer acceptable! How would you say the way we consume music has changed and is the iPod a good or bad thing in your eyes? I think digital music and the iPod is a great thing but we are in a very interesting period of transition right now where it looks like things are about to come full circle. We are finding that there is a gradual shift back towards people owning physical products which they care for and love in a way they can’t with mp3s. Saying that, people still want freedom of mp3s on the move so we make it easy for them by including free mp3 download codes in any physical purchase. What are the benefits of being based in Bristol? And how do you rate the local music scene? Bristol is an incredible city for music, we are surrounded by constant talent and exciting new things. There as so many music business hidden away in Bristol that people don’t always realise which support and work off each other. As for music, there is a wealth of talent constantly bubbling away and right on our doorstep so it’s very easy to keep your finger on the pulse. How do you discover new music to sign? Does it work when bands bombard you with demos? We get a fair few demos coming through each week and while we can’t get to them right away we always make the effort to listen. Normally we will have been following someone for a while, or there has been some industry chatter that has led us to listen to something. We need a couple of things before we can think about working with an act: Firstly, we have to love the music (we can only work with music we can’t turn off). Secondly, the act is out working hard already so we can see that any help we give will just magnify what they are already doing. www.247magazine.co.uk

Dreamboat Presents is your most ambitious event to date, have you done any similar events in the past? If so, tell us about those, if not, why not? We have always done a Christmas party, but only one night and fairly low key - We have, until now, just focused on releasing the music and that has taken enough of our time. However, now we’re wanting to get out and about into our local community and be a part of the live music scene that has given us so much over the years, so doing something bigger made sense. Could this potentially become a regular thing? If so, who would be your dream artist to secure on the line up? I think it certainly could become a regular thing and we already have plans in place. A dream line up? - I know John in the office would like the following: Magnolia Electric Company followed by Van Morrison followed by Queen. I think that’s unlikely for several reasons. Working for a cool indie label must be a dream come true, any advice to people thinking of doing the same sort of thing? Get stuck in and the only real way to learn is by trying and making mistakes. It’s certainly not rocket science but care, attention to detail and giving yourself plenty of time to plan and put everything into action is very important. It’s also worth taking time to think about what informs and attracts you to music in the first instance, work out what works for you and then try and emulate that. What’s the most embarrassing music ever played in the Dreamboat office? I don’ think we would be embarrassed about any of the ELO or Genesis that occasionally comes on, but the album that John and I wrote as a Christmas “present” for friends could be classed as an embarrassment if it got into the wrong hands!

As she prepares to play a homecoming gig in Swindon, Bath-born singer Gabby Young talks to Laura Williams about her inspirational upbringing in Wiltshire and her lifelong love of music. “When I was six years old I remember telling my mum I was going to be a musician. I never really had anything else I wanted to do,” said Gabby. The 26-year-old started learning the violin when she was six and went on to try her hand at pretty much every instrument going – including the flute, clarinet, double bass, piano and saxophone. She said: “The good thing was that it taught me how to read music. I can understand why there’s a lot of people who can’t read music, it’s not needed, but I think it’s really nice to have that grounding in the classical sphere because that’s where it all began. It also means that my voice has endurance – a lot of the new pop singers don’t have that. I was training to be an opera singer and my teacher said ‘you should be doing rock music’. I was always a rebel so the thought of living, sleeping and eating opera became hard at 18.” Luckily for us, Gabby turned her back on opera, left her family home near Calne in Wiltshire and headed to London to do a year-long singing course. It wasn’t long before she joined a band and started performing her own songs. “I didn’t think I was a very good songwriter,” she said. “But people were telling me different. When I came back to Wiltshire at 19, I started to play open mics. I always drew inspiration from Wiltshire – it’s a very mystical place, what with the Avebury circle. When you live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by fields, your imagination can go wild. But when you’re in the city it’s all streets and houses and there’s a limit to where you can go with that. I did a small stint in Manchester to try and make it as a serious musician but I didn’t fit in at all. There’s this big drink and drugs culture up there and I’m tee total.” This summer has seen Gabby touring the festival circuit with her band, so how does she cope being one of the only sober ones in a field full of wasters? 8|

“When I was old enough to realise that being a rebel was not that much fun I decided to go tee total. I’ve always been a very driven person and anything that will hold me back, mentally and physically, didn’t make sense. And I’m allergic to alcohol. I’m really lucky to have such a loving band, which includes my boyfriend (Stephen Ellis from Revere). They get that there are certain situations where I’m going to feel like the alien and are really good at steering me away from them.” Wiltshire folk may recognise Gabby from her old band, The Gabby Young Collective, which used to gig in the Marlborough/ Swindon area in the mid Noughties, until Gabby was hit by thyroid cancer – but it didn’t beat her and after a year off and a major operation to remove her thyroid she came back fighting. She said: “After taking a year off to sort that out I had a chance to reassess my life and decided to move back to London. If I stayed in Wiltshire, it was just going to take more time to get where I wanted to be. As soon as I moved to London, I started to piece together all ‘the animals’. I found my trombone player on Gumtree – he’d posted an ad saying ‘anyone want a bone in their band’, I was intrigued and replied and it worked out perfectly. “I feel lucky to be a child of the Internet generation. From the very start, I had this whole worldwide audience to tap into through things like Facebook&Twitter. I’m aware that my music is all over illegal download sites but I’m very flattered that there are people all over the world who feel the need to share it – my main aim is to get my music out there to as many people as possible. We need to come up with a way of making music a viable business but I didn’t get into this to become a millionaire.” Gabby’s shows are bursting with creativity with the Gaberdashery, a stall which hosts original pieces by designers and artists, for fans to peruse and buy. She also organised a competition to design individual posters for her forthcoming tour, with some stunning results. It’s a far cry from his early Drum & Bass days, but since leaving Roni Size’s Full Cycle label, former Bristol producer Clipz has relaunched himself as a more bassy house artist by the name of Redlight and has now scored a kick ass collaboration with Ms Dynamite. Lekan Latinwo caught up with Redlight inbetween DJ gigs in Bristol and Cardiff. How did you get the name Redlight? Clipz means when the light on the mixer goes Red, so Redlight is a follow on from that. What made you move to London and do you miss Bristol? It was time to do it, all the vocalists and other artists and labels are up here in London so I felt it was time to make the serious move. I’m still back in Bristol a lot as I have family and a lot of friends there, it’s part of me and has shaped me into who I am, but no I don’t really miss it. I needed a new chapter to open. So, do you think you need to live in London to make it in music? I don’t think you do, but I think the industry is up here and if you’re serious about pushing yourself and producing artists, it’s a important step to take. When you visit Bristol, do you link up with anyone from Full Cycle? Yeah, I link with Die sometimes and I see Roni about but everyone has moved on and are doing their own thing; Krust lives in London too, so I see him sometimes and everyone’s good. What inspired your change in music? I’ve grown up listening to and watching British underground music, constantly twisting and changing into new and inspiring sounds. I get inspired by other people’s beats, but don’t wish I had made them, probably because there would be to many. It was just time for me to use my knowledge to create something new, to use everything I’ve learnt along the way, and have fun with it, to enjoy making new beats and not feel confined to one bpm or one sound pallete. www.247magazine.co.uk

Will you ever go back to producing Drum & Bass again? Never say never. How did you get to collaborate with Ms Dynamite on “What You Talking About” and Mz Bratt? They wanted to make beats with me and I want to do it too, so we all hooked it up. I didn’t expect it to be as big as it was. I didn’t really know what to expect, for me this whole thing is just about making the beats I’m into and what ever happens after that is a good thing. But don’t get me wrong, my manager, Chase & Status (who own the label it came out on) and Ms Dynamite all worked hard to get a good production. Do you have any other collaborations lined up? I’m working with Rose’s Gabor, Maverick Sabre, Ms Dynamite, a amazing new singer from Bristol called Nicole Jackson, Tulu Gold, Yasmin, the list goes on… I’m enjoying it and I feel blessed that so many talented peeps wanna come down the roller express (studio). You’re going to be DJing in Cardiff in November, what can we expect from a Redlight DJ set? A lot of my own production and music from other artists that I’m into also the infamous Dread MC hosting and joining up the dots. What words of advice would you have for any one trying to make a career in music? Work hard, be passionate about it, don’t be arrogant, you’re gonna get some big set backs, but its all about picking yourself back up and going again, harder. Redlight plays a DJ set at Sigma, Swansea, on November 16, at CYNT, Cardiff, on November 20 and Dakota, Cheltenham on November 26. He also plays Motion Bristol’s New Year’s Eve party. After wowing the Upfest crowds earlier this year with his intricate painting of a layered lady, street artist Ian Phenna is one of the first people to exhibit at the brand new Upfest gallery on North Street, Bristol. His Branded exhibition (which starts on November 19 and runs until the end of the month) is supported by Glastonbury Ales and features a fine selection of his work. Phenna, 43, was born in Liverpool but is now painting out of the art capital of the UK, Bristol. He has always had skillz with his hands and being able to migrate between different mediums is one of his real talents. He is known mostly for his portrait and figurative work and brings significant elements of his street style to his contemporary based approach to canvas work. Phenna has been working on a body of work which questions the world of advertising in our society, portraying the perfect ideal, the aggressive manner in which it is delivered and the fact that we cannot get away from it in our everyday lives. Every so often one of those undeniably talented, irritatingly young artists comes along and blows the lid off your pre-conceptions of teenagers. It’s not all about Justin Beiber, there’s a whole wave of exceptionally mature sounding singer-songwriters whose sound ain’t a million miles away from the old greats. At 20-years-old Robert Francis puts older folk to shame – though he did leave school early to ‘do music’. Rocking lyrics Ryan Adams&Townes Van Zandt would be proud of, he carves that uplifting melancholy which sets bands like Arcade Fire&The National apart from the rest. ‘Junebug’ is, without a doubt, the standout track on this album but you may want to switch off before last track ‘Do What I Can’, where the vocals start to slip.

Shoulder to the Wheel (ACP Recordings)

There’s a whole nu-folk scene going on at the moment with the likes of Laura Marling and Mumford&Sons but it takes people like Ruarri Joseph to remind us just what was so good about the old-folk scene. A timeless voice and gentle guitar take us on a trip through the English countryside and all if its delights. With roots in Cornwall, Ruarri has done a full circle via a childhood in New Zealand, which despite being the other side of the world ain’t a world away from Cornwall. Vocally he shares the emotional shakiness of David Gray with the depth and sincerity of his pal Paolo Nutini and Aussie singer Alex Lloyd - a perfect soundtrack to a fulfilling life in the South West.

Come Around Sundown (Sony)

Despite being the supergroup that they are, it’s hard to believe this is the Kings of Leon’s fifth album. They impressed critics&cool kids alike back in ‘03 with Youth&Young Manhood and went onto world domination with Only By The Night but here we have their best effort to date. The Followills have adopted a much more mature&considered approach to their lyrics; like they’ve opened their private journals to allow us to hear and feel their strained journey from boys to men. Wriggle Out The Restless

(Dreamboat Records) This is the most recent release from the Bristolbased Dreamboat Records (see pages 8-9) who say they only work with music they can’t turn off; and it was on loop on my stereo all day after I first heard it, especially the hauntingly catching single Moon. Here we have a beautifully mellow Morcheeba/Mazzy Star sound but with that something extra (think PJ Harvey&Kirsty MacColl). This is crystal clear folk music, complete with banjo and lots of oohs and aahs (especially in Earthquake and Sometimes The Sea) but not in a cheesy/ irritating way, more like in a we’re running through an ancient forest looking wistfully at a waterfall isn’t this lovely kind of way.

Small Craft On A Milk Sea The result of several years of collaborative work with Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams, Small Craft On A Milk Sea is Eno’s first to be released on Warp Records, seemingly his natural home. Recent years have seen Eno turn his hand to everything from conceptual art to philosophy, even a collection of conventional songs (the underrated Everything That Happens Will Happen Today with David Byrne). It is comforting then to hear that he is still capable of producing a top quality, boundary pushing instrumental record. The first half of Milk Sea…has a feeling of impending doom, giving way to a blissful second half with tracks like Emerald And Stone evoking his late 70’s heyday.

Stereolab Not Music (Drag City)

Happily, Stereolab’s tenth full length effort shows no sign that their creative well is in danger of running dry at any point soon. All of the usual traits that we expect from a Stereolab album are present and correct; Laetitia Sadier’s cool vocals, meticulously arranged instrumentation and a pop scientist’s knack for effortlessly combining influences from disparate genres and eras. Not Music, recorded in 2007 before the group’s hiatus began, shows a poppier, less guitar heavy side to Stereolab than in recent times. Were it not for the often surprising song structures, some songs veer towards easy listening. However, this makes for an enjoyable, interesting listen

Darkstar North

(Hyperdub)

After last year’s breakthrough single Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer one could have been forgiven for expecting an album of traditionally dance influenced tracks. Instead Darkstar have rethought their sound completely, added vocalist James Buttery and produced a record of subtle, awkward beauty. The cover of the Human League’s Gold is indicative of North as a whole. Traditional song structures are subjected to imaginative arrangements, with lush piano and synths a bed for glitchy, treated vocals. It’s hard to imagine a more natural, fragile electronic album being released this year, recommended for fans of any genre.

Warpaint The Fool

(Rough Trade) A band with impeccable indie-goth pedigree (Siouxsie Sioux had a hand in the mixing of The Fool and actress Shannyn Sossamon was a founder member), Warpaint have followed up last year’s acclaimed Exquisite Corpse EP with an seductive, witchy slow-burner of an album. Fans enticed by that EP and the demos circulating the internet may feel as if The Fool betrays some of the qualities that first attracted them to the band. The sound is much more robust and vocal work less ethereal. These are minor quibbles; The Fool is a dark, hypnotic debut that should win Warpaint a sizeable coven of admirers.

K Ners

Messy EP

(Arcady Records) K Ners has been repping Bristol for years and just keeps on pushing further and further. His hard work is paying off and this heavyweight link up with Kardinal Offishal is ready to pound dancefloors all over. Messy is the name and messy is the nature of this EP. On a big system you won’t be able to stop yourself bouncing to this. The remixes come with the Dubstep touch from fellow Bristolian Mensah and New Zealand’s Beat Monkeys who bring a bass heavy version to the release. This EP is one to watch out for, if you are into your bass heavy Bristol sound, this is the ticket for you!

Concord Dawn The Enemy Within (Uprising)

Concord Dawn delivers as usual with a collection of tunes that will be bouncing off of dancefloors from here to New Zealand. There are guest appearances from Bulletproof and Cern who are New Zealand D&B dons in their own right. Also you will pick up on a distinctive 80’s style vocal from Rikki Morris. You will find some tear out bangers but you will also come across a more deep, minimal sound. ‘Move’ ft JDubs and ‘One & Only’ ft Rido is one I am particularly looking forward to dropping to see the crowd reaction but ‘The Enemy Within’ really does have a punch to it that will be devastating on a big rig. ‘Space Between Us’ is where you will find the deeper minimal sound if that is what you are looking for. A good all round package and an album that will go far, I would advise you to give it a listen if you are into any style of D&B.

Crissy Chris and Youngman Give You The World

(Technique) Crissy Criss & Youngman have been churning out some dancefloor smashers recently and you will find some of them here. Some tunes aren’t as stand out but there is a good mix of genres to keep things fresh. Kick Snare is an obvious one that has blown up massively in its own right already with remixes doing the rounds, killing dancefloors at many a rave. ‘Give You The World’ is a D&B banger to look out for and ‘Bats’ brings a Dubstep flavour to the table. Harry Shotta features on a Hip Hop tune on this album as well so there is a nice variety here for you to get stuck in to.

Time To Escape EP

(Dubpolice) Subscape releases have generally impressed me in the past and with tunes like ‘Nothings Wrong’ permanently staying in my record bag, it is no surprise that I was eagerly awaiting this EP. ‘Screw up’ and ‘Mr Kippling’ are dancefloor bangers to look out for on this EP whilst ‘Just Coz’ is a more laid back track. Dubpolice have come good with a nice variation of tunes bringing the heavy sound as well a lighter vibe. ‘All Day’ and has a fusion of grinding sub bass alongside a nice vocal that comes off well. This is a well thought out EP and well worth a buy for the Dubstep masses. If you are a regular Dubstep buyer, you will know they don’t often fail!

Force Feedback Remixes (Valium Audio)

Gella’s rave tune Force Feedback has just been given a big seeing to by Caper & Run Riot. Caper has provided us with a very heavy breakbeat led version of this track, which still has that nasty old school broken bassline, sounding like someone’s been messing with the audio jacks on the mixer while the bass has been recorded. She’s fast, but not too fast, driving along at pace with a very nice kick drum and hi hat shuffle. Expect a few screwfaces by the time the time the bass kicks in after the drop! Run Riot have gone all dubstep in this release, providing a moody little roller, clopping along nicely with some seriously nice eerie church organ style pads.

Crackerz & Jam

Freq & Can You Find Me (Dusted Breaks)

Crackerz & Jam are back with a wicked little three track release. This one features two original tunes as well as a remix by Chamber. Can You Find Me kicks off nicely with an old school piano riff before dropping into a nice little breakbeat driven number. It’s got enough little amen-esque builds in there to keep your head nodding adding variance to its main hook. Freq starts nice and calm before dropping a wickedly chunky bass hook. The bass groove on this has a swagger, building and dropping quite nicely. The changes, builds and breakdowns in this mix really keep you interested right up to the end.

Cybass

One More Funk / Our Feature Presentation (Plasmapool) Placing the word funk in your tune name is a brave step to make. Cybass’s One More Funk does, however, deserve the accolade. She’s a synthy upbeat breakbeat little number with a funky disco style bassline driving through from start to finish. The vocal stabs and lead instrument sounding like early Jackson 5 meets Daft Punk/Basement Jaxx. Our Feature Presentation is a creamy synth leaden breakbreat track, which is a little darker, but just as funky! The bassline is big, heavy and bouncy, with loads of balls to it! The changes in this come thick and fast. The breakdown features some really nice sounding drum fills.

Somber Bomb / We Don’t Give a F@#K

(Downbeat) First up is the rather driving Somber Bomb which starts off very hard and pounding before dropping into a huge trance style piano hook (think early U2, but without the sunglasses and spinny cameras). By the time this one gets going its got some nice distorted chunky drive behind it. As it stops to take a breather in the middle that piano hook is back before stepping it up a gear and driving it home hard for the last two minutes. We Don’t Give a F@#K is much heavier without being too unlistenable. The bass drive is there throughout, only stopping to breath while the amen loop kicks in. I know you didn’t want your album reviewed here but we had space constraints, I’m afraid. ‘Verbal Weapons’ is the Truro quartet’s first album proper (released on their own Strange Behaviour Records) and, as far as teeth-gnashing punk rock goes, it ain’t too shabby at all. Opting for that early ‘80s, second-wave punk rattle (think GBH, DOA), with the odd Van Halen guitar noodle, ‘Shit Head’ and ‘Bloody Slums’ see the band getting their whole body behind the punch while ‘Pick Up Yourself’ doffs its cap to early Bad Religion. It may not blaze a trail but it will fire up that latent anger in your belly.

Shades of Blue

www.myspace.com/sofb Cornish resident, Mervin Hall, is a man of substance and conscience, but when he transforms those admirable qualities into song via Shades of Blue, the results are akin to Mr Bean lobbing bricks on a picket line. On new album, ‘Carbon Footprint’, the music inoffensively trundles along, incorporating blues-lite and washes of soft rock, with Hall’s voice brushing past the songs like a mild breeze, failing to impact upon the likes of ‘Crowded Room’ except in a faintly comical way. On the eco-friendly title track he opens up a bit only to sound like Randy Newman with the nodules – ie. character – removed. Fans of nothing in particular will probably love it.

40 Seasons

www.myspace. com/40seasonstheband North Cornwall quartet, 40 Seasons are one of those unfortunate bands who take all their basic chops from the mid-‘70s via the local ‘rock’ tavern – which means that they have little in the way of vision but still think they’re keeping the spirit of the legends alive. ‘Halos In The Mud’ is only a little more relevant than the after-cum that dribbles out of Robert Plant’s cock-hole on a Saturday night; while ‘Fly On The Wall’ starts out all poignant with references to the harrowing We Need To Talk About Kevin but never really fulfils its remit. ‘Calling You’ is slightly more promising but, ultimately, you’re left with a feeling of disenchantment. Shame.

Exeter teen troubadour, Rory Matthews, is back with another clutch of lo-fi acoustic ballads under his punk rock nom de plume, Some Sort Of Threat. With ‘Tangles’, nothing much has changed on the songwriting front: lots of words scuttling about over simply crafted and very brief folk ditties (nine in eleven minutes) with that faint air of melancholy seeping through the cracks. Just how we like it. ‘Over The Hill’ reverently chats of a street bum who sings like Tom Waits; while ‘Flinching’ and ‘That’s How Cool You’re Not’, with their self-referential yet bitter testimonies, sound like Frank Turner in his embryonic days. Grand.

Centrefolds

www.centrefoldsmusic.co.uk Despite being one of the newer bands on the Bristol circuit, there is something about Centrefolds which makes you swear blind they’ve been around for years. Their debut EP, released earlier this year, is a hotpot of loud guitars, angsty lyrics and rocky vocals. While they nail the whole Green Day/Incubus sound there’s also a slight nod to the ever popular Matt Cardle from this year’s X-Factor with some falsetto vocals dragging In Your Blood from the mosh pit to the alter. Or not. When there’s less guitar and more vocals you’d be forgiven for lumping these guys in with the likes of The Bluetones, with catchy melodies and uplifting drums, and that’s no bad thing in my books!

This female-fronted troupe describe themself as being from ‘deepest darkest Devon’ and I’m sure there are darker things in Devon, but they certainly wouldn’t be out of place in an 80’s Brat Pack or 90s US teen vampire flick. Upbeat and energetic, this sound is clearly influenced by some of those 80s greats Cyndi Lauper&Blondie though the sound isn’t dissimilar to those 90s Britpop female fronted bands Echobelly&Lush. Apologies for the reliance on comparisons to female fronted bands but there’s just no escaping it. The best place to hear this music would be in some bare-brick walled underground pub with a cider and black in hand all dolled up to the nines. Bring it on!

Romantic Rights

www.romanticrights.co.uk Sometimes you can tell by looking at a band’s logo, font and artwork exactly what they sound like. If that doesn’t work then you can usually at least partially trust the blurb that accompanies their music. Here you cannot. The artwork looks kind of electro and they are described as Daft Punk meets Muse but you will seriously struggle to put this Welsh band into one box. In places the production stands out like a sore thumb with them adopting a Super Mario type ditty which somehow turns into one of those generic dance songs you’d hear in the gym then they go rockier, like an electro Fall Out Boy (the horror!).

Nosferatu D2

www.myspace.com/nosferatud2 You can tell this Croydon duo are real music lovers as their debut self-titled album is brimming full of references to other musicians, from the straight-up titled Springsteen to We’ll Play The Power Of Love By Frankie Goes To Hollywood, they wear their hearts on their sleeve. But it’s the nod to the cheesetastic Shakin Stevens in Colonel Parker which steals the show. Nosferatu D2 (which let’s face it, ain’t the best name in the world) have the potential to be brilliant with nods to The National’s heavier stuff but sadly this all gets a bit frantic in places, like Frank Turner trying to do Eurodisco by Bis. Ultimately, they remind me of Feeder.

Well hello again readers, here we go with another mouth frothing summary of the past months gigs, this past month has been monstrous on the gig going front, there have been some real high flying legends co-horting themselves through Bristol. First up was KRS One, who needs no introduction to hip-hop fans as he was one of the true pioneers of the genre in the 80’s; he bounded onto the full-capacity launch of Bristol In:Motion at the Bristol mega club Motion. He was complimented by Skitz & Rodney P in support and a whole host of Djs; this meant that he did not take to the stage until the paltry hour of 2am. Still it gave him ample time to rattle out real hip hop and whoop whoop loads of times. The very next day I had to play a last min Non Compus Mentus show at Mr Wolfs with me feeling like as if I had been head butting a wall constantly for 7 hours, which for some reason helped me to deliver an ultra intense performance. Islet, who are one of my favourite live bands of the moment provided a perfectly mesmeric show at the Louisiana, if you have not seen these guys live then just go to one of their shows because their live performances are nothing less than spectacularly engaging and erratic, with various members running off into the audience and screaming in people’s faces. It’s like as if Los Campesinos had taken way too much lemon sherbet and bound around like hyper-active kids. The Black Angels played the Thekla later that week, and I turned up early to catch up with Kool-Aid Electric Company who I had seen a couple of months before supporting Silver Apples. The last time I saw The Black Angels was two and half years ago at the Fleece, at that gig I remember seeing a massive force field around me (due to my synesthesia), little did I know that this time round my visions would be so much more intense! I mean I saw an eyeball try and eat me at one point, because the mixture of light and sound triggers off certain things in my head. Both Yuck and Fanzine engrossed me with their take on the American lofi indie sound, both clutching more than a handful of ear grabbing, floor board bouncing tunes. Errors and Twilight Sad did the friendly co-headline tour visiting the Fleece, displaying both their varsity in styles and volume and craft with distortions and the way that both bands built up their songs - Twilight Sad with their epic force and Errors with their more dancey based shoe gaze. John Peel favourites Melt Banana absolutely destroyed the Thekla taking the lead for potential gig of the year. I have seen these guys two or three times before but nothing can quite prepare you for the sonic speed barrage that hits you when they take to the stage. The technicality of what they play is ridiculous, looping guitars at over 100 mph with crashing beats, sporadic female yelps as well as amazing hydraulic sounds coming from an instrument that looked like a cross between a Theremin and a chaos pad. They did an ultra intense encore squeezing 7 songs in just over 5mins. I could hardly walk because of the bruises sustained on both knee caps! Ouch!

I also got to see the legendary reclusive rapper MF Doom at the 02 Academy and yes the real Doom did turn up, contrary to some of the rumours. The next day saw Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip turning out more of the songs, supported by the bemusing spectacle of the all female psychedelic choir Gaggle. Wolf People also lead another contender for gig of the year at the Louisiana, they attacked 60’s and 70’s styled psychedelic rock breaking free into jams like early Jethro Tull/Led Zeppelin. www.247magazine.co.uk

But the Invisible Circus’s Carny Ville at the Old Firestation in Bristol ain’t no ordinary party.
