Some People Dream of Success… Others Wake Up and Work Hard for it

B

By Bobbie Catala | Photos by Filip Shobot

lanca Blanco is living proof that hard work and determination will get you EVERYWHERE. Born in Watsonville, California to immigrant parents, and YES, this is her birth name. Blanca was instilled with a strong work ethic at a very early age. Her dream for as long as she can remember, was to become an actress. But before she achieved her goal, and broke into the field of acting, there was a girl with perseverance, who overcame many obstacles. During our conversation, Blanca reflected on her early years, being one of five children, and having parents that worked multiple jobs to support the family, but still growing up poor. She believes that everyone is a product of their environment, but anyone can overcome difficulties. The actress feels these hard times are what shaped her into who she is today. When Blanca was nine years old, her family moved from California to Chelan Washington. Here, she took acting classes, and singing lessons, all while maintaining her schoolwork. Somehow this purposeful young lady

also managed to find the time to organize local theatrical performances. She also, along with her two brothers and two sisters, would reenact scenes from popular films for the amusement of her family. Blanca, in addition to wanting to be an actress, was steadfast in the importance of an education. She proudly told me she was the first Latino from her hometown to go to college. Blanca immediately attended Spoken Falls Community College after high school, where she earned an Associate of Science degree. From there, she received an impressive $80,000.00 in scholarships and transferred to Washington State University, going on to attain a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s degree in social work from Eastern Washington University. While in college Blanca worked as a therapist for government organizations, as well as for a rehabilitation center, in her hometown, for individuals newly released from prison. She also worked teaching Spanish. Blanca shared her experience of working at a hospice also, stating she was very “uncomfortable” yet found it extremely rewarding.

Having completed her education, she directly moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a successful actress. In Los Angeles, Blanca swiftly won her first acting role, a commercial for eye drops. Blanca’s first big break came in 2008, with a role in “Dark Reel”, a supernatural horror mystery film about the 1958 murder of actress Scarlett May, earning Blanca her first IMDV credit in a feature film. Blanco soon began acting with the Gordon Hunt Group. Here she studied with the acclaimed Gordon Hunt (twice nominated best director by the Director’s Guild of America) and performed in many stage productions. In addition to the Gordon Hunt Group, Ms. Blanco started training with Academy Award nominee actor’s Sally Kirkland, John Savage, and Bruce Glover. Blanca has trained intensively through the years, fine-tuning her craft, enabling her to take on various roles throughout her career. The actress has appeared in numerous films including “Spreading Darkness” (2010), with actors Eric Roberts and John Savage, “Bullet” (2014) with Danny Trejo, she also co-starred with Golden Globe nominated actor Steven Bauer in “Awakened” (2014). Some other movie credits include “Showgirls 2” (2011), “Anatomy of Deception” (2013), and “Crimes of the Mind” (2014). Blanco has appeared on ION television in “Defending Santa” (2013) and “Bermuda Tentacles”, which aired on SYFY in 2014. Blanca is dedicated to her craft, and is constantly striving to learn and reach new heights. The actress certainly keeps busy, and is currently working on the adaption of John Steinbeck’s “In Dubious Battle”, starring James Franco, Robert Duval, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston, Selena Gomez, and Danny McBride. Franco is also directing the film. The original novel portrays the struggle between labor and capital in the 1930’s as America is close to all out warfare. Blanca says she loves playing dramatic characters, and looks to some of her idols including Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, and Meryl Streep for inspiration. She is also currently working on a western called “The River”, produced by Eleanor Daily, and co-starring long time boyfriend John Savage.

This complex and determined young woman certainly is multi-faceted. She has transformed herself throughout her life. Blanca, until her mid 20’s was a tomboy, and considered herself a bit of a nerd. She didn’t wear any makeup, and disliked getting dressed up. She now indulges in Sue Wong, Versace, and Adriana Propel. The actress can rock the red carpet and cause a stir with her daring sense of fashion. She was named one of the top dressed at the Oscars by OK Magazine. Ms. Blanco reminisced about her debut walking the red carpet. She said she felt uncomfortable… until she arrived… then she immediately felt at home. At home in Malibu, Blanca enjoys her serene environment, and unwinds wearing beach clothes. Out of the celebrity scene, its t-shirt, beach pants, no makeup, all natural. She enjoys running, hiking, and spending time outdoors. This multi-talented actress is also an artist, making abstract style her genre. Her paintings are now being displayed at various art shows in California. When she’s relaxing you might catch her watching a movie starring one of her favorites… George Clooney. Blanca admires the style of Clooney and actor Vincent D’Onofrio, calling their style “organic”. The actress revealed that the one movie she can watch anytime is “The Notebook”, saying this beautiful story never gets old. Blanca Blanco does not take her success for granted and will not forget where she came from. This actress of Mexican-American descent remembers growing up poor, and was not going to allow her environment to determine who she was going to be, moving forward. This woman enjoys helping people and giving back to the community. She works with Lupus L.A., a hospice, and Casa L.A., that helps foster children. She experienced the benefits of charity first hand, having grown up in poverty. Additionally, Blanca works with Autism Speaks, AIDS society, Breast Cancer Alliance, and the American Cancer Society. Ms. Blanco is an expert in End of Life issues, becoming a leader in educating the issues of Death and Dying. Bianca is steadfast in her commitment to being all she can be, and is certainly doing the job very well!

MEET NEW YORK'S MOST ENTREPRENEURIAL WOMEN DALE NOELLE CEO of TRUE Model Management

D

By Carlos Lacayo | Photos by Chris Carroll Styling by Rachel D’Ruan | Produced by Carlos Lacayo

ale Noelle is the Founder and CEO of TRUE Model Management. For twenty years, she was a successful model, working with some of the most prominent fashion houses and popular brands like Oscar de la Renta, Oleg Cassini, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger and Nicole Miller. Over the years, Dale cultivated a robust network among the fashion elite and was regularly asked for referrals and advice. Shortly after becoming pregnant, Dale was diagnosed with cancer and her modeling career came to an abrupt halt. Despite her diagnosis and the anticipated challenges, she refused to let those sudden changes and obstacles define her future. She was confident in her skills and connections and immediately made the move from model to model manager. This was the beginning of TRUE Model Management. Headquartered in New York City with affiliates in Los Angeles and Hong Kong, TRUE continues to grow exponentially and actively recruits new models every day, worldwide. TRUE is known for providing models for some of the most in influential names in the industry such as Calvin Klein, DKNY, GAP, Ralph Lauren, Milly, Zac Posen, Alexander Wang, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria’s Secret. Dale’s passions for networking, modeling, philanthropy and empowering others continue to remain at the core of TRUE. From becoming a successful female entrepreneur to giving back and empowering others, Dale Noelle tells 25A Magazine how she manages to overcome obstacles and balance all of her endeavors and time.

Starting a business can be quite overwhelming and intimidating, let alone during pregnancy and amidst a diagnosis of cancer. Did you have a mentor, to help you through this process? I did not have a mentor to guide me specifically for TRUE Model Management, but however, my grandmother and my father were my life's mentors. From a very early age, they instilled a strong work ethic in me and always focused on the importance of supporting others. These lessons, combined with first-hand practical experience as a previous business owner and model, set me up to be successful in pursuing my dreams. Can you speak about your experience as a female business owner? What would you say is the greatest challenge? My experiences as a female business person in the modeling industry have all been very positive. However, when I worked and owned businesses in other industries, I needed to work extra hard to prove myself, earn respect for being smart and get men to look me in the eyes. TRUE was inspired by your passion for modeling and for networking and connecting with others. What advice do you have for someone interested in turning his/her passion into a business? My advice for others is to follow your heart, do your homework before starting your business and write a detailed plan. It is important to align yourself with honest business associates and intelligent, loyal employees. Knowledge of business laws, at least the basics in accounting and computer programming/ coding are helpful to know. To be successful as a businessperson you need to be aggressive and bold, while being kind and compassionate. Take calculated risks, be optimistic, resilient and persistent. Lastly, I’d recommend saving money and resting up for the ride! November 2016 | 45

25A What causes do you support and how does this compassion lend itself to your professional work? I strongly believe in giving back to communities and empowering others to further enrich the world. Philanthropy has always been very important to me personally and professionally, which is why I try to stay actively involved in many causes close to my heart. For the events that I host, I like to incorporate a donation and/or charity component. As a cancer survivor, I fully realize the importance of funding foundations and charities and the impact these philanthropic organizations have on the lives of others. Currently, I’m on the boards of the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation (FEHSF), TedX Fulton Street, DRAM Conferences and the Women and Fashion FilmFest. I regularly organize and participate in charity events and am on benefit committees for organizations such as: Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington’s Cancer Research, The Center For Discovery, K.I.D.S/ Fashion Delivers, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, Women Helping Women, to name a few. Causes close to my heart include the following: Cancer, Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy and Alzheimer’s Research, Empowering Women, Education, eradicating Human Trafficking, Homeland Security, Manufacturing in America, Assisting the impoverished and more. What makes you feel most empowered and how do you hope to empower others? I feel the most empowered and energized when I’m helping others to attain their dreams and improve their lives. I believe in the power of positivity and by helping to better the lives of others you are bettering your own, as well as the world. TRUE Model Management is an extension of my commitment to help others make their dreams a reality. At TRUE, we help our models to realize and pursue their dreams related to the industry and otherwise. I regularly participate and partner with organizations that share my desire to empower others, especially women. Some of the organizations include, Women’s Entrepreneur Day, the Women and Fashion Film Fest, Women Helping Women, INC.’s Women’s Summit and Women’s Leadership Live. truemodel.net

CINDY GUYER Restauranteur & Romance Queen By Bennett Marcus

I

f Cindy Guyer looks familiar when you walk into her Upper West Side restaurant/wine bar, Guyer’s, it’s because she has appeared on the covers of over 400 romance novels. A model and actress, she has appeared in numerous national commercials for products like Prell shampoo, plus movies and television shows, in addition to being the queen of romance novel covers. Guyer is sort of the female Fabio, with whom she has shared many book covers. When we spoke to her on a recent Friday afternoon, Guyer was about to head to the restaurant, where she wears many hats. “I do everything,” she says. “I’m very hands-on.” One night she’ll tend bar, another night she’ll do the cooking. “I’m little overworked, but that’s OK,” she laughs. “Right now, I’m on my way over there, my cook will get there around 3 o’clock, and I’ll start to bartend, and at 7 o’clock I’ll turn the bar over to my bartender and then just be the hostess.”

Cindy (left): Purple and Gold Dress and Corset: Maggie Norris (@maggienorris_couture) Dale (right): Blue Dress: Carmen Marc Valvo (IG @carmenmarcvalvo), Shoes: Ruthie Davis (IG @ruthie_davis)

But it turns out that wearing many hats has been the hallmark of this entrepreneur’s varied career, starting at age 15, when the legendary modeling agency founder Wilhelmina scouted her at a Connecticut restaurant where Guyer was lunching with her parents. At 16, Guyer was signed by Eileen Ford, and became the face for the young-adult Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys novels. The agency that cast the books threw a corset on Guyer one day and put her on a romance novel as a “little Lolita,” and she graduated from kid lit to romance novels. “I guess I did such a good job, they just kept using me.” She continued her education, and also studied acting, worked on soap operas, and, she says, just got very lucky early on, and through hard work, wound up having a twenty-year career doing book covers. She still does book shoots. “I did one last month,” Guyer says. November 2016 | 47

She takes care of herself, and realizes that she is very lucky to still look good. Yes, she says, the niche she fell into as romance novel cover-girl is a lot of fun, and she loves the people in the industry. “We have these big romance conventions, and I’m friends with a lot of the authors,” Guyer says. She recently went to a convention in Las Vegas for the magazine The Romantic Times, run by her friend, Kathryn Falk. “I call her my godmother. She’s so good to me. Both of my parents passed away, so her and her husband have always known my family, and they always look after me. She’s just great.” Guyer produced and hosted the series Mr. Romance, a breakout show for Oprah’s Oxygen Network, which featured Fabio and Kiss rocker Gene Simmons. She also wrote the concept and starred in the Lifetime series The Perfect Nanny. So how did Guyer end up in the restaurant business? “I think actors are natural-born entertainers,” she says. “We love people, we like to entertain. We sit around on movie sets waiting, so we’re used to just hanging out with other people, so I think certain actors are just good at hosting. They know how to handle people. I understand people. I love it.” The food she describes as French-American, “but it’s actually very continental, because I do have my grandmother’s fabulous meatballs on the menu.” Weekend brunch skews southern, with grits and homemade biscuits. She loves the kale salad, which she created. “It keeps

me skinny, I call it the model salad.” All of the salads are healthy, she says, and there are fabulous flatbread French pizzas, which are also “not that fattening.” There are daily fish and pasta specials. “It’s very homemade food; homemade, gourmet, fun food.” She hopes Guyer’s will become a neighborhood staple; she has a ten-year lease, and just added weekend brunch and outdoor seating. She hopes to paper the powder room with her book covers. She had previously run a wine bar in the same space, with several partners, a situation she found less than ideal. “This time, I decided I would be the only partner,” she says. “I have no investors, and I’m doing this all on my own.” Partners, Guyer has decided, are only for dancing and for loving. “When it comes to money and different ideas on how to run a company, it gets tricky.” She admits that by doing it on her own, she is overworked, but feels that the rewards will be worth it.

Even with working 7-day weeks, Guyer is still planning new projects; along with Romantic Times editor Falk, she’s cooking up a series of novels set at the restaurant. “With restaurants, there’s always a lot of drama, especially with the staff. And if you’ve ever watched the Bravo show with Lisa Vanderpump, there’s always drama when you’ve got a bunch of kids around. Instead of having a reality television show, we’re going to have books.”

PAULANER NYC Bavaria in The Bowery

A

By Valerie Vitale

Bavarian brewhouse and Restaurant serving German Cuisine paired with freshly made beers and wines, Paulaner New York City is bringing Bavaria to the Bowery. Enjoy a large party across a sleek wooden 16 foot communal table in the center of the room. For an intimate evening, experience the tastes of Bavaria with a contemporary twist in an individual table against the backdrop of walls painted to look like a faded Bavarian flag. Chef Daniel Kill is a native of Bavaria who has served dishes at esteemed restaurants such as Tantris, a Michelin Starred restaurant in Munich. For German dishes that are a step above the rest, he uses locally sourced ingredients and artisanal spices to highlight the unique flavors of the delicious cuisine. If you are stopping by for dinner try the house-made sausages. Spicy lamb sausages come with a crisp red cabbage slaw or the Paulaner is smoked dry aged beef with dark beer, creamy cheddar cheese and potato salad. For dinner enjoy a meal with a presentation that lives up to its taste with the steak on hot stone; tender filet mignon served on a hot lava stone with vegetables sides. Paulaner embraces all seasons with several events. Stop in for Oktoberfest specials like Sauerbraten, tender braised beef shoulder in a red wine and awakening vinegar sauce served with refreshing red cabbage and spätzle. For unforgettable memories with family and friends during the Holidays, dive into the fixed price Holiday Menu. Choose from 4-6 divine courses from 50 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

December 1st through the 25th, served daily from 11 a. m to 10 p.m. Try the crispy Roasted Duck with buttery pretzel dumplings and braised red cabbage. If you are desiring fish, the fresh Slow-Cooked Cod is seeping with flavors and served with black trumpet puree and sunchoke cream (a creamy blend of artichokes.) Choose a dessert that lives up to the rest of the meal with the Warm Chocolate cake, decadent chocolate with sweet glazed bananas and invigorating passion fruit. Explore the flavors of Germany through the in house brewed beer at the custom made bar. Transition from summer to the beginning of autumn with Schwarzbier which translates to “Black Beer.” It has a surprisingly light taste although dark in color. Roasted with extra care, the malt exudes exhilarating notes of espresso and bitter cocoa. For a malt created specifically by a brewmaster for Paulaner New York City, the Munich Pale Ale is a top fermented IPA style beer. Using 3 different hop varieties the brewmaster created an extraordinary brew with a cleansing fruit flavor. Become enchanted by Paulaner’s bright orange and blue exterior and get lost in the extraordinary flavors and colors of this restaurant’s beer and cuisine. 265 Bowery NY, NY 10002 212.780.0300 paulanernyc.com

FIFTY Fifty Shades of Deliciousness

L

By Lisa Loverro

ocated at 50 Commerce Street in Manhattan’s West Village, FIFTY is the newest dining destination that has the neighborhood all abuzz. The restaurant’s owner, 27-year-old Alex Kingman, was attracted to this space not only because he has close ties to the landlord (his family owns the building and he grew up in the apartment above the space) but also because former inhabitants of the space were some of the neighborhood’s favorites: Grange Hall, Blue Mill Tavern and most recently, Commerce. Teaming up with Ecuadorian chef Luis Jaramillo, the new-American cuisine menu uses seasonal ingredients but spices it up a notch with bold flavors from South America. The 91-seat restaurant offers a menu divided into various sections: Snacks, Crudo, Veggies and Plates. The Mini Lobster Rolls and Smoked Trout Deviled Eggs are crowd pleasers as are the Beef Tartare and Flake Crudo. Charred Broccoli and Glazed Roasted Beets grace the veggie section of the menu and for the main attraction; the Grilled Hanger Steak and Mediterranean Octopus can’t be beat.

52 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The cocktail menu, courtesy of Cocktail Ditector Darnell Holguin, offers playful and juicy cocktail elixirs such as the “Shiso Sexy” (Brugal extra dry rum, lime juice, watermelon juice, lemongrass, kaffir lime syrup, Aperol and a shiso leaf), “Market G&T” (botanist gin, green chartreuse, cane syrup, orange bitters, tonic and market herbs) and “Fenix” (Lunazul tequila, aji Amarillo, honey, lime, vanilla tincture and a red bell pepper). All are obviously intended to whet your appetite for more things decadent and indulgent. As for the restaurant’s décor, the owner was careful to preserve existing elements from the ghosts of restaurants past, including the white terrazzo flooring and large leather banquettes. There are large windows, which are great for people watching’ and a wood bar, all which add to the modern and sophisticated look of new restaurant in an iconic New York space. 50 Commerce Street NY, NY 10014 212.524.4104 fiftyrestaurantnyc.com

OIJI Refined Authentic Korean

T

By Sara Barry

he under-the-radar East Village restaurant, Oiji, serves upscale Korean cuisine in eco-chic surroundings. Taking over the former space of Korean spot Dok Suni, Oiji tweaks traditional Korean fare so that it can be served on small plates. Oiji elevates classic Korean cuisine to a higher level, as it is made by not one, but two highly-credentialed chefs. If you are thinking that the East Village doesn’t need another Korean restaurant, Oiji will prove you wrong — time and time again its creative menu has made diners’ mouths water while giving them a small taste of Korea. Oiji’s space is warm and well-ordered, with exposed brick and distressed wood walls. Part of the dining room features a chic table that could have been taken straight out of a reading room. The simple and clean decor, and the earthy atmosphere, featuring dried flowers and herbs and fla-vorful smells coming from the kitchen, complement the space and contribute to its warm ambiance. The restaurant’s menu is small and to the point, with dishes intended to be shared by an entire table, but flavor is definitely not compromised by size. You must try the flavor-packed Buttered Rice, soaked in Warm Butter and topped with a Poached Egg and a few slices of Braised Beef Shank. The homemade Honey Butter Chips, invoking imagery of kettle-cooked chips, are soaked in a fatty, but delicious French Butter and topped with a touch of Honey and Cayenne. This is also Oiji’s only dessert, a dish that is based on a bag of chips that led to a craze in Korea. 54 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Try the Beef Tartare with Ramp Aioli, Cold Buckwheat Noodles, Truffle Seafood Broth with Siz-zling Crispy Rice, or the Handmade Dumplings in White Beef Broth. Vegetarian? Try the Homemade Tofu with Scallion Soy Vinaigrette or the Morel Mushroom Salad with Pine Nuts. Aside from the homemade potato chips, as side dishes, Oiji offers Assorted Kimchi or Lotus Leaf Wrapped Sticky Rice. The restaurant offers a notable cocktail list, but its most well-known libation is the Korean-classic, soju. Oiji makes a deep red-colored soju with pomegranate vinegar and offers drinks like the Namsan Pine, a tannic drink that consists of White Rum, Pine Extract, Honey, Lemon, Egg White and Lavender. Both chefs, Brian Kim and Tae Kyung Ku, grew up in South Korea and met in culinary school in the United States. After departing to master their cooking skills — Mr. Kim at Bouley, and Mr. Ku at Gramercy Tavern and his family’s restaurant back home — they reunited years later and cre-ated Oiji, a haven for creative, refined authentic Korean fare, with hopes of giving America a new perspective on Korean cuisine. 119 1st Avenue New York, NY 10003 646.767.9050 oijinyc.com

H

oliday season is just around the corner, and with it comes a whirlwind of fun filled events that can also be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re the one hosting them! Without the help of a caterer, it can be extremely challenging to manage all of the stress involved with entertaining during the holidays, but with the right approach, it’s actually completely manageable. Here are my tips on how to throw a low stress party this holiday season – or multiple parties, if you’re feeling brave! Start with the basics: knowing what logistics you need to be mindful of is half the battle. Things like guest parking, city/town permits, and even where your guests can put their coats are important to have sorted out in advance to keep your day-of stress low. Go with the flow: understand the flow you want your party to have – do you want your guests to move room to room or stay in a central area of your home? Make sure that your bar and food placement won’t create a bottleneck so guests can move about comfortably in the designated party area(s).

Set the mood: you want your party to feel festive from the moment your guests walk in. Think of the little things you can do ahead of time to create a fun atmosphere. Local party stores have plenty of decorations that will brighten up your home, or you can scour the internet for unique touches. Make sure you have a fun and festive playlist that will keep guests feeling lively – do this in advance and remember that it needs to last multiple hours. Think about elements that will make your guests feel warm and cozy, as well – light a fire in the fireplace and strategically place some candles around your home. You can even create a theme for your party if you want guests to dress up.

dishes that retain their integrity as the night goes on that are also easy to eat, such as foods that sit in sauces, such as meatballs and short ribs. I also love to present party food in “mini meal” format – fill small stemless glasses with delicious food combinations and place forks in them so guests can eat as they mingle. Put the food out before your guests come so you don’t have to spend all your time in the kitchen. If you’re short on time, you can create a few dishes and buy the rest of your food pre-made from your local grocery store – just remember to put them on serving platters to give a homemade appearance. No one is expecting a formal 12-course tasting menu, and your guests will appreciate the effort no matter what.

Stock your bar without overspending: did you know you can buy alcohol on consignment so you can return what you don’t use? Many liquor stores are willing to do so, so it never hurts to ask. In fact, some liquor stores will even deliver it and pick it up with a large enough order. Just buy the essentials (vodka, tequila, scotch, wine, and beer) as well as some mixers and your guests will be happy. If you want to take it a step further, make a fun signature cocktail in advance of your guests’ arrival so you won’t have to worry about playing bartender. Think about holiday flavors with easy-toget ingredients like a spiked apple cider or mulled wine.

Don’t overthink dessert and coffee: guests are no longer drinking as much coffee at the end of the evening as they used to, so make less than you think is necessary. For a festive end-of-the-night drink, think about hot chocolate – spiked or not – to warm guests up before they head back outside into the brisk weather. If you feel up to making dessert, do it in advance – create little parfaits in individual glasses to serve to guests. Or, when guests ask, “What can I bring?” suggest a dessert to eliminate this task from your to-do list.

Avoid complicated food: Want to spend time with your guests at your own party? Then don’t overcomplicate your menu! Plan a simple menu full of bite-sized foods that can sit at room temperature. Mix in a few hot

Follow these tips and you will have a fabulous set up for a festive evening! Remember – there’s no need to be perfect. What really matters is creating an inviting space for your guests to mingle and have fun, so take the stress out of your party planning and just enjoy! November 2016 | 59

ROYAL TREATMENT The Goring, London By Janis Turk

B

efore Kate Middleton married Prince William and became Her Royal Highness, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, first she was a guest at The Goring.

London, and I’d stayed at The Goring in the past, but I hadn’t returned since its recent renovation. (Of course, Duchess Kate came back for the unveiling and celebration of the hotel’s 105th birthday last year).

Standing mere steps from the walls of Buckingham Palace for more than 106-years, The Goring is arguably London’s finest family-owned five-star hotel, the quintessential posh English retreat. So it’s no wonder Ms. Middleton chose to stay in its spacious Royal Apartments night before her Westminster Abbey wedding. Quite literally fit for royalty following its pre wedding $196,000 makeover in 2011, The Goring’s fifth-floor, six-room, $10,950-a-night apartment (“The Royal Suite, where Middleton stayed that night) was designed by Russell Sage, incorporating several subtle tips of his hat to royalty. Elegant silk wallcoverings specially commissioned from the Gainsborough Silk Company in Suffolk, a glass-bottomed drawer holding a love letter of HM Queen Victoria, a wardrobe with a Queen’s Guard’s uniform secreted inside, and even a portrait of Queen Victoria behind glass in the shower are but some of the suite’s subtle nods to sovereigns. The Goring’s other 60+ rooms and suites are equally regal. If The Goring were fit for a royal wedding weekend, then my husband and I thought it would surely do for our 21st wedding anniversary. I’m often in

I was dressed appropriately for a fashionable London hotel, but when I saw the elegant attire of the young ladies at reception, each wearing a little black dress, a smart ivory dress coat and single strand of pearls, I felt like an altogether unfashionable American. However, when owner Jeremy Goring greeted us with his uproarious laugh and wicked sense of humor, we immediately felt at ease. One can be posh, prim and proper and still make guests feel at home: Both Mr. Goring and his hotel share that gift. Since completing its multi-million-dollar renovation in 2015, the walls of Front Hall and the ground floor have been draped in hand-painted wallcoverings by Fromental. The wallpaper depicts English parkland dotted with exotic animals, which designer Russell Sage thus describes: “Imagine if all the animals in London Zoo had escaped into Hyde Park…” Just off the Front Room, is The Goring’s inviting Bar & Lounge, designed by Tim Gosling, a gentleman’s club-like living room where guests can enjoy a light lunch, afternoon tea or a nightcap by the fireplace. Adjacent is a sunny garden terrace overlooking Goring Gardens, one of the largest private gardens in central London.

74 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

After enjoying a drink and chef’s house-made cheese straws in the lounge, we were escorted to one of the hotel’s four spacious Belgravia Suites. Impeccably English in style, these opulent one-bedroom suites were also designed by Mr. Sage and feature six historic silks rewoven from the fashionable Gainsborough Silk Company. Each has an elegant sitting room with a handsome marble fireplace and large windows with views of Beeston Place. The well-proportioned bespoke bedrooms with fine linens are styled with hand-made furniture in birds-eye maple, mahogany and walnut. The spacious marble bathrooms have walk-in showers, and ours even had a television secreted in a mirror by the tub. Guests at each suite are not only assigned their own footman, but they are also offered in-room cocktail service each evening. During our stay, we would return from sight-seeing to find our clothes cleaned and pressed, our bath drawn and a silver tray with a crystal decanter and two glasses along with printed instructions on how to mix a special English cocktail. On the evening of our 21st anniversary, The Goring staff left a crystal vase of fresh flowers and a box of Prestat chocolates and truffles (also a favorite of The Queen) in our room. After dressing for dinner, we retired to the lounge by the fireplace for an aperitif before heading to the Goring Dining Room, designed by another Royal: Princess Margaret’s son, David Linley, nephew of The Queen, a Viscount, designer and furniture maker. Linley has a noble touch when it comes to design, but his modern-take on old-school elegance is evidenced in soft, soothing colors, thick lush draperies and bold architectural elements, like walnut Greek columns flanking a white marble hearth. A creamy coved ceiling and frosting-white millwork pay homage to the room’s good Georgian bones. Two whimsical,

Swarovski chandeliers, each with a branch-like shape, hang dotted with lilac blue lights. The Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once said they looked like Christmas decorations. But of course, the real star of the restaurant is The Goring’s executive chef, Shay Cooper, whose creative take on classic continental cuisine has recently earned a coveted Michelin Star. I enjoyed a first course of Dorset crab, leek and potato salad, rye bread, and sauce béarnaise, and later we were delighted by our shared course of Beef Wellington, carved tableside. Delightful desserts included Manjari chocolate, milk jam, salt caramel mousse, milk ice cream with Cornish clotted cream mousse, and an apple sorbet with caramelized hazelnuts. Over the past century, members of the Royal Family have visited The Goring, and the Queen Mother’s favorite dish, “oeufs Drumkilbo” remains on the menu. In 1948, Prince Charles' christening cake was created by the Goring’s pastry chef, so it’s no surprise that the Queen has awarded The Goring with a Royal Warrant, a discriminating mark of royal recognition. More than 106 years after opening its doors, The Goring remains aristocratic, yet modern, warm and welcoming. Named one of the top 100 of the World’s Best Hotels by Travel + Leisure in 2015, it was the perfect London lodging for our anniversary trip. For there in the shadow of Buckingham palace, we were treated like royalty, and I slept like a princess.

Bedroom at the Hamilton Penthouse

HAMILTON PENTHOUSE AT THE CORINTHIA LONDON Shines Bright Like a Diamond

By Victoria R. Crosby | Photos by Victoria Crosby and Courtesy of Corinthia London

T

he Corinthia Hotel in London has several duplex penthouse suites, and I was fortunate enough to stay in one of them recently. The Hamilton Suite, named for Lady Emma Hamilton, has a view over London’s rooftops with the statue of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, known as Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, looking in the direction of his true love, Lady Hamilton, and the River Thames. The suites are a favorite of many stars of films and the music world, and staying there certainly made me feel like I was a Hollywood star, but I am sworn to secrecy as to their identities. From the rooftop terrace you can also see the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and the big wheel known as the London Eye. There was a full moon during my stay and it was delightful to watch the glittering lights of the surrounding buildings from the soothing bubbles of the hot tub on the deck. There is also a fireplace and two heaters on the terrace, but the weather was quite warm for early September and extra heat wasn’t needed. 76 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

When you first enter the penthouse it is like stepping into the center of a diamond. The walls are all mirrors and glass, with a chandelier in the entry hall that resembles the branches of a tree in winter covered in sparkling ice. The rooms, living room, dining room, two bathrooms, a small kitchen and a large bedroom are elegantly decorated in white and beige, with touches of soft pink, and everything is controlled by the touch of a button; like magic the drapes open and close, the temperature control, the gas fireplaces and the televisions. A glamorous winding, white marble staircase, which is lit under each step leads to the second floor bedroom, bathroom and terrace. The television in the bedroom is hidden in a console at the foot of the bed, and can move up and down from the controls on a tablet on the night table. Everything is the epitome of luxury.

TOP LEFT: Massimo Restaurant Corinthia London, BOTTOM LEFT: Terrace at the Hamilton Penthouse, RIGHT: Marble staircase at the Hamilton Penthouse.

Soaking in the huge freestanding stone bathtub in the Carbuzzu marble bathroom, was a relaxing and luxurious way to melt away the jet lag from the flight from New York. The bath salts and all bathroom products are by ESPALife. The ESPALife flagship is actually located in the Corinthia London, and their fabulous products are used at all the Corinthia Hotels. The spacious suite has over 2,000 square feet and was perfect for entertaining my family who still live in England. My niece, a classical musician who lives in London, and was so impressed with my fabulous surroundings. Afternoon tea, served on fine English China in the Lobby Lounge with its humongous chandelier by Baccarat hanging overhead, and artistic floral arrangement around the room, or in the peaceful Garden Lounge, tea in the afternoon is a British institution.

Dinner at Massimo, an Italian restaurant, one of the fine restaurants at the Corinthia, was also a delightful experience. We were a small group for dinner and the Head Chef Andrea Cirino came to our table to check on our meal and to discuss various aspects of the menu. My starter was a delicious carpaccio of beef with black truffle, followed by duck breast with balsamic broccoli and apricots and then a dessert called Five Senses of Chocolate, which was a perfect ending to an amazing dinner. Of course we shared a bottle of red wine recommended by Adriana Valentini the Head Sommelier. This was my second time staying at Corinthia London, and the service and amenities are second to none. There are six other penthouse suites at the Corinthia London, although I haven’t seen them, I can’t imagine a more enchanting place to stay and be treated like royalty, than the one that “shines bright like a diamond”. corinthia.com/en/hotels/london

TAKE ON TELLURIDE Interactive Paradise

O

By Valerie Vitale

n my first trip out to Telluride, I thought I knew what to expect. Another ski resort, I figured, should be enjoyable. But as I sat there on the plane silencing the demands of a busy city life, my ears filled with the buzz that surrounded me. This wasn’t your normal, so long LaGuardia I’m off to chase the sun, kind of buzz; this was something completely different…something contagious… and I couldn’t help but catch it.

This became quite clear at my first stop – Wagner Custom Skis. With over 300,000 lines of code in their DNA software, the Wagner Custom design team takes great pride in creating custom skis that are perfectly matched to your individual needs. A more personalized gift simply does not exist. Don’t take it from me, take it from the team that lives and breathes the mountain lifestyle so deeply they have built their work schedules around optimal ski time.

From the mouths of those privy to Colorado’s best kept secret, “You’ll never leave Telluride without planning your next trip back.” The natural beauty of this box canyon coupled with its Butch Cassidy old-town historic charm, sets the stage for any ski enthusiast's dream destination. But there’s more to Telluride than just prime location. There’s an energy, a way of life, that draws you in and never lets you go.

In a town where happiness is measured by the number of runs you’ve hit in a day, it’s safe to say Telluride exudes a culture for skiing. Offering a wide variety of terrain, you can plan a perfect day on the slopes, unbothered by lines or crowds, for all ability levels. Or if it’s a thrill you’re seeking, drop the kids off at ski school and spend your afternoon heli-skiing over 10,000 vertical feet of untouched terrain. Those willing to part from their skis can experience

the mountains from a whole new perspective while exploring backcountry on an exhilarating snowmobile tour led by Telluride Outfitters, soaring above the town in a glider plane, or riding across the valley floor on a fat tire bike. A little incentive never hurt, so why not end your Boot Doctor fat tire biking tour with well-deserved, locally produced refreshments from both the Telluride Distilling and Telluride Brewing Companies…believe me, they’re worth the ride. When you’ve had enough fun for the day, your luxurious accommodations await at Element 52. Ranging from two to five bedrooms, these Auberge Residences sit mountainside allowing for direct ski-in/ski-out access. Enjoy the convenience of an on-site ski concierge, storage, tuning, and private clubroom for après ski. Relax in your private steam shower, soak in the heated outdoor pools, or simply cozy up to your gas fireplace and unwind. And forget about a rental car, that won’t be necessary. The only transportation you’ll need is the free gondola connecting Telluride with its modern counterpart, Mountain Village. Boasting breathtaking mountain vistas, unbeatable sunsets, and access to the Telluride Golf Club, come up and behold the grandeur of the artfully refined Mountain Village. Whether for rejuvenating hand and foot therapy, warm oil treatment, or a couples’ aromatherapy message, the Madeline Hotel Spa and Salon offers high-alpine tranquility like no other. With a

THE CHORD CLUB New York's Hottest Recording Studio

I

By Cat Andersen

t started out as a pop up. Now, it’s a full blown state-of-the-art 5700 square foot recording studio with the likes of Wyclef Jean and American Authors walking through its doors. To say that The Chord Club has come a long way in the last 18 months would be an understatement.

So while artists like Brandy and Joss Stone are loving The Chord Club for being incognito and open 24/7, there are toddlers who are loving its interactive class called “Little Rockers” and the live three-piece band that comes with it.

“I would have never ever ever thought I’d be in the position that I’m in now,” says the studio’s owner, Theresa Scotto. Prior to it’s opening, Scotto had spent 25 years selling life insurance. “Who was I to build a recording studio?”

“We play current music so we’re not playing The Farmer in the Dell or the music that I grew up with taking my kids to these classes. We’re playing the Katy Perry and the Taylor Swift songs that you’re hearing on the radio now.”

The idea came to her about three years ago when her daughter, Gabriella, who was 14 at the time, came to her and said she wanted to sing. In support of her daughter’s dream, Scotto arranged a session for her at a recording studio. It was then that Scotto had her aha moment: “I had an idea of doing children’s parties in a recording studio and from that this whole notion came about of giving children and adults a place to come and take lessons.”

The Chord Club also hosts band rehearsals and private lessons for all ages in everything from keyboard and drums to guitar and vocals.

90 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Scotto says one of the things that sets them apart from other places that offer music instruction is that The Chord Club is an actual recording studio, so they’re able to record their students and let them hear how they sound compared to their last lesson.

“It’s really quite cool to see them listening to themselves as the weeks go on lesson after lesson. They get a feel as to how they’re progressing and to be able to see it and hear it, it’s pretty special.” And not a square foot of space is going unused. The Chord Club also has a party room for corporate team building events, luncheons, and birthday parties for both adults and children. If you’re the birthday boy or girl (or guy or gal), you get the full rockstar treatment—a chance to sing a solo in the recording studio on professional mikes with an engineer in the booth giving you feedback. “I made sure the décor wasn’t a child facility just because we do children’s classes but also a place where adults would want to have a party,” said Scotto. Within the next year, she’s hoping to expand the business and open more locations. Looking back, Scotto says it’s hard to believe how it all began. She says the tipping point was a conversation with Charlie

Walk, the head of Republic Records, who booked his child’s birthday party at Scotto’s pop-up location in midtown. Walk suggested that Scotto open up her own studio. Her reply: “Are you crazy? I’ve been selling insurance for 25 years!” Walk countered with his own question: “What do you see this place as?” Scotto continues the story: “And I said, ‘you know, I get calls all the time for lessons and parties…’ and Walk interrupted her, saying simply: “So do it. You need to do this. You know you could do this right.” Scotto reflects on how much has changed since that conversation. “It’s just a whole new chapter. To watch my kid grow like this and to be able to offer the community a facility where they’re getting top notch instructors and top notch equipment has been pretty amazing.”

MICHAEL BEDNAR Fights for a Cause

M

By W.A. Muller

ichael Bednar grew up in Binghamton, New York. After high school, he started in the hospitality industry. Michael worked his way up the ladder and learned everything he could about the restaurant business, eventually moving into the club business becoming a bartender as well as a doorman bouncer for several years. He eventually became beverage director, overseeing five restaurants, as well as, the catering department at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach. Michael went onto become director of food and beverage for country clubs all over the country Eventually, Michael found his way back to New York and Long Island, where he worked at the newly-opened Serata Oyster Bay, becoming managing partner in September of 2015. His sister suffered a stroke in late October of the same year and he returned to Virginia Beach to take care of his sister

92 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

for a year. Upon returning to Long Island, Michael started a new venture called Catering by Michael. Catering to some of his clients from Serato Michael focused his business on small parties at the homes of his clients Michael has been a member at ilovekickboxing Oyster Bay for 5 years. Bobby Ray, the owner, and his wife started five years ago and Michael has been with them ever since February of this year. One of the instructors had mentioned that there was a charity event to box, as Michael had never boxed before and something he always wanted to do when he was a child. His dream will become a reality on November 21, with Long Island Fight for Charity. This amazing organization \will be celebrating its 13th year for this event and Michael has had the pleasure and honor of having Village Cigarro, former Marine boxing champion and professional fighter, training him, as well as, Joanne Hutchins.

Michael has tremendous respect for boxers. Boxing is an art and boxers are probably the most conditioned athletes in the world. When boxing you need to control your emotions you cannot get upset when you're getting hit. Long Island Fight for Charity donates its proceeds to Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School and the National Foundation for Human Potentia. Michael has not set a limit on how much money he will be able to raise, $5000 is the minimum. He was also fortunate for the Crescent Club to hold an event for him, where he raised money for the event. On another note, 22kill was started by an American Army veteran who decided doing 22 push-ups a day to 22 million to bring awareness and support for our veterans. On average based on a 2012 study 22 veterans commit suicide daily number that is way too high one is too much. Michel started doing his pushups on June 20 and after his 22 days he decided not to quit and to continue to the 22 million or over. His thought process was when the challenge is over that does not mean that the 22 veterans

on average daily are not going to stop him to stop committing suicide. He has also decided that be would start doing 22 jumping jacks a day until 22 million have been reaches. And when jumping jacks are finished, he intends to continue to do 22 millions squats or 22 million curls or 22 million lunches. He believes this is going to become a lifestyle change for him, so he decided to create a new foundation called Lifestyle 22 Fit. Hid intention is to go to historical landmarks in New York City like the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Times Square and get people to do 22 jumping jacks with him. This will help to continue the awareness of veterans' needs. Micheal believes in giving back and doing the right thing. There was a time in his life, when he was down on his luck and people helped him through it, so he believes that paying it forward and going forward to start this foundation/project for the veterans is it the right thing to do. BRAD GERSTMAN The Fixer

A

By Bennett Marcus

ttorney Brad Gerstman is known in political circles as a “fixer,” and the first thing that people ask him is how his work compares to that of Olivia Pope, of ABC’s hit series “Scandal,” and Showtime's “Ray Donovan,” both fictional “fixers.” Some of what Gerstman does is analogous to what you see those TV characters do, but a lot of it is very different. “We do things which are entirely legal and, that crosses out 75 percent of what Ray Donovan does,” Gerstman says. However, Gerstman is hired to deal with some of the same types of cases in real life, and points out that most of what that character does can be done legally. His approach is to use Donovan-like “creative” methods to solve a problem - but legally. In his two practices, Gotham Government Relationships and Communications and Gerstman, Schwartz and Malito, Gerstman also does a lot of the things that Olivia Pope does. “I mean, again, within the world of where it’s legal; we’re not hacking people, you know.” What Gerstman does is lobby politicians and government agencies for his clients, but again, his practice is different because unlike the shadowy figures we read about, his work is completely out in the open. “When people think of lobbyists they think behind-the-scenes kind of people, you don’t know their names, you don’t know who they are, but they’re the ones moving government,” he explains. “We do it very differently. We’re up in front. I put my name out there, put my face out there, and lead the way as a public figure in these battles, small or large.” Gerstman appears regularly on Fox News, and speaks with multiple newspapers on a daily basis to publicize his causes. The battles he wages vary in scope, but they do not all involve lobbying on behalf of the rich and influential, or big business. Some of his clients are schools, including special-needs schools, for instance. “Sometimes we have to deal with the people on the committees, like the Legislative Committee, to try to get assistance for the schools.” It may be about funding, or changing locations, or issues of expanding their programs. He also works directly 94 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

with several organizations dealing with autism, and was one of the leaders in getting the autism insurance bill passed in New York City. Another passion of his is working against Uber on behalf of yellow cab medallion drivers. He is especially outspoken about Uber’s record with the disabled. “Uber has 35 thousand cars on city streets and not one of them is accessible by a wheelchair,” Gerstman says. “Disability is important to me as a charitable portion of my life, it’s something I get very passionate about.”He got his start in the Bronx D.A.’s office, and even as a young lawyer, he realized that many of the problems he dealt with did not necessarily require the legal system to resolve, but rather a phone call to the right person. “The DA would ask that constituents be serviced, and when I was called upon to do it I found it to be a very empowering and powerful situation where I’d be able to make some calls for a constituent and resolve matters for them easily without putting on my law hat,” he says. He then became a defense attorney, and again found that he was moving away from a traditional law practice and more toward problem solving for his clients. “I was saying you know what, I don’t need the courts to do it, I could do this politically.” “To this day, people come in and say I want to sue this one, I want to sue that one, I want to sue this public authority, I want to sue, sue, sue,” Gerstman says. “And I say, ‘Well, we can do that, we have a law firm that handles plenty of lawsuits, but let me make some other suggestions first.’ To me, it’s a more effective and more cost effective way of dealing with a number of these issues. I enjoy it. Again, it’s more like a fixer kind of thing, where they have a problem that needs to be solved. “He realizes that lawsuits cannot always be avoided. “I’m not saying that you never have to sue, our firms can and will do it, but there are times when you can do this more efficiently without the lawsuit.”

SEVEN13 FILMS Focus on Community Outreach

J

By W.A. Muller

oseph A. Halsey and Lee Kolinsky launch their new film production company seven13 films and web site seven13films.nyc. The focus of seven13 is to create films that provide positive messages that ignite discussion on social issues. The website seven13films.nyc launched in August. Their debut project titled Black Like Me takes place in a grand jury hearing where two police officers are being accused of shooting a 16 year-old autistic boy. The brother, who was on the scene must now testify about the fateful day and the jury has to decide whether there is enough evidence to go to trial. Black Like Me is a film that explores autism and law enforcement training. “This project is important on several levels,” said Lee Kolinsky, co-owner of seven13. “It recognizes the challenges of those who have a child with autism, it recognizes the daily perception of police on patrol in distressed neighborhoods and it recognizes the need for community involvement.” seven13 films will develop productions that actively request the involvement of the local boys and girls clubs in the filmmaking process. The company also plans to bring in local businesses and law enforcement agencies to help support an environment that strengthens bonds for a positive future. "The idea is to inspire young people who seek out the art of filmmaking by exposing them to the process right in their own back yard,” said Joseph A. Halsey, co-owner of seven13. “We are hoping to bring the filming process into areas where film companies typically don’t film in.” To help the progress of community development and outreach programs, seven13 films is seeking sponsorships to help with the film’s production. Partial proceeds will be donated to autism awareness and local law enforcement training on how to identify an Emotionally Disturbed Person

(EDP). Additionally, seven13 will be donating items such as athletic equipment and clothing from companies who use their product placement program. Sponsorship and product placement opportunities are available on the seven13films.nyc web site. “We like to make films that have substance and provide thought-provoking conversations,” said Kolinsky. “Through sponsorships and product placement, we can creatively express social issues, provide opportunities in film and donate products to those who can use them.” Halsey and Kolinsky have many years of experience in film and television. Halsey’s credits include The Cosby Show, Law & Order SVU, Guiding Light and One Life to Live. He has also received notoriety for his award winning role in the short film Junkie Heaven. Joseph stepped into directing with the debut of his short film Choice “Mother,” which touches on the controversial subject of Death with Dignity. The film is part of a series that touches on different aspects of the subject. Kolinsky is an award-winning screenwriter whose career includes developing the story for the independent feature film Send No Flowers. He has provided content for Doubleday Entertainment, Columbia House DVD, BMG, PR Newswire, yourmusic.com. Seven13 films is dedicated to providing social messages that spark conversation through the art of filmmaking. With several years of experience in television and film, seven13 films offers comprehensive media strategies designed to drive education, awareness, community outreach and engagement on important public issues. Seven13 films covers topics with relevance because our community matters. seven13films.nyc

MESSINA MARKET Brings Quality Food to NY

W

By W.A. Muller

hen an Italian family invites you to dinner, what do you usually do? I mean after you breathlessly accept in excited anticipation. You have a light breakfast that day and skip lunch because your stomach is going to need the space. Because there’s a powerful mother figure scooping yet another helping onto your plate, refusing your refusal, commanding you to keep eating: “Mangia, Mangia, Mangia!” That’s the picture I painted for Daniele Messina, President of the Messina Group, a family-owned company that runs four restaurants in New York and a catering business. I expected him to take the bait and run with it, in his description of what his Messina Market eateries offer. Instead, he threw my picture right out the window. In other words, he was frank, which was refreshing. “The Italian culture from Italy is actually a very different way of eating. It’s actually smaller portions, a lot of fresh food. It’s a lot of vegetables, a lot of pasta and not actually too much meat. There’s a lot of fresh food in Italy so that’s why most people are not overweight and why they have the second highest longevity in the world.” It’s clear that Messina Market embodies all of that. All the food is fresh and your order is cooked right in front of you. Messina says it’s the reason his customers keep coming back. They rave about the different stations where you can get everything custom made, from omelets and fajitas to crepes and smoothies. All of it whipped up right on the spot. “People feel more comfortable when they’re watching people make their food, fresh in front of their eyes. It gives them a sense of security,” Messina notes.

98 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

But is it as good as Grandma’s home-cooking? Once again, Messina wastes no time setting me straight by telling me about a conversation he recently had with an acquaintance: “Somebody asked me one time, ‘why is it that my grandma can make something so good?’ I said, ‘She’s not really as good of a chef as you think that she is.’ He said, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘All it is, is that she uses quality ingredients and makes it fresh. That’s really why it tastes so good. That’s pretty much the premise of everything.” Did I mention Messina was frank? The guy is challenging Grandma. The thing is, he’s able to get away with it, because the food at Messina Market is that good. He points out that Grandma’s secret ingredient (Hint: the L word) is the same one he uses too..: “You have to really have a love for food, and on top of that you have to have an understanding because it’s a very delicate subject in the sense that people are ingesting what you’re making.” At this point, I’m starting to understand where his frankness comes from. Mixing words leaves room for error and that’s not an option in his line of work. Messina put it this way, “I have friends that have construction companies that at the end of the day, if something like the paint was incorrect, they can always go back and correct it the next day. We can’t do that in our business. You can’t tell somebody, ‘oh, have your party again.’" So frank. So refreshing. It’s clear Messina Market is an extension of Messina himself. It’s about being real-Real food, real people. And taking the time to appreciate both. messinamarket.com

NEW YORK ART, ANTIQUE & JEWELRY SHOW The Best of the Best

cott Diament, CEO of the Palm Beach Show Group, presented Lauren Bush Lauren with a check for $10,000 that will allow the Feed Foundation to give 90,000 meals to those in need. Sharon Bush hosted a private reception that saluted her daughter Lauren Bush Lauren and the FEED Foundation at the opening night of the New York Art, Antique and Jewelry Show. feedprojects.com The New York Art, Antique & Jewelry Show is put on by the Palm Beach Show Group and Scott Diament. “Pier 94 allows us to plan, design and deliver a much bigger, world-class event in Manhattan,” explained Diament. “We have amassed one of the best dealer participation lists of any show anywhere. For us, it’s very exciting to steward the progression of the show, which continues to grow each year. Now that we are at Pier 94, we were able to expand our offerings and showcase these amazing offerings in one of the greatest collecting areas on the planet Earth – New York.” Palm Beach Show Group is one of the world’s preeminent production companies with eleven important annual shows including Baltimore, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, New York, and the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antique Show that opens at the Palm Beach Convention Center from February 15th – 21st.

Diament, a certified gemologist with a string of jewelry stores, founded the Palm Beach Show Group after exhibiting at shows in Europe and noting the contrast with those in the United States. When Diament heard that there were plans to build the Palm Beach Convention Center, he and his partners decided to secure Presidents’ Day Weekend and bring in a European style fair. The inaugural show took place in 2004 with 230 dealers from around the world. At the same time, it became the largest art, antique and jewelry show in U.S. history, and remains so today. palmbeachshowgroup.com. Bill Rau, a third generation antiques dealer and owner of M.S Rau Antiques in New Orleans, showcased a rare first edition Wedgewood Portland Vase for $50,000, a 10.06 carat ring named The Royal Blue priced at $9.6 million. “I have theory that I believe to be true that are the rules for all collectibles,” explained Rau, “if you love 19th Century paintings and are an expert in that and you want to learn about Old Master paintings, I think what you have to learn is only about 15%, because 85% of those rules are the same,” Rau became knowledgeable in so many niche collectibles categories. “If you’re an expert in painting, and you want to learn about jewelry, that might be the biggest difference, that might be 30% different rules, but the majority of the rules are going to be the same,” he says. Those general rules: is the piece in good condition, is it rare, is it unique, does it come with papers, does the origin matter, is it signed? Those rules are going to be the same whether you’re talking about jewelry or paintings, and then, obviously, you have to learn the 30% different rules,” Rau says. “I was blessed, obviously, because I grew up in the business, so I learned a number of things very early.” rauantiques.com. Up next, the Palm Beach Convention Center will host the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show from February 15th to the 21s

BECOME A GAZELLE A Unique Adventure for the Modern and Courageous Woman By Elizabeth Darwen

Y

ear after year, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc has been a pioneer, never ceasing to grow, constantly developing and evolving with the times, always faithful to its founding values: courage, the desire to push one’s limits, loyalty, solidarity and social commitment. 2017 marks the 27th annual event, which takes place between March 17 and April 1, 2017 in the unspoiled beauty of the Moroccan desert. The Rallye respects its scenic host country and its people through the actions of the Rallye’s non-profit, Cœur de Gazelles, as well as the environment: the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is the only motor Rallye in the world with ISO 14001 certification. The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is a human adventure that is one of a kind. It is the only international off-road Rallye race for women only. Since 1990, it has been bringing together women between the ages of 18 and 71, from more than 15 different countries, who embark on an adventure of a lifetime 102 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

from the French city of Nice on March 18th, 2017 and onward to the start of the Rallye in the Moroccan desert. The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is developing a new vision of automobile competition: no speed and no GPS, just old-fashioned navigation, completely off-road. All Rallye participants, known as “Gazelles”, leave this adventure marked forever by the experience: they push their limits, have to face themselves, far from their sometimes difficult daily lives as women; there is also a strong element of sharing and mutual aid with their teammate as well as with the other “Gazelles”. But while the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is a return to the roots of adventure, it is also, with its satellite system for tracking the teams, on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to safety. This duality is the strength of this unusual competition. With its unique concept, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc is changing the way people view automobile use.

About Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc is the only women-only off-road Rallye in the world. Created in 1990, this unique event brings women between the ages of 18 and 71 from more than 15 different countries together in the Moroccan desert. Since its inception, the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles has been creating a new vision of automobile competition: no speed and no GPS, just old fashioned navigation, completely off-road: a return to the roots of Adventure. The only requirement is determination. The women who take part in this Rallye—known as Gazelles—are of all ages, social backgrounds, nationalities and levels of off-road experience. Whether in a 4x4, Crossover, Quad, truck or motorbike, they all come to take part in a unique competition: whose competitors share the values of tolerance, solidarity and determination, that respects the host country and its people through the actions of the Rallye’s non-profit, Cœur de Gazelles, and that cares about the environment: the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is the only motor Rallye in the world with ISO 14001 certification. While the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles marks a return to the roots of adventure, it is also on the cutting edge of technology, with a satellite tracking system for optimal safety. A new vision for the world of motor sports! We have been putting forward a new vision of motor sport for years, with the development of an event where the pleasure lies in driving without excessive speed, and where the goal of driving the shortest possible distance is in line with our environmental commitment.

About Cœur de Gazelles Coeur de Gazelles is a group of highly motivated volunteers working daily to provide people with the help they need. A registered non-profit organization since 2001, Coeur de Gazelles is committed to providing sustainable aid through concrete actions. Our cross-border efforts must remain strong to allow us to uphold our values and continue to help those who are the most in need. Coeur de Gazelles works on projects that meet the needs of Morocco’s remote populations: medical care, education, the environment and sustainable development, job training for women, improving living conditions and a desire to spread joy by distributing donations. Our actions are established on a "human scale": we work with the local population to address the source of the problem. We work with and for the most disadvantaged: our actions enable people to become agents of their own development. We work in a spirit of partnership: we do not create alternative structures; we strengthen and develop existing local ones. We work with low operating costs: all donations are used for the direct benefit of the population. Our actions are recognized by the Moroccan government: we work on legitimate projects in collaboration with local authorities. coeurdegazelles.org

Jackie's Joke Box Follow Jackie on Twitter for a daily joke! @JackieMartling A drunk stumbles into a confessional. The priest hears him come in but then he doesn't hear anything, so the priest bangs on the wall. The drunk says, "F-forget it, buddy. Th-there's no paper in this one, either." A cannibal and his son are walking in the jungle when a beautiful girl goes running in front of them. The son says, "Pop, let's take her home and eat her." His father says, "Like hell ‌ let's take her home and eat your mother." Friedman's mother's lonely, so he tells the local pet store owner he wants to get his mother the best talking bird they can find. The owner imports a South American macaw that can speak seven languages and ships it to Friedman's mother. A few days later, Friedman calls his mother and says, "Mom, did you get a delivery from me?" She says, "Yes, thank you so much, it was delicious." Friedman says, "Ma! You ate it? Ma, that bird could speak seven languages." She says, "So why didn't he speak up?" Haggerty into the bedroom and hands his wife two aspirin and a glass of water. She says, "What's this all about?" He says, "They’re for your headache." She says, "I don't have a headache." He says, "Good. Get that nightie off."
