r. Svetlana Danovich is one of the few female cosmetic surgeons in New York City and Long Island. She has a very unique approach in the field of cosmetic surgical artistry, with a deep understanding of the human body as well as aesthetics. Dr. Danovich is on the cutting edge of her industry and specializes in Whole Body Rejuvenation. 25A magazine caught up with Dr. Danovich in her Great Neck office, to gain insight into how she is making a significant impact in the lives of her clients. 25A: Tell me about what you specialize in and why is it so important to your clients? Dr. Danovich: I specialize in Whole Body Rejuvenation. We need to emphasize that every single part of the body is important- the face, body, hands and sexual organs also. I always make time to talk with my patients, not only about the face, but I talk to them in
general. In 90 % of the time my patients will tell me about something else that is bothering them, for example they may not have any sexual drive; this applies to both men and women. I came up with this idea; we need to look at our patients as a whole. I get so much gratification when they tell me how I have changed their life. If you only rejuvenate your face it will not be in proportion to the rest of your body. After 55 years old, the best compliment a woman can accept is being called “sexy” over “beautiful.” If you talk to a 20 year old woman they will always prefer “beautiful.” After 45 years old, we start to care more about quality. 25A: What kind of people are coming to you for consultation and services? Dr. Danovich: The youngest female clients I have are 35 years old. The 20 year olds are more interested in breast and butt augmentation,

After 35 years old, my clients are looking to prevent the aging process with procedures such as botox that will fill in light wrinkles and/or plump lips. I also truly believe in customizing services and procedures to any age group above 45 years old- I will sit down with my clients and figure out what will be the most beneficial work for the particular age group. 25A: When did you know that you wanted to become a doctor? Dr.Danovich: I am the 6th generation of surgeons. My father was a reconstructive plastic surgeon. From studying all those years in medical school, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. I was always interested in cardiac surgery. I paid attention to scars, how to dress wounds: the finer details. I gained a true perspective on the aesthetics of the procedures. 25A: How do you set yourself apart from every other cosmetic surgeon? Dr. Danovich: I deal in organic renovation. I don’t think that many other surgeons take the approach that I do. I use platelet rich plasma, which is derived from your own blood. The growth factors contain natural multipotent stem cells which

activate the production of new collagen, fatty tissue and blood vessels to rejuvenate your skin, making it the solution for a non-surgical facelift. It can also be injected into the vaginawhat we call the ‘O shots’- a very specific method of using blood-derived growth factors that stimulate stem cells to grow healthier vaginal tissue. There is a very high demand for this as you can imagine.
I dedicate one hour for consultation so I can understand what they are looking for. There is a lot of psychology involved; a lot of work and time. I believe in building long time quality relationships.
25A: Tell me about the golden ratio and how does your work reflect this principle? Dr.Danovich: I believe that everything should be balanced. If you look at your face, both sides are never the same; the same goes for our body. The beauty is in our asymmetry. My goal is to restore what you already have and I will never intrude on your natural beauty. You have to have a sense of beauty and taste. Every perception of beauty is different. As a female surgeon, I listen to my clients.
Dr. Danovich: This procedure is used to improve the quality of skin and to stimulate the production of collagen. Through the optimization process it essentially prevents aging and produces a much better quality of skin. The Vampire Facelift is the organic

version of the conventional facelift, because it utilizes the nutrients of your own platelet rich plasma derived from your very own blood. Botox can only target certain areas and it is not a long term solution. This procedure provides longevity and one can see improvement right away and over time.
25A: Where do you see the trends of cosmetic surgery going? Dr. Danovich: I see the trends leaning towards more precise and quick procedures. It is also about taking preventative measures. There will be more use of laser machines which will ultimately prevent us from facelifts or surgery. With the hectic lifestyles that we lead, quick recovery and calculated results are fundamental. Again, my concept is all about organic whole body\ rejuvenationI am on the cutting edge of my

CALLING ALL MEN
GYNECOMASTIA Male vanity is as equally important as a woman’s and nobody knows that better than Dr. Danovich, the leading cosmetic surgeon in New York City and Long Island for male plastic surgery. While cosmetic procedures like fat transfer, Botox and Sculptra injections and liposuction may be the most common procedures performed on men, Gynecomastia, the condition of enlarged breasts in men is a medical condition that Dr. Danovich easily corrects. WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA? For some men, the condition is genetic. For others, certain medications or drug use may be the cause. Either way, there is no diet or exercise to correct the appearance of what may look like female breasts on a man. Therefore, surgery is the best option. THE EXPERIENCE During the procedure which lasts 90 minutes, Dr. Danovich makes a small incision under your arm or on the edge of the areola. Excess glandular tissue and skin is removed and, if necessary, liposuction in the area will be performed to remove excess fat. Your chest will be tightened and contoured with careful attention to natural, masculine results. RECOVERY Just after the procedure, you will wear a tight male vest for compression; this is easily hidden under normal clothing. You will be able to return to work within two-three days, but you should avoid strenuous activity for seven-ten days. Soreness and tightness will gradually decrease as will the appearance of your scars. In most cases, scars will heal very well and be barely visible. 25A Supplementation Decoded By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD
I
t should come as no surprise that vitamins and minerals are essential to any diet. Research highlights their role in the prevention of cancer, blood pressure and heart disease, as well as other health issues. What is not as clear in these studies is whether we can obtain these nutrients from food alone or if nutritional supplementation is necessary.
Do I need to be taking vitamin and mineral supplements? The short answer is that most of us don’t need dietary supplements at all. A daily multivitamin may even be unnecessary. If you are able to maintain a healthy and balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein sources, the chances are high that you are getting adequate nutrients. Before relying on a magic pill, you should aim for naturally maintaining a well-rounded diet. Ultimately, ingesting a synthetic vitamin is not the same as nurturing your body with nutritious foods. A single piece of fruit or vegetable contains a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which an over-thecounter supplement does not identically mimic. For example, look at an orange versus a vitamin C pill. The orange will supply antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, among a host of other nutrients. If you opt for the pill, you're missing out on the other benefits that the whole fruit naturally offers. While the pill undoubtedly offers a concentrated dose of a given vitamin or mineral which a single food usually doesn’t provide, your body likely doesn’t need the mega dose at all.
So, who does need to take a supplement? Still, there are some individuals that would benefit greatly from
46 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
taking specific daily supplements. This would include those who are at risk of becoming deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral, namely individuals that are on a restrictive diet, are vegan or vegetarian, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are above than the age of 50. Individuals with restrictive diets, like vegans and vegetarians, tend to be at risk for B12 deficiency since a majority of vitamin B12 sources come from animal-based proteins. Therefore, they would likely benefit from B12 supplementation. Similarly, folic acid needs are elevated during pregnancy so pregnant women often benefit from folic acid supplements.
Can’t I just supplement to ensure I am getting what I need? Taking too much of anything can have detrimental effects, and supplements are no different. Certain vitamins can actually be dangerous when taken in excess. Small amounts of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K) are needed to maintain good health. However, mega-doses of these vitamins can be toxic and lead to health problems. Similarly, because the body does not need these vitamins every day, when ingested in larger amounts, the body stores them in the liver and adipose (fat) tissue when they are not being used. On another note, it is important to recognize that there are not as many regulatory requirements imposed on nutritional supplements as there are on pharmaceutical drugs. The Federal Drug Administration does not oversee the legitimacy of nutritional supplement labels. Companies therefore may make claims that are not 100% true, as there are few legal implications. While this doesn’t mean that all supplement labels are “false,” they are certainly misleading.
Eat the Real Thing

So what should I do?
Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD is a registered dietitian and the founder of Nutrition by Bru, a
Supplements are designed to supplement or enhance the diet. Popping dietary supplements is not the answer to automatic good health. While supplements can be helpful to fill nutritional gaps that may be present, it is important to understand that it is not beneficial to take a supplement without any health or dietary indication. If you are at risk for a nutrient deficiency, talk to your physician and dietitian about developing a nutritional regimen that is both safe and effective for you. In the meantime, choose a diet rich in foods that naturally contain vitamins and minerals.

25A As Hamptons Offerings Expand So Has Lee Skolnick’s Vision By C.C. Sullivan Photos Courtesy of Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership
O
ver the past 25 years, the East End has become more than a seasonal destination. With time and careful growth it has evolved into a kind of urbane oasis, with many of the attributes of a major metropolitan area including cultural attractions, topnotch libraries, and world-class art museums like the Parrish. And as in the best cities, design has a strong role in supporting a growing cultural mix while preserving the area’s unique character, scale, and historical heritage — in other words, the experience of desirable authenticity, says Lee H. Skolnick, a renowned architect and longtime resident of Sag Harbor.
On top of these Hamptons successes, Skolnick’s increasingly global work keeps him traveling frequently: a science center in Bulgaria, a corporate retreat in Ohio, a school in Wyoming and museums from Miami to Louisville to Manhattan.
One major addition last year was the new East Hampton Library expansion, with its Children’s Reading Room, a couple of lighthouses, and a windmill — all indoors.
In the process, the Manhattan-based firm has established a global reputation as one of the country’s premier designers of educational and cultural facilities. His Children’s Discovery Center at the Queens Library is the second-largest children’s library in the country and has been described as “a treasure for New York City.” Even closer to home, Skolnick’s Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton has been called “the best family fun on Long Island” and won design honors from the prestigious Society for Experiential Graphic Design.
The playful, referential interiors designed by Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership recall the splash of his magnetic Children’s Museum of the East End. Yet this new library for youngsters has become a tourist attraction in its own right, built within an expansion in the style of the original building by the firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
In these projects, as with the East Hampton Library, Skolnick says, “We always try to capture some of the feeling that makes the East End so magical, and translate it into a space that keeps that experience, that can be used every day by people who are here for the summer or year ’round.”
“It’s as if the library stands for what the Hamptons are all about,” says Skolnick. “It’s a mix of historical legacy, modern technology, and cutting-edge concepts in family appeal.” And it’s no surprise: Skolnick has spent the better part of his career crafting spaces for local artists and designers including Susan Rothenberg, Eric Fischl and April Gornik, Jim and Kate McMullan — all in Sag Harbor — as well as Toni Ross’s home and studio in Wainscott. Skolnick also designed the Bridgehampton home for Suzie Slesin and Michael Steinberg, as well as a recently completed and much-acclaimed private home in Sagaponack.
The same deep understanding of the distinctive qualities of the East End give Skolnick’s residential work such appeal and resonance among artists, cultural leaders and others who’ve worked with the architect. These alluring homes — as well as additions and renovations — seem to capture the timelessness and authenticity of the Hamptons while also bringing internationally renowned modernism to our towns. Much like the Hamptons themselves, Skolnick and his work demonstrate that there’s more to Long Island than just the beach.

25A Spring Time Renovation?
I
Is It time For Your
By Jody Sokol t’s been a very long winter and I for one am so happy that summer’s around falling to step over the tub. The biggest splurge was the shower doors. I’ve the corner. There is nothing like warm weather to motivate people to used them in several projects and thought they were so beautiful. The old jump start their home projects. This bathroom which appeared in BH&G medicine cabinets were replaced with larger, sleeker versions and modern Kitchens+Baths was a great Spring project. It’s also my bathroom. When light fixtures completed the look. Now my son’s back in his own bathroom I did this bathroom so many years ago, I was 8 months pregnant, probably and that makes me a very happy mom. not the best time to start a project. I had just been to a Monet exhibit and was so inspired by it, decided that my bathroom needed to be papered in What I‘m finding at the moment is that many of my clients have been in Monet’s Water Lilies. Needless to say, it was very blue. And while I really their home for a good amount of time and while their homes are finished, loved it back then, it wasn’t really suitable for a teenage boy. Besides, it there may still be that one neglected room that’s not and at this point they was beginning to peel and show signs of wear and tear. My son hated the want their homes to look good and be done. Such was the case for long wallpaper and who could blame him but he also hated his shower. It was time client, Jill Berger of Signature Premier Properties. She wanted to finish the original shower/ bath that came with the house. And every morning at the last remaining room in her house which was her living room. Her kids 6:00 am, he would wake me to use my shower which drove me crazy. When were grown and out of the house and she wanted to complete the room I could no longer stand it, I decided it was time to say good bye Water Lilies without going crazy on a room she barely used. The only things she had and hello subway tiles. I took down the wallpaper and gutted the tub/shower when we started was the sofa and three chairs. The window treatment combo. I selected white subway tiles for a clean and timeless look. I still became the focal point of the room. We selected a faux linen in creams, loved the original floor which proves that good design elements can stand blues and greens which looks gorgeous and makes the room come alive. the test of time and while I wasn’t crazy about the double vanity, I thought We added the rug, cocktail table, side table and accessories and viola’ she it was good enough to keep. n the opening pages of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale about the Gold Coast when it glittered, he describes Daisy's house as: "An elaborate white colonial mansion overlooking the Sound, where the emerald green lawn ran from the beach to the front door for over a quarter of a mile." Fitzgerald portrayed the massive waterfront property in Sands Point to represent an old guard family lorded over by the pompous, polo playing, Tom Buchanan. In reality, the property was part of the nouveau riche set who flocked to Long Island to sail on their yachts, drink champagne, and gallop about on horses chasing the helpless foxes into extinction. 56 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
Lands End, designed by Stanford White around 1900, had a colorful history. The Fitzgerald's, who lived in their own mansion in nearby Great Neck, were frequent guests of the owner, Herbert Bayard Swope, who owned the New York World newspapers. He was one of the first newspapermen to receive the coveted Pulitzer Prize for journalism. Swope, like so many of his rich neighbors loved to party on a grand scale. Mrs. Margaret Swope, who shared her husband’s passion for splendid social gatherings, once described their home as, "An absolutely seething bordello of interesting people." A vast pillard veranda that overlooked the Sound provided a stage for Broadway, film, and movie moguls like: Darryl Zanuck, Dorothy Parker, Humphrey Bogart, Groucho Marx, w.c. Field's and Charlie Chaplin, to

name a few. Film icon, Ethel Barrymore, a heavy drinker, set the house on fire one night after collapsing on a bed with a lit cigarette. It took all night for fire fighters to subdue the flames. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. At yet another event Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Mary Lee Hartford got locked in an upstairs bedroom during a weekend party and fell head over heels in love. They were both married to other people. Fairbanks Sr. began acting at the age of thirteen. His career took off when he married Hollywood’s golden girl, Joan Crawford. Fairbanks made over a hundred films playing opposite such legends as, Greta Garbo and Ginger Rodgers. Many years later Fairbanks returned to Lands End to appear in a TV commercial for Chrysler cars. Still distinguished looking, and drop dead handsome in his eighties, he could sell anything, just standing on the set in his custom made tux. In his later years, he wrote feature articles for Esquire and Vanity Fair Magazine. He wrote until he was ninety, and there is no doubt in my mind
that had he lived he would have hopped at the chance to write a feature story for 25A Magazine. Oh, the stories he could tell. Lands End was the place to be during the roaring twenties, where Rudy VallĂŠe sung while George Gershwin played his original show tunes on the piano. There were all night poker games in the library, where Winston Churchill played with Supreme Court justices and professional gamblers and racketeers, like Arnold Rothstein. Croquet was played on the eighteen acres of lawn, and often went on into the night where guests used the headlights from their cars to illuminate the colorful wooden balls. There were also elegant teas held in the formal gardens. At night colorful paper lanterns were festooned around the spacious rear porch that overlooked the Sound. Many guests arrived on their yachts that were also strung with colorful lights that shimmered on the rippling waves. At one time there was a long wooden dock with a green light at the end. The famous green light allowed sailors to know when it was high tide and safe to come close to shore. June 2015 | 57

In the distance, the real Gatsby mansion rose up from the waters edge. It’s name was Beacon Towers, and was built as a Feudal style, Medieval fortress in 1914, by the formidable, Alva Vanderbilt. Alva was obsessed with Joan of Arc, and filled the tomb like halls with life sized statues of the doomed saint and covered the walls with forty foot murals of the brave French warrior charging off to battle with her army. William Randolph Hearst later bought the gloomy castle for his mistress Marian Davies, but the fifty-room fortress was eventually abandoned and bulldozed during the Second World War. The Duke & Dutchess Other notable guests at Lands End, were The Duke and Dutchess of Windsor, who were invited to a dinner party one night and decided to stay awhile, as was their custom. The celebrated lovebirds were known as flagrant freeloaders, and were known to stay at various North Shore abodes for months on end. It was considered prestigious to have the former King Of England as a guest in ones home. Back in the seventies, when I ran around photographing the old manor homes that had survived, it appeared that most of them had at least one silver framed photo of the fabled couple proudly displayed on a piano or entrance hall table. Those Long Island Lords of the manor who took in the exiled royals came away exhausted, but with a lifetime of entertaining stories to tell. Among them were the Duke’s shyness, and how he often locked himself in the closet during social gatherings, and Wallis Simpson’s gaggle of pugs, or was it yorkies? Doing indelicate things on the priceless oriental rugs. One homeowner told me that the royal couple would often request exotic foods at all hours of the day and night. In 1968, Lands End was bought by Irwin Kramer, and his TV producer wife, Terry Allen Kramer. They spent years restoring and modernizing the house, using bright colors in all the rooms. On the waters edge, they built one of the most lavish Grecian columned pool houses on the East Coast. The pool house overlooked a seventy-five foot pool, and was a palace in itself with floor to ceiling glass walls facing the Sound. There were several guest rooms, and a modern glass bar. Closets were filled with colorful bathing suits in all sizes for guests, and one room was used for storing whimsical

floating toys and rafts. Nearby a helicopter pad stood at the ready for guests who popped in for dinner. The Kramers continued the tradition of lavish parties and I was fortunate to attend several. As a movie and film scout, I got to work there often. In 1978, “The Greek Tycoon” was shot there, starring Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset. The film was based on the true story of Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy. Lands End was the perfect match to represent the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port. The TV series, On Mothers Orders, was shot at the estate during the 1980’s, even Madonna was photographed lounging by the pool for Vanity Fair, and Super Model, Kate Moss, who was known to snort funny things, fell into the pool on a Steven Meisel shot for Vogue Magazine. To the East of the property, there were formal English style gardens with clipped hedged groves and a marble sundial. To maintain the vast property there were many grounds-keepers who lived in charming care taker cottages. There were also stables, a tennis court and greenhouses to grow flowers for the house all year long. In the main house there was also a massive wine cellar, a gym and a large room for storing rotating art works. The Payson’s Sometime in the early 1980’s, Charles Payson, known for his outstanding racing stables was looking for a Long Island water front property that was not too far away from Belmont Race Track in Queens. His wife, Joan Whitney Payson, owned the New York Mets, and was forty-seven years old when she met and fell in love with Charles, who was twice her age. When they heard that Lands End was on the market, they drove out, took one look at the spectacular views of Long Island and bought the estate on the spot, without even a tour of the house. Charles Payson, who swam in the ocean every day, no matter what the weather, only got to enjoy his dream house for two summers before he passed away in 1984. Though the house was well maintained by a dedicated staff, Mrs. Payson spent less and less time there. I continued to book the property for film and TV shoots, but mostly we had the whole place to ourselves. June 2015 | 59
The Filming Of The Movie, "The Greek Tycoon" At Lands End In 1978
The End Of An Era It is unclear what happened after that time, but according to news reports Mrs. Payson realized she was spending only twenty days a year at the sprawling mansion, and decided to put the property on the market for fifty million dollars. She was determined not to let the estate fall into the hands of developers. Several years went by with no offers. She finally sold the property in 2004, and was led to believe that the new owner would live there with his family, even if it meant selling off some of the acreage in order to keep the place up. But it soon became apparent that with the taxes, heating costs, and maintenance it was costing nearly five thousand per day to live there. It came as a staggering blow when in 2011 TV crews arrived from all over the country to film the bulldozing of the Long Island Showplace. The estate had fallen into the hands of a developer despite efforts from local preservation groups to declare the house a landmark. On a dark and gloomy day in April, demolition began as two claw hooked excavators tore the fabled building to pieces, bit by bit. Finally the iron clawed monster reached up and pulled each of the four towering pillars down in 60 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
a cloud of dust, and then the whole third floor came crashing down. For a day or two, all that remained were the six massive chimneys. Lands End was the last of the historic properties described in Fitzgerald’s classic novel about a way of life that dazzled for only a decade, then vanished forever. In 1925, some misguided book reviewer was quoted as saying of Gatsby’s author: “ That he was just a big fake recklessly wasteful of his talent”. When I watched the news images of Lands End being demolished, I thought how recklessly wasteful we are in this country of our architectural treasures. I went into mourning and wore black for a week. 25A The Crosby Mansion Inspires an Historical Novel
O
By Victoria R. Crosby
n a trip to Cape Cod some years ago, while driving through Brewster, I came across a hidden treasure. Out of curiosity we drove down Crosby Lane off Rt 6A, across from Nickerson State Park, and discovered the Crosby Mansion. Knowing that it was not my ancestral home, but sharing the same name, and as a lover of history, I wanted to see more of it. The area was deserted but we walked around the property of this large and unusual house.
Driving further down Rt 6A we stopped at the Brewster General Store, and after talking to the locals, purchased a copy of a fictional novel by Brewster author Dorothy D. Leone, Where The Herring Run, (459 pages, iUniverse, Inc.) which is based on the life story of Albert Crosby who grew up in Brewster, made his fortune in Chicago, and returned to Brewster in 1888, to build this opulent mansion for his second wife, wrapped around his modest childhood family home. On a later visit after reading the novel, and even more curious about the house, I was able to visit on a day when the local volunteer group, who call themselves Friends of the Crosby Mansion, were working on the restoration process. Ginny Locke is one of the founding members of the volunteer group and it was her son Brian Locke who in 1991 had the vision to save the empty and decaying mansion, which was about to be demolished. The mansion, which Albert Crosby had named Tawasentha, was in disrepair after years of neglect, and had been acquired along with surrounding beachfront property, in 1985 by the state of Massachusetts as an adjunct to Nickerson State Park. After lobbying by the Friends of Crosby Mansion, officially formed in 1992, the town of Brewster obtained a long term lease that enables the group to use proceeds from beach cottage rentals to pay for restoration. Fundraising events and open houses also help raise funds. The first two floors of the mansion were completely renovated, when I first
62 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
visited, and now work is complete on the third floor. Much of the period furniture and accessories have been donated. It is a house within a house, and as you step from one to the other, you are stepping into another period, which is reflected in the furnishings and decor. The novel includes the factual history of Albert Crosby’s life, although much of the story is fictionalized, it is a wonderfully colorful saga. The descriptions of his early life in Cape Cod, then Crosby’s quest for financial independence, his successful brewery, his love of the Chicago Opera House, which he acquired from his cousin, and the disastrous Chicago Fire in 1871. It’s a fascinating, page turning story which deserves more attention, and has all the ingredients of a television mini-series or a movie. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the book are donated to the Friends of Crosby Mansion This is the author’s first novel, a life-long ambition inspired by her fascination with the Crosby Mansion. I was fortunate enough to meet Dorothy Leone on one of my trips to the Mansion, and she kindly autographed my copy of her book. We have remained friends and visit her whenever I am on the Cape. The two cottages on the property, with lovely views of the beach and ocean, have been renovated by the volunteers, and are rented in the summer months, which brings in revenue for more work on the mansion. Much more works has been done since my first visit several years ago. Public bathrooms have been added and there is now a gift shop. I greatly admire the devotion of the volunteers to restoring and maintaining this unique and historic mansion, and strongly recommend a visit. The Crosby Mansion is open to the public by appointment and on special days in the summer and around Christmas time. It has also been made available for weddings. Friends of the Crosby Mansion may be reached at their website crosbymansion.org or call Brian Locke Properties Manager at 508-896-1744 or email crosby1888@aol.com.

Actress Blanca Blanco 68 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
B
B lanca Blanco is living proof that hard work and determination will get you EVERYWHERE. Born in Watsonville, California to immigrant parents, and YES, this is her birth name. Blanca was instilled with a strong work ethic at a very early age. Her dream for as long as she can remember, was to become an actress. But before she achieved her goal, and broke into the field of acting, there was a girl with perseverance, who overcame many obstacles. During our conversation, Blanca reflected on her early years, being one of five children, and having parents that worked multiple jobs to support the family, but still growing up poor. She believes that everyone is a product of their environment, but anyone can overcome difficulties. The actress feels these hard times are what shaped her into who she is today. When Blanca was nine years old, her family moved from California to Chelan Washington. Here, she took acting classes, and singing lessons, all while maintaining her schoolwork. Somehow this purposeful young lady
Some People Dream of Success… Others Wake Up and Work Hard for it By Bobbie Catala
also managed to find the time to organize local theatrical performances. She also, along with her two brothers and two sisters, would reenact scenes from popular films for the amusement of her family. Blanca, in addition to wanting to be an actress, was steadfast in the importance of an education. She proudly told me she was the first Latino from her hometown to go to college. Blanca immediately attended Spoken Falls Community College after high school, where she earned an Associate of Science degree. From there, she received an impressive $80,000.00 in scholarships and transferred to Washington State University, going on to attain a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s degree in social work from Eastern Washington University. While in college Blanca worked as a therapist for government organizations, as well as for a rehabilitation center, in her hometown, for individuals newly released from prison. She also worked teaching Spanish. Blanca shared her experience of working at a hospice also, stating she was very “uncomfortable” yet found it extremely rewarding.

Art by Blanca Blanco John Savage and Blanca Blanco This complex and determined young woman certainly is multi-faceted. She has transformed herself throughout her life. Blanca, until her mid 20’s was a tomboy, and considered herself a bit of a nerd. She didn’t wear any makeup, and disliked getting dressed up. She now indulges in Sue Wong, Versace, and Adriana Propel. The actress can rock the red carpet and cause a stir with her daring sense of fashion. She was named one of the top dressed at the Oscars by OK Magazine. Ms. Blanco reminisced about her debut walking the red carpet. She said she felt uncomfortable… until she arrived… then she immediately felt at home. At home in Malibu, Blanca enjoys her serene environment, and unwinds wearing beach clothes. Out of the celebrity scene, its t-shirt, beach pants, no makeup, all natural. She enjoys running, hiking, and spending time outdoors. This multi-talented actress is also an artist, making abstract style her genre. Her paintings are now being displayed at various art shows in California. When she’s relaxing you might catch her watching a movie starring one of her favorites… George Clooney. Blanca admires the
style of Clooney and actor Vincent D’Onofrio, calling their style “organic”. The actress revealed that the one movie she can watch anytime is “The Notebook”, saying this beautiful story never gets old. Blanca Blanco does not take her success for granted and will not forget where she came from. This actress of Mexican-American descent remembers growing up poor, and was not going to allow her environment to determine who she was going to be, moving forward. This woman enjoys helping people and giving back to the community. She works with Lupus L.A., a hospice, and Casa L.A., that helps foster children. She experienced the benefits of charity first hand, having grown up in poverty. Additionally, Blanca works with Autism Speaks, AIDS society, Breast Cancer Alliance, and the American Cancer Society. Ms. Blanco is an expert in End of Life issues, becoming a leader in educating the issues of Death and Dying. Bianca is steadfast in her commitment to being all she can be, and is certainly doing the job very well!

une is the kickoff month for the North Shore and Hamptons as we all know. These areas are notorious and synonymous with the best parties and it’s always a pleasure to indulge my creative muse in coming up with an innovative way of presenting delectable food. The world of catering and event planning evolves with the time and its clients. I keep my finger on the pulse of what truly enhances every event and its décor while satiating the palate. The Hors D’oeuvres concept was coined by the French and literally translates to “outside the main”. This concept has been turned inside out as of the late 20th century and continues to blaze the trail of fine food centered events. Transforming the hors d’oeuvres to a visual feast is my forte. When planning your menu, presentation is paramount and as a result one cocktail party can stand out far more than another. Presentation sets your party apart; it is as important as the quality of the fare. Never skimp on presentation.

NEW YORK CITY'S MIDTOWN WEST
NATIVE OF CUBA
A.G KITCHEN BEST OF THE LATIN CLASSICS
By Elizabeth Darwen A. G. Kitchen is the perfect spot to experience some Latin flavor in New York’s Midtown West. A native of Cuba, Chef Alex Garcia learned to appreciate the simplicity of ingredients and wanted to bring his interpretation of Latin cuisine to New York City. Located on 72nd Street and Columbus, the space carefully separated into distinctive sections. Grab a cocktail with a friend at the bar, fill up a booth with friends, or eat a romantic dinner for two. As you enter, you are enveloped by a welcoming vibe. Colorful walls, industrial antique ceiling fans, dining areas split by shelves boasting colored glass and other curios, warm tunes coming from the speakers, all brings a kind Cuban tone to the dining experience.
pointed. If you are looking for more zest, make sure to ask for the spicy version. The fresh taste of the guacamole will get you hungry for more, so perhaps it would be good to also order the seafood ceviche. Prepared to the finest pinnacle of quality, this will stave off the hunger pangs momentarily while your entrée is being prepared.
Start off with one of their carefully selected cocktails, and you will be in for a genuine treat. Very well balanced, neither too sweet nor too sharp in taste and aroma, you’ll see and taste what a good cocktail should taste like. To get the full Latin experience why not start off with something simple like the Cuban sidecar. This classic recipe is simple, yet delicious, consisting of rum, triple sec, and lime mixed together in perfect proportions. Sticking to the same motif, try the AG 1940 Sparkling Mojito, where the triple sec is replaced with cava, and mint is added for a refreshing tang.
The dinner is not a hard choice to make as you can basically choose anything from the great menu and you will be satisfied. The entrees consist of Burgers, Brazilian style Roasted Chicken, Surf and Turf combinations, as well as a selection of Latino classics. Try what A.G. Kitchen calls the NYC’s Best Cubano and judge for yourself. Served with a side of French fries, it is a great deal consisting of roast pork, black forest ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on baked pull apart potato bread in the style of a Medianoche sandwich. If you want to go for something more special, try a Garcia’s Seafood “Paella” or a Cuban Classic For Two. One thing for sure is that you cannot go wrong with one of their burgers, and there is a wide variety to choose from. When you are done enjoying your main course, try their milkshake, an apple pie a la mode or a hot chocolate brownie (but take a minute to rest while it cools, it is served HOT).
While trying to decide which among the many entrée options you want to try, order the freshly made AG Guacamole Trio, and you will not be disap-

TAKE MORE THAN A PINCH THIS SUMMER WITH HAMPTONS SALT COMPANY By Elizabeth Darwen
S
alt is an essential nutrient, flavoring ingredient for cooking world-wide and yet has a much maligned reputation. Due largely to the industrial preparation of salt using chemical compounds, it has become a target for doctors concerned with the use of processed salt in industrialized food production. All this causes us to forget just how wonderful naturally raw, infused or smoked salts can be to enhance and subtly change the flavor of our favorite summer dishes. Peter Pierce of Hamptons Salt Company is on a mission to change our minds and educate our taste buds as to just how good naturally produced flavored salt can be. The Raw salt range consists of a diverse array of naturally produced salts including Hawaiian, Atlantic, Himalayan, French Fleur de Sel to our classic Cooking Salt. Infused salts offer the possibility of enhancing a dish with a subtle flavoring from a range encompassing distinctive Black Truffle, to fiery Ghost Pepper to subtle Lemon and even Espresso for the coffee lover. Smoked salts offer connoisseurs a unique set of aromas – try the exquisite Smoked Mesquite for example. Not sure where to start ? Glen Cove Village Square DOWNTOWN SOUNDS 2015: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC
W
By Fred DiMenna
hen Bruce Springsteen sang, “From small things, Momma, big things one day come,” he may have been referring to Downtown Sounds, the annual free concert series in Glen Cove Village Square. Downtown Sounds 2015 will kick off its 19th season on Friday, July 3rd. When the Glen Cove Business Improvement District originated the series in 1997, then known as Jazz in the Square, the plan was to attract people and art to the downtown. It all began with local musicians entertaining modest crowds that would gather in the courtyard at the intersection of Glen and School Streets. Now, with the help of corporate sponsors, including Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Old Westbury Web Radio, OWWR, it has become standard practice to close busy streets to traffic to accommodate overflow crowds who flock to see headline acts like Long Island’s own Richie Cannata and Jimmy Webb. Downtown Sounds kicks off the season with a bang for the July 4th weekend! One would think that Sly Stone and Martha Reeves might have also been referring to Downtown Sounds when they sang “Hot Fun in the Summertime” and “Dancin’ in the Streets.” Indeed, for nine weeks every summer, Glen Cove comes alive with cool tunes that offset the rising temperature.
92 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
This year will be no exception when Swingtime Big Band takes the stage on July 3rd. Using a combination of reeds, brass and rhythm, this unique show features music that defined the American pre-rock era. Tribute bands are also well received with recent performances by “The Beatles” and “Beach Boys” immediately coming to mind. This year, the Glimmer Twins will perform the music of the Rolling Stones on July 10th, Los Cintron will pay tribute to The Gypsy Kings on July 17th and homage will be paid to The Jersey Boys on August 21st. What is more, reggae music will be front and center on August 7th; however, in this case, it will be the real deal as The Meditations will be featured. Formed in 1974, this authentic Jamaican band has sung back-up for Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff along with releasing several studio albums. Their resume also includes a 2014 performance at Downtown Sounds that was very much enjoyed by all of the “Rastafarians” in attendance. In addition to world-renowned artists like John Oates and Jimmy Webb, the list of musicians who have performed at Downtown Sounds reads like a who’s-who of the Long Island music scene. This includes Glen Cove’s own Marvin Floyd and his niece, Grammy winning pop star Ashanti. Floyd will be featured this year on July 24th. Three weeks later, legendary sax player Richie Cannata will once again electrify the Village Square stage. Also a

Bottom left: The Current Mayor Reggie Spinello, Francine Kohler, Executive Director of the Glen Cove Business Improvement District, Carol Hammond, Downtown Sounds Committee Member, and Members of Soul Sound Revue. Glen Cove resident, Cannata’s annual August performance usually draws the largest crowd and Richie delights his fellow Glen Covers by bringing special musical guests. In the past, these have included rising-star son Eren and former Yankee centerfielder and current jazz guitarist Bernie Williams, who drew the largest crowd to date. Hard-driving, powerful Certicroots band MacTalla Mor will headline this year on July 31st. To regular Downtown Sounds attendees, the act scheduled for the final show of 2015 will come as no surprise. It is only logical to close the season with the biggest party imaginable and the best way to do that is with the ultimate party crew, Soul Sound Review. For those keeping track, this highenergy Motown tribute band has performed six times at Downtown Sounds and after closing the past three seasons with knockout performances, they have staked their claim as the perennial final act.
Richie Cannata is known to say, “It’s all about the music,” and there is little doubt that Downtown Sounds brings that phrase to life. However, it is important to recognize that the Village Square would be silent on Friday nights in the summer if it were not for the contributions of many key players. “Business Improvement District Executive Director Francine Ferrante-Koehler and Executive Assistant Mary Jirsa are invaluable,” says Jeanine DiMenna, who is serving as the Downtown Sounds Chairperson once again this year. A special thanks to Mayor Reggie Spinello and the City of Glen Cove, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Garvies Point RXR, American Community Bank, North Shore LIJ Glen Cove Hospital and American Community Bank, Joseph Manfredi and the crew for SUNY Old Westbury Web Radio, Pat McLaughlin and his crew from PMB Audio, American Asphalt & Paving and all of the indefatigable volunteers that give effortlessly to make the concerts a great success!

he first time I went scuba diving was at a Caribbean resort when I signed up for an introductory dive class though PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. It was designed to give me a taste of what it’s like to breathe underwater with a tank on my back and aquatic life around me. I was instantly hooked. A whole other world opened up. It felt like I was on the moon, or another planet, an alien landscape with life forms I’d never seen before. I had to continue exploring it. Over the years, I kept going back to the Caribbean, diving at various island resorts or with local divers who showed me nearby sites. But the more I did it the more I realized that, being only at the noncertification level, I hadn’t even begun to scratch what was under the surface. I thought about earning my official certification, but the relaxed rules on some of those little islands let me get away with diving without it. 94 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Then in 2014, when I visited the Dutch-island of Curacao, I tried to make scuba arrangements at a dive shop. They turned me down. The rules in Curacao were so tight that without a certification card, I wouldn’t be allowed to take my underwater exploration further. It was a rude but positive awakening: it was time to get certified so that I would never be in that predicament ever again. As a bicoastal journalist, I chose to begin my PADI certification process on the West Coast with the renowned Malibu Divers. I began with the entry-level certification - the PADI Open Water Diver Course which would allow me to dive down to 60 feet. PADI hooked me up with E-classes (the book learning part), which I did on my own time at home. Then Malibu Divers helped me apply those lessons in a swimming pool over the course of a few classes. The final step was mastering those same skills in four separate “open water” dives. In my case, the plan was to complete them on the island that had rejected my advances a year earlier – Curacao.
Curacao is located in the southern reaches of the Caribbean Sea, just north of Venezuela. It is part of the Netherlands Kingdom’s ABC Islands (which also includes Aruba and Bonaire), and is only 38 miles long and three to seven miles wide. My open dives were booked through Caribbean Sea Sports at the Curacao Marriott Beach Resort & Emerald Casino, located on the East side of the island. The reef at the resort is just 20 ft from the shore, making it ideal for completing my necessary dives. I wasted no time getting set up at the dive shop. After all, I was on a mission. Like a spurned lover, I had not forgotten what it was like to be the lone person standing on the dock, watching a boat full of divers and their air tanks sailing off into the blue waters. Now, vindication was within reach. And yet, something unexpected happened. Even though I dove for years without certification and full of reckless abandon, I was all of a sudden very nervous. Since taking the PADI courses, I was knowledgeable not only about properly assembling and using my equipment, but about how to handle myself in worst-case emergency situations - things I never previously thought about and had foolishly made someone else’s responsibility. Now the responsibility rested squarely on my shoulders. I felt pressure to not let myself down. Luckily for me, Curacao is an ideal island at which to get scuba certified. The open water dives tend to be shore dives – dives where you walk in to the water from the beach. Knowing and seeing that the shore is within reach can sooth the nerves and is not as overwhelming and intimidating as being dropped in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight. For the next two days, I worked with a Dutch instructor named Dario to complete my four dives. We plowed through each itemized skill I needed to master on the PADI checklist. If I didn’t quite get it the first time, I simply redid it. Most of my time with Dario was spent underwater, communicating through hand signals, which is something I love about Scuba diving. It forces your brain to think differently because you’re not relying on your verbal skills. It demands that you be present and pay attention since you need to focus on the other person to understand what they’re saying. Best of all scuba hand signals are like a secret language you get to use with a select group of people in a club – a club that after two days doing my four dives, I was now officially a part of. YES! The moment I emerged from the crystal blue water after my fourth dive, Caribbean Sea Sports took my ID picture right on the spot and issued me a temporary certification card. In the photo, my hair was dripping wet and I looked exhausted, but inside I was deliriously happy. Mission accomplished, and the next day I’d be transferring to the west side of the island for my first post-graduate dive.
Meanwhile, I had some overdue sightseeing to do. For a small island there are plenty of things to experience in Curacao. I wandered through the downtown capital of Willemstad, where you can walk over the Queen Emma Bridge that rests on 16 floating pontoons. There’s also a farmer’s market that floats on boats that come in from Venezuela, and you can barter for fresh fruits and vegetables. Curacao is also home to the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, the oldest still in use in the Western hemisphere. Built in 1732, it still has sand on the ground in lieu of solid floors. For those who are bit more adventurous, the Sea Aquarium Curacao has an animal encounters program where, in an enclosed area, I snorkeled in a lagoon home to an array of fish, including a pair of friendly stingrays. Adjoining lagoons with nurse sharks and lemon sharks are connected by Plexiglas with fist-size holes to safely hand-feed them sardines while getting a face-to-face experience. But in the waters of Curacao, don’t expect these sharks to mill tamely about for any face-to-face encounters. It is not an island for big game viewing, as I found out when I checked in to the Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club on the west side of the island to explore underwater. Kura Hulanda consists of Dutch-style apartments, complete with kitchenettes and outdoor showers, all perched on a cliff that overlooks the beach that is home to the Alice in Wonderland reef. Alice in Wonderland is considered one of the top reefs to dive in Curacao. In the afternoon, the sun shines directly on it, creating visibility all up and down the reef where you can see a plethora of fish, including the blue tang, butterfly fish, damselfish, spotted moray eel, and crab. Best of all, you don’t even need to boat to get there. In fact, as the “house reef” of Kura Hulanda, non-divers and hotel guests can easily go down the watery rabbit hole of Alice in Wonderland with a simple snorkel swim. Like Alice in Wonderland, dive sites in Curacao have rich and healthy coral growth. The island’s famous scuba spot, Mushroom Forest - named after the way the corral is shaped - and the self-explanatory Black Coral Garden, are two of the best. What makes these locations so popular is that coral attracts a variety of reef fish, but there is a whole secondary layer of macro life to view as well. Therefore, diving in Curacao is about taking your time and observing the deep richness of marine life, not just the obvious. Sure you’ll see turtles or stingrays, but if you pay attention to your immediate surroundings, you’ll spot things like little sea slugs known as nudibranch. You’ll come away with an indelible memory and an extra sense of accomplishment. June 2015 | 95

Scuba Diving
I walked to the Go West Diving dive center on the property and boarded a boat that would take us to the Watamula reef. Once there, well into the Caribbean Sea, I stood at the edge of the boat looking down into the water. I was all geared up and ready to go, and I imagined I looked like the divers I so badly wanted to be with a year ago when I was left behind on the docks. My PADI e-learning classes, my Malibu Divers pool dives and my open water dives at the Caribbean Sea Sports culminated in this very moment. I was grateful that a year earlier I hadn’t been allowed to dive here without proper scuba credentials. I knew that one must earn the right to see the beauty below. When I took the plunge, everyone onboard erupted in cheers and claps for this now-official newbie. As I felt the water wash over my skin, any lurking anxiety disappeared. Underwater seemed like an alternate universe that I had accidentally stumbled into. It was a living aquarium: sweeping soft corals and giant sponges, triggerfish and parottfish, eels and even a turtle. Our guide pointed out various little critters that my untrained eyes would never have seen, hiding in the underwater nooks and crannies. I was amazed at how intricate – and busy – life was all around me. The experience was a perfect metaphor for our daily lives: slow down and notice the little stuff. The reward is more than we imagine.

Bask in the Bounty of Sandals Barbados By Lavanya Sunkara

cocktails, learning to surf, and discovering the island’s natural wonders and nightlife. Whenever I needed to cool off in the clear turquoise waters, I could rent a boogie or paddle board or glide away on a sailboat or kayak. Diving is complimentary for PADI certified and novice guests to explore the spectacular reefs and shipwrecks at the bottom of the Caribbean.
Whether you seek a romantic getaway or a beach wedding, a direct JetBlue flight from JFK Airport will deliver you to a paradise where you can sink your toes in the sugary soft sand, sipping a refreshing rum punch steps from your suite. With its all-inclusive lifestyle, I never had to bring my wallet. I spent four amazing days sunbathing, drinking unlimited premium
The hardest choice each day was where to eat. Sandals Barbados hosts 11 restaurants ranging from Japanese to Indian (the first from Sandals), which can customize dishes to your spice level. When I craved sweets, I indulged in delicious crepes and locally handcrafted rum raisin ice cream at Café de Paris. On my first night, I meandered into a courtyard serving a chocolate buffet, complete with a fondue fountain, martinis, truffles, and a bevy of mouthwatering desserts under the stars as a live band serenaded guests with enchanting tunes.
hen the taxi pulled into the breezy driveway of Sandals Barbados, I realized I was in for a treat — and I don’t just mean the tasty rum drink I was handed immediately upon arrival. With innovative swim-up rooms, beachfront suites serviced by butlers, soaking tubs on balconies, gourmet international cuisine, and a full service spa, this adults-only resort located on stunning Dover Beach in St. Lawrence Gap has reimagined an upscale oasis of pleasure and serenity.
Every room is ultra-modern, featuring electronic Do Not Disturb signs and central air conditioning that senses when you're in the room. Even better, the room comes equipped with a bar that’s far from mini, brimming with full bottles of top shelf rum, scotch, vodka, gin, and wine replenished as often as needed. With spacious accommodations, sprawling four-poster beds, and gorgeous views of the garden, Crystal Lagoon pool, or the beach, you’ll remain extremely comfortable throughout your stay. Waking up to the sound of waves lapping ashore and walking barefoot on an empty beach, listening to the gentle rustling of the swaying palms early mornings is a memory I will always cherish. While it may be tough to leave the relaxing resort, a trip to Barbados isn’t complete without experiencing its exotic marine life. Onboard a sailboat with Tiami Catamaran Cruises, I was whisked along the coast for an enchanting afternoon swimming with sea turtles and snorkeling on a coral reef teeming with colorful tropical fish. With the golden sun illuminating the subaqueous world, the transparent waters showcased the bounty of life underneath. Back on deck, the tropical drinks flowed as calypso music underscored a vista of deep blue and emerald Caribbean waters and white sandy beaches hugging the coast. The next day, a 4x4 jeep from Island Safari picked me up for an on-andoff-roading adventure to Barbados’ most iconic locations. The soft coral limestone of the Caribbean’s easternmost island defines a rolling landscape that ranges from a rugged coastline of the east to hilly central highlands to the pristine beaches on the west. Atop Cherry Tree Hill, approximately 850 feet above sea level, I was enthralled by the sweeping panorama of the Scotland District. The striking rock formations jutting from the water in Bathsheba provided a striking backdrop from which I couldn’t remove my gaze. This village is home to a small fishing community and surfers who travel from around the world to ride the famed Atlantic waves. The popular subterranean destination of Harrison’s Cave in St. Thomas Parish in the middle of the island offers a natural thrill ride on a tram past clear streams, towering stalactites and stalagmites, and deep emerald pools sculpted by waterfalls. If exploring caves isn’t your thing, there are plenty of escapades from zip-lining through the jungle to hiking in the woodlands and spotting green monkeys in St. John, St. Joseph, St. Andrew and St. Thomas.
Following an exhilarating island tour, I headed to the famous Oistins Fish Fry in Bay Gardens for a true taste of Barbados culture. This is the place to be on a Friday night. Stretching for over a mile, locals and tourists flock to this outdoor seaside street fair for island crafts and delectable, homemade fried or grilled flying fish, red snapper, mahi-mahi or kingfish. The buttery macaroni pie provides an ideal side dish. Food is wrapped in aluminum foil and served in Styrofoam containers. The plastic forks are flimsy, but the fish is so flaky you won’t even notice. Beer and rum are aplenty as a lively soundtrack of Bob Marley, The Platters, Jimmy Cliff, current popular artists, and the cheers of fellow partiers permeates the night sky. I heard the celebration rages on until 6 in the morning, but after a long day of activities, I needed to get back to the resort. I felt at home at Sandals Barbados, where the cheerful wait staff greeted me with smiles and drinks. Slipping into the soaking tub on my balcony under the moonlight, I couldn’t help but wonder how soon I could return to this glorious getaway. Rooms start from $370 per person. Drop the burden from your shoulders release the ache from your heart, let you problems dissolve and anxieties depart. As you relax in the arms of waters crystal clear feel all your worldly hardships disappear. Drop the burden from your shoulders release the ache from your heart let your problems dissolve and anxieties depart. As the warmth of the sun melts the ice in your soul feel the healing power of your own mind control. Drop the burden from your shoulders release the ache from your heart let your problems dissolve and anxieties depart. Edward T. Callaghan Noted arts and entertainment publicist, Edward T. Callaghan, of Manhattan and Southampton, died at the age of 66 at home of complications of cancer on April 25th, 2015 By Joyce Brooks
E
d Callaghan, as he was generally known to press, clients and colleagues, had been a virtual fixture on the New York arts and Photos by Annie Watts entertainment scene – with a heavy emphasis on music and theatre – since the late-1970s. He began as publicity and marketing director of the now-defunct Entermedia Theater and continued to the present: first with his company Burnham-Callaghan Associates throughout the 1980s, in partnership with Jacqueline Burnham-Kurta; then several solo enterprises; and, for the past 15 years, with his life and business partner, John Wegorzewski, in Alchimia Public Relations & Marketing. It was primarily through this final entity that Callaghan also ventured into the areas of hospitality, fashion, fine art, and high-end luxury items.
Rochelle, NY. His first career was in education. For several years in the early 1970s, he taught at Our Lady of Victory, a K-8 Catholic elementary school in the South Bronx, serving as a teacher-of-all-subjects to 7th and 8th graders. He later was the co-founder of The CORE Community School (with the inimitable civil rights head of the Congress of Racial Equality, Roy Innis). The teacher-turned-promoter often said that teaching taught him how to communicate with “uninterested audiences” and motivate them to investigate, then embrace, information and ideas they hadn’t previously considered. While this lesson helpfully informed his later P.R. work, Callaghan’s impact on his students was profound and lasting. Just last summer, a group of his “kids” (now most in their 50s) organized a barbecue party in honor of their mentor.
Throughout his career, Callaghan personified the ultimate in show biz style and substance. His reputation for providing excellent, detailed materials to press and media, and, savvy positioning and direction to clients, was legendary. He represented hundreds of celebrities over the years, including Patti LaBelle, Rosie O’Donnell, and Loretta Devine. But he was best known for his impact on the New York club scene in the disco-driven 80s, representing The Limelight, The China Club, The Tunnel, and The Red Parrot, as well as the comedy club Catch a Rising Star. In addition, Callaghan’s expertise launched the Kaufman-Astoria Studios (one of the first to reinvigorate film and TV production in New York); created special event opportunities for Harry Winston Jewelers – particularly the company’s “dressing” of Academy Award contenders and presenters for several years; and brought (and kept) hundreds of Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regional, National and Touring theatrical productions on the boards. He most recently worked with numerous renowned fine artists, art galleries and art festivals. Edward Terrance Callaghan was born and raised in the Bronx, New York (November 30, 1948), later moved to New Jersey, then returned to Manhattan. He attended All Hallows in the Bronx for 12 years and completed his formal education with a BA in Liberal Arts from Iona College in New

smiles as she speaks, and her voice is melodic with a subtle hint of laughter in the undertone and it is immediately apparent that JoAnne is in love with making her art. JoAnne Von Zwehl has been commissioned by many prominent families, on Long Island and across the country, creating beautiful, timeless family portraits for the estate home. It’s often a portrait of the entire family, or perhaps a moment between a mother and child, a father and his son, or even a portrait of children at play. Working from a photograph, Joanne creates a beautiful rendition of life in paint.

rtist JoAnne Von Zwehl is happiest when she’s standing in the light. It’s a Wednesday afternoon in Brookville, New York, and JoAnne is locked away in her art studio on the second floor of her home, standing in a perfect sunray that’s beaming through the French doors overlooking the view of her lush green North Shore lawn. It’s that perfect time of day on Long Island, that time of day that illuminates us, and highlights the beauty we all possess. JoAnne captures that perfect light in everything and everyone she paints, and her subjects are always shown in their best moments, in their best light. “You see how the canvas illuminates here?” JoAnne asks with an enthusiastic sparkle in her blue eyes as she points to the area of the face on the canvas she’s currently creating. “This is the magic. This is the light.” JoAnne 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
In her work, JoAnne goes beyond the canvas. With each commission, she gets to know her subject prior to the paint. She spends time with her clients, listening intently, getting a feel for the lifestyle, combining what she learns with her own very strong creative vision. She may visit the client’s home and consider the space before she puts a brush in the paint. She makes recommendations and considers interior design factors. JoAnne wants her work to live perfectly in the home, as if the painting is an extension of the room. “Nothing is more rewarding than the reaction of the viewer,” says JoAnne in talking about her work, “I love seeing reactions. It warms my heart.” The path of an artist is often difficult and there is no guaranteed formula for success in the pursuit of creativity. Even though JoAnne knew early on that she had a tremendous desire to paint and create, her father, philanthropist Joseph Von Zwehl, insisted that she pursue an education in finance because he thought a degree in finance would guarantee a happy, prosperous life for his daughter. Prosperous, yes, but happy was a stretch as JoAnne struggled with her inner desire to make art.
In the midst of her financial success as a consultant in her own real estate business, JoAnne signed up for art classes as a way of decompressing from the stress of her fast paced, hectic career. She attended classes in Great Neck and the class was made up of mainly of children learning to paint. This did not deter JoAnne and she immediately began unfolding her talent for painting. Her teacher in Great Neck, Vivian Christopoulos, now 84, says that JoAnne quickly learned the skills and techniques required and more importantly, JoAnne had a strong burning desire to paint. Her work soon flourished and came alive. Today, JoAnne’s work lives not only on the canvas, but also in lithograph prints, on book and CD covers, and on prayer cards. One of her prints “Our Lady, Queen of America,” hangs in the office of Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano. Making art is not JoAnne’s only focus these days. A single mom with three children, JoAnne also runs a faith-based organization, M.A.N. Foundation, with her mother, Noreen Von Zwehl, providing water, food and supplies to third world
countries as well as building Catholic churches, religious schoolhouses and convents. She is also president of Rosa Mystica, a beautiful, spiritual 160-acre campus in Edmeston, New York, where retreats and conferences are held. JoAnne Von Zwehl has a strong faith and works diligently to bring light and happiness into this world. In everything she does, there is a smile and a prayer. She loves to laugh and have fun, and enjoys the Long Island lifestyle and nightlife with her circle of friends. JoAnne believes in finding balance in life. When life gets hectic and seems out of sync, JoAnne relies on her faith and her art. Her art studio is her happy place. In her studio, JoAnne can focus her creative energy and play in the colors that tell the story of that special moment in time she is capturing on the canvas. JoAnne is thrilled when it all comes together as she imagined it would. Just as when JoAnne imagined those years ago, that she could take that step into the unknown and become an artist. JoAnne Von Zwehl is happy standing in the light, and it is beautiful. June 2015 | 107

he McLaren 570S, Finally a car that can compete with the Porsche 911 Turbo S. The 570S which was revealed at the 2015 New York International AutoShow (insert page#) is the first in McLaren's new nomenclature called the "SportSeries" which Follows The existing "SuperSeries" nomenclature. The SportSeries will Consist of other new models in the future including a Spyder or Convertible a more practical model and a hardcore variant like the 675LT. As of now it is believed that all SportSeries models will have a base price near or below $200k Now when talking about sub $200k sports cars it is impossible to ignore the undisputed segment leader the Porsche 911 In particular the Turbo S. the first question people always ask when comparing sport cars is which is faster? Now that is a impossible question to answer until independent firms can drive both around a purpose built race track, but on paper the Porsche has 560hp a 0-60 of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 197 mph compared to the McLaren's 562 hp a 0-60 of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph so on paper the Porsche is quicker and the McLaren is faster over all. Now to the specifics! The 570S Utilizes some extraordinary technologies McLaren has learned from their Formula 1 racing team including A Carbon Fiber Monocoque Chassis which weighs just 80kg or about 176lb this helps contribute to a dry weight of just 2895lb. All 562hp is made using McLaren's M838TE midmounted V8 engine with twin turbochargers going to the rear wheels through a 7-speed SSG transmission returning a astonishing 25.5 miles per gallon. Other features include a TFT (Thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display) display cluster that can change to different configurations depending on the driver selected driving modes, McLaren's signature IRIS touchscreen on there also signature Floating center console, Bluetooth connectivity and SIRIUS satellite radio. The Brand new McLaren 570S is a true competitor to the tried and true leaders in it's segment and it is more exclusive then the rest of it's competition.

Joint event for IRI and QPRC raises nearly $150,000 to benefit programs and services for 2015

n April 16, 2015, Independence Residences, Inc. (IRI) and Queens Parent Resource Center (QPRC) held their 2015 Annual Spring Gala at Da Mikele Illagio in Elmhurst. Nearly 300 guests attended, helping to raise more than $150,000 to support IRI and QPRC. The agencies provide first-rate care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was a star-studded evening from start to finish. In recognition of TD Bank as IRI’s banking partner, Peter M. Meyer, president, TD Bank’s New York City market, was the guest of honor. Geraldo Rivera, journalist and talk show host, received the 2015 Champion Award for his groundbreaking expose and continued efforts to ensure equal rights and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Ellis Henican, political analyst on Fox News and Newsday columnist, served as emcee for the event. In his remarks, guest speaker Dr. Michael Baden, former NYC Medical Examiner and host of HBO’s Autopsy and member of the New York State Justice Center, underscored the mission of IRI and the theme for the evening: “Turning Dreams into Reality.” Highlights of the gala included a silent and live auction, a 50/50 raffle, and reception and dinner that drew many VIPs. Among them were two investigative journalists from Pix 11: Arnold Diaz, also formerly of Fox 5’s “Hall of Shame” news segment, and Mary Murphy; Randy Jurgensen, author of Circle of Six and an American film producer; and Chase Backer, publisher, 25A Magazine, rounded out the celebrity guest list. “It is with immense gratitude that we thank everyone who came out last week to support two great causes: IRI and QPRC,” said IRI Executive Director Raymond DeNatale. “The generous support of our donors makes a considerable difference in our ability to serve the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. Thanks to the proceeds from this very special event, the dedicated staff at IRI and QPRC will continue to make dreams come true for the individuals they serve. ”

The residential program focuses on small, individualized settings spanning a variety of support levels. Among its day service offerings is a site dedicated to supporting the needs of wheelchair users and those who require enhanced medical attention. True to its roots, QPRC maintains a parent support group, called the Parent Federation, which meets monthly to get updates from experts and discuss topics of their choosing. June 2015 | 117
