PUBLISHER'S NOTE

“Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease have all too short a date.”—William Shakespeare, “Sonnet 18” If the immortal Bard could see the magnificent beaches and marinas that bustle throughout the summer in the Hamptons and Long Island and marvel at the New York City of today with sunlight gleaming off majestic skyscrapers and the dew on the morning grass in Central Park, he would rush to his quill to express his thrall and admiration for our great Metropolis and our picturesque summer getaways. Fox Business News Anchor Cheryl Casone sees our city at the crack of dawn every day that she is reporting on the state of the US economy and NYC, the economic engine of the world. Along with business, summer provides time for leisure to explore amazing art exhibits. This issue, as always, features talented artists, including epicurean artistry from Tuscany Steakhouse and the Jue Lan Club, located inside the infamous Limelight Dance Club. Jue Lan invited us to enjoy their lovely outdoor garden, delicious Asian Fusion dishes (ume!) and my favorite, owner Robert Collin's spicy take on a Moscow Mule. We were also regaled by publicist extraordinaire Bruce Lynn about his wild days with club owner Peter Gatien at the height of Limelight's popularity when David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna were all regular spectators and participants in the New York Club Scene. On our website, NYC "IT Girl" Erika Bogner offers a list of current New York hot spots to chill at this summer. Summer is here! Love blooms and hope is eternal. From The Hamptons, where Polo Season kicks off to NYC, the greatest city in the world. We have so much to be thankful for. Top of that list is you, our loyal (and new) readers for the opportunity you give us to delight, inform and entertain you

W

hen New York Night Owls in Times Square are winding up their nights, FOX Business Network Anchor Cher yl Casone is usually getting into work. “Times Square is very entertaining...at 2:45AM. You see it all you really see it. A lot of the times when I'm coming to work people are just leaving the bars so I see the tail end of the night before, put it that way. Also the streets are empty and that's kind of cool because you don't see that. The City That Never Sleeps also provides Casone with plenty of business news stories. Casone co-hosts FBN:AM beginning at 5AM/ ET where she is first to report on the state of the US economy: “Nationally, things have gotten a lot better, you’ve got less regulation, the tax package that just got passed has helped a lot of lower income workers in other states you with bonuses and better wages – so that's a good thing... you've got unemployment now at 3.8 per cent, incomes are rising – not as much as we would like to see but wages are better – retirement accounts are

not stopping whether it's robotics, artificial intelligence, or transportation. We're talking about flying taxis by 2020! That can all be a reality and it will be. Technology is just completely changing everything and how we live our lives. Do you go to a store anymore of just order on Amazon?” “I’ve been hosting FBN:AM at FOX Business Network for a year now. I really love hosting the first show of the day because it's the first shot at the news. I love being first! (laugh). So much news is happening right now you just never know what is happening overnight so I really love the fact that I've got that show and it's going really well! We've really seen our audience grow and our ratings have moved up a lot, quite substantially, in just the past year so I'm really proud of that.” A former flight attendant, right out of college, Casone parlayed that personal work experience to become one of Fox's most knowledgeable reporters on the Airline Industry as a whole. “I appreciate that my colleagues whether it is Tucker Carlson or Stuart Varney lean on me for aviation stories. I appreciate it because it’s another part of my past life I can bring here. I don't love checked bag fees any more than anybody else or the delays and there are all kinds of bad things

I really love hosting the first show of the day

because it’s the first shot at the news.

better-looking based on how the markets have done, the numbers are there to support that – whatever your politics are – that the economy is doing better because of things like less regulation and pro-business policies. Seeing GDP consistently above 2 percent means the economy is definitely a lot stronger.” ... the current mood on Wall Street: I think anything that is a fiscally conservative policy, Wall Street is going to like no matter if it is coming from the Governor, the Mayor or the President. So, if you are a fiscal conservative you believe in less regulation and pro-business policies so those are the two things they want from anyone. ...and important business trends to look out for: “We talk about it every day on the show... honestly, technology. That train is going down the track like a high speed locomotive and it's

about travel but I do still have a fondness for the airline industry.” As for working in New York City, Casone couldn't be happier. “It is a dream come true for me. I was a business reporter in San Francisco at Channel 4 KRONTV – and I loved my time in San Francisco, but I would sit and watch Maria Bartiromo on TV and I really wanted to be in New York because this is the center of the world when it comes to business, finance, banking and Wall Street so when I finally got here in 2004, that was the ultimate goal. And I still love New York. I actually live on the Upper West Side of New York now but I just love all of Manhattan. I think this is going to be a permanent place for me to live now. I just love that you meet so many people from different cultures and there is so much to do here. Months can go by where I don't even leave Manhattan. It's crazy!” Casone not only gets to work beside the

talented Maria Bartiromo, she also gets to work with aforementioned elder statesman and much beloved FOX Business Network host, Stuart Varney. One of the true class acts in the Broadcast Business. “I've known Stu for years...I adore him I call him Stu, I love him. He's one of the first people I met when I came to the Fox News Channel in 2006 I joined the FNC a year before we launched the business network so he was the first person I met in the building that day. I call him my first friend!” One thing Casone doesn't get to do with many of her friends is...enjoy late night dinners!

hard, you commit, you are an upstanding citizen. I think a lot of my values as a person come from being a Texan and I still consider myself a Texan... now when I get off the plane in Dallas I keep thinking to myself why is everybody being so nice to me? (laugh) Because that's the thing about Texas, you know? That southern charm is a true thing." FOX Business has even let Casone keep up with the Joneses of the NFL. “FOX Business has allowed me to report on the business of sports and I've covered five Super Bowls now. I'm a Football junkie and a huge Dallas Cowboys

“I host a 5am show, I get up at 2am every day... all my friends are like 'Can you get off this schedule?' and I say no, I really like what I'm doing... I like a morning show and I do both of our morning shows. I go to bed at 6pm that 's really the only thing that gets tough – I don't have a social life at night but it’s fine. It’s a funny conversation because people say 'When do you go to bed?' and I reply 6pm (laugh) so they want to go have dinner and I'm asking can you do that dinner at 3pm? 3:30pm?” Being a hard worker committed to her craft – no matter what the hour- is something Casone credits to her parents and her home state of Texas. “I was definitely raised with a strong work ethic my grandfather owned and operated a meat processing company – you know we worked hard our family, my father was the same way... you work

fan (laugh) I've gotten to meet some of my football heroes... I met Roger Staubach, I was like wow hello wow… getting to know Jerry Jones...Charlotte Jones, his daughter who is now one of the most powerful women in the NFL... that's been a really fun piece of the journey for me... oh Joe Theisman...I was having coffee with him – Troy Aikman that was a fun one... and Dan Marino, Dan Marino is a hoot, love him.” Sports Reporter Casone is actually quite an athlete herself. “It's been really fun for me because I do triathlons and marathons so I really can get that other part of my life fulfilled. We sponsor the 2XU New York City Triathlon every summer, FOX Business does, so what's cool about that is that not only do I compete in the triathlon every year but my colleague and I, Liz Claman do some good. She’s a big supporter and

42 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

champion fundraiser for "Building Homes for Heroes", a local charity that builds custom homes for veterans, so that's another fun side of it. On a personal level I actually get to do the sport and then we do segments on the triathlon and Liz does segments about some of the veterans that have been helped by some of her work.” Like most New Yorkers Casone is in love with Central Park. "I consider Central Park my savior because I didn't grow up in NYC or the East Coast- to be out in the park, I'm out there probably 4-5 days a week, gives me sanity, just because I love the trees! And since I’m a runner and a tri-athlete, for me to have that park is a mental savior. I look at Central Park as the gift that just keeps on giving!” An always busy reporter, Casone says that after a long day that there's nothing better than curling up with Milo... her rescue cat! Yep. Casone, who is a major supporter of the ASPCA and North Shore Animal League, along with her famous pal Beth Stern, readily admits she is a cat person. “Milo is a street cat from the Bronx. One of my friends was teaching up there and there were stray cats that were living on the roof of this building and one day she kept seeing this little tiny kitten just sitting there by himself. She finally just walked up and grabbed him and called me and said “I have a cat.” So, now I have a cat. (laugh) I'm definitely an animal person for sure. We had 25 cats at one point on my Grandfather's farm in Texas when I was a kid. Guess I'm stuck with it!” But more than anything, Casone is a peopleperson, dedicated as an anchor to helping her viewers understand business – and as an author of the critically acclaimed business book, “The Comeback: How Today’s Moms Reenter the Workplace Successfully” to helping people, women and baby boomers in particular, keep the American Economy going strong – by working! “The book (The Comeback) actually came out of my work at FOX because I was doing weekly segments on FOX & Friends, when unemployment was at 10 percent. The Comeback is about how to help people find jobs – my whole brand for a while, at least with those segments on FOX & Friends, was to find people work... people were struggling to find anything and it was during the recession – which was caused by Wall Street as we all know and so the segment just really took off and people just started to ask me on the street or in the airports for advice. I would get emails from people who were saying, “Hey, could you look at my resume and I've got this much experience” and so I sort of really started getting into helping people find work.”

Claude’s at the Southampton Inn Appoints New Chef James Carpenter BY ELIZABETH ELSTON

C

laude’s Restaurant is pleased to announce the appointment of James Carpenter, a navy veteran, as the restaurant’s Executive Chef as they re-open for their full-time summer hours on Saturday, May 19th. He brings the slow food movement and innovative energy to the dining experience at this up and coming restaurant. As Executive Chef, Carpenter oversees the restaurant’s newly renovated dining room and outside dining patios, which highlights signature American fare including seafood, salads, and seasonal features – as well as its special events, wine pairing dinners, Restaurant Week offerings, and more. Chef Carpenter also oversees the restaurant’s onsite catering events ranging in size from small meetings to large events of up to 400 people. A veteran in hospitality and some of the East End’s finest kitchens, Chef Carpenter brings nearly

27 years of culinary experience. Prior to joining the team at Claude’s, Carpenter served as executive chef at best-known eateries, including Della Femina, The American Hotel, Page at 63 Main, The Living Room and East Hampton Point. He also spent time working with notable chefs such as Susan Spicer in New Orleans at Bayona, Louis Osteen at Charleston’s Louis’ and Gunther Seeger at Atlanta’s Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. On his move to Claude’s, Chef Carpenter said, “I’m very excited to be back in Southampton where I started at Savana’s. I am also looking forward to creating an amazing destination restaurant.” Dede Gotthelf, the owner of the Southampton Inn says, "it is such a pleasure to have one of the premier food professionals on the east end as executive chef at Claude’s. For the first time in ten years, Claude’s will not only be serving breakfast and outdoor lunch, but now a superb dinner inside or outside under the stars, featuring many

of the foods and ingredients grown locally from our farmers and sourced from our fishermen. " A firm believer in using locally sourced ingredients, Chef Carpenter is creating the lunch and dinner menu to showcase many local farms and farmers. Both menus are designed specifically using fresh, in-season ingredients, and include such dishes as Peconic Pride Oysters with shallot cucumber mignonette, Rope Cultured Mussels Chimichurri style, Satur Farm Little Gem Salad, Pan Roasted Day Boat Halibut with wild mushroom ragu and truffle potato puree, and Sheep Ricotta Gnudi with mini lamb meatballs. “It is very easy to make excellent food when you are surrounded by the great farms and seafood. We support them and everyone wins,” Carpenter says.

T-Bar Steak & Lounge CLASSIC DISHES WITH A MODERN TWIST IN THE UPPER EAST SIDE RESTAURANT BY SALOME LANGVIN

U

pper East Side hotspot T-Bar Steak & Lounge, which has been warmly embraced by New Yorkers since it first opened its doors in 2007, is noted for its perfect execution of classic dishes. The restaurant’s Executive Chef Ben Zwicker, previously of the Four Seasons, Aureole and Petrossian, makes T-Bar’s classic steakhouse fare relevant and exciting, while also putting his unique twist onto other classic dishes. Owner Tony Fortuna celebrated 20 years of owning the space on the corner of 73rd and 3rd Avenue in April 2015, previously known as The Lenox Room. T-Bar is a well-loved mainstay, still buzzing with its loyal following night after night.

48 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

Fortuna says there is no magic formula to achieve this sort of long-running success. “I think guests trust our kitchen and love our relaxed but vibrant atmosphere.” Diners are able to begin a meal at T-Bar with its unique spin on chicken wings Angel Chicken Wings with a Tamarind Glaze, or enjoy its classic take on Guacamole to split with the table. T-Bar also redefines the classic Kale Salad by including apple and sesame into it while drizzling it in a sumptuous chili-lime vinaigrette. Also available on its delectable appetizer menu are the popular Seared Spanish Octopus, Yellowfin Tuna Tartar, and Vietnamese Shrimp Roll. A meal at T-Bar Steak & Lounge would not be complete without ordering a favorite from The

Steak Bar, which features an impressive range of superbly-cooked Certified Black Angus Cuts of beef including its Black Angus Porterhouse for two served with your choice of Steak Sauce, Béarnaise Sauce or Poivre Sauce. T-Bar offers wealth of additional American classics including its signature Crusted Tuna served with Soy, Wasabi Rémoulade and Seaweed Salad or its Roast Free Range Chicken with truffle jus. Cap the evening off with irresistible desserts like the must-have Banana Parfait Mille Feuilles, with coconut and caramel sauce or the decadent Chocolate Sundae served with brownie, chocolate sauce and cream. Jue Lan Club Review BY MELISSA CLARK

W

hen I think of the old Limelight dance club, housed in a church on 49 West 20th street in New York City, I think of huge celebrities, Club Kids, excitement and the unexpected. The Limelight was the hottest spot for clubbing in the late 80's late and 90's. Some would call it the younger sister of Studio 54. The feeling of both atmospheres was a star-studded "Hollywood" vibe for the party-loving denizens of the City That Never Sleeps. On any given night in the 80's, you might see celebrities like Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, and John Belushi. The 90's boasted such stars as heartthrob Johnny Depp and the

50 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. Presently, it is the home of the Jue Lan Club. Robert Collins, one of the owners, and designer, opened this iconic eating establishment over three years ago and has turned it into one of the finest authentic Asian cuisine restaurants in Manhattan. "This building is historic," said Collins. "I wanted to keep its authenticity yet create a new vibe" he continued. We were served our dinner in the old "bubble room." Back in the 90's, the club would pump music, while foam pumped throughout the room making the night a bubbly fantasy. Now the room is decked out with elegant green velvet booths and exposed brick for that quintessential cool New York City look. Inspired by Shanghai, the chefs prepare dishes such as Edamame Dumplings steamed with Miso

sauce and truffle oil. The house dish Chilean Seabass pan-seared is crisp to perfection with black bean sauce and fresh garlic. Let's not forget the signature crowd-pleasing cocktails. The Lychee Martini is Grey Goose vodka, lychee puree & Coco Lopez served chilled with a luscious lychee. The house Martini is a Shanghai Mule: Tito's vodka, fresh pineapple juice, lime juice, and raspberry puree, topped with Ginger beer. The relaxed ambiance, fun history, incredible food, and amazingly creative drinks will inspire any group of savvy New Yorkers to find a way through the velvet ropes of the Jue Lan Club to get inside (or outside, in their garden area) to join the party until the wee hours. ot only is French born Eric Demarchelier a well-known painter, but he is also the owner of one of the most iconic Upper East Side restaurants, authentic French Bistro Demarchelier’s, celebrating its 25 year anniversary this 2017. Talent runs in the Demarchelier family. Brother Patrick De-marchelier is a world renown fashion photographer while Eric Demarchelier has received acclaim as a painter. Eric’s artistic style encompasses figurative, geometric abstraction and abstract expres-sionism, as well as landscape and portrait painting. Born and raised in Normandy, French restaurant owner Eric Demarchelier has lived in New York

52 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

THE BEST OF THE CITY since 1977, the same year he opened the very first location of his eponymous restaurant. After closing the original location on Lexington Avenue, Demarchelier re-opened the restaurant in 1992 on 86th street and his regular customers followed. The restaurant boasts a colorful and cozy environment, with artwork by Eric Demarchelier himself on the walls. He began painting in the 1990s and has been rotating the art exhibited in the restaurant every year since then. Apart from the rotating artwork, Demarchelier has remained consistent throughout the years, both in terms of ambiance and menu, though part of the responsibility of running the restaurant has been pledged to his daughter Emily Demarchelier. More bourgeois than bohemian, Demarchelier’s

cheerfully noisy, cozy quarters are home to a menu of mainly familiar hits from French bistro fare, like standout French onion soup and briny moules mariniere au vin blanc, in a creamenriched broth. Main courses also hew to the classics; duck confit is served over a hearty mix of tomato- and tarragon-scented flageolets. For pure French luxe, sample the Sole Meuniere. Flourdredged and pan-fried in butter, this tender fillet is accom-panied by a grilled lemon half and fat wedges of boiled potato, tossed in plenty of butter and chives.

Amaranth A MEDITERRANEAN OASIS BY ANN GRENIER

L

ocated just off Madison Avenue on 62nd Street, between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue, Amaranth offers a fusion of original Italian food and French food, with a large portion of specialty items imported directly from Italy and France. Owned by Paola Pedrignani and Francois Marchand, this year marks the 19th year for Amaranth—a testament to the quality, service, and warm ambiance found at this upscale Mediterranean restaurant, opened in 1999. “We’re renowned for our classics, like our famous Focaccia Robiola, baked in our brick oven and served with Robiola cheese – there would be an outcry if we took this off the menu! But we also constantly evolve,” says owner Francois Marchand. Other fixtures on the menu include the Steak Tartare, which is prepared in front of customers to ensure freshness and the right balance of spices, and the Octopus Carpaccio – fresh, quality seafood from the Mediterranean served on a bed of greens.

54 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

There are also a number of healthy, light choices served with the highest quality ingredients – like the Whole Maine Lobster Salad, served with radicchio, endive, arugula, cremini mushrooms and citrus vinaigrette. The Pan Seared Nantucket Sea Scallops with mushrooms, braised leeks and lemon white wine sauce always impresses. Amaranth’s pastas are homemade and are available whole wheat and gluten free. The dessert menu is hard to resist – from the Mille Feuille Napolean with mixed berries and crème anglaise to the Cantucci al Vin Santo – a homemade biscotti served with Vin Santo Wine for dipping. Amaranth is named after the deep red-rose colored flowers of the Amaranth plant, owner Paola Pedrignani says. “The deep, wine red color is warm and welcoming – we thought it represents the way our restaurant feels brilliantly.” Customers come to Amaranth for the full dining experience – excellent service, elegant décor, and the casual, home-away-from-home feel.

CHEF JESÚS NÚÑEZ The Sea Fire Grill’s Superstar B Y CHR I STO PHE R A. PAPE

C

hef Jesús Núñez has been called many things—provocative, artistic, passionate, eccentric— but never boring. For over a decade he’s made a name for himself in his native Madrid and now New York as a forward-thinking culinary rebel, combining daring flavors and textures with his street-art style to produce delectable creations that guide diners’ palates in new sensory directions.

58 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

Chef Núñez is currently the Executive Chef for The Sea Fire Grill Restaurant, where he oversees culinary operations. Previously Chef Núñez served as Corporate consulting Chef of Mangia, 41 North hotel and corporate chef of Socarrat restaurant group and Quimeria Think Group, and Executive Chef of Barraca and Melibea Restaurants. Having arrived on the New York culinary scene nearly four years ago, Chef Núñez, described as the “Spanish enfant terrible,”

by New York Magazine, brought his unique culinary vision and artistic style to the Upper West Side with his restaurant Gastroarte (fka Graffit). Here Chef Núñez served playful and contemporary takes on traditional Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine, earning the distinction of “Key Newcomer” in the Culinary Innovator category of the 2012 Zagat Guide. We sat down with Chef Núñez to find out his philosophy and creative vision for Seafire Grill:

Where do you source your seafood from? Our seafood is locally-sourced. We use a variety of suppliers with most of our seafood coming from Massachusetts. What do you look for when buying fish/ seafood? This really depends on the type of seafood you’re shopping for but when we’re buying fish, there are some key indicators to look for to ensure that our guests are getting the freshest fish possible. The first is by looking at the fish’s eyes. We want the eyes to be clear because if they’re cloudy, that’s a tell-tale sign that it’s losing its freshness. Then we move onto the skin and we want it to be slightly moistened and tight. If it’s something like oysters or clams, we want to make sure the shells have been kept cold and that they aren’t cracked or opened in any way. We never compromise the integrity of our seafood and if you’re coming into the restaurant, you can rest assured that we’ve taken the time to identify and purchase the freshest seafood in the city. How do your offerings change throughout the year, according to season? As a chef I am constantly paying attention to the various seasons and it’s crucial to change your offerings according to that rotation. By doing so, you are guaranteeing the best quality of your ingredients and I want nothing less for my guests at The Sea Fire Grill. It’s also a lot of

fun to change things up every now and then. It allows me to be more creative, showcase more ingredients and get people excited about dishes that are only available for a limited amount of time. What are some of the most popular ingredients? Scallops, tuna, halibut, branzino, calamari, salmon. What’s an ingredient you’d love to use, but haven’t yet? I’d love to experiment with fennel pollen which

the Italians actually brought over to the US and ended up planting in California. Fennel pollen has an extraordinary taste that is absolutely different from what you get from a fennel seed. It’s used more sparingly and provides an incredibly unique floral flavor.

Tuscany Steakhouse THE ART OF FINE DINING

A

master class in the art of fine dining was in session as soon as our Publisher Chase Backer and his friend and colleague, Fox News Anchor Dr. Kelly Powers entered the elegant Tuscany Steakhouse on 117 West 58th St, a quick walk from Central Park, and were greeted by Steve the owner. Handshakes and hugs soon gave way to a walking tour through a happy and busy restaurant as Steve escorted his guests to a specially prepared "best table" in the house, surrounded by Northern Italian mural scenes, a fully stocked and beautiful looking wine cellar and authentic decor creating a soothing and magical environment. The unmistakable aroma of steak wafted through the restaurant as a nattily dressed waiter presented Chase with a bottle of one of the restaurant's finest wines. "Cabernet," was the answer as the waiter uncorked and poured the wine for Chase to sniff, swirl and study the bouquet. After swallowing, and pausing for dramatic effect, Chase nodded his hearty approval, "delicious." The meal had begun in earnest as Chase and

60 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

BY ADAM KLUGER Kelly shared pleasantries and agreed it was time to visit the kitchen and see what it was that was making everybody's mouth water. Steve took over for the head chef and expertly broiled a filet mignon and an enormous New York strip in the kitchen. As he ladled the juices of the strip on top, Chase nodded and commented, "The art." That was really all that needed to be said. It was well past time to sample the specialty of the house, which Chase and Kelly did with alacrity and enthusiasm. "The flavor," Dr. Kelly opined. "Perfect." Chase concurred. Sometimes, when one is dining at a fine restaurant, the less words the better. They tend to get in the way of the eating part of the festivities. As if the mouthwatering filet mignon and NY strip weren't enough, Steve marched over with a steaming platter of Seafood Linguine, another specialty with Lobster, shrimp, oysters and calamari bathed in an exquisite spicy tomato sauce. Dr. Kelly, always playful, asked Steve the proper way to eat spaghetti, with a fork alone or with a spoon for swirling. Steve smiled wide as Chase also took a bite and shared that the

dish reminded him of his own mother's Seafood Linguine recipe and that just like Tuscany, Chase's mom's version was wonderful too, because of the secret ingredient she always mixed in...love! Even legendary publicist Bruce Lynn was loving the proceedings as he got playfully scolded by Chase for paying more attention to his plate of linguini and lobster than his guests. Nobody is better than Bruce when it comes to working with and promoting NYC's best restaurants. So if he wants to concentrate more on the lobster- let him. He deserves it for sure! Dessert soon descended on the table with fresh fruit, cakes and cookies and whipped cream in a silver platter that could feed half of Manhattan. The tiramisu was the star of the show as afterdinner liqueurs were presented to a table of well fed and very happy journalists. On this night, Tuscany Steak House rolled out the red carpet and taught a lesson in fine dining and hospitality that will be cherished and not soon forgotten.

BBQ Season

MAKING THE SIDE DISH A STAR BY ANDREA CORREALE

S

ummer is approaching, and everyone is thinking about outdoor entertaining. As people break out their grills and cook up proteins like chicken, burgers, hot dogs, or steaks, I want to inspire you to make the side dish just as important and exciting; specifically, different types of salads. It’s time to introduce some fun, healthy salads to your barbeque to delight your guests. Radishes tend to be a “sleeper” vegetable – no one gives them much thought, but they are actually amazing. You can create a salad with radishes alone by chopping them up with your favorite dressing, or try something unexpected like a watermelon radish carpaccio. To do so, thinly slice the radishes with a mandolin and serve them with a quality extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, sea salt, and black pepper. You can also serve radishes with herbed goat cheese and citrus to offset the bitterness of the vegetables. I recommend Watermelon, Daikon, French Breakfast, Cherry Bell, or Easter Egg radishes – they’re all fantastic and are beautiful in color. People are used to seeing basic green beans as a BBQ side, but there are so many varieties of green beans to choose from, such as edamame or sugar snap peas. Dress them in different ways, such as Dijon mustard, sherry vinegar, and sliced raw almonds, or sesame oil, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and toasted sesame seeds. Carrots are another fabulous veggie that can take center stage at a barbeque. You can shred them, use baby carrots, or try some more exotic breeds like purple, red, yellow, and white carrots.

64 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

These vegetables can be grilled on the barbeque and served with a light yogurt dressing. Try using some Moroccan spices in your dressing for extra flavor. Another fun take on pasta salads is not using pasta at all. Zucchini noodles are extremely trendy right now as a carb-free substitute. You can also make “noodles” with other vegetables, such as sweet potatoes or squash. Make that the base for your dish – serve them warm as an accompaniment for your protein, or serve it cold with fresh herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil, and a bit of vinegar. Tomatoes are always a favorite, and there are so many varieties to choose from. You can go the traditional route and do a Caprese salad with sliced beefsteak tomatoes, or try something a bit more colorful. Visit a local farm stand and pick up some heirloom tomatoes – they’re visually more interesting as they come in different colors, shapes, and sizes. I love adding a cheese element to tomato-based salads, such as ricotta, gorgonzola, or fresh mozzarella, and serving them with onion, olive oil, vinegar and fresh herbs. This is a great alternative to a green salad as it holds its integrity for hours with no wilting. Kale is still a favorite alternative to the typical mixed green salad but it can be a bit too hearty for some, I have a trick to make this healthy green at hit! Next time marinate fresh chopped kale overnight in your favorite vinaigrette and toss with salad toppings when you are ready to serve. The dressing will help breakdown the rough texture of the kale while infusing it with flavor - your guests will want to know your secret!

Finally, cauliflower makes a delicious side. You can actually slice the whole head of cauliflower into “steaks.” Marinate them with Asian or Indian flavors, or do your own take on a peppercorncrusted steak. You can grill them right on the barbeque and they make fabulous side dishes. Remember that you can keep most of these salads at room temperature. If you make them ahead of time, even better – they’ll take on more flavor that way. With fresh, beautiful vegetables, your salads will no longer be swept aside, they’ll be crowd favorites at your next barbeque!

However, the true star proved to be their monumental series of seven helium balloons which were anchored onto the hotel’s legendary façade and seen from miles away. Improve Your Game of Life and Golf TRY THESE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EXERCISES BY BECCA TEBON, CPT, CHHC, LIFE COACH

T

hey say practice makes perfect, but that's not always the case. See, sometimes you just have to admit that you’re not quite as good as you’d like to be, and that there’s a distinct possibility that you never will be. When it comes to golf—and, by extension, life—recognizing what you can’t do can be just as important as being confident in what you can do. The triumph in either is in applying new tools and strategies to improve, every day. Golf has been called the game of kings, and for good reason: A game of golf can give your mind and body the royal treatment. We all know the game can be grueling and punishing both mentally and physically, but do you realize the amount of devotion, discipline and training that it takes to be #1 like Tiger Wood’s? Tiger, while achieving his highest ranks had an insane fitness regimen starting with a 4-mile run, then hitting the gym to lift, followed by hitting balls for two to three hours, playing a a round of golf, then work on his short game and finish up with another four

mile run. Some days, he’d even play basketball or tennis AFTER all of that. For those of you who just want to whoop your buddies butt, look hot on your date or sharpen your game so your the stud at the golf outing with the guys on the Old Course in Ireland, read and apply the tips in this article – IMMEDIATELY so they become habit forming, Iam going to strengthen your physical game and help prevent some major injuries at the same time. As for your twisted mental game, learning techniques to relax and truly enjoy the game are as crucial to developing a dominant top notch game as your physical conditioning. The good news is it's not difficult to build golf mental toughness and play at a higher level than you currently are. It takes just a bit of self awareness and some simple strat-egies. A good pre-shot routine helps you achieve a measure of success, thus avoid-ing disappointments while improving your performance. This tips can help reduce pressure and allows you to shoot lower golf scores.

Don’t set the bar too high when playing golf. This game is about accepting the result and having the desire to improve. Too higher expectations can cause pressure build up from within and frustrations when you under perform. Don't focus on the score and instead pay attention to the process and appreciate (little) progress. Make pre-round warm-up a habit. Adopt the culture of Tour pros who make their pre-round warm-up repetitive. There is a tendency for golfers to stop after getting to the first tee because you may feel you have done all the preparations for the round. Spend sufficient time warming up your mind and body as this will allow you to feel com-fortable during the game. Start warming up with putting. This allows your mind and body to synchronize for the game. The goal is to familiarize yourself with the speed of the greens. Start with long distance putts at varied distances aiming for the fringe or near the edge of the practice green.

Move your way up to putting whilst aiming at golf tees as a target. This helps in narrowing your focus as the target hole appears bigger during the game. Finally, hole ten short 2 foot putts in a row and listen to the ball falling in the hole. This is a great way of building your confidence in your putting. Prepare your muscles for the game by stretching. Prepare your body for the golfing challenge. Stretching helps get your muscles ready for the game. This prevents injuries and gets you ready for the round. Avoid static stretching during your warm up routine. Instead, use dynamic stretching increases your power output and get your mind and body sharp for the round. These type of exercises get your heart beating faster and prepares your body for anything. It can be walking briskly, skipping or doing simple jumping jacks. Now that we’ve got your mind in “Zenland,” let’s segway to that bod of yours, Don’t be offended, but hold on to your truth if the biggest exercise you get is going to the break room or bathroom.

If you’re one of my “desk potatoes” working long, grueling hours without any exercise or those of you who possess a basically sedentary lifestyle and forgo exercise in any form out of pure gym boredom or don’t know what to do, jump in-to these exercises. Whether you’re an avid golfer or my desk potato you can be prone to develop poor posture, joint and soft-tissue stiffness or tightness, which could lead to broken hips, painful neck or back syndromes, as well as spinal curvature disorders by your 60’s or 70’s— NOT FUN! These issues are very commonly observed in both rec-reational or competitive golfers. It is not uncommon to find golfers with poor thoracic (mid back), hip and shoulder mobility/stability, as well as mushy, flat glutes (yuck) and core weaknesses. Let’s tighten your belly, butt and give you a sexy back! With limited equipment you can perform these 5 exercises (below) in your home or while traveling. There are many specific exercises and stretches to correct these defi-cits. Best news is you don’t have to go to a gym, or be a golfer with a low handicap to get into your sexiest shape! Five key

areas of exercise are helpful in mobilizing and stabilizing the glutes, hips, spine, core, and lower body in order to improve efficiency and ability to perform golf movements without compensations. Not only will you improve your golf swing, but you can even prevent the imbalances and injuries seen in many golfers, and “desk potatoes” and you’ll probably notice a trimmer mid-section, tighter glute and more attention from the opposite sex. “I’d hate that,” said no-one, ever! Remember, the key to results is consistency. Start including these exercises in your training consistently today, and you will notice the improvements within a few weeks. If you’re like most of my clients, setting aside “me time,” is more a a wish than a reality. Iam going to make this super easy, effective and efficient for you. Make it a point to do these exercises upon awakening 4-6x per week—15 minutes per session. In less than a few weeks you will feel the changes and see results of greater flexibly, improved stability and balance, as well as longer drives stemmed from improved strength.

EXERCISES 1. Single Leg Deadlift Target: Glutes and hamstrings — a golfer’s primary drivers. It also helps eliminate strength imbalances on the left and right side of the body, improves lower body stabilization and protects the knees from injury. Be sure to watch your form Glutes, “drive” your golf swing. Hamstrings, are very prone to injury, and very important to support your swing. • To perform the single leg RDL, hold a kettlebell, weight in your left hand to start, and have it rest right in front of your thigh as you’re standing. • Shift your weight to the right leg as if you’re going to balance on one leg, bend at the hips, and allow your left leg to come up in the air behind you as you draw your chest down parallel to the ground and activating your abs. • Then carefully straighten your hips and your right leg to the ground, finishing in a tall position. You should also perform this on the other side (weight in right hand, balance on left leg)

Note: It is important to maintain a flat, not bent, back and straight leg without bending your knee during this exercise.

regimen

3. Mini Band Walks Target: Glutes —They’re the muscles that “extend” and “rotate” the hips – and as shared in #1, this is what powers your swing. • To perform the mini band walks, first place a resistance band around your ankles, and get yourself into a quarter squat position, putting more weight into your heels and mak-ing sure your knees do not angle forward over your toes. • From here, take small steps to the side, initiating the movement with your glutes. Note: maintain correct posture throughout the walk, and do small and steady steps while maintaining a steady breathing sequence.

2. Flexor Stretch Target: Hip flexors In the ballistic movement of a golf swing, the hips go through what’s called “extension” and “rotation.” If you can’t move your hips through this full range-ofmotion, then your swing’s power will be limited, and you’ll compensate by twisting & bending your spine more than you should. • To stretch the hip flexors, start in a half kneeling position, with one knee on the ground and the other upright at 90 degrees. • Take in a big breath, and then exhale. As you exhale, lean your body forward as you sink your hips to the floor. • Note: Do not hold your breath. It is very important that you are breathing during the stretch.

84 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

4. Lunges with Rotation Target: Lower body & obliques —designed to strengthen the lower body while creat-ing separation between the upper and lower body. This separation is what allows the top players to create the distance they posses. The lunge is a basic leg exercise while the rotations provide you with the separation needed as a golfer. • Begin in a standing position and proceed into the above position with the back knee slightly touching the floor. The key to this exercise is using the lead leg to lower and lift your body weight. • You do not want your front knee to extend past your toes. • Make sure to take a big enough initial step to facilitate appropriate resistance. Target: Shoulders and torso. Awesome stretch in the shoulders and enhances torso mobility— Twists are considered to be one of the best exercises for the golf swing. • Lie on the back with the feet raised. Bend them at the 90-degree angle so that the calves are in a parallel position to the ground. • Extend the arms with your palms facing towards the floor. • Then in slow motion, lower the legs towards one side of the body. But don’t forget to keep those knees together. • Stay in that position above the floor for at least 30 seconds before returning to the cen-ter. • Do the same in the opposite direction and repeat the exercise 3 more times.

Summer Tips with Anat Fritz! LIFESTYLE EXPERT ANAT FRITZ TAKES OVER THE HAMPTONS

L

ast summer I moved to live in the Hamptons full-time. For a city girl it was a big adjustment. I realized how much I am used to noise, and squeaking subway cars. It was eerie and spooky walking through this quiet place which offers little distraction. You are so thrown back to yourself. which I appreciate. Small things matter much more, become more visible than in the grind of a daily city life. I am looking forward to the hot summer here - with beautiful beaches and green nature all around.

SUMMER TIPS 1. Hydrate your Skin! I have been hydrating my face with spray toners for ages. The predominant idea is to hydrate the summer skin and give it an instant plump, and 86 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

dewy glow we all love. I like to make my own, and so can you. It is really easy: Take a nice spray bottle. Glass is best, or at least BPA free plastic. Fill with filtered water and add drops of your favorite essential oils, best is food grade to make sure it is pure and safe to use on your body. There are so many essential oils that are beneficial for delicate face skin. Thanks to the internet you can easily determine what works in favor of your individual skin type. I typically add Damascus oil, the scent is so uplifting to me, and always Frankincense, for its great antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also is very effective in evening out the skin tone and decreasing the appearance of pores and fine lines. Great benefits! Shake it up, spray and enjoy! 2. Chill out! I have been obsessed with what I call “smart

cubes”. My motto: if I can freeze it, and if it will make me happy having it portionized, let´s freeze it! Thinking of summer, I cannot wait to design my own heat smart “everything” ice cubes. The ideas are endless, one I love is to peel a fresh Aloe Vera leaf, throw it into a high speed blender with a little bit of water and fill in cubes to freeze. Rub on fresh sunburns, throw into the blender along with your morning smoothie - beautifies you from inside. 4. Casual Chic! Everything is much more casual in the summer - we all love the sandals, white T-shirt and blue Jeans look. It is effort- and timeless yet sexy. When the temperatures start to fall towards the evening, it is great to have a light Blazer handy. I always carry a little tote in my car with my favorite Blazer and High Heels to be able to instantly amp up the casual into a more formal mode. These two pieces

are often all that it needs to feel well dressed and confident in your skin. Preparation is the key here. 5. Sexy Scents Summer is also a time where it is smart to rethink your habits around the way you apply perfume and adjust to its different performance when we sweat, and are exposed to high temperatures and strong sun, which sometimes almost has a bleaching effect.

Top 5 perfume summer tips Go light on the quantity you spray - with higher temperatures perfume expands and the scent becomes way stronger than in lower temperatures. Spray your body from farther away - a condensed perfume spot on your skin might irritate or even cause sun discoloration. Hair, a natural diffuser for scent, is a great spot to spray on. It creates a very subtle, sexy cloud around you. No impulse purchases. How many times have i liked something in the whiff of the moment and then realized at home that I had really no connection to the scent. I take testers home, and should I still like it after a few days, I´ll go back and get it!

I am a fan on DIY mixes, so I liquidify some coconut oil, fill it in a pretty container and mix in just a spritz of my favorite perfume. Once the scented coconut oil is hard again, I put it on my body. Just check on a tiny skin spot first, some people are sensitive and you never know what ingredient can cause a reaction. Skin loves Coconut oil - so your “solid perfume” even has added value as moisturizer! What are the current trends in the perfume industry? My observation of the past few years is that even the “real” luxury consumer, has become much more conscious of sustainability and trying to be personally involved - as much as it is possible - in environmental questions. We only have one Earth, and we better preserve it! As human beings we naturally feel better if we are aligned with nature and the planet we call our home. I am grateful that my perfumes completely fit into this context. I felt this trend many years ago when I had the urge to create a perfume that was designed to help a city creature easily reconnect with nature and our roots, even when we see so little of it around us in big cities like New York or Berlin or Shanghai. Back then, my perfume line's natural “apothecary” appeal was something very unconventional. One of the

key associations I was looking to convey with my “CLASSICAL” scent was a woodsy, earthy notion. Aspects of the forest, even wet soil, admittedly that is quite uncommon sounding. Living in New York, it is sometimes hard to detach from the big city vibe and take it easy! Whenever we think of nature we immediately breathe deeper, get calmer, slow down and maybe even get aware of how much we were running around like a headless chicken prior to that conscious thought or breath. We can all be so much more of service to the world, if we are conscious and aware. I have been exploring that for the past few years and it gets more and more obvious to me. Back to nature is the big trend, and now is the time where we really are living up to that vs. it just being an empty slogan.

5 Easy Ways to Cut 100 Calories BY LINDSAY BRUSTEIN ROSEN, MS, RD, CDN

W

hether you are looking to maintain your current weight or drop a few pounds, it is always a good idea to cut empty calories out of your daily diet. Forgoing 100 calories may not seem like a big sacrifice day-to-day, but this small tweak can lead to a one-pound weight loss each month!

Here are 5 easy ways to ditch 100 calories: 1) Instead of sugary soda, sip flavored sparkling water! Sparking water is sugar-free and calorie-free, but packed with tons of flavor. A 12-ounce can of soda like Pepsi packs in 150 calories and 41 grams of carbohydrates (all of which come from sugar)! Although diet soda has 0 calories and 0 grams of sugar, it is loaded with artificial sweeteners and artificial coloring. Choosing a flavored version of sparking water or seltzer is an all-natural and tasty way to get your fizz and your flavor. 2) Instead of a small bag of chips or pretzels, have a big bowl of popcorn! A single portion (1.5 ounce bag) of potato chips contains 240 calories, while the same portion of pretzels contains 160 calories. Although the pretzels may seem like the better choice, they are still not exactly “diet friendly.” (Hint: they are made with refined carbohydrates and have virtually no dietary fiber.) If you are looking for a larger 88 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

BY LINDSAY BRUSTEIN ROSEN, MS, RD, CDN

portion of food for a fraction of the calories, eat 3 whole cups of 94% fat-free popcorn. This heaping portion weighs in at only 60 calories! Added bonus? It is made with 100% whole grains! 3) Instead of calorie-dense peanut butter, choose powdered peanut butter! Sure you are familiar with peanut butter, but do you know about POWDERED peanut butter? In the powdered variety, the peanuts are dehydrated and most of the dietary fat (and therefore calories) are removed! Whereas 2 tablespoons of peanut butter has about 190 calories, powdered peanut butter contains only 45 calories for the same portion! You can simply mix the powder with water to create a creamy spread, or mix it into your smoothies or yogurt bowls for an extra delicious, low-calorie peanut butter flavor. 4) Instead of regular rice, opt for riced cauliflower! Cauliflower is all of the rage right now. There are riced cauliflowers, cauliflower pizza crusts, and even cauliflower “steaks” on restaurant menus and grocery store shelves. One cup of white rice contains nearly 240 calories, whereas the same cup of riced cauliflower has only 25 calories! If you are not quite ready to give up your traditional rice, simply mix ½ cup of regular rice with ½ cup of cauliflower rice for a more nutrient-rich, lowercalorie blend! 5) Instead of calorie-clogged salad dressing, top your veggies with salsa or mustard! Many bottled salad dressings are loaded with calories, fat, and sugar. You may have

good intentions by choosing a salad, but your dressing likely add over 100 extra calories (for just 2 small tablespoons) without you even realizing! Try adding low-calorie salsa or mustard to your salad. Mix them with balsamic or red wine vinegar for a tasty vinaigrette. Play around with different flavors and varieties of salsa and mustard until you find your favorite combination. My favorite mixture is 1 part Dijon mustard and 1 part balsamic vinegar- yum!

Focus on: NYC's Favorite Barber YORK BARBER SHOP BY ADAM KLUGER

W

ord of Bisbee's Dad's funeral got passed around t h ro u g h f r i e n d s via emails. Good ol' Bisbee. Stanley Schlumperdink thought to himself of the times he and the Diabolical Bis would hit on chicks together at Trader Vic's at The Plaza in High School. Bisbee always preferred the Tiki Puka Puka to the Spider Bowls. Either way. The girls back then had candy flavored lipstick and a real love of high fashion. A small bell always rang as you entered York Barber Shop. It was a New York institution. All the private school kids went there for haircuts and Stanley had been no different. Through the years it was the one relationship he could always count on. Enrique Peralta, the owner and head barber was behind the front barber chair near the window as always. He was the rock-star and rainmaker. He ran the ship and had done so for over 40 years. Stanley knew that because for 40 years he only went to Enrique.

90 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com

Enrique was everybody's barber. Famous athletes, celebrities, businessmen and regular New Yorkers. The place was an old time Barbershop with Sinatra blaring in the background and gold poles gleaming. Old time newspapers and magazines in the racks. When Stanley was a kid he used to sneak a look at the Playboy Magazine and no one ever scolded him. It was a place for men. Haircuts, shaves. The old fashioned kind with a straight razor and shaving cream. The attractive older female attendant Olga would massage the stubbly beards of customers and then put piping hot towels on their faces. It seems like Olga would apply upwards of 7 different lotions and towels before she would finally apply the razor. There was no rush. Barbers would perform minuets with scissors behind their client's ears. Studying the lay and gradation of the slope of hair on the neck to determine a sense of perfect balance. Customers waiting in line were in no rush either they enjoyed watching the masterful Enrique making jokes with the other barbers or his attractive attendants, always the gracious host and boss. Everybody knew and loved Enrique.

He knew more secrets that a fortune teller or a psychiatrist. Enrique's barber chair was the place you could sit and get a haircut and exhale. "How are you my friend?" "Ok." Enrique could tell otherwise. He knew Stanley like the back of his hand. He had known Stanley's father and Uncle and family and he remembered when a young 7 year old Stanley offered to help clean up all the hair on the shop floor with the giant broom to the delight of everybody in the shop. He knew Stanley's heart. He felt his pain. He knew. Enrique knew people quite well. He was NYC's best barber but he was a lot more than that. He had been divorced and he had seen his share of financial shenanigans from old business partners and he ran a successful barber shop but that didn't mean that he didn't know how the world really was. "So what'll it be" "Make me look good." "Always, always." They smiled at each other.

Then Stanley closed his eyes and sunk back in the chair. The face in the mirror in front of him was almost unrecognizable. "Get rid of the beard right?" "yep--just electric razor." "no straight?" "Nah" "You got it." The beard was gone in a minute or two. "That's much better." "Don't look like a terrorist." "You know who was here the other day?" "Who?" "Woody Allen...he was shooting a new film in the barbershop." "Did he give you a cameo." "He should have." Stanley felt the electric razor cutting his hair. It was a pleasant feeling. Enrique was kind of like Santa Claus he thought. The shop had a feel of Santa's workshop. "Fly me to the Moon..." Stanley glanced around the shop. Packed as always. But Enrique was not rushing. He was

happy to have Stanley back in his chair and the feeling was mutual. There wasn't much chatter this time. Stanley didn't initiate too much. "Work?" "Tough these days." "The woman?" "Same." "We gotta just do our best that's all we can do." "You said it." They shared a look. One of Enrique's smiles was more precious that most things. It was reassuring and it was Enrique. He didn't say much sometimes although he could also talk a blue streak all the time. But Enrique knew. As he worked the electric razor expertly on Stanley's hair and wet and cut his bangs, pulled the comb through and snipped away, the haircut was nearing its conclusion and it was what it was which is what Enrique Peralta had done for every day of his life that he put on his apron and welcomed a customer into his barber chair. It was not just the best haircut Stanley

Schlumperdink had ever gotten (like all of them) It was a feeling that enveloped him as he got off the chair, shook Enrique's strong hand and hugged him with a tear in his eye. "How'd we do?" "Perfect Enrique, perfect." "Next time don't wait so long for a haircut, ok, kiddo?" "You got it, Enrique. Thanks." After paying at the old-time cash register, and slipping $20 into Enrique's hand as a tip, with one last hug, Stan the Man, walked out of York Barber Shop to the sound of a jingling bell, the rush of a cool breeze in the sun and a sudden desire for an iced coffee and a napkin, to scratch out a new "to-do list" at a nearby CafĂŠ. 981 Lexington Ave New York, NY 10021 NEW YORK Monday to Friday: 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Saturday: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm Sunday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (212) 988 - 6136 (212) 650 - 1953

Westminster Nursery & Garden Center BRINGS BEAUTY TO LONG ISLAND

F

rom simple seasonal Christmas tree sales to one of the most respected full-service nurseries on Long Island, Westminster Nursery & Garden Center began more than a quarter of a century ago providing annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, ornamentation and garden supplies. Richard Hanna, the sole proprietor of the nursery, developed what is now known today as a premier nursery & garden center. Richard started this journey almost accidentally. He was a music major when his father bought a piece of property. Someone suggested selling Christmas trees on it, since there was a significant demand for them. Once he was out of college, Richard decided to take advantage of this opportunity and give it a try and began selling Christmas trees to passersby. He achieved much success in just his first few years, and decided to make a go of it. From then on the nursery flourished, growing into the garden center it is today—offering everything from trees to freshcut flowers. The nursery has since added a full-service landscape design, building and maintenance division. The staff is well-trained and

knowledgeable, and they can answer any questions you may have about gardening or landscaping. They can also help you solve any issues regarding things such as annual planting, how to construct a pool, a patio, walk, deck or even a driveway. Though the nursery has grown and the business has expanded, the store has still remained familyrun to keep consistency. Landscaping trends seem to lean toward more elegant, clean-cut sophisticated projects, with a focus on outdoor spaces. The lead landscape designer involved, Patrick Duffe, spoke of the decisions one must make in creating ideal outdoor spaces. With gardens from simple to ornate, there must always be the question of maintaining it. Patrick insisted that if you don’t have access to landscape experts like him or his team coming to check up on your beautiful gardens fairly regularly, they may be harder to manage, and may not keep their beauty intact; especially with perennial gardens. Mr. Duffe makes it a point to say that he personally prefers keeping it relatively simple, regardless if others would rather have more-complicated designs. He feels that simplicity offers an easier, as well as more manageable result that will last; keeping his customers happy without too

much hassle or stress. As with any business, there often comes competition, but Richard seems serenely confident. The Westminster Nursery & Garden Center never seems to run out of stock (because it is well maintained under Richard's guiding eye), and the quality is unparalleled. Mr. Hanna prides himself on bringing in stock that is top notch and that will provide customers with a one-stop shopping experience. The nursery is much bigger today than it had been at the beginning, but that doesn’t make Richard forget where he came from. Whenever the holidays come around, the Christmas trees are stocked and ready to go, just as it was when that original piece of property was purchased. The Westminster Nursery & Garden Center is open seven days a week, making it easier than ever to to gather whatever help or supplies you need for your project or your garden. Whether you stop by to grab some gardening tools, or are ready to tackle a new deck for your home, The Westminster Nursery & Garden Center will make sure you get what you need to complete your next project! westminsternursery.com

Mr. Custom Made has clothed such celebrities as Wrestling Legend Ric Flair, former boxer Floyd Mayweather, Sr., NFL stars Devon Kennard, and Todd Gurley and next up is Box Office Action Star and athlete, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Marks recently celebrated the grand opening of Mr. Custom Made in June of 2017 at the Westfield

Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J. Along with his fiancé Sandy Kornitzer, Marks and his team, are taking the men's fashion world by storm one fitting at a time. Born in Rockland County, N.Y, Marks' love for fashion is all in the family. Mom Joy Marks has always been a style trendsetter. Joy graced the cover of Metropolitan magazine in 2016. “My mother is a fashionista. She would attend these elaborate affairs and would be dressed in the most top of the line outfits; she reminded me of a movie star.” He continues “She is one of the reasons why I am a huge believer that if you walk out of your house and know you look right, you’re

going to feel great.” My mother’s influence on style positively impacted the man who I am today." While an appreciation of classic fashion has always been woven into the fabric of Adam Marks' life, he says that a love for public speaking, networking and business coaching has always taken front stage. “I’ve known since I can remember that I have strong business ethics. I can look at a company and always do something to help it grow and make it better.” It seems that Adam Marks is cut from the same cloth as his father Alan Marks, a highly successful entrepreneur. have been building their brand name for over thirty years. In addition to his mother’s impeccable taste, his father Alan also exposed Adam to the glamorous world of high society events. His father would take him to exclusive gala events, and as a young man, Adam would find himself surrounded by celebrities who were always elegantly dressed. The attire of the men stood out in particular because of the sharp suits they were wearing. Marks recalls one event in Las Vegas that his father took him to when he was thirteen years old. “Ric Flair of World Wrestling Entertainment was there, and I have always been a huge fan. Flair

stood out to me because of his personal style and individuality. He always looked dashing, and I admired his fantastic taste." Fast forward to a few years ago, Marks and his brother attended an event in New York City that Flair was hosting. “I waited in line for an autograph. I was dressed in my suit, and I was rocking these great sunglasses, Ric Flair automatically noticed me. He said, “I see a guy in a custom-made suit.” For a wrestling legend like Ric Flair to notice Marks in a custom-made suit was a revelatory moment, Marks knew that he needed to collaborate with a guy like this one day.

That’s precisely what he did. In 2017, Marks sent a private message to Ric Flair on Instagram asking him if he can make a custom-made suit for him. “I never want to miss out on any opportunities in life, so I decided to take a chance,” said Marks. The next day, I received a message from Flair's fiancé Wendy asking me to come out to his home in Atlanta, the rest is history.” Ric Flair now has a personal collection at Mr. Custom Made. Woooooo! In the future Adam Marks plans to expand into casual wear and women’s clothing.

L

ocal philanthropists are working together to create a platform for sustainable and affordable housing in South Florida. Bringing together a connected and charitable group of local women to uphold and implement the five pillars of the mission of the newly formed charity, Starz Foundation is the ultimate vision of founder, Candace Rojas. As a mother, small business owner and a full- time resident of Palm Beach, Florida founder Candace Rojas recognized the need to create an organization for residents who needed a “network of caring partners” to support them during times of crisis, transition, or hard-times. Rojas says, "We receive desperate calls from women in domestic violence situations or who have experienced sudden job loss without income and had nowhere to go. I started bringing them to my home until I could find temporary housing." Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA raised by a single mother under stressful conditions, I faced challenges, as each of us do in life. Great lessons are learnedthrough pain. Rojas says, "As a child, I lived below poverty standards in a violent atmosphere and endured cycles of abuse for many years as a result of generational struggles with alcoholism and addictions that plagued my family." Despite this adversity, Candace believed the promises that she read in the holy scriptures and says, "I wanted safety, purpose, peace and prosperity." Rojas goes onto say, "Like most Americans, I dreamt of starting a family, a business and residing in a safe-community. I hoped to own a home and reside in a safe place. I also dreamt of opening a charity since I have a heart for “the hurting; the underdog.” Those who need a second chance and desire a better life can apply for our programs and those who want business support can join our global membership which offers professional mentorship and support through virtual webinars and in- person seminars and retreats. Who couldn't use a second chance in life? With the support of this team of dedicated volunteers, together with a community of caring and sharing partners, STARZ foundation hopes to realize these dreams for all citizens of South Florida.

Working with companies to locate land to place container homes for smaller, sustainable communities. Candace Rojas is looking towards sitting on committee as an active member. DR. DANIELA ATANASSOVA-LINEVA, MD VISION FOR TOTAL HEALTH B Y ADAM K LUG E R

D

r. Daniela AtanassovaLineva, MD is a Doctor on a mission to help everybody in the family live a healthier, happier life. Born in Bulgaria, Dr. Daniela, who speaks 5 different languages, is as brilliant as she is dedicated. Her love for children has led her to all parts of the globe as a medical volunteer. Her own personal story of turning tragedy into triumph is not only inspirational but a testament to the extraordinary life and invaluable work of this remarkable Doctor and individual. Also, her ten year old son is the best company and motivation for her today and she is extremely

proud of him. He is an excellent tennis player in the Eastern section How did you get into medicine? Ever since I was a little girl I dreamt of becoming a doctor. The only answer I would give to adults to the question, “What would you like to become when you grow up ?” was... “A DOCTOR!” Most of my imaginary play games as a child were with dolls that I would treat and perform surgeries on. I would use pine tree needles as injections, make compound remedies from flower leaves mixed with mud and pretend being a Doctor. I even built my own little clinic tree house and would climb every day to escape into my games. Children are my inspiration. Children,

my mom being a teacher, and I also developed an interest in science and languages from my dad . He was an agricultural engineer and instilled in me a love for nature, plants and science. Now, I want to help parents look and feel better too! In 2010 you were recognized by the International Association of Pediatrics as a Leading Physician of the World and Top Pediatrician in Queens, NYC. In 2011, you received the Patient’s Choice Award. For the past 11 years in a row (20082017) you have been selected as one of America’s Top Pediatricians. Now, you are expanding your practice in a number of new directions? Why? I recently added services to benefit the parents of my children, the whole family.

Parents are so incredibly important. They need to take care of themselves better for the sake of their children. The new service for parents and adults is called: D DAY med spa or Dr D Medical wellness, because the most important day of your life is the day you commit to your health and well being. Everything starts with that day. Your awakening, your true potential, your renaissance, your inner and outer beauty, your biggest investment to yourself. D stands for “the Day”, “Daniela Day, “ for a relaxing day, a special day. That “Day” you may spend the entire day doing yoga, having beautification and anti-aging procedures, nutritional education, health drinks, massage. Parents deserve to be pampered too. You serve yourself on D Day as a deserving healthy woman or man, parent. This sounds amazing! Why is it so important to expand your practice to address the health needs of parents? The goal is to educate parents and

the community on how they can benefit themselves and their children with these new services. I’ve spent two decades taking care of children (who will always remain a primary focus). Over those years I’ve seen how unhealthy parents can sometimes negatively impact their children. Children often learn and adopt unhealthy behaviors from their parents ( addictions, stress, divorce, alcohol, tobacco). This is often why some children get sick since they are fully dependent on their parents who at times, unwittingly make unhealthy decisions for themselves and their children. This is why I want to spend equal time on educating and healing the parents. Healthier parents raise healthier children. Whatever it takes for them to reach a healthy balance. How? Proper Health, nutrition and even beauty treatments. Helping parents look and feel more attractive and fit, boosting their confidence offering Aesthetic medical services. I want to prevent chronic disease through caring

for the parents, so they can provide a healthy environment for their children. This is why I am continually growing my knowledge and expertise in the field of nutrition, anti-aging and aesthetic medicine so that I can also help parents look good and feel great! Beauty and Health, Health and Happiness, Happiness and Health. How have you grown this additional knowledge and expertise while at the same time being a leading doctor in Pediatrics for two decades? After graduating from Mount Sinai Medical School I was invited to teach in the Pediatrics ER at Elmhurst Hospital, a big trauma center with very challenging cases. I always used to say that I thrive on challenges and the ER environment was a perfect match to my personality and ambitions. The experience I gained in the ER, doing minor surgical procedures and taking care of acute cases made me choose to expand my areas of specialty and seek additional training in Aesthetic and anti aging medicine. I am certified in Botox and derma fillers injections, anti aging and hair loss PRP procedures, threading face lifts, non invasive fat loss removal procedures, utilizing the latest and most innovative laser machines of Cynosure, SCULPSURE and TEMPSURE. My mentor and idol in life is Dr George Anastassov, a very respected plastic and maxillofacial surgeon. I have been working under his supervision both in Elmhurst Hospital and his private office in Manhattan. Learning from the best has given me the knowledge and confidence I need to keep evolving and searching for my full potential as a Doctor. What about nutrition? I am currently representing USANA nutrition and healthy products and in support of its CEO and founder, Dr. Myron Wentz . I also want to be part of his mission on approaching health and beauty from a cellular level. additionally, I am currently in the process of certifying for the medical Board of Obesity Medicine. How does your knowledge of various languages help you as a Doctor? I was born and raised in Bulgaria, but my father spent 4 years working in Morocco where I attended school and learned French. Russian was mandatory during the times I grew up in Bulgaria, and English and Spanish came naturally after I moved to USA. There are days when I speak all 5 languages. It feels so special to be able to communicate to patients and parents in their mother tongue/ language. I work in the most diverse area in the world, in Queens with more than 82 nationalities. In the last 5 years I have been traveling and exploring

the world, volunteering for children in Nepal, Nicaragua, Mexico. Recently visited China and Mongolia. Learning about new cultures is my new passion. You lost your daughter very tragically. How have you been able to survive this loss and honor her beloved memory? My strong personality, the support system of friends, colleagues and family has helped me cope with the tragic loss of my daughter. My Fiancée who is also my best friend is my rock . His precious love and support means my life. My son who is only 10 has taught me resilience . My wonderful patients keep me going . Also, I’m a dreamer. I opened the Med Spa in honor of my daughter. Stefani was a first division full scholarship (tennis) student-athlete in a pre med program at Binghamton, and she wanted to become a child psychiatrist. This is the reason I decided to expand the services to add psychologist, life coaches, nutritionist , SW on-line services, in addition to the beauty and anti-aging procedures. Blending the Eastern and Western way of medicine and integrating them, is what my continuing path will be. I also registered the foundation StefaniForever20 in memory of my beloved daughter to raise awareness of alcohol and drug abuse in colleges. You are an amazing person. What types of things do you do to stay healthy and grounded? I have an altruistic personality. Having purpose in life is a blessing. I did not even

look for it, born this way. Caring and giving, helping others, being present for patients and friends, traveling and volunteering keeps me humble and grounded. I have very high bars and expectations and being loved by me is not easy. Perhaps, even my family, my children, fiancée feel deprived of my presence at times. I like to joke saying that I have always been married to medicine Goals for the future. Keep developing this new model of Health Care, where in one place, with a trusted physician, patients can come and seek not only medications, but life guidance. I am a doctor with extended knowledge of anatomy, great experience in surgical procedures and would like to share this gift with my patients, their families and the community. Working on the foundation and traveling, volunteering will be a big part of my future career. I am also teaching PA students from Stony Brook and will be investing time in an academic career as well. The catalyst for my drive to dedicate the rest of my life to science and beauty is my pursuit to prevent diseases and ensure long- lived health. Health is happiness , happiness is health. My vision and new model of healthcare is the way of the future. I want to offer to the parents of my children and to their families the knowledge and understanding of how to invest in their health.
