In the coming months, you’ll see the same stories that you love and others you didn’t know you’ve been missing! At Salutations in Glen Gove, a Rare Morrocan Gazebo was the Perfect Setting for Many of Our Garden Party Picnics.

Gold Coast Gazebos

B

Story and Photos by Monica Randall

ack in the golden age, every long Island estate had at least one or more garden structures known as gazebos, temples, follies, or tea houses tucked away in a secluded part of the garden. The sheer range of architectural styles and shapes never failed to amaze. There were also whimsical bath houses, beach cabanas, grottos, and Sham-Castles, and rambling rose covered colonnades. They covered every architectural style from Greek, Gothic, Chinese, Egyptian, Baroque, and Palladian. Most of these charming structures here on the Gold Coast were replicas of those found on the vast estates throughout Europe, where their true purpose was to surprise and delight those who wandered past them.

24 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

It is surprising how many of them have survived, even after the main manor houses have long since been bulldozed. Used as a shelter from the rain and hot summer sun, these outdoor retreats were open to the gentle breezes from the Long Island Sound as light filtered through the luxuriant foliage. Garden temples became popular during the 17th and 18th centuries when queens would take their afternoon tea in them, and exchange ideas with friends and their resident philosophers. For the daring romantic, they became a secret place for lovers to exchange stolen kisses and gaze at the stars on moonlit evenings.

Movie Mogul, J. Blackton, Built this Unique Gazebo Overlooking Cold Spring Harbor. The Estate was Owned by Tennis Champ, John McEnroe.

The Most Famous Gazebo on Long Island is the Beautiful Lakeside Temple at Old Westbury Gardens.

Chinese style pavilions with their metal scrolled up peeked roofs were all the rage during the 1920’s. One still stands hidden away in an overgrown garden at Chelsea Manor in East Norwich. In its day, it was often festooned with colorful paper lanterns for frivolous gay occasions. Some were built in the middle of a man made lake filled with carp and exotic water plants. You often had to cross a red painted footbridge to get to them. At Pembroke, in Glen Cove, Capt. Delmar built a lavish neo-classic bathing cabana, and teahouse, with a second floor terrace for dancing along the waters edge. It contained a rare jade fireplace in the main room where bathers could warm up after a mid-night swim in the Sound. Many of the dozens of their hundred foot docks that were built along the shore often had a wooden or stone temple at the end. These were often used for cocktail parties while watching the setting sun at the end of a beautiful summers day. The only one still standing can be found at Welwyn, the former Harold Erving Pratt estate in Glen Cove. It appears to be listing dangerously as one of its pillared columns has fallen into the Sound. A rare Morrocan style gazebo at Glen Cove’s Salutations was the setting for many of our Victorian style picnics. Sadly it was toppled during a recent hurricane. Salutations was used in the 1994 movie of Sabrina, starring Harrison Ford. WINFIELD At Winfield , the former F.W Woolworth mansion in Glen Cove, there is a marble, Neo-classic tea house pavilion in the north end rose garden. At one time there was a long underground tunnel that ran from the tea house down

to the basement of the sixty room palace that the five and dime store king built around the turn of the last century. In 1979, while some excavation work was being done under the building, it was rumored that a human skeleton was found in the tunnel. Who it was, and how it got there remains a mystery. During the time the property was being used as a girls school, some of the students who lived there claimed to see ghosts lurking in the garden on warm summer nights. Some even claimed to have captured them on film. In the less haunted parts of the garden, there is also a massive grotto, and marble colonnade that centers around a life sized statue of King Neptune, surrounded by giant pink marble horses and dolphins. At one time water sprayed high in the air into the deep round basin pool. During the halcyon days, dozens of lakeside temples, inspired by the Parthenon in Rome were a popular status symbol. Man made lakes were created and filled with swans and colorful water lilies. Some had a gondola or two shipped from Venice where guests could sip a glass of wine while gliding along as candles flickered in gilded lanterns from bow to stern and reflected on the water in rippling waves of gold. It all sounds like some Hollywood Fantasy, too good to be true, but it was very real once upon a time here on the Gold Coast. I was born too late to be a part of that dream world, but wasn’t ready to let go of those romantic images that kept swirling around my head. There were enough charming architectural relics left, here and there so that one way or another, it seemed possible to travel back in time and relive some small part of it. Enter Gertrude’s secret hermitage. July 2015 | 25

THE GERTRUDE VANDERBILT WHITNEY PAVILION Back in the seventies and eighties when there were still so many remnants of the old estates still intact, we formed a little social club to pay tribute and make use of what was left behind. The Gazebo Society, or Friends of Abandoned Gazebos, was made up of artists and writers, who unable to get their work recognized or published, would gather in these forgotten places and share their creative works among themselves. On warm summer nights we would relive the past, making good use of the hundreds of vintage gowns, hats and parasols we had rescued from the fallen estates. As a dedicated group, we took these events seriously, and they were staged like a movie set with authentic picnic hampers filled with exotic food made from recipes from a bygone era. My job was to locate a charming setting, off the beaten track that was easy to drive up to, and hopefully not one that was patrolled by caretakers or night watchman. The Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney art studio was now part of the 600 acre Old Westbury Country Club. The famed pavilion, designed by Delano & Aldrich was a breathtaking architectural gem, and landmark. It was well maintained by a phantom team of gardeners, even though no one lived there since Gertrude passed away in 1942. The stucco Beaux- Arts style 26 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

pavilion had served as a private Atelier where Gertrude, an adventurous, and controversial spirit created and displayed her original art work in the main 32 foot-high ceilinged room. It was there that she entertained some of the most famous Artists of the day, along with her many New York society friends. The North wing of her hideaway was set off by a magnificent Japanese style teak-wood pergola, drenched in a ganglia of wisteria vines. A wide marble terrace overlooks a celedon green tiled swimming pool. It remains one of the most magical and secluded places that are surrounded by an eight-foot brick wall covered in ivy. To the North, the famed bronze sculpture of the Three Graces sets off a long lagoon that feeds water into the pool. One very hot summer night we decided the location was the perfect setting to host a formal Edwardian dinner party for our group. On the wide marble terrace there was a vintage wrought iron table with eight ornate matching chairs. Dressed in turn of the century finery, we arrived in three cars, which we hid in the nearby abandoned garage. Using a small wagon, we carried assorted linens, a 1920’s Duchess lace tablecloth, a vase of French flowers,

two silver candelabras, Tiffany gold trimmed wine goblets, rescued from Farnswroth, and the finest Lamouge chine around a silver service. Everyone contributed to the meal, which centered around a silver tray of roasted game hens, currant and pecan asparagus, hickory nut butter cakes, fine wine, and a homemade strawberry shortcake. The ladies were all in white linen lace gowns, with floral hairpieces, while the men wore white tie and tails. By about ten p.m we were just starting to serve dessert, when we heard a car pull up to the front of the house. We knew the place was patrolled during the day, but didn’t expect anyone to show up late at night. We had no idea what to do. We held our breathe and decided to act normal. After all, we were just living as though we were a Monet painting come to life, and I always believed that we created a thing of beauty, no harm would come to us. But, in reality we were trespassing on a grand scale. Moments later, two police officers stood at the North corner of the studio beaming their flashlights at us. They did not move, appear to blink or utter a word. We froze, our forks and cake in mid-air. The candles flickered as we breathed nervously. Not a sound was heard, even the night birds stopped chirping

in the trees. The bull frogs who had lent their somnolent bleeping to our event all evening were suddenly still. I, on a leap of faith finally blurted out. “Hi officers, you’re just in time, would you all care to join us for some homemade strawberry shortcake?” With that they both turned and ran back to their car. To this day I have no idea why. We would have been happy to have them join us as the local police have the best stories to tell. My only theory is that the Whitney Gardens have been rumored to be haunted by a young artist who fell in love with Gertrude sometime in the Twenties. When she spurned him, he is said to have leaped to his death from the hundred and fifty foot water tower that stands nearby. It is possible that the two policemen mistook us for ghosts having a dinner party in 1914? I mean really, everyone knows ghosts are fuzzy and transparent, and we were solid, living, breathing trespassers. Authors note: To learn more about these charming garden structures, there is a one hour illustrated program on the subject available to garden clubs and libraries for information call: The North Shore Preservation Society at: 516 921-7438. HAMPTON’S HILLS CELEBRATES ITS GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY REMEMBERING 50 YEARS OF RICH HISTORY By Elizabeth Darwen

A

fter witnessing Jordan Spieth dominate the PGA tour so far this year, it is time to test your mettle on your own private world class golf course. Hampton Hills Country Club, with its rich history, inviting clubhouse, and impeccable golf course, is now accepting new members for its summer season. Just ninety minutes outside of New York City, Hampton Hills Country Club is one of New York’s best kept secrets—and members like it that way. Opened in 1965, the club celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year in 2015. Bookended by the 2009 US Open host Bethpage State Park Black Course and the 2004 US Open host Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Hampton Hills is located in the middle of a 2,000 acre pine and oak tree preserve in Westhampton Beach. The wooded setting allows members to escape the rush of the city in favor of peaceful competition against a challenging golf course. Built in 1965 by Francis J. Duane, the course at Hampton Hills Country Club is said by members to never play the same way twice. Duane, a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, frequently 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

collaborated with famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and designed over a dozen courses with Arnold Palmer including the iconic Sea Pines Country Club course in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Complementing a full service pro shop on the premises are teaching professionals Jack McGown, the course’s Director of Golf, and Patricia Baxter-Johnson, who bring personal PGA and LPGA experience to deliver an exemplary sporting experience to Hampton Hills. Celebrity golfers who have been known to play the Hampton Hills course include Tommy Hilfiger, Russell Simmons, Rudy Giuliani, Kelsey Grammer, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, David Tyree John Starks, FOX’s Bill Hemmer and NY Jets’ Nick Mangold. In the summer months, members can head for a round of cocktails on the clubhouse’s patio or dine inside overlooking the breathtaking 18th green. Breakfast, lunch, and a simple bar menu dinner are served daily. In between games the full bar, snack bar, and restaurant encourage a relaxing break from friendly competition at Hampton Hills Country Club. For more information, visit www.hamptonhills.com

CONCIERGE SERVICE MAKES HOME REPAIRS EZBZ By Elizabeth Darwen

A

fter a week’s worth of heavy rain and record winds in the Hamptons, one Montauk family’s garden is destroyed just before a holiday weekend. Tree limbs line the property, shrubbery is destroyed and grass patches are everywhere. They can reach out to companies via Google, but they received a bunch of overinflated estimates from entities with bad reviews previously, and the businesses they called on Yelp are unavailable because of the holiday. However, there’s one free concierge service that will save the day— myEZBZ (MYEZBZ.com). The innovative social platform myEZBZ connects consumers with businesses directly in real-time to satisfy personal projects and home repairs, like this family’s landscaping issues. myEZBZ does this by allowing people, like this family in distress, to quickly file a request with photos and a description completely free of charge. Once they have submitted the request, landscaping businesses within the vicinity of their Montauk abode will receive an email containing their request and photos of the damage. This enables businesses to quickly make a best-possible estimate of the cost of the project. This gives the family the choice in deciding which service provider best suits their needs and they can then proceed with the transaction. Each business within the platform is vetted through myEZBZ’s patent pending technology, ensuring that each one that receives an inquiry from one of the platform’s users is legitimate. Founded in 2011 by CEO Shana 30 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Schlossberg, myEZBZ was set up with the mission of connecting small businesses with the consumer on a fair market platform. Through her personal experiences in the telecom industry, she learned that people pay top dollar to be amongst the first listed in the Yellow Pages, because research suggests people will often ignore anything listed after the fourth business under a specific category. This means that businesses with more capital behind them might get listed above those which might have the best reputation. To combat this, myEZBZ prides itself on not utilizing “pay for play” measures like a top Google or Yelp search result, meaning that every business has an equal opportunity to provide services. Instead myEZBZ awards badges to contractors and businesses based on their practices and the overall customer experience. So the small mom and pop businesses have the same opportunities as a massive corporaterun business with access to capital for boosted search results and an SEO team. With all the steps My EZBZ takes to ensure consumer-business satisfaction, it is almost guaranteed this family will get optimal care and utilize this platform for other services, like fixing broken appliances, pumping water out of their basement after a flood or finding a personal trainer that makes house calls. For more information, visit www.myezbz.com.

25A Healthy Living

One Step, One Fork, One Goal at a Time By: Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN

E

very day I speak with numerous clients eager to embark on a new healthy way of life. Some of them dream of times when they can run a marathon, others dream of running a mile, and others simply wish to tie their shoe without pain. Regardless of the individuals’ specific nutritional or lifestyle goal, I always have the same piece of advice: “small changes lead to big results.” Ultimately, if you want to stick to any type of change (whether it is a dietary change, an exercise change, or even a larger lifestyle change), you have to tweak your habits. Our current “habits” have taken years, or even decades, to “perfect” and therefore they are not going to change overnight. A healthy lifestyle takes time. You cannot change everything at once to be successful long-term. Choosing one to three small changes per week will enable you to create new habits that you are more apt to stick with. Throughout your journey, you’ll be learning, trying new things, and figuring out what works best for you, your health, and your individual life. To get you started with this journey, here are some powerful steps for you to begin: 1) Eat a balanced breakfast daily. Try to eat breakfast within the first hour of waking to get your metabolism fired up for the day ahead. Balance your plate with a high fiber carbohydrate, a lean protein source, and a little heart-healthy fat. Some personal favorites are: - 6 ounces of plain Greek yogurt with 1 cup mixed berries and 1 tablespoon of chia seeds - A refreshing smoothie made with 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, ½ frozen banana, 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter, and 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder - 1 slice Ezekiel bread with ½ of a small avocado and 1-2 eggs

34 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

2) Plan ahead. Every Sunday I take 1-2 hours to grocery shop and “prep” my food for the week. I always encourage my clients to do the same. Run to your local grocery store to stock your fridge and pantry with staples like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins (I like chicken breasts, lean ground beef, eggs, shrimp, and carved deli turkey), nuts and seeds, and whole grains. After my grocery run, I wash and chop vegetables like celery, carrots, and bell peppers so they are ready to eat. I also cook 1-2 cups of quinoa, brown rice, or lentils since they can easily be reheated and reused for different recipes during the week. I find that investing time in the beginning of the week (when I am less busy) enables me to make better choices when I am swamped with other tasks during the work-week. 3) Amp up your physical activity. You don’t have to belong to a gym to be active. Now with the warmer weather, you can take your exercise outdoors. If you currently exercise for 20 minutes 3 days per week, challenge yourself to add another 20 minute session this week. Cannot commit to a fourth day? Tack on an extra 5-10 minutes during the 3 days that you’re already active. Although this may not seem like much, it is a lot less daunting to add on another 10 minutes than to add on another hour! 4) Eat every 3-4 hours. Eating consistently throughout the day will help to stabilize your blood sugar. Your blood sugar level is the amount of glucose from what you eat that is circulating in your bloodstream to provide energy to cells immediately or be stored for future use. A well-balanced blood sugar level is important in regulating your hormones, triggering your body to burn stored fat, and increasing your metabolism to help you manage weight. When

you go long periods of time without eating, however, your body goes into “starvation mode,” conserving calories, storing fat, and burning muscle (not fat) for energy. 5) Decrease sugar-sweetened beverages. The calories in sugar-sweetened beverages like fruit juices and sodas do not fill you up the same way that foods would. Plus, those drinks can lead to health risks such as obesity, tooth decay, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Because it is unrealistic to expect you to cut out these sugary drinks cold-turkey, follow these tips to get acclimated: - Reduce the overall amount of ounces of sugar-sweetened beverages you consume daily. For example, if you start every morning with an 8 ounce glass of orange juice, cut down to 4-6 ounces to start. - Dilute your fruit juice with water or seltzer. Gradually add more water/ sparkling water and less juice over time until you acquire a taste for lesssugary drinks. - Make water more exciting by adding slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, mint, or melon. Let it sit overnight for enhanced flavor. - Make your own unsweetened iced tea with decaf or herbal tea bags.

laden items, it is important to find tasty replacements. Try throwing kale in the oven to make “kale chips,” freezing Greek yogurt in ice-pop trays to make protein-rich treats, or scouting out your local farmers market for okra or kohlrabi (yes, these are actual vegetables!). 7) Get into bed 10-15 minutes earlier each night. If sleep is an issue for you, aim to get into bed 10-15 minutes earlier each night. Similar to the way I recommended that you augment your physical activity, making a small tweak in your bedtime will help you gradually get more sleep without overhauling your typical routine too quickly.

A Glamorous

Philanthropist By Bobbie Catala Photos by Benno Klandt

t is with great humility and elegance that Jean Shafiroff has earned her place in the world of philanthropy. A philanthropist is a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. Over the past two decades the practice of philanthropy has advanced considerably. The role of women in philanthropy has become a hot topic. Women have become a powerful force, focused on giving back, not on selfishness. Jean’s generosity, earnest dedication, and compassion, along with outstanding managerial skills define her as a stellar volunteer fundraiser and leader of several charitable causes. Raised on Long Island, Jean was instilled at an early age by her family to always care for those in need. After graduating from Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, Jean went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and an MBA from Columbia’s Graduate School of Business. Shafiroff then worked as a Physical Therapist at St. Lukes Hospital in New York City. She later worked in public finance and in private partnerships on Wall Street, including a post in the private placement department of investment bank L.F. Rothschild, Unterberg, Towbin. After marrying Martin D. Shafiroff, Managing Director at Barclays, and starting a family, Jean spent much of her time caring for her two daughters, Jacqueline and Elizabeth. While her daughters were young, Jean was active at their schools, giving her time as class mother and grade representative, as well as volunteering for a few charities. When her daughters went off to college, Jean, having more time, became actively involved in philanthropy. Jean’s desire for compassion and treating others with kindness, dignity and respect led her to devote herself to giving. She lives the role of a philanthropic leader. Jean possesses the remarkable ability to connect different charitable groups with interesting people and resources. Her work reminds us of our connection to one another, and the importance of caring. Jean wears many hats as a board member, chairwoman, underwriter, and hostess of many charitable events. The charaties where she serves on the board include New York Women’s Foundation, JBFCS, New York City Mission Society, The French Heritage Society, The Couture Council, which supports the museum at The Fashion Institute of Technology, The Lighthouse International Advisory Board, Southampton Bath and Tennis Club Charitable Foundation and Southampton Animal Shelter. Jean chaired the Southampton Hospital Annual Summer Gala in 2010, 2011 and 2013 raising $1.7 million, $2 million and $1.75 million respectively, proving this dynamic organizer gets results. Jean has encouraged her daughters to realize the importance of philanthropy. Sharing the passion with her daughters Elizabeth and Jackie, Jean has become involved in animal rescue. Her work with Southampton Animal Shelter has raised milions over the last four years for the no kill shelter. Last year's James Bond themed gala that she chaired, honoring Georgina Bloomberg brought out over 300 guests including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Southampton Mayor Mark Epley. The annual “Unconditional Love Gala” supports the adoption of many adorable cats and dogs, as well as caring for over 1200 homeless animals a year. The shelter presently has about 30 pit bulls as this breed remains the longest because they are the hardest to find homes for. The Shafiroff’s are great supporters of animal welfare and have two pit bulls, Daisy and Bella. They have fostered many dogs, and have even rescued dogs while on vacation. They brought a dog back from Panama City, who was later adopted by the musician Sting’s daughter Mickey. This soft-spoken and eloquent woman has outstanding skills when it comes to fundraising. With most of the funding being individual, Jean does not take “no” personally and realizes that a rejection today could be a yes tomorrow. Her chief task is reaching out to people, bringing in funds by selling tables for the events, using diplomacy to persuade for the cause of giving. An enormous amount of work is involved, as an event can take 10 or 11 months to plan. A table at one of the galas can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000. Jean not only fundraises, but is an advocate and encourages others to get involved in whatever ways they can. She gives a great deal of time as well as available resources of her own, serving as a leader, but is a believer in the team approach. During our conversation Jean shared with me her devotion to charitable causes. Through her travels, which have included Cambodia, China, Jordan, Columbia, and Haiti, she has witnessed enormous suffering and inequalities among people. Jean cares deeply about those less fortunate than herself, and feels everyone should be able to lead a good life, with the opportunity to receive a good education and move forward. Making their home in New York City and Southampton, her husband and two daughters are also dedicated to serving their community. Jean considers herself blessed, and is proud of her Long Island heritage. She celebrates our beautiful beaches, summer greenery, great restaurants, hospitals, good police and fire department, and great people committed to our country. Also loving New York City, she enjoys the diversity, along with the people and opportunities. Jean appreciates the

goodness of people and their work toward good means to make our country strong. Jean continues to dazzle as she attends the numerous galas and events. I had to ask about her fabulous style! Some of her favorite designers are Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, B. Michael, and Zang Toi, a Malaysian designer she works directly with. Possessing the ability to make things work together, Jean will put together a Chanel bag with a dress from H&M and look fabulous. She does save her magnificent gowns and will re-wear them to later events. Oscar de la Renta Co. recently asked Jean to borrow one of her pieces for an exhibit in San Francisco. Jean has been profiled on the Chic Index as a fashionable New Yorker, and featured in Hamptons Magazine best dressed list. When she does donate her clothing Jean is careful to make sure it goes to a good place, and is a giver to Lighthouse Guild. Jean feels dressing elegantly is part of being a woman, and she certainly does it well. Keeping fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to Jean. This lovely lady somehow finds the time to exercise numerous times a week. She enjoys classes as opposed to a personal trainer. She watches her diet and eats chicken or fish...no red meat. Plenty of salads and fresh local fruits and vegetables help Jean keep herself in such fabulous shape. Jean’s compassion and dedication is inspiring. Jean told me she believes if we have the ability to do something good we should. She is concerned deeply about the big divide, and the shrinking middle class. The numbers are staggering, with 30% of New York City children living below the poverty level. Women around the world are not always considered equal to men, nor given the educational opportunities they are entitled to. Having traveled the world, she has seen the injustices, and feels the greatest achievement is to see the results from the work done. Jean admits that it is not always easy, but loves the volunteer work she performs. This notable philanthropist feels her work gives meaning to her life, and encourages others to become involved with well run charities that are responsible. Her assistance and dedication has helped to raise millions of dollars. To date, Jean has been honored by several organizations including by the New York City Mission Society who gave her their Dina Merrill Award for Public Service. Her hands on involvement with the multiple causes she supports is indisputable. Jean Shafiroff is a remarkable woman with a mission for caring and a strong sense of giving back, along with the great virtue of being a hard working, responsible, compassionate human being.

KRISTAN NEWMAN

Creative Genius . . . On Her Terms!

V

By Fred DiMenna

an Gogh took brush to canvas, Beethoven arranged musical notes and Shakespeare manipulated words. Nevertheless, a common thread unifies the work of these masters. Indeed, creative genius can manifest in countless mediums of expression.

Kristan Newman was blessed with “the creative gene” at a young age when drawing, painting and playing music came naturally. However, her artistic evolution took a different path. “Decorating cakes was a natural for me,” she explains. She attended Johnson & Wales University to acquire the baking skills necessary to create the medium upon which she could display her artistry. After graduating, Kristan worked as an assistant pastry chef at a gourmet cake shop and within one year was promoted to executive pastry chef. When the business closed, she began working out of The Metropolitan in Glen Cove and Wonderful Wedding Cakes was born. “It’s very creative,” she explains. “My client presents an idea and my goal is to produce an edible masterpiece that moves you. I’m not just making a food product.” Her most challenging assignment was creating a replica of the Guggenheim Museum. The melding of triangles, ovals, arcs, circles and squares that is the Guggenheim was Kristan’s first experience making a three-dimensional cake. To the uninformed, using “3-D” to describe a cake seems redundant given that all known matter occupies three dimensions. However, in cakedecorating lingo, the term means that the cake is an actual replica of the subject. Unlike many 3D cakes that comprise PVC piping and wood, Kristan’s

62 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

are 100% edible and she strives to make her creations as pleasing to the palate as they are to the eye. Kristan’s most time-consuming project was a 3-D cake to celebrate a client’s 98th birthday. It consisted of 16 stacked presents with the man sitting on top. “It was the first time I had to make a cake that actually looked like a specific person,’ she explains. “I used fondant for his skin, which was tricky because you have to work fast before it dries. I actually failed, but his age worked in my favor because his skin wound up wrinkled!” Decorating cakes at an established catering hall provided exposure that brought Kristan’s talents to light. However, recognizing the need to grow, she recently moved Wonderful Wedding Cakes to a 900-square-foot storefront on Forest Avenue in Locust Valley. “It’s a custom cake shop,” she explains. “Everything is tweaked to intimately satisfy what you want from the cake.” Settled in her new studio, Kristan’s creative genius is likely to soar. However, in addition to creativity, mindset is an important part of her artistry. “You must be able to adapt because things don’t always go as planned,” she says. Another atypical challenge is that in this medium of expression, the artist is typically not present when the audience enjoys the creation. “I get phone calls expressing thanks, but it can be difficult,” she reveals. “However, I’m satisfied if my vision is fulfilled and the rest is icing on the cake!” For information regarding Kristan Newman and Wonderful Wedding Cakes, visit her at wonderfulweddingcakes.com or contact her via Facebook at Wonderful Wedding Cakes.

Doug Cohen & Justin Aronoff

THE BOYS ARE BACK!

D

By Nikita Coelho, Melissa Rose & Sara Sherman

oug Cohen and Justin Aronoff met each other in 2013 while working as butchers in the now closed Meathouse on Northern Blvd in Roslyn. They clicked immediately and saw in each other a suitable partner for their future dreams. The opportunity to work together presented itself when it was announced that the Meathouse would be closing. The boys, operating as Center Cuts, Inc., rented the old Primetime Butcher Shop space at 382 Willis Ave. in Roslyn Heights (across from the CVS-Starbucks strip mall). While spending time at the store in order to write this article, I was made aware of the fact Doug and Justin knew many of their customers by name and the customers also knew their names. This surprised me because I am not familiar with any of my neighborhood merchants by name.

64 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

One customer, Debra S. insisted on telling me that, "if it weren't for Center Cuts, my three kids would never eat meat!! She said, "The Maple Bourbon steak tips and teriyaki skirt steak are a staple in her home". Another gentleman chimed in to rave about the Kobe beef that he had purchased over the weekend. He then said "Life is too short to not treat yourself, sometimes." The two boys completely renovated the store, doing much of the work themselves. They have created a space that is bright, immaculate and has a New York City vibe. Just recently they started working with a well-known nutritionist that lives in the area. In order to accommodate her clients, they will be preparing foods without oil.

Upon entering the store, I was overwhelmed with the aroma of warm apple strudel. The meats were displayed beautifully; the employees all had a smile on their face. These two young men are really doing things the right way. A young lady who was in the store at the time insisted upon telling me about a holiday the boys had catered for her. "The brisket melted in my mouth, and everything on the table was absolutely delicious. I was able to have an amazing holiday with my family without lifting a finger! Doug said, "Our goal is to take the stress out of making dinner every night. We offer plenty of pre-marinated meats & chicken breasts as well as a large variety of hot foods, prepared side dishes and salads to go. We also offer vegetarian options daily. We can prepare and cook your meal and deliver it right to your home. We cater parties all over the island, and come prepared with a chef, servers, and even a grill if you need one. This weekend we will

grill in Westhampton for approximately 150 people at a fundraiser for the Delete Blood Cancer charity. While speaking with Justin I asked him a simple question. “What has been your most satisfying experience since opening your business?” He replied, “Obviously going to work each day for myself is the most satisfying, however during last Thanksgiving a local business owner had us deliver about thirty turkeys that he gifted to all of his employees. It was such a great feeling to know that we helped to make so many Thanksgiving dinners special. I’ll never forget that.” I've read other reviews from Newsday and other local papers raving about these two young men, and now I understand why. One customer really said it best, "Tell your readers to stop by, and they will be very happily surprised."

I

t’s not a summer on Long Island if there isn’t at least one all-out clam or lobster bake. It begins with the fruits of the sea and extends further, which includes the décor and numerous menu items. I love to set up one long table -- what some refer to as communal dining -- and use the bright colored menu items to light up the table. Corn on the cob, lobster, mussels, clams, all present beautifully on a table covered with a neutral colored cloth flanked by benches. When your guests enter, they are instinctively drawn to sit together and indulge in an array of summer flavors. If it is in fact July, a red, white, and blue color theme compliments the bright red lobsters. Arrange two plates per guest to accommodate the size of lobster and provide a two-pronged lobster fork, a nutcracker, a ramekin for individual butter for dipping and a lemon wrapped in cheesecloth for seasoning. Set up plenty of decorative buckets and bowls on the table so the guests can discard the shells and corn cobs easily. Lastly, a wet napkin is a perfectly convenient accent – make sure it is within reach on the table.

In addition to corn, a tomato stack of sliced tomato alternating with fresh mozzarella fits in perfectly with the theme and color of early July. Offering your guests more than one vegetable is key and simple during the summer months. Organic produce is available at most of the farm stands. Fresh mussels are inexpensive and can be prepared in a variety of sauces. For a traditional clambake, I prefer a sauce of tomato, garlic, white wine, and fresh herbs. There are also plenty of indigenous oysters out east and they’re ready for shucking. Consider a sidebar with a few different types of oysters set on a bed of ice, along with the requisite horseradish, Tabasco, and fresh lemon wedges. You can hire and onsite shucker if you like as oysters need to be eaten shortly after they’re opened, otherwise keep the unopened oysters on a bed of ice and start shucking just before your guests arrive.

Lobster: Lobster is traditionally steamed, but for cooking on the grill, wrap the lobster in aluminum foil and create a pouch to hold the lobster. Before you close up the foil, add seasonings like lemon, dry white wine, sea salt and pepper. Close the pouch and cook on the grill on high heat for 20 minutes. In addition, you could include potatoes and corn with a few pats of butter in the foil so as to provide a clambake-in-a-pouch. It’s an alternative way of serving, otherwise you can place all the elements of the clambake in serving dishes on the table. For a festive enhancement of the beverages, re label them as it lends a personalized and patriotic touch for the holiday. A visit to your local office supply store for the labels and a color printer make this transformation turnkey.

Hemingways Nairobi Living in Luxury Among Lions By Janis Turk

N

airobi can be intimidating for a first-time visitor. First, there’s the sea of people in long airport lines, followed by the wagon-wheel spoke pattern of tedious traffic jams the minute you leave the parking lot. Then, there’s the steady march of pedestrians walking too close for comfort to the roads and highways. And then are bastions of big baboons that sit waiting for handouts (happen to have apple or candy bar in your car?) lining the lush green rural roads as you come into Karen, an area east town where many visitors stay. Mind you, entering Nairobi for the first time is exciting—yes even exhilarating—still it can be slightly overwhelming, especially after a long flight from New York. But I have a cure for that. What first-time travelers need is a way to ease into Africa a little at a time. A good night’s sleep in a clean, well-lighted place will give you all the fortification your body and spirit may need and will enable you to see all the chaos of Kenya as merely exciting pieces of a grand African adventure. My solution? Check into Hemingways Nairobi. Ernest “Papa” Hemingway would be proud of this place, a luxury hotel set against the backdrop of the Ngong Hills on land that was once the coffee farm of Out of Africa author Karen Blixen (aka Isak Dinesen). Sure, many

76 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

fans of the macho great white hunter Hemingway picture Papa in the wild: wearing khakis and a pith helmet, shaving with a mirror hung on a tree branch, using a canvas sack sink and a bucket shower, sleeping on an old green army cot in a low tent. They imagine him roughing it in the bush or at least sleeping in concrete cell-like hotel rooms with a one-bladed ceiling fan spinning overhead. But do they know Papa and (3rd wife) Mary spent months at a time living at The Ritz in Paris? Sure, Hemingway could rough it with the best of his macho compadres, but the truth is he often stayed at posh high-end hotels. And why not? Who doesn’t love a hot shower, crisp ironed sheets, and cups of strong espresso? Who wouldn’t enjoy a smooth Scotch sundowner drink in a leather Chesterfield sofa lined bar with an attentive bartender and pleasant low lighting? A plantation-style boutique hotel in the tony green subdivision of Karen, Hemingways Nairobi is an exclusive all-suite property that feels like it’s far from the bustle of central Nairobi, even though it’s just a serene chauffeur-driven ride from the city. A sophisticated, but still casual enough to feel comfortable, property providing full butler service, a gourmet restaurant, brasserie and bar, Hemingways is situated perfectly for quick side trips to Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and other local attractions.

Hemingways Nairobi has a tranquil ambiance. Each of the 45 suites is a generous size, all with walk-in dressing rooms and a terrace with arresting views of the Ngong Hills. Enjoy a light lunch in the Brasserie overlooking the well-tended gardens. The subdivision of Karen, where Hemingways Nairobi is set, is the site of Karen Blixen’s farm, as highlighted in the film Out of Africa. Her house is now a museum less than a mile from the hotel. While there, take an exhilarating trip to Nairobi National Park to see buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, baboon, zebra, wildebeest, rhino and cheetah. Then return to Hemingways Nairobi for international cuisine in the fine dining restaurant with its Hollywood theme inspired by movies about Africa, featuring a wall filled with quotes about Africa from movies and writers, including Hemingway himself. Each of the suites at Hemmingways is named for famous people with ties to Africa. There is a Hollywood wing with rooms celebrating actors, like William Holden who filmed movies here before buying the Mount Kenya Country Club. There is also a writer’s wing with suites celebrating famous writers like Hemingway, Beryl Markham, Karen Blixen and more. There’s even an explorers’ wing with suites dedicated to people like Dr. David Livingstone (“Livingstone, I presume?”). I’ve long been fascinated with Out of Africa author Karen Blixen, so I was pleased to book the Blixen Suite—which is one of the finest suites I’ve ever had the privilege of enjoying. Entering the Blixen Suite, I felt as though I’d entered my own large posh apartment. The pale yellow walls matched the color of the afternoon sun that fell on the hills outside the suite’s two big verandas. Guests are greeted by fresh flowers in the sitting room, dining room, bedroom and baths, and

when I arrived an ice bucket in my room held a cold bottle of champagne. A butler, Maxwell, was never more than a phone call away and was constantly ready to spoil me. He first came and showed me how to use the television and music system and all the light controls, and then asked if he could unpack my clothes or draw a bath for me. That evening, Maxwell even left a hand-written poem tucked into a little scroll on the dresser by my bed during the turn-down service. Such thoughtful small touches set Hemingways apart from other hotels in the area. To help loosen the tense muscles after a long flight, schedule a massage at Hemingways spa, where beauticians will perform the sacred rituals and the secret arts of cleansing and reinvigoration. Be sure to book the hotels signature Kenya Coffee Scrub Ritual, an invigorating coffee exfoliation followed by a nourishing full body massage. Afterward, relax in a resting room overlooking the pool with views of the Ngong Hills or visit the salon where professional stylists and beauticians can take care of your coiffure, manicure, pedicure, threading and waxing. There is nothing but peace and pampering at Hemingways. Author Karen Blixen writes, “You know you are truly alive when you’re living among lions.” Hemingways may seem like a posh international hotel, complete with a spa, fine restaurants and good bars—and certainly it is—but what makes it special is that, even though it is safe and gated, still there you are living among lions, and Africa, a land of wild adventure, waits outside its doors. Papa would have loved this place. hemingways-nairobi.com July 2015 | 77

THE WestHouse Hotel A Charming Boutique

By Melissa Rose

fresh take on the boutique hospitality industry, WestHouse creates a luxury experience in the heart of Manhattan that treats the guests as “Residents.” The hotel is ideally situated by New York City’s top attractions such as Central Park, Times Square, Carnegie Hall, Broadway and the MoMA. Jeffrey Beers International designed this hotel to have the element of an upscale Westside townhouse, inspired by the 1920’s Art Deco Era. The recently opened hotel welcomed its “residents” in 2013 and has since been refining and up scaling its amenities such as their fullservice restaurant offering premium beverages and international culinary expertise to their guests called the Den. In addition to the excellent food is their luxury corridors and guest rooms with sophisticated and classic architecture. Last but not least the newly opened hotspot in the hotel, called The Terrace, offers a cozy, intimate dining and living space with a luxury look and feel that can accommodate parties and is exclusively located on the 23rd floor of the hotel. This glamorous, award-winning design exudes the “home away from home” feel that is sought after by many hotels, but is rarely achieved. The Terrace being accompanied with its own suite called the WestRoom, serves savory breakfasts, afternoon treats and barista-brewed coffees so the guests have a personalized and energized start to the morning right outside their door. The Den presents the guests with the opportunity to indulge and the hotel supplies the guests with a 24-hour Workout Room with the best of New York City’s personal trainers uoon request. Hampton Court Palace Celebrates 500 Years

By Victoria R. Crosby Photos Courtesy of Historic Royal Palaces

I

f you’ve watched the PBS television show, Wolf Hall, read the prize winning novels by Hilary Mantel, or seen the plays, you have visited Hampton Court Palace.

Well not really, but the palace, just outside of the City of London, in Surrey, has been the home of many Kings and Queens of England, and is closely associated with Henry Vlll. This year Hampton Court Palace is celebrating it’s 500th anniversary with festivities, which the whole family can enjoy, including a Tudor Jousting Tournament, music and dancing, food festivals, flower shows, outdoor film shows and many other special events. 82 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Hampton Court is actually much older than 500 years, with origins going back to the 1400s; it was occupied by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the Archbishop of York, who was a favorite of King Henry. It had been a monastery before Wolsey lived there, and he spent lavish sums of money making it into a palace. But when he fell from favor, he either gave the palace to King Henry, perhaps as a way of delaying his fall from grace, or Henry just appropriated it, depending on which story you choose to believe. The palace is in two distinct styles, the Tudor and Baroque, as the palace was expanded and “modernized” over the years by the Hanoverians, (the King Georges,) and the Stuarts.

Changes were also made during the reign of Queen Victoria, although no monarch has lived there since King George l, but It was Queen Victoria who opened the palace and gardens to the public. Visitors enter in the oldest part of the palace, past statues of animal heads, known as the King’s Beasts, on the bridge over the moat, which represent the families of King Henry Vlll and his third wife, Jane Seymour. The famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren, designed a new wing, after demolishing part of the Tudor section, for King William and Queen Mary (for whom the college in Virginia is named). The Great Hall, England’s greatest medieval hall, is decorated with tapestries from the time of Henry Vlll. In 1603 Shakespeare’s company performed in the hall for King James l. In the Royal Pew you can see a re-creation of King Henry’s crown. The original was melted down, on the order of Oliver Cromwell in 1649, when the monarchy was abolished. The Cumberland Art Gallery, within the palace, has works from the Royal Collection, by artists including Holbein, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Canaletto. As you walk through the rooms, you may see actors portraying the Kings and Queens, and other characters from that period in history. They stay in character, and sometimes engage you in conversation.

So you may see King Henry Vlll with one of his wives in the Tudor part of the palace, and King George, or the Prince Regent, in the Baroque rooms. Visitors really get a sense of stepping back in time, and being part of history. Hampton Court is also known for beautiful gardens, and the world’s most famous maze. On my visit last year, we took the train from Waterloo Station in London to Hampton Court Station, which took about half an hour, then a short walk to the palace. We traveled back to London by a boat on the Thames, right next to the palace. It takes about two hours, but it goes through locks, past picturesque villages, and through tranquil countryside. There are snacks and drinks served aboard, so it is well worth the time. With the recent acquisition of Hillsborough Castle, in Northern Ireland, there are now six palaces; Kensington, Kew, The Banqueting House, the Tower of London and Hampton Court, which are part of one non-profit organization, the Historic Royal Palaces. HRP receives no government funding, and relies on tourism and memberships to maintain these buildings.

MAGNA CARTA MADNESS IN ENGLAND THIS SUMMER

T

By Janis Turk

hink there’s nothing hip or cool about the Magna Carta? Think again. This summer, Magna Carta Madness has hit London, making Britain’s ancient charter seem suddenly—after a mere 800 years— sexy once more. Why all the fuss? Well, it’s just that this summer London is hosting a little family reunion of sorts. Right now, three famous distant relatives are meeting there for the first time: The Magna Carta, an original Thomas Jefferson-penned Declaration of Independence and the US Bill of Rights are currently on display at the British Library’s Magna Carta: Law, Liberty and Legacy exhibit, which runs until September 1, in honor of the Magna Carta’s 800th birthday. The exhibit is making quite a splash across the pond since it’s the first time in that these historic US documents and two of four surviving original Magna Carta will be exhibited together. Happy Birthday, Magna Carta So what’s so special about the Magna Carta? The “Great Charter” (as it’s sometimes called) was sealed on June 19, 1215 between land barons and their tyrannical ruler, King John of England. It’s significant because, for the first time it limited the rights of royalty (if only for a brief time) paving the way 84 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

toward many of the civil liberties that the British and Americans now enjoy, such as the right to own and inherit property and the right to fair trial. It’s also “sexy” because it was one of the first charters in history to grant and protect women’s rights. Throughout the ages, the Magna Carta is has been called the cornerstone of civil liberties, and echoes of Magna Carta are found worldwide, wherever democracy is upheld, say British historians in Lincoln, a small picturesque British town that is also home to an original Magna Carta. Posh London digs When heading to London for your own little Magna Carta birthday bash, why not celebrate with a splurge and check into one the newest and most luxe 5-star hotels in all of England. Rosewood London, the capital city’s finest new luxury hotel, which opened last October near Covent Garden in Holburn. With its wrought-iron gates leading to an intimate courtyard, one gets the sense of being tucked away from the traffic and noise of London in a large fashionable flat. Following an extensive renovation that transformed the 1914 Edwardian Belle Époque building, the hotel’s original architectural features have been

meticulously restored, including a grand Pavonazzo marble staircase which rises up 7 stories beneath a 166-foot cupola. With stunning stylish black and white marble striped floors in the lobby, low lighting, lots of dark wood, with gleaming touches of silver and brass, Rosewood London dazzles with all the panache of a posh London pad, the tony new hotel features 262 guestrooms and 44 suites. Two restaurants in house offer both classic and contemporary dishes, and of course tea time at Rosewood London is nothing short of glamourous. A corner suite at Rosewood London features two white Carrera marblelined bathrooms, blackout drapes that open and close with the touch of a button, a large sitting room and foyer and hallway leading to the inner sanctum of the suite, a Bose sound system, large flat-screened televisions and a king-sized bed with crisp linens—like a dreamy large residence. Guests in such suites have 24-hour access to a butler who will treat them like royalty. Royal Shopping Spot The Holburn Tube station is just steps away from the hotel, so take the Metro to one of the finest department stores in London: Fortnum and Mason, not far from Piccadilly Circus. A favorite store of The Queen, the story carries a Royal Warrant—which is something like a royal seal of

approval. What better way to start the day than shopping in style? Next, dine at a favorite old school spot at a stylish St. James Place address. Visit the Lyttelton lounge and restaurant at The Stafford London hotel and sip a Pimm’s Cup at its iconic American Bar, famous its walls filled with celebrity portraits and sports memorabilia. Then hop in the back of a big London taxi and head to the British Library. Magnificent Magna Carta It’s really rather exciting to behold an 800 year-old piece of parchment paper that would change the world, and thrilling to see our own American history-making documents beside it. However, it’s the story behind the Great Charter and the ideals behind it that are most fascinating. Once you understand the ripple effect the Magna Carta had on democracy across the globe, you’ll be glad you made the trip to London to see it. Sure, London is always fashionable, smart and sexy—so you hardly need a new reason to go. But this year’s Magna Carta Madness offers an even better reason to head to London and celebrate summer in style. So Happy Birthday, Magna Carta. Over the past 800 years, human rights and democracy have come a long way, Baby—and, yeah, there’s something really sexy about that.

ROSEWOOD LONDON A Glimpse at Palace Life

I

By Janis Turk

used to visit London and stand outside at the gates of Buckingham Palace wondering where, in all those hundreds of rooms, the royals might live and what their posh palace apartments must be like. I don’t wonder any more.

After spending a weekend at the Rosewood London, I know exactly how it feels. Rosewood London has been open less than a year, yet its timeless elegance and the historic 1914 Belle Époque building that houses it makes it seem to have been part of London forever. Entering the hotel grounds, guests pass through an archway that opens to a grand Edwardian courtyard surrounded by seven stories of tall windows, sills lined with hedge-filled flower boxes and doorways flanked by tall topiaries. A private passageway into tranquility, the setting (just steps from Covent Garden) is unique among London luxury hotels, and Rosewood London’s dental-molding-lined exteriors seem as palatial as any royal residence. As guests enter, a footman holds open the door to the lobby, where black and white bands of Italian marble create striking striped patterns in the floor.

86 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Cozy cognac-colored leather chairs studded with nail-head trim fill the space alongside tall velvet banquette seating, and the adjacent Mirror Room welcomes weary guests with deep-tufted Chesterfield couches of a cheery mod yellow. Contemporary light fixtures, oversized mirrors and black lacquered tables set with white flowers give the space a fresh contemporary ambiance. Fashioned from the finest materials and curated to the highest standards, Rosewood London’s 262 guestrooms and 44 suites are all designed by Tony Chi and Associates—which means, unlike the real royal palaces, there is nothing old fashioned and stuffy about them. One of the most striking features of the hotel is its Grand Pavonazzo marble staircase, which like other parts of the historic building is protected with Listed Building status. Rosewood London’s eight signature ‘house’ suites are among the capital city’s grandest and most spacious and include the Manor House—the only suite in the world to have its very own postcode. It also has its own private entrance on High Holborn, as well as a private elevator. Designed to capture Old World Charm with a modern twist, the nearly 2,000 square foot space is stylish, sophisticated, edgy, entertaining and distinguished.

My corner suite wasn’t quite that large—but it was close—and much bigger than most London flats, let alone other most other hotel rooms in the city. With a large foyer and a mirror-lined hallway featuring a wall of concealed closets and a spacious guest powder room, the space opened to a large living room with a dining room table, a velvet sofa, broad coffee table, oversized chairs and an enormous flat screen television. With the push of a button, drapes opened and closed in all rooms and set mood lighting. A large cabinet in the hall held barware and assorted spirits and snacks, and just beyond that a large salon with a king-sized bed covered in white ironed sheets and a fluffy down duvet awaited me. Beyond that, a desk and vanity area led to a large walk-through closet and into a giant bathroom lined in white Italian marble. A butler’s entrance into that room allowed staff to quietly enter, unpack my luggage, take my laundry to be washed and pressed, and draw my bath for me or bring champagne—all without being seen. With music from my laptop lilting through the suite’s Bose Bluetooth speakers, I could sit and sip tea on a velvet divan, read a book, and never feel the need to explore the city. In fact, I had to force myself to go outside to revisit my favorite London spots. Rosewood London is situated in one of the capital’s most historic thoroughfares, High Holborn, just steps away from the Holborn Underground stop, so it is easy to take the tube to Piccadilly Circus for sight-seeing, Fortnum and Mason and Harrods for shopping, the West End for theatre, The Ritz

for tea, and then St. James Place, where I simply adore the American Bar at The Stafford London hotel. Since Rosewood London is so close to Covent Garden, I went there, too, and on Saturday morning I took the tube to Borough Market, bustling with vendors and overflowing with flowers, cheese carts, and fruit and vegetable stands. Before checking out of the hotel, I treated myself to afternoon tea in the Mirror Room while a light mist fell on London. The wait staff, who always remembered my name, treated me as if I were royalty. Thanks to Rosewood London, I need never wonder again what it’s like to live in a palace. Visit Rosewood London at rosewoodhotels.com/en/london and learn all about its lovely Sense Spa and Fitness Suite, as well as their dining options at Scarfes Bar, Holborn Dining Room, Holborn Delicatessen, Mirror Room and Lobby. Saruni Samburu Wellbeing Space Enjoy an African Afternoon Safari Spa

F

By Janis Turk

or most travelers enjoying African safari vacations, the best part is spotting “The Big Five”—getting a perfect photo of a lioness with her cubs, seeing a giraffe silhouetted against the sky, or hearing the trumpet sound of an elephant raising its trunk. Another special safari ritual is “Sundowner” time, when the guide parks the Land Rover atop a hill with magnificent vistas of the wild landscape and everyone toasts the sunset. But for me, the most serene part of any safari stay in Africa is that quiet meditative moment when I lie on a table overlooking the wilderness with the wind cooling and sun kissing my tired body, while a masseuse works magic on my aching muscles. A therapeutic massage can bring bliss to all the bruised and tight places travelers get from being bumped around on dirt roads for days, the stiff spots

90 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

that set in during the long flight from the states, and the weary shoulders that carried a camera bag to too many distant watering holes. At Saruni Samburu, a stylish desert mountain safari camp set in the high red rock wilderness, guests can enjoy the Samburu Wellbeing Space with its open view of Kalama Wildlife Conservancy, where elephant, kudu and giraffe roam freely. Saruni Samburu is a stunningly well-designed lodge located just a few miles north of Samburu National Reserve in Kenya’s wild north. Surrounded by 240,000 acres of private conservancy, and perched on a spectacular viewpoint, its six villas, spacious lounge, open dining room and large swimming pools overlook several watering holes where the famous Samburu elephant,

leopard, reticulated giraffe, Oryx and Grevy’s zebra gather to drink. It’s also home to a great little spa. In collaboration with the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees (Stresa, Italy) and its world-famous spa, Centro Benessere Stresa, Saruni Samburu’s Wellbeing Space spa offers a serene and relaxing environment where guests enjoy massage and restorative and therapeutic treatments under the supervision of highly trained staff. A short walk from the pool area, the spa awaits a little spa with doors that open to the wind where a trained masseuse offers many options for a restorative massage or wellness treatment. Using Olurmuru seeds (Albizia Harvey) to reduce muscular discomfort and pure gel from Usunguru (Aloe

Kedongesis) for a sunburnt back, the deep massage treatment relaxes stiff muscles and moisturizes the skin. Guests can also opt for other treatments, including, facials, drainage massages, sport massages, oil treatments, aroma therapy and more. One complimentary "back and neck" massage, is included, free of charge, for all guests through the regular safari package. After days of game drives and walking safaris, nights of star gazing, and seeking out the Big Five—there’s nothing like a massage in the shade of an Acacia tree or in a quiet safari lodge spa. It’s one of the best parts of any wild and peaceful African adventure. sarunisamburu.com

Von Zwehl

smiles as she speaks, and her voice is melodic with a subtle hint of laughter in the undertone and it is immediately apparent that JoAnne is in love with making her art. Photo by Josephine Rose Lalli-Jungkunst

JoAnne Von Zwehl has been commissioned by many prominent families, on Long Island and across the country, creating beautiful, timeless family portraits for the estate home. It’s often a portrait of the entire family, or perhaps a moment between a mother and child, a father and his son, or even a portrait of children at play. Working from a photograph, Joanne creates a beautiful rendition of life in paint.

A

By Carla Hall D’Ambra

rtist JoAnne Von Zwehl is happiest when she’s standing in the light. It’s a Wednesday afternoon in Brookville, New York, and JoAnne is locked away in her art studio on the second floor of her home, standing in a perfect sunray that’s beaming through the French doors overlooking the view of her lush green North Shore lawn. It’s that perfect time of day on Long Island, that time of day that illuminates us, and highlights the beauty we all possess. JoAnne captures that perfect light in everything and everyone she paints, and her subjects are always shown in their best moments, in their best light. “You see how the canvas illuminates here?” JoAnne asks with an enthusiastic sparkle in her blue eyes as she points to the area of the face on the canvas she’s currently creating. “This is the magic. This is the light.” JoAnne 96 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

In her work, JoAnne goes beyond the canvas. With each commission, she gets to know her subject prior to the paint. She spends time with her clients, listening intently, getting a feel for the lifestyle, combining what she learns with her own very strong creative vision. She may visit the client’s home and consider the space before she puts a brush in the paint. She makes recommendations and considers interior design factors. JoAnne wants her work to live perfectly in the home, as if the painting is an extension of the room. “Nothing is more rewarding than the reaction of the viewer,” says JoAnne in talking about her work, “I love seeing reactions. It warms my heart.” The path of an artist is often difficult and there is no guaranteed formula for success in the pursuit of creativity. Even though JoAnne knew early on that she had a tremendous desire to paint and create, her father, philanthropist Joseph Von Zwehl, insisted that she pursue an education in finance because he thought a degree in finance would guarantee a happy, prosperous life for his daughter. Prosperous, yes, but happy was a stretch as JoAnne struggled with her inner desire to make art.

In the midst of her financial success as a consultant in her own real estate business, JoAnne signed up for art classes as a way of decompressing from the stress of her fast paced, hectic career. She attended classes in Great Neck and the class was made up of mainly of children learning to paint. This did not deter JoAnne and she immediately began unfolding her talent for painting. Her teacher in Great Neck, Vivian Christopoulos, now 84, says that JoAnne quickly learned the skills and techniques required and more importantly, JoAnne had a strong burning desire to paint. Her work soon flourished and came alive. Today, JoAnne’s work lives not only on the canvas, but also in lithograph prints, on book and CD covers, and on prayer cards. One of her prints “Our Lady, Queen of America,” hangs in the office of Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano. Making art is not JoAnne’s only focus these days. A single mom with three children, JoAnne also runs a faith-based organization, M.A.N. Foundation, with her mother, Noreen Von Zwehl, providing water, food and supplies to third world countries as well as building Catholic churches, religious schoolhouses and

convents. She is also president of Rosa Mystica, a beautiful, spiritual 160-acre campus in Edmeston, New York, where retreats and conferences are held. JoAnne Von Zwehl has a strong faith and works diligently to bring light and happiness into this world. In everything she does, there is a smile and a prayer. She loves to laugh and have fun, and enjoys the Long Island lifestyle and nightlife with her circle of friends. JoAnne believes in finding balance in life. When life gets hectic and seems out of sync, JoAnne relies on her faith and her art. Her art studio is her happy place. In her studio, JoAnne can focus her creative energy and play in the colors that tell the story of that special moment in time she is capturing on the canvas. JoAnne is thrilled when it all comes together as she imagined it would. Just as when JoAnne imagined those years ago, that she could take that step into the unknown and become an artist. JoAnne Von Zwehl is happy standing in the light, and it is beautiful. joannevonzwehl.com July 2015 | 97

The Music of The Flowers By Victoria R. Crosby

Listen to the music of the flowers, a garden party, scented garlands, ambiance of elegance. An abundance of blooms, a riot of color caress the senses. A full blown bouquet in splendid array, a perfect, perfumed summer’s day. Summer, like youth is a state of mind. Look around and you will find, hummingbirds, butterflies, fluffy clouds, azure skies, fragrant breeze, summer kiss. Ah, the bliss of summer.

Ferrari 488 GTB The Future of Supercars?

T

By Jake Denner

he future is here and to some it may not sound so good. The Ferrari 488 GTB is the latest Supercar to come out of Maranello and it's perhaps one of the most important automobiles to ever carry the Ferrari name. What makes it so special? Turbocharging, Laws on emissions from around the world are forcing automakers like Ferrari to use new techniques on their cars to make them faster then their predecessors, but at the same time they must comply with new emission standards. Turbocharging is nothing new, in fact it's been around for decades. This isn't even the first Ferrari to use the technology; that title is held be the legendary F40 built from 1987-1992. 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The 488 GTB it so important because it's the first time a "mass-production" Ferrari has used turbocharging, which has sparked an uproar in some automotive purists who believe a Ferrari should only be Naturally Aspirated. They think this because the way turbochargers work. After the fuel gets compressed in the cylinder in a Naturally Aspirated car the Exhaust gasses from internal combustion go directly out of the vehicle making for lots of exhaust noise and very linear delivery of horsepower, A turbocharger or turbo for short uses these gases to spin a turbine inside the turbo which forces outside air into the engine increasing pressure, which in turn makes the engine run faster while still using the same amount of fuel.

This will increase horsepower and fuel economy. At the same time, because exhaust gases are being slowed down the car is not as loud (something automotive enthusiasts like) and more importantly the engine needs to be running at a higher speed or RPM for the maximum amount of Horsepower to become accessible. This is called turbo lag, which simply means when you put the pedal to the metal the engine takes a moment to deliver all the power and it does it all at once, which often causes the wheels to lose traction even at high speed. These Turbocharges

which the 488 has 2 of gives the car some amazing statistics! A 3.9 liter Twin-Turbo V8 creating 660 HP allowing for the sprint to 60 from 0 mph to happen in just 3.0 seconds and reach a Top Speed of 208 MPH! So has Ferrari made the right call Turbocharging the most important car in their line-up? Only time will tell but either way it will go down in automotive history as one of the most important Ferrari's to ever have been created. July 2015 | 107

THE NYC PRIVATE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS HANDBOOK

We have witnessed the innocent mistakes of overwhelmed parents: thank you letters sent or addressed to the wrong directors, parents writing about their educational philosophies that are polar opposite to the school’s philosophy to which they are applying, a ten page thesis on a four year old’s strengths, couples disagreeing and arguing in the interview, parent’s failure to turn off their smartphones, asking too many questions during the group tour, acting completely disinterested, calling the admissions office incessantly or not paying proper attention to the appropriate protocol when applying to schools… to name but a few of the Jennifer BROZOST, M.A. common errors!

We have been there and we have gotten through it all smiling.
