AGUA DE VALENCIA: FROM AVANT-GARDE TIPPLE TO BOTTLED SUPERMARKET TRAVESTY Agua de Valencia was first concocted by erstwhile artist and barman Constante Gil, who started serving it in his bar, the now sadly defunct Cervecería Madrid in C/ Abadía San Martín, in 1959. The bar, with its live piano music and its alcoves and poky corners, its walls decorated with Constante's collection of Impressionist-style ‘Tertulias de Café’ paintings (invariably depicting people sitting around a table enjoying a jar of the famous cocktail) was a classic of Valencia nightlife, especially through the years of the ‘transition’ to democracy and up until the mid-‘90s. So the story goes, a group of Basque salesmen who were regular visitors to Valencia, usually staying in the nearby Hotel Bristol, would spend their evenings in Constante's bar and would always order the best house cava, jokingly calling it “Agua de Bilbao” in honour of their homeland. “In Bilbao, the water is as good as this,” they would tell him. One evening, getting a bit tired of their banter, Constante said he would surprise them with something a bit different and that's how he

came up with ‘Agua de Valencia’, a mix of fresh orange juice, white spirits and cava. In the dark lonely nights of Franco’s ‘60s, and like the rest of Spain, nightlife hadn’t really taken off in a big way in Valencia. Constante was offering his mixture to customers every evening in his bar but few people had heard of it in other parts of the city. It wasn't until the ‘70s when the tired old regime was starting to be openly challenged and groups of beardy, wannabe Che Guevara students known at the time as progres would frequent bars like Cervecería Madrid to smoke too many Ducados and talk politics. As the universities were almost perpetually on strike, these largely middle-class revolutionaries had time on their hands to kick start Valencia nightlife and what were the first obvious signs of a Valencian youth culture. One of their favourite drinks was Agua de Valencia. It seemed to tick all the boxes. Girls liked it, its name chimed with their political struggle for autonomy, it had a hint of elegance, something more intellectual

and sophisticated than beer, it was cheap and it got you drunk. Here was a perfect cocktail for lefties and artistic types, to be drunk while listening to the music of Maria del Mar Bonet or Raimon. By the 1980s, Agua de Valencia had become THE drink of the Valencia scene. It was especially popular amongst students as, just like its bastard son, the cubalitro, and the present day botellón, it was made for sharing and was relatively inexpensive in those days. You would order a jug and enough glasses for everyone. Agua de Valencia was available in the dozens of new bars opening up in the Carmen and quickly spread to other up-and-coming areas of the city like Xúquer, Ciudad Jardín, Cánovas and Juan Llorens. As often happens with these things, it was the widespread popularity of Agua de Valencia which finally led to its downfall. Mass sales meant a drop in quality, especially in the spirits used to mix the drink, and freshly squeezed orange juice was increasingly replaced by bottled juice. Article © 2012/13 24/ 7 Valencia

The centre of the whole Agua de Valencia scene had moved to Café de Paris in the town centre, which was extremely popular then and also had a branch on C/ Doctor Manuel Candela. Café Paris had a long list of ‘Aguas’ from anywhere you can think of; Agua de Dublín, Agua de Londres, Agua de Estambul, de Milán and even, for some reason, Agua de Leeds. Each of these was a different colour, with impossible combinations of cordials and low-quality alcohol which were to blame for many a Sunday morning bad head in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Much to the horror of most Valencianos, Agua de Valencia was even bottled and sold in supermarkets. The drink’s popularity had reached its peak and suddenly it fell out of fashion at the end of the ‘90s. Hector, the owner of La Salamandra, a small bar with a wonderfully welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and a large terrace on a popular corner of Plaza Xúquer, has been a witness to the comings and goings of Valencia nightlife over the last thirty years. He believes that it was mass production that nearly killed Agua de Valencia off. “People realised it was getting more and more expensive and because the bars weren’t taking any care in its preparation and ingredients, it didn’t seem to taste very good anymore,” he told us. “Agua de Valencia is freshly squeezed oranges with the right mix of spirits and half-decent cava, the bars weren’t providing that, and don’t get me started on that bottled stuff they sell to tourists.” The drink is still popular in his bar, mostly drunk by couples. For Hector it is important to get the mix right and, according to him, the proportions just don’t work in a big one

or two-litre beer jug. “It’s a social drink, but it should only be served in small jugs for two people. If you want more, then I’ll make you a fresh jug.” A true purist, he prefers to do the job properly or not at all. He even says if the oranges aren’t sweet enough, it’s not worth making it: “Adding sugar to sweeten the orange juice just shouldn’t be an option.” The area of the city most associated with Agua de Valencia is the Barrio del Carmen and if you are only going to try it once, it ought to be in a place like Café Sant Jaume on C/ Caballeros or Radio City on C/ Santa Teresa. Two of the area's longest standing bars which typify the old ‘barrio’, both of which have strong claims to have been making and selling Agua de Valencia longer than any other bar in the city now that Cervecería Madrid no longer exists. Even though demand isn't what it was in its heyday, they still get through plenty of jugs of the drink. According to the people at Sant Jaume: “A lot of tourists who have found the bar in a guide, or on the Internet, come to our place especially to order Agua de Valencia. There are local people who’ve been coming back here regularly since the very beginning to enjoy the odd glass. Also couples often order it, or mixed groups of men and women. Men on their own, for example, don't usually order it and these days it's not a cheap drink, so it's not so popular with younger customers who can get two or three beers for the price of a glass”. In the Barrio de Ruzafa, a classic place for Agua de Valencia is Cafè Tocado in C/ Cádiz, a bar in the heart of the area with live music and theatre whose decor puts you in mind of a ‘cabaret’ from the ‘Belle

Epoque’. Like all the classic Agua de Valencia bars we've mentioned, they go for quality ingredients but this being Ruzafa, unlike the bars in the centre, they don't attract so many tourists. They told us that although it’s still a staple, other drinks have replaced Agua de Valencia in popularity: “It's normally drunk by groups and couples, usually people over 30. Younger people these days tend to go for more fashionable drinks like caipirinhas or mojitos. Having said that, the drink is a classic, we've always served it and it’s always been in demand.” So how do you make it? Every bar does it their own way, some add cava, and some don't. Most places keep the exact recipe to themselves but we did pick up a few tips. Anywhere worth its salt will use freshly squeezed orange juice with sweet oranges so sugar is not necessary and a mixture of good quality white spirits. We were also told never to use orange-flavoured liqueurs like Cointreau or Curaçao, as they don’t blend well with the orange juice. David Rhead and José Marín

DIABLITO TANGO Who are Diablito Tango? Diablito Tango mixes traditional tangos with French chanson and a bit of jazz. The group is an unusual trio of bandoneón (a type of concertina commonly used in tango), double bass and voice whose members are from Argentina, the USA and France in that order. Diablito Tango started in 2009 as a duo and later added the voice of Nesrine Belmokh to create one of the most exciting groups on the Valencia music scene. The three members are also musicians of the Palau de les Arts Opera Orchestra and have diverse musical backgrounds, which bring an exciting mixture of sounds. How do you find Valencia for recording and live music? We find that in Valencia there is a very loyal audience that follow the concerts of the music scene here and encourage the musicians to keep working on bringing music to the community. The economic downturn in Spain has had quite an effect over the last three years on the number of concert venues as well as the volume of concerts in Valencia, but the remaining clubs and concert halls have proven themselves very dedicated to maintaining quality programming. These things usually swing in cycles and we can hope for a return to the levels of live music that were happening in 2007. For the recording situation, Diablito Tango was very fortunate to find Café Mercedes

Jazz club and Comboi Records, both businesses being related to Ruzafa. Beyond being one of the cornerstone clubs in promoting live music in Valencia, Café Mercedes Jazz now has the ability to record with the very good ambient acoustics of their main room, which was a great setting for producing our first CD. With the help of Comboi Records (and our family and friends), we managed to bring out the CD, which has proven to be a great success for us. Tell us about your recent tour of the U.S.A. The tour was conceived by our double bassist, Matt Baker, who organized a series of eight concerts in important venues in the Midwest of the U.S. All of the concerts were enthusiastically received and Diablito Tango has been invited back for repeat performances in two years. Our concerts included venues such as chamber music recital series, jazz clubs, tango clubs, theatres, universities, and the National Music Museum, and were given to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The audiences were so excited by the music that we managed to sell out all of our many CDs that we brought along – next time we will know to take more! 4. Take us through the songs of your new album, Diablito Tango. The CD contains 15 songs that represent the creative process we experienced from the creation of the group until now. The songs are arranged mainly by the bandoneón player, Javier Cárdenas, but they become

more personal with the interaction of the three musicians during the performances. Tangos which are included in the CD are: “El Día que Me Quieras”, “Cuesta Abajo”, “Nostalgias”, “Niebla del Riachuelo” and more. There are also milongas such as “Se Dice de Mí” and “Milonga Sentimental” that are a bit more up-tempo. We have also included songs such as Robert Johnson’s “Come On in My Kitchen” and “Whatever Lola Wants” that evoke more of the American traditional music from the same period as the tango. In the same vein for chanson, we have included a memorable version of the famous “La Javanaise” by Serge Gainsbourg. 5. Where can we see you play in Valencia in the coming months? Our next concert in Valencia is on 1 December at 20.00h in the Galería Color Elefante (C/ Sevilla, 26 in Ruzafa). A Tale of Two Mince Pies ‘Traditional and Radical’ for Christmas By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Around about this time of year you may be starting to get a little hot under the collar. That panic of not being able to go into any shop and sweep a jar of mincemeat or even ‘ready-made’ mince pies off the shelf! Love them or hate them, like Satsumas, Christmas is not the same without them! But panic not! Making your own batch of mincemeat is not so hard. And the bonuses are no additives of E’s and you can dose it up with the liquor of your fancy to your heart’s content. As the name suggests, the mincemeat of mince pies was originally made with meat, sweetly spiced. It is one of the many recipes brought back from the Middle East, smuggled beneath the armour of the crusading knights, during the Holy Wars of the 11th – 13th centuries. Being a Holy War recipe, there are also meant to be 13 ingredients symbolizing Christ and the 12 apostles, but in Spain we don’t need that extra layer of lard to keep us warm, so we are going less ‘holy’ without the suet and chunks of lamb. It is best to make the mincemeat in bulk and then store it, sealed in Kilner glass storage jars – ready for action. For our pastry we offer both one traditional version with short butter shortcrust pastry that melts in your mouth and Jamie Oliver’s radical filo and puff pastry version to rock your friends’ socks off! In a large saucepan, dissolve the sugar in the cider over a gentle heat. Add the roughly chopped apples to the saucepan. Add all the ingredients, apart from brandy/ rum and simmer for around 30 minutes until everything has a pulpy consistency. Take off the heat and when it has cooled slightly stir in brandy/rum. Store in sterilised jars with tightly fitting lids. To make the pastry, rub the butter into the

Mincemeat filling • Makes about 2kg • 250 gm soft dark brown sugar • 250 ml medium dry cider • 1 kg cooking apples, peeled, halved and quartered • 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 250 gm currants • 250 gm raisins • 75 gm glace cherries, roughly chopped • 75 gm blanched almonds, • Finely chopped rind and juice of 1/2 lemon • 6 tablespoons brandy or rum

Traditional Shortcrust pastry • 225 gm cold butter, diced • 350 gm plain flour • 100 gm golden caster sugar • 280 gm mincemeat • 1 small egg, beaten • Icing sugar, to dust

will stick on their own. (The pies may now be frozen for up to 1 month). Brush the tops of the pies with the beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with icing sugar. They will keep for 3 – 4 days in an airtight container. JAMIE OLIVER VERSION: 2 cupcake trays (12 cups each) 250 gm puff pastry (plus flour to dust rolling board) 1 packet filo pastry Melted butter for brushing 1 egg, beaten Icing sugar For the Jamie Oliver version, roll out puff pastry, spread your mincemeat mix over the sheet, then roll up tightly, Swiss roll-style and leave to rest in fridge for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, lay a sheet of filo pastry over each of two lightly buttered 12-cup cupcake trays, and push lightly into the holes (you may need 4 sheets of filo). Take your puff pastry out of the fridge and cut into 24 neat rolls. Place gently into the holes that are covered by the filo. Brush with butter and then cover with another layer of filo pastry. Sprinkle with flaked almonds, brush with egg and pop in the oven at 200C for about 20 minutes. Leave to cool and then crack out of the trays. Sprinkle with icing sugar when cool and serve.

flour lightly, and then mix in the sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball – don't add liquid – and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough. You can use the dough immediately, or chill for later. Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas 6 / Fan 180C. Line 18 holes of two 12-hole patty tins (or if you haven’t got these, cupcake trays). Roll out the pastry gently (without squashing) and with a round cutter cut the rounds for the patty tin/or cupcake trays. Spoon the mincemeat into the pies. Take slightly smaller balls of pastry than before and pat them out between your hands to make round lids, big enough to cover the pies and snip a hole with scissors to let out the steam. Alternatively, make star-shaped tops. Top the pies with their lids, pressing the edges gently together to seal – you don't need to seal them with milk or egg as they

33 LOUNGE RESTAURANT I first reviewed this restaurant at least eight years ago, when it was slightly more centrally located. I remember having a great meal then, so I was looking forward to a return visit to this, their new and much larger home around the corner from the Mercado Mosén Sorell in the Barrio del Carmen. For lovers of ‘50s and ‘60s kitsch, Lounge 33 is a little bit of heaven; cabinets heaving with vases, ashtrays, lights and even Polaroid cameras from the period are dotted around the restaurant. Long, picture rail height shelves along both sides carry a collection of brightly coloured glass vases. Behind the bar is a huge, backlit black and white image of a ‘60s fashion model against an op art background. D and I arrived on time (a miracle!) on a very cold night and were greeted by Carlos and José, the duo who run 33. José cooks and Carlos is the very entertaining and pleasant front of house. We chatted for a while and then settled ourselves down to enjoy what was to be a long list of dishes. We were given a very welcome glass of P’alegrarte vino tinto (the house wine bottled in Utiel – Requena) and a couple of croquetas, crispy coated with a perfectly cooked centre of ham, béchamel and potato to get our taste buds going. This was followed by a bowl of hot soup, a delightful mix of carrot and chestnut with a sprinkling of pine nuts, served in an original way, glass upon a glass. So began our gastronomic feast! Our next course was a fishy number, Rollito de merluza, puerros y marisco – hake, leeks and seafood

creamed together and wrapped in crispy filo pastry. A delicate carpaccio of calamari followed - finely, finely sliced squid sprinkled with smoky paprika and marinated, delicious! By now we were getting pretty full, but the cod cooked in honey and alioli, accompanied by three types of homemade crisps made from bonito, yucca and potato, was just lovely. We now needed a little rest and took the time to look at the fascinating collection of kitsch vintage artefacts in the cabinets around 33. Most were for sale and we thought were very well priced. We will definitely be popping back to get some Christmas presents.

We were now ready for our last main course, a Confit de pato con salsa de naranja – leg of duck confit and delicately flavoured with an orange sauce, really tender and not too sweet. And finally we were persuaded to try some small samples of the desserts – hardly small, but four delights to try! An unusual twist to the ubiquitous flan, a crème caramel with a hint of rosemary, a coconut and white chocolate mousse with an espuma (foam) of toffee, and a slice of pumpkin cake, all equally delicious. PLOU i FA SOL (Organic Shop) Sonia and Soledad speak English and Spanish and both of them lived for a long period in London before returning to their native Spain to set up the charmingly named ‘Plou i Fa Sol’ (‘Rain or Shine’ in Valenciano). We’ve been visiting their shop in the historic centre since it first opened and often stop by for interesting chats and to check out their quality, ecofriendly products. “We wanted to do something we feel happy about. We didn’t want to have a boss. We were planning to do something that will benefit everyone because we didn't want to collaborate with an economic system we don't feel sure about. We felt we wanted something different. Something special. Our long experience abroad in England and our professional backgrounds (pharmacist and biologist) motivated us to try to earn a living based on these premises. Ecology, food, sustainability, health and fair trade all joined together under the same concept, one that is more European than traditional. We knew that the Barrio del Carmen would love our project. Saca Los Pañuelos Valencia Club de Fútbol is now on the lookout for a new manager after the fulminante sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino after another disastrous defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad. The fact that Valencia played with ten men for much of the match has a lot to do with the final 2-5 score line, but it had more to do with the attitude or lack of it shown by several players. Once again a mixture of a fickle fan base and an unruly dressing room has put paid to the managerial career of an up-andcoming entrenador. The Valencia fans and some players couldn’t stand the sight of Unai Emery and made it visibly clear they wanted him out, they got their way via some poor on-the-field performances and plenty of white hanky waving. The new man brought in was Pellegrino, ‘El Flaco’, and as a former player who played through the glory years, he was welcomed by the

fans until they realised that he had never actually managed a club before. Almost immediately he was faced with the petty squabbles and unrest that occur within the dressing room and it seems that he and his coaching staff were not too keen to massage the swollen egos of several prima donnas. As a footballer, Pellegrino was strong and firm and it would appear that this attitude towards the players has not been successful. Now a majority of the Mestalla (un)faithful are voting that President Llorente should pick up the phone and ring young Luis Aragonés and ask him if he wants another spell at the Valencia helm. The problem being that, at 74 years old, he probably is just a little past it, but this just goes to show the depth of footballing knowledge that many who scream and shout at the players, referee, manager and president actually have. Before that game, the blanc i negres had to travel to Valladolid to take on Valencia old boy Miroslav Djukic’s team. An early goal from Cissokho put the visitors into an early lead and when Soldado scored another in the second half, it seemed to be all over. Unfortunately the referee disallowed the goal for a non-existent offside and a few second later conjured up a non-existent penalty for Valladolid and sent Cissokho off for good measure! later, when the referee invented a penalty in favour of Valencia in the last minute to ensure a totally unmerited 2-1 victory over bottom team Espanyol. Pellegrino himself admitted that his team did not deserve to win and the Mestalla crowd agreed as they waved their hankies continually throughout the second half. Next up were the mighty Bayern Munich and after yet another red card for Valencia, this time for Antonio Barragán, it appeared that the home team were going to suffer a defeat. However, they played their best game of the season to date. The 10 men left on the pitch gave everything, harassing and running, not allowing the Bavarians a second to construct any sort of game plan. A Feghouli goal with 10 minutes to spare seemed to have assured an improbable victory until, yet again, the Germans had to go and ruin the party with an equalizer. But the vital point meant that Valencia would progress to the knockout round. Back in the league, the tired team visited Málaga who, replete with their expensive footballers (who are still waiting to get paid), gave Valencia a real drubbing. The Chés were as bad against Málaga as they were good against Bayern. It was pitiful to watch but the home team could only put the game to bed in the last 15 minutes when Pellegrino’s team had nothing left in the tank. The 4-0 result was a fair reflection of a team who had seemingly run out of steam and ideas.

Who will take over? I sincerely hope that it will not be Aragonés, maybe a young trainer with experience like Pochettino could be the answer but VCF at this time is a club divided, with rifts between players, officials and the fan base. Whoever decides to step in will have a rollercoaster journey. In December, they will take on Osasuna, Rayo, and Getafe whilst in the New Year they will face Granada, Real Madrid, Deportivo and then Barça, any volunteers? Meanwhile, a mile away at Orriols, Levante keep on chipping away, carving out valuable points against Sevilla and Deportivo whilst suffering defeats to Real Madrid and Barcelona. The granotas’ Xmas fixture list offers winnable ties that could see them cement their fourth place in the table, who would have thought that at the beginning of the season?

An insignificant victory in the King’s Cup against Llagostera only served to further tire the legs of the Valencia squad and there were probably more people on the pitch than in the stands to see the 3-1 win. There were not many more to see what would be the last game in charge for Pellegrino against Real Sociedad. After taking yet another early lead, Valencia were incapable of sentencing the tie, a feat made even more difficult following another red card, this time for Jonas after elbowing an opponent. The team then faded away in the second half and the Basque visitors won 2-5. The fans bayed for blood demanding the head of President Llorente. Then, after taking into account the terrible events in the Madrid Arena, some stupid idiot let off a flare in the VIP stands. It was all too much for the VCF hierarchy to take and so they offered up the head of the unfortunate Flaco.

The Spain Drain As Spain’s recession drags on and deepens, many are now looking to find jobs abroad. There are popular fly-on-the-wall programmes on TV such as Españoles por el Mundo (Spaniards Around the World) that paint a rosy picture of life abroad for Spanish emigrants with nice jobs. However, such programmes omit to mention the fact that the people they show are usually highly qualified and speak the local lingo very well. Some Spanish people have tried their luck abroad in wealthier countries, only to find that the language education they have received back home is woefully inadequate in the real world. I know of some cases where people have used up what was left of their dole money to go abroad in search of work, only to find themselves homeless and speechless in Berlin and London. Spanish people often exaggerate their foreign language level on their CVs, saying “intermediate” when they mean “beginner,” etc. – or perhaps this is what they honestly believe. Many joke or brush aside Spain’s infamous inability to speak foreign languages, saying “The Spanish aren’t very good at learning languages.” This is particularly shocking when you hear it from the educators themselves, some of them in very authoritative posts. People with such an opinion should never have entered the teaching profession in the first place, in my view. Perhaps they should really say, “The Spanish aren’t very good at teaching Article © 2012/13 24/ 7 Valencia

languages,” which would be far nearer the truth. On completing their time in the state education system, the typical Spanish citizen has had well over 10 years of English tuition. Even so, every September you will see huge queues snaking round the Official Schools of Languages (public adult tuition centres) to start Level 1 of English. So just what have they been doing for those previous ten years? Well, generally, they’ve been painstakingly copying grammar (philology) off blackboards and doing gapfill and multiple-choice tests. But they have hardly spoken or heard a word of native English. As an English teacher myself many moons ago, I once came into a high school class of 14-year-olds to see that the blackboard had yet to be cleaned from the previous class of Valencian language. What I saw on that board looked to me like something out of a philology PhD thesis. A well-known Spanish linguist once told me, “Spain produces a great many excellent philologists. It’s a shame they can’t write or speak properly.” And herein lies the problem, which is not only restricted to language teaching. From what I have seen of the Spanish education system, there is a lot of theory and very little practice. Provided you can regurgitate mountains of information parrot-like on the day of the exam, you will get a good grade.

This is essential in a country where having the right certificates is the most important key to getting a decent job. But philology is to language what biochemistry is to oenology. It is one thing to know all about the English subjunctive or the effects of polymerised phenols in wine, but quite another to use the English subjunctive without pausing to think in a conversation, or simply to recognise the taste of tannins. I myself learned Spanish and Valencian from books (and immersion in the country), a fact that often surprises those who know me, especially as I now make a very good living out of this knowledge. My theory as to education is that we could actually do away with secondary state schools and replace them with big state libraries (which are shamefully scarce and ill-equipped in Spain). Children of school age would still have to study for exams and pass them, but they would be left to study by themselves. Today’s teachers would become monitors and tutors, available in the library to help when asked. Not only would this help children learn to study by themselves, it would save Spanish parents a lot of money on textbooks (they have to buy an entire set of new ones every year, even though the subjects being studied are very much the same). Spanish education is also still very much a political football anyhow. Left-wing

governments try to teach liberal social views, whereas today’s government leans towards a standard Catholic education (I use the word today in the purely chronological sense). In any case, the government’s educational priorities are there for all to see. Near the outrageously expensive, government-funded buildings in the city’s riverbed, you may also see some portacabins peeping between the highrises. These are not there to house building workers on some of the aforementioned unfinished buildings, since the budget has run out. They are state school classrooms. Thus are the Valencia government’s priorities (and those of their voters). In these dire economic times, it is also worth mentioning Spain’s lack of investment in scientific R&D. The countries which are now pulling out of the recession have not cut back on this vital economic motor, whereas Spain is now lagging behind even Portugal. This does not mean that Spain does not invest in scientific education. However, after they have spent a huge sum on training their scientists, they then cut funding to research so that these scientists have to look for work abroad. It’s a little like Real Madrid training brilliant football players only to give them away to Bayern Munich to thrash them in the Champions League. But of course that doesn’t happen in football, where Spain acts with more intelligence. Another aspect that sometimes bemuses me is how people seem to choose a public teaching job late in life as a second option

and switch from subject to subject. I have friends who have become secondary school English teachers after taking the necessary exams; before this they were music teachers and bank clerks. It’s a little like the way government ministers switch from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of the Economy or Science, etc., as if they suddenly know all there is to know to run the country’s armed forces, finances or scientific research at the drop of a hat (which they clearly do not). But as I have said, provided they have passed the extremely theoretical exams (i.e., English philology), they are then given a bit of paper that says they can teach English (i.e., English communication). A friend who is a secondary school teacher told me of a colleague who went to study English at the Official School of Languages and told her it was “really difficult”. This would not be surprising if not for the fact that the person who said this actually teaches English herself.

I know of only a few native English speakers who actually teach their language in the public sector, but plenty in the private sector. This is mainly because the bureaucratic obstacles scare them off (as happened to me), as they do for jobs in any public sector profession, including tourism. It is hardly surprising, then, that one of the few sectors of the Spanish economy that is not feeling the recession is the business of private language academies. Whenever I go back to the UK, people usually take one look at me and say, “Weren't you living in Spain?” It’s always beyond them that it can actually get cold here. But we residents of Valencia know, don't we? Right now I'm typing in fingerless gloves with a heater under the desk. I'm that cold. Yet I remember the first Christmas I ever spent in Spain, many, many moons ago when I was just a little girl. We had a delicious, exquisite lunch up in the hills on a bright sunny day. It wasn't your traditional turkey, we had lamb cutlets so succulent the meat slipped off the bone, but I remember not being able to enjoy the food, stifling as I was in my blue velvet best dress. With long sleeves. And itchy tights. (Tights are always itchy when one's a little girl, aren't they?). I remember at the time being not too sure about the idea of living in a country where it's hot on Christmas Day. We're not Down Under, after all, and what was Summer going to be like if it was this warm then? Since then, global warming has ensured that it's always cold now in Winter, and boy I'm grateful (though obviously worried and doing my bit for the environment at the same time, don't get me wrong. I ride a bike. I recycle. I turn the tap off when brushing my teeth). I love to wrap up in tons of layers, just like I am right now. It's reaffirming of the passage of time, the changing of the seasons, makes you realise you're getting old, and all that jazz. And although times are really tough for everybody I know at the moment, just spotting a string of Christmas lights strewn across a shop front, or a tree being put up inside someone's window, or even the highest level of naff, a Santa climbing up

and nibbles under the pretence that it’s a lovely fun evening in together in true Christmas spirit. We all have one of those perfectionist friends, who when faced with reverse psychology is the first person to take over and just do it all themselves. I am that friend for the first half-an-hour and the last, to make sure it’s all exactly as I like, but getting someone else on the hard slog in the meantime while I put silly wigs on, do a dance, top up glasses and provide general entertainment. And this year I will probably Instagram it all. Hashtag Christmas hashtag friends hashtag love.

a balcony, reminds me that 'tis the season to be jolly, Fa La La La La La La La La, and I feel all warm inside, like I'm the star of a John Lewis Christmas ad. This is my favourite time of year, and I like to force it down everyone else's throats, whether they like it or not. I am excited for our annual get-together to decorate the tree, but let's face it, I do have slightly ulterior motives behind that event. I'm not going to lie to you, it sounds like a sweet, romantic scene from a slushy movie – you go to pick out the tree, sing carols and drink mulled wine all smiley in tacky jumpers, but the bits they cut from the film, in between those moments? Well, they suck. The tree doesn't fit in the car. You snap off a few branches in the boot door, then the front door, then the living room door. There are pine needles everywhere, for days. Until at least August. The lights are always tangled up, however well you put them away last year, and when you finally plug them in, at least five bulbs have fused and you can't find the spares. The matchymatchy baubles that looked so pretty last year are missing, and you're left with a few squashed snowmen and an assortment of snowflakes, all of which have somehow lost the hook they hang from during the year they've spent inside the box. The boys, having made and drunk the mulled wine and tried to prove their manliness by fixing the lights, which you end up doing, have lost interest and are playing video games. My ulterior motive is to get it done by someone else, whilst providing beverages

Another thing I like about this time of year, being the sartorial magpie that I am, is dressing up in sparkly things and hitting the town. For more wine. Ongoing dilemma though – what to do at New Year's Eve? Every year Lolita and I have done the entertaining at our house, but times are hard and some of our bestest friends have gone off to distant lands in search of work and won't be coming back to ring in 2013, boo hoo. So we don't especially feel like celebrating at home like old times, and are thinking of letting someone else get their hands dirty and be a hostess for once. There are a few house party invitations in the mix, but also my e-mail inbox is beginning to be inundated with fun plans to be made in and around Valencia's seriously buzzing nightlife – a few of my more laidback friends are headed to Juanita for a Reggae Party, there's some ska and jazz going down at the Rocksteady Beatz night at Dub Club and the more rockabilly types are headed to Pinball, where they're open 'til dawn! Then you've got SupermartXé straight from Ibiza at Mya, and special (and probably overpriced) nights held at clubs all over the City. We are spoilt for choice, to be honest, so it's just a question of making a decision! Whatever you do, make sure it’s with people you love and if you see me shimmering around in sequins and skyhigh heels, come and wish me a Merry Christmas! I will be brimming with holiday spirit, and not just the Absolut kind. See you next year, dear readers!

24/7 VALENCIA bottle, please). So the idea of this column is to give you a pubbers / clubbers guide to different areas of Valencia. For this edition, we are going to start with the Barrio del Carmen.

What has happened to Valencia’s nightlife? With over 10 years experience under my belt and on the eve of my 30th birthday, with all the best intentions in the world of partying until the early hours of the morning, it pains me to say it or even to write it down on paper, but I haven't been able to come up with a kick-ass nightclub to end the night in. Nowadays, if you’re between 15 and 22 years of age, Valencia still has a lot to offer, smoking hot people, go-go dancers, Erasmus nights, but one main thing has changed... WHERE HAS THE MUSIC GONE? Valencia used to be known in the late ‘80s and ‘90s for the ‘ruta del bakalao’, basically a Mecca for all Spanish clubbers who wanted to start partying on Thursday and finish just in time for work on Monday…AWESOME! (insert American voice). Don't get me wrong, there are still good clubs, but they're not as consistent as before, you can't go to a club one night, have a great time, rock up a week later with loads more mates and expect the same. If you do, you will be sorely disappointed. To tell you the truth, all of the big clubs have roughly two nights per month where you can party like it’s 1999. Whether it’s the crisis or just plain laziness, that's the truth. But I will tell you one thing, all is not lost. In this dark age for clubbers, a new hero has arisen, one which has been dormant for a long time, one which is now bogged than before...the pubs are back in town! All over Valencia there are exciting new pubs and restaurants offering all types of live music and entertainment for a range of tastes and age groups. Due to this, the older, more recognised pubs can’t just do the same thing as they have been getting away with for years. They have had to reinvent themselves hiring bands, giving away tapas with drinks, even happy hours are starting to pop up around town...it's amazing! The music is always a lottery but what you can predict is the ambiance (I'll take the

The old town of Valencia is by far the most bohemian part of Valencia, with a mix and match of many different backgrounds and styles. Of course, you have the men selling sunglasses and trying to sell hideous cheap beer, but I'm not talking about them. I mean the pijo (posho) with his wife brushing up next to a punk rocker with his murky crew in a swanky restaurant tucked away down a back alley, which is refreshingly not overpriced. Or ridiculously good-looking people (I'm talking model-worthy) sat down in Plaza Tossal cracking open a horrible green cerveza with the homeless in the neighbourhood. If that happened in most other cities around the world – Barcelona, New York, Rio – there would be fights, muggings, you name it! Maybe Valencianos don't realise it as much, but for any foreigner living in Valencia, one of the best things about living here is how safe we feel. I love the fact whether you’re a boy or girl, gay or straight, unless you are really unlucky, nothing bad normally happens to you. It's a city where the policy is still, “Make love, not war”. Cool as funk! OK, let's get started. The best way to start any good night out is a nice meal in one of the many restaurants in the area you are planning to smash it up in. My personal favourite in the Carmen is Paparazzi (C/Baja, 42, Tel: 96 315 45 88 / 675 399 355). This has an excellent set menu of Mediterranean dishes with lots of variety for only 14€, and lovely bottles of affordable wine. The staff are great and they can always get you discounts for wherever you want to go nearby. My other option would be Lolita y Sibaritas (C/ Caballeros, 10, Tel: 96 392 44 95) –they also have an impressive set menu for just 16€ and the fusion food and service are great. But if you just fancy a pre-match drink to start up the engines, they serve the biggest and tastiest mojitos in town! They do have an advantage, though, as all the staff are Latin and having been making the cocktail since birth. Expect to find lively music and don't be surprised to find people dancing on the bar Coyote ugly style! Next, pop over the road to Los Picapiedra (C/ Caballeros, 25, Tel: 96 391 98 76). Get

yourself a litre jug of beer, cider or calimocho (red wine and Coke) for just 7€! Great bar to sample the barrio’s alternative flavour and integrate with the locals. After that, stick your head into the funky Fox Congo (C/Caballeros 35, Tel: 96 392 55 27) and see what's going on, but don't waste too much time as we have a long way to go! If you would like a fiveminute (unpaid) dance with a Latin@, step into Johnny Maracas (C/ Caballeros, 39, Tel: 96 391 52 66) next-door …but if not, bowl down to Bolsería (C/ Bolseria, 41, Tel: 96 391 89 03). Bolsería will always have good chunk of the Carmen’s party people in there, but it all depends on which kind of people you roll with, and of course you will have to be able to stand the typical commercial house music you find in all these types of places around Valencia. Next, I would go to the end of the road to Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19, Tel: 96 391 41 51) where you are always guaranteed a laugh and a giggle. It’s a cosmopolitan crowd and the people are down to earth and well up for a dance. Free entry and the music is varied, too – from funk to world music, reggae to flamenco, pop to rock. Swiftly moving on to Club 47 (C/ Quart, 47), this place offers you the most diverse music in the area with two floors, the bottom being mainly indie pop and a mix of classics and new school, upstairs pumping out electro and Marvin Gaye-style soul music. Very near Torres de Quart. Well, in the great words of Looney Tunes, “That's all, folks!” Just one thing...if you feel like you can't take no more...and your feet just can't touch the floor...what you gonna do?? We're gonna keep on dancing ...and grooving! Stay classy, Valencia.
