INTERVIEW WITH IGGY FROM RADIO CITY Radio City started as the first juice bar in Valencia and has become a true focal point for music and culture in the Barrio del Carmen. It’s been the starting point for musicians, performers and artists for more than three decades, a place where you can find an eclectic mix of great music and also theatre, art, cinema, dance and flamenco. Multicultural and never limited to one style of music or punter, to misquote Abraham Lincoln, over 35 years they’ve managed to continuously please most of the people most of the time. David Rhead and José Marín interviewed Iggy from Radio City, who told them a bit about the philosophy of the place. How did Radio City come about? As you know Radio City celebrated its 35th anniversary this last month of June ... but the RC of now is pretty different to the RC of then. It started off as a cocktail bar and was very popular for its Agua de Valencia, one of the best in the city some say, and for almost 20 years continued as such. But the end of the ‘80s and the first half of the ‘90s were not kind on the old town and Radio City went through its roughest patch and was sold. It then went through a less rough but just as tough patch until I met Luis, my business partner now at Radio City. I bought in and together we built what we have now. I clearly remember our first conversations, letting go of our imaginations and believing that we could turn things around with loads of good music and even more creativity. The team back then was just the two of us and a load of friends. They were incredibly awesome fun and crazy times that I’ll never forget.... that was 15 years ago but seems like it was...

before yesterday. How did you get the name? What I can tell you about the name is that when I met Luis it was called RC Bar and one of my demands on buying in was that the name go back to Radio City. I was an English teacher back then and used to often walk by Radio City on my way to the Carmen from the academy. Every time I walked by I thought to myself, “What a fantastic name” ... until a few years later, when I saw it change to RC Bar and I thought to myself, “What a horrendous name”. I liked the name then for the same reasons I still like it now. I think it’s timeless – it’s yesterday, today and tomorrow and musically suggests infinite possibilities. El Carmen and the city of Valencia have changed a lot over the years. Different generations have come through your doors and your clientele must have changed. How have you adapted to the changes? What changes have you noticed? I’ve seen El Carmen go from being the place where nobody wanted to go, to being the place where everybody wanted to be. Like you said, Valencia and El Carmen have changed a lot, and in many ways, but I think the essence is still the same. Over the last few years we’ve seen Ruzafa grow with lots of trendy bars… but what you feel as you’re walking through the old town you don’t feel walking through Ruzafa. I think that what you breathe is very different…its history and heritage is what Valencians and tourists alike look for, feel and breathe then and now. It’s been incredible to see and be part of the awakening of Valencia…to see how we’ve

gone from having very little tourism to what we have now. From almost all establishments in the Carmen closing in August to all of them opening and having their best month. I know that many ‘Carmenicolas’ (young people who live in El Carmen, it comes from the word cavernicola, meaning caveman) have not taken kindly to this not sudden but steady growth of tourist population. Some have turned into ‘Ruzafeños’ (and hipsters), but they’ll be back, them or their kids. Radio City is like El Carmen; still the same in its essence…and this, along with other tricks of the trade, is what has made us adapt to every time and trend. After 35 years, how do you keep yourselves up to date and relevant? We are both very aware that we are now being visited by the sons and daughters of our first clients and it fills me with pride to know that in many of these cases it was the parent who suggested they go to Radio City. It’s awesome to think that what appealed to their parents then still appeals to their offspring now. The formula that we came up with then is still applicable today and will continue being so if we continue to pay attention to the winds of change. In one of our first conversations, Luis and I talked about growing happy and old in Radio City and in that conversation decided that to do so we would have to make an RR or Rolls Royce out of Radio City. Thinking back and remembering, I don’t know if we are a Rolls but we are definitely a Jaguar. The number of people living in the city coming from other countries has increased over the years. How has this affected the place?

I believe that the increase of foreigners living in Valencia has been positive for Valencia in every way. Those English teachers who 10, 15 or 20 years ago decided to stay have gone on to become official translators, others have continued teaching, one that I know now has a magazine… and another has a pub. We’ve all brought some of our essence from different corners of the world to this city and this I think is awesome in every way. I come from Sydney, Australia, an incredibly multicultural society and to see Valencia steadily growing into this is inspiring.

account… and creating that public who wants to go see a good gig without worrying too much about who’s playing hasn’t been easy. I think that here at Radio City we like to take our chances in what we believe, and this is what we’ve done with our philosophy of what a pub should be; it’s music, it’s cultural offer, it’s people, it’s staff, it’s a varied monthly programme with sometimes controversial events. Not long ago we did a gig with El Piraña, Paco de Lucia’s percussionist, and on entering Radio City he exclaimed, “This place is full of music”!

Short Film Festival, you may come out of the closet, meet a film director, fall madly in love and go live in Italy … and then six months later be unfaithful and come back to Radio City.

Tell us about the pictures on the ceiling. How did they come about? Is there anyone that stands out?

You have always been quite eclectic in your choice of music and live concerts.

At Radio City we’ve always believed in an eclectic world with eclectic music and eclectic people and really, things could not have been any different. The people, music and even food that have made my world since I can remember has been that. Radio City is difficult to tag, be it for its music, people, staff or even decor, but I think that ‘eclectic’ sums it up pretty well. An eclectic club in a growing eclectic city…what could go wrong?? Hahahahaha… I really could not have done it any other way because it’s what I believe in, sounds and beats of the world, people of the world and learning from all this … or, in other words, INTERRACIAL EVERYTHING!!

And lastly, what do you sell more, beer or Agua de Valencia? Have tastes changed over the years?

The paintings on the ceiling were done by Vicente Talens. I think the idea came about after a few drinks. Vicente has been a good friend of Luis since they were kids and when we came up with the idea of putting up the faces of friends and collaborators together with famous monuments around the world, he was immediately the painter who came to mind. The face to highlight is probably the one that’s not there…. You have always supported live music and new talent. After so many years, have any bands or concerts particularly stood out? We’ve always believed in live music and taken some blows as a result but we’re still with it and will continue being so. I grew up with live music and have always thought it helps create a special atmosphere wherever in the world you may be. Even though Valencia is a city of musicians, it is not a city of live music, unless we take Las Fallas into

Apart from the music, can you give us three good reasons to go to RADIO CITY? A) You may meet the love of your life and end up living on a farm in Australia … if you come in August. B) If you come in May for the International

To be very honest I’ve never been a big fan of Agua de Valencia…much prefer my cold beer. The tourists like it because they’re travelling and enjoying new tastes. I doubt that even some of them take the recipe back… and those foreigners who live here are probably like me; firm believers that, “Beer is the proof that someone (God to some) loves us and wants us to be happy”. I don´t think our drinking habits have changed that much at all with the exception of these blue, red and black vodkas that have invaded the free shot scene and as a result taken the young by storm…but they’ll grow out of it and choose their favourite drink or shot. “Work is the curse of the drinking classes” – Oscar Wilde Interview by David Rhead and José Marín Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

PAU VIGER Tell us something about your life and career as a musician. My grandmother had a piano in her house and I started studying the piano there with a teacher at the age of seven. There weren’t any music academies in Valencia at that time so the following year I entered the Conservatorio. After playing in various groups and orchestras, I finished my Superior (10 years of classical music studies) in piano and later studied jazz with Ricardo Belda in various seminars and with a number of great pianists, including John Serry (USA) and Vivian León (Cuba). How do you find Valencia to live and play as a musician? Valencia is an excellent city with a great climate and a lot of life and joy amongst its open, fun - loving people. However, as musicians we run into many difficulties Article © 2014 24/ 7 Valencia

in playing here and trying to grow musically, too. The infrastructure of the local scene and official support is really minimal. Sometimes we play in really poor conditions and those who want to make a living from playing music often have to travel or go live elsewhere.

Tell us something about your latest album, “Implosión”

Sin Salida is a track about the anxiety we have when a difficult situation suddenly is on top of us.

Implosión is an internal outburst of emotions about becoming a father. The result is the song comes out as a kind of furious Latin Jazz. Blues for Lucia is inspired by Charlie Parker’s “Blues for Alice”, a piece I’ve played many times. It’s a powerful blues.

La Muñequita Enferma relates my experience of the pain of being a father. I wrote the music and lyrics and the song is sung by the Cuban singer Katy Rodríguez. It’s a bolero – son fusion.

Tú y Yo is dedicated to my wife and our happiness in being together. El Meu Sol Solet comes from a popular Valencian song that changes into an uptempo, swinging track.

La Fiesta de los Niños is about the innocence of children and the affection it produces in us.

10 Años Después is about my career in jazz, a career that is bringing me so much happiness and great experiences both musically and personally.

Bajarse del Burro is about our stubbornness in not recognizing when we are wrong. It’s a song in three sections

Tell us about your previous albums. My three solo albums are by the Pau Viguer Trio: I composed those three

albums out of the need to express everything I was feeling in my life. The project for my next album in 2015 focuses more on featuring me as an interpreter. It’s PIMM’s O’Clock By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca According to the calculations of the National Geographical Institute of Spain, summer 2014 kicked off on 21 June at the official hour of 12.51h and will be with us for 93 days and 15 hours, ending on 23 September. So that’s 93 days to enjoy that drink that is the epitome of Summer, a refreshing cup of Pimm’s.

PIMM’s Ingredients • 300 ml gin • 300 ml red vermouth • 150 ml Cointreau or other orange liqueur • Angostura bitters (optional) Garnish

• 1 orange, halved and sliced • 1 lemon, halved and sliced • 1 cucumber, sliced • Chilled tonic water, lemonade or ginger ale, to serve • Mint sprigs, to garnish • Plenty of ice!

In case you can’t get your hands on it, as the liquor itself is not so readily available here in Spain, we trace its origins back to the 1840s and an oyster bar in the city of London, where we follow in the footsteps of its inventor, James Tee Pimm, and do a little mixing of our own. James Pimm’s tonic, a gin – based elixir laced with bitter and spiced botanicals, was originally intended as an aid to digestion and served in a small tankard known as a ‘No.1 Cup’. He then went on to invent other versions with whisky, brandy, rum, rye and vodka, known respectively as 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Cup. Probably owing to the oyster bar’s proximity to the city of London, the drink was well supported by Mr. Pimm’s yuppie clientele and was soon a hit in fashionable society throughout the Empire, where the sun never set, as it continues to be today. The refreshing mix of alcohol, citrus flavours, cucumber and mint make it a firm Summer favourite. Some 80,000 half pints of Pimm’s No 1 Cup are downed during the Wimbledon tennis fortnight alone. So using the Pimm’s pre – World War One advertising slogan, “By my gaff and ghillie, I could do with a Pimm’s No 1!”, let’s get mixing! Mix all the ingredients and garnish

EL RACÓ DE LA PAELLA When I originally booked our restaurant of the month, I wanted to book for an evening but the guy taking the reservation was quite reluctant. When I asked why, he explained that the speciality of the house was paella. “Aaah!” I replied. “OK – then can we make it for Saturday lunchtime around 14.30h?” “Perfect, see you then.” A Valenciano would always be very reluctant to eat paella in the evening, as paella is traditionally only a lunch dish. Only if there are tourists in town will they serve it at night. Saturday came and it was incredibly hot in Valencia – unlike today, when it is bucketing down and quite cold while I am writing. We were moving around as slowly as possible, so slowly that we suddenly realised we were running extremely late. All the energy we had conserved was expended as we frantically got ready to leave. We had intended to travel there by bus, but had to grab a taxi. When I gave the driver the address, he smiled and told me I was in for a treat, one of the best paellas in town. Our conversation was interrupted by the shrill ringing of his mobile phone. It was his mother asking him to get bread for lunch on his way home. He said he’d drop us off at El Racó de la Paella and pop into a bakery after. “Ooh!” exclaimed his mum, “they’re in for a treat, wish I was going there!” “Me, too!” he replied. “See you in ten!” An auspicious start, we thought. El Racó de la Paella is in Campanar, in the old village set amongst the high – rises and behind Hipercor, so it’s a little off the beaten track. It is in a grand old house with 180 years of history and the whole place feels a thousand

miles from the city centre. It has been a paella restaurant for almost half a century but the current owners have had it for just under a year. We were warmly welcome by Guillermo, the maitre d’, and shown to our table in the attractive, high – ceilinged room. He began by saying he was glad that we understood about eating rice at lunchtime and offered us an aperitif – we chose a white vermouth, which came clinking with ice and a twist of lemon. Perfect cooler for the day. We were three and decided on an Arròs meloso de marisco (a seafood soupy rice) as our main dish. Guillermo was to choose our entrantes (starters). The menu at R de P is very small, but, as they say, perfectly formed! Half a dozen entrantes, four or five rice dishes and a couple of postres. When they open at weekends in the evening, there is a choice of grilled meat or fish. We began with esgarraet, a typical Valencian salad of roasted red peppers, salt cod and garlic and olive oil (it sometimes also has hard – boiled egg and roasted aubergine) and it was delicious. This dish, if not well made, can be extremely salty but this was a perfect balance between the sweetness of the grilled peppers and the saltiness of the cod. Our next dish was a Titaina con salmorejo, another salad of brined tuna, tomatoes, red peppers and pine nuts, all floating in salmorejo. It was lovely, too, and the crusty bread served with it came very handy for mopping up the juices (Salmorejo, out of interest, is a thicker version of gazpacho, the cold tomato soup beloved of all Spaniards. Where gazpacho is served with croutons and crudités, salmorejo is usually served with grated hard – boiled egg and jamón Serrano). Then came Croquets de calabaza y boletus, croquets of pumpkin and wild mushroom. L, our croquetas expert, loved them and so did we. I should tell you we were getting through a

delicious bottle of Enrique Mendoza’s excellent chardonnay. Enrique Mendoza is one of the Valencia region’s favourite sons and this wine is a bargain at 13.75€ – only marginally more than off the shelf of a bodega or wine shop. Between courses we took in our surroundings. Most of our fellow diners in this 40 – 45 cover restaurant were regulars, and not just Spanish. At the table next to ours was a group of four Brits who obviously ate there a lot and I am not surprised, the service is impeccable. Guillermo is attentive and friendly, and Oscar, who was to serve us the main course, was charming and told us the idea was to keep the restaurant small and intimate so that diners could feel as though they were eating at home. The star of the show was undoubtedly the Arròs meloso de marisco. A very stylish ceramic bucket complete with handle was bought to the table by Oscar, the owner of the restaurant. He expertly ladled three of the deepest white soup bowls with this delicious dish. There was really enough for four or five people but we just kept eating. It was certainly one of the best melosos we had all tasted. Thank goodness the postre (dessert) was light! A carpaccio of pineapple with a mandarin ice cream. A delightful end to a wonderful meal. A healthy option is the Ensalada Valenciana with lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, corn, egg, tuna and carrot. We enjoyed their ‘Valencia salad’ the last time we went and the ingredients tasted as fresh as they looked. They also do a nice roasted chicken salad. Salads range from 5€ – 10€. MANAUS, SUÁREZ AND FULECO THE ARMADILLO Valencia’s decision to sack their manager Juan Antonio Pizzi and replace him with the former Portuguese goalkeeper Nuno Espírito Santo received very little coverage in the sporting media as the football world continues to have its eyes firmly focused on the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

never be surpassed and the stop made by Gordon Banks from Pele’s header is constantly deemed the greatest ever save in the history of the game. Spain played host in 1982 and gave the world Paolo Rossi, a second round format no one could understand, the sickening challenge by Harald Schumacher on Patrick Battiston, and the chance for Austria to play out a contrived draw with Germany that broke Algerian hearts. Four years later we had Maradona’s “hand of God”, and last time round we had Spain’s tiki taka football, Shakira’s “Waka Waka” dance, vuvuzelas and Paul the Octopus.

The quadrennial event always leaves a lasting legacy of sorts and the 2014 one is currently being nurtured as we reach the business end of the tournament.

But what will be the recollections from the 2014 World Cup, will Brazil be remembered with positive or negative connotations, or a mixture of both?

Historically, other World Cups have given us good and bad memories to reflect over, both on and off the pitch, with the passing of time.

Before the tournament started the signs were not good. The stadiums were struggling to be finished on time as violent strikes broke out over pay and working conditions and public demonstrations against the World Cup took place in all the major cities of Brazil.

Even the most loyal English fan would have grabbed at the thought of lasting longer in the tournament than Spain before the start of the event. However, the Spanish midfield engine of Xavi, Iniesta and Alonso is not what it was four years ago and the lack of regular

FIFA acted quickly and Suárez was banned for nine international games and four months from all football. Uruguay cried foul, blaming the English – speaking press and that a witch hunt had taken place.

If Spain and England had been a disappointment, other nations were playing with an attacking prowess that had been lacking in previous tournaments.

The Uruguayan manager Óscar Tabárez resigned from the FIFA technical committee with immediate effect. Even the president of the country leapt to his defence, and was among the many Uruguayans to meet Suárez at Montevideo airport and give the player a hero’s welcome when he returned to his homeland prematurely.

There has been high drama in several games, with last – minute goals and heartbreaking misses being the difference between victory and elimination. In general, the majority of goalkeepers have stolen the limelight with either some spectacular performances, or intimidating antics in penalty shoot – outs that Bruce Grobbelaar would have been proud of. The high quality of the football on display has helped to dilute the negatives off the pitch and goals have been scored with more frequency than mascletás at Fallas time. Then there is Luis Suárez. By all accounts, he is well – liked and “a good guy” off the pitch. But when the referee blows his whistle, a metamorphosis occurs that only Bruce Banner or Dr Jekyll can relate to. If ever the old adage of a thin line between genius and madman can be seen in life form, then it is through Suárez. Having seen off England in São Paolo, Suárez and his Uruguayan teammates headed to Natal for a showdown with Italy. Well into the second half, and with Suárez having little impact on the game or the rugged Italian defence, the man from Salto did the unthinkable and bit into the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini. The experienced Juventus defender brought down the Azzurri shirt from his neck for the whole world to see the bite marks and the front page headlines of tomorrow morning’s papers were already being written. Having been cited for this action twice previously in club games for Ajax and Liverpool, there was little chance of Suárez not being charged retrospectively by FIFA

Without Suárez, Uruguay could not match the silky skills of Columbia and the rest of the La Celeste squad were soon reunited with Suárez much quicker than they would have liked. What of Brazil ? They have been far from impressive and the fragility of their win over Chile led to many boos and whistles towards the end of normal time. They eventually scraped through a penalty shoot – out but not without a last – minute scare in the final minute of extra time, when Chilean striker Mauricio Pinilla cannoned a shot against the bar, denying his nation a memorable victory over the hosts. Incredibly, instead of spending the rest of his days trying to forget the fact, Pinilla has had the moment immortalized in the form of a permanent tattoo on his back, to give him his own lasting memory of what could have been. Brazil’s encounter with Colombia did not live up to expectations and was spoiled by the usually fussy Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo being excessively lenient. As a consequence, the two stars of the respective teams received little protection, as James Rodríguez had lumps kicked out of him and Neymar ended up in hospital with a fractured vertebra.

Bigger issues Brazil have to face after the dust settles is what to do with the new grounds. The ‘white elephant’ stadiums in Manaus and Belo Horizonte could soon become derelict in the same way as several of the ones used in the 2004 Athens Olympics have if the planners are not careful. The hope Manaus will attract headlining concert acts to a stadium in the rainforest with a tropical monsoon climate is hugely debatable, and construction concerns about the shady infrastructure around the ground at Belo Horizonte were tragically vindicated just after the group stages had finished, when an overpass built specifically for the World Cup collapsed with loss of life. The commercial failure of poor Fuleco has left the Armadillo mascot almost unknown outside Brazil itself and done little to boost the ailing tourist industry, while the genius madman called Suárez has undoubtedly highlighted football’s premier event to the world for all the wrong reasons. Like Suárez, have Brazil bitten off more than it can chew by hosting the event in its current economic climate? Time will tell whether this tournament will leave its audience with a sweet or bitter taste, but either way future hosts Russia and Qatar can learn from Brazil’s imperfections as they wait patiently for their turn to host this fantastic spectacle in 2018 and 2022, respectively. LAZY SUMMER DAYS Why is Valencia making it so difficult to have a good party? Valencia is such a beautiful city by the beach with an amazing history for throwing the best parties in Spain, but lately the local government and the big, “manapolised” (invented word but sounds really cool;) nightclubs are making it extremely difficult for people to have a good night out. First of all, the government has named areas around Valencia as ZAS areas which stands for ZONA ACUSTICAMENTE SATURADA and translates into English as acoustically saturated zone. This means that bars in Carmen can only open until 01:30 in the morning instead of the original 03.30. Of course there are a few select bars which have escaped this fate, such as BOLSERÍA CAFÉ (C/ Bolsería, 41), FOX CONGO (C/ Caballeros, 35) and GHECKO (Plaza Negrito, 2) ……… So how is it that some bars have to close earlier and others later??? Could there be some money being paid somewhere along the line?? I don’t think you have to be Sherlock Homes to arrive to a logical conclusion. So areas such as JUAN LLORENS, which used to be a great little part of the city to go out in, have practically been wiped out, apart from the restaurants. The same is happening with the cool terrace nightclubs down at the port. Before they were all allowed to stay open until 05:30h and now they all have to close at 01.30h, apart from HIGH CUBE (Zona El Puerto), LAYDOWN (Zona El Puerto)and 39 GRADOS / 39°27N (Zona El Puerto) which are generously

24/7 VALENCIA allowed open until 04:30h…. They have also put sound limiters in most of the bars and clubs, which the local government is beginning to control with random inspections. These usually involve USB sticks being introduced into the sound limiters which indicate to the police all of the volume history from the previous weeks. Obviously for each decibel over the agreed limit, there is an extortionate fine which results in one of two things: 1 – The place closing… Or 2 – The place having ridiculously low volume music.

battle like you wouldn’t believe!!! I would have to say that Falkata is just edging it at the moment with DJs such as the headliner next Saturday, Raúl Ortiz, resident at Fabrik. The day before, they have Luciano and Paco Osuna, another two great DJs. Falkata are the same owners as KOH TAO CLUB here in Valencia and they seem to be taking their music very VERY seriously….. ABOUT TIME!!!!!! THANKS GUYS;)

Honestly I don’t know what to tell you guys, things are changing and not necessarily in a good way.

Wonderwall is selling itself as a ‘music resort’, trying to be like Ushuaïa Hotel Club in Ibiza, evidently not as good, but it’s giving it a good crack of the whip. It’s got a great swimming pool and the best thing is, the rooms aren’t that expensive, so you can make a nice little weekend of it ;)

I’m the first one who would like to write about positive things here in the city I have chosen to spend the rest of my life in. There are many, just unfortunately not involving the majority of the nightlife here. It’s becoming more and more corrupt everyday like the rest of society, I suppose it’s not surprising really, just disappointing.

Coco Loco is a great little spot, too, it’s just got to be careful that the other two don’t take over with all the money they are spending on the promo and the DJs. It has been there the longest, so maybe they know what they are doing and the other two could just be a flash in the pan, who knows, I suppose time will tell….

I have heard a rumour of a nice little place down by the beach which is trying to keep it real called GUERNICA PLAYA (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 227), which is open every day from 12.00h – 04.00h. It’s free entry except Sunday evenings when they have specialist dance music nights. The pitch is, they play great underground, current and vintage dance music throughout the week. A few friends have been there and said that it does exactly what it says on the tin, so maybe it could be a good option if you’re in that neck of the woods any time during the summer.

Last but not least, for those of you who will be visiting the Isla Blanca this summer (Ibiza), Grupo Palladium have opened up their latest party hotel called HARD ROCK (http:// es.hrhibiza.com/). This is truly amazing and I am really looking forward to visiting it myself next week. It’s not exactly all rock music, but the idea is that every week there are different artists performing live, as if you were at a festival, I CAN´T WAIT!!!!! Check out the website and you´ll see what I mean, this month alone they have Robin Thicke, Icona Pop, Tinie Tempah, Pete Tong and Jason Derulo……I’ll tell you what it was like when (if) I get back ;)))))))))))))))))

Also another thing mentioning is what’s happening down in Gandía (only a 40 minute drive, it’s not the end of the world). PACO ROCA Tell us something about your life and your career as an illustrator in the world of comics. Like all children, I loved drawing. In my case, I never stopped doing it and eventually it became my job, first as an illustrator for advertising and later as an author of comics. Comics represent a creative freedom for me that many times other media don’t have... like the cinema world, for example. Making comics is a job for me, so it’s very important to choose the right theme. I look for stories that say something to me as a creator of comics as well as a person in the street. What is a typical day for Paco Roca? I’ve been travelling a lot lately – I’m doing this interview from Munich – and because of that, I miss the peace of my home studio. be to have the possibility of working in my pyjamas at home, nice and relaxed. Unfortunately, that is not my typical day. How do you see the future for Spain and its new generation of creative people? The new generation will continue to be as creative as previous generations, despite the crisis. In fact, this generation may be even more creative given that there are no longer ‘secure’ jobs, so people with artistic tendencies will be less likely to look for and find well - paid jobs that distract them from their art. But in terms of the market, as far as projects and publishers, they won’t be forced to look for work abroad. Tell us something about your latest work, “Los Surcos de Azar”. I’ve always been interested in the exile of the Spanish republicans at the end of the Spanish Civil War. It’s a little – known

part of Spanish history, especially their exile in north Africa. When I read about the history of ‘La Nueve’, the battalion that was part of de Gaulle’s Free French army and almost entirely made up of Spanish republicans, it seemed like an incredible story to me. It’s not just because they were the first to enter Nazi – occupied Paris as liberators on 24 August 1944. These republicans had suffered a long camino of suffering and injustices: the arduous escape from their homeland of Spain, the concentration camps in the Algerian desert, the war against Rommel. Their fight against fascism was the longest in Europe. It started with the coup d’état of Franco in 1936 and continued with the battle to defeat Hitler and Mussolini until 1945. Although they managed to get as far as the Eagle’s Nest of Hitler, they didn’t win their final battle – the plan to enter Spain to liberate the country from the fascism of Franco. Interview by Owl
