Contents Photography by Kirstin Prisk “I unwittingly took retirement between the ages of 14 – 26 when I surfed, with little thought about anything else. During this time I was lucky enough to have the backing of my family, and surf giant, Quiksilver who enabled me to follow my passion for wave riding across the globe. Of course, you can’t be a surfbum forever and I came to the conclusion I was in deep shit at the age of 26. Luckily about this time I became passionate about image making and I went on to complete a BA (Hons) in Photography & Digital Imaging, achieving 2:1,” says Kirstin, who studied at Truro College and Plymouth College of Art and Design. These days he works as a freelance photographer, out of his studio in Redruth, covering everything from snowboarding and surfing through to weddings. His work is inspired by time, emotion, the perfectly imperfect, life and how people live. Sounds good to us. Check out Kirstin’s work at www.kirstinprisk.co.uk

Forever Wonkey Keeping a club night legendary for a whole decade takes more than branded baked beans and a battered Robin Reliant. Rachael D’Cruze talkes to Aldo Vanucci, the giraffe loving dj and club promoter who keeps Plymouth’s infamous Wonkeylegs club night constantly filled to capacity.

8|

magazine

It was so long ago we can hardly remember, but are we right in thinking Wonkeylegs was originally started by a guy called Barney back in the early noughties, and took place at the Quay Club in Plymouth, which is now called Wow? How did you get involved? Yeah, Barney Logic and Lee from the Quay Club started the night in 2001, the original concept was an alternative to what student nights were at the time (Chesney Hawkes and Baywatch). The idea being to play classic tunes from soul, funk, house, hip hop, reggae, big beat and drum n bass. I played at a few of the Mondays in that first year. Then Barney moved to London. but passed the Wonkey baton to me. I was moving down from London and for me it was an opportunity to dj and promote a venue that everyone knew. I gave it my all and it went from being a night ticking over with a hundred regulars in three months to be capacity pretty much every week. The other resident at the time was Bloodshot and we would have Barney guest now and then, as well as most of the local djs. The night very quickly turned into a drum n bass and hip hop night as that’s all anyone ever asked for, the style of the night was and still is driven by what our regulars want, combined with my style of djing, which is always the vocal, singalong and party end of any genre.

www.247magazine.co.uk

How do you think the club environment has changed during the life of Wonkeylegs and how have you kept the night fresh enough to meet the changes? Up until this year we’ve always been an alternative to what else was available, the bigger clubs cater to the mainstream and we always appealed to the more knowledgeable people, while remaining accessible - we don’t play end to end new tunes or dirty underground joints - we cater to people who know and love underground music but don’t necessarily keep up with it like djs and obsessives do. In 2010 though, all the other student nights played dubstep, drum n bass and house, a large part of that is down to how big dubstep is right now. As for the freshness, I’m not sure that’s the right word as we have evolved with music tastes but you can still hear a lot of the same tunes we played back in 2002, and I’m not shy to admit the real heads sometimes know which song is coming next! So, you like dubstep? I do now, I didn’t when it first started, I thought it was awful, it took our guest djs playing some and then loads of our regulars asking for specific tunes for me to try it, now you hear about half the night is dubstep. When I first started playing it, someone would ask for a tune and I’d say “I’ll play it but you do know dubstep is rubbish, don’t you?”

“Apparently, the giraffe is the Brad Pitt of the animal world”

What’s the wonkey’est thing to have happened at Wonkeylegs? There has been many. Guys jumping in the sea outside the Quay club in the height of winter is up there near the top and we once did Wonkeylegs on Ice, which was really funny. This year a regular asked for the logo so he could get a tattoo done! Everyone thought I should, but I politely said no - if he’d had it done I’d have felt I had to keep the night going forever. What’s the secret of a good Wonkey night? It’s the people that come to it, every club night is based on the crowd, get the wrong people in and it changes the atmosphere, not enough and it doesn’t feel the same. The right dj helps though. I’m alright but I’m only Plymouths 14th best, imagine if we had one of the other 13… If you weren’t a DJ and club promoter would you work in a zoo, attending to giraffes? Recently, I’ve had lots of conversations about what is a more appropriate job for someone my age. Norman said it’s better than working for a living. Biff said as long as I’m still on the way up I should continue. Up until the age of 17 I just wanted to be a Butlins Red Coat but when my hopes and dreams were dashed I discovered clubbing, that was 1987 and I’ve done nothing else since. For now, me and Wonkelegs are going nowhere.

Aldo’s well known for the dropping his Remix, Sign or Drop question on big name interviewee’s (Leftfield said they’d sign the cast of Glee and D’n’B Rinseout promoter revealed he had a soft spot for Take That...), so we thought we’d return the favour.

Is it true you tried to get a live Giraffe out to promo the night around the time of the Students returning for Freshers in September? What stopped you? Ha! Yeah that’s true, what stopped me was money. I had a budget of what I spend on Wonkeys over the first term and I have a connect who got me the number of a guy who supplies animals for films “Any animal you want, he can get you,” so I rang him, gave him the date, how many hours, then he asks which animal, then there’s a sharp intake of breath. Apparently, the giraffe is the Brad Pitt of the animal world as it’s so delicate and transporting it is a real nightmare. He could do it but the cost was fifteen times my budget. We’ve seen your Wonkey Rock (ooo er), branded Baked Beans, sweets, the Wonkey Robin Reliant (Dell boy Only Fools and Horses style) - what’s next on your promo mission? We had a new one planned and ready to go, I told a fair few people about it too but there was some behind closed doors goings on with the venue and so I held it back and put on Doorly for £2 instead, it’s a cracking idea so I’ll just use it again later! When we started Wonkeylegs, I was told specifically not to fly poster because while the council wouldn’t come down on big companies, they would on an independent club. So I had to box clever, not bigger, and did lots of things other club nights hadn’t, they might have more money that me but; ‘you can pay for school but you can’t buy class.’

www.247magazine.co.uk

Remix, Sign or Drop – Dido, Billy Joel, Rick Astley. Jesus what a line up, I’d sign all of ‘em. Remix Dido, Sign Billy Joel Drop Rick Astley. My missus maintains I used to look and still dance like Rick Astley, I have a soft spot for Dido, I could listen to her all day long and “Vienna” by Billy Joel is up there as an all time Aldo at home track, I also love to play “Only the good die young” in my bar sets, has to be the right crowd though. Formally known as LetterstoLeaders, the Exeter based band have a new name, a new line-up and a new sound. We catch up with Frontman, Will, and Guitarist, Sam, to talk about their new single, cider, and recording parts of their album in the same place that Queen came up with Bohemian Rhapsody. Electric Skies, three quarters of which are born and bred Devon’s capital city, Exeter, are true ambassadors of the South West. Will loves the scenery, wide open spaces and fresh air, while Sam loves the fact he’s ten minutes from the beach and ten minutes from town; ideal. It seems the South West is also the perfect location for making lots of noise, as Will explains; “We get to practise next to a field and no-one gets annoyed.”

The Truths are gaining major adulation for their live performances, resulting in The Guardian to not spare the expletives and describe them as “fucking amazing.” The Cornwall-based musicians have recently released their powerful debut album, Above All, which is beginning to make noise beyond the moors of Bodmin. Anthony Neale (vocals) also plies his trade as a mixer having worked with Radiohead and other musical heavyweights. Joe Taylor (guitars) studied at Truro College and gained relative success with his previous band, Rooster. They both met to discuss their work ethic, the decline of the music industry and why you should never eat a pasty.

“I’m more surprised that we’re not getting more plaudits…our plan is to not follow other bands but instead pave our own way in the music industry” Upon meeting the front man of the band, and having the piss taken out of me when I asked for a “dash” of milk in my brew - I knew this guy had more words than his lyrics. “Being in a band has been a vision of mine since I was eight. Music is now on the fringes of culture unlike the 50s, 60s, and 70s where music was the driving force of culture. Now, thanks to various things including people like Simon Cowell, music has been turned into some sort of game show. Cowell just gets pub singers and turns them into pop stars and watches them spin out of control – it’s absolutely sickening to me.

“It doesn’t apply to all musicians in the industry, take Radiohead for example, they have broke through and at the same time offered something different to music fans. ”He insists the glass isn’t always half empty though: “The other side of it is that it’s amazing to play in a band in front of loads of people, and have a good time,” he laughs and with it raises the sheet of despair hanging over their studio in Penryn. When asked about the recent comments by national papers the band’s singer keeps stern. “I’m more surprised that we’re not getting more plaudits…our plan is to not follow other bands but instead pave our own way in the music industry.” Once you’ve listened to their album it comes as no surprise to what music influences them. “I love the music of the 60s and 70s. Look at this way I’m always going to go back to a Doors album, I don’t think I’ve ever gone back to a Blur album. Funk, Motown that sort of stuff. It would be good to hear more groove back in modern music.” The topic brings Joe Taylor into the argument and why he believes music is like it is: “I mean if you can’t play your instrument past the spindley guitar, you don’t have a wealth of music you can dip into to play something different. I mean how many albums have you heard where every song sounds the same? We’re doing something different.” The Truths are: Anthony Neale (vocals), Joe Taylor (guitar), James Goddard (bass), Simon Ward-Wilson (keyboard) & Dave Neale (drums) To buy the album go to iTunes, or to see what the band are up to slap this into a browser - www.myspace.com/thetruthsband Interview: Ben Perks www.247magazine.co.uk

Penzance five-piece Broken have been playing a face-melting blend of hard rock riffage for the best part of three years now. Following a spate of gigs and their collaboration with Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell, they are finally getting ready to take the next step with their debut album. Rob Sleigh caught up with Broken guitarist and co-founding member Adam Floyd… Shortly after finishing university, Adam and vocalist Gwil Jones, both former members of RawDeal, joined forces with Keith Parker and Ben Richardson of local metallers Stryken. Completing the line-up with bass player Rach Pellowe, Broken was born and the band immediately set out to start work on their first album. “It started as just a jamming project - a chance for us to get together and just enjoy playing again. We quickly realised that we had something special and quite cool – something that people would enjoy.”

actually enjoy what you believe in. You can let people into the tight-knit group and, for the time that you’re on stage, they’re your best friends.”

Although they have all played in various rock bands in the past, their influences and backgrounds are surprisingly diverse. Drummer Ben Richardson, for example, works with a Cornwallbased dance company. Adam describes Broken’s music as “the best parts of Old School infused with modern rock.” He goes on to explain that the different influences, which range from classic metal like Iron Maiden to hardcore bands like Rise Against, have helped to shape the Broken sound: “The writing process that we go through is a really collective experience. Somebody might bring a riff and we just take it from there. We all have a say in what happens.”

Adam recalls another treat that the band were fortunate enough to experience, when Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell joined them in the studio: “On the track ‘Low’, Phil’s laid down a guitar solo for us, which has just been unreal. It’s difficult to do anything with the song because every time it gets to the solo, we just sit and giggle because it’s just so cool. The only bummer is that, when we play it live, I’m lumbered with playing the solo [Laughs].”

Although the original plan had been to write and record their album, Adam explains how the urge to get out and play to a live audience soon became too much to bear: “The ambition became to have a good time and play to people who like rock’n’roll. We had wanted to do an album and then take it out, but we couldn’t wait any longer. We just wanted to get out and play.” This gave Broken a chance to work on their reputation as a live band at venues such as Penzance’s Studio Bar. “You get a chance to misbehave and so do the crowd. It’s fantastic to see that people

One of the band’s favourite shows so far was at Party in the Park on the August bank holiday weekend at Trereife House. “That was a really good gig and there were loads of other cool bands, so there was a real party atmosphere. It was good to get out and meet all the guys that play on the circuit round here.”

After all the recent excitement, Broken are now keen to crack on with work on their first record. “We’ve had this initial surge of gigs and now we want to get our heads focused to finish the album. It’s a long process and we’re learning everyday. The biggest goal for us in the immediate future is to get the album out there and to keep playing, locally and further afield.”

How many people do you know who’ve danced on tables with Cyndi Lauper and are referred to as “Kate Bush on crack”? We only know one: Rosie Vanier, formerly of Cornish electro-poppers, Rosie and the Goldbug. The trio broke out of the South West, broke up, and now their singer, Rosie, is going it alone with a new EP. Here, in this month’s instalment of the Presspack Sessions, the lady from Bodmin talks to Joe Biddle about her beginnings, inspirations and Ms Lauper. We know you’ve been busy in the studio but tell us about your background, as Rosie in Rosie and the Goldbug and how everything started for you? That was my apprenticeship. It first started in a band called Powder Strip, when I was at university. I moved back from London - I’d been doing classical music, and I was dying to make some noise! I did that for a year and then I started Rosie and the Goldbug - I loved the concept of the name. We got a lot of interest very quickly, and I was part of that whole scene with Marina and the Diamonds and Florence and the Machine, about three years ago. I got a lot of industry experience and got flown all over the place. I guess the best part of that was doing a European tour with Cyndi Lauper.

Are there any quotes that people have said about you over the years, that you love or hate? I think “Kate Bush on crack” is my favourite, and about as accurate as you can get. I mean, I’m very calm today, but I can get very hyperactive. I think my manager must have kept the really bad quotes from me!

Wanna tell us a bit more about Cyndi Lauper and what she’s like? She is wonderful, and you can see why she is the star she is: she has the star quality. She’s an inspiration as well: I noticed similar qualities in her voice and mine. I was a massive fan already, so I was a bit star-struck when I met her.

You’re known for your crazy style of piano playing. Do you play anything else? Over the years I’ve been collecting allsorts of quirky vintage instruments. On my new EP, I’ve got this Farfisa piano organ. I’ve also played autoharp and some African instruments.

You’re quite quirky yourself: a star in delivery. Yes, I can’t help that. I think that’s coming from Bodmin Moor! So, you kept in touch with Cyndi? Yes, I’m very lucky to have her in my life, and she’s been very supportive. One of the highlights was going to an after-show party with her, in a club in Oslo. They set up a VIP area for us, and we were drinking Crystal and dancing on the tables! www.247magazine.co.uk

Where do you draw your lyrical inspirations? From a lot of sad places. When I was growing up, I was surrounded by a lot of tragedy and deaths, and that had an impact on my life. It might sound unfortunate, but that’s where I get a lot of my inspiration from. Where my songs come from; that’s my dark side. I don’t do boyfriend and girlfriend lyrics.

OK, now it’s time for the gratuitous plug section! I have an EP coming out before Christmas, called EP One. It’s my first release as a solo artist, on my own label My Vanwa Records. I will be touring next year, dates to be confirmed. I also have a website that’s currently being worked on. www.rosievanier.com / www.myspace.com/rosievanier magazine | 15

Absolute Dissent They were post-punk trailblazers in the early ‘80s only to lose their standing over the next two decades. But with the benefit of hindsight, postmodern intervention and Dave Grohl, they’re now back on the radar and, like Gary Numan, more loved than ever. ‘Absolute Dissent’ starts out like quintessential KJ, with foreboding riffage and Jaz Coleman’s reinvigorated regimental growl. It’s pretty impressive. When ‘The Great Cull’ follows suit, you begin to realise that this is the sound of a band who have totally rediscovered their tempestuous, tormented muse. Maybe it’s the vacuum caused by a thousand identi-kit post-posthardcore bands or maybe it’s staving off retirement, but it works a treat and that’s all that matters.

Social Distortion

Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes (Epitaph)

Long before The Gaslight Anthem started feasting upon Bruce Springsteen’s tagnuts, Social Distortion were taking the blue collar struggle to all the young punks with unbridled, tattooed zeal. Fast-forward 30 years and conscientious bruiser, Mike Ness, is back with his band of not-so-merry men but, alas, someone forgot to pack the memorable tunes. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the bluesy thrust of ‘Machine Gun Blues’ or the Stones-esque swagger of ‘California (Hustle and Flow)’, it’s just that the punk rock survivor shtick tends to wear thin when the songs fail to connect. Let’s be honest, anybody could write a Social Distortion album, especially this one.

None More Black Icons

(Fat Wreck Chords) Kid Dynamite went their separate ways. Boo fucking hoo. The hardcore backpackers got Paint It Black, the rock’n’roll disciples got None More Black. If it means more punky-tonk gems like ‘StillsSternLange&Norris’ or fightalong doo-wop rockathons like ‘Here Comes Devereux’, then viva la separación. Of course, NMB know when and how to punk it up (‘I’m Warning You With Peace & Love’) but they do it in such a way as to confound expectations with unusual harmonies, Paversesque charm and lots of heart. If the idea of Billy Joel dipping his wick in Screw 32 floats your boat, then ‘Icons’ will put a hefty grin on your phizog and a welcome shiver in those old bones.

The Decemberists The King Is Dead

(Capitol) Country lore runs so rampant and righteous through The Decemberists that it’s hard to imagine them without picturing a mutton-chopped Gram Parsons running naked through a cornfield. Not ones to fuck with the ‘60s template, Colin Meloy and co take us on another journey through the all-strumming, soul-crooning yesterworld of the American folk tradition. Michael Stipe and Bob Dylan wish they had the wherewithal to write a song as affecting as ‘Down By the Water’; the Steeley Span-ish ‘Rox in the Box’ is a copper-mining jig for the Green Man generation; while ‘January Hymn’ proffers folksy beauty to accompany the bittersweetest of Gilmore Girls scenarios. Really quite wonderful.

magazine

Something about Faith Faith Evans is the first lady of R&B, no doubt, long before urban music was mainstream Faith Evans was A list, best known on these shores for what Fatman Scoop did to her tune as well as once being Mrs Notorious BIG. When she was signed to Bad Boy she did exactly what Mary J Blige did, big hip hop numbers with great melodies that broke clubs and radio. This is a great album, but it could have been awesome. Faith can sing and this album has some classic melodies and songs, the only slight hindrance is the producers, slightly lacklustre almost library tracks; even when she rides Biggie’s “Everyday Struggle”.

Donell Jones Lyrics

(E1 Entertainment) Another hot name for yesteryear but a slightly different approach. Whereas Faith went with a whole host of names to try and collaborate a great album, Donell, best known for “you know what’s up” with Lisa Left Eye Lopez from TLC, has produced almost all of this himself. Not usually something that pays off unless you are Timbaland etc, but in this case a brilliant move. Whilst The hooks and melodies are not quite as good as Faith’s the overall feel of the songs and album as a whole is brilliant. This won’t be anywhere near as large as his previous albums because the game has changed but for those of you who know your r’n’b this is a must.

Sara Mitra April Song

Impossible Ark Records This album has a lot to live up to, from the same label that brought out the Jeb Loy Nichols (one of my favourite albums in the last few years). This album while completely different musically, comes with the same heartfelt and musically outstanding place. Nowadays you hear about these long lost jazz classics that are quality but take 20-30 years to become known, let’s not let this happen with Sara. An amazing jazz album that’s accessible and has quality vocals throughout, the fact that she comes from Essex is even more astonishing, how come I never met anyone as talented as here when I was there? An album worth checking whether you like jazz or just want to be swept away.

Konfectionists No Artificial Flavours (Lench Mob records)

I’m usually up on my hip hop, so props to Lord Louis for hipping me to these cats. It’s their second and I have no idea whether they’ve stepped up on this or gone backwards, but this album would be hard to beat. Fine beats, some with wicked soul samples by Rola, tight flows by Gee Swift and Project Cee. You’ll hear no jiggy flows here so if you like your hip hop based in this country then you should check this album, in a time when so many UK hip hops are basing their productions in the pop market this shows that you can be true to the game and make an album the masses would feel.

Cherry Overdrive Go Prime Time, Honey (Heptown Records)

Second album for the all-girl garage rock & roll band from Copenhagen. Opening song, Count Me In suggests that you could be in for a stomping, charged up riff-laden ride, but that’s wishful thinking. What holds Cherry Overdrive back is a lack of rawness. Lighter moments are all good and well, but this album would have worked better overall, if they had gone for a grittier production, to do justice to their garage credentials. The singer’s voice just sounds too daytime radio-friendly and the guitars are too damn clean. Next time: less cherry, more overdrive please.

Engineers

In Praise of More (K Scope)

Album number three from the Manchester/York/ London dream-weavers, with the addition of new member, the German electronica heavyweight, Ulrich Schnauss. Let’s not tag them with the lazy genre word “shoegaze”- it’s too limiting. Dreamy, spacey or ambient pop: that just about sums up the nine atmospheric songs here. Engineers use landscapes of sound to create a hazy mood, that’s dripping with texture. There’s also room for variation: the pace is increased with the bleepy, electronica-style title track, which balances out the drifty psychedelia of much of the set. And on Subtroper, they rock it slow. REAL slow. There’s also an instrumentals disc of the entire album, if you just want to get off on the atmosphere.

Spokes

Everyone I Ever Met (Counter Records)

The Spokes hail from Preston and Manchester, and they fit roughly into the style donned by the likes of Broken Records or Young Republic. Everyone I Ever Met is a happy ménage à trois between post-rock, psychedelia and folk, which is at its best on Give It Up To The Night. There are dramatic instrumental build-ups and crescendos (Peace Rocket) as well as softlysung folk ballads (Sun it Never Comes). Big emphasis on skilful songwriting, and the use of layers of sound throughout is guaranteed to take the listener on a bit of an emotional journey, if you will pardon the cliché.

Kris Needs Presents Dirty Water: The Birth of Punk Attitude (Year Zero) Enter Kris Needs: journalist, DJ, mate of Primal Scream (amongst others) and general rock & roll guy. He’s had a colourful life hanging out with some iconic people, and here he’s picked more than thirty songs on two discs, cantering mainly on ballsy & gutsy cuts from the ‘50s to the ‘70s. Many of us have already been well versed on the history of punk rock and the lineage of bands that helped to inspire, influence and shape it. Those who haven’t can start here. Highlights: sexy ‘60s garage punk from The Standells and The Seeds, punk rock blueprint from New York Dolls and classic reggae from Culture. And there’s more. Loads more.

Malditos Bass Star Dos! (Mental Machine Muzik)

From their signing to iBreak Records in late 2008, these guys have stormed their way through firmly cementing their name in the world of Breaks. This debut album released on their own label ‘Mental Machine Muzik’ is made up of 10 new tracks alongside 8 tracks published on iBreaks. This will take them even further up the ladder, paving the way for big things ahead. Festival ravers and general breaks lovers will be all over this like a rash. If you just like to dip your toe into a bit of breaks every now and then or if you are a fully fledged breaks fan, this album will give you the fill you need.

Dub from Atlantis A Decade In Dub

(Rengrang Records) Wholesome Dub for the masses from these guys. Starts off nicely with a ‘Heard It On The Frontline’ featuring Celestine and John Pearce. A nice take on 60’s classic ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’ which became Marvin Gaye’s signature tune. Enough to get you swinging nicely into the groove of the album. This is a great collection of Dub including a remix of Celetine’s ‘Deeper Dub’ which shows off her smooth flowing vocal talent. This will appeal to a vast range of people especially if they haven’t got any Dub in their collection!

Groove Armada White Light

(Cooking Vinyl)

Groove Armada’s ‘Black Light’ was a good album but not quite up there with some of the back catalogue. ‘White Light’ is in tune with a more upbeat approach to the eight tracks that have been reworked from the previous album. The boys have not failed to please with this one. On top of the eight tracks taken from ‘Black Light’, you also have the highly demanded ‘History’ Love Remix. Any fan of Groove Armada’s past releases will want a copy of this in their collection. It picks up from the more chilled vibe of ‘Black Light’ showcasing more of the dance element that they posses. The album also features Will Young, Fenech Soler, Nick Littlemore, Jessica Larrabee, and Saint saviour who graces the ‘Love Remix’ of ‘History’.

Danny Byrd Rave Digger

(Hospital Records)

The Second album from the Byrd man, highly anticipated and for good reason! Danny Byrd is getting airplay all over the airwaves with some of the tunes from this album such as ‘Ill Behaviour’, ‘Sweet Harmony’ ft Liquid and more recently ‘We can have it all’. He showcases his quality production as well as his diversity with dance-floor bangers, jungle style and more vocal based tunes. You will pick up on some hip hop influences in ‘Judgement Day’ and some old skool rave vibes with ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Planet Earth’ which go down nicely alongside quirky news flash style intro’s. Will be keeping this one in the record bag for sure! Definitely recommend to all lovers of dance music. Out now.

Sickwax

www.myspace.com/sickwax All-scratching, dubtastic sextet from Bristol, Sickwax, take their brassy, street-sculpted fare from the halcyon days of funk-inspired hip-hop but they don’t really take the genre anywhere special. Indeed, many before them have ventured into this heavily-populated territory only to move on to find their own voice. Released in conjunction with Uberphonic Records, ‘Skint Prestige’ reveals moments of jazzy dexterity during ‘Hospital Gloss’, and the confident ‘Dubington’ no doubt fills dancefloors but the rapping lets the side down, showing no real vestige of verbal inventiveness. At least, not the sort that would make you want to clutch them to your bosom. Great band, not so great songs.

Citadel

www.myspace.com/citadeltip Plymouth hardcore newbies, Citadel, haven’t wasted any time getting their noise out there in the public domain. The band’s debut demo, lovingly housed in a crude but effective homemade sleeve, runs rampant with mid-paced hardcore thuggery, sand-papered vocal cords and truck-loads of angsty frownage. All eight songs tend to stay in the same ballpark, sonically and emotionally, but if it works for Sick Of It All, chuck yourself in. The DIY production lends it a kind of authenticity that parallels the first wave of crossover bands but the relentless calls for a united, no-guts-no-glory kind of ‘brotherhood’ begs the question: is there a place for sisterhood in Citadel’s hardcore utopia? One hopes so.

National Pastime

www.myspace.com/nationalpastime Keen protagonists of Exeter’s lo-fi sub-pop coterie, National Pastime’s new platter, ‘Bookmarks’, sees the quartet adhere to their softly enforced remit of Field Mice-riven melodies with a wilfully outcast status. They’re certainly not ones for displaying typical male pride, given that you can’t hear any sonic semblance of sweat in these songs. The gentle melancholic thrum of ‘Geneva’, the Belle & Sebastian bounce of ‘Consolation Prize’ and ‘Fine Line’’s marshmallow-Buzzcocks hue all add up to a band who relish the opportunity to remind us that not every late-‘80s teenage schoolboy was queuing up to join the rugby team or ambush unwitting kids from other schools.

Art is Hard Records

www.artishardrecords.co.uk Art Is Hard Records release a split 7” this month, and it’s a (xmas) cracker. Indeed, it comes with some stocking fillers – an original print, a digital EP and a zine – which is very apt. Exeter’s New Years Evil enter the fray with a nod to Joy Division’s post-punk edginess and a wink to Killing Joke’s percussive menace. ‘Echo Canyon’ positively reeks of industrial angst, while the atonal ‘Shining Path’ heads leftfield for a bit of Jesus & Mary Chainage. Falmouth’s The Black Tambourines opt for a lush, widescreen sound with zinging echo, surf guitars and ‘50s romanticism, combined with a lovely shock of sharp-suited, new wave energy. A splendid mash-up.

Goan Dogs

www.myspace.com/goandogs I first caught Bristol’s Goan Dogs last month at a gig at The Croft and genuinely wondered where they’d been all my life; then I found out - this was their first ever live gig. It takes some bands years of gigging to fine-tune the haunting vocals, energetic drums and carve the overall cohesion which these guys nailed on their first attempt. With the underlying uplifting melancholy of Radiohead, the contemporary relevance and mature vocals of Beiruit and vivid lyrics which conjure up some eerie dark and twisted imagery, Goan Dogs follow in the footsteps of bands like Revere. This could be one Bristol band which breaks through the confines of the South West to gain the recognition they deserve.

Cavalry Bears

www.myspace.com/cavalrybears Bristol’s Cavalry bears sure are a talented bunch of guys. Singers Chris Levens and Michael Fox are both budding actors seen gracing the stage of many a play in Bristol and beyond and now they’ve joined forces to fuel their musical desires. Soft and gentle vocals soar high above the uplifting guitars and drums to create the most delightful indie tracks. With a compelling yet indistinguishable accent present in the track Rooftops, it has definite hints of Bellx1 and Haven about it. Summer’s Lease has a more contemporary feel to it, think Death Cab for Cutie. The joint vocal efforts compliment each other perfectly and the consistent guitar keeps the whole thing flowing like a beautiful ornate steam train.

www.myspace.com/ nancyofficialmusic Bristol’s proving it’s worth as a producer of a wide range of demo fodder in this month’s mag and not wanting to focus entirely on guitar based indie we checked out a newish popster by the name of *Nancy* who lists Pink, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry as her top myspace friends. Sadly she doesn’t sound much like this trio of superstars. You can see where she’s going with her styling but she ends up looking like a watered down (yet prettier) Lady Gaga. And she’s got the electro synth and produced vocal thing that Gaga has to a certain extent with the odd catchy riff but she sounds a lot more like 90s Kylie or Madonna – a little less Grrrr than Pink and Perry - like a cup of tea without the teabag.

Dead Star Sonics www.myspace.com/ deadstarsonics

I challenge anyone to stay still Dead Star Sonics. Their music has that constant energy which makes you want to head to a London club, covered in leather and glitter and jump around like some trendy motherfucker. It takes the best bits of Britpop and that godawful lull in the early Noughties and drags it into 2010 with a sniff of the New York underground arty scene about it. The comparison to Lou Reed/Iggy Pop/The Strokes is an easy one to make. However, in places the vocals (by Nicky Sonic) are hidden slightly by the vocoder effects and one wonders whether that’s a deliberate attempt at hiding some shaky vocals or showing off some techy production skills but it kinda works. magazine | 23

Hall, 01805 603201, www. beaford-arts.org.uk Dir: Tim Burton Starring: Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee & Johnny Depp 2010/ US/108 mins Disney’s updated live-action / CGI reimagining of the classic fairy tale seen through the warped vision of Tim Burton. Budding Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (AMELIA) stars as the young heroine who journeys down a rabbit hole and ends up in a bizarre fantasy land. A brilliant fantasy adventure to watch over the Christmas holidays. Black Death (15)

667080, www.exeterphoenix.org.uk Dir: Christopher Smith. Starring: Carice van Houten, David Warner, Sean Bean. Germany/UK 2010 101min Set in plague ridden England in 1348, a bishop’s representative Ulric rides to find out if a village has been spared the plague as it full of Satanists and pagans. Thos portrayal of medieval England is strong on menace, and the wild countryside with horrible peasants and religious nutters is really creepy. Action-packed and thought provoking, this is like a modern update of the Witchfinder General.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1(12a)

There’s no way we could deny you your dose of little Kevin McCallister in our Home Alone issue so we’ve secured FIVE Home Alone boxsets. Each boxset features not only the original (and in our opinion, the best) Home Alone and the sequal Home Alone: Lost In New York but also Home Alone 3 and 4 (yes we missed those the first time round too). They may not feature Macauley Culkin but they stick with the festive family comedy theme to bring you some light entertainment over the cold winter months. “Mam I’m eight years old, you think I’d be Home Alone? I don’t think so…”

Lourdes (U)

01326 313072 www.merlincinemas.co.uk Dir: Jessica Hausner Starring: Sylvie Testud, Lea Seydoux, & Gilette Barbier 2009/Austria/99 min Christine (Sylvie Testud) has been in a wheelchair for most of her life, and suffers from a sense of isolation. Desperately wanting to be a part of the world around her she acts up so she can be taken on a church tour to Lourdes. She is a sceptic, but still hopes for a miracle cure at the famous religious site. She will discover that the most important part of the journey is to believe in something, whether basic human kindness or divine intervention.

He now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore’s work and defeat the Dark Lord. But little hope remains for the Trio, and the rest of the Wizarding World, so everything they do must go as planned. Should be magical as always. 16 Dec: Falmouth Phoenix,

4-5 Dec: The Barn –

Dartington, 01803 847000, dartington.org/barn-cinema Dir: Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud Starring: Steve Carrell & Jason Segel 2010/US/94 min Four Lions tells the story of a group of British jihadists who have some rather odd ideas about glory in death. As their random interpretations of Islam clash, what emerges is a hopelessly funny farce. Four Lions is a comic tour de force and only Chris Morris, the man behind Brasseye and Nathan Barley, can make such a sensitive subject so funny.

Salander is hospitalized after the meeting with her father and later put on trial for murder. Mikael Blomkvist takes on the task of proving her innocence as he continues to uncover the reasons why Lisbeth has been treated so harshly by the Swedish authorities. Less action driven than the first two films, this is a satisfyingly tense conclusion to the story with the complicated legal investigations and gripping court finale keeping the tension high throughout.

The Social Network (12A)

1-2 Dec: 1 – 2 December The From one festive classic to another - Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a good old dose of Raymond Briggs’ Snowman and Father Chrismas and we’ve got two copies of each to give away. How can you forget the heartwrenching story of the little boy who makes friends with a Snowman and enjoys a magical night of ‘Walking In The Air’? Equally as poignant is Father Christmas; a tale about the big fella’s busiest night of the year and his quest for a post Christmas holiday.

Finally, if you like your Christmas a bit less twee - for all you horror fans we’ve bagged three copies of the slasher film, Black Christmas. As brutal in its violence as it is terrifying in its effect, Black Christmas is a true horror classic that left its mark on the genre for years to come, influencing such horror greats as Halloween and Scream. Now the 1974 classic is re-released for a new generation to once again experience the sheer terror of the original stalk-andslash masterpiece.

Flavel Arts Centre –Dartmouth, Devon, 01803 839530, www.flavel.org.uk Dir: David Fincher Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake and Rooney Mara 2010/US/TBC On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and creates a global social network and a revolution in communication, Facebook. It makes him the youngest billionaire in history, but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. Hopefully you won’t need poking to go and see this one.

‘I hope nobody chokes to death on their Xmas turkey but I do wish terrible acid indigestion upon all of you’

Nothing puts a big, goofy smile on my face more than a bunch of amiable New Yoricans dancing like Napolean Dynamite to Enya. Of course, DARWIN DEEZ’s talents don’t end there (Exeter Cavern, 20th Oct). The band’s quintessentially American indiepop whims are the stuff of NYC legend but it’s Mr Deez himself who garners most attention; looking genuinely humbled by the capacity crowd’s unbridled enthusiasm for his slightly awkward yet utterly beguiling persona. The singles, ‘Constellations’ and ‘Radar’, are received like old friends as fellow band members provide the wistful crypto-Strokes rhythms and boogie back-ups. He’s Darwin Deez and he loves to dance. Who could argue? Down in the depths of Kernow, the ad-hoc zombies were out in force as THE KAT MARSH BAND slinked onstage in their finest disguises (Ritz, Penzance, 30th Oct). Resplendent in She-Ra getup, Kat led us willingly through her female-dominated synth-pop garden with a couple well-executed, topical covers thrown in for added Woooh-factor. It may not scale the giddy heights of ‘…Van Occupanther’ but MIDLAKE’s ‘The Courage Of Others’ is still one of the best albums of 2010. And when those two towering achievements are jumbled up and rendered live, the results were nothing short of epiphanic (Lemon Grove, Exeter, 31st Oct). It all hinged on the Texan septet’s beautiful pastoral vocal harmonies, replicating the sound of CSNY frolicking with Fleetwood Mac in some woodcutter’s lumber camp in the late-19th century. ‘Roscoe’, ‘Head Home’ and ‘Branches’ were transformed into superlative displays of authentic, melancholic folk-rock, with pitch perfect vocals and exquisite duelling flutes. And with no less than four guitars battling for pole position, the band never lost sight of their melodic munificence. Astonishing. JASON LYTLE, who ably filled the opening slot, joined the ‘Lake for a loyal runthrough of his old band, Grandaddy’s ‘AM 180’; while ex-Czars JOHN GRANT – reborn and rebooted – cast some beautiful, Neil Sedaka-shaped images over gentle piano song. The scaled down, White Rabbit floor shows are going from strength to strength. This time ‘round, BROTHERHOOD OF THE LAKE brought the organic noise with a cracking new drummer in tow (Plymouth, 4th Nov). Rocking the telecasters, the Plymouth quintet seem to be expanding their sheet metal palette and it worked a treat. Club owner, Danny Boy James’ very own BEARFIGHT! played to their gnarly punk rock strengths despite an ill-advised cod-reggae interlude. The first prize belonged to DEAD POETS tonight. Their masterful, cleverly punctuated riffage revealed an absolute command of rhythmic dynamics – the sort of thing that separates great seething rock’n’roll bands from the good, especially when it’s played with this much self-belief. CYNICS is London boy, Giles Bidder, and Giles Bidder is a big fan of singalong punk songs. When he’s not competently covering Descendents and Defiance, Ohio gems, he’s bashing out heartfelt paeans to love, liquor and life on the road with the aid of a pretty semi-acoustic guitar and a great, Tom Gableesque voice (The Junction, Plymouth, 10th Nov). Ex-Living Daylights quartet, BAD IDEAS, were a pleasant surprise, taking the melodic clarity of Samiam and imbuing it with some organic, acoustic warmth. While Plymo-punk trio, THE BLOWOUTS, battled through an erratic sound with their early Green Day via The Living End credentials intact. Once the tedious, narcissistic metalcore thud of WHILE SHE SLEEPS had subsided it was time for Essex quintet, RINOA, to reign supreme with a staggering display of guitar-pummelling, throat-shredding, Envy-ous post-rock (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 12th Nov). Sadly, the band were calling it a day after this tour, which is a crying shame when you consider just how cathartic and contagious they were. Good luck in any future endeavours, lads. See-ya bye. Halloween Masked Ball

The sold out Halloween Masked Ball did indeed bring the Sandsifter back from the dead with all manner of ghoulish goings on. The masterminds behind Barnfest constructed a 15ft skull for party goers to enter through and from that moment on people where transported to the underworld. The music was incredible, the dancefloor was pumping, the bars were busy, and everyone had a ball. The event may be best summed up by headliners of the night Monarchy ‘’It was the night of the undead, the masked and the mental. We had an amazing time, a crowd collectively grinning from ear to ear, a marquee that was ready to take off, and a big sound system that went on well past the witching hour. We really couldn’t hope for more, and it was one of our best gigs to date.’’ Images: Anna Jay

Vampire Ball

This was a special fundraising night for local Bude surf legend, Skat-man, who at 43 was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. In the water he is known for his fluidity and natural ability, out of the water, Skat has been know for his vertical ginger bufoon and his punk slash fluro ‘get up’. He is also a dedicated drinker and party animal, so the fundraiser was a fitting show of support, with over 200 people partying with bands Forty Seasons, The Adventures of and The Sum of... Evo sorted out the sound, and did a spot on job of it too.
