July is the month for fireworks, barbecue and the Hamptons! And it’s my favorite time of year. Secret Hideaways On the Gold Coast

uring the glory days of Long Island’s Gold Coast, hundreds of spectacular manor houses were built along its rocky shores. We’ve all read about the wild million-dollar parties, 300-foot yachts and stables big enough to house seventy-two fine show horses. But for all the glitter and glamour of the fabled age, what went completely unrecorded were all the romantic hideaways that could be found in every corner of these vast manicured properties. So where did the landed gentry go to escape the stress of being rich? Having to deal with snotty English butlers, pesky parlor maids, finicky silver polishers and misbehaving horses took its toll. Many ladies of the manor felt the need to get away from the prying eyes of curious servants whose only entertainment was to gossip about the comings and goings of their masters not-so-private lives. Marie Antoinette, first set the tone for shifting gears by running off to her rustic cottage where she frolicked with her pet sheep. The bucolic locale was miles from the oppressive Versailles Palace, with its two hundred rooms.

Here on Long island, some of the estates had up to two thousand acres, where there were dozens of fanciful dwellings to escape to. Many properties had Japanese teahouses, garden follies, lakeside pavilions and sham castles. There were also massive glassed-in palm conservatories with heated indoor pools, waterfalls and hundreds of tropical birds to create an orchestra of sweet chirping sounds. These mini palaces became the site for afternoon entertaining. Butlers would set Victorian-inspired tables with fine china, Tiffany crystal goblets and silver trays filled with madeleines, fruit, custard tarts and puff pastries. Many of the estate kitchens had their own pastry chefs who rose at dawn to create those delicate confections. Alva Vanderbilt made headlines when she built her famous hundredthousand-dollar Japanese tea house at her sprawling estate, Marble House. But as an oversight, she forgot to install electricity and there was no way to make tea. She soon discovered that by the time her footman hiked across the vast property to get to the ornate building, the pot of tea was cold.

Exotic teahouses were all the rage on the North Shore, and Pembroke, Chelsea Manor and Louis C. Tiffany all had authentic ones shipped over from Japan. Back in the twenties, theme parties were so popular, there were entire buildings used to store all the party props, Japanese paper lanterns, lights, decorative trellises and miles of silk flower swags to hang from them. These lavish parties could cost as much as $250,000 to stage. The most famous of these events was hosted by Clarence Mackay in 1924, to honor the Prince of Wales, at a cost of one million dollars. The Lords Of The Manor The menfolk of this golden era had their own hideaways to escape to-smoking lodges, boathouses, detached billiard rooms and shooting galleries. To add a note of intrigue, some had Vegas-style gambling casinos, complete with roulette and blackjack tables, concealed behind hidden bookcases. A few, I am told had a room or two set aside for more kinky pursuits, (I kid you not). These special rooms or sex chambers, like the one in the recent popular movie, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” were complete with whips, chains, bondage toys and mirrored ceilings and god only knows what else. There was also the occasional rumored orgy or two. Years ago, a well-known elegant North Shore hostess shared some shocking stories with me, but made me promise, never to tell a soul…..Okay just a little tidbit. Back in the not-so-distant past, there were non-stop formal balls to attend to. At one such gala, after Peter Duchin’s orchestra packed up their instruments and left for the night, a handful of frisky married couples often played a game called Cinderella’s Slipper. The wives would pull off one of their dancing shoes and hurl them into a pile on the now empty dance floor, then the men would walk over and pick one of the shoes up having no idea whom it belonged to. Its owner would then claim the shoe, regardless of whose

husband it was, and they would go off into one of the fifty rooms and get to know each other better, to put it delicately. I doubt that this unseemly practice goes on today. Mackay’s Moose Clarence Mackay, who owned Harbor Hill, was uninterested in such vulgar pastimes, built his own moose lodge on his 600-acre estate in Roslyn. The private retreat was a handsome Adirondack log-style cabin with a huge stone fireplace surrounded by stuffed deer, elk, tiger and moose trophy heads. Longing to be a big game hunter, Mackay had a complex railroad track built that snaked in and around a pine forest deep in the woods. A real stuffed moose was mounted on the tracks and appeared to run along its length controlled by some hydraulic mechanism as Mackay and his hunting buddies fired at the moose until it was shot to smithereens. It was promptly replaced by another. Blackton’s Boathouse Today seagulls circle and shriek above the gaunt, bleak ruins that rise up from the beach, its lines now obscured by vines and weeds. Two stately pillars, black with decay, lean against the crumbling structure. Leaning against a rotting gatepost is a rusting sign that reads, “Harborwood.” Few people recall the building’s colorful and infamous past. At one time it was known as the world’s largest privately owned boathouse. It was built by the flamboyant movie mogul, J. Stewart Blackton in 1914. In this idyllic waterside setting overlooking Cold Spring Harbor, some of the grandest Hollywood-style parties took place. Everyone from Flo Ziegfeld, along with his sequined and feathered showgirls, and all of café society came by private yachts to dance the night away. 25A and W.C. Fields would climb the marble stairs up to the 100-foot tented ballroom on the second floor. Dozens of high-arched French doors opened out to a wide veranda with sweeping views of Long Island Sound. Inside a forty-piece orchestra would play until the wee hours of the morning. There were endless masquerade balls, and theatrical performances with acrobats, jugglers, roller-skating trick artists, and even Blackton’s pet lion jumping through a flaming hoop. Just below the massive ballroom Blackton’s nearly 200-hundred-foot yacht would glide into a narrow canal and enter a wide cavernous arch, crowned by a marble lion’s head at the center. Once inside a pair of sharp-pointed iron gates would close behind it. Attack dogs, and the pet lion would scare the uninvited away. During the days of Prohibition, the high-speed yacht was used for rum-running bootleg gin across the Sound to Connecticut. After Prohibition ended and talking pictures became the rage, Blackton’s movie empire lost investors and he was forced to sell the property. His lion, Valentino, was sent to the Bronx Zoo. Vanderbilt’s Bachelor Hideaway William K. Vanderbilt built his timbered four-storied hideaway into a cliff along the water’s edge in Centerport. The newly divorced bachelor was free from the prying eyes of servants and staff, and could come and go as he pleased. From his rustic balcony he would spend hours gazing out at his prized possession, The Alva, considered to be one of the most spectacular private yachts registered in the country. The ship was nearly a football field long, and required a crew of 65 to run it. This floating palace was named after William’s castle, Beacon Towers, immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby. The interior of the secluded boathouse had a vaguely medieval quality, with its timbered ceiling and winding carved oak staircase, reminiscent of old 17th-century ships. There was an imported carved fireplace and the walls were covered with fine oil paintings of nautical scenes and sailing memorabilia from his many travels around the world.

Art, after her art collection was rejected by the Metropolitan Museum in New York, built her neo-classical studio where no one could find it. The massive limestone structure is hidden away at the end of a long winding road enshrouded by tall hedgerows and mountain laurel. The Delano and Aldridge buildings are surrounded by an eight-foot brick wall, where it is said that Gertrude often liked to pose nude. She was dedicated to the arts and other gifted souls, often taking in young artists. There is a legend that back in the forties, a young admirer of hers who was staying at the studio, sculpted a nude statue of Gertrude as a kind of valentine pledging his devotion of her. On the day he was to unveil the work, she failed to show up. Dejected, he is said to have climbed the 150-foot water tower on the property and jumped to his death. Locals near the estate claim the water tower, which can be seen for miles around, is haunted by his ghost. Peacock Point’s Casino Peacock Point, a sprawling two-hundred-acre estate, was built by Henry “Truby” Pomeroy Davison Sr. and Dorothy Davison around 1914. High on a bluff in the northern corner of the property stands a unique two-storied latticed and pillared structure known as the casino. The top level was used for dancing on moonlit summer nights, where colorful paper lanterns were strung along the porticoes’ roofline. The brick enclosed lower level housed dozens of cabanas, small sailboats and fishing gear. Mrs. Davison, who lived to be nearly a hundred, was known for her dedicated work with the Red Cross, and for her Sunday croquet lawn parties. Cedarmere William Cullen Bryant built an ornate Gothic art studio along the water’s edge overlooking Roslyn Harbor. The famous writer used it as an escape from the stresses of manor life. To get to it one follows a flower-strewn path, past a swan-filled lake, then a timbered foot bridge that arches over a narrow stream. The outer façade of the charming building is decorated with carved jigsaw and brick-a-brac woodwork. There is also a watermill on the north side of the building that when whirling gives off a sound like a phantom violin.

Mysterious Egyptian Rooms Back in the early twenties after Lord Carnarvon, of Highclear Castle-Downton Abbey fame, and his team made worldwide headlines when they discovered King Tut’s tomb, Egyptian theme parties and decorating styles began to influence the lifestyle here on Long Island. Carnarvon and his crew soon found out that it’s bad karma to mess with Egyptian tombs and their very real curses. He and his team all died under bizarre circumstances within a matter of months. Despite such tragedies, collecting mummies and all things Egyptian became all the rage. Even the Vanderbilts had one on display at their Centerport estate. Stanford White had rows of sarcophagi lining his winding driveway on his North Shore property. There were also a number of fascinating Egyptian-style rooms built in far-off chambers of several local manor houses. At the end of an underground tunnel at Winfield, in Glen Cove, there is rumored to be a replica of the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid in Egypt. Long sealed off by heavy stones, no one has ever been able to get inside.

Winfield’s Teahouse Pavilion Winfield, a classic marble teahouse, still stands at the north end of a formal rose garden. One of the few to survive, it creates a soothing oasis surrounded by ornamental gardens and life-sized statues of Grecian gods and goddesses. During its heyday, on warm summer evenings, music filled the air as classical concerts were often a prelude to elegant late night dinners. As the musicians tuned their strings, guests sat in English Regency or white wicker chairs. To add a touch of whimsy, chandeliers lit with candles were hung from the branches of ancient trees. There were bowers of fragrant lavender, heirloom roses and honeysuckle vines trained to clamber up the walls and pillars. This was the dreamscape of summer life on the Gold Coast. In such a fairytale setting, there is an almost mystical amalgam where the scented garden and music transport you back in time to a world where Fitzgerald wrote in The Great Gatsby: “There was music from my neighbor’s house, where guests came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne.” Oh, if only we could go back there one more time.

Lila Beudert Hamptons Hottest Entrepreneur Goes Global

outh Fork native and entrepreneur, Lila Beudert, brings the art of hair care and affordable glamour to the Hamptons and beyond with her recently launched new concept salon, Blow Beauty Bars, that has been redefining the salon experience. Her vision and philosophy of providing the best customer service and experience has made her Blow Beauty Bars an immediate success, both in Bridgehampton and East Hampton, as well as in her recent expansion into Manhasset, with New Jersey and Europe on the horizon. Inspiring and ebulliently charming, Lila sits down with 25A to candidly speak about her entry into the industry at the young age of 24 and her subsequent rise into the visionary businesswoman she has now become. As a lifelong East Ender, Lila understands the market and spotted a hole in the existing beauty options that seemed overpriced and inconvenient, especially for locals who live there year round without

access to affordable salons. She had seen many blow dry bars popping up in New York City, and at the urging of her fiancĂŠ, decided to delve into this new venture. What especially appealed to Lila was the knowledge that she was contributing to women looking and feeling better about themselves. So in April 2014, she opened up her first location in Bridgehampton, which was an instant success. Embraced by both Manhattanites weekending in the Hamptons, and locals who truly appreciate the taste of affordable luxury, this easy, convenient and fun salon was destined to become a local favorite. Who wouldn't welcome a pristinely furnished modern space where you can walk in, get your tresses styled, and all starting at $40. With an overflowing waitlist and summer quickly approaching, Lila boldly opened up a second location only two months later in East Hampton, confident it would also be well-received. July 2016 | 37

25A An FIT graduate, Lila studied Advertising and Marketing, which led to her work in the hospitality industry as a manager at The Coffee Shop in Union Square, and restaurants such as The Boathouse in East Hampton, and Sag Harbor’s Madison & Main. She cites these diverse experiences as the driving force behind her philosophy of good service and happy clientele. She continually reminds her team to “Be really hospitable first and great hair second. It’s really building relationships with your clients that make them want to come back.” Her hope is that, “When you walk in the door, let go of whatever is bothering you for the day and really just enjoy, have a glass of wine, and be catered to, no matter what is going on and who you are.” At Blow Beauty Bars, all clients are treated equally whether they are there to glam up for a prestigious Hampton's fête or a casual dinner. Lila’s approach is very hands-on; you can often find her at the flagship location where she spends the bulk of her time. She tries to get to the other locations at least once a week and although she oversees all operations, her primary focus is on customer service and assuring that her staff is motivated and her clients satisfied. This is most evidenced by her attention to details that provide an elegant yet comfortable vibe which is instantly realized upon entering the hair salon where you are greeted with a glass of champagne. After having your drink poured, meeting your stylist and selecting your desired look, you are escorted to the back of the salon into a relaxing, private room to have your hair washed. Lila took all the factors she disliked about her own previous salon experiences, such as bright impersonal washing stations and designed a more intimate and relaxing atmosphere. Blow Beauty Bars at first were only designed to specialize exclusively in blowouts. However, the ever-evolving nature of the beauty industry caused Lila to gradually expand her salon’s menu to offer a wider range of services at the request of her clients. Their blowouts focus on the styling aspect, really perfecting your hair, making it look full and lush without using very high heat or hot tools which can be very damaging. The style menu offers six options, based on famed celebrity hair. The signature blowout, called “The Jen,” is based on Jennifer Aniston’s voluminous and iconic style —a casual and effortless look perfect for a dinner or everyday elegance. For those clients looking for more volume and loose cascading curls, “The Kate,” modeled after Kate Hudson, is perfect for any occasion. “The Gwyneth” features a more polished and sleek look, while “The Blake” leaves your tresses looking like you just came from the beach, effortlessly sexy.

25A The updated service menus in all of her Beauty Bars now include cuts and color, as well as makeup. For those experiencing frizzy and untamed hair, especially during the humid summer days, Lila also offers innovative keratin treatment options ranging from a full treatment that lasts up to four months, an express which lasts about four weeks, to the Keratin Shot which can extend the life of your keratin or just give you a few days worth of anti-frizz. The flagship location in Bridgehampton also features nail services and a Bare Wax Bar, as well as eyelash extension services. Lila says, “It should really be a one-stop shop for all hair needs, and now I'm moving into a one-stop shop for all your beauty needs.” You can even purchase products to extend the life of your blowout with her recently launched full-range signature product line. As an inspiring young entrepreneur filled with innovative ideas and grand plans for expansion, the future looks nothing short of promising. Of course no visit would be complete without a taste of the sushi prepared by Chef Boo Lim. Masterful creations such as the Izi Dynamite Roll featuring spicy shrimp, hamachi, tarragon, jalapeno and avocado, or the Californication Roll with crab, shrimp, cucumber, avocado and mango sauce will satisfy your every sushi need. For simple refinement without all the fuss, the Sushi and Sashimi menu will not disappoint. And the six-piece dressed sushi sampler? Yeah, you can plan on ordering that too. After all of that seafood, what more could you ask for? Hmm…some chicken maybe? Izi has it on the menu! Cherry Point Greenpoint's Hottest New Eatery

rooklyn brings you Cherry Point; a tasteful addition to the Greenpoint neighborhood situated on Manhattan Avenue between Bedford and Norman. The 57-seat restaurant is both charming and cozy. Formerly a butcher shop, the restaurant salvages vintage 1930’s architecture with its chestnut and copper bar, open kitchen and brick detailing. Although new, Cherry Point brings a familiar feel to the verdant area.

The menu features house-made charcuterie, a culinary specialty devoted to the preparation of meat, fish and cheeses. Choose from an extensive variety, such as Confit Pork Rillette, Guinea Hen and Mushroom Terrine, expertly prepared and displayed. Indulge yourself in a shareable portion of Steak Tartar made both unique and delicious by candied garlic, seasoned with herbs and accompanied with house-made potato chips. The texture provided by the chips gave welcome variety to this most interesting dish.

Designed by partner, former set designer and art director, Vincent Mazeau. The restaurant’s intimate interior is influenced by the design of a Polish butcher shop, similar to the one that formerly occupied the space. Upon entering the restaurant guests are welcomed by a palette of white, red and oxblood. Vintage tiles, wainscoting and moldings blend seamlessly with vintage white enamel light fixtures sourced from a decommissioned John Deere factory. The room is lined with midcentury maple thonet chairs obtained from the US Naval Academy and features a repurposed deli case used for wine storage and display. Situated directly opposite the open kitchen is a communal chef's table for parties of up to 8 guests, set next to a decorative exposed-brick fireplace.

A fine addition to the entrée portion of the menu is the Grilled Pork Chop accompanied with mild Treviso and black garlic. Add comfort to your entrée with a side of rough-cut steak fries or Grilled Broccolini paired with French sauce gribiche. The Seared Skate Wing was also a table favorite, with its delicate white meat and spring accompaniment of peas, fava beans, spring garlic and morels. Desserts like Lemon Berry Eton Mess and Chocolate Pots de Crème round out the menu.

Start off with a specialty cocktail; the caliber of ingredients brings unique flavor to your cold beverage. We enjoyed the Cherry Point sour, smoked scotch, fresh lemon and a splash of red wine. emons are one of the most popular fruits during the summer months. People love incorporating lemons into food and drink because they are incredibly refreshing and can brighten up any meal, but the lemon offers more than just delicious flavor; it actually has huge health benefits – both internal and external. You’ve probably heard bits and pieces of information on the benefits of lemon juice, but lemons are actually nutritional powerhouses. They are great sources of vitamin C, which has strong immune boosting powers, and can enable healthy digestion. They are also loaded with potassium, magnesium, and copper, and it’s been said they reduce anxiety, fight insomnia, and relieve tension. On the beauty front, the vitamin C in lemons can give us healthy, glowing skin, and also has antibacterial qualities that eliminates blemishes.


With all of these amazing qualities, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t bring lemons into your kitchen, especially if you’re planning on entertaining this summer. Here are a few different ways to incorporate lemon into recipes that are already on the menu for your guests: When dressing a salad, forget the vinegar. Replace it with fresh squeezed lemon juice and mix with extra virgin olive oil. Include generous amounts of seasonings such as cayenne pepper, chopped herbs, sea salt, cilantro, or lemon pepper to enhance the flavor – it’s that easy! Use Meyer lemons if you can find them – they’re a bit sweeter and offer great flavor. Lemon is a go-to seasoning when it comes to preparing fish, so instead of just offering it as a garnish to squeeze on cooked fish, try using lemons when grilling a whole fish, such as a Mediterranean sea bass. It’s a popular way to cook fish in Greece and Italy and is a fabulous way to impress at your next gathering. Using lemon as your main seasoning, add some high quality extra virgin olive oil, coarse sea salt, and fresh herbs like oregano and thyme. Simple and delicious! Pasta is also a perfect vehicle to feature lemons. Start with your favorite pasta, such as orecchiette or farfalle, and combine it with black pepper, broccoli, parmesan, olive oil, and fresh lemon. You can also try cooking up a lemon asparagus risotto – the lemon flavor takes the heavy feel out of eating pasta in the summertime.

When you’re entertaining guests, dessert is a must. Try making your own lemon ice pops or sorbet (you’ll need some pop molds or an ice cream maker); they’re a big crowd pleaser and help beat the summer heat. If you’re feeling adventurous, try making your own lemon meringues or a lemon mousse. We all know how refreshing lemons are when added to beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Make your own lemonade using fresh lemon juice, spring water, and a natural healthy sweetener like agave. It’s easy to do and tastes absolutely fabulous. I also like to offer a variety of fruit infused lemonades to my guests when I entertain. Fresh lemonade is not only delicious, but extremely thirst quenching in the summer. Lemons also make a fantastic base for a cocktail. At my company, Elegant Affairs, one of our most popular cocktails is the Lemon Basil Crush. To make it, we use fresh squeezed lemon juice, spring water, basil, and vodka. It’s light and refreshing and your guests will love it! So go ahead and start using lemon more this summer – the health benefits are tremendous and it’s a wonderful ingredient. Paso Robles California’s Wine Country

he wine region of Paso Robles, located along California’s central coast, is midway between Los Angeles to the south and San Francisco to the north. Paso, as locals call it, was officially designated as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the early 80s, within the same time period that most of the California wine regions were establishing their official designation. However, Paso Robles remained in relative obscurity as the limelight focused more on the wine growing areas to the north. Esotericism has worked in Paso’s favor, allowing the region to move at its own pace and remain true to its farming roots. Today more than 200 wineries dot the landscape, with a majority being boutique, family owned businesses. Approximately 40,000 vineyard acres are producing 46 different varieties, all going into wines of balance and elegance indicative of a world class wine region. Gary Eberle, considered the Godfather of the Paso Robles wine region, grew up in Pennsylvania, and attended Penn State on a football 72 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

scholarship. Upon graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in biology, he attended Louisiana State University (LSU) where he continued his graduate work studying cellular genetics. While attending LSU, Gary developed an appreciation for wine and changed his academic path to become a winemaker. He traveled west to California to study enology at U.C. Davis where he received a degree in Enology and moved to Paso Robles in the early 70s. It was a professor at UC Davis that influenced Gary to look to Paso Robles as the next great growing region of California. By the late 70s Gary secured his fate as a pioneer in Paso Robles Wine Country by purchasing 64 acres and soon releasing his first Cabernet Sauvignon under the Eberle Winery name. Now, over 30 years later, Gary Eberle still greets guests daily with complimentary wine tastings as well as public tours of the winery and underground caves. A stunning vista to the west of the rolling vineyard is a perfect accent to enjoy Eberle’s delicious wines, especially its flagship Cabernet Sauvigon.


Cabernet Sauvignon makes up about 39% of what is planted in Paso Robles. When added up to the other Bordeaux varieties, it is half of what is grown in Paso Robles. However, long before Eberle helped create the Paso Robles AVA, Zinfandel was the grape of dominance. In the 1920s, Italian immigrant families planted vineyards including Dusi, Martinelli, Pesenti and more, many of which are still being farmed and most making up what would be considered old vine Zinfandel. Turley Wine Cellars began in 1993, and because Larry Turley has ‘never met an old vine vineyard he didn’t like,’ they make wines from 35 different vineyards across California, mostly specializing in Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. In Paso Robles, Turley sources from some of the most prestigious old vine plantings that have survived the test of time as dry farmed vineyards. The number one reason for this is the calcareous soil that is so abundant in Paso Robles. This porous, calcium rich rock retains

moisture from the limited rainfall this region receives. Depending on elevation, rainfall can average anywhere between 35 to nine inches per year. Vines struggle to find moisture during the warm days of the growing season, extracting it and a minerality that are unique to Paso. Turley’s winery and tasting room is nestled within the western hills of Paso Robles, surrounded by the ninety three year old Pesenti vineyard. Old vine zin, with a cheese and charcuterrie plate on their veranda is a near perfect Paso Robles experience. As Paso Robles has matured as a wine region, so have its hospitality offerings. Many wineries have diversified their experiences to accommodate a more varied audience. Vina Robles, a Swiss owned all estate winery, opened the region’s first dedicated concert venue adjacent to their hospitality center. This boutique amphitheater opened in 2013 and has attracted world famous acts to entertain the wine country audience. July 2016 | 73

JUSTIN Vineyards and Winery recently renovated their visitor experience, expanding the restaurant to be more inclusive of guests who are not staying in their four room inn. Of course guests staying at The Just Inn have far less to travel after enjoying a dinner on the patio with a bottle of the Justin Isosceles. This Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc first brought notoriety to Paso Robles with its 1997 vintage as number six on the Wine Spectator top 100. Accolades for the wines of Paso Robles did not stop with Justin’s ability to produce a respected vintage. Critical acclaim for the region’s wines has been abundant, yet modest. Further leading to the appeal of this region as, a to be discovered gem for the seasoned wine traveler, or an easy approach for those just discovering wine travel. Summer and fall are a great time to visit. Although warm (yet without humidity), the nights cool off, at times by 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This large diurnal temperature swing is due to Paso Robles’ proximity to the Pacific Ocean. A mountain range stands between Paso and the Pacific, helping to keep the cooling influences at bay until a point in the day that the local climate makes a complete reversal and fog rolls into the coast to create a cooling wind 74 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

that infiltrates the mountains, coming into Paso Robles like nature’s air conditioner. This temperature drop is a unique quality that defines Paso, keeping the wine grapes in balance with bright natural acidity and earthy fruit tannin. These growing conditions also help the emerging olive oil industry in Paso Robles. Olive trees enjoy the same Mediterranean climate as the grape vines of Paso Robles, mirroring the fruit and ripening cycle. Although not locally coordinated, the industry has a few producers who have made a name for themselves. It’s clear that Paso Robles a piece of paradise in California. With their beautiful countryside, hardworking and dedicated residents and a desire to produce the most exquisite wines, the region is no longer the sleepy area it once was. Make a trip out to Paso and you will love it as the locals do!

Summer Snackin’ Great Ways to Eat Healthfully this Season

uring the warm summer months, I commonly get requests for recipes that are cold and refreshing, but also quick and convenient. In hopes to minimize the time you spend in the kitchen so you can have fun in the sun with family and friends, I have assembled a list of fast and easy recipes. Don’t worry; they are still nutritious and delicious! Frozen Almond Butter Banana Pops Ingredients: 4 bananas ¾ cup natural almond butter ½ cup unsweetened almond milk 1 Tbsp. maple syrup Directions: 1) Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until very smooth and creamy.

2) Pour the batter into 8-10 popsicle molds (amount depends on the size of the mold used) and freeze for at least 6 hours, until solid. Frozen Greek Yogurt Trail Mix Bars Ingredients: 2 cups Greek yogurt (*I use 1 cup plain, 1 cup vanilla) 1 cup chopped fruit (*I use sliced bananas and berries) Optional: handful of dark chocolate chips, slivered almonds, dried cranberries, or shredded coconut Directions: 1) Mix all ingredients in a bowl 2) Line a pan with foil 3) Spread yogurt mixture into pan 4) Cover with plastic wrap and place in freezer until frozen 5) Remove from freezer, let thaw for 5 minutes, cut into bars 6) Store in an airtight container in the freezer


Strawberry Coconut Soft Serve Ingredients: 1 cup frozen strawberries ¼ cup raspberries ¼ cup light coconut milk Unsweetened shredded coconut Directions: 1) Combine strawberries, raspberries and coconut milk in a high-powered blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy (several minutes). 2) Scoop soft serve into a bowl and garnish with shredded coconut. Watermelon Mint Smoothie Ingredients: 1½ cup seedless watermelon chunks ¾ cup frozen pineapple ¼ cup coconut water 4 fresh mint leaves Directions: 1) Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Blueberry Yogurt Pops Ingredients: 1½ cups frozen blueberries 1 Tbsp maple syrup

1 Tbsp chia seeds 1½ cups yogurt (plain or vanilla) Optional: ¼ cup unsweetened vanilla protein powder Directions: 1) In a small saucepan, combine frozen blueberries, maple syrup and chia seeds. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring often and smashing berries with a spatula to make a chia jam. 2) Remove from heat, transfer to a bowl and stick mixture in the freezer for 15 minutes to cool. 3) Pour yogurt into a bowl. Mix in protein powder (if using). 4) Add blueberry mixture to the bowl and stir lightly to create a “swirled” look. 5) Gently spoon into popsicle molds and freeze for at least 4 hours. Stefani Markowitz A Woman on a Mission

s president and CEO of New York City’s 5th largest residential brokerage firm, Charles Rutenberg, Stefani Markowitz is no stranger to hard work and dedication. The 28-yearold starts her morning earlier than most millennials at the Tracy Anderson Studio where by 6 am, she is already dancing, high kicking and jumping – getting her blood pumping and ready for her day – which is rarely over before midnight. “When it comes to resources, time is the most priceless because you can’t get it back,” says Stefani. “That’s why I wake up as early as possible, get my heart racing with a hard workout before charging through the day. You could say I’m a woman on a mission – because that’s exactly who I am.” This woman on a mission took the helm of the 100% commission model when she was just 27 years old. She is an active supporter of several philanthropies, including The New York City Rescue Mission, City Harvest and Race for the Cure. On any given night, she attends charity and networking events hosted by organizations including the Young Jewish Professionals (YJP), of which she is a member. By midnight, Stefani does a final check of emails and calls it a day. She may be exhausted, but because she loves what she does, she is ready to do it all over again. Real estate is in her blood, after all. “One of the best things about real estate has been meeting so many interesting people and helping them with a major life decision –finding the place that they call home. I love that I can be a part of that. I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

rt Southampton returns for the 5th year from July 7 through 11, and founder Nick Korniloff brought us up to date on highlights of the fair, held at Nova’s Ark in Bridgehampton. “We have all of the mainstay artists from the Hamptons, De Kooning, Chamberlain, Lichtenstein, Eric Fischl, and so forth, that have worked in the Hamptons for years,” Korniloff says. “It’s a curated show that really matches the overall collector base of very knowledgeable and culturally savvy people that vacation or live in the Hamptons.” Programming continues to remain very strong, he says, with community organizations and cultural institutions, including Southampton Hospital and the Parrish Art Museum among the beneficiaries. There will also be a salute to Hope for Depression, founded by Audrey Gruss on the opening night. Top U.S. and international dealers in 20th and 21st Century art will be exhibiting everything from blue chip to emerging artists, in a 100,000 square foot air-conditioned tent. Benrimon Projects will display work by Academy Award winning actor Adrien Brody. “The exhibition is called “Hooked”, it’s an extension of his work that he’s created around the environment,” Korniloff explained. “He’s a very dedicated visual artist,” he says, adding that Brody’s work is weighed like any other artist’s. “His work holds the wall very well, and it has messaging behind it, solid, strong messaging and a statement from him about society, about culture, about the environment. And that’s what art is all about, it’s supposed to bring out your emotions and creativity, and the work is very good.” Korniloff added that Brody’s work sold very well at other shows he runs. In addition to Art Southampton and Art New York, Korniloff’s firm produces a large group of other art fairs, including Art Miami, Art Wynwood, Context in both Miami and New York, and Art Silicon Valley. he 12th Annual A Hamptons Happening will mark the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation by noted oncologist and cancer researcher Samuel Waxman, MD. The benefit, which takes place on Saturday, July 9th, 2016 at the residence of Maria and Kenneth Fishel, will feature over 30 of the top chefs and restaurants in New York City and the Hamptons. The event will be hosted by CBS 2 News anchor Chris Wragge and will honor Sandra Lee, philanthropist, Emmy winning television personality, New York Times best-selling author and breast cancer survivor; Jayma Cardoso, Founder of the Surf Lodge in Montauk; and Deirdre Quinn, CEO of the luxury fashion company Lafayette 148 New York. This year’s A Hamptons Happening is chaired by event Co-Founders Marion Waxman and Laurie Schaffran and Co-Chair Karen Amster-Young.
