It’s the end of an era… and the beginning of a new one. Enough people in Valencia have had enough and the corrupt local government has been voted out. Out with the old and in with the new! The complacent & insolent politicians who held onto power for more than 20 years no longer represent the hopes and dreams of many locals. Young people especially are looking for gente who will sort out the glaring unemployment problem and invest in real things like health and education rather than ephemeral events like the America’s Cup and Formula 1! From the very beginning, ‘24/7 Valencia’ has had the quiet courage to look on both sides of the spectrum. We even had the temerity to suggest that in Valencia things were not always as they appeared to be! Sticking to our guns, we have continued to print articles by writers expressing views on Valencia from very different perspectives. Freedom of expression is essential in a healthy democracy. Through all the twists and turns & the ups and downs, there has slowly emerged a real sense of community in Valencia amongst kind-hearted locals and evolved expats. Over 15 years, ‘24/7 Valencia’ has earned its stripes and is now recommended by the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, Levante –EMV, El País, The Guardian, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Business

We are sad to hear that the legendary ‘Finnegan’s Irish Pub’ has closed in Plaza de La Reina after 20 years of rollicking business, endless pints, beery conversations and memorable gettogethers for live football & rugby matches. We dedicate this special June issue to the owner Peter Finnegan and Jamie, Lola and all of the staff and wish them well for the future. Thank you for the support that you have shown us in many different ways... All the best!

THE LAKE OF RICE AND THE FOREST ON THE DUNES L’ALBUFERA NATIONAL PARK With its unique mix of paddy fields, barracas, rustic rice restaurants, sand dunes, reeds, pines and beaches, you won’t find anywhere more quintessentially Valencian than the Albufera National Park. Right next to the city, the Albufera is easily the biggest freshwater lake in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. It stretches out to six square kilometres but it was ten times bigger than that in Roman times and went right up to C/ San Vicente. The area has always played an essential part in the history, economy and folklore of Valencia. These days it provides Valencians with a direct link back to a romanticised notion of their rural past amongst its reeds, mud and channels running through the rice fields. A thin, 14 km stretch of land just 700 metres wide separates the lake from the sea and forms the Dehesa del Saler, with its own ecosystem of rare plants and trees somehow thriving on this delicate strip of sand and dunes. The Dehesa was forged in prehistoric times from silt washed down by the Turia and Júcar rivers cutting the Albufera off from the sea. A series of underground rivers flowing into the lake

filled it, over centuries, with fresh water. These currents have formed a group of islands around the lake. Some of them are just a collection of reeds. Others, like El Palmar, are big enough to hold two dozen restaurants, a community of fishermen, a small church and, on many Sundays, whole coach parties of hungry pensioners and Japanese tourists. The lake is connected to the sea at three points. One is a natural channel and two are man-made. The channels serve as an outlet for the underground rivers and are open and closed to control the water level and to flood the paddies as the seasons dictate.

channels established by the Moors are still in use to today. When the Christians arrived, the land was converted into a private hunting lodge, first for El Cid and later for Jaime I and his successors. During the French invasion, Napoleon gave the land as a reward to his general, Suchet, and there is still a family in France who call themselves Dukes of Albufera. Whether that means they’re entitled to a free plate of calamares at one of the local restaurants, we’re not sure, but there have been some fruitless attempts by the citizens of El Palmar to force the French government to revoke the family’s title.

The Romans were the first to be attracted to the place. It was they who planted the pines of the Dehesa to create an artificial forest helping to fix the shifting sands of the dunes. This is just one of many instances where the hand of man has combined with nature to create this unique area. The Romans established a salt works at the sea’s edge, hence the name El Saler. It was the Moors who came up with the idea of planting rice in the lake and using its water resources to irrigate the land around Valencia. The paddies and

It was the property of the crown up until 1865 when the magnanimous Isabel II ‘gifted’ the land to the city of Valencia (who later had to pay the monarchy the tidy sum of 1,062,980 pesetas in 1911 for the privilege). As a demonstration of her great generosity, the queen gave the rather less tidy sum of 15 pesetas as an ‘administration’ fee for the poor of El Palmar. In the 1960s, during the last throes of Francoism, the local government did their best to ruin the area with plans to

build a rival to Benidorm. Some hotels, tower blocks and a golf course were built but fortunately the arrival of democracy and public outcry put paid to their plans. The area was designated a national park in 1986. The promenade and the car parks were removed and the dunes were restored, thus ensuring the future of the 250 different species of birds which (according to our watchful friends at the Albufera Ornithological station) nest in the area and the 80 species which come to the park from northern Europe or Africa to mate – except, of course, for the odd unlucky one which ends up in a delicious duck paella. It is rice which dominates the whole look of the area. In what’s known locally as the “ciclo del arroz”, the size of the lake is constantly manipulated to the needs of the rice growers, creating an ever-changing landscape. The lake is at its biggest in May when the rice seeds are sown and the surrounding paddies are flooded. They are then drained in

September for the harvest and flooded again in winter to clear away weeds and avoid frost. The other traditional activity of the area is fishing. El Palmar was founded by an adventurous group of fishermen from Ruzafa who met around the palm tree, which gave the island its name. They would spend the week on the island and then return to their homes in C/ Sueca at weekends. They were soon joined in their makeshift ‘barracas’ by broom makers from Torrent who used palm leaves from El Saler. The island was finally settled permanently in the 18th century when fishermen started to bring their families. Within six months of the first women setting foot on the island, there was a church, a school and a sanitary water system. The fishermen were all members of the Comunidad de Pescadores del Palmar, a society formed in 1273 whose complicated medieval system still governs fishing rights in the area. One law giving rights

solely to the male offspring of members of the comunidad was successfully challenged by the women of El Palmar in the 1980s, causing great controversy and dividing the community. These days the town is entirely dominated by restaurants specialising in rice dishes and local favourite “all i pebre” or peppered eels. It’s a perfect place for Valencians to get back to their roots, enjoying their regional dish in the place where the rice is actually grown under the shade of a barraca after a pleasant stroll along the dunes of El Saler or a boat trip on the Albufera. Overfishing and increased agricultural use means that most of the fish on offer is not actually from the lake anymore. Typical of the wide-ranging Spanish fishing industry, the ‘local’ produce now probably all comes from somewhere near Greenland. NES Tell us something about your background and musical training. My name is Nesrine Belmokh and I was born and brought up in France. I’ve been playing the cello since I was ten years old and trained as a classical musician, which is how I make my living. But I actually started music playing mandolin and singing in an ‘Arabo-Andalouse’ group, due to my Arabic roots. Describe a typical month as a cellist at the Palau de Les Arts. Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

A month in the Palau de Les Arts in Valencia is divided generally between a period of rehearsals, first the orchestra only and then we join the singers and all the staging process, and a period of performances. We usually play one opera production, plus one symphonic concert a month.

Matthieu Saglio) in the same project makes it very special.

Describe your new project NES in terms of influences and your vision for the band.

Could you tell us something about the songs that you have recorded as NES, “Ahlam”, “Bye Bye”, “HappyNES”, “La Volonté”, “Prière” and “NESblues”?

NES for me is a real achievement as an artist. The fact that I’m able to express myself as a singer, a cellist, and by composing my own songs (together with

NES is what I call ethno-soul & French songs in term of influences. This band is a project that I believe can touch a lot of people, I’d love to take it all around the world!

inspired by what myself, Matthieu Saglio and David Gadea are experiencing as musicians and people based in Valencia. I write and sing in French, in Arabic (my mum actually wrote me the lyrics of “Ahlam”) and in English. These are three languages that are part of my musical life and permit me to reflect and show who I am and also to connect with others. Do you have any concerts in Valencia in the coming months? We are performing on 20 June in the Espai Mediterrani festival in Valencia (terraza del MUVIM at 20.00h) and on 17 July in the Patio de Las Naves.

What are your plans for the future? I’m currently in Madrid for two months performing as a cellist and singer as the principal character of a Cirque du Soleil show, ‘Amaluna’. This summer, I’m going on tour with Daniel Barenboim and the Divan Orchestra. NES is my priority in terms of the energy that I want to spread and share. LOVE A FALAFEL! By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Going back in the depths of the time to the early ‘90s, there was a sudden burst of popularity in falafels and now in Valencia, with June bursting out all over, it seems they are making a comeback. These crispy fried delights from the Middle East are usually served with flatbread and a yogurt and tahini dressing (sesame paste rich in calcium). There are various theories regarding the name but I like this one; ‘Pha la phel’, meaning ‘many beans’, traditionally either chickpeas, fava beans or both. What I can certainly say is that afterwards you will feel ‘full a full’! In this recipe we combine chickpeas with sweet potato, gram flour, parsley, garlic, lemon and red onion for a powerful health kick mix full of fibre, lots of juicy vitamins, folic acid and minerals. The chickpeas are also an excellent way of cleansing high cholesterol out of your bloodstream. So the only thing that is not so healthy about the falafel is the way we cook them, which usually involves a quick dip in the frying pan, resulting in a crunchy crisp outer. But in this version, we will hold back and use the bake in the oven method. Preparation Heat the oven to 180 degrees.

Love a falafel! Ingredients (for about 21 falafels) • 1 jar (570 gm) chickpeas (or equivalent of dried chickpeas soaked overnight) • 2 medium sweet potatoes • 3 oz gram flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 4 teaspoons cumin • 1 handful fresh coriander • 2 handfuls fresh parsley • 1 red onion, finely diced • 5 cloves garlic • Salt to season • Squeeze of lemon • 1 cup water Yogurt dressing • 1/2 tub Greek yogurt (500g) • 1 dessert spoon tahini • 3 tablespoons olive oil • Juice 1/2 lemon • 2 teaspoons honey • 1 clove garlic • Fresh mint to garnish

Serve in pitta bread with the prepared yogurt dressing and a crispy green salad or coleslaw. La Ola Fresca C/ Músico Magenti, 11 Tel.: 610 026 305 www.laolafresca.com Zona Benimaclet

much but you need it slightly liquid so that you can spoon it into ball shapes.

While the oven is heating, chop the onion finely and squeeze the garlic. Roughly chop the fresh herbs. Cut the sweet potatoes into three and cook in the pre-heated oven until they are soft (you can use a microwave to start off with, to quicken the process if you wish).

Lightly grease a baking tray and place the falafels on the tray, brush with a little oil and bake in the oven for about 10 minutes. Turn the falafels over during the cooking so they are nicely browned on both sides. While they are cooking, mix all the ingredients for the yogurt dressing and place in the fridge until you are ready to serve.

Place the soaked chickpeas in a food processor and break them down as much as possible. Add the pre-prepared ingredients and blend again a little. Peel the cooked sweet potato and add to the mix. Add the dry ingredients, followed by the water bit by bit. You don’t want the mix to be too dry or it will compact too

Of course if you still fancy a trip to purgatory, heat a frying pan with corn oil to a high temperature. Drop a little of the mixture into the pan to test the heat. When it is hot enough, the mixture will float straight to the top. Don’t add all the falafels at once and turn down the heat of the pan if the oil starts smoking. When

lightly brown on both sides, remove and place on kitchen paper to absorb the oil.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CRUDO BAR Some months ago friends were visiting Valencia and wanted to visit the Mercado Central, not just to sightsee but to buy food for dinner. D and I were to meet them in a bar around the corner when they were finished. We arrived at the bar and had just sat down when they called us to say that they were still in the market trying oysters and cava at a little bar in the fish section, so “come and join us”. We arrived to find them happily slurping oysters and supping cava and chatting to the friendly staff. Two of the group were oyster virgins, so the owner was helping them to try the best and sweetest of the oysters. When it was decided that this month’s restaurant should be ‘Crudo Bar’, a newly opened venue opposite the market, I was more than a little pleased. The little bar in the Mercado, still open during market hours, was so good; I was interested to see what else this guy could do. Jorge de Ángel Moliner is the name of the chef / owner and the new venue has been open for two months now. It’s a small and narrow wood-lined place with little wooden tables and chairs and tall tables and stools. We had booked for three, D, C, a friend visiting from the UK, and myself. C was a little concerned when she first looked at the menu that it was composed mainly of fish…she is not the greatest fan of fish. She needn’t have worried though, as there were dishes to suit her meat tooth, too. The menu is expanding to include more very soon. We were seated towards the back of the

restaurant at one of the two larger tables and ordered a bottle of the house Verdejo, a 2014 Rueda called Gilda, crisp and cool (12€ a bottle or 3€ by the glass).

We sat and chatted to Jorge, an affable and amusing raconteur who has recently returned from eight years of living in Russia with his Russian wife. He opened the little market bar last August and this new venture has been open for just two months. Its reputation is obviously already growing as the place was full as we left, full and very happy in the late afternoon. I could tell you about other items on the menu but Jorge told us with a twinkle in his eye that he is changing the entire menu in the very near future. I can’t be sure he was serious, but what is certain is that he is aware of people like our guest C, and is adding more meat courses to the menu. I urge you to make a date in your diary soon and book a table to eat this exquisite food.

The starters are listed in two sections, crudo or no crudo; there are eight in each section to choose from. From the crudo, we chose Ceviche de camarones con gazpacho de tigre (a prawn ceviche served in a glass of gazpacho with raw onions and peppers), delicious and great value at 10€, and from the no crudo, Ostras ahumadas con mayonesa de albahaca (Smoked oysters on a basil mayonnaise, 7€) and a really interesting and flavoursome combination. C chose a Tabla de pâtés, embutidos y foie (a platter of ham, sausage, pâté and foie served with biscuits, 12€), which was almost too much to eat. For our main courses, D plumped for the Tataki de atún (seared cubes of tuna with Japanese seasoning, 12€) and a perfectly cooked and delicious plate. C had the costillas de cordero con patatas y romero (lamb cutlets with crushed roast potatoes and rosemary, 15€), seared to perfection, C couldn’t have been happier. I chose the Corvina con salsa romesco (a steak of sea bass, just cooked, on a tart romesco sauce, 14€), moist and delicious. We finished with a trio of postres, tiramisu, brownie and a ‛mi cuit’ of two chocolates. The food at Crudo Bar is super fresh from the Mercado Central opposite. It is exquisitely cooked and served. There are several ceviches on the menu and both the fish and meat main dishes are all superb.

CAFÉ DEL MAR MEDITERRÁNEO This is the life. A couple of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team strolled down to the historic centre on a sunny midweek afternoon for what turned out to be a pleasant three-hour lunch at Café del Mar Mediterráneo. It’s a place that we’ve been chilling at, on and off, since 2005 and we’ve seen the terraza grow as well as the choice of tapas and the increasingly international clientele, too.

authentic paella that is cooked on the spot, not the pre-cooked tourist trap stuff. The lobster paella arrived in an impressively large dish that looked fitting for four people to share… let alone two! We were handed all the correct implements (forks and lobster crackers) to attack the red Mediterranean lobsters from all angles and we were impressed by the amount of seafood alongside the lobster that made for a rather tangy paella that we shared from the dish. We took our time with the rice dish as we savoured a bottle of ‘Angosto Almendros Blanco’, a chilled crianza white wine from the Valencia region with a smooth finish and trendy retro design…

To start off a memorable afternoon of dining in the sunshine and shade, we enjoyed a delicious Mediterránea salad that was a delightful combination of mezclum salad, a large slab of goat’s cheese, raisins, bacon, walnuts and balsamic sauce. The portion was neither too large nor too small and it was crunchy & healthy and attractively presented on a white oval plate that contrasted well with the colourful ensalada. Our friendly Argentinean waiter suggested their speciality of ‘Puntillas a la Andaluza’, which were fried squid cooked in the inimitable Andalusian style. The squid were quite succulent, as well as a generous portion, but thankfully not overly filling so that the main rice course that was on its way could still be properly savoured…

Café del Mar has some beautifully presented desserts including tiramisu, cheesecake and more. We were drawn to the Lima tropical con sorbet de fresa salsa creme chocolate, a light combination of strawberry sorbet with chocolate sauce and tropical lime fruit that went down a treat on this laid back and warm afternoon. The other choice was Tarta tatin de manzana con helado de vainilla y caramelo, which was a sexy combination of apple pie with vanilla and caramel sauce. Both postres were presented with real artistic flair with contrasting flavours, textures and colours. It was a nice & light way to finish a very long lunch, chatting about the ‘old days’ and gone-but-not-forgotten friends of the Barrio del Carmen…

To make a change from the usual chicken or vegetable choices, we plumped for a Paella de bogavante, which was a lobster & cuttlefish paella. We were informed at the beginning of the lunch it would take 30 minutes to cook as we shared our mezclum salad and fried squids over a couple of refreshing beers. So, here you will find

Throughout the meal we found the blackclad staff to be uniformly friendly and very professional and helpful regarding advice about the choice of food and drink on offer. The menu is conveniently presented in Spanish, English, Russian and Italian. Take your time on their extended terrace with a beautiful view of the historic centre

Coworking

Marcel Kalveram has been working for one year as a coworker at Wayco. Working in Spain for the international Hanno company, he shared his opinion with us:

Come to us for coworking in an international community of workers, a community that works in a different way, in a collaborative atmosphere that will inspire your projects and business. We have prices by the hour, the day or by month and we can adapt to your needs. We can attend to you in English and our hours are from 09.00h to 21.00h Monday to Friday and 09.00h to 14.00h on Saturdays. Activities We have an ample agenda that includes cultural activities, training programmes and networking: workshops, literary gatherings and speed meetings, Wayco breakfasts and community meetings that include economic collaborations, social media and social ventures. Wayco School Learn how to run your business better in the Wayco School with specific training in decision-making and proactive management in all areas of your company. This is for corporate professionals and those involved in medium and small businesses in

“Wayco is a cosy place that is just five minutes away from where I live, close to the historical centre and just a few metres from the Turia riverbed, something which allows me to have a chilled picnic at lunch during the summer months or simply a refreshing walk after a long day of work. Another beautiful thing is Wayco’s El Café de CO and its adjoining terrace, a luxury which you cannot find in any other coworking space in the city. During the spring and summer months, it’s an excellent place for relaxed meetings, some laid-back work or networking with some of the other coworkers. I have come to realize that I wouldn’t want to miss that anymore and so I’ve decided to stay here!” Wayco C/ Gobernador Viejo, 29 (near the Turia riverbed) Barrio Xerea Zona Carmen Tel: 96 206 23 24 Email: hola@wayco.es www.wayco.es

VALENCIA FOOTBALL Real Madrid vs Valencia CF

¡Gol!

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL COMING TO VALENCIA Valencia finally confirmed their place in the qualifying stages for next season’s Champions League, but not before their supporters had experienced the full gamut of human emotions throughout the last few matches of the La Liga campaign. Striving for the coveted fourth place that would secure a spot in the best club competition in the world, Los Chés were in pole position with a four-point cushion at the beginning of May as they headed to Santiago Bernabeu for a match-up with Real Madrid. Valencia started lively and were two goals to the good inside 30 minutes thanks to goals from Paco Alcácer and Javi Fuego. The inevitable backlash from Madrid then followed and, just before half time, the home side were awarded a penalty. Diego Alves has an excellent track record at saving penalties and once again worked his magic to deny Ronaldo. Videos of the event after the game

seemed to suggest the Brazilian keeper had psyched the Portuguese striker out, by getting in his face before the kick was taken and telling Ronaldo, “You’re going to shoot to my right and I’m going to save it.” Ronaldo called the keeper’s bluff by aiming the kick in that direction, but Alves was not hoodwinked and he dived the same way to make the save to the delight of all the Valencia supporters. Needing to win to realistically keep their hopes of the La Liga championship alive, Real Madrid again surged forward in the second period and Pepe had soon halved the deficit to put the hosts back in the game. Valencia had several chances to bury the game but failed to do so and were punished when Isco, a former favourite of the Curva Nord of Valencia, equalised with minutes on the clock. A last gasp save from Alves in injury time ensured his team came away from the capital with a share of the points. With their nearest rivals Sevilla only drawing in Vigo, it resulted in Valencia requiring only one victory from their remaining two games to guarantee Champions League status. The last home game of the season brought Celta Vigo to Mestalla. The Galician club are always difficult opponents and they quietened the party atmosphere by taking the lead through Pablo Hernández on eight minutes.

Los Chés continued to probe without any real punch in front of goal and half time arrived with the hosts on the back foot. The plethora of radios inside the stadium told the fans that Sevilla were also losing by the same score to Almería at the interval. Nerves on and off the pitch began to fray as Valencia continued to struggle and Sevilla turned around their deficit at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Finally, Valencia got the breakthrough when Otamendi tapped home from close range, following up on a Parejo free kick that the Vigo keeper had spilled. Chances came for both sides in the final segment of the game but a draw was the final result. With Sevilla holding on to a 2-1 victory, it now meant that Valencia only held a one-point lead over the Andalusians. With destiny still in their own hands the team and its entourage of fans headed to the south coast to face the tricky encounter with Almería. The rojiblancos needed a victory themselves to have any chance at all of avoiding relegation, and even that may not be enough, as they face a possible points deduction next week by FIFA for the late payment of transfer fees to the Danish side Aalborg for the defender Michael Jakobsen in 2012. The game started badly for the visitors as Almería took the early lead in the ninth

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 minute through Thomas Partey. With Sevilla drawing at the time just down the coast at Málaga, Valencia would still be Champions League-bound courtesy of a better head-to-head against Unai Emery’s team. Otamendi, not for the first time, rescued his team with an equaliser, but Soriano once again put the home side on the front foot by restoring the lead for Almeria. Just before half time Sofiane Feghouli slammed the ball into the back of the net to send both sides into the interval on equal terms. News from Málaga was not great, Sevilla were drawing but Málaga were down to 10 men. Inside nine minutes of the restart in their game, the news got even more devastating as Reyes had scored and now Sevilla were ‘stealing’ fourth place. Two minutes later Banega had doubled Sevilla’s lead at La Rosaleda and they were on course for maximum points. For nearly half an hour, Valencia were missing out on the ‘promised land’ that they had fought so hard to be part of all season. It seemed that it would not be Valencia’s day when Alves hobbled off after a knee injury. The former Almería keeper got a decent ovation from the home fans on his departure, as did Negredo and Piatti, who were also returning to their former stomping ground. In the 80th minute, the away fans in

the stadium and the bars in the barrios of Valencia erupted as local hero Paco Alcácer latched onto a precise pass from Feghouli and slotted past the advancing keeper. Fingernails were bitten to the core in the last 10 minutes but Valencia held on, despite ending the game with 10 men after Parejo was sent off for a second yellow in the last minute of regulation play. Contrasting emotions followed on the pitch at Juegos Mediterráneos as Almería contemplated life in La Adelante and Valencia celebrated being back on the main European stage. With “Job Done” and “Mission Accomplished”, the club head off shortly to the United States for a friendly match with the Columbus Crew. There, they will meet up with an old friend, Nico Estévez. Estévez was the interim coach of Los Chés between the sacking of Miroslav Dukic and the appointment of Juan Antonio Pizzi. In his two games in charge, Valencia beat Gimnàstic of Tarragona in the Copa del Rey and lost at home to Real Madrid. The Valencia native is now the ‘Director of Methodology’ at the Ohiobased soccer club. Things have been much more tranquil across the city as Levante UD head into the summer break. With La Liga status already confirmed after a point at home

to Atlético Madrid in mid-May, the 2-0 defeat in La Coruna a week later had little meaning. The last game of the season epitomised Levante’s whole campaign in many ways, as they grinded out a 0-0 draw in a drab match with local rivals Elche. However, like Valencia it was “Job Done” and “Mission Accomplished”, as the Granotas faithful will be watching La Liga football again come August. John Howden Anyone wishing to watch Valencia or Levante can obtain tickets at the box offices at both grounds, or visit their websites at: www.valenciacf.com www.levanteud.com

CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA Shade. The Berlin duo (Merziger and Kammermeier) are coming to hypnotize everyone with their awesome music, straight from the Frankfurt electronic music scene. Check out their Soundcloud to motivate you to go. Another DJ present that night is the Valencia local Edu Imbernon, with his minimal electro. Definitely a night to go to.

Throw your school books away, and get clubbing! June has arrived, can you believe it? The thought of summer being literally days away blows my mind. This is the time for change and summer love! Now is the tiempo that you start feeling euphoric and you meet loads of new people. So let’s embrace the high, and get smashed. I’ll start off with the always fun Play Club (C/ Cuba, 8) in the trendy neighbourhood of Ruzafa. If you are looking to go on a particular night to this cool club, you could probably check out their karaoke nights… yes, I said cool and karaoke in the same sentence. To be fair though it’s a rock karaoke… OK, just give it a try and see. If not just go on a Friday, they have their funkyindie nights. You can get in for free until 02.00h if you are on the guest list, so I would advise you to get your name down and go early, unless you want to queue outside for a while and pay. TB Club at Veracruz had their closing party on 30 May, but fear not, the location is still open for another closing party. Fayer is hosting the closing party on 12 June (C/ San Vicente, 305). I would seriously consider going to this event, for one reason: Booka Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

If you’re lost on a Wednesday, I would make my way to Av. Blasco Ibáñez, to Ben’s Inn (Plaza Honduras, 19) specifically, this bar with its rustic, wooden jazz feel is home to pool tables, shots and the Pre-Party! What is the pre-party I hear you read in doubt? From 23.00h onwards, every Wednesday Ben’s Inn hosts the preparty which then takes you on a free bus to Ánimas Puerto from 01.00h. The shots are cheaper than usual, so is the beer, and who doesn’t love a quick game of drunken pool? This is a great place to start your night off and to get to the port for free! You can also get yourself on the Ánimas guest list to avoid hassle when you’re there. La Marina (Real Juan Carlos, 1, Parking 6) is now on the map, this cool club has been in the making for some time now and will open its doors this month! If you haven’t heard of it, check out the pics online, I’m sure you’ll be as impressed as everyone else who has been waiting for this day to come. If you go on a Wednesday, you can attend their pop champagne summer where they play hip-hop and R&B in the open air. The entrance is free all night so no need to rush, although know that everyone else will be lining up to get in… the club has its own swimming pool! On that note, they will be hosting their first Pool Party! Not much has been released about it just yet, but keep an eye open for it, it’s bound to be epic. Now this next bar is not very known, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the main places I would recommend you visit. 270 Grados (Av. de Francia, 11) is found in the Barceló building, close to the Aqua shopping centre. You can go up to the 10th floor of this hotel and have a cocktail with some of the best

panoramas of the city, whether you’re a guest there or not. Another terrace bar in a tall building is the Podium Bar (Av. de Les Corts Valencianes, 52), you can’t miss this one as it’s in the tallest hotel building in Valencia, the famous Meliá (previously known as the Hilton Hotel). This area is a popular one and has some trendy bars and clubs to go to, including Moon and John Beer. Podium Bar is also great for cocktails and beautiful views. The third hotel terrace bar I will mention is the Marina Atarazanas (Plaza Tribunal de las Aguas, 5), in the port area. You can find this one on the 8th floor and wouldn’t you know … it is also ace for ‘cocteles’ and wonderful vistas! Right people, I hope you find and love these places like I do. If not, feel free to send me your recommendations to me via Facebook Wills Matt. See you all next time! Wills Matt

about

I have Spanish parents but I was born in Paris, France, and was brought up there until I was 8 years old. I have great memories of growing up in my Parisian barrio with friends from Europe and Africa and I remember the Eiffel Tower! My family then moved to Chella in the Valencia region. It was a small pueblo of 2,800 people…very different to the capital of France! I had my French language skills knocked out of me in the pueblo due to being accused of being “La Francesa” …so I had to fit in! However, I’m trying to regain my French now with some success via my Francophile friends at the bar. In Chella, I was in a local band in the 1980s as a teenager, and I sang mostly cover versions of Spanish songs and we were also popular with the locals for singing the hymn of the local Fallas! Can you tell us about the Bar Los Picapiedra? It means “The Flintstones!” Los Picapiedra began in Valencia in the early 1990s. I took over around 1999 and my long-term partner Dani joined me. He is my third boyfriend who has the name Dani and the later initials GG, a very weird yet happy coincidence! Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

The bar has evolved and I’m happier than ever. I have lots of optimism and we have the capacity to accept everyone here. We welcome all ages, young, old, people of all social backgrounds, alternative or business people. There are no prejudices, it’s a familiar atmosphere and the only people not welcome here are people who have a bad attitude and they soon shove off because it’s not their kind of atmosphere. The ‘New York Times’ had this to say about us: “Locals avoid the splashy tourist traps and pour into the Stone Age-themed Bar Los Picapiedra (Caballeros 25; barlospicapiedra.com), where students, bohemians and miscellaneous walk-ins guzzle cider out of large, spouted glass porrones, which look vaguely like watering cans (7 euros), and listen to Spanish altrock.” We have loyal clients from all over the world including Korea, Japan, Britain, Germany, Italy, India, the USA and many more. Foreign clients have sent me presents from their countries or when they return to Valencia again. A Dutch couple returned with craft beer from Holland, a Tunisian family sent me beautiful fabrics from their country and an Australian sent me a blownup photomontage of the bar from the other side of the world! What sort of food do you serve at Bar Los Picapiedra?

It is called ‘Asociación Gastronómica Los Picapiedra.’ We have a large place just a few minutes drive from Valencia with a swimming pool and large garden on Carrer del Romani, 3, Collado, Valencia, in Manises near the airport. Beginning on June 21, we will be opening our doors to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 18.00h until 02.00h. Here you can chill out by the pool with a beer, have a swim, sip on cocktails and enjoy a menu including a proper paella, cooked the traditional way in the open air. There will also be live music events and the chance to play games like pétanque. All of this for just 18€! For more information or to make a reservation call us on our móvil: 622 887 491 or email: barlospicapiedra@gmail.com 5. Do you have any plans for the future? We have some land in the countryside of Jaén, Andalusia, which has a water pumping windmill and there are waterfalls, walnut & poplar trees. We would like to fix up the house and the ideal would be to convert it into a retreat with 10 rooms for rural tourism. If it doesn’t ever get refurbished anytime soon, we could turn it into a home for geriatrics for when I’m older!
