CONTENTS IMAGERY: Nick Hilditch
Nick Hilditch has been working as a freelance illustrator, animator and writer in Bristol for the past few years. Nick draws inspiration from music and life; from nonsense, Picasso, Beefheart, Billy Childish, Nabokov, Melville, The Fall, Jeffrey Lewis and 1960s French Crime Films. One of his current projects and the one from which these illustrations were taken is Irka Firka, which takes inspirational Tweets and turns them into works of art in their own right. This is a joint project with Chris Bell. More info at www.irkafirka.com Website: www.nickhilditch.com Email: Nick@nickhilditch.com EDITORS LETTER:
I get a lot of stick from film freaks when they ask me what my favourite film is but fuck it, I have no shame - it’s Home Alone - a winning formula of humour and drama covered in a generous dusting of festive fun. Hell, it could be the reason I love this time of year so much and it most definitely is the reason I chose to spend Christmas in New York last year – freezing my ass off at a New York Giants game on Boxing Day (see pic). Anyhow, I wanted to share the love with you guys so embarked upon a Home Alone theme for the mag this month – with a hilarious fashion shoot, Home Alone inspired retail page and of course a DVD giveaway on the films page. If you’ve not seen it then you’re missing out BIG TIME, if you haven’t watched it since you were a kid then whack it on again you won’t be disappointed and if you watch it religiously every Christmas then good on you! Home Alone star Macauley Culkin may have grown into another tortured child star but this film, with its memorable quotes, has stood the test of time and will go down in history as one of the best family films of all time. Fact. Keep the change ya filthy animal… Laura Williams, Editor. www.247magazine.co.uk

King Of Paint Opens
Nestling in the space between Bristol’s bus station and the Broadmead shopping centre, King Of Paint (KOP) is the latest street art gallery space to open in Bristol. However, the owners say ”This is what Bristol’s graffiti and street art community have long been waiting for: a focal-point, in the heart of the city, just round the corner from the UK’s largest decriminalised painting zone, Stokes Croft”. As well as being a spray paint outlet and gallery space, it aims to be a hub for artists, run by artists, that is dedicated to giving the city’s scene a much-needed, designated space; to exhibit, meet, hang out, draw and paint. With dedicated outdoor painting spaces (including one all-weather wall), lit interior walls, spray paint on tap and tables where artists can sit and sketch over a cup of tea; KOP intends to be a space that is a hive of activity, buzzing with ideas, artwork and conversation; somewhere to rendezvous, plan and celebrate all that makes the Bristol scene unique. And with a team of artists with years of experience of teaching. Local legends Inkie, FLX, Mr.Jago, Haka, Rowdy (BC) and 3Dom, are all bringing some colour to King Of Paint’s extensive wall space in time for the opening (which will have happened by the time you read this) and the first solo show, featuring China Mike, has been booked-in for January. More info at www.kopaint.com

Bristol Folk Festival Returns In 2011 Bellowhead have been named as the first of three headline acts for next year’s revived Bristol Folk Festival – which returns to the city after a 32 year break. The extraordinary, multi award-winning 11 piece folk juggernaut will bring the three day Bank Holiday festival to a flamboyant finale on May Day (Sunday, May 1) at Colston Hall. Jon Boden said: “Bellowhead are delighted to have been asked to headline and programme the main stage music for May Day at the Bristol Folk Festival. With some festivals sadly disappearing in the current climate it’s great to see this one making a comeback after 32 years and we’ll be giving it all our support.” Co-organizer Jan Ayers added: “It’s a real coup to get one of the biggest – in every sense- names in acoustic music to top the bill on the final day of what will be a bumper ‘back again’ Bristol Folk Festival.” The “indoor” festival will take place in and around the revamped Colston Hall – with its stunning £20m new glass-fronted foyer – and has another hot property folk performer as its patron, the Mercury Prize nominee Seth Lakeman. Every Christmas you get a handful of money-thirsty musicians busting a gut to pen some festive jungles in a bid to cash in on the endless commercial opportunities from ads to compilation CDs. Sometimes it’s shit (think Christmas Time by The Darkness), sometimes it’s kooky (think Everything Will Be Cool This Christmas by Eels) and very occasionally it’s a stroke of genius (Last Christmas by Wham). We caught up with Goldie Lookin Chain’s Rhys (as he waited outside Asda for his missus) to talk about their attempt at a Christmas CD - A Goldie Lookin Christmas (The Fairytale of Newport) “It’s so soulful,” he said. “It’s just beautiful. We all wrote songs for it – there’s one Mystikal wrote about being naked on Christmas Day and one I did about being out of my head and not remembering a thing. Track one is meant to be called You’ll Never Be Alone at Christmas but I sent the wrong email and so it’s called You’ll Never Be Alone On Christmas Day. Then there’s Dubstep Christmas. I love dubstep. A lot of people go ‘what’s this rubbish?’ but I can’t get enough of the wobbly beats. Bristol’s good for it so is Haverfordwest in Wales. Bristol’s my third favourite place in the world. It goes LA, Paris then Bristol. We have done this album and thought we better slam some dates together so we’re doing the M4 corridor from the Cardiff Gate Services to Magor, Leigh Delaware, Chieveley then Reading Services. My favourite is Leigh Delaware – I was thinking of changing my name to that.” But no date in their beloved Newport this time round? Rhys went on: “We just did a massive, huge gig in Newport for the Ryder Cup. We put on our own golf tournament because a lot of the people from Newport didn’t get to go to the Ryder Cup. It was at the Caerleon Golf Club and there was about 6,000 people there give or take a few thousand. Tiger Woods was on the guestlist but he didn’t turn up.”
Then one morning I woke up singing this song as a response and so we went out and recorded a video. We ran out of batteries at about 3pm. The other guys were really quiet about it, they must’ve realised they made a terrible mistake by not being from Newport and went underground – like the A Team.” From one spoof to another and back to the GLC Christmas offering so just what is Christmas in Newport like? “Imagine a big nightclub with 16 people in it, full of disco smoke and smelling somewhere between curries, farts and pork,” said Rhys. “One of them is dancing and the DJ’s probably playing The Smiths. After that you will go and get chips and curry sauce and try and go to sleep but you won’t be able to because you’ll be too excited about Santa bringing you a love gun full of jizz.” Talking about the album, he added: “There’s a little bit of swearing but if your kids are under two they won’t have a clue what’s going on. I would recommend this as a gift to everyone. If you’ve got a Great Aunty with senile dementia she will love it. My top tip for Christmas is buy stuff for people that comes in a tin. I always like to have a theme. You can get everything in a tin nowadays, whisky, biscuits, Panatone, pants, tuna. And you can reuse the tin – it’s a gift that keeps on giving.” Goldie Lookin Chain play at at Bristol Fleece on December 11 and at Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff December 16. More info at www.youknowsit.co.uk
GLC are fast becoming the most high profile local celebrities and were recently asked to open a new branch of F.Hinds the jewellers. Rhys said: “The Jewellery store phoned us and said we have got all this gold and we need people to buy it cos the price of gold has gone up by 300 per cent in three years. I think they were really getting us in to see what gold we had then they realised it was all plastic. You can’t melt that down and make it into gold. Everyone’s doing it. In Newport, there’s a shop which sells food from around the world and there’s a sign saying it will buy gold.” GLC hit the headlines earlier this year when they posted a response on Youtube to the Youtube hit Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind) a spoof of Jay Z and Alicia Key’s number one single New York (Empire State of Mind). “When they did that Jay Z spoof, lots of people thought it was us,” Rhys said. “I thought it was weird – it’s obviously someone who likes us a lot and were doing a tribute to us. Steve wasn’t very happy, he smashed up his room with a cricket bat he wasn’t happy that they weren’t from Newport but Swindon or something.

CARDIFF Bionic NYE Code, Millennium Plaza, Wood Street, CF10 1GE 8pm – 6am £20, www.bionicevents.com New Year’s Eve in Cardiff wouldn’t be the same without the Bionic crew. For the past few years they’ve thrown some banging parties and this year is no exception. With a distinctive Hard House/Trance vibe, Bionic have secured some top notch DJs including Daniele Mondello & Express, Viviana, Dutch Master, Brian M McBunn, JTB & Chuck, Kidd Kaos, Swankie DJ & Kashie, Shock and The Force.
SWANSEA New Year’s Party Monkey Café, 13 Castle Street, Swansea, SA1 1JF 9pm, £5, www.monkeycafe.co.uk One of the cheaper New Year’s Eve events around but that doesn’t mean it’s pants. The Monkey Café in Swansea is hosting it’s regular New Year’s Eve party with DJs (Father Jared, Marchant and D&B from Active) on the ground floor playing party tunes, guilty pleasures and fun stuff. But if that ain’t your thing then the middle floor offers more hip-hop, breaks and dubstep.
ELSEWHERE IN THE SOUTH WEST
If there’s one thing we know how to do in the idyllic South West, it’s beaches, pubs and fancy dress. Combine the three for one night only (Dec 31) and we’ve got a winning formula. Whether it’s Exmouth or St Ives, Newquay or Weymouth there’s a seaside resort not too far away from you ripe for the picking. Expect some epic fancy dress efforts, plenty of late night bar action, DJs, live music and serious amounts of cider. I’ll see you there!
EDINBURGH
Let’s face it, if there’s one thing the Scots do better than us English folk (jury’s still out on whether it’s better than the Welsh contingent) it’s throw an epic New Year’s Eve party. In fact, it’s so much better than some of our lowly efforts down in the badlands of the West Country that they’ve even got their own name for it. Hogmanay in Edinburgh is one of those festival vibe parties where you inevitably wind up hugging every person who gets in your way, necking some Buckfast for medicinal purposes and dancing like a nutter to some top tunes as you prepare for a mass rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Seriously, you’d have to be on deaths door/majorly heartbroken or severely suicidal to not enjoy yourself at this, one of the biggest street parties in the world.
LONDON
After Edinburgh, one of the most popular places to flee to for New Year’s Eve is London. But rather than get shoe-horned into Trafalgar Square with a million pissed idiots you may want to head to one of the many, many musical-based events going down. And of all of these the All Tomorrow’s Parties shebang looks set to be the best. Featuring those US lo-fi grunge veterans Sonic Youth and the sound sensation that is Shellac the gig promises to be one of those legendary performances and what’s more you are unlikely to be surrounded by twats. If you’ve ever been to the ATP festivals you’ll know exactly what vibe to expect and if you haven’t, keep your eyes open for my review of the December ATP on www.247magazine.co.uk next month.

The Truths are gaining major adulation for their live performances, resulting in The Guardian to not spare the expletives and describe them as “fucking amazing.” The Cornwallbased musicians have recently released their powerful debut album, Above All, which is beginning to make noise beyond the moors of Bodmin. Anthony Neale (vocals) also plies his trade as a mixer having worked with Radiohead and other musical heavyweights. Joe Taylor (guitars) studied at Truro College and gained relative success with his previous band, Rooster. They both met to discuss their work ethic, the decline of the music industry and why you should never eat a pasty.
“I’m more surprised that we’re not getting more plaudits…our plan is to not follow other bands but instead pave our own way in the music industry” Upon meeting the front man of the band, and having the piss taken out of me when I asked for a “dash” of milk in my brew - I knew this guy had more words than his lyrics. “Being in a band has been a vision of mine since I was eight. Music is now on the fringes of culture unlike the 50s, 60s, and 70s where music was the driving force of culture. Now, thanks to various things including people like Simon Cowell, music has been turned into some sort of game show. Cowell just gets pub singers and turns them into pop stars and watches them spin out of control – it’s absolutely sickening to me.
www.247magazine.co.uk
“It doesn’t apply to all musicians in the industry, take Radiohead for example, they have broke through and at the same time offered something different to music fans. ”He insists the glass isn’t always half empty though: “The other side of it is that it’s amazing to play in a band in front of loads of people, and have a good time,” he laughs and with it raises the sheet of despair hanging over their studio in Penryn. When asked about the recent comments by national papers the band’s singer keeps stern. “I’m more surprised that we’re not getting more plaudits…our plan is to not follow other bands but instead pave our own way in the music industry.” Once you’ve listened to their album it comes as no surprise to what music influences them. “I love the music of the 60s and 70s. Look at this way I’m always going to go back to a Doors album, I don’t think I’ve ever gone back to a Blur album. Funk, Motown that sort of stuff. It would be good to hear more groove back in modern music.” The topic brings Joe Taylor into the argument and why he believes music is like it is: “I mean if you can’t play your instrument past the spindley guitar, you don’t have a wealth of music you can dip into to play something different. I mean how many albums have you heard where every song sounds the same? We’re doing something different.” The Truths are: Anthony Neale (vocals), Joe Taylor (guitar), James Goddard (bass), Simon Ward-Wilson (keyboard) & Dave Neale (drums) To buy the album go to iTunes, or to see what the band are up to slap this into a browser - www.myspace.com/thetruthsband Interview: Ben Perks

(Xtra Mile Recordings)
(Broken Horse)
Rock’n’Roll EP
Goodness only knows where Frank Turner finds time to record new material, what with endless tours and slots at most of the summer festivals but he does and the fruit of his latest labour is this five track EP. The opening track is Turner though and through, raw angsty vocals and lyrical ponderings of the modern condition though the whole premise on which it is based is a tad irritating, Turner spits: “Who’d have thought, something as simple as rock’n;roll would save us all’. Rhyming for the sake of rhyming maybe? Towards the end of the EP, Turner reigns in his shouty side to create a much gentler Arab Strap-esque sound in which his undeniable Home Counties accent has nowhere to hide.
Idlewild
100 Broken Windows (reissue)
(EMI) 2010 has become a bit of a milestone year for a lot of bands with no shortage of reunion tours/ reissues. This 10th Anniversary gem from Scottish rockers Idlewild is a welcome blast from the past - songs which dragged me through my teenage years returning with such resonance as if the past decade never happened. The first disc (the original album) showcases the catchy singles, including Roseability, which sum up the modern human condition perfectly with the enlightening line ‘You’ll always be dissatisfied’. Disc two features b-sides and demos, including alternative lyrics for Idea Track and Bronze Medal as well as the lush raw Hope Is Important-esque Alternative to College. These songs have stood the test of time both lyrically and musically and here’s hoping this reissue gets the recognition it deserves.
The Lives Of Charles Douglas Charles Douglas has written several screenplays, authored four novels, directed a film & at the age of 22 recorded this niche album. It’s an eccentric collection that concerns itself with subjects as diverse as girls, fast food, drugs & the death of The Notorious B.I.G. The whole album has a loose, first-take feel that calls to mind the spontaneity of Jonathan Richman’s solo records, whilst clearly indebted to Lou Reed. There is a simplicity and immediacy here that is difficult not to enjoy.
Jim Sullivan U.F.O.
(Light In The Attic)
This reissue does a fine job in making Sullivan’s work accessible to anyone in the know. It’s a warm, country-tinged effort that recalls the likes of Gene Clarke, The Band & Gram Parsons. Sullivan is in fine voice throughout and is backed by a strong supporting cast including stalwarts of Phil Spector’s Wrecking Crew. Songs like Rosey and Jerome evoke Glenn Campbell & Jimmy Webb’s work & sound like they could, with the right distribution, have propelled their singer to fame.
Bruce Springsteen The Promise (Columbia)
The release of Born To Run saw The Boss transform from struggling songwriter to American icon, seemingly overnight. It must have been incredibly frustrating then that legal wrangles Gabby Young with his former management prevented him from and Other Animals releasing a record for three years, the brooding Darkness On The Edge Of Town. Until now We’re All In This Together Springsteen’s productivity during the interim Gabby Young sure is one striking lady but does period has remained a well bootlegged secret she sound as good as she looks. Simple answer? amongst fans, here the extent of Springsteen’s Yes. Young manages to harness that energetic purple patch is officially unveiled. The Promise festival feel, that chaotic Carnyville vibe and the plays like a jukebox devoted to Springsteen’s romanticism of the Moulin Rouge and pull it out formative influences. It’s as if the success of the other side sounding like the most delightful Born To Run imbued him with the confidence Autumnal walk. It is clear that her distinctive and to flex his song writing chops. Here we have refreshingly tuneful voice is classically trained but nods to Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Elvis and that doesn’t make it old fashioned. Far from it; with Van Morrison; all the while sounding like nobody hints of Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes) in the slower but himself. title track ‘We’re All In This Together’ and the honeytoned Thea Gilmore in Too Young To Die, Gabby Dan Haywood Young could well be the trailblazer for female Dan Haywood’s New Hawks singer/songwriters in 2011. Sod Ellie Goulding and (Timbreland Recordings) Eliza Doolittle! There is something audacious about not only Phil Wilson releasing a 32 track triple album as your debut God Bless Jim Kennedy release but also declaring that it will be your final offering. For such a grand gesture to not (Creation Records) appear to be utter folly the material itself has I was a reluctant convert from cassettes to CDs and to be up to scratch; luckily the contents of … I’m still not 100% down with the whole MP3 thing New Hawks more than pass muster. Conceived so to receive a promo on vinyl is a definite win. It’s whilst Haywood spent 18 months getting back easy to forget just how compelling 80s indie was, to nature on the North coast of Scotland and so cue Phil Wilson (The June Brides) to remind brought to life by a steadily expanding band us. Here we have the insightful lyrics and beautiful over 5 years of touring, the album is a defiantly harmonies of early REM/the deep broodiness of individual, British exploration of nature and Echo&the Bunnymen/the substance of McCarthy. human relationships. Surely a future cult classic, There’s a bit of a heaven and hell situation for me its raw takes on folk and country are a timeless with a definite nod to the Manics (fans of The June delight. Brides) but slight sniffs of that jingly-jangly Beatles thing I hate. Can’t fault the second half of the album though, with The Sum Of and I Own It.

Malditos Bass Star Dos! (Mental Machine Muzik)
From their signing to iBreak Records in late 2008, these guys have stormed their way through firmly cementing their name in the world of Breaks. This debut album released on their own label ‘Mental Machine Muzik’ is made up of 10 new tracks alongside 8 tracks published on iBreaks. This will take them even further up the ladder, paving the way for big things ahead. Festival ravers and general breaks lovers will be all over this like a rash. If you just like to dip your toe into a bit of breaks every now and then or if you are a fully fledged breaks fan, this album will give you the fill you need.
Dub from Atlantis A Decade In Dub
(Rengrang Records) Wholesome Dub for the masses from these guys. Starts off nicely with a ‘Heard It On The Frontline’ featuring Celestine and John Pearce. A nice take on 60’s classic ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’ which became Marvin Gaye’s signature tune. Enough to get you swinging nicely into the groove of the album. This is a great collection of Dub including a remix of Celetine’s ‘Deeper Dub’ which shows off her smooth flowing vocal talent. This will appeal to a vast range of people especially if they haven’t got any Dub in their collection!
Groove Armada White Light
(Cooking Vinyl)
Groove Armada’s ‘Black Light’ was a good album but not quite up there with some of the back catalogue. ‘White Light’ is in tune with a more upbeat approach to the eight tracks that have been reworked from the previous album. The boys have not failed to please with this one. On top of the eight tracks taken from ‘Black Light’, you also have the highly demanded ‘History’ Love Remix. Any fan of Groove Armada’s past releases will want a copy of this in their collection. It picks up from the more chilled vibe of ‘Black Light’ showcasing more of the dance element that they possess. The album also features Will Young, Fenech Soler, Nick Littlemore, Jessica Larrabee, and Saint saviour who graces the ‘Love Remix’ of ‘History’.
Danny Byrd Rave Digger
(Hospital Records)
The Second album from the Byrd man, highly anticipated and for good reason! Danny Byrd is getting airplay all over the airwaves with some of the tunes from this album such as ‘Ill Behaviour’, ‘Sweet Harmony’ ft Liquid and more recently ‘We Can Have It All’. He showcases his quality production as well as his diversity with dance-floor bangers, jungle style and more vocal based tunes. You will pick up on some hip hop influences in ‘Judgement Day’ and some old skool rave vibes with ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Planet Earth’ which go down nicely alongside quirky news flash style intros. Will be keeping this one in the record bag for sure! Definitely recommend to all lovers of dance music. Out now.

Schema – A Day Of Small Victories Access Denied vs BSD – Ultimate/ Mineral Jason Sparks – Gangsters EP
Giving new and unsigned bands the once-over since the start of the Noughties.
Supplementary demo reviewer.
Aquasky feat The Ragga Twins / Living Legends
(Passsenger Records) It’s always nice to hear fresh Aquasky business, and with this release, they’ve managed to squeeze enough genres in to keep many a dancefloor stallwart happy. The title track Living Legends is just pure dancefloor happiness, borrowing a cheeky soul/funk break, it’s just sheer fun. Rennie Pilgrem has giving it a more tribal/uk funky remix which really works. The other track on this is Raggatron, which sounds like Optimus Prime violated a 909 and a 303! It’s got a really dark, urban feel to it. Sly and Pasco have given it a nice drum and bass re-rub, which has some nasty bassline business going on.
Jason Sparks Gangsters EP
(Botchit & Scarper Records) Jason Spark’s classic tune Gangsters has been given a celebrity footballer style roasting, having been stripped down and remixed into three different genres. Reso’s dubstep take on this tune, shows us that it works just as well at 140 BPM. There’s loads of stops, breaks and atmosphere. Sparks himself has given it a more up to date bassline house feel, I’d love to hear this tune just as the sun’s rising on a beach/ field. There’s loads of variation to the bassline in this too and he’s stayed true to his original tune. Flore’s contribution is pure breakbeat goodness - typical Flore with manic drum patterns and enough edgy teethy bass to munch through any dance floor.
601
White Off EP (Ape Music)
First up is The Wrongstars’ remix of Punch the Clown, which is a pretty heavy affair. It’s got some heavy dark side-chained bass which was supposed to feature on a previous Ape release, but they’ve finally released it into the wild on this EP. Ben and Lex’s RKSTDY is a rather stabby, punchy breakbeat tune which has some really nice dubstep elements in it. It is however unfortunately in White Off’s title track’s shadow. The Amen sample is well and truly back with a vengeance! This, the standout title track uses it as a great foundation, before dropping the funny vocal sample “It’s all gonna go white off - white off... pwoppa!”. A completely driven and fun breakbeat tune with bigger cajones than Danny Trejo!
Hedflux
Revolve / Rhythm Prism
(Broken Robot Recordings) Hedflux is well known for his heads down tech stompers, and this features his tell-tale crafting and attention to detail. Revolve has a nice psy-breaks feel to it, using a nice vocal sample in it - a similar vein to his tune Non Stop which. Revolve is a techy squirmy acidy pulser that needs to be listened to loud. The final track on this release is Rhythm Prism, which is much easier to listen to! It’s more breakbeat driven and it’s got more of a techno feel to it. With cloppy percussion and loads of sounds going on it drives through with enough funk to sink an anglo-french battle cruiser! Would’ve been great to see a couple more tracks on this release, maybe I should ask Santa? www.247magazine.co.uk
Sickwax
www.myspace.com/sickwax All-scratching, dubtastic sextet from Bristol, Sickwax, take their brassy, street-sculpted fare from the halcyon days of funk-inspired hip-hop but they don’t really take the genre anywhere special. Indeed, many before them have ventured into this heavily-populated territory only to move on to find their own voice. Released in conjunction with Uberphonic Records, ‘Skint Prestige’ reveals moments of jazzy dexterity during ‘Hospital Gloss’, and the confident ‘Dubington’ no doubt fills dancefloors but the rapping lets the side down, showing no real vestige of verbal inventiveness. At least, not the sort that would make you want to clutch them to your bosom. Great band, not so great songs.
Citadel
www.myspace.com/citadeltip Plymouth hardcore newbies, Citadel, haven’t wasted any time getting their noise out there in the public domain. The band’s debut demo, lovingly housed in a crude but effective homemade sleeve, runs rampant with mid-paced hardcore thuggery, sand-papered vocal chords and truck-loads of angsty frownage. All eight songs tend to stay in the same ballpark, sonically and emotionally, but if it works for Sick Of It All, chuck yourself in. The DIY production lends it a kind of authenticity that parallels the first wave of crossover bands but the relentless calls for a united, no-guts-no-glory kind of ‘brotherhood’ begs the question: is there a place for sisterhood in Citadel’s hardcore utopia? One hopes so.
National Pastime
www.myspace.com/nationalpastime Keen protagonists of Exeter’s lo-fi sub-pop coterie, National Pastime’s new platter, ‘Bookmarks’, sees the quartet adhere to their softly enforced remit of Field Mice-riven melodies with a wilfully outcast status. They’re certainly not ones for displaying typical male pride, given that you can’t hear any sonic semblance of sweat in these songs. The gentle melancholic thrum of ‘Geneva’, the Belle & Sebastian bounce of ‘Consolation Prize’ and ‘Fine Line’’s marshmallow-Buzzcocks hue all add up to a band who relish the opportunity to remind us that not every late-‘80s teenage schoolboy was queuing up to join the rugby team or ambush unwitting kids from other schools.

Goan Dogs
www.myspace.com/goandogs I first caught Bristol’s Goan Dogs last month at a gig at The Croft and genuinely wondered where they’d been all my life; then I found out - this was their first ever live gig. It takes some bands years of gigging to fine-tune the haunting vocals, energetic drums and carve the overall cohesion which these guys nailed on their first attempt. With the underlying uplifting melancholy of Radiohead, the contemporary relevance and mature vocals of Beiruit and vivid lyrics which conjure up some eerie dark and twisted imagery, Goan Dogs follow in the footsteps of bands like Revere. This could be one Bristol band which breaks through the confines of the South West to gain the recognition they deserve.
Cavalry Bears
www.myspace.com/cavalrybears Bristol’s Cavalry Bears sure are a talented bunch of guys. Singers Chris Levens and Michael Fox are both budding actors seen gracing the stage of many a play in Bristol and beyond and now they’ve joined forces to fuel their musical desires. Soft and gentle vocals soar high above the uplifting guitars and drums to create the most delightful indie tracks. With a compelling yet indistinguishable accent present in the track Rooftops, it has definite hints of Bellx1 and Haven about it. Summer’s Lease has a more contemporary feel to it, think Death Cab for Cutie. The joint vocal efforts compliment each other perfectly and the consistent guitar keeps the whole thing flowing like a beautiful ornate steam train.
*Nancy*
www.myspace.com/ nancyofficialmusic Bristol’s proving it’s worth as a producer of a wide range of demo fodder in this month’s mag and not wanting to focus entirely on guitar based indie we checked out a newish popster by the name of *Nancy* who lists Pink, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry as her top myspace friends. Sadly she doesn’t sound much like this trio of superstars. You can see where she’s going with her styling but she ends up looking like a watered down (yet prettier) Lady Gaga. And she’s got the electro synth and produced vocal thing that Gaga has to a certain extent with the odd catchy riff but she sounds a lot more like 90s Kylie or Madonna – a little less Grrrr than Pink and Perry - like a cup of tea without the teabag.

Well hello again readers, here we go with another mouth frothing summary of the past months gigs, this past month has been monstrous on the gig going front, there have been some real high flying legends co-horting themselves through Bristol. First up was KRS One, who needs no introduction to hip-hop fans as he was one of the true pioneers of the genre in the 80’s; he bounded onto the full-capacity launch of Bristol In:Motion at the Bristol mega club Motion. He was complimented by Skitz & Rodney P in support and a whole host of Djs; this meant that he did not take to the stage until the paltry hour of 2am. Still it gave him ample time to rattle out real hip hop and whoop whoop loads of times. The very next day I had to play a last min Non Compus Mentus show at Mr Wolfs with me feeling as if I had been head butting a wall constantly for 7 hours, which for some reason helped me to deliver an ultra intense performance.
Thanks to our sponsors:
Islet, who are one of my favourite live bands of the moment provided a perfectly mesmeric show at the Louisiana, if you have not seen these guys live then just go to one of their shows because their live performances are nothing less than spectacularly engaging and erratic, with various members running off into the audience and screaming in people’s faces. It’s as if Los Campesinos had taken way too much lemon sherbet and bound around like hyper-active kids. The Black Angels played the Thekla later that week, and I turned up early to catch up with Kool-Aid Electric Company who I had seen a couple of months before supporting Silver Apples. The last time I saw The Black Angels was two and half years ago at the Fleece, at that gig I remember seeing a massive force field around me (due to my synesthesia), little did I know that this time round my visions would be so much more intense! I mean I saw an eyeball try and eat me at one point, because the mixture of light and sound triggers off certain things in my head. Both Yuck and Fanzine engrossed me with their take on the American lofi indie sound, both clutching more than a handful of ear grabbing, floor board bouncing tunes. Errors and Twilight Sad did the friendly co-headline tour visiting the Fleece, displaying both their variety in styles and volume and craft with distortions and the way that both bands built up their songs - Twilight Sad with their epic force and Errors with their more dancey based shoe gaze. John Peel favourites Melt Banana absolutely destroyed the Thekla taking the lead for potential gig of the year. I have seen these guys two or three times before but nothing can quite prepare you for the sonic speed barrage that hits you when they take to the stage. The technicality of what they play is ridiculous, looping guitars at over 100 mph with crashing beats, sporadic female yelps as well as amazing hydraulic sounds coming from an instrument that looked like a cross between a Theremin and a chaos pad. They did an ultra intense encore squeezing 7 songs in just over 5mins. I could hardly walk because of the bruises sustained on both knee caps! Ouch!

I also got to see the legendary reclusive rapper MF Doom at the 02 Academy and yes the real Doom did turn up, contrary to some of the rumours. The next day saw Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip turning out more of the songs, supported by the bemusing spectacle of the all female psychedelic choir Gaggle. Wolf People also lead another contender for gig of the year at the Louisiana, they attacked 60’s and 70’s styled psychedelic rock breaking free into jams like early Jethro Tull/Led Zeppelin. www.247magazine.co.uk
