The Last Supper (Leonardo da Vinci)

LOOKING FOR THE GRAIL King Arthur, Percival, Lancelot and the other Knights of the Round Table, Siegfried the crusader, Adolf Hitler, the freemasons, Monty Python and Indiana Jones all spent huge amounts of time and energy in search of the Holy Grail and its magic powers. Only Percival and Indy actually got to see it and, even then, only briefly. If only they’d bothered to consult the opening times of the Holy Grail chapel inside Valencia Cathedral as published in this very magazine, they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. And now Valencia’s mayoress, Rita Barberá, wants to make it even easier. With a view to attracting tourists to the city, she proposes making Valencia ‘the City of the Holy Grail’, giving the ‘sacred vessel’ a central role much the same as, say, the famous shroud in the Italian city of Turin. If Rita gets her way, the Grail will be displayed in a floodlit glass case as a centrepiece of the Cathedral with queues of pilgrims and tourists waiting to get that photo to post up on Facebook, which will certainly take away some of the mystique which has surrounded the Grail for more than 20 centuries. The cup on show in the pretty little

chapel hidden away in the corner, on the right as you enter the Cathedral in Valencia, is claimed by many believers to be the true holy vessel used at the Last Supper. But is there any evidence as regards its ‘authenticity’? Unlike many other so-called relics (most of them artfully created in the Middle Ages), the cup does indeed date back to the first century (or more exactly, any time between the second century BC to the first century AD) and tests have shown that it was probably made in Palestine. So, the time and place of origin are about right but what is it doing here, housed just 20 yards away from where tourists are tucking into their overpriced paellas and Big Macs in the Plaza de la Reina? Legend tells us that Saint Peter took the Grail to Rome where it was used by the first twenty-three popes (presumably for performing religious mass and not for a late night tipple or for keeping their toothbrushes in). When Pope Sixto II was martyred by the Romans, Saint Lawrence sent the holy chalice to his parents in Huesca in northern Spain for safekeeping. Saint Lawrence was unable to bring the cup to Spain in person as he was otherwise engaged being martyred himself on a huge

barbecue built by his Roman tormentors, which I suppose some might call the ‘Holy Grill’ but that’s another story. The Grail stayed hidden in Huesca for the next 450 years, kept safe by a small group of believers, surviving religious persecutions, the fall of the Roman Empire, invasions from Goths and Visigoths and the pillage of northern Spain by the gloriously named Childebert the Bastard, King of Paris. A lot can happen in 450 years and those weren’t easy times but things were about to get worse. In 711, the Moors invaded Spain, occupying most of the territory in just eight years. Bishop Acisclo and his trusted vicar Anderberto fled to the Pyrenees in search of a hiding place for the Grail but were caught by the Moor captain Muza and his men at the cave of Yebra. Bishop Acisclo was brutally murdered by the Moorish soldiers while his loyal servant Anderberto bravely ran away and hid in the cave managing to save the Grail, valiantly turning a deaf ear to his master’s desperate cries for help. Anderberto took the Grail to the San Pedro de Siresa monastery in Huesca Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

where it was kept hidden for three centuries. An asymmetrical star still marks the spot where it was stored in a wall cavity behind the main altar. After passing some time at Jaca Cathedral, documented evidence shows that it arrived at the monastery of San Juan de la Peña in 1071. You couldn’t imagine a more fitting place for the Grail to be hidden away. Perched on the steep rocky slopes of the Pyrenees, up in the clouds towering above the thick forest that surrounds it and inhabited by an order of warrior monks (the Cluny) with no contact with the outside world, it’s straight out of Arthurian legend. Forgotten for 250 years during the Dark Ages, in which time the mounting and handles (made by Muslim artists from Córdoba) were added, the Grail was finally recovered by King Martin I (the Humane) and was kept under the protection by various other nicknameloving Aragon monarchs until it was finally taken to Valencia when King Alfonso V (the Magnanimous) moved his court to the city in 1427.

red agate. Valencian believers say that their cup is the true Grail but bizarrely accept the others as being part of the same dinner service used at the Last Supper. Which makes you wonder how the man who lent the disciples his house for their dinner felt when he came home to find all his crockery had been pilfered, not to mention his table, which is in Saint John of the Cross church in Rome. We suppose he wasn’t too surprised when all his guests were arrested the next day.

chapel of relics, only stopping to give an extremely stern glance in the direction of his subordinate. The Grail was repaired that same afternoon by the cathedral jewellers but the unfortunate butterfingered priest Father Frigola died that very night, victim of a sudden, mysterious illness. One small piece of the Grail went missing; its whereabouts are still a mystery, which might be good material for the next Dan Brown novel or perhaps a Hollywood blockbuster.

Since 1427, the cup has only left Valencia Cathedral on four occasions. In 1810, during the French invasion and the War of Independence. In 1936, when it was protected from the marauding Marxists for the duration of the Civil War by the elderly spinster Miss María Sabina Suey in the living room of her country house in Carlet wrapped up in a newspaper. In November 1982, for the open air mass given by Pope John Paul II in the Alameda and the last time in July 2006, when Pope Benedict XVI came to Valencia.

Rita Barberá’s recent statements have opened up a whole can of worms concerning the Grail’s ownership, claimed variously by the city council, the Catholic Church and the Spanish crown. She has even spoken about gaining Unesco World Heritage status for the relic. Something which is somewhat unlikely, considering the strictly non-denominational nature of the organisation and the impossibility of demonstrating the Grail’s ‘authenticity’.

Valencia’s isn’t the only Holy Grail around the world. One, said to have been brought by Joseph of Arimethea, is kept at Glastonbury. Another is the Sacro Catino, brought to Genoa Cathedral from Jerusalem by the Crusaders; it’s more of a dish than a cup, really (the holy ice cream boat, perhaps?). All of them date back to the correct period and place and are made from the same semi-precious stone,

In all this time it has only suffered one slight accident but with terrible consequences. At the Good Friday service of 3 April 1744, Canon Vicente Frigola slipped and dropped the Holy chalice, which broke into pieces on the floor. Ooops! As quick as a flash, the Archbishop rushed through the horrified congregation and took the broken pieces in a gold box (which he happened to have on him) to the

The restored Grail is now there for all to see, still (until Ms. Barberá gets her way) largely ignored in its unassuming little chapel in the Cathedral, if you feel like paying it a visit. But make sure you get the opening times right or you’ll end up as disappointed as King Arthur, Sir Galahad and Indiana Jones. See www.catedraldevalencia.es for visiting hours. VALENCIA BOOKS

JASON WEBSTER failed as systems. Given the current political and economic crisis, do you see anarchism as a possible solution?

JASON WEBSTER

Tell us about your latest book, “The Anarchist Detective”… It is the third in my detective series centred around Chief Inspector Max Cámara of the Spanish National Police. Cámara is on extended leave after his last case and gets sucked into the murder of a young woman in his home town of Albacete.

Whenever you reach out towards anarchism in that way, as though looking for a new ‘ism’ that could solve society’s problems, it will never work. Anarchism, in my view, can only ever exist in small, temporary and spontaneous environments. It can never be imposed (obviously), nor can it be thought of as an alternative to the political systems that have shaped our worlds in the past. In many ways it is about the absence of politics. How do you achieve that? Paradoxically it may be by not trying, by simply getting on with things in an ‘anarchic’ way as far as you can. I think there are more gaps in the ‘system’ than we often imagine. Anarchism can best fulfil a role by entering into those gaps and operating below the radar.

In the meantime I am busy scribbling away on the fourth Max Cámara novel. Do you see yourself ever moving back to Valencia in the long-term? Perhaps, but I’ve only been away for a couple of months, so it is not really on the cards right now. Interview by Owl

Having lived in Valencia for a number of years, you recently moved with your family to live in England. How do you find life in Britain in comparison to Spain? Why did you swap the sun for the rain?

In many ways the killing resembles that of his sister 30 years before, when he was a boy. In order to solve the crime, Cámara has to confront much of the undigested experiences of his past, and in doing so must square the circle of his main inner contradiction – that of being both an agent of the state and having naturally anarchistic leanings. Libertarianism and authoritarianism clash in a very Spanish way.

Mainly for very personal reasons. It is right for us to be where we are now. That said, the current situation in Spain played a part in the decision. It is not a country where I would like to be bringing up children these days. Even if one could find a decent and affordable school (which is not easy), the lack of hope and sense of despondency has created a generally gloomy atmosphere, which I would not want them to be influenced by.

The book delves into several themes: principally the saffron mafia that is cutting and adulterating the crucial paella ingredient, operating in a very similar way to the drugs trade. And the digging up of dead bodies from the period of the Civil War and the subsequent Francoist repression. The book starts when the remains of ‘Maximiliano Cámara’ are uncovered in a mass unmarked grave in Albacete cemetery. Who is he? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

Valencia is still a great place, and I miss it in many ways. But sunshine and marcha are not enough in themselves.

It could be argued that both communism and capitalism have

Garbo. It is a thrilling story which has not been properly told before – I have collected a lot of information about him, which was either unknown or spread over many different sources. It will be published next April.

Will there be another Max Cámara detective novel and what projects are you currently working on? I recently finished a non-fiction book about a Spanish double agent who played an absolutely crucial role in the success of D-Day. “The Spy with 29 Names” tells the story of Juan Pujol, from Barcelona, who pretended to be spying for the Germans but who was in fact run by MI5 under the code name Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

FOOD

Spice Up Your Life… Chicken Korma By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Whereas in some northern European countries slapping on a few extra chillies is considered a mark of manhood, here in Spain that does not seem to be the case. There seems to be some sort of ancestral subconscious memory of early days of conquests in South America and days spent in the baño … so that the fear of the chilli still reigns strong. A country generally famed for their love of risk-taking, be it bulls, fireworks or fast driving and yet wave a chilli in front of them and they will run a mile! My Malaysian friend had a hard job to convince her Spanish mother-in-law that her affection and culture for eating chillies was not going to harm both of her successful pregnancies. Yet usually it’s me who yelps when caught by that rogue hot pimiento padrón while others munch on nonchalantly. So, I have to confess to occasionally ‘forgetting’ about this alleged Spanish sensibility to chillies in some of the dishes I cook and it never seems to go down too badly. It’s hard to imagine that, in fact, chillies were introduced by the Portuguese to India, and although clearly on the list of other passion arousers such as garlic and onions for a Hindu sattvic diet, was so firmly taken to heart that it is now impossible to think of India without this interloper. And here are a few reasons, when next warned of the dangers of chilli consumption by the non-convinced, why India perhaps did so readily integrate chilli into their diet. Firstly, chillies make you happy; for that hot feeling you feel leads to the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, having an effect similar to opiates, strongly analgesic, giving a sense of happiness and are even said to increase libido! Far from giving ulcers, they help the stomach to be lined with protective coating and aid digestion as well as helping to preserve the food. Bursting

Chicken Korma (South Indian style) • 1 kg chicken breast or mini breast fillets • 1 heaped tablespoon fresh ginger, finely grated • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 150 gm thick (plain) yoghurt • 1 fresh green chilli, chopped • 2 onions, finely chopped • Handful coriander stalks, chopped (keep leaves for garnish) • 1 tablespoon ghee or vegetable oil • 1 tablespoon ground coriander • 1 tablespoon ground cumin • Pinch ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon turmeric • 1 teaspoon garam masala • Water • 1 tin coconut milk • Handful curry leaves • Salt, to taste • 2 heaped tablespoons ground almonds (traditionally, cashew nuts) • Finely chopped coriander leaves, to garnish • Juice of 1/2 lemon

and almonds to take away any sting, is a good starter for anyone embarking on their maiden voyage into the world of curries. So, put some spice in your life and spread the chilli word with this recipe. Chop the chicken into bite-size pieces (not so small that they will dry out in the cooking). Grate the ginger and crush the garlic. Place with the yoghurt in a steel or glass bowl to marinate for a couple of hours or overnight in a fridge. Chop the green chilli and onion finely. Heat the oil and add the onions and chilli and coriander stalks (being careful not to burn them). Add the dried spices and cook for a few minutes. Add the coconut milk and almonds and allow to reduce until you see the oil seeping out. Next add the yoghurt and chicken mix, stir well and cook over a low heat, being careful not to burn. If necessary add a little water. When the chicken is not pink inside, it is ready to eat. Serve with Patna rice cooked with a stick of cinnamon. Sprinkle with chopped coriander leaves, and toasted almonds. In July we are taking a little rest from our monthly activities but every Thursday we will be holding “Speak English” conversation classes and, as usual, Sunday Brunch.

with Vitamin C when green and Vitamin A when red, they are said to help lower blood pressure and prevent against some forms of cancer. Not surprisingly, given the original bland state of British cuisine back in the 19th century and also possibly for its anti-bacterial qualities, the cooks for the British army posted to this far and foreign land also started to incorporate the spice into their recipes. The officers became so enamoured with these new flavours that when returning, they requested little packets of the dried spices to take home, the mix of which became known as curry, now proudly one of the most popular foods in Britain today. Chicken Korma was originally a Mughlai dish but this version is a South Indian interpretation and, with its mild dose of chilli, creamy coconut sauce

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

holding large lamps. The walls are adorned on three sides by images and quotes from famous poets and authors of Portugal and musical instruments of the country hang in frames on the other wall. A few years ago we decided to take a family holiday in Oporto. I am a great lover of their most famous export, Port – or Oporto as it is known in Portugal, after the city. So we booked our flights and rooms in a new 5-star hotel, which was on introductory offer as it had only just opened. It had a pool, perfect for my two daughters and was close to the beach, great for me and D. A few nights before we were due to depart, D had a dream in which we arrived at the hotel to find the pool was not yet open and the hotel was miles from the sea. “Call the hotel, and see if I’m right,” she commanded. “So, you want me to call a 5 star hotel and relate your dream?” When D gets something into her head, you have to comply. “You’re going to think I am completely mad,” I told the receptionist on the phone, “but my wife’s had a dream...” “She’s right, sir. The pool is not finished and we are 10 kilometres from the beach. Is your wife psychic?” We never got to Oporto, we changed our reservations and destination to the Algarve, but that’s another story. I will go one day, but there’s now a little corner of Oporto in Valencia, in the form of the elegant Portuscale restaurant just between the Plazas de la Reina and Virgen. It is by the cathedral, so easy to find. It was the first of the hot nights this year and we had hoped to sit on their relaxing little terrace but our waitress was keen for us to eat inside their attractive dining room. It has enormously high ceilings with artful use of suspended planks of wood at odd angles

Lovely fado music was playing as we took our places and discussed the menu with our waitress, Jardi, who turned out to be Russian. She lovingly described signature dishes we were to eat and returned with two glasses of ice-cold Vinho Verde, crisp and very refreshing, to accompany our first course of Pataniscas de Bacalhau em ninho de Salada (little discs of salted cod deep fried in a light batter (7.00€). But before they arrived the Portuguese owner Maria – this is a Portuguese & Valencian familyrun restaurant, husband and wife and son – arrived with a little treat of Pastels de Chaves em ninho Afface (wonderfully light puff pastry parcels containing a meat filling). She explained that the pastry was the star of this dish, and she was right. We also discussed the people adorning the walls and the fact that not only is this Valencia’s only Oporto restaurant, but the only Portuguese in town. The salted cod fritters which followed were crisp, light and tasty. Jardi suggested that for the main course we tried the most famous of Oporto dishes, a Francesinha (11.00€), the menu said, “Amazing! You will forget the burgers.” I now know that the name means ‘Little French Girl’ and it is apparently the Oporto take on the French Croque-Monsieur invented in the 1960s by a returning emigrant. We had the Francesinha Especial (12.50€) and it is a large sandwich, made with white bread, with a filling of steak, ham and a chorizo-like sausage, topped with melted cheese and a fried egg (this ingredient makes it the Especial). It is then smothered in a spicy, creamy sauce, the recipe of which is apparently a closely guarded secret. It arrived in an earthenware dish and was accompanied by a plate of chips, the traditional way. It was a real surprise and very good to eat.

The restaurant has a great selection on Portuguese wines and after some discussion with Maria’s husband he chose a remarkably good Grão Vasco 2008 (17.00€) from the Dão region of Portugal. It was fruity with hints of cherry and a great wine to accompany the little French girl dish and the dish that followed, Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (Salted cod, potato and hard-boiled egg, 12.00€), a really light and interesting final dish. The Portuguese love their salted cod; it was the Scots who first exchanged salt cod for the wine we know as Port in the 15th century. There are reputedly hundreds of salt cod recipes in this region of the country. To finish we shared a Pastel de Nata (1.50€) – also known as Pastel de Belém after the town it was invented in – a lovely custard tart. To accompany it? A Port, of course! But this was a chilled white port, Ferreira Blanco (4.00€ a glass), which I will be hunting out in bodegas in the city. The service in Portuscale is exceptional, attentive without being overbearing or hurrying. The menu is very reasonable and there is a daily menú both for lunch and dinner at 13.50€ — a good way to try most of what we ate when we visited. They are happy to cater for groups with special menus from 15€. They have only been open two months and we wish them the best. DHRUV KOTHARI Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences. I come from a state called Gujarat in India. My city, Ahmedabad, is the biggest city in the region. I am very fortunate to have an extremely open-minded family. I have had the opportunity to make many trips to different places like the U.S.A. (twice) and Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium in the last few months of this year. I have come to the conclusion that I love travelling by myself. I did my undergraduate studies at SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies) in London, a city that I grew to really love…but it took a while! Berklee College of Music in Boston is one of the most prestigious music colleges in the world. 2012-2013 was its first academic year based in Valencia, set in the City of Arts & Sciences. What is a typical day for a Berklee Valencia student?

A typical day at Berklee Valencia is to be there from 10.00 in the morning till 20.00 in the evening or sometimes even more. We do a variety of things at Berklee in a day: private practice, rehearsing with other musicians, interacting with the wonderful sound engineers, attending classes. I get to experience and be with people from so many different countries every day, including Egypt, Puerto Rico, USA, Colombia, India, Britain, Italy and more. 3. What is the Tabla? Tabla is a North Indian percussion instrument and over the years, it has gained the reputation of being one of the most popular percussion instruments worldwide. Tabla is also being used within jazz, pop, rock and many other genres these days and this is the extent of the popularity of the instrument at present. I have been playing it for the past 17 years but I still feel like I am on the shore. People ask me how many instruments do you play? I say I am still trying to master one and it will take me at least this lifetime to reach a good level. This is the beauty of

the instrument. It is much more than just a percussion instrument. How do you find Valencia as a place to live? Valencia is a lovely place to live in. I love the fact that you have the beach and the old city, which is equally charming. Any plans and hopes for the future? I will be done with my Masters on the 15th of this month of July. After that, I will be going to India and starting preparations for a Ph.D in tabla. I want to teach at a good university in the West and also continue as a performer because performing is what gives me the most happiness. Before I go back to India, I will be playing tabla live in Valencia at Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19) in the old centre on Friday, 26 July at 23.00h in a fusion band. Come along! It’s free entry, too. Thank you.

CHILL OUT & PUB

NEW ROLLING CAFÉ New! Just a stone’s throw from the Mercado Central and the briefest of strolls from Plaza Tossal…you will find the New Rolling Café. Run by the same owner as the well-known María Mandiles restaurants, this cafe-bar-pub is already popular. We’ve chilled postdinner during the week here over juices, beers and infusions. We’ve also grooved to their ‘Electro – Latino’ music pumping outta the speakers (the hip sound of spring / summer 2013) with tasty piña coladas in hand and quality gin & tonics, too…

their mojitos, daiquiris, gin & tonics, sangria, Agua de Valencia and more. Beers include Estrella Galicia and Red Vintage. By the way, Darwin’s father is a biologist, which explains his original name!

The vibe is friendly; every time we’ve been there are people chatting, grooving and having fun! The crowd is mostly Spanish but with some Italian and British, too. Welcoming and experienced head barman Darwin speaks perfect English and native Spanish and knows his cocktails & spirits. Check out

This is a perfect place for couples and small groups as there are plenty of nooks and crannies for seating. Speaking of the interior, it’s a very attractive setting with a colourful mismatch of cushions and letters of different sizes on the blue pastel walls. The soundtrack is fairly eclectic, more relaxed early on and more charged as the night progresses. With house, Latin music, electro, Spanish & English pop and more, there’s an ‘up’ vibe to this place. Soon, they will be having acoustic live sessions during the week.

DON SALVATORE

Set in the cosmopolitan and upmarket Cánovas zone, Don Salvatore is a famous Italian restaurant in Valencia. The experienced and welcoming owner Jonathan, who speaks English and Spanish, is a highly popular figure in the area and the city. He’s a good host, informative and pretty cool, too. We’ve had plenty of chats with him over the years about all sorts of interesting subjects. Indeed, Don Salvatore is well known by Valencia CF footballers and basketball stars as a popular spot for dining out, which is a sure sign of the restaurant’s hospitality, quality and value. The clientele is wideranging in terms of ages and nationality and open to all. Regarding the cuisine, a good sign is that it is emphasised in the carta that only virgin oil is used in their cooking, which “maintains the essence of juice contained in the olive.” With the exception of the meats, all the produce is imported from Italy…making it a D.O. restaurant (Denominación de Origen). This is authentic and quality Italian cuisine. There are 42 pizzas to choose from, including Napoli (anchovies, capers and black olives), Toscana (green peppers and chicken), 4 Formaggi (Parmesan cheese, mozzarella, Roquefort and curato), Frutti di mare (mussels, tuna, squid and prawns), Colosseo (Ham, mushrooms and bacon). There are around 27 pastas to savour and they include tasty dishes like Spaghetti carbonara (bacon, egg & cream), Spaghetti mare e monti (fresh tomatoes and shrimps), Spaghetti al funghi porcini e gorgonzola (gorgonzola and dry mushrooms) or their Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

RESTAURANT own classic Spaghetti Don Salvatore (bacon, mushrooms, onion, cream and pesto) as well as ravioli, gnocchi and tortellini. Meat lovers will be pleased to hear that there are nearly 50 meat dishes to choose from including Steak al funghi porcini, Steak al Roquefort, Veal Toscana, Veal stroganoff, and Scaloppine al vino blanco . There are around 20 salads and starters to kick off proceedings and they include Ensalada di bosco (lettuce, ham, corn, tomato, asparagus and pink sauce), Ensalada Caprese (mozzarella di bufala, tomato, anchovies, olives and rucula) and a tabla of patés and cheeses as well as Prosciutto crudo con formaggio (dry ham and Parmesan cheese). On a sunny Sunday afternoon we headed for Don Salvatore for a mellow, summer lunch on the terraza. It was busy indoors and cool, too, due to the air-conditioning, but we preferred to chill on the terraza and unwind after a long week… This time around, we shared an Ensalada Don Salvatore (lettuce, tomato, cheese, mozzarella, asparagus, tuna, black olives and turkey breast). The salad was impressive… a very generous portion, which we had not expected given the restaurant’s upmarket reputation. We savoured the contrast between the asparagus and the tuna, as well as the cheeses and strips of turkey. Memorable… We ordered a couple of glasses of red wine from Ribera del Duero, which made for a smooth vino tinto along with the classy Italian bread sticks that were served with our impressive salad. By the way, the wine list is varied with red wines like Rioja and Ribera del Duero Crianzas and Reservas available as well as Gran Reservas like Torre Muga and Prado Enea. There are also Italian red wines like Nero d’Avola and Chianti. White wines include Moscato d’Asti and Frascati from Italy as well as Spanish choices like Albariño. Cavas include Dominio de la Vega Reserva and champagnes include Moët Chandon, Belle Epoque and Dom Pérignon. No wonder sports stars like it here! One of us wanted to try a typically representative pizza for the main course and our waiter recommended the Siciliana

OF THE MONTH pizza (minced meat, ham and bacon). Again, it was a generous portion and the ham stood out as the main ingredient of this attractive dish. To contrast with pizza, we also ordered a Scaloppine al Don Salvatore from their wide range of meat dishes, which was delivered on a large plate with fries. It was small pieces of carne in a yellow and creamy sauce, a pleasantly presented and satisfying dish. To finish off a filling and enjoyable Sunday lunch, one of us ordered a dessert of Piña natural, which was fresh slices of pineapple artistically presented on a huge, triangular plate. A healthy, digestive choice. The other postre was more naughty, a refreshing Coco helado, a white coconut ice cream presented in a dark shell, a succulent dessert that was a pleasure to scoop and share in the summer sun. Other choices include tiramisu, homemade profiteroles, chocolate mousse and Naranja tropical. Expect to pay around 25€ each for a night out here, depending on your wine. Don Salvatore is open every day, from 12.00h to midnight. TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH

MAGAROTA BODEGUITA The real deal! Valencia born-and-bred Rosa and her partner Ricki are a highly popular couple in the Barrio del Carmen. They are warm and informed hosts who’ve been catering for locals and visitors with Spanish tapas for a good number of years now. The 24/7 Valencia team have spent many a memorable evening in their company over a glass of wine, beer and lovingly prepared Spanish tapas. By the way, they tell us that “Magarota doesn’t mean anything…it’s an invented name.” I guess that just adds to the appeal of the place. It’s a distinctive, attractive logo that you’ll find hanging outside, a guarantee of good company, enjoyable tapas and a pleasant setting… Previously on the outskirts of the old town, Magarota has moved to a more central part of the centro histórico just a stone’s throw from Plaza de la Reina since last Christmas and it has had a noticeably positive effect in term of visitors. Their loyal, local and bohemian crowd clearly appreciates the move… as they are to be found there most evenings. The interior is smallish with limited seating and a little, open-plan kitchen space. There’s a warm wood feel to the inside space and an old-fashioned, low-key, unpretentious vibe to this bar. Check the original decoration like the rustic scales at the bar and the wine corks and old bottles & objects lining the walls. The meat, cheese and vegetable produce is on display through a window at the bar. On a mellow summer Saturday evening, we strolled along to Magarota for an evening of tapas for two. Dead in the past, the street is quietly thriving, as a growing number of restaurants are to be found here. There’s a light, pleasant buzz about the street these days... Taking our seats on their highly popular terrace, the terraza is an attractive and cool mismatch of tables of different colours of white, red and black. By kind coincidence, the street’s old-fashioned Mediterranean Article © 2013 24/ 7 Valencia

style street lamps emit an intimate, very relaxing yellow-orange light that makes for a perfect, mellow setting for a balmy evening of Spanish tapas amongst friends and family. So, to the food. It’s 90% cold dishes, with produce fresh from the Mercado Central. Thankfully, the menu is in Spanish, English and Valenciano. Tapas include octopus, shrimps from Huelva, Valencian hamburger, potatoes with Canary Island sauce, Spanish hams, smoked tuna, mussels with seaweed, smoked cod, cured Manchego cheese and so much more. Aside from their carta, there are dishes available like gazpacho, salmorejo, tabule and guacamole. These latter dishes change according to the day, so please ask at the bar for what’s available on the day or evening you visit. On our last visit, we ordered a couple of glasses of a young Ribera del Duero vino tinto to kick off the night. It was smooth and light, which did the job. Host Ricki tells us that their wines are young, which also keeps the price of your meal more reasonable, too, whether you order a glass or bottle of red or white. With white bread and wine we shared a dish of duck breast, with a dark hue colour and distinctive, solid taste that contrasted with the softer, pink cured ham from Granada. The assortment of cheeses that we sampled ranged from Manchego to a home-made cheese from Almedíjar, which made for an unexpected range of cheese tastes, running from the solid to the crumbly! The presentation was arty and cool, with the white and yellow chesses nicely cut and contrasting with the black plates. Our next tasty dish was ‘Txistorra cooked in cider’, which was small meat sausages cut into pieces and cooked in cider and olive oil. It’s a popular dish from the north of Spain, including the Basque Country, and is best shared as it’s potentially filling on your own if you have more to come! In terms of presentation and taste, the jewel in the crown was a plate of mussels with seaweed, lovingly presented on a trendy, diagonal dish with an artistry that

MAGAROTA

was impressive, the colour contrasts and uniformity of the ingredients being very pleasing on the eye. Delicious and memorable. For dessert, Ricki suggested we share an ice cream of helado de dulce de leche (milk jam) with chocolate topping and it was a lovely way to finish off the night. A sweet and generous portion, too! Regarding the clientele, it’s a mostly local crowd with a smattering of foreigners, making it an authentic Spanish tapas bar experience in a street hidden away from the touristy crowds but welcome to all. Ricki & Rosa are a friendly couple with plenty of experience in helping you enjoy a day or night of authentic tapas at Magarota. Expect to pay between 10€ to 20€ per person for an evening here. WOMAN again in Benicàssim, a veritable Rasta village, and Seagram’s Jazz Festival right in the centre of Valencia at the Palau de la Música. I am a huge music junkie, especially when it’s live, and for me there is just no greater high than discovering new bands, singing along to all the tunes you know and love, soaking in the atmosphere with a nice cool glass of beer in hand, of course, and having a good old dance. The essence of Summer!

Hi, folks! How are you? I’m in an exceptionally jolly mood today as I sit and write, Carrie Bradshaw style, sitting on my laptop in front of a window, ridiculously overdressed for just hanging out in my flat, as was her wont. For me, you see, this article for our bumper July/ August edition always coincides with the beginning of my summer holidays, and brings back lots of happy memories of suitcase packing and jetting off-ing. Though to be honest, even if we aren’t about to hop on a plane somewhere exotic, tropical or new, I do kind of feel like all us Valencia residents are super lucky anyway. Even if we still have to work our butts off all through the hot months, the City makes it so easy for one to feel like they are in permanent vacation mode if they put their mind to it. I, for one, do still have to go to my 9-5 every day at The Bank, but it’s just another world when the days are longer, the sun is shining and the beach a-beckons at all hours. This Summer I have more visitors from Blighty brightening my doorstep than ever before, which makes it all the more fun when you get the chance to be a tourist in your own city. I will never tire of wandering through the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, ice cream in hand, or taking my guests through El Carmen to explore all the old winding sidestreets and have them gaze up in awe at the Cathedral or the Miguelete. In July, the Feria de Julio is always a fab place to start, with food fairs, concerts and markets popping up in the Jardines del Turia and all over the city. Even when

you haven’t checked the programme you are sure to stumble across something happening at some point (though it’s probably a good idea to check, just to be on the safe side!). On the 28th, you simply cannot miss the Batalla de Flores – literally, a battle of flowers, where you get thrown fresh blooms from a procession of girls and boys in traditional Fallas dress, and get to lob them straight back! Aside from the Feria de Julio (www. feriadejulio.com), there are bucketloads of things to do, and up and down the coast there are so many music festivals happening it’s crazy! The Festival International de Benicàssim, one of the most internationally recognised festivals in Spain, especially by the Brits who fly, drive and train over in absolute hordes, is celebrating its 19th anniversary with a cracking line-up: the Arctic Monkeys, Queens of the Stone Age, my favourites Bastille and so many more will be gracing their stages under the sun for a fab five days of fun. And when I started going, nine whole years ago, there was practically no competition whatsoever, but over the last few years, there has been a literal explosion of new and super cheap festivals with extra impressive line-ups to boot. Arenal Sound, headlined by my other faves Two Door Cinema Club, seems to have done their best efforts to sort the dismal camping situation of a few years back, Low Cost in Benidorm, who boast the brilliant Crystal Castles, so great for a boogie and their live sets are incredible, the reggae fest Rototom Sunsplash,

Valencia’s best asset is for me, though, the beach. Although the Malvarrosa isn’t the nicest beach in the world, you can’t argue the fact that being able to get out of work or even your inner-city hotel and be lying on the sand within half an hour is such a luxury, don’t you think? And if you’re a sporty person, you could even bounce a few volleyballs over a net, or go for a run along the shore, or rollerblade up and down the Paseo Maritimo. I am not that way inclined, so you will most likely find me sprawled out on a towel with a few of my gal pals, covered in factor 50 – got to protect my pale British skin, innit! – with a huge slice of watermelon, in an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini. The end of the day is the loveliest, when the sun is going down (behind us and over the mountains, unfortunately, because if you’ve ever been to Ibiza and to Café del Mar, you’ll know that the White Isle’s infamous sunset over the Med is one of the prettiest sights on the planet) and the water’s warm, and there’s no rush to get home, or do anything else at all. Have an awesome summer, readers, and I will be back in September with more tales of my fun in the sun! Anita Darling

CLUBLAND... SUMMER BY THE SEA IN VALENCIA SUMMER BY THE SEA IN VALENCIA Here we are again, back in the 24/7 Valencia magazine to fill all you guys in on what’s hot and maybe what’s not, now that we have officially kicked into the summer season. Summer brings us many delights here in Valencia, sunshine for one, beach parties, summer terraces, bikinis and Bermudas. For me, the best thing is the fact that we leave behind the heavy winter industrial tracks and we get delightful summer vibes full of saxophones and uplifting ambiences. So, now that you’ve packed away your jerseys and your woolly underpants into their plastic suitcases and slid them under your bed into summer hibernation, I’m gonna give you a heads-up on where you show off your new baggies and brightly coloured vests! There’s no better place to start than in my own event ‘Domscott & Friends’ that we have showcasing in Mist Valencia (Marina Real Juan Carlos I, http://mistvalencia.com). Mist is located in the port area, which you’ll find at the end of the beach within the port rolling down off from the Veles e Vents building. You should hear the unmistakable sounds of quality deep house pumping out before you even get close so you should find it (if not, there’s a map on the website). The party is running every Saturday from 14.00h until 21.30h with plenty of surprises thrown in the mix. My partner John Treacy will be greeting you with water pistols loaded with tequila and ready to sell you an ice bucket full of cold beers (15€ for 5 bottles of Heineken, great deal!!). Adri Castellanos is also there with his major firearm (his camera) capturing the best moments and giving you unforgettable memories. What’s more, the girls from Pilar Tarrazona’s Florist have a hippy market set up where you purchase those necessary summer accessories (bracelets, hats, glasses, floral crowns, etc). You can also find us on Facebook, just look for Domscott & Friends or myself, Domscott, and you’ll find all the links and info you need, any doubts feel free to send us a message! In the port you have various other options for the evening time when the port really swings into life. There are various places such as Caribbean’s Puerto, Puerto

5, Laydown, High Cube, Las Ánimas Puerto and Sunset (all can be found in the Marina Juan Carlos I area) that are all pretty close so if you get bored in one of them or the styles are not your cup of tea, you can swing from one to other. Depending on the night and time, you’ll find various different styles of music and atmospheres that should keep you entertained until 3.00 – 4.00 in the morning. Following that, you can hit the bigger clubs to keep you going until the sun comes back out in the morning: Ánimas Puerto, Mya (Av. del Saler, 5, Ciudad de las Ciencias) or SuperClub 95 (C/ San Vicente, 95) in the centre of town… Another important issue is where to fill your stomach up with a good nosh before you hit the hard stuff. I’m going to give you a few ideas or, better said, a few of my local feeding grounds that I highly recommend if you want to eat well and at reasonable prices. My number one at the moment is Bocado, (Paseo de la Alameda, 1). This place has a simple but pleasant terrace in the main strip of Valencia or you can eat inside in a modern and clean atmosphere. The best thing is the food. It’s tapas but really good ones and you can also get to experience ‘crystal’ bread, which is a new but pleasant experience (well, it was for me), crunchy and satisfying. It’s not the cheapest of places, but then again it’s not expensive, either, and the quality in the food and service makes it worthwhile. If you want to try the best hamburgers you’ve ever experienced I’d recommend you pay a visit to Restaurante Mediterránea de Hamburguesas (C/ Sueca, 45). The hamburgers are gourmet and you can find all sorts of new combos of burger, with truffle sauces, different bread types, choose your meat and homemade fries!! It’s quick and hits the spot, although I do recommend you reserve as it’s always chock a block.

24/7 VALENCIA vocalboothweekender.com). This is an annual event that this year will be held from 15 – 17 September and features all sorts of big names from Atjazz to Spoony, Wookie, Soul Renegades and many more. I’m fully booked this year but I’m already confirmed for the 2014 weekender. You’re probably wondering why I’m telling you about an event in September in the July edition of 24/7. I recommend you book in advance because the hotel spaces within the complex are limited and it is not one to be missed with house music all day long from the big boys in various set-ups with swimming pools and the works, just look it up on the web and you’ll see what I mean. If you just read this, I know you’re already thinking about booking that return flight in September, if not I’ll see you there next year. Reggae lovers are in for a massive treat with the legendary Rototom Sunsplash 20th Love Edition festival at Benicàssim from 17 – 24 August. See http://www. rototomsunsplash.com for more details. Also, check out Electrobeach (Benidorm, Terramitica / www. electrobeachfestival.com) 16 –17 August with Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and more! Please come and pay us a visit in Mist or check out my latest releases and free downloads on www.djdomscott. com. That’s enough from me, it’s been a pleasure, enjoy your summer, don’t get burnt and don’t drink too much: P….. Domscott

Right, that’s enough food for thought, let’s get back to the club thang! For those house heads that live in Valencia or those visiting who want to go on an excursion to Alicante in September, my friend Andy Ward (you may have heard of him) will be hosting the Vocal Booth Weekender in September (www.
