The Acqua Originale Collection by The House of Creed

Asian Green Tea Family: Citrus Rich Born from Olivier’s appreciation of Japanese art and culture of the Far East, this refined citrus juice opens with green, golden notes evoking the landscape of Malaysia, one of his favorite Eastern destinations. The fragrance bows with sparkling bergamot, mandarin and essential oil of lemon petitgrain, then uncovers a fragrant floral bouquet of violet, heliotrope, rose and sweet cassie blended with the region’s ritual –green tea. The finish is a warm melange of amber, sandalwood and musk.

Cedre Blanc Family: Woody Spicy An ode to the intense green accords of the American forests, this juice captures the woodsy floral scents found in the untouched beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia adored by Olivier. Beginning with fragrant laurel, spicy cardamom and bitter galbanum, the scent reveals transparent floral notes of geranium, water lily and jasmine leaving a base of Virginian cedar, vetiver and sandalwood.

Aberdeen Lavander Family: Green Rich A tribute to Creed’s early client and endearing patron, Her Majesty Queen Victoria, whose heart lay always in the Highlands of Scotland. Olivier created this oriental fougére as a historical nod to the Creed archives and the Queen’s beloved picturesque retreat north. Mysterious aniseflavored absinthe, rosemary, bergamot and lemon give way to a bouquet of annual lavender – flowering in the same year in which it is sown, sumptuous tuberose, iris and full rose. Dark, dry patchouli, smoky leather and vetiver complete the

Vetiver Geranium Family: Woody Spicy The Island of Java, Olivier’s favorite destination east of Bali and just south of the equator, served as inspiration for this aromatic adventure. The accord brings to life Indonesian vetiver that adorns the mountainous rolling hills of its native landscape and pairs the sensual, soothing essence of geranium to create a vibrant juice. Handpicked crisp granny smith apple, bergamot and lemon make a luminous debut, while warm cinnamon and rose lead to hearty patchouli, cedar and relaxing amber.

Iris Tubereuse Family: Floral Rich A shimmering white floral that combines the romance of Tuscany and the exotic allure of India – bringing together two of Olivier’s favorite places in one luxurious juice. Delicate iris – one of the most expensive raw materials gathered from the root, fresh galbanum, tender green violet leaf and orange open the scent. Indian tuberose – the finest in the world collected by moonlight, follows with ylang ylang and lily of the valley to create an unforgettable bouquet of scent. Sicilian orange blossom, musk and Mexican vanilla orchid create the sensual dry down.

Green Irish Tweed As classic as a perfectly tailored tuxedo on the silver screen, Green Irish Tweed is loyally worn by today’s Hollywood leading men who ask for it by name. A film colony legend like the stars who wear it, GREEN IRISH TWEED has an invigorating freshness and pure masculinity that have made it not only one of the most artistic fragrances from sixth-generation master perfumer Olivier Creed, but also one of the Parisian perfume house’s bestselling. Rich, green, spicy and sporty—to wear this crisp scent is to be unforgettable.

A spirited new fragrance by Hanae Mori Drawing inspiration from designer Hanae Mori’s very own name—tiny flower in the forest, brilliant and beautiful—Hanae embodies the spirited youth of the fashion icon herself across Tokyo, New York and Paris. The scent blends a bouquet of pretty blooms of Sicilian bergamot, orange blossom and Madagascar jasmine—invoking the verdant Japanese valleys of Hanae Mori’s childhood. Hanae Eau de Parfum is available at select retailers andwww.hanaemoriparfums.com

A sophisticated oceanic-inspired scent Created from more than 50 essences, HM, Hanae Mori’s first fragrance for men, was a collaborative creative effort with her two sons, Akira and Kei, for its debut in 1998. This powerful universal scent, inspired by the sea, embodies the contrast of the Eastern seas – both great in power with calm grace. At first spritz, you experience effervescent citrus and spearmint combined with sun-basked blooms, while woodsy warmth and smooth sandalwood anchor this dynamic blend. The result is pure sophistication—a portrait of refined power by Madame Mori’s skillful hand.

The spirit of ad venture A magnetic scent that befits jacket-required invitations—HiM debuted in 2012 as Hanae Mori’s second fragrance for discerning men. Hand-carved from her childhood landscape, HiM bottles the black pine-dotted forests of the southern Japanese landscape and captures the essence of adventure, wisdom and romance through an aromatic voyage. HiM is a woodsy, spicy, fresh juice that brings to life the masculine mix of East meets West coupled with the novelty of adventure. The scent opens to a majestic grove of white cedar, teak and fir trees layered with Tonka bean, cardamom, cinnamon and rich Mediterranean fig. Then bursts of bergamot and mandarin are punctuated by grey pepper for a sensual finish. The bottle evokes the intricacy of grained wood complete with a samurai handle-inspired topper—the ultimate symbol of pure masculinity.

Elegance, freshness, a captivating charm and a couture spirit in an Eau de Toilette expressing the radiant energy of the fashion of Guillaume Henry, the talented artistic director who brought back to life the Carven House. Carven L’eau de toilette is a pure ode to freshness and femininity against a backdrop of creamy softness. This exquisite fragrance is created by Francis Kurkdjian, one of the most talented perfumers of his generation. After the creation of Carven Le Parfum, he definetly wanted to be part of the newt steps of the adventure.

PRIVATE JET

IT’S NOT JUST FOR CELEBRITIES By Dan Kahn, VP Charter Sales, ExcelAire ou’ve probably seen photos of celebrities, royalty or business moguls descending the steps of a sleek private jet as they travel the world for important engagements and thought it was out of reach. I’m often asked, is it really expensive to travel via private jet, as it all looks so exclusive. In fact, most people have never considered traveling by private jet for their business meetings or family vacations. Why not? Many people don’t realize that the convenience, comfort and reliability of private jets actually make them a very sensible travel option for business and leisure travelers alike. Here are five reasons to consider traveling by private jet that just may change your mind (not to mention the plans for your next trip)—as well as what makes Long Island-based ExcelAire stand out as the private jet provider of choice for celebrities, business 36

people, and more for travel around the U.S. and around the world. * Travel on your schedule—not the airlines’—and make the most of your travel time. Private jets do what big commercial airlines simply cannot—fly business and leisure travelers to multiple destinations, at convenient airports, on schedules that work for you. Imagine being able to skip the long check-in and security lines, crowded airports, flight delays, misplaced luggage and poor service. Instead, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your flight crew who look forward to flying you and your colleagues, friends or family members to the destinations you want to go to, when you want to go.

WHY TRAVEL BY PRIVATE JET? Best of all, your trip starts as soon as you board the plane. Business travelers use the quiet environment of the private jet as an extension of their own office, staying productive by catching up on work or even conducting in-flight meetings. And when the trip is for fun, your vacation starts the minute you arrive at the airport, with personalized catering, inflight entertainment and luxurious, state-of-the-art airplanes. The bottom line is, when traveling by private jet, you’re a valued guest— not just one more of millions and millions of travelers trying to make connections, find their bags and navigate crowded, congested airports. * Make private jet travel cost-effective by chartering. Without a doubt, charter is the least expensive way to travel by private jet. Unlike jet cards or fractional ownership, which require you to invest massive amounts of cash, chartering is a pay-as-you-go system. You also save money by taking the right type of jet for each trip, based on the length, number of seats needed, and more. So instead of being tied to a specific aircraft, you have the flexibility to choose a smaller jet for a quick flight to Chicago or a larger jet for a family vacation to Belize. * Safety ratings, experience and maintenance all matter when selecting a private jet provider. All private jet operators are not created equal, so it’s important to look beyond the glossy brochures and promises of low prices. If at all possible, visit the private jet operator you’re considering to meet their key personnel. Safety is the most important consideration, so ask for the operator’s thirdparty safety audit ratings (Wyvern and ARG/US). Find out how long they’ve been in business, as well as how long their pilots have been flying with them and their level of experience with flying the aircraft you’re chartering. Finally, ask whether they perform their own maintenance or farm it out to outside vendors. ExcelAire has the highest ratings for Wyvern and ARG/

US, recognition of our commitment to safety. Above all, make sure you feel comfortable with what you see and hear. A private jet provider should be a trusted member of your team, and the right one will be glad to share their qualifications and earn your trust. * ExcelAire is committed to what matters most in private jet travel— safety and service. With the most experience of any private jet operator in the area, we earned a reputation for a strong commitment to safety as well as providing outstanding, first-class service, and will soon celebrate our 30th anniversary in the aviation business. With a legacy as an aircraft maintenance provider since 1985, the company is dedicated to providing clients with exceedingly well-maintained aircraft. ExcelAire jets are flown by the best-qualified pilots in the business, who understand and share the same commitment to safety and reliability. ExcelAire has more than 150 aviation professionals dedicated to ensuring that every trip exceeds even the highest expectations—and keeps customers looking forward to the next journey. Based in 200,000 square feet of office and hangar space at Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP), ExcelAire has the largest fleet of Legacy jets dedicated to charter on the East Coast. Are you ready to experience the luxury, reliability and productivity of private jet travel? Before you book your next business trip or family vacation, I invite you to explore the many benefits of traveling by private jet by emailing me at dank@excelaire.com or calling 1-800-EXCELAIRE for prompt, personal responses to your questions about how to get started traveling by private jet, as well as the opportunity to schedule a time to come visit our hangar and see our jets in person. It just may change the way you look at travel—and how much you look forward to it. 37

t’s going to happen. That first canister of cookies arrives at your office or front door, triggering what seems to be a tidal wave of hyper-caloric gift baskets from friends, family and clients. They taunt you from the conference room and kitchen. This, in addition to holiday parties, shopping and decorating can bring a tremendous amount of pressure on us both physically and mentally. Don’t worry, all is not lost. There are many ways to stay healthy and overcome the stress of the season. Regardless of faith, the holiday season is a time to share and celebrate with friends and family. Leaving many of us remorseful over what may seem like over-indulgence. The good news is, it’s probably not as bad as you think. My mother always taught me that when it comes to health, every little bit counts. This common sense approach to everyday living provides us with a simple road map to guide us. For example, shopping at the mall can be a daunting task during the holiday season. An easy way to burn some extra calories and clear your head is to park a bit further away from the entrance, simultaneously avoiding the fight for the closest spot and improving your cardiovascular health. We all know that the excitement of the holidays can flatline our motivation to workout. This is the time to spice up our regular exercise routines. When leaving the house to go to the gym seems out of the question, the “living room workout” can be a great way to get your workout in. All you need is your own body weight and some space. Using your dining room chair or coffee table to do chair dips, push-ups, sit-ups and lunges is a quick and effective way to get your workout in. If you do carve out some time for the gym, Yoga is an excellent choice as it increases flexibility, endurance, circulatory and mental health in addition to burning 200-400 calories. Also, simply swinging a kettlebell can strengthen and tone your core while burning up to 400 calories.

While family and friends are usually gathering at this time, the buddy system is another good way to get motivated. Make a plan with a friend or coworker to try a new yoga or spin class. After your workout, reward yourselves with holiday shopping, or a cheery holiday drink and an appetizer. There are many things we can do to keep in shape during the winter. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work and walking the dog after dinner instead of letting her out in the yard, are fantastic supplements to your normal workout routine. Bundling up for a brisk walk or simply getting outside to shoot hoops with your kids is a great way to boost your metabolism and burn calories. Time constraints during this busy season can make skipping our regular workouts justifiable. However, when we put aside the time to take care of ourselves, whether it be getting a massage or hitting the gym, the positive feeling that follows is priceless. Healthy living is enjoying everything in moderation, so, have that piece of cake, keep your energy level up through exercise and fun activities and remember that good times with family and friends is more important than any calorie you’re counting. Cheers to a healthy and fun filled holiday season!

Pearlman, of New York’s Pearlman Aesthetic Surgery, is one of the city’s most accomplished and highly-regarded specialists for surgical and non-surgical procedures above the neck – receiving international recognition for his trademarked procedures such as the “Cupid’s Bow Lip” and “Pearl Lift”, with his renown specialty being Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty. Even patients who have had multiple nose surgeries by other doctors achieve more desirable-looking noses after Dr. Pearlman performs revision. He has the knowledge, experience, and skill to restore natural-looking results in noses that look overdone. It is he who other nose specialists often ask for advice. In addition to being dual board certified in both Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, plus Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Pearlman practices to the very high standards required of a leader in his field. Viewing aesthetic surgery as a combination of science and art, he distinguishes himself from other plastic surgeons by adopting a highly natural approach to surgery involving the nose, face and area around the eyes, where less is more. Dr. Pearlman understands that any procedure must be customized for each patient, and take into consideration both function and form. “You should only trust your face to a specialist,” Dr. Pearlman says. “When seeking out a surgeon to operate on your face or neck, it’s crucial to

see someone who has extensive training and experience in both facial anatomy and facial treatments. To achieve optimal results, a facial plastic surgeon has a huge advantage over a plastic surgeon.” As a world-renowned surgeon in Revision Rhinoplasty, which primarily involves correcting the functional issues of an over-operated nose, Dr. Pearlman lectures to doctors and scholars around the world. He applies first-rate care and precision to several procedures including Facelift, Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), Otoplasty (ear reconstruction), and Septoplasty (nasal septum surgery). In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Pearlman is adored for his nonsurgical aesthetic services. The results from his revolutionary technique in restoring cheek volume have such wow-factor they have in fact become known as “Wow Cheeks™”! In this simple 10-minute procedure, Dr. Pearlman restores youthful apple cheeks and softens the lines from the corner of the nose to the mouth. He has also gained attention for his “Pearl Lift®”, which heightens, tightens and brightens using Ultherapy, CO2 fractional laser skin resurfacing, and Voluma™ injectable gel. Gone Today, Hair Tomorrow “… a pate as full as Santa’s beard.” By Scott Wells, MD

I

f you’re old enough to be experiencing graying or thinning hair, and like me watched late night T.V. in the 80’s & 90’s, then you probably remember Sy Sperling. Ring a bell? Yup, he was not only the Hair Club President, he was also a client. Back then hair restoration was in its early days and consisted of hair pieces, weaves, potions, lotions, and “dolls, hair” plugs. Well, to quote another iconic commercial, “We’ve come a long way Baby!” For this holiday issue I thought I’d share my clinical views on the state of the art in hair loss prevention and Hair Restoration just in case you wanted to give that special person in your life the gift of a pate as full as Santa’s beard. Hair loss, undoubtedly, is one of the most commonly experienced ailments in the population. It affects woman as well as men. Almost one-third of the adult populous suffers some degree of loss or thinning, and that ratio rises to two in three men by the age of 65. The vast majority of cases are genetic or hereditary, and in men is referred to as Androgenic Alopecia or male-pattern baldness. Other less common causes include stress, disease, medication and injuries. In male pattern baldness, hair follicles sensitive to DHT, a hormone in the testosterone metabolic pathway, become inactive and eventually die off. The frontal hairline and crown are areas of the scalp where follicles are most vulnerable. Hair on the sides and back of the head are generally not DHT sensitive. Thus the typical male pattern baldness results in a receding frontal hairline and balding expanding from a central spot on the crown. Hair loss in woman is also much more common than often appreciated. Though genetic factors also predominate, hormonal factors play a large role. Even cosmetic surgery can leave certain tell tale changes in the hairline. Scientific studies have shown that blocking DHT receptors on the hair follicle can help spare the loss of sensitive follicles. This is the bases of medications such as Finasteride or Propecia. Though fairly effective, patients have to stay on these medications long term and can have adverse side effects, often in the form of sexual dysfunction [Ironic]. Thus Traditional medical treatments for hair loss have limitations, and can at best prevent further hair loss, but do not offer meaningful hair regrowth. Some of the newer non-surgical techniques evolving in the hair restoration industry involve techniques such as laser scalp treatments designed to strengthen waning hair follicle viability. Another very exciting and promising technique we use involves administering Platelet Rich Plasma [PRP] through tiny mechanical needle pricks in the scalp. The emerging data is quite

promising. For the future, the advent of stem cell cloning and cellular induction technologies may one day revolutionize the hair restoration industry, but for the time being, micro grafting remains the most effective and satisfying means of hair restoration. Hair transplantation techniques, the only currant natural and permanent solution for hair loss, fall into one of two minor surgical procedures: The strip technique and Follicular Unit extraction. The Strip technique, aka follicular unit transfer (FUT), begins with taking a strip of hair bearing scalp from densely populated areas on the sides of the head (donor area). The strip is then dissected into single, double or triple hair grafts, which are then implanted into the balding areas, known as recipient sites. One drawback of this technique is a scar left in the donor area which occasionally can become visible with future further hair loss. Follicular Unit Extraction is a newer procedure and more advanced technique designed to prevent the scar of the Strip Technique. Using a very sophisticated mechanical device individual follicle unit grafts are harvested from thickly populated areas and individually transplanted to thinner or balding areas. The technique is more expensive as it is much more labor intensive, however there is no donor site scar at all. All hair restoration techniques are performed under local anesthesia in a clean clinical setting with no sedation necessary at all. Patients listen to music, watch television, or even nap, while the clinical team does all the work. Post operatively there is minimal discomfort and swelling for a few days. Long term there is little maintenance, through most patients still use medical treatment to prevent further hair loss from new areas. So if you are suffering the effects of hair line recession more then you are feeling the current fiscal recession, there may be a solution in your future. Seeking consultation with an experienced hair restoration physician may be just what you need to get back your old, young hairstyle.

25A Spencer Scalzitti Aesthetics to Athletics A2A Part Of The New Breed Of Trainers Utilizing Tools That Have Rarely Been Seen

Incorporating The Newest Scientific Findings High Quality Health And Fitness Without Overlooking The Details

I

t’s time to raise the standard of professionalism in the fitness industry. When it comes to trusting your health, as well as your time, to a fitness professional, it is extremely important to aim for the top; and the higher the level of education, the more knowledgeable the fitness professional will be. A potential lawyer cannot simply take a 3-month course, pass an exam and then proceed to practice law. In the case of the fitness industry, that is the way it is; pass a three- month course and the trainer is certified to train. YOU, the client, deserve the best experience and programming, especially when beginning a healthy lifestyle change. Spencer Scalzitti raises the bar in the fitness industry by bringing research, knowledge, physiology, and biomechanics back to fitness. After finishing his Bachelors in exercise and wellness, Spencer attended Hofstra University to complete his Masters in Sports Science. He recently opened the new fitness studio in Roslyn Aesthetics to Athletics, or A2A for short, where achieving weight loss, or a body change goal, while simultaneously working to function at your body’s most optimal level is the desired effect. This could in turn improve not only how you look, but also how you feel and how you move. Being a certified Corrective Exercise Specialist, certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Spencer aims to move each client away from chronic pain, while also accomplishing his/her physical goals. These pains may include chronic back, knee, hip, neck, and shoulder pain. Some of the top fashionable fitness classes, boot camps, and dvds are creating more and more injuries. This ironically impedes

the ability to complete long-term weight loss goals. At this point, most people have experienced some type of exercise-induced injury or know somebody that has been hurt. There is no need to experience daily pain and discomfort, while aiming to improve your mind and body. To create this elite system, Spencer emphasizes that all the knowledge he has acquired is implemented into each individual program. “The details have been overlooked in fitness up until this point. Each movement in a prescription design needs to serve a specific purpose to maximize every second of a person’s training. Putting together a high intensity program is the easy part, incorporating individualization, pain pre/rehabilitation, and the newest scientific findings into each program takes an educated, patient mind.” To compliment this detailed style of fitness, Aesthetics to Athletics was created as a center where you never have to feel self-conscious again. The one-on-one private and semi-private training sessions provide an exhilarating, judgment free experience. Located right off of Northern Boulevard in Roslyn, the brand new upscale facility has all customized state-of-the-art equipment, incorporating exciting tools that have rarely been seen in the fitness world until now. The model for the fitness industry is changing and in a few years current fads and practices will no longer be in practice. A2A is on the forefront of change, leading the way into the future of high quality health and fitness. A2A is located at 1500 Old Northern Blvd, suite 3, Roslyn Ph: 516 580-9396

365 Days and Counting 25A Bikram Yoga Roslyn By Robin Ahrens, Photos by Jennifer Weil

“Give me 30 days, I’ll change your body. Give me 60 days, I’ll change your life.” - Bikram Choudhury, Founder of Bikram Yoga Anyone who practices Bikram, a vigorous form of hot yoga, will agree that within a single class you feel as if you have been reborn. No one knows this better than Keith Weidenman, a resident of Syosset, New York, who just completed 365 consecutive days … and he plans to keep on sweating. Weidenman, aged 59, took his first Bikram class in Providence, Rhode Island during a visit to a health-conscious sister. While he almost “hit the wall,” he did survive the 90-minute regimen in a room heated to 105 degrees with 40% humidity. In fact, Weidenman emerged feeling cleansed and rejuvenated. His breath was different, his senses were heightened, and his middle-aged limbs felt lighter and more agile. Hooked, he returned to Long Island in search of the perfect studio. Weidenman found it in Bikram Yoga Roslyn, an eco-friendly environment filled with ionized air and an abundance of good karma. Cleanliness and friendliness were both priorities, and he immediately signed-up for their introductory offer (7 days for $25), which morphed into a 20-day and then a 30-day challenge. Weidenman soon became a fixture, his name went up 50 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

on the challenger’s wall, and his unbroken record soared into triple digits. Encouraged by his teachers and fellow students, he decided to aim for an unprecedented 365 days at the Roslyn studio. “I realized that Bikram is something that I could and should do every day,” he explains. “I’m still in the process of figuring it all out; it’s like an experiment that I don’t want to fail.” Bikram yoga is a scientifically designed series of asanas or poses, which are performed in the same sequence during every 90-minute class. Most of the poses are repeated twice, and are held for 60, 30 or 10 seconds in detoxifying heat. Students do not have to count or remember the order of the poses; they are guided in their movements by a patented dialogue that is personalized by each teacher. Classes begin with a breathing exercise, flowing into a standing series and then a floor series, before a final twist and round of breath. The poses are designed to complement one another and to increase core strength, balance, and flexibility, while reducing stress, stimulating mental clarity, and improving concentration. The essence of

the practice is to heal the body, cell by cell, from the inside out. After attending hundreds of classes, Weidenman still listens to his teachers who help him to unlock the mind/body connection, and their familiar prompts to “look into the mirror,” “clear your thoughts,” and “stay present” are all highly effective. Weidenman is honest about his progress. He cites the benefits of Bikram: he has lost 20 pounds, feels stronger and more flexible, has a cast-iron immune system, and is more patient both on and off the mat. Or as he phrases it, “I no longer lose my temper.” What intrigues him the most is that he never gets bored because Bikram is an elusive art form; the poses that he masters one day are his nemesis the next. But struggle is all part of the process and Weidenman enjoys playing the edge, finding the right amount of push/pull so that he doesn’t end up with sore muscles. He has learned to listen to his body and to move slowly, or even come out of a pose, leaving its ultimate expression to another set, or to another day. A retired Physical Education teacher, Weidenman has always been an athlete. He left Boston College to play baseball, but due to injuries, had to abandon his dream of turning pro. His sisters (including the one who would later introduce him to Bikram) surreptitiously signed him up for classes at Queens College, and he completed his degree with an impressive 3.9 average. After several jobs, he was drawn to teaching because he wanted to make a difference. He worked with students from K-12, and spent part of his career in the South Bronx. Although he is a seasoned teacher, Weidenman is also a student at heart. He previously studied martial arts, which he compares to Bikram, with its emphasis on all-out effort, alternating with complete relaxation. The difference, he points out, is that in martial arts the instructor pushes you, while in Bikram the motivation comes mainly from within. Keith Weidenman would be a standout in any class with his athletic build, shock of salt-and-pepper hair, and infectious grin. It helps that he shows up in a black, dry-fit shirt with a pair of neon-green bull’s horns splayed across the front. While most yogis acclimate to the heat, lying in shavasana (corpse pose) or lightly stretching, Weidenman remains standing until class begins, bouncing on his toes and jabbing the air like a prizefighter before the first round. No one seems to mind and everyone takes his energy in stride. After all, this is a tough practice in which “party time” means a sip of water and relief comes in the form of a momentarily cracked window or door. Jamie Weil, owner of Bikram Yoga Roslyn and a popular teacher, appreciates the spark that Weidenman adds: “Keith’s 365 classes in 365 days is truly remarkable. Every day he brings motivation, consistency, and a kind, friendly smile to our yoga community. I’ve actually heard students say that he was the inspiration for their coming, especially if they were on the fence!” “In fact,” Weil notes, “we just launched a studio-wide challenge to encourage all of our students to dedicate more time to their practice. While I’m sure some of them will embrace this opportunity to get ready for the holidays, they may also do it out of solidarity with Keith.”

Despite his legendary status, Weidenman has no desire to ease up or to retire his yoga mat. His challenge is open-ended and he will continue to practice every day for an indefinite period of time, which includes the upcoming holiday season. And while there is no resemblance between Keith Weidenman and the cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge, there is a definite link between the affable yogi and the good-natured citizen who brightens the final pages of A Christmas Carol. Both men have been transformed by their visits, and both pledge to be kind to themselves and to others (another yoga prompt). For Scrooge, this means keeping Christmas in his heart every day; for Weidenman, this means keeping Bikram in his life every day. Perhaps, way, way down the line, the yogi may end his hot streak, but for now the ghosts of yoga past, present, and future are all sweat-infused and healing … and that seems to keep Mr. Weidenman in very fine spirits. Bikram Yoga Roslyn is your local neighborhood yoga studio - a place to connect with yourself and your friends. The Bikram beginners’ yoga classes of 26 postures is scientifically designed to work, cleanse and flush every organ and muscle. Bikram Yoga Roslyn is located at 1062 Old Northern Boulevard, Roslyn which can be accessed by coming into the studio or via www.BikramYogaRoslyn.com and (516) 200-9200.

A Walk In The Woods At

Bailey Arboretum By Victoria R. Crosby

O

n a warm and sunny Autumn Day I spent some time at Bailey Arboretum on Bayville Road and Feeks lane in Lattingtown, with Margaret Stacey, who is the president of Friends of Bailey Arboretum, a non profit group which was founded in 1974.

York, (where his father had been a scholarship student, and who graduated with honors Phi Beta Kappa,) and a daughter, Barbara. The charming mosaic, miniature German castle on the property was a gift to Barbara from her parents when she was a little girl.

Although the arboretum is still recovering from a great deal of damage due to Hurricane Sandy, (many trees were lost,) there is a peaceful feeling wandering through the trails, and seeing the magnificent trees in their multicolor glory reflected in the ponds at the north end of the property, where ducks swim lazily in the tranquil water.

Barbara made her debut in 1925, and after graduating from Vassar College she was married to John Vanneck in 1930, described by the New York Times as one of the wealthiest young men in America. Venneck was the great grandson of a British Lord. They married at Munnysunk, where weddings and other parties, either in the house or on the property or both, still happen today. I attended such a wedding in the summer of 2013, the ceremony took place in the garden and reception in the house.

The 42 acre property once a working farm, with a house built in the 1800’s, was purchased by Frank Bailey in 1912. He called the house Munneysunk, to which most Long Island homeowners can relate. Unlike the other mansions on the North Shore, the many Pratt mansions, F. W Woolworth’s Winfield, made of marble, the Mansions in Sands Point, Manhasset and Oyster Bay with stone, carved woodwork, and Tiffany stained glass; The treasures Frank Bailey collected were the gifts of nature, rare specimen plants and trees. Bailey’s first two wives had died, and in 1905 he married Marie Louise Lambert, his former secretary. They had a son, Frank Jr., who sadly died of a rare disease while still a student at Union College in Schenectady, New 62 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The house has also been rented for sweet sixteen parties, baby and wedding showers, and is the perfect setting for many other types of gatherings. Frank Bailey had a love of horticulture and was a collector of rare trees and plants. His father, Dr William Cody Bailey, who was related to Elizabeth Cody Stanton on his mother’s side, had been an amateur botanist and encouraged his son to follow his interest. Frank Bailey was a self made man who started out as a clerk at the Title Guarantee and Trust Company in Brooklyn, became vice president of the company in five years, and eventually the president, then retired a millionaire at the age of only 59.

The rarity of the specimen trees at Bailey have helped the Friends of Bailey Arboretum to recently gain the coveted accreditation classification, through a 42 page application process listing more than 125 identified species of trees. But Margaret Stacey told me that there are still about half the trees that haven’t been identified yet, and that a collections manager will be needed for that task. According to Margaret Stacey “Arbnet accreditation enables us to clearly define our role and position among other public gardens, focus our objectives and enter into a network of other likeminded groups.” Seeds Bailey obtained from China in 1947 grew into the famous Dawn Redwood, (Metasequoia) which had been thought to be extinct. In 2007 the Metasequoia Society found the tree at Bailey Arboretum to have the largest girth of any other in the world. There are now other Dawn Redwoods on the property, grown from seeds from the mother tree. In 1967 the Vanneck Bailey Foundation deeded the property to Nassau County, and in 1975 the Friends of Bailey Arboretum was formed to carry out the mission to maintain the estate, and they remain a vital support. Four long time board members, Barbara Catalano, Nancy Hussey, Suzanne Macklin and Cora Michalis, were recently honored at Bailey Arboretum for their contributions at a 1930’s style cocktail party, catered by Elegant Affairs. There are many nature trails and the staff and volunteers hold educational nature walks and survival courses, which are popular with boy scouts, girl

scouts, school groups, and college students. Family walks and adult walks and periodic seminars are given by professionals in the fields of horticulture and arboriculture. Mike Maron, the Property Superintendent, will also provide tours on request. Mike who has a background in forestry, takes care of all the property with the help of Mike Ahern, a part time assistant with a background in ornamental horticulture. The self contained Children’s Habitat is not a playground in the usual sense, there are no slides or swings or monkey bars, but there is a stage and a xylophone, both made of wood, that the children can play on, a really big chair, secret hiding places, they can let their imaginations run wild, as the parents relax nearby. The play area is accredited by The Early Childhood Institute. There is a Sensory Garden, called the Secret Walled Garden, wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass, with plants that will stimulate all the senses. This garden is maintained by the Locust Valley Garden Club. The Bog Garden takes advantage of the wet parts of the property where moisture loving flowers and plants bloom in the summertime, another area has a garden planted to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. There is no fee to enter Bailey Arboretum, although donations are very much appreciated, and fundraising events are held year round. Cornelia Guest

I

Cornelia Guest Historical, Gold Coast Royalty By Victoria R. Crosby, Photos by Wayne Herrschaft recently had the pleasure of talking with Cornelia Guest, who was born Cornelia Cochrane Churchill Guest, her father Winston Guest was Winston Churchill’s cousin, and her mother was the well known socialite, entertainment and gardening guru, C.Z. Guest, whose real name was Lucy Douglas Cochran Guest. C.Z. was a beautiful woman, who tried her hand at many things acting, fashion design, writing as well as being an excellent horsewoman, and her daughter inherited a lot of her looks and talent. (see the September/ October issue 25A article Designing Women of the Green Vale School) Cornelia spoke in glowing terms of her years at Green Vale, she told me that she is still in touch with many of her friends from those years, and she also remembered the names of many of her teachers and the Headmaster, and spoke about the food served at lunchtime, (she said they served floating island for dessert) and even remembered the name of the chef! She apologized if she had omitted anyone, so I won’t mention any names. Cornelia said “I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support.” The Staff off Green Vale responded; “As Green Vale celebrates its 91st year since our founding in 1923, we have much for which to be grateful. Our alumni continue to stay in touch and it is heartwarming to hear of their fond memories, lifelong friendships and teachers who made such a significant impact on their lives. Cornelia is a wonderful example of an alumna who is close in both geographic proximity and friendship with the school, but Green Vale is very fortunate to have alumni, parents of alumni, former teachers and staff who remain close despite distance. Today, Green Vale has 412 wonderful, curious and engaged students, and nearly 100 devoted and encouraging faculty and staff members. As many alumni share when they return to campus, Green Vale has changed and stayed ahead of the curve but always feels like coming home.” Alexis Morledge, Director of Admissions and former Director of Alumni Relations.

C.Z. was Winston’s second wife, he had two sons with his first wife, Helena Woolworth McCann, and a son Alexander, with C. Z. and ten years later when he was 60, Cornelia, his youngest child and only daughter, was born. She grew up, in effect, as an only child, as her closest sibling, her brother Alexander, is ten years older, but she told me she has wonderful memories of her childhood and her parents. Since she was a little girl Cornelia has always loved animals, and said she never played with dolls like other little girls. Her dogs were her companions and she has a soft spot for injured, abandoned and abused animals, which she would rescue, much to her mother’s consternation, as Cornelia would bring the dogs into her bedroom and allow them to sleep on her bed. She also hid the dogs in her closet, so her mother wouldn’t find out. Cornelia remembers specifically a beagle and a black mutt. This was a source of friction with her mother, but her Godfather, The Duke of Windsor, was sympathetic, as he also loved dogs. Cornelia said “I loved being an only child as I had an incredible curiosity and have never felt lonely. I was lucky to have lovely parents and I feel very blessed.”

esides dogs Cornelia’s menagerie of pets included cats, horses, a donkey and a giant tortoise. Growing up, she said she had lots of ponies and Jack Russell terriers. Great Pyrenees dogs are one of Cornelia’s favorite breeds, they are gentle giants, and she has owned quite a few of them over the years, all rescue dogs. A few months ago she rescued a year and half old Great Pyrenees therapy dog from Alabama and called him Love. Cornelia said that “there is a Divine Energy that sends the perfect dog” and “I have always found that I learned from the dogs.”

At age 18 she made her debut at the Waldorf Astoria, which she attended with her parents and Carolina Herrera and her husband Renaldo. Carolina had designed Cornelia’s white Debutante ball gown and C.Z.’s red gown. After the Debutante Ball the four of them went to Studio 54 which was in it’s heyday at that time, and by the end of the evening, Cornelia told me that her mother’s red dress was covered in the white glitter that Studio 54 used to sprinkle on the guests. Those were the years when Cornelia was named as the Debutante of the Year and the Debutante of the Decade, and partied with her mother’s friend Andy Warhol, and many other celebrities. Now she has left those days behind and even wrote a book about her years as a deb. Although an accomplished equestrian she no longer rides or keeps horses. Dec/Jan 2014 | 69

Templeton at Residence

Old Westbury

She has sold Templeton, the 1924 red brick, Georgian style, more than 15 acre family estate in Old Westbury, but has rented it for a year from the new owner while she looks for another smaller property on Long Island; one that will have enough land for her pets to roam. When I asked her what the new owner plans to do with the 28 room mansion, she said “I didn’t ask, and I don’t want to know.” Her father Winston Guest sold the original Templeton, which was formally called White Eagle by the DuPont Family, then sold to the Phipps family which was then inherited by Winston from his parents Frederick Guest and Amy Phipps Guest, to New York Institute of Technology and that mansion is now called the De Seversky Conference Centre. The Templeton that Cornelia sold is another mansion which the Guests also named Templeton. (Confused yet?) Cornelia has dated many celebrities, including actor Sylvester Stallone, who she said was a good friend, has had long term relationships, even been engaged several times, but never really felt a strong desire to marry or have children. Although she has many friends with children to whom she is close and is Godmother to several. Her life now is devoted mainly to her catering and fashion line of handbags and jackets. Her catering business is not completely vegan, “as I couldn’t stay in business”, she said, “but is completely cruelty free, organically grown and humanely raised.” It is her view that “Factory farms destroy the planet.” Cornelia Guest Events has catered parties on a small scale to much larger events like weddings. The fashion company Cornelia works with is called Project Gravitas and was founded by Lisa Sun in 2013. The bags and jackets are all non leather materials. The motorcycle style jackets are available in blue, black and brown, all named after her pets, and the handbags come in many styles and colors.

Cornelia plans to write another book, her previous books are, A Debutante’s Guide to Life, 1986, and more recently, Simple Pleasures; Healthy Seasonal Cooking and Easy Entertaining, 2012, both published by Weinstein Books. Her books and fashion accessories are available on her website, she also makes personal appearances all over the country. Find Cornelia Guest on Instagram and Twitter, or visit corneliaguest.com

ong Island’s North Shore, with its pristine seascape and bucolic interior acreage, is a dynamic mosaic of natural, preserved beauty. A notable part of the legendary “Gold Coast,” Oyster Bay Cove remains a vital, rural enclave of elegant estates and eclectic homes poised on the idyllic shores of Long Island Sound and Oyster Bay. This stunning stone mansion, constructed by the premier building firm Kean Development Company, is a trove of sophistication and grace, each room with colored expansive views of the picturesque harbor and Centre Island. Serenity and refinement define this meticulous residence; a unique collaboration of comfort, ease, sunlight and modern convenience. The exterior includes a formal bluestone motor court that prefaces this exquisite slate-roofed, stone clad edifice. Anchored with a varied array of specimen and indigenous vegetation, velvety lawn and garden beds are garnished with numerous terraces. Halyards beat the masts of the bobbing fleet that stretches out beyond a marvelous gazebo dock, sandy beach and broad back façade with generous loggias, terraces, expansive

rear grounds and the 2014 award-winning infinity pool and spa. A retreat of distinctive beauty and finesse, this impeccable manor house is a brilliant Kean project. Bound by the secluded shoreline that seams sandy beach and lawn, this 15,000 square foot Neo-classical residence is the inspired work of Kean Development. Intricate millwork, extensive paneling and noble columns stand as sentries buttressing vaulted ceilings and water view loggias. Handsome bowed entries give way to lovely rooms that defy their voluminous size with a warm, refreshing intimacy. Rich, chunky antique oak barn beams are underfoot while soaring elevations topped with crown molding garnish the interior in an understated, polished, simplicity. “Many of our clients entertain on a grand scale, so we build accordingly with an eye for manageability as well as comfort. Gracious space is not exclusively linear. Well-appointed volume is essential - it is the collective role of architecture, function, color and detail,” cites John Kean, Kean Development’s CEO and President.

Working with Kean affords the client the opportunity to consult with a comprehensive team of professionals from conception to completion. These homeowners in particular fell madly in love with the property, especially from the water. A presence of the harbor, as well as all things nautical is a pervasive theme. The Great Room boasts a one and one half story barrel vaulted ceiling, articulated with bowed ribs, echoing the hull of a ship. Floor to ceiling stacked windows capture the scenic panoramic harbor. The Living and Dining Rooms are peaceful havens moored by water views. At the homeowner’s request, the Theatre lies directly outside the Master Bedroom – a stocking foot, waterfront cinema! 76 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Recognized by the Northeast Spa and Pool Association as the 2014 Gold Medal winner for Best in Competition for Traditional Pool design, Kevin Murphy, VP of Kean Landscaping speaks of the heart of the project. “We are proud to have designed another award winning project. The 2,400 square foot pool is composed on two levels and consists of a raised spa, under water sun-shelf for lounging, a 50-foot lap pool and an infinity edge waterfall dropping 8 feet into the lower, oversized diving pool.” This prestigious award follows another Best in Class honor received by Kean Landscaping just last season.

Al Fresco Dining With Views Of Central Park

VILLAGIO ON THE PARK By Elizabeth Darwen

Restaurante Villagio on the Park is a place where the authenticity and tradition of Italy meets new world freshness.Highly respected restaurateur Alex Kalas – credited for popular Villagio outposts in South Florida and Chicago – and his business partner Thomas Billante present a sophisticated menu of refined Italian food in a beautifully-designed, bright and airy

A wood-burning oven for traditional thin-crust pizzas forms the heart of the restaurant, while antipasti, fresh seafood and family-style dishes fill out the extensive menu. Executive Chef Paul Johnston uses an abundance of fresh produce. Choose between varieties of excellent mains – like the Atlantic salmon baked to perfection, grilled tuna in a white wine and lemon sauce, veal scaloppini, traditional meatballs, or house-made ravioli stuffed with chicken and porcini mushrooms – all generously portioned and reasonably priced. Caramelized apple pie, espresso and mascarpone tiramisu, and ricotta cheesecake feature on the dessert list – which are all made in house. The bar boasts an impressive wine-list, plucked from Italy, America, Argentina and around the world.

Entertaining Like a Pro During

Holiday Season By Andrea Correale

By Andrea Correale

Andrea Correale, president of Elegant Affairs, is a celebrity caterer and the new national entertaining expert for the Lenox brand. Andrea has been featured in multiple magazines and on television networks such as People magazine, Woman's Day magazine, Oprah.com, FOX 5, WCBS, Bravo, VH1, Lifetime , and Martha Stewart Living. If you’re the type of person who likes to throw holiday parties without the help of a caterer, you know it can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are my professional tips on how to throw a low-stress, fabulous party. Think about logistics. Can people park on your street? Do you need city/ town permits? Valet parking? Do you have enough room for guests’ heavy winter coats? These are all questions that need to be answered and planned ahead of time. Cut liquor costs. Buy alcohol on consignment, so you can get what you need and return what you don’t. You would be surprised; most liquor stores are amenable to it. If the order is large enough they will even deliver it and pick it up after the party. Remember, you don’t need every flavored vodka and spirit, buy the essentials like vodka, tequila and wine (the most popular, from my experience). Scotch is also making a comeback and is a great addition to your bar.

Spiked Double Mint Hot Cocoa

Mulled Wine With Cinnamon

Make one signature cocktail ahead of time. Create holiday-themed cocktails such as a spiked apple cinnamon cider or mulled wine. Garnish each glass and place these cocktails on a tray somewhere near the entrance when the guests come in. It sets a polished and elegant tone for the party. Think about the setup. The first thing people do at a party is go straight to the bar, so strategically place it in an exact place where you want the party to gather. Never put a bar near the front door. It always causes a bottleneck and if you don’t want everyone in the kitchen, don’t put the bar anywhere near it! Place food on the opposite side of the space to create a smooth flow. Keep the food simple. Plan a menu that can stay out room temperature, and mix in a few hot items that will hold their integrity. Foods such as meatballs and short ribs that sit in sauce are good options (avoid pasta, which doesn’t hold up well). Have food displayed before guests come so you can enjoy your party and avoid frequent trips in and out of the kitchen. If you aren’t comfortable cooking for large crowds just make a few signature items and fill in with some store bought items to round out the menu. Sushi, Samosas, Spanakopita are all great party foods that can easily be purchased at your favorite local eateries. Present these foods on your serving pieces and make them your own. It’s also not a bad idea to delegate. Ask a friend or close family member to bring a specific dish. This will also alleviate some pressure. Don’t make foods that are hard to eat. One of my favorite ways to present party food is to make mini meals in a stemless glass. For example, fill the glass with a cranberry quinoa cashew salad, put a few pieces of

Roasted Beet, Goat Cheese Canapes. Bite Size And Easy To Eat!

Cherry Parfaits

grilled chicken on top, place a fork in the glass and set up a tray of mini meals. Avoid foods that are too saucy or messy or items that require a fork and knife to eat. Think bite size! The idea is to keep people mixing and mingling while they eat freely and easily. Coffee and dessert. From experience, not many people drink coffee at parties, so make coffee for less than half of the amount of guests you’re expecting. Hot Chocolate has made a comeback and is a recommended addition to your coffee station. Perhaps pass a spiked version of this holiday classic. For dessert – people always ask what they can bring to your party, so ask them to come with dessert. Perhaps make one item on your own. Dessert Parfaits in individual glasses are easy to make and very trendy. There are so many flavors and variations, choose your favorite and make one per person. Make them ahead of time, place a spoon in each one and present them near the coffee bar. Simple yet festive. The mood. For the perfect party, don’t forget about ambiance. It’s all about tantalizing the senses. Put on a great playlist. I suggest you put this together a few weeks in advance. It’s one thing you could do early and get out of the way. The playlist should be five hours of consecutive music to be safe. Dim the lights. If your dining room and main living spaces don’t have dimmer switches change that immediately. Lighting is key! Light the candles. Now is the time to light all those candles you never light, and then some. Candles are instrumental in creating a festive warm atmosphere. And if you have a fireplace or two light them all. Follow these tips and you will have the perfect set up for a fabulous evening! Dec/Jan 2014 | 81

KALE R

eally want to go green? Kale might be the answer to kickstarting a new healthy lifestyle. Juice it, make it the base to your salad, cook up a soup, turn it into pesto, or even try adding it to your favorite frittata. The possibilities are endless. This versatile veggie is the king of By Bobbie Larrobino healthy greens, and while it may be referred to as the “NEW” friend with benefits, it has actually been around for quite a long time. Remember when the ancient Romans and Greeks mentioned cabbages? Well, they were actually speaking of kale, which originated in Asia Minor and proliferated in the Mediterranean. Cato, a second century B.C. Roman statesman recommended eating kale with vinegar before and after feasting and drinking. He believed kale to be such a perfect food that man need not eat anything else. Later on, kale was brought to Europe by the Celts and continued its journey from there as Vikings carried the leafy vegetable to Scotland. The Scots proceeded to coin the name kale, and voila—a super food was born. The phrase “come to cail” developed as a result and came to be a synonymous invite to dinner… with or without kale. Now, even the Obama’s have dined on kale salad at their Thanksgiving feast. To buy kale, look for crisp, deeply colored leaves and avoid any that are turning yellow or appear wilted. Clean it properly by filling your sink with cool water, immersing the veg, and washing well to remove any soil. Begin your official prep by removing the tough stems and central ribs. At just 33 calories a cup, this “it” vegetable tastes a little peppery and a bit sweet with a mineral edge. Kale has incredible culinary flexibility 82 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

and fuses well with garlic, lemon, vinegar, red pepper flakes, olive oil, shallots, potatoes, beans, rice, bacon and sausage, (just to name a few.) It can be boiled, steamed, braised, sautéed or served raw. Kale is also wonderful in tarts or gratins, and lets not forget about kale chips! Juicing is also a widely popular trend as well as making it an addition to your smoothie. If you haven’t guessed it already, kale can be used as a substitute for just about any leafy green vegetable. Kale is a member of the cruciferous vegetable family that includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, and brussels sprouts. It is a reliable commodity to farmers, as it grows easily month after month and the ability to grow kale year round in most climates makes it a staple around the world. If you visit Wheatley Plaza in Greenvale, or The Americana in Manhasset you will see kale growing in their ornamental gardens all winter long—and YES, it is all edible! This attractive and delicious vegetable is undeniably nutritious with remarkable health benefits. Aside from B1, B2, and B6, it contains potassium, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, omega 3 fatty acids, folate and protein. It is high in beta carotene and other carotenoids. Packed with phytonutrients, kale has the power to support brain health. Certain molecules found in plants, specifically Kaempferol and Sulforaphane, are powerful enough to arouse the body’s detox power and awaken the genes that promote a longer life expectancy. Kale also contains the elusive and powerful antioxidant vitamin K (the vitamin that protects brain cells and trumps milk in the absorption of calcium needed for bone health). In case you’re still not sold, kale is also said to strengthen the stomach and promote the growth of body tissue. So as Hippocrates said, “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.”

Art Artist Karsten Staiger

New York Love Story Text by Diana Pinck

The New York skyline is a recognizable and illustrious view worldwide. It is the prominent background of thousands of movies and millions of selfies, but for us New Yorkers it is so much more than eye-catching scenery. The New York skyline is the majestic backdrop of our lives. It defines us. It is our pride and glory. It is the visual equivalent of home, and we love it in all its greatness and flawed chaos. Looking at the glittering sky scrapers reaching for the clouds and stars, our hearts swell, and we hear Alicia Keys or Frank Sinatra singing: “If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere ... Hear it for New York, New York, New York!” Few are truly successful in capturing New York’s greatness in an image. Photographer Karsten Staiger is one of the notable few. 25A is happy to bring our readers an exclusive look at some of the images from Karsten Staiger’s series New York Love Story. 98 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The German-Croatian Karsten Staiger was always a very visual and creative person. Even as a child, growing up in Germany, he enjoyed looking at the world from different perspectives, and then putting down his impressions in colored renderings which he sold successfully from a young age on. In his late teens, young Karsten enrolled in the University of Stuttgart to study graphic design. After graduation, in 1995, Karsten moved to New York to further his career as an oil painter. Karsten fell in love with his new home town: “I love waking up at sunrise and walking into a new day full of promises, not knowing what adventures or misadventures lie ahead in this city of dreams.” Initially, to support himself, Karsten was a bike messenger for a photo studio, where he eventually worked as a stylist and assistant on projects. Finally, in 1999, when digital photography was just becoming viable for

t commercial use, he decided to open a digital photo studio of his own. He invested in the most cutting edge equipment and the new company, Karsten Staiger Photography, was an overnight success, landing Nextel and later Sprint, In Style and MODE magazines as its first big clients. At first Karsten was mainly in charge of layout and retouching, which came easily to him, thanks to his graphic design background. However, in 2001, the famous diamond jewelers DeBeer launched a competition for their ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ campaign. Karsten submitted his own photographs and won his company the contract. Buoyed on this success Karsten started to do more and more photography, which eventually replaced painting as his chosen art form. Aside from his beautiful work as a commercial photographer, Karsten started, in 2005, capturing sweeping vistas from innumerable rooftops of New York City. These photographs are now compiled in what the artist

calls his New York Love Story. He admits that it has become quite an obsession. “I want to take people into my world, to see my city from places only few have access to. Through a big real estate company I have access to many exclusive rooftops. In addition, as word of mouth has spread about my work and my passion, I often get invited by friends and friends of friends to incredible spots. Sometimes I find my own way and sneak up onto a roof. Truthfully, that is the most exciting way to go. It has a lot to do with the weather and the time of day, and witnessing the beauty of a fleeting moment that can never return.” Karsten Staiger is currently looking for sponsors to mount a very large scale exhibit of New York Love Story. A book may also be in the works soon. I for one cannot wait for either. For more info go to www.karstenstaiger.com or visit Karsten on facebook www.facebook.com/karsten.staiger Dec/Jan 2014 | 99

Artist Lori Cuisinier LEONARD TOURNE’ GALLERY Lori Cusiniers work can be found online with HÆ ART and Leonard Tourné Gallery. Leonard Tourné Gallery specializes in established and emerging modern and contemporary artists from around the globe. We work with a variety of media, including paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, collage and natural history art. Founded in New York’s SoHo nearly a decade ago, Leonard Tourné Gallery moved to its current Upper East Side location in 2013. Later that year, we launched HÆ ART (pronounced “high art”), an e-commerce platform for original and limited edition works by established and upand-coming artists. 100 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The gallery has worked with hundreds of seasoned and first-time collectors and has advised the collections of museum trustees, major philanthropists, Fortune 500 executives, dignitaries and institutions. As part of our philanthropy and corporate social responsibility programs, the gallery has organized dozens of auctions and special events, donated artwork and raised funds for a variety of causes, including the Women, Peace and Security Program of the United Nations-affiliated Global Action, Mayors for Peace, Smile Train and the New York Fund for Public Schools.

A r t The black-and-white series, Bound, was inspired by the poetic lyrics and music written by Leonard Cohen for his 1971 composition, “Joan of Arc.” The song was meaningful at the time and has retained its power for Lori. After researching the historical facts and myths associated with the martyr, she began to experiment, arranging a sequence of still-lifes using the architectural features of my apartment and my clothing as subjects for photographs. Hands also appear at times, but these spare visual forms alone shape an ethereal space and depict a visual odyssey that is both intimate and unsettling. Souvenirs Éloignés (Distant Memories) was inspired by Bohuslav Martin’s 1938 opera, Juliette ou la clé des songes. The storyline chronicles events in a small French village in which the inhabitants lose all memory and can thus live only in the present. Longing for the details of their pasts, they appropriate the stories of others. In Souvenirs Éloignés, I followed suit, excerpting fragments from snapshots and journals documenting my childhood, earliest years in New York, and recent experiences. BIOGRAPHY Lori Cuisinier grew up all over the United States and in Montreal but has spent her adult life primarily in New York City. Her varied interests have led her to an Honors B.A. in fine arts from the University of Ottawa and a J.D. from the City University School of Law at Queens College. The central theme in her recent paintings and drawings (as well as past photographs) is self-portraiture. Specifically, this theme has led her through interpretation

and reinterpretation of “self,” including her possessions and surroundings (real and imagined) as well as the inner world of her dreams. Her work has been shown in the United States and Europe. Photographic images are featured in Academy Award-nominated director Mira Nair’s 2006 film, The Namesake, in Adam Brooks’ 2008 film, Definitely, Maybe, staring Rachel Weisz and Mark Mann’s 2013 film, generation Um..., starring Keanu Reeves. Cuisinier lives with her husband in New York City and Southampton, but maintains her studio in Southampton. MCNEILL ART GROUP McNeill Art Group has been established since 2005. Beth McNeill is an independent curator and proprietor of McNeill Art Group, based in Southampton, New York. Navigating the pool of contemporary art on Eastern Long Island for over twelve years, Beth is an authority on this rich historical geographic art region. Beth has curated exhibitions, lectured on collecting contemporary art and built collections for both private and public spaces including Tiffany & Co., East Hampton, NY, The Tribeca Project Space, New York, Cantor Fitzgerald, Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, NY and The School of Visual Arts, New York, among others. POWERFUL SHOWS PAVE WAY FOR This news is national and international because more than 75,000 people from across the U.S. and all over the world travel to visit Art Basel in Miami, Florida each year. These two powerful shows open Saturday, Nov. 8 and pave the way for Art Basel season. One hails from China and the other from a Latin American collection.

Basel

(Wang Qingsong, Follow Me, 2003) The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum ushers in Art Basel season 2014 with two powerful shows opening November 8. From China, Wang Qingsong: ADinfinitum, and from Argentina Global Exchange: Geometric Abstraction Since 1950 (from the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Buenos Aires, MACBA). This strong pairing sets the season into motion with a blaze of elaborate color and spectacle: Wang Qingsong’s colossal and daring photo-murals encompass the entire third floor of the museum. MACBA’s stellar collection of multinational Geometric Abstraction artists is transported to the Frost’s galleries on the second level. During Art Basel week, the 11th annual Breakfast in the Park showcases FIU’s monumental Sculpture Garden on Sunday, December 7 with American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham as this year’s guest speaker. Wang Qingsong: ADinfinitum (November 8 – January 18) Recognized worldwide as one of China’s most innovative artists, Wang Qingsong is based in Beijing and was born in 1966 at the start of the Cultural Revolution. ADinfinitum features giant photographic masterpieces the artist stages in huge spaces such as movie studios and warehouses. These works depict the drastic changes occurring in China, and the challenges brought about by this accelerated transition. They chronicle the difficulties that rapid societal change has presented to the Chinese people.

(Wang Qingsong, The Thinker, 1998, Collection of Anthony Japour) ADinfinitum features giant photographic masterpieces the artist stages in huge spaces such as movie studios and warehouses. These works depict the drastic changes occurring in China, and the challenges brought about by this accelerated transition. They chronicle the difficulties that rapid societal change has presented to the Chinese people.

The artwork can require months of logistical preparation and staging, and recruitment of dozens and sometimes hundreds of models for epic photo-shoots (many are done in one day and with no digital manipulation).

(Wang Qingsong, Follow Him, 2010) The exhibition is site-specific, featuring 12 of Wang’s large-scale works (some from the Miami collections of Ella Cisneros, Anthony Japour and Craig Robins). Spanning all three galleries of the Frost’s third floor (a rarity for the museum), the show encompasses 2,500 square feet. A first for Wang’s solo shows, each gallery is dedicated to a particular theme of his work. The artist’s deep nostalgia for Chinese tradition permeates one gallery focusing on this core subject matter. One of the artworks in this exhibition, Crazy Readers, has never been shown in the United States. “Known for wandering the streets of China armed with a camera, Wang states that he uses his photo-murals to witness and emulate the hopes and frustrations of the Chinese people,” said Curator Dr. Lidu Yi, professor and art historian at Florida International University. “ADinfinitum brings the story of China past and present to a new Western audience fascinated by his country’s cultural and artistic dramas.”

(Wang Qingsong, Can I cooperate with you?, 2000, Collection of Craig Robins)

Wang’s theatrical techniques have won international critical acclaim. From this review by Katherine Brooks, “Wang Qingsong Addresses Chinese Urbanization In Massive, Impressively Crowded Photographs” (on the artist’s website): “To create his expansive images, Wang stages elaborate scenes … involving dozens of models and meticulously placed props combined in impossible arrangements. From gory hospital scenes in amphitheaters to mock UN meetings under a glaze of fog … equal parts surreal and obsessive, referencing China’s surging material appetite and the rapidly changing economic landscape all in one fell swoop … Wang pushes the boundary between dark fantasy and the reality of his country’s future.” (by Katherine Brooks) (Wang Qingsong, Competition, 2004, Collection of Ella Cisneros-CIFO)

From Malta with Love

By Victoria R. Crosby, Photos by Amanda Gentile and Vitally Piltser & Victoria R. Crosby

I

Alfred Pisani, Founder And Chairman Of Corinthia Hotels

recently attended a wonderful private recital and reception given by the founder and chairman of Corinthia Hotels, Alfred Pisani, who was born and raised in Malta. The event was held at the Appell Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center, with a recital by tenor Joseph Calleja, accompanied by pianist Vincenzo Scalera. As each guest entered they were greeting by Mr. Pisani and then offered a glass of white wine or champagne. Delicious and plentiful hors d’oeuvres were passed around by a very professional staff. Beautiful pink, purple and white orchids adorned the room, which was furnished with white couches and chairs for the guests to lounge on. Two bars were set up at each side of the room, and tall tables covered in blue and gold cloths. Following the cocktail hour, guests were asked to move into the adjacent theater which has floor to ceiling glass walls behind the stage area that overlook Columbus Circle; a very dramatic setting for performances. Mr. Pisani welcomed everybody to the event and introduced the performers, world class tenor Joseph Calleja accompanied on piano by virtuoso Vinzenco Scalera. Callejea is thirty six years old and was inspired to pursue opera as a career after seeing the film The Great Caruso starring tenor Mario Lanza. The performance included arias from Rossini, Verdi and Puccini, with an encore that included the Edith Piaf song La Vie en Rose. In between songs Calleja thank Alfred Pisani for the opportunity to perform for his guests. Both Pisani and Calleja are originally from Malta, so Calleja told a humorous story, cleverly retold from the bible, in which St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta, more than two thousand years ago, living in a cave, and wrote in his letter to the Corinthians about the desperate need for hotels in Malta! The Corinthia hotels have been in business for more than fifty years, founded by Alfred Pisani and his family in 1962. The flagship hotel is in London, but there are Corinthia hotels all over the world.

104 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

I was invited to this event because I am a board member of the Historic Royal Palaces in London. hrp.org. There were also guests there from other British organizations. The Grammy nominated singer Joseph Calleja has performed in the most famous opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden and The Royal Albert Hall in London, and at The Vienna State Opera House. His voice has been broadcast on radio, television, films and online. Vincenzo Scalera was born in New Jersey of Italian American parents, although he now lives and works in Milan when he is not touring performing on piano or harpsichord. After graduating from the Manhattan School of Music, Scalera worked as a an assistant conductor with the New Jersey State Opera. In addition to accompanying Mr. Calleja he has also accompanied such celebrated singers as Montserrat Caballe, Jose Carreras, and Renata Scotto. One of the guests, Susan Mathisen, President of SAM Fundraising Solution said, “It was one of those perfect New York evenings. Hearing Mr. Calleja’s wonderful voice with the city as a backdrop was such a special treat.” Following the wonderful concert a light supper was served in the Appell Room, then everybody was given a goody bag as they left. Among the contents of the bag was a CD of Joseph Calleja’s Tribute to Mario Lanza, titled Be My Love. On the CD, in addition to the songs made famous by Mario Lanza are many opera arias, including the beloved Nessun Dorma, and other popular favorites such as Grenada and You’ll Never Walk Alone. I played the CD on my radio show Oasis on WHPC 90.3fm, as it fit within the genre of music for relaxation and inspiration. It was a delightful evening and a wonderful gift from Alfred Pisani to his American and British/American friends and supporters.

World’s Fastest

The Story

Hennessey Venom GT

In 2007, Road & Track Magazine invited Hennessey Performance to participate in a shootout between some of the world’s fastest supercars. The contest? Find out which car could accelerate from 0 to 200 mph in the shortest amount of time. Some of the heavyweights competing where the Mercedes McLaren SLR, Lamborghini Murciellago, Ruf Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and the 1001 bhp all-wheel drive Bugatti Veyron 16.4. For our entry, the Hennessey team brought the company’s latest Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper. Several runs were made by each car on the 2.9 mile long runway at Lemoore Naval Air Station in central California. At the end of the day, the Hennessey Venom 1000 Viper was crowned king of the ROAD & TRACK “Speed Kings” shootout by posting the quickest time of the day by running 0 to 200 mph in an astonishing 20.3 seconds. By comparison, the 2nd place Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

nearly 4 seconds behind the Venom with a time of 24.2 seconds.”At the end of the Road & Track test, we were very pleased with the results and the Venom taking first place over the Veyron”, says John Hennessey. “As far as I am aware, we have the only car that has ever beaten a Veyron in an independent, head to head test of vehicle performance. While we were quite happy with that accomplishment, it did not take long for me to begin thinking about what could we do to improve the performance of our car.” He continues, “I thought that we could possibly add a bit more power but had concerns about being able to put that power to the ground via the Viper frontengine rear-wheel drive platform. My next thought was to reduce weight… try to lighten the Viper from 3500 lbs to under 3000 lbs. But that would not be reality as the car could only shed about 200 lbs while

still being a true street car with a full interior, AC, etc. So I started thinking about lighter alternative vehicles that could be modified to 1000+ hp and that could put the power to the ground. All-wheel drive went against the grain of light weight due to the added driveline components.” “One day I joked about putting the Venom 1000 Twin Turbo engine in the back of a Lotus Exige. Then I thought, let’s do a sketch and see what that might look like. When I saw the sketch I stopped laughing and really started to seriously think about this idea. We then

had a few more detailed renderings made. And when I saw these drawings, I thought to myself, we can build this car with 1000+ hp and a weight well under 3000 lbs. A midengine design like the Ford GT will put the weight of the motor and transmission over the rear tires giving better traction. Design as much downforce as we will need to have a car that handles like a kart on the road or race track. At the same time also have a car with the best power to weight ratio possible giving unmatched acceleration. This is how the Venom GT concept was born.” Dec/Jan 2014 | 107

The Truth Shall Set You Free By Victoria R. Crosby

Some say God is black, some say God is white, some may feel God’s presence in the darkness of the night. Some say God’s a He, some say God’s a She, other people have no gender for their deity. Who’s to say who’s wrong? Who’s to say who’s right? For what’s true is all the above, the truth is God is love. Some people pray all day, and other people pray only when their life seems not to go their way. Some give thanks when things go right. Some ask for help and hope God might change the course their life is taking, and turn to him in fright. Who’s to say who’s wrong? Who’s to say who’s right? For what’s true is all the above, the truth is God is love. Some think a house of worship is important to their prayer, they find comfort in the ritual, others do not care to make church going habitual, yet find God’s presence everywhere. Some people are uplifted by the pomp and circumstance, other express their love of God through their music and their dance. Who’s to say who’s wrong? Who’s to say who’s right? For what’s true is all the above, The truth is God is love.

North Shore Land Alliance

Barn Dance and Wine Auction By Victoria R. Crosby

An old fashioned barn dance was recently held at the barn at Groton Place, in Old Westbury, courtesy of Julie and Luis Rinaldini, to benefit the North Shore Land Alliance. A wine auction, silent auction and live auction took place at the event. Several large tents were used in addition to the barn. Many people dressed in western regalia, cowboy hats and boots, while others did not. Carter Bales, Chairman of the North Shore Land Alliance, welcomed the guests and announced the wonderful news that the Humes property, the Japanese Stroll Garden in Mill Neck,

which had been in danger of closing, had been protected by NSLA. The fundraising events help to protect land and water on the North Shore of Long Island. NSLA’s mission is to “protect and preserve in perpetuity the green spaces, farmlands wetlands, groundwater and historical sites of Long Island’s North Shore for the enhancement of quality of life and enjoyment and benefit of future generations.” northshorelandalliance.org

Colonial Days at Raynham Hall

Masquerade and costume parties are always popular in the autumn months. Raynham Hall held it’s annual Halloween party

with delightfully creepy, yet surprisingly delicious hors d’oeuvres; deviled eggs with spiders on top, eyeballs and other such gruesome treats, followed by ghostly desserts. They could have their fortunes told by tarot cards readers and 25A’s own graphologist Monica Randall. Among the many guests were Michael and Helen Bonebrake, Connie Cincotta and Zack Nudo , Diana Collins, Bob and Anna Mackay, Virginia and Stuyvesant Pierrepont. A few weeks before this event Rayhnam Hall held a Colonial Day with re-enactment of an encampment by the Order of the Ancient and Honorable Huntington Militia, which included a musket drill, Colonial cooking, crafts, a military drill and games in the garden for children. It was a colorful and education display and was free to the public. For further information on the programs at Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay visit raynhamhallmuseum.org.

Oyster Bay East Norwich Boys & Girls Club held their annual Masquerade Gala at Oheka castle a few nights before Halloween. A few people came in costume, but most just carried their masks which were given to guests as they arrived. This party was more glamorous than mysterious, even though the dress code was for business attire. Most people when at a party at a castle will dress for the occasion. The event featured a silent auction, raffle and live auction. During the evening a group of young people from the club sang Give your Heart a Break, made popular by Demi Lovato. 10th Grader Robert Howes received the OBENBGC Youth of the Year Award. Funds raised help to provide youth with many after school enriching programs. bgcoben.org

2014 ANGEL BALL RAISES $3.7 MILLION FOR GABRIELLE’S ANGEL FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH By Elizabeth Darwen

Photos by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images

G

abrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research presented its annual fundraiser, the Angel Ball, Monday night at Cipriani Wall Street. This black-tie benefit, hosted by Grammy-nominated songwriter Denise Rich, honored His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba, United Arab Emirates Ambassador to the United States, and Abeer Al Otaiba; fourtime NASCAR Cup Series champion and Founder of the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation, Jeff Gordon; Jho Low, Chief Executive Officer of Jynwel Capital Limited and Director of the Jynwel Charitable Foundation Limited; and multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and composer Nile Rodgers. This signature fundraising event of Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation stands out as one of the highlights of the New York social season. This year, lead sponsors featured United Airlines as the Official Angel Ball Airline, and Italian fashion house Emilio Pucci as Décor Sponsor. Emceed by Rocsi Diaz, the show began with an incredible performance by The Voice’s Avery Wilson. Clive Davis introduced both him and the second surprise performer of the night, Alicia Keys. Keys took a seat at the piano to perform “We Are Here” and “No One” as the crowd sang along. Honoree Nile Rodgers and Chic kept the momentum going, as the crowd got to their feet and danced along to “Le Freak,” “Everybody Dance,” “Good Times” and “We Are Family.”

After dinner, Jamie Foxx performed his chart-topping hits “Blame It on the Alcohol”, “Started From the Bottom” and “Gold Digger.” Ludacris then surprised the crowd by joining Foxx on the stage during a performance of DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win.” He also performed “Yeah,” “Pimping All Over the World,” “Money Maker,” “How Low” and “Move.” The duo pulled audience members up on the stage to dance and sing along. Also in attendance were: Sofia Vergara, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Kris Jenner, Josh Lucas, Lala Anthony, Hailey Baldwin, Bethenny Frankel, Michelle Rodriguez, Busta Rhymes, Sami Gayle, Gigi Hadid, Julie Henderson, Tommy & Dee Hilfiger, Nicky Hilton, Paris Hilton, Star Jones, Hoda Kotb, Tina Knowles, Mark Linn-Baker, Jonathan Batiste, Boris Becker, Gabriela Cadena, Natalie Cole, Clive Davis, Mathilde Frachon, Elsa Hosk, Georgia Fowler, Selenis Leyva, Dr. Stephen D. Nimer, LaChanze, Hal Rubenstein, Ivana Trump, Robert Verdi, Domingo Zapata and Angel Ambassadors Brittany Daniel, Estelle and Suleika Jaouad and many others. Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research was created in 1996, when Grammy-nominated songwriter and philanthropist, Denise Rich lost her daughter Gabrielle, a vibrant 27-year-old actress and Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor to acute myelogenous leukemia. Gabrielle’s mother and sisters, Daniella Rich Kilstock and Ilona Rich Schachter, believed the best way to honor Gabrielle’s memory was to create a Foundation that would fund the best and brightest scientific investigators with the hope that less toxic treatments, and ultimately a cure, might be discovered.
