Maya Henry The World's Luckiest Teenager By W.A. Muller | Photos by Antoine Verglas
G
lam girl Maya Henry gained overnight celeb status and tens of thousands of Instagram followers after her $6M Quinceañera party, featuring live performances by Pitbull and Nick Jonas, went viral earlier this year.
Overnight, the world took notice. Dubbed, “The World’s Luckiest Teenager” Maya has since made the rounds on some of the biggest entertainment stages- from Inside Edition to the Steve Harvey Show. She has appeared in specials for Pro7 in Germany and Australia’s Sunrise Morning Show and will star in an upcoming episode of the U.K.’s “Rich Kids of Instagram.” She has been photographed by highfashion photographers Vincent Peters and Antione Verglas and has been featured in fashion spreads for major publications.
Most recently, Maya attended the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Awards along with the likes of Beyoncé, Michael Kors, Heidi Klum and Naomi Campbell. The young fashionista looked radiant in a full-length semi-sheer Etro gown with long sleeves and a floral pattern, matched with jewels by David Webb. Maya also sported a trendy triple braid hairstyle by expert hair stylist Laura Polko and makeup by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta. Allure.com called Maya’s CFDA look one of their “Favorite Beauty Looks” from the award show. Jet-setting from Hillary Clinton fundraisers and photo shoots in NYC to Coachella and dinner at George Clooney’s house in L.A. is a typical weekend for this trendsetting teen. Viva LA has called Maya “the epitome of what it means to be a young and rich Latino in today’s world.” August 2016 | 33

Have you always been an influencer; someone that people get inspired by? In my teens I started to realize I was becoming an influencer. As a younger girl I would study and make good grades, I would play tennis and compete, and I was into fashion and had my own style. I then started Maya’s Corner in an effort to help less fortunate families and kids with school supplies. I realize how important it is to be a positive influence and a good role model to young kids and I hope to inspire others. I hope to become a more significant influencer in our world as time goes on. You recently created your own hashtag #teensforhillary to support Hillary Clinton’s political campaign. How important do you think it is for young people to take a stand in politics, even before they are able to vote? I do support Hillary Clinton even though I am too young to vote. I think it is very important for young people to know what is going on in the world and to care about their future. I feel that as a young woman it is important to have leaders that understand and care about women’s issues and rights. I am also Latina and I have a grandmother that came from Mexico not knowing any English. I think that Hillary Clinton wants everyone to have opportunities in this country. At what point in your life did you discover your interest in philanthropy and activism? I discovered my interest in philanthropy and activism when I was very little at my father’s annual turkey giveaway. I went every year to his giveaway and would see the lines of people wrapped around the streets waiting for a turkey. Seeing all the children in the lines made me understand what a blessed life I have and that I am very fortunate. I created Maya’s Kids Corner at all of my father’s events so that all the children were entertained and could have fun. Maya’s Corner came from that and has since evolved. I am now helping kids with school supplies. Education is the key to all of our futures and this assistance I hope will nurture the minds of children. You are an avid and competitive tennis player. How did you first get involved in tennis? Are there any other sports that you like to practice? My dad started my brother in tennis. He was very good, so I was a little intimidated to start playing but I did it anyway. I doubted myself early on but tried hard and practiced. I entered a small tournament and won! This taught me to work hard and practice and that sticking with something pays off. Now I train in tennis several hours a day and I play at a high competitive level. I really enjoy working out! I also love boxing and Pilates. You recently spent some time in the Hamptons. What do you like most about the Hamptons? The Hamptons were so much fun! I like how it reminds me of NYC, but a beach version. The restaurants were great and there were so many different workout places that I tried. I really enjoyed eating at Kozu and Tutto il Giorno in Southampton and the classes at Physique 57 in Bridgehampton were great. August 2016 | 35

25A You attended the 2016 CFDA Awards together with Jonathan Cheban and Coco Rocha. What was your favorite part about the awards? I really enjoyed hanging out with Jonathan, Coco and Dwayne Wade. They were so nice and funny. My favorite part of the awards was the red carpet and seeing all the different outfits that people were wearing.
Favorite vacation spot? Harbour island, Bahamas, where we rented a villa on the beach. We visit regularly and I love this place because it is so relaxing and our family gets to spend quality time together. The beach is amazing with turquoise water and the sand is light pink. I enjoy seeing the same locals when we visit because they are so friendly and nice. I also get to snorkel with my dad, which is a special time for me.
You were thrown a magnificent Quinceañera earlier this year with guest appearances from world-renowned artists Pitbull and Nick Jonas. Tell us about the most unforgettable moment at the party? Not to brag but my Quinceañera was one of the best parties ever! Nick Jonas was amazing and he is such a nice and friendly guy. Pitbull was so much fun and so energetic. He had everyone dancing and jumping up and down. My event planner was David Monn from New York. He made everything happen and he had the venue built for my party. It took a month to get the venue built and he had 150 people helping him. It is hard to describe how amazing the venue is unless you were there. When we walked in we were amazed even though we knew what to expect. There was a garden room with a live fountain, cherry blossom trees, grass flooring and flowers everywhere. Then the curtains opened to a huge party room that had lounge-style seating, butterflies hanging from the ceiling, huge flowers everywhere, a dance floor in the middle, and an amazing stage set up. My favorite part though was the father/daughter dance. I am very close to my dad and he does a lot for me!
What song do you listen to on repeat? Bad Decisions by Ariana Grande. I am a huge fan of Ariana Grande because she is so nice to her fans and this particular song is great.
You have Mexican heritage on your mother’s side. What role does that play in your life and family traditions? I am an American Mexican! My mother and grandmother’s cultural influence has taught me not only a language, but the spirit of life, family, loyalty, hard work and respect for yourself and others. My grandmother is the earth beneath my feet, my mother is the foundation of my life. Without them I would not be the young woman that I am.
Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years I would like to be modeling and attending an Ivy League college or go to Georgetown and become a human rights/ international lawyer. If you could meet anyone in the world, whom do you want to meet? The world is full of amazing people. I have had the opportunity to meet many of the people that I admire, like Hillary Clinton, Amal Clooney and Anna Wintour. The person I would like to meet that I haven’t already met would be Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey is a woman that has risen to the top in spite of every possible obstacle in her way. I would love to know what inspired her and still inspires her today. Describe your style. Who has been your greatest style influence? My style varies. I dress for comfort most of the time. My look is either very girly, tomboyish or boho. My style depends on my mood that day. I love dresses and heels and I do like to steal my brother’s bomber jackets or shirts. I have been stealing his clothes since I was a toddler. Do you have any favorite quotes? “When life puts you in a tough situation, don’t say why me?...say try me!!”
Tell us something that most people do not know about you. Most people do not know that I have a wicked sense of humor. I also love to dance! I wish I could have been a dancer.
“You can’t have a million-dollar dream with a minimum-wage work ethic!”
What is your favorite restaurant in New York? Favorite restaurant is Per Se because the food is amazing and they can accommodate the menu to your liking and the service is great. My favorite dish would be the salmon cones and the potato croquettes.
Do you have or have you ever had any pets? I have four dogs: Three poodles and one mutt. All but one are rescue dogs. I am very involved with animal shelters and I donate to Mercy for Animals.

THE ITALIAN DINING TRILOGY Il Gattopardo, The Leopard At Des Artistes, And Mozzarella & Vino
T
By Peter Elston
he Godfather is considered by many to be the greatest Italian trilogy of all time. Over the last few years, there’s only one trilogy that stands above the rest; Il Gattopardo, The Leopard At Des Artistes, and Mozzarella & Vino. The trilogy of restaurants sets a new standard in fine Italian dining, with the only debate being whose everyone’s favorite of the three. One, Two or all three are sure to satiate your appetite with their delectable dishes. The Il Gattopardo family of restaurants is owned by husband-and-wife team of Gianfranco and Paula Bolla Sorrentino, and Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo. Originally from Naples, Italy, Gianfranco Sorrentino carries over 40 years of experience in restaurant management, some of these include Quisitana Hotel in Capri, Dorchester Hotel in London, Four Seasons Hotel in Tokyo, Bice restaurant in New York, Sette MoMA restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art of New York, and Union Bar & Grill in Great Barrington, MA. In September 2001 he opened Il Gattopardo, just across the street from MoMA, along with his wife Paula Bolla-Sorrentino, and his talented Executive Chef Vito Gnazzo. Most recently the Sorrentinos embraced in one of the most rewarding journeys of their careers, the re-birth of the New York landmarked des Artistes restaurant. 44 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
IL GATTOPARDO Fine dining icon Il Gattopardo opened in 2001, and still attracts a loyal clientele who come for both the authentic southern Italian cuisine and the warm, Italian hospitality. Il Gattopardo is located in the historically landmarked Rockefeller Townhouses at 13-15 West 54th Street. Aside from the sleek, modern main dining room, the restaurant also boasts a beautiful, lushly-planted 6-story Atrium, in which weekend brunch is served (with live jazz on Saturdays), and a wide range of private events are held. Il Gattopardo serves traditional Southern Italian comfort food that has been adapted for the contemporary palate without compromising the authenticity of the cuisine, which became a must to its loyal upscale New Yorker clientele. Il Gattopardo presented their new Summer menu just in time for the warmer weather. An exceptional array of new dishes join the longtime crowd favorites at the midtown restaurant, including delectable appetizers, pastas, and entrees. 212.246.0412, or ilgattopardonyc.com.
THE LEOPARD AT DES ARTISTES Five years ago, in the historically landmarked Hotel des Artistes, on a beautiful, tree-lined block between Central Park and Lincoln Center, Gianfranco Sorrentino and his wife Paula Bolla Sorrentino, along with Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo, opened The Leopard at des Artistes. The opening included a floor-to-ceiling renovation of the existing space, and a complete restoration of the original, famed Howard Chandler Christy murals that adorn its walls. The Leopard at des Artistes, located in the historically landmarked Hotel des Artistes at 1 West 67th Street, boasts a diverse menu that finds its roots in the area once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies of the mid-1800s, and the culinary traditions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course, Sicily. The menu also features dishes traditionally found in regions outside of southern Italy, such as Lazio and Umbria.
MOZZARELLA & VINO Mozzarella & Vino, located at the former Il Gattopardo space, at 33 west 54th Street - as you may know, Il Gattopardo moved to the new location, on the same block at number 13 West. Their talented Chef Vito Gnazzo is responsible for the mouthwatering menu that reflects the simplicity of authentic Italian ingredients, with a heavy emphasis on the Mozzarella di bufala Campana, Italian cheeses and affettati. Based mostly on classic Italian antipasti, such as arancini, panzarotti, and mozzarella rolls, they also serve a wonderful selection of panini , soups, salads, and of course mozzarella on all shapes and combinations ‌ even on desserts. Their enoteca style bar focuses on showcasing rather smaller family estates and independent Italian winemakers. They proudly share beloved wines, definitely not mainstream, wines that translates history, quality and good value. A variety of by the glass is offered, as well as by the bottle. Their selection greatly varies due to constant new discoveries.

Bagatelle French Flair in Manhattan
E
By Sara Barry
steemed French restaurant Bagatelle New York invites you to the Meatpacking District to bask in European-style grandeur. Located in the former Collective space at One Little West 12th Street, Bagatelle invigorates the Meatpacking District with French cuisine, a lively atmosphere and European flair. Bagatelle’s cuisine is a marriage of contemporary and traditional French cuisine, with dishes drawing inspiration from the south of France that are executed exquisitely. Bagatelle is adorned with a new outdoor terrace, reminiscent of one at a Parisian cafe. An intimate dining room with a full bar awaits you as you walk through the doors. Modern art, in an almost abstract-expressionist style, adorns some of the sleek white walls, which are detailed with fine molding. The decor is sophisticated, yet has a hidden lightheartedness evident in the choice of art. Bagatelle is well-known for its over-the-top, energetic brunch party, featuring thundering music courtesy of a DJ, champagne, even people dancing on chairs. This is what results when classy meets hip. Be sure to reserve a table before heading over, because Bagatelle, restaurant by day, club by night, is typically bustling with people. For appetizers, delight in fruit of the sea and try the Maine Diver Scallops or the Ahi Tuna Tartare with Avocado Salad. Or, try the ceviche-like Crab Salad, a meal sure to be memorable. As an entrée, the Châteaubriand Pour Deux is a crowd favorite, topped with truffle potato purée, and a red wine and peppercorn sauce. Try the Pizza à la Truffle Noire, topped with black truffles, or the Côte de Bœuf, a perfectly cooked bone-in ribeye. The chef’s unique creations, such as Crab
46 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
Salad with Grapefruit and Fennel or a Poulet Truffle Pour Deux with Yukon gold potatoes, shallots and button mushrooms, are also sure to impress. Bagatelle also shines in the dessert arena; try a Pavlova Fraises et Vanille, an Italian meringue crisp with strawberry marmalade and sauce and vanilla Chantilly or a Chouchou Caramel, caramelized hazelnut mini choux puff with milk chocolate caramel sauce, among other great options. The Huge Sundae can be shared by ten people and is equipped with sparklers, making it a show of its own. The restaurant offers a one-thousand-dollar ice cream sundae, the Mauboussin Mega Sundae, featuring scoops of vanilla ice cream and Dom Perignon Rose sorbet topped with chocolate truffles, macarons, whipped cream, chocolate vodka sauce and gilded brownies, with a sprinkle of gold leaf. If you are in search of a luxury dessert, this is the one. Bagatelle’s chefs have grown up in Normandy, Alsace and Brittany, and expertly and creatively craft cuisine that finds its roots in two continents. Bagatelle New York’s kitchen is led by acclaimed Chef Nicolas Frezal who brings his exciting creations to the New York dining scene. Bagatelle New York’s union of finely prepared French cuisine and a lively club-like atmosphere is what makes the New York dining scene an adventure. 1 Little West 12th Street New York, NY 10014 212.488.2110 bagatellenyc.com

By Christopher A. Pape
ocated in the heart of lower Manhattan, Da Claudio brings seasonal Italian cuisine and a friendly modern aesthetic to Nassau/Ann Street, one of New York City’s oldest and historic streets. Owners Linda and Claudio Marini are proud of this cozy Italian dining spot that is nestled comfortably within the Financial District. Situated in a sleek and contemporary space, the 100-seat restaurant has a warm and friendly atmosphere with its open kitchen and handsome bar serving wine, beer and cocktails. This light and airy dining spot is decorated with artwork representative of both the past and present. Salvaged artifacts from Linda and Claudio’s former restaurant, Barbarini, destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, are mounted on the walls–however, its legacy continues at Da Claudio. Da Claudio offers a specialty Italian menu with a modern and creative twist. The seasonal menu is always changing with new and exciting dining options for guests to enjoy. Using only the freshest and finest imported ingredients, all pasta, sauces, stocks and desserts are made in-house with each dish unique in flavor. Take-out, delivery and catering are also available for guests to treat themselves to some of these gourmet dishes outside of the restaurant. Da Claudio welcomes local employees and residents to enjoy refreshing cocktails and small plates after their long workday. Sip on a glass of Fattoria Sardi Rosato, a pale & dry, lightly herbaceous, raspberry and melon Italian Rosé as you indulge in small plates of Ciccetti and Crostini. Or enjoy one of Da Claudio’s seasonal cocktails; might we suggest the Amarcord– made with Tanqueray gin, peach puree, fresh lemon juice, St. Germaine and agave.

The menu features both lunch and dinner, beginning with classic antipasti. Start the antipasti adventure with the Polpo, grilled octopus with herbed sautéed potatoes and taggiasca olive tapenade, tender and rich in flavor. Share an Italian-style salad, the Insalata Verde del Mercato, paired with pickled beets and squash, radish, pear, cabernet vinegar and topped with pumpkin seeds–a perfect light beginning before the main course. At Da Claudio the cuisine is tailored to dining preferences with its extensive variety of entrées to choose from. Try the Linguine Nere House, a perfect seafood and pasta combination made with homemade black linguine and prawns combined in a spicy tomato sauce. The Fettucine Casalinghe al Pesto is a luscious house-made fettucine with pesto and cherry tomatoes–a popular and authentic Italian recipe. For meat lovers, enjoy a mouthwatering Bistecca Tagliata, a sliced sirloin steak with a Cabernet vinegar reduction accompanied with herbed sautéed potatoes. Artfully prepared, the Stinco di Maiale Pork Shank is a succulent and flavorful dining option paired harmoniously with Fuji apple and cipollini agrodolce. Da Claudio is a fitting addition to Downtown with its heritage of traditional house-made Italian delights, carefully pairing delectable entrees with refreshing wine and cocktails while serving guests in a contemporary setting. 21 Ann St NY, NY 10038 212.285.2668 daclaudionyc.com

Blue Fin A Temple of Fresh Fish
G
By Georgette Malitsis
reeting the street with its sleek glass design, Blue Fin brings the deep sea to the heart of Manhattan. Blue Fin is designed to maintain a modern New York City feel while bringing Zen to your taste buds. Located inside of New York City’s world-class hotel, the W Times Square, one can dive into the varieties of fresh seafood. Seeking a pre- or post-theater dining experience? You may find comfort trying their sushi and raw offerings or perhaps the lounge area may be suited to satisfy your dining pleasure. At Blue Fin, the menu divides the ocean bounty between cooked fish and raw. In the raw-fish portion of the menu are the notable Shellfish Towers showcasing a tasteful variety of oysters, clams, crab and lobster. Priced by size and defined by luxury, you may choose between “balcony,” “mezzanine” and “orchestra” for an all-encompassing seafood experience. For sushi lovers, you will find yourself enticed by the Dressed Sushi; each piece carefully crafted with tasteful accompaniments tailored to the particular fish ordered. We enjoyed the Eel dressed with sweet grilled pineapple seasoned with spicy gochujang (serrano chili); both flavors harmonious with every bite. On the cooked side, we recommend the Charred Tender Spanish Octopus topped with spiced Romesco sauce, and seasoned with smoked paprika (essential for Spanish cooking) for a distinct sweet and smoky taste accompanied by olive-oil potatoes. If you are looking for a quick bite, may we suggest the mouth-watering Lobster Mac & Cheese. A creamy combination of bacon, truffle and English peas tied together with melted Italian Fontina.
50 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
For dinner, we found that the most notable entrée to be the Glazed Chilean Sea Bass accompanied by sesame roasted eggplant, crispy rice and lemongrass soy. A dish full of flavor– definitely to be revisited. To grasp the theme of Blue Fin you will find yourself fulfilled by the Thai Seafood Hotpot. Composed of lobster, shrimp, calamari, littlenecks and scallops in a kaffir lime broth, it is a dish so satisfying that you may not have room for dessert. However, the exceptional flavors of homemade ice cream are a must. Indulge yourself with a cold treat that will be a fitting end to your dining experience. Our personal favorite was the blueberry cheesecake-flavored ice cream. In a hurry to catch the matinee? Be on your way with a one of Blue Fin’s “Theatre Treats to Go.”—a choice of sweet or salty treats, such as warm chocolate chip cookies or caramel popcorn. Blue Fin offers an extensive variety of dishes from the ocean. From the depths of the Mediterranean, to the Italian Riviera all the way to the shallow waters of Thailand, lose yourself among the delicious and exotic flavors that are brought to the table. Blue Fin is a modern seafood restaurant, bringing you a quiet sophisticated dining experience among the action in Times Square. W Times Square,1567 Broadway NY, NY 10036 212.918.1400 bluefinnyc.com

Dante NYC Classic Italian in the Village
A
By Georgette Malitsis
storied Greenwich Village restaurant, Caffe Dante (now known as Dante NYC), has proudly served New Yorkers for over 100 years. It continues to serve its loyal patrons with a newly refined menu offering full meals and an extensive variety of cocktails. Currently, the historic restaurant is under new Australian ownership, yet the restaurant’s team leader, Linden Pride, has successfully preserved the Italian culture and hospitality of the original Caffe Dante.
If you are seeking true Italian tradition then enjoy the Maitake and Oyster Mushroom Lasagna crafted with ricotta and Parmigiano cheeses. Find yourself comfortably satisfied with the Pappardelle pasta combined with veal shoulder, ragu, asparagus and spiced with herbs. Stop by any day during the week from 4pm to 7pm for Dante NYC Negroni Sessions, with notable cocktails such as the Negroni or Negrogi Frappe, using careful combinations of ingredients to complement your dinner.
The space is decorated with classic European detailing such as an exposed brick wall, tin ceiling and cream leather banquets. The checkered tile flooring and charred oak bar conserve the old feeling of the 100-year-old restaurant. Regulars will be pleased to see photographs of past Caffe Dante patrons lined up against the walls, reassuring its customers that the memory of the restaurant forever remains.
If you’ve had an early start to your day, head to Dante NYC for a decadent brunch. Choose from a selection of breakfast options that offer an AmericanItalian twist, such as the Pumpernickel French Toast with ricotta, cinnamon, agave and caramelized banana. A Green Bowl of Quinoa is perfect for a light brunch, with spring peas, green beans, avocado, arugula and soft poached egg–add pancetta (Italian bacon) to complete your meal.
The menu features classic Italian dishes with an emphasis on homemade pastas. Since the reopening there have been several New York classic ingredients added to the menu as well. The menu is sectioned by crudos, appetizers, sourdough flatbread and large delectable entrees. Dante NYC also offers an assortment of classic desserts and pastries to satisfy your sweet tooth.
An ideal addition to your brunch is freshly baked artisan bread such as the house-made banana bread, served toasted with ricotta and honey. If you are craving something really sweet then there are daily homemade treats including pastries and gelato with flavors such as tiramisu, stracciatella and pistachio, or perhaps a lemon sorbet to cleanse the palette.
Start off with the Beef Tartar, decorated with watercress, pickled mustard seeds and crispy quinoa accompanied with sourdough bread. If you don’t care for raw meat, then treat yourself to one of Dante NYC’s warm Sourdough Flatbreads, such as the Verde with spicy lamb sausage, mozzarella and arugula.

DIRTYBURGER Inventive American Cuisine
B
By Sara Barry
rought to you by Chef Ian Russo, aka The Dirty Chef, Dirtyburger is located in Plainview, showcasing a unique type of American cuisine. Don’t let its name fool you—Dirtyburger uses the freshest ingredients possible, and boasts the use of all-natural, hormone and additive-free Angus beef. Dirty cooking, the combination of the Chef’s own enhanced spice blend with a caramelizing agent amplifies taste to an entirely new level and caters to every palate under the sun. Diners can order Dirty-style fries, wings, mac and cheese, even ice cream.
The Dirty Lamb Burger is mouthwatering, almost like a glorified gyro; it includes an arugula cucumber mix and signature “Dirtziki” sauce. Pescetarian-friendly options include the Dirty Salmon, topped with avocado and wasabi mayo, or the Dirty Ahi, with a lightly seared sushi-grade Ahi Tuna Steak. Order your favorite cocktail from the full bar and enjoy the marriage of a Dirty Margarita and Dirty Burger. The Dirty Entrées are also a crowd favorite; choose from ribs, steaks or a Chef’s barley bowl where you can choose your protein.
When you first step into Dirtyburger, you are welcomed by an open dining area featuring wood-topped tables paired with steel chairs and black leather banquettes. Red, a signature color of Dirtyburger's, adorns some walls accented with graffiti. One side of the dining room is lined by a reclaimed wood wall, embellished with a few works of pop art. The dining area has a clear view of the kitchen, and has a television for live sports. The restaurant’s simple yet contemporary vibe pairs nicely with its modern spin on the burger.
Dirtyburger entered the world when Chef Russo returned to New York after spending time traveling across the globe. In New York City’s Upper East Side, he opened IAN, his eponymous restaurant, where his signature Dirty Drunken Rib-eye, New York Magazine’s “Best Steak in the City,” was created. Russo is classically trained and has cooked in international kitchens, from the world-famous kitchen of Michel Guérard at Eugénie-les-Bains to Hawaiian fusion cuisine at the renowned Roy’s. After perfecting his dirty cooking style, he launched Dirtyburger, and has shared his signature dishes with Long Island ever since.
The amount of passion that Russo injects into his food is obvious after taking a bite. Every morsel is flavorful, as rave reviews concur. While the original Dirtyburger is intended to be eaten as-is, it is fully customizable, along with over 30 other menu items. Vegetarian? Try the Dirty Veggie, a savory veggie burger served with curry mayo, avocado and lemon vinaigrette over mixed greens on a brioche bun. Or, try the Serious Dirty Veggie, which adds a Dirty Portobello cap married in Dirty and honey. Delight in the Tofu Burger, caramelized with honey on a brioche bun, with spicy mayo, cucumber, greens and avocado. 56 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

I
t’s not a summer if there isn’t at least one all-out clam or lobster bake. It begins with the fruits of the sea and extends further, which includes the décor and numerous menu items. I love to set up one long table - what some refer to as communal dining - and use the bright colored menu items to light up the table. Corn on the cob, lobster, mussels, clams, all present beautifully on a table covered with a neutral colored cloth flanked by benches. When your guests enter, they are instinctively drawn to sit together and indulge in an array of summer flavors.
If it is in fact August, seafood and local catch is in its prime season. First set your table. Arrange two plates per guest to accommodate the size of lobster and provide a two-pronged lobster fork, a nutcracker, a ramekin for individual butter for dipping and a lemon wrapped in cheesecloth for seasoning. Set up plenty of decorative buckets and bowls on the table so the guests can discard the shells and corn cobs easily. Lastly, a wet napkin is a perfectly convenient accent – make sure it is within reach on the table. In addition to corn, a sliced tomato alternating with fresh mozzarella fits in perfectly with the summer theme. Offering your guests more than one vegetable is key and simple during the summer months. Organic produce is available at most of the farm stands. Fresh mussels are inexpensive and can be prepared in a variety of sauces. For a traditional clambake, I prefer a sauce of tomato, garlic, white wine, and fresh herbs. There are also plenty of indigenous oysters out east and they’re ready for shucking. Consider a sidebar with a few different types of oysters set on a bed of ice, along with the requisite horseradish, Tabasco, and fresh lemon wedges. You can hire and onsite shucker if you like as oysters need to be eaten shortly after they’re opened, otherwise keep the unopened oysters on a bed of ice and start shucking just before your guests arrive.
Lobster is traditionally steamed, but for cooking on the grill, wrap the lobster in aluminum foil and create a pouch to hold the lobster. Before you close up the foil, add seasonings like lemon, dry white wine, sea salt and pepper. Close the pouch and cook on the grill on high heat for 20 minutes. In addition, you could include potatoes and corn with a few pats of butter in the foil so as to provide a clambake-in-a-pouch. It’s an alternative way of serving, otherwise you can place all the elements of the clambake in serving dishes on the table. If you want to serve up something a little less expensive, try substituting crawfish for lobster. The truth is if you placed a Maine lobster next to a crawfish the only major difference people would notice is the size. In fact, they look like baby lobsters and are so close in taste. For a festive enhancement of the beverages, beer pairings would certainly punch up your seafood feast. Lobster or its like should be served with white wine only. The tannin in red wine and the iodine in the lobster react unfavorably, giving the lobster a metallic taste. Stick with a big fruity Chardonnay. The saltiness of the seafood combines beautifully with it.

The kitchen garden is located on the grounds of the hotel where aromatic herbs such as basil and rosemary are grown in abundance alongside organic vegetables. Although strictly committed to local products, the chef’s worldly culinary expertise brings creative interpretations to the table. Guests may fully personalize their dining experience as far as picking out their own ingredients for their salads and mouthwatering pasta sauces. The outdoor wellness center is the perfect spot for guests to find inner peace and balance. armoniously nestled in a private park, the Grand Hotel Palazzo della Fonte is a royal country manor enclosed by thousands of trees, situated in the town of Fiuggi, Italy. The community is famous for its Acqua di Fiuggi (Fiuggi water) that flows from Italy’s natural springs and mountains–well known for its natural healing properties. The Palazzo is in a perfect setting amid its beautiful surrounding landscape, offering five-star luxury accommodations for over one hundred years. After several years of consolidating its reputation as one of the most luxurious and royal residences, the Palazzo was recognized by the Italian Ministry of Heritage and Culture as a palace worthy of protection and conservation. A city so abundant with history that today it is known as “the Eternal City.” The capital of Italy and home to the Vatican, Rome is the center of an ancient empire with a vast historical focus. Palazzo Scanderbeg's central location makes it the perfect place to explore the city. It is only a two-minute walk from the world-famous Trevi Fountain, the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains 74 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
in the world. Other sites within walking distance include Trajan’s Market, a large complex of ruins located on the opposite end of the Colosseum. The Piazza Venezia, Vittorio Emanuele Monument and the Pantheon are also locations to see, not too far from the Palazzo. Just like the rest of Rome, the Palazzo Scanderbeg carries rich history. Originally built in 1466, the Palazzo has undergone changes and various uses over several centuries and recently was the home of the Italian Pasta Museum. The palace takes its name from the Albanian hero and Prince, George Castriota, known as Scanderbeg, who commissioned it in the 15th century. Scanderbeg is considered instrumental in building an alliance against Ottoman expansion and defeating Ottoman attacks in defense of Christianity–
for this he was proclaimed “Difensor Fidei” (Defender of the Faith). As Albania’s greatest national hero, his deeds inspired Vivaldi, who composed Scanderbeg the opera in 1718. Today, his portrait remains on display for all to honor his memory. A tranquil oasis in the center of Rome, the Palazzo is surrounded by terraces overlooking the Eternal City. The four-story Palazzo is built around a courtyard, decorated with a beautiful flowing water fountain. Location is the selling point of the lodging – it is a perfect resting spot after a long day of shopping, dining and exploring. The Palazzo features original artifacts as well as reclaimed wood floorboards from Venice. All bedrooms ensure the comforts of home with free Wi-Fi, flat screen televisions and air conditioning. Each suite is unique in individuality, some with a private rooftop terrace overlooking Piazza Scanderbeg and others with a Hammam shower. The spacious suites feature classical Roman architectural detailing and exposed beams.
With six different suite styles to choose from, you are bound to find the perfect spot for your vacation. Enjoy a modern living arrangement in the Scanderbeg Suite on the top floor of the Palazzo. The suite houses two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room, dining room and full functioning kitchen–a large space where guests may feel at home. The largest suite–the Ambassador suite–is 166 square meters with one double bedroom and one bedroom with a French bed. The suite faces the inner court, wellness turret and the private terrace where guests can immerse themselves in the authentic Roman atmosphere. The Victory Suite is a home away from home for traveling families. Soft lighting, a vast living room and six-seat dining table is an ideal choice for families looking to live a little more comfortably and privately in Rome. Corinthia "Grand" Hotel Budapest Hungarian Rhapsody
T
By Victoria R. Crosby
his was my second visit to the wonderful city of Budapest in Hungary, but the first time staying at the grand Corinthia Hotel Budapest. It was the occasion of the hotel’s 120th anniversary, and I was there to celebrate at a gala event in the Royal Ballroom at the hotel, which has been restored to it's former glory of the original Grand Royal Hotel built in 1896. It was the largest restoration project in Hungarian history. Last year the hotel was officially declared part of the Hungarian National Value, joining buildings, artworks and other treasures of Hungary. The weather was perfect, warm but not too hot. On my arrival at the Corinthia I was awed by the magnificent marble staircase in the lobby, then welcomed with a refreshing cup of tea in the executive lounge, followed by a relaxing massage in the historic Royal Spa, to rid me of any effects of jet lag. My luxurious suite of rooms, one of the newly remodeled Executive Suites, were the epitome of elegance, and a bottle of Hungarian wine and a dish of chocolate covered strawberries, and other delicacies compliments of our host Jean Mifsud, General Manager , Corinthia Hotel Budapest, were there to greet me. That night was a visit to the Hungarian State Opera House, a short walk from the Corinthia Hotel Budapest, with its beautiful intricately painted ceilings and gilded hall and another impressive marble staircase covered in red carpet. The opera was The Tempest, the Shakespeare story, but in a contemporary 80 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
setting with costumes and scenery in a more modern style. The words were on a screen above the stage in Hungarian and English. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres were served during the intermission. Construction began on The Hungarian State Opera House in 1875 in neo Renaissance style with a Baroque influence, and opened to the public in 1884. It is considered an architectural masterpiece, with fabulous acoustics, one of the best in Europe. On the day of the hotel’s 120th anniversary gala the ladies were taken to Caprice Jewelers to choose jewelry to wear for the big event. Before making our choices of jewels to compliment our gowns, we were served champagne and given a tour of the facility while learning of the history of diamonds and other precious gems. As I was wearing a red gown, I chose a deep pink sapphire drop necklace with matching earrings, and a ruby and diamond ring. It was like winning an Academy Award as I posed for photographs on the grand staircase. Waiting to greet guests at the top of the stairs was the Chairman of the Corinthia Hotels, Alfred Pisani, and his lovely wife Maria. Following the champagne reception everyone proceeded to the grand ballroom where a musical group, Csicso, a Gypsy band, was performing. Led by virtuoso violinist Joseph Csisco, with other string instruments including, cello, viola and a cimbalom, a concert hammered dulcimer, which is a popular Hungarian instrument. The

The Grand Ballroom is adorned with portraits of many famous Hungarians; artists, authors, scientists, and composers. Franz Lizst and Bela Bartok, who are probably the most well known. Bela Bartok frequently conducted his music there. Many people may not be aware that Erno Rubik, who invented the Rubik’s cube was also Hungarian, and Harry Houdini, who was born in Budapest as Eric Weisz. The portrait mural in the Grand Ballroom also includes the illustrious Chairman of the Corinthia Hotel Chain, Alfred Pisani. When the hotel first opened the Lumiere Brothers had the first screening of a motion picture outside of Paris. The hotel was visited by many celebrities over the years, including Josephine Baker, the American born French singer and exotic dancer, and more recently, opera stars Anna Moffo, Renata Scotto and Elizabeth Schwartzkopf. After an amazing dinner paired with Hungarian wines, there was the cutting of the 120th anniversary cake in another room, and people danced while a band played Frank Sinatra songs. Each lady was given a white rose as they left. An after party, featuring music of the disco era, was at the Orpheum Night Club, located downstairs from the hotel, but accessible and open to the public, not just hotel guests. Of course at the end of the evening we had to return our jewels, so like Cinderella our magical evening was over.

band played lovely music, from the classics and traditional waltzes, to popular songs in Hungarian style. Later there was a virtuoso performance by Eszter Horgas, a glamorous flute player in a stunning pink gown.
Budapest is two districts separated by the River Danube, the hilly Buda side and the flatter Pest side. The Corinthia Hotel is on the Pest side, along with many stylish shops and restaurants. The Buda side has the more residential areas, and also the Buda Castle District, with medieval churches, with colorful tile roofs, and museums. A boat tour took us on the River Danube, past the iconic Houses of Parliament with its bright red roof and past the well known bridges, including the Chain Bridge and the Elizabeth Bridge. Hungary is known for its wines and sparkling wines, so we visited the Torley Winery which was founded by Josef Torley in 1882, and after a most interesting tour, tasted the sparkling wines. This Budapest visit was certainly a most memorable experience. Corinthia Hotel Budapest is part of the Corinthia Hotels luxury five-star collection with properties in London, Malta, St. Petersburg (Russia), Prague, Lisbon. Most recently Corinthia acquired the Hotel Astoria in Brussels, commissioned in 1909 by King Leopold ll, It will be completely refurbished and open as the Corinthia Grand Hotel Astoria. In Dubai, Corinthia Hotels was recently engaged to support the design development and operate the iconic luxury beachfront resort being built on the site of the former Meydan Beach Club.

ust ninety minutes outside of New York City, Hampton Hills Country Club is one of New York's best kept secrets–and members like it that way. Hampton Hills is located in the middle of a 2,000 acre pine and oak tree preserve in Westhampton Beach. The wooded setting allows members to escape the rush of the city in favor of peaceful competition against a challenging golf course. Built in 1965 by Francis J. Duane, the course at Hampton Hills Country Club is said by members to never play the same way twice. Duane, a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, frequently collaborated with famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and designed over a dozen courses with Arnold Palmer including the iconic Sea Pines Country Club course in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Complementing a full service pro shop on the premises are the teaching professionals at Hampton Hills, both of whom bring PGA and LPGA experience to deliver an exemplary sporting experience. Jack McGown has been the director of golf for the past twenty-nine seasons. A New York native, McGown has been giving lessons for over thirty-five years. The treatment consists of an exclusive combination of magnetic pulses and radio frequency, merging the two and creating a painless, risk-free procedure that really works. Patients have been ecstatic with the difference in their appearance. A Revolution in Medical Aesthetics -Venus 4D™ Technology Acclaimed by top-dermatologists and aestheticians, Venus Legacy has been touted as the body secret for many well-known Hollywood celebrities. 90 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
While other technologies also exist for melting topical fat, they do not tighten the skin at the same time. This may leave sagging skin in the areas where the treatment was performed and create a new problem where the old one left off. Additionally, most other such treatments are painful and uncomfortable. Unlike them, the Venus Legacy Skin Tightening & Fat Melting Treatment is an all-in-one procedure used to tighten skin, improve elasticity, trim circumference, reduce fat and cellulite, and alleviate wrinkles for both men and women. There are a number of benefits for those who choose to try radio frequency over invasive or surgical aesthetic procedures. The first is safety. Radio frequency treatments have been trusted for decades, and as the industry has innovated, treatments have become even safer and more effective. Venus Concept treatments provide no discomfort, with most patients feeling only a warming sensation during the procedure. How It Works Venus Legacy radio frequency treatments have become a trailblazing force in medical aesthetics. As the industry progresses and fads come and go, radio frequency treatments have remained incredibly effective, safe, and long-lasting. However, Venus Legacy also uses proven (MP)2 technology— Multi-Polar Radio Frequency and Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields—but combines it with the innovative VariPulse™ technology, which enables therapeutic heat energy to safely travel deeper into the skin, creating a
A Demonstartion of Venus 4D™ Technology
“matrix” of energy resulting in increased blood circulation, noticeable skin tightening, and immediately plumped and glowing skin. The radio frequency causes a thermal reaction in the tissue, which stimulates the body’s natural healing response. This restoring response causes new collagen to form, along with the increased production of fibroblasts and new elastin fibers. What really sets Venus Legacy™ apart from other devices is the advanced VariPulse™ technology, an adjustable pulsed suction feature that gently pulls the skin upward. This allows for the energy to penetrate even deeper into the skin to further stimulate healthy circulation and lymphatic drainage. It’s actually like having a fat melting and cellulite reduction treatment in one. The Venus Legacy difference is the speed at which the radio frequency treatments operate, resulting in a more comfortable experience. In our devices, radio frequency waves move from electrode to electrode on the head of the device’s applicator—the section that makes contact with your skin—over a million times per second. This speed is simply too fast for the brain to register; in other words, it’s gone before we can feel it. Other machines that move their frequency between fewer electrodes at a slower speed may result in the patient experiencing some pain during the procedure. The best part? Unlike some other medical aesthetic treatments that can cause discoloration, our radio frequency treatments are safe on 100% of skin tones, meaning anyone can get the results they want without worrying about damaging skin. What to Expect Venus Legacy™ treatments are non-invasive and virtually painless, with many patients comparing the experience to a relaxing hot stone massage! As you lay comfortably on a treatment bed, the technician will apply a gel to the skin that helps the applicator glide more easily and protects your skin from the heat. The treatment provider will then begin using the applicator to apply smooth, consistent movements on the skin’s surface. You’ll feel
the pulsating suction right away along with gradually increasing heat, but only until you reach a comfortable temperature. In fact, the procedure is so pleasant that patients are encouraged to close their eyes and just relax, and some even fall asleep! Each treatment can take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the area. Your skin may appear a little red and warm to the touch afterward, but there’s still no pain at all and the redness usually disappears within a couple hours. Initial results can be seen in as little as one treatment with no pain, discomfort, or downtime! The number of treatment sessions needed to see optimal results usually depends on the area being treated—a minimum of 6-10 treatments are usually recommended for the face, with ten for the neck and other parts of the body. That being said, it is not uncommon for patients to see continuing improvement in their skin up to three months after the series of treatments is complete. So go ahead and melt away those inches, stubborn cellulite, and stretch marks using our Venus Legacy treatment. and completely personalized medical treatment needed to maximize each individual patient’s optimal mental and physical health. What normally would take over 30 hours to do, IGS accomplishes this in a click of a mouse with its mathematical algorithm. The personalized solution starts with laboratory-certified DNA and blood chemistry testing, using IGS, a doctor is able to isolate imbalances and underlying causes in the body by the person’s unique composition of hormones, pre-hormones, fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, minerals, proteins and various genetic markers as well as age, gender and
weight. Based on these no-two-alike factors, a doctor is able to recommend specialized and personalized compounded medications and supplements along with a completely tailored nutrition and exercise plan to reach optimal levels of health both mentally and physically. Integrated Genetic Solutions Helping You Look and Feel Younger
L
By W.A. Muller
isa DeMayo and Dawn Anatra were far more concerned with youthfulness than youth. These two bright, successful and innovative powerful women realized they were on to something big when they crossed paths with a brilliant technology from Silicon Valley that wasn’t being sold or marketed. “I couldn’t believe that this technology was just sitting there and hadn’t been taken to market” said Lisa DeMayo. “Never before have I seen or heard of anything like this program.” “I thought I had found a solution to the many unanswered questions being asked in the health and wellness world, but after I tried the program I knew there was nothing else like this. This was the business opportunity I had been waiting for my entire career” stated Dawn Anatra, a veteran in the medical arena. In a world where anti-aging breakthroughs are rapidly occurring, this technology was the perfect complement to aesthetics and surgery, but
94 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
now from the inside out. Lisa and Dawn quickly figured out that using one technology without the other is like putting veneers on decaying teeth. If people are not healthy, they tend to spend more and more time and money on quick fixes that only mask the problems. Lisa and Dawn knew this game-changing collaboration would take the Integrated Medical world by storm. Instead of using fillers and makeup trying to just look healthy, healthy people are simply youthful and vibrant. It turns out Lisa and Dawn were more than correct. They went to market in January 2016 and the doctors that used it on their patients felt it was revolutionizing medicine. Dr Eduardo Bruno Martins, MD PhD said, “Over the 30 years, I have been in medicine and research, I have seen breakthroughs about once every decade. Integrated Genetic Solutions allows doctors to apply what would normally take dozens of hours of calculations and research with the click of a mouse. Integrated Genetic Solutions’ approach to personalized medicine revolutionizes how doctors treat their patients.
One of the patients, Patty, said “I didn’t realize how bad I felt until I felt well. Integrated Genetic Solutions has changed my life. I was wasting money on vitamins, etc. This program has given me my spark back, and now I have a feeling of enthusiasm. It changed my cravings and without any effort, I started to crave healthy food and I lost 15 pounds. My goal was not to lose weight. My goal was to become more balanced, yet it happened naturally because my body was getting the correct amount of nutraceuticals it needed and my appetite for healthy foods, energy level and recovery time after exercise all improved. I'm very grateful!!!” Using IGS, a doctor can provide a comprehensive, individualized solution to optimize patients’ mental and physical health. The roadmap starts with laboratory-certified DNA and chemistry blood testing. Using Integrated Genetic Solutions, a doctor can isolate imbalances and more importantly the underlying causes by applying specific treatment programs with customized dosages of bio identical hormone replacement and supplements. It is like creating a snowflake: no two are the same just like a person’s genes. It is the difference between buying something
off the rack and a custom-made tailored suit. Personalized packages of NSF GMP-certified supplements and nutraceuticals are tailored for each patient based on their individual optimal body chemistry. Doctors report that optimal body chemistry can deliver better aesthetics, increased muscle to fat ratio, more energy, sharper mental acuity, better memory, and a longer life. Integrated Genetic Solutions' programs are designed to return hormones, pre-hormones, vitamins, minerals, proteins and electrolytes to optimal levels. Lisa and Dawn won’t share their age but pictures don’t lie. Dawn said,"She now has the energy she had in her twenties but the business knowledge she has acquired over the last thirty years.” Lisa said, “She cant remember feeling this good.” How well does it work? Lisa and Dawn recommend that people try it because it is hard to describe being how it feels to be awake after twenty years. They did say IGS has grown faster than 50% each month since it launched. integratedgeneticsolutions.com August 2016 | 95

RaiseAvoid Healthy Eaters These Common Mistakes
A
By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN
s I mentioned a few months ago, I recently became a first-time mother. Since educating those around me about nutrition and dietetics is a passion of mine, it has been quite fun to discuss all things related to food and feeding with my fellow mommy friends. Because this is such a popular topic in my new social circle, I wanted to share the common mistakes to avoid in order to raise healthy and adventurous eaters. 1) Lack of flavor Where does it say that kids prefer bland foods? Although it can be agreed that sprinkling spicy cayenne pepper on your little one’s mashed sweet potatoes is probably not the best idea, there is no need to keep every meal super boring and tasteless. Feel free to add some ground cinnamon to jazz up those potatoes or marinate their chicken in an allergen-friendly sauce. Eventually you can work your way up to adding more herbs, spices, sauces, and condiments as they mature. 98 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
2) Too much snacking If your little ones do not eat much during mealtime, you may feel tempted to allow them to snack between meals. Although snacking is important to keep your kids properly fueled throughout the day, be careful to choose nutritious snacks like fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. If you opt for the processed junk food like pretzels, crackers, chips, and the like, do not be surprised if they prefer snacks to meals. In general, the more children snack, the less they tend to eat at the main meal. 3) Not letting kids get hungry Many parents feel unsettled by the thought that their child is “hungry.” To be blunt, if your child has regular access to nutritious foods, it is certainly okay for him/her to be a little “hungry.” I am obviously not encouraging you to skip meals and truly let your child go hungry, but a child can make it from lunch to dinner (sometimes just a mere 3-4 hour span) without a snack. If your child has a long stretch between meals or is playing sports,
snacking may be more necessary. As adults, we have days where we snack more frequently ourselves. It is likely that there are some days your child may need more snacks as well. Still, I do not feel that kids need a constant stream of snacks readily available to them on every occasion. 4) Not letting them decide what they like for themselves In general, children will eat what they are exposed to. Simply put, if you expose your children to a wide variety of foods and cuisines, it is more likely that they will consume a wide variety of foods and cuisines. On the flipside, if you limit your kids’ options because you don’t think they will like certain food items, you are doing their developing taste buds a disservice. I recommend deciding WHAT is introduced and WHEN it is introduced and allowing your children to decide WHICH items and HOW MUCH of them they want to consume. 5) Sharing your food preferences with them It is important to keep your food offerings “emotionally neutral.” If you get extra excited about pizza night but make it clear that you are not as into
dinner when salmon is being served, your kids will likely feel the same way. Similarly, when you are introducing a new vegetable, there is no need to make a big deal or give the impression that you are going to be watching for their response. In other words, just put the food down and let it be.

By Elaine LaPersonerie | Photo Credit: Cynosure
ou're at the gym, you're dieting and pockets of fat just won't disappear. Well, there's a new FDA approved solution sweeping the beauty industry and it just hit Long Island. The best part? You can squeeze it in during your lunch break or just before picking up the kids.
Dr. Peter Neumann, Chief Plastic Surgeon at Nassau Plastic Surgical Associates in Roslyn is now offering SculpSure - a 25 minute, non-invasive fat burning treatment proven to kill 24% of fat in a targeted area. Patients can opt to treat areas of fat around their bellies, thighs, love handles, back or arms with no downtime - and kiss stubborn fat goodbye! "This is a remarkable, easy solution for women and men trying to lose fat. In six to twelve weeks, patients are seeing excellent results with multiple inches lost. Patients are back in the gym the same day, resuming normal activities while SculpSure continues to work its magic", says Dr. Neumann. "This ground-breaking treatment isn't a fat loss gimmick and gurantees results. I see it working for patients everyday."
102 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
SculpSure is a breakthrough in light-based, body-contouring technology. Applicators snap into a plastic frame that is fit to your body's target area. Once the treatment starts, patients feel a varying cool/warm sensation that does not affect or damage the skin's surface. The lasers work to penetrate deep levels of fat throughout the duration of the treatment. Patients can treat multiple areas in one visit (25 minutes per area) and unlike liposuction which typically requires general anesthesia, limited activity and a six week recovery window, SculpSure enables people to get back to work and life the same day. Lila Beudert Hamptons Hottest Entrepreneur Goes Global
S
By Jennifer Pelaez, Photo by Tom Fitzgerald and Pam Deutchman Styling by Janine Mcloughlin
outh Fork native and entrepreneur, Lila Beudert, brings the art of hair care and affordable glamour to the Hamptons and beyond with her recently launched new concept salon, Blow Beauty Bars, that has been redefining the salon experience. Her vision and philosophy of providing the best customer service and experience has made her Blow Beauty Bars an immediate success, both in Bridgehampton and East Hampton, as well as in her recent expansion into Manhasset, with New Jersey and Europe on the horizon. Inspiring and ebulliently charming, Lila sits down with 25A to candidly speak about her entry into the industry at the young age of 24 and her subsequent rise into the visionary businesswoman she has now become. As a lifelong East Ender, Lila understands the market and spotted a hole in the existing beauty options that seemed overpriced and inconvenient, especially for locals who live there year round without access to affordable salons. She had seen many blow dry bars popping up in New York City, and at the urging of her fiancé, decided to delve into this new venture. What especially appealed to Lila was the knowledge that she was contributing to women looking and feeling better about themselves. So in April 2014, she opened up her first location in Bridgehampton, which was an instant success. Embraced by both Manhattanites weekending in the Hamptons, and locals who truly appreciate the taste of affordable luxury, this easy,

convenient and fun salon was destined to become a local favorite. Who wouldn't welcome a pristinely furnished modern space where you can walk in, get your tresses styled, and all starting at $40. With an overflowing waitlist and summer quickly approaching, Lila boldly opened up a second location only two months later in East Hampton, confident it would also be well-received. Blow Beauty Bars at first were only designed to specialize exclusively in blowouts. However, the ever-evolving nature of the beauty industry caused Lila to gradually expand her salon’s menu to offer a wider range of services at the request of her clients. The updated service menus in all of her Beauty Bars now include cuts and color, as well as makeup. The flagship location in Bridgehampton also features nail services and a Bare Wax Bar, as well as eyelash extension services. Lila says, “It should really be a one-stop shop for all hair needs, and now I'm moving into a one-stop shop for all your beauty needs.” You can even purchase products to extend the life of your blowout with her recently launched full-range signature product line. BarbaraA Timeless Waszak Grena Artist for All
I
By Christopher A. Pape
nspired by the feeling of freedom in God’s world, artist Barbara Waszak Grena, shares her passion for beauty, nature and all components of the natural world. Barbara enjoys painting outdoors, where the changing attributes of climate, hues and wind add finishing touches to her work.
Influenced by her father and maternal grandfather, what was once a hobby at age five soon transitioned into a life choice where Barbara has continued her success through several decades. After studying art at Newton High School in Jackson Heights, Queens, her journey as an aspiring artist pushed her in several different directions. Her artistic endeavors in drawing, painting, pastels, commercial art and photography give her artwork a strong sense of novelty and a distinctive quality. A notable artist, Barbara’s artwork has been featured in numerous shows, including the Guild of Creative Art, the Ocean County Artist Guild, the Little Silver Borough Hall and Georgian Court College. Her work has 108 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
been featured in exhibits at the Lever House Gallery, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, the Pastel Society of America (P.S.A.), and Salmagundi Club, honoring her talent throughout New York City. She has received several awards and medals for her work and is currently recognized as a New York signature member of the Pastel Society of America. Barbara’s latest accomplishment was inclusion in the Best of Worldwide Landscape Artists book. One of Barbara’s most valued pieces of art is her pastel “In Honor of All the Heroes,” a tribute to all of the heroes and victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Little by little, the portrait was developed with intense feeling and emotion, to fully encompass the meaning behind this day in history. In July 2004, the pastel was accepted for the exhibition entitled “American Dreams Post 9/11” at the Salmagundi Club. A personal letter from both former Mayor Giuliani and Mayor Bloomberg was sent to Barbara thanking her for the moving depiction of the September 11th tragedy.
In Memory Of All The Heroes-Pastel Anna-Oil, Private Collection
When beginning a work of art, Barbara’s key is to not think about selling her work but to think about what pleases her and where her inspiration stems from. If need be, she will take photographs to capture a moment that she would like to replicate on canvas. She will then start the piece in her studio, and decide which medium to paint with. Her artwork is a collection of oils, pastels and watercolor portraits, figures and landscapes. She is known for her figure work, but due to popular demand, her focus lately has been on landscape art where she paints the rich colors of the earth around her. Barbara organizes her work by designating specific days of the week to working outdoors, in her studio or teaching her skills to other adult students. Depending on her choice of art medium (oil, pastel or watercolor) Barbara’s work can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete.
Reclining–Oil
Drawing is the foundation of a good artist. In Italy, during the Renaissance, drawing was taught before any other form of art was practiced. Once mastering the skill of drawing, then one could move forward by breaking the rules and making the art one’s own. Simply put, technique is the foundation of any valuable art. Barbara’s work combines classicism, aesthetic and natural components of the surrounding environment. The driving force behind her work comes from the heart–art that is attached to her family she holds close to her. Her collection is vast, with thousands upon thousands of drawings and artwork. Upon entering her studio, and seeing the eclectic selection of her artwork, you are bound to walk out with a classic Barbara W. The Breadth Within Art Gallery Brings Art to Roslyn
A
By Georgette Malitsis
n artist since early childhood, Daniella Cippitelli’s dream of opening her own gallery came to life last February. Located in the old town of Roslyn, The Breadth Within Art Gallery has a unique twist, hosting yoga and meditation classes alongside various wellness workshops right inside the gallery. The gallery’s modern aesthetic brings the contemporary art scene of New York City right to the North Shore. You can find Daniella’s abstract paintings and fine art photography featured within the gallery. With her extensive art background, she has served in various senior-level creative roles with ad agencies and publishing companies after graduating college with a B.F.A. in Arts Management. She also holds an M.A. in Media Studies and an A.A. in Commercial Art. At the Breadth Within Art Gallery, Daniella represents not only herself but other emerging artists as well. The art displayed in the gallery is carefully selected to reflect a sense of our deeper selves. She chooses art based on the feelings that are reflected in the artwork, hoping that these pieces enhance the experience of anyone who enters the gallery–whether they are seeking to purchase art or practice yoga. Practicing yoga in an art setting goes beyond just the physical level. Along with the obvious benefits, practicing yoga and meditation in such a setting allows guests to also connect with the art around them. Yoga is physical, spiritual and emotional while art can be both visual and expressive– these 110 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
human activities go hand-in-hand and together can bring about peace and balance. The gallery hosts yoga therapy for cancer patients through the non-profit Magic Happens Foundation. The idea is to give patients the opportunity to escape the medical setting and allow them to come and experience control over their bodies, discovering peace within the gallery. The gallery lives by the philosophy that what you surround yourself with outside, nurtures what you feel on the inside–leaving the gallery you will feel far more tranquil than when you came in. Stay connected with the Breadth Within Art Gallery by downloading their interactive app, allowing users to see how the gallery’s art looks in their personal space while offering access to their latest art collections as well! The app also works well for interior designers who now have the ability to browse through art on the spot without having to visit the gallery. This convenient and efficient app offers access to the gallery at all times. Daniella Cippitelli’s Breadth Within Art Gallery will continue to spread their philosophy and hope to expand with future locations. She will continue to work with other artists to represent the gallery specifically as a way for guests to experience harmony and balance motivated by the feeling of art. thebreadthwithin.com

Jackie's Joke Box Follow Jackie on Twitter for a daily joke! @JackieMartling A baby polar bear goes up to his mother and says, "Mom, am I a polar bear?" His mother says, "Of course you're a polar bear. I'm a polar bear and your father's a polar bear." The cub says, "But am I one-hundred per cent pure polar bear?" She says, "Go ask your old man." The baby polar bear goes up to his father and says, "Pop, am I pure polar bear? I mean, one-hundred percent pure polar bear?" His father says, "Of course you're a polar bear. I'm a polar bear, your mother's a polar bear, both my parents were polar bears, both of your mother's parents were polar bears, all of our grandparents, both sides, were polar bears ... yes, you're one-hundred percent pure polar bear. Why do you ask?" The cub says, "Because I'm freezing." A guy's sitting on a train looking over at a lady with her baby and he says, "Lady, that's the ugliest baby I've ever seen. My God, what an ugly kid. That baby looks like a monkey." The lady starts crying uncontrollably, she's really freaking out. She runs up to the conductor and says, "That man over there insulted me. He's so mean. I'm so upset." The conductor says, "Calm down, ma'am, calm down. Next stop we'll jump off and get you a nice hot cup of coffee. Hey, maybe we'll even find a banana for your monkey." A lady says to her husband, "Arnie, I want breast implants." He says, "We can't afford it. Go grab a wad of toilet paper and rub it up and down between your chests." She says, "Will that make them bigger?" He says, "It worked on your butt." 120 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
