VALENCIA CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR
The “Todo a un Euro” shops have been stocking tinsel and blow-up Santas for months. Dean Martin is blasting out of the speakers at El Corte Ingles and it is 20 degrees outside. It must be Christmas time in Valencia, a time for peace on Earth, goodwill to all men, five-o’clock-on-aWednesday work ‘Christmas do’ Gin & Tonics, big TVs from Media Markt and remembering relatives (and local politicians) who’ve passed away and trying as much as possible to avoid the living ones. When football teams in Spain have a bad start to the season there is speculation whether the manager will get to “eat his Turrón” at the club or be sacked before New Year. For years, two towns in the community had the Christmas sweet market sewn up. Alicante made “el blando”; a soft dry almondy sweet moulded i nto a bar, Article © 2019/2020 24/7 Valencia
while from Xixona came “el duro”, a hard & dry almondy sweet moulded into a bar. The third option in this grand array of Christmas delights was polvorones, a powdery-dry almond sweet moulded into an oval shape. Polvorones are only eaten at one time of the year. The reason for this will become immediately obvious if you ever try one. When your entire Christmas hamper has long been finished off, that box of polvorones (and there always is one) will still remain. After centuries of dry almondy sweets, the Valencians finally realised that a bit of variety was needed. Not wishing to surrender sovereign tradition, the solution was to take what at any other time would simply be called “a bar of chocolate”, and rename it turrón just for the Christmas period. Genius!
Nowadays, bars of chocolate turrón easily outnumber the traditional stuff on any supermarket shelf. They come in any number of traditional Valencian flavours, such as kiwi fruit, Irish coffee and rum & raisin. These new innovations haven’t stopped at chocolate. Recently, Valencian sweet makers have gone all Willy Wonka on us. Amongst the innovations at the Casinos “Turrón and Christmas Sweets Trade Fair” include Gin & Tonic flavour Turrónes, Turrónes in the shape and colours of the Valencian and Rainbow flags, Whatsapp emoticon Turrónes and last but not least the gloriously Un-Christmassy Kebab Turrón, which you can cut as if it were a spit-roasted blob of donner meat. Lovely! Traditionally, every Spanish home

is decorated at this time of the year with a nativity scene complete with models of Mary, Joseph, the baby and perhaps some of the other characters from the Christmas story. Belén building is one Spanish construction industry that is definitely not in desperate decline. There’s a weird attraction towards building mini-worlds and this is a fun form of ecclesiastical Lego. Belenes are getting bigger and more spectacular by the year. What started off as adding a lump of moss-covered bark to add a bit of “atmosphere” has got completely out of hand. Just look around the Christmas markets (and of course Todo a un Euro) to see what bits of your Belen are a must this year. Now you can have an entire Little Town of Bethlehem on your dining room table complete with moving parts, villagers and their houses, a lake and a fully functioning Roman era saw mill. If it’s big you want, the Cathedral takes the lead with a Belén with lifesize models of the holy family, while the Basilica de San Vicente Ferrer has a Belén with over 300 figures, which is about the entire estimated
population of Bethlehem at the time. The dutifully sedate, traditional Belén, however, now has to fight for space with the bauble-strewn Northern European Christmas tree, the Mexican poinsettia plant, the holly branches and the plastic Father Christmas climbing up the balcony. In some cases, traditions have merged. Thus you get mutant crib scenes of cattle and shepherds nestling among tinsel, fairy lights and snow. On the other hand, the caganer (the figure of a man having a crap which, believe it or not, is traditional in Catalonian crib scenes) is now quite often found squatting behind the Christmas tree (at least I think that’s what it was I saw). In Spain, presents are brought by the Three Kings on January 6. You’d think that would be enough – but not for the festively-frenzied Valencians. In the last decade or so, Father Christmas has appeared on the scene. With his white beard and red suit he looks like the “traditional” Coca-Cola version, but for some reason he bears the French name ‘Papa Noel’. Far from having to fight it out with the Kings for his status in the hearts of Spanish children, he’s been
neatly incorporated into the whole tradition. Just like George Martin was the fifth Beatle, Father Christmas is a bit like the fourth King. It’s just that he comes a little bit earlier, conveyed by reindeer instead of camels. The big winners, of course, are the kids. Not only do they get loads of toys at Epiphany, they also get showered with goodies on Christmas day. The Three Kings themselves, Baltasar, Melchor and Gaspar (as they were named about 1000 years after they were supposed to have existed) arrive in Valencia by boat at the Marina Juan Carlos I and finish up at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the kings are raised up on a fireman’s ladder and enter the town hall through the balcony. And how are we going to pay for all this? There’s always the lottery. The buying of Christmas lottery tickets is an obligation here. No Spanish person can say no when offered a ticket or will take no for an answer when trying to sell you one. This is purely to avoid being that sad person who always appears on TV after the lottery draw; the only one in the block who didn’t buy a share in the winning ticket. They are usually filmed claiming fiercely “I’m happy because I am healthy”. So, this day is called too “el día de la salud”. Wherever you are during the festive season, make sure you enjoy it as enthusiastically as the Valencians do. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! VALENCIA WINES
VALENCIA WINES BY RIKI DO Utiel-Requena 12.5%ABV WIGLEY & MARIAN DARAS (Magnum). Nodus is the boDecember 2019/ January 2020 IN THIS ARTICLE WE LOOK AT SOME WINES, VERMUT AND CAVA WHICH WE HAVE TASTED RECENTLY AND RECOMMEND FOR XMAS CELEBRATIONS. Vermut ‘Secret Thing’ Bodegas Sebiran, DO Utiel-Requena 14.5%ABV. From the Campo Arcis bodega Sebiran. This is a new Vermut, another experiment turned ‘reality’ from Ken Wagener. Described as a ‘German Vermut’ in one newspaper, it uses white, rosado and red wines which are filtered to remove the colour as its base wine. 14 botanicals including mainly ajenjo (wormwood) and then natural wine sugars in the finish! A slightly lower alcohol makes a lighter and very pleasant aperitif. Enjoy!
dega situated on the road between Venta del Moro and Caudete de las Fuentes. A magnum is considered the ideal size for ageing wine. The grapes are grown in the bodega’s own vineyards, harvested and fermented in new French oak barrels. An open, clear, bright wine, straw coloured with splashes of gold. Elegant and complex on the nose, with tones of young wood, tropical fruit and vanilla. Harmonious in the mouth, well-structured and with a light acidity. Its finish recalls fruit and oaky notes. Perfect with smoked salmon! Viognier Tostado Lento, 2016, Vins del Comtat DO Alicante, 12.5%ABV. Winemaker David Carbonell is credited with introducing this variety to the Valencian vineyards. He is in our view the best producer of wines from Viognier. The wine takes its name from the short fermentation and crianza (about 2 months in total) in lightly toasted French Oak.
bright. It has a slightly sweet nose with toffee, white flowers, white stone fruit (apricot) and very fine notes of the oak with light balsamic notes. In the mouth it has notes of the wood on entry, very fine, delicate and full of flavour. Once again you note the work in barrel with the lees, which gives the wine some additional volume and complexity, it is aromatic, has a mature acidity and slight bitter notes which give it an exceptional freshness. This vintage may be hard to source now but the 2017and 2018 vintages are excellent! Las Fincas Blanco Dos Garnachas 2018, Bodegas Chivite Family Estates, Vino de la Tierra 3 Riberas, 14%ABV. Neither a Blanc de Noirs nor a Blanc de Blancs, this is a combination of Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Tinta, ©emlawrdesign (50% each) made by Chivite’s winemaker César Muñoz. The Garnacha Tinta is pressed quickly to avoid colour and brings red fruit, (redcurrant and pomegranate) to the nose whilst the Garnacha Blanca brings white flowers. This wine will need a little time in the glass to open up, it is a fact that in white wines made from red grapes the wine needs time for the elements to display fully. In the mouth the wine shows white fruit pulp, notably pears, and a hint of the oak from the crianza. There is also evidence in the depth of body of the work with the lees during this crianza. It is graceful, strong and elegant with a long satisfying finish.
Vermut Bitter Orange, Cent Piques, Bodegas Vinados, DO Valencia. A new Vermut from this bodega in Fontanares based on bitter orange. Again, a lighter style this is proving very popular amongst the bodega’s aficionados and we thoroughly Viognier is notoriously difficult recommend it as a pre-Xmas to make good wine with when oak is used. However, David meal aperitif! has converted this wine into Chardonnay, Fermentado en a fine art. Alicante 14.5%ABV. It is a pure Monastrell from old vines ‘envaso’ from around Salinas and its former salt lagoon. The wine is from slightly more mature grapes, fermented in stainless steel and then subject to crianza in French oak with the lees from the Chardonnay production. It is only put on the market 2 years after the vintage and only made in the best years. The result is a deep black cherry colour wine, brilliant, which on the nose shows tertiary notes of patisserie, creamy notes from the malolactic fermentation and red fruits, cherries in evolution as the wine opens up into a harmonious bouquet. In the mouth it is very elegant on entry, full of flavour, balanced acidity, well-integrated round tannins, and finishing with long creamy notes. A wine to keep for 5-10 years but can be enjoyed now.
Bobos Finca la Borracha 2017 Bobal, Bodegas Hispano Suizas, DO Utiel-Requena 13.5%ABV. Situated close to the hamlet of El Ponton, Hispano Suizas is a ‘bodega de referencia’ with all of its wines receiving very high scores in the various reviews and magazines and winning large numbers of prizes. This Bobal is from the vineyard immediately next to the Bodega, the former Finca La Borracha. It is from low producing 80-year-old vines. Whole berry fermentation in new oak barrels of 400litres. After the fermentation, the wine is moved to 300 litre Allier oak barrels for at least ten months. Intense red colour with long legs, the nose combines both red fruit and oaky notes, together with forest floor and balsamic notes from the wood. Very full on entry, quite ‘fat’ majestic, it aligns balanced elegant tannins
and mature fruit with light notes of the crianza, a long finish with a fresh acidity. Tantum Ergo 2017 Brut Nature Pinot Noir, Hispano Suizas DO Cava (Requena). 12%ABV. This Pinot Noir has been judged most consistently the best cava from Spain from the best bodega in Spain! (Penin, Parker, Verema, Sevi-net and the Association of Spanish wine writers all concur on this!) The grapes are pressed after 2 hours maceration fermented in open top new American oak barrels each year before the second fermentation in bottle and 15 months ‘en rima’. Pale salmon in colour with fine bubble, clean and very bright. On the nose powerful fruit aromas, red fruits, toasty notes, dried fruits, sweet spice such as vanilla. In the mouth full, spicy, rose-water and white stone, creamy notes, cherries and a nicely balanced acidity in a long finish.

LIVE MUSIC VENUE ‘Mar D’Amura’ told us more about the live music: “The Live flamenco and sometimes fusion is every Sunday at Mar d’Amura. It was born during the presentation of the record “Mediterraníes” by Albert Sanz. A post-gig jam session started with other musicians including Roqui Albero, Javi Forner, David Gadea and Vicent Macián. Some flamenco singers, including Vicente y Juan Torres (canto), Ramón Giménez (canto) and Johnny Bizárraga joined in. They are local lads from
Cabanyal, starting out in the world of flamenco. This special fusion of jazz and flamenco really took off that night and the results have been fantastic ever since. Keyboardist Albert Sanz & percussionist Sergio Martinez proposed that we make this a regular project and since then we have been privileged to enjoy the artistry of wonderful musicians like Perico Sambeat, Tomás de los Cariños, Juan de Pilar, Juan José Amador, Mateo Castro, Helena Feenstra, Alba Díaz, Ri-

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA THREE KINGS HOT CHOCOLATE
Originally, the Mayans and Aztecs took beans from the cacao tree. As well as using them as currency, they made a bitter drink mixed with spices called ‘xocoatl’ that they believed brought universal wisdom and knowledge. However, it took a while from the first ripples of cocoa reaching Spain in the 15th century for the value of cacao to be understood. The bitter, spicy brew was a bit of an acquired taste. It wasn’t until the divine addition of sugar and then mixing it with milk in the 16th century that the love of chocolate really was aroused. Indeed, the title of Laura Esquival’s book ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ is a Latin American expression that signifies a boiling over THREE KINGS HOT CHOCOLATE Serves 4 4 cups full fat milk 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tablespoons panela sugar 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder 1 cinnamon stick Grated zest of half orange 50g bittersweet chocolate Article © 2019/2020 24/7 Valencia
of uncontrollable passion. By the 17th century, it had become so popular it was necessary to ban its consumption in church during long services! Hence, at the end of these services, meetings known as ‘Las chocolatadas’ started to be held in celebration. Hot chocolate was now

considered as important in Spain as tea was to England and, like in Britain, coffee was largely ignored. Today, it is virtually a national symbol. Especially in Fallas, Easter and Christmas holidays you will find hot chocolate stalls on many streets, but particularly for the Day of the Kings on the 6th of January, the sweet bread, Roscón de Reyes must be accompanied by a good hot chocolate. I leave you with an Aztec inspired hot chocolate.
Here’s hoping it will bring you wisdom, knowledge, good cheer and a Happy New Year! Method Mix all the ingredients (except the tablet chocolate) with a whisk in a mediumsized saucepan. Heat gently, whisking the pan at the same time. When it is hot enough, add the chocolate and whisk until melted. Be careful to keep the mixture below boiling point. Serve into mugs. VALENCIA FOOTBALL
EUROPEAN FOOTBALL IN 2020 As the sunset fades on 2019, Valencia fans are assured of European football at the Mestalla at the beginning of 2020. What will be decided soon is whether they will continue into the knockout stages of the best club competition in the world that is the ‘Champions League’ …or drop down to the poor relation with the last 32 of the ‘Europa League’. Group H was always going to be a tough task. To finish in the top two when pitted against Chelsea, Ajax and Lille would be no mean feat. Lille have been disappointing but the other trio have lived up to expectations, drawing blood against each other. As the clubs enter the final set of games in December, Valencia and the teams from England and Holland all have a realistic chance of qualifying. Article © 2019/2020 24/7 Valencia
Valencia currently have a better head to head than the team from London but a less convincing one against Ajax. In turn, the Dutch side has a superior match up against Los Che, but an inferior one against Chelsea. This leads to numerous permutations. Realistically, Valencia need to win in Amsterdam to give them the greatest opportunity of progressing. With Chelsea at home to Lille, the form book suggests a victory for the “Pensioners”. The French team has lost both away games in the group to date and to expect them to secure a point at Stamford Bridge could well be wishful thinking. Things could have been far different, if not for the dropped points at the Mestalla against Chelsea and in Northern France. The match against the Londoners was a pulsating affair, played in an
electric atmosphere. The contest had almost everything and the 2-2 draw could have easily ended 6-6, as Frank Lampard suggested in his post-match interview. The away draw at Lille, when succumbing to an injury time equalizer, is much harder to stomach. It underlines Valencia’s inadequacy to kill off games in clinical fashion like the top, top clubs do. This failure also surfaced in the league with the recent away defeat to Betis being a prime example. Scoring first through Maxi Gómez, the lead was frittered away when the former Valencia star Joaquín equalized within five minutes. Conceding goals immediately after taking the initiative is another trademark flaw that fans have become accustomed to this season. To make matters worse, in the
35
third minute of injury time, another former Mestalla favourite Sergio Canales curled home a classic free kick to give all three points to the team from Seville. Injury time goals have cost the Valencia CF points this year since day one. In the very first game of the season, Real Sociedad equalized in the eleventh minute of injury time to deny Los Che a winning start. Then the recent game against Getafe should have also been put to bed but Valencia squandered a two goal lead from what looked like an unassailable position. Against Leganés and Osasuna, Valencia took leads in those matches only to come away with one point from six. Despite these irritations, Valencia are beginning to show a sign of what a formidable side they can become. Manager Albert Celades is finally beginning to stamp his identity on the club’s style of play. Before the year closes, Valencia fans have a mouth-watering contest with Real Madrid at the Mestalla in December to look forward to. Then, just eight days into the New Year, Los Che will play ‘Los Galácticos’ again…this time in Saudi Arabia in the Spanish Super Cup! Historically played on neutral territory between the League Champions and the winners of the Copa Del Rey, this year’s event will have a new format. Two extra teams (the second and third placed clubs in last year’s La Liga – Atlético and Real Madrid) have been added to create a competition that comprises of two semi-finals and a final. Valencia registered their displea-
sure about these changes and voiced a formal complaint but the trip to Jeddah will go ahead. The financial aspect of the trip is the biggest bone of contention, as both Real Madrid and Barcelona are anticipated to earn three times more for their participation than Los Che. Prize money is based on three considerations. Firstly, for participating the clubs will get close to one million Euros each, secondly for sporting awards (finishing first or second, etc.); there are additional financial rewards available. However, the biggest pot, and the one Valencia are so angry about is the third aspect of the money sharing, which is based on a club’s previous honours. Ludicrously, even if Valencia win the tournament, and both Real and Barcelona are knocked out in the semi-finals, the latter two clubs will still receive more money than Los Che! Over at Levante UD, the ‘Granotas’ continue to go about their business with a minimum of fuss. Paco López continues to do an excellent job and his efforts have been rewarded
with a new contract through to the summer of 2023. Arguably for Levante fans, their biggest game of the season is the home fixture with their more illustrious neighbours. A match up just before the Christmas break at the ‘Ciutat de Valencia’ went the way of the team in white but not before a major scare for the visiting supporters. In an action-packed match, Levante were two goals to the good inside twenty minutes after the home team’s striker Roger Marti had beaten Cillessen on his near post for the first. He then clinically dispatched a penalty for the second, after Parejo brought down Rochina as he weaved his way through the Valencia defence. The Torrente born striker then completed his hat-trick on the stroke of half-time. Unfortunately for Marti, who started his career with Valencia, it was this time in the Levante net. Parejo’s precise corner got a slight deflection in flight from another player to deviate onto Marti’s leg. His connection to the ball went goal bound and avoided the despairing hands of Article © 2019/2020 24/7 Valencia

Aitor Fernández… to give the visitors a lifeline. So, with the last kick of the first half, Valencia were back in the game. From that point on Los Che never looked back. Another defensive mistake early in the second half let in Rodrigo, who raced towards goal, before drawing out the keeper and dinking a cute little cross right onto the forehead of the incoming Kevin Gameiro. The Frenchman then teamed up with Ferran Torres to hit a ferocious shot past the Levante UD keeper to complete the come back. Just for good measure, Ferran himself added a fourth for the visitors with two minutes remaining. The victory gave Los Che their first win at Levante since 2011 to come away with maximum points. They are now firm contenders for the Champions League in terms of their position in La Liga. Finally, the Association of Valencia footballers will be offering something a little different for fans over the Christmas break. Football and opera will combine to create the first ‘Gala Benéfica de Campeones’ on December 28th at the Kinépolis in Heron City. VALENCIA STREET ART ‘BARBITURIKILLS’ (EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW) 24/7 Valencia: Tell us about the philosophy and objectives of your art. BARBITURIKILLS: The philosophy of my art can be summed up as revolution, humour and love. My work has a cheerful and fun character. The characters I paint are acidic, kind, loving and adorable.
It is no coincidence that I have used this cute animal because of its sexual connotations, its reputation for causing plagues, its iconography in visual culture like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Playboy... There’s also a story from my childhood. I was a city girl and went to a village on vacation and my great-aunt “bought me” a rabbit. I understood that he was my new friend and I played with him all afternoon. The next morning the bunny was skinned in the kitchen, it was for paella. A downturn…
I want visual art for all audiences even if they tell adult stories under the surface. I like my walls to make the spectator laugh, an intelligent laugh of sorts. When I paint in the street, I also hope that they like to see an improvement of what was there… Tell us more about your current projects. one of them makes me especially excited, and I don’t mind talking about it. I’m going to paint a fairly large mural with a companion in the new Urban Garden that is going to be done in my local neighbourhood. I really like to collaborate with these kinds of initiatives, especially if they come from my immediate environment. We all make the city. Another thing I’m going to do shortly is to present a deck of Tarot cards that I drew, designed and self-published. It’s very cool, you’ll see soon... MY RUZAFA ##Ruzafa or Russafa (Valenciano) means something similar to “scented garden” in Arabic. The Valencian barrio is known for being an upbeat and progressive area and home to many artists, local families and immigrants. Located on the southern side of the city, historically, it used to be seen as somewhat apart from the centre of action in Valencia. Now it is a vibrant neighbourhood with colourful buildings and hip restaurants. When I first came to Valencia, I was given my living arrangements and found out I’d be in Ruzafa and now I would not want to be anywhere else. Whether it’s 8am or 9pm, you can always find something going on. CAFÉS: Living in Ruzafa, I passed by the same café every day, ‘Dulce de Leche Boutique’, and it always looked bustling with people and I could see the delicious food on their plates through the window, so I decided to check it out. Upon first arrival I thought. “Wow, there is a line!” Granted, it was noon... so solid brunch hour but most other places I passed by didn’t have the same status. There are glass shelves with all of the pastries and sandwiches you could ever imagine. Once at the front of the line I decided to order a breakfast sandwich, chocolate cake and an iced latte which came out to 11 euros. I was able to find a table even though it was packed. The inside of the store has a beautiful modern and rustic vibe and urban music playing. When my food came it was on a wooden tray, which added to the rustic vibe and was aesthetically pleasing. The iced latte came with a paper straw which, as a lover of environmental conservation, made me happy. Not to mention the food was amazing. avocado which reminded me of home in the US. The cake to die for and the iced coffee was the cherry on top. Definitely a must-visit! DULCE DE LECHE BOUTIQUE RUZAFA Calle de Cuba, 46 Ruzafa zone Tel: 960 03 59 49 Hours: Everyday 9am- 9pm ‘Ubik Café’ is regarded by many to be one of the most emblematic bars in Ruzafa. As Rachel McClamroch of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team adds: “UBIK Cafe is a place that wears many hats, each as pleasing as the other. In the hip Ruzafa barrio, customers can come sit at the worn, mismatched wooden tables under book-lined walls and find a bar, a restaurant, a cafe, a bookshop, an event venue, or just all-in-all a cosy meeting place. The cafe hosts language exchanges, wine and beer tastings, live music every week, a reading club once a month and workshops on subjects as varied as sushi or notebook-making.”

The 24/7 Valencia team noted: “The most popular
section of the menu is the finger food choice of tapas ‘para picar’, which is incredibly good value at just 1.50€ each. We opted for what turned out to be a wonderful ‘Sujuk’, which combined a smooth pastry with a spicy, filling meat with manchego cheese, tomato with a touch of garlic…all in a masa fina. Indeed, this tapas is so successful it can be found in the Middle East, the Balkans and even Asia…” KAÑA MAKAN BISTROT C/ Sueca, 61 (Ruzafa) Tel: 96 015 07 96 www.kanamakan.com facebook: KanaMakan
Another favourite is ‘Oli Bar’ in the park. They tell us that “Oli Bar is a meeting place, located in the only green corner of Ruzafa, Manuel Granero Park. In our bar - charcuterie, with affordable prices for any wallet or purse, we offer Spanish ham or hand-cut ham, Iberian cold meats, Manchego cheeses, a variety of seasoned olives, wines and more. The menu also includes the always spectacular ‘Bresaola’, smoked & melted Scamorza cheese, homemade tortillas and an authentic Tex-Mex dish, ‘Cochinita Pibil’! All this in a fresh and carefree atmosphere and with the best jazz background music, played on an original Toshiba cassette radio. THE HOLIDAY SOUNDS OF JOSH ROUSE so I would write some music to get in the Christmas spirit.”
THE HOLIDAY SOUNDS OF JOSH ROUSE Josh Rouse’s latest and 13th album is called ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’, which he presented at ‘Loco Club’ in Valencia very recently. Josh lived with his Spanish family in Valencia for many years but they are now based in Nashville. With an international fan base, this concept album is new territory for the American former expat. The idea of doing a holiday collection of songs was first suggested on tour, back in 2015, by legendary musician & friend Nick Lowe. Themes include Xmas in this part of Spain and childhood memories of Christmas holidays spent in the USA too. Josh adds: “It’s something I’ve been chipping at… without realizing it.” A father of two young children with Valencian artist Paz Suay, Josh Rouse adds: “I decided that if I was going to make a Article © 2019/2020 24/7 Valencia
holiday record, I didn’t want to load it up with sleigh bells and choirs and sing the same old standards that everybody else has already sung. I approached writing these songs like I was soundtracking a film. I was trying to bring all these little holiday scenes around the world to life with humour. For the past 10 years, I’ve been in Spain for Christmas. There was no snow or no real cold weather,
24/7 Valencia: Can you tell us what made you move back to the U.S.A. after having lived in Valencia for so many years? Josh Rouse: Nashville is the music capital of the world in my eyes. Although I was born in Nebraska, I consider it my home in the US as I lived there for a long time. They have melody in the tap water! 24/7 Valencia: How do you find life out there compared to living in Spain? Josh Rouse: Well, there’s more space for sure, it’s more expensive, more green, more lively I would say. It’s really hard to compare. The locals are quite different. 24/7 VALENCIA REVIEW OF ‘THE HOLIDAY SOUNDS OF JOSH ROUSE’ Light-hearted and languid with festive marimba sounds, ‘Mediterranean X-mas’ has a video shot in the Valencia re-

gion. In memorable juxtaposition, Josh wears a black suit in sunny weather by a swimming pool with his kids… and a Santa hat on his head whilst strumming a Spanish guitar: “Sun is shining and we’re wearing flip-flops!” ‘Red Suit’ has a nasal ‘Nashville Skyline’ feel. It’s a steadygroove about Father Christmas using GPS to visit your local neighbourhood when everybody is asleep at Christmas. In spirit, this one is family-man Dylan with a touch of Raymond Briggs! ‘New York Holiday’ is a wonderful track with memorable double bass, smoky piano fills and a jazzy feel that brings to mind Dean Martin in his heyday. A former resident of Brooklyn, Josh captures the essence of the great city as he refers sympathetically to memories of times spent in various barrios of ‘The Big Apple’. ‘Easy Man’ is a laid back number about being content to be back in time for Christmas with his family and hanging out with “the in-laws…they’re really not so bad.” ‘Sleigh Brother Bill’ has an upbeat, lolloping rhythm that carries the song up and down the joyous yet perilous snowy hill from Josh’s childhood. “Small pine trees can cause a crash!” ‘Lights of Town’ has a seductive Nina Simone-esque piano theme with Josh taking his
bride out to see the bright lights on New Year’s Eve. They’re happily determined to paint the town red…drinking Bourbon & Coca Cola, hearts a-skipping, dizzy & looking for fun with bloodshot eyes: “You wanna go where the action is… and steal the night!” ‘Letters in the Mailbox’ is more melancholy with Rouse mooching in galoshes through the cold & snow of North America. The months pass and it’s Christmas and he is silently suffering the snailmail correspondence from the partner he so misses: “How’s the weather in Spain? I get so lonely this time of the year.” ‘Heartbreak Holiday’ is a breakup song with a sunny melody. There’s a dark underbelly to this track with Josh feeling thwarted, outgunned & deserted by a canny ex-girlfriend: “Taking back my presents and wondering if you are too?”
‘Christmas Songs’ is a slinky & optimistic way to tie the album up, which pays homage to the immortal Nat King Cole too. Josh is alone on a “heated, hardwood floor” and stuck in Sweden at Christmas but loving the songs and festive spirit of Gothenburg. He meets a “Big Ole’ Blue Eyes Swedish Girl… Hark the Herald Angels sing!” 24/7 Valencia Xmas team
