EL CABANYAL
El Cabanyal is the barrio or neighbourhood in Valencia that is directly to the west of La Playa de Malvarrosa. In this barrio you can smell and hear the sea next to you, while enjoying the views of a barrio full of authenticity and grit. As you walk through the streets, you can see the area’s turbulent history. The colourful residential buildings stand tall and proud even with evidence of previous distress. The buildings are adorned with powerful, political street art which reveal to us parts of El Cabanyal’s past, and possibly its future.
In 2015, this threat of destruction was officially eradicated. However, a new threat was soon to emerge: gentrification. With the new threat of gentrification, the fight to preserve the fierce identity of El Cabanyal is far from over. The cost of living in this area is rising due to its great location; unfortunately, that means locals are finding it harder to afford to live there. More than 30% of the living areas are owned by foreigners now. The goal for this barrio and its people includes modernization and revitalization without destruction and without residents needing to leave the Seriously beginning in 1998 the home that they so much adore. barrio was under pressure to be destroyed by the then right-wing As you walk through the streets of local government, so that they El Cabanyal, it’s impossible to miss could build an avenue. This would the things that make it distinct and mean displacing many people from unique from other barrios. The barrio their homes without proper plans is famous for its ceramic, patterned to relocate them. The residents tiles. Many of the homes have these of El Cabanyal showed power on their exterior, which attract your and passion in their numbers by eyes and attention. The colours resisting this change and protecting used in these tiles are typically El Cabanyal as best they could. bright and coastal with repeated
patterns and pictures. The patterns and colours create illusions and go well with the rest of the barrio. The exterior walls in El Cabanyal range from pastels to vibrant neons in all colours. Their solid, bold colors allow the tiles to match (even when it seems they would not). It’s no wonder why creatives like Ernest Hemingway and Joaquin Sorrolla were so infatuated with this area. Hemingway is quoted as saying, “You could hear the sea breaking on the beach and the lights shone on the wet sand”. In true Hemingway fashion, he perfectly captures the beauty of Malvarrosa beach. Sorrolla, Valencia’s most famous painter, had a gift for depicting the way the light shines on the sand and waves in Malvarrosa. It was in this enchanting port area that he found much of his artistic inspiration. There is even a mosaic of “Afternoon Sun”, one of his famous works, featured on Calle de Mediterraneo.

EL CABANYAL Everyone speaks of the plentiful markets in Valencia. Many are more well-known for their centralized location and excellent goods and produce. The Mercat Cabanyal is not as commonly talked about, which is a shame. This market is just as big if not bigger than many of the other markets. It sells fresh produce, dairy products, meat, and more. Inside the warehouse there is food while outside there are shops for other things like flowers or clothes. Many of the restaurants in the area purchase their goods from here. Don’t let location get in the way of visiting one of the nicest markets in the city of Valencia! Mercat del Cabanyal Hours: M-Sa: 07:00h - 15:00h Address: C/ Martí Grajales, 4 46011 Valencia http://www.mercadocabanyal.es La Fábrica de Hielo easily claimed its name as one of our new favorite “chill-out” spots. This artistic and diverse space hides in the barrio of El Cabanyal, just next to the beach. Revamped from an abandoned ice factory; on the inside there is natural light that pours from the ceiling to illuminate a playful, hipster interior with colourful mismatching decor. In fact, the same people that created Convent Carmen created La Fábrica de Hielo. This is a great place to grab a drink, hangout with friends, and grab a bite from locally sourced food. They also often have live music! Check out La Fábrica de Hielo to feed your artistic side. Every week on Wednesday, twenty one restaurants around the neighborhood are participating in “Ruta de La Tapa Marinera + Vermut”. Visit any of the restaurants on the list and let them know you are participating; they will give you a tasty vermouth drink accompanied with a fresh tapa, often sourced from local ingredients, for only 3.50€! The list of restaurants has a variety of cuisines so you can pick and choose which you prefer to go to. If you go to every restaurant and collect each of their stamps you get a prize! Different restaurants participate at different times all throughout the day. Ruta de La Tapa is going on until the 9th of October. This is a great deal and a great way to discover new, delicious restaurants all right near or next to La Playa Malvarrosa!
Come to Bodeguita de Nerea for an incredible “medio menú del dia” in a cosy setting. For 8.50 euros you can take your pick from a selection of flavourful starters, entrées, and a drink or dessert. There are many seafood options that match the nautical environment of the neighbourhood. This place also offers a Ruta Tapa deal on Wednesday at 12h-13:30h/0h21:30h). Don’t miss out on the great deals and excellent meals! Bodeguita de Nerea Address: Calle Reina, 217, 46011 València Hours: M-Su: 12:30-16, 20:00-00 Facebook: https://www.facebook. com/LaBodeguitadeNerea/ Espadan 31 also offers Mediterranean Ruta Tapas on Wednesday from 11-13h/17h20h. Hermanos Haro Bar is a charming cafe/bar in Cabanyal. Diners have the option to dine indoors or outdoors and the relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to spend hours here without even noticing it. Decorated with breezy murals Espadan 31 and mosaic, this is a great place Address: Calle Espadan 31 to enjoy a “desayuno” of orange Hours: Mo-Su: 9:00-23:00 juice, coffee, and a fresh pastry. Head down to the coastline and visit Malvarrosa Beach if you’re craving a relaxing beach day. The sand is soft and the water is an inviting cerulean blue. Hemingway even described the “stupendous feeling of eating a melon washed down with a real cold jug of beer” on the beach in Valencia. Pick some fresh melon and beer up from the Mercat del Cabanyal and head to the beach and try it! Afterwards, you could spend hours in the ocean alone as the temperature is comfortable while refreshing. El Cabanyal is a beautiful and unique place whose residents care deeply for their homes and their identity. However, many are afflicted by the constant threat of having to move out due to gentrification. Don’t lose hope, there are options that can help preserve what makes ‘El Cabanyal’ so special and authentic. You can speak to your elected officials on this issue, if anything proves that there is strength in numbers it is El Cabanyal. You can also insist on affordable housing and closely regulate all government and bank owned property. Article by Nathalie Feingold & Quincy Walter

THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF VALENCIA
Founded by the Romans in the year 138 BC, under Visigoth control in 476 AD, and rebuilt under Moorish rule in 714 AD; Valencia has an incredibly long and tumultuous history. There are few places where this history is more visible than in the Barrio del Carmen, located in the historic centre of Valencia. The area is named after the Carmen Calzado convent and church. The centre appears to be “guarded” by impressive and formidable towers called the Serranos Towers. These gothic towers were originally constructed in the 14th Century to guard the city; however, do not let that mislead you. It only takes a short time exploring the barrio for you to realize just how welcoming and fun the historic centre is, for visitors and locals alike.
The Moorish influence is felt when navigating through the narrow, winding streets and looking at the historic Moorish walls. There are many historical buildings that have since been re-purposed to cafes, bars, and shops. The old-timey feel is still there but the feeling of life that pulsates throughout the historic streets and buildings at all hours is highly evident. This is an area that is rich in culture; walking through the streets you will see vibrant street art, shops owned by local artisans, and several avant-garde museums. You can easily spend days here without ever feeling the need to leave this hip neighbourhood. It is full of life at all hours of the day and the already lively streets become even more spirited after the sun sets.

FOOD/DRINK:
Restaurante Yuso is an authentic Valencian restaurant in the centre where you can choose from a wide array of tasty tapas or rice dishes including steaming helpings of paella. We ordered the ‘Paella de Verduras’, a lovely rice dish option for vegetarian customers or anyone who just needs their veggies! This restaurant has two locations; the Plaza del Carmen branch and the original Yuso restaurant on Calle de la Cruz. The Plaza del Carmen branch offers a pre-fixed lunch, which differs each weekday. The original branch on Calle de la Cruz is only open at weekends. We went to the Plaza del Carmen branch for lunch and were pleased to be surrounded by rooms filled with cheerful families and satisfied customers. RESTAURANTE YUSO Addresses: Calle de la Cruz, 4 / Plaza del Carmen, 6 46003 València Hours: Monday - Saturday : 13:30h-16:30h, 20:30h-24:00h, Sunday: 13:30h-16:30h Website: http://www.restaurantesyuso.com Another significant reason to hop over to Barrio del Carmen is their many options of vegetarian and vegan restaurants. The first vegetarian restaurant opened in Valencia in 1980 as Restaurante ‘La Lluna’, and is located in the historic Barrio del Carmen. Today, they continue their succession of interesting and special dishes that would be hard to find anywhere else around the city, due to their originality and freshness. Restaurante La Lluna is inspired by Oriental, African, and Latin
influences for food and flavour. Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, you will find yourself satisfied with their range of options including hot and cold dishes, appetizers, and entrées. For lunch, Monday through Friday, they have a Menú del Día with dishes that change on a daily basis so you can be sure they are new and atypical! This menu starts at just 8.50€.
We recommend the mix-dip with three different kinds of fresh hummus and their large grain bowls. Here, this agape, natural space gives off organic island vibes and makes you happy to eat healthy!
RESTAURANTE LA LLUNA Address: Calle San Ramon, 23, 46003 València Hours: Monday through Saturday: 9:00-16:00, 20:30-23:20, Closed Sundays

Website: http://www.restaurantelalluna.es Additionally, ‘Almalibre Açaí House’ is a small chain restaurant and we are lucky to have one in Valencia. They have four locations, three in Spain and one location in Miami, Florida. Almalibre is open from 11:00h to 23:00h and serves what you are looking for whether it be breakfast, dinner, or a quick bite (or drink!). Their centre of interest here is on the açaí bowls, a Brazilian fruit that is considered one of the healthiest with its antioxidants, proteins, omegas and fibres. You can be sure what you eat and drink here is clean and healthy from the açaí bowls to the grain bowls. Their menu features a solid lineup of fresh smoothies and drinks, while also giving you the fun option of create-your-own açaí bowls and vegan burgers. But that’s not all.
ALMALIBRE AÇAÍ HOUSE Address: Calle de Roteros, 16, 46003 València Hours: Tuesday through Sunday: 11:00-23:00, Closed Mondays
When you pass by Café Sant Jaume, it is clear it must belong in the historic district of Valencia. You are greeted by a comforting feeling of history and tradition when faced with the interior of the cafe, what started as a pharmacy over 100 years ago. Today, you will see a wall filled with liquor bottles and cheerful waiting staff. The pharmacy was bought and transformed into one of the first legendary café bar meeting points in the heady1980s Barrio del Carmen period. This Café is loved by locals, tourists, and even celebrities for its laidback and friendly atmosphere. Much of the seating is outdoors; surrounded by small, pedestrian-filled sidewalks in the middle of the district. Go for a quick coffee or stay a while with pitchers of ‘Agua de Valencia ‘or Sangria big enough to split for eight people - so bring a friend (or seven)! THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF VALENCIA Convent Carmen is a historic convent that has been transformed into an enchanting open air bar. There are several places to grab food or drinks once inside the convent walls. It’s hard to tell exactly what you are in for at first because the walls surrounding the convent are massive and impossible to see over. But within the walls it’s like an all-day street fair with fairytale lighting and many cozy places to chill out. There are events such as screenings, debates, and live performances held several days a week inside the convent. Convent Carmen is as much an intellectually stimulating experience as it is a relaxing one! FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA BACK TO REALITY WITH ‘GREEN BULLET BLEND’ Back to school or not, September brings the start of a return to routine and the opportunity for a fresh start. Recent research into how our bodies process calories has blown all previous theories out of the water. The investigation shows that a diet that may work for one will not necessarily work for another… but that sleep, stress and exercise play a monumental role. One day, there will be a bossy little machine to tell us exactly what we should eat for our individual DNA. Until that day arrives, apart from exercise and building up a better fat-to-muscle ratio…what is most important is to move towards a more sustainable diet that is based on the nurturing element of our food. So, if you are standing on the scales contemplating your little tummy tum, here are some pointers to kick off with. Fasting is involved in most religious or cultural traditions. Based on the new research findings, it seems that intermittent fasting definitely helps the body to regenerate and aid the gut.
Make up a mix of gamazio with sesame seeds, by grinding brown sesame seeds and sea salt with a little spice. Keep it at the ready to add extra taste and healthy calcium benefits of sesame to any salads or savoury dishes. Anything with added sugar, known as free sugars are about to cost your waistline yet more sit ups. So, except for the occasional treat, try to avoid them. The more fibre, the more difficulty the body will have in converting them into energy. For example, an orange juice contains 2.5 times the amount of sugar to a normal orange. As a rule, always go for the option with more fibre. By eating the skin of an apple you’ll be reducing its sugar content. Strawberries, peaches, grapefruit, avocados and berries are the best source for lower sugar fruits. Bananas are a good source of potassium but are high in sugars, so buy unripe ones and keep them in the freezer ready to use in snacks or smoothies. Whatever their sugar content, all fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins and fibre and will boost your immunity and vitality and should be an important lynchpin of your diet. As ‘La Ola Fresca’ team is heading off on holiday on the 4th of September, we leave you with this recipe of our detox Green Bullet Blend.
Presumably, it is because this reflex is for once not overwhelmed and able to get into action. When you do ‘break-fast’ make sure you do so with a long-lasting, low sugar option. Porridge or soaked muesli such as the Bircher recipe will give you a slow-releasing energy, to sustain you during the day. Eggs are hard to beat as a low saturated fat source of protein, with immune-boosting iron & vitamins. We recommend you give it a whirl! We will be back on September 16th Use high fibre carbohydrates and with a special return party on such as legumes, pumpkin, brown Friday, September 20th at 20:00h rice or quinoa to satiate hunger with ‘Hola La Ola, Ola Ceviche’ and for good energy sources. + Advance booking essential!

RESTAURANTE LÓPEZ PUERTO
‘LÓpez Puerto’ started out as a family-run business back in 1954, specializing in ibérico meats in Spain. Their acorn-fed pigs are raised in open fields, which results in the legendary ‘bellota’ jamón ibérico that is rated as one of the top four hams in the world. Their ibéricos are so in demand that they now export to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and more…
In Valencia, you can savour their range of jamónes, distinctive cheeses, delicious salads, superb steaks and more at “López Puerto Restaurante.” It is excellently located just off Plaza Ayuntamiento. After lunching here on a sunny Saturday, the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team were left impressed by the sheer quality of the cuisine, the love put into the preparation and presentation of each dish and the relaxed atmosphere amongst diners.
They have a friendly and knowledgeable staff at your service. The restaurant has a very clean and fresh interior; all adding up to making this is a most enjoyable place to savour a menú de degustación or the wider ranging carta for lunch or evening dinner during any month of the year. VALENCIA FOOTBALL
START TO THE SEASON
Valencia fans could be forgiven for having a feeling of “Déjà vu” as this season’s efforts to date mirror the same lukewarm fashion the team started last year’s La Liga campaign. Given what looked like a favourable opening batch of matches by the La Liga computer, the opportunity to hit the ground running with a cluster of victories looked to be there for the taking. Instead, a brace of uninspiring performances against Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo left the club with a single point and murmurs of discontent swelling amongst the press and socios alike. A win in their third game at home to Mallorca was a relief but the way they achieved it was not always well received by the crowd. The opening game against Sociedad at the Mestalla should have been wrapped up good and proper… before the Basque side denied Los
Che victory with a last gasp penalty in the 100th minute of the game. By then, Rodrigo had missed an open goal and Gameiro had fluffed a penalty that would have put the match out of reach and got Valencia off to a winning start. The trip to Vigo was equally frustrating, and was synonymous with many of the away defeats of last year. The team started well with enterprising play but then got hit with a sucker punch after failing to capitalise on some gilt-edged chances.
Valencia their first clear opportunity. Parejo grabbed the ball immediately showing his intent to be the taker. He calmly slotted the ball home to give the hosts a slender lead at the interval, a scoreline that Valencia barely deserved. The second half brought a better response from Valencia and, when Parejo converted his second penalty of the game, the whole team relaxed and started playing some attractive football. The icing on the cake for the fans was the introduction of substitute Kang-in Lee for a ten minute cameo that saw the South The only positive to come out of Korean go on a wonderful mazy run the performance in Galicia was the with his first touches in the match. display by the new keeper Jasper Cillessen, who saved a penalty from his former Barcelona team-mate Denis Suarez, late on in the game. Game three gave Valencia the opportunity to put things right. Another sluggish start had the Mestalla ringing in a chorus of boos midway through the first half, by which time the visitors had already hit Cillessen’s post twice and rattled the bar. It took a surging run from Coquelin to earn his team a penalty, just before halftime, to give
35
It was the best onfield performance by Valencia in the league to date, but Mallorca showed very little, and it could well be all about trying to avoid relegation for the team from the Balearic Islands this year. Off the field, things have not faired so well for Valencia either . The ongoing saga of whether Rodrigo is staying or going has not helped the stability of the team and the constant links with Rafinha of FC Barcelona have been unsettling too. Rodrigo at one point last month left the Paterna training ground and headed to Madrid only to turn round the same day, after the 60 million transfer plan fell through. If rumours from sources close to the club are to be believed, then the Rodrigo and Rafinha situations have tainted the relationship between the owner Peter Lim and the management staff of Marcelino and Alemany. It seems the latter want Rodrigo to stay and they are ultra-keen on bringing Rafinha to the Mestalla. Whilst Lim sees selling Rodrigo as good business sense, he sees Rafinha as a liability due to his age and history of injuries. With the transfer window in Spain closing shortly, it seems that Marcelino will get his way with Rodrigo, and Lim with Rafinha. It remains to be seen how these disagreements will affect their relationship on a more permanent basis. However, it is highly likely that Valencia will either look to dip once more into the transfer market before the deadline or look to secure a loan deal in the near future for a right-sided defender. A devastating injury to Cristiano Piccini during training, that has ruled him out of action for several months, leaves that right back spot looking particularly vulnerable. Daniel Wass has played in that position from
time to time but he is not a natural there. Ready-made replacement Rúben Vezo is now across the city at Levante UD, after making his loan from last season permanent during the summer months. Despite these irritating issues off the field and an average start on it, Valencia fans still have lots of things to be thankful for… including a Champions League draw that will leave the club confident of progressing to the knockout stages. Chelsea, Ajax and Lille will be the opponents for Los Che in the biggest club competition in the world. Top seeds Chelsea have had a similar start to Valencia and seem to be in a rebuilding phase after losing David Luiz and Eden Hazard. Their new manager Frank Lampard looks to be placing faith in youth and an atmospheric cauldron like the Mestalla on a European night could prove unnerving for some of the inexperienced Londoners. Ajax have been a victim of their own success. Several of their key players from last year that saw the team from Amsterdam reach the European Cup semi-finals have moved to either Spain or Italy. A struggle to get through the qualifying stages against PAOK of Greece, and APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus, suggests they are not as strong as their second seeding in the group would imply.
The lowest ranked team in Group H are LOSC of Lille. The club from Northern France could manage an upset against any of the other three teams, especially on home soil. However, the loss of their talisman forward Nicolas Pépé to Arsenal in the summer transfer window greatly hinders their chances of progress Across the city at Levante UD, the ‘Granotas’ go about their business quietly but effectively. A battling victory at ‘El Estadi Ciutat de València’ over Villarreal cancelled out a single goal defeat at Alavés on the opening day of the season. A 2-0 home win over Real Valladolid has given Levante two victories from three games and a fantastic boost in confidence. They are looking to stay well clear of a relegation battle this campaign. That only Atlético Madrid can boast maximum points at this early stage of the season indicates that the gap between the top and bottom of La Liga is closing rapidly, and that it would be no surprise to many at the end of the season if an unfamiliar name claimed a Champions League berth, at the expense of one of the usual suspects. SHOPPING: VINTAGE IN VALENCIA The vintage scene in Valencia is vastly present and growing. In streets such as C/ Colón and the hip barrios of Ruzafa and Carmen, there are vintage stores that have clearly developed their own brand and personality, which line the sidewalks. The recreation and selling of retro, edgy and bohemian styles that mirror images from the 1940s to the early 2000s, is an up-and-coming movement led by younger generations throughout the world. Valencia’s vintage presence runs parallel to those of Paris, London, and other parts of the globe, including large cities in the United States like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Finding vintage pieces that correspond with your own style and charisma is the most important part of vintage shopping. Luckily, Valencia has so many options that there is a spot for everyone to find their own groove and express themselves through clothing and other eccentric accessories.
SANTA BARBARA Located on Colon Street (C/Colón), Santa Barbara Store is right in the hub of Valencia’s shopping district. As the crowds of C/ Colón populate the streets, its downstairs entrance can be hard to miss but, once you walk down its art-lined steps, you enter a beachy and relaxed atmosphere. The racks of clothes include retro bathing suits, a wide denim selection and vibrant patterns of brands like Adidas, Nike, and Levi’s. The coolest part? The music is always fun and upbeat, making shopping here a cool experience. On every item there are also classic songs written on the tags… a little detail that definitely correlates with this store’s vibe. Soho Del Carmen is the perfect spot. It is tucked between the narrow roads of the historic Carmen district and its selection includes matching two pieces from the 1950s, flirty flapper dresses, and the coolest faux-fur accessories. The trendy staff at Soho is eager and always willing to help you find the perfect piece, and if this place wasn’t quirky enough, random bands and artists will even sometimes make a quick, live appearance! This store has a very dark and artsy charisma to it, and is different in the way that it sells clothing, as well as old record players, sewing machines, suitcases, costumes and other trinkets. The clothing selection is very old-style European with pieces mimicking royal and pristine styles. This spot is enchanting in the way that once you step in; you can’t help but be amazed by the historic value of the pieces, which creates an enchanting kind of mysteriousness. To acquire any of these pieces would be an absolute privilege. Address: Calle Puerto Rico, 30, 46006 Valencia Phone: 963 25 59 41 Instagram: @madame.mim.shop Article by Sarah Medrano

THE HOLY GRAIL OF VALENCIA is a magnificent gothic chapel. It was the cathedral’s ancient chapter house. For centuries, it has exhibited the medieval chains of the Port of Marseille on its walls. The chapel features a pew of medieval stone and was where the reception was held for the last Pope who visited Valencia, who was Benedict XVI. The description of the object.
INTERVIEW WITH EXPERT DR ANA MAFÉ GARCÍA (HISTORY OF ART) Tell us about your background, education and travels... I studied at a school called Santa María Marianistas in my village of Alboraya- where horchata is made in Valencia. I've been well-educated in the Catholic faith. I studied tourism at the official School of Tourism in Madrid and earned my Master's degree in environmental tourism: Ecotourism at the Polytechnic University of Madrid at the Higher Technical School of Engineers in Montes. I am also a graduate, master, and doctor Cum Laude with international mention in Art History at the University of València. For my research I have travelled abroad to the Middle East: Istanbul and Jerusalem. In Europe I have been to Faro, London and Rome. In Spain, I have been
to Córdoba, Navarra, San Juan de la Peña, Jaca, Zaragoza, and to all of the Territory of the Grail in the Valencian Community. What is the Holy Grail? The Holy Grail is the most important relic of Christianity. According to tradition, it is the cup from which Jesus Christ drank during The Last Supper. Since 1437 it has been in the Cathedral of Valencia, but it was not until 1916 when it was publicly exhibited in its current location. It was previously hidden with other treasures in the cathedral’s reliquary, where the public could not access it. The Holy Grail is the Holy Chalice of the Valencia cathedral. The Holy Chalice can be found in the Chapel of the Holy Chalice. This
The holy chalice is composed of three parts: - A top part made of stone 4 fingers long (the relic). - A middle part that is made out of gold in the 11th century that serves to showcase and sustain the ancient relic. - A base that is decorated in the Carolingian style that visually balances the piece. This is probably from the Fatimid period (8th-9th centuries). The reliquary is made of gold with the niello technique around the 11th century; this technique was used because the relics couldn’t be touched with their hands. In the Middle Ages, not even kings could touch the relics. It must be known that the actual relic is only the upper portion of the cup. The rest is what is known in liturgical theology as the “reliquary”. The reliquary is used to show and exhibit the Holy Grail. That is why there are two handles, so the Grail can be lifted. As I mentioned, the base has origins of the Fatimid period, between the 8th and 9th centuries. It is decorated in gold in precious stones in the Carolingian style. There are three types of jewels featured throughout: 28 pearls, 2 rubies, and 2 emeralds. Each symbolizes an aspect related to the Holy Grail in Medieval Times.

Can you tell us about the route the Holy Grail took from Jerusalem to Valencia? This oral tradition begins with the story of Saint Lawrence when he was about to be martyred by Emperor Valerian (circa 258). Saint Lawrence, instead of surrendering the treasures of the Church to the Emperor, followed the mandate of Pope Sixtus II by saving and separating the treasures of the Church.
Martín Lloris, on this subject. In the fifteenth century, the city of Valencia was like the New York of the Mediterranean. The king even moved the court of the kingdom of Aragon to the city of Valencia. And on that journey, Alfonso the Magnanimous brought with him all of his royal treasures. Since Valencia was the most important city in the entire Western Mediterranean, the holy relic came to the city.
The relic was escorted from Rome to Osca, the hometown of Saint Lawrence, to safeguard the most precious of treasures: the cup that Jesus used in his last supper. With the Saracen invasion of the Peninsula in the year 711, the inhabitants of Osca and the bishop were safe in the Pyrenees with all of their relics.
Later, in the year 1437, the king decided that it was to be guarded in the cathedral for safe-keeping. From 1437 to today the relic has been held in the cathedral and revered without interruption.
Finally, the most holy portion of the holy chalice was kept in a very hidden place, a monastic centre dedicated to San Juan that later became the Royal Pantheon Monastery of San Juan de la Peña. This is the place where the first kings of the crown of Aragon are buried. There, in around the 11th century, the reliquary was added. The reliquary has a golden base and two handles. There is a notarial deed from 1399 that officially explains the provenance of the holy chalice in the archives of the Crown of Aragon. Since then, the monastery of San Juan de la Peña suffered three devastating fires. From then on, there is documentation such as various inventories of the reliquary of the King of the Crown of Aragon that explain how it arrived at the Cathedral of Valencia. There is also excellent documentary research work done in 2010, by Dr. Catalina
What proof do you have that Valencia has the authentic Holy Grail? In the year of 1960 Dr. Antonio Beltrán, Professor of Archeology at the University of Zaragoza, confirmed that the chalice would have originated between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century BC. The way to date artifacts in Archaeology is through comparison and by "constructive technique".

This stone is linked to the same time as the Second Temple of the pectoral of the High Priest which represents the tribe of Judah (the same as Jesus) and symbolizes the rule of love. Therefore, we have a Hebrew cup from the Second Temple that represents the tribe of Judah, which in turn reflects the Jewish worldview of the rule of love. If we consider the scenario recounted in the canonical gospels of the New Testament (the canons of St, Matthew, St. Mark and St. Luke) we discover that on the night of Easter there was “a cup.”
This signifies the celebration of the Passover of Jesus. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JOHN ILLSLEY OF ‘DIRE STRAITS’ 24/7 Valencia: Tell us something about your upbringing and musical background… John Illsley of Dire Straits: I came from a regular household in the UK but fell in love with music from about 12 years old. I first picked up a guitar at 13 years old. Any tales of the early ‘Dire Straits’ when they were trying to make it? We played everywhere we could… sometimes in front of 10 people… but gradually more people came after the first album came out. What was life like in Dire Straits when you hit it big? Very busy with no time off, a lot of touring, lots of interviews and travel all over the world but a huge amount of fun playing great songs to a lot of people.
What was the chemistry that made the band so special? Mark Knopfler and I always were very close and had the same ideas about how the band should be. There were a few changes in musicians but all who joined went well with the Dire Strait sound and set up. Given that you had a winning formula…what broke the band up? Nothing broke the band up. We just decided that we had gone as far as we wanted with what we had, we all needed a break and wanted to do different things, me with art and Mark Knopfler with his own music. How did you deal with the aftermath? I did a lot of painting, had 2 more children and enjoyed being at home with my family. I did many art exhibitions and spent time with friends.
Tell us about your current band and the key members of the group. I have had 3 of the band for over 6 years now. Robbie McIntosh [Guitar,] Steve Smith [Keyboards] and Stuart Ross [Drums]. We have a girl singer called Hannah and another guitar player called Scott Mckeon. Tell us about your solo career. Do you have any musical plans for the future? I’ve made six solo CD’S and 2 live records and one DVD… plus a collaboration with an Irish singer called Greg Pearle. I will continue to make albums. Could you tell us what the public can expect at your show in Valencia? We will be playing the Dire Straits classic songs plus a few from my solo albums. We play for about 2 hours.
