After graduating from Bournemouth University in 2005, with a BA in Illustration, Samuel worked commercially for a while, but is now mainly painting. He’s a real people watcher and is inspired by miss heard conversation and loves fitting different narratives together in his work - conversations from one place with images of people from somewhere else... Interestingly, he’s also inspired by searching for reasons, beliefs and Tourettes. He looks up to the likes of David Hockney, David Shrigely, David Carson, Ed Tempelton and Thomas Campbell. Grass roots 500 Festival on 4/5th June

News Exeter Roots Music and Cider Festival
May Day Bank Holiday Sunday this year introduces a multi-floored event filled with live music, DJs, and cider, at the Exeter Roots Music and Cider Festival. Headlining the event is Black Slate, a Reggae band who originally formed back in 1974 - they were a prominent name in the UK Reggae scene of the 70’s and early 80’s and are well worth watching. Other acts include Babar Lucks’ World Citizen Folk Band, New Riot, Peachy Farmer, Hot Dub Bikini Party, and DJ’s Full Melts and DJ Ricardo. As for the cider, award winning Sanford Orchards, winner of best British Brewer 2010 will have a bar that will be serving up a range of the best cider you’ll ever taste including Devon Red (Silver Medal, Taste of West 2010). The event will take place at Timepiece, Little Castle St, Exeter, EX4 3PX on Sunday 1st May. Entry is £3 before 9.30pm (doors open at 7.30pm), £4 after.
Cornish Festival Announces Lineup
The Rock Oyster Festival is back this year with a diverse line-up of musicians, home-grown rising stars and family entertainers. The three day festival will play host to artists including Headliners Bentley Rhythm Ace and The Easy Star All Stars, who will join Cornwall’s best chefs at Dinham House over the weekend of the 17th-19th June to help raise thousands of pounds for charity. Festival favourites The Destroyers will be making a return, whereas Cornish native Ruarri Joseph will be making his debut at the festival. Other Cornish musicians will also be well supported at the festival with acoustic duo Lisa & Helen and St Minver Silver Band
entertaining the crowds. It’s not just music: family entertainment includesThe Circus Bezercus and A Komedy of Errors and Rhythm and Beast - a spectacular display of trampoline-based juggling and acrobatics. The festival also showcases oysters and seafood from top chefs including Nathan Outlaw (chef and owner at Cornwall’s only two-Michelin-starred restaurant) alongside food stalls selling affordable local produce. Carpetface & Audible1 Fresh from their tour of the French Alps and with an album due for release in August, South West hero’s Carpetface and Audible1 talk about the album, joint ventures, their early 90s vibe and plans for the future. So what have you been up to since 247 spoke to you last? Carpetface: We’ve written and recorded a new album, which is ready for release in June. We’ve got a single out and have made a music video, which we shot at the end of last year. We’ve also done about 250 live shows, I’ve had a son and got a new van. Phew! That’s a lot of gigs - do you play in the Southwest much? Carpetface: We shot our new video in Bude, Cornwall, in ‘Rogue nightclub’ which is where we also do a lot of nights. We always have some good fun there. We’re also booking a South West tour, which will be quite soon. And you’ve just come back from a month touring the French Alps, how did it go? Audible1: It’s probably our most fun set of gigs because it’s based in a really beautiful place and the French are really accommodating, you get treated really well. Everyone’s up for a really good party because they’re out there for a good time, so it’s always really good for us to go out there and we seem to have got a sort of following somehow over the years and it’s good to go out and play to those people. What were some of your personal highlights over there? Audible1: The croissants, I think. Carpetface: Gig-wise, (points to Audible) just you trying to go: “when I say Carpet, you say faster” to a crowd that didn’t speak any English. So how would you describe your style? How are you different? Carpetface: I would like to think that we’re taking it back to how it was with an early 90’s sound. I’m personally influenced by the hip hop I listen to which is generally American and normally quite old. We just like to entertain, so there’s bits of surreal stuff in there and lots of silliness. Quite fundamentally, we think that Hip Hop should be fun and something that no

one should be scared of trying. For your new album and your sound in general, where does your inspiration come from? Audible1: We’re influenced by old school Hip hop, but actually we listen to loads of different styles of music, I suppose that everything you listen to sort of plays into it. You’ve got a fresh sound and it’s hard to compare you to anybody else, how did it come about? Carpetface: If you go back and listen to hip hop from 15 to 20 years ago and also stuff from the 60’s and 70’s, you’ll find there are loys of bits and pieces that our stuff sounds like, but it’s a fragmented combination of influences that not enough people are still into to notice. I don’t think there is actually such a thing as completely original anymore. The video, ‘Down to the Sound’ is fun and bouncy, did you enjoy making it? Carpetface: Yeah, especially the process - thinking of the ideas then watching it back. It probably takes a few watches to see that there’s a little bit of a plot in there, well as much of a plot as you could get. It was really enjoyable and fun to make! If you actually laugh out loud to little bits in a music video, then it’s definitely going to stick in your mind - that’s the plan! So, what’s next for you guys? Carpetface: The album is coming out in August and we’ll be doing a few festivals, but we don’t know exactly which ones yet. Audible1: We’ve got the South West tour coming up too and we’re starting work on our new music video, which will be the next thing.

KellyJay Female DJs are few and far between but leading the girls to victory in the South West is Kelly Jay. 247’s Frances Allan finds out what it’s like to be a female DJ with big plans in the West Country. How did you get into being a DJ and how long have you been doing it? I have been going out for about 10 years and when I was going out I always thought that’s what I want to do, I wanted to be behind the decks instead of on the dance floor. As soon as I could afford it I bought CDJs and was practicing every night. Myself and my partner we were co-running After Dark at the time in Plymouth, and that’s when I started. I just chucked myself in the deep end and started playing there and it took off, it helped quite a lot because obviously I could play there whenever I wanted to put myself on and get noticed that way. How is it going so far then? I have a residency in Exeter at the Phoenix, playing the Dark Knights events. There are a few nights there, but that’s the main place that I play in the South West. I started my residency there last year, I played for them at a couple of events and then they asked me to become resident, and it’s going really well. What are your aspirations for your career? I would love to play at some of the clubs I’ve been to, but I want to continue to build myself and hopefully get into some of those clubs to play, places like God’s Kitchen in Birmingham - that would be absolutely amazing. What makes you stay in the South West – what are the benefits to you? It has got its pros and cons, it is good being down here because I have built up quite a good residency, but it does mean that I have to travel a lot when I get gigs further afield.
Who influences you, musically and otherwise? I am influenced by a lot of people really, especially other female DJs that have done really well on the scene, because there aren’t as many of us so I have always looked up to them. Musically I am influenced by a lot of different genres of dance music, but people like Eric Prydz, he’s amazing, I like people that build up their own sound.
“I wanted to be behind the decks instead of on the dance floor” Do you face any challenges or prejudice being a female DJ? I think there is a bit; you have to be a lot more careful about which gigs you take. You have to make sure that the promoters are well known, especially if you are traveling and you have to go on your own to a club you’ve never played at before. It is easier though to get gigs, you stand out more because there aren’t as many female DJs. What about getting your music recognised, how is that different? I have found it a bit easier because you can kind of promote yourself a bit better as a female DJ. I think a lot of the girls they help each other out because they all know how hard it is for us to get into it. I have got quite a few friends who are female DJs across the country and we all help each other out where we can.

We managed to catch up with the guitar plucking singer/songwriter before he waded into the chilly English waters in pursuit of some surf, to talk about tunes from yesteryear, playing abroad and his love for Devon. Ben Howard’s intriguing guitar plucking laced with angelic tones take inspiration from and beautifully compliment the relaxing South West lifestyle. The calming and euphoric melodies are delivered with vibrant energy when performed live. This trait has quite rightly entitled the proud Devonian to play various venues far from his hometown shores, supporting Julia Stone and Xavier Rudd along the way. When lending your ears to his new EP it’s not hard to figure out his musical influences - it’s reassuring to hear that he sought folk music icons for inspiration from a young age. “I started playing the guitar when I was about eight years old and didn’t really play anything else. I had a songbook that was full of my own stuff that sounded like Simon and Garfunkel. Van Morrison, Joni Mitchel and Jon Martyn all inspired my music and still do. Back when music was good.” Claims Ben. The singer/songwriter’s passion for playing music hasn’t gone unnoticed by other acts; Ben has supported many artists on tour playing some of Europe’s première venues. “The atmosphere is always really good abroad, we played the Paradiso in Amsterdam, which has got to be one of the best venues in Europe. It’s an unbelievable place with big high ceilings, and obviously you’re smack bang in the middle of the city. The weirdest places we played were a boat on the Thane in India or this massive warehouse in France where the crowd were completely bonkers.” When touring the West Country lad confesses that he gets a little homesick. “I do yeah, I suppose I don’t miss it that much but I’m always relieved to get back home. I love it down here; it’s beautiful.” Back on his home turf Ben likes to get in tune with the unhurried nature of life near the coast. “I like to get in the water as much as possible and do a bit of climbing every now and again. But it’s nice to chill out when I’m not playing music, so nothing too frenetic. It’s good to just sit down and read a book.” We ask him what he would be doing if he was stripped of his musical talent, he provides a modest answer: “I wanted to be a pro surfer at a young age but I was never good enough. I would probably learn a trade; maybe work on a building site. I like the quiet life.” The chilled guitarist ponders the future and predicts where he will be in five years time. “Hopefully I will still be playing music and touring. I suppose I would be thinking about settling down with kids, which I’m really looking forward to. Still, it will be good to have a bit of fun first.” So what does 2011 have in store for this down to earth individual and his band? “Global domination I reckon. Nah, not really: the plan is to just play music. We love doing shows: our main ambition is to play a lot. Tom Costelloe talks to Rachael D’Cruze about Plymouth’s Dance Academy, his time in jail and how he’s moving on... If you’re an avid clubber in the South West you’re sure to be familiar with DJ Tom Costelloe. If you’re not, the name probably rings a bell anyway, as Tom’s been subject to a lot of media attention since Plymouth’s Dance Academy, the club where he was resident DJ, was closed following a police investigation. It was claimed that Tom, and club owner, Manoucehr Bahmanzadeh, allowed “the rampant sale of ecstasy” and so were to be charged. It was the first time in UK club history that anyone had been tried for drug charges without having sold any themselves – Tom was basically used as a fall guy, and despite appealing his charge, was jailed for five years. Tom! You’re free! How does it feel to be home at last, you are out on probation, right? Ahh, it feels great to be home: absolutely wonderful. Yes, I still have a two and a half year licence to serve which is in conjunction with probation. Stepping back in time - tell us about the Dance Academy at the time of the investigation – what was it like when you were being investigated? It wasn’t pleasant at all to be on bail, awaiting trial, and being investigated. This period was just over two years long culminating in a long trial. To be honest I have accepted what happened and drawn a line under it: I’ve done my time and I want to move forwards with my life. I’ve never been in trouble before in my life, its not a good experience. I was found guilty in a court in this Country which I have to accept and get on with, and I do. Tell us about the support you received from the dance scene and people of the South West? The support I received was absolutely huge. I got a massive amount of letters from strangers mainly due to Mixmag highlighting the case - I got one letter from a guy in Canada. I wrote back to everyone that wrote to me. The support I got from my close family and friends was pretty overwhelming to be honest. I also got a lot of letter from strangers, mainly due to Mixmag highlighting the case - I’m not sure I could have done it without all of this, so I have got to say a massive thank you from my heart, to everyone that stood by me. What was it like inside? Without going into too much detail it was pretty awful! Despite what you read in the papers prison is far from an ‘easy time’, and anyone who says it is, is a liar. It was an extremely difficult time for me and for my family. Hopefully you got something out of it – while you obviously missed out on all the all the developments in the club scene – did you get onto any music courses in prison? Or have we been watching too much TV? 14 |

I chose to try and do something positive with my time away. I re-sat my Royal College of London Music grades 1-3. I did several courses including teaching, I was teaching Maths and English to other inmates at one point and gained an NVQ as a Teaching Assistant. I tried to keep myself busy - I gained a distinction in a BTEC Music Technology course as well. I also spent time talking to youngsters at a school, telling them about my experience and how hard prison is, not just for you but for the people you leave behind. I tried to pass on to these kids that getting into trouble is certainly not a cool thing to be doing. Apart from the college stuff I worked at a local hospital as well, for free, doing something for the community. You wasted no time in getting back behind the desks when you got out – what did you miss the most and do you feel the club scene has changed much? Apart from missing my family and loved ones I missed DJing and music above everything else. The club scene has changed quite dramatically, DJs don’t get paid like they used to, that’s for sure!Perhaps that’s a good thing - as a promoter you always want to be at the front of whatever people are wanting - clubbing and the club scene is always changing - people will always want to go out, so its about adapting to what is current I guess. How do you feel your time inside has changed you? The whole thing has had a massive impact on my life; my world. It made me realise a good few things about myself that I wanted to change. It changed me totally. Life is very precious. I won’t take anything for granted ever again, and I certainly do not want to go back to prison ever again. It’s made me a more positive person, and much more stronger, especially in mind, but it took some time. You were producing as well as DJing before you were sent away, right? What are your plans for the future? Music will always play a huge part in my life. I’m getting involved with Kidd Kaos’ record label and artist management, I’ll be working with lots of up and coming stars from the region. I always loved pushing through up and coming talent when I was at the Dance Academy, so it will be a pleasure to work with guys. I will be releasing some of my own material shortly too, as well as continuing to DJ. Where can we come and see you play? Upfest’ 11 Europe’s largest free live urban arts festival; Upfest, takes over its cultural home of Bristol on Sat 4 and Sun 5 June as over 250 artists and 40 DJs, groups & human beatboxers showcase there unique talents.

Now in it’s fourth year, Upfest, otherwise known as ‘The Urban Paint Festival’ is a must attend event for street art fans and is firmly established as the main street art event in Europe. The two day festival attracts urban artists from all over the world who flock to Bristol’s Tobacco Factory - the festival’s birthplace, as well as a number of locations across the south of the city to paint street art and illustration in a wide range of styles. The festival is interactive on a number of levels, and includes a give it a go wall for all budding artists visiting the event, as well as the chance to see artists creating their pieces live over the weekend. Amongst the 250 artists from 17 countries taking part, these include national street art artists such as Inkie, DON & SPQR alongside home grown Bristol talent, Cheo, Jago, Jody and Lokey alongside UK crews TND, PCM & Detox. International artists include Herakut and Andreas von Chrzanowski aka Case. Upfest partner Stephen Hayles said: “Bristol is established as the home of graffiti in the UK; the whole country has attributed this to the city. We are proud to be a part of this movement and will continue to provide a platform for brand new artists to break onto the UK urban art scene.” Alongside the painting, the festival helps raise funds and drive awareness for the Bristol based charity – National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA) who work to address the problems children have growing up in families where one or both parents suffer from alcoholism. Upfest have raised £15,000 for the charity so far and this years festival will see weird and wonderful forms of fundraising including the on site cutting of the event organisers hair into a Mohican by Bristol’s urban stylists - Mac Daddy’s, as well as badge making and stalls operated by the charity.

Upfest ’11 runs all day on Sat 4 and Sun 5 June at the Tobacco Factory, North St Park, Hen & Chicken, Spotted Cow and Try Again pub’s, and is free at all venues. There is also an after party on Sat 4 June at Start the Bus in Bristol, where there is a chance to meet and hang out with the artists too! (Specialist Subject) The underground’s most loveable Cornwallians, Bangers, raise the bar with their debut album proper; full of more hooks than Abu Himsa’s spares drawer, & more growling melodies than a grizzly bear singing convention, with oodles of choppy, faintly melancholic guitar riffs that have come to define the band. Dealing with the minutiae of everyday life, Roo Pescod emotively spits out honest & self-deprecating punk paeans to procreation (Making Friends), co-habitation (The Love Nest) & cybernation (Geeks & Paedophiles) with an ever-present, skewed sense of romantic idealism; while the magnificent ‘Church Street In Ruins’ declares that “the last thing I need is any more things”, betraying the band’s desire for the simpler things in life. Punk near-perfection.
Hollie Cook (Mr Bongo)
Soulful reggae that’s bound to bring pleasure on late summer nights. Hollie is Paul Cook’s (Sex Pistols) daughter and one time member of the later incarnation of The Slits. This is a truly breathtaking album with real heart and soul. Her version of The Shangri-Las’ Walking in the Sand is a heartbreaker, and it works wonderfully with a reggae arrangement. Hollie’s voice is smooth as silk and completely natural, with none of the pointless vocal acrobatics and fake expression that have become the curse of the present-day pop/soul singer. The fact that she uses her real voice makes her talent shine through, touching every song with passion and deep emotion. Perfect.

Exeter’s finest Daz-white punk’n’roll brigands release their first full long player and what a corker it is. Produced by the inimitable John Reis (Speedo to you) in his balmy San Diego studio, ‘This Is...’ finds our dapper Devonians in great shape, taking ‘50s rock’n’roll and ‘70s punk to their logical meeting place, with a switchblade in the back pocket for security. The Speedo touch has inevitably resulted in a sweet, Night Marchers-esque garage authenticity, especially on the prickly ‘Blood Thicker’, ‘Cinco De Mayo’ & ‘Group Identity’; although Al Kershaw’s relentlessly piercing yelp still takes some getting used to. Short, sharp shards of riffhungry rock’n’roll never sounded so fresh.
Meat Puppets Lollipop
(Megaforce) I used to think that the Meat Puppets were a gnarly naughty punk rock band because they’d always be written about alongside the likes of Black Flag & Butthole Surfers. Little did I know, they were actually purveyors of a distinctly twisted form of country. Fast forward 25 years and you’d be forgiven for thinking that someone had sucked the blood out of their veins, such is the innocent prairie plod of ‘Incomplete’ and the wistful yet desultory ‘Lantern’. We all grow up but do we really need to let everyone know about it via the medium of song? My teenage misconceptions are well and truly shattered.
And So I Watch You From Afar Gangs
(Richter Collective) ‘Gangs’ was created in eight weeks after the inimitable Belfast quartet scrapped all the songs intended for their sophomore album; which may account for its cohesive brilliance and askew mindset. ‘BEAUTIFULUNIVERSEMASTERCHAMPION’ kicks off proceedings with crypto-African arpeggios that leave no room for contemplation, but it’s the startling ‘Seven Billion People All Alive At Once’ that opens the record up – post-rocking with the best, only to fly off on more unexpected tangents than David Icke. ‘Think: Breathe: Destroy’ is how The Who might have sounded if they came from outer space. ASIWYFA are well aware that, without vocals, they can take their odysseys to the furthest reaches of their imagination. ‘Gangs’ is proof.

Post-punk hero and original guitarist of The Fall, Martin Bramah returns with a new band, fresh sound and a buzzing record. Recorded completely live in the studio with hardly any overdubs, this album represents Factory Star in their raw form: pure, stripped-down, quirky and intense. It’s a warm sound with bright guitars, organ and Bramah’s youthful voice (also recorded live) pushed to the forefront of the mix. Guitars jerk and jangle, the drums are tight and precise and every track shines in its own right, as well as adding another tone to the record as a whole. Fans of Bramah’s former bands, Blue Orchids and The Fall won’t be disappointed. Don Scannell

On his debut album, Don Scannell has created spooky folk, which is mainly piano-led, with help from Asian Dub Foundation’s Martin Savale on bass & drum duties. The standout song is Mystery, on which he delivers his haunting vocal style over breakbeat drums- and it actually gels together surprisingly well. Another highlight is the title track, a dark and deep, Nick Drake-style blend of cello and picked guitar. The choice of artwork though (a mechanical horse) is contradictory to the music, which is generally pastoral and organic. A calming and pleasant journey, with a few highs and lows along the way. Three Silver Pieces will more than likely go down well with Fleet Foxes or Iron & Wine appreciators.

(Year Zero) This is stating the bleedin’ obvious, but punk is NOT a genre, or anything to do with clothes: it’s an attitude. More conclusive proof here, on part 2 of Needs’ mammoth trawl through relevant sources and inspirations. Kris Needs Presents Dirty Water 2: More Birth of Punk Attitude comprises 2 discs of eclectic sounds then, from the 60s garage stomp of The Human Expression to the melodious Big Star, served with a smidgen of jazz, a dollop of Kraut and plenty of rock & roll. A few obvious choices (Velvets/Bowie) and some real essentials: Captain Beefheart, MC5 and Suicide. Tapper Zukie and Junior Murvin provide the reggae. Not a tattoo, skateboard or piercing in sight.

This deep rooted collective came from the sound-system culture in the 80’s taking Dub to another level when fusing it with minimal techno in the 90’s. This 2 disc set lays out the history for you featuring some great artists like Colin Cod, Dave Tench, Sis K, Molara, Mene Wood, Dave Fullwood, Chris Petter, Dave Ruffy, John Jennings, Y.T and many more to be named. You will also find some vinyl only, rare finds in the collection as well as a previously unreleased studio session recorded for the late, great John Peel.

There is a dark edge to some of the album with the obvious hip hop and rock influence, open to be appreciated by a broad range of audience. Swamp has worked with some true icons in his time, touring alongside as well as well as being called into the studio for his skills. Kid Rock, Kool Keith, The Crystal Method and Beck are amongst the list. He also DJ’d for K Chill and Layzie Bone before the mighty Bone Thugs and Harmony were formed. Swamp has showcased his ability as a producer, writer and vocalist on this album. Out on his own label Decadent Records now.

If you are into your underground Hip Hop, this will be right up your street, especially if you are particularly into the Bristol underground hip hop sound. The Most Wanted I love kid sister. If you do too but you wished she came with an angrier attitude and more lo fi productions then Shunda K is here to make your day. An amazing line up of global productions on this and collaborations galore but Shunda is always the star, hip hop that maintains credibility whilst still managing to appeal to the people who love their urban stars making trance / club music. If you don’t support this you shouldn’t complain next time David Guetta etc hook up with your younger sister’s favourite R’n’B artist. This album includes collaborations with the likes of Mark Yardley from Stanton Warriors, Sick Rick, Flore, Deekline, Electrosexual alongside many others.
Red Snapper Key
(V2 Benelux) Back before the Internet, I know right, ancient, there was a genre known as trip hop, one of the A listers was Red Snapper, I must admit my heart didn’t lift when this came through the door. As happens now and then though, I was surprised by this, the essence of their sound is still the same, might double bass and tight drums, but whether it’s due to them doing this for so long or just I’m in the right mood for this today, it works, really well. Dub influences, jazz not in a good way feel, and hip hop inspired. An album to check if you need something to smoke to, chill to or just find out what happens if you still make “trip hop” after 10 years.

A refreshing antidote to the Arctic Monkeys’ attempts to reinvent themselves as charmless riff-rockers. Turner provides a touching, intimate set of songs to soundtrack the nostalgic, teenromance Submarine. Rather than attempt to plot the storyline with lyrics, Turner makes the wise decision to use bizarre, impressionistic wordplay & imagery to evoke the uncertainty & magic of first love. Gems like ‘how can I put you off when you’re a matter of urgency’ have the scruffy charm of his early work & work beautifully with the low-key, folky backdrop. A short-but-sweet reminder of Turner’s talents, time to leave the Monkeys at the zoo?
Okkervil River I Am Very Far
(Jagjaguwar) As boisterous opener The Valley clatters confidently into view it is apparent just how far Okkervil River have come over the past decade or so. From low-key, relatively pastoral countryfolk beginnings they’ve developed into a rabblerousing, fiercely literate alternative rock band on the verge of mainstream success. I Am Very Far sees the band expanding their perimeters considerably; fans of career best Black Sheep Boy would barely recognise the groove-based Piratess or the Bends era-Radiohead evoking Show Yourself. Intriguingly, the accompanying lyric book lists an extra 9 songs, presumably there are further treats in store. With the mighty Scott Hendy from Boca 45 / dynamo productions and Bristol legend Parker together you know this album is gonna be amazing, the first tracks these guys did had New York Emskee on the mic and was a breath of fresh air. This album is a slight departure for what you would expect for the Jalapeno label, home to the likes of Kraak & Smaak and Skeewiff, both these producers know what they are doing with beats and carefully crafted sample a delica, add a fine selection of guests like Mystro and Sarah Scott, plus some awesome string sections to give this that epic orchestral feel, and you have an album that works in clubs, on radio and at home. Watch this blow. Huge.
Songbook Vol. 2
After the bells and whistles production & bravura arrangements of 2008’s outstanding Harps & Angels, this is a timely reminder that Newman’s material works just as well when stripped down to brass tacks. These are straight forward piano & vocal treatments of songs spanning 40 years. Newman somehow manages to cover a broad range of topics (xenophobia, skewed history lessons, lovelorn balladry) whilst seemingly having an innate sense of how best to musically place each lyric. It never seems forced, even the wittier numbers manage to escape the trapdoor labelled ‘comedy song.’ A strange, brave collection of songs that few of his contemporaries would have the wit or balls to contemplate writing.

Not heard of either of these two before but after one listen to this album they are on my radar for sure. American hip hop that feels like they’ve listened to their fair share of golden era albums, fine beats that are part dilla part primo, it’s been a while since I’ve nodded my head this much. For me, ‘Size The Moment’ stands out the most, they have guest verses from both Kool Keith and Pacewon both of which are nice but don’t outshine Insight too much. Like a lot of albums this is high quality but would take a hell of a lot of promo to break into the mainstream.

Die It Blonde
Chicago lo-fi merchants Smith Westerns have turned down the fuzz, polished up the melodies & cheered up considerably. Fans of their recorded-at-school, eponymous debut will insist that the pop suss was always there but now the melodic ambition has got the grand production job to match. Whilst this will no doubt do wonders for their commercial prospects, unfortunately it places them in the same retro ballpark as many of the brit-pop influences they’ve been talking up. Whilst the bittersweet single Weekend does a great job of matching their exuberance with a radio-friendly glam jangle; at times Dye It Blonde veers into classic rock territory, a shame when these songs should be fizzing with the promise of teenage summers.

www.crushuk.com After reading Crush UK boast of being ‘England’s premier power pop-punk-countryblues-rock band’, I was expecting the exact opposite & I wasn’t far off. Ranging from the artless (Always) to the clueless (So Wot) the songs are feeble yet earnest attempts to imitate the likes of The Small Faces, The Jam, The Eagles, The Damned & various other ensembles who flourished from ‘68 -‘78. Chief Crusher, Martin Weller, has collaborated with Peter Frampton but there’s little trace of any developed craft. Still, it’s unexpected and untypical of anything else we receive so credit where it’s due. Their fifth platter, ‘Proper Job’, is out now.

www.myspace.com/laetolisteps It didn’t come with any blurb so I had to do a bit of research while listening to opening song ‘Sleeping Bears’, a lovely shimmer of languid harmonies with a Midlake-esque lilt. By the time ‘Biting My Tongue’ had almost shuffled off its wistful country twang, I discover that they’re actually a London-based supergroup – and a super group – consisting of previous members of bands such as Garlic, Thunderclap Newman and Cornershop. And when the amazing ‘Rose’ locks into its sultry, rolling gait I’m smitten, hook, line and sinker, with their reflective, dust-bowl confessions. Available through all digital outlets, make this record your first blind purchase of the year, before the second album drops in the not-too-distant future.

www.myspace.com/hanterhirmusic Cornwall’s Hanterhir typify the singular vision of people who live in cultural isolation, which is why I, for one, love it with all my frazzled heart. Their new album ‘Agapus’ is an organic psycherock opus that proudly flashes its Cornish roots without resorting to predictability. Strong, often beautiful, and dark-lit melodies dominate all ten songs, whether they’re encased in swirling guitars and freewheeling drums (‘The Centre Of All’), acoustic melodrama (‘Stay Down’) or native dialect (‘Plos Mis Du’ – rough translation: ‘Dirty Black Month’). If Arcade Fire were reared in remote villages dotted along a slither of wind-swept coastline, they might have sounded a bit like this. Which, of course, would not have hindered them one bit.

Get brunch for £5 or less after a surf - Mr. Kittows sausage and fried egg doorstep sandwich, or organic smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast maybe? If you’re out for lunch or dinner you’ll be spoilt for choice with small plates, mains, dersets and plates to share, which are always popular, especially the Mezze platter at £9.50 Tzatziki, humus, black olive tapenade, roasted red peppers, marinated olives and warm pitta. Yum. I always have trouble resisting the ‘Blue Burger’ – a homemade burger topped with mushroom and blue cheese sauce served with hand cut chips. Winner. The pizzas are authentically light with generous and inventive toppings, including tomato, mozzarella, chilli beef and sour cream. Food is always freshly prepared and well presented. As you’d expect the bar does get very busy when the sun shines, so get there early to bag a table outside. 6 Old Brewery Yard, Falmouth TR11 2BY / 01326 211 457 www.facebook.com/pages/cafe-ca innamon There’s an abundance of great cafes in Falmouth and although I’m not a vegetarian, I always find myself heading to the vegetarian Cafe Cinnamon when the sun is out. Why? Well I’ll admit I like it when it’s grey and rainy too, as the food is both delicious and wholesome, but the piece de resistance for me has to be the outside seating area. The cafe is tucked away in Old Brewery Yard, one of the oldest parts of Falmouth, which is in the town centre but off the main street, so it isn’t swarming with tourists in the summer – you have to know it’s there. Maybe I shouldn’t be writing this... The courtyard is 450 years old and is shared with an upmarket cocktail bar, Hand, and some nice vintage shops – it looks pretty and has a nice bohemian feel. The best bit: its a real sun trap. Food wise, Cafe Cinnamon keep it simple, but they do everything well and on site – think paninis, salads, soups and tartlets. The Brie and mango panini is a personal favourite. The portions are generous - you go away feeling satisfied and nourished. The service is very good and the cafe has a friendly and intermediate feel: table service with genuine smiles. Prices are very reasonable, with most lunching coming to around £7, including a drink. The cafe opens Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 3pm. Look them up on Facebook.
PLYMOUTH The Waterfront Restaurant and Bar
9 Grand Parade, Plymouth, PL1 3DQ / 01752 226 326 www.thewaterfrontplymouth.co.uk With the finest view of any restaurant in Plymouth, the aptly named Waterfront Restaurant and Bar is situated right on the water’s edge, in front of Plymouth Hoe. It has an interesting history and has been a major landmark on Plymouth’s Hoe for many years. Around 1890 The Waterfront used to be the home of The Royal Western Yacht Club, founded in 1827. Since then, it’s been under various ownership’s with varying degrees of success. Current owners, the local Evans family have worked hard to get the place back up and running since taking over in July 2010 and focusing on good value food. We rocked up after work on a Friday evening for some food and to soak up the last of the days sun. The food selection is pretty standard pub food, with a healthy fresh fish selection too and when our order arrived where a good size, tasted fine and where reasonably priced but what really stood out was the quick and excellent service, coupled with the restaurants great position on the waters edge. This is easily one of the best outdoor eating areas in the city centre, overlooking Plymouth Sound and over to Mount Edgecombe. Hot tip, this is the best place to watch the cities annual National Firework Championships too, taking place on 16 & 17 August in Plymouth.

Who said hideously conceived, ebony-mulleted emo-metal without a conscience was dead? Well, anyone with an ounce of common sense for starters. Which discounts all of the kids hopelessly lapping up the tragic sights and sounds of GLAMOUR OF THE KILL (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 18th March). It’s bad enough that they’re cartoon chancers, but when you hear of the York quartet’s shitty off-stage behaviour – ordering other bands to increase merch prices, not sharing the dressing room – it leaves a sour taste and reminds you that this is the complete antithesis of punk rock. Fuck them and the lame horse they rode in on. Slimming down to a three-piece suits Plymouth punks BEARFIGHT quite well (Jack Chams, Plymouth, 26th March). They kept things solid and simple with raspy throats, grumbling bass lines and the occasional widdlesome guitar solo, although the intimate confines of the venue meant that the lug-holes were afforded no mercy. It was a joy to be back on the road with APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE after the arctic spell cut our winter tour short (Truro 29th, Plymouth 30th, Portsmouth 31st March). Down in Cornwall, Banger’s frontman ROO PESCOD kicked things off with solo versions of Bangers classics plus a couple great new songs from their imminent album ‘Small Pleasures’. Amusing and endearing. In Plymouth, DEAD POETS set the tone with their developed guitar noise, sourcing superlative riffs and roars from the archives of the finest punk and post-hardcore. Over in Portsmouth, LUCKY ONE DIES FIRST were behaving like your archetypal hardcore band: cocksure, mouthy and pretty mediocre; while Canterbury’s duel-drummered AVENGE THEE & NAIME combined avant-noise with try-hard camaraderie that tested one’s levels of tolerance. Of course, Apologies were inspirational every night. Their simple chord sequences and unifying, singalong refrains winning them many new converts along the south coast. The much-anticipated FRANK TURNER solo stint to raise funds for the White Rabbit was an exercise in unabashed group love (Plymouth, 2nd April). Indeed it’s hard to imagine any indie-folk troubadour this side of Billy Bragg garnering as much adoration as ol’ Frank right now. And he dished it right back to the sold-out venue by the three minute, conscience-pricking anthem-load. The appeal of youthful, alt-pop minstrel COSMO JARVIS and his competent band meant that hordes of baying fans warmed to his folksy ukulele strummage – especially the shanty shimmer of ‘Gay Pirates’ – despite a few hitches and Jarvis’ unfounded worries about his voice. Boston-based quartet MAKE DO AND MEND were pretty predictable when it came to gravel-gargling punk rock but they did have a way with powerful, layered riffola and the singer’s growl sounded like the work of three men (Nag’s Head, High Wycombe, 3rd April). Cardiff boys SOLUTIONS proffered urgent punk rock, while KATIE RAINE surprised everyone with a bittersweet, marshmallow croon that wavered and gloriously frayed when she ramped it up to a shout. The same day that Exeter Cavern hosted a Japan relief benefit show, the north-east of the country was hit again by a substantial aftershock (7th April). The disaster capitalists must be having a field day. First up, LINEKER provided the punk thrust; power-pop trio THE MUNCIE GIRLS were brilliantly forceful and melodic; OXBOW LAKE dealt in wonderfully cinematic, post-rock sturm und drang; and the likeably scatty WILL RENE kept things short, sweet and hyperactive, like a poppier Andrew Jihad Jackson. Lovely. Which left Bristol’s FIGHTING FICTION to appropriate the acoustic punk spirit of Lawrence Arms, add some agit-rock’n’roll fizz and sing like they meant it to a modest throng of faithful fans (Junction, Plymouth, 11th April). Enjoyably seething. See-ya bye.

Summit Festival Warm Up Party On Saturday 2 April Karma Nightclub in Plymouth hosted an epic Summit Festival Warm up Party alongside Radio One DJ Kissy Sell Out, Danny Byrd and Freestylers. Kissy Sell Out, branded ‘One of the most exciting, charismatic and entertaining DJs of the decade’ by Mixmag in 2009, performed a unique and extremely energetic two hour live visual show as part of the Wild Romance Album UK tour. Danny Byrd, liquid drum and bass legend played some banging drum n bass tune that got the crowd skanking and loving it! The whole atmosphere in the club was electric with the night displaying an interesting variety of genres including house, trance, electro, drum and bass and dubstep (to name a few!) Karma is hosting an Unleashed smasher on April 30 where Andy C, Emalkay and Alix Perez will take to the decks. Photos: Jess Board
