Like my mo? You probably already know that the moustache and November come together each year for Movember. But just in case you don’t: Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1 clean shaven and then grow a tash for the entire month. Think of your mo as a ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Ladies, if you’re able, please don’t grown one, but do find out more about Movember at www.movember.com. Other than donning our facial fuzz a month early in the name of editorial deadlines, we’ve been working hard to put together a mag we think is better than ever. Do you like it? How could we make it better? Want to contribute? Why not give me a shout at rachael@outofhand.co.uk, I’d love to hear from you! Rach x Rachael D’Cruze, Editor.

That funded my first months rent in Bath and I stayed in that area until I moved homewards in 2005. Since then I have illustrated nearly 40 children’s books, hundreds of greeting cards, a few CD covers, including the one you see here, merchandise designs, animations for music videos and many more individual projects and jobs,” says Caroline, whose ultimate goal is to put herself in her work more; to have a more authorial practice which is balanced with a successful commercial practice. She also aspires to win some awards for her personal work: “I don’t do much at the moment so I can only hope the MA gives me that opportunity. Working with Angus and Julia Stone has been the nearest I’ve come: I received a framed platinum disk in the post the other day, with my name on it! I did the artwork for it so was a huge and amazing surprise. They been nominated for loads of Aria Awards in Australia and as I do a lot of their artwork so means I’m part of the award winning team I guess!” See more of Caroline’s work at: www.carolinepedler.co.uk and www.carolinepedler.blogspot.com, or give her a shout at caroline@carolinepedler.co.uk

Tattooing by hand You have to have absolute confidence in your ability as an artist to tattoo your own face, as Martin Poole has done, by hand. Martin’s a hand tattooist: an artist working without a gun or machine, in favour of a return to tradition. Traditional tattooing by hand, often called ‘poking’, is a precise art, where designs are made up from dots, which has seen a small scale revival in the tattoo scene as a whole, over the last ten years, but Martin is the only professional to offer the service in the whole of the South West. From his body suit and looking at the quality of his intricate designs, you might assume Martin has been a tattoo artist for a long time. Not so. He worked a white collar job for twenty-six years, until he couldn’t stand it any more. “I secured my pension entitlement and pissed off,” he says honestly. A lot of the coverage on Martin’s body, which he hasn’t done himself, was done at, the now closed, Temple Tattoo in Brighton, where he began to get some work done by hand and became fascinated by it. On Christmas day three years ago, he began tattooing his own hand and this was to become the beginning of his new vocation and new life in Bude.
art and the intricate designs suited to dot work draw people to Martin as a tattooist, as well as those who want their curiosity satisfied. Getting tattooed by hand hurts a lot less, although this is clearly not a reason to get it done, makes a lovely tapping noise and as it’s more natural there’s less skin trauma and tattoos heal quicker. “It’s a very relaxing process I’ve even had a few people fall asleep while I’ve been working,” says Martin, who designs tattoos to play on the strengths of the traditional art and favours an organic style in his designs, all of which are custom drawn. “Getting tattooed by machine can be too easy. A bit like a consumer purchase, it can loose the significance it once had for some people,” says Martin. “Hand tattoos are well suited to people who want a personal and significant tattoo. These tend to be smaller, but don’t have to be,” he continues. Lots of Martin’s customers come to him to get existing conventional tattoos extended, something he is very good at, although of course he’d prefer to have fresh skin to design for and work on. As you can see he’s not got a lot left of his own.
“Getting tattooed by machine can be too easy. A bit like a consumer purchase, it can loose the significance it once had for some people”
Tattooing by hand, and being tattooed by hand respectively, is an entirely different experience to conventional, modern tattooing. It’s a much slower process, as you’d expect, which makes it more expensive. “Designs are built up out of dots, I can’t go sideways, that’s the limitation,” says Martin, who can do line work and small areas of block work, although laborious. An appreciation of the traditional
Martin is currently based at Aquaries Tattoo in Bude (01288 353529). In the new year he’ll be going on the road, working at different tattoo studios across the region, but still spending his downtime at Aquaries. To find out more see his MySpace page at www.myspace.com/chopsticksmartin and visit Aquaries at www.myspace.com/aquariestattoo
Verdict
Tried and Tested
Martin makes his own tools for tattooing, using the same needles as tattoo guns use and chopsticks. Yes, chopsticks. Tools are marked according to the amount of needles they contain (the more needles, the larger the dot) and are completely sterile. It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway, that a brand new set of tools are used on each customer. Martin actually gifts the tools to the customer afterwards, as a memento.
247 contributor and tattoo enthusiast Tom Sharpe, accompanied Editor Rachael to Aquaries Tattoo and had some ink done by Martin. Tom says; “It was an different experience to getting a normal tattoo; strangely relaxing. Martin is a thoroughly nice chap and I will definitely be going back.”

Paloma Faith has become unstoppable this year. As an actress, she’s been in the St Trinians movie and also the recent Channel 4 series, Coming Up. Now she’s rocking festivals as a Platinum-selling artist, with her brand of soulpowered pop. Paloma is heading South West this month, so 247’s Arash Torabi had a chat with the busy lady about the importance of visuals, performance and what’s next. Congratulations on going Platinum. Did you think you’d get this far in terms of recognition? Not really, but you always do things with the aim to achieve something. I was really pleased when I went Gold, and then I wanted to go Platinum! You set yourself goals, and when you’ve achieved them, a whole new set of goals appear. Tell us some of your personal highlights from the festivals you played recently. The Isle of Wight Festival was really special, because that was the first one I played at this year. Before that, I played to 8,000 people in a tent, which was overwhelming. But this year, I didn’t know what to expect: I got there, went to my dressing room and then walked on stage….there were about 80 or 90,000 thousand people there. I was very moved. Gold & Platinum discs are pretty amazing, but I do this because I want people to hear my music, and this is the physical evidence. The feeling of euphoria is amazing. So, would you say that performing live is more of a thrill than knowing you’re selling loads? I’m aware of the fact that I’m a better live performer than a recording artist, because I just thrive off the energy of the audience. When I played the festivals this year, I knew that only about ten percent of the audience knew who I was. But that made me competitive, wanting to win the rest of them over.

Where you get your visual inspiration? I’ve got a lot of stuff in my head: it’s chaos really! I went to art school and did an MA in directing theatre, so thoughts have been churning around for a long time. With this album, I was focussing on a vintage look. There’s a lot of theatre in there as well, but more on an arty rather than a musical level. It’s set in a fantastical world: I didn’t want anything to look realistic. I also reference a lot of iconic imagery, like Joan of Arc. What was it like working with Basement Jaxx? They’re very sweet guys: very nice, like normal people! Who else would you like to work with? I’ve always wanted to work with Cee Lo and Paolo Nutini. When is your second album due? Ideally I’d like it come out next year, but it depends when the label and I are happy with the end result. They haven’t put me under any pressure, but I write quite fast, because I like to keep the momentum going. What can we expect from your Plymouth show? I’m showcasing two songs from the next album, new versions of the already-existing songs and a couple of covers as well. But I want the covers to be a surprise! What’s coming next year, apart from the new album? I’ve got a film in the pipeline, which was suppose to be the start of next year, but it’s been pushed back because of funding, so I’m waiting to see what happens. There are talks of more TV as well, but nothing concrete. Paloma Faith plays at Plymouth Pavilions this month on Thursday 4th, 7pm. Tickets: £17.50. www.plymouthpavilions.com

Mark Chadwick talks about recording his new solo album in the South West, becoming inspired by the region and heading back to Devon and Cornwall to play with his former band, the Levellers. After staging the Beautiful Days Festival in Escot Park, Devon, with the Levellers; his band mates of eight years, former Levellers frontman Mark Chadwick tells he’s drawn influences for his solo album, All The Pieces, from the bands and buddies he encountered in Devon. “The scene down here definitely had an influence and I found myself working with so many great people during Beautiful Days, it was bound to be a part of the album.” Beautiful Days has no media partners, no outside sponsorship and does not advertise, relying instead on the loyalty of Levellers fans and the family atmosphere generated in this hippy festival, described by Guardian Festival Guide 2010 as “a big community garden party”. It’s feel good atmosphere that attracted bands as diverse as The Wailers, The Aggrolites and New Model Army to perform this year. Mark’s solo work has an acoustic folk feel; his autobiographical songs move away from the green anarchism and fiddle punk of the Levellers – a move that he found “surprisingly okay”, considering his twenty years fronting the band. This daunting move, which sees Chadwick move into new collaborative work was, he emphasises, due to; “time, just time and nothing else.” Talking of the Levellers he adds; “I’m working with them again next week.”

Showcasing the talents of Kathyrn Roberts (pal of Kate Rusby) on backing vocals and Sean Lakeman (brother of Seth) on bass, Mark’s album, All The Pieces, chronicles his disillusionment and journey through the music industry, dodging the grubbier, drug riddled tales of his former band mates, and concentrating on his personal voice. It’s generated mixed reviews. Describing the new work as “rocky but enjoyably different,” Mark sums up the tone of his new songs as “a gentle sidestep into a solo career.” Although Mark has made an assured move into new song writing territory, he maintains the subject matter is similar to Levelling the Land, released twenty years ago. “That album is still relevant, possibly more relevant now than it has been for a long time,” he says. Certainly the 2007 reissue of the album would herald its ongoing popularity with fans, a popularity he no doubt hopes rubs off during his future tour dates, as recent attendance of his gigs seem to reflect an Levellers based stigma. A stigma that may lift in the current political climate, who knows? Either way, this fervent folkie seems determined to keep going as long as the crowds will have him, which is a good while yet we reckon. Mark Chadwick plays with his old crew, the Levellers at Falmouth Princess Pavilion on November 20 and The Wharf Community Centre in Tavistock on November 21. Words: Helen Brown

Taking some time out from his second world tour, younger brother of the Australian brother-sister folk duo; Angus and Julia Stone, discusses touring, time in Cornwall, and the recent success of their second album, Down the Way. You guys are currently on the US leg of your second world tour and your second album reached number one in Australia, how have the past few months been for you. We had some time off and gathered our thoughts. We’ve been on the road for the past four months and all the shows have been mind blowing and wild from Australia to the US and through the UK and Europe. It’s all been really amazing. You’ve performed in the South West of England before and travelled through it, are you excited to return to it? Yeah, we love those parts. We’ve spent a lot of time in St. Agnes, Cornwall with friends. We actually recorded in Golant at a studio called Sawmills. What’s the dynamic between you and your sister when you’re touring and recording? Playing with Julia now, playing shows and touring around the world together, I see her more as a friend than a sister. We share the same passion and love for writing and doing what we do and it works. Hopefully, we’ll keep doing it until we get completely we get sick of each other! In France your album reached #5 in the charts, how do you think that your music translates across languages? It can translate across all languages and emotions as well for people that feel shut off from the world. People can let others in and find themselves in a song or a story or an experience and adjust themselves in a way that is personal to them but France has been pretty surprising, with the whole language boundary. What are some of your main influences? Anyone and everyone. Almost anyone I talk to I’m inspired by. There’s a lot of music I’ve been listening to lately, Laura Marling. 12 |

She’s an amazing artist I think we’re actually playing a show with Laura down the road, I’m really excited about it. Also, Iron and Wine and Willie Mason from the States. The first single from Down the Way “Big Jet Plane” sounds nostalgic on travelling and at the same time wayward looking. With having done so much travelling and touring, does that play a large part on each of your song writing? Being on the road has been a huge influence. We’ve been evolving as people and as artists and musicians, refining what we love and our skills. The road has been something that’s a part of me. If I had been at home sitting on the couch I still think that I would be doing what I do. The songs would have a little different flavour, and maybe I’d be more depressed. Your cover of “You’re the One that I want” from “Grease” is becoming a cult hit amongst fans, What made you cover and release it with the single “Big Jet Plane”? Julia covered that song, but we grew up in a house with a lot of musicians and musicals, Grease was one of them. There’s a lot of cool stuff in there. I only just watched it for the first time in ages and when that song came on it had a whole different meaning than when Julia does it, I love how songs can do that.
Angus and Julia Stone are currently touring through the US, Europe and Australia through February, but will be in the South West on December 10th at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth and December 11th at Trinity Centre in Bristol. Interview by Albert Testani

On November 6 the legendary drum n bass night Rinseout is holding its 7th birthday. They say a week is a long time in politics, well seven years for a club night, in dog years, is like forever. We caught up with the looks and brains behind the whole shebang, front and centre Mr Nice. When and why did you start Rinseout? It was 31st October 7 years ago, around 6 months after I took over Reform records, I wanted to get better recognition as a DJ and for me it was the next logical step to progress my career.
for their week long party there, I’m back out in Amsterdam again with them at the end of November. Have also had 2 trips to Germany, to Breman and Heidelberg I’ve never played Dj Hero, though some would say I need the practice, have you and was
What’s the key to its success? A lot of passion from myself and everyone that helps me with the night. Also a very supportive wife and family who have allowed me to follow my passion, through the good and the bad. I’ve been raving for 15 years and have taken what I’ve experienced and put that into a club night. We take the vibe seriously, as we want everyone there for the right reasons, to get into the music and have a good time.
you any good? I have, but to be honest my wife was better!
What’s your view on the whole vinyl / CD / laptop djing debate? I used to be a complete vinyl purist and that came from owning the record shop. If I was to be sent mp3 or wavs by artists that hadn’t been released yet, I couldn’t afford to cut them to Dub. I still play about 80% vinyl now though, however am more open to new formats as times change. Have the crowds changed much since you started the night? Not really, they are still very similar to what they were. There is another generation coming through now, we’ve gone through a couple of generations, you know people move away or go off to Uni. Rinseout has always had a very lively friendly crowd which I am proud of, as the guests we get always comment on that. If your club night was a soup what flavour would it be? Errm. I’m not really a big soup fan, maybe chicken and mushroom, I like anything a bit meaty. Are there any guest dj’s you haven’t had but would like to and why? Dj Marky, mainly because of his technical skills and selection. It’s tricky as he’s from Brazil but we are keen and persistent so watch this space..... Who’s been your favourite guest and why? It would have to be Andy C, I mean you expect him to be good but he seems to surpass himself every time he’s here. The best set I have seen him play to date was for us in the vapour tent at Glade in 2009, was so epic. Where else do you play? Mainly around the southwest, though a few years ago I hooked up with DJ Phantasy & Innovation and since then I’ve been lucky enough to play London several times, Amsterdam and Spain www.247magazine.co.uk
That’s excellent did you offer her a guest set? No, but maybe I should once she has had our baby boy, some backroom action in the future! If you had to get a proper job, not in the music industry, what would it be? I don’t know, something equally as fun, maybe testing weed out in California, a restaurant or round the world holiday critique. Your dj name, is it a tip of the hat to Howard Marks or a coincidence? It is indeed a tip of the hat, I did actually ask his permission though all those years ago, he said he hopes it brings me as much luck as it did him. Then several years later backstage at Glastonbury, he signed my programme from Mr Nice to Mr nice. What’s your all time favourite drum n bass tune? That’s a hard one but I think it would have to be Drop Top Caddy, the b side of Bad Ass by Aphrodite. Even when I drop this now it still gets a great reaction on the dancefloor. Classic. If you had to represent Exeter in “Britain’s got Talent” what would you do? I don’t know, maybe postering and or flyering. I could put up a record amount of posters in the shortest time for sure. Boring to watch maybe but a great skill. When you enter the dj edition of “come dine with me”, what would you make? It would have to be Fillet steak, with a peppercorn sauce and mash potatoes, my favourite meal. Chocolate mousse for desert and plenty of Rose wine.
Remix, Sign or Drop.
Our version of snog, marry, avoid. What would you do with Danny Byrd, Drake and Take that? Remix Danny Byrd Sign Drake Drop Take That, although I did have a soft spot for that “Never Forget” song back in the day….

Come Around Sundown Another KOL album, another set of guitar anthems for middle-aged boys to fill the post-Oasis vacuum; and another excuse for music hacks to bandy about the phrase ‘Southern rock’ as if the Allman Brothers never existed. So album number five. Any good? In parts. Caleb’s vocal range seems forever locked in the same ascending scale as ‘Sex On Fire’ but there’s a smoother, textured approach to the likes of ‘Radioactive’ that pay respects to kindred southerners, U2. ‘Mary’ is the first sign of anything that sticks, with its doo-wop framing and elongated melodies but there’s little here to maintain the legend that once held us in thrall to their beardy beauty.
Kylesa
Spiral Shadow
(Season Of Mist) Always ones to stick to their own agenda, the duelling-drummer delights of Georgia’s Kylesa gloriously eschew the man-metal remit to arrive at something altogether more widescreen. Exploring further into brooding psyche-rock territory, the title track is a triumphant and proud beast with one eye fixed firmly on tour buddies, Baroness. But when the band drop the big sonic bombs – ‘Cheating Synergy’, the toweringly ace ‘Tired Climb’ – they’re ten times more convincing than any of your testosterone-raddled try-hards. There are a few distinctly unexpected moments throughout (‘Back And Forth’, for instance, sounds like Fu Manchu smooching with Sonic Youth) but they serve only to enhance an album rich of texture and nuance. A treat.
3 Daft Monkeys
The Antiquated & The Arcane
(3DM) If The Levellers’ brand of parochial folk rock is too much for your fragile lug-holes, then 3DM could be the answer to your roots-lite prayers. The Cornish trio aren’t bad, it’s just that they have a knack of turning everything into the equivalent of daytime TV fodder. ‘Under One Sun’ has an interesting lilt but ‘Doors Of Perception’ is Jethro Tull drained of spirit and ‘Civilised Debauchery’ is Gogol Bordello in a comedy wig. Elsewhere, the aforementioned Levs leave their smudged fingerprints all over the place, minus one crucial element: great tunes. All credit to the Monkeys’ DIY ethos but that may also be why nobody has pointed out the bleeding obvious.
Les Savy Fav Root For Ruin
(Wichita) They may have enjoyed a brief love affair with the mainstream indie press a few years back (around the release of ‘Let’s Stay Friends’) but these Brooklyn art-punks were never ones to let it go to their heads. Album number five finds them in splendid fettle, opting for a curvaceous sound that honours their leftfield past but embraces a lateral sense of reflection. Reverbed guitars herald ‘Appetites’ as various mantras are repeated to giddy effect (and did Tim Harrington really just chant, “Show us your teeth and show us your tits”?); but it’s the beautiful despair-disco of ‘Sleepless In Silverlake’, with its Dismemberment Plan cadence, that betrays LSF’s inherent genius.

Carl Barat
Carl Barat’s genius songwriting and smooth What the hell is up with Canada, first Drake vocal skills are often overshadowed by his comes along and smashes the game right fellow-Libertine, Pete Doherty’s stunts & media open against all odds then I put this album on antics. His post-Libertines band, Dirty Pretty in the background while doing other things and Things should have got far more recognition it constantly pulls my attention with it’s beats and praise, and the fact that they didn’t is and the mc’s flow. If you like Justice League, down to stupidity and ignorance. This solo Little Brother or even some Common and Kweli debut should put the matter straight. His quirky then you should check this. Soul sampling style and trademark melancholy are all over it, productions and non jiggy subject matters, I’ve with orchestration and old-time arrangements just ordered his first two albums, this could be the aplenty. Every song is a winner: from the soulful best album I’ve heard in a long while. Who knew. stomp of Run With the Boys at one extreme, to the death march of Shadows Fall, at the other. Galaktus A beautifully dark but joyous set that should by Power cosmic rights be treated as a classic album. (Boot records) In the time when a lot of UK mc’s have taken the pop route it’s good to hear a UK hip hop album that appeals to the heads rather than 12 year olds. Kashmere the man behind this has been in the UK scene for a long time as both an mc and a producer. This album has quality productions and a decent flow with guest vocals by the legendary Jehst amongst others. If you love the sound of Low Life’s output then you should check this for sure.
This is UK Grime Various artists
(Defenders Entertainment) It says here that this is the first official grime compilation, that can’t be true can it? What we have here is a great introduction to the genre, standard and expected names such as Wiley, Skepta and Lethal Bizzle sit alongside the more underground chaps. It’s a tough choice here, you need to represent across the board musically to appeal to the masses and you need the names that have crossed over but I wouldn’t have put the likes of Bashy’s “Black Boys” on here. Overall though top marks and I’m sure this album will introduce some new talent to old farts like me and even some of the yout’ dem too.
Ice Cube
I am the west
(Lench Mob records) There was a time when Ice Cube was the hottest property in the rap game, I worked in a record shop when Lethal Injection dropped and people were losing their minds about it. I was never really that down with the west coast sound and in a culture where it’s all about keeping it real, can we really buy into an album about being gangsta and robbing people by someone who was in the film “Are We There Yet?”. The beats are okay, no amazing tracks but no dire ones either, the flow is still there just it’s too hard to separate the actor with the hood figure.
Ash
A-Z Volume 2
(Atomic Heart Records) A few years ago, Ash, fed up with releasing albums, decided to release only singles. This collection is part two of that series, featuring the final 13 singles, and it comes complete with all the Ash trademarks: soaring guitars, high energy pop-punk ethos and a tendency to slip into some naïve lyrics at times. Tim Wheeler sounds as fresh and youthful as ever, and melodically he still has plenty to offer. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before, but despite the length of time they’ve been together, Ash can still dish out lashings of good old teenage fodder. Good on them for sticking to their guns.
Colorama Box
(See Monkey Do Monkey Recordings) Welsh folkies’ first full-length album, packed with dreamy psychedelic goodness. The obvious reference points here are Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci and the lighter sides of Super Furry Animals, but not in a blatantly plagiaristic way. Singer, Carwyn Ellis is also at times reminiscent of a young Ray Davies, with some of the songs echoing The Kinks’ Village Green era. Autumnal captures all these elements with a gentle funked-out drum-beat. They wear their influences well, and even the artwork suggests a lost treasure from the late ‘60s. It’s very easy to get this kind of thing horribly wrong, but Colorama are armed to the teeth with brilliant songs, and Box is skilfully produced, to ensure its longevity.
Broken Records Let Me Come Home
(4AD) This second album from Scotland’s Broken Records sees them develop their recipe of textured & powerful guitar-driven songs with keyboards and strings providing space and depth. As before, drums play an important part, with plenty of crashing snares and cymbals accentuating elements of the more rocky songs. Frontman Jamie Sutherland has really found his voice on this album, with less of a tendency to wail for the sake of it. A Leaving Song and A Darkness Rises Up charge along, and there are also slower, darker moments, such as Dia Dos Namarados and The Motorcycle Boy Reigns. It’s all very serious, and pretty damn good. www.247magazine.co.uk

Distortion UK
www.myspace.com /distortionpunk Apologies, Distortion UK. I know you didn’t want K Ners has been repping Bristol for years and your album reviewed here but we had space just keeps on pushing further and further. His constraints, I’m afraid. ‘Verbal Weapons’ is the hard work is paying off and this heavyweight Truro quartet’s first album proper (released on link up with Kardinal Offishal is ready to pound their own Strange Behaviour Records) and, as dancefloors all over. Messy is the name and far as teeth-gnashing punk rock goes, it ain’t messy is the nature of this EP. On a big system too shabby at all. Opting for that early ‘80s, you won’t be able to stop yourself bouncing to this. The remixes come with the Dubstep second-wave punk rattle (think GBH, DOA), with touch from fellow Bristolian Mensah and New the odd Van Halen guitar noodle, ‘Shit Head’ and Zealands Beat Monkeys who bring a bass heavy ‘Bloody Slums’ see the band getting their whole version to the release. This EP is one to watch body behind the punch while ‘Pick Up Yourself’ out for, if you are into your bass heavy Bristol doffs its cap to early Bad Religion. It may not sound, this is the ticket for you! blaze a trail but it will fire up that latent anger in your belly. Concord Dawn

The Enemy Within (Uprising)
Concord Dawn delivers as usual with a collection of tunes that will be bouncing off of dancefloors from here to New Zealand. There are guest appearances from Bulletproof and Cern who are New Zealand D&B dons in their own right. Also you will pick up on a distinctive 80’s style vocal from Rikki Morris. You will find some tear out bangers but you will also come across a more deep, minimal sound. ‘Move’ ft JDubs and ‘One & Only’ ft Rido is one I am particularly looking forward dropping to see the crowd reaction but ‘The Enemy Within’ really does have a punch to it that will be devastating on a big rig. ‘Space Between Us’ is where you will find the deeper minimal sound if that is what you are looking for. A good all round package and an album that will go far, I would advise to give it a listen if you are into any style of D&B.
Crissy Chris and Youngman Give You The World
(Technique) Crissy Criss & Youngman have been churning out some dancefloor smashers recently and you will find some of them here. Some tunes aren’t as stand out but there is a good mix of genres to keep things fresh. Kick Snare is an obvious one that has blown up massively in its own right already with remixes doing the rounds, killing dancefloors at many a rave. ‘Give You The World’ is a D&B banger to look out for and ‘Bats’ brings a Dubstep flavour to the table. Harry Shotta features on a Hip Hop tune on this album as well so there is a nice variety here for you to get stuck in to.
Subscape
Time To Escape EP
(Dubpolice) Subscape releases have generally impressed me in the past and with tunes like ‘Nothings Wrong’ permanently staying in my record bag, it is no surprise that I was eagerly awaiting this EP. ‘Screw up’ and ‘Mr Kippling’ are dancefloor bangers to look out for on this EP whilst ‘Just Coz’ is a more laid back track. Dubpolice have come good with a nice variation of tunes bringing the heavy sound as well a lighter vibe. ‘All Day’ and has a fusion of grinding sub bass alongside a nice vocal that comes off well. This is a well thought out EP and well worth a buy for the Dubstep masses. If you are a regular Dubstep buyer, you will know they don’t often fail!

Shades of Blue
www.myspace.com/sofb Cornish resident, Mervin Hall, is a man of substance and conscience, but when he transforms those admirable qualities into song via Shades of Blue, the results are akin to Mr Bean lobbing bricks on a picket line. On new album, ‘Carbon Footprint’, the music inoffensively trundles along, incorporating blues-lite and washes of soft rock, with Hall’s voice brushing past the songs like a mild breeze, failing to impact upon the likes of ‘Crowded Room’ except in a faintly comical way. On the eco-friendly title track he opens up a bit only to sound like Randy Newman with the nodules – ie. character – removed. Fans of nothing in particular will probably love it.
40 Seasons
www.myspace. com/40seasonstheband North Cornwall quartet, 40 Seasons are one of those unfortunate bands who take all their basic chops from the mid-‘70s via the local ‘rock’ tavern – which means that they have little in the way of vision but still think they’re keeping the spirit of the legends alive. ‘Halos In The Mud’ is only a little more relevant than the after-cum that dribbles out of Robert Plant’s cock-hole on a Saturday night; while ‘Fly On The Wall’ starts out all poignant with references to the harrowing We Need To Talk About Kevin but never really fulfils its remit. ‘Calling You’ is slightly more promising but, ultimately, you’re left with a feeling of disenchantment. Shame.
Some Sort of Threat www.myspace.com/ somesortofthreat
Exeter teen troubadour, Rory Matthews, is back with another clutch of lo-fi acoustic ballads under his punk rock nom de plume, Some Sort Of Threat. With ‘Tangles’, nothing much has changed on the songwriting front: lots of words scuttling about over simply crafted and very brief folk ditties (nine in eleven minutes) with that faint air of melancholy seeping through the cracks. Just how we like it. ‘Over The Hill’ reverently chats of a street bum who sings like Tom Waits; while ‘Flinching’ and ‘That’s How Cool You’re Not’, with their self-referential yet bitter testimonies, sound like Frank Turner in his embryonic days. Grand.
Despite being one of the newer bands on the Bristol circuit, there is something about Centrefolds which makes you swear blind they’ve been around for years. Their debut EP, released earlier this year, is a hotpot of loud guitars, angsty lyrics and rocky vocals. While they nail the whole Green Day/Incubus sound there’s also a slight nod to the ever popular Matt Cardle from this year’s X-Factor with some falsetto vocals dragging In Your Blood from the mosh pit to the alter. Or not. When there’s less guitar and more vocals you’d be forgiven for lumping these guys in with the likes of The Bluetones, with catchy melodies and uplifting drums, and that’s no bad thing in my books!
Kitty and the Lost Boys www.myspace.com/ kittyandthelostboys
This female-fronted troupe describe themself as being from ‘deepest darkest Devon’ and I’m sure there are darker things in Devon, but they certainly wouldn’t be out of place in an 80’s Brat Pack or 90s US teen vampire flick. Upbeat and energetic, this sound is clearly influenced by some of those 80s greats Cyndi Lauper&Blondie though the sound isn’t dissimilar to those 90s Britpop female fronted bands Echobelly&Lush. Apologies for the reliance on comparisons to female fronted bands but there’s just no escaping it. The best place to hear this music would be in some bare-brick walled underground pub with a cider and black in hand all dolled up to the nines. Bring it on!
Romantic Rights
www.romanticrights.co.uk Sometimes you can tell by looking at a band’s logo, font and artwork exactly what they sound like. If that doesn’t work then you can usually at least partially trust the blurb that accompanies their music. Here you cannot. The artwork looks kind of electro and they are described as Daft Punk meets Muse but you will seriously struggle to put this Welsh band into one box. In places the production stands out like a sore thumb with them adopting a Super Mario type ditty which somehow turns into one of those generic dance songs you’d hear in the gym then they go rockier, like an electro Fall Out Boy (the horror!).
Nosferatu D2
www.myspace.com/nosferatud2 You can tell this Croydon duo are real music lovers as their debut self-titled album is brimming full of references to other musicians, from the straight-up titled Springsteen to We’ll Play The Power Of Love By Frankie Goes To Hollywood, they wear their hearts on their sleeve. But it’s the nod to the cheesetastic Shakin Stevens in Colonel Parker which steals the show. Nosferatu D2 (which let’s face it, ain’t the best name in the world) have the potential to be brilliant with nods to The National’s heavier stuff but sadly this all gets a bit frantic in places, like Frank Turner trying to do Eurodisco by Bis. Ultimately, they remind me of Feeder.

Johnny Knoxville and pals get crazy again. This kind of sequel to the hugely successful Jackass: The Movie sees the guys injuring themselves in inventive ways, but this time it’s in 3D. If you’re a masochist then this will be like heaven, others might find it a bit too much in 3D.

01803 839530 www.theflavel.org.uk Dir: Juan Jose Campanella Starring: Ricardo Darin, Soledad Villamil & Pablo Rago 2009/Argentina/130 min This film is a marvellously subversive guide to the history of the internet. Part documentary, part travelogue and a bit of investigative journalism trace contrasting responses to the web revolution. 11 Nov: Falmouth Phoenix,
01326 313072 www.merlincinemas.co.uk From visionary graphic artist and director Joann Sfar comes a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks, the illustrious and infamous Serge Gainsbourg. The film sees him growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris right through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s and onto to his death in 1991 at the age of 62. This roller-coaster biopic illuminates interesting areas of a relatively unknown (on these shores anyway) songwriter.
01326 313072 www.merlincinema.co.uk Dir: Joon-Ho Bong Starring: Kim Hye-ja, Won Bin, and Yoon Jae-Moon 2009/South Korea/129 min A devoted and deranged unnamed mother (Kim Hye-ja) obsessively conducts her own detective work in a bid to clear murder charges against her childlike adult son Do-joon (Won Bin). Taut, mysterious, and full of unsettling dark comedy and truly Hitchcockian in its murder mystery elements, this is another genre-bending success from one of Korean cinema’s brightest stars.

Lagging at the tail end of the festival season was Southsea Fest (Portsmouth, 18th Sept). The city was awash with an unsettling combination of indie kids and sneering beer drinkers but in the top bar of the Wine Vaults, punk rock was gleefully slapping itself on the back courtesy of ABOVE THEM (epically solid), APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE (anthemically splendid), THE CUT UPS (earnestly candid), and ATTACK! VIPERS! (darkly sordid). Over at the Wedgewood Rooms, LITTLE FISH were pouting their alt-pop wares to a static throng, but the jury’s out on their quasi-mainstream sensibilities. How hot? Too fucking hot. But the dripping walls didn’t stop LA bruisers, TERROR, from donning their best Sick Of It All hats and turning on the anti-racist hardcore charm before a slavering mass of slippery bodies (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 22nd Sept). When Hell On Earth headliners, EVERY TIME I DIE, stepped up, their hardcore-rooted, Southern metal explosion was classy, relentless and, much like my pungent, sweat-logged t-shirt, impossible to ignore. Opposite Number Promotions debut show at the Junction was an auspicious affair (Plymouth, 23rd Sept). American soloist, JEFF ROWE, played a clutch of honest folk vignettes before Cornwall’s AS WE SINK set out their mighty stall: raging, tight hardcore packed with substance and style. Headliners, Virginia’s LANDMINES, kept things fast and furious although their grizzly punk wiles failed to throw up any surprises. What a difference a great drummer makes. Plymouth trio, THE DAMERELS, bordered on magnificent as they tore the city a new, garage-punkin’ shit-hole (Junction, Plymouth, 6th Oct). Some spectacular riffs, some wild-eyed howling and some raunchy rhythms is sometimes all you need. FTO have modernised their hardcore racket and the results suit them well, caught half-way between Negative Approach and Poison The Well; while openers, folk-fi duo HEATHENS HOWL, did good battle with Beefheart-influenced off-kilter country. The preconceptions that surround piano-led pop-rock – easy listening, unchallenging, Elton John – don’t bother the PATRICK JAMES PEARSON BAND one little bit (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 8th Oct). That may have something to do with the immense power with which the trio tackle Patrick’s frequently astonishing songs of love and ire. And those effortless Korg hooks could be the stuff of legend once PJP gets himself on the national radar. Meanwhile, croon rock trio, THE XCERTS, proudly displayed the newly ripped sonic biceps of their second album, ‘Scatterbrain’, without losing sight of the plaintive melody. There’s something very special about Arizona’s ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD and their warmly eccentric folk oeuvre, and it all hinges on Jeff Rosenstock (Prince Albert, Brighton, 10th Oct). His slightly maniacal delivery and humourously jaded lyrics were the antidote to all those insipid acoustic whingers who clog up social networking sites, especially when he broke into the kind of hyper-speedy strumming that looked like it could end in sliced pinkies. KEPI GHOULIE was as gentle and simplistic as ever, his cartoon croon warming hearts with effeminate aplomb; Portsmouth’s ATTACK! VIPERS! provided intelligent post/ hardcore chops; and ex-Lightyear court jester, CHAS PALMERWILLIAMS, combined idiosyncratic humour and flaky singing to passable effect. Despite the tiresome insistence on those pesky walls of death, Plymouth growlers, DEAD POETS, provided the perfect soundtrack to a life of pain and temper tantrums, like Gallows with softer skin (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 15th Oct). But that’s not really me, so I’m off to listen to The Band and get in touch with my inner hillbilly. See-ya bye. Backbone (johnsycash@yahoo.co.uk)
