Publisher’s Note

I can never wait for the month of August, because it’s when Long Island is at its best. Not only that, it’s a chance to share precious moments with family at our world-class beaches. Long Islanders are lucky, because of our bountiful produce, stunning vistas and quality attractions. We are delighted that 25A has become your go-to publication for happenings, restaurants, activities, culture, and so much more. Our cover this month is Downtown Girl, Alexa Ray Joel. The sole child of legendary Long Islanders Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, she is blazing her own path as a sultry vocalist and independent woman. Take a look at our exclusive photo shoot and I think you’ll love her as much as I do. She’s one striking lady! In this issue, we feature Seawanhaka Yacht Club by our own historian, Monica Randall; the article explores the organization’s annual Fourth of July celebration and glamorous parties along the Gold Coast. In addition, our experienced staff takes you on trips to Switzerland, the Caribbean, Newcastle, and all the way to Downtown Manhattan. Summer is also about dining and entertaining. Andrea Correale, of Elegant Affairs, shows us how to make a popsicle with a “pop”! We also have exquisite Manhattan eateries profiled. As this is The Arts Issue, you’ll find a wide variety of articles on fine-spun topics including ballet, opera, novels, and the yearly event of ArtHamptons. We are blessed to have excellent writers and loyal readers. Wishing you all a safe and relaxing season!

EDITOR 'S Note

Happy August! It’s my birthday this month and I couldn’t be happier. Last month, I promised that we would continue to bring the best of Long Island while interjecting a dose of Manhattan living – and that’s just what we’ve done! In the forthcoming pages, you’ll find what you’ve always loved about 25A, including articles from Victoria Crosby and Monica Randall, travel pieces concerning luxurious destinations, astounding art galore and Long Island cultural activities. But this month, you’ll also discover our new 25A list, which explores Manhattan’s most powerful personalities, an exclusive fashion spread (styled by yours truly) and new dining destinations that delight. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some of our loyal followers at our cover party for Jean Shafiroff at our Fourth of July celebration at ArtHamptons. Thank you all for your kind words; I look forward to your feedback and hope you enjoy the issue as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it.

Celebrating the Fourth Beautiful Festivities on the Gold Coast Story and Photos by Monica Randall IN CELEBRATION OF FIREWORKS Every fourth of July there is no better place to be than Oyster Bay Harbor. Not only does the sky explode in a kaleidoscope of light, but there are also dazzling views from both the bay and across the Sound, stretching almost the entire length of Connecticut. For the landed gentry of the North Shore, there is no better seat than the spacious porch at Center Islands crown jewel, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht- Club. Hundreds of members and their friends gather on the wide lawn to watch the event of the summer season – the spectacular fireworks display that is fired off from a barge off the beach of a private estate, about 400 yards away in Cove Neck. For as far back as I could remember, I’d gone to the fabled yacht club as my best friend at the time was married to the clubs commodore, even years after he passed away we continued to go there as it was the only place to be.

SEAWANHAKA YACHT CLUB To those who have never been to the landmark building, there is no public access. A private police booth at the entrance to the exclusive Island keeps the curious away. The clubhouse was built by a group of dedicated yachtsmen, with names like, Underhill, Weeks, and Townsend, who’d been sailing in Oyster Bay Harbor for decades. Wanting a home base of their own, in 1892 they commissioned Robert W. Gibson to design what was to become one of the most beautiful private yacht Clubs on the East Coast. The three-storied grey and white-shingled Colonial Revival manor house is perched high on a bluff overlooking the bay, with dozens of yachts, and a three hundred foot dock. There is a graceful fanlight window crowning the center gable. The hipped roof is punctuated with dormers, terminated in a spacious parapet. A wide veranda, open to sea breezes, spans out into three semi octagonal projections in the center and at both ends. Over the years, the breathtaking setting has been used in dozens of TV shoots, and the 1994 Martin Scorsese film, "Age of Innocence." FIREWORKS I’m not sure when the fireworks became part of Seawanhaka’s July celebration, but historically it all began about a thousand years ago in China when some pranksters began mixing dangerous chemicals together to see who could make the loudest noise. They were thrilled to discover that when you lit gunpowder it exploded, shot out flames and filled the room with smoke. Some of the experimenters blew themselves up in the process, all 24 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

in good fun. Amazed by this discovery, and its theatrical effects, they began building rockets filled with gunpowder and star-like bursts. They were a big hit at weddings and traditional holidays, and being superstitious, they were convinced the explosions and fire scared away evil spirits. Soon, no event was complete without them. By the twelfth century Italian explorers visiting China on ships were thunderstruck by the sight of the new invention. Soon they started adding other chemicals to create fiery reds, blues, and green colors to the mix. At Versailles, Marie Antoinette and her doomed king fired off rockets of light to celebrate the birth of a new heir to the throne. In the vast formal gardens they staged mock battles around glistening man made lakes to reflect the showers of light from spinning wheels of sparks and mortar shells. Here in America when our country finally separated from the yoke of British law on July 4th in 1776 fireworks became the revered symbol of freedom. This past July every inch of Seawanhaka’s vast emerald green lawn was filled with members holding their breath and a drink waiting for the muchanticipated light show to begin. Just before the last glimmer of light faded in the West, there was a loud boom and then another followed by a collective sigh, hearts raced, and everyone became a kid again. THE PARTY OF THE CENTURY Giant yachts, not quite as big as the Titanic, but inching their way in that direction had sailed in from all over the country and cordoned off part of

The 1920's Glowing Globes Light the Way to the 300 ft. Dock the bay. Some were strung with lights from the top of their masts to both ends of the boat. At some point I looked up and saw what looked like glowing UFO's floating ominously in the sky about a hundred feet up. They appeared to have drifted across the Sound and were then passing over the yacht club heading towards where the fireworks were going to be launched. I found out the next day that they were drones that were there to film the celebratory event. Several of us who were perched on the lowest level of the long club dock hopped into a small sail boat and coasted further out into the bay to get as close to the festivities as possible. The fireworks hadn’t even started yet, but four, fifty foot obelisks mounted on what looked like small barges were exploding in shifting colors of pink, lavender, and blue. If there ever was a party that represented the Gold Coast and all its glitter and phantasmagoria, it was Clarence Mackay’s 1924, million-dollar bash for the Prince of Wales. It was held at the Harbor Hill, a 125 room chateau perched on the highest point in Roslyn, overlooking the Long Island Sound. The world’s most expensive party at the time also included a lavish fireworks display and many other treats that were well documented in the New York Times. Thinking it would impress the English Prince, on the castles roof there was a 200-foot replica of the American flag constructed in red, white, and blue lights, at an estimated cost of $100,000. Lining the two-mile long drive thousands of candle-lit Japanese lanterns led guests up to the massive house. In the Versailles inspired gardens, the fountains and reflecting pools were filled with Chanel #5 perfume to intoxicate those passing by. Exotic foods were trucked in from Delmonico's, the most expensive restaurant in New York.

In a pink and white tent the size of Ringling Brothers Circus, Paul Whiteman, and his forty-piece orchestra played until dawn, as the reveling guests danced the night away. Some of the biggest stars from Broadway and Hollywood came to join the party including W.C. Fields, Al Jolson, the Marx Brothers, and George Gershwin. Hollywood heartthrob, Valentino is alleged to have danced the Flamenco on a torch lit veranda. Metropolitan Opera star Enrico Caruso sang Italian love ballads at the piano in the ballroom. It was the height of Prohibition and gangsters like Al Capone, Waxey Gordon, and Legs Diamond were called in from all over the tri-state area with their speedboats full of bootleg gin. But the drink of choice that night was champagne, at 100 dollars a bottle. The liquor bill for that one night was rumored to be $150,000. Old Clarence was never one to cut corners. He would ride the wave of the high life for another five years, then one dark day in October 1929, he lost 300 million in a matter of hours. Devastated, and having to dismiss his 135 servants he moved into the stable with his prized horse, Land O' Burns, and they lived on oats and hay for the rest of their days. The Harbor Hill event has often been referred to as the party of the century, and I missed it because I wasn’t born yet, but as fate would have it I caught its recreation in David Merrick’s nine million dollar extravaganza in the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby. The movie version was better, of course, because I had Robert Redford to gaze at, and on July 4th, Paramount Pictures stopped filming long enough to fire off a display of fireworks and rockets from a barge off Gatsby’s beach. This turned out to be the happening of the year, and we also had Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern and Sam Waterson, all agog as the lights and stars filled the night sky. Then all was quiet and it was back to business and dancing the Charleston till 5:00 AM in the morning. August 2015 | 25

Madeline Singas A Prosecutor. Not a Politician.

A

By Nikita Coelho

female prosecutor that roots herself in justice, compassion and integrity, Madeline Singas, Acting District Attorney of Nassau County is on the road to being our county’s permanent District Attorney. Ms. Singas is the first Greek-American and second woman to become the top law enforcement official of Nassau County. A Fordham University Law School Graduate, Singas has been a prosecutor since 1991, serving justice and enforcing the law. For the last two decades this empowering woman has prosecuted violent criminals with emphasis on those that target the most vulnerable members of our society - women, children and the elderly. In 2006, Singas started the first Special Victims Bureau of Nassau County where she instituted changes that have held more offenders accountable and kept the vulnerable safe. Singas has also overseen tough prosecutions of financial criminals, corrupt public officials, and drunk drivers who threaten the safety of everyone in our community. As Nassau County’s Chief Assistant District Attorney since 2011, Singas supervised the prosecution of approximately 30,000 criminal cases each year, and helped design and implement a plethora of groundbreaking programs to combat gun violence, gangs, domestic violence, and to end the scourge of prescription drug abuse on Long Island. 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Living in Manhasset with her husband and children, Madeline is running for a position in a place that she knows best: “I am running because I am a passionate voice for justice for those who have no voice, in a county that I know, a county that I love.” Upon taking office in January of 2015, Singas has faced the numerous problems that are taking headlines throughout Long Island. The current drug problem is something that she hopes to change. “No one is above the law,” Singas says and she plans to enforce that. The momentum of her strong campaign is because of her intricate and detailed background in criminal law. Singas has been enforcing the law and dealing with the harsh realities of crime day in and day out. She is proving that she cares and wants to make a difference so that her children and all the people of Nassau County can be proud of the place they call home. The upcoming election will be on November 3rd, hoping that the voice of justice takes precedent. Madeline Singas believes she will make Nassau County a better environment for all ages.

The A to Z of De Toxifying Your Environment

F

By Salome Langvin

ormer investment management professional and mother of three, Sophia Ruan Gushée never wanted to research this topic- the toxic burdens in our bodies, in our homes and on our planet. She thought she and her family led a healthy lifestyle until one evening when skimming through reading materials that she hoped would further enlighten her on how to care for her three month old daughter; she came across information about a hormone disruptor in conventional baby bottles and a carcinogen in baby bottle nipples. She was confused and alarmed. No one had warned her that her daughter was being exposed to these daily. She read further and was shocked to learn that toxic chemicals pervade everyday life. Household products—including cleaning products, beauty products, children’s products and much more—contain chemicals that also contaminate dust and air, both indoors and outside. Gushée learned that billions of pounds of toxins have been released into our environment over the last several decades, and most of us are unaware of how this affects us. However, diet is a major source of exposure. In an effort to reduce her family’s exposures, Gushée continued her research for more than five years, amassing studies, facts and statistics. She learned

30 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

since World War II, more than 84,000 chemicals have been introduced into American commerce and less than 1 % are regulated. Rarely is there enough information to assess the effects on human and environmental health. Gushée decided to publish her findings so that others can have easier access to this information, much of which is difficult to find and understand. The culmination of her research, A to Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide to Reducing Our Toxic Exposures, is a practical handbook for navigating the toxins in our environment. The book includes a comprehensive science-based overview of why you should reduce your toxic exposures, hundreds of tips, as well as ten key ideas to implement today. Gushée aims to empower and motivate individuals and families to reduce unnecessary exposures and become more conscious consumers. To be released September 29, 2015, you can reserve your copy now on Amazon.com. A to Z of D-Toxing is an invaluable reference guide for a head of household who is concerned with the health and wellness of our bodies and our planet. nontoxicliving.tips

Restaurateur on the Rise 75 Main’s Zach Erdem

R

By W.A Muller

ising restaurateur Zach Erdem has gained considerable attention within the hospitality industry after transforming Hamptons summer dining staple 75 Main into a year-round hotspot under his stewardship. The dynamic 32-year-old reinvented his Southampton eatery, combining the classic style of the Hamptons with the enticing elements of New York City nightlife. The restaurant and lounge has become a favorite among locals, visitors and celebrities alike, attracting Hollywood A-Listers and politicians including Sarah Jessica Parker, LA Reid, Kelly Ripa, Stanley Tucci, Sofia Vergara, Howard Stern, Pierce Brosnan, Barbara Walters, Jodie Foster, Alex Rodriquez and Vice President Joe Biden. Erdem’s esteemed reputation in the restaurant industry was not established overnight. After immigrating to the United States from Turkey in 2002, Erdem struggled to make a living and was planning to move back home after just six months. With only sixty dollars in his pocket—which was loaned to him by a friend—Erdem took a quick trip to the Hamptons two days before his scheduled flight back to Turkey. After arriving in Southampton, Erdem stopped for lunch at the first restaurant he saw—75 Main. Erdem quickly befriended 75 Main’s General Manager, who offered him a bartending position on the spot. Impressed by the Hamptons and its

posh reputation, Erdem strived to create a name for himself in this elite community. In the years that followed, Erdem traveled all over the Unites States, working in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami, gaining insight into the continuously changing restaurant business. Erdem eventually returned to Southampton, with new found experience and knowledge, to manage the seasonal restaurant Nello Summertimes. In 2010, Erdem was finally able to fulfill his dream of taking ownership of 75 Main—a dream that was born more than nine years earlier, when he first set foot on the East End. By revamping the restaurant with an expertly crafted menu, sophisticated decor and the addition of post-dinner entertainment, Erdem took the already established restaurant to the next level, renewing local interest and attracting a range of new clientele. Erdem has collaborated with prominent and award-winning chefs, artists, designers and D.J.’s, turning 75 Main into one of the Hamptons’ most popular dining and nightlife destinations. Erdem plans to continue expanding his business with additional restaurant projects in the future. 75main.com

wenty five years since it was founded Nassau County Museum of Art celebrated with a ball honoring Nassau's present County Executive, Ed Mangano, and former County Executive Tom Gulotta, who was in office at the time of the founding of the museum. The late Arnold Saltzman, was the founding president of the board of trustees, and it was his brilliant suggestion to create a museum at the former Frick mansion in Roslyn Harbor. Since that time NCMA has grown into a world class museum thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Director Emerita, Contance Schwartz, and former Chief Curator Franklin Hill Perrell, and the very capable staff. The theme of the ball was Midnight in Paris and the decor reflected the French style, as guests were greeted by student volunteers from Nassau Community College dressed in French outfits of their own design. They handed each lady a fan decorated with a picture of Paris at night. A raffle tickets was held for a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings, which had been generously donated by Ambalu Jewelers of East Hills. The ball committee included Esther Ambalu, Sara Ambalu, Kimberley Bancroft, Elaine Berger, Eve Califano, Judie Chessin, Victoria Crosby, Lisa Eastman, Thalia Elie, Gale Finkelman-Cohen, Natalia Good, Peri HofferHinden, Joan Hope MacNaughton, Nasrin Mesbah, Patricia Mayer, Cora Michalis, Joe Pescatore, Risa Pulver, Cynthia Rosicki, Catherine Rosso, Kandice Seitz, Ray Sikorski, Irina Sushko and Linda Ugenti. and Patricia Janco-Tupper were the Journal Committee Co-Chairs. The journal was sponsored by Ilke, Molly and Steven Elias Foundation and the dinner was sponsored by the Americana Manhasset. Among the many silent auction itmes were, jewelry, dining experiences, exotic trips, designer handbags, and many other items. Guests sipped wine, champagne and Kir Royal, as French melodies were performed by a small group of the Alex Donner Orchestra. As dinner served in the huge tent on the museum grounds, NCMA Director Karl Willers welcomed guests and thanked them for supporting the museum, then introduced NCMA president and Ball Chairman Angela Susan Anton. The honorees were presented with their awards and each spoke briefly of the importance of a high caliber art museum in Nassau County. A delicious dinner catered by Robbins Wolfe Eventeurs, was served, followed by dancing to the Alex Donner Orchestra. The annual ball is a major fundraiser for NCMA, which helps to support the programming for adults and children, as well as restoring and maintaining the beautiful grounds and property. nassaumuseum.org.

25A Become a Food Prep Pro Learn to Eat the Right Way

By: Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN

A

s a Registered Dietitian, I am often asked for suggestions regarding how to live a healthier lifestyle. Without a doubt, my number one suggestion for people who are having trouble staying on track during the week is to food prep. I believe that by devoting a little bit of time on a weekend, you are already set up for greater success when it comes to making nutritious food choices during the (more chaotic) work week. *And, as we discussed last time, practicing this type of small habit change will ultimately lead to greater success for weeks and months to come.

you get used to this new habit, you can roast some vegetables, grill some chicken breast or steak, or even cook up a small portion of brown rice, quinoa or beans. I find it most convenient to keep these ingredients on the blander side and re-season before consuming. For example, simply throw some beans, chicken, and brown rice in a bowl along with some pre-washed and prechopped veggies, and you’ve got your own Mexican-inspired burrito bowl! Have more time? Cook the raw vegetables in a wok with low sodium soy sauce and sesame oil. Once veggies are cooked through, throw the protein and grain into the wok to reheat for an easy stirfry! You will literally have dinner on the table in under 10 minutes with very little effort day-of.

Here are some tips and tricks to get you going: Start small If the thought of prepping food ahead of time overwhelms you, simply start small. You can ease into food prep by simply washing and chopping some fruits and vegetables, hard-boiling some eggs, or assembling some homemade nuts and fruit trail mix. As

38 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Have a plan Make a list of everything you want to prep for the week. You can create a menu for the week or just decide on some easy and versatile staples that can be used in a variety of different meals. I always choose a few fruits and vegetables, 1-2 protein sources, and 1-2 grains to start.

Be realistic You want this food prep process to make your week easier, not more stressful. Personally, I hate having leftovers that I ultimately have to toss later in the week because I never got to them. That being said, do not go overboard. Most leftovers are only safe in the fridge for 3-4 days, so be careful to only prep enough to get you through the first few days of the week. Worst case scenario, you can certainly freeze some of your leftovers. Target specific times of the day Don’t feel like you have to prep for every single meal of the day. Not only is that overwhelming, but it likely unrealistic as well. Start with your “trouble times.” Think about what time of the day you struggle most with eating

nutritiously. Do you have a tough time eating a healthy breakfast? Are you least prepared when the afternoon snack attack hits? Focus your prep time on making a few options for these specific times.

Alexa Ray Joel A Success in Her Own Right

he only child of award-winning musician Billy Joel and supermodel, Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray Joel is a world-class musician and arbitrator of taste for in the know New Yorkers. Gracious, well spoken and beautiful, Alexa Ray has made a splash on Manhattan’s social scene with a voice and a fierceness that is truly extraordinary. And it isn’t luck that has propelled her this far—it‘s hard work, talent and perseverance. It shouldn’t be surprising then that her career is destined to explode, turning her into a household name—one as big as her parents. This isn’t the first time I’ve worked with Alexa Ray. In fact, in 2013, I was the first magazine editor privileged enough to feature her on the cover of the magazine I had previously worked for. From the very beginning, I could tell that she was diminutive in figure, but not in personality. Meeting for our second photo shoot earlier this month, she looked as good as ever and was eager to tell me her goings on since the last we had met. During our interview, she was thoughtful, vivacious and erudite on all the subjects we covered. Delving right into the heart of the matter, I asked her about “living in the shadow” of her parents. With frankness, she replied: “It’s a great deal of pressure, my father is an iconic, legendary musical genius, but working on my own music is cathartic and has helped me to grow as an artist.”

Alexa Ray Joel The Next Brigitte Bardot

Having a father who was a lyricist, I can well understand the struggle that Alexa Ray has gone through. Yet, she has wrestled that demon and come to terms with it, “Yes, I want to be me, my own person and convey my own identity, but at the same time, I don’t want to deny or not pay homage to my father’s incredible body of work. Since doing the Gap commercial in 2013, I have learned to embrace his beautiful music and once I started playing the chords for Just the Way You Are, it was therapeutic—I was able not to be so hard on myself, in fact, I was proud.” Moving beyond The Gap, we talked of her earlier success with Notice Me, which I still thoroughly enjoy. With catchy lyrics and a melodic, hummable line, the song was her first success: “That did really well on Sirius radio. One of the offshoots of being the child of someone famous is that I’m a perfectionist. I’ll do a lot of recordings and I’m very reluctant to release a song. But, Notice Me, came together very quickly. I actually wrote it while I was taking a shower.” She then turns the meaning of the song, “I never found my way romantically, until very recently. I was very naïve and I would come on too strongly; I didn’t know how to act around guys. I wrote the song because I had a crush on this guy and I didn’t feel like I was getting the right reaction from him; a lot of girls feel like that—an unrequited crush and I think not enough artists are writing about it.” August 2015 | 63

25A When asked about her future plans, Alexa Ray is just as forthcoming. “I’m working on new material; The Carlyle has become a home for me. In October, I’ll be performing for the fourth time in two years. I love it there and am so happy that it seems they love me back.” She went on to say, ”I’ve played a lot of great rooms in the city.” Turning away from music, I asked her about relationship with New York. “I can’t remember the last time I’ve written a song outside of the city. This is where I write—at home; it’s where I’m rooted; it’s where I grew up. And I love the eclectic energy of this place—you walk outside—especially in a place like Nolita—you never know what you’re going to find.” Her love of all things New York, is so deeply rooted that she couldn’t possibly live anywhere else: “I was just in Capri a few weeks ago—I loved it—it’s so elegant, chic and everyone is so put together. But, everybody looks the same; all the guys wore the same kind of clothing. It’s a very monotonous visual. In New York, you can’t possibly imagine all these different types coexisting. You never get bored; it’s so dynamic. I’ve traveled all over the world and I don’t see characters as interesting as in New York.” When asked about what she wishes to accomplish with her career, she reflects and answers: “My dream is to be able to promote a message of honesty whether with music or in anything that I’m doing. I don’t think to be a role model you have to be perfect. I’ve been very honest with the press, even when I had work done on my face. A lot of people would cover that up. I want to be a voice for young women. I want to empower them—I’ve been through a lot—and I want to send them a relatable message. Regardless of who your parents are, where you come from or what you look like—you can embrace your flaws and be honest with yourself. We’re not living in a time where that’s really possible— there’s a lot of pressure on young women. We need more honest women who are willing to talk about their struggles.”

And with that, Alexa Ray and I conclude the interview. Clearly, here is a woman with passion and zest for life. But, beyond that, here is a woman who is strong, eloquent and most evidently on the road to major success. We wish her luck on her journey and we’re glad to call her one of our own.

The Triple Crown is the winning of The Kentucky a horse before. Baffert has been known to give him a kiss, and thanks Derby, The Preakness Stakes and The Belmont Stakes. Old Belmont Park him for coming through. “We’ve had a lot of good horses,” Baffert has had been left without a legend for 37 years. When it became clear the drought was It has been said there is no secret so close as that between a rider and about to end, the cheers became deafening as American Pharoah ran for his horse. Victor Espinoza, American Pharoah’s jockey on that magical glory down the long withering stretch of Belmont Park, as the crowd was day is, at 43, is the oldest Jockey to win the Triple Crown. O

Photos by Benno Klandt I met with Ashley and Justin Zayat, two of Ahmet Zayat’s four children, at Belmont Park in Elmont, in early June, shortly after the Belmont stakes was run. The joy of history being made was still felt in the air. Justin, who studied economics at NYU, works hand in hand with his dad at their Hackensack, New Jersey office. The 23 year old is the racing manager of Zayat Stables, with huge responsibilities. He chooses the races, buys horses, works with the trainers and pays the bills. Justin has been involved in Zayat stables since its inception in 2005, and now manages more than a dozen grade one winners. Speaking about American Pharoah’s victory the young entrepreneur said, “I couldn’t believe my eyes! He did what we all expected from him, and hoped he would do.” He is continued to be wowed by American Pharoah…wowed every time he runs. Justin explained that he always puts the horse first, and it shows given Zayat Stable’s amazing track record. Zayat says the champion knows who is, and loves the attention he gets. “Twenty or thirty years from now people will still ask about American Pharoah.” As an 8th grader in 2005, Ashley Zayat’s first thought on her fathers purchase of 18 horses was, “What the hell is my dad doing?” Ahmet Zayat was an investment banker, and owner of a beverage company, thinking of retiring, but instead, he decided to go into horse racing. Today the business has become a family affair from beginning to end. Ashley told me the family names the horses

for inspiring figures, events, and things that mean something. She describes it as being, “Like naming a baby, a lot of responsibility.” But Ashley, who resides in Miami FL, is a success in her own rite. In 2014, she started a jewelry line called “Point Ashley.” After attending NYU, and working in finance, the young woman decided to live her own dream. Ashley is passionate about her line, stating the collection is, “A romantic interpretation, inspired by graceful horses galloping through landscapes.” The flowing interlocking filaments in silver and gold echo the strength and timeless motion of a horse’s stride. Ashley sees her collection for the unconventional, unorthodox free spirit. Already on her third collection, the big one, as she calls it, is appropriately named the “Triple Crown Collection,” released in May 2015, and inspired by American Pharoah. Ashley’s goal was to melt her two passions together… horse racing and jewelry. So it seems that everything was aligned on that beautiful day in June at our very own Belmont Park. The majestic beauty, power and efficiency of a horse named American Pharoah, along with the athleticism of the jockey Victor Espinoza, the consummate talent of Bob Baffert, combined with the expertise, hard work, and dedication of the Zayat family was the recipe for perfection feeding America’s love affair with horse racing. It seems to be true that horses are divine mirrors… they reflect back the emotions you put in. August 2015 | 67

Galli LES A Worthy Italian Addition

L

By Sara Sherman

ocated on 98 Rivington Street in New York City, Italian restaurant Galli LES, offers elegant scenery, refreshing cocktails and hearty Italian meals. Guests have the pleasure of relaxing, in the luxurious, sunlight dining room, while enjoying an appetizing meal. The restaurant features a marble designed bar, where guests can rejoice and socialize over specialty drinks and appetizers. This comforting venue provides more then an outstanding menu, but also a soothing atmosphere, compelling individuals to come back for more. The head chef and co-owner Steven Gallo, is passionate about how his mouth-watering recipes are prepared. Gallo is not a stranger in the kitchen. He grew up in an Italian family, working jobs from busboy to cook, to working the pizza counter in his family’s restaurant. Before opening up his own restaurant, Gallo had a vision to combine Italian comfort food, based on cuisine that he learned from his family’s restaurant, but also incorporating the new era; giving people an authentic yet familiar feeling experience. The family oriented, Steven Gallo also collaborated with his wife, Karen, over the interior design of the venue. Karen who is a creative consultant and fashion stylist, designed the place with Italian marble, modern brick walls, large comfortable booths, high ceilings, pink neon signs, and one communal table, all under a beautiful glass roof. The modern decor of the venue, is just the vibe Gallo wanted customers to feel, while enjoying classic Italian food. Steven’s secret for making such exquisite dishes on the menu? He uses the

freshest of local and organic ingredients to craft the tomato sauce, salads, pasta, and meat dishes. The menu has starters such as baked clams, fritto misto, mozzarella chips, parm or burger sliders, tegamino, and polipo. Starters also consist of three soups and eight salads to choose from. The kale salad happens to be extremely popular, containing fresh oranges, almonds, avocado, carrots, and orange olive oil. The menu also has fulfilling chicken and meatball parm entrees, and eight gourmet sandwiches to choose from. With over fifteen scrumptious pasta dishes to pick from, Galli offers significant Italian dishes such as penne alla vodka with prosciutto, Bolognese with meat sauce, classic spaghetti and meatballs, fresh mozzarella, pomodoro, basil, etc. Galli also provides a delicious selection of ten main courses; featuring high-end chicken, veal and fish dishes. Steven Gallo’s hard work in the restaurant business has certainly paid off. From using ancient recipes, which have been around for a hundred years, Gallo succeeds in providing authentic Italian cuisine, for the hungry New Yorker. Given the hip and modern atmosphere, along with the wide variety of Italian comfort food, Galli is definitely worth checking out.

o ya nyc

At the Summit of Sushi

f you were to be told that the best Japanese restaurant in NYC was helmed and owned by a Caucasian couple, would you believe it? Well, its true. Tim and Nancy Cushman, executive chef and master sommelier of o ya Boston have brought their award-winning concept to the beautiful island of Manhattan. And we couldn’t be happier!

consumes you. The aura is breathtaking and the ambiance of the entire space perfectly blends with the menu of the restaurant. The interior zen space is lined with brick and stained wood accents. The environment in o ya is sleek and sophisticated. However, unlike most sushi bars, will also make you feel cozy and comfortable.

This husband and wife team is the reason for all the success o ya has garnered. Tim runs the kitchen and creates dishes inspired by Japanese tradition but enhances them by adding his own touch. While Nancy is responsible for the impeccable sake list.

There are currently two Omakase options to choose from; an 18- course or 24-course dinner innovatively created to perfection. With an attentive and accommodating staff, a dinner here is guaranteed to be like no other. The presentation of each dish is thought out to every last detail. The courses range from oysters to lobster and then to different types of fish, exquisite foie gras and chanterelle mushrooms. The choice of garnish and sauce paired with each dish meshes deliciously.

Located inside Gramercy’s Park South Hotel this elegant lean space has New Yorkers raving. From the moment you step into the restaurant there is an overwhelming feeling of joy that 78 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The 24-Course Chef’s choice starts off with Kumamoto Oyster with ponzu watermelon pearls and a cucumber mignonette. With its tangy taste it is very much a crowd pleaser. All the fish selections are of the best quality. For example, the Himachi with banana pepper and kohada black olive puree is a standout. Each dish is truly phenomenal and unique in it’s own way, which makes it hard to pick just a few that are unforgettable – as they all were! The Wild Spot Prawns with ramp butter and a dash of yuzu tobiko give the dish a dazzling yellow color. It's topped off with preserved lemon - one of the combinations o ya is known for. For the vegetarian selection the grilled chanterelle and shiitake mushrooms provided the most flavor that one can receive from

just a bite-sized item. The rosemary garlic oil and sesame froth set this dish over the top. For dessert, the last dish served, is a simple yet delicious sweetened tart combination of summer berries and a soba buckwheat honey ice cream with lavender. o ya is simply a must go and something one must experience for oneself. Words cannot explain how truly innovative and indulgent each dish is. The price for these modestly portioned dishes is high, but the quality is well worth it. You will leave the restaurant in total awe of the experience you just encountered. 22 E 28th Street New York, NY 10016 212.204.0200 o-ya.restaurant/o-ya-nyc August 2015 | 79

A

s summer heats up, people want to cool down with a frozen treat. Ice pops never go out of style, but some store-bought pops contain additives and preservatives. A great way to avoid artificial ingredients is to create your own; they’re fun to make and you can feel good about eating them. This allows you to control the ingredients while customizing them for your palate. There are different bases you can create your pops with. For a traditional ice pop, use a fruit juice base, such as white grape juice, pureed watermelon or orange juice. Cut pieces of fruit or puree a combination of fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and mango and add them to the mixture. If it’s too tart, add cane sugar, agave syrup or a substitute like Truvia to sweeten it.

As a bonus, fill ice trays with the leftover mixture– it’s the perfect summer cocktail ingredient that adds flavor while cooling a drink. You can also pour excess mixture into a Pyrex container and scrape into cups, similar to granita, a delicious, refreshing Italian dessert. Other bases include yogurt, ice cream and pudding, which provide a creamier texture. Yogurt freezes very well and can be combined in a blender with fruit and pureed. Customizable ice cream pops provide options that are less popular in the supermarket, such as dairy-free. You can also use pudding as your base – it’s delicious and a favorite for kids. Add fresh fruit, or extra sweet treats like peanut butter chips or chocolate chips.

Once you create your mixture, you need to freeze the pops. If you don’t own molds, Dixie cups or muffin tins work great. Stores like Bed Bath & Beyond and Williams-Sonoma sell standard pop molds, but for more creative options, websites like Tovolo.com and SiliKoMart.com have fun-shaped molds. Everyone loves a summertime frozen treat, and there’s no need to buy them when you can make delicious pops at home and put your own signature on them. Keep them in the freezer for your family or serve them as dessert at a party – they bring out the kid in everyone and are a delicious way to finish off a summer barbeque. Your family and friends will thank you!

Manhattan Moonshine Brings its Whiskey Revolution to Montauk

W

By Salome Langvin

ith cocktail culture booming in the United States, there is certainly no shortage of Speakeasies and high-end mixology bars in New York City, but what some of the best ones have in common is a revolutionary new un-aged Whiskey called Manhattan Moonshine. The spirit, which is shaking up the industry, is the world’s first luxury un-aged whiskey and has been developed to be the ultimate whiskey for cocktails. Manhattan Moonshine is rapidly emerging as a number one choice for the discerning drinkers of New York. Available for purchase across Manhattan the spirit has partaken in the Hamptons scene this summer. New Yorkers who yearn for the spirit can find it on Long Island’s East End exclusively at the Montauk Yacht Club, with plans to expand into the various villages in the South Fork next season. As mixologists continue to push the envelope with wilder cocktail ingredients and combinations and as more and more consumers begin to explore Whiskey, a need has arisen for an approachable, versatile Whiskey that delivers Whiskey’s naturally sweet, grain forward flavor to an ever expanding array of cocktails. Enter Manhattan Moonshine, which because it is not aged in barrels, it does not have the heavier barrel flavors like Oak and Smoke that make Aged Whiskeys less approachable and harder to mix. This means that Manhattan Moonshine can be used in an almost endless variety of cocktails, using flavors and ingredients that

82 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

no Aged Whiskey can mix with. These range from traditional ingredients such as grapefruit juice or tonic water to more exotic ingredients such as lavender, black walnut peel, or saffron. For Manhattan Moonshine, the quality of craftsmanship is paramount. Whereas other moonshines are made by following traditional Aged-Whiskey or Bourbon recipes and excluding the final step of barrel aging, the recipe for Manhattan Moonshine was developed from the outset to create an Un-Aged Whiskey. The formula was carefully created during a year of experimentation by Manhattan Moonshine Founder and CEO, William Kehler, and Master Distiller and author, Ian Smiley, who literally wrote the book on moonshine. The result of this work is a unique grain bill featuring a combination of Oats, Rye, Spelt (an ancestral form of wheat) and Malted Barley, and a unique production process. With its unique grain bill and production process, Manhattan Moonshine is able to deliver a smooth, grain-forward, Whiskey flavor that no other Un-Aged Whiskey is able to create, and the versatility that this creates is what has enabled it to quickly become a serious player in the New York cocktail scene. Manhattan Moonshine launched in late last year in its unmistakable 750 ml Art Deco decanter, at an MSRP of $49.99. manhattan-moonshine.com

LaSource Grenada

Luxury Sandals Escape on the Island of Spice

W

by Lavanya Sunkara

ith scenic cliffs stretching towards tranquil, turquoise Caribbean waters, lush mountains in the distance, and bright hillside villas overlooking pristine, horseshoe shaped Pink Gin Beach, Sandals LaSource Grenada Resort & Spa is simply divine. This brand new, all-inclusive resort offers luxurious accommodations, nine culinary experiences, a spa, and butler service that earn the property accolades as one of the top-five resorts in the Caribbean. Just minutes from the airport, Sandals LaSource is the perfect origin to experience the wonders of the Spice Isle. My getaway began on an early Thursday morning when I boarded JetBlue’s inaugural, direct flight to Grenada. Upon arrival, I was immediately taken by the people’s pride in their country, culture, and their vibrant dancing. I was impressed by the genuine smiles of everyone I met, from the Grenadians onboard the flight to the tourism board officials who greeted us at the airport. The resort managers and staff were no less generous and attentive. From the caring woman who served hot breakfast at Spices Restaurant and the doting concierge who ensured that my luggage arrived safely in my suite, to the receptionist who set up the Wi-Fi, I felt well taken care of. Accommodations at this adults-only resort are located in three distinct villages. The Italian Village features Sandals’ signature Skypool Suites with infinity edge plunge pools, offering impressive views of the Caribbean. Ultra-luxurious Rondovals with private pools are situated in the South Seas

Village atop rolling hills, perfect for honeymooners and couples seeking privacy. The steps from the ocean view suites in Pink Gin Village lead directly to hammocks swaying under palm trees and the cool Caribbean waters. With five pools and extensive water sports, I had a hard time determining the best way to relax; I eventually settled on the swim-up bar where I sipped daiquiris and made friends. Couples snuggled poolside by the romance of the fire pits. As the day wound down, a bridal party from the Southwestern United States was getting down at the poolside party to live music as traditional dancers got the crowd moving and men on stilts prepped for their act. During my short stay, I developed a routine of visiting the tiny thatched roof Cat Café to check on the lounging resident felines as I made my way to the Spices Caribbean Cuisine restaurant for a delicious buffet breakfast. There was never any shortage of places to dine, from Japanese cuisine at Kimonos to Italian fare at Cucina Romana, which serves the best pizza (and I’m a New Yorker!). After a mouthwatering meal of savory artichoke-filled crêpes and Gâteau au Chocolat Sans Farine for dessert at the garden themed French restaurant, Le Jardinier, I headed to the open-air Living Room lounge area to burn off the calories dancing to the latest beats. Surprisingly, when I returned to my suite, I heard nothing but crashing waves.

Although there are many ways to stay occupied on property, Grenada has numerous natural and manmade attractions that deserve exploring. My first stop was Fort Frederick, a relic built by the French in the 18th Century. Perched atop Richmond Hill, the fort affords breathtaking, panoramic views of the Capital, Grand Anse Beach, Point Salines, and the mountains of central Grenada. With blossoming Flamboyant trees beckoning me at its entrance, a couple of adorable dogs running up the stairs of the fort, and the trade winds blowing, it was well worth the uphill trip to reach this pinnacle. Grenada offers myriad opportunities for nature lovers and thrill seekers. From river tubing down the Balthazar and hiking in the rainforest to swimming in the refreshing pools of the Seven Sisters waterfalls in the island’s central highlands, I was in awe of the serene beauty. When I arrived at Adventure Tours Grenada, I had no idea about the fun that awaited. Within minutes, I was bouncing down the river, turning corners over gushing whitewater, shrieking with joy every time I made a successful turn without flipping over – which I never really feared, given the amount of attention with which the guides showered us. The refreshingly strong rum punch served afterwards heighted the adrenaline rush and brought a smile to everyone’s faces. Speaking of rum, I was glad I wasn’t the one driving when we made the trek up winding roads along the rugged northeastern coast to visit the oldest water-propelled rum facility in the Caribbean: the River Antoine Rum Distillery. This rum producer dates back to 1785 and has used the same process for

more than a century. Devoted employees crush bundles of sugarcane in antiquated machines, place them on the island's only railway truck, on the only railway line, for the short trip where the cane is dried under the sun. Cane juice is filtered and delivered to the main building, where it is ladled in massive metal basins, until it is brought to a boil and sent to ferment and then be distilled. Though the strong scent of fermenting juice can be a bit intoxicating, I left the tour with a new appreciation for the process; I also earned bragging rights for trying some seriously strong rum, produced in strengths of 138 and 150-proof that can’t be brought on the plane. (Don’t worry, a less potent version is sold for your drinking pleasure at home.) Rum and river tubing aside, a trip to Grenada isn’t complete without snorkeling or diving to see the world’s first marine sculpture garden at Molinere Sculpture Park. Just a half hour boat ride from LaSource Sandals ushered me to a collection of ecological, subaqueous art that sits on the sandy bottom of Molinere Bay. Dipping my head underwater to witness these cement sculptures, including the famous ring of children holding hands, was a memory I’ll always cherish. With coral reefs making the structures their home, schools of fish circling around us, and the bright tropical fish weaving their way through the individual sculptures inspired by the island’s colorful history, culture, and folklore, it’s a scene one could only witness in Grenada.

North by Newcastle A New Look at the Northern Coast of England

T

By Janis Turk

wice each day the tide sweeps in from the North Sea, covering an ancient causeway leading to Holy Island. There off the northeastern coast of England, a medieval castle perched high above the waves on a volcanic rock cliff stands near a tiny village and the stone ruins of a 12th-century priory built on the site of a 7th-century Anglo Saxon monastery. As the tide rises, thousands of seals lie in a great line along a slim sandbar, barking and flapping their fins, appearing to applaud as the sea overtakes the land. Water envelops the island, cutting it off from the outside world for the next five hours, and from a distance it seems as though a fairytale castle has risen from the mist, shrouded in sea foam and mystery. Just a few miles down the coastline, another regal fortress, Bamburgh Castle, stands on a hill edged by a small beach. From there, roads shouldered by fields of purple heather dip between deep hills, enchanted Robin Hood-style evergreen forests, and wild craggy Brontë-esque moors. Fields dotted by sheep are bound by low stone walls—some are even the Roman remains of Hadrian’s Wall. At nearby Alnwick Castle, children don the costumes of knights and princess and play at sword fighting in the very fields where Harry Potter learned to fly on a broomstick. If this is the England you long to see—a mystical Camelot-like country found only in books and films, you’ll find it in the Northumberland region 92 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

of northeastern England. Best of all, getting there is simple, since this summer United Airlines just opened a direct, nonstop flight from New York. With a short six-hour hour flight from Newark to Newcastle on Tyne (population about 250K), travelers can land in the pulsing heart of Northumbria, avoiding the madding crowds of London airports and landing in a land of enchantment. A good jumping-off point for a journey through Northern England is centrally located Hotel Indigo, a boutique property offering guests comfortable rooms with bold contemporary design. It’s also a good choice as it’s home to the steakhouse, bar and grill of celebrity chef Marco Pierre White—a restaurant popular with Geordies (as Newcastle residents are called) and hotel guests, alike. Don’t be in a rush to head north just yet: there’s much to do and see in Newcastle and its sister city Gateshead, just across the River Tyne. Begin your English adventure with a heritage, history and culture walking tour led by a friendly local guide who will meet you at your hotel. Newcastle is probably best known for once being home to coal mining, ship building and railroads, along with the world-famous Newcastle beer once brewed here; however, these days that’s all gone, and it’s not some gritty industrial place. Today, it is an architecturally arresting, modern city that’s home to ancient castle ruins, large churches, green parks, town squares and

statues, and seven bridges crossing the River Tyne. Stroll along the curved London-like Grey Street and see the ornate Theatre Royal, and visit traditional pubs in Newcastle, but the most impressive attraction in town is the Gateshead Millennium “blinking bridge,” which uses hydraulic engines to hoist up its pedestrian walkway allowing boats to pass. For a great lunch stop, visit The Herb Garden, Newcastle’s newest pizza kitchen, with space-age-style orb greenhouses herb gardens. For a dynamic dinner with an incredible view, dine at SIX, a bright fresh fine dining eatery on the sixth floor of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, offering panoramic views of the color-changing Millennium Bridge. Crossing the broad sandy causeway to ancient Lindisfarne, known as “Holy Island,” you enter an island that is twice-daily set apart from rest of the world by fast-moving tides. Both island and picturesque village, Lindisfarne carries a wealth of history hidden within its tidal walls. There guests can visit Lindisfarne Castle and the Lindisfarne Priory, enjoy little tea rooms and shops, and taste Lindisfarn Mead, a sweet local wine made from honey. Then hurry to the mainland before the tide turns for lunch at The Barn at Beal cafe, and watch from the window as water covers the road behind you. Next, stop and tour Bamburgh Castle. Spanning nine acres on its rocky plateau above the coastline, it once was home to the kings of ancient Northumbria and is one of northeast England’s most iconic buildings, with parts dating back to the 12th century. From there ride past dramatic hillside scenery to the tiny village of Rothbury on the outskirts of the Northumberland National Park. The River Coquet runs through the village beside a small churchyard with old moss and vine-covered headstones. Enjoy a local brew at an old-style English pub like “Turk’s Head” and spend the night at the little Queen’s Head Hotel, a traditional pub/inn with an exceptional fine dining restaurant downstairs.

A favorite destination for visitors is always Alnwick Castle, one of the largest inhabited castles in England, owned by the same family for 700-plus years. The castle is often used as a film location, but it's best known as the setting for Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films, the movies ”Elizabeth” (with Cate Blanchett) and “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (Kevin Costner), as well as the 2014 Christmas episode of Downton Abbey, and many other shows. Last month the Downton Abbey cast filmed another episode in the state rooms (watch next season when the family visits a place they call Brancaster Castle). Called the “Windsor of the North,” Alnwick Castle was built as a medieval fortress but today welcomes guests for tours in spring and summer. I could spend an entire day at Alnwick Garden amid its tall bamboo labyrinths, fragrant colorful rose gardens, spraying fountains, manicured hedges, arched walkways shrouded by flowers and thick vines. Stay in a Downton Abbey-type mansion at Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa, a resort estate about 15 miles west of Newcastle on Tyne. A hotel since 1999, it was named the 2015 Large Hotel of the Year by the Visit England Awards for Excellence. A stately mansion set amid 300 acres of park beside a little village, Matfen Hall has 53 bedrooms (many with views of the grounds and gardens), a 27-hole course, par 3 course and driving range, and a large spa, fitness center and heated pool. With such rare treasures and beauty at every turn, there are so many reasons to travel north by Newcastle.

The Ritz-Carlton, battery park Luxury on the Hudson

T

By Lisa Loverro

he Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park is a special hotel tucked away down on the southern tip of the Big Apple. My brief but thoroughly enjoyable visit here reminded me of how much this city has to offer and made me wonder why I hadn’t sought out this hotel sooner. Nearly half of their 298 guest rooms offer exquisite views of the harbor with the iconic Statue of Liberty occupying center stage. In-room telescopes provide up close and personal views of the lovely Lady, perfectly positioned directly on her for your first look-through. The contemporary furnishings and decor of the hotel are characteristically Ritz Carlton along with their alwaysattentive service and immaculate accommodations. The fitness center is more than adequate for a hotel of this size and their fine dining restaurant, 2West, located in hotel lobby serves American cuisine in a friendly and welcoming vibe. What I found particularly stellar was their Club Lounge serving light bites for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. And since the hotel 98 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

caters to a business crowd, my weekend escape meant I had the lounge almost completely to myself each time I visited. During a stay down at Battery Park City, there are plenty of options to take advantage of, some of which many native New Yorkers may have not yet experienced. The Museum of American Indian, The Holocaust Museum, walking tours of the Financial District and one of the most enjoyable, a Sunday brunch cruise or sunset sail on the Hudson, via one of the many sailboats leaving from the nearby North Cove Marina pier. The hotel is also conveniently located nearby to the Staten Island Ferry for a quick hop over to Staten Island. Ideal for not only a free viewing of the Statue of Liberty but also for a trip to the recently opened Dairy Queen—the first in New York City! As it turns out, The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park offers one of the best staycation experiences in New York City. ritzcarlton.com

Irina Lebedeva A Prima Ballerina

I

By Carla Hall D'Ambra

rina Lebedeva is a ballerina. From the top of her head, down to her toes, Irina exudes the poise and beauty of the classical ballet dancer. When Irina enters the room, it’s with graceful, fluid movement, as if she’s floating. Her voice is soft and melodic, and the accent is undeniably Russian.

Irina Lebedeva is one of the North Shore’s treasures. As artistic director of Long Island Ballet Academy in Sea Cliff, Irina shares her vast talent, experience and art with her students, both children and adults, teaching Vaganova method of classical ballet. The Vaganova method has become the foremost Russian technique, based on a grading system, and many famous ballet dancers including Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, have trained in this method. On a sunny, summer afternoon, we sit outside in my garden, and Irina is in awe of the butterflies around us. She notes how beautiful they move and flutter, and as she speaks of the soft yellowness of this flying insect, she moves her hands softly, with a slight twirl from the wrist and for a moment, she becomes the butterfly, and I am in awe. Irina was born in Siberia and started dancing at five years old. When she was nine she moved away from home to begin training for professional dancing at the Perm Ballet Academy in the city of Perm. In order to study at this prestigious school, an audition was required. For each available spot, 250 children auditioned, 25 were chosen and Irina was one of them. Her first teacher, Antonina, loved Irina, and she told Irina’s parents that Irina was gifted and special. 100 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

When she was eleven, Irina was awarded a more than perfect grade score of 5 ½ at Perm Ballet Academy where the highest grade possible was 5. She was the first student to be offered an extra two years of study before moving on to the professional dance company. Because the government paid for the dance education, her parents were thrilled and extremely proud of this honor for their daughter. The professional company was also fighting to bring Irina in, but Irina chose to accept the two additional years of ballet training. “You fall in love, and it’s a tragedy if you can’t continue,” says Irina, “when you fall in love with performing.” And indeed, Irina was in love with dance, and began performing professionally in Russia and around the world. She danced principal parts early on, skipping the corps de ballet after breaking her toe while dancing with the corps. Irina laughs and admits that she and some of her fellow dancers were known as “spoiled” because they trained hard and they liked the “star” treatment. Her favorite roles are in the ballets Romeo & Juliet and Swan Lake. As Irina developed as a dancer and artist, she felt she didn’t have the freedom of expression she so longed for while living in Russia. With each trip out into the world, Irina dreamt of being free. On one specific occasion, her dance company was coming to the United States. At first Irina was told she would not be included in the trip, but at the last minute, her director told her to pack her bags and be ready “just in case.” In the final hours, Irina received a call that she would, after all, be going, to the United States. This was the trip that forever changed her life. Irina arrived in America, she danced, and she defected.

Irina Lebedeva and partner, Andrei Bossov

Irina was one of the last persons to defect from Russia before the Peristroika and before the Berlin wall came down. When she finally got to New York and felt safe, she began to carve out her new life. In New York, Irina reached out to Mikhail Baryshnikov, and he asked her, “Where do you want to work?” Irina told him, “Anywhere I can stay in shape.” He liked that answer and helped Irina find her classes and eventually get back to work. Irina’s first job in the United States was with a ballet company in Buffalo, New York. After years of concentrated performing, Irina began teaching as well. While still living in New York City, she and fellow defector and dancer Andrei Bossov opened a cultural center in Waterville, Maine, where the two performed and taught together for fifteen years. Eight years ago Irina bought a beautiful, spacious studio, LI Ballet Academy, in Sea Cliff, where she now teaches children and adults classical ballet, and where she rehearses her productions. Today, Irina is focused on teaching and giving to her students. With her young students, her philosophy is that “whatever you offer them, they will get it. Ballet is a difficult art, and it is hard, but children are strong.” As we sit under the patio umbrella on this summer day, Irina tells me, “Children need freedom. When children are free to try things, and not be afraid, they grow.” She mentions that years after her defection, she has seen her fellow dancers from Russia and their response is always, “You are my hero, Irina. I didn’t have the courage to do what you did.” Irina assures me that she never had one moment of thinking she’d done the wrong thing

by defecting as she did, and coming to the United States. Currently, Irina also teaches ballet to adults at her studio, and has found that ballet is therapeutic for adults. “Ballet training gives you everything,” she states, “and it prepares you for the day and it makes you strong. The music and the movements keep your mind sharp.” According to Irina, it is never too late to begin dancing, and enjoy the benefits of adult ballet, even if you have never had dance training. She teaches adult morning classes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10:30am – 12noon. Irina’s ballet students are now winning scholarships and some are dancing professionally. It makes Irina happy to see her students dancing out in the world. One of her students recently said to her, “Miss Irina, you made me stronger.” Irina is looking forward to producing The Nutcracker this winter, and she often has guest artists from the Bolshoi, Kremlin, and Moscow Ballets during the summer months teaching master classes at her Sea Cliff studio. As we take a walk through my garden after our interview, Irina says, “I want to take off my shoes and feel the grass.” We remove our shoes and the lush, thick grass feels heavenly on our bare feet. She tells me she was always running and dancing in barefoot as a child back home in Siberia. She says in her beautiful Russian accent, “The grass is wonderful. There’s so much energy coming up from the earth. It’s good for us, you know?” For more information: LIBalletAcademy@aol.com | 516-801-4393 August 2015 | 101

Nadia Gallagher And Her Modern Artwork By Sara Sherman

he very gifted Nadia Gallagher, is a freelance artist and designer with a captivating collection of beautiful sketches. From an early age, Nadia was very passionate about art. One of the murals have texture elements, that stick out from the mural surface, some decorative parts were glued to the wall and painted over. Nadia did this, to express her creativity verses sticking to traditional mural painting. She is a remarkable young woman with a wonderful portfolio, anyone with good taste, would want her work hanging on their walls!

Behind the Six-Million Dollar Cash Haul that Shook the World

S

By Melissa Rose

ince being memorialized in Martin Scorsese’s classic gangster film “Goodfellas,” co-authors Henry Hill and Daniel Simone recount the daring armed robbery that rocked Kennedy Airport on December 11, 1978, as organized by the late Henry Hill himself. Hill and Simone give their readers neverbefore-revealed details that can only be known to an insider. The heist, as explained in the novel, has baffled the police for years and is known today as the largest unrecovered cash haul in history—totaling six million dollars, including 380 thousand dollars in jewels. The heist has been buzzing in the news and all over social media, continuing its legendary run in history, with mobsters recently getting arrested for being in connection with the heist, and only a small part of the money recovered. The novel, published by Lyons Press in August 2015, is based on interviews with Hill before his death in 2012. He talks of Kennedy Airport as “their own private bank” and “the answer to all our problems.” With the support of the Mafia families, Luccheses and Gambino, Jimmy “the Gent” Burke, and his protégé, Henry Hill, carry out the heist, making a mockery of the law enforcement by successfully hiding the whereabouts of the money and only arresting Hill for narcotics, but desperate to achieve freedom, he decides to help the police solve the crime. With this shocking twist, Hill must find how to achieve not only protection from facing incarceration, but also protection against the wrath of Burke, who will do anything to maintain his own innocence.

108 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The two must decide whether or not will stay partners or cooperate with the police to ensure their freedom. Hill under the protection of solitary confinement prevents being murdered by Burke, as he did to the other thirteen accomplices in the heist to avoid suspicion. By being under the protection of the police, Hill helps the prosecutors convict Burke and other high-ranking Mafia members. The novel tells of how much Hill was tangled up in the mess that the heist created. At first they were rolling in money, they had never done a job on such a grand scale before. But as the murders by Jimmy "the Gent" Burke, and Tommy DeSimone to keep things quiet, Hill “…knew [that he was] going to get whacked and it came pretty close. So it was either [him] or them.” Hill knew down the line that his time as part of the Mafia served no honor; he even called himself a rat. Readers can feel the high that they felt from the Heist, the fear that Hill felt later on for his life and the justice that Hill served the police by putting Burke away. Hill entered the Federal Witness Protection Program in 1980 and assisted the government in building cases against forty-six top Mafia associates. He collaborated with author Nick Pileggi, on his novel Wiseguy, based off of the Heist, and then consulted on “Goodfellas.” This novel was the last project he worked on before his death. Daniel Simone has co-written biographies and has published pieces on prominent figures in fiction, film and theater.
