Publisher’s Note

May flowers! It’s getting warmer and so are our pages. We are so proud of the progress we’ve made with our content offerings, design and overall flow of the book. I hope you’ve seen an improvement and we promise to continue to produce the best magazine in the New York Media market. This month, for our Spring Issue, we’ve got great features on Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee and Dr. Konstantinos Zarkadas, a leading pioneer (and the only medically staffed office in Long Island) of cryotherapy. The Donald, as he’s become known, wasn’t the obvious choice for Republican frontrunner, but through hard work, a consistent message that resonated with millions and an ability to gain a HUGE amount of media coverage he has become a household phenomenon, on the precipice of changing American politics. As mentioned previously, we also feature Dr. Zarkadas, the leading figure on Long Island for cryotherapy, a new treatment that helps with inflammation and pain. The technology, developed in Japan, popular in Europe for years, has only just caught on on the West and East Coasts in the States; Dr. Zarkadas is at the forefront of this life-changing treatment. We are also happy to present Nori Ingochi, one of the world’s (yes world’s) leading still-life photographers. This month he shoots handbags featuring Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton. As always, we’ve got fashion covered. This month it’s all about pink! What a great color for spring. Travel (we covered lots of Italy and Thailand), dining, health and art are all featured this month. We are proud sponsors of Hamptons Contemporary, a new concept from Rick Friedman, the art fair guru of the Hamptons. It will be hosted at the Southampton Elks Fairgrounds from June 3-5. We’d love to see you there! We know that there are other publications in the NYC and Long Island markets, so we thank you for your loyalty – we hope you love the magazine as much as we love putting it together. We are blessed to have the best writers and readers in the world!

Photo Shoots on the Gold Coast

B

Story and Photos by Monica Randall

ack in the early ’60s, the Gold Coast as a location site for filming and fashion shoots was an untapped resource that no one knew existed. It’s true that one of Hollywood’s most beloved films, Sabrina(1953), had been shot at several old estates in Glen Cove, and North by North West, starring Cary Grant was filmed in 1959 at the still privately owned, Old Westbury Gardens. Photo ads and fashion layouts were still being shot in the city in large studios where set designers spent days building fake jungle sets and lavish interior rooms. I was a college student and part-time model at the time, but in an odd twist of fate was living at the infamous Woodward estate in Oyster Bay. Ann Woodward had just sold the sprawling property to Frank and Florence Norris, who spent every waking moment trying to hold the place together. The formal trellised gardens, though overgrown, were still breathtaking, along with the long allees of Cherry trees and clipped hedgerows. I would take the Oyster Bay train into the city and make the rounds of a struggling fashion model, hauling a heavy black leather case of photos that had to be updated with the constant changes that came with every season. Fashion photographers were often egotistical and impossible to deal with, and it was not easy to get tested or receive the beautiful glossy 11 x 14 prints that resulted from those photo tests. I had learned a lot about lighting, composition and angles from the truly great photographers like Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn and decided at some point I could do my own tests using an automatic timer that was on the vintage Rolleiflex camera I’d been using for years to document the doomed Gold Coast estates. Back then models could often borrow sample designer gowns from photo shoots and return them the next day. What began to set my expanding portfolio apart from everyone else were the shots I was taking in those beautiful Versailles-like gardens on our property, and many of the other estates in the surrounding area. I set up a darkroom in an old linen closet and made my own 11 x 14 prints. Soon the New York photographers were more interested in my background locations than my limited modeling skills. It didn’t take long to realize that the Gold Coast, though fading, was a gold mine. The Gold Coast Becomes the Film Capital on the East Coast It took several months to put a second binder together with all the North Shore estates that were willing to have their homes and gardens used for filming, along with a generous fee. Through a friend, I convinced the New York Post to run a story on my new location idea, and the phone rang off the hook from day one. Soon Vogue, Vanity Fair, Town & Country and Brides Magazine were thrilled to discover the breathtaking beauty of this lost world that F. Scott Fitzgerald made famous in his novel The Great Gatsby. Photographers fell in love with the ruins. They were enchanted by vines engulfing everything in sight. They saw poetry in toppled pillars, and grand Romanesque fountains topped with life-sized marble goddesses and sea serpents. Molding frescos inspired by those of Pompeii made unique backdrops for layouts with Paris gowns. At one

shoot a frothy tulle bridal gown was worn by a model galloping down an allee of Cherry trees on a white horse. It was a magical mystery tour and many of the city-based studios were discovering these grand estates for the first time, and it was all just forty minutes away. A Topic of Conversation It came as a surprise to find that even some of the best known and wealthiest families were thrilled to see their properties featured in magazines and TV commercials, with many of the handsome location fees going to their favorite charities. Stories about the ups and downs of filming and celebrity sightings became a hot topic of dinner conversations, and those not included often seemed envious. However, in the world of showbiz, and this was showbiz after all, weird and bizarre things were known to happen. The Czar Comes to Winfield During the ’70s, some of the most elaborate photo shoots ever staged anywhere were for the Wolfschmidt Vodka ads. The theme was Czarist Russia at the height of its golden age, which included over fifty extras in attendance at a grand ball. The production people wanted an elaborate marble palace with lavish interiors and sparkling crystal chandeliers. It didn’t take them long to decide on Winfield in Glen Cove, as it was the only marble palace left standing on the Gold Coast. The Czar, an actor who looked like Clark Gable with a beard, was dressed in a red custom-made Russian military uniform, lavished with gold braiding and applets. His Empress glittered, in a silk ball gown, beaded with diamonds and pearls and wore an authentic crown. The production people had done their research and made every effort to re-create historical events, which included the Czar returning triumphant from battle and charging into the ballroom on a white horse, yelling “Hi, I’m back.” Of course, it was said in Russian. Also in attendance were two royal snowy white Russian wolfhounds, Jasmin and Frosty. They were driven to the set in their own white van and were so high-strung and fragile, they came with their own pet psychiatrist, in case their acting job of standing there looking regal proved too much for them. The director, wanting to add a bit of whimsy to the image, decided to bring in a fog machine. The stage was set as hundreds of candles glowed on tall brass torchers, guests sipped vodka in gilt crystal goblets and the two wolfhounds stood at the Czarina’s side. When the Czar, on cue, came galloping in through the tall French doors, something went haywire with the fog machine. The room became so thick with vaporous mist the poor horse got spooked, and though we could not see what was happening, we could hear him running frantically around the room crashing into the potted palms, lights and shrieking extras. When the fog finally cleared, the horse stood frozen under the massive chandelier, and the Czar lay moaning on the floor, his royal uniform covered in horse droppings. The wolfhounds were cowering in the corner shaking uncontrollably, their glazed eyes bulging out of their heads. But, the vodka ads did become a huge success, and appeared in magazines all over the world. May 2016 | 23

The Versailles Style Trellised Gardens at the Former Woodword Estate The Spectacular Neptune Fountain Stands at the End of a Long Drive at the Former F.W. Woolworth in Oyster Bay Were Often Used as a Backdrop for Magazine Fashion Mansionin Glen Cove. Hundreds of Fashion Layouts Have Been Shot There Over the Years Layouts

Nudity and Snakes at a Local Monastery La Selva, built in 1918, by Frederick Wheeler who made his fortune in the canning industry, is a 60-room stucco Mediterranean-style villa in Oyster Bay. The sprawling estate had been used as a Catholic monastery for decades, and the dark-robed priests were very finicky about what could be filmed there. Everything had to be proper and tasteful, and the money raised from photo shoots always went to charities to help those in need, like pregnant nuns, or starving pigeons, (just kidding). While working for Vanity Fair I was asked to find a secluded, old-world Italianstyle garden with apple trees to depict a scene of Eve in the Garden of Eden. The estate, located across the road from the Planting Fields Arboretum, is surrounded by an eight-foot ivy-covered wall that made it an ideal location. The celebrated photographer, Annie Leibovitz decided it was perfect. The editorial was to feature supermodel Cindy Crawford, completely nude, but covered in all the right places with a trained tenfoot python. The overly friendly snake was getting paid $2,500 for the day. Talented pets are known to support their owners. My job, as the location manager, was to convince the head priest that a nude model standing in an apple orchard with a reptile slithering over her privates was appropriate behavior where the devout folks go to pray for their endless sins. I had known Brother Roman, the head priest for over thirty years and he trusted me, and knew I would never tell a lie so I said: “We will be re-creating a scene from the Bible that will prove inspirational to all who keep the faith.” And that was the truth. As a rule, production people never show up with only one talented pet, but several creatures to have as backup in case one of them is not in the mood to work. The animal model agency sent three ten- and twelve-foot pythons and assorted boas all of whom when they arrived at the estate were let out of their cages and allowed to frolic in the garden and eat whatever they might find tasty: squirrels, chipmunks, stray cats, whatever. When the photographer was ready to shoot, it was discovered that one of the reptiles was missing. A short time later we heard a blood-curdling 24 | 25A Black Market Issue

scream coming from the house. The snake had made his way into the chapel where an unsuspecting nun was doing signs of the cross. The snake’s name was Adam, and when his trainer called him he promptly returned to the set, slithered onto Cindy Crawford and smiled for the camera. The amazing photo appeared in the November issue of Vanity Fair in 1993, and was quite a hit with their readers. When the priests at the monastery got wind of it, I was asked to do ten thousand Hail Mary’s. I’m still working on it. Over the years just about every celebrity and film star has been photographed or filmed at one of these Long Island estate locations. I worked with Mariah Carey, who did her first music video, Emotion, at Malmaison in 1992, along with Demi Moore, Isabella Rossellini and Sarah Jessica Parker—who were also featured at the famed location for Vanity Fair. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt rented a mansion in Lloyd Neck, while filming the movie Salt a few years ago. Robert Redford was spotted in Locust Valley when several days of shooting took place at a nearby estate off Feeks Lane. Several estate locations were also used in the racy Martin Scorsese film, The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DeCaprio. Brides, Horses and Runaway Shoes Hundreds of bridal gown layouts have been shot at East Fair Castle, in Lloyd Harbor over the years. The Feudal-style castle was built by Sherman Fairchild, who brought most of it over from Europe and had it reconstructed on two hundred acres overlooking the Sound. It is one of the few fortresses on Long Island to have a moat. At one time the moat was filled with alligators swimming around in it during the summer months, but they were known to crawl out and terrorize guests and the neighbors. They have since been replaced with large goldfish. The estate also has a number of fine thoroughbred horses that are free to roam the open meadows and formal gardens.

An Original 1900 Gown was Photographed at Malmasion for a Book Cover

Modern Bride Magazine loved the place and its enchanting old-world charm. Over the past thirty years they’ve done hundreds of wedding layouts, one of them was for Dior shoes. The production people had brought a van full of the bridal shoes, and lined them up along the hedgerow in the formal garden. When the models and crew took a lunch break back at the house, they returned to find one of the horses munching on a $2000 pair of satin and diamond-studded shoes. Everyone panicked and tried chasing after the horse, but they were no match for the galloping steed who could run forty miles an hour. I’m sure the insurance company covered the loss, but I doubt they reported that a horse ate the shoes. Fashion ads continue to be photographed all over the North Shore, but not as much as in the past. Back in the day when budgets seemed to have no limits, it was not uncommon for me to be asked to rent a 200-foot yacht at $1,200 an hour, just to have it in the background for a fashion shoot on the beach. Many celebrities were flown to these estates in private helicopters

along with their personal make-up artists, and hairdressers. On one occasion, a supermodel stepped off the chopper with her pet monkey. Perhaps the most popular site for filming is Winfield, the former F. W. Woolworth estate in Glen Cove. Unfortunately, the sixty-room manor house has not been used since it caught fire last year. Though it is still standing, many of its gilded rooms are covered in soot and it will be some time before they are restored. Even with the gardens overgrown, the spectacular marble Neptune fountain, with its stone pink horses and dolphins, its soaring classic pillars and three-tiered staircase to the west remains a romantic reminder of the Belle Époque. Author’s notes: As with most of these feature stories, there is an illustrated slide show called “The Gold Coast in the Movies” available to libraries, clubs and anyone who fancies the subject. Donald TRUMP The Presidental Apprentice By Cat Andersen I“You’re fired.” When you hear those two words, it’s automatic; you hear these two as well: Donald Trump. “You’re fired” used to be a phrase that evoked a sickening dread from the pit of our stomach just thinking about it. A phrase we whispered superstitiously in fear that if we said it too loud it could eventually bounce back out of the mouths of our bosses back to us and ruin our bank accounts. But now, because of The Donald, we say it all the time in jest. Now, our first reaction is to picture the character we’ve come to know on The Apprentice, not getting the pink slip ourselves. Now, hearing “you’re fired” actually makes us smile (unless, of course, you are actually getting fired). Otherwise, the phrase is now, not only comical, it’s almost refreshing. We’ve come to appreciate how direct Donald Trump is and how clean he makes his cuts. Now Trump is running for President and whether you agree with his political platform or not, admit it, there’s a part of you that’s itching with curiosity to see how that kind of directness would play out with members of Congress and if clean cuts are actually possible in politics. Timing is everything and Trump’s couldn’t be better. We live in a time where ideas and messages are constantly blurred—diluted in fear of saying something that someone doesn’t like, whether it’s from behind a podium or in an office space. We all have concrete ideas, tangible paintbrushes ready to create but social norms allow us only to use watercolors that turn into cloudy puddles of color that are hard to define.

Enter Picasso: Donald Trump. What we’re seeing on his canvas is not symmetrical or charming or pretty. He doesn’t want it to be. He’s not using watercolors. His motif is striking and provocative and it has us all paying attention. Love him or hate him, he’s forced the indifference out of people. We now have family members, friends and co-workers who’ve never talked to us about politics before who are now, not only watching primary debates, they’re quoting them. And I repeat: These are the Primaries. Trump has lit a fire underneath people who’ve never cared to learn about the political process before. We’re watching him now for the same reason we watched him on The Apprentice. We can’t wait to hear what he’ll say next. Recently, Trump told his supporters in Wilkes-Barre during the Pennsylvania primary, “You’re going to say when you look back in five years and fifteen years and twenty-five years and hopefully in fifty years from now, that was the single greatest vote I ever cast.” If we heard anyone else, candidate or average citizen touting themselves so blatantly, we would be repulsed. With Trump, we’ve come to accept it as just his personality. Case in point, a quote he’s famous for: “My whole life is about winning.”

25A BLACK MARKET

Trump was born in Queens, New York to the millionaire builder and real estate developer Frederick Trump and his wife Mary McLeod and went to military school as a child. Donald was still in college when he joined his father’s business, which focused on middle-class rental properties in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. His father gave him a job managing an apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio and within four years after graduating from the Wharton School of Finance at the University Of Pennsylvania, Donald sold it, closing his first multimillion-dollar real estate transaction. He had already moved to Manhattan at that point, and was delving into higher-end real estate including turning the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into a new Grand Hyatt. By 1979, at the age of 33, Trump purchased an eleven-story property next door to the world-famous Tiffany and Company jewelry store in Midtown Manhattan and built one of Manhattan’s most iconic buildings, Trump Tower. The high-rise luxury property is Donald in building-form from floor to rooftop: Dramatic, angular, lavish and ear-popping. Soaring 664 feet into the world’s most famous skyline, Trump Tower became a status symbol soon after it opened as celebrities lined up to purchase residences at record-setting prices. At that point, not even the sky was the limit for Donald Trump: “Everything in the late seventies, mid-seventies and throughout the eighties was not a homerun but a grand slam. I mean, everything I touched turned to gold.” In 1985, he purchased the Barbizon-Plaza Hotel overlooking Central Park, renovated it and turned into luxury residences, and renamed it Trump Parc. To add even more prestige to his real estate portfolio, three years later, he bought another New York City landmark, the 37-story Plaza Hotel for $407 million dollars. In the meantime, he partnered with Holiday Inn to build the $250-milliondollar casino, Harrah’s at Trump Plaza. Four years later, he bought the Holiday right out of it and renamed it Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. He decided to double-down his investments in Atlantic City by purchasing Hilton Hotel’s $320-million-dollar casino-hotel and stamped it appropriately: Trump’s Castle. There’s a saying about building castles in the air and Trump came to personally realize the significance of that idiom in the 1990s: “I was at the highest of all pedestals and then one day the pedestal was knocked out from under me.” In 1990, when the Taj Mahal opened, it was the world's largest hotelcasino. Trump financed the $675-million-dollar purchase primarily through junk bonds. The decision cost him. The gaming industry took a dive with the recession and interest rates were hard to manage. The next year, The Donald was filing for bankruptcy. That was the first time.

38 | 25A Black Market Issue

Less than a year later, the three prior casino purchases in Atlantic City had him back in bankruptcy court filing for a second time. In the mid-nineties, Trump emerges and enters into new territory, acquiring the Miss Universe Organization, which produces the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants. This move ends up setting the stage for future talks with NBC. In 2003, we get to see how the man behind the curtain operates. NBC brings Trump in to host the show The Apprentice. It’s cutthroat and harsh but we can’t stop watching. We hold our breath in anticipation for the climax of each episode when Trump’s ax comes down: “You’re fired.” Between that and our fascination with his comb-over and tan, we can't get enough. The show is a hit. Donald Trump is now a star. A year later, Trump is filing for bankruptcy for the third time while mentoring contestants on how to run a successful money-making business and firing the ones who fail. At that point, we’re waiting to see if NBC will add a certain Alanis Morissette song to kick off each episode of The Apprentice (You know the one... It’s like rain, on your wedding day…) Never happens. Not even in 2009 when Trump declares bankruptcy for the fourth time. We don’t usually associate bankruptcy with success and the show is built around Trump coaching entrepreneurs on running a profitable business, but what are you going to do? Fire the guy? You can’t. You can’t fire the person who is the best at firing people. Fourteen seasons of the show later, we get the news: Donald Trump will not be hosting the next season of The Apprentice. Not because of the bankruptcies, but because he is running for President. “I am the most successful person ever to run for the Presidency,” said Trump during his campaign. And he’s winning primaries. Republican voters are speaking. They want a leader who is blunt, direct, bold and even brash sometimes. They’re tired of the typical political speak that’s painted with watercolors—the meaning muddled and diluted. They’re craving a Picasso. Especially when that Picasso is drawing thick hard lines, showing us clearly how our votes— Republican, Democrat and Independent – are getting lost. Dr. Konstantinos Zarkadas Freezes Out the Pain By Jennifer Pelaez | Photos by Tes Barnett, MA

A

t the forefront of innovative technology in the health and wellness arena, Dr. Konstantinos Zarkadas sits down with 25A to discuss how KryoMed, the first medically supervised cryotherapy location on Long Island, has been changing the lives of those suffering from inflammation and pain. Having garnered much media attention and notoriety after its recent adoption by pro athletes and celebrities, cryotherapy has been around for a few decades, originally developed in Japan, and later taking root in Europe. Now, trending here in the US, Dr. Zarkadas shares the science behind cryotherapy, its profound benefits, and his professional journey which landed him in a field that employs both his medical expertise and cutting-edge science. From his early career as an internist and bariatric expert, to CEO and Medical Director at KryoMed, Dr. Zarkadas confirms that cryotherapy is not just a transient trendy treatment touted by Hollywood A-listers and athletes, but an alternative therapy with dramatic therapeutic and healing benefits. Captivated by the workings of the human body and its complexities, as well as its response to aging and consequent diseases, Dr. Zarkadas began his medical training at Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) School of Medicine in Santo Domingo. Upon graduating he made his way back to Astoria, the neighborhood he had grown up in and where he felt most at home with

his many fellow Greek friends and family. He completed his residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital and went on to open his first private practice. It was also during this time that he struggled with weight, reaching 240 pounds. His concern spurred an interest to learn more about bariatrics - the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity, and underwent extensive training to become a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. Dr. Zarkadas recalls, “I thought, how can I affect my patients lives the most; the common denominator in most diseases - high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes - is obesity... so if I battle that disease, then I can affect all these other diseases simultaneously. Dr. Zarkadas also developed his own system, Trim Med, after achieving a weight loss of over 45 pounds. He decided to formulate this medical weight loss system to help his patients achieve the same results, while simultaneously improving their overall health. The Trim Med program is based on the latest nutritional science and scientific knowledge that takes into account the way your body processes different type of foods. Dr. Zarkadas and his team at Trim Med have helped more than 4,000 patients lose over 250,000 pounds, and continues to provide patients with a highly supervised, convenient and enjoyable way to stick to an May 2016 | 41

effective weight loss program. Each patient’s experience is tailored to their specific needs, and meals, vitamins, appetite suppression medications are provided along with medical consultations and weekly visits to ensure patients stay on track. Dr. Zarkadas devotes his time to ensuring the longevity of his patients’ health and in developing long-lasting relationships, which have earned him recognition and honors in America’s Top Physicians, numerous years in a row, as well as the Patient Choice Award and Most Compassionate Doctor Award. In addition to his Trim Med branches in Manhattan, Astoria, Bayside and Garden City, Dr Zarkadas also has three fully staffed multi-specialty centers in Manhattan where he offers a comprehensive range of healthcare services, treating everything from cardiology to urology. As Dr. Zarkadas alternated between these centers and the Trim Med offices, he observed a large percentage of patients had inflammatory-based problems including arthritis, gout, joint disorders, rheumatoid diseases, as well as sports injuries requiring a tremendous amount of medications, which compelled him to question if there was an alternative way to treat these issues. This train of thought was further propagated by his wife, a tennis player, who along with her partner had recurring injuries, taking them out from competitions for extended periods of time. Like most athletes, they relied upon ice packs and ice baths, but had heard about cryotherapy from Hollywood and television, and encouraged Dr. Zarkadas to continue pursuing and researching this fascinating new way of alleviating pain and inflammation. Six months later, KryoMed was born. Located in Greenvale on the North Shore, the center combines cryotherapy with personalized fitness and beauty to address the effects of aging, stress, disease and injury - and all under medical supervision. What distinguishes KryoMed from other centers is Dr. Zarkadas’ passion and determination to make cryotherapy as safe as possible, in addition to his superior medical training and expertise on the subject. He has implemented strict protocols to ensure each patient is properly screened before beginning a session, and an exit consult is also mandated to ensure body temperature and vitals have returned to a normal state. Dr Zarkadas reaffirms, “This has to be safe, effective cryotherapy - in other words, before you get into the sauna, you need to have a medical clearance.” By developing strict protocols and proper screening, possible complications resulting from underlying health issues can be prevented. For example, undergoing such low temperatures raises blood pressure ten percent, so if you already suffer from hypertension, you may not be a good candidate. Dr. Zarkadas stresses that proper medical supervision is paramount and wants people to be aware that just because there may be many centers popping up, such as In California where they have become so popular, does not necessarily make them safe, especially if not properly operated and supervised. So what exactly is cryotherapy? Cryo, comes from the Greek word “krous,” meaning, icy or frost, so cryotherapy in essence is the application of cold which causes blood vessels to constrict resulting in reduced blood flow and consequently reduction of pain, swelling and inflammation. Whole-body cryotherapy takes this one step further by treating the entire system at one time. Dr Zarkadas explains, “The cryotherapy machine pumps nitrogen inside the chamber decreasing the temperature to under minus 200 degrees Fahrenheit.” The theory is that this intense cold tricks the body into believing it is actually freezing, triggering it into a state of self-preservation, “it starts shunting the blood from the extremities to the core organs, and there starts producing endorphins and epinephrine.” These endorphins and anti-inflammatory hormones provide you with a boost of vitality and feeling of euphoria. When you exit the chamber, this newly enriched and super oxygenated blood is pumped vigorously throughout the body, rushing back to the extremities, where it’s said to flush out toxins and improve circulation. The results are nothing but spectacular - improved sleep, an enhanced immune system and reduced inflammation are among its many benefits. It can also have beautifying effects, mitigate depression and even assist in weight loss when complemented with a balanced diet - a three-minute treatment is said to burn up to 800 calories. In addition to this whole-body application, cryotherapy can also be applied locally for those who have specific areas they would like to address in a more precise way. KryoLocal targets an exact spot, a joint or muscle, for example, and is a much more powerful and efficient way to treat a specific problem or injury than simply icing. It is frequently combined with whole-body cryotherapy for optimal results. Similar in concept, Kryofacials provide a targeted application as well, improving skin quality and stimulating the production of collagen for long-term benefits. Pressured liquid nitrogen vapors are applied to the face and neck which help decrease pore size and create a more even-toned complexion. Circulation is also improved resulting in a radiant and glowing appearance. For best results it is recommended to do a series of treatments. When asked how often one should come in for sessions, Dr. Zarkadas notes that each protocol differs, depending on your concern, medical history and body’s response to the treatment. Some patients come in daily while others are in a maintenance phase and come weekly or less often. Three-minute sessions are $90 which include all medical consultations and the first visit is half-price off. Purchasing packages is a great way to improve your health at an affordable rate. The larger the package, the higher the discount per session. With such a high demand and growing interest in cryotherapy, Dr. Zarkadas plans on opening seven or eight more locations in the next year, throughout the North Shore and Hamptons. Whether you are looking to improve your overall well-being, or seeking to address a medical or physical condition, perform better in sports, or simply to improve your complexion, KryoMed provides a unique and safe way to keep you feeling and looking your best.

Teisui

Haute Yakitori Comes to New York

W

By Christopher A. Pape

hen word associating with food cultures, often “Technique” or “Sophistication” is used for French and words like “Passion” or “Freshness” for Italian. But, what are the words New Yorkers have come to associate with Japanese cuisine? Certainly, subtle or sushi might roll off the tongue. Yet, Japanese food is so much more than that. Varied, flavored and yes, passionate can and should be easily applied to the world of Japanese haute cuisine, outside of sushi or kaiseki.

Teisui is designed to re-create the experience of a Japanese Ryokan hotel in New York City. The food is prepared by a highly skilled team of Japanese chefs, including Nobutaka Watanabe, who studied and taught at Hattori Nutritional Culinary School, a top-rated Culinary Institute in Tokyo, and was also Head Chef of the Hapa Izakaya restaurant in Vancouver, Canada, and Yuichiro Yoshimura, who is an experienced yakitori chef and until recently, worked at the Teisui Hotel.

In recent years, the Japanese have made a concerted effort to show New Yorkers this other side of their cooking. Teisui, a bastion of haute yakitori, in the hot new section of Nomad, is one of the leading actors in this push. With its serene setting, excellent service, thoughtful, but bold cooking, the restaurant is sure to become a mainstay for New Yorkers who seek a refined meal that packs a punch.

Nestled on 28th Street, Teisui features a 17-seat bar and a few surrounding tables. The bar is the place to be as it offers an unobstructed view of food being created for your eating pleasure. And since each plate is crafted until it looks perfect; imperfections are discarded. The zen-like, modern/ industrial room was designed by a Japanese architect and features graphite tabletops, steel-gray furniture and contemporary light fixtures.

46 | 25A Black Market Issue

The menu showcases a mix of consistent and rotating dishes, all of which provide modern takes on traditional Japanese cuisine. With a set menu of 10 courses, Teisui is a feast not just for the eyes, but also for the palate. For example, Tsukune, a round patty of smoothly minced chicken braised in yakitori sauce and served with a slightly cooked egg yolk was a showstopper. The meat was mouthwatering, moist, flavorful and delicate, and was only in enhanced by the pristine yolk it was paired with. Ishiyaki, a miso soup created using heated Mount Fuji rocks to slow cook red snapper, king crab and Tokyo scallion before your eyes was the perfect way to end the savory portion of the meal. And a real treat for my Japanese dining guest, who savored the brininess and saltiness of the dish. Mention must also be made of their uni royale. The amuse bouche is served in a small bowl, where egg custard suspends a dash of

edamame purÊe, foie gras and a dollop of uni. Creamy, rich and a textbook entry for umami (the Japanese idea of savory flavor), this was a small taste of perfection and a portent of good things to come. For those seeking to bust the stereotypes of Japanese cuisine, Teisui is the perfect place to visit. With its thoughtful design, quiet space, attentive wait staff and food made with care and only the highest quality ingredients, the restaurant is a treat that can’t be missed!

Frankie & Johnnie’s A Sizzling Steakhouse

I

By Ryan Wilk

t’s always sad to see a restaurant move, especially when it’s been at the same location for 90 years. However, it’s important to remember that change is a necessary part of life. Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse has been embracing this change very well by honoring the old location as well as embracing the new. Long-term fans won’t be disappointed as the new location is only a block away, and the owners have gone out of their way to give it the same type of atmosphere with a similar menu that will continue to delight for another 90 years. Since it was founded in 1926, Frankie & Johnnie’s has become a restaurant filled with history. During the Prohibition Era, it had a bar in a hidden back room that has since been converted into an event section. Being right by the highly trafficked Time Square area has given the restaurant a renowned reputation and has even attracted celebrities, such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Douglas. In their new location, Frankie & Johnnie’s is still attracting diners on their way to and from Broadway shows. When dining at Frankie & Johnnie’s, it’s recommended that people come prepared for a multiple-course meal as the appetizers, entrees and desserts are all noteworthy. Two great appetizers to start off with are the Golden Corn Bisque and the Tuna Tartare. What makes the Golden Corn Bisque a good starter is the fact that they give you just enough to whet your appetite. The first sip envelops your mouth with the taste of the sweet hot corn that is

48 | 25A Black Market Issue

complemented by the coolness of crème fraîche. The Tuna Tartare melts in your mouth and one can taste a mild brininess of the sea that enhances the flavor of the fish. An avocado relish topping completes the dish. The menu offers a well-edited selection of USDA Prime steaks ranging from Rib Eye to Porterhouse. Each steak is carefully seasoned with a special blend of spices giving it a unique Frankie & Johnnie’s flavor and tenderness. French-Style Chicken Breasts smothered in mushroom sauce, Shrimp Scampi over wild rice, or South African Lobster Tails, are just a few of the other entrees available on the extensive menu. There is also a raw bar. After trying some great appetizers and entrees, be sure to leave room for dessert, because the cheesecake at Frankie & Johnnie’s can’t be missed. The cheesecake is light and fluffy and melts in your mouth. Each slice comes with sweet sauce drizzled on the plate. The recent relocation of Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse, hasn’t diminished the quality of the food, it is just as delicious as before. The owners of Frankie & Johnnie’s Steakhouse are excited to make history at their new location. 32 West 37th St NY, NY 10018 212.947.8940 frankieandjohnnies.com

Theo’s RESTAURANT and Oyster Bar A Modern Approach to Mediterranean

I

By Christopher A. Pape

n the firmament of New York City Mediterranean restaurants, Theo’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar is by far the brightest. Located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Theo’s is a delicious take on modern Mediterranean fare, with the freshest seafood selections on offer. And having many a fair share of mediocre and uninspired fish, it was a pleasurable experience to taste the refined and seasonal delicacies that Nicolas Poulmentis, executive chef, prepares on a nightly basis. My guest and I were immediately impressed with the extensive selection of oysters and shellfish from around the world. Carabineros Shrimp, from off the coast of Spain, was a true highlight (Theo's is one of only a few restaurants in Manhattan to serve it). Given their name by the Spanish – Carabineros translates as “police” – reputedly because the color of their shells matched the uniforms of Spanish customs police, their vibrant red color does not change when cooked (as does a lobster shell from blue to red when boiled.) More distinct and robust in flavor than other shrimp or langoustine, they are also coveted for their large size. While most of their tender meat resides in the tail, their cephalothoraxes (head and body) are not to be overlooked. None of this prawn should go to waste, and my Japanese dining partner was in heaven as he savored the briny goodness of this succulent shellfish. It goes without saying, that Chef Poulmentis prepared the Carabineros with a skill reserved for kitchens typically bestowed with a Michelin star. And I would be disappointed, if he does not receive one for himself.

50 | 25A Black Market Issue

We also enjoyed the African King Prawn from the coast of South Africa and Langoustine from Portugal. Another standout dish was the Salmon Tartare, which showcased the kitchen’s modus operandi of modern simplicity as the dish was created to enhance the flavor and freshness of the ingredients, not to hide them. In perfect harmony with fresh vanilla beans, chives and a lime caviar (a nod to molecular gastronomy), the dish was bright and light; a perfect way to start the thoughtful omakase (tasting) Chef Poulmentis and his staff prepared. Homemade Octopus Terrine and Greek yogurt are some of the small touches that make Theo’s stand ahead of the rest. Combined with a sleek interior that harkens not to New York but to some European capital of cool and a cocktail list that will impress and quench, the restaurant is an oasis for those looking for modern Mediterranean cuisine done with classically trained technique. It doesn’t hurt that every dish sampled was delicious!

rance is one European country whose culture puts a big importance on two of the most wonderful things in the world, food and relaxation. If you visit France, you can spend hours sitting at the dinner table, having great conversation and taking the time to appreciate the food that you’re eating. Although it’s hard to capture the authenticity of an entire culture that’s 4,000 miles away, the French restaurant La Gamelle in New York City comes pretty close. La Gamelle’s menu perfectly captures the flavors that make France the food capital of the world. Try the Escargots, prepared to perfection with garlicky parsley butter. The level of care taken with this classic dish is equal to that of a Michelin-accredited Paris restaurant. The classic Onion Soup enrobed in melted Gruyere is visually appealing and radiates flavor. La Gamelle’s Foie Gras Terrine comes with a fig compote and grilled filone, taking this dish to another level. This dish is prepared with perfect care from start to finish and with the first bite, you will feel as though you were transported to a historically rich land across the Atlantic where you can relax and spend hours enjoying the delicious food. Steak Frites, another classic, can be prepared with a buerre blanc maitre d’hotel sauce or a béarnaise sauce. For the seafood lovers, a delicious pot of Moules Frites can be made with a saffron, mariniere, provencale or curry broth, each version sublime. Finish

Bordeaux is the home to some of the best wine in the world, and it is well-represented here at La Gamelle. Whatever your preference is, red or white, there is sure to be something for you on this menu. France is one of the best destinations for food in the world. It’s not always very convenient to make the trip over there, but we in New York are fortunate to have La Gamelle in our own neighborhood. This place does a wonderful job of capturing the essence that makes France so great and on any given night, you will be able to try some of the best food found in this city.

W

hen entertaining, guacamole is a food that gets people excited; with summer coming, it’s one of the perfect dishes to share with friends when you’re outside enjoying the beautiful weather. But there’s more to guacamole than just being delicious. Its base – the avocado – is one of the healthiest fruits out there. The avocado is a tremendous superfood. Not only does it taste amazing, but numerous studies have shown it has powerful beneficial effects on your overall health. These fruits are packed with the right kind of fats, and includes important vitamins such as C, B6, as well as magnesium and potassium. They also give you a healthy dose of fiber and protein and can even lower cholesterol or help you lose weight.

When it comes to avocados, the first thing most people think of is guacamole. If you’re not making your own guacamole, you should be! It’s the only way to ensure all of the ingredients you’re eating are fresh and natural. It’s also incredibly easy to make – just combine ripe avocados with salt, lime juice, cilantro, chilies, tomatoes, and whatever other flavors you like, and you’ve got a dish that will impress. I recommend buying a mortar and pestle that’s authentic and carved out of volcanic rock to elevate your guacamole to a new level. Guacamole not only pairs well with chips, it’s a fabulous add for any sandwich or salad. Speaking of salad, avocados also make a creamy base for salad dressing, transforming a humdrum salad into something really special. By pureeing the avocado and adding a bit of vinegar, you have an incredible start for a dressing. From there, add seasonings that appeal to you for a customized – and healthy – salad dressing option. Using the same idea of pureeing avocados, you can do the same to create a healthy version of “faux” creamy fettucine. Mix avocado puree with garlic in a food processor, add some lemon zest, basil, black pepper, and parmesan and you have a wonderful sauce. Throw a few fresh tomatoes on top, cook it on the stovetop, and it’s absolutely fantastic.

I love to carve out avocados and stuff them with fruits and vegetables, but you can also make a protein-packed brunch treat by carving it out and baking the egg right in the avocado. It’s a great way to start the day and offers a unique presentation for your eggs. Another way to combine avocado with eggs is deviled eggs, and older dish that’s recently made a comeback because of their high protein and low carb content. You can serve up your deviled eggs using avocado as a secret ingredient in the stuffing to add complexity to the flavor and a creaminess to the texture. Avocados can also be a creative addition to a soup that will taste delicious and keep you full. Combine them with cucumber, chives, lime juice, and perhaps a touch of jalapeno. It’s the perfect dish to make ahead of time. Did you know you can use avocado and coconut oil as the base to make desserts? The internet is filled with amazing recipes using avocado as a healthier dessert base, such as brownies, pudding, or even ice cream. It’s a great option if you’re trying to eat healthier as the weather gets warmer – this way, you can have your cake and not feel guilty about eating it, too! You can incorporate this superfood into any meal, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert. While guacamole is always a classic, try thinking outside the box with your avocados and you’ll end up with fun, creative dishes. May 2016 | 59

Hotel de la Ville & La villA Majesty in Monza By Christopher A. Pape

H

aving traveled the world and spent many days in my ancestral homeland, Italy, it is a rare treat to find a place that I would love to call home. The city of Monza, a superb suburb of Milan, is one such destination. And its finest hotel, Hotel de la Ville & La Villa is the hotel (house) where I would love to live! This impeccably designed property, with its English club-like atmosphere (woods, antiques, drapery, leathers, wall clocks and so much more) is a step back to another time; a gentler, more genteel time where one can truly experience il dolce fare niente (the sweetness of doing nothing). From owner to bartender, the entire staff at Hotel de la Ville & La Villa was accommodating, knowledgeable, professional and above all else,

64 | 25A Black Market Issue

friendly. Mr. Tany Nardi, co-owner with his brother Luigi and Director General of the hotel, showered us with his love for Monza and Italy and its food and culture. This desire to showcase the passion they have for their home permeated through everything—from the beautiful room and its furnishings to the most delicious meal at their restaurant, the Derby Grill. Hotel de la Ville, a luxury four-star accommodation with views over the Monza Villa Reale, is a magnificent location and is ideal for the requirements of both work and pleasure. In this strategic location, the Hotel de la Ville and its annex, La Villa, are surrounded by the clean air of the Reggia Savoia Park and are approximately 9 miles from Milan Central Station and about 13 miles from the Fiera Milano Rho.

The hotel is inspired by the Palazzo Reale, the summer residence of the Savoy family, which the hotel overlooks. The Nardi family, with their impeccable taste, transformed each of the splendid rooms and suites of the hotel and its beautiful annex, La Villa, in tribute to the style of the men and women who have made Italian history. With its 70 rooms, including five junior suites and three suites, the hotel is the perfect size —not too small to be cloyingly intimate and not too large to be informal. This ethos shines through, as you are welcomed by the Italian staff with warm smiles and a helping hand. The real treat, beyond the soft bed and luxurious amenities, is the fine restaurant, the Derby Grill. Helmed by fellow southern Italian (interesting fact: the chef actually knows where my grandmother was born), Fabio Silva, the restaurant was a treat and helped me discover why northern Italian cooking is as impressive as southern. One of the most famous

restaurants in the Lombardy region, the Derby Grill is a culinary tribute to Italian tradition, a fascinating journey through the regions of Italy and offers an exceptional wine list. The menu, art collections and extraordinary skill in both kitchen and dining room makes it the ideal location for a romantic dinner, an exclusive business lunch or to celebrate an important occasion. Next door, the elegant American Bar is ideal for any type of event and social gathering – a piece of New York in the heart of Monza. Whether there for business or for pleasure (be sure to stop by the Villa Reale just next to the hotel; it is a real treat!), the Hotel de la Villa & La Villa and Monza itself will delight. Stop by for more than a day and you’ll understand why I would not hesitate to call this place home. hoteldelaville.com condenastjohansens.com/hoteldelaville May 2016 | 65

Hotel Saturnia & International A Venetian Delight

L

By Christopher A. Pape

ess than a five-minute walk from central Piazza San Marco, the Hotel Saturnia & International provides the perfect location for a trip to Venice. Located in the San Marco neighborhood, the hotel possesses a coveted address due in part to the walking distance to the famous piazza and close to important sights such as the Rialto Bridge and other numerous museums and restaurants. It’s central to almost everywhere you’ll want to go in Venice, including the Grand Canal. San Marco, one of the most popular neighborhoods for visitors, allows guests to wander the streets in search of local restaurants and high-end shopping for a taste of local culture in the midst of a touristy city.

66 | 25A Black Market Issue

The hotel’s accommodations, although charming and rustic, are luxe, with historic details such as wood-beamed ceilings and mahogany headboards. They also include modern touches like flat- screen TVs, central air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, mini bars and contemporary bathrooms (some rooms also offer balconies). There are various categories of rooms ranging from junior suites to standard doubles, catering to families, couples or singles. There is no spa, pool or fitness center here (although passes to a nearby gym are available), but what it does offer is impeccable service and a top-notch restaurant, along with a solarium rooftop terrace, with stunning views of the Venice rooftops and the perfect spot to unwind with a chilled aperitif after a day of sightseeing.

If you’re a foodie (or even if you’re not), the on-site restaurant, La Caravella, is one of the best in St. Mark’s Square and has been serving traditional Venetian dishes in a typical Italian setting since the 1960s. The menu changes seasonally, using only fresh ingredients from carefully selected purveyors. During the warm weather months, usually May until September, their flower-filled courtyard allows their patrons to experience dinner in an enchanting Venetian ambience. Be sure to try their risotto with fennel and lobster, oven-roasted turbot with potatoes and olives, and Venetian-style fish soup. The Serandrei family undisputedly ranks amongst the city's most notable hoteliers. For four generations already they have been running the stylish Hotel Saturnia & International, housed inside a stately patrician palace dating from the fourteenth century.

Visiting Venice during the summertime means you are literally one of millions of tourists who flock to this romantic city during its high season. For a change of pace try visiting in the off-season when the tourists are gone and the locals reclaim their magical city, allowing visitors to experience the city at a slower, more peaceful pace, sans crowds and hectic schedules. And what could be more rewarding than enjoying one of the city’s most sinful libations, a traditional Venetian hot chocolate, on a chilly winter’s day?

The Grand Hotel Majestic “già Baglioni” Bologna's Grandest

By Marianne Belmonte

raveled to Italy recently? If so, did you visit the majestic city of Bologna? No? Well you are missing out on one of Italy’s magical city centers. Located between the Po River and the Adriatic Sea Bologna is a capital within the Emilia Romagna Region and is truly one of Northern Italy’s major highlights. If you love the antiquity of Rome and the romance of Renaissance Florence, Bologna offers both of these as well as one of Europe’s most preserved large cities of the Medieval period. Additionally it is home to the oldest university in the world—Alma Mater Studiorum (University of Bologna). Now that I’ve gotten your attention, may I recommend that during your stay in Bologna you treat yourself to a royal experience and book a room or suite at the Grand Hotel Majestic “Già Baglioni." Located in the heart of 68 | 25A Black Market Issue

Bologna across from the Basilica of Saint Peter's Cathedral and walking distance from Piazza Maggiore and the renowned Due Torri, you couldn’t ask for a more convenient and desirable location. The Grand Hotel Majestic “Già Baglioni" is the only five-star hotel in Bologna and a member of “The Leading Hotels of the World” association. Originally built as an Archbishop’s seminary the building has been used as a hotel since 1912. Constructed in the 18th century it is a palace made to accommodate royalty and those of us who would like to imagine ourselves as royalty, if only while on vacation. Opulent and decadent, the furnishings and the structure are historical and if your passion is architecture and art, then you’ll have it all at the Grand Hotel Majestic “Già Baglioni."

Although the hotel has undergone a recent renovation, their aim was to preserve the ancient palace and its splendor, adding modern comforts. All 109 rooms are fashioned in a Venetian-traditional style, incorporating 19th century French antiques. The result is magnifique. Recently a more modern suite was created. The Art Deco Terrace Suite is the hotel’s flagship suite and is the only room on the fifth floor that contains its own private elevator. The suite has a large living room with a fireplace and bar area. The two bathrooms are done in black-and-white Carrara marble and nothing has been spared when it comes to the details. Best of all, the suite has a terrace with a breathtaking view of the city center. The Grand Hotel Majestic “Già Baglioni's" premiere restaurant is I Carracci, which has been awarded with The Michelin Guide "Three Forks." This prestigious award onfirms its attentive enchancement of gastronomic made-in-Italy culture. Frescoes, dating back to the 16th century attributed to the Carracci brothers, will have you feeling as though you have been transported to another era.

The haute cuisine is a combination of rustic regional specialties, such as tortellini, tagliatelle and lasagna with some national and international dishes represented as well. While staying at The Grand Hotel Majestic “Già Baglioni" and enjoying all of its amenities don’t forget to explore Bologna. This city is home to art, culture, business and world-renowned for its auto industry. You might even want to visit the Ferrari factory, a train ride away from Bologna or perhaps go to the Luciano Pavarotti House Museum also in the region of Emilia-Romagna. Wherever or whatever your interests are, you can’t ask for better accommodations than at The Grand Hotel Majestic “Già Baglioni" where you will be treated like royalty with impeccable service and Italian graciousness. Trust me when I say you will remember this experience long after your stay and will want to return to experience, as the Italians say…La Dolce Vita.

The Crane

History meets Luxury Barbados style at The Crane

T

By Norah Bradford

he Crane, set on forty acres of oceanfront land in the parish of St. Philip, on Barbados’ south-east coast, is the island’s oldest vacation resort. Conveniently located a mere six minutes east of Grantley Adams International Airport, the resort boasts a spectacular natural setting on a cliff overlooking the renowned Crane Beach, yet offers easy access to the rest of the island. Today, The Crane is comprised of the original historic hotel building, built in the late 1700’s and ex-panded in 1887 alongside a new, all-suite development. Since the mid-18th century, Southeastern Barbados was frequented by the island's plantation owners and prosperous merchants. They were attracted by the cool breezes, stimulating climate and bathing in the waters recognized for their recuperative powers. The area's main building was a mansion known as Marine Villa, which today exists almost in its original state and forms the east section of The Crane. The style of its windows and casements suggests it was built about 1790. In 1886, civil engineer Donald Simpson purchased Marine Villa and conceived of enlarging the house and opening it as a hotel. Simpson's hotel venture was encouraged by de-velopment of the railway in 1881 to Sunbury, St. Philip from Bridgetown. Simpson completed the first addition to Marine Villa with the addition of four coral stone apartments that comprise the south wing of the hotel. 74 | 25A Black Market Issue

In 1988 the current owner of The Crane, Canadian Paul Doyle, bought the resort and has over-seen its multi-million dollar expansion. Visitors to The Crane can book one of two different types of accommodations: 1887 Resort Apartments, housed in the original historic hotel, or one of the property’s new suites. 1887 Resort Apartments The Crane's original historic hotel is comprised of 18 charming, spacious oceanfront gues-trooms and suites with 12-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, exquisite antique furniture, fully equipped kitchens and spectacular views of the rugged southeastern coastline. The rooms in this part of The Crane are steeped in the rich history of Barbados, with several featuring coral stone walls that are over 200 years old. Many of the rooms in the historic hotel also feature lav-ish mahogany four-poster king size beds, ceiling fans, or air-conditioning; while suites offer a semi-private sitting area and fold-out couches to sleep additional guests. Residences at The Crane The exquisite suites at The Crane, the first of which opened in the year 2001, offer resort guests a new standard of upscale vacation accommodations. By marrying nineteenth century grandeur and furnishings with twenty-first century luxuries, con-veniences, and amenities, The Crane has created a level of

exclusive resort living while retain-ing the grace and elegance of its historic past. Suites at The Crane boast the finest in furniture and finishes, including handcrafted Barbadian mahogany furniture, objects d'art, oriental carpets and traditionally high four-poster king size beds. The setting, however, provides the true feel of the resort: old-world coral stone walls, hardwood floors, 10 foot high timber tray ceilings, floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms and amazing views of The Crane’s crystal clear, turquoise waters. Each full suite also features bay windows with oiled cedar shutters, spa shower with multiple shower heads, jacuzzi bath, cable TV, DVD player and VCR; double door fridge with in-door icemaker, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and central air-conditioning from discretely hidden ducts. The world-renowned swimming pool at The Crane remains the centerpiece of this luxury resort, being set at the top of a cliff and framed by a row of classic Doric columns, overlooking the natu-rally spectacular Crane Beach. Guests of The Crane can also enjoy their own private pools; ei-ther a tower plunge pool or ground floor pool of up to 28 ft. in length, many possess an infinity edge, featuring breathtaking ocean views. Recently completed in winter 2007, The Crane opened the much-anticipated element of the expansion project -- the pool complex. The new pool complex encompasses four individual pools with cascading waterfalls, meandering land-scaping, soft lighting and alfresco hot tub. L’Azure Restaurant at The Crane serves a range of classic and Caribbean delicacies. Best known for its creations using fresh seafood, L’Azure has achieved several distinctions for fine cuisine. The atmosphere of L’Azure

evokes elegance and beauty as patrons dine inside the original 115-year old coral stone walls of the dining room, or on the wrap-around balcony where the panoramic views of Crane Beach which provide a stunning backdrop for a romantic meal. On Sundays, the restaurant offers a Gospel breakfast in the morning featuring live entertain-ment by some of Barbados’ best gospel artistes; followed by a traditional Barbadian Sunday buf-fet lunch. Zen, a new dining experience debuted at The Crane in late 2005 and is celebrating its first decade, featuring classic Thai and Japanese cuisine in a stunning setting overlooking Crane Beach. Zen features traditional Tatami rooms, an exquisite sushi bar and the option for guests to enjoy private dining. In 2009 and 2010, Zen achieved the distinction of being #1 Zagat-rated restaurant in Barbados. a Compagnie, an affordable all-business-class airline operating from Newark airport, services two destinations: Paris and London. Those who regularly fly business class on larger airlines such as British Airways or American might find La Compagnie a slight step down. But, for the majority of people who fly economy or premium economy across the pond, your chariot has arrived! Founded by Frantz Yvelin who previously founded L’Avion airline (which he eventually sold to British Airways), La Compagnie doesn’t pretend to compete with the big boys. On the contrary, Mr. Yvelin has developed an airline with a niche all its own. Prices of approximately $1500 roundtrip to London make this the most affordable and luxurious business class in the sky. Their Boeing 757-200s have been reconfigured with just 74 angled flatbed seats, offering an amenity kit and a fully loaded Samsung tablet in your seat back (a nice departure from the TV screens) with movies, music and magazines. The flight attendants, primarily French, are accommodating and considerate. You’ll never wait long to board this flight. With just 74 passengers, there’s an atmosphere of calm during the boarding process and

80 | 25A Black Market Issue

the sounds of slamming bins were non-existent. Small glasses of Champagne with cranberry juice were passed around pre-takeoff and once in the air the flight crew quickly began serving our meals along with a selection of French wines. Crossing the Atlantic was a breeze and I was able to take a nice, long nap that would never have been accomplished in an upright economy seat. In London, the airline lands in Luton Airport, just a one-hour ride into central London; and a smaller airport means short immigration lines. Passengers have access to business lounges in all the airports (Newark, Luton London and Charles De Gaulle). While the Luton lounge was great, complete with a Bliss Spa and sleep pods, the Newark Lounge was not as luxurious. The downside? La Compagnie is a small airline serving just two cities; meaning a small fleet of just two planes. Cancelled flights can be an issue (my return flight was cancelled and I had to return a day later) so be aware before you book this flight. That said, if your dates are flexible I would highly recommend this airline. Its service, value and product can’t be beat. lacompagnie.com

Liya Laser Lounge should definitely be on your list. Liya Laser Lounge is known mostly for their hair removal, though they also offer photo facials. The main idea behind the business is the fact anyone at any age can look young and beautiful. In fact, Liya has clients up to 70 years old lining up for her treatment. Liya has noticed that everyone who comes in, leaves with a special glow that they didn’t walk in with. Liya is so experienced and good at what she does that people who have had her treatments, frequently come back and tell their friends as well. Although getting laser treatment may not seem like an enjoyable experience, Liya does her best to make all her clients comfortable. This is heightened by the fact that she is located in a spa in Roslyn, NY. This upscale relaxation spot has been popular for 14 years, so after their treatment, clients can spend time in the lounge.

At Liya Laser Lounge, Liya makes sure that the technology used is up to date and the best in the industry. The main laser that she uses is the Cynosure Elite Mpx, which is the latest machine of its kind and offers less pain because of its cooling system. Not many of her competitors have this advanced tool. With this kind of technology at her disposal, Liya is able to significantly cut down the number of treatments that would normally be needed to completely fix an issue.

Although she’s happy where she is, like most business owners, she is excited about the idea of growing Liya Laser Lounge and takes steps each day to move towards this goal. Maybe some day this lounge will be the number one hair removal place around, but for now Liya is happy with the treatments she’s giving.

Although this particular lounge hasn't been around for long, Liya is no stranger to running her own business. For 20 years, Liya worked in retail as the owner of a supermarket. Despite having this successful store, Liya could never shake the idea that she always wanted to be in the beauty business. After some time, Liya proved that it’s never too late to make a career shift by giving up her retail business to get the beauty business she always wanted. Since then she has been able to grow Liya Laser Lounge and satisfy countless people.

Between her experience and state of the art equipment, Liya has everything needed to give people the best treatments possible. With the practices done at Liya Laser Lounge, no one has to worry about unwanted hair or scars on their face. Instead, clients can go out and let their faces shine for the world.

One thing that anyone speaking with Liya will notice right away is the level of satisfaction she feels with the way the Laser Lounge turned

TRN Revolutionizes Personal Training (and helping me too!)

was always a skinny child. I loved to run, play tennis; I was even an equestrian for many years. But my first episode in weight gain was my senior year in college. I had just returned from China (where I became very thin) and even though I was playing tennis six times a week, I still gained close to 40 pounds that year.

job, I walked to work or around the city. But here, I drive from my apartment in the city out to our office on the island. I do zero walking or exercising. It’s become so bad that finally my weight has become an issue. I can no longer stand it; I’m horrified by what I see in the mirror.

Flash-forward two years and I had lost it all and then some. By 24, I had lost 60 pounds and I was the thinnest I had been since probably before high school. But, with my promotion to editor-inchief of another magazine (which I helmed for 4 years) came stress and perks. Those perks - dining out, traveling, attending events and the stress of producing a quality publication led me to eat like I had never before and to gain an excessive amount of weight.

I was addicted to food. I liked how it made me feel when I ate it. I got lost in it. It then became a habit. I longed for it, and sometimes that is all I could think about. It helped me manage all of my emotions.

With my switch to 25A, things only got worse. At least at my old 84 | 25A Black Market Issue

How I Plan to Lose It: Thank goodness for friends and colleagues, because they suggested that I work with TRN. It was created by Greg Peters and Pat Manocchia, partners and specialists at La Palestra Center for Preventative Medicine in New York City, which Pat founded in 1994.

Having spent a combined 40 years training clients, they saw the deficiencies in the market - with pricing, professionalism, ease-of-use and experience of specialists and decided to change it. TRN, their new app, allows the consumer to books sessions with an experienced specialist (each specialist is vetted by Pat and Greg and their bio is available for perusal on the app) focusing in personal training, yoga, pilates and swimming. Best of all, the specialists comes to you! Whether at your home gym, building’s gym or one that you subscribe to, the specialists will work with you at the place that best fits your needs. By creating a streamlined system for arranging appointments with elite specialists to come to you, helping more people achieve their fitness goals, TRN is revolutionizing the personal training space. I was assigned one of their best—William—and we have been working together for the past two weeks. He has pushed me (not in an overly aggressive way) to work harder and become stronger. His belief, which is very different than what I have encountered in the past, is to not work within the clients’ ability.

And so far, I find his workouts to be strenuous without being overkill. Greg and Pat have also teamed up with the best nutritionists in the business, Brown & Medina Nutrition. The firm, run by Lisa Brown, MS, RDN, CDN and Jennifer Medina, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE is a comprehensive private nutrition practice that specializes in individual and family consulting. After our first meeting, I could tell that they care for each and every client and was impressed by their depth of knowledge and compassion for weight issues. We discussed, in detail, my eating habits and have come up with a plan of action. I’ll be working with TRN and Brown & Medina Nutrition for the next several months and will be reporting my progress in these pages. I hope to have made great strides! I know without them I couldn’t even tackle this serious issue. trnme.com brownmedinanutrition.com May 2016 | 85

1. I understand that you’re taking stem cells from bone marrow instead of fat, why is that? Based upon actual clinical research, bone marrow is documented to give more stem cells than fat cells, especially when using a high speed 400rpm centrifuge. So, when you take stem cells from fat and you put them in a 400rpm centrifuge you’re getting 100 million – 200 million cells on average and with bone marrow you’re getting closer to a billion and a half stem cells based on clinical research and based upon what we’ve seen in the office. Bone marrow also has platelet-rich plasma in the bone marrow already.

Learn how to maximize your health and get your vitamins and minerals corrected now so your body will be healthier in the future. You want to do all these things to maximize your health and decrease the chance of disease. 4. How do stem cells work in general? Stem cells are unique because they are able to find areas of damage, inflammation and degeneration and respond and set up repair in those tissues.

2. Are stem cells right for everyone? What is an appropriate age to become a candidate for stem cells? Typically, within the clinical trails that we are doing the range goes from 18-100 and we’re using stem cells for many conditions including arthritis of any joint, diabetes, COPD, erectile dysfunction, frailty syndrome, heart failure, kidney/liver failure, MS, Parkinson’s, polaroid fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

We need to know what their levels are so that from that point, we can start correcting their deficiencies.

3. At what age should we start thinking about longevity and quality of life? This is something we should think of in our 20s and 30s. We should test our vitamins, minerals, hormones to start correcting these areas and there are

Food Cravings To Give in or Not to Give in?

H

By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN

ow much time and energy do you spend trying to overcome food cravings? If your answer is “way too much,” you’re certainly not alone. Many of my clients tell me they feel “guilty” or even “weak” when they give into food cravings since these cravings are usually not for the most “healthy” foods. After all, there are not many people out there that crave carrot sticks and hummus. Although it is important to eat nutritious foods a large majority of the time, I truly believe that your body craves certain foods for a reason. In other words, your body knows what is best and will tell you what it wants or needs. That being said, sometimes cravings can be associated with a negative trigger of events. For example, when you have been depriving yourself of specific foods/food groups or taking in an inadequate amount of calories/nutrients, your cravings will be a lot stronger. In these instances, indulging your cravings may lead you to veer off-track way more than you intended. If you are avoiding sweets, for example, you may find yourself craving a warm and gooey chocolate chip cookie. Because you have dubbed this food “off-limits,” it may be difficult to stop at one cookie once you start. However, if you accept the fact that your body wants and needs some sweets a small fraction of the time, mentally you will not feel as guilty when you eat one small (albeit delicious) cookie. Ultimately, when you crave that cookie, your craving itself is telling you that you need nourishment (whether it be in the form of actual food or simply emotional nourishment which is perfectly okay as well). Many clients report that they eat a lot more of a specific food when they categorize that food as off-limits. On the flipside, when they satisfy their craving instead of pushing

90 | 25A Black Market Issue

it away, they consume less and avoid the emotional discomfort that comes with “failing” (by giving in when they were trying so hard to hold out). The take away message here is that it is important to tune into your cravings. Start paying attention to WHAT you are eating as well as WHY you are eating. The psychology behind food is just as important as the food itself. It is important to practice “mindful eating.” Press the pause button; ask yourself if you are actually hungry or if you are looking for something that food cannot give you. With practice, you will be able to decipher whether a craving is coming from a positive place or negative place. The bottom line is that cravings are our body’s ways of telling us something. The challenge is learning our bodies well enough to know WHAT it is that they are telling us. Sharestates

An Idea That is Revolutionizing Real Estate

F

By Ryan Wilk

or any investor, experienced or new, the act of personally investing in real estate has had many limitations. Historically, real estate investment has been limited to institutional investors or families who have owned property for decades. The only options for individual investors seemed to be owning their own investment property or buying into a REIT. However, investing in NYC real estate is quickly becoming accessible to many investors with the innovative platform at Sharestates.com, which matches real estate developers & rehabbers with investors. There is no other organization in New York bettersuited to running this platform than the team at Sharestates. Located in Great Neck, New York, Sharestates is founded by Allen Shayanfekr, Raymond Y. Davoodi and Radni Davoodi. Allen, who firmly believes real estate crowdfunding will one day represent a significant part of every investor's portfolio, brings the legal and securities knowledge. The Davoodi brothers come with over

92 | 25A Black Market Issue

ten years of experience each, through their real estate solutions company Atlantis. These Long Island locals have been crowdfunding since before it was even a ‘thing’, syndicating real estate through traditional methods. It was a natural fit to bring their proven real estate investing process online, focusing on the same core values that helped Atlantis succeed over the past 12 years: quality, honesty and customer service. Sharestates launched in July 2014 allowing a broader market to invest in the real estate opportunities that were only previously accessible to the ultra wealthy. Now, by registering with Sharestates.com, an individual can easily invest in some of the most lucrative real estate deals (mostly in the greater NYC area) yielding doubledigit returns, and collateralized by the real estate itself. Sharestates and their multi billion dollar institutional investor partners do the hard work of underwriting each deal, while the individual investor can invest online alongside those large investors — starting with as little as $1000.

Sharestates offers two kinds of real estate investments: debt and equity. Historically, debt investments have carried less risk. If a borrower (the real estate developer or rehabber) were to default on their loan, the investor would be able to take over the property through foreclosure. All of Sharestates’ debt investments have yielded at least a 10% net annual return to their investors. On the flip side, equity investments, historically a riskier investment, have been notorious for higher yields — upwards of 40% net annual returns. Regardless of whether a debt or equity investment, Sharestates puts each investment through a strict risk assessment process that covers both the property and the borrower. In addition, their institutional partners review each investment with their own process, putting most loans through a dual underwriting system. Once an investment opportunity is approved, both Sharestates and their institutional partners invest. After the real estate closing, Sharestates then sells their investment position to individual investors on Sharestates.com — allowing the individual investors’ capital to start yielding a return immediately. Sharestates has taken a

democratic approach to real estate investing, with a goal to make the process as accessible as trading stocks through an online brokerage account. Per founder Raymond Y. Davoodi, “Our vision for Sharestates was to bring Wall Street real estate deals to Main Street investors.” Less than two years after the Company’s launch, this goal has been reached... and with great success. Exclusive real estate investments are now available to a much broader market than ever before. While stocks have the ability to fluctuate with extreme volatility, creating high levels of stress, investors can count on the real estate being a much more stable and lowstress investment approach. People like knowing that they can visit and tangibly see their investment anytime. With the experience necessary to succeed in the real estate market, Sharestates has already proven great success as a company, and to their investors. In the past year alone, Sharestates facilitated over $100 million in originations over 100 projects and has returned over $25 million to its investors. In 2015, their investors took home an average of 10.4% net annualized returns with monthly distributions and no defaults. You can start building your real estate investment portfolio by registering at sharestates.com.

fter 38 years in the event industry, Michael Cerbelli has solidified his place at the top of his game and the master of his craft. And this passion for extravagance and performance started at an early age for Michael. “I wanted to become a performer and then I realized how much I loved the back-end of it, the production end, putting the show together and what happens behind the scenes… I love being behind the scenes. I love being the director… Everything you do is a stage. Its making an experience happen from beginning to end.” Michael recently organized one of the largest Bar Mitzvahs New York City has ever seen, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. “The vision with the parents was it to be all about their son. Make it his day, make him feel special. Looking at the thought that they had and doodling on the board, we wrote down the ideas… and these ideas, it’s a seed; its planted into the dirt and these visions come alive… we take it and create what we want with it.” The Hot List is Michael’s trademark seminar where he presents the newest innovations in the event industry. “People would not share ideas… And this didn’t make sense to me at all because no one can do everything in this industry… It’s been very successful for the event industry because people are thankful they can just come to one spot, 94 | 25A Black Market Issue

Building on my name, on Cerbelli, and saying ‘this is where you’re going to get the best events, the best product, the most educated team of people that care about your event. My goal is to create a corral of people, I’d like to see within the next 10 years, a staff of at least 30-50 people that are producing some of the best meetings and social events in the world. I’m looking to leave this mark on the industry.” Despite his record of legendary event production and game-changing collaboration, the most striking thing about Michael Cerbelli is his genuine desire to fulfill the wildest dreams of his clients. “Giving people that one memory, that one special night in their lives that they’ll never forget – that’s what stands out to me… If you have the right team, they can create that magic for you… I always say to my team ‘if somebody asks for a monkey on a high-wire across 5th Avenue, don’t say no. Figure out how we can do it.’” And if anybody could do it, it would be Michael Cerbelli. mcapproved.com

ike the iconic Duran Duran 1980s hit song Is there something I should know? we are always Looking to understand what people think and thanks to the ReviewMe team there is now one application that can review the favorite business in your area across multiple review platforms in one go.

According to a survey by Zendesk, 87 percent of consumers share positive experiences that they have had with others, with more and more consumers using social media as the platform of choice to spread the word. Additionally, 78 percent of American internet users between ages 18-64 acknowledge the significance online reviews have on their decision to make a purchase. However, there are many popular review sites, with no particular one having a monopoly on the review market. As a result, when a user wants to share their quality experience, they either just reach one or individually open up these various platforms to post reviews one-by-one in a time consuming process. In the past, those users who posted their experiences on multiple review sites had to either download multiple apps, which each took up space on a smartphone or tablet, or register accounts with each individual entity. With ReviewMe, powered by EZBZ, Inc., users can now register in one place to review their favorite local businesses just once and then have the review appear on multiple platforms including Yelp, Yellow Pages, Yahoo and Google to name a few. For businesses who want to enroll in the app, all they need to do is download it from either the Apple App store or on Google Play or visit ReviewMe’s 96 | 25A Black Market Issue

website, www.plsreviewme.com. Once registered, a business can then easily invite users to join through a variety of methods, including a widget which can be added to their websites. Established in 2011, EZBZ is a social and honest marketplace where users post whenever they seek out a product or service, and responses are generated in the form of competitive bids from local businesses. Once a query is entered, EZBZ identifies and notifies local vendors that offer that product or service, sending them a request allowing them to respond with pricing and availability. Users typically begin receiving responses from businesses in minutes and, in many cases, with accurate pricing, thus saving the consumer time spent making phone calls, comparing prices or searching online. EZBZ’s goal is to offer its users a solution that is simple, efficient and affordable, while empowering thousands of local businesses that now have an equal opportunity to bid for a consumer’s business. When a review is posted on the ReviewMe app for a business, EZBZ will then alert the business, such as for example a restaurant, that a dining review was posted. The ReviewMe customer support team then checks the review for its validity before distributing it to the various platforms the app posts onto. In the event someone uses ReviewMe to post a negative review which is confirmed as genuine by customer support, businesses have the opportunity to respond to that review through the app. That response will then be posted on the same platforms the reviews were sent to simultaneously. myezbz.com

Kenny Scharf in his Cosmic Cavern

Artist Kenny Scharf And His Fantastic World of Art

T

By Victoria R. Crosby | Photos Courtesey of Nassau County Museum Art

here is an exciting new exhibit at the Nassau County Museum of Art, featuring the work of artist Kenny Scharf. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1958, Scharf became known in the art world in New York in the early 1980s, with his colorful, cartoon inspired imagery, drawn from television and pop culture in science fiction, particularly the Jetsons and the Flinstones. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1980.

The installation at the exhibit, the Cosmic Cavern, is a recreation of his former Brooklyn studio, with day-glo colors splattered onto walls, furniture and other objects.

Curated by Museum Director Karl E. Willers Phd, and the staff of the museum, the exhibit opened in April with a preview party attended by Kenny Scharf. He will return for the museum’s annual fundraising ball, An Evening of Glamorous Graffiti, on Saturday June 11. The gala event will be catered by Robbins Wolf, with music by the Alex Donner Orchestra. There will be an after party, the Late Cosmic Party, for guests and young trendsetters, with DJ Scott Ewalt, who is a good friend of Kenny Scharf.

Works of Kenny Scharf have been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the USA and Europe. He has designed night clubs and album covers for The B52’s, created gift items based on his popular donut paintings.

Kenny is quoted as saying “One very important guiding principal to my work is to reach out beyond the elitist boundaries of fine art and connect to popular culture through my art.”

Also part of the current exhibit is Glamorous Graffiti, works by contemporaries of Kenny Scharf, including an 1988 portfolio of five silk screened prints by Keith Haring. Films of the early 1980s graffiti and urban culture include; Downtown 81, Wild Style and Style Wars, are also in this exhibition.

Nassau County Museum of Art, which is just off Northern Boulevard, route 25A, is housed in the former Frick Estate on beautiful grounds adorned with an outdoor sculpture gallery of many artists, including Fernando Botera, and restored formal gardens. The one hundred and forty five acres of museum grounds was originally owned by poet William Cullen Bryant, who was also a lawyer, conservationist, political activist, patron of the arts and a preservationist. He made Roslyn his home in 1843, living in the house, Cedermere, which overlooks Hempstead Harbor, and has been restored to its original glory by the Roslyn Landmark Society. The Bryant Library is just down the road on Bryant Avenue. Much of Bryant’s original acreage is now part of NCMA, so it is fitting that this lovely mansion and grounds are being cared for in a way Bryant would have approved.

In 1900 architect Odgen Codman Jr., was commissioned to design and build the house by Lloyd Steven Bryce who had purchased the property. Then in 1919 co-founder of US Steel Corporation, Henry Clay Frick, purchased the house and grounds for his son Childs Frick and his wife Francis Dixon Frick. They raised their four children there, and four years after Frick’s death at age 81 in 1965, the property was purchased by Nassau County. Former United State Ambassador Arnold Saltzman suggested to then Nassau County Executive Tom Gulotta, that the property would make a wonderful art museum. The museum now bears the names of Ambassador Saltzman and his wife Joan.

The museum is at One Museum Drive, off Route 25A in Roslyn Harbor. For information about the Museum Ball, or any exhibits or programs call 516 484-9337, or visit nassauamuseum.org. May 2016 | 99

This encounter led to the drawing ‘Old Man’ and ‘Old Man 2.’

As more and more collectors became owners of his The Myths of Man series of portrait realism drawings and paintings, he is pleased to share his 2015 success stories.

Fame for ‘Old Man’ What a year for the drawing! ‘Old Man’ won the Salmagundi/AAPL Presidents Award at the highly respected Salmagundi Galleries 87th Grand National Exhibition in New York City. In addition, it won Honorable Mentions in two prestigious gallery shows, took second place in the Nationwide American Artists Professional Future Art Masters Awards, was shown at the Untitled Gallery at Miami Art Basel, and was simultaneously featured as the cover of ArtVoices magazine along with a four page article on Larry.

hat a wonderful year this has been for Larry Aarons, our 2015 profile of the Long Island artist. larryaaronsart.com

In January, Larry was named as ‘One of the top artists to watch in 2015.’ Let’s see what has gone on since then. 2015 started off for Larry as he strolled the beachfront streets of Santa Monica, CA. There he saw a homeless man whose face Larry could not stop staring at. He approached the old man and asked if could sketch him. Although hesitant, he said only for a few minutes. The minutes passed, and as the old man got up to leave, Larry offered him some money. Turned 100 | 25A Black Market Issue

Yes, there is more! The United Nations in NYC interviewed Larry about his art, ‘The Myths of Man.’ ‘Old Man,’ along with other award winning portraits, was featured. See it on YouTube; type in Larry Aarons.

Old Man - Conte Drawing

Robert De Niro - Charcoal Drawing

FAMOUS – Hollywood: The Greatest Myth of All Not only is Larry an artist, but he is also a part-time actor. At a recent movie shoot, he was on the set with Academy Award winner Robert De Niro. The chance encounter led Larry to seek out Mr. De Niro’s business manager so he could show a drawing he did of Mr. De Niro.

Larry has always been sensitive to the world around us. He created a special series of assemblages titled “Defense of the Species.” DOTS raises consciousness about the beauty and the right of all creatures to exist on our planet. The art is controversial, and can be checked out on his website tab Defense of the Species. It’s worth the time.

Once the manager saw it, he rushed to show Mr. De Niro. De Niro was taken by the likeness, and set a time to meet with the artist. As they say,” the rest is history.” His drawing is now in Mr. De Niro’s collection.

The assemblages are a stark combination of reclaimed animal skulls with defense masks, awaking the viewer’s inner spirit to feel the need to protect all species. DOTS will be shown at NYC Art Scope Show in March. He actually produced a book on this art so check it out contact Larry. A percent of sales will go to WWF.

After all this we’re exhausted. This didn’t include the portrait commissions he’s done. Larry definitely was the one to watch in 2015!

Larry just found out that he is going to part of a major art show in Marbella, Spain this summer. I think we want to go along to cover it.

What a year! So what’s coming for 2016? The first quarter of the year is already busy. Larry just finished a new series: The Myths of Art Deco. And Scarf Dancer a new pastel drawing is already in a show in Naples Fla.

Good luck Larry with everything! We’ll catch-up again soon.

He loves doing portraits for people. He has been included in the new book “101 Contemporary Artists.”

Larry supports our military and donates a percentage of his art sales to the US Navy Seal Foundation.

Hamptons Contemporary A Luxury Living Fair

A

By W.A. Muller

rt Fair Guru Rick Friedman will debut Hamptons Contemporary at the Southampton Elks Fairgrounds (605 County Road 39) on June 3-5, 2016, bringing the first of its kind international, world class interior/exterior-design/ décor fair to the Hamptons. Nine years after creating the first and most successful art fair on the East End, ArtHamptons, Rick Friedman has turned his deft touch to design/décor in the resort paradise that literally defines American luxury living. As he did with ArtHamptons and other fairs across the country, Friedman plans once again to set the standard for fairs celebrating the form and function of modern luxury living with Hamptons Contemporary. Explaining his transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional art fair exhibition, Friedman notes, “After I sold the fine art fairs, I realized that I may have been too myopic in defining art as what was on the walls. I realized that it was about beauty meeting inspiration and I took a higher level of abstraction, wherein the canvas is the entire home and the paint is defined as all the elements and product categories that comprise and beautify the home. Hamptons Contemporary showcases that wider vision.” 102 | 25A Black Market Issue

The 40,000 square foot Hamptons Contemporary pavilion will showcase Friedman’s vision indeed, as 150+ exhibitors have already committed to Hamptons Contemporary. From world recognized architects to celebrated interior decorators, from luxury furniture and appliance manufacturers to one-of-a-kind design artisans, from state-of-the-art pool and landscape designers to home theater experts, Hamptons Contemporary will celebrate every aspect of luxury home décor and design, both interior and exterior. Further support for what will undoubtedly prove to be the most celebrated luxury fair in the country is the unprecedented Lead Media Partnership of Hamptons Contemporary by Architectural Digest, the iconic Condé Nast publication’s first foray in support of any Hamptons event. Joining Architectural Digest as Regional Media Sponsor is HC&G (Hamptons Cottages & Gardens) with other Media Sponsors that include Hamptons Magazine, Beach Magazine, Long Island Pulse, Hamptons. com, Hamptons Beachouse, 25A Magazine, and the soon debuting Shelter-The Hamptons. Official Show Sponsors include Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Sub-Zero/Wolf Appliances, Lynx Grills, and Ciuffo Cabinetry, with Participating Sponsor Health-Ade Kombucha Probiotic Tea. hamptonscontemporary.com
