Joy Marks Renaissance Woman By Jennifer Pelaez, Photos by Michael Paniccia

P

hilanthropist, entrepreneur, health-care professional, style icon, former model and soon-to-be author, are just a few of the many roles Joy Marks has successfully taken on along her journey to the top. Glamorous, bold, vibrant and ambitious, she possesses many traits that have garnered her attention and respect of the upper echelon, New Yorkers and Floridians alike. Joy Marks sits down with 25A to dish on her past, present and exciting plans for the next chapter of her ever-evolving adventures. Head-turning and enchanting, Joy Marks attributes much of her success in life on her upbringing and childhood where she learned many of the skills and training that helped her become the woman she is today. Her mother was a Broadway star, professional singer and dancer, while her father established himself as a successful

restaurateur. Together, they encouraged Joy to pursue her passions. Her mother, resolute in molding Joy into the next Shirley Temple, encouraged her to learn the art of performance, matriculating her in professional singing, dancing and elocution classes. At the ripe young age of four, Joy landed her first win in a beauty pageant, setting the stage for her successful future in pageantry and acting. Joy Marks continued her professional training at two very well-known studios in Westchester; however it was also during this early stage in her life that she discovered her strong desire to study medicine. She later went on to obtain advanced degrees in nursing, public health, business and psychology. Her medical training empowered her to become an excellent diagnostician enabling her to even save the lives of her own children when they became seriously ill, as well as her husband who incurred a severe wound that Joy tended to along with the help of an oral surgeon. June 2016 | 33

25A Joy Marks’ thirst for knowledge and new challenges did not stop there; her interest in business and entrepreneurial nature was realized shortly after marriage, when she joined forces with her husband, Alan Marks, to grow and expand his business, Teego Industries, which was later renamed Jomar Industries to reflect the new venture and partnership between the ambitious couple. The company has been operating for over 25 years and has since become a forerunner in the international mail order and manufacturing arena. Joy contributed to the company’s social responsibility and philanthropy through her entrepreneurial vision, altruism and desire to give back to the community to advocate the causes she is most passionate about. Among these, breast cancer awareness, which Joy creatively championed by developing a line of commercial golf products. It was during this time at Jomar Industries that Joy identified her passion and aspiration to become further involved in charity. Today, Joy can often be found not only attending some of the most elegant and exclusive events in New York, the Hamptons and Palm Beach, but also stands as a wellrespected philanthropist, donating and fundraising for a variety of causes and charities such as: the Heart Ball, New York City Mission Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Watermill Center, Central Park Conservancy, Great American Picnic, as well as the arts – the Parrish Art Museum, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater, the Metropolitan Opera, and many others. Joy is also the Ambassador of mrcustommade.com, a lifestyle brand founded by one of her three sons, Adam Marks (the other two are Brian and Jonathan), which sells custom-tailored menswear at affordable prices, exclusively online. Another large portion of her time is dedicated to the art of pastry making with her one-of-a-kind cake creations that are donated to many of the charities she is involved in and events she attends, including those which focus on the welfare and education of children such as the Medical Missions of Children, Children's Home of Poughkeepsie, as well as Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, to name just a few. As the official cake decorator and pastry chef for Old Fashioned Mom Magazine, Joy has become quite the authority in cake decorating. When speaking about her custom works of art, Joy adds, “A cake can be a celebration of life, the highlight of any party, in a sense it is the pièce de résistance.” When not decorating or at charity events, Joy finds happiness spending time with their three racehorses. A true equestrian lover, Joy enjoys Bridgehampton Polo and is a sponsor of the Hampton Classic, which she has been attending over the past twenty years and finds to be one of the best events of the year.

While all her accomplishments and noteworthy contributions in fundraising and other charitable causes have been well received and recognized, it is Joy Marks’ sense of style for which she is most wellknown —bold yet elegant and feminine, she has worn some of the most amazing looks on the social and philanthropic scene. From dramatic headpieces to magnificent gowns, her unique style and ways of accessorizing and styling an outfit are exquisite, most certainly making a statement wherever she goes —a femme fatale with a grace and charm that can hold the attention of many. It is no wonder she has been the exclusive ambassador for Maggie Norris Couture. Featured in magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle and The New York Times Magazine, Maggie Norris Couture creates remarkable designs that are refined, unique and timeless using luxurious fabrics from France with flawless workmanship. Joy first met Maggie fifteen years ago at her Bergdorf Goodman Fashion show and the two quickly developed a relationship. “I had dreamed of one day using Maggie for an entire couture wardrobe. My dream was about to become a reality when at The FIT Couture Council we discussed my first couture ensemble.” And that was the commencement of their bond and kinship, even garnering the attention of famed photographer, Bill Cunningham of The New York Times. When asked to describe Maggie’s style, Joy blithely explains that she is feminine with an air of old-world elegance, “She creates this fantasy and knows how to dress a woman’s body with her beautiful magnificent creations, her corsets, her artistry, her talent, her designs are the epitome of womanhood and amazing couture.”

Joy Marks also attributes her style inspiration to her mother who had a penchant for the movie star look, that old Hollywood Glamour in the ’40s and ’50s which was very feminine, elegant and alluring. “My style icon is Rita Hayworth, and Maggie knew exactly how to achieve it.” Not surprisingly, for 25A’s photo shoot, the looks, from makeup to ensembles, were inspired by Rita Hayworth, in which Maggie was instrumental in creating. A woman of many talents, this Renaissance woman has made her mark in many fields while also looking beautiful. When asked what the future holds, Joy emphasizes that she wants to continue to make an impact and give back in any way that she can. While New York and the Hamptons have been her playground for many years, she is looking to spend more time in Palm Beach, a short drive from where the Marks’ are building a new home. She is especially interested in becoming more involved with the Red Cross and wishes to increase her time and involvement in children’s causes. Soon enough we will all be able to read more about Joy Marks’ experiences with friendship, philanthropy and the vicissitudes of life in her upcoming book, "The Joy Stories," a title her friends created whenever she would tell them of Slip Gown by Maggie Norris Couture an unusual incident or a Heels by Christian Louboutin unique and funny situation. Joy adds, “The stories will touch your heart and it gives you an even deeper look into my life and into the lives of the people I have touched and who have touched me.”

R

emember hearing the ice cream truck coming when you were a kid? Or when your parents would surprise you by taking you out to the ice cream parlor? Ice cream has associations of happiness and excitement and it’s truly become part of our culture. Plus, it’s a fabulous and refreshing treat for the warm days ahead of us. Ice cream sometimes gets a bad rap because people automatically associate it with being unhealthy, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Let me inspire you to make your own ice cream so you can control exactly what goes into it while getting as creative as you want to be!

There’s no reason to be intimidated by the thought of making ice cream; there are so many fantastic ice cream makers out there. Some of my favorite options are the Breville Smart Scoop, the Whynter ICM, and the Cuisinart ICE-21. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can use the whip and fold method with a whisk and a rubber spatula to get the right consistency. You can even make soft serve ice cream with a blender and a loaf pan, so there’s no excuse not to try!

For adults, try a boozy ice cream as a fun dessert option. Flavors can include dark chocolate whiskey and salted caramel, rum coconut cream, or vanilla bean and maple bourbon. Additionally, you can serve up a traditional Italian espresso-based dessert called affogato – just pour a shot of espresso over a heaping scoop of ice cream (and a shot of liqueur for the adults) and serve immediately.

If you’re looking for healthier options to lighten up your ice cream, substitute half and half for low fat milk, coconut milk, or almond milk. Instead of sugar, try using stevia, agave, or fresh fruit to sweeten in a healthier way. But the great part of it all is: you can do whatever you want when you’re making your own ice cream! Use ingredients that appeal to you – from sweet to savory, or both, you can create unique variations you can’t find in stores.

You can incorporate some modern food trends and fun dessert themes as well, like a healthy, dairy-free pistachio avocado ice cream, or a southern blueberry cobbler ice cream. Other unique flavor combinations include chai spice coconut cream, or honey lavender – there’s no limit to what you can create!

When entertaining guests, I like to let them make their own ice cream sandwiches. You can put a variety of items out, like vanilla wafers to go with Creamsicle flavored ice cream, double chocolate chip cookies to pair with black raspberry ice cream, or ginger snaps for green tea or pistachio ice cream. You can also set up your own ice cream sundae bar – incorporate a few different types of ice cream with an array of toppings, including some healthy options like raw almonds and coconut, and carob chips. Your guests will love making their own creations.

If you’re looking to up your presentation game, try purchasing some fun pop molds in large and smaller sizes. There are many creative shapes out there that will delight guests. You can also fill glass votive candle holders with ice cream combinations to pass out when entertaining. There’s a reason “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” still resonates to this day. It’s because nothing screams summer and happiness like ice cream. So try making ice cream yourself and see what amazing creations you can come up with! June 2016 | 45

hamptons restaurant roundup The Hottest Places to Eat this Summer

Y

By W.A. Muller

ears ago the Hamptons was a quiet beach community with a few classic American restaurants. Fast forward to today and the Hamptons has become a mecca for foodies, celebrities, business moguls and socialites flocking to the explosion of trendy and cuisine forward restaurants that have risen the bar in the culinary world for the resort community. Here are a few standouts to check out this summer.

The Beacon A visit to the Hamptons is not complete without a visit to The Beacon. Situated on the Sag Harbor Bay, guests are mesmerized by breathtaking water views, complete with boats gliding by and at the right time of day, a spectacular sunset. Executive Chef Sam McCleland offers a thoughtful, yet unpretentious, menu complete with the region’s best, from both the land and sea. Must-try appetizers include, steamed mussels “Beacon style” with garlic, white wine, lemon-thyme, cream and tomatoes; crispy fish tacos with salsa verde, pepper jack cheese and tomato emulsion; and savory pork belly buns with hoisin BBQ sauce and pineapple slaw served on potato bread. Continue to be impressed with entrees such as the halibut baked in parchment with sun-dried tomatoes, tatsoi and toasted Israeli couscous; a classic pork chop Milanese with frisee, roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, creamy truffle vinaigrette and shaved Parmesan; or the infamous lobster rigatoni with aged cheddar, roasted corn, basil and cream. Finally, no meal is complete without an almond cake with mascarpone cream or a Beacon ice cream sandwich. 8 West Water Street, Sag Harbor, NY, 631.725.7088 beaconsagharbor.com

Fresno Restaurant Located on the edge of the East Hampton Village, Fresno is a local hidden gem serving a simple, yet sophisticated, menu infused with the bounty of the East End. Executive Chef Gretchen Menser serves the traditional comforts of New American cuisine that she -very unapologetically – reinvents and elevates to a higher standard of satisfaction. Start with a simple and flavorful appetizer such as the salmon tartare, prepared with scallion, lime, jalapeño and potato gaufrette; grilled whole prawn on Tuscan toast with upland cress, red onion and radish; or the Fresno antipasti, served with La Quercia prosciutto Americano, saucisson, fresh mozzarella, marinated olives and grilled flatbread, perfect for sharing. Follow with well-executed entrees such as the Cazuela-roasted local cod with maitake, enoki and shiitake mushrooms, bok choy, rice noodles, lemongrass dashi and bean sprout-Thai basil slaw; perfectly grilled tequila-marinated Duroc pork chop with chorizo, queso fresco, corn bread stuffing and a side of jicama-local apple slaw and mole negro; or the linguini with Montauk littleneck clams and Berkshire chorizo in a spicy white wine sauce. Finally, finish with the triple threat - brownie, cookie dough and ganache, accompanied by Tahitian vanilla gelato and caramel sauce, it’s heavenly. 8 Fresno Pl, East Hampton, NY, 631.324.8700 fresnorestaurant.com 46 | 25A

Nick & Toni’s One of the most iconic Hamptons restaurants who began the movement towards fine cuisine on the East End was Nick & Toni’s. Now widely recognized as the most sought-after seat in the Hamptons, Nick & Toni’s offers a Mediterranean inspired menu that is seasonally inspired. The menu regularly features local produce often sourced from the restaurant’s own one acre garden. Highlights on the menu include anything from the restaurant’s woodburning oven. The beautiful mosaic tile covered oven, which also serves as a centerpiece in the dining room, sends out wafting aromas throughout the restaurant. Executed by the culinary team of Executive Chef Joe Realmuto and Chef de Cuisine Bryan Futerman, the menu features a delicious selection of appetizers such as local beet salad with marinated feta, blood orange, arugula and shaved fennel; the decadent prosciutto di San Daniele with ricotta and truffle honey crostini; and perfectly roasted wild mushrooms with shallots, brandy, fresh herbs and Tuscan toast. Several pastas on the menu are house-made including the ricotta gnocchi with morels and local asparagus and the hand-cut fettuccini with rock shrimp scampi. For entrees standouts include the wood oven roasted whole fish, which changes based on local availability; wood grilled painted hills NY strip steak with crispy red onion rings and goat cheese potato gratin; and wood roasted Day-boat fluke with baby carrots, baby zucchini and Calabrian chili and saba. Dessert is certainly not an after thought at Nick & Toni’s as pastry chef Rachel Flatley has some amazing creations for sweet tooths such as the decadent rocky road ice cream cake with wet walnuts, toasted marshmallow and chocolate crunchies and pistachio cake with lemon meringue, strawberries and rhubarb sorbetto. Nick & Toni’s is a dining experience not to miss in the Hamptons. 136 N Main St, East Hampton, NY, 631.324.3550 nickandtonis.com

Navy Beach Despite the miles of beach in the Hamptons, there are limited options for beachfront dining. One of the best spots to dine with your toes in the sand is Navy Beach in Montauk. Poised overlooking Fort Pond Bay, the restaurant is center stage for amazing sunsets to go with your meal. The menu is New American with an emphasis on fresh seafood and local produce. Small plates offer a wide selection of creations such as fresh Montauk fluke ceviche with pickled vegetables, fresh lemon and house-made hot peppers offering a nice touch of spice; for a little Asian flair try the Nikkei tuna crudo with ginger, soy, avocado, shishito, chili and sesame; and for a little more traditional there is the Maryland jumbo lump crab cake with savoy cabbage slaw, chervil and horseradish creole mustard. Large plates also pull several options from the sea including sautéed local skate, citrus frisee, red onion, basil and orange emulsion and the Catalan suquet with monkfish, squid, shrimp, clams, mussels, saffron and almonds. There are also selections for meat lovers including the dry-aged prime NY strip with vine roasted cherry tomatoes, salsa verde and Dario cecchini chianti salt and the delicious signature navy burger with bacon-onion marmalade, Cabot cheddar, house pickles and hand-cut fries. Cocktails are also a centerpiece at Navy Beach with concoctions such as the marganegra with silver tequila, Chambord, raspberries and blackberries and lime or the painkiller with gold rum, coconut, pineapple, OJ and nutmeg. Whatever you choose at Navy Beach be sure to grab a front seat for the memorable sunsets. 16 Navy Road, Montauk, NY, 631.668.6868 navybeach.com June 2016 | 47

EmpireA Carnivore's Steak House Haven

N

By Ryan Wilk

ew York, also known as the Empire State is famous for having some of the best food in the country. It takes a lot for a restaurant to stay in business, especially in New York City where people’s appetites don’t sleep. Founded by the Sinanaj brothers, Empire Steak House has been impressing diners for 25 years. Standing out among the competition, this is the place you’ll want to go to try some of the best steak, seafood and wine in the city. Empire Steak House was founded on a dream the Sinanaj brothers shared of one day starting their own restaurant. Before attempting this journey, they wanted to make sure they were qualified to be the best people to go to for the finest steaks and the freshest seafood around. After working for almost two decades combined between them at Brooklyn's famed Peter Luger Steakhouse, they were ready. The Sinanaj brothers have more than achieved their dream as Empire Steak House continues to impress, providing the Sinanaj brothers everything they wanted in a restaurant. Empire Steak House has two different locations in New York City—the west side, on West 54th Street, and the east side, on East 50th Street. However both are just as luxurious and have the same quality menu. One thing that is of the utmost importance to the staff at both locations is to give their guests an enjoyable and memorable experience. When you walk through the front doors, the first greeting you get will make you feel welcome and

at home. This joyful atmosphere makes it the perfect restaurant for large gatherings and private parties. The food at Empire Steak House is just as inviting. Their most popular steak, the large USDA Prime Dry-Aged Porterhouse, can be ordered to serve two, three or even four diners and comes out cooked to perfection never failing to impress. If just seeing this steak doesn't get you hooked, Empire Steak House is just as knowledgeable in the seafood department. Try their Seared Sesame Tuna, Chilean Sea Bass, or Norwegian Salmon, among many seafood offerings. They also serve Chicken Parmigiana, several pasta dishes with seafood or meat and delicious sides, such as Truffled Mac and Cheese, Asparagus, Mashed or Baked Potatoes, Steamed or Sautéed Spinach, to name a few. There is also an extensive wine list, a variety of single-malt scotch, exotic cocktails, as well as cognacs, brandy and whiskey to pair with your meal. Leave room for dessert, as there are many to choose from, such as an Apple Strudel or Blueberry Peach Cobbler, to a Hot Fudge Sundae “Holy Bull.” Empire Steak House has consistently been on their A-game providing a top-notch dining experience that other restaurants don’t have. empiresteakhousenyc.com

Molyvos Greek at its Best

I

By Christopher A. Pape

n the firmament of New York City Greek restaurants, Molyvos is the brightest. Located in near Times Square in the Theater District, Molyvos is a delicious take on traditional and modern Greek fare, with the freshest seafood selections on offer. And having many a fair share of mediocre and uninspired fish, it was a pleasurable experience to taste the refined and seasonal delicacies, prepared on a nightly basis. A large interior reminiscent of the Greek islands, with their sandy beaches, whitewashed houses, charming villages and clear blue skies, is the theme of Molyvos. Inspired by the traditions and heritage of Greece, Molyvos is named after the seaside village on Levos where the owners, the Livanos family, originate. Executive Chef Carlos Carreto takes guests on a Grecian culinary journey with a variety of appetizers, mezedes, fresh fish, seasonal greens - along with the largest selection of Greek wines in the United States. My guest and I were impressed by the authentic, simple dishes from unfamiliar Greek islands and villages. Starting with varied choices of appetizers, we especially loved the traditional Spanakopita – a spinach pie with Feta cheese. We found the dough to be crisp, without being overcooked and the spinach to be perfectly seasoned without being overbearing. Another favorite was the Ouzo Flamed Haloumi Cheese – very similar to saganaki – it was a melted cheese with a flavorful Greek liqueur, Ouzo. Tangy and pleasantly pungent are the most descriptive adjectives for this addictive dish.

Of course, no Greek restaurant would be worthy of the name without grilled octopus. Here it was served with Santorini fava beens, fresh spring sweet peas, red onions, dill and lemon vinaigrette. The dish perfectly captured Greek seafood and springtime. The springy (in terms of texture) quality of the fava and peas played well with the citrus of the lemon. . I am constantly surprised how Greek chefs can make octopus so tender and Moylvos is no exception. What a a testament to the professionalism of the kitchen! Four our main course, we enjoyed the pan seared day boat sea scallops with a cauliflower puree, pomegranate seeds, over-dried tomatoes and feta. The scallops were cooked to perfection (like pillows of pleasure in our mouths) and we loved the crunchiness of the pomegranate seeds and the mellowness of the cauliflower puree. When you’re in the mood for Greek cuisine, you should look no further than Molyvos. You will love the congenial atmosphere and leave impressed by their quality and freshness of the cooking. I’m sure to hurry back and urge you to take my advice and try it for yourself!

Jue Lan Club Reinvents Modern Chinese By Ryan Wilk If you’re looking for a Chinese restaurant in New York City that breaks away from the average set by other local restaurants, then your search should end at the Jue Lan Club. The Jue Lan Club is a place that puts an emphasis not only on the food, but on art as well. If some of your favorite things are art and Chinese food, then this is definitely a place worth trying out. The Jue Lan Club is an interesting place to enjoy Chinese food because of its unique atmosphere featuring artwork and photographs amid a rich palette of brass, lacquer, royal purple and exposed brick walls and deep green banquets. It features a variety of artists in different mediums whose work is both unconventional and groundbreaking. It is the perfect place to bring a group of people for a big event. The restaurant has a large variety of private dining spaces that will satisfy any occasion. The Jue Lan Club becomes an even more interesting place to visit when you learn about the rich history behind it. The Jue Lan Club was originally the name for a group of unconventional Chinese artists who would secretly meet in the 1930s to avoid the watchful eye of the communist government. The Jue Lan Club restaurant was built in honor of that society and strives to continue to challenge the norm. The Jue Lan Club is the Chinese place for those who don’t like Chinese food, as stated on their website. Restaurant roundup Three Great Manhattan Restaurants

T

By W.A. Muller

his month it's all about the diverse flavors that New York City has to offer. We ventured downtown to explore the melting pot of flavors and cuiisines that make up the fabric of Manhattan. From a throwback to Italian-American to Asian Fusion, there is somthing for everyone, which is a testament to living in the best city in the world!

A great place for simple, authentic upscale Italian food is Il Principe at the Hotel Hugo on Greenwich Street in New York City. A grace of elegance is draped over all of the dishes as the chef uses creative ingredients to turn each dish into a masterpiece. The filet mignon carpaccio is decorated with Castelmagno cheese as well as hazelnut and celery leaves. The food is well complemented with an extensive list of wines and cocktails. 525 Greenwich St, NYC 10013, 212.608.1211 hotelhugony.com

The latest Mediterranean restaurant on the Upper West Side is Bustan- which is the Arabic word for garden or orchard that symbolizes the blossoming culinary diversity of Mediterranean cuisine. As New York represents a multi cultural evolution of different cuisines and flavors, Bustan is a perfect embodiment of the spirit of the neighborhood. The scrumptious Mediterranean menu is inspired by North African specialties such as spiced lamb kebabs, mezzas of hummus, tzatziki, and baba ghanoush, as well as Southern European favorites like taboon charred octopus, ricotta gnocchi, braised short rib and taboon baked branzino. The electrifying dining room with a lapis tiled floor and warmly lit walls feels distinctively Mediterranean setting the perfect stage to explore their epicurean delights. 487 Amsterdam Ave. NYC, 212.595.5050 bustannyc.com

Whether out on a date night or painting the town with friends Natsumi Tapas restaurant, Bar and Lounge is definitely the place to go. Centrally located near the Flatiron District on 3rd Avenue, this Japanese-Italian fusion restaurant offers a menu filled with both cuisines. The modern yet sleek atmosphere helps complete an authentic dining experience. Try standouts like their seafood ceviche with tuna, salmon, super white tuna and Parmesan natsumi dressing or their miso black cod cooked to perfection with sake miso and bonito flakes. and don't forget about their extensive drink menu. 323 3rd Ave, NY 10010, 212.889.2182 natsumitapas.com 54 | 25A

The Malliouhana Perfection in Anguilla By Joe Alexander The Jet Set It’s a quick trip to Anguilla on your G6 or just take Jet Blue to St. Maarten like I did. Be sure and have the Malliouhana’s concierge order a speed boat that’s available steps off the tarmac; it will whisk you to the hotel in under 30 minutes. Riding the waves, with the wind tousling your hair, immediately connects you to island life. As I jumped off the boat and felt the sand between my toes, all my tensions melted away. The porters followed us into the sea with our bags balanced on their heads and a jeep took us to the top of the cliff where the Malliouhana sits in isolated splendor. A series of cathedral like arched rooms, that frame the multiple blue hues of the Caribbean, led us down through two comfortable lounges to the reception desks. Michael J. Fox, Ellen DeGeneres and Shaquille O'Neal are among those who have chosen to stay in one of the hotel’s 55 capacious rooms. Our living room had its own bar and, if you brought the kids, there’s another bedroom available right next door. The bedroom’s décor was a melody of pale blue and crisp white, cozy seating, colorful rugs, vintage photographs and objet d'art. The sleek bathrooms proved big enough for the whole family. We also had two expansive porches to call our own with bright orange hammocks to nap in, a lower terrace which we used to drink champagne on and watch the sun take its last fiery dip into the horizon and a grass lawn that reminded us we weren’t floating on a cloud. This was an elegant, curated and memorable moment. 58 | 25A

Meads Bay After a stylish 20 million dollar renovation, the Malliouhana remains the ne plus ultra of Caribbean hotels. It is perched on a bluff overlooking Meads and Turtle Bays; their two private beaches and an endless turquoise sea in Anguilla. When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt want to relax and get away from the paparazzi, they gather up their kids and head here. Brangelina, Tom Cruise and Kelly Ripa have all called the Malliouhana home at one time or another since it opened in 1984. “We dialed in the spirit of how people in the ’50s and ‘60s traveled – yachts, fine linens and exotic wonderment,” said interior designer Todd-Avery Lenahan, who was selected to redesign this classic grand dame by Auberge Resorts. This group’s five star collection also includes the Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley, the Esperanza in Los Cabos, Nanuku in Fiji and the Jerome in Aspen. Although Anguilla is less flashy then St. Barths, you will still find Leonardo DiCaprio, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Uma Thurman, Derek Jeter and Robert De Niro on one of this islands 33 breathtaking swaths of sand. Recently you could have heard Paul McCartney singing as he strolled around the Malliouhana’s 25 lushly landscaped acres or glimpsed Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep talking shop over dinner in the hotel’s storied restaurant. Although traffic has picked up a tad over the last 10 years, as there are now six traffic lights instead of one, you will experience all the things you would expect in paradise: blue skies, warm waters, cool breezes, tantalizing food and honest hospitality.

Sandy Island Plan your activities in Anguilla ahead of time, because the secret is out the sailing here is yar and the winds are heaven-sent. Rent a catamaran and tell the captain to sail around the island and soak up the scenery. Don’t want to duck when the crew yells fore? Rent a cabin cruiser and go swimming and snorkeling in the picturesque coves and caves. The jagged cliffs turn gold in the sun and the reefs are swarming with fish. Watch the pelicans swoop down to snatch their lunch and, when you’re hungry, tell the captain to put down the anchor at one of the charming water side restraints. Don’t miss Sandy Island; it’s no bigger than a city block and can only be accessed by a boat. Order the crayfish and pretend you’re Robinson Crusoe with waiter service. Not enough? Head Seaside Stables and go horseback riding on the beach. This is no hokey walk around the ring; Tonia will take you out for a two-hour ride as the sun ducks out to China. You can even take the horses into the water. Back at the Malliouhana there are two fresh water infinity pools, one for laps another for lounging with a piña colada as you bask in the sunshine. Dramatic black and white stripped cabanas are poolside for those who prefer the shade. Want privacy? The hotel has its on beach that looks like a fantasy postcard. The pool boy will set up your chaise lounge and bring the hotel’s signature orange towels and a yellow umbrella to nap under as the waves lull you to sleep. Want a drink? He will bring it or there is a cool bar with a nook filled with jungle paintings and banquettes with

the plumpest pillows I’ve ever seen. Want to sight see? Check out the cave paintings where you will see Taino paintings from A.D. 1100-1200. The concierges here are all knowing and they want you to be happy. “Everything is Perfect” The cuisine and wine cellar at the Malliouhana are top drawer and it has been a destination restaurant for over thirty years. Chef Jeremy Bearman has created inventive menus for all times of the day and night including in room dinning. For breakfast, try the bourbon French toast or any of the yummy omelets. Do have a lazy lunch by the pool. I had the list two or three items. Why not have supper on the terrace and enjoy a superior bottle of wine while you watch the sun dip into the ocean. Don’t miss the grilled rock lobster with butternut squash or the oven baked Scottish salmon. All the local fish and produce are exceptional; the meats and other delicacies are flown in from New York every other day. The Malliouhana even has yoga classes or boot camp in the morning to help work off the calories you consumed the night before because the food here is irresistible. The staff at the Malliouhana likes to say, “Everything is perfect.” And I wholeheartedly I agree.

Camperio House An Italian Treasure

M

By Christopher A. Pape

ilan, often referred to as Italy’s industrial capital, is better known for Fashion Week than for its historical references. And, while it might be easier to find the riches of Italy in Rome or Florence, this city is steeped in history if you know where to look. Take, for instance, the Camperio House Suites and Apartments, built from the existing structure of a fifteenth-century palace, which was formerly a convent. This charming residence has been restored to provide luxurious rooms and apartment-style suites in the midst of the cultural, business and fashion center of Milan. The closest metro station to the Camperio is Cairoli, which is less than a two-minute walk away.

60 | 25A

This hotel is characterized by a combination of modern comfort and the traditional elements of Milan, making it a unique accommodation. Milan is known as a world leader in design and it’s evident by this former convent’s age-old stone staircase that welcomes you upon entering, yet it manages to keep an unassuming and discreet entrance from the main street. The rooms, suites and apartments here are a mix of contemporary and antique furnishings with bold wallpaper of rich, vibrant colors. And with just 17 rooms you could say it’s a classic palazzo with a modern twist. It’s in the heart of Milan and while it is not a full-service luxury hotel, this 4-star hotel offers luxe accommodations along with impeccable and friendly hospitality. This

complex provides an in-house laundry service and dry cleaning, massages, limousine and transfer services, and private guarded parking. Start your day with a generous complimentary buffet breakfast where you’ll mingle with other guests. Lunch is served buffet style and a menu is available for dinner. The suites have all the modern conveniences you’d expect from a fine hotel, including free Internet access, flat-screen TVs, premium linens, down comforters and soundproofing to ensure you’ll sleep peacefully, and Nespresso machines to help wake you in the morning. The hotel offers a new concept in hospitality and is the perfect choice for guests who wish to feel they are at a resident’s home in Milan rather than a stay in a hotel. The apartments are divided into Corner, Deluxe, Executive and Classic and designed by the mother/daughter team of Kazuko Hase and Lesley Severgnini. Classic rooms are charming with warm décor and a marble bathroom while the Executive Suites are mini apartments with kitchenettes; but all providing the comforts to make you feel as though you are staying

in a home away from home. It’s perfect for meeting the needs of those looking for a base for a few nights in the heart of Milan. The staff is at your disposal to organize every detail of your stay from personalized room service to reservations for restaurants and ticketed events. There’s also a fitness center to work off all that rich Italian food you’re sure to be consuming during your stay. The Camperio House Suites and Apartments is a short walk from Milan’s beautiful Duomo church, the historic Castle Sforzesco and the Parco Sempione, a favorite spot where you’ll find lots of local culture with residents enjoying neighborhood concerts and picnics. The nearby restaurants, bars and the Piccolo Teatro Grassi theater ensure you’ll always have something to do in the evening hours. camperio.com condenastjohansens.com/camperio June 2016 | 61

Follow Elsa’s tracks across Kenya Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of “Born Free” By Janis Turk It was a roar heard ‘round the world. Fifty years ago, the blockbuster movie “Born Free” opened in theatres, and audiences fell in love with the tender, true story of Elsa, an orphaned lion cub raised, and ultimately released, by a loving couple in the wilderness of Kenya. The $1-million-dollar, 95-minute movie and its romantic theme song touched moviegoers’ hearts and sparked a new movement in wildlife preservation. Starring real-life spouses, British actors Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, Columbia Pictures’ “Born Free” roared through American cinemas in June 1966, winning two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, and a Grammy for best song. Based on the book of the same name, “Born Free” tells the story of George and Joy Adamson, a British game warden in East Africa and his Austrian wife, who rescued three orphaned lion cubs in 1956 and dotingly raised them to adulthood. Two of the lions were eventually taken to a zoo, but the couple kept the smallest, Elsa, and helped train her for release into the wild. After she was set free, Elsa would return to visit the Adamsons as they camped along the Ura River in Meru and even introduced them to 62 | 25A

her first litter of cubs. In 1961, suffering from tick fever, Elsa returned one last time, resting her head in George’s lap as she died. Today’s moviegoers may be too young to remember “Born Free,” but many Baby Boomers do (or at least its theme song). Still, “Born Free” forever changed the world of wildlife conservation and inspired many charitable foundations that, a half-century later, remain committed to that cause. In celebration of its 50th anniversary, fans are planning “Born Free”-themed pilgrimages to its film locations and sites in Kenya where Elsa and the Adamsons lived. Perhaps the most spectacular of these is Elsa’s Kopje, an elegant safari lodge perched high on a rocky hill above the site of George Adamson’s original camp in Meru, where he raised and released orphaned lions long before conservation became fashionable. There in quiet bungalows beneath the Southern Cross, some say that in the distance they can still hear Elsa’s roar. Follow Elsa’s tracks across Kenya, and visit these special “Born Free” spots:

Elsa’s Kopje Meru National Park, Northern Kenya This elegant environmental-award-winning boutique lodge, sculpted into Mughwango Hill in Meru National Park, comprises six large, romantic en-suite cottages, a family cottage, three honeymoon suites, and a private house, featuring spacious bedrooms, open sitting rooms, private decks, modern bathrooms and more, all surrounded by spectacular views. Some even have outdoor baths. Guests at this luxury safari camp enjoy al fresco dining, camp fires and an infinity-edge pool with stunning vistas overlooking land where much of “Born Free” was filmed. Amid 215,000 acres of rugged, unspoiled African grasslands in Meru National Park, where palm trees and baobabs grow amid 13 rivers, stands Elsa’s grave and the site of George’s camp where he lived with the lion stars of “Born Free.” Meru National Park also offers a rhino sanctuary along with more diversity of animal species than any other in East Africa. Elsa’s Kopje has won the Good Safari Guide’s ‘Best Safari Property in Africa’ award, and is considered by many to be one of Africa’s most romantic lodges. Caretakers Charlie and Philip Mason, a British couple with fascinating “Born Free” insights, enjoy sharing with guests their stories and photographs of the Adamsons and their lions. Joy’s Camp Shaba National Park, Northern Kenya An oasis in the arid landscapes of Samburu; Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. With 10 luxury safari tents overlooking a large watering hole, there guests may see lions, zebra,

herds of buffalo, the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, reticulated giraffe, and Grevy’s zebra. “Born Free” fans can enjoy the reception area’s little museum, with photographs, books, movie memorabilia, and Joy’s original artwork. Guests can even see the marker at the site where Joy died. Joy’s Camp is a serene tented camp with modern facilities offering fine dining, a swimming pool and all the comforts of home. Elsamere Lodge Elsamere Conservation Centre, Naivasha, Rift Valley, Kenya Once the Adamsons holiday home, “Elsamere” as Joy named it, is now a unique lodging and animal conservation educational destination on Lake Naivasha, belonging to the Elsa Conservation Trust. With 10 double rooms with en suite baths, Elsamere also features a private verandah facing the lake. Guests enjoy fine meals and traditional high tea, and can watch “The Joy Adamson Story,” documentary, visit its museum, and learn about the Centre’s conservation efforts. For more information on the wonders of Kenya, visit MagicalKenya.org Many charitable foundations were inspired by “Born Free,” including these, which depend on the support of animal lovers everywhere: • The Born Free Foundation bornfree.org.uk • Elsa’s Conservation Trust and the Elsamere Centre for Education in Sustainability elsamere.com • The Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, Texas, a project of the Born Free Foundation’s American arm bornfreeusa.org • The George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust georgeadamson.org June 2016 | 63

A Visit to The Cotswolds Cottages Thatched Roof Heaven By Victoria R. Crosby

L

ast year while visiting London I booked the Secret Cottage Tour in the Cotswolds. After a train ride from Paddington Station, through the lovely countryside to the station at Moreton in Marsh, our group was met at the station by Robin, our tour guide, in two Mercedes minibuses which took seven people in each vehicle, on a tour of many cottages in the picturesque villages of an area of England known as The Cotswold, named for the gently rolling hills. (wolds, is an old English word for hills.) Our first stop was at the thatched roof cottage of Becky Simpson, the owner of the tour with her husband, also called Robin, where we were served a delightful morning repast at 11am,

64 | 25A

known in England as “elevenses.” Tea or coffee served with pastries. We would return later for a buffet lunch of scotch eggs, smoked salmon sandwiches, cheese, pickles and more delicious goodies, then return later again for afternoon tea, with scones, baked daily on Becky’s Aga cooker, with locally made strawberry jam and clotted cream, all served on Spode fine china. Becky and Robin’s home is nearly five hundred years old, and has a quaint winding staircase, three ingelnook fireplaces, which are used to heat the cottage with logs. The kitchen also has a hidden wine cellar.

The surrounding property was filled with an assortment of typical English country garden flowers, a path leading to a gate and a hidden seating area surrounded by hedges. The tour, which is available everyday throughout the year, covers small, picture perfect villages in areas of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, which are inaccessible to tour buses. I grew up in Cheshire , in the North West of England near Wales, and spent many summers at an aunt’s home in Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire. This lovely manor house is now a nursing home, and much of the surrounding land was sold off for housing, but at least it wasn’t torn down like so many of the manor houses and stately homes, both in the UK and the USA. Visiting these many charming and picturesque villages was a treat for all the tourists, who were mostly American with a few Japanese. One stop was to a village church, where a wedding was to take place, and we watched the people as they arrived in their Sunday best. We walked through charming little villages, where all the houses had thatched roofs, even the post office, which also had a gift shop. One village had an old mill, with a stream and a water wheel. Flowers bloomed in every garden, and a few times we’d watch as people on horseback rode by. The British Isles are blessed with many such villages that resemble picture postcards, and are frequently featured in films and television series. So be sure to plan a day in the countryside on your next visit to the UK.

The High Line Hotel Hot Spot for High-End Events

I

By W.A. Muller

n a city with seemingly endless options for high-end event and wedding spaces, it is a breath of fresh air to stumble upon the unassuming 19thcentury High Line Hotel in West Chelsea, set behind a gas-lamp-lined front courtyard and surrounded by tree-lined quiet gardens.

A historic property in a thriving and exciting neighborhood, The High Line Hotel, opened in September 2013, features 60 rooms and suites carved out of the red-brick General Theological Seminary complex, a registered Manhattan landmark on Tenth Avenue at 20th Street. Since its opening, the hotel has quickly become a favorite among travelers to the Big Apple, known for its vintage Americana vibe, Gothic buildings and proximity to the High Line park and hip Chelsea neighborhood. Every room, suite, corridor and public space is furnished with Victorian or Edwardian antiques, period art, Tiffany-style lamps, rewired 1920’s dial telephones and a vast collection of authentic Oriental carpets. While this unique vibe results in coveted rooms that are regularly sold out, the true crown jewel of The High Line Hotel is The Refectory, a 3,300-square-foot cathedral-like, Gothic paneled hall reached by an immense marble staircase. It soars four stories to a gabled gilt roof, complete with minstrels’ gallery and towering windows. It is in this space that phrases like “cookie-cutter” lose their meaning. There is nothing run-of-the-mill about an event in this room. From massively successful events for top brands like Gucci, Vogue, HBO and LVMH, to New York Fashion Week presentations and runway shows by designers such as Mara Hoffman, Opening Ceremony, Monse, and Billy Reid, to confidential A-list weddings, The Refectory has established itself as one of the go-to locations for high-end events in Manhattan. 70 | 25A

The draw of this hotel is not just within its event spaces and well-groomed accommodations, though. The High Line Hotel’s lobby coffee bar, a destination in itself, is the first-ever New York City outpost of the wildly popular Intelligentsia coffee company chain, a cult favorite from Chicago. Locals and guests alike are drawn to the hotel’s front and back courtyards to meet with friends, escape the hustle and bustle of the city, or work with complimentary Wi-Fi. This summer, visitors can flock to the hotel for monthly group bicycle rides in conjunction with Shinola – the Detroit-based company specializing in high-end hand-made goods, including its signature Runwell-model bicycles, of which there are six on-hand at the hotel. The rides begin and end at The High Line Hotel on select summer Friday afternoons from May to September and feature leisurely explorations of Chelsea’s thriving West Side, ending with Shinola Cola refreshments and specialty cocktails. And, following its massive success last summer, Alta Linea, the seasonal outdoor restaurant in the hotel’s front courtyard and garden has just reopened for the warm months, in partnership with renowned beverage expert and restaurateur Joe Campanale. Alta Linea brings back the Italian culture of al fresco drinking and dining to West Chelsea, offering a new food menu from chef Francis Peabody, formerly of dell'anima and Mission Cantina, and a vibrant beverage menu of aperitivi cocktails such as spritzes and negronis (frozen and otherwise), and everyone’s new summer favorite— the frozen sgroppino.

Peter max And His Fantastical Art By Jennifer Pelaez

S

ex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll may have defined the 1960s, but it was also a time of pivotal change both politically and socially - a perfect canvas to usher in creative and visionary artists seeking a medium of expression. New, experimental and distinctive art forms like pop and conceptual art drew increased public attention to artistic expression. One such iconic artist, Peter Max rose to prominence during this time with his psychedelic figures, cosmic creations and vibrant colors which had major influences on this period’s graphic design and print art, designating Peter Max as a significant part of contemporary American culture. A mainstay on the American art scene, Peter Max has turned out thousands of pieces on a variety of surfaces - from conventional canvases, to stages, airplanes and even a Norwegian Cruise Liner; his images have graced album covers, posters and clothing, among many other tangibles. In fact, through his mass media licensing he has become somewhat of a household name. He continues to remain relevant and in high demand decades later due to his ability to live in the moment, to capture what is happening in the world around him at a specific point in time, and translating that into a work of art in his signature bold and spirited style.

From art characterized by dark line work, cosmic innuendos and intense bursts of colors, to more sensuous and painterly pieces, Peter Max’s style evolved throughout the years —from burgeoning pop artist of the 1960s to a master of neo-expressionism. In order to understand his successful career and transition we must first explore Peter’s upbringing and early childhood which was as colorful and thrilling as his paintings. Although born in Berlin, Peter and his family moved to Shanghai shortly thereafter to avoid Nazi persecution. He spent these early developmental years taking in the Eastern culture and fascinating sites —all things which evoked the senses, particularly those which appealed to his auditory and visual ones. His love for color, spirituality and music all began at this young stage and set the foundation for his future works. His early love for comic books and cosmology also hugely influenced his style. The foreshortening of lines, bold colors and the heavy black outline of characters carried into his subsequent works, and while his dreams of becoming an astronomer were never quite realized, they certainly fueled a cherished theme which reoccurs in many of his pieces. When recalling his early years and career, Peter says, “I was always interested in cosmology, I thought I would be an astronomer, and so when I became an artist, that subject always stayed with me.” June 2016 | 73

“It was great, living in the Orient for the first 10 years of my life, was amazing. Back then I didn’t know how amazing it was, but now I know what a tremendous cultural expansion that was.” It was also here in China, where Peter’s father, a reputable businessman, and mother first began to notice his artistic talents. Entertaining their son’s interest, they hired a nanny to conduct art lessons, which proved invaluable to Peter who quickly learned the art of self-expression. His life’s adventure continued on, his family traveling through Tibet, southern Africa, India, Italy, and settling in Israel, exposing Peter to diverse and interesting cultures and languages while he continued to absorb the sounds and sights of these exotic and enchanting –countries—from chanting monks in Tibet to the street vendors in India, Peter was enamored by what he saw, and began delving more seriously into his art. In Israel, his parents continued encouraging his artistic talents by enrolling him to study with Austrian expressionist, Professor Honik, who introduced Peter to the colorful world of Fauvism and the paintings of such famed artists like Matisse and Max Beckmann. He became the professor’s protégé for the next two years and began defining himself as a colorist. This early introduction to the use of pure brilliant color and its aggressive application made an everlasting impression, which later became the cornerstone to his brilliant career. At the age of 16, Peter and his family left Israel to spend a few months in Paris visiting family and friends. Here, Peter took classes at the Louvre and learned about classical art and gained further insight into the fine-art world. He took these lessons with him to New York, his family’s final move, where he found himself a young teenager in a new world. Upon his graduation from Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, Peter studied at the Art Students League of New York and quickly began making money as an artist, eventually enabling him to purchase a five-story brownstone with his friend on East 75th Street, which became the studio from which his colorful cosmic style developed and early posters created. Finding almost overnight success in the design industry, Peter continued to develop his signature style which called upon all his childhood and young adult experiences and interests —comic books, astronomy, eastern yogi philosophy and music, which he expressed through posters, advertising and graphic works. During this time, the print industry was also making major advancements which enabled Peter to create color combinations right on the printing press, and also gave him the ability to turn his original art works into posters that could be easily sold . Peter shares how he became so involved in the printing process, “I got really good at understanding printing, loving to print and I knew culturally how to deal with the printers. It became a very amazing theme to be into printing, every day or two I was there, and this went on for years...I was probably one of the first to be doing it.” And soon enough, Peter’s posters were everywhere -- in dorm rooms, households and offices across America. His images became sought-after by companies across the country landing him on the cover of LIFE Magazine and featured on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show and many others, resulting in innumerable commissions.

As his expressionistic style evolved, becoming more painterly, Peter’s unique symbolism and vibrant color palette continued to appeal to Americans, and in a way, demonstrated his appreciation to the country in which he finally settled down. He has celebrated our nation’s principles of freedom and democracy with his signature subjects —the American flag and Lady Liberty, quintessential American icons of freedom. In fact, one of his best known series, the Statue of Liberty Series, begun in 1976, commemorated America’s Bicentennial. Peter continues to celebrate the Statue annually by painting a new version each Fourth of July. Peter has also painted a fair share of portraits for the rich and famous, from movie stars, to rock stars, to presidents, his world-renowned portraits of cultural icons include figures such as the Dalai Lama, Mick Jagger, Margaret T h a t c h e r, N e l s o n Mandela and most recently, Taylor Swift. Peter has hobnobbed with many legendary stars like the Beatles, and had friendships with numerous presidents, including Ronald Reagan. In recalling his relationship with President Reagan, Peter heartily says, “It was very friendly and fun, I enjoyed who he was, I enjoyed being with him and vice versa. I knew that he was very happy to know me as a friend, so it was really fantastic both ways.” In addition to President Reagan, Peter has painted six other U.S. Presidents - Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George Bush, and of course, his most recent presidential painting, 44 Obamas, which depicted Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States. When asked how he gets his inspiration to create these works he replied, “I think it just came naturally to me, when I got these commissions, I just picked up a pencil or brush and just started doing it.” Peter has also been the official artist for numerous major events, such as the Grammy Awards, the 1994 World Cup and the Super Bowl.

Peter continues to live in New York city, now in a massive 40,000-squarefoot loft on the Upper West Side just across the street from Lincoln Center with over 60 people on staff. He remains constantly active and has stayed in the public eye, using his art to express his creativity while raising awareness on environmental and humanitarian issues, often dedicating paintings and posters for these noteworthy causes. Peter’s art continues to influence today, from designing credit cards (Amex Gift Cards) to Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Limited Edition Set and American Apparel’s NEO MAX designs, a limited edition collection of clothing inspired by Peter’s iconic work that will be released throughout the summer, verifying that Peter Max indeed remains a force to be reckoned with. When asked what he is working on at this moment he answers, “It’s hard to tell you, I come every morning and there are new projects, and I just do it —get myself involved.” And that, he will certainly be doing next month with his latest art show, a retrospective in Nassau County — his first Long Island art gallery show in many years. Peter states,“It is really an accumulation of images over several decades, the best of the best pieces have been selected.” Here, the public will have the opportunity to view and purchase his recent works and meet Peter in an intimate and personal setting. RSVPs are required for Meet the Artist events and art previews begin Saturday, June 18. 25A is proud to announce that we’ll be hosting a VIP Uncrating Party with Peter at LaMantia Gallery on Wednesday, June 22 from 6pm to 8pm. See for yourself that the art of Peter Max is as intriguing and symbolic of the vivacious person he is.

Krista Kim Techism's Break Out Star

A

By W.A Muller

rt is a subjective matter. Whether one likes painting or photography; da Vinci or Picasso, it is a matter of personal taste. What is undeniable is that art has changed with the advent of technology (see photography) and its many advances. One artist on the cutting edge – blurring art and technology into a seductive product – is Krista Kim. A Canadian by birth and a newly arrived New Yorker by choice (by way of Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo), Ms. Kim has been dubbed the Rothko of our time; I was honored to interview her recently. Krista Kim is one of the foremost artists working in the movement of Techism. This relatively new genre of art is dedicated to the marriage of technology and art as a form of expression. With her work, she is leading the next wave of creation, something she refers to as “digital humanism.” Her Digital Color Field project is an ongoing series inspired by the ever-increasing influence that LED devices are having on society. 78 | 25A

We rely on our phones, TVs, computers, tablets and other media devices, and our eyes are constantly exposed to bright LED lights. Krista uses this notion to create conceptual, abstract artworks that are fluid and distinct. Recently relocating her studio to Brooklyn, Krista pushes the boundaries of the digital art-making process. Her work is concerned with the evolution of contemporary art through the rise of digital media and expresses digital consciousness and questions our current aesthetic principles. Her work explores digital technology and its revolutionary effects on human perception, media, social structures and communication. Influenced by artists such as Duchamp and James Turrell, Krista strives to create an experience that is unique for her audience. Her goal as an artist is to communicate complete digital consciousness and to shift viewers to this awareness; she seeks to find the meaning behind our

digital age. Ms. Kim uses a massive database of LED light photography, Photoshop, binary code and dynamic software along with the best digital printers and progressive engineers, in order to produce her distinctive and captivating works of art. After spending her formative time as an artist in Japan, Krista found herself re-creating her experience in the Zen gardens, but with her own work. And it helped that she found the Japanese to respect art in every aspect —in their cuisine, architecture, clothing —art is life and life is art. She was also inspired to take lessons in traditional abstract Japanese painting. From there she evolved to abstract painting and finally to Techism. Ms. Kim’s work has proven that this expressive exploit can be accomplished through digitally enabled artwork. “We are entering an age of digital consciousness, and transcending time, space and reality. For the first time in history, we have developed a new wave of communication, forming our virtual parallel existence.

And I am interested in how this affects our perception of reality,” Krista stated with excitement. She continues, “LED lights are always shining in our retinas, we are always looking at a screen. Instead of believing these lights are a source of distraction, I am driven to create art with them. “Techism is the future, lights are my medium, and innovation needs creativity. I’m helping to create this dialogue as a foundation for other artists to create and be inspired by technology.” As a writer and want-to-be artist, I find inspiration in Krista’s work. She has found something that expresses her joie de vivre and in the process challenges us to think about the boundaries of art. It’s not an understatement to say that she is at the forefront of one of the most exciting genres of art and I wish her the best of luck in all of her endeavors. kristakimstudio.com June 2016 | 79

As he did with ArtHamptons and other fairs across the country, Friedman plans

80 | 25A

once again to set the standard for fairs celebrating the form and function of modern luxury living with Hamptons Contemporary. Explaining his transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional art fair exhibition, Friedman notes, “After I sold the fine art fairs, I realized that I may have been too myopic in defining art as what was on the walls. I realized that it was about beauty meeting inspiration and I took a higher level of abstraction, wherein the canvas is the entire home and the paint is defined as all the elements and product categories that comprise and beautify the home. Hamptons Contemporary showcases that wider vision.” The 40,000 square foot Hamptons Contemporary pavilion will showcase Friedman’s vision indeed, as 160+ exhibitors (http://www. hamptonscontemporary.com/exhibitors) have committed to Hamptons Contemporary. From world recognized architects to celebrated interior decorators, from luxury furniture and appliance manufacturers to one-of-akind design artisans, from state-of-the-art pool and landscape designers to home theater experts, Hamptons Contemporary will celebrate every aspect of luxury home décor and design, both interior and exterior.

Sylvester & Co. will be partnering with Pointed Leaf Press to bring in world renowned authors in design and architecture for very special book signing events that will continue throughout the fair at their booth. Brunch By Design occurs on Sunday, 10am-noon in the ASID North Garden Lounge and is open to VIP cardholders. Mingle with distinguished ASID members, esteemed architects from the AIA, and the leading real estate professionals on the East End. Featured Spotlight Exhibits are 30-minunte interactive sessions, scheduled periodically throughout the weekend, and geared to inform fairgoers on the current state of the industry. Tour Time will be expert-led guided tours that will bring attendees to the most captivating and unique design solutions at the fair. Led by Hamptons savvy ASID members, the tour guides will share their wisdom and insights. During Shop Talk sessions esteemed ASID members discuss, in an informal open round table format, stimulating interior design-oriented topics. From the psychology of color, to preparing for summer guests, the design/decor experts will advise and inspire. These 30-minute sessions will be filled with usable tips and take-away value. Further support for what will undoubtedly prove to be the most celebrated luxury fair in the country is the Lead Media Partnership of Hamptons

Contemporary by Architectural Digest, the iconic Condé Nast publication that defines home décor taste and style worldwide. Joining Architectural Digest as Regional Media Sponsor is HC&G (Hamptons Cottages & Gardens) with other Media Sponsors that include Hamptons Magazine, Beach Magazine, Long Island Pulse, Hamptons.com, Hamptons Beachouse, 25A Magazine, and the soon debuting Shelter-The Hamptons. Official Show Sponsors include Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Sub-Zero/Wolf Appliances, Lynx Grills, and Ciuffo Cabinetry, and Royal Botania. A Room with a View Living on the North Shore

I

By Jody Sokol

f you are from Long Island, you know just how gorgeous a waterfront home on the north shore is. When a couple living in Westbury had the opportunity to make one of these homes their own, they sold their property and began a new chapter of their lives by the beach. The homeowners’ hearts were immediately captured by the million dollar waterfront scenery. They asked Jody to help fulfill their vision of creating a living room space that was worthy of this breathtaking view. Besides the couple’s favorite leather couch, everything in the room was up for redesigning. The fundamental design of the living room was influenced by a paisley fabric that incorporated blue, turquoise, and green colors.

90 | 25A

These vibrant shades would pack a powerful punch. Jody wanted to bring the couple’s waterfront vision to life by bringing the natural beauty of the outdoors into the home. She was able to do this by using sea glass tile that reflected the colors of the water seen from the living room. In addition, the green chair and blue and white striped chair embody the room’s beach theme. You can also see the coffee table has a weathered and distressed finish which mirrors the feel of beach wood. The space is accented with vibrant and bright accessories. Jody introduced a custom bookshelf that creates a more inviting space and a blue rug that beautifully rounds out the room. The couple now has a waterfront oasis to call their own thanks to Jody Sokol Design. 516.790.5265 jody@jodysokol.com jodysokol.com

TRN The Biggest Breakthrough in Personal Training (now in the second month of helping me)

T

By Christopher A. Pape

he “honeymoon” phase is over. I am now in the second month of my wellness regime with TRN and honestly, I’ve never felt better. Scheduling my sessions with William through the TRN app is truly a godsend. With my busy schedule, I don’t have the time or patience to wait and see when I can go to the gym or hope to get on the wait list for a class. With TRN’s flexibility and in-app scheduling, it’s easy to find time twice a week that works for me. 92 | 25A

On the days I don’t have time to commit to the hour session, I get encouraging messages from William on the TRN app that keep my motivation strong and my will to reach my goal alive and thriving. I even started using the exercises he taught me to fit in extra workouts between sessions and can update him or ask questions anytime, anywhere. And William is quick to respond (and most importantly happy to do so)! He is truly a motivational figure and I couldn’t achieve any weight loss without him.

Focusing on strength training and stretching is the most efficient use of our time together; on our off days I walk briskly on the treadmill using intervals to increase my heart rate. Since we began out training together, just about a month ago, I’ve already lost ten pounds and I feel healthier than I have in a long time. In addition to exercising, Brown & Medina Nutrition has been working with me to maintain a diet that I can follow. Whether I’m cooking at home or going out to dinner with friends, I now have a plan of action. The support they give me has been pivotal in helping me overcome my food addiction. And while it’s impossible for me to be perfect all of the time, thanks to them, my relationship with food has changed and I can enjoy a meal that makes

me feel good because it’s good for me. And the most important word that I learned: moderation. I can basically eat anything if it’s smaller portions and I’m not eating to excess. How To Teach Kids Healthy Eating Easy & Effective Tips

T

By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN

eaching kids about nutrition and healthy eating from an early age is very important. In order to nourish their growing minds and bodies, kids should be involved in mealtime from the very start. As a new mother, this topic is one that I am especially passionate about. Parents should not enforce too many food rules or force their children to eat foods that they do not enjoy. Rather, it is a good idea to make eating nutritiously empowering and fun. Here are some of my top suggestions: 1. Empower your little ones with choices. Let your children think that healthy eating is their choice. By allowing your kids to choose whether they would like the broccoli or carrots, they will feel more in control over what is being served. Offer up two equally nutritious choices and allow them to decide which one prevails. 2. Strive for improvement, not perfection. Not every meal is going to be 100% healthy, nor does it need to be! 94 | 25A

Teach your kids to make a few healthy choices at each meal. For example, if they want macaroni and cheese, encourage them to pair it with a vegetable (perhaps raw cucumber slices or roasted string beans) and a little protein as well (perhaps mini meatballs or roasted chicken breasts). 3. Teach about balance. Show your kids that healthy eating does not mean depriving yourself of yummy treats completely. No foods or food groups should be forbidden. Treats should be provided in moderation so that they do not feel like they are missing out on some snack items that their peers are consuming. This is important so that your kids won’t overdo it on junk food when they are away from home. Similarly, find healthy replacements for less healthy foods. For example, try freezing fruity flavors of protein-laden Greek yogurt for a creamy treat that contains much less sugar than traditional frozen desserts.

4. Teach nutrition at home. If your kids do not eat nutritiously inside of the home, it will be more difficult for them to make healthy choices outside of the home. Teach them how to enjoy nutritionally balanced meals by allowing them to get involved in the kitchen when they are home. If they enjoy healthy foods when they are home, they will be more inclined to request similar items when they are dining out. 5. Keep healthy foods on hand. If you want your children to consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, you need to have fruits and vegetables readily available. These particular items should be washed and chopped ahead of time so that your kids will have easy access to them regularly. On the other hand, if junk food is readily available, they will consume these items more consistently as well. 6. Praise healthy choices but don’t nag about unhealthy choices. Let your kids know when you are proud of the healthy choices they are making. This will encourage them to continue to make such choices. Conversely, do

not let them know that you are dissatisfied with the unhealthy choices they are making. Rather than ignoring it completely, encourage them to pair this less healthy food with something a little more nutritious to round out the meal or snack. This way, he/she will still be able to enjoy without overdoing it. ASK DR. CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI, D.O. By Carlos Lacayo

D

r. Calapai returns to answer some of your frequently asked stem cell questions and concerns.

cells need to divide and appear in that tissue to create a better function. A bigger organ would need a larger amount of time to facilitate that repair.

Do you count stem cell dosage? How can you tell how much to use? Due to the rigid trial protocol, we have to document everything we do which includes counting how many cells you get per produce.

Is there a difference between fat stem cells and bone marrow? There is a difference, based upon the clinical trial protocols that we're doing with a very high-speed centrifuge, it seems that we can get more stem cells from bone marrow than from fat. Bone marrow has many excellent cells including platelet rich plasma. Platelet rich plasma has various growth factors in there to help the stem cells.

Is there any way to determine where stem cells are needed most on a patient? How do you make sure they hit their mark? Typically, if a person has arthritis of the joints or the knee and we collectively put all of the stem cells into the knee they'll have very significant repair week to week over the course of months. When we inject stem cell intravenously, they can go to anywhere your body has damage or "distress signals" and set up shop to create repair. How long does it take someone to feel the effects of a stem cell injection? If we inject the joint, most patients will see improvements within a few weeks to a month. Depending upon the severity of the problem or organ, other patients can take a couple of months. It all depends on how many 98 | 25A

I've heard bone marrow extraction can be painful, is that true? No it's not painful. With the technique that I have perfected, I typically clean the skin with an antiseptic; use a very tiny needle to numb the skin, the soft tissues between the skin and the posterior crest of the area. I also use an anesthetic to lay upon the surface of the bone to numb the bone. It then takes 30 seconds to extract bone marrow form that bone. So, it is a relatively pain-free procedure. drcal.net 516.794.0404 1900 Hempstead Turnpike East Meadow, NY 11554, Suite 503

REJUVENATING TRIPS IN 2016 Using Feng Shui Properly

T

By Feng Shui Master Pun-Yin

he Year of the Monkey that we are presently in also contains the theme of “Burning of the Monkey.” This theme is harmful for peace and wealth until February 2017. People who are seeking serenity that leads to clarity must tap into nature at this time. The current Lunar cycle in the state of Yang is full of aggression, distractions and destructions, so those who could be susceptible to the distortions must be smart enough to escape to nature often to heal. The nurturing and calming energy in nature can help release the tension that they may feel. When our body and senses are away from electronics, we can then hear our inner voices and common sense better. The state of oneness with nature that can synchronize our body, mind and spirit is the best defense we have against deception that people often entrap themselves into. To become the best we can be, we need to go back to basics, simplicity and awareness. In the environment the sun can warm our physical state, and the solar energy can dissipate the negative and uncertain energy in people. In particular, for people seeking healing and refreshing, the hours between 5pm and 7pm —the last Rising Sign of the day with the solar energy, is the best time to be in nature or tune into the elements of nature—whether it is a park, landscape garden, plant or flower arrangement. This could help a person unwind from the mind-intensive energy of the day that is part of the state of Yang and transition into the relaxed state of the Yin that would be helpful for more harmonious relationships in their personal life. 102 | 25A

In particular, making regular visits into nature that will enable you to revitalize your senses by flushing out fatigue and bad luck. The healing experience can be created by having the sun penetrate its warmth through your skin, the freshness of the air and breezes caressing you, and finally, taking the breath of life into you. In that moment, you are a complete being where your body, mind and spirit are one. You can feel it in your core, by listening to your body and your soul, so that while you are busy keeping up with the world, you have been blocking out the warning signs and insights. Case in point, those people who were in tune with their core and common sense have already restructured their investment portfolio by the winter. As mentioned in the previous column, the ride throughout this Year of the Monkey will be rough in many ways, therefore, it is critical to have healing routines and a balanced Feng Shui energy environment that can help people reset their mind. After all, we are the product of our environment, we all need a good energy space in order to have clarity. Back to basics, healing through nature and through it, and healing relationships can be the icing on the cake. Having a place that enables your loved ones and dear friends to join you, strengthens the heart connection with them. This is the joy of having, you share your resources with others through a beach house, country escape or outing. Have fun planning your healing trips in 2016! punyin.com

Dr. Keeping David Greuner Your Circulation Healthy

S

By W.A. Muller

ummer is right around the corner and with the heat; a certain anatomical feature gets the spotlight more than others - legs. One subset of the population dreads the heat-induced shorter dresses, skirts and shorts and goes to lengths, pun intended, to avoid showing their legs. Varicose veins are no small matter and for those afflicted by them summer is a very uncomfortable season, both emotionally and physically. Those with bulging or spider veins often find showing their legs in public very difficult. Varicose veins are more than just an aesthetic issue, the bulging veins are actually considered diseased and summer just makes them worse. Compounding the varicose problem, the very heat that makes one want to bare one’s legs actually worsens varicose veins. As Dr. David Greuner, Surgical Director at Vein Centers of NYC Surgical Associates explains. “Varicose veins are caused by venous insufficiency, which means that the

106 | 25A

veins in the leg have trouble sending blood back to the heart. This is because the valves in the leg veins, which normally prevent the blood from flowing backward, are damaged or missing. During the summer the body tries to divert blood flow to the body’s surface as a cooling mechanism; skin is an important organ for temperature regulation. The increased amount of blood in the surface veins can cause them to dilate and swell, which can result in even more pain than normal”. More than 40 million people in the United States suffer from varicose veins, luckily for them there is a solution. Dr. Greuner sat down with Black Market Magazine to go over the nitty gritty of how to get rid of the veins that are not so pretty. The treatment of varicose veins or as doctors call it –varicosity, is one of Dr. Greuner’s offices top procedures. They offer two simple treatment options to patients seeking eliminate their bulging veins. One of them, and the most popular, is a procedure called Endovenous Radiofrequency

Ablation (ERA). Unlike vein stripping, a painful and highly invasive procedure formerly performed to correct varicosity, ERA is minimally invasive and almost painless. A catheter with a special tip is inserted into the diseased vein. Using radio frequency energy, the tip gradually heats the vein to 120 degrees Celsius (248 degrees Fahrenheit), at which point the vein closes down. Blood will then flow through the nearest healthy vein. Additionally, Dr. Greuner reminds patients that each body and anatomy is unique; therefore he and his team will work to create a treatment plan that is suitable for each individual. “Some patients have anatomy more suitable for treatment with a laser, while others are ideal candidates for ERA treatment,” he explains. “My team and I will work to make that determination and develop the plan that is best for you. “ Because only local anesthesia is used, patients can go back to work the same day. Exercise is encouraged right away, and flying is allowed after two

weeks. The only post-treatment requirement is wearing surgical support stockings for two weeks afterward. Greuner stresses that this is not simply a cosmetic procedure, although the cosmetic benefit is considerable. Venous insufficiency causes leg cramping, swelling and fatigue, as well as itching and burning sensations. In addition, the longer the condition is left untreated, the more veins will become diseased, causing the patient to feel worse over time. He urges varicose vein sufferers to consider ERA; “With such a safe and effective treatment available, there is no reason to suffer through another summer."

Arthur Aidala Fox News Legal Commentator

I

By Bennett Marcus

t's been a banner year for attorney Arthur Aidala who just married his law partner Marianne Bertuna at the Plaza hotel in front of his mentor, the legendary lawyer Alan Dershowitz, such pals as Geraldo Riviera and a long list of judges and lawyers he's worked with over the last two and a half decades. You’ve seen Arthur Aidala on television for years, as a longtime legal commentator analyzing complex cases for Fox News, as well as on Court TV, MSNBC, Fox 5, and New York 1. He also appears regularly on The Kelly File with his friend Megyn Kelly. What you may not know is that the man you see on TV is one of New York City’s top criminal defense lawyers, taking on some of the high-profile cases making headlines in recent years. He successfully defended NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, who was falsely accused of sexual misconduct. Another famous case that he won despite long odds was that of Brigitte Harris, who killed her father after he abused her for years, and yet another was the crane operator in the fatal 2008 collapse in Midtown Manhattan. Diverse Practice Aidala doesn’t take on high-profile cases for the notoriety. “I became a lawyer to help people,” Aidala says. In the Brigitte Harris case, he was so moved by her situation, that he not only worked pro bono, but also convinced all the experts who testified to do so unpaid, because she did not have the funds. “The facts of that case were so horrific, and obviously it was very gratifying when we achieved such positive results for her,” Aidala says. “With the exception of time with my family, nothing really is equivalent to that feeling of gratification I get when I help a fellow human being in their most desperate time of need.” Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins In addition to criminal cases, Aidala also works on corporate business deals, putting together, as he describes it, “the guy who sells the tires with the guy who sells the cars.” Partners and associates in his firm, Aidala, Bertuna &

Kamins, are expert in a wide array of legal specialties, including personal injury law, real estate, civil litigation and matrimonial law. The newest addition to the firm, former Supreme Court Judge Barry Kamins, specializes in appellate and attorney disciplinary work, representing lawyers and judges who get into trouble with the bar. “It’s a full-service law firm,” Aidala says. 100th President of the Brooklyn Bar Association Aidala is currently the 100th president of the Brooklyn Bar Association, which has over 2,000 members in every field of law. “I take it very seriously,” says Aidala. He points out that Brooklyn, where he grew up and still lives, has changed tremendously. “I have seen first-hand the renaissance that Brooklyn is experiencing, and the way that Brooklyn has become a shining star in the city. I want the bar association to be a shining star in the citywide legal community.” Under Aidala’s leadership, the association has broken records for fundraising, including some for renovations to the 125-year-old headquarters building. The main boardroom, which hadn’t been touched since 1968, has undergoing a gut renovation, and at the association’s annual judges’ night, U.S. Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito cut the ribbon to unveil the room’s new look. Aidala also serves as an officer of the King’s County Criminal Bar Association. Rafael Ramos Foundation This year Aidala represented Maritza Ramos, the widow of slain Detective Rafael Ramos, as she launched The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation, which she says was a dream come true. “It was an opportunity to help a family who just had the ultimate tragedy do something good for the community.” aidalalaw.com detectiverafaelramos.org brooklynbar.org

Xiomi Frans-Cuber America’s Next Top Model Moves On

O

By Carlos Lacayo

f course you recognize Xiomi Frans-Cuber as one of the dazzling finalist on America’s Next Top Model. The TV personality who has new became a health, beauty and wellness expert with a degree in Communications-Broadcast Journalism from Fairleigh Dickinson University, began her modeling career with Metropolitan Model Management and made it to the semifinals of the Ford Supermodel of the World Competition. After her stint on ANTM, Xiomi signed with New York’s Boss Model Management and has modeled for the likes of Carmen Marc Valvo, Terani Couture, and a host of magazines. Xiomi, pronounced Zee Ohm Mee, chose to put a pause on her successful modeling career to focus on school. After obtaining her degree, the New Jersey native is currently pursuing her Masters’ Degree as a Nurse Practitioner and also works alongside her husband, Dr. Shain Cuber, one of NY/NJ’s busiest plastic surgeons. “I’m almost done with school and then I’ll be working like a real doctor. I still have my own patients now but it’ll be a bit different because I’ll have a little more authority with what I do”, says Frans-Cuber. Xiomi is on a relentless mission to empower women to be their best selves. She states, “I come from a modeling background and every single thing that I have done pertaining to my career has been based on judgment; everywhere I go, I’m being judged, every time I walk into an agency; I’m being judged or measured or weighed. I was OK with it because I have thick skin, but to me, I think, on a much lesser scale, women are being

110 | 25A

judged every day on their outward appearance,” adding, “I know that there are women out there that don’t have as thick of a skin as I do, and may not be in the best mental state in life, because they don’t feel good about themselves.” Frans-Cuber has also just launched a website called Don’t Ever Say Never donteversaynever.com to assist with her mission. “The website is based around me giving advice to women about different things. It incorporates both my clinical and beauty expertise; so you get the health tips and resources, as well as beauty tips, because I have the qualifications,” she adds, “For me, it is important to be authentic because there are some others that claim to be health and beauty experts, but don’t really have the credentials. I’d like to be a resource for these women that wouldn’t go online and search for evidence based research articles, or have the time to read books on health, nutrition, beauty and wellness.” With plans of also starting a skin care line, Xiomi has a clear game plan when it comes to helping women feel good about themselves. “The only opinion that matters is your own and not anyone else’s,” says FransCuber . When asked if she would ever go back to modeling for BOSS Model Management or another agency she exclaims, “I am willing to do it in a much smaller capacity, but modeling will always be there. I’m married now and I have all this other exciting things going on and I want to ride that wave.”

T

By Victoria R. Crosby

he Daughters of the British Empire, (DBE)  in New York State, celebrated the Queen’s 90th Birthday at their annual fundraising luncheon, held at the Cosmopolitan Club and attended by members of all five chapters of DBE in New York City and Long Island, and from New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, along with their friends and spouses. Most ladies wore hats or fascinators. There were many silent auction and raffle items for guests to bid on.

The guest speaker was British author Helen Simonson, who autographed copies of her latest best selling novel, That Summer Before The War. The DBE is a National non-profit organization of women of British birth and heritage, which raises funds for four nursing homes in the US. Jackie's Joke Box Follow Jackie on Twitter for a daily joke! @JackieMartling An old couple’s sitting in the living room. The wife says, “Let’s go upstairs and have sex.” He says, “I-I don't know if I can do both.” Mrs. Schneider takes a final look at her husband just before his wake, and she says to the funeral director, "You know, Alfie looks great, but I-I'm so worried about his toupee sliding down. I know it would just break his heart if his toupee slid down." The funeral director says, "Don't worry about a thing, lady." Two days later, the funeral's over, and Mrs. Schneider says to the funeral director, "Alfie's toupee stayed right in place the whole time. I can't thank you enough. By the way, what'd you do to keep it in place?" He says, "I stapled it on." A guy’s weaving down the road when a cop pulls him over. The cop says, "Hey, pal, did you know your wife fell out a few blocks back?" The guy says, “Thank God. I thought I went deaf." Six guys are carrying a casket out of a church in the middle of winter. The lead guy slips on the ice, and the casket gets away. It goes down the steps, down the road, through an intersection in the middle of town, leaps over a curb, smashes through a drugstore door, slams into the counter, the lid pops up open and the stiff sits up. The druggist says, "Can I help you?" The stiff says, "Yeah. Could you please give me something to stop this coffin?"
