CABANYAL ANY ZERO AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DOCUMENTARY DIRECTOR FRÉDÉRIQUE PRESSMANN

24/7 Valencia: What does the title “Cabanyal Year Zero” refer to? Frederique Pressmann: The title is in reference to the restoration of ‘El Cabanyal’, which refers to the time after the “war” between the local government and the residents, so to speak. People started using that phrase in 2015, after the monumental elections, referring to it as the beginning of a new era. I chose that as the title because it felt like the most relevant way of defining this moment of change in 2015. This year marked a new start to Cabanyal, one with more hope. What is your fondest memory of El Cabanyal? I lived there for a few years. I arrived in 2012 before the changes, when things were pretty politically stuck. People in the community were losing hope but at the same time there was a unique kind of freedom there, it moved me. Rent was very cheap and there were lots of community places like ‘L’Escola’, it felt like a dream neighbourhood. You can live there for very little money and be surrounded by lots of beauty and interesting people. There was a time when living there was really fun and exciting, it really felt like you were at the beginning of something. Did you feel as though you were a member of the community when you stayed in El Cabanyal? Yes, it took me almost a year before I actually started shooting. I spent that time trying to understand the people, learning the history and all of the intricacies of the place because I wanted to make it for them. So it took me a while but after a few months of shooting I felt like I had really become part of the community, it was really powerful. People saw me all the time and they even called me “the woman with the camera.” Now, when I come back to visit, everyone knows me. What does “home” mean to the residents of El Cabanyal? I think that for many people, it has a different meaning because some people grew up there and their

family is from there so they have this long-term connection with all of the history there. But there are also lots of people who moved there later on to show support for the place because of the struggle. There were people who were attracted to the kind of activism and cultural life that chose to make El Cabanyal their home; they have a very strong connection to it as well. It’s really striking to me that there are people who have been there for years who now have to move out due to rising rent. What would you say defines the identity of El Cabanyal? In a way, it has many identities. The connection to the sea is very important since it was a fisherman’s village for a long time. However, the fisherman have disappeared for at least 50 years. The notion of El Cabanyal being a rebellious place is also very grounded in their identity. It was independent for a long time, called Poblano Del Mar, it was separate from Valencia and it was really opposed to Franco during the civil war. The people here

have also held on to the Valenciano language. All of that was before the actual attacks on the place. The attacks were met with a lot of resistance for 20 years. I would say an independent spirit is deeply tied to their identity. What do you think drives the residents of El Cabanyal to fight for the preservation of their identity and cul ture? They feel very attached to their identity. During the struggle against the destruction, they were fighting for the survival of their homes and neighbourhoods. Today, a lot of the residents are confused because the attacks on their identity are not so much physical destruction as much as the gentrification process. I think that many people are at a loss at how to resist that process; these are forces that are hard to fight against. Many houses are getting renovated now and the area is getting nicer so it’s getting more expensive and people have to move out. We no longer live with the feeling that it will be destroyed but at the same time many things

are rapidly disappearing. People are confused on how to protect the neighbourhood from this process. Most of the people who have been fighting are gone and many places have closed down so there is less ground for them to fight on. That’s something that makes me pretty sad. What effect did the elections of 2015 and 2019 have on El Cabanyal? 2015 was when the former mayor Rita Barberá was evicted. That was a major change as that was the end of the destructive process. Barberá wanted to destroy half the neighbourhood and the new elected mayor said that he will not let that happen and he suppressed the urbanistic plan and put an end to all of that. There was a lot of hurt around the idea that the neighbourhood will be reconstructed and will be gone. In a way, the movement drew from the struggle and created positive change regarding the neighbourhood. There was a major change. 2015 was also the beginning of the gentrification process because before then it

was hard to buy houses there because you never knew if they would be destroyed or not. In 2019, the same government more or less has been elected and it’s gonna be a continuation, many people are critical of their choices because they are focusing their funds on the wrong things. For example, there has been very little government action for rebuilding in ground zero even though they actually own a lot of the land. Earlier this year, there was a new urban plan and it is heavily criticized in the neighbourhood because it allows High-rises and new constructions. We don’t know yet if there will be any changes or actions, it’s hard to say, we’ll see. What policies do you think should be put in place to protect the residents of El Cabanyal? The local government owns a lot of land because the previous one was buying houses to tear them down to build the avenue. What they could’ve done with this land is to rent it to groups of people who would in turn build houses as a way to renovate. Renting the land for people to rebuild houses and giving them some very long term relief on

the land. But it wasn’t done. Another policy would be to put a limit on rent increases or limit the amount of apartments being rented to tourists. Right now, many apartments are being turned into touristic apartments for a few months out of the year and that prevents yearlong residents having a place to live. There is a strong network of activist and cultural groups based in the neighbourhood and the local government should work with them. For example, the community gardens there are flourishing and it attracts many neighbours. However, this area in the new plan will be ruined for new buildings, which shows a total lack of interest for this kind of community work. This should be the opposite; the government needs to work with the community members to keep this network active. I don’t have much faith in their political vision. What do you think El Cabanyal will look like in ten years? I hope I’m wrong but I think it’s gonna be very renovated and pretty with upscale bars and restaurants in the small streets. Unfortunately, I think a lot of the people who have been living there will be gone because it’s

gonna be impossible for the poor and working-class people to afford to live there. Within 10 years, many original residents will be gone and the culture will go with them. The area has been changing fast and drastically. To compare, I grew up in the centre of Paris, a place that went through intense gentrification. Now the area has almost nothing to do with the neighbourhood I grew up in. There is still something about it that i’m connected to but it’s still very painful for me to watch this gentrification process. I think something similar will happen in El Cabanyal. The partial destruction that took place since 1998 also kept the place in a frozen bubble away from gentrification. So when the threat disappeared with the new government it was like opening the bubble and suddenly the area was exposed to this “virus” of gentrification, which came at a very high speed. I see it happening at such a high rate because in 4 years it has already changed dramatically. I arrived in 2012 and then I moved in 2013 and then i moved out in 2017. There is a long and tragic history associated with the presence of Judaism in Valencia. At its height, during the Medieval period, Valencia had one of the largest and most prominent Jewish communities in the Iberian Peninsula. Under Moorish reign, the Jews that resided here were held under restrictions and laws that forbade them from holding positions of power/ authority over any Muslim. Despite the restrictions, there was still a rather flourishing and established Jewish community in Valencia. At the time of the Christian Reconquest regarding the Moors in 1238 A.D., an estimated 2,000 Jews were living here. Jewish families made up about 9% of the population in Valencia at this

time. These families typically worked in agriculture or as craftsmen. However, many were also employed as tax collectors, civic administrators or, in one case, as the chief advisor to the King. Shortly after, in 1244, Jews were granted the whole eastern-quarter where the Santa Catalina Church stands today. This was known as the “Jew Gate”, which led to the Jewish Cemetery. Today, the former Jewish cemetery is now the location of an ‘El Corte Ingles’ shopping mall. However, the destruction of the physical evidence of Sephardic Valencia has not killed its strong influence and spirit. The influence is recognized on Calle Luis Vives, a street named after the famous Jewish scholar and humanist, Juan Luis Vives. The spirit is possibly felt the strongest

around Calle Del Mar, the site of the former Jewish Quarter. For a period within time in this once expansive quarter, the Jews had many freedoms. The community was permitted to judge lawsuits according to Jewish law and Jewish prisoners were granted to return home on Shabbat (Sabbath). However, even during these seemingly promising times, the Jewish community was still subject to restrictive policies by the Christian royalty. Such policies included: high taxes, regulations on oaths, and the order for Jews to wear a signifying “cloak.” In 1283, their freedom was further restricted as King Pedro (Peter III of Aragon) dictated that no Jew should hold any public office over Christians. In the 1370s, with rising tensions, King Peter IV of Aragon imposed that Jews were only permitted to live inside the Juderia. Violence exploded on July 9th, 1391 when a group of young Christians infiltrated the Jewish Quarter. This attack is known as the Massacre of 1391: an anti-Semitic act where Jewish homes were ransacked and robbed, Jewish women were abused in their homes, and at least 250 people were killed in the bloodshed. Many Jews accepted a forced baptism to Christianity to escape certain death while others fled the area. This historically marked the end of the once-prominent Jewish presence in Valencia. Justice

Justice was never served since some of the guilty parties came from wealthy and powerful Christian families. The Jewish community and much of the culture was essentially wiped out. Nothing from the quarter had survived from the Massacres of 1391. The three known synagogues were either destroyed or turned into churches before the 15th century, including the once esteemed synagogue which was converted into a monastery known as the Church of San Cristóbal. This tragic and senseless event was the main factor of what wiped out much of the presence of Jewish Valencia. Furthermore, Jews were no longer permitted to enter the city for longer than eight days. The times of terror were far from over as less than a century later the Spanish Inquisition began. With the inquisition came the Article © 2019 24/7 Valencia

brutal banishment of Jewish life and culture, which in effect wiped out hundreds of years of unique Sephardic culture. These were increasingly dangerous times for Jewish people. Then came the Alhambra Decree of 1492. This, also known as the Edict of Expulsion, was issued on March 31st by representatives for the Catholics of Spain. This edict prohibited the practice of Judaism. With this, over 200,000 Jews converted to Catholicism while many other thousands were expelled from Spain, forcing Jews out of the country. As feature writers David Rhead & José Marín wrote in a previous ‘24/7 Valencia’ article about history: “Despite the prejudices of the time, two Valencians of Jewish origin ended up playing a key role in renaissance Europe. One of them, Luis Vives, a true Renaissance man helped to develop the ideas that formed modern Europe. The other, Luis de Santangel, was instrumental in the discovery of America. Both triumphed as “Christians” having to pragmatically keep their true faith secret and both ended up being buried in Christian churches.”

The only option for those who wanted to preserve their religion and culture was to flee. This led to Valencia becoming a “port of embarkation” for those being pushed out and forced to relocate their homes. This edict was revoked in 1968. Around the 19th ©emlawrdesign Century, some Jews started to slowly return to Spain as synagogues were opening in Madrid. Synagogues closed again during the Spanish Civil War in the years of 1936 to 1939. Jewish life returned public in 1947. Around this time, more Jewish people returned from Europe and North Africa. Spain was neutral during World War II, which led to over 25,000 Jews coming to Spain with the promise of protection and citizenship to Eastern European Jews. Many Jews fled to Spain during this time. Spain was a place for refuge during this war and, after 1945; Barcelona became the main refugee centre. The Jewish community was officially re-established in Valencia in the 1970s and the city is now home to a thriving Jewish society centred around education, worship and community. Juan Luis Vives would be proud to see it. The Jewish

This modern community encourages all of the Jewish faith to integrate tradition and history into their lifestyles for a fulfilling and close-knit connection to each other. This Community focuses on education, activities, and festivals. Some classes and activities are offered that inform people on history, culture, and religion. For example, there are holiday celebrations, classes to prepare children for their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs and Hebrew courses. Those interested in connecting with their roots or simply learning more about the rich Jewish culture in Valencia should visit the website: https://masortiolami.org In 1996 the “Network of Jewish Spanish Quarters” was created. These are a collection of 18 cities that help promote the knowledge and tourism of Jewish areas in Spain. These municipalities have architecture, cultural, and historical Jewish heritage in them. This organization focuses on defending and celebrating Jewish culture internationally by spreading knowledge of the Jewish people and their traditions. Today, there are an estimated 50,000 Spanish Jews, with most in Madrid and Barcelona. Much of this population are Jews who have returned to Spain seeking refuge from exile in Morocco. A recent study shows that about 20% of Spanish people have Jewish descent. Just recently, in 2014,

VALENCIA WINES SIX WINES AND FIVE CHAMPAGNES RIKI WIGLEY & MARIAN DARÁS OF VÍ VID This month we look at seven wines from DO Valencia and 6 Champagnes from Taittinger. DO Valencia covers the parts of the province not covered by DO Utiel-Requena and DO Cava. Alicante and Castellon have their own controlling bodies. It is split into a number of sub-zones which cover the area from Xativa to Font de la Figuera (Clariano), Calles to Alpuente (Alto Turia), Cheste to Lliria (Valentino) and around Montserrat, Turis and Chiva (Moscatel de Valencia). In this part of the article we look at wines from some of the cooperatives. 1. Cantalares Merseguera 2018, Bodegas El Vilar, DO Valencia, (Valentino) 12%ABV. The town of Vilar Del Arzobispo is home to Bodegas El Vilar whose vineyards are in the Valentino. This wine comes from sandy and chalky soils between 500-900m above sea level. Fermented in stainless steel following maceration with the whole berry and of free run juice only. Pale yellow in colour with gold flashes. On the nose this has sweet/sour white fruit, white flowers and citrus pulp. In the mouth it is full of flavour, fragrant herbs, is fresh, balanced, distinct and invites a second taste. 2. Henri Marc Malvasia 2018, La Baronía de Turis,DO Valencia (Moscatel de Valencia) 12%ABV. Although the bodega is in the Moscatel zone, it produces a whole range of wines from other varieties and this Malvasia is an example. Handpicked grapes, whole berry maceration, fermentation in stainless steel. After this, it is aged in the bodega in bottle for a period. Bright straw colour with light steely tones. Clean. An interesting range of aromas which is typical of the variety, summer fruits, peach, spicy aromas, toasty notes, dried fruits (figs), nuts, vanilla and citrus notes. In the mouth, elegant, smooth, medium-bodied and well-balanced. 3. Juan de Juanes Vendimia Oro Chardonnay 2016, Bodega La Viña DO Valencia (Clariano) 12.5%ABV. From La Viña in Font de la Figuera. This 100% Chardonnay is fermented in Allier oak. Pale yellow colour, clean and bright. On the nose, nuts and well-integrated oaky notes. In the mouth, complex and well-structured. Well-balanced between the aromas, wood and minerals. 4. ‘Sí’ Garnacha Tintorera 2018, Bodegas Vinados Cent Piques, DO Valencia (Valentino) 14.5%ABV. This wine is from pie franco vines, en vaso, and has undergone fermentation in stainless steel. We had tasted the must after pressing then the wine from deposit before bottling and have been looking forward to the final wine being released, which it will be just as soon as the back labels are released. Deep purple in colour, medium-bodied with long, slow, fat legs.

Concentrated mature black fruits with a cover of fresh red fruits. Wild herbs, ‘garriga’, dark chocolate on an intense nose. Fresh, intense with good acidity on entry, full-bodied with black fruits, minerals from the chalky soils, a long fruity finish. This is young; it will round out with more time in bottle and will develop well. 5. Juan de Juanes Petit Verdot, 2017, Bodegas La Viña DO Valencia (Clariano) 13.5%ABV. Petit Verdot is the variety, which is part of the ‘seasoning’ mix of Bordeaux. It has settled well in the Valencian Community where it produces full-bodied dry red wines of some character. Brilliant black cherry colour with violet tones. Long legs. Red and black fruits on the nose and a little banana, with graphite, toasty notes from the crianza in American oak. Fresh on entry with body and well-integrated tannins. Long finish in which the tannins become almost sweet. 6. Mistelanova Montserrat Vino de Licor de Moscatel, Coop Montserrat, DO Valencia (Moscatel de Valencia) 15.0%ABV. This is a standard Mistela, grape juice stopped before fermentation and with natural residual sugars. This is lighter than some Mistelas and all the more pleasant for it. Old gold, slightly orange at the edge, clean and bright. Fresh and clean on the nose. Honeyed white stone fruit, yellow peach, orange flower, orange peel. In the mouth it is clean, fresh, dense, unctuous, with something herby, citric and has good acidity. Long finish.

V VALENCIA WIN Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier from Les Riceys and Montagne de Reims and 12% ABV. Rose to Strawberry in colour with fine persistent bubbles it has fresh aromas of raspberry, strawberry and cherry fruit. It is elegant in the mouth, finishing with chalky and mineral notes. Taittinger ‘Folies de la Marquetteria’, predominantly Chardonnay (55%) with 45%Pinot Noir 12%ABV. Intense yellow in colour with fine persistent bubbles. Peach and apricot jam, patisserie, brioche and vanilla on the nose. In the mouth body, fruit, with yellow peach, long powerful finish with notes from the oa k in which the free run juice is fermented.

Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne, Grands Crus Blanc de Blanc 2007. This is an exceptional Chardonnay made only in the very best years. The bubbles are light and abundant; it is pale yellow in colour. The nose is intense, abundant notes of cream, patisserie and richly aromatic. In the mouth the well-integrated bubbles lead to a tight, well-defined attack, the wine is full with a good balance, fruit, blood grapefruit. The finish is rich, long and complex with a delightful fresh aspect. Taittinger Prelude is 50% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This is made exclusively from Grands Cru vineyards and, following fermentation of the juice from the first pressing and 5 years en rima, provides a Champagne which is at once delicate and well-structured and for keeping. The balance between the minerality of the Chardonnay and expressivity of the Pinot Noir is exceptional. FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA TRICKLE TREAT GINGERBREAD CAKE FOR HALLOWEEN Once upon a time... Two little children, cast out of their home deep into the dark woods. A plan with pebbles to mark their way foiled and the plan B of breadcrumbs eaten by the birds. Lost, forlorn and hungry. Things are indeed looking ‘Grimm’ for our two waifs, but suddenly, their noses invaded by an intoxicating strange and deliciously sweet aroma; they are led to a house built of gingerbread and candy! And the sinister carnivore tale unfolds... At ‘La Ola Fresca’ we have been long using ginger to catch people in our web! Mainly, I hope, for its good witch all pervasive anti-inflammatory powers, anti-nausea and anti-oxidant qualities. The cultivation of this warming and invocative spice goes back 5000 years and is top ingredient on my list of potions. In this recipe for our ‘Treacle Treat Gingerbread Cake’ butter melts in your pot with dark brown sugar and treacle, mixed with ginger, flour, milk and egg. Scents and colours are brought together, as mesmerizing as any spell and that’s before you even eaten it!

TREACLE TREAT GINGERBREAD CAKE 225g / 1/2 lb Selfraising flour or plain flour with 1 dessert spoon baking powder mixed in 1 tablespoon dried oatmeal 2 heaped teaspoons dried ginger Pinch of salt 60g/2oz dark brown demerara sugar 85g/3oz butter

Method Heat the oven to 350F 180C. Prepare a medium size loaf tin with baking paper. Sieve all the dry ingredients together. Warm sugar, butter and treacle, without over-heating. Pour into a greased and lined baking tin and bake for about 1 ½ hours being

To create your Hansel and Gretel witch’s house, decorate the roof with candy and use piped icing sugar to draw windows and doors. If you think your captives need feeding up, slap extra butter or cheddar cheese on your slices of gingerbread. Please beware of the chicken bone trick! As for our dear Hansel and Gretel, they pushed the witch in the oven, nicked her jewels and probably the gingerbread house, mysteriously forgave their father, were never hungry again and lived happily ever after!

I researched the field, created my own brand and started ‘The Vurger’, committing myself to find the best products & flavours. I combined this with a fresh image and good music, topped off with good service…which is essential. What is your philosophy? Vegan food, which is fast food and that it is tasty for the customers. It’s a fast food restaurant that the entire world can come and enjoy our products and be surprised at our attractive flavours and with similar textures to meat! What are yout specialities? Actually, the most popular vurgers are the ‘Original con bacon vegan’ and ‘La Hawaiana’ that is with quorn and is a bit spicy. The ‘Yuba brochetas’ skewers are fantastic

and the public love them. We now have delicious ‘Beyond’ burgers imported from the U.S.A. It is the “world’s first plant-based burger that looks, cooks, and satisfies like beef without GMOs, soy, or gluten.” Tell us about your fries and drinks… We have different types of fries, the normal thinly-sliced fries with a delicious McCain flavour, rustic fries and larger fries. We also have boniato sweet potato fries, imported from the UK and USA. We were the first in Spain to have introduced these types of fries to the public. We have drinks on tap, including beer from the barrel and ecological drinks. What types of salads do you have? We have a vegan chicken flavour ‘Cesar ‘salad, a dried fruits ‘Frutos Secos’ salad and a pineapple & pink sauce ‘Piña y Salsa Rosa’ salad. Are there any desserts that you would recommend? Yes, we always have ‘Tarta Red Velvet’ cake, Carrot Cake and Black Forest ‘Selva Negra’ cake. You can also enjoy our Brownies, Waffles

VALENCIA ACID STREET ART EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DAVID DE LIMÓN 24/7 Valencia: What got you interested in Street Art and what are your objectives? David de Limón: Hola Will. The first thing about Graffiti and Street Art that caught my attention was the fact that you could present your drawings or ideas in a big way. Moreover, there are several things that are interesting to me about street art. The city is full of images, decoration in shops, advertising, signs and shop windows. All of that is visual information that we experience just by being out in the street, whether we want to be affected by it or not. I think that as a visual artist, becoming aware of this space we share on the street, it is an opportunity to change it. It is also interesting to consider urban art pieces as a free and openair gallery, the residents of the city not only enjoy these works without paying but some may never go to a museum or gallery. This is perhaps the only point of contact with art that they may have. Finally, a joining together of the points mentioned: “Change the city and make it unique”. The decoration, urban design and colours of a city are usually grey and monotonous. Thanks to urban art, each city is different with its own artists or with those who visit it. And not only is it different but it is alive with changing murals & ephemeral art concepts, which makes it easier to have a city that vibrates… rather than just constructing new buildings. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

ALL CHANGE AT THE MESTALLA Wednesday the 11th of September 2019 will live long in the memory for Valencia fans. It started off uneventful enough with business as usual, as Marcelino focused on his team selection for the forthcoming game with Barcelona. Then, by the mid-afternoon, respectable journalists had started suggesting the possibility of a major change at the helm of the club. By early evening, the likeable Asturian had been sacked and the inexperienced Albert Celades was already on the AVE from Madrid on his way to take over as manager. Within two hours of the departure of Marcelino, the official news came of the appointment of Celades. Players and supporters alike were stunned, shocked and somewhat angry at the way the outgoing manager had been treated. The Argentinian born Valencia defender Ezequiel Garay took to the social media to express his

discontent. He posted the following comments… “Whoever took this decision didn´t just drag you down; they dragged down an entire team and all the fans. And I say loud and clear: IT´S NOT FAIR.” These sentiments echoed the feelings of many of the players and the fanbase. It was an open secret that Marcelino and Peter Lim were at loggerheads, but no one expected this radical action. True, Lim had wanted Rodrigo gone from Valencia for the cash from Atlético Madrid and had also blocked the arrivals of Rafinho and Denis Suárez, against the wishes of the coach. But, whatever the reasons, the fractious relationship ended abruptly and without fanfare. The sporting director Pablo Longoria soon followed Marcelino out of the door. The stability within the club had just begun to feel solid but now, once again, it is broken and in tatters.

The players continued to express their dismay and show support for Marcelino after his dismissal by refusing to do any press conferences before and after the Barcelona game. This left the new coach to handle a plethora of questions on the current atmosphere at the club… and explain the wretched performance that had just seen Los Che slump to a 5-2 defeat in the Nou Camp. To his credit, Celades handled the situation well with diplomacy and tact. Marcelino also asked the players to support the new coach. With the Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge looming on the horizon a decent result was needed to stop the internal strife. The players maintained their stony silence with the press before the game but did their talking on the field, with a dramatic 1-0 victory in London, that came against all the odds. Ironically, Rodrigo Moreno scored the winner by latching onto a free kick from Dani Parejo, after making

a darting run to the near post that the Chelsea defence failed to cover. With Ajax easily overcoming Lille in Amsterdam in the other group match, it emphasises that the Dutch club could be a much bigger threat than the “Pensioners” when it comes to trying to secure the top spot in the group stages of the most prestigious club competition in World Football. That proved to be the case when the skilful Dutch club came to the Mestalla and gave Valencia a lesson in football and finishing. Undoubtedly, the best team Los Che have faced this season, they left Spain top of Group H after convincingly beating the home side 3-0. As early as the first minute they had a golden opportunity to take the lead. Six minutes later, Ziyech’s swirling left-foot shot to give the visitors first blood was worth the price of the entrance fee alone. Valencia did play their part in the gripping match and could have equalized if Dani Parejo had not ballooned his penalty into Row Z of the Curva Nord. The Valencia captain is developing an unhealthy habit of missing spot kicks in key Champions League matches, having done the same last season against Juventus. The Dutch side then doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark, when former Sevilla striker Quincy Promes tapped in from close range. Valencia came out after the interval and in the first five minutes of the second half had two glorious chances to reduce the deficit. However, the game was wrapped up in the 67thminute when Donny van de Beek finished off a clinical Ajax move to fire home past the advancing Cillessen.

It was a pleasure to watch the Dutch play such attractive interactive football, with neat passing interchanges along the ground that the master Johann Cruyff would have been proud of. They could well go deep in this year’s competition, even surpassing last season’s semi-final effort. On the La Liga front, Celades had his first taste of football at the Mestalla against bottom of the table Leganés, a stark contrast to the high profile away games of Barca and Chelsea. Protests against the owner before the game outside the stadium were well marshalled by the local police. Attempts to put up banners against the owner, inside the stadium, were met with immediate responses to remove them by the stewards. The game itself ended in two points being dropped by Los Che. Parejo opened the scoring with a penalty after Rodrigo had been unceremoniously tripped over by Rubén Pérez, when there seemed little danger on goal. However, the team from the Madrid barrio were soon back on terms when a fortunate ricochet fell into the path of an unmarked Oscar Rodriguez on the left hand side of the penalty area. The Spanish under

19 international made no mistake, planting his speculative shot past Jasper Cillessen from a tight angle. A frustrating second half saw the home side go close on numerous occasions but a mixture of plucky defending and unimpressive refereeing transpired, to leave the home supporters in a foul mood at the full time whistle. Getafe came to the Mestalla next. It is an understatement to say the two teams do not see eye to eye regarding their footballing philosophy. Valencia try and play “sexy football” whilst the “Minnows of Madrid” love nothing more than to turn a game into a scrappy slugfest littered with feigned injuries, referee intimidation and time-wasting rituals. On top of that, they can play a bit too when they want to. The match was a game of two halves. Doménech was a surprise choice in goal and, just like in the Copa Del Rey fixture last year against the same opponents; he was picking the ball out of the net inside a minute. This sparked the hosts into action and a brace from Maxi Gómez and a crackerjack goal from Kang-in Lee (the fifth youngest player to ever score in the league for Valencia) had the Mestalla faithful crowing at half-time.

Getafe are one club that never give up and they embrace the never- say-die spirit that was the hallmark of Wimbledon FC in the 80s. With a similar background to the London club, coming from the South of the Spanish capital, they have been punching above their weight for several years now. Unfortunately for Valencia, Getafe clawed their way back into the game and capitalised on two defensive blunders to go back home with a point, and leave Celades still awaiting his first league win. He did not have to wait long though as the following weekend Valencia eked out a solitary goal victory at the cathedral of football, San Mamés. Denis Cheryshev got the all-important goal. The change in personnel from the Getafe game seems to suggest that Celades, like Marcelino, will be an advocate of the rotation policy. Meanwhile, Levante UD keep treading water nicely and recent results have prevented them from being submerged into a relagation battle in the early stages of the season. Home wins against Villarreal and Vallodolid and further points at the Ciutat de Valencia against Eibar and Osasuna see them languishing in mid-table. However, with all three games away from home soil so far ending in defeat, manager Paco López will need to find a plan for securing more points from their travels. La Batisfera: ‘La Batisfera’ international bookstore is an open and inclusive space, aware of the place it occupies in a barrio as dynamic and multicultural as ‘El Cabanyal’ by the sea. ART IN VALENCIA EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LEGENDARY FILMMAKER AND PHOTOGRAPHER LARRY CLARK Born in 1943, Larry Clark is a living legend when it comes to urban photography and edgy filmmaking… including the comingof-age, award-winning film ‘Kids’. Directors Gus Van Sant, Francis Ford Coppolla & Martin Scorsese have cited Clark’s photography collection as a major influence in their films, including ‘Taxi Driver.’ As a teenager, Larry Clark suffered from ADD (Attention Defecit Disorder) and started shooting amphetamines at just 16 years old, “which at first calmed me” but led to long-term drug abuse. He hung out with a rowdy crowd but did study photography at Art college, which was “a goofy subject” at the time. Marginalized people, on the edge of society, would become a lifelong subject for his photography and films. Moving to New York in the early 60s as a freelancer, he was enlisted in the army and drafted to Vietnam for a period. Throughout the 60s & 70s, The Big Apple was the backdrop for his “junkie” and artistic way of life. His hard-hitting photos of fearless hustlers & speed freaks and films about skaters & hedonistic teenagers have marked Larry Clark out as a true original. about “light, shadow and feeling... that’s all you need to know as a photographer.” Regarding the controversial aspect of his work his reply is that:”I’m just trying to make people feel something and sometimes that makes them feel uncomfortable...because it’s too real.” His legendary collection of early photos is currently on show at ‘Galeria Espaivisor’ in Valencia until November. By chance, we met Larry Clark at an ‘Espaivisor’ party with paella and beer and live music. 24/7 Valencia: Larry, can you tell us something about your early life? Larry Clark: I was born and brought up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My father was a travelling salesman who was away a lot. He finally came home when I was about twelve to sell furniture. I grew up with my mom and 2 sisters & my grandmother & grandpop. Around that time, my mom got a job as a photographer of babies. From about the age of twelve, I would accompany her as she would go knock on doors in small towns in places in Oklahoma and in Kansas. Back in the 50s, the fathers of the house would be away at work so it would be the housewives that would answer the door. You would talk your way into their houses. From about the age of fifteen, I would be going on my own to the houses as a baby photographer. I would go to the house, go put a blanket over the coffee table, set the kid on the coffee table and be making pictures of babies. What does rock’n’roll mean to you? I was born at the luckiest time in the world because when I was 12 years old rock’n’roll hit (town). I

remember Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson, Jimmy Reed and everybody. I got to see them all. Jimmy Reed and everybody. I got to see them all. Did you see Elvis Presley? Yeah, I saw Elvis on his first national tour after the Ed Sullivan show. I saw him at the Tulsa fairgrounds. Oh yeah, you could see he was very special. The screaming! No one had ever heard screaming like that (from the fans). I couldn’t hear for 2 or 3 days. Elvis only played for about half an hour. It was really dirty (the performance)...super dirty... he was great. Is there an interview that you have done that stands out? I did a 2 hour interview to Australia on the telephone. It was a long, long one… the whole history. They called back an hour later to tell me that the recording hadn’t worked! So, I did it again, exactly the same. I was amazed at myself… Can you tell us about your filmwork? Iv’e painted, quite thickly and I’ve done a lot of photography. A lot of kids who I know that know my films

don’t know that I was ever a photographer. My first film came out in 1994. No one was going to give a junkie money to make a movie. I cleaned up; I got married and had kids, the whole deal. I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller. Because of my ‘Tulsa’ book and other books, I was given the money to make the movie ‘Kids’. You directed the true story film ‘Bully. It is about a High School Bully who was killed by a group of misguided school friends. It is one of my favourite films. A Pulitzer prize critic called the film “a masterpiece.” Can you tell us more about it? It’s a great film. We had as many people from real life in the film as possible. The actual judge who made the conviction was in the film as were the actual cops who busted the killers! It was out in the middle of nowhere so they didn’t mind about being judged for being in the film. I guess their attitude was that “it’s only Hollywood in Florida... so who the fuck knows!” (Laughs). Where the killing happened was a brand new place with one storey buildings with nothing going on. Kids would hang out at ‘Hardee’s’ or somewhere like that, you know. We used the original ‘Pizza Hut’ where they plotted the murder too. Hollywood in Florida was a place that I just couldn’t imagine living there... because there was zero history. With the killing, there was peer pressure because some of the kids didn’t even know him (the bully Bobby Kent). It’s a great story. Some of those involved are still in prison, as far as I know. Steve Gainer was the director of photography. He was great. He came from music videos…so he was really, really fast. He knew that you had to make the day. days. Were just running like crazy from location to location. It was old school. You wouldn’t believe how fast we had to shoot the film. Where we filmed the killing of Bobby Kent was the exact same place it happened. It was an isolated place, outside of town, where kids would go to drink beer and stuff like that. I was working my ass off, we were working hard. My girlfriend would come to the set but...was not so helpful because I had no time. I was sleeping 3 or 4 hours a night. It was a fun one to do but really, really hard. It was quite an experience. Can you tell us about your photography collection now showing at ‘Espaivisor’ in Valencia? It’s the early work from 1962- 1971. When I was about eighteen I started photographing my friends for 10 years and that’s what ‘Tulsa’ was plus about 3 other photos from outside that collection. Was the shooting up that is depicted in the pictures real?

Yes, it was real. We were like pioneers. I originally wanted to be a writer, it’s just that I happened to always have a camera with me. So, that was my way of telling a story. Was it an urban, punk way of life? I came to New York in 1961 when I left school. It was earlier than the Warhol Factory days. I was never a hippy but we would grow our hair to be able to get drugs from the hippies when they came along. How do you find Valencia? I’ve been to so many places that I don’t remember half of them. I’ve been to Spain about 5 or 6 times… for films and stuff. I feel connected to it. The light is beautiful here. I haven’t had the time to photograph much yet. We went to that place where the sea is all around you (Oceanogràfic) yesterday…with the ocean all around you and all those buildings (The City of Arts & Sciences)…that’s big! “The blues speaks about real situations that are common to all people” EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE “GODFATHER OF THE BRITISH BLUES” ON HIS 85th ANNIVERSARY TOUR John Mayall (OBE) is a musical legend on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Macclesfield in 1933 he was married with children, an art designer and part-time musician in the 1950s. By the early 1960s, the live blues scene was starting to grow in Britain. Catalyst Alexis Korner persuaded Mayall to move down to London, which enabled John to turn his music into a fulltime job from 1963 onwards as a singer, composer, guitarist, keyboardist and harmonica player. He has been touring ever since. A natural mentor & leader, musicians who went on to play in Cream, Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones were all formed in Mayall’s ‘Bluesbreakers’ band. John Mayall has recorded almost 70 studio and live albums over the years. His current band will be touring Spain in October to promote his latest album, ‘Nobody Told Me.’ 24/7 Valencia: Did it have any effect on you living through both the beatnik scene of the 50s and the hippie scene of the late 60s/early 70s? John Mayall: I didn’t bother with it. I kept apart from it. I was doing my own thing and just staying true to myself. What did you learn from doing military service in England & South Korea? For my generation, it was obligatory to do your military service for your country. Looking back, I suppose it did have some sort of meaning. At the time, you just put up with it and looked forward to it all ending and going back to being a civilian.

What first got you interested in music? It was my father’s hobby. He had a great jazz collection of 78s. I got interested in jazz and blues way before I was posted abroad. Could you describe the British Blues scene in the 1960s? It was really a bit rough’n’tumble. Trad jazz had been the mainstay for the previous 10 years and the youth of the day were ready for something different. What are your memories of Eric Clapton? Eric was way ahead at that time. He had really learned the history of the blues. What do you remember about Peter Green? Peter went full-tilt into the blues. He wasn’t really into jazz. He was a really good songwriter with a unique style of guitar playing. How about Mick Taylor? Mick had more of a jazz influence in his playing. What did Gary Moore bring to the music?

Gary did a great job in taking good advantage of his blues chops. How does living in Los Angeles compare to England? I have lived in America for so long now that it is difficult to remember what it was like to live in Britain. With time, you find where you want to live and it is not necessarily where you are from. I moved to California because of the climate and the way of life…

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JOHN MAYALL What have you learnt most from touring? It’s what I do for a living. I spend about a third of the year on the road. I really enjoy communicating with audiences all over the world. It’s a great adventure being in a group. Why is the blues so universal as a genre of music? It speaks about real situations that are common to all people. Did losing many of your possessions in a house fire change your perspective about things? Not at all. Obviously, it’s sad to lose so many of your possessions. If you lose any collection of things, you just have to build it up again and look to the future. What can the public expect with your show in Valencia? We do a different show every night. I suppose I have a fairly extensive choice of material to choose from. So, it’s a delight to compose a different set-list for each

particular gig. We enjoy sharing that spontaneity as a band with the public at our shows. Can you tell us something about your latest album, ‘Nobody Told Me’ ? Whenever I do an album, I’m looking for a good energy and also if the subject matter & words link the songs. Regarding the tracks on the album...What Have I Done Wrong attracted me to its rhythm. Evil and Here to Stay just has something about it…it’s usually the rhythm I go for. The Moon is Full is memorable for its beat and Distant Lonesome Train reminds me of the Old West. It’s So Tough is a 12-bar blues commentary about just the way that things are.Nobody Told Me is a reflection on life & its surprises. You just never know what is around the corner… and how things are going to turn out! Interview by Will McCarthy
