Consuming Collagen BY LIND SAY BRU STEIN ROSEN, MS, RD , CD N

I

t m a y s o u n d c r a z y, b u t a d d i n g powdered connective tissue from cows and fish to your morning coffee, smoothies, or oatmeal is the latest trend among the clean-eating crowd. Collagen powder (typically deriving from grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine hides or wild-caught snapper) is loaded with protein and is said to soothe achy joints, improve gut health, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. You may be thinking “how?” and “what is collagen anyway?” Let me explain… What is collagen Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body; it accounts for one-third of the protein in our bodies and 70% of the protein in our skin. It is part of the connective tissue for bones, muscles, blood cells, cartilage, and organs. As we age, our natural production of collagen decreases. Consuming collagen from animal or fish sources may help offset some of that collagen loss that we are experiencing. When we consume collagen powder, our digestive systems break down the proteins into amino acids, which, in turn, are used as building blocks that support collagen production throughout the body. Benefits of collagen 1. Supplementing with collagen improves bone strength by stimulating new bone growth to replace old and damaged

cells 2. Collagen is crucial for proper digestive f u n c t i o n s a n d c a n h e l p p re v e n t heartburn and ulcers 3. Collagen supplementation helps to repair gastrointestinal lining, helping to heal irritable bowel syndrome and leaky gut 4. Collagen supplementation helps to strengthen the dermis layer of our skin and therefore smoothens cellulite and hides stretch marks and acne scars 5. Collagen is rich in the amino acids lysine and arginine, making it suitable for post-workout nutrition 6. Supplementing with collagen improves mobility and flexibility How to use collagen Collagen dissolves or blends extremely well in both hot and cold beverages. My favorite way to enjoy collagen powder is in my morning coffee or smoothie. When I add it to my coffee, I like the fact that it adds nearly 10 grams of protein to an otherwise protein-deficient drink. Protein Frappuccino: Ingredients: • ¾ cup organic Cold Brew coffee • ¼ milk of choice (I like unsweetened almond milk) • 1 serving of collagen powder • 8-10 ice cubes

Optional: ground cinnamon or stevia to taste Directions: Add all ingredients to a highspeed blender and pulse until incorporated. In addition adding collagen powder to beverages, this supplement is extremely versatile and can be added to various baked goods without changing their flavor! Grain-free Collagen and Chia Banana Muffins: Ingredients: • 1 ripe banana, mashed • 1 egg • ¼ cup natural almond butter • ½ cup almond flour • 1 serving of collagen powder • 1 Tbsp chia seeds • ½ tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp cinnamon Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. Mix wet ingredients in a large bowl. Set aside. 3. Mix dry ingredients in another bowl. Add dry to wet and mix through. 4. Pour mixture into well-greased muffin tins and bake for ~13 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Bloat Busters BUST BLOAT NATURALLY

I

t’s officially summertime. That means more time spent outside in the sun with family and friends. That also means less clothing. Whether you are in the best shape of your life, or looking to drop a few pounds, there is nothing more uncomfortable or frustrating than being bloated. Even those who work out regularly and eat a well-balanced diet may struggle from bloating. However, by ingesting the right foods and avoiding those that induce bloat, you will be feeling better and appearing lighter in no time!

My top 4 tips for avoiding bloat: Don’t eat too quickly. Eating too quickly and not thoroughly chewing your food can cause you to swallow air, which leads to bloating. Your meals should last at least 20 minutes. Because digestion begins in the mouth, you can decrease bloating just by simply chewing your food more.

BY L I NDSAY B RU STEIN ROS EN , M S , RD, C D N may be individualized as well. Recording your daily intake and noting how bloated you feel is a great way to pinpoint whether certain foods or beverages are triggers for you individually. It is always best to consult with a physician or registered dietitian for more guidance as well.

6 foods to introduce into your diet: Kefir

This food is rich in potassium, a mineral that plays a role in regulating fluid balance. Potassium-rich foods help counteract the effects of sodium, therefore reducing bloat.

Asparagus Asparagus is often referred to as the “anti-bloating superfood.” Ultimately, it helps you urinate, flushing out excess water and in turn relieving any discomfort and bloat. It also contains prebiotics, which help support the growth of “good” bacteria in the gut. This helps to maintain a healthy balance in your digestive system to prevent and/or reduce flatulence.

Keep a food journal. Although there are some common culprits, bloating

Papain, the enzyme contained in papaya, helps break down proteins in your gastrointestinal system, easing up the digestive process. Also, this tropical fruit has anti-inflammatory properties along with a high fiber content that support a strong digestive tract.

Avocados

The fizz in carbonated drinks can cause gas to get trapped in your belly. Opt for water with lemon, lime, mint, or cucumber to amp up the flavor without added calories or sugar. Eating high-sodium foods can trigger water retention, which can make you appear more “puffy.” Avoiding sodium isn’t as easy as steering clear of the saltshaker, however. Sodium sneaks its way into most processed and packaged foods (think soups, breads, crackers, and the like), making it very difficult to avoid. When and if you do succumb to salt, increase your water intake to help flush it out.

Papaya

Probiotic bacteria found in kefir or yogurt help with the digestive process and fight off inflammation. Kefir is easy to tolerate by those sensitive to dairy. Opt for plain or unsweetened versions and sweeten it naturally with fruit.

Limit carbonated beverages.

Avoid salty foods.

gastrointestinal muscles, therefore dissipating the gas that causes your stomach to bloat. Chamomile has also been said to soothe and relax, which can help ease any sort of stomach discomfort.

Fennel Fennel is rich in potassium, helping to reduce post-meal digestive spasms. The seeds found in this plant contain compounds (anethole, fenchone and estragole) that relax the GI tract, allowing gas to pass and ultimately relieving bloating.

Peppermint or chamomile tea Both of these teas have been found to relax

sToNY BrooK A New Space for a New Chapter By Jody Sokol

O

ur client always loved driving past the 1941 colonial revival in historic Stony Brook Village, so it was a dream come true when she and her husband finally had the opportunity to buy it. Of course, after moving in, they knew that a lot of work needed to be done. A hideous green carpet covered the bedroom and office floors, while contrasting floral and burgundy striped drapes hung in the windows. After a year of living in the new home, they decided it was time for a fresh start. The bedroom went from drab to fab. Gray grasscloth wallpaper went up over stark white walls. The custom-made bedding was pet-friendly and passed all the cats’ tests. Swivel chairs with textural fabric and soft colors and a faux crocodile leather ottoman provide the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee. The beautiful rope texture on the mirror adds a nice touch, while the black dresser with leather handles grounds the room. Rattan shades give the windows new life with their warm texture, and the embroidered linen drapes are now the focal point. Once the bedroom was complete, we needed to tackle the adjoining office. Because the rooms connect, the elements in the rooms needed to work together. A soft gray carpet flows throughout the space. Our clients were looking for a way to share the office; he needed room to spread

out his paperwork while she needed space for working on her laptop, so his and hers desks with complimenting styles were added. We designed a custom desk to accommodate his needs and brought in a shagreen leather desk for her. Everyone loved the design on the roman shades so much that it became the focal point in the office. A lucite cart with rattan baskets and some fun starburst accessories brighten up the room. While we were in the midst of this project, our client quit her job to convert her new home into New York’s first Bed & Bike Inn, a bed and breakfast geared toward cyclists. The Stony Brookside is in the perfect location, across the street from the gorgeous Mill Pond Park, backing up to the historic Grist Mill, and just down the road from the Village Center.

Matty Sorrentino & Christopher Tsarsi BY AD AM KLU GER

G

etting legendary restaurant maven Matty Sorrentino on the phone is no easy feat. Sorrentino splits what time he does have between his life’s passions- his family, the restaurant business and his personal involvement in numerous charities like Safe Center for battered women and the Guardian Brain Foundation. Matty’s brother Andrew passed from a brain tumor several years ago. “You’ve got to give back and be thankful and grateful,” says Sorrentino, who says his charity work keeps him grounded and focused on what really matters in life,” these are the people that help us we don’t help them they help us.” Helping restaurants survive tough times and grow is the key to Sorrentino’s work as one of the world’s most sought-after restaurant consultants. The roster of critically acclaimed dining establishments he consults for include the extremely successful 388 Restaurant & Lounge in Roslyn, it’s sister restaurant Chris & Tony’s Restaurant & Lounge in Syosset, Ciro’s

26 | MetMatNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

in Kings Park among many others. “Social media is big...but Facebook and Instagram don’t grow your business...it creates awareness of your business.” In the restaurant trade, Sorrentino favors old school values over technology when it comes to winning over customers. “Social media is a valuable tool but the first day you open your business is the most important day of your life--even if you have three people come in that day --make them go out happy because they will tell three they will tell six they will tell nine they will tell eighteen...your most important day is your first day in business...you got to make sure that is right.” And when things are going wrong with a restaurant, that’s when Sorrentino steps in to work his magic as a consultant. “It’s very important to listen to people that work--to see what their opinions are... you can’t just say I’m the boss you’re the worker-- no, no, no listen to what people have to say --they will fasttrack telling you about the problems --if five waiters tell you we have a problem with the pepper mills sure enough we have a problem with the pepper mills or maybe the manager

is nasty, you know it’s going to happen--they are going to tell you and then you’ll evaluate.” A fail-safe business tip for any restaurant? “Running any business is tough ...but the best marketing is in-house marketing --give something back...give an after-dinner drink, give cookies and food--besides the kindness and the service and the food --give a little something extra...”it’s just giving back- instead of spending $1000 a week in advertisements --give a thousand dollars of the product to the customer to come back--you know- give it to them. That’s the deal.” That’s just one example of why the Sorrentino name has been synonymous with fine dining and high powered clientele for decades. “treat people how you want to be treated when you go out. You get good food you get good service treat them nice and that’s it... there’s no secret to that just treat people nice...the food talks for itself. “ “ I worry about people - I worry about the service I want everybody to have a good time when they leave those restaurants -- they have to say wow this is a great experience.” Matty learned the ins and outs of the

restaurant trade as a teenager when he started working in the world famous kitchen of Don Peppe- a century old eatery in Queens. “I started working there when I was 15... that was the experience of my life.....the best experience of my life...starting there...learned so much- that’s where I learned a lot of what I know it was the best thing that ever happened to me I dropped out of high-school and i went to work washing dishes at 15 years old ...and I’m still washing dishes.” (laughs) And sharing his knowledge of the industry he loves. Joining the family tradition at Roslyn’s 388 Restaurant & Lounge, is co-owner and head chef Salvatore Sorrentino--named after his beloved Grandfather. “My son- he’s following in his grandfather’s footsteps --taking it to the next level. He runs the kitchen he’s the chef. he loves the kitchen, loves food, loves to create.” Co-owner Chris Tarsi, has helped the Sorrentinos tur ned 388 Restaurant & Lounge into a popular fixture on the Gold Coast’s culinary scene, offering up home-

style Northern and Southern Italian cuisine with such delectable dishes as the Shrimp Oreganata appetizer to the full-sized entrees like Linguine Marechiara and Chicken Scarpiello. Thanks to sublime ambience and an unparalleled menu, the 388 Restaurant & Lounge is redefining family style elegance. Ask Matty his favorite meal. That’s easy: The Zucchini Linguini Alexia -- named after his daughter. As for future goals... “I’m going to open myself up to more consulting and more restaurants open more restaurants ...little smaller units but in areas like Roslyn and north shore area and the gold coast area, Manhattan, Greenwich Ct.” “We’re going to start bringing little units --we’ll cut down the menu a little cut down the size of the restaurant -smaller maybe 100 seat units, 80 seat units --they’ll be manageable and go to the areas that don’t have what we give.” According to Sorrentino, when it comes to opening any sort of restaurant--there are three things to remember- location, location, location. “What I would tell everybody is to

put your business where there aren’t the same sort of businesses --if you are in the pizzeria business don’t go into an area where there’s 20 pizzerias-- look for where there’s a need and that’s where you go.” As the conversation comes to a close, Restaurant guru Matty Sorrentino shares a couple last tidbits before he has to get back to work. He says what makes him most proud is being a father to four children and of having a good reputation in a tough business, “because I work hard, I really work hard to service people.” And for restaurant owners--Matty offers one last tip--don’t be afraid to take some risks with the menu every once in a while. “people are going to come for your food. so you’ve got to have good food, good service, nice clean place- clean is very big --change it up every once and a while -- you go to the same restaurant and you eat the Veal Parmesan all the time --after a couple years you’re going to say what the hell am I eating?-- you’ve got to have diversification--that makes you special.”

Making her official Off Broadway debut benefitting the Oscar Hammerstein II Museum & Theatre Education Center, Billboard charting TOP 100 recording artist, Doreen Taylor raises the bar headlining the new docu-musical, “An Enchanted Evening: A Night with Oscar Hammerstein II” running December 8, 2017 to December 17, 2017 at the 777 Theatre at the Roy Arias Theater Center- 777 8th Ave. (Between 47th & 48th). Special guest performance by Broadway’s Davis Gaines. Tickets on sale at hammersteinlive.com. Proceeds will be donated to help save Highland Farm in Doylestown, PA.

After receiving critical acclaim in its Philadelphia debut, this cutting edge, 90-minute “docu-musical” highlights Oscar’s evolution to become one of the most important lyricists of all time. Possessing a rare opportunity to work closely with William Hammerstein (Oscar Hammerstein’s grandson) to obtain private, personal stories, rarely before seen images and videos, and an in-depth glimpse into the life of Oscar Hammerstein, “An Enchanted Evening” is a one-of-a kind, intimate show highlighting Oscar’s life and music through documentary story-telling and imaginative performances. Will Hammerstein has proudly embraced

this new production and is thrilled at the docu-musical’s success of highlighting the honorable values and principles of which his grandfather embodied. “Doreen’s talent and personal values make her a perfect torchbearer for this exemplary legacy [Oscar Hammerstein II]. I’m sure Oscar would be very pleased with the association.” Being able to retur n to her musical theatre roots in her home state of NY while supporting a cause that helps save a historic Broadway landmark makes this evening an extra special achievement for Doreen. “I grew up performing in the great shows that Oscar Hammerstein II helped create and to think that the very place these shows were conceived is now being threatened is a travesty. I created this show from a very special place in my heart and as a labor of love. I revere Oscar and will always be grateful for forever changing the landscape of musical theatre history and being able to help save this legendary landmark is a great honor for me.” Oscar Hammerstein II moved to Highland Farm in Doylestown, PA in 1940 and over the next 19 years, the farm became the birthplace for timeless Rodgers and Hammerstein classics, including: Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Carousel, King and I, and Sound of Music. He also mentored a young Stephen Sondheim there, who famously said, “In one afternoon at Highland Farm, I lear ned more about songwriting and musical theatre, than most people learn in a lifetime.” Shortly after Oscar’s passing in 1960, the Hammerstein’s sold the farm and is now being threatened by a 4 lot subdivision. The Oscar Hammerstein II Museum & Theatre Education Center will not only help save the farm and what most consider “the birthplace of American modern musical theater”, but also restore the house for tours, a museum and to build a new theatre, where the Hammerstein legacy of great musical theatre, social engagement and mentorship can be honored. For more information, visit hammersteincenter.org. DOREEN TAYLOR is a multiple award winning singer/songwriter and has been dubbed “an excellent performing artist to keep your eyes on” by the Huffington Post and The Philadelphia Inquirer raved that “Taylor’s enthusiasm, personality and musicality are engaging.” Doreen was also named one of the hottest up and coming artists by countless publications and television outlets like the Lifetime Network,

CBS, NBC, FOX News, CW Network, Ok!TV, Consumers Digest, etc. W ith 2 degrees in voice and opera performance, Taylor has played numerous leading roles in various musical theater and operatic productions across the country; including the Philadelphia Scottish Opera premiere as Cunegonde in “Candide” where she received rave reviews from multiple publications and critics. First Long Island Investors ROBERT D. ROSENTHAL & RALPH F. PALLESCHI

T

he dedicated team at First Long Island Investors, a Jerichobased wealth management firm, with their deep and broad base of knowledge, strives to make each client feel confident and secure in the knowledge that their money (and overall financial life) is wellmanaged. Since the firm was founded over 30 years ago by Robert D. Rosenthal and Ralph F. Palleschi, the principals have always invested side-by-side with their clients. With their belief that trust is the “foundation of all meaningful relationships,” and by developing an individualized investment approach for each client, the firm has enjoyed a loyal client base for decades. Their strong service ethic and tailored approach provides every client with the resources, expertise, investment guidance and confidence necessary to achieve a lifetime of wealth. The firm’s process begins with an analysis of a client’s holdings and an understanding of his or her goals. From there, the team develops customized programs and plans of action regarding the client’s investment plan. The firm builds a prudent asset allocation for clients designed to participate in market appreciation while protecting capital. The firm reviews every clients’ asset allocation on a quarterly basis to check that it is appropriate based on the individual’s goals and investment horizon, also considering the macro economic factors, the overall markets and company valuations. Because so many firms offering similar services, FLI is continually finding ways to differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack. One of the ways they do so, is by providing an extremely high level of service and always working to give the best to their clients. Even though 2017 has been a great year so far, they are determined to not “rest on their laurels.” The metrics by which they want to be scored, are not just based on performance, but also trust and service. This is how they maintain decades-long relationships. With that in mind, they are rolling out new initiatives. New for this year, is a “wealth-

30 | MetMatNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

management hotline,” for their clients. With things like cyber-attacks and hacking a constant threat, which can happen afterhours or on a weekend, in order to better serve their clients, they established an emergency hotline. For example, they had a New York City based client, who was hacked on a weekend. She was concerned that her assets were in jeopardy. The firm took decisive action to ensure that everything was in order (and thankfully it was). This gave the client great comfort; “we want our clients to rely on us whenever they need us.” In addition, twice a year they offer a breakfast seminar for their clients. Offering thought leadership, they cover all different topics that can and do affect the investment landscape, even if it’s not directly related to investment strategies. For example, their most recent breakfast speaker was a former CIA analyst who now works for a non-profit dedicated to studying the issue of terrorism and its proliferation through online and social media channels. This level of service is quite unique and really sets the firm apart from their competitors. Rosenthal and Palleschi also weighed in on the financial status of the US and shared their expectations of what is to come in the markets. Since Trump’s election the S&P 500, Dow and NASDAQ have continually hit new highs and we are in unchartered waters in terms of market highs which, as Rosenthal believes, are being driven by ear nings growth and low interest rates. In terms of market sustainability, the firm expects interest rates to stay relatively low, and the markets to make gains over the longer term. The firm believes that Washington needs to pass pro-growth initiatives such as repatriation of cash held overseas by US companies, as well as a lower tax on the repatriation than under current law. The tax proceeds can then be used to improve infrastructure. In addition, they would like to see tax cuts, especially for the middle class and businesses. Rosenthal shared his view, “if we are to see real economic improvement , any legislation passed should be wary of increasing our over $20 trillion debt,” Thankfully, the FLI Investment

Committee does not predict a recession in the near future and keeps a watchful eye on the economic indicators so that they are prepared when it does happen. The team at First Long Island uses several categories to put together an asset allocation for a client. The categories are: security investments, defensive equities, traditional equities and real estate/private equity. By using this particular matrix, the team customizes asset allocations so that clients are put in a place where their net worth is expected to appreciate while preserving capital. One example of a strategy used by

the firm, helpful in these uncertain times, is investment in companies that pay an aboveaverage dividend and grow their dividend each year. This defensive strategy provides a strong dividend yield and the companies in the strategy are expected to continue to pay a cash dividend and grow that cash dividend, generating an income stream for clients. By placing an emphasis on investing side-by-side with their clients, and using prudent and diversified investment strategies, the team at FLI helps clients commit their capital to sound strategies and prepare for changes in the market both

emotionally and financially. In addition to asset management services, the team at First Long Island Investors strives to ease the burden of wealth administration for their clients. They take the time to develop a comprehensive understanding of each client’s total wealth goals and become a part of their team of advisors providing guidance on things such as estate planning, taxation counsel, philanthropic advisory, family wealth planning, and wealth transfer. Finding someone you trust to wisely manage your money is a complex task riddled with frustration and anxiety. With

a committed and passionate team schooled in the essentials of wealth management and focused on providing exceptional service, First Long Island Investors is redefining financial responsibility. Art Basel’s Isabelle Bscher GALERIE GMURZYNSKA BY JOE ALEXAND ER

l a m o ro u s g a l l e r i s t I s a b e l l e Bscher will be orchestrating her family’s booth at Miami’s Art Basel from (the private day starts December 6th) December 7th to 10th, where she will also host a party for artists and collectors during the fair on December 6th with Jean Pigozzi. Bscher is planning something special at her Galerie Gmurzynska saying “we always try to surprise people, to do something different, something interesting.” This year Galerie Gmurzynska will present Jean Pigozzi’s new dog series, Charles and Saatchi, at Art Basel. This is the second show that Isabelle has done with Pigozzi and they are set to publish a book about the series together with Damiani and text written by Charles Saatchi. The new photo exhibition dedicated to the pups will be complemented by master works from Yves Klein, Roberto Matta, Robert Indiana and Joan Miro. Highlighted works at the booth include Yves Klein IKB 240 from 1995, Fernand Leger’s Composition à la feuille from 1931 and Miro’s Femme aux 3 cheveux, constellation from 1976. Isabelle always melds modern works with new ones at Basel to create a more dynamic booth. Woman-owned art world powerhouse Bscher, an art historian with a master’s

The family built it into an art world powerhouse, representing Picasso, Donald Judd, Robert Indiana and James Turrell, as well as architects Zaha Hadid and Richard Meier, actor/painter Sylvester Stallone, and designer/photographer Karl Lagerfeld. Art Expo Chicago Isabelle showed the work of her friend Christo at the Galerie Gmurzynska booth during the recent EXPO Chicago art fair where she also presented rare pieces by Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. These artists were each selected because they each have a strong connection to the Windy City. Miró had to struggle to find the funding to erect his now-iconic sculpture, “Miró’s Chicago” in the Loop back in 1981. A 1931 Léger piece that Bscher showed is significant because that year marked the artist’s first trip to America, including Chicago. “And Christo famously wrapped Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969. A sensory experience Antonio Monfreda, who has created exhibitions for Valentino and Fendi, and was creative consultant for the Metropolitan

Museum’s AngloMania exhibit, designed Galerie Gmurzynska’s Chicago booth. “He thinks looking at art is something very intimate, so he wanted to create something that involves all senses,” says Bscher. He created curtains using special fabrics, with custom scents from Santa Maria Novella for a fully sensory experience with the master works. ABOUT Galerie Gmurzynska: Galerie Gmurzynska is an international art gallery with locations in Zurich, Zug and St. Moritz, Switzerland, that specializes in modern and contemporary art as well as Russian avant-garde. Art is Life DIANNE BERNHARD BY NICOLE CLARKE

T

his fall Dianne B. Bernhard, a past President of the National Arts Club, will receive the “Patron of Pastels” Award from the Pastel Society of America for her work supporting young pastel artists. The Society’s 45th Annual exhibition dubbed Enduring Brilliance will open at the National Arts Club on September 5th and run through October 1st. The show will feature 175 artists from 10 countries. During the Hall of Fame ceremony, they will give out $40,000 in prize money to the wining artists. Dianne, who will host a party in honor of the Society’s President. Jimmy Wright on the opening night, lives art in the tradition of Robert Henri, an American painter whose philosophy was that art can be a powerful voice for impacting anything. Art is life, and life is art: they can be one in the same providing a joyous experience of the universe. The Patron Angel of Pastels Dianne is an accomplished painter, teacher, arts advocate and devoted patron. Her background as an art educator led her to develop deep insights into the needs of artists and inspired her to establish the Art Spirit Foundation, an institution committed

to the work of living artists. Dianne knows the importance that competitions play in developing a successful career. Juried exhibitions allow artists to show their work for the prospect of recognition and monetary rewards. She entered many of these contests throughout her own career, but as her work with the pastel movement continued, as a priority she discovered that none of the major art competitions in America had a category dedicated to pastels. Knowing that her commitment to the renaissance of the medium would never have an impact if she didn’t do something to transform the way the art world perceived pastel, she contacted many of the most important organizations that juried such competitions and asked, “Why is there no category for pastel?” She learned that often pastel was relegated to a subcategory as if it were inferior to oil or watercolor. She quickly went to work to change this misconception and created a category just for pastels matching the amounts awarded to selected artists in the more traditionally accepted arenas of painting.

Foundation has been leading advocacy for the medium of pastels through monetary a w a rd s i n n a t i o n a l a n d i n t e r n a t i o n a l competitions and patronage of pastel artists. She hopes emerging young artists will take advantage of these opportunities to develop outstanding professional credentials to forward their careers. Dianne recently served as the Director of Fine Arts at The National Arts Club and currently serves as the First Vice President of The Pastel Society of America. Dianne received formal training in art history and business at University of Houston and Yale University, in addition to Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design. She currently resides in Connecticut and New York, where she continues her commitment to promote the arts and create platforms for pastel art and artists of all mediums. Through Art Spirit’s programs, monetary awards, medals, publishing, and films, Dianne continues to advocate the arts, nurture the renaissance of the pastel medium, as well as create awareness that the rewards of great art should be attained during the life of the artist.

Marc Dennis HYPER-REALISTIC DREAMS BY MARC D ENNIS

M

arc Dennis is an American artist known for his hyper-realistic paintings that celebrate the subversive potential of beauty and explore the charged subjects of identity, pleasure and decadence. Interested in transformative possibilities Dennis merges various movements throughout the western art historical canon with modern tropes in order to create clever, provocative and symbolic contemporary paintings that play on our psychological, cultural and spiritual relationships. Influenced by Southern European figurative masters such as Caravaggio, Velasquez, and Manet, and Northern European still-life masters, such as Ambrosius Bosschaert, Jan Davidsz de Heem, and Rachel Ruysch, Dennis introduces us to an alternate reality rich with hype, narrative and humor where art, history, nature and pop culture intersect. Artvoices Magazine informs us that, “Dennis is nothing if not frank and gregarious. He is a dead-ringer for Johnny Depp, a brusque, fast-talking sports fan raised outside of Boston, now based in Brooklyn, whose body of work has become one of contemporary art’s most recognizable signatures.” Born in Danvers, Massachusetts in 1971, Dennis was one of five sons. He received his B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art of Temple

University in Philadelphia, PA and his M.F.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife, Rebecca, a full-time arts therapist and a maker of haute couture women’s fashion by night live with their two young children in Williamsburg. Marc’s studio is located in the posh hamlet of Dumbo, nestled between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges is certainly an inspirational place of artistic creativity. Each wall is lined with canvases in different stages of completion, filled with explosions of luscious flowers, like classic still lifes on steroids. Dennis’ works have been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions in New York, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Houston and Seattle among others. His paintings are in numerous private and public collections, including those of John and Amy Phelan, Glenn and Amanda Fuhrman, Bill and Maria Bell, Beth DeWoody, Larry Gagosian, Larry and Marilyn Fields, David and Jennifer Stockman, Carl and Donna Hessel, Bill Hair, Courtney and Karen Lord, Nancy Rogers, The Neuberger Berman Collection, New York; The Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin; The Springfield Museum of Art, Ohio, and the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California among others. Marc’s works have been reviewed in many publications from The New York

T imes, Art News, W Magazine, Boston Globe, Hyperallergic, Whitehot Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, and T ime Out Magazine. Recently the MTA commissioned Marc Dennis to design all the artwork for the $23.9 Million modernization of Wantagh Station as part of the LIRR Babylon Line. The Decoration & Design Building and the Cohen Design Centers honored 12 of the design industry’s most illustrious talents during the 10th Anniversary Stars of Design and Stars on the Rise Awards. Marc Dennis was awarded the Star of Art Award. Recipients were selected for their contributions to and achievements in their respective fields: Lifetime Achievement, Interior Design, Architecture, Landscape Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Art, Photography and Stars on the Rise. The event was held at the Decoration & Design Building’s restaurant Upper Story by Charlie Palmer on the 14th floor during DDB Fall Market 2017. This invitation-only event saw luminaries from the worlds of interior, landscape, product and graphic design, as well as art, photography and architecture recognizing and honoring their peers in an intimate ceremony. Established at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles more than 20 years ago, the Stars of Design Awards are among the industry’s most prestigious events. marcdennis.com

I

t's a rare thing when you lear n about someone of high intelligence, talent, beauty and abilities who has dedicated their life to making the world a better place for others. It's even more special when you discover that this unique individual has been right there on your TV set all along. Dr. Kelly Powers is a full-time surgeon, who shares medical tips and health advice on Fox News. But there is so much more to her than meets the eye. Along with discussing hard news and medicine, Dr. Kelly has been a regular panelist on the FOX News political satire comedy show, Red Eye. In addition to Fox News, Dr. Kelly Powers is also a regular commentator

on CNN, HLN and NBC. If you see Dr. Kelly on a TV monitor, the first thing you might notice is the Westchester native's All-American good-looks, but after you pump up the volume on her commentary, you'll quickly realize that Dr. Kelly Powers is not just another pretty face or talking head. She is a truly brilliant doctor who is as comfortable discussing complex medical procedures as she is dissecting government policy, politics or breaking news stories. As a member of the media through her well known and respected contributions to FOX News and others, Dr. Powers has a reputation for presenting soft and hard news on medical and health issues of the day. She is becoming the "go-to" person on many health related stories, but is especially known for

articulating political analysis, public policy, and current events. "As a TV commentator, adaptability is the most important thing, says Powers, on TV you want to be charismatic but often the news topics require a stoic delivery... you've got to go with the punches...you have to think on your feet because we are often talking about breaking news. There's just no time to study and learn as much as you'd like so succinct talking points are so important... often I'm taking complex scientific terms and making them relatable." For Dr. Powers, becoming a trusted health and medical resource on TV came naturally. "I learned how to do this for TV audiences just in the way I speak with my

25AMagazine.com | MetMatNy.com | 57

patients every day. Often, it's the doctors who know how to communicate best with their patients that receive the best reviews. It's all about being able to relate with your patients and establishing trust." It also helps to be a bit of extrovert. "I grew up on the stage. I was dancing and performing at four years old and had my first leading role acting at nine years old. Also, in college I was a Division One cheerleader in California." Dr. Powers credits Cheryl Casone, FOX Business/FOX News anchor and Jill Dobson, Entertainment Reporter for Associated Press for helping her become a more polished TV personality," I had the great fortune of working with both these ladies on-air at FOX, both are close friends who have helped me learn the ropes. I surround myself with good girls... Family & friends are extremely important in my life. I am actually an only child, so my close friends ARE my family and siblings." The good doctor has forged a number of high profile friendships in recent years,

more often than not in the course of her never-ending work on behalf of the various health-related charities she is involved with like Plasterhouse https://www. theplasterhouse. org/ , Medgift https:// www.medgift.com/ and RAM https:// ramusa.org/.

Plaster House https://www.theplasterhouse.org/ One of Dr. Powers' passions is creating awareness for a condition known as Skeletal Fluorosis. She holds a Masters of Science in Environmental Science and her interest in this topic/condition arose from her earlier studies and subsequent thesis work. Dr. Powers ended up completing a master's project titled: " Environmental & Medical Management of Skeletal Fluorosis in Easter n Africa" and she presented her work at the American Public Health Association national meeting. This condition is secondary to excessive fluoride exposure, via contaminated ground water or secondary to industrial

practices in niche parts of the world. Endemic in Eastern Africa as it occurs naturally in certain water sources and given rural areas inability to defluoridate or have access to technology or other sources, Skeletal Fluorosis is endemic leading to gross boney deformities of the lower extremity, leading to the inability to walk or walk without pain and peripheral neuropathy occurs often simultaneously. The Plaster House is a home in Arusha that enables children, from all over Tanzania, to recover after they have had corrective orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery or neurosurgery for a disability. Dr Powers plans to visit Plaster House and their affiliate hospital, Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania to volunteer in 2018. Her plan is to perform surgeries on children with Skeletal Fluorosis and Clubfoot and volunteer at Plaster House as part of their post-op recovery.

MedGift is an organization, that has the complete resources and tools for those facing a health-related hardship or need. It works like a bridal or baby shower registry, however instead of gifts the patient requests specific health-related resources, devices, supplement medical goods, etc and others can purchase these specific medical goods instead of say buying a sick individual flowers. Allows the opportunity for people to give the patient what they really need.

RAM - Remote Area Medical https://ramusa.org/ Remote Area Medical's mission is to prevent pain and alleviate suffering. The organization is fueled by donors and volunteers who support the operation of mobile medical clinics that deliver free, high-quality vision, dental, and medical services to children, individuals, and families who do not have access or cannot afford a visit to a doctor. Dr Powers was a medical volunteer with Remote Area Medical (RAM) which provides health care to those in underserved populations in the US, particularly Appalachia. Dr Powers spent time in Tennessee treating patients with various lower extremity pathologies, wounds, and infections. Dr. Kelly says that it was her parents that instilled her with a sense of purpose at a young age. "I grew up in Westchester, New York from humble beginnings, my parents gave me endless encouragement and support my whole life. They stressed academics, hard work, personal responsibility, and above all strong values. From an early age, I was told 1) I can accomplish or be anything I want when I grow up and 2) No one is going to hand it to you. Work hard, keep dreaming, stay positive and goal focused and you can make any dream a reality." Throughout her life Dr. Kelly has pursued excellence wherever it has led her. The result: she holds five different academic

and medical diplomas . "I've lived in five U.S. cities, mostly for school (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, DC, and of course NYC). " Recently Powers was recognized as a "Future 40 Under 40" leader in America in politics and business by Maverick PAC for the year of 2017 where they lauded her medical background: When she is not on TV, Dr. Powers spends her time in the operating room as she is a podiatric surgeon, with an emphasis on diabetes, wound care & sports medicine. Dr. Powers completed a General Surgery Inter nship as part of her Podiatric Surgery Residency at Boston University Medical Center. Empire Diner A REMA D E CLA S S IC BY LU CY FLINN

T

he Empire Diner made its grand revival this past April. Cafeteria Group and Chef/ Proprietor John DeLucie have joined forces to create a space that combines diner classics with elevated and fresh flavors. DeLucie noted, “I’ve always been drawn to nostalgia. I love historic spaces that can be revitalized. I’m thrilled to be working with Cafeteria Group to bring such an iconic New York establishment back to life.” Located in West Chelsea, the Empire Diner appears as any other milkshake and patty-melt joint on the outside, yet it has been transformed into a chic, modernized dining area on the inside. There is both a floor-level seating area and an upstairs dining area that serve as ideal spots for private events for up to twentyfive guests.

66 | MetMatNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

Chef de Cuisine Justin Neubeck presents the diner meals we know and love with unique twists. Neubeck displays appetizers that intrigue his guests. From the macaroni and cheese served with mustard greens and sherry vinaigrette to the celery root soup accompanied by brown butter and crab, the list goes on. As for heartier options offered in Neubeck’s “Main” section, one can choose to feast on Braised Beef Short Rib with horseradish gremolata or even a Sourdough Pretzel Fried Chicken with chili mustard sauce and herbed French fries on the side. While you eat, you have the opportunity to sip on beverages creatively concocted by mixologist Jenny Castillo. Castillo utilizes her appreciation for simple and crisp ingredients to produce drinks that will truly tickle the taste buds. The Empire Diner’s “Mule,”

which combines matcha with notes of mint, lime and ginger, and the “Salty Dog,” which fuses pressed fennel and grapefruit juice, are only a couple among the many updated takes on classic beverages. Overall, the Empire Diner encapsulates a universe where the past and present join forces, and the results are innovative dishes and beverages within a stunning, comfortable space. or one of a variety of different tacos. As far as drinks are concerned, Rosie’s offers traditional options such as wine or beer alongside a variety of tequilas and mezcals. These traditional Mexican alcohols are sure to pair perfectly with the wonderful culinary offerings Rosie’s provides, creating an excellent dining experience that is not to be missed. Compared to Rosie’s, Vida Verde is much more recent, having opened in the middle of July 2017. Despite its newness, Vida Verde has already made a name for itself as an exquisite cocktail bar and restaurant, combining excellent food and enticing drinks to create an enthralling addition to New York City’s nightlife. Vida Verde’s menu was designed by Chef Hugo Orzoco to bring to mind his hometown of Mazatlan, Mexico, and it certainly succeeds at that. W ith items like their tableside guacamole with pico de gallo, serrano peppers, tostadas and charred tortillas, their refreshing watermelon salad, and their tacos consisting of housemade tortillas filled with a variety of different options, Vida Verde provides an authentic taste of Mexican cuisine. Their drinks are equally spectacular,

using fresh ingredients to create signature cocktails like their Old Town Oaxaca with Añejo tequila, mezcal, moscatel, and cane sugar, and their Vida Verde, with snap pea infused mezcal and tarragon among other ingredients. Vida Verde puts as much care into their cocktails as it does their food, providing an invigorating experience. Together, Rosie’s and Vida Verde offer two different viewpoints on Mexican cuisine. Rosie’s offers traditional Mexican favorites in a comfortable and relaxed setting, while Vida Verde offers enhanced dishes in a vibrant and modernized location. Both restaurants are fantastic, and both approaches are equally valid when it comes to Mexican food. The cuisine is a truly rich and flavorful one, and it should be experienced as often as in as many ways as possible to truly get the full effect. So feel free to go to either restaurant, as whichever one you go to, you are sure to get an absolutely marvelous experience. ROSIE’S 29 E 2nd St New York, NY 212.335.0114 rosiesnyc.com

Palm Springs THE WINTER HAMPTONS

T

he desert has always been a place of romanticism, open skies bounded by snow capped mountains, set in ombre colors of mauve. The Coachella Valley looks as if it were the backdrop of an old George Montgomery Western, perhaps that is why he picked this scenic oasis to call his home. He wasn’t the only movie star to do so. Only 100 miles east of Los Angeles, made this the perfect escape for the glittering stars of the golden age of film, who were bounded by their contracts to never be more than a two hour drive from the studios. Palm Springs, known as the “Hideaway of the Stars,” has stayed true to its name. Walk through the wide, palm lined streets of the historic Las Palmas neighborhood and you can stand in front of the black and white regency style home once lived in by Marilyn Monroe. vast constellation of the night sky creating a luxurious indoor/ outdoor experience. The Colony Palms The Hollywood Hideaway • Stay in room 18 • Rent a poolside cabana • Tour the Movie Colony by bike A crackdown on crime in the Midwest saw a mobster influx to the Wild West. Seeing themselves as pioneers they fled to the desert to avoid prying eyes and the law. Visionaries, like Bugsy Siegel saw more than a pile of secluded sand, they say money, and lots of it! As a resort town, Palm Springs had a severe downturn in its economics every year at the end of each season and with the closing of the illustrious playground, El Mirador in 1932, the city was losing its style. Enter a pair of glamour toting, dinner jacket wearing, celebrity friended brothers known as The Wertheimers. Associates of the infamous Purple Gang, a predominantly Jewish mob of bootleggers and hijackers, Al Wertheimer arrived in Palm Springs to capitalize, as any western prospector would. Conveniently situated near the O’Donnell Golf Club (the millionaires playground) is a

discrete colonial facade of white stucco, topped by red Spanish clay tiles, known today as the The Colony Palms. What lay through the entrance of this discreet hotel is a history synonymous with the golden days of Hollywood. Opening its doors as “ The Colonial House” in 1936, Wertheimer’s hotel swiftly became the prefered playground of the silver screen elites, drawn to the property for its opulent accommodations and for its discretion. Prohibition may have ended three years prior but the good times were far from a close. In true mobster fashion Wertherimer installed a basement casino, speakeasy and brothel. Any evening one could catch a glimpse of Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable or Carol Lombard dancing the night away, granted you were among those admitted. Though the days of underground nightlife have long since left the property the elegance has stayed the same. Today the Colony Palms Hotel is a fashionably private hideaway attracting sleek socialites who have come to retreat in the courtyard style grounds of ivy and citrus. Under the mystical sound of cicadas you’ll find, cocktails in hand, lounging poolside in private cabanas the most attractive crowd of cultured individuals in the Coachella Valley.

Simplicity is the key to comfort at the Colony Palms. Plush white lined beds face Spanish fireplaces and spacious bathrooms with clawfoot tubs invite their guest to lounge in soapy suds like Joan Crawford would have. Attention to atmosphere, down to the appearance of the staff, who all look as if they’ve walked out of a Hollywood film themselves make this the “Hollywood Hideaway.” The Purple Palm A pantry without borders • Brunch with the locals • Have a Purple Palm bloody mary The Bloody Mary is a staple of Palm Springs brought here from NYC’s St Regis to the Palm Springs Racquet Club in the 1930’s • Share the 1st course Like the glamorous gangsters of golden age Hollywood, Chef Nick Tall is a visionary in the desert. Cuisine set from local ingredients seem to appear like a plated oasis. More than a Chef, Nick Tall is an artist. Each dish he prepares has a story, inspired and created. Like the classic stars who once sipped poolside cocktails at the Colony Palms, he has become quite the locally celebrated chef himself. Under the rust red scrolls of Jacobean printed wallpaper and antique beamed ceilings, The Purple Palm is a culinary experience reflective of the rich history of the Coachella

Valley. Finding innovative ways to bring exotic life to locally abundant ingredients, like the citrus grown right on the property, he has created an atmosphere that is the epitome of fine desert dining. The endless possibilities of Chef Nick’s talents are more than apparent in the fresh menus that he creates weekly. A menu that brings to life the elements of the international influence of the local culture, because after all no one is from Palm Springs. People who choose to come to the Sonoran Desert city of only 75 years of age, have lived rich international lives and Chef Nick Tall is no exception. A youth spent on the Southern Coast of Florida brings out the spices in Latin America, combined with his culinary career in the Orient and infused with the local region's rich agricultural and Chef Nick Tall gives you a cuisine that is authentically Palm Springs. Developed in the late mid-century this stylish area of palms and canyons is home to the fabulously preserved roadside inns.

Housed in a stone clad 1950’s lodge that has been transformed into a double, salt water pool oasis, the V is a sophisticated retreat that has all of the mid-century charm of the region's heyday. Sitting proudly at the base of Mt San Jacinto, entering the lobby of the V you are greeted by south facing views of the plummeting peaks and rocky ridges created by the Andreas Fault, a sight rarely seen from a hotel pool in the Coachella Valley. Flanked by terraced and walled guestrooms, the angular, eagle thunderbird shaped pool at the V is a natural social setting lending itself to an atmosphere of trendy luxury. Local DJ’s pump the sounds of sultry beats at the Saturday pool parties, where giant inflatable swans provide an entertaining lounging experience, for guests who have come to the desert for a social escape. At this property you will find a diverse crowd of vacationers infused with locals, all in Palm Springs for the same reason, to soak up the world renowned poolside party life. Staying in character with the mid-century design influence, the open floorpan of the guestrooms with ensuite walled terraces, provide the perfect place for inmates to gather around private firepits and swing in relaxing hammock chairs. GM has a legendary history of hospitality in Las Vegas spanning more than forty years. Of the brand’s 14 hotels and resorts, the Delano stands apart as a sophisticated, refreshing alternative to its sister properties. Originally opened as The Hotel at Mandalay Bay back in 2003, it was reimagined as The Delano in 2014 after a top to bottom renovation inspired by the contemporary design of The Delano South Beach. A partnership between MGM and Morgans Hotel Group, the non-smoking, non-gaming 1,117 room all-suite hotel offers the boutique atmosphere and attention to detail that define Morgans properties. It begins with the inviting lobby experience-soft lighting, a cozy coffee and tea bar and friendly staffers with iPads ready to assist with any guest needs. Other thoughtful touches--complimentary flavored water, a rotating shadow box exhibit (currently highlighting vintage cocktail guides) and large mirror ador ned with handwritten inspirational sayings that change every day. Accommodations at the Delano are spacious at 725 square foot or larger and sleekly designed in neutral tones. Suites boast floor to ceiling windows with Strip, beach, or mountain views, a separate

living area with seating for five, and master bathroom with a glass enclosed shower and soaking tub. Distinctively scented bath amenities come from BATHHOUSE Spa, the hotel’s well-appointed 14,000 square foot spa and gym complex. Unwind in the spa’s eucalyptus steam room and redwood sauna. With its location adjacent to Mandalay Bay, the Delano offers easy access to the resort’s dizzying array of restaurants, shopping, gaming and pools. Right next to the Delano Beach Club pool sits Mandalay Bay Beach--an 11-acre man-made beach with sand, a 1.6 million gallon wave pool, four additional pools and private cabanas. Culinary indulgence awaits at the Delano’s two main dining outlets. Located on the lobby level, Della’s Kitchen serves breakfast and lunch all day daily, with farm-totable items made from regionally sourced ingredients. The casual eatery’s peaches and cream French toast is a standout, garnished with peach compote, granola and bourbon crumble and creme Anglaise. For a more upscale experience, Rivea doesn’t disappoint. Located on the 64th floor, the rooftop restaurant is known for its spectacular Strip views, outdoor balcony dining and attentive, knowledgeable wait staff. Delano Executive Chef Bruno Riou updates the European-born Alain Ducasse concept, with fresh seasonal takes on small

plates inspired by food markets in the Italian and French Rivieras. Must-have specialties-marinated sea bass, beef carpaccio and chickpea fries. Save room for Rivea’s signature dessert--a decadent limoncello baba cake, drizzled tableside with chilled limoncello and fresh vanilla whipped cream. The Delano is one of only a few hotels on the Strip that is pet friendly, with a first-class selection of amenities available through its Doggie Butler Service. Four legged guests receive a welcome bag upon arrival with biscuits, a leather toy and waste disposal bag. In addition to a small but serviceable dog park right outside, the hotel provides dog walking services for a fee with optional text messages and photos so you know your best friend is being well taken care of. Like many other hotels, the Delano does not allow dogs to be left unattended unless they are in a crate or carrier. Not to worry-crates are available for rental. And yes, the 24-hour room service menu includes Doggie Delights. For a luxurious, rejuvenating oasis that will transport you from the Strip while staying right in the heart of it, The Delano Las Vegas is your best bet.

Moment Factory Aura

Montreal TH E PARIS O F NO R TH A MERICA BY CATHERINE AND ERSEN

Y

ou know that feeling when someone lets you in on a secret? All of a sudden you feel a little sneaky and a little giddy. You’ve just been trusted with some very special information. You now have access to something that few people do and you are now one of the few keepers of this treasured knowledge that was given to you in a whisper, because it was that precious. I live for those moments, especially when I travel: The secret dish that’s not on the menu and has to be ordered in a very specific way; the password that gets you into an underground watering hole to hear the best live, local music; the undisclosed hot spring that’s off the map and way off the tourist trail. I live for those moments-when a local trusts you so much that they’re willing to let you in on one of their city’s secrets. My trip to Montreal felt like one whispered secret after another. It started before I even got there. So I’m waiting in the Delta Sky Lounge for my flight and a Delta representative asks me to follow him. He takes me through a door I’d never noticed before, down a set of stairs

98 | MetMatNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

and before I can ask why, he opens another door and there we are on the tarmac—as in, where the planes are. He explains that my plane is now departing from a different terminal and walks me over to a Porsche. Yep, it’s right there on the tarmac too. He opens the passenger door for me and explains, “We do this for VIP’s—Celebrities, Government Officials, and Delta Diamond Club Members who have tight connections. It’s called our Porsche Service.” The last part was uttered just above a whisper. The Delta representative then drives me past a dozen or so planes until we arrive at mine. A private stairway is set up and at the top, is a covert door. “This is how I get on?” I ask, walking up the stairs in disbelief. When we get to the top, he nods and opens the door to the plane. No need to go back into the airport and wait for boarding instructions. Just up the steps and there I was, in my seat sipping champagne before the jet bridge for all the other passengers was even set up. How did I not know about this Porsche Service before? It was a secret. The next one was disclosed about 20 minutes later. This time, not in a whisper. Our pilot announced that our flight from

NYC to Montreal would be 45 minutes. Yes, as in less than an hour. I’ve had commutes from one side of Manhattan to the other that were longer than that. Instead, today, I’m commuting to--what I’ve been told is--a miniature version of Paris which is a little bit different, isn’t it? Next, we arrive at our hotel, Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile, where every staff member we encounter is genuinely smiling and happy to greet us. It became quite clear over the course of our stay that their staff is carefully hand-picked. They truly enjoy hospitality. Again, I found myself questioning how seasoned I actually was as a traveler: How am I not more familiar with this hotel group? I’d obviously come across the brand before, but I had no idea it was such a step above. It’s almost as if it’s been kept a secret. Part of a French multinational hotel group, Sofitel sums up its philosophy in one word: Magnifique--the French word for magnificent--a word that’s synonymous with gorgeous, splendid, lovely, and royal. Nothing could be more true of this hotel and its staff. The Le Renoir restaurant and Le Bar within the hotel were refined down to the detail from the dashing décor and

clever cocktails to the creative menu and elegant dishes. Dessert was no exception. (Psssst, don’t tell anyone, but their Head Pastry Chef, Roland del Monte, renowned for his ice cream, was made a knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit by the French Agricultural Minister and has indulged the sweet teeth of French presidents and other state officials. He wants people to enjoy his creations, not his titles, so that stays between you and me.) That air of charm and French refinement shines throughout the city of Montreal, however I wouldn’t confine it to being “a miniature Paris.” Its flavor is slightly different. There’s a modern flair added to the Old European feel in Montreal that’s magnetic. You get the sense that the city doesn’t want you to just wander in and out of its historic sites and museums. It wants to make sure you’re engaged while you’re there. For example, I was caught by surprise at the Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal by the spectacular multi-media light and music show called Aura. It was, not only stunning by way of its production value, but also by the way it left me with a much deeper appreciation for the architecture and sanctity of the Cathedral itself.

Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts Museum was another perfect example of the city’s desire to keep you captivated. One minute y o u ’ re l e a r n i n g a b o u t c l a s s i c R e n o i r paintings and the next, you’re diving into “Love is Love,” a daring and exquisite exhibit by French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier. It’s remarkable. Here’s what’s not a secret: My fascination with food. It’s amazing to me how much eating through a city will tell you almost everything about it. In Montreal, that happens right in the streets—open-air farmers markets taken to a whole other level. Not just once a week, but every day, they set-up these elaborate indoor/outdoor markets with colorful, fresh, seasonal produce, artisanal breads, pates, foie gras, soups from scratch, pastries, and the types meats and cheeses that, in New York, you would have to seek out a specialty store to find. Within 15 minutes of being at the market, we put together a charcuterie board that would rival most fine dining restaurants. In Montreal, they simply call it “grocery shopping.” I know. It makes me jealous too. These markets are everywhere but the most prominent ones are the Jean Talon Market and the Atwater Market.

Pied de Cochon

And now, one of the best-kept secrets I’ve ever come across: The Sugar Shack of Chef Martin Picard’s restaurant, La Pied de Conchon. Quick background: The term “Sugar Shack” comes from the Canadian tradition of boiling sap down to maple syrup in a shack out in the countryside. In short, it describes a rustic atmosphere. Get Picard involved and what you have is a renowned chef’s gourmet reinvention of local, traditional, harvest season recipes. Imagine, being out in the peacefulness and fragrance of a gorgeous farm, knowing everything from this land you’re on is being cooked for you elegantly course after course, and you’re being served in a cozy log-cabin like setting—picnic-table style with a front porch outside where the barbeque smoker is within arm’s reach. I was in foodie bliss. The atmosphere, the flavors, everything was so grounded and sophisticated at the same time. One of the best culinary experiences of my life. Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels that way. It can take months to get a reservation. But I assure you, if you plan ahead, it will be a night you will never forget. Sometimes a secret is just too good to keep.

Marigot Bay Resort & Marina ST. LUCIA’S BEST CARRIBEAN HIDEAWAY BY JANIS T U RK

O

f all the Caribbean islands, none seems as extraordinary and as sublimely tucked away as St. Lucia. There guests can hide away on a private sparkling bay flanked by rainforest-covered jungle mountains and a pristine little beach, making it a sublime vacation or honeymoon spot. And with direct/nonstop JetBlue flights from JFK, getting to St. Lucia is a breeze. All the best island fun—like street parties and water sports—await, or simply unplug from city life and enjoy a peaceful Caribbean retreat. St. Lucia is home many spectacular hotels and resorts, but my favorite is one far from where the cruise ships dock. For the best

100 | MetMatNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

and most luxurious St. Lucia experience, I prefer to stay at the secluded elegant Marigot Bay Resort & Marina by Capella. Romantic, playful, scenic, and sexy, this tony little resort offers the best island adventure in the Caribbean. Centered by two freshwater infinity pools on the upper and lower levels of the resort, Marigot Bay Resort also offers a luxury spa, an active marina, attractive shops, boats and beaches, fine-dining restaurants, Sushi bars and a swim-up watering hole, along with a newly renovated Rum Cave restaurant, featuring fun and informative rum tasting events. The lavish resort has sprawling indoor/outdoor lounge spaces, garden pavilions, patios, cabanas, water features, and a private boardwalk. With

stunning views of Marigot Bay (featured in movies), and with shimmering waters, and mountain flora and fauna, Marigot Bay Resort offers a blissful escape. The resort’s 124 extravagantly handsome rooms and suites offer hot tubs, balconies, and West Indian-inspired décor. You’ll feel as though you’re in your own private island residence, complete with five-star amenities and your own personal assistant. Whether guests book the most expensive suite or simply a standard room, all are assigned their own Capella Personal Assistant who calls in advance of their trip to make their every desire is ready once they arrive. Once there, the personal assistant will book romantic dinner reservations, arrange a cruise from the resort’s own Capella Marina, or set up

special island adventure excursions. During my stay, the staff pampered me as I enjoyed an enormous one-bedroom suite, complete with a living room, ultra-contemporary kitchen, laundry room, spacious master bedroom, and grand master bath. With my own deck overlooking the pool and Capella Marina, and with a private hot tub and fast dependable Wi-Fi, I couldn’t imagine nicer island accommodations. Two- and threebedroom suites are also available, and families with children will appreciate the resort’s “Zando’s” Kid’s Activity Program. One of the highlights of my stay was a visit with Billy Boyle, Marigot Bay Resort & Marina’s executive chef, who carefully and skillfully cultivates the resort’s farmto-fork dining experiences. Chef Billy’s m e t i c u l o u s l y c u r a t e d m e n u s f e a t u re delicious, locally-sourced dishes inspired by fresh ingredients available seasonally from Saint Lucian farmers. Local fisherman

Captain Warren docks at the Rum Cave to deliver his catch of the day for the evening’s dinner. Another blissful part of my stay was an afternoon at the Auriga Spa & Fitness at Marigot Bay Resort & Marina. With views of the bay and mountains, the private indoor/ outdoor spa village and fitness facilities are hidden among trees and verdant foliage, creating an exclusive oasis. Before my treatment, I enjoyed the steam inhalation room, Jacuzzi, and sauna cabana, and a welcoming, grounding ceremony, employing carefully selected herbs designed to prepare the body for the spa experience. The large state-of-the-art fitness center was also handy day and night. The Spa village is even home to a treehouse gazebo, perfect for a romantic dinner for two or a special spa treatment setting. With the resort’s marina’s shops, restaurant and sundries store, and with a ferry to take

guests across the bay to LaBas Beach at Marigot, to swim, kayak, and more, guests never want to leave Marigot Bay. But if you do, be sure to take a “Smooth Operator” private charter boat to the other side of the island (or you can ask your Capella Personal Assistant to arrange for a car). Take day trips or half-day excursions to visit cocoa farms, or to bathe in natural hot springs, or take a volcano tour, and along the way pass through charming villages and see St. Lucia’s famous twin volcanic mountain peaks, the Pitons. Visit Pigeon Island and Anse Cochon beaches, where snorkeling and diving is a delight. Or make a scenic climb up the Marigot Bay Ridge with the resort’s resident Ranger. With all this to do and see in St. Lucia, you owe it to yourself to book your Marigot Bay getaway. marigotbayresortc.com

Palace Hotel Tokyo J A PAN E SE H OSP ITA LITY IN U NMATCHED LU XU RY BY N ORI INOGU CHI & WILLY NICHT ER

J

apan is a country of remarkable beauty and history, one that includes years of isolation from the Western world. Because of this, visiting Japan is an utterly unique experience, invoking a blend of ancient traditions and modern influences unlike what any other country can offer. And it is that spirit, along with wonderful amenities and excellent service, that the Palace Hotel Tokyo offers to all its guests. The space where the hotel is located initially hosted the Teito Hotel in 1947, a symbol of the increased Western influence in Japan following the end of World War II. However, in 1961, the Teito Hotel was razed to the ground and replaced with the original Palace Hotel, which was a greater blend of the two cultures. It even won a prize for its innovative use of traditional Japanese architecture and materials in its construction. Rebuilt into the Palace Hotel Tokyo in 2009, it pays homage to the traditions of its predecessors while forging its own identity as a magnificent representation of Japanese luxury. The Palace Hotel Tokyo has several different kinds of rooms and suites, ranging in size from 484 square feet to 2,744 square feet, making them perfectly suited for individual or group usage. All rooms offer stunning views of the hotel’s surroundings, including lush gardens and a spectacular skyline. As far as comforts, its rooms feature a fully-stocked minibar, an in-room safe, two LCD TVs, one of which is located in the

bathroom, and complimentary high-speed internet, both wireless and wired. The rooms go from Deluxe to Club Grand Deluxe, while the suites go from an Executive Suite to their Palace Suite. Naturally, their Palace Suite is the most luxurious suite they have to offer, with features such as a service kitchen with its own entrance, a walk-in wardrobe, 24-hour in-room dining, and an M’s brand speaker system. It is perfect for those who want to experience the fullest extent of the Palace Hotel Tokyo’s comforts. When it comes to food, the hotel is well-equipped to meet any and all culinary needs. With seven different restaurants, three bars, and a pastry shop, you will find wildly different dining experiences. Wadakura offers up kaiseki cuisine, a refined and uniquely Japanese meal experience involving several small plates brought out over the course of an evening. Tatsumi provides delicious tempura made with the freshest seafood available, making for a rich and flavorful meal. There is also Sushi Kanesaka, which provides sushi produced by Michelin-starred Chef Shinji Kanesaka. And for those who want to taste something closer to home, their Grand Kitchen is open all day and serves up an array of Japanese-influenced food from the American, French, Spanish, and Italian culinary traditions. The Palace Hotel Tokyo offers relaxation and comfort with their spa, Evian SPA TOKYO. Not only is the spa gorgeous, designed to resemble the path Evian® brand mineral water takes through its Alpine

home, but it also features several different luxury treatments all designed to revitalize its guests. Additionally, the hotel has several different venues for meetings or other events. It has seven different function rooms and three meeting rooms designed to suit whatever need is required of them. Among the seven function rooms, Aoi is the largest, capable of holding 1,440 people, while Kikyo is the smallest, capable of holding 90. All the rooms offer striking views and elegant décor and can be furnished and decorated to host occasions ranging from dinner parties to weddings. The meeting rooms consist of two regular meeting rooms and one boardroom, all of which are comfortable and tastefully decorated. These rooms can be used for any meeting and will surely lend an authentic sense of luxury to the proceedings. Of final importance is the hotel’s location, which is right in the heart of Tokyo. bout 5 years ago, Blast owner Maria Ciancio-Gioino, suffered a painful knee injury while working out. For years following, she endured multiple cortisone injections and physical therapy with no results. A f t e r h o u r s o f l a t e - n i g h t re s e a rc h , desperate for relief, Maria learned about Fasica Blasting – a treatment designed to help the body promote healthy blood flow, increase nerve activity, help with pain and lesson the look of cellulite. She gave it a shot, eager to find any chance of reclaiming her life and work-out regimen. After less than a year of self-treatment, 2x a week, she now considers herself fully recovered, thanks to the FasciaBlaster. Her experience inspired her to open Blast Spa & Fitness, where she now passes the success on to those looking to heal their bodies and get in shape. Maria says, “When I first got the FasciaBlaster, I was skeptical. I thought this could never be better than injections.

After just a few blasting treatments, I had less pain and more mobility. And even better, my skin was tighter overall and I could barely see cellulite in spots it used to be very visible.” The device, called the FasciaBlaster is an FDA-approved Class 1 medical device that resembles a wand with crab-like claws. At Blast, expert fascia technician Lauren Cornea, spends up to an hour and half with each client and says, “Fascia is the connective tissue that is on top of the muscle. It can recoil which creates pockets known as cellulite or restrict muscle activation and proper circulation. The FasciaBlaster works best on skin that has been oiled up. I recommend that clients

workout or sit in the sauna first so they’re heated up. Then with the wand, I use brisk up and down movements for 3-5 minutes per zone and over a few weeks clients are seeing amazing results.” The FasciaBlaster optimizes overall health by breaking up any restrictions, adhesions and distortions that have developed in the body. Blast Spa & Fitness, located on Northern Boulevard in Great Neck is the only spa offering FasicaBlaster treatments on Long Island. Clients can select treatments up to an hour and a half, complete with an infrared salt sauna and personal training session. Blast also offers daily fitness classes including TRX, Barre, Yoga, Bootcamp,

Self Defense, Reformer Pilates and Silent Spin - where each client gets a personalized Bluetooth headset to personalize the volume of the music. Blast offers massages and other body treatments in addition to a popup hair salon so clients can leave feeling beautiful from head to toe. Felicia Madison SERVES UP A LUNCHTIME HELPING OF LAUGHTER TO DAYTIME NEW YORK BY LILLIAN LANGTRY

C

omedian Felicia Madison draws on her experiences as a stay-at-home mom in affluent Manhattan as the basis for her observational comedy, poking fun at marriage, parenthood, and life in general. Felicia had a childhood dream of becoming a Broadway dancer. Her parents had other plans… which is why she was pre-med in college! A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a major in the biological basis of behavior and a minor in marketing (she jokes that she’s only qualified to sell drugs), Felicia decided to try her hand at comedy after a class at the Manhattan Comedy School. This interest grew an now she also blogs, podcasts, and is currently writing a television pilot. She can be found performing stand-up throughout New York City. In 2016, Felicia launched Laughing

Affairs, which produces daytime and evening comedy shows for social events such as birthdays, showers, and corporate and fundraising events. A production of Laughing Affairs is Laughercise. Laughercise eschews the traditional late night environs of comedy clubs, instead treating guests to a one course meal, dessert, and glass of wine in the afternoon as both up-and-coming and veteran comedians take to the stage. Laughercise’s times and locations are perfect for comedy fans seeking laughs outside of the traditional late night, male-dominated clubs. One of Felicia’s and Laughing Affairs latest projects is Comedy for a Cause, where Felicia and other comics come together to raise money for a foundation, charity, or benefit, with all proceeds going to the cause. Felicia has two significant events coming up next month in January 2018.

The first one, Funny Business, is January 16th, 2018 at the famous Friars Club, a panel discussion where Felicia and female executives will teach the ins and outs of the comedy business. Felicia’s next Laughercise lunch will be January 31st, 2018 featuring comedians Jessica Kirson and Adrienne Iapalucci. Through the Laughercise lunches and her panel discussions, Felicia’s goal is to help elevate female comedians to reach the same level of success as their male counterparts. The format “enables me to perform during the day, when I am completely free, and in front of ‘my’ audience. The lunches have been a huge success for both the moms and the comedians,” Felicia told Broadway World.

eSports Pioneer Ted Owen CHAMPIONING FOR eSPORTS INCLUSION TO THE PARIS 2024 OLYMPICS BY LILLIAN LANGTRY

T

ed Owen, the father of eSports, is close to seeing video gaming in the Olympics. Among the trailblazers of this multi-billion dollar industry, Owen has been working toward this moment for two decades, with outlets like Bloomberg. com recognizing him as “a pioneer of the video gaming industry.” The potential introduction of eSports offers the Olympic Movement potential to fulfill its own Charter that “the practice of sport is a human right”. Whilst many Olympic sports favor young athletes who spend a lifetime preparing with a specialist regime in a national athletic organization, eSports offers a potential democratization and broader participation in being shortlisted to participate. PlayAPI’s Ted Owen emphasized that, “whilst traditional athletic events may involve at most several hundred athletes being shortlisted for a particular event, eSports could potentially involve millions of individuals competing for a spot on their 2024 eSports national Olympic team”. Between 1993 and 2017, serial

Owen launched several groundbreaking ventures. Game Dealer (which became UGO) and Professional Interactive Entertainment which became Global Gaming League (GGL), the World’s first professional online gaming community. Among GGL’s achievements was to incorporate an eSports event into The Gravity Games and broadcast play-byplay coverage of the eSports scene and community through GGL’s media division, Epileptic Gaming (a precursor to Twitch), all aimed at making e-sports more accessible. As CEO, Owen made a name for himself leading to his latest endeavor - PlayAPI – which has the capability to create and maintain fair play between global eSports participants. Owen’s campaign to bring competitive eSports to the Olympics began over a decade ago when he had talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and

then the Chinese government to introduce eSports to the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. Global Gaming League even held an Exhibition event prior to the Games. Although the idea was slow to catch-on, the rapid rise in competitive gaming and popularity of eSports (some 680m streams of video games were watched in the past year alone), led officials on reflection to give credence to what Owen has been suggesting all along. Ted Owen commented,“ eSports offers the Paris Olympics the ability to break new ground in becoming a truly global phenomenon in 2024. Handled correctly, eSports can provide a truly global, fair platform for everyone to compete in – what more could the IOC and Paris hope for in meeting the aspirations of the Olympic Charter?” O w e n ’s i n f l u e n c e o n t h e l a r g e s t entertainment form in the world both predicted and contributed to what is now the largest sport in the world: e-sports. He has again positioned himself as an entrepreneur to watch now and in the years leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
