ILLUSTRATION BY YEE TING KUIT Yee Ting Kuit graduated from University College Falmouth in 2006 with a first class honours degree in Illustration. Since then, she’s worked freelance as an illustrator and spent over a year in Hong Kong working as a graphic designer.

Now based in Birmingham, Yee is inspired by nature, bright colours, pattern, typography and printmaking. She looks up to Hayao Miyazaki, and says. “His work ethic is amazing, I can only hope that I’ll still be drawing away well into my seventies. I also like Adrian Johnson’s work, it’s really colourful and witty.”

at the museum, with fans travelling from across the UK to see Bansky’s biggest UK show to date. Featuring over 100 pieces, from painting to installations and stencils, the show features 78 new pieces. Banksy said in Evening Post: “The people of Bristol have always been very good to me – I decided the best way to show my appreciation was by putting a bunch of old toilets and some live chicken nuggets in their museum. “I could have taken the show to a lot of places, but they do a very nice cup of tea in the museum.” The Bristol-born artist, who has never revealed his true identity, has become an iconic figure among the artistic community since his first pieces of graffiti appeared in the late 1980s. The show, entitled Banksy vs Bristol Museum is open from 10am-5pm daily, with last entry at 4pm.

Cardiff Festival Returns: Bigger And Better

Taking over the whole of Cardiff during July and August, the Cardiff Festival brings together a wide range of different art, music and leisure events, all under one banner. Highlights this year include the UK’s biggest free outdoor music festival – the Admiral Big Weekend, with three days of quality live music, alongside Europe’s biggest travelling fun fair situated in the city’s civic centre. Admiral Big Weekend headliners include Kids In Glass Houses on Fri 31 July, Third World on Sat 1 Aug and The Zutons on Sun 2 Aug. Hled on the City Hall lawns and attracting over thousands of people over three days, all events are FREE, but get there early! Other events include ‘WOW on the Waterfront’ on 24 & 25 July, from 9pm with a range of European street theatre in Cardiff Bay, rounded off with a huge firework display.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the annual Cardiff MAS Carnival, taking place on 1 August, which brings Cardiff City Centre alive with hundreds of flamboyant costumes and carnival creations, masks and headpieces, giant puppets on backpacks and mobile sculptures – all dancing dynamically through the streets of Cardiff with a finale presentation at The Big Weekend (with the Zutons) on City Hall lawn. The 2009 theme is “HERE BE DRAGONS” – a colourful cavalcade of all things Welsh, especially the Red Dragon who celebrates 50 years emblazoned on the Welsh flag! ST PAUL’S CARNIVAL returns on Sat 4 July – this is one of the highlights in Bristol’s events calendar and a key celebration of the unique culture and spirit in St Paul’s. Featuring the usual incredible colourful processions with various schools and community groups taking part, big stage and sound systems with dozens of bands and DJ’s filling the streets with jazz, hip hop, dub, reggae and dance, if you only go to one summer event this year, make sure it’s this one! And best of all, it’s free and runs from mid-day to midnight.

The biggest dance festival of the summer, GLOBAL GATHERING takes place at the end of this month just outside Stratford Upon Avon. NEWS Boogie for Brizzle

Bristol Zoo’s annual summer festival is back for another jammed packed day of music, theatre, circus acts, cabaret, food, drink and fun for all ages. Boogie for Brizzle will be held on Saturday July 18, in the Zoo’s impressive 12-acre grounds.

It is the only night of the year the entire zoo stays open until late, celebrating and showcasing Bristol’s abundant home-grown talent, including some of the best performers and live music the city has to offer. The line up on the Zoo’s Main Stage includes urban reggae from Laid Blak, soulful country from Phantom Limb featuring vocalist Yolanda Quartey of Massive Attack, mellow acoustic vocals from Phil King and eclectic acappella from World Roots Voice Ensemble. Over on the Other Stage there will be street theatre from Splott Brothers with their mobile piano bar, break-dance, sublime circus acts and comedy theatre for all the family. Throughout the day there will also be walkabout entertainers, circus skills workshops, kids’ shows, face-painting, gorilla games, BBQs, beer tents and more. Taking place on Saturday, July 18 from 3pm until late, the event is in support of Bristol Zoo’s Year of the Gorilla campaign to raise funds and awareness to help the survival of these critically endangered animals.

Bristol’s biggest summer hardcore party returns to the O2 Academy on Sat 8 August with a huge line-up reading like the who’s who of the hardcore scene. It’s been three years since Oxgyen first touched down in Bristol, since then they have gone on to produce some of the biggest hardcore parties in the city. The Summer Slam 2 is their biggest event ever, spread over two rooms which sees Darren Styles and Lethal Theory LIVE, Hixxy, Scott Brown, Gammer, SY, Scorpio, Producer, Andy Vortex, Ribbz and Seuction amongst others. Bristol photo competition Following on from the success of Bristol A Second Look 2008, the organisers are once again challenging the people of Bristol to take a second look at their city. Opening on July 16th with an exhibition of Bristol views from the members of Second Look (on show at Photographique, Baldwin St from July 16th - 22nd), the photo competition is free to enter & open to everyone who lives or works in Bristol or the surrounding areas. The judges are looking for images that represent unnoticed aspects of Bristol, small things we take for granted and places which people might not normally be able to see amongst others. T4 on the Beach – Are you ready?

The biggest beach party in the UK returns to Weston Super Mare on 19 July with over 40,000 people expected to see the likes of Alesha Dixon, Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal, Metro Station, The Saturdays, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder, The Noisettes, The Enemy, Gossip, JLS, Little Boots, Tommy Reilly, The Maccabees, Basement Jaxx, Floreance and the Machine, Daniel Merriweather, Will Young, Ironik (ft Chipmunk, Shontelle, Frankmusik, Fightstar, Hockey, Taio Cruz and Killa Kela. Zombie film being made at The Big Chill

And if that wasn’t enough, this year, 247 Magazine are proud to sponsor the spot skate comps at Relentless NASS. The Spot Comps are a totally new format for the event, and will incorporate all the natural terrain on offer at the Bath and West Showground. Using a little bit of ply here and there, the Showground will be transformed into street skater heaven. The spots will be marked with 247 markers so they’ll be easy to find. What’s more, there will be cash prizes on each obstacle, and they’ll be open to pros and joes alike. Bionic has been described as one of Wales’ wildest club nights with an electric atmosphere, and has played host to some of the biggest names in hardstyle and European hard trance, including Luna, Lady Dana, Technoboy, Pavo, Showtek, Tatanka, The Prophet, Walt, Duro, Activator and Zany, to name just a few, as well as big names from Eddie Halliwell to Paul Van Dyk. Always at the forefront of the hardstyle/hard trance scene, Bionic has also hosted arenas at some of the UK’s biggest dance music events, including WestFest, Escape Into The Park and South West Four Metro Weekender, and they put on a monthly night on the first Friday of every month at Escapade in Newport. Run by Cally and Brian M, this month, Bionic celebrates it’s ninth birthday. We caught up with Cally for a quick chat and a slice of birthday cake, hardstyle!

What has been the best part of Bionic so far?

I’d say now is a very exciting time for us. We’ve been at our current venue since October, and since then things have gone from strength to strength. Each event has been packed and the atmosphere is better than ever. And if you’ve been to Bionic before you’d know that really is saying something special.

Have there been any low points?

Last year was definitely a low point. After being forced out of Evolution, our home for a very long time, we found it hard to get settled. We spent several months trying different venues and although they were adequate, they lacked that special event feel to them. Luckily the end of the year we found Escapade and things took a turn for the better.

How are you celebrating your ninth birthday?

For this event we’ve got Wildstylez, one of hardstyle’s biggest names this year, hotly tipped by Technoboy, and known for his fierce productions with fellow hardstyle heavyweight Headhunterz, he’s guaranteed to bring a special something to the Bionic birthday. Plus we’ve got MDA & Spherical’s Welsh debut. Add to that a load of surprises for the night and I’m sure we’ll keep everyone entertained right till 5am.

How did Bionic begin?

Brian M used to buy his tunes from Catapult 100% Vinyl in Cardiff, where I was in charge of the hard dance department. One day he offered a partnership to put on events together and without hesitation I agreed. We have a great team now – our four resident DJs (myself, Mr Juice and Brian M and McBunn), are joined by Sat Nav Gav, who looks after all our internet promotion, Dai Cochran, who lends McBunn a hand with the street promotion and Gareth What’s next for Bionic?

Florence and the Machine whirled onto the music scene in 2007, arms flung wide and lungs bellowing, putting stars into the eyes of music journos, surrounded by a storm of critical acclaim and thrilling the waiting crowds with a thumping beat and hauntingly powerful vocals. From jumping off stage mid-gig to dive into a swimming pool at SXSW to supporting MGMT on their European tour, then winning a Brit Award before even releasing an album – the last two years have been a whirlwind of rising success for Florence Welch and her Machine. With debut album Lungs set to hit the shops at the start of July and a summer of gigs ahead, we caught up with Florence at home in London, on one of her rare days off…

The end of 2008 and early months of 2009 saw that frantic buzz of critics choice “Next Big Thing” attention heaped on the band, which Florence admits was a lot of pressure. She says, “When I won the Brit, it was weird, because I didn’t think I had anything to offer. But now the album’s done… and a lot of that Brit stuff has died down, I can feel like it was a nice thing now, rather than terrifying. To win an award before you’ve even done anything is quite strange. I really hope I’ve proved myself, and I’m excited because the album is out there now. It’s a fickle animal, this,” she says of the music industry, and fame. “I’m a real worrier. When the good things are happening, I’m always expecting bad stuff. I try not to read anything people write, because you don’t want to feed your ego, but you don’t want to drive yourself mad thinking about all the bad things that people could say to you. You just have to sort of concentrate on what it is you’re

professional instruments. I just sat down and recorded a drum track on one loose snare, and then the rest of it on a Yamaha keyboard, and that note that begins the track is the first note that came out of my mouth. I wrote Dog Days in the same fashion, with the sound of the drums and me banging my hand against the wall. The main instrument that I had was my voice – well, the main instrument that I was good at…” In true Florence style, she managed to bag James Ford on production duties (who has produced for Klaxons and The Last Shadow Puppets and is drummer for the latter) by running into his office without an appointment and playing him her songs.

She’s inspired to write songs by everything around her, from conversations to art installations to 80s pulp comic books.

If high energy swinging boogaloo is your thing, then you can’t go wrong with a bit of skanktastic jive time from those spiffing dandies, the Zen Hussies. These good humoured chaps (and chapess) have been rocking since 2001, when the original line up met at open mic sessions at the now sadly defunct Hat & Feather in Bath. Their rather dandy style and their good time tunes have made them popular with dancefloors all over the place, as they regularly engage audiences in a long, sweaty and energetic stompathon/singalong with cheap gags aplenty. This summer, they’re touring in Europe and planning to head off to Japan for a tour at the end of the year. Luckily for us, they’re playing at Boomtown Fair in Bristol in August. 247 chatted to frontman Jonah Flatfoot…

Introduce us to your fellow bandmates…

Well, our line up has changed over the years – due in part to custodial sentences for crimes against music. Our present live line up is likely to consist of me (lithe vocalist, wordsmith, rhythm guitarist and clarinettist), Miss Cha Cha Cha Gabor (baritone saxophone, recorder and vocals), Reverend Jack Hammer (cornet, melodica and iPhone), Count Sebski de la moue centimes dans la poche (lead fender telecustard guitar), Commander Crabb Allen (double bass and beard detail), and Master Matt Satin Brown (drums, vocals and youthfulness).

We are staging a birthday extravaganza on The Thekla (18 September) which, also as a tribute to the late great Vyv Stanshall, we shall be transforming (for one night only) back into The Old Profanity Showboat, with lots of walkabout acts, music from ourselves, Tragic Roundabout, Top Shelf Jazz and Smerins’ Auntie Mabel Club… fingers crossed our new LP will be ready too!

What have you got in store for this summer?

People In Planes Beyond The Horizon (Wind-Up)

Playing it safe for the most part, Cardiff quintet, People In Planes, may draw sonic comparisons with the likes of Pearl Jam and Muse but their debut album pales into insignificance when stood against ‘Vitalogy’ or ‘Absolution’. Still, the band do soaring, anthemic rock well enough (‘Mayday’ (M’Aidez)’) and aren’t averse to moments of notable inventiveness. I just wonder how many stadium-shaped bands we need before the metaphorical stadium itself collapses.

Tiny Masters Of Today Skeletons (Mute)

One part DFA, one part Go! Team, one part Sonic Youth, Brooklyn sibling duo, Tiny Masters…, are clearly having fun with their über-cool, lo-fi, funk-punk-party mash-up.

Schoolgirl vocals over new wave guitars embellished by toy instruments and street beats is nothing new but when the band really are of school age (15 and 13) it’s far more justifiable and, crucially, likeable; lending the likes of ‘Two Dead Soldiers’ an eerily irreverent sheen. A mini-treat.

(Marrakesh Records) The electro DJ/producer’s debut album is a mix of irresistible pop tunes that have been whizzed together through a synth and splattered with electro hooks by the irrepressibly cheery former art student and Radio 1 DJ. Songs explore memories from Kissy’s own experiences growing up in Essex – from snogging someone elses’ girlfriend to waking up in the garden covered in dew, and hanging out at cafes...

With both bouncy vocal tracks and epic instrumentals (check out the saw edged synthy beats, driving bassline and zingy hooks on Harriet), this is a summery record that’ll have you running for the dance tent at every festival he plays at.

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (Easy Star Records)

I could listen to Kasabian for a lifetime and still not see the attraction. Sure, their penchant for ‘60s psyche-rock and Kinksian strum is a popular one, and sure, songs like the fabulous ‘Fast Fuse’ swagger with ill-intent.

But, as retro bands go, they’re a triumph of style over content; too often relying on Serge Pizzorno’s default songwriting setting and opting for the lowest common denominator.

A talented bunch, but thinking outside of the box is clearly not on the agenda.

Socialist Leisure Party deliver 8 slices of pure class, nicely packaged on vinyl & CD. Many of the songs are soul-driven and 60s-influenced, with plenty of light & shade, allowing the more upbeat sections of the songs to stand out. The real genius of Socialist Leisure Party lies in the songwriting.

‘Down With the Kids’ and ‘Head in the Hay’ show that the indie-pop sound can have anthemic qualities, without resorting to mainstream boredom. By the time you read this, the second single will already be out on Cloudberry Records. Can’t wait.

Carpetface & Audible bring hip-hop back to the good stuff: humour, great lyrical flows and exceptional beat-boxing skills, to name just a few elements. They went down a treat recently supporting De La Soul in Exeter, they’ve got respect from DJ Format and Dub Pistols, and now the ultimate compliment: a big up from 247. This EP shows that UK hip-hop doesn’t have to be about the tired old doom, gloom and ‘rudeboy’ bollocks.

No Longer At Ease (Yo Mama’s Recording) For those of you not as obsessive as me you might not know the name Nneka but she has bubbling for a while now, always showing promise but not delivering a hit.

Things haven’t changed much, there’s not anything on hear I could hear rocking Radio 1, what there is though is an amazing talent, that given some time could be as big as Lauryn Hill. Though it would be lazy of me just to label her as such the similarities are all there, hip hop flavours with great melodies. One warning though, it’s a sunny album, don’t try and get into it when it rains.

This is High Contrast at his finest, with two discs full of flawless music, from his debut in 2001 to present day. The first CD holds hit after hit that could rock any dance floor as well as being a good listen in the car or at home. CD 2 showcases remixes of some of his own anthems as well as credible artists like Missy Elliot, London Electricity, The Streets, Adele, Eric Prydz, Omnio Trio and more. This record showcases the raw talent of High Contrast and boasts the artists he has been privileged to remix. You don’t have to be into drum and bass to get something out of this album.

Daniel Merriweather Love & War (J Records/Sony Music)

Following on from his work on Mark Ronson’s hit “Stop Me” back in 2007, the spotlight now shines firmly on Merriweather as he finally delivers his own solo album project with Ronson taking care of production duties on the entire album.

Merriweather cites Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jeff Buckley and Herbie Hancock as major influences and his album reflects that with its retro old soul feel. Besides hits Change and Red, other tracks that stand out are album opener For Your Money and Could You which samples the classic California Dreamin by The Mamas and The Papas.

Eight tracks of honest indie music with an Irish twist here. ARON PAUL manages the guitar beautifully and writes pretty ‘lush’ (as you say down in these parts of the country) tunes. Plymouth duo, THE OLD SIGNS, have outdone themselves on album number two ‘Songs From The Garden Shed’. Merging post-modernism with nostalgia, social documentary with surrealist comedy, it’s another utterly bizarre snapshot of what goes on in the minds of Nev’n’Jus – essentially, Chas’n’Dave if they were OAPs with an endearingly unhinged bent. Steam trains, Victorian chocolate bars, cheeky postcards and garden sheds all get the Old Signs’ music-hall treatment while ‘Allotment Song’ advises that “If you are feeling down / No need to wear a frown / Go out and get yourself an allotment”. There’s a synth in Dave’s studio that he loves, I’m sure of it! With most tracks being devised and written around this space aged synth sound I’d say it’s his baby. PICTURESLEEVES are another four piece indie, pop outfit. They state “their frequently under-rehearsed yet triumphant shows went down a storm with local audiences.” Local to where I don’t know but I like their spunk. Chilled out, beatsy and pretty is the best way to pigeonhole 3 TIMES GONE. These tracks ride along nicely in a downtempo, Tosca fashion, and my only problem are the pretty obvious drum loops. Track four, “Heartache” hits the spot for me with contra bass, roughass jazz swing and touch of melancholy. Think Kate Bush with a laptop, distorted violin and an 808. I can see the kids rocking to this in neon mesh gloves or similar. The look of the Aye Aye in the most absolute darkness.

Exeter’s cabaret-punks THE ADVENTURES OF... proffer a heady mix of new wave guitars and lounge sleaze, like World/Inferno Friendship Society with grittier fingernails and Muse-y falsetto frolics. ‘Renegade’ is particularly bloody awesome. Worth a listen. (myspace.com/wearetheadventuresof) Backbone

Devon duo, THE WEAVER TWINS, have hit on a neat formula with ‘Fayre’. Released through Cow Records, it’s a ramshackle ride of acoustic guitars, rootsy mannerisms and heightened vocal involvement; hard to pin Local folk, pop, performer Dirk Landish has down but easy to digest. ‘Digit’ crosses over Pop Noise Records continue in their quest to into Nirvana Unplugged territory, with a refrain champion the indie underdog with this EP by straight from the Cobain canon. But the band East Devon’s FAT BATTERY. The first song, aren’t content to play things straight. They utilise programmed ‘Rock Of Sand’, takes a bit of getting used to as singer/songwriter, Rich Austin’s slightly flat, beats and samples to good effect, summoning up the digi-blues baritone croon with warbly inflections combine stylings of Beck and beyond. Meanwhile, the cutely titled ‘Black to make him sound a little deranged. But once Dues’ introduces analogue keyboards and Britpop mores to land somewhere between Blur and Money Mark. Bristol BrouHaHa Double Bill - 2008 was a phenomenal year for Welsh comedy sensation Rhod Gilbert, truly cementing him as one of the leading comedy names in the UK. Since 2001, Lucy Porter has been a huge, sell-out hit at the Edinburgh Festival and on tour, with her distinctive, bouncy, feel-good style.

There’s always a philosophical element to her shows, and this new show will no doubt be as thought-provoking as previous offerings.

City Museum And Art Gallery, Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol, daily 10am to 5pm, free. Tel: 0117 922 3571. bristol-city.gov. uk/museums So shrouded in secrecy was Banksy’s largest project to date that most of the museum’s staff were unaware of it until it was up on Friday.

Many of the works have never been seen on UK shores, but as with much of the graffiti artist’s work, its caustic social and political comment is steeped in humor. The reception area of the museum, transformed by a burntout ice cream van with a sorry-sounding jingle and deflated tyres, symbolises – in Banksy’s eyes – a society gone to pot. With Banksy fakes dotted amid the museum’s classic relics, Bristol’s wayward scamp delights in subverting the mundane.

Drag Me To Hell (15)

1 – 3 Jul: The Cube Microplex, Bristol, 0117 907 4190, microplex.cubecinema.com Dir: Sam Raimi, starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long USA/2009/99 mins Sam Raimi’s highly anticipated return to horror doesn’t disappoint. Alison Lohman is the finance clerk who turns down a request for a loan from an old gypsy woman and is subsequently cursed by the spirit of an ancient demon. Evil Dead fans shouldn’t pre-judge the film on it’s 15 certificate.

There are plenty of gross out moments and Raimi’s skill gets old fashioned scares from what isn’t seen. It’s a rollercoaster ride, from the intense opening scene to the shocking finale, you’ll squirm, shriek and laugh out loud. Drag Me To Hell? It’s more like Drag Me to the Toilet because this is so scary I almost wet myself.

One to watch.

The Cheri of the title is Fred, a pretty, vain young man, the son of wealthy former courtesan Madame Peloux (Kathy Bates) who falls in love with an older woman, Lea (Pfeiffer). They are forced to part when his mother arranges a marriage, partly out of spite, partly out of avarice, with a young innocent with a significant dowry. Easy on the eye, playful at times, there’s an air of Oscar Wilde as characters trade in polite put-downs and subtle one-upmanship. This is costume drama at its best.

Expect unbelievable effects and a very unbelievable storyline, but great comedy from the supremely talented Ben Stiller and Ricky Gervais.

This is a chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members during their time at Starfleet Academy. The cast features hot Brit-talent Simon Pegg as Scotty and fresh from his turn as Sylar in Heroes, Zachary Quinto plays Spock. The effects are out of this world, and this reinvention of the Star Trek franchise is a thrill ride at warp speed.

Scrat, a prehistoric squirrel, is still trying to grab the ever-elusive nut and find true love. Sid the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some dinosaur eggs and getting lost in an underground world. The rest of gang – Diego, the sabre-toothed tiger, and Manny and Ellie, the wooly mammoths, go on a rescue mission to find Sid and return the eggs to their rightful owner. Although this series is getting a bit long in the sabre-tooth, this sequel should provide plenty of laughs and some exciting computer animation.

Newport, 01633 656 757, newport.gov.uk Dir: Tom Hooper, starring Michael Sheen, Colm Meaney, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall UK/2009/97 mins Peter Morgan’s (Frost/Nixon) brilliant adaptation of David Pace’s novel tells the confrontational and darkly humourous story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44-day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football in the 1970’s, Leeds United.

Previously managed by his bitter rival, Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football. This was anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Clough, who had success building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor (Spall). A must watch for anyone who loves footy.

Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone, from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard), to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. Expect spectacular shoot-outs and stand-out performances from Depp and Bale.

USA/2008/90mins The famous boxer and ear chewer stars in his own biographical account of a man who was just as explosive outside the ring as he was inside it.

The film charts Tyson from his earliest memories to his present dilemmas.

It also tackles the issues of race and class that dominated the former Heavy Weight Champions life. Over an hour of original footage complements archive footage of some of his greatest bouts in the ring. This film is a fascinating insight into the life and times of one of the sports most controversial and popular figures.
