REIGNS SUPREME THE 14-TIME WWE WOMEN'S CHAMPION KNOWS HOW TO BRING THE HEAT

hat’s “Woooo” mean?

Every Superstar has their own catchphrase and this one is a tribute to my dad, Ric Flair. He started the "Woooo" in the 1970s and it originated from the Jerry Lee Lewis classic 'Great Balls of Fire' where part of the song ended with "Woo".

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned from your legendary father? The biggest thing I learned from my dad is the importance of hard work. Whether it’s a live event in Colorado Springs or WrestleMania in front of 150,000 people, you give it 100 percent every night. If you believe in yourself, the fans will also believe in you.

How has women’s wrestling evolved over the years?

It has evolved a lot, but change doesn't happen overnight and there is still more work to be done. However, I am fortunate to have been the face of WWE's Women's Evolutionmaking history with my WrestleMania 35 triplethreat match against Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey, the first-ever WrestleMania main event featuring females. I've also headlined seven WrestleManias in a row, becoming the first female Superstar in WWE history to main event a singles match on Raw, SmackDown, and a Premium Live Event.

What’s it like to be the WWE champion? Did your dad have any input on your look and style?

Yes, I am a 14-time WWE Women's Champion and I've always said that I don't really care about the number, but now I want to pass it and I want to break my dad's record (16-time WWE Champion) and John Cena's record (16time WWE Champion). My dad always said, "Dress the part you want".

44 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

FLAIR

Where do you get your amazing robes - what fashions/ beauty products do you prefer?

So much goes into my character and I am constantly thinking of ways to make her larger than life. My first robe was at WrestleMania 32 and I noticed how many people loved it. Since then I really tried to go off of that and at each event that I have an opportunity to showcase new gear or a new robe, I really put in the detail in making the character look like "The Queen". They have gotten so much bigger and better and have elevated my character. I am thankful that I can work with WWE Seamstress and Costume Designer, Terry Anderson on all of my gear and robes.

Why do you think fans love your wrestling character?

I think they love that I built this character that was confident, dominant, arrogant, strong, and of course - I could perform in the ring and on the mic.

Photographer: Dylan Coulter Stylist: Christina Pacelli

What’s your relationship with Stephanie McMahon - do you see her being able to continue to impact the WWE?

Stephanie McMahon is not only one of my mentors, but she is a huge supporter and I will forever be grateful to have been able to learn from her. She is an incredible person and has an incredible business acumen and of course, her love and passion for WWE is prevalent. She will 100% continue to make an impact on WWE - she was the force behind WWE's Women's Evolution and without her, female Superstars would not be getting the opportunities they so deserve.

Do you see yourself as a strong female role model? I’ve always wanted that superhero in my real life and for little girls, it’s just having a role model. You just wanna wrap your arms around them, you wanna be everything that

they see you as. Remember that little girls don't see you the way you see you. And that’s what is most important.

Tell us a little about your daily health regimen and diet. Obviously, as a WWE Superstar, you have to look the part and physically be able to perform the moves in the ring, so I do put in the work at the gym - but it's all about moderation and having a rest day is very important to getting stronger. As far as my diet, I always say everything in moderation - have a candy bar or a glass of wine. When I used to limit myself or give myself too many no's, I would never end up fulfilling my fitness goals and everything that I worked so hard for would become undone.

A number of UFC fighters have explored regenerative stem-cell therapy to heal scars and injuries- do you think professional wrestlers might follow suit? Have you had any major injuries you’ve had to deal with? Obviously the physical demands of being an athlete - whether you are a UFC fighter or a WWE Superstar - are intense and injuries do take place and yes, I have had to deal with many injuries myself. Regenerative stem-cell therapy is very interesting and I'm sure many athletes have seen positive results from it, but I have not personally done anything around regenerative stem-cell therapy.

Any new projects or causes you are excited to be involved with?

I had dental surgery after WrestleMania 39, so I was out of the ring for a few months and I am excited to return soon!!

July 2023 51

April, how did you first get into staffing?

Many years ago, I was 23 years old living in los angeles with a newborn and I hired a baby nurse, this is really how I got started. (An almost bad situation turned into a passion) I hired a baby nurse through a local agency recommended by a trusted pediatrician, we ended up finding that she was giving him something to sleep and she was shaking him violently, it could have been a really serious situation --it ended up that he was fine, thank god, (but we realized after making complaints to the agency and them not taking it seriously that changes were needed. There weren’t strict enough laws or regulations at that time, so I started my company (I also was a former nanny at one time and LOVED babies) a nanny agency back in 1995 in Boston. ) I got together with a good friend, she was a nanny, and understood the interview process, as well as knew the local agencies. --we started out as just a little tiny nanny agency back in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

For many years we were placing nannies successfully but fell into a rut and needed to expand or think outside the box. We still place nannies today, more of the governess type, ROTA NANNIES/ high salary professional nannies. So, fast forward. Who doesn't want to leave cold Boston for beautiful sunny Palm Beach Florida (laugh)? I have family here. They are here for the season--and I thought why not try doing something in Florida?

So, we came out here! When I came to this area - beautiful South Florida, I ended up having a lot of successful, ultra-high net worth clients that would say," I know you are a nanny agency but can you help me with my yacht or can you help me find a private chef or someone for my private plane," and I'm like wait a minute, why just specialize in nanny placements when we can be placing 5-10 people a year, we have so much more opportunity to place other types of staff. Why focus on just nannies?

So in 2006-2007, we started the Wellington Agency which now started to focus on estate

52 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A
"THIS IS REALLY PERSONAL TO ME AND I REALLY WANT MY CLIENTS TO BE HAPPY. I WANT THE PRIVATE SERVICES PROFESSIONALS TO BE HAPPY. WHEN EVERYONE IS HAPPY. I’M HAPPY, AND I CAN SLEEP WELL."

staffing. So, now I had to learn about butlers and executive housekeepers and chauffeurs and bodyguards. Being in Palm Beach, there was so much wealth, there was such need for not one or two hires but now they were looking for 10 qualified staff members, 4 housekeepers, 2 full-time chefs...bodyguards...and so it really evolved from just something very small to something that's very big. Our agency is one of the most successful and well-known in our industry. I believe it has a lot to do with having the right connection and a true understanding of what our clients want and the level of service they require without them having to say too much. WE GET IT, and We get it done! Once you work with the Wellington Agency there is a level of trust and friendship that begins. I'm not going to mention any names but I have some very ultra-high net worth, high profile clients that I have been working with for many years and they have referred people in Los Angeles and London so even though it is a small business it feels big with the amount of work we have and so it's a very interesting company in how we are getting requests for lots of private security and all that.

Do you get any unusual staffing requests?

A lot! (laugh) We've had a couple of really odd requests over the years and people will call up and say, "I know this is going to sound unique but I'm looking for a monkey butler...or a cookie butler," and I'm thinking like what is that? but we'll say, "ok give us a job description and we'll work on it," and so we were successful we got a butler for a monkey...it was basically a nanny for a monkey, whatever he needs, it was a great experience and a great client.

It wasn't Michael Jackson's Bubbles was it?

No, it wasn't Bubbles ...it was in Miami, not California (laugh), Or WAS IT??? lol

What's a cookie butler?

A cookie butler was for an infamous banker, no longer around...but he wanted

somebody who was going to bring cookies at a certain time and it was kind of cool ...he would come up and just make sure that this person had what he needed.

What's your vetting process?

If someone comes to us and says, "We are looking for a private chef for a very high profile client in Los Angeles and this is what they are looking for," they'll give us the diet, the hours, how many people is it around the clock is there travel? Whatever the details may be we then start going through our database of people who we have been working with for many years -these people have worked for very high-profile celebrities over the years, this one won't be star-struck, this one has the longevity working for these families. A lot of time you have to have a thick skin and it's a lot of hours so we're just going through resumes to see who has the best fit and the background and the references have to be stellar. We have a reference department and they will call up and ask the candidates’ former employers approx.. 35 questions as to the candidate's work history, work ethic, duties and responsibilities, and reason for leaving. We are putting together a whole portfolio on that one individual, like a chef and we'll send it over to the client and say "This is Chef David he has 20 years of experience," and they'll take a look at his resume, letter of recommendation and picture of the chef and their food and then based on what we send and they will take a look and decide who they would want to do a tasting or a trial with-so they'll have them come in and prepare meals and whoever they end up picking at the end whoever they hire, they would be employing them directly as we don't employ anyone.

What territories do you cover?

Palm Beach and New York City is our biggest area, next to Los Angeles, The Hamptons are very busy over the summer months...Miami is huge right now because so many people have moved to Miami from LA and New York, Palm Beach, and the Jupiter area. A lot of

our clients have homes in the Bahamas, and London so we do some recruiting in London, and Boston, where the need is in the major cities.

Any funny anecdotes?

Secrets? My lips are sealed!!! There are a lot of stories we hear on a regular basis, I let the staff vent, and those conversations stay with me. The reason we have the reputation we have is we listen, we understand, and we carefully give guidance and advice, we remind the staff that confidentiality is key, and privacy is imperative in our industry this conversation never happened. 90% of all household staff have signed numerous non-discloser agreements during their career in private service. One blab about a family not only can land you in court, but you’ll never work in this industry again. Today’s salaries are just unbelievable, what people are offering is just pretty incredible from where we were 4 or 5 years ago. Not only great pay but excellent benefits are being offered, just 10-15 years ago it was a fraction of what families are offering to their staff today. I’m so grateful to be part of that change. One client wanted to hire someone to look after the fish, some of these fish tanks are 2-3 floors for something like that we had to reach out to 2 major aquariums and I think the person we did end up finding was from the Boston aquarium.

Is being a butler a hard job?

When you have a butler it's not just answering the door it's really white glove service, very personalized, some may say not want to use the title butler and use more of a casual title – Household Manager. The roles go hand and hand unless it’s a formal household which requires training and education.

What's the secret to your success?

I'm surrounded by an amazing team, my team doesn’t just check out after the placement has been made, it’s a lot of follow-ups to make sure things are going smoothly and to reassure both parties that we are here for them

July 2023 53

for the duration of their employment. It’s also how we value both our clients and the private service provider, “the staff “- It’s important to me to have a good long-term relationship with both, not as a business transaction, but a friendship. And trust me I’ve made quite a few friends that started out as clients and now I call them friends. I think we have good relationships with everyone, if you are a housekeeper or private security or a client we just have a good relationship with everyone. We have very good reviews, all of the high-profile clients send people to us, refer people to us and we don't really have a lot of angry people. if you give people what they want to will keep coming back and they will respect you.

but if one of those people fall down as a weak link sometimes the whole pyramid falls apart...but there are a lot of homes that run very well, but it all depends on the people they have working with them and how they are treated of course.

F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, "The very rich are different from you and me." Are super-wealthy people different than ordinary people in terms of their level of expectations or perfectionism? Of course, they want perfection, they expect top-notch everything and people to be perfect and so I do see that sometimes as an issue as perfection is possible. “BUT keep in mind, their expectations match the salary they are offering, so, there is a level that is expected, and if you want top dollar you better deliver!”

So you have to get personally involved?

just a real balance and we can only do the best we can but there are people that hang on to staff for 10 years --there is a difference between Palm Beach and New York. Palm Beach has a lot of turnovers --there is a lot of mediation in this area.

Any do's and don'ts to staffing?

When it comes to staffing - are you only as strong as your weakest link?

That's true--if you are talking about the household...when I try to explain to people how it works, filling these household positions can be tricky, - it starts with a chief of staff or an estate manager, depending on the background and the wealth of the C.O.S, or EM, depending on how many properties there have and, or how many they have on staff, it's like a company instead of a CEO, CFO you have a chief of staff or an estate manager or it could be a butler, you have your housekeepers, a driver you have you have nannies, you have chefs and the list goes down the line, you could have 20 people running your house if you have many properties but if you have a good relationship with your staff and treat them well it goes smoothly

We do a lot of mediation here. Sometimes I feel like I am a therapist because I really want it to work out, and I want clients to understand these are people, and sometimes you need to be flexible. “ I wish I had more time on my hands, I’d do a video or write a book on how to maintain a happy household of staff” We want our client's household to run smoothly, there are pros and cons (not sure about pros and cons) and so there’s a lot of mediation that goes on for the first 3-5 months, trying to smooth out the edges because no one is perfect. Some of these homes, especially in Palm Beach, are very very large and are 40 to 70,000 square feet and they have 40-60 people on staff running their homes 24 hours a day. Some people say there is no room for error but I spend a lot of time with my clients trying to understand what we can do to make things work and if they are a family with high turnover we have to decide, do we still want to work with that household? If you can't please them then we also don't want to end up with a bad reputation --it's

I try to educate my clients so that they will have the best experience and a lot of times they will not listen and I have to just do my best. Say you have six housekeepers in your house, experienced housekeepers will know how to be in a home with a family without the family knowing you are actually there. It might sound rude to say," Do your job but don't be heard or seen," or, "Your personality, you leave it at the door," and it's because this is their home it's not an office. You are in their life every day. How many times can you walk through your living room and say, "Good morning, good morning, good morning, hi how are you?" you just want to live there. If some people take it personally then this is not the industry for you to be working in...cause it's just a job. Sometimes the employers will put their guard down and start talking with their employees and that can be a big no-no--the boundaries get really confusing and crossed and that is a huge issue and then people lose really good staff.

It seems like you really love what you do.

I absolutely love what I do! Making my clients' lives easier, and finding people great jobs that they love while making a great salary gives me great joy.

ith an unparalleled aesthetic, eye-catching designs, and raving clientele, Leah Logue has secured her spot as one of the most sought-after interior designers in Palm Beach County.

Self-taught over a decade of flipping historic and distressed properties, this University of Florida graduate found herself looking for a new creative outlet when the pandemic resulted in a price surge of homes and materials. What began as decorating and consulting for fans of her work, became full scale, ground-up construction projects working alongside the world’s leading architects and developers.

Reflecting on her start, Leah recounts posting before and after photos on her social media, “Almost immediately, I started getting opportunities that I just couldn’t turn down.” Her book of business now ranges from professional athletes to business moguls, tapping into Palm Beach’s star studded residents. “I’ve been extremely lucky to work with incredible people, creating homes together in a way that we become like family.”

INTERIOR DESIGNER

LEAH LOGUE

60 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

A second generation South Floridian, Leah was raised on sunshine and the shoreline, influencing her “Pop of Coastal” design aesthetic, merging transitional decor with coastal accents. As trends evolved and her clients’ tastes influenced each design, her portfolio expanded from coastal contemporary to dark and dramatic, vibrant and bold.

With each Logue Decorators design, Leah strives to create a statement moment. “I’m not sure who is crazier, me for coming up with some of these wild ideas or my clients for allowing me to do them. But I’m so grateful they give me the opportunity to bring my visions to life. Sometimes I forget it’s even work because I enjoy it so much - but don’t tell my clients that!”

Leah’s keen attention to detail combined with her enthusiasm to create innovative designs has created a demand while leading her to be extremely selective in accepting projects. “As a perfectionist executing a distinct vision, I oversee every detail from conception to completion. When I say yes to a job, I’m committing myself to that project and client for months, sometimes even years. My clients laugh when I say I’m moving in for the next few months, until they realize I’m not kidding,” Leah jokes. “I say no to almost everything, so that when I say yes I can give everything.” Which is also why a majority of Leah’s business comes from referrals or repeat clients. SO BOOKED UP

A Women's Book Club With Heart

So Booked Up in Palm Beach, Florida was created to expand members' personal literary experience by reading and discussing works by best-selling authors in a friendly and open atmosphere. The club provides a social and welcoming environment for ladies with an interest in and appreciation for reading and learning, all while raising funds and other charitable donations for charities and organizations.

According to President Biani Trimboli, "We have a fabulous group of ladies, we encourage

each other and we give back. There is so much that can be achieved through the book club. We get our community involved in many different things and organizations. We highlight the authors a lot. If you go on our social media we ask our members every time they go somewhere with a book to take a picture and post it on social media and tag the author. The authors get so excited, "Oh my book is in Ireland or my book was on an African safari this month, it's just so exciting. We are really proud of all our members. It's a lot of fun and so many people have become close friends within the group which I love."

Everyone who donates to the charity of the month has a chance to win a signed copy of the book of the month. Every penny raised directly benefits the designated charity.

"The ladies have to bring their books to the meetings and they have to donate their books. The reason we do that is that we want to be able to donate to people or organizations that do not have access to books, says Trimboli. "We bring all these fun books for children and young adults to read and the books also go to nursing homes and those ladies love those novels and it's just something that brings smiles to all the faces."

HOW IT WORKS

We read one book a month. Every month we ask the featured author to choose a charity to support by auctioning off an autographed copy of their book. It is important to note ALL of the funds raised go directly to the charity of the month. We ask that you donate whatever amount you can as no donation is too small. We also donate our books after our meetings to different local organizations.

Meeting Details:

We meet the last Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm. 335 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

Treasurer: Lana Bezenyan Sukhman

Lana Bezenyan Sukhman is a first generation American. She was born in Brooklyn, NY to Ukrainian immigrants, who escaped an iron fisted authoritarian state in order to provide future generations of their family a life of freedom. As Lana was growing up, her family instilled in her the importance of why they escaped the former Soviet Union, a communist nation, which enforced religious persecution, suppression of freedom of speech, and repression of democratic rights. This inspired her to want to help others and to be the first family member to attend college and law school, in order to continue to fight for those freedoms.

Lana attended Rutgers University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. In 2003 Lana was admitted to Seton Hall School of Law as a Deans Scholar, earning her Juris Doctor degree in 2006. UNDERJUNGLE

Deep below the surface, our world is cold, dark, and content. Colors are fickle. Red disappears first as you descend, followed by the yellow of the sun. The hundred shades of blue last the longest, but eventually there is only black—and the candied ooze of the ocean floor...

In Underjungle, an intelligent life form known as the yc exist in the ocean’s depths, an apex predator among most fish. Long ago, this species fractured from a single group into seven distinct tribes, each with their own dialect and cultural idiosyncrasies. TaylorSwift

is the Hottest

Music Act of the Summer

hether or not you like Taylor Swift, her music is impossible to ignore. Swift has been making waves since her debut album, Taylor Swift, went platinum when she was only 15. She’s tied for winning the most Grammys for Album of the Year, and has had nine songs top the Billboard Hot 100. Most recently, Swift has been touring across the country for her popular Eras Tour, which will continue internationally later in the summer. Her set list promotes her newest album, Midnights, but Swift also performs beloved songs from her previous “eras”, tailoring her show to the city she performs

in. Fans of Taylor Swift are incredibly excited about the Eras Tour, as it is her first tour postpandemic. According to the New York Times, 3.5 billion people attempted to access the Ticketmaster website to buy tickets on their first day of public sales. Ticketmaster could not handle this insanely high demand and canceled the sale, leading to resale tickets being offered for up to $1400. Despite the difficulties, more than two million tickets were still sold on the opening day of sales, the most any artist has ever sold in one day, according to CNN. However, getting Eras tickets was only half of the struggle — actually commuting to the venue became

almost impossible in some cases, as tickets for the MBTA commuter rail to Swift’s Boston concert sold out in hours. Clearly, seeing Swift perform is the opportunity of a lifetime.

Taylor Swift is undeniably an icon. Just what, exactly, makes her so popular?

THERE ARE THREE KEY ELEMENTS TO HER SUCCESS: HER MUSIC, HER CELEBRITY PERSONA, AND HER RELATABILITY.

68 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

FEARLESS RED SPEAK NOW REPUTATION MIDNIGHTS

Taylor Swift’s music is catchy. We’ve all heard it on the radio for the past two decades, and despite

the changes in genre from country to pop to alternative rock, her voice is clear and recognizable. It is not only the heartwarming guitar strumming

from Fearless and the head bopping beat from 1989 that make her music so beloved, but also her song lyrics. Every Swift song is a story with a resonating

message, which ranges from the sweet Romeo and Juliet style romance of “Love Story” to “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince”, which Swift stated is

“about disillusionment with our crazy world of politics and inequality, set in a metaphorical high school.” You might be skeptical of the effect of lyrics on a song’s popularity, but lyrics are instrumental in allowing the listener to connect with the world a song creates. For example, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)”, is largely verse, with very few background instruments and only Swift’s voice for backing vocals. Despite the relatively simple musical outline, the song received high praise and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the longest song to ever do so, according to the Guiness Book of World Records.

Taylor Swift’s career has lasted for almost twenty years, and yet she has never faded from the public eye. One reason for this success is her consistent production of music, usually one album release every two years. However, each album marks a shift into a new genre, and Swift constantly reinvents

her image along with it. In her early country music albums Taylor Swift and Fearless, Swift sings with a Southern drawl and presents herself as an innocent, sundress-wearing teen, which is reflected in her songs about first love and heartbreak. However, as Swift made the transition into pop and rock with her albums Red and 1989, she dropped her accent and began dressing in flamboyant outfits that echoed the glitter of the ‘80s, channeling the look of a true pop star. Swift’s more recent albums, Folklore and Evermore, explore an indie-folk and alternative rock style, and her muted pastel aesthetic matches the quiet and thoughtful tone of the music. With each reinvention of her artistic style and presentation, Swift’s fanbase grows larger and more dedicated. Swift is able to draw attention to her music by creating new content, but more importantly she is able to keep the attention by making such radical shifts and consistently doing it fabulously.

70 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

Taylor Swift is not the only artist who can write beautiful lyrics and change up her style – but she is one of the few artists who is incredibly open about her personal life. In her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, Swift shares her difficult journey with body dysmorphia and eating disorders, and the intense pressure that she felt from the media. This vulnerability allows Swift to be seen as herself, rather than as an unreachable star. Swift’s openness allows her fanbase to connect with her more easily, and the millions of women that comprise it can likely relate to her past experience with sexual assault and the struggles of being female in a patriarchal world. However, Swift’s songs can touch anyone’s heart with

their messages of self worth and the excitement of love. Swift is also very public about her romantic history, which can be traced back to her teenage years, and she often writes songs about her past relationships. There is no topic too sensitive, as she sings about her on-again-off-again relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal in “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and the power imbalance of a large age gap in “Dear John”, referencing her relationship with John Mayer. Mayer felt humiliated by the song, saying in an interview with the Rolling Stones that: “I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”

essica Carter Altman is a woman of many talents. You might recognize the shared name with her mother, the famous actress Lynda Carter, but Altman has an interesting career all her own. A lawyer, singer, and avid Wonder Woman fan, Altman first discovered her love for music in elementary school, before going on to study psychology and eventually earning her law degree. Despite first choosing a career in law, Altman never gave up on music – she recorded songs throughout law school, and performed with Lynda Carter at iconic stages such as the Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Altman has now made the transition to full time singer, and part of this inspiration comes from watching her mother perform. Altman reflects on the cycle, saying, “I

remember the first time I got to really see her on stage, and there was just this part of her that came alive. So to have that experience as a young adult, to then getting to actually perform with her on stage, and now, she comes to my shows… it’s so fun to be supported like that by the people you love.”

Altman’s music comes alive all on its own. Her songs range in style from the soft soothing melodies of her For You EP, to the pop and dance filled excitement of her latest single, “Pieces”, the first release from her coming album in the fall. Apart from the passionate sound of the songs themselves, Altman’s music resonates because of the truly meaningful messages they wholeheartedly convey. The songs on For You are cathartic, meant to share the universal experience of grief and loss, but also the peace that can be found. Altman’s song “Lucky One”

is particularly evocative, as she wrote it about her father after his passing, and hoped that it would touch listeners and “remind them of someone in their life.” The theme of Altman’s new album is similarly emotional, but instead focuses on the aftermath of such a major kind of change. Altman describes the music as “touch[ing] on a lot of different points of human connection, relationships, and filled with a lot of hope.” The single “Pieces” is an anthem of that hope, with its joyful beat and powerful message of moving forwards. Altman’s voice shines through her music, and it is impossible for listeners to not be swayed by her candid lyrics and beautiful melodies. Her songs will either leave you with a quiet peace or the urge to dance your way out the door, a gratifying end to such moving music. Her coming album will not be one to miss.

MERGING PASSION WITH A PROFESSION: SOUND TWISTS IN CAREER

s a child, I always knew that I wanted to be a performer…. a Broadway Star, like Bernadette Peters or Bette Midler. I studied voice and acting from the time I was a child and participated in local and regional theatre until I was a teenager, when I started auditioning professionally. At that time, I studied musical theatre more formally and honed my skills as a musician on vocals and percussion. Being a performer was completely my career plan.

Until it wasn’t.

As a musician and performer in regional theatre and television, I was focused on making it my lifetime career despite any uncertainties in the industry. Then, a twist of fate steered me in a different direction - during a voice and diction class in a college theatre program, I was exposed to several different dialects and accents. Learning about the linguistic structure of different accents led to a course on acoustics, which led to a path towards speech pathology and audiology. I continued to audition and perform while pursuing degrees in both disciplines. I became certified in accent acquisition/reduction, a skill that I used both in my own performances and in vocal/speech training for other performers. That kept me in the performance space. Ultimately, however, it was the marriage of acoustics, music and hearing that led me on a path towards a musicbased audiology practice.

In my practice of diagnosing and treating hearing loss, I became interested in the similarities between programming hearing aids and mixing music on a soundboard. The frequency bands in the hearing aid software were reminiscent of faders on the mixing board, and many of

the adjustable parameters translated in both forums. Recognizing this, I looked at the relationship between sound modification, music, speech perception and the brain response. To better understand these relationships, and to fill a void that I felt was left by my graduate education, I became a sound engineer. This allowed me to better understand technology and branch music, sound, audiology and speech communication to help my patients more effectively.

Shortly after, I began incorporating music within my private audiology practice. I use music as a part of my therapeutic methods - treating hearing loss, processing loss and tinnitus. Then, I began to focus on the hearing healthcare needs of the music industry. I provided education to musicians with respect to their exposure to noise/loud music and its potential impact on their hearing function. I performed specialized hearing protection fittings and counseled on healthy hearing practices for professional and avocational musicians.

Eventually, I began speaking on these topics to musicians and industry professionals at trade shows such as NAMM (National

76 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A www.markseidenfeld.com

Association of Music Merchants) and AES (Audio Engineering Society). Now I work with several major manufacturers of musician products to help industry professionals choose the sound best suited for their specific instrument, genre of music, and hearing configuration. I continue to provide support to ensure optimal fit and sound and to confirm that the right steps are being taken for hearing preservation. Since loud noise exposure can still impact both the auditory system and brain processing, even with the use of musician products to aid in protection, I provide follow-up services to monitor function and diagnose or treat any issues that arise. As a tinnitus specialist, I support and treat one of the most handicapping repercussions of loud noise exposure and the paralyzing cousin to hearing loss.

Throughout the years of developing this specialized practice, the term “music audiologist” was developed within the audiology field. I am proud to be one of a handful of practitioners who specialize in the intersection between music, sound and hearing and who handle its impact on the auditory system. The understanding of sound and its relationship to music/speech and brain processing is helpful to treat all types of damage to the auditory system and in keeping the auditory system healthy. Circling my passion into my profession, I am proud to have merged my background in hearing healthcare with my knowledge of sound and music. This has allowed me to provide a more comprehensive treatment service for anyone with damage or a risk of damage to the auditory system. I am wholeheartedly proud to be navigating this field by utilizing my experience as a performer and musician to provide a necessary service to industry professionals.

Despite my pride in my career trajectory, I have not completely lost the desire to perform. On any given weekend, I can be found on one of the small stages in the NY area. The most amazing part about being in New York City is that there are still opportunities for performers while integrating with a career. This allows me the opportunity to continue to participate in her passion of performing and, in doing so, gives me the benefit of that perspective from the hearing healthcare space. This allows me to better support music industry individuals. Creating a profession built from a passion has given me the knowledge and experience from my professional experience while also understanding the point of view of those who are seeking help. The circle created has allowed me a better capacity to provide support and be a hearing healthcare advocate for music industry professionals.

ANNOUNCING THE ARRIVAL OF TAKUMA TANAKA TO

NYC THIS FALL

Artist Takuma Tanaka, a highly acclaimed Japanese artist, is pleased to announce his arrival in New York City. Tanaka is set to showcase his dynamic and multidisciplinary works of art in a series of exhibitions and activations throughout the city, introducing New Yorkers to his unique style, influenced by his Japanese heritage and cultural background and the powerful influence of artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat. Tanaka probes the formal techniques of his predecessors through the lens of a new pandemic-ridden contemporary world. He studied art theory under Blum & Poe's contemporary artist Kenjiro Okazaki who provided foundational discussion and ideas on robotics, landscape design, and architecture. Throughout the artist's twentyyear career, Tanaka has continued to alter his painting techniques by exploring facial structures, portraiture, immersive landscapes, and architectural still-life geometry continuing to create an art world of his own.

Tanaka's artworks are characterized by a blend of traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. His work brings together the ancient techniques of Japanese painting, calligraphy, and painting with digital technology, creating a fusion of the old and new. This diversity of styles and mediums has earned Tanaka many accolades, and his works have been featured in galleries internationally such as The Wall Art Gallery in Miami last December during Art Basel.

"I'm thrilled to bring my artistic vision to New York City," said Tanaka. "The vibrancy of this city and its rich artistic heritage is truly inspiring, and I'm excited to collaborate with local artists and exhibit my work to audiences here."

Tanaka's works will be on display across the city, starting on in September 2023 with a formal presentation at the Salmagundi Art Club, along with pop-up experience with street and local artists. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience his art firsthand and engage with the artist on his unique melding

of traditional and contemporary Japanese art. Meet and greet with artist will commence on September 5th, 2023.

"My interests come from the social sciences. The Human Sushi series is based on humanity and our view of always considering ourselves the masters of the world, maintaining control over everything. We must reflect and be more humble with our world of today.”

The Japanese press has noted Takuma Tanaka as the Jean Michel Basquiat of our time, the artwork is distinct and demonstrates his exceptional talent in capturing the essence of nature, human emotion, and imagination. This will be the first presentation of an international Japanese contemporary artist for the traditional American Salmagundi Club in the Thomas Moran Gallery

ow did you get into Golf?

STEPH MI H

There were several factors that led me to venture into the world of golf. Firstly, my mother, residing in Korea, has an immense passion for the sport and often expressed her enthusiasm during our conversations. Recognizing that there was a disconnect that stemmed from my lack of interest and knowledge of golf, I was motivated to explore the world of golf. Additionally, I noticed a rising surge of interest in golf within the social media community, particularly with a lack of female representation. I identified an opportunity to fill this void and contribute to the golf social media sphere. I then took my platform to create Golf with Mi. I contacted OFTV and managed to pitch an idea for a show that was about real conversations while golfing. I host, produce and edit my show. I have creative control and it's extremely empowering.

What’s the secret to improving your golf game?

Dedicated practice, consistent recording, professional lessons, and engaging in rounds with other golfers are essential components.

As a model, actress and influencer, how important is your diet & exercise routine?

As a model, actress, and influencer, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise routine holds immense importance in my life. Prioritizing my overall health and well-being serves as a fundamental pillar, enabling me to navigate the demands of my profession and achieve optimal performance. By prioritizing self-care and focusing on a healthy lifestyle, I

believe in cultivating the strength and resilience necessary to overcome any challenges that may arise.

Any workout tips for women who would like to have an amazing body?

I appreciate the compliment, but I believe that every woman should strive to feel confident in her own body, embracing her unique beauty. In terms of workout tips, I would suggest prioritizing consistency in your exercise routine, finding a supportive workout partner for motivation and accountability, and ultimately integrating fitness into your lifestyle as a long-term commitment to your health and well-being.

What’s the secret to being an effective influencer?

While I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for being an effective influencer, I have found that continuous creativity, meaningful collaborations, and a keen understanding of

audience preferences are crucial elements. By consistently striving to innovate and provide diverse content that resonates with followers, influencers can cultivate engagement, authenticity, and sustained interest among their audience.

Are there any new projects or passions you care to share with our readers?

I am excited to announce that I have been granted the incredible opportunity to open for San Diego Swim Week, which is a project I am truly looking forward to. This upcoming event holds great significance for me, and I am eagerly anticipating the memorable moments that will unfold.

We’ve featured international health influencer Jen Selter on a previous magazine cover - and the interest was off the charts… why do you think Jen has become such a huge star in the fitness industry?

Are any other fun hobbies besides golf and working out?

In my spare time, I indulge in the creative pursuits of cooking and artistic expression (drawing/ painting/interior decorating). These hobbies offer a delightful balance to my golfing and workout routines, enriching my life with diverse forms of enjoyment and personal fulfillment.

Tell us a little more about your acting and modeling career.

My journey in the realms of acting and modeling started at the age of 14 when I signed representation with a traditional modeling agency. Over the years, I have dedicated myself to honing my skills through acting classes and have had the privilege of being featured in various magazines, print campaigns, commercials and movies. Presently, I have attained a significant milestone by creating a role in my own production golf show, allowing me to showcase the fruits of my labor and take charge of my career trajectory.

Our publisher, Chase Backer, just opened a MedSpa in Palm Beach that specializes in regenerative stem-cell therapy for athletic injuries - any thoughts on stem-cell therapy to heal sports injuries?

I hold a strong belief in the potential of stem cell therapy as a means to facilitate the healing process for sports injuries, as well as various other health-related conditions. I have witnessed firsthand the positive experiences of athlete friends who have chosen this natural approach over invasive surgeries, and their testimonials have reinforced my support for this innovative form of medical treatment. The regenerative properties of stem cell therapy offer promising avenues for optimizing recovery and promoting overall wellbeing in athletes and individuals alike.

LEGENDARY INSTRUCTOR

GARY WIREN

r. Gary Wiren is a PGA Master Professional who was the Director of Education, Learning, and Research for the PGA of America between 1972 and 1985. During that time he produced the entitled "Laws, Principles, and Preferences" of the golf swing. He is the founder of four golf schools and is now the senior director of instruction for Trump Golf Properties. Wiren is a member of both the PGA Hall of Fame and the World Golf Teachers' Hall of Fame. As an author, he has written fourteen golf books including The PGA Teaching Manual, at 619 pages, which is the most comprehensive text on golf instruction in history. It is estimated that over his career he has taught more than a quarter-million students in 30 countries. As one of the world's leading golf experts, Wiren has written more than 300 articles for magazines and other periodicals. Learning about his teaching and writing skills, he was asked the following questions.

What’s the Biggest Challenge in Teaching Golf?

The biggest challenge is to get a clear understanding as to why the pupil plays or wants to play golf, and then work out a program that will direct them toward success. That will include the amount of time and effort they are willing to contribute toward their goal.

Why do you think so many U.S. Presidents love golf?

First of all, with the presidency being such an extremely stressful job the chance to get out on peaceful lawns to engage in an activity that is not too mentally taxing can be therapeutic. It can help one temporarily forget all the demands that come with the position. And since it is an activity that is easy for the Secret Service to handle, they like it too.

Have you played golf with former President Trump?

Yes, most of it was a few years ago. In my estimation, he is the best golfing president we have ever had. I definitely mean that. He loves to compete and returns scores that would be pleasing to a low single-handicap golfer…such as a two or three-handicapper. At his age, he is still playing quite well while using a rotary swing which produces some long drives. Of course, he has some bad days as we all do but his name is up on several championship plaques that line the hallway at the beautiful but tough Trump International Golf Club. He is a very good putter and loves the game.

Who are some of your favorite professional golfers?

As a golf historian, I could go far back and note some great champion golfers, who were also great people Throughout history they seem to have occurred in groups of three, known as a triumvirate. For example, Vardon, Braid, and Taylor; Jones, Sarazen, and Hagen; Snead, Hogan, and Nelson; and the last with which you are more familiar-- Palmer, Player, and Nicklaus. Thinking about your readers I feel they would like to hear more about champions who are familiar to them. “Arnie” brought life back to the game of golf with not only his game but his manner. He may have signed more golf items than anyone in history and always with clear penmanship, not a scribble, so you were darned sure who signed it. Gary Player gave hope to the smaller golfer by producing “Tour level” length that was a result of his great commitment to daily fitness training. But when you say “Jack” when discussing golf there is only one Jack who won more majors than anyone in history— eighteen--and that of course is Jack Nicklaus. He also had an amazing 19 runner-up finishes in the majors. Just imagine that! In addition to his golf prowess Jack and his wife Barbara may have contributed more to charity fundraising efforts for children in need of hospital care than any athlete in history. These three men have made it a privilege for me to be involved in the game of golf.

KNOWS HOW TO HELP YOUR GOLF GAME

We at Metropolitan Palm Beach Magazine were very honored that Jack and Barbara Nicklaus appeared on a previous cover. When you play golf with a legend do you teach them or do they teach you?

Frankly, I don’t play golf with a lot of legends. Yes, I have played with Arnie, Gary, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, and others that are not part of the “Great Triumvirates,” but the play was always just for each other’s enjoyment. There was an occasion, however, when teeing it up with a PGA Golf Hall of Famer and long drive champion, Melvin “Chick” Harbert, that I was offered some advice. It was a tip for playing in the wind. The two of us were at Jupiter Hills CC in Jupiter, FL, on a very windy day. We had reached the 17th tee where there was a bit of a wait with a foursome ahead of us. “Chick,” said, “Would you like a tip for hitting a drive on a windy day?” I certainly wouldn’t pass up on a tip from a “Hall of Famer” so said, “Yes, of

course.” He took his stance and with his driver aiming in one direction said, “When playing into the wind just get comfortable and try to make your very best swing.” Then he reversed his direction and taking his stance said “Now, when you are playing downwind, just get comfortable and try to make your very best swing.” So you see, you can pick up some really solid fundamentals from great players even without asking.

Are there some key tips you would like to share with our readers that could help improve their game?

A tip I share with my students that helps a lot of them once they understand and employ it is this: “YOUR JOB IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS.” You think that as a golfer your job is to hit the ball. That’s not your job! That is the club’s job. Your job is to SWING IT! Let the club hit the ball. I try to teach a “swinging hit” not a

“hitting swing.” I want speed. A “hitting” action tends to produce tension which kills speed and also introduces poor direction. But making a “swinging hit”, with less tension, produces speed that isn’t ruining your direction the way tension does. Practice making a “whoosh,” feeling almost as though you are going to throw the club with the left arm while using rotary speed from the hips to help produce velocity. With the back of the left hand flat the right hand is still slightly cocked and can now be released and rotated without losing speed prior to striking the ball. Think THROUGH THE BALL, NOT TO THE BALL. I speak from experience on this one as at age 47 I won the South Florida Long Drive Championship with a “smash” of 381 yds.1 ft. against a field of 51 other contestants. What added some shock to those who discovered it is that my drive won by 50 yds. over the second place of 330 yds. and I did it with a wooden-headed driver! (That was forty years ago before metal heads appeared.)

Mine was the first shot of the event, so before I swung I said to myself, “Don’t try to hit it too hard. Just make your BEST SWING.”

How important is it to have a good routine?

Speaking of “having a good routine” as just a tip is totally disrespecting its value. A routine is highly important in producing consistency which is one of golf’s great challenges. Developing a pre-shot routine is not a tip--it is a necessity for producing a higher number of good shots. Basically, the routine is composed of what to do and in what order to do it. Here is my pre-shot routine for a full swing. 1. Stand behind the ball to establish the line on which you want the ball to travel to be successful. In my mind, I then visually draw on the ground an easy-to-see orange line from the target to my ball. 2. After that I get into my address position and set my grip for the type of shot I want. 3. Then address the ball to locate the proper distance away, and while doing so I set my shoulders parallel to the line on which I am

going to swing. Next, I cock my wrists until the club is parallel to the ground with the toe of the club pointing up and my left wrist flat so the face is square. That is going to be my clubface position through the whole swing until after contact. I start my weight shift and the rotation of my hips as my arms drop with my right elbow almost touching my right hip (making the swing come from the inside). Finally, I have a visual target about one foot past the ball to help my speed through the ball and avoid releasing too early. You can place a tee or some other marker out there to focus on so that you will consistently hit through the ball, not to the ball.

Any visualization tips?

In one phrase I can summarize this skill: Picture good results. The body doesn’t lie for the brain. Let me give you the greatest example that I can think of. Question: Who has the most holes-in-one in golfing history?

Answer: Texas club professional Mancel Davis has had 51 in his career. WHAT? FIFTY-ONE! How is that possible when no player, major champion or not, is even close? Well, the answer is that Mancel used his own little trick, the only possible explanation for how it was accomplished. Every time he came to a par three hole he pictured the ball going into the cup. That is called positive visualization. But what one should understand is that this tip is useable for more than just holes-in-one. Here is an example of that. I was doing a junior clinic at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi several years ago. To finish off the event I was to go along with the head professional and an assistant to give a three-hole demonstration. The second hole of the demo was an attractive 157-yard par three, and I was to hit first. Selecting a #7 iron I described through my microphone what I pictured. “Ladies and Gentlemen and you great juniors here is a good opportunity to picture your shot being successful. Can you feel a little breeze blowing from the right? It tells me I am going to need to start my shot not at the flag but about five yards to the right and let the wind bring it in.” I then aimed where I said, made a confident swing, saw the ball start exactly where I had aimed, and then watched the wind push it toward the flagstick and right into the cup. It was a good way to make one’s point.

What about putting?

There is golf, and then there is putting. Of course that is part of the game but it is so different mechanically from what the game asks us to do when not on the green. How important is it? Well, the first golf pro ever to write a book on golf was Willie Park, Jr., of Scotland. He won THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP twice while his father won it four times. The title of Willie’s book was THE GAME OF GOLF, written in 1897. In that book is Willie’s quote, “The man who can putt is a match for anyone” (Of course that goes for women as well.). There certainly is no “one way to putt.” A player’s grip for example can be one of many very different choices. But the one element that tends to be universal (with few exceptions) is to keep the hands quiet. It is a stroke, not a hit.

We have finished the 18th hole and Gary invites you to his INSTAGRAM to enjoy a trip through history by a visit to his incredible golf collection which has been visited by his hometown Omaha friend Warren Buffett. Having played the game for 77 years Gary wants me to close this piece by having you recognize golf’s greatest gift-- FRIENDSHIP.

PREVENT THE NEXT CYBERCRIME ATTACK FROM INCLUDING YOU HNWI IN NEW YORK ARE PRIME TARGETS

If you have ever had a moving violation in Suffolk County, Long Island from 2013 to now, your driver’s license has been stolen by hackers. In some cases, your passport was stolen too. Before that, 10 million car VIN numbers were stolen, nationwide. Think about everything the DMV, car dealerships, and TSA know about you. That’s all in the hands of hackers. Getting a duplicate title to your car, and then selling it to themselves, is just one type of trouble hackers can cause.

HNWI and the people in their lives are the prime targets now. Our online COVID lives sped up vulnerability, access, and hacker sophistication by years. Any household staff, vendors, and kids of HNWI are easy ways in.

Not a week goes by anymore without news of a breach containing your personal identifying data, which is all hackers need to socially engineer their way into your accounts, your home, your car, your identity, and your family. Equifax, TikTok, American Airlines, Zelle, PayPal, Hilton Honors, the IRS—you see the news and it sounds like a blur of bad.

How do you make your personally identifying stolen data useless to hackers, so even when they get it, they can’t steal from you or impersonate you? You neutralize it. Make that data no longer linked to your accounts, your online life. Here’s how to shrink your personal attack surface:

Get a Personal Cybercrime Victim Report (PCVR), which investigates all the breached personal data that is sitting out there on you and instructs you how to neutralize it. If you have had any symptoms—scam texts, phone calls, emails, this is highly advisable. A PCVR is the blood test of cybercrime. You need to know exactly what has been breached in order to comprehensively slam all your doors shut in hackers’ faces.

Do not store your passwords or even usernames for any online accounts online. No keychain, no “remember me” on app accounts, no password protector programs. The only place to store passwords is on paper. Remember address books? Get one.

Change your username and password, not just your password, for all online accounts. Choose something random like greenchair53! as your username, and something equally random as your password. It must be something that cannot be linked to you.

1 2 3 4

Log out when you are not using an app. Don’t stay logged into Facebook permanently. That is literally like leaving your house for the weekend with all the window and doors open, no alarm in place, no cameras.

5

Turn off your Bluetooth and AirDrop when you are not using it.

Use your personal hotspot on your phone when you’re at Starbucks, the airport, hotels, or any public place with public wifi. Do not use wifi that is not password protected. Hackers troll public places and with almost no effort get into your phone and your apps via public wifi. Take the sign off your front lawn that tells hackers which home security system is protecting your house. There is no point in security if you tell hackers which system to hack, the instructions for which are also on sale on the Dark Web.

If you use security cameras, hide them, don’t leave them and the connecting wires in plain view.

6 7 8

Turn off the geolocation apps— Google Map, Find My Phone etc.--when you’re not using them. Cyber intel is used for personal attacks.

CATCHING UP WITH NEW YORK METS LEGEND DWIGHT

GOODEN

ou grew up in Tampa, when did you first get interested in baseball?

My dad was a semi-pro coach in baseball so as any kid, I would follow my dad wherever he would go. While watching baseball games on tv with my dad, he would quiz me, "what would you throw here, why would you throw that?," he just knew I was going to be a pitcher and my nephew Gary Sheffield, we were raised in the same house, my sister had him very young. I remember one day him asking me how much I like baseball and I said,"I like it a lot," I was 7-8 years old and every day my dad came home from work, we would go to the park and work on these drills and it wasn't fun because he would take me to the park and you work on all these drills but you do not have

a ball or a glove or bat so it wasn't that much fun I remember telling my mom "Dad's making me go to the park and do all this stuff but we're not throwing a ball we're not hitting a ball and at the time it didn't make sense," but as we got older it started making sense doing the drills we were doing. The one regret I do have was not having a conversation with my dad to find out where he found out his knowledge of baseball because he was well ahead of his time in teaching the game of baseball and when I got older I found out that 35 guys from my little league park all made it to the major leagues. Off my head, you had myself, Gary Sheffield, Carl Everett, Tyrone Griffin, Derek Bell... I got to play in the little league world series in 1975 and I played in the teenage world series in 1979.

You got to the Mets and you are in their minor league system for just 1 year, you flew through the entire system when you were 18.

Yes I think a big part was because of Davey Johnson I was in Kingsport and Davey was a roving instructor with the Mets I remember I was having a bullpen session with Alan Jackson, he was my pitching coach and Davey came over and challenged me, "let's see one down and away, outside to the right-hand hitter," and I'd do that. let me see a curveball I was on that day, and then in '83 he was the triple league manager in Norfolk Virginia, and the tidewater tides and I was at Lynchburg and I was called up by Davey for Triple-A and won two big games for him in the playoffs and the

98 25A Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

triple-A world series and he said, "wherever I manage next year I'm taking you with me." I'm thinking at that time, I'm only 18, that I would at least be in triple-A...He got the big league job while I was in the instructional league and I said to Davey, "you know what you told me," and Davey said, "oh yeah, you're coming." I got invited to spring training as a non-roster player and the press would tell me that I would be sent down to triple-A and I would run into Davey's office like a little kid and he would tell me, "don't worry you are going to make the team." On the last game of spring training, I was ready to go play the Tigers and he said, "congratulations you made the team." I was excited to share that joy with my father. I'll never forget the look on his face because it was initially his dream that became my dream just one of the greatest moments that I ever had.

Your own son Dylan is a linebacker at Maryland.

Very proud -- he played baseball -I enjoy football, but baseball is my love. Football is his game...very proud of him.

What are your thoughts about the possibility of one day getting voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame?

I don't start thinking about it until the votes start coming around. If I look at my numbers I think yeah I deserve to be in there -- if you look at the number of starts I had and quality starts that I had my first five years compared to Koufax's first five years I think I had the numbers there. I do think I belong in there but some people will say "but he had a drug problem and drug addiction." Yes, I did. I cleaned up and at the same time, I don't think I deserve a life sentence for the mistakes I've made in my life. I do think I do belong but I don't have the votes and that's fine I still enjoyed my career because as soon as I made it to the majors I

told my dad I just want to stay a long time and stay healthy I never thought about the awards. I got to win three world series and I got to win just about every award a pitcher can win but to answer the question do I think I belong in the Hall of Fame? Yes, I do believe that. It hasn't happened but maybe one day it will happen. Let's see.

When you were at the top of your game was by far the best - your season in 1985, 244, 1.53 era, over 276 strikeouts, and in one year you had 8 shutouts. Over a 50-game stretch, you won 37 games and had 412 K's and that is considered the greatest 50game stretch in the history of baseball. No pitcher has ever been so dominant

Drugs and alcohol addiction are a disease and I had that. when you mention that 50-game run that I had everything I did after that period was compared to that. I remember having started in 1986 and beating Fernando Valenzuela 3-0 and I only had 4 strikeouts and the first question was, "why did you only have 4 strikeouts?" I just had a complete game shutout against one of the best pitchers in baseball ...but when you have such a career year early on in the start of your career --then anything that followed kind of worked against me as well.

In '86 you were 17-6 in '87 you were 15-7 and then 18-9 and in '89 9-4 in 90, 91 you were 13-7--at your best you were better than anyone else and that might be the strongest case for you--when people saw you pitch they saw an all-time great.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that. The numbers are there and when you mention that and a lot of fans and players in the Hall of Fame mention that, it is good to hear. I had a problem with drugs and alcohol and I'm not justifying anything. I claim all the mistakes I've made in my life but you know I had a disease.

Thank you ...not saying anything bad about the people who are in but I think I've had a better career than some of the people who are in...the world series rings that I've won... but, unfortunately, the writers have a lot of power and nothing against the writers but they have the pull to decide who goes in and who doesn't, but who knows maybe in the future? These days pitchers only go out and pitch 4 or 5 innings and the way the system is now, a lot of today's pitchers are not going to get 200 wins. So, maybe who knows? Maybe down the road, I'll get the opportunity and hopefully, I'll still be around to see it. today I'm healthy. I feel great and I'm clean and sober and that's the thing I'm most proud of. But when the hall of fame ballots do come around, it is something that crosses my mind and sometimes I think about what could I have done differently and I am able to look back and be proud of the things I did accomplish.

New York University, NYU Langone Health, and SOS Children’s Villages Florida.

Marc Leder hosted approximately 200 guests in his home in Boca Raton, Florida for an evening of live entertainment and a black tie optional seated dinner catered by Chef Angelo followed by drinks, desserts, and dancing with DJ Friendly and performances by fire dancer Carla Lulic and award-winning global concert pianist and Broadway performer, Gaynor van Vuuren ~ the Piano Queen™️ with saxophonist Debbie Pierce. Mike McGann, Legends Radio host, captivated the audience as live auctioneer and the evening’s Emcee. Cuba Gooding, Jr. mobilized the audience to raise even more funds with announcements about his new social media startup leveraging Web3 and blockchain technology, Veuit.

Marc Leder stated, “Approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence.” Marc, who is a father of four, spoke eloquently of the negative impact divorce and protracted custody litigation has on the children and how it is often the parent with more money who triumphs in this very expensive process, while the children lose and suffer the most.

A special announcement during the evening shared the exciting news that Will Head, founder of NOOZ, Inc., is donating 25,000 shares of NOOZ to Mommy’s Heart, naming Mommy’s Heart as their exclusive charity of 2023.

Mommy's Heart, Inc. (EIN #87-4833078) provides free legal representation and mental health services to parents and children, who escaped domestic violence but are now facing legal and financial retaliation by their abusers in the family court system. Mommy’s Heart aims to protect and defend the fundamental rights of fit parents to direct the care and custody of their children, so that no parent ever has to fear losing a child for reporting violence.

Thanks to Marc Leder and many generous donors, the Mommy’s Heart team raised significant funds to make the world a brighter place for victims of abuse. Board member Noelle Dunphy said, “Freedom from abuse is a powerful gift.”

Sponsors for the evening included: Candy's Cake Pops, Prezzo, Vesica Vodka, DeLeón Tequila, Sip Channé, Tulipan Bakery, Casa D’Angelo, Gopuff, Total Wine & More, KOPU

LAUNCHED BY JEAN SHAFIROFF FOR THE SOUTHAMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER FOUNDATION GALA AT EL TURCO HAMPTONS

ean Shafiroff is a philanthropist, humanitarian, TV host, writer, and the author of the book "Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give". Jean works extensively as a volunteer fundraiser and leader in the philanthropic world. She serves on the boards of 8 charitable organizations and each year chairs upwards of eight to 9 different charity galas. Among the many causes she champions are those involved in women’s rights, rights of the underserved, health care, and animal welfare.

Jean serves on the boards of the American Humane, Southampton Hospital Association, NYC Mission Society, French Heritage Society, Couture Council of the Museum at FIT, Global Strays, New York Women's Foundation, Casita Maria, and Southampton Animal Shelter

Foundation Honorary Board. A Catholic, she served on the board of the Jewish Board for 28 years and now is one of their honorary trustees.

Friends and supporters of the Foundation and event chair Jean Shafiroff gathered at El Turco Hamptons with Cagri Kanver to celebrate the Summer campaign in support of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF).

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of our donors and volunteers to care for the homeless animals in our community and place them in loving “forever homes.” The number of animals in need of our help is growing every day. The overpopulation of pets on Long Island is a major issue and sadly more amazing animals are ending up

homeless. Whether caring for strays found wandering the streets, rescuing neglected and abandoned animals, or saving dogs from the horrors of the puppy mill industry, the shelter is a safe haven for all animals and for some, the last resort. Without SASF, these animals would not be able to survive. The shelter provides a steppingstone for animals to find loving homes. It offers them housing, food, medical treatment, training, and rehabilitation when necessary.

Notable Attendees included: Jean Shafiroff, Cagri Kanver, Frank Cilione, Jordan Lippner, Nicole Tumilowicz, Dr. Jennifer Jablow, Jessica Mackin, Eugenia Valliades, Fred Devito, Elizabeth Halfpapp, Carmen D'Alessio, Rebecca Seawright, Aisha Christian, Amy Green, Missy Hargraves, Sara Shala, Diana Cochran, Jennifer Allsop, Leesa Rowland, Larry Wohl, Bradford Rand,

The grand soiree will be the highlight of this summer season out east. Chaired by Jean Shafiroff, this year the shelter will honor Mr. Jon Ledecky, Co-Owner of the New York Islanders and Mr. Matt Meeker, CoFounder and CEO of BARK. The annual event is the most important fundraiser for the shelter for over a decade.

The Summer gala will feature cocktails and a delicious, seated dinner, as well as dancing. In addition, a live and silent auction will help raise much-needed funds for the work of the SASF, supporting the more than 5,000 animals who enter our doors each year.

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is supported exclusively by donations and grants from the community. From caring and finding homes for stray and abandoned animals to providing lowcost veterinary care and dog training so that animals can remain in their homes, the shelter has become a vital resource in our community.

‘Cocktails for Canines’

he not-for-profit animal rescue organization, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC (RDRNYC) held their ‘Cocktails for Canines’ annual gala in New York City. The cocktail and dinner reception gala raised funds and awareness to help animals in need and was co-chaired by Georgina Bloomberg and Lara Trump.

The Charity has acquired their own rescue and rehabilitation center in Suffolk County on Long Island giving Rescue Dogs Rock NYC a home to care for dogs in need. This allows the charity to save many more needy and deserving dogs. The center sits on half an acre and allows indoor/ outdoor kennels and has lots of outdoor space.

The development of the center is a project which has been 3 years in the making. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is excited to have come this far. Despite raising $150,000 at the Gala, the charity still anticipates requiring approximately $150,000 to get the rescue center ready, to open it and start taking in dogs.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is a 501(c) (3), volunteer and foster based rescue. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s goal is to raise awareness of the ever-growing plight of homeless animals in the United States, in shelters as well as those abandoned in the streets. There are way too many fantastic animals that are euthanized every day just

because they are homeless. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC introduces these animals to the public and educates them that unwanted companion animals are not damaged goods or unworthy but can be fostered into wonderful family pets. Sadly, the abuse, neglect, cruelty, and medical cases cost shelters the most money, and often are the first animals to euthanized.

The mission of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is the rescue of these animals and provide them with immediate emergency care, medical or otherwise, they need and deserve. Besides medical treatments, the animals are rehabilitated through trainers and behavior specialists to help overcome past trauma. The organization does not have a physical shelter, and relies on a network of volunteers, fosters and adopters to welcome these animals into their homes and provides them with a nurturing and caring environment.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s outreach and education is spread through their website and social media, as well as community events such as their annual gala.

Notable Attendees included: Jackie O’Sullivan, Stacey Silverstein, Georgina Bloomberg, Lara Trump, Jeanine Pirro, Marin Gellar, Olga Ferrara, Tijana Ibrahimovic, Jean Shafiroff, Rita Cosby, Judy Gilbert, Jennifer Martucci, Nicole Tufano, Mrs. Moadelovddian,

120 25A Magazine | metmagny.com

At the Gala there were auction items which guests were able to bid for including a day of beauty at Angelo David Salon, a dinner for four at El Turco Hamptons Restaurant, Tea for Two at Mariebelle New York Cacao Bar, and a dinner for four at Old Stove Pub.

Music at the Gala was donated by Allen Dalton Entertainment Group, a unique entertainment production company specializing in one-of-a-kind acts, music and show-stopping events. We are proud to be a sponsor with World Renowned DJ Superdave spinning all the hits.

Rescue Dogs Rock is led by co- founders Jackie O’Sullivan and Stacey Silverstein. After a highly successful career in sales and marketing, Jackie chose to pursue her

dream of working with and helping animals in need. Working with charities helped her identify where the greatest unserved needs lay and prompted her to start Rescue Dogs Rock New York City.

Stacey is a practicing attorney in New York, who turned her passion of saving homeless animals into co-founding her own not for profit animal rescue called Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. The rescue was founded in 2014 and has saved over 4000 homeless dogs since its inception to date, from across the country. Stacey works tirelessly to help the neediest dogs and gives them a second chance at finding their perfect forever homes.
