Tracy Stern New York’s Trendsetter
T
By Blake Vincent | Photos by Kristiina Wilson
racy Stern is one of New York’s most multifaceted and eclectic socialites. She isn’t here to just sit and look pretty for the camera in her Jerry Hall-inspired outfit, she means business. In fact, she has about six businesses: two tea collections called SalonTea and T&Co; a travel guide called GypChic; a skateboard deck designing studio; an interior design company; owner of beautiful real estate; and a closet on VillageLuxe. She is all about style, yet has an uncanny ability to infuse that passion into all of her projects. One could say she is a modern Renaissance woman when referring to her extremely eclectic taste in fashion and décor. As an entrepreneur, one must have their fingers in myriad pies at any given time and that’s exactly what Tracy has chosen to do. A broadbased personal style has lead to a rather interesting amalgamation of
lifestyle brands under her name. An associate’s degree from the New York School of Design has served her well and certainly allowed her talents to bloom. Not only is she an artist herself, but she has a fantastic collection of killer artist’s work such as John Giorno, Tracey Emin, Peter Max, Salvador Dali and Keith Haring. Tracy’s premier tea collection SalonTea, which once earned a spot in Oprah’s “Favorite Things,” shows her flair for the art of design in a way that is unstoppable. Who knew tea could be an accent to one’s personal style? Tracy certainly did. Blends like The Dancer, a mixture of honeybush and rooibos tea with flavorful fruit accents and floral notes, contrasts delightfully with stronger brews like The Fashionable Dandy, her house earl grey. If you can trust anyone to blend your teas with an artist’s palette, Tracy is your woman. September 2016 | 45

From her origins in Miami, Florida, she has always been obsessed with the rituals behind tea, especially those of the European aristocracy in the 18th century. She displayed that to a fashionable extreme when she had the crew of Bravo’s Mad Fashion make her a Marie Antoinetteinspired dress to become a living advertisement for SalonTea. To this day she continues organizing and creating beautiful themed tea parties. For those who are inclined to do so themselves, Tracy has written two incredible DIY books: Tea Party and Tea For You. Out of all the endeavors she’s immersed herself in, her love for tea seems to have had a lasting impression. It’s taken her all around the world, even to Dubai to open a SalonTea location at the prestigious Dubai Mall. The Royal Family of the United Arab Emirates shared in experiencing Tracy’s tea blends with her in the great city of Abu Dhabi where she was a guest of honor. She insists that tea is what brings people together, and this sharing and mutual trust are integral ingredients to good business and strong friendships. Royal rendezvous in the Middle East don’t stop there for Tracy Stern. In the space of a month she was also able to design and decorate a Plaza residence for a prince. She’s been flown to Monaco, France to host a VIP afternoon tea at the Hotel de Paris for the Grand Prix Monte Carlo. Along with canapés created by Alain Ducasse, SalonTea was featured in Taste of Monte Carlo magazine. People all around the world recognize Tracy’s brilliance when it comes to blending and brewing teas. But Tracy wasn’t going to just stop at tea; something she professes is her first and foremost passion since she was a child. I think she realized that she has a lot more to give. After all, her lifestyle is all encompassing. From the books she reads, to the meals she cooks, to the businesses she maintains, and the outfits she pulls together, she is a force of “artful living” on the Upper East Side. Even GypChic is geared toward a certain wanderluxe demographic, one that appreciates mid-century design with a hint of new and old bohemian flair. Let her guide you through Greenpoint, Brooklyn or Joshua Tree, California and you’re bound to be delighted by the shops, restaurants and attractions she has handpicked for an experience that is pure Tracy. If you follow her lead, vintage furniture, boho boutiques, juice bars, restaurants and cafés are all waiting for you. Every stop reflects Tracy’s unwavering dedication to her particular lifestyle: chic and free-spirited, something embodied in the name of the guide herself. And if walking around and shopping in Tracy’s favorite haunts is not enough for you, you could literally take a walk in her shoes via her closet on VillageLuxe. Gain access to her extravagant style-from Gucci dresses to vintage jewelry, not to mention her more hippy-chic pieces. When asked by VillageLuxe’s Ashleigh Puyol what she liked about the closets available in New York, she answered: “The variety. Visit an uptown or downtown closet and you will see completely different choices. As an eclectic person, I like to pick and choose. I don’t have one style. My fashion choices are usually based on books that I’ve read, movies I’ve watched, or places I’ve traveled. My closet is a soundtrack of my traveling lifestyle and that translates to my fashion.” September 2016 | 47

And it truly does, even to her décor. A few years ago if you had walked into her apartment you’d find golden mock-crocodile lining her furniture with vintage French design everywhere. This new yet old-world feel meshed with a 1920’s diva setting. Now, she’s gone full 1970’s skater babe with neon lights, psychedelic patterns and fuzzy fabrics. Any fashion-forward flower child would feel right at home. Her color palettes are vibrant oranges, greens, reds and pinks contrasted with classic accents of black and white here and there. Reflecting this eclectic style, as quoted in “Sibylle’s Style Diary” for the Epoch Times, she is known as a “double agent in style.” She mixes haute couture with a bohemian style that would make any Coachella-goer fall to their knees. Her skills in interior design, party planning and personal style excel beyond expectation. Aside from her professional life and many achievements within the world of lifestyle branding, art and décor, she is also a kind and caring person. With the status she has worked so hard to attain, she has a lot to give 50 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
back as well. She’s chaired for the American Heart Association, as well as supported causes such as New Yorkers for Children and even started a charity of her own called Cuffs for a Cause. Always one to give back to the arts, she also contributed to Save Venice Inc, a group that preserves Venetian art and culture. By the end of the day, save for a few nights out each week, Tracy is in yoga pants being a doting mother to her beautiful teens Hunter and Chloe, to whom she attributes her happiness and inspiration. As a strong-headed businesswoman, a social butterfly and a loving person, she’ll be happy to take you out to dinner to enjoy some intriguing conversation as readily as she would let you step in her lovely home and whip you up something delicious from her kitchen. Tracy Stern is simply a New York delight. tracystern.com tracysterntea.com

We Asked Tracy... You have done so many things, what are your plans for the future? Because I love nature, entertaining and gardening I will pioneer a new path and buy a farm to grow organic vegetables, have chickens and live off the grid while entertaining guests and possibly host weddings with my boyfriend. What makes you want to choose that path? The people that know me closely, know that I live a pure and healthy lifestyle. I am not solely a socialite from NYC. I have always had a garden to grow my herbs for my first tea room and cooked from scratch. I'm really Little House on the Prairie girl inside, but like glamourous clothes. I'm a purist that loves adventure and wish to share the space with everyone that will appreciate it. I love to build and will have guest cottages for guests on our 60 acres of property. I'm a free spirit and thrive in nature's beauty. Who wouldn't want to be married in a barn? I know I would... 52 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
How is that you can make the transition from city girl to country farm life? I believe it's not a transition, but an addition to my already free-spirited, fearless lifestyle. I think I'm very Green Acres and will dress up and go out to the coop and gather fresh eggs in a caftan ala Zsa Zsa Gabor. Having a partner that believes in the same vision and has a propensity to celebrate life is what makes it easy. All paths have led me to sharing this space in a communal way and setting tables designing decor and sharing with friends in an amazing space and property. I also have an amazing geodesic dome home in Joshua Tree, California. I have hosted property on Airbnb and my property has been featured on commercial and possible movie for Hollywood. This barn and farm will be open for major events and weddings.

Maya Henry The World's Luckiest Teenager
G
By W.A. Muller | Photos by Antoine Verglas Stylist: Kiki Ingersoll Hair & Makeup: Patrick Ta | The Wall Group
lam girl Maya Henry gained overnight celeb status and tens of thousands of Instagram followers after her $6M Quinceañera party, featuring live performances by Pitbull and Nick Jonas, went viral earlier this year.
Overnight, the world took notice. Dubbed, “The World’s Luckiest Teenager” Maya has since made the rounds on some of the biggest entertainment stages- from Inside Edition to the Steve Harvey Show. She has appeared in specials for Pro7 in Germany and Australia’s Sunrise Morning Show and will star in an upcoming episode of the U.K.’s “Rich Kids of Instagram.” She has been photographed by highfashion photographers Vincent Peters and Antione Verglas and has been featured in fashion spreads for major publications. Most recently, Maya attended the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Awards along with the likes of Beyoncé, Michael Kors, Heidi Klum and Naomi Campbell. The young fashionista looked radiant in a full-length semi-sheer Etro gown with long sleeves and a floral pattern, matched with jewels by David Webb. Maya also sported
a trendy triple braid hairstyle by expert hair stylist Laura Polko and makeup by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta. Allure.com called Maya’s CFDA look one of their “Favorite Beauty Looks” from the award show. Jet-setting from Hillary Clinton fundraisers and photo shoots in NYC to Coachella and dinner at George Clooney’s house in L.A. is a typical weekend for this trendsetting teen. Viva LA has called Maya “the epitome of what it means to be a young and rich Latino in today’s world.” Have you always been an influencer; someone that people get inspired by? In my teens I started to realize I was becoming an influencer. As a younger girl I would study and make good grades, I would play tennis and compete, and I was into fashion and had my own style. I then started Maya’s Corner in an effort to help less fortunate families and kids with school supplies. I realize how important it is to be a positive influence and a good role model to young kids and I hope to inspire others. I hope to become a more significant influencer in our world as time goes on. 25A You recently created your own hashtag #teensforhillary to support Hillary Clinton’s political campaign. How important do you think it is for young people to take a stand in politics, even before they are able to vote? I do support Hillary Clinton even though I am too young to vote. I think it is very important for young people to know what is going on in the world and to care about their future. I feel that as a young woman it is important to have leaders that understand and care about women’s issues and rights. I am also Latina and I have a grandmother that came from Mexico not knowing any English. I think that Hillary Clinton wants everyone to have opportunities in this country. At what point in your life did you discover your interest in philanthropy and activism? I discovered my interest in philanthropy and activism when I was very little at my father’s annual turkey giveaway. I went every year to his giveaway and would see the lines of people wrapped around the streets waiting for a turkey. Seeing all the children in the lines made me understand what a blessed life I have and that I am very fortunate. I created Maya’s Kids Corner at all of my father’s events so that all the children were entertained and could have fun. Maya’s Corner came from that and has since evolved. I am now helping kids with school supplies. Education is the key to all of our futures and this assistance I hope will nurture the minds of children. You are an avid and competitive tennis player. How did you first get involved in tennis? Are there any other sports that you like to practice? My dad started my brother in tennis. He was very good, so I was a little intimidated to start playing but I did it anyway. I doubted myself early on but tried hard and practiced. I entered a small tournament and won! This taught me to work hard and practice and that sticking with something pays off. Now I train in tennis several hours a day and I play at a high competitive level. I really enjoy working out! I also love boxing and Pilates. You attended the 2016 CFDA Awards together with Jonathan Cheban and Coco Rocha. What was your favorite part about the awards? I really enjoyed hanging out with Jonathan, Coco and Dwayne Wade. They were so nice and funny. My favorite part of the awards was the red carpet and seeing all the different outfits that people were wearing.

You were thrown a magnificent Quinceañera earlier this year with guest appearances from world-renowned artists Pitbull and Nick Jonas. Tell us about the most unforgettable moment at the party? Not to brag but my Quinceañera was one of the best parties ever! Nick Jonas was amazing and he is such a nice and friendly guy. Pitbull was so much fun and so energetic. He had everyone dancing and jumping up and down. My event planner was David Monn from New York. He made everything happen and he had the venue built for my party. It took a month to get the venue built and he had 150 people helping him. It is hard to describe how amazing the venue is unless you were there. When we walked in we were amazed even though we knew what to expect. There was a garden room with a live fountain, cherry blossom trees, grass flooring and flowers everywhere. Then the curtains opened to a huge party room that had lounge-style seating, butterflies hanging from the ceiling, huge flowers everywhere, a dance floor in the middle, and an amazing stage set up. My favorite part though was the father/daughter dance. I am very close to my dad and he does a lot for me! You have Mexican heritage on your mother’s side. What role does that play in your life and family traditions? I am an American Mexican! My mother and grandmother’s cultural influence has taught me not only a language, but the spirit of life, family, loyalty, hard work and respect for yourself and others. My grandmother is the earth beneath my feet, my mother is the foundation of my life. Without them I would not be the young woman that I am. Tell us something that most people do not know about you. Most people do not know that I have a wicked sense of humor. I also love to dance! I wish I could have been a dancer. What is your favorite restaurant in New York? Favorite restaurant is Per Se because the food is amazing and they can accommodate the menu to your liking and the service is great. My favorite dish would be the salmon cones and the potato croquettes. Favorite vacation spot? Harbour island, Bahamas, where we rented a villa on the
beach. We visit regularly and I love this place because it is so relaxing and our family gets to spend quality time together. The beach is amazing with turquoise water and the sand is light pink. I enjoy seeing the same locals when we visit because they are so friendly and nice. I also get to snorkel with my dad, which is a special time for me. What song do you listen to on repeat? Bad Decisions by Ariana Grande. I am a huge fan of Ariana Grande because she is so nice to her fans and this particular song is great. Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years I would like to be modeling and attending an Ivy League college or go to Georgetown and become a human rights/international lawyer. If you could meet anyone in the world, whom do you want to meet? The world is full of amazing people. I have had the opportunity to meet many of the people that I admire, like Hillary Clinton, Amal Clooney and Anna Wintour. The person I would like to meet that I haven’t already met would be Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey is a woman that has risen to the top in spite of every possible obstacle in her way. I would love to know what inspired her and still inspires her today. Describe your style. Who has been your greatest style influence? My style varies. I dress for comfort most of the time. My look is either very girly, tomboyish or boho. My style depends on my mood that day. I love dresses and heels and I do like to steal my brother’s bomber jackets or shirts. I have been stealing his clothes since I was a toddler. Do you have any favorite quotes? “When life puts you in a tough situation, don’t say why me?... say try me!!” “You can’t have a million-dollar dream with a minimum-wage work ethic!” Do you have or have you ever had any pets? I have four dogs: Three poodles and one mutt. All but one are rescue dogs. I am very involved with animal shelters and I donate to Mercy for Animals.

Malmasion, in Brookville, is a Near Replica of the French Chateau Napoleon Built for Empress Josephine In 1799.
Memories of Malmaison
H
Story and Photos by Monica Randall
idden away off a long winding road surrounded by ancient mountain laurel in Brookville stands one of Long Island’s bestkept secrets. This magnificent chateau, painted villa pink, is a near replica of the original Malmaison, built to the North of Paris during the middle ages. The imposing fortress had once been owned by the Abby of Saint Denis who used the building as a hospital for the incurably insane. But, the beautiful sounding name in reality means badhouse. The institution during that time was regarded as a place of horrors. Napoleon fell in love with the imposing building, bad vibes and all, and completely renovated it in 1799 for his beloved Empress Josephine. He cheered the place up with wide-open porches, pillared terraces and banks of arched French doors. Outside there were fanciful aviaries filled with exotic birds, and miles of greenhouses and gardens. Here on Long Island’s Gold Coast the American version was built in 1916 by Walter Maynard, who during the summer of 1923, persuaded his good friend, Edith Wharton to stay on her last visit to the U.S. The famed 19th-century writer fell in love with Malmaison’s European authenticity and
60 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
drew inspiration from its meticulously maintained Parisian-style gardens. One enters the Long Island showplace through a pair of 20-foot wrought iron gates that lead into a spacious courtyard banked by high stucco walls set with niches that arch over a pair of marble goddesses. The front façade of the house bears the stamp of Napoleon’s vision. A long “Corps de Logis” that is crowned at the center by an extending balcony. At night the gate frames the house and your eye is drawn to that balcony where a magnificent crystal chandelier shimmers like a fountain of diamonds. The massive ballroom on the second floor is a Cinderella fantasy with rows of Palladian French doors that overlook the formal gardens and pool beyond. Every detail of the room reflects an extravagance of romantic imagery with gilt-trimmed walls and mirrors, and a rare gold Louis XV piano, all under the gaze of hand-painted murals of dancing nymphs. The west side of the house is dominated by the Napoleon library that was brought over from France. The oak paneling is painted over in the Pompeian style decorated with stags, elk and deer. Invisible to the eye are four secret panels hidden in the walls, which may have been used to hide weapons, as during the day Napoleon was under constant attack from his many enemies.
Left: One of Many Vintage Ball Gowns Worn at the Elegant Swan Ball. Right: The Ball Room with its Banks of Arched French Doors, Gilt Mouldings and Hand Painted Murals was a Duplicate of the Original Built in France.
A Possible Haunting Over the years I’d heard rumors that the chateau was haunted. That sort of phenomenon could have been promoted by the sad story that Walter Maynard’s teenage son, confined to a wheelchair due to a fall down the marble stairs, took his own life with the help of his nurse. With such a tragedy and all the dramas that played out during Napoleon’s time, it could very well have triggered a strange mix of nebulous electromagnetic energies. While setting up for a photo shoot some years ago, I saw a crystal vase filled with white lilies shatter on a table for no reason. One night during a storm I was staying in the bedroom that Edith Wharton had used back in the twenties, when the door, which had been locked, flew open by itself. There was no one else in the house at the time. The famous Vogue photographer, Steven Miesel once got an image of a ghost standing by the gold piano on one of the rolls of film he was shooting. Hollywood Comes to Long Island All through the 80s and 90s I leased the property, to be used for TV and film shoots, from the then-owner, John Maddox. Those were hectic years and so many crazy things happened there I could write a book just on that one house, but we only have four pages to cover some of the highlights. Mariah Carey shot her first music video, Emotion, in the ballroom and she skyrocketed to the top of the charts shortly after. All kinds of weird animals, from gorillas, an albino lion, bush babies, a polo pony, and crazy parrots were all photographed in the ballroom along with more celebrities than I can think of. Even Saturday Night Live did a skit there that was so bizarre the neighbors called the police. In 1992, famed director Martin Scorsese fell in love with the house after hearing that Edith Wharton had
stayed there, and for three weeks filmed several scenes for his movie, Age of Innocence. The tragic ill-fated love story starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day Lewis and Wynona Ryder The Swan Ball Back in 1986 the Long Island showplace was used for a fundraiser and the grand salon was transformed into a kind of dream fantasy. The event was sponsored by the North Shore Preservation Society, where guests floated about the candle-lit room in 1860’s hooped gowns, white gloves and feathered and jeweled headdresses. The gold-tasseled, engraved invitation read: For everyone who has ever dreamed of castles in the air, waltzing till dawn, and fairytale endings… you are cordially invited to attend The Swan Ball at Malmaison Victorian dance cards were used by the white-tie-and-tailed gents for the Cotillion waltzes. Outside, dozens of flaming torches bathed the gardens in an ethereal light, as a pair of swans borrowed for the night floated along the still waters of a reflecting pool. The Big Heist Sometime during the night on March 28, two intruders broke a window on the main floor to get into the house. The sprawling residence had been closed up for the winter, the heat and water were turned off and only the electricity was left on to create the illusion that someone was living there. 25A In December I even put up a six-foot Christmas tree in the ballroom so that anyone entering the courtyard would think a family was in residence. An old beige Buick that no longer ran was parked outside the garage in the service drive. I would stop by once a week, as did the Brookville Police to make sure all was well. But in the early morning on that March day when the police made their rounds they found a broken window in Napoleon’s former library and all the silver, oil paintings, statues and antique clocks were gone. I got the call a short time later and was asked to make an inventory of whatever I thought was missing. Robberies were rare in Brookville, and the property was so hidden away and off the beaten track, I knew immediately it had to be the work of someone who lived near by. They had to be watching the house for some time, and were not fooled by the fake Christmas tree. I was devastated, as many of the objects stolen were mine, since they had been used as staging props to dress the rooms when we were filming during the warmer months. A beautiful 18th-century portrait of a woman that had once hung in my great-grandmother’s house in Pennsylvania since 1868 was also gone. I was determined to get everything back no matter how long or what it took. Being psychic, I know that everything: people, places and things, all vibrate on subtle energy frequencies, and it was only a matter of time before I’d begin to tune into those energies and get a kind of replay of what happened. There is a fascinating phenomenon called “remote viewing” a term that didn’t come about until 1978, when our government began training psychics to go out into the field and act as kind of spies to solve complex problems. It seems to work better if the person doing it has some emotional connection to the given situation. Some of the stolen objects had been in my possession for a very long time. But, the bulk of the property, some hundred-and-fiftythousand-dollars’ worth of antique silver, and rare Persian tapestries belonged to the Maddox family. It didn’t take me long to go into a kind of trance-like state, that same night in fact, and the images came in starts and spurts. It’s almost like watching a tiny screen in the brain. The images I saw were unclear, as if on an old TV screen, waves of snow, and wisps of things in and out of focus. In the dark shadows of the wide courtyard of the estate, I saw a brown van pull up, the tall gates were open and two men got out of the van and walked along the right side of the house toward the library. I could not see the numbers on the plates of the van though the moon was only days away from being full. Everything went blank for a few seconds, but then I saw another image, an identical scene where the two men came back a second time to steal some of the oriental rugs that were everywhere in the house. In this second image the moon was full and a clock in my head was poised at midnight. That would put the second robbery that had not happened yet, at the coming full moon on Saturday, only three days away. The two burglars, whoever they were, having made an easy job of raiding the house were going to come back. I also had a strong feeling they were not professional criminals and had never done anything like this before. When I told the Brookville Police about my psychic vision, they thought I was nuts. I begged them to stake the place out that Saturday night, but they said they did not have the manpower to do that, nor could they base it on the blithering visions of a local psychic. I was freaking out as I’d had these insights before and there was always something to them. I could never explain
62 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
why it happens, nor can I make it happen at will. Going out on a limb, I finally said: “If you don’t stake out the house, I will. I’ll hide in the bushes and when they come back and continue to rob the place I will at least get their license plate number,” then just to be mellow dramatic I added: “And if those brazen criminals shoot me, it will be on your head.” Don’t get me wrong, during that whole episode, the police had been devoted to the case, going over every inch of the house, dusting for fingerprints, checking footprints and tire marks on the property. But they were unfamiliar with witchy weirdness, and the paranormal was not a subject covered at the police academy. Still over the years they’d heard enough stories to know that psychics were real. They agreed to stake out the house that coming Saturday during the full moon. I was up half the night waiting by the phone, and sure enough at 2 am, I got a call, they caught the culprits red handed! They arrived at the house at 12:10, so I was off by ten minutes. They drove a beige van, not brown, but hey, same color range. They had no criminal record, and were teenagers who lived close by, and were classmates at the local Jericho High School. Of course the dramatic apprehension was featured the following night on the evening news, and got a half-page story in Newsday, April 1, 1991, page 8 titled “Teens Charged in Estate Burglary” by Liz Willen. The police were the heroes, claiming they were following a hunch, yeah, right. All the silver and tapestries were returned to the owners of the house, but alas, none of my Gold Coast treasures were returned to me. They had been sold as soon as they were stolen. Months later the two young men were convicted of burglary as charged and I was awarded a settlement for the artworks lost. Earlier in this article I mentioned that Martin Scorsese filmed at Malmaison for three weeks for his movie, Age of Innocence. This took place as soon as Malmaison was opened for the season that spring. The production had a seemingly endless budget and set designers transformed the mansion back to the way it looked in the1880s. Truckloads of furnishings, paintings, and a forest of palm trees; silk drapes and exotic foods were shipped from all over the world to create a setting where Edith Wharton herself had at one time been a guest. The beauty of the chateau when lit up at night while they were filming inspired a sense of beauty, mystery and awe. While standing at the far end of the garden looking up at the house, you could almost feel a kind of sublevel of reality that seemed to permeate the very walls with the energies of all the souls who lived there before. Malmaison was sold in 1996 and I have not been back there since. Authors note: For anyone wishing to learn more about these manor houses, there are dozens of illustrated lectures on the subject. OIJI Refined Authentic Korean
T
By Sara Barry
he under-the-radar East Village restaurant, Oiji, serves upscale Korean cuisine in eco-chic surroundings. Taking over the former space of Korean spot Dok Suni, Oiji tweaks traditional Korean fare so that it can be served on small plates. Oiji elevates classic Korean cuisine to a higher level, as it is made by not one, but two highly-credentialed chefs. If you are thinking that the East Village doesn’t need another Korean restaurant, Oiji will prove you wrong — time and time again its creative menu has made diners’ mouths water while giving them a small taste of Korea. Oiji’s space is warm and well-ordered, with exposed brick and distressed wood walls. Part of the dining room features a chic table that could have been taken straight out of a reading room. The simple and clean decor, and the earthy atmosphere, featuring dried flowers and herbs and fla-vorful smells coming from the kitchen, complement the space and contribute to its warm ambiance. The restaurant’s menu is small and to the point, with dishes intended to be shared by an entire table, but flavor is definitely not compromised by size. You must try the flavor-packed Buttered Rice, soaked in Warm Butter and topped with a Poached Egg and a few slices of Braised Beef Shank. The homemade Honey Butter Chips, invoking imagery of kettle-cooked chips, are soaked in a fatty, but delicious French Butter and topped with a touch of Honey and Cayenne. This is also Oiji’s only dessert, a dish that is based on a bag of chips that led to a craze in Korea. 64 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
Try the Beef Tartare with Ramp Aioli, Cold Buckwheat Noodles, Truffle Seafood Broth with Siz-zling Crispy Rice, or the Handmade Dumplings in White Beef Broth. Vegetarian? Try the Homemade Tofu with Scallion Soy Vinaigrette or the Morel Mushroom Salad with Pine Nuts. Aside from the homemade potato chips, as side dishes, Oiji offers Assorted Kimchi or Lotus Leaf Wrapped Sticky Rice. The restaurant offers a notable cocktail list, but its most well-known libation is the Korean-classic, soju. Oiji makes a deep red-colored soju with pomegranate vinegar and offers drinks like the Namsan Pine, a tannic drink that consists of White Rum, Pine Extract, Honey, Lemon, Egg White and Lavender. Both chefs, Brian Kim and Tae Kyung Ku, grew up in South Korea and met in culinary school in the United States. After departing to master their cooking skills — Mr. Kim at Bouley, and Mr. Ku at Gramercy Tavern and his family’s restaurant back home — they reunited years later and cre-ated Oiji, a haven for creative, refined authentic Korean fare, with hopes of giving America a new perspective on Korean cuisine. 119 1st Avenue New York, NY 10003 646.767.9050 oijinyc.com

LADYBIRD Vegetarian Tapas Downtown
L
By Sara Barry
overs of plant-based cuisine will feel at home at Ladybird, a new vegetarian establishment in the West Village. At this new restaurant, housed in the old Bourgeois Pig space, restaurateur Ravi DeRossi has created a haven for vegetarian tapas, seasonal cuisine and creative cocktails. Upon entering Ladybird, you are greeted by dazzling decor, featuring exquisite chandeliers, marble tabletops, and a teal, white and gold color scheme. The bar is elegant and soft lighting puts you at ease. There is also plentiful greenery adorning the small space. Adding to the relaxing atmosphere is the fact that this tapas bar is hidden from the public eye. As more people discover this gem, the wait is sure to be longer and the atmosphere bustling. Ladybird’s menu is light, creative and nutritious. Chef Daphne Cheng, a pioneer in vegan cuisine, makes vegetables the centerpiece of her meals by using them innovatively and juxtaposing ingredients in creative ways. One of many dishes that are testament to Chef Cheng’s talent is the Mushroom Paté Toast with Fig Compote and Black Vinegar — the combination of flavors creates a nice, rich spread. Or, try the Cauliflower Toast with Chive Pesto, Lemon Ricotta and Chia, a creamy and savory dish that is light yet flavorful. For a healthy spin on a classic dish, try the Quinoa Croqueta with Shiitake Béchamel, Szechuan Salsa and Crème Fraiche. If you’re a New Yorker, you probably cherish avocado toast dearly, and in that case, try the Avocado Toast with Honeydew, Riesling Gastrique and Maldon Sea Salt.
68 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
In addition to its delectable cuisine, Ladybird has a vast selection of wine and cocktails. Try the Red Rail, one of the restaurant’s bird-themed cocktails—it has beet juice, Niepoort tawny port, bitter amaro and lime. The Himalayan Quail with tangerine juice, French dry apple cider, Thai chili and lime salt, or the Dodo with a slushy of avocado, shiso syrup and sparkling wine are also great choices. These cocktails are created by Ariel Arce, who has over 10 year’s experience and a background in wine and spirits, with stints at well-known restaurants such as The Office @ The Aviary in Chicago and Picholine in NYC. DeRossi, also owner of restaurant Mother of Pearl, says that his venture into plant-based cuisine is relatively new. With the opening of Ladybird, the pork-based menu of the Bourgeois Pig was replaced with vegetarian cuisine. This transition represents DeRossi’s desire to eventually eliminate all meat dishes in his restaurants due to his love of animals. DeRossi will be donating a percentage of Ladybird’s profits to his BEAST Foundation, a nonprofit animal advocacy group he launched last year that seeks to help end animal cruelty.

Beasts & Bottles Brings French Bistro Fare to Brooklyn Heights
A
By Georgette Malitsis
fter spending a leisurely afternoon of shopping through the long stretch of Atlantic Avenue, stop by Brooklyn’s newest rotisserie and grill, Beasts & Bottles, for classic artisan rotisserie cuisine. Located in the historic neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights, the eatery is also a go-to wine destination, matching traditional French cuisine with an extensive French wine list. Chic and trendy, the restaurant features blackened steel, a whitewashed brick wall and reclaimed wide-plank floors. The space is furnished with sleek leather banquettes and decorated with antique finishing touches. In the center of the space is an antique Tiger Maple butcher block serving as a wine station and guests will also marvel at the exposed rotisserie open in the back of the restaurant. The selling point of Beasts & Bottles is their succulent rotisserie–organic and farm-raised; the varieties of meat and poultry are carefully selected from small production farms. Offering three types of rotisserie, Provencal, Truffled and Hoisin Chicken¬–guests may choose from a selection of tender and flavorful preparations, each unique in flavor. From Indiana’s Crystal Valley Farms is the Provencal Chicken, air-chilled, vegetable fed and antibiotic free. The crispy chicken is then infused with rosemary, thyme and garlic and is preserved with lemon and butter. The Truffled Chicken uses Sasso chickens, a French breed, alive the morning they are delivered. These chickens are slow roasted, finished off with a reduced chicken and black truffle jus and the braised leg meat is presented in a truffled pot pie. A rather bold flavor of rotisserie is the Hoisin Chicken, glazed with a chili-infused hoisin sauce, garnished with roasted peanuts, cilantro and served with hoisin ginger-glazed wings. 70 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
Beasts & Bottles Roast Duck Feast is also a delightful choice straight from the rotisserie. Feeding up to four people, the air-dried Long Island Duck includes duck charcuterie smoked and toasted duck breast, and pulled confit with seasonal sides and accompaniments. Beyond rotisserie, enjoy delicacies such as specialty French Terrines, Pates and charcuterie to be accompanied with a glass of Beast & Bottles wine offerings. Enjoy a taste of both sea and land with Grilled Octopus & Pork Belly, served with confit potato, fennel and purslane salad and chorizo foam. Bill’s Townhouse Old School American Done Right
I
By Jennifer Pelaez
n the heart of Midtown Manhattan, Bill’s Townhouse stands apart from its neighboring restaurants and eateries with its impressive upscale American cuisine set in a stately East Side townhouse that not only boasts an interesting history, but pays homage to the charming nineteenth century and the days of prohibition.
with Ricotta and Fried Sage are everything you would expect and Bill’s House Made Buttered Egg Noodles is heavenly, rich and delectable, as the name implies. Other highlights include the Bone-in Filet Mignon and Beef Wellington. Be sure to leave room for dessert since their Yellow Cake, served with Chocolate Ganache and Whipped Cream, is out of this world.
The restaurant was once the notable site of a prominent, prohibition-era speakeasy; the three-story townhouse dates back to the 1800s. Just before Prohibition, the premises were transformed into Bill’s Gay Nineties, known for its lively entertainment and sing-along piano bar. Recently reopened this past spring by restaurateur Curt Huegel, it has been transformed into a well-balanced blend of old and new while continuing to embody that same nostalgic vibe, allowing guests to take a walk down memory lane. The decor makes this possible with vintage artwork and prints, along with a fireplace and stuffed animal heads while leather banquettes and dark blue walls ensure a feeling of comfort and coziness.
In the spirit of its heritage, Bill’s Townhouse is also a great spot for cocktails and live music downstairs in the tavern, which features a beautifully preserved bar complete with old pictures and paintings that bring you back in time. Don’t miss out on some of New York’s best young artists playing a mix of standards and classic soul, five nights a week. Larger parties can reserve the Private Dining Room on the third floor, perfect for a seated lunch or dinner which can accommodate up to 22 people and can also be connected to the Parlour Room for a larger event space. Indulge in classic style with a Pink Negroni or a Vesper Martini as you forget the present and imagine the grandeur and glam of the Gilded Age.
Casually elegant, the tables are set with starched linens and the diverse menu features contemporary American classic dishes including mouthwatering steaks and a tempting raw bar. The Lobster Thermidor and Seared Hamachi are a must, while the Crab Cake with Cabbage Slaw and Tartar Sauce is another frequently ordered appetizer. The Veal and Porcini Meatballs

For a traditional sandwich, try the Salmon Lox, the Foie Gras, or the Grilled Chicken. Another great option is the flavorful Apple-Manchego Panini, with Manchego Cheese, Fig Jam and Sliced Apple. While it may not seem like a brunch spot, on Saturdays and Sundays OLMA does serve an impressive selection of brunch favorites. The sixteen-dollar Prix Fixe menu includes either French Toast Sticks or a Garden Salad, plus your choice of beverage. You can also choose from Baked Eggs with Ham, Turkey, or Salmon Lox, Poached Eggs with Hollandaise Sauce and Home Fried Potatoes, or a Croissant with Salmon Lox, Arugula, Tomatoes and Cream Cheese. OLMA also offers a notable selection of Champagne, wine, signatures and a full liquor bar. The opulent OLMA is decorated beautifully, and boasts an intimate, yet social dining room. Cardinal A Touch of Brooklyn in Asbury Park, NJ
H
By Marianne Belmonte
ave you ventured a ride to the Jersey Shore lately? If not, now is the time. Approximately one hour from Manhattan and the outer boroughs it’s a trip you won’t regret having taken. First stop on your bucket list should be to the town of Asbury Park. Once a thriving beach resort destination, it fell into disrepair for many years, but for the last 10 years or so has been making a miraculous comeback, thanks in part to the thriving Gay population that has embraced the town and turned it into a destination honoring both the old and the new. Artists have followed suit and today Asbury Park is home to a wonderfully diverse and yes some might say a Bohemian crowd. While in Asbury Park, either before or after your time spent on the beach or walking the boardwalk, your next destination should be Cardinal Provisions located at 513 Bangs Avenue. Following the atmosphere of Asbury Park, Cardinal Provisions is as eclectic as the town itself. Open daily for breakfast and lunch from 8am-3pm, one cannot ask for a better culinary treat. I recently had the pleasure of devouring a delicious brunch. The café itself is nestled between old-time storefronts, and if you’re old enough or grew up in a city, it will remind you of walking the shopping districts. Having grown up in Brooklyn myself I can tell you that the décor and ambiance is very reminiscent of those times with the added attraction of restoring and repurposing items that others would have discarded. My intentions for saying all this is to just let you know that the cafe is very welcoming and well, just puts a smile on your face. Now for the best part of all: it is also a culinary feast.

The collaboration of chefs and owners Laura Brahn and Grace Crossman is a match made in heaven. They have taken basic breakfast items using only seasonal and farm fresh ingredients and turned them into pure magic by not being afraid to experiment with ingredients from different cultures, giving even the classic Jersey Pork Roll Egg and Cheese a whole new twist. Instead of a Kaiser roll they use brioche buns and baguettes. Aioli condiments along with top-shelf Dijon mustards are also used to enhance the flavor of the eggs, cheese and meat-whether it is a chorizo or a sage sausage or smoked bacon. I certainly would be remiss if I didn’t mention their Chicken and Waffles dish. In my humble opinion this Southern classic is a must. Share it with a friend as the portion is more than enough and this way it will leave you room for another wonderful creation, or lest I forget to tell you about their out-of-this-world muffins, donuts and croissants. I could go on and on about my experience at Cardinal Provisions but I think it is best that you find out for yourself and take a ride down to the Jersey Shore. You can find more information about Cardinal Provisions on their website at crdnal.com; take a look at their menu but I do know if you do take my advice and make the trip you will not be disappointed. 513 Bangs Avenue Asbury Park, NJ 07712 732.898.7194 crdnal.com

Stone fruit, also called drupes, may sound exotic, but this fruit group includes some of the most popular and accessible types of fruit during the summer months, such as peaches, nectarines, mangos, cherries, and more. Defined by their large, hard pits, stone fruit are delicious and flavorful and are amazingly ripe this time of year, which is the perfect time to take advantage and make them the star of a variety of dishes. To start, there are some wonderful local farms where you can pick your own stone fruit, which is a fun activity to do with family or friends on a gorgeous summer day. This way, you can ensure the produce you’re getting is organic and perfectly ripe, while at the same time supporting our local farms. Some farms I recommend are Davis Peach Farm or Lewin Farms in Wading River, Patty’s Berries and Bunches in Mattituck, or Wickham’s Fruit Farm in Cutchogue.
After spending the day picking fruit, it’s a great idea to wind down with a refreshing rose sangria. Start with a chilled dry rose, such as Cotes de Provence, add some elderflower liquor and vanilla beans, sparkling water, and stone fruits such as chopped cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, and nectarines. A long day in the sun deserves a cold beverage! Another fun thing to do with the fruits of your labor, so to speak, is make jams and preserves. No matter what brand of jam or preserves you buy from a store, it always tastes like it was purchased off of a shelf. Making it yourself is the perfect way to guarantee fresh and delicious spreads. There are so many recipes available that you can make based on your preferences, and it’s a surprisingly easy process. Not only will you have nutritious spreads for you kids when they go back to school, but jars of stone fruit preserves and jams make fabulous gifts. When you think of bruschetta you tend to imagine a savory snack, so why not create something a bit unexpected with stone fruit? Grill or toast some thicker bread like sourdough or ciabatta and have it ready for your ingredients. Then, grill the stone fruit to give it a nice char and pair it with a spread like a honey mascarpone cheese or fresh ricotta and place it on top of the bread. But don’t stop there – you can get creative and add anything you want with a stone fruit
base. Add a balsamic glaze and you’ve got the perfect combination of sweet and savory. If you’re grilling fruit for bruschetta, make extra and add the rest to a salad. In the summer, salads can sometimes feel a little stagnant, but fresh grilled fruit will add a delicious pop of flavor. Try a few different combinations, such as grilled peach with baby arugula, goat cheese, and prosciutto, or a grilled plum salad with purple basil, blue cheese, and balsamic. The summer is a fantastic time to make homemade pies given how many delicious fruits are ripe this time of year. Stone fruits are perfect in pies; serve them warm with vanilla bean ice cream for a crowd pleasing dessert spread. Instead of a traditional pie, try baking a galette instead – it’s an open faced pie made with flaky, buttery crust. Place your stone fruit in the middle and bake it until the center bubbles. You don’t even need a pie pan – you can just use a baking sheet and it’s a fabulous way to make the fruit the star of the dish. With only a few more weeks of summer left, take advantage of this delicious fruit when it’s in season. Using fresh, ripe ingredients, there’s no telling what types of amazing creations you’ll be able to make in your kitchen! September 2016 | 79

Vienna’s Hotel Imperial Celebrates 153rd Birthday By Joe Alexander
T
he Hotel Imperial in Vienna, Austria celebrated its 153rd birthday this June with a meticulous 20-million-dollar restoration by Starwood Hotels. This is Vienna’s most exclusive and regal address. Designed by architect Arnold Zenetti in 1863, the Imperial was originally planned to be the city palace and residence of Prince Phillip of Württemberg and his wife Marie Therese, Archduchess of Austria. After living there for five years, the royal couple sold their home after the city decided that a new street would pass through their gardens. It was converted into a hotel, opening right in time for the Universal Exposition in 1873. This celebrated hotel is situated in a prime location on the city’s Ring Boulevard and offers easy access to all
82 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
the cultural highlights of Vienna including The Royal Lipizzans, The Belvedere Palace and The Vienna Boys Choir. Home of The Stars and The Infamous The halls and suites of this five-star hotel are filled with history, character, charm and luxury. For almost a century and a half, The Imperial has hosted Emperors, Kings, Heads of State and movie and pop stars including Lady Gaga, Queen Elizabeth II, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Barbara Streisand, Charlie Chaplin and Sarah Bernhardt. It has also had its share of infamous guests. Adolf Hitler once worked here as a young man doing menial jobs before returning in short lived triumph in 1938 and Italian dictator Benito
Mussolini stayed at the hotel during World War II. Guests of the state usually stay at the hotel, such as Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger and the Emperor and Empress of Japan who were there recently. The restoration has reinforced the hotel’s imperial grandeur while creating new restaurants and lounges where the elite of Vienna and sophisticated travellers now meet. The Royal Suite The Imperial’s interior design reflects nineteenth century Viennese elegance with accents of ornate marble, hand-carved statues and massive crystal chandeliers. The Royal Staircase in the lobby led us down hallways with high stucco ceilings to our suite. The Royal Suite, the hotel’s grandest quarters, reflects the rich historic grandeur that the hotel was built upon. The rooms boast 23-foot high ceilings with private balconies that offer scenic views of the Altstadt skyline and comes with your own butler to attend to your every whim. The suite is filled with precious oil paintings, antique furniture and orchids. Like the staterooms of all historic palaces,
the Imperial Suites were located on the lower floors to spare the guests of yesteryears the inconvenience of climbing several flights of stairs. But even though today an elevator whisks you to your suite, ascending the princely staircase makes a fitting overture to entering your own imperial quarters. The Imperial Torte Try the Imperial’s elaborate breakfast buffet featuring exotic Viennese pastries and, at dinnertime, reserve a table at the hotel’s OPUS Restaurant, where creativity and the culinary arts are blended with Imperial traditions by Executive Chef Rupert Schnait. Order the Austrian Alpine beef, wild trout or free-range organic chicken. Don’t forget to order the Imperial Torte for dessert. This orgasmic chocolate truffle is a specialty of the house and is based on a secret recipe created for Emperor Franz Joseph when he opened the hotel. I suggest booking the Royal Suite at $2,800 a night. imperialvienna.com September 2016 | 83

TheEvoking Chatwal a Bygone Era
J
By Lisa Loverro
ust steps away from the Theater District, The Chatwal Hotel is centrally located in NYC and provides the perfect place to stay for a weekend jaunt into the Big Apple. While the hotel is located at the “crossroads of the world,” The Chatwal actually sits on a relatively quiet block on West 44th Street and offers a “sense of place” within the hustle and bustle of the city streets outside its doors. The 76 rooms are meticulously designed with luxurious touches, from the Frette sheets and down duvets to leather-covered desks. The hotel design also includes a station-style clock in the lobby, closets that resemble travel trunks and vintage posters on the walls; all serving as a nod to the historic era of the early 20th century, when train travel was glamorous and reserved for the more refined set. The bathrooms
88 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
offer Jacuzzi baths, marble floors and mirrored walls, with polished metal and black stone. Backgammon is provided on the coffee table and the minibar contains an eclectic mix of treats and is a nice surprise where you’ll find jellybeans, candy cigarettes, playing cards, magazines and books. Delving into the decorated history of this landmark building, American architect Stanford White, known for his design of the Washington Square Arch and the original Madison Square Garden (where he was famously murdered by his mistress’ husband at the Garden’s rooftop restaurant) completed construction in 1905 of the hotel’s address at 130 West 44th Street for The Lambs Club, a prestigious theatrical club with members including John Barrymore, Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire.
Now, more than 100 years since these icons of theater set up shop at The Lambs Club, the building has been restored into one of the Theater District’s more luxurious hotels. The re-launch of this hotel was meticulously thought out and the developers worked very closely with New York’s Landmarks Preservation Committee to be sure the building maintained its landmark status. You’ll see the original façade still intact along with an 18th-century French fireplace (a gift from White), allowing today’s patrons to let their imaginations wander back to the days when a roaring fire crackled while aristocrats mingled together sipping scotch. Still true today, The Lambs Club Bar and Restaurant, located next to the lobby, is a place to see and be seen. The Lambs Club Bar and Restaurant itself could be considered a boy’s club of sorts as it exudes that feeling of masculinity with its red leather chairs, enveloping banquets and floor-to-ceiling windows all set within an Art Déco
design matching the hotel lobby. Helmed by Chef/restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian and designed by Thierry Despont, this sophisticated retreat is a glamorous establishment that uses ebonized walls and its red leather seating to welcome patrons for power business meetings throughout the day. Serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner the restaurant is always busy and reservations are recommended. It also offers a dedicated menu for the pre-theater crowd, if you might be enjoying a night out on Broadway. There are refined cocktails created with freshly pressed juices and chilled with hand-cut ice. For dinner, start with the delectable octopus and then move onto the Lamb Foggotini or the Pheasant Sausage. Every Tuesday and Wednesday evening The Lambs Club features live jazz and on Thursday evenings a DJ spins from 6pm onward. thechatwalny.com September 2016 | 89

This 267-room, AAA Five Diamond exclusive resort on the Pacific coast of Mexico, just 15 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Nayarit, is a sophisticated and tranquil escape from the larger crowds you’ll find in Puerto Vallarta. The two-floored Wellness suites have a variety of fitness equipment, including dumbbells, yoga mats and a recumbent bike. The “pièce de résistance,” however, is their private terrace 90 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan

In the evening, the Wellness suites help you fall into a restful night’s sleep with an Alchimia Apothecary Aromatherapy Kit with scents ranging from cedar and lavender to tangerine and myrrh. In the morning, a revitalizing shower with Vitamin C-enriched water greets your skin with a fresh citrus scent to begin the day. The Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit has a more boutique feel rather than a large resort and the dining restaurants are all gourmet. The beach is pristine and the water is home to dolphins, migrating whales and sea turtles. But beyond this gem of a hotel is the location itself. Room Mate HOTELS Breaking the Rules of Hospitality
W
By W.A. Muller
hat’s a champion equestrian to do after successfully competing on horseback for Spain in the Olympics and the European championships? Launch a hotel brand, of course! Enrique “Kike” Sarasola, a three-time Olympian and determined entrepreneur, started Room Mate Hotels, an international chain of boutique hotels with a global vision, in 2005. Guided by the philosophy that the best way to travel is by visiting friends whose lifestyle, location and familiarity with a destination make one feel right at home, Room Mate Hotels currently has 22 properties and approximately 1,500 rooms around the world. Each hotel has focused on the getting “Three B’s” right: Bed, Breakfast and Bath, to make a truly memorable and comfortable stay. As a result, the brand is growing at a quick pace: Room Mate just opened the doors on hotels in Milan and Barcelona, and has new properties scheduled to open in cities including Rotterdam, Florence, Rome, Paris and Madrid. Appealing to customers seeking affordable luxury, each hotel is conceived as a “home” and staffed by a team that opens doors to travelers desiring comfort, warmth and a welcoming spirit. Design is significant to the Room Mate Hotels experience, and Sarasola has tapped renowned architects and designers such as Patricia Urquiola or Lorenzo Castillo to style his properties. Room Mate prides itself on swimming against the current and breaking the rules of a traditional hotel company. When Sarasola founded the company, he used his entrepreneurial thinking to examine the hotel experience from a new perspective. Sarasola personally visits each property and gives Room Mate guests the option to luxuriate in their rooms; unlike conventional hotels,
92 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
breakfast is served until noon and late check out is always an option. He demonstrated an unorthodox approach again last year by offering free Wi-Fi not only in his hotels, but throughout the city. The innovative program, called WiMate Total Wi-Fi, gives guests a router that works throughout the city, for up to five devices and created a major buzz among hoteliers and travelers alike. Recently, Sarasola has turned his attention to North America. In the past year, the company established new headquarters for the Americas, and grew the portfolio to include three properties in the U.S., with more on the horizon. Room Mate Grace, the brand’s North American flagship property in the heart of New York City, embodies the brand’s character. The 130-room hotel just emerged from a major top-to-bottom renovation and is generating excitement among travelers and New Yorkers alike. Named for a fictitious character that personifies the hotel’s character, it comes to life with whimsical design by Lorenzo Castillo, gracious service and a can’t-be-beat location in midtown. Don’t forget your swimsuit: It’s one of the only hotels in New York City with an indoor pool and a swim-up bar. Having tackled the world of competitive athletics and the world of hospitality, Sarasola is just getting started. In 2014, Sarasola entered the world of technology by launching BeMate.com, an innovative service that combines apartment stays with all of the amenities of a hotel. With Room Mate hotels in New York, Miami and cities around the world, and BeMate.com on the rise, smart travelers will have a front row seat. room-matehotels.com/en

through well-developed highly established, artistic and non-invasive plastic surgery methods and techniques. Dr. Pober’s practice HQ is located at his Joint Commission Certified Surgery Center on Park Avenue. He has also recently launched the PoberMD Medi Spa in the quaint town of Ridgewood, New Jersey. As part of the #1 hospital system in New Jersey and #4 in the tristate area, this hospital offers 4-star hotel amenities in the safety of the Hackensack University Health Network to his many out of town patients coming for minor to total body makeovers. akin to what he offers on Park Avenue.
His practice focuses on cosmetic surgery, face and body contouring, including facelifts, rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty for the face; tummy tucks and liposculpture for the body. Dr. Pober’s work demonstrates the importance of looking good and feeling even better, achieving natural results that bring out the best in every client’s unique features. Each procedure is highly individualized, ensuring that the area of the body undergoing treatment complements the natural structure of the face or body. Although the core of his practice is surgery, Dr. Pober is recognized as an Expert Injector and offers non-surgical treatments, specializing in injectables, which in his hands compete favorably with surgical results. Many clients are very pleased with their results when using injectables thus holding off the need for invasive surgery for many years. Safe and convenient, inJectables- such as Radiesse, Belotero, and Juvederm Voluma - are offered selectively at his medi-spa along with non-invasive skin tightening and fat reducing technology. This provides a good way of introducing non-surgical improvements for many patients who shy away from surgery. These non-invasive treatments also give patients flexibility, allowing them to use different types of fillers and techniques in various areas of the face to achieve their desired natural look - INSTANTLY. Cutting-edge developments in the field of injectables have allowed this technique to come closer and closer to what one could have achieved with surgery. However, the combination of using fillers and surgery do give the best and most natural results possible. Using precise surgical techniques, many patients achieve their sought after results with both surgery and injectables with very little to no downtime

HOW TO REVERSE SUN DAMAGE Try the New “Facelift of the Future”
Y
By Katherine Sempecos
ou're a pro when it comes to protecting against sun damage. You've got sunscreen on your keychain, in your lip balm, and all over your skin. But you could still have plenty of sun damage left over from your youth. (Remember squirming away from your mom as she tried to coat you with sunblock?) Unfortunately, sun damage isn't only skin-deep. UV radiation alters the actual DNA of your skin cells, causing lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and even cancer. But here's a ray of (UV-free) light: You can reverse the damage. "Whenever you start protecting yourself from the sun, you will stop the process of additional damage and start to reverse, to some extent, what you've already accumulated. So summer vacation is over, but as your souvenir you’ve gotten MORE sun damage than ever before! It’s not too late though. You can boost your skin's health (and score a flawless complexion) with these four easy tricks of the trade: Step 1: Exfoliate The Right Way You want to smooth your skin to create brightness and luster, and a perfect combination of a chemical and mechanical exfoliation is the best way to do just that. This combination exfoliation both dissolves dead skin cells and then lightly scrubs off the excess, evening out skin tone and leaving skin looking super smooth and glowing. When choosing a combination exfoliant, opt for a product with at least a 8–10% concentration of glycolic acid and salicylic acid as well as natural green tea polyphenols, vitamins A-C-E and Co-Q10 96 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
like PRISMRx’s Skin Enlightening Polish ($60, www.prismmedspa.com). The active ingredients are vital in removing the extra layers of dead cells that are holding all of the brown pigment that has clumped and accumulated over the years. And whichever exfoliant you choose, follow the directions! Step 2: Beat Brown Spots The next step is to rid yourself of those brown splotches. While the product you need is commonly called "skin bleach," there's nothing bleachy about it. It will have the end effect of lightening the brown areas of your skin, but it will do so by stopping the skin's uneven production of melanin (brown pigment) that your skin churns out when it tries to fight UV radiation. Look for a professional bleaching kit, like PRISM Rx’s “Skin Brightening Kit”. This unique physician’s grade kit includes 6 professional products to replace a medical spa skin brightening treatment. The PRISM Rx kit includes the Gentle Glow Cleanser, Skin Enlightening Polish, Rebrightalyze Super C 20% Serum, Customized Hydroquinone and Kojic acid pads (the active ingredients) with a 2 – 4 % concentration, to be applied two to three times a day on the darkened areas, Illuminating Eye Cream for dark circles, puffiness and to reduce the signs of aging around the eyes, Retinol Rapid Wrinkle Repair Cream, ($515-20% 25A Mag discount = $412, prismmedspa.com) Bonus points If you followed step 1 before jumping to step 2–exfoliation actually helps the hydroquinone work better by allowing it to better penetrate the skin.
Step 3: Burn No More To maintain your improvement, use sunscreen every day to prevent additional damage. New FDA recommendations emphasize using sunscreen labeled as broad spectrum (meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with SPF values of 15 or higher. Try DD “Dynamic-Do-It-All” Mineral SPF 50+ Cream ($50, prismmedspa.com). To maximize the sunscreen's protection, apply it 30 minutes before exposure and reapply at least every two hours. The amount of sunscreen that you need to use for your entire body, assuming you're at the beach and you're just wearing a bathing suit, is about an ounce in order to get the actual SPF value. Step 4: Arm Yourself With Antioxidants PRISM recommends nightly use of antioxidant-rich topical creams. Body creams such as “Smooth & Firm” ($75, prismmedspa.com). Antioxidants help protect the skin's DNA to prevent cancer while also protecting the collagen and elastic tissue from free radicals that can cause wrinkles and sagging skin. Though eating antioxidant-rich foods is important, you should also apply creams and serums, like PRISM Rx Rebrightalyze Super C 20% Serum ($120, prismmedspa.com) with additional antioxidants that the skin can absorb directly. Vitamin C–based antioxidants are best for reducing uneven brown pigmentation, but you can't go wrong with any type of antioxidant. And since antioxidants won't do dead skin cells any good, follow step 1 and exfoliate. (Sorry—we just had to say it again!) For Deeper Sun Damage, including dark sun spots and hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, fine and deep wrinkles, as well as textural irregularities, the most advanced Radio Frequency Fractional treatment is now available! Featured on “Good Morning America”, “The Doctors”, “Dr. OZ”, “Extra TV” and much of the print media (Vogue, IN Style, Marie Claire, Bazaar, etc) Venus VIVA is the latest Anti Aging treatment that has been touted as the “Facelift of the Future”! ASK DR. CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI, D.O. By Carlos Lacayo Dr. Christopher Calapai returns once again to keep us informed on all things stem cells by answering some of the most frequently asked questions on the topic. As the Stem Cell Specialist, are you still learning new things about stem cells? Yes, because we’re seeing more interesting additional results with patients with every treatment. So, if we do a treatment for diabetes and their vision or hearing gets better we’re constantly learning from the patient; we’re learning more about how people respond. What results have you seen using stem cells? My stem cell treatments have achieved remarkable results in clinical trials on patients with conditions as varied as Alzheimer's, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, frailty syndrome, heart, kidney and liver failure, lupus, MS and Parkinson's. What kinds of evaluations need to take place before a stem cell procedure is performed? We do a comprehensive medical nutrition approach where we’re looking at vitamins, minerals, hormones, absorption and digestion. We’re covering all the bases so we can correct low hormones or vitamin deficiency. Is there any connection at all between anti aging medicine and stem cells? Anti-aging medicine involves taking steps to get the body functioning at the level that it did years before by raising vitamin and mineral levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. The use of stem cells fits into anti-aging treatment because when injected, they go 98 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
to wherever there is damage or degeneration. They seek out the body’s distress signals, so if the pancreas is damaged, stem cells can get to the pancreas because of those distress signals, take on the identity of pancreatic cells, make more pancreatic cells that make insulin, and now the diabetic will make insulin again, and then their sugar comes down. Combine that with the exercise, vitamins, minerals, and hormones and you’ve reversed a very damaging process. How much would a stem cell procedure cost? It depends on the area they want to treat and that’s something that gets explained when they visit the doctor’s office because we have to figure out what their requirements and needs are. Explain the stem cell research debate a little bit The debate has always been should you use stem cells from someone else’s body because your body could reject them so we only recommend your own stem cells; that’s how you get your best results. How do you go about talking to someone with an interest in stem cells? People call my radio show and ask questions. I also point them towards the medical research on my website as well as videos from patients that have used stem cells that is also on my website. It’s about directing them towards easy-to-read research that I’ve set up for them on the website.

Dr. Kevin Tehrani The Secret to Looking Natural Forever
S
By Nicole Sawyer
tep aside Kylie Jenner and J. Lo, the days that women transformed their appearances to mimic your larger than life lips and bountiful behinds are limited.
New York based plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Tehrani told us natural is in. “Women want to look and feel real,” he said. “Instead of pointing to pictures of their favorite stars, people want to look like the best Instagramed version of themselves,” he added. The biggest trend he is seeing; smaller is sexy. “My patients are showing less photos of their favorite celebrities and if they do show me a photo of Kylie Jenner they say, I like her lips but smaller,” Dr. Tehrani explained. Dr. Kevin Tehrani is a world-renowned plastic surgeon voted by his colleagues as one of the top 10 plastic surgeons in New York. His specialty, painless and scar free aesthetic breast augmentation. He is one of the only breast surgeons to successfully perform a technique called TUBA or Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, on a daily basis. TUBA is a unique procedure to increase your breast size without an actual incision around the nipple or even near your breasts. Instead, a small incision is made inside the belly button or through any existing scar you already have. “The result of this type of enlargement looks the same as using other methods, but without the telltale scar on the breast,” Dr. Tehrani explained. Another popular procedure that gives you natural results is called “Breast Fat Injection.” It’s ideal for women who only want to increase their breast size by a cup and get rid of unwanted fat in other areas of their body, Dr. Tehrani transfers fat from undesirable locations and sculpts it into perfectly 100 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
shaped breasts. “People are going more conservative, subtle changes for their own self-improvement. They don’t want it to be so in your face,” he said. Dr. Tehrani revealed the number one reason people even consider plastic surgery is “not becasue they look in the mirror and think ‘what is this ugly thing’. It’s that they think, ‘If I took care of this I would look so much better and feel better about myself,’” he explained. But perhaps his most ground-breaking discovery is a procedure called Painless ERBE Jet Breast augmentation where he uses water pressure techniques and numbing medicine in place of the typical Electrosurgical Generator that causes pain in patients. A recent study performed by Dr. Tehrani and his team, showed his water pressure procedure reduced pain in patients by 90 percent; 30 percent of patients felt no pain at all and 10 percent didn’t notice the difference. While Dr. Tehrani enjoys transforming people's looks and lives he says you have to be careful not to fall down a slippery slope. The key to looking young forever is to be realistic and natural. Some patients “want their neck to be so tight, but its not realistic,” he explained. “Age gracefully. The secret to looking natural forever is to not overdo it. Start with nonsurgical procedures,” Dr. Tehrani said. “Instead of turning 50 and doing a facelift, do nonsurgical smaller injections, hold a surgical skin lift procedure off by 10 years and now about 60 years old you do it, instead of having to redo it,” he said.

First Long Island Investors Making Smart Financial Decisions for You
T
By Sara Barry
he dedicated team at First Long Island Investors, a Jerichobased wealth management firm, gives affluent investors’ confidence and security when making financial decisions. Since the firm was founded over 30 years ago by Robert D. Rosenthal and Ralph F. Palleschi, the principals have always invested side-by-side with their clients. With their belief that trust is the “foundation of all meaningful relationships,” and by developing an individualized investment approach for each client, the firm has enjoyed a loyal customer base for decades. Their strong service ethic and tailored approach provides every client with the resources, expertise, investment guidance and confidence necessary to achieve a lifetime of wealth. 104 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
The firm’s process begins with an analysis of a client’s holdings and an understanding of his or her goals. From there, the team develops customized programs and plans of action regarding the client’s investment plan. These uncertain financial times constantly prove difficult, and the team at First Long Island provides every client with the tools necessary to lessen the uncertainty. The firm builds a prudent asset allocation for clients designed to participate in market appreciation while protecting capital. Though we have seen the Brexit and geopolitical terrorist threats frighten many investors, First Long Island’s team has remained unshaken by both of these situations. The firm reviews every clients’ asset allocation on a quarterly basis to check that it is appropriate based on the individual’s goals and investment horizon, also considering the macro economic factors, the overall markets and company valuations.
Rosenthal and Palleschi weighed in on the financial status of the US and predicted what is to come in the market. Finance is in a conflicted place, as the S&P 500, the Dow and NASDAQ have recently all hit new highs. We are in unchartered waters in terms of market highs which, as Rosenthal believes, are being driven by earnings growth and low interest rates. The upcoming election, frustration with the paralysis in Washington, and geopolitical threats have left many investors feeling uneasy in these times of “financial repression, as Rosenthal says, and rightfully so. In terms of market sustainability, the firm expects interest rates to stay low, and the markets to make modest gains over the longer term. However, the upcoming election and the direction of the Federal Reserve may increase volatility in the short term. The current GDP growth, around 1%, is not helpful, and should be higher. If financial conditions are to improve, then Washington needs to pass pro-growth initiatives such as repatriation of cash held overseas by US companies, as well as a lower tax on the repatriation than under current law to improve infrastructure. If we are to see any improvement, then any legislation passed should be wary of increasing our nearly $20 trillion debt. What should comfort us in these financial times, Rosenthal and Palleschi say, is that recently the Federal Reserve released the results of its supervisory stress test of the major banks, which tests the banks under hypothetical economic and financial market conditions, and almost all banks passed with
flying colors. The FLI Investment Committee does not predict a recession in the near future. What they did predict, about a year ago, was greater volatility in the market, and indeed the markets went down about 11% to 12%, recovered and then went down again. Because of this prediction, FLI’s clients were prepared and did not make knee-jerk decisions. The team at First Long Island uses several categories to put together an asset allocation for a client. The categories are as follows: security investments, defensive equities, traditional equities and real estate/private equity. By using this particular matrix, the team customizes asset allocations so that clients are put in a place where their net worth is expected to appreciate while preserving capital. Another strategy used by the firm, helpful in these volatile times, is investment in companies that pay an above average dividend and grow their dividend each year. This defensive strategy provides a strong dividend yield and the companies in the strategy are expected to continue to pay a cash dividend and grow that cash dividend, generating an income stream for clients. By placing an emphasis on investing side-by-side with their clients, and using conservative investment strategies, the team at FLI helps clients commit their capital to reasonable strategies and prepare for changes in the market both emotionally and financially. fliinvestors.com September 2016 | 105

Jason Crosby Long Island’s Multi-Instrumentalist Transplant to Mill Valley, California By Olivia Everett | Photos by Jay Blakesberg
T
here is no shortage of talented musicians born and raised on Long Island, and Jason Crosby, who grew up in Roslyn and Glen Cove in Nassau County, is no exception.
Classically trained, multi instrumentalist, Crosby, who has lived in Marin County in California for the past three years, has shared the stage with many of the biggest names in the music business, including The Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Carlos Santana, Pete Seeger, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, in many genres of music, from blues and gospel with Susan Tedeschi Band, Robert Randolph and the Family band, Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and the Blind Boys of Alabama, to folk music with Pete Seeger at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival, and Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in 2009, and funk at the 2004 Grammy Awards with P Funk, Outkast, and Earth, Wind and Fire. In fact, Jason was asked a few years ago how he keeps the many styles of music in his head, and can switch seamlessly from one to the other, and he said it was compartmentalized, and joked that it is “like the Dewey Decimal System, only it is the Doobie Decibel System,” and so that is how the name of his band with Roger McNamee came about. 106 | 25A | Metropolitan Manhattan
At two years old he was showing signs of musical interest and was started with the Suzuki violin method shortly before his third birthday. By age four he could play all the music in his Suzuki book by ear, on the violin and piano. Both his two older brothers, Darryl and Brett, played trumpet, so when Jason’s family moved to Glen Cove when he was nine, he started to play trumpet, as there were no strings in the schools program at that time. Over his years in middle school and high school he was also given the French Horn and Baritone Horn to learn, as he has perfect pitch, and could pretty much pick up any instrument. He also now plays guitar, bass, banjo, theramin and harmonium. Jason continued his classical piano lessons with Tanya Lechtman in Sea Cliff, who had studied at the Moscow Conservatory, and at the time only taught Russian children, as she had limited English, but Jason’s abilities won her over and they communicated through the music. She remained his teacher until he was seventeen. His last violin teacher was, Oscar Ravina, a principal violinist with the New York Philharmonic. By age twelve Jason Crosby was winning classical music competitions on both piano and violin.
His older brother Darryl, had been part of the Long Island Youth Orchestra, and had toured all over the world during his high school summers. So Jason auditioned for LIYO at age eleven, and was told that although he played well, he was very young, it was a high school orchestra after all, and the Director Martin Dreiwitz, said he didn’t need any more violinists, he needed violists. So what did Jason do? He strung his violin to a viola and taught himself to read music in a new clef and auditioned again that same year , becoming the youngest member, and finally becoming principal violist, touring the world with the youth orchestra for four consecutive summers. He was there with LIYO in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down, and was in Cuba before any other American groups were allowed to visit. This classical background and innate understanding of music, made him able to play many genres of music. So when his older brother Brett, who was a Grateful Dead fan, a Deadhead, introduced him to Solar Circus, a New Jersey based Dead cover band, and they heard Jason play keyboards, he became part of the band. As a senior in high school he was working a part time job as organist at a local church and was offered a contract, but he turned it down to go on the road with Solar Circus after graduation.
McCartney and Ringo Star, were there in the audience with their wives, and families of George Harrison and John Lennon. Jason's mom, Victoria Crosby, was there with members of her family who still live in England, and as she grew up near Liverpool had seen The Beatles perform in the early years. "My life had come full circle from watching the Beatles to watching them watching my son!" said his mother. (See the Victoria Crosby's article in the April/May 2015 issue of 25A Magazine, Elvis, The Beatles and Me.) In more recent years Crosby has been performing in Shana Morrison’s band, and has toured opening for her father, Sir Van Morrison, who was recently knighted by Queen Elizabeth ll. Crosby has produced and performed on other musicians’ CDs, several of them Grammy nominated, as well as his own CDs, as a guitarist and singer songwriter, performing on violin, trumpet and keyboards, Out of The Box, followed by Four Notes and Seven Chords Ago, and Words in Glass, which garnered rave reviews from both Relix and Modern Drummer Magazines.
While playing keyboards with Solar Circus in New Jersey at the Metro Lounge, Bruce Springsteen sat in with the band and jammed as Crosby and Springsteen traded licks. This topic came up recently between Bruce and Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show.
His early gigs in Marin County were with Bob Weir on his Internet show Weir Here, at TRI Studios and Sweetwater Music Hall, followed by tours with Phil Lesh and Friends, and gigs at Lesh’s club Terrapin Crossroads. Jason Crosby is in the process of recording a new CD on Blue Rose Music, produced by Karl Derfler who produced for Tom Waitts and Dave Matthews. The Jason Crosby Band, performs on the East and West coasts, and also feature Chris Crosby, his younger brother, on bass.
Jason performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, opening for Eric Clapton in 2004 and again in 2008. The 2008 trip also included a tour of Ireland. They played at the Royal Albert Hall for one week, and on the last night the surviving Beatles, Paul
Jason Crosby will be on the East Coast this fall with Phil and Friends at the Coney Island Amphitheater and The Capitol Theater, as well as other shows with Jackie Greene, John Oates, The Terrapin Family Band. For tour dates visit jasoncrosby.net September 2016 | 107

John Petrocelli New York's Top Contractor
J
By W.A. Muller
ohn Petrocelli of Petrocelli construction is living proof of the old saying necessity is the mother of invention. Growing up in Hoboken, New Jersey, Petrocelli, 57 – the second oldest of nine children – began doing construction practically from the day he could walk. His father Clement, now 86, owned an electrical contracting business so he was educated about the intricacies of wiring by default. But the real catalyst was growing in such a large family, which necessitated more rooms every time there was another child. “Whenever my parents had another kid, we had to build more room,” he says. “I’m not kidding when I tell you that I started helping my dad out when I seven and we got tools instead of toys.” Not long after that – and throughout his teenage years – he had a contracting company with his older brother that his father had set up for them. “I had a business cards made up, and I went around to all my neighbors and I started working doing odd jobs and whatever else they needed. I was always the salesman of the group.” But after graduating from high school in St. Joseph and taking business courses at Jersey City State College, Petrocelli took a giant leap of faith and decided to strike out on his own. To generate leads, he reached out to local real estate brokers in the yellow pages and sent letters. “I thought they would be my best source for finding referrals because they always have their pulse on things.” To his surprise, not only did he get several calls back, he soon got his first job. “I’ll never forget this guy. Bedrosian was his name. He asked me when I could be done and when I could start, so I told him I could start now and that

I could be done tomorrow. I said, ‘I’ll work through the night and I’ll finish it for you.’ And that’s what I did. I went in there, I worked through the night and when he came in the next morning it was done.” Meanwhile, Petrocelli’s efficiency immediately led to a referral. This time, it was to a textile company in Carney, New Jersey who wanted him to renovate their offices. Once again, he did it in twenty-four hours. He hasn’t looked back since. Over the past 36 years, JPC has headed up high-profile projects at some of New York’s most prestigious buildings – among them 907 Fifth Avenue where the reclusive copper heiress Hugette Clark lived where he divided the lavish apartment into three separate ones, and more recently the penthouse of shoe magnate Steve Madden’s ex-wife Wendy at Trump Place where he renovated and re-designed the entire apartment As of 2016, Petrocelli says that he’s working on more than 20 design and construction projects throughout New York City and the tristate area. Among his favorites is a project at 993 Fifth Avenue where he’s adding a recreation area and meeting rooms on the ground floor. As he sees it, this is just the tip of the iceberg and no project is too small whether it’s a door that looks like a cabinet, a tunnel that connects between children’s bedrooms or a waterfall in the middle of the apartment. It’s also about the team. “I have great people working for me and there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. It doesn’t matter what the job is, we can do it,” he says. petrocelliinc.com
