EL MIGUELETE

THE CATHEDRAL TOWER OF VALENCIA ‘EL MIGUELETE’ “It houses the oldest and largest musical instrument in the Comunidad Valenciana. Juana la Loca, the Borgias and Blasco Ibáñez have climbed its steps. The inventor Juan de la Cierva flew his Autogiro (a sort of prototype helicopter) off its terrace in 1924. Zeppelins flew over it and later bomber aircraft threw their dark shadow over it in the 1930s. The Great Bordini rode down it on a motorbike in the 1970s!” Forget the City of Arts and Sciences, the Torre de Francia, and the Modernist temples of the Estación del Norte and the Central Market. Don’t even think about the Parotet and the Palau de Música. The Torres de Serranos runs it close but if any one building has become a symbol of Valencia it’s the cathedral bell tower, known to us all as ‘El Miguelete’. It has stood watching over the city for nearly 600 Article © 2020 24/7 Valencia

years, its bells ringing out warnings of pirates, French invasions and air raids. It has overseen the fall and rise of new republics and civil wars and has taken on a popular identity all of its own, separate from the cathedral itself. Construction started in 1381, and the tower was completed in 1429. It was built in a style dictated by the Templar Knights, who had a thing for mathematical symmetry. So, it is perfectly octagonal in shape and its perimeter is exactly the same as its height from the base to its original terrace (51 metres). Various bits and bobs were added and taken away over the centuries and it now stands at 71 metres… to the tip of the cross at the top of the belfry. The Templars also left their mark on other weird and wonderful features of the tower. The dark prison, in the tower’s second section, is a stone

room with five-metre thick walls. This is where those who entered the cathedral asking for “sanctuary” from the forces of law and order were kept. An unusually designed window, which is not in line with the rest of the tower, only allows sunlight into the room for just two minutes on exactly the morning of 15 August, the Catholic feast of the Assumption to which the cathedral was originally dedicated. Another strange feature is the Piedra Sillar or foundation stone, which is at the base of the tower in C/ del Miguelete and juts out a little from the others. If you give it a sharp knock, you can hear the sound clearly up in the bell room. To this day nobody knows exactly how it works; some sort of cavity must have been incorporated into the building but there is nothing in the original plans. It was used to let the

bell ringers know when to start work. There is historic graffiti both in the prison and the bell room, where people who lived or worked their left their mark. In between the two is the bell ringer’s quarters. The last man to occupy them was one Marlano Folch, who lived there and took charge of the bell tower for 60 years until he died in 1905. His name is scratched onto the stone walls within which he spent a whole lifetime. It costs 2€ to go up (or 8€ if you want a tour of the whole cathedral in one of eight languages; 5.50€ for children, students, pensioners and disabled). Once you’ve negotiated the rather tiresome traffic light system which allows people to come up or down without having to pass on the narrow spiral staircase, there are 207 steps that are quite steep as some of them are 25 cms high. So, it can be heavy going. It’s worth it when you get to the top. Valencia is relatively flat and you can see the whole city. All the way from its western reaches and the mountains to the sea in the east and the huerta in the north and south, against an unusually bright blue sky. Immediately below are the clay tile rooftops and terraces

The Miguelete tower itself has played an active role in Valencia’s history. In the 16th century, it served as a beacon with a permanent guard watching the coast. Bonfires were lit at the top of the tower to warn of attacks as part of a string of beacons that went all the way up to the Ebro. The same system during the War of Succession and the Napoleonic invasion in the 19th century and the tower was hit by a grenade of the chaotic, rambling Barrio del during the Carlist wars in 1868. During Carmen and the Torres de Quart and the Civil War in the 1930s, it was used Serranos, which give you some idea of as a watchtower with sirens and loudthe limits of the ancient city. speakers to warn of air raids coming over from Mallorca. If you look up you see the huge Miquel bell, which rings out every hour and ‘El Miguelete’ runs right through the gives the tower its name. VALENCIA BOOKS ALAN THOMPSON (writing as JEREMY DEAN) 24/7 Valencia: Can you tell us what your book is about? Alan Thompson: Cucarachas or Cucuruchos: An English Teacher’s Spanish Dilemma is my second book describing the experiences of a (fictional) British teacher working in the Valencian community. It’s a humorous ‘year-in-the-life’ story of Jeremy’s mishaps, all very loosely (or sometimes, not so loosely) based on my own experiences. I came to Spain in 2006 to work in an ‘immersion’ school - where children are taught in a language which isn’t their native tongue. So, the vast majority of the children are Spanish while pretty much all their teachers are native English speakers. Not surprisingly, the six- and seven-year-olds in my class often struggle to communicate with me in English. Imagine Basil Fawlty in command of 25 very small Manuels (and Manuelas): usually I can’t understand them or they don’t understand me. I told one girl she could take her painting home tonight. ‘Tonight ees today?’ she asked in reply. Another described playing ‘highdung-sick’ with her friends: it took a 10-minute charades session before I realised she meant ‘hide-and-seek’. Outside school, I get an insight into what the children might be experiencing as I attempt to survive with minimal Spanish and little idea of how things work. Yes, I did expect to go for a relaxing café con leche the first time I took my car for an MOT test. A rapid-fire oral examination of Article © 2020 24/7 Valencia

auto-parts in Spanish, conducted by an angry man carrying a clipboard caught me horribly underprepared. It didn’t take me long to realise that my new lifestyle was ideal raw material for a book, especially as nearly every staffroom conversation revealed more amusing anecdotes, accompanied by countless ‘someone should write a book about this’ comments. I pitched a few articles at the Times Educational Supplement who suggested I use a pseudonym and christened me Jeremy Dean. The articles spawned my first book (Zen Kyu Maestro, Monday Books, 2013). Cucarachas or Cucuruchos: An English Teacher’s Spanish Dilemma is the sequel. It documents many of the linguistic and social minefields which ‘foreigners’ face when working abroad. How was I to know that you mustn’t say ‘Austria’ to young Spaniards? Apparently, it sounds remarkably like ‘Hostia’ - a Spanish swear word. And what do you do when a boy yells, ‘You’re a foca!’ while playing an animal-identification game? ‘Foca’, I know now (but didn’t know then), is Spanish for ‘seal’. At least I’ve learned some valuable life skills: like knowing what to do when a child introduces you to his kangaroo; or another writes that the money used in the UK is ‘pounds and penis…’ What are your plans for the future? I hope to develop my writing further. I already contribute a col-

umn to Vila-real’s monthly magazine (Poble). This is aimed at locals who want to practise their English - although I fear my only readers are probably ex-pupils of mine. I also have a novel brewing on my laptop. But Jeremy Dean’s voice keeps whispering in my ear and the third volume of his adventures seems to write itself every time I step into the classroom or out onto the streets. So I’m listening out for more linguistic gaffes, like the girl who told me she was planning to ‘peel’ her dog. My rapidly-improving Spanish skills confirmed that the phrase she wanted was ‘cut its hair.’ Never a dull moment! Cucarachas or Cucuruchos: An English Teacher’s Spanish Dilemma is available (eBook or paperback) on Amazon. Its predecessor, Zen Kyu Maestro: An English Teacher’s Spanish Adventure, can also be found there (but only as an eBook). Alan Thompson Interview by 24/7 Valencia

VALENCIA WINES VALENCIA WINES BY RIKI flowers (almond), hint of custard Bodegas Coviñas DO Cava WIGLEY & MARIAN DARAS and apple, herbs (fennel). In the (Requena) 12% ABV In this month of February, we recommend eight wines together with a restaurant for Saint Valentine’s Day. The wines are from two Valencian bodegas, one in Requena and the other with its base in Fontanares. We have included a supermarket wine from Tierra de Castilla because it represents good value and quality. The wines from Coviñas are available from some supermarkets and those from Cent Piques from some smaller specialist shops in Ruzafa. Cent Piques Vermut Blanco, Bodegas Vinados, DO Valencia 15% ABV The first wine this month is an artisan Vermut from Cent Piques. Made with a base wine, herbs and with floral, citric and root botanicals and all from the Valencia region. Lightly sweet, citrus notes, cinnamon, silky easy entry and a pleasant, long finish. A very easy to drink Vermut. Cent Piques Verdejo Eco 2019 Bodegas Vinados, Fontanars, 11.5%ABV The new vintage wines are starting to emerge! This ‘Verdejo’ is an ecological wine and contains minimum sulphites. It is a fresh wine for drinking within the year. Salvador, the winemaker has reduced the use of stalks in the pressing to 3% from the previous vintage. As a result, the wine is easier to drink. Pale gold with deeper gold flashes, clean and bright. mouth very fresh and intense on entry with a big acidity, green apple fruit, well-structured, good body with a mineral note and slight bitterness in a dry, long finish. Juntos Moscatel Gran Menudo 2018, Bodegas Volver IGP Tierra de Castilla 11.5% ABV Guest wine from Cuenca from a bodega with major interests in DO Alicante. From the lesser known small berry Moscatel… this is a very good example of a bodega producing a supermarket wine, which is good quality and cheap. Pale yellow, clean and bright. The nose is intensely fragrant with rose, rose petal, rose water and Turkish delight, orange blossom and white flowers. In the mouth fresh, clean and with a good structure and balance. Sufficient body, fresh acidity and just enough of a sweet note (alcohol) are perfectly matched in this wine. (Available from Aldi) Great aperitif wine! Al Vent Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Bodegas Coviñas DO UtielRequena 11.5% ABV One of our favourite Sauvignon Blanc wines grown in the Valencian Community. Normally very Northern French in its style. Straw-coloured, with a glint of emerald and a natural limpid brilliance. A touch of fennel and orange peel on the nose, with sultry hints of tropical fruit. A perfect blend of fresh acidity and elegant fruit in the mouth, well-structured and balanced. Long finish with fruit. Aula Cava Reserva Brut Nature,

A blend of Macabeo and Chardonnay. Each variety is vinified separately. Fermentation in stainless steel. Once blended for the second fermentation, it then spends 46 months ‘en rima’. Clean and bright pale-yellow colour with gold reflections and fine, persistent bubbles. The aroma has pears, fennel and patisserie with a lovely hazelnut note. Balanced, persistent with elegant acidity. Winner of Gold medals in the World Competition in Brussels. DAVID BECKHAM

DAVID BECKHAM EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW It’s a long way from Leytonstone, mate. David Beckham arrived in Spain in the summer of 2003. Joining Real Madrid, the self-proclaimed ‘best team in the world’ he arrived with great expectations. Playing alongside galácticos like Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo and Raul he was hoping to learn a useful language, get a bit of a suntan and add extensively to his trophy collection. Two years on, he learnt to tell journalists “to go **** yourselves” in purest Castellano and was hinting at leaving the country because the paparazzi wouldn’t leave his family alone: ‘’They’re crossing the line.’’ The more jaded hacks pointed to the fact that he had won nothing of note since he had arrived at Madrid. The team of

ageing stars no longer shined anymore and a major overhaul of players was being offered as a solution. What better time to leave an ailing giant before he gets asked to by the president? The ‘24/7 Valencia’ interview with Beckham took place after the Valencia v Real Madrid match in March 2005. During the match, the less charitable sections of the crowd chanted all sorts of insults about Becks and his partner. Despite the abuse, he got on with his job. Like the rest of the Real Madrid team, he looked tired and they were lucky to get a draw against a re-energised Valencia team. Suffice to say, Beckham was substituted in the 77th minute for midfielder Albert Celades!

Post-match, the ‘24/7 Valencia’ reporter found Beckham to be very amenable and happy to spend some time with the English Speaking journalists from the Daily Mail, Guardian, The Sun and 24/7 Valencia. For somebody so much in the spotlight, he was refreshingly downto-earth and normal in his demeanour. Spending a quarter of an hour with him face-to-face, you sensed that he was quietly taking his universal fame in his stride. Regarding the Premier League, Becks chatted about the ‘’incredible Van Nistelrooy being back at Man Utd was a massive boost for the team”. Regarding the Liga and his toll of yellow cards, there was the obligatory: ‘’Obviously, I’m going to be disappointed to be missing the Getafe game”. Yeah, right.

At one point, his green eyes swivelled in the direction of our ‘24/7 Valencia’ reporter... who had once worked as a kitchen porter where Victoria and Beckham happened to have had their first ever date on the outskirts of London at ‘The Castle’ in Woodford Green. Although born in the East End, Becks had grown up in neighbouring Chingford… 24/7 Valencia: David...One question about food. Which do you prefer? Fish ‘n’ chips or paella? FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA CHIMICHURRI AND CARROT TOPS

If you get an organic veg box, you will find your vegetables don’t come neatly trimmed to fit their plastic container but bustling with a jungle of accompanying vegetation. Waste not, want not! Don’t throw it in the bin. These leaves and tops are the top of the pops… with nutrients of around six times more than the root as well as lots of potassium, calcium and phytonutrients. With beetroot, I use the smaller leaves in salads and then roast the stalks with olive oil and a little salt. I soak in balsamic dressing and then keep for use in salads. With carrots, the green herb part is slightly bitter and is a digestive aid. It is perfect for making this carrot leaf version of Chimichurri. You can make this in larger quantity to keep in the fridge for use as an everyday accompaniment. In this recipe, we combine it with freshly pan-fried carrots and homemade paneer. with the garlic. Next add the olive oil, chilli flakes, cumin, lemon juice and salt. Pulse for a few seconds to mix. Homemade paneer (prepare at least 2 hours or the night before) (Or use Haloumi or goat’s cheese as an alternative) You will need a muslin cloth to drain 1.5 litres full fat milk Juice of 1 lemon Salt Gently bring the milk to boiling point on a stove. When it has cooled a bit, add the lemon juice and stir with a whisk. Immediately, the milk will separate. Add a little salt. Strain the liquid into a bowl using a fine muslin cloth. You can wash the cheese a bit with water to have less of the lemon flavour. Squeeze the cloth so that you get rid of as much

liquid as possible. Place in a fridge to chill with a large weight over the top and a bowl underneath, to catch any residing liquid. Pan-fried carrots 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons honey 25g butter 1 bunch of carrots (about 8) scrubbed and chopped into chunky rounds Heat a heavy based frying pan. Add the olive oil and butter. Add the carrots and cook for about 10 minutes but be careful not to lose the crunch. Stir in the honey. Next, take your paneer cheese and crumble into similar chunks. Again, heat some olive oil in the frying pan with some sea salt. Add the cheese and fry until nicely browned on the sides.

Mix the paneer with the carrots and top with your chimchurri salsa, garnishing with a few extra leaves from the tops. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

WILL VALENCIA BE IN EUROPE NEXT SEASON? As the sun sets and Britain finally leaves the European Union, Valencia fans are asking themselves will the club remain in Europe next season. Currently they are targeting that mission on three separate fronts, the Champions League, the Copa Del Rey and La Liga itself. The most unlikely is automatic entry into the Champions League next time by winning the trophy outright this year. After finishing top of a tough group that included both Chelsea and Ajax, the draw for the first round of the knock out stages and the last sixteen pitted Los Che against Atalanta of Italy.

Valencia ranks from the starting line-up that day, (Gayá, Parejo, Soler and Rodrigo) whilst a fifth, Jaume Doménech, replaced Neto during the game. The Italians won that match by the odd goal in three. They have been on fire in front of goal since the start of the year, having planted five goals past Parma in Bergamo, and an amazing seven goals past Simone Zaza’s Torino in Turin a few weeks ago. The club, that were formed by Swiss students in 1907, have a multi-national look to them. Their main threats being Brazilian Rafael Toloi, (who scored in the 2017 Trofeo Naranja) Slovenian Josip Iličić, the German born midfielder Robin Gosens, Dutch centre half Marten de Roon, and the very talented Croatian Mario Pašalić, who is on loan from Chelsea.

gracing the Mestalla early in March. Another way Valencia can guarantee European football next year is by retaining the Copa Del Rey. This year’s victors will get automatic entry into the Europa League group stage. This little nugget will prove just as enticing for many clubs as the Spanish Super Cup. That debacle took place in Saudi Arabia just after Three Kings. Ironically, the League champions Barcelona and the Cup Winners Valencia got knocked out in the semi-finals by Atlético and Real Madrid respectively, meaning neither winners of silverware in 2019 were in the Super Cup final. As a direct consequence of that, the 2020 Copa Del Rey structure has a new complicated format. This means that the four competitors that competed in this year’s Super Cup get a bye right up to the round

This quest will be buyed by the capture of the Italian international Alessandro Florenzi, who has been signed on loan until the end of the season from Roma. As a side note in the transfer window, Valencia decided not to take up the option to buy the promising Elche midfielder Gonzalo Villar. Los Che had first dibs on any pending transfer but declined the opportunity. This allowed the Murcia born star to head to Roma for a fee that is reportedly worth 4 million Euros, plus potential add ons.

Meanwhile, things are not so good at Levante UD. A dip in form has led to Los Granotas slipping steadily down the table and closer and closer to the relegation zone. Having lost their last five league games (the latest to Barcelona) one would have thought the manager Paco Lopéz may have been tempted to dabble in the January transfer window. His purchases have been limited to date with the only new player being Bruno González who swapped clubs with Erick Cabaco (Getafe). Goalkeeper Oier Olazábal has moved on to Espanyol, adding over one million Euros to the Levante coffers and winger Ivi López has agreed a loan move to SD Ponferradina. Any further transactions before the midnight deadline on February 3rd seem unlikely. Having kept faith with his current squad he will be hoping to bag a few additional points against the likes of Leganés, Eibar and Villarreal, who are all opponents in the next month or so. VALENCIA FILM & DOCUMENTARIES EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH VALENCIA DIRECTOR ANA RAMÓN RUBIO 24/7 Valencia: Tell us about something about your upbringing and education... Ana Ramón Rubio: I studied in an American school so I always felt very identified & attracted to American culture. We had talent-shows, we did trick-or-treating in Halloween, we celebrated ‘Thanksgiving’ and did all those other things that we usually see in the movies and may seem distant to most Spanish students. So, I think that’s one of the reasons why I always had a special interest in Americana and even more so on ‘Route 66’ because I had read about it in books, or seen it in movies or heard about it from songs... What got you interested in film and documentaries? Even though my parents have nothing to do with the business side of entertainment, they always took my brother and I to the movies and to music concerts or to the theatre. They wanted us to be interested in

arts, books, films... and I think that is where everything started. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a writer, I wanted to write novels but then I started falling in love with movies and Television series. I was always interested in where the camera was placed and in the narrative of the stories. So I started shooting very bad short films that I never finished, with a handycam, until I decided to study audiovisual communication in college. Tell us the story of ‘Almost Ghosts.’ Almost Ghosts is a documentary film about (almost) ghost towns of Route 66 and the American survivors who live there. I once drove the first stretch, from Chicago to Saint Louis, on a road trip to New Orleans. I got the impression that the Mother Road was very different from what we always saw in TV shows, especially because of the depopulation and the abandonment of some of the towns, mainly the smaller ones.

When Eisenhower started building interstates and quicker highways, there were thousands of towns that had always made their living from the traffic of Route 66 that died and a lot of people started fighting to halt its decline. Route 66 was something that had always been so iconic and it was suddenly so human for me. Since then it started to awaken my interest as a documentary subject, because of the intimate stories all along it. In fact it is a film about people, not so much a film about Route 66. Angel Delgadillo, Harley Russell and Lowell Davis are the main characters of the film and all of the story is told with their voice, with their experiences and with their day-to-day existence. How did you find living and working on Route 66? Shooting on Route 66 was an adventure. There are roads that are suddenly cut short and one day it is hot as hell and the next day it is snowing in Missouri. The drive is 4.000 kilometres through States that are so different from each other like California, Texas or Arizona.

‘ALMOST GHOSTS’ thentic and that enjoy living outside the bigger cities and the big technological changes. There is a really great community all along the 4.000 kilometres of Route 66. Each state has their own Association and they all work together to preserve the road. The inhabitants of towns of Oklahoma know the ones from Texas and vice versa, they try to be a community, and in the towns, people look out for each other, everybody knows everybody... I think it’s mostly people that enjoy living a slow life.

For travellers, it really is an amazing experience. It is an initiation trip in search of American culture, the American way, the USA from East to West. But for those who live there, things have been really tough during the 80s & 90s.There is some economic rebound thanks to tourism, but there is still lots of commerce that is closing down every year and lots of historic buildings that are completely abandoned... What was your impression of the people who have chosen to still live there? Our main characters have very different lives. Harley Russell, for example, receives thousands of visitors every season. He has a very irreverent music show in his place in Erick (Oklahoma) and at the same time you can find Lowell Davis just enjoying his pipe in the porch of his house in Red Oak II (Missouri) or Angel Delgadillo who has become a local hero in Arizona for his work to make Route 66 historic.

Could you tell us something about your other work? I started in the web series industry when it wasn’t even an industry, because I wanted to feel the taste of telling stories and really didn’t have the budget to do it. We did a crowdfunding and shot ‘Sin Vida Propia’, which travelled to a lot of web series festivals in the US. Then I wrote and directed ‘We all wanted to kill the president’, a comic thriller that was released on Amazon Prime Video, short films, the Valencian TV series ‘La Vall’, which was the first narrative series of the new Valencian public television (À Punt Media) with Valencian filmmaker Pau Martínez. And now I’m developing the script of a documentary, which is very related to Valencian and the British culture and that hopefully will be filmed this year. What were the challenges that you faced when making ‘Almost Ghosts’?

The sheer distance was a real challenge. It’s not so easy to organize a shooting in towns and cities where you have never been before and when you are 10.000 kilometres away. Then the funding was also a But the Route 66 community is challenge, and the language, and the mostly people that want to be au- fact of driving across the US with a Article © 2020 24/7 Valencia

very tight schedule to arrive on time for the interviews, the locations, etc. And once it was finished, the challenge of distributing it, because documentary films are in a very good place right now but the public still isn’t so used to go to the theatre to watch them. It has been one challenge after another but that makes the process a lot more fun! Does Valencia have a bright future in the audiovisual world? There’s a lot of talent in Valencia with people that tell great stories, not only in film but also in the documentary genre. The main issue, as happens everywhere, is the funding. However, in recent years you can feel the positive work that has been done via public administration. That’s why we are starting to create an industry that in the future could have an identity such as what has already happened with Catalan or Basque cinema. We are not there yet, but there’s work being done and there is this atmosphere of creativity and optimism that is helping to improve the situation. In recent years, there have been some films made in Valencia that are amazing. “La Estrategia del Silencio”, for example, is one of the best documentary films ever made in Spain and was set and produced here in Valencia. In 2019 there was the debut film, “La Inocencia” that was shot in the Castellon region and the short film ‘9 Pasos’ is one of the most awarded short films in the world. There is a real effort being made here combined with local talent and what we have to do is to keep working in the same direction to really create a proper audiovisual industry in Valencia. XIMO TEBAR’S A-FREE-KAN JAZZ DANCE BIG BAND

XIMO TEBAR’S A-FREE-KAN JAZZ DANCE BIG BAND 24/7 Valencia: What is the concept of A-Free-Kan Jazz Dance Big Band? Ximo Tebar: The name itself is an indication. It is a musical jazz project that includes the African tradition of dance and percussion. Explain to us the roots of Jazz with the music of Africa... Jazz is pure rhythm…and the rhythm of jazz comes from Africa. Please tell us something about each song on the album ‘Ximo Tébar A-Free-Kan Jazz Dance Big Band. I can summarize something of each theme, but if you are interested in knowing more about the themes and the arrangements I invite you to read the extended notes that the doctor in musical research José Pruñonosa has written in the booklet of the album. On the website www.afreekanjazz. Article © 2020 24/7 Valencia

com there is more information and you can even listen to the album. The opening track on the album is Peter Gunn, a composition by Henry Mancini that has been covered by many artists. The most popular versions are from the film ‘The Blues Brothers’ and group ‘Emerson, Lake & Palmer’. In my version, I have made a nod to that version by ELP. Its development is based on continuous reharmonizations, since it is originally a modal theme. Caravan Nazari is a re-composition of an arrangement I wrote from Duke Ellington’s Caravan. It has finally progressedevolved into a new melody with a Nazarene character while respecting Ellington’s original structure. Velours is a theme by musicians who bring fresh sounds and

apply newer rhythms to the song. The main soloist is Will Martz on the keyboards, who also acts as co-arranger. George Gershwin’s Summertime is the fourth track on the album and is sung by vocalist and percussionist Vinx, a regular collaborator of Sting, Herbie Hancock or Stevie Wonder. Con Alma is a composition by the great Dizzy Gillespie and the arrangement is based on a rhythmic amalgamation that I have labelled as pseudobulería, because it mixes the flamenco bulería pattern with other rhythmic patterns. In my opinion, the result offers a fluid listening both melodically and rhythmically. I always try to generate interactive music, and above all, something “understandable”, even though theoretically or technically it may be a virtuoso interpretation and in some way difficult to perform. I think this performance is a good example. Always and Forever is a com-

position by Pat Metheny that I have tried to take to more bluesy terrain. In Wayne Shorter’s Footprints I have simplified the rhythmic of the melody to give it a more ambient and enveloping character, focused on voice and dance. And the very popular Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba is the closing track of the album in a festive and participatory tone sung by vocalist Kuami Mensah of Benin in Africa. On the other hand, the album comes with a DVD that includes live versions of some songs, and additional content such as the scores of the big band arrangements. What are your plans for A-FreeKan Jazz Dance Big Band for 2020/2021? I would like very much to be able to tour with this great music and dance project. I also am fortunate to have the support of the musicians and dancers who are excited and enthusiastic

about the show. I know that it is a difficult project to move because of the number of people who are part of it, more than thirty, between artists and technical team. However, I will try to make this work, given the effort that has been made by all to bring this project to life. Explain the ‘Son Mediterráneo’ to us… ‘Son Mediterráneo’ is the title of a track I composed in 1990 and which also served as the title to my fifth album. That album had a lot of national and international success and from that moment on they began to catalogue my music with the label ‘Son Mediterráneo’. The truth is that I feel identified with the label, because the jazz that I make has that happy, colourful and luminous air that characterises our Mediterranean culture. How do you see Valencia as a city of music? Music in Valencia forms part of our identity, culture and tradition… but the reality is that the importance it has here does not correspond to the

institutional treatment given to it… when it comes to prestige, educating, updating, training, innovating, and valuing and internationalising the most representative sign of identity of our land, which is music. Why is the guitar such a special instrument for you? It is special because it is the instrument that I have tried my best to master and that allows me to express and transmit myself through music.
