“One must not let oneself be overwhelmed by sadness.”

- Jackie Kennedy All this summer as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of America’s most audacious accomplishments, the Apollo Space Program and Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s “one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind,” we remember John Fitzgerald Kennedy too. It was Kennedy who promised America that we would walk on the moon. And we did. It is a bittersweet recollection.

They referred to the Kennedy years as Camelot, but along with the majesty and great hope there was a great tragedy as well, ushered in by an assassin’s bullet in Dallas, that wounded an entire nation. The eternal beauty, grace and dignity of Jacqueline Kennedy helped our country heal as we cried watching a three year old boy, dubbed John-John by the adoring media, salute his fallen hero. Our hero.

It was no surprise that this young boy, a son of Jack Kennedy, would grow up to become the one true prince of New York City. A dashing young man with dark, wavy hair and the Kennedy good looks. As much a celebrity as a Beatle, JFK Jr. loved New York City and we loved him right back. He could ride his bike or roller-blade to and from his equally famous mom’s apartment on 85th and 5th avenue and people would smile and wave but leave him be. He was a New Yorker and that accorded him a degree of privacy and normalcy even though he would never really be like one of us. He could never truly be anonymous. He was, after all, the son of the President. He dated actresses, became a lawyer and social activist and published a political magazine called “George” and behaved like a Kennedy, supporting charities, all the while inspiring all who knew him to find their own better angels. JFK Jr. knew the importance of his family to America and his unspoken responsibility to all of New York City. To inspire all who saw him to reach for the stars. To aim for the moon. As a nation we still think back to those carefree days at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port. We think of a suntanned Jack Kennedy, a young Jackie. We think of Camelot and what was and what could have been. And we remember that little boy playing under his father’s desk in the Oval Office. And for a brief moment, all seems right in the world once again.

John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette and her sister Lauren died in a tragic plane crash twenty years ago this July. Our city remembers them.

orn from the small town of Cavinti in Laguna, Philippines, fashion designer Gimjude Oliveros has discovered his innate eye for arts and fashion because of the rich heritage of design and culture in his hometown. The province of Laguna is one of the places in the country that showcases and sells the infamous Piña fabric, a globally known fashion raw material hand-loomed from pineapple leaf fibers. Traditional piña weavers in the country are dwindling, making the delicate piña cloth expensive and highly prized. They are used only for very formal events.

They’re mechanically woven and once made from abacá or banana silk are turned into Jusi fabric. Gimjude Oliveros used the Jusi fabric and cotton twill materials in his collection called “Tribal Army”. Dedicated to the Filipino soldiers risking their lives in Marawi, Mindanao, the “Tribal Army” couture pieces are a testament of how the fashion designer is honoring his hometown’s art by showcasing colorful, tribal details hand-painted by a local artist in his hometown. The paintings just pop out on on the neutral hues of the fabrics.

The creations are of green and brown hues, the same colors of the Filipino soldiers’ uniforms, as his expression of his love for his country the Philippines, and its peace guards--- the Filipino soldiers who are fighting for peace and order in Marawi, Mindanao.

In this fashion editorial, the famous bahay kubo of the Philippines is also showcased.

ne would be remiss to confine Melania Trump to the titles she holds: Supermodel, mother, and First Lady. Her appeal is greater than all of that. She is the sum total of her entire biography. Immigrant. Artist.

Fashion Icon-- and yes, feminist.

Born in the former socialist state of Slovenia, then a part of communist Yugoslavia, Melania Knavs experienced first-hand the stifling consequences of practiced socialism, created by Tito’s rapacious demand for power. Yet, Melania Knavs was determined to create a life on her own terms.

At an early age, Melania demonstrated an aptitude for modeling. Contrary to popular belief, a pretty face isn’t enough for a successful career in modeling, it requires strenuous effort, determined perseverance, and nuanced business acumen. Melania earned her international modeling contract; it wasn’t given to her like a government hand-out. For many an aspiring model, that achievement alone would have been enough. Ascending to the most prestigious catwalks of Milan, Paris, London, and New York, while representing the world’s premier designers and artists. To Melania, however, the runway wasn’t a platform, but a stairway.

It was through modeling that she met her future husband and America’s 45th President. She would also become an American citizen and ultimately the First Lady of The United States of America.

First Ladies are often defined by their husbands. Seen by many in gendered terms as complementary and compliant, standing by their man without a will of their own. Melania shatters that mold. She defines her husband and defies expectations in every way.

Her detractors say she can be aloof. To her admirers, she is mysterious, chic, and something like royalty - a modern Grace Kelly.

As our First Lady, Melania has shown a quiet strength and independent spirit while rejecting or refusing to tolerate the suffocating strictures that our culture places on one of the last acceptable gendered stereotypes. That strength of will is precisely why she has become and will remain, such an iconoclast. As an immigrant, none of our ingrained cultural expectations have been imprinted on her mind. She has always seen other First Ladies from without - not within. And as a result, Melania is free to define and refine her role as she sees fit.

Some Americans, especially those who worship the state, do not like anyone with an independent spirit who thinks for themselves. However, whatever point of view one chooses to view this most exotic member of the White House’s private residence from, her most enduring legacy may ultimately be as the ideal example of the American dream.

She is the living proof of the promises of our nation.

Donald Trump respects Melania. Deeply. In a way that has rarely, if ever, been seen elsewhere in his personal or professional life as President. It is this respect for her strength that allows Melania to accept the position of First Lady on her terms. Not America’s. Not her husband’s. Hers. And that kind of autonomy isn’t something that happens often in any White House.

A modern-day First Lady with a strength of will that deserves the respect of our entire nation.

Maybe someday she’ll get it.

Either way, she will be who she is, NOT what we want her to be.

I spoke with Cherie, and what began as an interview ended as a wonderful new friendship....

Obviously with your talent it was destiny that you became a singer. What inspired you to choose country music?

Thank you.... I grew up singing all different genres but country kind of went back to my roots, Southern gospel music. I grew up in evangelism with my family. We sang country and southern gospel songs in the morning and then at night, because my parents originated in the theater, they incorporated that into our ministry. They would write original musicals for us to do. Then on the long drive from church to church I only listened to country music. So for me, I sang country before I sang anything else. It feels like home.

It’s like comfort food for me. It is a genre where I can just let my hair down and just let it fly. I loved doing musical theater growing up and I love singing pop music, and all different kinds of music, but I had to pay attention to certain things like my vowels and things like that. So, country music was the only genre that was 100% me. I don’t have to pay attention to any particular thing, it’s just authentic.

I love to interview country artists because all of you seem to have a cool story.

That is interesting. I have never even thought about that.

Country music feels so popular now.

It is. It’s such a broad genre, there’s traditional country, forms of pop country, now there is urban country. There are many different flavors in there which for me is so fantastic because once again it lets me be creative and have freedom. I don’t feel like I have to conform in any way. I can just be myself and write what I want to write, how I want to write and sing it how I want to sing it. I’m not sure that country would’ve been the best fit for me years ago simply because I think I would’ve really had to try and conform a little bit more and maybe not be quite as authentic. Like other genres, I would’ve had to pay attention to things a little bit more. So, I love the fact that country is such a broad ranged genre, with different genres within it. I think that country music allows more artistic freedom.

I feel like you have such a strong voice that you could sing anything. I also know that country is popular in the UK. What are your thoughts about touring internationally?

I love history. I’m such a history buff and so I love traveling and seeing the world. I love being with different cultures and soaking it all in. It’s such a big part of being a songwriter. You’re inspired by things and so yes, I’ve been dying to.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Indiana, in a little town called Crawfordsville. It’s hilarious because I have no idea where it is. Someday I’ll venture there and see what it’s like and actually be able to talk about it. I was just born there but we went into full-time evangelism on my third birthday. We traveled and traveled. Then I got spotted by an agent when I was four years old in Atlanta, and then I got a manager in New York. Then we would route auditions for television or theater or just whatever on the way to our next destination to the next revival or whatever it was that we were doing.

You started super, super young.

Yeah. I’ve had people ask me what made me want to be a singer and I have to tell them that I don’t know anything else. I don’t remember ever doing anything else. I don’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. I was a weird kid. I would wake up and sing and I would do it all day long. If I played with dolls then my dolls sang. If I played with any toys they sang. If I drew pictures it was of me performing on the stage. So everything I did revolved around being a singer. It was so weird being so young and so obsessed with it.

I was passionate about it. It was just my whole world. My poor parents, I don’t know how they put up with it.

You really were literally destined.

Yeah. I don’t know how they did it, they never told me to stop. I grew up kind of all over. We had houses at different points in different places, but we weren’t really there very much. But it’s been amazing. I got to be in Jersey for a while, New York for a while, Georgia, Florida.... so I feel like I can relate to a lot of people. I feel like I can have a conversation with a brick wall. I feel pretty blessed to be able to do that. The only time it’s a bad thing

is when strangers come up and then they vomit their life to you. That happens. It’s a compliment.

You seem to be completely positive and so is your new song.

I feel like the world is a dark enough place. I am totally all about pointing out things that can be frustrating, upsetting, and depressing but I definitely don’t write Debbie downers. I feel like you should have something that has a bit of hope to it. There is nothing wrong with shedding light on things that are going on in life or your friend’s life or the world that are upsetting, but if there is something we can say to the listener that’s going through it that might help them hang on another day.... that’s my whole thing and it’s funny that you picked up on that.

I think that country singers have a lot of power because people expect a story line from their songs.

They really do. I mean, I think that all musicians do but country music is really blowing up. I think country singers are held in a different degree, more than other genres. They are expected to be honest. I think they are expected to have authenticity with their songwriting and who they are as an artist. I feel with other genres you can sometimes test what sort of a character that you can become, and I’m not saying that in a negative way. I just think country is all about authenticity.

So, I totally see that and agree with it.

what would you want to happen?

I like that question. Well it would be huge. It would be a massive, massive stage. I would have a huge band. I would have six back-up singers that all have choreographed moves. I would have a horn section. I would have two fiddle players because fiddles are my favorite country instrument. I would have millions and millions and millions of people that if I pull the mic away and held it to the audience, they would sing every word.

I love that fantasy and I think soon it will be a fantasy come true.

Don’t we alI want to go to that fantasy? I’m definitely working towards it. That’s why I am totally open. That place for me, it might be in America, it might be in Germany, it might be in Ireland, London. You don’t know where your music is going to strike a nerve. So, don’t put any boundaries on it and just go for it. Let your music speak to people. Maybe it’s the way I was raised in evangelism. You just want to reach out and help everybody. My music does that.

I can see that. If you could have me ask you any question in the world, what question would that be?

I think you can put this in the form of a question.

I think the timing of everything that is happening for me is kind of bizarre.

Describe what you mean by Bizarre?

I think country singers tell a story better and clearer sometimes than other genres.

Thank you. I mean I hope it continues. That is definitely the roots of country music. I think for a little while it kind of got overly saturated with some sort of surface songs if you will. I think that we’ve definitely pulled away from that and gotten closer to the essence of country music, which is so much more than trucks in mud and countrified food.

There is so much more to talk about and sing about. Those things are great and they’re fun, and they are definitely an escape that we need, but there is also a need for songs that are going to talk about deeper things that country music has always done. I think that’s really dominating the genre now.

If you could have your ultimate stage fantasy

Why didn’t this happen for me when I was 16? I was totally ready for it then. Why didn’t it happen for me when I was 18? Or why did it happen for me so many years later. Now I have a daughter and life is a bit more complicated. I look at different artists that are getting signed right now and they’re younger, and maybe just getting married but they are just in a totally different place. I am so thankful that I can talk about a whole lot of stuff that nobody else can really talk about. I know what it’s like to be a mom, a wife, for a while now.

I know the ups and downs of a career financially.

I know what it’s like to feel when nobody would write Country songs for a woman, and I wasn’t an artist in the ring yet. I know what it’s like to watch people make horrible mistakes and then make incredible decisions that change people’s lives and learn from everything along the way. I

feel like I have so much to say and I’m so grateful that the timing is now for me. Is it a little bit more complicated? Yes, totally. But I feel like I can relate to so many people. Their lives are so complicated.

Most people are juggling a million things and figuring out how to make it work. Most people don’t have the luxuries of nannies and millions of dollars, without needing a job. I feel like I can relate to I guess the average mom. The average person who is trying to make it. The ones who are pounding their heads against the pavement and who are frustrated. I can speak to a really wide range of women out there. I’m so thankful for that

because I don’t see that with a lot of artists that are signed right now.

I can answer that question for you. It’s because the universe came together now for you instead of when you were 16 or 18.

Right! I’m so grateful, I really am because I look at when I was younger who did I idolize? I think that it is incredible that we have people like Taylor Swift for the young girls who need someone their age to identify with. I kind of miss seeing quite frankly a lot of grown women that are telling stories through

their music and speaking about things that they are passionate about, not because they are on TV but because they have experienced it. I think it is a totally different place when you can say “look, this is what I’ve lived, this is what I know, I can relate to you and you can relate to me. We are one in the same.” I’m grateful for that I am so grateful to have all of this happening for me right now. cherieoakley.com

Festival of Flowers L.E.A.F. LAUNCHES NEW YORK CITY

ince London has the Chelsea Flower Show, why shouldn’t New York have a similar floral extravaganza and floral love fest? That was the thinking of Moira Breslin, the owner of Articulate Productions, a communications company based in both London and New York.

Because when you have the savvy, organizational skills and contacts of Breslin, you know who to call.

A few months ago, Breslin contacted Lewis Miller, whose widely popular Flower Flash pop-up installations have started a trend throughout the United States, and the two discussed creating a city-wide festival of flowers. After all, New York is home to some of the greatest florists on the planet and is also a place that appreciates style and daring.

Pumped with adrenaline, she also made a call to Calvert Crary, the beloved Yoda-like teacher who is the executive director of FlowerSchool NY. He listened to her passionate pitch for the L.E.A.F. event, which is what she named the week-long floral event, and he also signed on.

Talk about a slam dunk.

Thus New York is enjoying floral displays June 11 and 12 at various locations including Rockefeller Plaza, the Crosby Street Hotel and Flower School NY. And next year, a full-blown New York Flower Week.

What appealed to these admired leaders of the industry is that many talented florists produce works of art for their corporate and personal clients that the public doesn’t see. But L.E.A.F. is for all New Yorkers, as well as for the thousands of tourists who visit the Big Apple in June.

Miller, whose press clips are piling up as high as a New York skyscraper, started Flower Flash to give back to the city that had launched his prolific career. With stealth-like precision, he and his team take floral discards from his posh events and plant them in unsuspecting places, like a New York trash can bursting with roses, to the delight of passersby.

Furthermore, these installations are an opportunity to showcase up-and-coming talent who are drawn to a career linking nature and art.

Soon other professionals signed on, including the creative agency East Olivia as well as B Floral and Cape Lily.

“Today, the world of Floriculture is in full bloom,” says Breslin. “I am so pleased to present L.E.A.F., our city-wide festival of Flowers. It’s an opportunity for all New Yorkers to come together and enjoy the beauty of nature.”

This year is considered a soft launch. The official launch is 2020. Breslin wanted to start small and then expand where she will welcome many other floral professionals.

In fact, the Crosby Street Hotel is offering a collection of floral-inspired pastries through June 16, which is not surprising. Designer Kit Kemp, who owns the Crosby Street Hotel with her husband, has admired Miller’s work for decades.

“I’ve been hiring him to do our flowers since I first started,” Kemp told me when I interviewed her on her floral interior designs.

Kemp was happy to be on board with this project thanks to Miller.

FlowerSchool NY, which is located at 213 West 14th Street, is stretching their considerable talents and created a stunning outdoor installation as part of their participation. It will also be accompanied by an al-fresco Flower Shop selling bouquets for just $10 instead of $25. These displays can be seen from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 11 and 12.

Joe’s Jeans, on 83 Mercer Street, will have an outdoor installation designed by B Floral which should be both

whimsical and vibrant.

Aesop, on 232 Elizabeth Street, will be adorning their store with bouquets of luscious blooms as will Cape Lily at The Source at 651 West 175th Street.

Last but not least, one may remember that Lewis Miller did oversee the bouquet-arranging tutorial for Meghan Markle’s baby shower here in New York.

La Ligne on 996 Madison Avenue will be giving away Lewis Miller’s hand-tied baby bouquets with a purchase and also offering a limited edition of a floral painted pochette.

Pretty wonderful, isn’t it? Plus, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Central Park Conservancy.

All these installations and efforts share the most important ingredient. Coming together through a love of flowers and wanting to make many people very very happy. I’m hoping to see some white carnations in some of these creatively inspired installations.

Movie, Movies and More Movies

don’t know what CNN does these days because I don’t watch it. To be fair I also don’t watch FOX, CNBC, MSNBC or any other news channel if there are others. At one time CNN had travel shows, science technology programs, fashion segments and entertainment news. That is where I came in as Senior Entertainment Correspondent. A big part of the job was going to movies. Lots of movies. Retirement came in 2002 and with plenty of time on my hands, I went to movies.

Lots of movies.

Out of the blue an old friend who happened to own a multiplex mentioned he needed some help and here I am today managing a movie theatre. It’s like having your very own eight screen home theatre with first run films. Okay! you do have to let strangers in and occasionally sweep up, but hey this is a movie fan’s dream gig. Well, maybe owning the theatre would be better.

Now you know my qualifications let’s talk about global warming. Just kidding. Let’s talk movies.

Skipping “The Avengers,” which as everyone knows kicked off the summer box office by breaking all records and among others starred Samuel L. Jackson, but he’s in every

film so we won’t talk anymore about either “The Avengers” or Sam Jackson. Sam is what his friends call him, I think.

and just impress your co-workers around the water cooler with your unique knowledge. Do offices still have water coolers?

It seems for all “The Avengers” did to clean up the world and the box office bucks it wasn’t enough, Spider-Man had to show up, again with Sam Jackson. Darn, we weren’t going to mention him. “Spider-Man Far From Home” scored really big at the box office, of course, not as big as “The Avengers.”

If you are the box office total type, “Spider-Man, Far From Home” brought in almost 200-million dollars in its first weekend. That means in studio speak, the film has “legs.” That also is a clever thing to say when you are writing an article like this, “Spider-Man has legs…”

Coming up with clever adjectives really helps this kind of thing. One of my favorites was, “unspools.” Example, “Spiderman is expected to capture a huge audience when it unspools this weekend.” Sadly, digital projection has made the word useless unless you are writing an article about sewing.

Does anybody remember when people went to the movies without looking at what it made at the box office or it’s Rotten Tomatoes score?

While it seems everyone wants to know box office totals they don’t want to hear “spoilers.”

In case you don’t know about them, they are things that give away the plot or other tid-bits about the film you can only learn with the price of admission.

Here’s one, in “Spider-Man, Far From Home” two of the characters walk past a car with the license plate “463”. That is because the character of Sandman who is about to appear, first showed up in the comic book “Amazing Spider-Man” No. 4 back in 1963. Ah Ha! Spoiler.

From Spider-Man to “Rocketman.” How was that for a transition?

Recently, we had two women in their 60’s come out of one of the auditoriums complaining they were in the wrong theatre. For 45 minutes they were watching “Toy Story 4” when they wanted to see “Rocketman.” What finally gave it away?

Nobody was singing any Elton John songs?

It didn’t look like Elton in that cowboy suit?

bet my huge manager’s salary these two are not Academy voters. Speaking of “Rocketman” I was surprised to learn that Elton John was an Executive Producer of this film. No wonder he liked it so much. Just for the record most of the audience liked it too. Although I don’t think it will be Oscar material. My opinion.

I took all kinds of grief for not liking “Yesterday.”

That’s the one about a struggling singer who becomes a megastar singing Beatles songs. Why? Because according to the story, Jack Malik, the singer played by Himesh Patel bumps his head and wakes up in a world where nobody ever heard of the Fab Four. My problem is the film never makes it clear that he is dreaming all of this. There are many other plot holes in “Yesterday” but this hasn’t stopped it from being a hit. I think folks just enjoy hearing those great songs even if the Beatles aren’t singing them. Lily James as Ellie the girl who loves Jack is terrific. She is the long suffering girl back home hoping one day Jack will come to his senses. Add to that, Ed Sheeran as himself and nobody could have played it better.

“Booksmart” I did like, a lot. Sadly it had an “R” rating. A story of two high school girls and their comedic misadventures trying to “fit in” had a rating that wouldn’t let those under 18 in to see it.

That was the audience for this very funny movie.

Some stuffy adults, wouldn’t find “Booksmart” either interesting or funny. Hip young adults might. This is the kind of thing that makes one happy for Netflix and Amazon. Check it out, a large audience for this film is long overdue.

Certainly some of the summer films have been left out and there are a few more “Coming Attractions.” Disney’s “The Lion King” may give “The Avengers” and “Spider-Man” a run for the money. Who are we kidding, Disney will make a fortune with this one.

Personally, the film I’m looking forward to the most is Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.” Having only read blurbs about it and seeing the trailer numerous times. It takes place in the summer of 1969 when Hollywood to many, like myself, was a gazillion miles away and movie stars hit the hot spots and partied the night away. At least until the night of August 9th. when Charles Manson’s followers changed all that. Don’t need to tell the whole story. I can tell you that friends who lived there at the time told me how it all changed after that. Maybe that’s what makes even the “Once Upon A Time” title so appealing.

While we are in the summer of 69’ let me remind you, as if I need to, of the moon landing. Now streaming or available somewhere, everything is, check out “Apollo 11.” Most likely one of the best documentaries ever made. Actual footage so impressive you might think it was created by movie magic and there are some that still believe that. I like to think it was all real. You will love this film, I promise. When Neil Armstrong sets foot on the lunar surface and says those immortal words, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” you will get the chills. Although it was Buzz Aldrin who really had the best line and nobody ever caught it until now. As he was about

to climb the ladder down to meet Armstrong, he casually throws out the ad-lib, “I’m just making sure I don’t lock the door behind me….”

It would have been a whole different ending.

GLAMOUR, GALE, AND GROUPTHINK DÎNER EN BLANC

BY JADAN HORYN magine a scene from the classic chef-d’œuvre Seurat painting: Un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte. Now replace the 19th century, Parisians, and the River Seine with the 21st Century, New Yorkers, and the Hudson - and you have a near-complete picture of 2019 Dîner en Blanc.

Glamorous and chic, sophisticated and highbrow - while simultaneously laborious and frustrating, DIY and tempestuous - It is the height of French glamour and French groupthink.

Begun in 1988 by François Pasquier and a small intimate group of friends, Dîner en Blanc has grown to over 88 cities on six continents.

The basic premise is predicated on exclusivity, known as “the world’s most famous secret dinner party.” Guests dressed in white - the de rigueur attire - rove the streets on their way to a mystery locale. To attend you must have attended before, be sponsored by a prior attendee, or join a long waitlist that doesn’t guarantee attendance.

Glamorous and chic, yet laborious and frustrating - It is the height of French glamour and groupthink.

Guests schlep their own tables, chairs, linens, tableware, and decorations to the dinner or buy their way into a VIP area where they don’t have to do a thing, which in some cities includes complimentary attendance to the media.

This is perhaps the central conceit in the coverage of Dîner en Blanc. The often fawning reporting is due to the fawning treatment of media; a façade to the reality of the work of the participants.

While many participants would argue that the DIY aspect keeps the sophisticated event grounded in a certain charming way. It nonetheless presents a variety of major drawbacks.

The creation of a sense of fraternity at the expense of normal conveniences is, of course, a French value, but it also obscures the absurdity of groupthink.

French sociologist Gustave le Bon once observed this about crowds: “Crowds are somewhat like the sphinx of ancient fable: It is necessary to arrive at a solution of the problems offered by their psychology or to resign ourselves to being devoured by them.”

And devoured one is by Dîner en Blanc, to arrive at the mystery location, one must traverse the city on foot in a group while carrying all of their belongings. Of course, chaos ensues supposedly another of the events little charms - but also it’s central failing. It is an exercise in panache collectivism that can only be done by the French - one is left with another apt observation of Le Bon: “Anarchy is everywhere when responsibility is nowhere to be found.”

The coup de grace of 2019’s event was the gale that blew in as a force majeure. The image of thousands of people dressed in white - drenched and frantically gathering their belongings - gave a sense of thrill, adventure, and utter hysteria. It was a real espirit de corps -that the event otherwise would have lacked.

The glamour, gale, and groupthink that was 2019 Dîner en Blanc created a lasting memory of abject absurdity and sublime sophistication. As the French say, c’est la vie.

Christina Ochoa KEY TO UNRAVELING THE SERIES’ MYSTERY

t’s impossible to consume and be aware of all the new television shows that are released in a given year. With more channels than ever before, not to mention a growing number of streaming services, its easy to miss series that air on cable networks, which means you may not notice talents like Christina Ochoa, who plays Ashley on A Million Little Things, whose profile has steadily grown over the past few years with major roles on multiple television series on smaller networks.

ABC’s A Million Little Things centers on a group of friends, but Ashley is not one of those friends — certainly not at the beginning of the series.

Ashley was the assistant of Jon (Ron Livingston), core member of the show’s central friend group, before he committed suicide. Jon’s sudden death will surely connect Ashley to Jon’s friends, and his widow Delilah (Stephanie Szostak), and may cause people to wonder if Ashley and Jon’s relationship was strictly professional or more than that.

Ashley may not be part of the show’s central friend group, but is instrumental in unravelling the mystery at the shows’ core. In an interview with Fanfest, Ochoa explains that Ashley “is a little bit of a mystery and will remain so for a while. She’s the only one who holds that key to unraveling the reason why John killed himself.”

A Million Little Things marks the first major network role for Ochoa, who has played recurring or main roles on three separate television series since 2016, before coming to A Million Little Things. She plays the recurring role of Renn Randall on the TNT crime drama Animal Kingdom, starred as the lead role of Nora Madani on The CW drama Valor, and portrayed the role of Grace D’Argento on the SyFy show Blood Drive which dared to ask the question “what if cars could run on blood?” A Million Little Things doesn’t feature the crime, guns, or man-eating cars of her previous work, serving as a relatively tame showcase for the actress.

Christina Ochoa’s recent television resume is impressive, but her interests extend well beyond acting. In addition to acting, Ochoa is also a passionate student of all things scientific, having hosted the Know Brainer podcast and joining the advisory board for marine advocacy organization Oceana, per Fanfest.

Ochoa recently told reporters that she balances her acting work with scientific endeavors, saying “I work more in sci-comm when I’m on hiatus and focus more on punctual philanthropic work while I’m shooting.”

Ochoa’s scientific background likely won’t come into play during her performance as Ashely on A Million Little Things, but anything is possible considering how mysterious her character is. While Ochoa has been balancing a variety of different television roles for the past few years, it’s possible that Ashley could be the role that helps Ochoa find an audience among viewers who want to know the truth about what happened to Jon. If the show doesn’t come back for another season, however, it seems that Ochoa doesn’t have much difficulty finding new television projects to work on, given her impressive recent track record.

BOLD TV FOUNDER DISCUSSES PRESIDENT TRUMP’S RE-ELECTION CHANCES

BY SAMANTHA MASTER & ADAM KLUGER Q: What do you believe are some of the key issues for the 2020 Presidential election?

A: Oh lots of issues, so healthcare is a hot button topic right now, the question of how much intervention we want in the healthcare marketplace, the question of inequality is a big hot topic, it’s something that we see Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren talking a lot about on the left and then President Trump saying with his tax plan and all the things he’s done with economic reform and deregulation that this is helping the average person and it’s actually helping lift wages for people who are at the bottom. So which reality is real and that’s going to be what the debate is about.

Q: What do you think are some of Donald Trump’s greatest successes so far since he has become President?

A: I am a big Trump supporter, but Bold is a bipartisan brand so what I am about to say is with the disclosure that this is Carrie talking and we don’t have a democrat here to debate me but you should come back and interview one of our democratic co hosts. But, for me, what I really admire about what Trump has done on many fronts is from an economics standpoint. I was just looking at what he has been doing for poverty and the poverty rates among women.

The first year Trump was president there were about 600,000 young women who were lifted out of poverty- that’s remarkable. Now at this point more than 3.1 million jobs have been created for 88 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

women in this economy since he won. It’s been incredible to see this economic growth. I believe the tax reform is part of that. I was very outspoken in favor of it, a lot of what he’s been doing for the economy has been really great. For me, that is one of the top indicators that he should be re-elected.

Q: What are some other things that you think he’s done well for the economy specifically?

A: Deregulation is a big issue that I don’t think gets enough attention. Regulation is the silent killer, and when you deregulate, you help eliminate a lot of the extra costs. I’ve seen this with building a business here with Bold. Everything you have has a cost. Across the board, Trump has been a leader in helping to deregulate across the industry and helping to make it easier to open a business and be an entrepreneur.

Q: So if you were to give Trump a report card, you would say he’s doing pretty well?

A: It’s funny we actually did give him a report card here for his first 100 days in office, and it’s interesting I actually think he’s done better now. I think he’s grown even more in office and continued to do more. The supreme court judges that he picked, I was very excited about and I think that helped motivate me as a conservative and I’m sure that helped motivate people on the left side too. I think that will be a big issue that we’ll probably see in 2020 is the judges and we’ll see who the Democrats are and who is going to be on their list for their judges.

Q: What do you think about his prospects for his second term and some of the goals that he has in the future and moving forward?

A: I think this is a very interesting question because as we know 2016 polling was so off. So if you look at the polling right now at President Trump versus Biden, he is losing. He is doing better, tied, or around the same to Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren but he is losing to Biden in most polls.

The thing is, I don’t think people can put much stock in polling when it comes to Trump. A lot of people feel so bullied that they can’t even support Trump verbally because to a pollster or a family member they can’t say it, but when they’re in the privacy of the voting booth they will pull that trigger so I think the polling for Trump is very interesting. Also the question of approval of Trump is a very interesting question because he is a very interesting personality so approving him for all that he is may be a little hard because maybe you disagree with who he is but you agree with some of his policies. The word approve is such a hard word for such a complex man. I think there could be a social stigma in some parts of the country if you speak out.

Q: What do you make of Donald Trump’s relationship with Kim Jong Un? A: It’s obviously very historic to have a president go to the DMZ and cross the DMZ. I spent some time as a journalist for the Washington Times and I did cross over into the DMZ into North Korea when I was there. I was there in 2009 and

to think now that a president is there embodies a lot of who Trump is. He is a risk taker and there is certainly a risk in what he’s doing. Some people say that he’s elevating this small backwater dictatorship, but part of what I think he’s doing is being a counterweight to China because China has been the big patron saint of North Korea.

When you have the US coming in and saying to this nuclear power or country who has the power of building nuclear weapons, ‘We’re going to build this relationship with you and we want you to stop building your nuclear weapons because this economy is terrible.” What’s interesting is that, relative to his father, the younger Korean leader seems to be much more open to economic reforms than his father was. Economic priorities seem to matter to him much more than they did to his father. I think that is what Trump sees as a businessman and I think that’s what he’s hoping for is that he will be able to bring some economic reforms and in exchange be able to denuclearize North Korea.

Q: What do you think about Trump levying tariffs as a strategy?

A: This is interesting because I actually didn’t vote for President Trump in 2016 as a conservative, I’m a convert. As far as to your questions on tariffs, that was part of what I didn’t like about him was what he was saying about tariffs. I thought a traditional conservative economic policy is that tariffs are bad and that they are basically a tax on the people. The more I have looked at this the more that I have been open to the idea. China and Europe have already been placing tariffs on us for decades and none of our prior presidents have stood up. Trump’s using it as a means and not as an end and I think that’s what I didn’t grasp in 2016 was that he was using this as a negotiating tactic not as an end in and of itself.

Q: Going towards the other side of the aisle with the Democrats, who do you think poses the greatest threat for Donald Trump currently?

A: I think Joe Biden. He has the most appeal for the working class voters who crossed over in those districts. The voters who had previously voted for Barack Obama and then they crossed over to vote for Donald Trump and I think that Biden’s Union appeal and his working-class shtick and his approach is more accessible and he’s someone who can go toe to toe with President Trump. I think that what happened on the first debate, the way he was attacked on all fronts by all candidates and that’s to be expected when you’re the front runner is very interesting. I think that Kamala

Harris and the way she went so forcefully after him was very interesting because it was fascinating that she would attack him in this way. Again, the man who served under the first black president for 8 years, and where was Kamala Harris at that time? When it was politically convenient for her to keep her mouth shut and not go after him, where was the outcry? To me, it just shows how far left the democratic has shifted and I find that troubling.

Q: Do you think there are any potential OR unannounced candidates that would have a chance to take out Joe Biden and become the top Democratic candidate?

A: I thought the most reasonable candidate to me was Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg, to me were the most reasonable. I couldn’t vote for either of them. For someone that is on the right, I could see them pulling more people over from undecided camp that they would be more reasonable. But I think again the democratic has shifted so hard left that they wouldn’t be palatable enough. I think Mayor Bloomberg knows he could not stand up to the human hurricane that is Donald Trump in terms of his ability to drive the news cycle and control the conversation not to mention to me the most important thing is the President’s results. I think for a lot of people they want to see change and to go back to status quo I don’t want to go back there.

Q: What do you think about Trump and his strengthening the relationship with Israel?

A: Well I wasn’t there long but I was briefly a correspondent for the Jerusalem Post in Israel so I covered the Israeli Knesset which is the parliament. I was there during the Obama administration and it was interesting to see how much the Israeli people were angry towards the Obama administration and felt that this was an unprecedented US president who was really turning their back on a democracy, really the only democracy in the middle east where LGBT rights are accepted, where the beaches of Tel Aviv make you feel like you were on Fire Island here in New York. To turn your back on that democracy that is under existential threat every single day by murderous regimes who have no respect for human rights. Iran for example where you can be hanged for being gay and I understand it has to do with the roots of the Palestinian Israeli conflict but having spent some time in Palestine as well to see that the intransigence of the extremism that is so prevalent by the Palestinian leadership and how they are really holding back their own people from progress. That Hamas which runs Palestine

has its founding charter which is to destroy all Jews. I don’t know how you can have a peace conversation when that is your mantra that you want to murder all Jews. How is that in any way any moral equivalency? A lot of Israelis felt that way about the Obama administration and I know that it’s been refreshing to have someone who is robustly and strongly defending Israel. I just find it so interesting that American Jews have heard it said that Israel is a red state and American Jews are a blue state. We were talking red state blue state and how so many American Jews are so liberal and they don’t understand what Israel represents and I hope that they will reconsider.

Q: What else has Trump gotten right and what more does he need to do?

I think in foreign policy what he’s done with ISIS, defeating the caliphate, that was obviously very important. Rebuilding the relationship with Poland- this is something that I found so ironic about Russia, Trump has been so much more strongly positioning the United States against Russia than Barack Obama and other predecessors. For example, by rebuilding the Polish missile defense system which Obama wanted to scale back and guess who doesn’t like what Trump’s doing there? Putin. Same thing with the Ukraine, that Obama sent the Ukrainian troops night goggles and refused to arm them and President Trump is arming the Ukrainians. President Trump has allowed for far greater energy independence by allowing for expanded drilling that helps lower energy prices here, we can take more road trips this summer, but we can also be less dependent on foreign oil and we can have a more competitive oil market because Russia is basically a petrostate which means that its entire economy is so dependent on oil. So when the US is a more competitive player in the marketplace, that hurts Russia. He also expelled Russian ambassadors in ways that have never been seen by other administrations. To me, actions speak louder than words. I’ve given the analogy from a dating perspective. If you were dating a guy and he told you he loved you but then his actions said otherwise- he cheated on you, he abused you, but he would always say things, but his actions said otherwise. Versus someone who maybe didn’t necessarily know how to say I love you, didn’t know how to sweet talk you, didn’t know how to charm you, but the actions kept showing over and over how much he cared about you and how much he wanted to protect your future and to help your economic future.

College Train Wreck TOOLS AND TIPS FOR GETTING BACK ON TRACK FOR A HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL LIFE INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN RUDIN, MD, FOUNDER OF PEAK YEAR Q: You coined the term “College Train Wreck” after the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported that one third of all firstyear students dropped out of college between Thanksgiving and Christmas break in 2018. And you have a book in the works related to the topic.

What do you consider a College Train Wreck?

A: The term refers to a cumulative circumstance, not to the students themselves. Many of our students arrive on campus depressed, stressed, in therapy or in need of it, and on meds. Some of them wonder if they will be needed in the future or have the right skills for it. Finally, classes begin: they don’t plan well, have difficulty handling the scheduling, the responsibility, the social and sexual freedoms, the access to alcohol and drugs, as well as the specific rules of behavior expected of them. A College Train Wreck is almost inevitable. The forthcoming book explores how this occurs and shares tools and tips for getting back on track for a happy and successful life.

Q: Can you share a few of the factors in a student’s life before college begins that may contribute to an eventual Train Wreck once they arrive in college?

A: Getting on the wrong life-train, so to speak, can begin quite early for students. Parents, not to except myself, are in part responsible for contributing to the problem. Our children and young adults are overscheduled, overprepared for tests, and have the goal of presenting an “image of themselves” instead of fully preparing for the current and future world. We are all too familiar with tiger parenting, helicopter parenting, and lawnmower parenting.

Parents following any of these strategies can end up placing their child on a life-train that may inevitably lead to a College Train Wreck.

Q: Is it only parents bringing about this circumstance?

A: Of course not, and I’m a major advocate for parents. There are many other factors. Education is one. Our schools long ago reduced many activities such as Dance, Art, Shop, Music, and Martial Arts that can help students develop Executive Function capacities critical for focus, following complex directions, dealing with new information, planning, reasoning, using creativity, organizing, and selfmonitoring. And students themselves spend far too much time on screens, using digital shortcuts for everything with too little time in nature, with humanity, or helping with the challenges we face daily. I was on Kate Delaney’s America Tonight, a nationally syndicated radio program, discussing this problem with her. Not long after, I gave it a name, College Train Wreck (www.CollegeTrainWreck.com), and identified what I believe is a major underlying vulnerability these students have. I also offered some tools and techniques for getting back on track.

Q: Is there a name for the underlying vulnerability?

A: Underdeveloped neurocognitive skills-Executive Function Skills, as well as Mindfulness, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience, and Flow. These can be mentored and acquired, helping students to pursue their passion and turn it into meaningful purpose, giving them the focus, attention, and calm they need. This brings less reactivity, more responsiveness,

personal sangfroid, a better ability to navigate new and complex situations like college, an ability to make wiser choices (including choosing the authentically right college for them), and greater personal happiness.

Q: What do you suggest vulnerable students do before, during, and after a College Train Wreck?

A: The book, College Train Wreck: Tools and Tips for Getting Back on Track for a Happy and Successful Life, will be very helpful for students in all three circumstances. Beyond this, three years ago, anticipating the problem, we founded two organizations to mentor transformative neurocognitive skills. EFCNY (The Executive Function Center of New York, EFCNY.com) supports students ages 7-20 to acquire these skills before college. Peak Yeak (PeakYearExperience.com) helps students with all that is necessary after being in a College Train Wreck.

Q: Before we go, can you share just a few of those first few tips for surviving the Train Wreck?

A: My pleasure: 1) By whatever means necessary, get off the train, 2) sleep, 3) as the Navy SEALs say, get up and make your own bed, 4) begin doing 20 minutes of mindfulness meditation in the same place first thing every morning and at night, 5) do something nice or helpful for someone around the house, 6) begin journaling and walking daily, and 7) if you need professional emotional help or mentoring to help guide you, ask for it.

Sculpture of Benedict Tatti

enedict Tatti demonstrated a marked talent for art at an early age. He initially studied stone and wood carving under the skilled Louis Slobodkin and Attillio Piccirelli, going on to teach adult classes with the Teachers Project of the W.P.A. and attend the Art Students League under William Zorach and Ossip Zadkin. Tatti then became Zorach’s assistant, learning from the sculptor in his daily work.

He began to exhibit his early works at the ACA Gallery, Puma Gallery, Weyhe Gallery and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under the Artists for Victory Show in 1942. During the early years of World War II, he worked at the Brooklyn Navy yard as a welder and was drafted in 1943 into the US Army Air Force. He won first prize for

his sculpture, “Soldier”, in the National Soldier Art Competition, which was exhibited at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C. and the Chicago Art Institute.

In the early 50’s, he studied at the Hans Hofmann school, which led to his long association with the industrial design firm Raymond Loewy Associates. He executed many models as a sculptor, both for architectural projects and consumer/industrial-end products, additionally serving as a color design consultant.

During the decade of the ‘60’s, with the development of Abstract Expressionism, Tatti began to work directly in bronze and metal. In l963, he was appointed to a teaching position at the High School of Art & Design, where he taught sculpture for the next 15 years.

The artist actively exhibited and executed several commissions during his lifetime, ever committed to exploring his craft and testing the limits of his own artistic creativity. His work was exhibited in Paris, Tokyo, New York City, Northeast Harbor, Munich, London, Finland, Amsterdam, Belgium, Santa Fe, among others, both individually and in group showings.

Sculpture by Benedict Tatti is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, American Numismatic Society, USDAN Center for Performing Arts, Art Students League, Monhegan Museum and Dunbarton Oaks.

Tatti’s work will be on view as part of AMERICAN MODERNISM 1915-1985, on view at Graham Shay 1857 through June 28th.

he global art fair circuit now has literally hundreds of fairs to choose from, so how does one know to pick and choose in the world of Instagram, Facebook and more? I made the decision to venture to Vienna to explore the art fair everyone had been buzzing about! With mega international art collectors such as the Don and Mera Rubell, Beth DeWoody and Amir Shariat and many more arriving for the fair’s VIP vernissage, I thought to myself why not see what the noise and excitement was all about for myself!

Collectors, Art Lovers, and travelers descend on this fair like bees to honey for an opening night filled with halls of contemporary art. I was thrilled they had graciously offered me a beautiful room in a top hotel and the lovely morning breakfast overlooking the entire city quickly captured my heart with echoes of the rich history, amazing art museums and the remarkable art fair named Viennacontemporary.

With more than 100 participating galleries from 25 countries and around 30,000 visitors every year, Viennacontemporary offers a unique insight into the vibrant contemporary art scene of Central and Eastern Europe.

I had the honor to sit down with two of the people who make the fair happen every year and get an insider’s view of the magic that makes it all happen. VIP Director Mia Legenstein and Katharina Appurg owner of TAKE A WALTZ, two dynamic art professionals, who have taken the city by storm peaking everyone’s curiosity worldwide to take a chance and visit Vienna.

The two have been involved with the fair since its inception working with VIPS while ushering all types of visitors toward the art fair. They tackled my rapid-fire interview with enthusiasm and care and gave us some rare insider tips one could never find in the tour books! Who can resist the special insider tip of the best place to be seen In

Vienna, which is at the 400-year-old bar called Schwarzes Kameel where Beethoven was seen hanging out!

Viennacontemporary has a very special selection of galleries, split in three thirds: the first is focused on very strong and internationally acting Austrian galleries, the second on Eastern European galleries and the third is international galleries looking to a Central European audience. This makes it a special place to discover galleries and artists one wouldn’t find at other art fairs.

Also, the fair showcases a very popular curated section called ZONE1 with solo booths of Austrian or Austrian-related artists under 40.

Additionally, each year we have a focus country with a big curated booth which is very well taken by established collectors. VC is especially known for its amazing VIP Program and VIP service. In only five days we organize around 300 events, many of them are very private and exclusive. viennacontemporary.at How do you view the importance of the art fairs in today’s current art market?

Art fairs provide a quick and comprised overview of the art market, and will as such remain a very important tool for presentation and networking with partners and peers. Nevertheless, the market is changing and there is a need for new, complimentary services around the art market. Other forms of networks connecting local expertise with an international audience will become more important than ever.

Where do you predict the art market will be in 10 years?

I wish I had a crystal ball to predict the future… the art market is an especially difficult one to predict.

We can already see the online art market is growing and probably we’ll be deep into blockchain and different cryptocurrencies. However, I believe that offline interaction will still be the most important and personal relationships will not come out of fashion.

How has your personal taste changed over the years?

My knowledge has definitely developed over the years and I have a better understanding of what I like and why. I have developed an appreciation for artworks that in the past I would have disapproved because I simply didn’t understand them. Art made me definitely more open-minded. In general, I am up for learning, understanding and supporting artists my age, my contemporaries.

Who or what has been your greatest inspiration?

While working in the arts I have met many inspiring people I admire. There are strong women who have been mentoring me and to who I look up to.

Surrounding yourself with artist friends is a constant inspiration, too!

— What artist discoveries can you share with our audience?

The city is definitely the best place to slow down and lose track of time. Whether you walk down the street and find yourself among century-old palazzos or sitting in historic coffee houses surrounded by a creative elite.

You can sit for hours, ordering one single coffee and get lost in reading the newspaper or a favorite book.

I love to shop at purveyors that already catered to the royal court. Lobmeyr, or traditional manufacturers like Muehlbauer are a must. My favorite place to have coffee is Cafe Prueckl right across the Museum of Applied Arts, it’s a beautiful salon where to meet interesting people. A stroll through the city center, visiting galleries such as Nächst St. Stephan, Krinzinger and Layr, Crone, Meyer Kainer, and Martin Janda.

The best place to be seen is at the 400-year-old bar of Schwarzes Kameel where already Beethoven was hanging out. Vienna nightlife is traditional, dark and long hours. The most original spot is Eden Bar where they’ll make you borrow a white dinner jacket and dance to an Asian Fusion disco band playing in the second generation already.

The party led to the club’s beautiful outside pool overlooking the fantastic view of the Vessel, another wondrous venture.

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION SOCIETY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2019 The WCS annual gala, one of New York City’s premiere social events of the summer, was held at the spectacular Central Park Zoo where 600 guests celebrated Conservation for a Sustainable Future and WCS’s impact on protecting the planet’s most ecologically important wild places and the extraordinary species that inhabit them.

Gala guests enjoyed a lively reception around the sea lion pool featuring décor by Lewis Miller Design, followed by a seated dinner prepared by Peter Callahan Catering. Dancing continued under the stars with music by DJ Chris Stiles.

The evening honored entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his longtime dedication to conservation, protecting the world’s oceans and coral reefs, and combatting climate change.

Said Michael R. Bloomberg: “We must do all we can to leave our planet healthier and stronger than we found it.

The Wildlife Conservation Society has been committed to that work for over 100 years. Thank you for this honor, and to everyone who has been a part of this mission – because your work is important now more than ever.”
