Publisher’s Note

March into March! The air is getting warmer and our pages are even hotter! What an exciting year so far as the magazine continues to grow and evolve, and this month is no different. There is a stir in the air and 25A is your vehicle to capture that movement. One of the areas where we see much growth is in our fashion pages and thus we present the spring fashion issue. My hope is you’ll use us as your guide for all of your fashion needs. On our cover this month we present the noteworthy New Yorker, Jean Shafiroff. We sat down with her to discuss what makes her tick, the launch of her new book and what makes her a successful philanthropist. This born and bread long islander loves the challenge that charitable giving offers and she inspires us with her mission to do good. I hope that you, my extraordinary readers, will notice the dozens and dozens of fashion pages and can admire the aesthetic improvement of the magazine. I’m proud of my team and know that we’re producing the most quality publication possible. As always, we showcase our favorite restaurants, travel destinations, spas and so much more. We know these pages will delight. Our intrepid contributor, Monica Randall, goes in depth in gold coast ruins. It’s a great read! We know that there are other publications in the NYC and Long Island markets, so we thank you for your loyalty - we hope you love the magazine as much as we love putting it together. We are blessed to have the best writers and readers in the world. Wishing you a great spring!

Elie Tahari Fall 2016 Goes past modern By W.A. Muller What's your inspiration this season? I’m calling it Past Modern – which is the mix of some elements from the past like Victorian high collars, velvets and lace used to create modern clean silhouettes that reference today’s woman and her lifestyle. In one look, I have a raw-edged tweed jacket over a Victorian lace tie-front blouse paired with a narrow suede track pant. How does NYC inspire you? New York City inspires me every day. It is the city of excitement and creativity and where all of my dreams have come true. Who is your woman? She is smart, sophisticated and understands fashion. She also loves to travel, enjoys living her life and wants to feel like a woman when she gets dressed. Most of all, she wants to feel sexy. How do you keep your looks (designs) fresh? I am constantly inspired from people around me in the office, on the streets of New York and other places I travel to. Whether it’s a particular color, architecture or art, it influences the designs in each collection. Where do you see the brand in 5 years? Any plans you'd like to discuss? We would like to grow our online presence. We’ve been focusing on our web creative and trying to inspire people to discover the world of Elie Tahari. We are also working to build out Elie Tahari lifestyle in our retail stores and will be presenting a new store concept later this year. Any words of advice for an upcoming designer? Take small bites! Start small, focus and grow a day at a time. Don’t try to do everything at once. elietahari.com

What Goes Around comes around Where Fashion Meets Luxury

S

By W.A. Muller

ince opening their world-famous boutique in 1993, What Goes Around Comes Around founders and Long Island natives Gerard Maione and Seth Weisser have become leading authorities of luxury vintage. They opened their Soho location in 1993 with the idea of presenting high-fashion, luxury vintage apparel and accessories, sensing this trend well before it caught on internationally. The company broadened its reach with a second location in Los Angeles in 2008 that will be relocating to Beverly Hills this spring. Knowing the Long Island region was an untapped market for luxury vintage, they recently opened two more stores--in East Hampton and Roslyn. “It was the right time to bring our concept home and both locations have been an instant hit,” said Maione. What Goes Around Comes Around’s buyers have been traveling the globe for the past 20 years, hand-selecting the most coveted brands and pieces. What Goes Around Comes Around houses one of the largest collections of vintage Chanel, and comprehensive collections of Hermès and Louis Vuitton. The brand’s highly curated assortment of vintage items includes pieces from the1800s through the 2000s for both men and women. Their stores have also gained international acclaim for their collections of vintage Levi’s, rock tees, militaria and Americana. Many items are one-of-a-kind and investment-worthy. What Goes Around Comes Around has always known the importance of Chanel, a must-have brand for any fashion enthusiast. “The classic flap bag is truly a timeless luxury essential for the fashionista’s closet,” says Weisser. Influencers from Rihanna to Rachel Zoe wear Chanel as an integral part of their wardrobe. They often look for rare collectible pieces and delve into the vast What Goes Around Comes Around collection. Celebrity fans and influencers populate the fashion pages worldwide wearing their finds and differentiating them from the rest of the pack. What Goes Around Comes Around is a haven for luxury collectors and continues to keep a finger on the pulse of all high-fashion trends. With their celebrity following and world-renowned taste in vintage luxury, you can rely on their expertly curated collections to find something unique. Jean Shafiroff On Successful Philanthropy By June Eding | Photos by Michael Paniccia

P

hilanthropist and humanitarian Jean Shafiroff is a woman of action with a boundless passion for giving. Nearly every day of the year, Jean is working in some capacity—as a volunteer fundraiser, board member, chair or co-chair of a gala, among other roles—for numerous organizations across New York City, the Hamptons, and outside the United States. For Jean, commitment to giving means that being idle is not an option. As she puts it, “I believe we all have an obligation to help those in need. I can’t stand idly by.” Jean’s work on behalf of the causes she believes in is more than a full-time job: it is her passion. If something needs to be done for a cause Jean believes in, Jean won’t

hesitate. Recently, Jean even traveled to Costa Rica, a trip she took for the second time to meet with and support different animal rescue groups, bringing back a total of five dogs as gesture of good will—all before returning to New York City and attending Fashion Week! In her over 20 years of philanthropic work, Jean has been a vital contributor to the success of many charitable organizations and graced the cover of numerous magazines. Jean can now add to her impressive list of accomplishments that of published author: her new book, Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give goes on sale March 8, 2016 from Hatherleigh Press/Random House.

In Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give, Jean aims to inspire a passion for giving in others. A comprehensive, powerful, and practical guide featuring an introduction by Georgina Bloomberg, Successful Philanthropy provides direction for the reader on how to get involved in philanthropy on every level, from the steps involved in how to choose a charity; how to be a volunteer fundraiser; what charity boards look for in their board members; how to follow your passions to find a charity that will be of interest to you; and more. Successful Philanthropy also offers profound inspiration and insight. Jean reminds us that we each have the ability to give back in our own unique way, and our efforts to improve the lives of others and the world around us can make positive change a reality. Giving is also rewarding and personally enriching, and helps us fulfill our true potential as human beings. When we build a life around the giving, we find self-fulfillment and change the world for the better. Practical, inspiring, and thought-provoking, Successful Philanthropy is already being praised by many as a one-of-a kind guide from a philanthropic insider: Jean herself. Indeed, the book’s guiding tenants are based on Jean’s own personal experience, which is extensive to say the least! Jean has over 20 years experience and is a board member for seven charities, including The New York Women’s Foundation, New York City Mission Society, French Heritage Society, The Couture Council of the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology, The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services and The Southampton Animal Shelter. Jean works as a volunteer fundraiser, chairs and co-chairs galas, sponsors lunches, and hosts events. She is also adept at the fine art of making the connection between potential donors with the appropriate charity. Jean’s tremendous contributions have helped raise significant sums of money to directly benefit those in need making her a vital asset to the success of numerous organizations. As Elsie McCabe Thompson, President of the New York Mission Society, states, “When it comes to giving, Jean Shafiroff leads the pack. To anyone who wants to fundraise, volunteer, or show support by giving, I must stress: [Jean’s book] should be your bible, your roadmap to success in the world of philanthropy.” Jean’s book is a comprehensive guide to giving for anyone seeking to give back, whether they are experienced or just starting out. Among the many topics included in the book are details on what charity boards look for; effective fundraising for a charity; the specifics of joining a board; appreciation of donors and volunteers; and more.

Successful Philanthropy also solidifies Jean’s place at the vanguard of a new generation of philanthropists. Jean is helping to redefine philanthropy with a new, modern understanding that encourages everyone to become philanthropists. As Jean states in her book, “Philanthropy is not an exclusive club. It is open to all.” A modern definition of philanthropy “casts aside the notion that only the wealthy can be philanthropists.” As is outlined in her book, to be a philanthropist, “Give what you can, whether it means donating finances, time as a volunteer, or sharing your skills and knowledge. All of these gifts are incredibly valuable and define you as a philanthropist.” Jean’s new interpretation of what it means to be a philanthropist sets her apart as a visionary and resource for a whole new generation of philanthropists. As Ana Oliveira, CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation puts it, “Jean Shafiroff‘s vision for philanthropy, as outlined in this book and carried out in her own life…sets forth a path for philanthropists, new and old, to reflect on their values and discover their own philanthropic identity.” Jean knows that a lifetime of successful philanthropy must be guided by what we’re most passionate about. As she states, “Practicing philanthropy can be done on a number of different levels. It means we can follow our passions to help our world and all those in it.” For Jean, those causes include working on behalf of underserved populations in need in New York City, Southampton, and elsewhere in the world; initiatives to ensure quality healthcare; advocating for the well-being and safety of animals who otherwise can’t speak for themselves; and women’s rights and welfare.

Successful Philanthropy guides the reader through a stepby-step process for identifying the cause of their choice based on their own personal passions, and then helps them find the right charity. It’s all part of the importance of teaching others to give back. Jean notes, “Many people are never exposed to giving back; they don’t even think about it.” Successful Philanthropy invites everyone to think about how giving plays a role in their life, and then gives them the tools they need to act. “Not too many people talk about how giving back needs to be taught,” she says. Jean believes strongly in the importance of teaching the next generation of philanthropists in schools and at home. A new generation of givers is key— to the present and the future. “When we all work towards a common goal,” writes Jean, “We can achieve far more than if just a small percentage of the population is involved.” Jean is personally committed to turning hope into reality for those in need. Successful Philanthropy is a powerful and inspiring call to action for others to do the same. “The invitation for us to give back is there, every day. It provides us with the opportunity to share with others and with the world. It offers us a choice—the most significant choice we face in our lifetime: to live with blinders on, ignoring the suffering and needs around us, or to step up and take action.” With her book, Jean hopes readers will “say yes to the chance to be a philanthropist and make giving a part of our lives. We cannot put off giving indefinitely. We must all try to do something. The time to get involved is now!”

The 50 Foot High Oval Greenhouse at Tiffany's Laurelton Hall, After the Tragic Fire in 1957

Gold Coast Ruins

M

Story and Photos by Monica Randall

ost of us are fascinated by decaying mansion ruins of a bygone era. They were always hidden away, off the beaten track, never open to the public because of the shear danger of exploring them. Here on the North Shore of Long Island, during the fifties and sixties, it seemed there were more abandoned places, about 400, than there were manor houses that were occupied and well-maintained by their proud owners. You could always spot them, or at least guess where they were hidden by the sight of the locked, rusting, twenty-foot gates that led down a mile-long overgrown drive. At the end, you would find some empty forbidden place, or fortress, toppling in on itself, encased in cobwebs, and broken glass. In those surreal settings, doors would creek, and plaster walls would appear to be melting to the floor like a Salvador Dali painting. Discovering those places had become a way of life around here. As kids, we called ourselves mansion hunters, and used aerial maps to track them

down, but unless you rode horses, and knew the complex network of bridle trails, you couldn’t get to them. It was indeed a lost world, and there really are no words to describe the full scope, essence and breadth of these ruins. It was almost too much to take in, too tragic and heartbreaking to comprehend. Not since the Civil War, when General Sherman’s army created a wave of destruction throughout the South, where hundreds of manor houses went down in a fiery blaze of glory. But that was war, and here on the Gold Coast the death-knell began with the frenzied stock market crash of 1929 that no one saw coming. Soon after the crash, about 500 of the most magnificent estates that were built along the rocky shores of the Long Island Sound began their slow descent into oblivion. One by one the estates were abandoned, few had the resources to maintain them, and over time, the Gold Coast became the ruin capital of the country.

Being an artist, the Gold Coast became the most exciting place in the world. There was magic, beauty and an atmosphere of suspense in those abandoned places that sparked the imagination, and made you wonder about the people who once lived there and what became of them. There was always some fascinating story that often surpassed anything you could dream up on your own. Farnsworth, in Oyster Bay, was the ruin to end all ruins, a 50 room palace with all its furnishings, oriental rugs, and priceless artworks just left there to rot for almost 30 years.

social gatherings. But Zog was strange and took to wearing vintage Tsarist Russian military uniforms and posted a mysterious bearded guard, who looked like Rasputin, outside the twenty-foot gates to keep the curious at bay. He refused to pay taxes to the U.S., as he claimed he was after all, a king, and could keep slaves if he wanted to. Nassau County officials thought he was nuts, and after nearly ten years of non-payment of taxes, Knollwood was demolished, leaving a pile of rubble, and the creeping vines to cover the wounds of King Zog’s forgotten dream.

We used to play there as kids, oblivious to its macabre history. It became our own private playground where we foraged through the dozens of old steamer trunks in the attic that were filled with beaded flapper gowns, and whimsical jewel-studded hats. Amid the dresses that came from Paris, we’d find faded love letters, revealing secrets and intrigues from half a century ago, along with the scent of perfume still clinging to them. We were entranced, when we should have been terrified to be alone in such a place. We became familiar with the sounds of old houses, the flapping of a shade in a broken window, the vague scuttling of a rat, or squirrel scampering about, unseen in the walls, and birds chattering in the rafters. We thought it was odd when we discovered the remains of a small plane stored off a wing in the basement. It would be years before I found out what happened to the once beautiful mistress of the manor.

Long before the bulldozers struck the first blow, the white elephants as they were called, took on a life of their own. Vines and crawling plants seemed to love them as they inched their way up through broken windows and made their way along the floors, forming a lush bower of greenery that was meant to stay outside. Overgrown gardens and greenhouses were especially captivating as marble nymphs and cherubs took on a coating of moss. The interiors of the greenhouses were taken over by weeds as vagrant trees shot up from the dirt floors and broke through the glass ceilings.

Her story made headlines in every newspaper both here and abroad. See: (Sept. issue, 2013, Farnsworth and The Bizarre Saga of Winifred Bird.) Poor Winnie Bird, her husband was killed in a plane crash in 1940. Perhaps out of sentiment, she saved the plane and abandoned the house with everything in it. Deeply depressed, she sought the help of a psychiatrist, who later murdered her for her millions in jewels. Even Hollywood couldn’t top that story, although Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard (1950), came close. But that was fiction. King’s, Queen’s And An Empress Or Two Back in the sixties, one of the most popular ruins to visit was Knollwood, off Route 106 in Syosset. At the time all that remained were broken columns, empty fountains, fragments and carvings from the once ornate palace all converged into a twisted, shattered mass of rubble. It was the former home of King Zog, the exiled king of Albania. The sixty-plus-room neo-classical manor was originally built by Charles McVeigh, a prominent New York lawyer. The massive house stood on a hill overlooking over three-hundred acres of formal gardens, pavilions, pools and long allees of imported trees. In 1951, the Long Island showplace made headlines when Zog, a former mountain fighter and last monarch of his country, came to the Gold Coast in search of a palace and enough land to start a new kingdom along with his army of serfs. Seeing that the property was the same size as the country of Monaco, he deemed it perfect, and is said to have paid for the estate with a bucket full of diamonds and rubies. In his homeland, Zog was plagued by numerous attempts on his life, and in 1939, Mussolini invaded and seized Albania. Zog narrowly escaped death by crossing the border just in time. Long Island’s North Shore seemed like paradise to him, and he imagined himself sipping mint juleps on a hammock strung from the marble pillars of his mansion, while his serfs worked the land. All of North Shore society was aflutter and eager to receive the King and his Queen Geraldine at elegant

Before Preservation Became Fashionable Just after the Second World War, there was a general feeling of apathy and reckless disregard for that grand way of life. After all, it was said, those massive estates were built by ruthless robber-barons who created them as monuments to their egos. They were also considered poor replicas of the original grand estates that stood for hundreds of years across the Atlantic in England, France and Scotland. But, when you stop to think about it, those manor houses were not really built by the idle rich, but by European artisans, the highly skilled woodcarvers, stone masons and landscape designers, who passed their formable talents down from father to son. Their craftsmanship and skill made those dream palaces possible, and they are true unsung heroes of the era. No one today can match or duplicate what they created. Here on Long Island, there were near replicas of Empress Josephine’s chateau, Malmaison, built by Napoleon, just outside of Paris. A smaller version, built in 1914, still stands hidden away just off Route 107, in Brookville. Castle Gould, in Sands Point was modeled after the medieval Castle Kilkenny in Ireland, and Voltaire’s Castle, was brought to this country stone by stone and reassembled on a hill overlooking a graveyard on 25 A. It was a fairy tale kind of place, built by Voltaire himself over three hundred years ago. The castle’s towers rise up dark and ominous, and with their medieval accents one would expect armored horses to suddenly storm out of the surrounding woods. But, most days, there is just a swarm of black crows circling overhead, cawing and shrieking as if to say, go away! The Grecian Ruins Of Meudon Meudon, located along the water’s edge in Lattingtown, was a replica of the famous Meudon Palace in France. The Long Island version was built at the turn of the last century by William D. Guthrie, who as a lawyer made millions managing the affairs of the Rockefeller’s. Guthrie, who liked the hilltop setting, with its breathtaking views of the Long Island Sound, bought what was then the entire town of Lattingtown. Hundreds of residents were dispersed when he had all the homes and stores demolished. The eightyroom palace, with its shield-bearing giant lions guarding the entrance was set off by six massive Corinthian columns. With three-hundred spectacular formal acres, it was a country unto itself where no one needed to leave to survive. There were massive dairy barns, farms, herds of cows, chicken March 2016 | 65

25A houses, horses, a boathouse and dock for the 112-foot family yacht, The Meudon III. It took fifty full-time gardeners to keep the grounds looking like those at Versailles. After the master of the house passed away in 1935, his wife Ella Guthrie remained in the home until her death in 1958, where I’m told a piece of the plaster ceiling toppled onto the bed she was resting in. Otto Kahn’s Castle Finally we have a story with a happy ending, thanks to the current dedicated owner Gary Melius, who has worked tirelessly for over thirty years to restore the castle back to its former glory. During the early eighties, Oheka Castle was considered the most spectacular ruin in the country. Most of its hundred and twenty-six rooms had collapsed ceilings, buckled floors and nearly a thousand broken windows. The fountains and pools were smashed and the only thing living there were raccoons and pigeons. On the market for years, developers avoided the massive monster because it would cost more to tear it down than they could make from developing it. It was built in 1921 by the flamboyant banking magnate, Otto Kahn who spent two years raising a mountain so that his castle would be on the tallest site on Long Island. His parties were legendary, and guests included such greats as Enrico Caruso, Anna Pavlova, Constantin Stanislavski, and royal heads of Europe. Kahn passed away in 1934 and the house fell into ruin. Now completely restored it is considered one of the great architectural achievements in the country. A Southern Plantation The Sir Ashley Sparks estate, “Northaw,” a southern-style plantation in Syosset recalls a scene out of Gone With the Wind. Even after vandals torched the mansion in 1970, it looked like Ashley Wilks’s ancestral home, Twelve Oaks, with only its charred pillars and spiral staircase left standing. Sparks, was the chairman of the board of Cunard Steamship lines, and built the 300-acre, park-like estate just after the turn of the last century. Tiffany’s Lauralton Hall One of the great tragedies in Long Island history was the senseless destruction of Lewis C. Tiffany’s hundred-room showplace designed by him in 1909. He had hoped it would stand forever as a monument to house his vast collection of artworks and stained glass masterpieces. Designed in Mission-Moorish style it was considered one of the most innovative architectural achievements at the time with its all-glass interiors that brought the formal gardens indoors. Inspired by the works of Monet, Tiffany created breathtaking waterfalls, lagoons and man-made lakes filled with pastel-colored water lilies. Tiffany passed away in 1934, but he had created a foundation that allowed struggling artists to live there during the summer months. Tiffany’s legacy ended in March 1957, when three local high school boys set fire to the massive house, and over the next five days firefighters fought in vain to put out the flames. There were no hydrants, and hoses could only reach the Long Island Sound during high tide. It is estimated that nearly a billion dollars worth of his artworks were destroyed in the fire.

The Grecian Pillars and Now Empty Pool at Meudon, in Lattingtown were Often Used for Photo Shoots During the 1970s

Pembroke Pembroke, was built by the dynamic Captain Joseph DeLamar, who made his fortune from salvaging gold from shipwrecks. Built on a scale that is hard to imagine today, it had everything, including a giant 200-foot palm conservatory, with a gold-tiled indoor pool, bowling alley, a 400-seat movie theater, indoor tennis court and a beach cabana that looked like a miniature palace. It stood empty for decades, and was all the more beguiling as nature took over its massive walls. But it’s the sounds I remember about the place that haunt me still: the eerie echo in the giant cave grotto, the haunting cries of the mourning doves in the long-dead palm trees and the incessant droning of the foghorns from the great yachts on the Long Island Sound. Pembroke was demolished in 1968. Research sources: The Mansions of Long Island’s Gold Coast, 1988 Rizzoli International. Kingsley

Modern Dining on the Lower East Side

W

By Hillary Latos

ith previous stints at Chicago’s Blackbird, NYC’s WD~50, Blue Hill at Stone Barns and Alison Eighteen, Chef Roxanne Spruance has worked with some of the most renowned chefs in the country. Throughout her enviable career, she developed her signature style with an unstoppable creative force that pushes the boundaries of contemporary American cuisine while creating a sustainably driven kitchen. Pursuing her dream of heading up her own kitchen, this winter Roxanne Spruance has brought her vision and passion in the kitchen and opened Kingsley in the East Village with partners Drs. John Athas and Monica Tadros. Evoking a cool minimalist vibe awash in a contemporary neutral palette and large bay windows, Kingsley feels more Tribeca than East Village, setting the stage for a truly unforgettable meal to come. Growing up as an athlete, Roxanne has an inherent fearlessness which has been translated to her approach to food where she experiments with using strong flavors and different ingredients that cross genres and ethnicities. A specialty of the house is the roasted bone marrow accented with braised beef tongue morsels followed by a date sherry shot down the bone marrow luge. Another dish with vibrant flavors is the celeriac agnolotti paired with seared foie gras and black pepper gastrique. Elevating traditional ethnic dishes with unique combinations is the chawanmushi with an egg and dashi custard, escargot, daikon and cranberry. For the main course, the chicken thigh Napoleon is sublime with a lightly crisped skin that

retains the natural au jus of the chicken and is paired with grits and cippolinis. It would only be fitting that a creative menu would have a killer bar team that epitomizes cocktail culture. Helmed by Bar Theory who are known for creating out-of-the box cocktail programs for some of the city’s hottest venues, their bespoke drinks are an extension of the creative spirit of Kingsley. Classic old-world cocktails sit alongside specialty artisanal drinks driven by seasonal ingredients. Innovative elixirs include the spicy Oaxaca Smash with mezcal, spicy agave, and chai sweet vermouth. The Casanova uses select ingredients such as aperol, Lillet blanc, blood orange reduction and prosecco for a twist on the classics. And the Asian-inspired Himiko’s Aura is a refreshing yet potent option with Daron Calvados, sake, yuzu and velvet falernum. Whether grabbing a bite at the bar, sumptuous lounge or in the dining room, Kingsley is redefining the culinary landscape of NYC. Chef Spruance’s innovative take on contemporary French-American cuisine matched with her passion and talent sets her apart from the competition of rising new chefs. 190 Avenue B NY, NY 10009 212.674.4500 kingsleynyc.com

lthough a good meal is made up of delicious flavors and good combinations, there is one additional aspect that is often overlooked. That is the tradition involved in the food being served. At Alfredo 100, tradition is an important ingredient that is found in every dish. Alfredo 100 is based on a restaurant in Italy called Alfredo of Rome. This original restaurant was opened in 1914 and has since become an iconic restaurant that celebrities from around the world flock to. Alfredo 100 was born in New York City in 2014 to celebrate the 100 years’ worth of tradition that the original Alfredo started. It even carries over a lot of the same dishes including the specialty, Fettuccini Alfredo. The Fettuccini Alfredo is known around the world for the simplicity of its flavors and how it represents the best of Italian cuisine. The idea of simple, yet delicious is apparent all throughout the restaurant and not just in the food. The decorations reflect this theme with the interior designed with a “retro meets modern look. The entire restaurant screams casual yet elegant. The co-founders of Alfredo 100 are Ilaria Coletto and Russell Bellanca. Although they now live in New York, each of them is from Italy where the 70 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

tradition of sweet Italian flavors is ingrained into their own styles. To add to the quality staff, Ilaria and Russell hired James Henderson to be the executive chef at Alfredo 100. While Ilaria and Russell bring their Italian traditions to the restaurant, James brings his New York roots to the table by knowing what the local people enjoy. With 20 years of kitchen experience, James Handerson tries to bring a simplicity to his food and allow people to experience traditional Italian cooking in its purest form. No longer do New Yorkers have to travel all the way to Italy to eat at the Alfredo of Rome restaurant. There is an alternative option right in their own backyard that perfectly captures all the flavors of traditional Italian cooking. When people take their first bite of Fettuccini Alfredo, the simplicity of the flavors will transport them right to Rome. This is because of the strong dedication to tradition that Ilaria Coletto and Russell Bellanca bring to a restaurant where, in addition to cheese and tomatoes, tradition is the most important ingredient.

Insa

Approachable Korean in Brooklyn

T

By Ryan Wilk here is one type of restaurant the vibrant nightlife area of Gowanus, Brooklyn has lacked and it’s a Korean barbecue karaoke place. Now, with the opening of Insa, Gowanus has all the bases covered.

Those familiar with the popular Red Hook restaurant, Good Fork, should be interested in trying out this new place, as it shares the same owners – Sohui Kim and Ben Schneider—teaming up again to deliver a dining experience that not only serves a unique menu, but also has a fun and communal atmosphere. This time, they’ve also partnered with their Chef de Cuisine, Michael Stokes. Michael has spent the last 25 years in food establishments across New York City and the Hamptons. Sohui and Ben are lucky to have him on their team. What makes Insa special is that it is the only place in the area that serves Korean a barbecue where singing karaoke is part of the experience. Unique food plus fun, a powerful combination and just what the Gowanus neighborhood needed. The interior of the restaurant really reflects upon this idea. It has great lighting with high ceilings and long communal tables. A red palette is the dominant color scheme, combining a traditional Korean vibe with a New York City edge.

72 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Some of the standout barbecue dishes at Insa include thinly sliced Berkshire pork belly as well as marinated short ribs. Although these types of dishes are at the heart of the restaurant’s style, Insa also offers a diversity of classic Korean dishes. One dish that falls under this category is tteokbokki, which are spicy rice cakes with fish cakes and eggs. This dish offers a wonderful blend of spicy and savory flavors. The founders have also put an emphasis on dishes that can be shared. Any group arriving for the first time should definitely get an order of Sohui Kim’s pork, beef and chive dumplings, or for the vegetarian diner, vegetable and kimchi dumplings that have become famous since their introduction at Good Fork. After swirling them into a slightly sweet dipping sauce, you’ll never want any other dumpling again. Come for the karaoke, the drinks or the food, there’s always a good reason to go to Insa. Although it is still fairly new to the neighborhood, it has already taken its place as a fun and delicious dining experience in Gowanus. Insa may be on to the next big thing in dining. 328 Douglass St Brooklyn, NY 11217 718.855.2620 insabrooklyn.com

he masterminds behind Benjamin Steakhouse are adventuring to new heights as they explore the vast frontier that is the ocean. The durable vessel that is guiding them on this journey is their new Manhattan restaurant, The Sea Fire Grill. Classic land dishes such as the dry-aged steaks from Benjamin Steakhouse can also be found on the menu in addition to a new assortment of great seafood dishes where the fish is the star. The Sea Fire Grill specializes in contemporary American seafood. The restaurant is located in an upscale space with elegant dining rooms that each has their own fireplace. The wait staff is friendly, accommodating and well-versed in the menu and nightly specials. For those looking to venture out into the colder regions of the sea, there is a raw bar that includes shrimp, clams, oysters and chilled lobster. Every table is started off with homemade bread served with a house-made whitefish spread. Other than delicious flavors and fresh locally sourced food, the one thing that you can expect from The Sea Fire Grill is consistency. The chefs aim for perfection with every dish they cook. Their main priority is to use sauces and seasonings to enhance the fish without overpowering it. As a result, in all the seafood dishes, the fish is the main attraction. Appetizers such as Pan Roasted Scallops and Tuna Tartar “Nicoise” are delicious and great starters. An example of a popular entrée is the Whole Maine Lobster which 74 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

is stuffed with crab meat. Their Surf & Turf with Alaskan King Crab Legs in drawn butter is a spin on the classic. There is also a separate bar menu with Tuna Tartar, Oysters Rockefeller and Lobster Rolls for those looking for a light bite. An upscale restaurant wouldn’t be complete without a bar to top it all off. The Sea Fire Grill has a complete menu of over 500 wines as well as a large number of sake and beer selections. Each cocktail has been specifically added to the menu to enhance certain dishes, so a server should be able to suggest the best drink to pair with your fish. Getting a unique seafood dish complimented with the perfect cocktail creates a perfectly satisfying dining experience. The brave explorers from Benjamin Steakhouse took a chance by venturing into the unknown world of seafood and have come out on the other side. Having caught the most delicious fish and satisfied countless customers, they can officially declare themselves masters of land and sea. Surya

Enlightened Indian Downtown

T

By Ryan Wilk

he Indian restaurant, Surya recently reopened in Greenwich Village after closing its Bleecker street location. After being around for 10 years and building a reputation for its upscale Indian food, Surya unfortunately had to move out because of damage from hurricane Sandy. Although it hasn’t been around in this location for long, Surya is already regaining its reputation in this area for having good service, great prices, and being one of the few upscale places to eat in the village. Surya wouldn’t deserve the title of upscale Indian restaurant if they couldn’t provide the food that lives up to that name. As it turns out, Surya can hang on to that title as their food has been getting great reviews by local people looking to have an enjoyable bite to eat. Anyone who was a regular at their last location will be happy to learn that the new menu isn’t all that different. The main focus of their menu is British Indian food inspired by colonial India. A popular dish of theirs is the lamb chops. Complex dishes with a lot of ingredients pale in comparison to something simple that is cooked to perfection. That being said, Surya does have some more intricate dishes as well. The lamb korma achieves the perfect balance between sweet and spicy with its rich creamy sauce. 76 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

In addition to the delicious food, Surya is also gaining attraction for its extensive drink menu. Their $6 premium beers are difficult to pass up at the end of a long day. If you’re looking for a nice upscale drink, you might find yourself gravitating towards their cocktail options. Although you can get standard mixed drinks, what makes Surya’s bar so unique is their use of Indian ingredients to make the restaurant a hot spot for traditional Indian culture. The bartenders put these ingredients together in unique and inventive ways to make this restaurant the place to come back to when you’re looking to try something new. Now that Surya has established itself in its new location, hopefully it will be able to continue fulfilling the role of the fanciest Indian restaurant in the area. If it continues to draw in the kinds of crowds it’s seen its first few weeks, Surya will become an important part of the community that continues to thrive for another 10 years and beyond. 154 Bleecker St NY, NY 10012 212.875.1405 suryanyc.com

our Cuts Steakhouse is the first boutique steakhouse venture for Executive Chef Christopher Miller. Prior to opening Four Cuts in the Sutton Place neighborhood on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Miller was the Executive Chef of Bobby Van’s for over 13 years and has had additional experience in the kitchen of Ben Benson Steakhouse, Mortimer’s, and Bryant Park Grill. Four Cuts’ space in the Sutton Place neighborhood, was completely re-designed by C3D Architecture, which set out to create a unique look for the Four Cuts space by combining the sleek look of modern design with rustic elements associated with traditional steakhouses to create an elegant, welcoming dining room. In addition, Marlaina Deppe of Novo Arts is providing a special wall garden, which has been installed on the columns in the main dining room. Franco Lucic of LMF Group designed the walnut wood paneling featured on the restaurant’s walls and on its columns, which accentuate the wall gardens. Paname

An Upper East Side French Bistro

P

By W.A. Muller

aname is a charming French restaurant on Second Avenue at 56th. My friend and I found it one evening when we were wandering in the area, hungry. From the outside it looked like a charming French spot. Inside it's equally charming. We walked in and were greeted warmly by a lovely waitress. We were seated at a comfortable table, enjoyed a glass of wine and perused the menu. Excellent three-course prix-fixe dinners are $38 and three-course lunches are $25. The lunch menu has sandwiches and omelets in addition to entrees. I ordered Pate Maison aux Cornichons as an appetizer and my friend had Escargots in Baby Potatoes with Garlic Butter. We were completely content. The food was typically French as was the excellent crusty bread with butter served piled on a small rock which was a lovely touch. For our entrees, my friend had the Cod Fish a la Nicoise and I had the Wild Tilapia with Asparagus and Almonds. When we finished our entrees, we aked to meet the owner, Bernard Ros, who is also the executive chef. Mr. Ros told us he came from Paris (hence the name: Paname is French slang for Paris), traveled all over the world as a restaurant consultant and had owned many restaurants in Manhattan.

78 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Paname is his latest, having been open for a few years and, from what we could see, was already a neighborhood favorite. I have since learned that Ros is considered one of the most knowledgeable people in the restaurant business. The cuisine was unformly excellent and the service was attentive. We actually felt as though we were dining in a corner of Paris. If we had wanted to order a la carte, we could have ordered Sauteed Shrimp in a Potato Nest on a Bed of Rice for $24 or Roast Duck for $29. Pork Scallopini with Mushrooms for $22 also looked delicious. When we return, which will be soon, we'll probably try one of these. For dessert we had a flourless chocolate cake (sublime) and an apple tarte, very French. With our desserts came a small dish of cookies, a gift from the chef. A perfect ending to a perfect French dinner.

Bobby Van’s

Reaffirms the Heritage of Grand Steakhouse Dining

B

By Elizabeth Darwin

obby Van’s Steakhouse has earned its place as a venerable New York institution, thanks in part to a continued commitment to cooking techniques perfected years ago by the founding fathers of New York steakhouse cuisine. Celebrating its 46th Anniversary in 2015, Bobby Van’s grew from its original home in Bridgehampton, NY, and now includes a repertoire of nine fine restaurants that offer the refined style of a classic New York City steakhouse. A quintessential steakhouse, Bobby Van’s is at the roots of the New York steakhouse family tree, with strong employee connections to original famed eateries. It is restaurants like Bobby Van’s that have inspired a legion of imitators, but Bobby Van’s still shines as a premier authentic steakhouse. When restaurateur and Chef Robert Dickert - the great-nephew of steakhouse legend Peter Luger - joined the Bobby Van’s team in 1996, he brought with him a wealth of family knowledge and tradition. These traditions of quality food and superior customer service are still the hallmark of Bobby Van’s dining experience today. Dicker remains at Bobby Van’s where he helps to oversee the all-important process of selecting and dry aging the kitchen’s quality prime beef. Executive Chef Craig Jermin, who has also been at the company some 20 years, says the culinary team are passionate about the age-old family techniques that have been passed down for generations. “We are proud of our connection to the Luger tradition and are fiercely dedicated to providing the very best steak in New York City.” The process of dry aging its USDA prime quality beef is key to developing the superior flavor of Bobby Van’s’ steaks, Jermin says, which they do “the

old fashioned way.” Once the team carefully selects well-raised and wellmarbled steak, they age it in a specially-designed, humidity-controlled room for up to 28 days, which tenderizes it and enriches the flavor. Prime beef aside, the kitchen import the majority of their seafood from overseas. “If you want to serve the best, you have to source and buy the best,” Jermin says. In New York City, where restaurants tend to shine brightly then fade like a show on Broadway, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse has more than passed the test of time. Each night the restaurants pack out with Wall Street tycoons, famous athletes, New York’s political tycoons, celebrities, and others wanting to experience to soak up the elegant atmosphere and impeccable service. Bobby Van opened his first restaurant in Bridgehampton, New York in the summer of 1969. After two successful decades, Bobby sold this restaurant to a group of four restaurateurs: Joseph Smith, Joe Phair, Rick Passarelli, and Joe Hickey who opened a second Bobby Van’s Steakhouse location in the Helmsley Building on Park Avenue. The Bobby Van’s Family has grown to also include Bobby Van’s Park Avenue on East 46th Street, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse and Grill on Broad Street in the Financial District, Bobby Van’s Grill on East 54th Street, two Times Square locations on West 45th Street and West 50th Street, two Washington D.C. locations, an airport restaurant in JFK’s Terminal 8, and a take-out burger joint called BV’s Burger, which is also located in Times Square.

25A The Restaurant Group Brings Three Dynamic Dining Concepts to New York City

F

By W.A. Muller

ounded in 1990 by Jeremy Wladis, The Restaurant Group is a special portfolio comprising of several distinctive restaurant brands with 20 different locations in New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington D.C. The three restaurants represented are just a selection of the six brands underneath the Restaurant Group umbrella within New York City, satisfying eclectic tastes that offer diners anything from South of the Border barbecue to made to order customized pizzas. Common to all the Restaurant Group properties is that they are all neighborhood eateries that became an important part of the fabric of the communities they reside in.

Amigos Chef Alex Garcia has made Amigos Mex-i-que Mexican & Barbecue a popular neighborhood hangout by filling it with his own friends, including James Beard Award nominee Aaron Sanchez (Chopped, Taco Trip), Adrien Leon and Roberto Santibanez (author of Tacos, Tortas and Tamales), who will man the kitchen for monthly “residencies.” Highlights include the madeto-order guacamole (ranked fourth best in the US) as well as spicy dishes that straddle the line between Mexican and barbecue, like the Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries and coleslaw or the Slow Cooked Pork Carnitas with creamy tomatillo and avocado salsa with pico de gallo. 2888 Broadway, NYC, 212.864.1143 amigosnyc.com

Custom Fuel Pizza A Harlem eatery, Custom Fuel Pizza & Salads allows guests to “build your own” with a myriad of pizza crusts, sauces, and locally sourced, seasonal toppings to choose from to craft a personalized meal. Dietary restrictions like vegan, dairy and or gluten free can all be accommodated and customized by diners from a menu of artisanal pizzas such as the Brooklyn Bridge (Tomato Sauce, Fresh Mozzarella, Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Rosemary, Cherry Peppers, Chili Oil, Prosciutto), the Prosciutto, Fig & Arugula (Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, Fig Marsala, Prosciutto, Olive Oil, Arugula) or the Riviera (Olive Oil, Spinach, Mozzarella, Tomato, Garlic, Artichoke, Kalamata Olives, and Goat Cheese). Custom Fuel is also committed to green living, using pedal power for deliveries, and paper products with 50- to 100-percent recycled paper. 2288 Frederick Douglass Blvd, NYC, 646.524.5636 customfuelpizza.com Firehouse Immerse yourself in firefighter culture at this temple to New York’s Bravest. s winter begins to taper off, most of us realize we need to be a bit healthier than we were during the cold, snowy months; however, it’s easier said than done. If you’re struggling to incorporate more vegetables into your diet because you’re tired of cooking the same boring recipes, here are some ideas to make veggies much more interesting while improving your health: Artichokes are a great vegetable because they have so many health benefits that people don’t necessarily know about; it’s considered a superfood and is packed with magnesium, which can give the body more energy. The best way to serve artichokes is to stuff them – which is actually quite easy to do. Cut the top of the artichoke, take out the heart, then cut the bottom so it lies flat. Place the artichoke at the bottom of a pan and cook in the oven or on a stovetop. Pull away the leaves and add your favorite stuffing, such as a garlic herb infused breadcrumbs and parmesan, or sundried tomatoes and feta, or even gorgonzola and fresh herbs.

Green beans provide antioxidants and have cardiovascular benefits, so they’re a great vegetable to incorporate into your diet. If you’re sick of the basic green bean, explore cooking with Japanese string beans. They’re especially good served up with a sweet and spicy chili sauce. It adds a little flair to the average, everyday green bean and has a fabulous flavor. You can also mix green beans with marinara sauce, or bake them as a casserole dish to make them a little heartier. Stuffed cabbage doesn’t bring back appealing memories for many who have tried this dish with a traditional, too-sweet sauce. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Stuffed cabbage has so much more flavor potential and is also very easy to make. Take a head of cabbage, steam it and pull off the leaves. Next, create a healthy mixture of chopped lean meat, brown rice, onion, and fresh herbs. Wrap it in the leaves and put it in a pot to steam. This will give the traditional stuffed cabbage dish the flavor makeover it needs. Peppers are a fantastic vegetable packed with vitamins, including vitamin C, which keeps your skin looking great. There are so many varieties of peppers, so load them all into your grocery cart and get creative! You can stuff them with different combinations, such as spinach, olives and quinoa,

or sausage, melted mozzarella and tomato sauce – feel free to get creative! Eggplant is a delicious, readily available vegetable this time of year, and it can be healthy – don’t think of it just in the context of eggplant parmesan. It’s filled with vitamins and minerals, and there are so many delicious and healthy ways to cook it. Cut a whole eggplant in half, hollow out the middle and add a heart healthy mixture, such as chicken, spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms in a harissa sauce. Or, fill it with farro, ginger and pomegranate, or lean beef, bulgur and pine nuts. Once stuffed, bake it in the oven and enjoy. Looking for a healthier way to eat pasta? Spaghetti squash is a fantastic substitute and provides a healthy dose of vitamin A, B and C, as well as minerals that are vital for good health. Just cut it in half, drizzle with olive oil, butter, salt and pepper and roast it in the oven. Once soft, scrape the insides out with a fork to form spaghetti-like strands. The best part is, it goes with all of your favorite sauces, such as pesto, Bolognese, or simply olive oil, salt, pepper and parmesan. Vegetables don’t have to be boring! When done right, they can provide a healthy – and more importantly, delicious – transition into healthier eating as we all anticipate warmer months ahead. March 2016 | 85

AGING, Everyone’s Enemy Can Now be a Thing of the Past

S Katherine Sempecos, Owner

By W.A. Muller

ay good-bye to Aging, as we welcome a new era. Clinical Anti-Aging and the study of how we age, be it evolutionary, biological, medical, social or psychological has evolved substantially in recent years. Together with the implementation of the many alternative forms of medicine and combined with technologically advanced medical esthetic treatments, we are able to completely rejuvenate the face, body and mind. What a great time to be alive and benefit from these technologies.

The new holistic approach to aging enables us to uncover the root cause and really nip it in the bud before becoming an issue. The truth is that Aging is a disease. Yes, that’s right, Aging can be classified as a DISEASE. And, as such, when treated preventatively, the aging process can be slowed down to greatly improve your quality and longevity of life. Long Island has an abundance of spas and medical spas offering the usual medical aesthetic treatments. However, very few address how to age well from the inside out. Two experts in the medical and aesthetics field, members of the American Anti Aging Association, have change that. Dr. Maria Levada and Katherine Sempecos knew the ‘Prism’ concept would shake things up, while offering a way for ‘Aging Well.’ They were determined to help women and men regain their quality of life, vitality, and a youthful appearance. Katherine Sempecos, also an Aesthetician and Medical Laser expert for over 20 years, brings her European expertise and exclusivities to Prism. tight and firm skin and managing menopausal symptoms. Diagnostics utilized are: • DNA Test, shows the body’s natural predisposition to the five most common age-related diseases (Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, oxidative stress, Alzheimer’s ) • Oxidative Stress Test reveals levels of free-radical damage, directly related to the cellular and organ aging • Brain and Motor Function Reactive Testing • Other Biochemical Blood and Hormone Saliva Testing • Bio-Marker Telomerase and ANS Heart Variance Testing which examine internal biological age, as compared to your chronological age. • Complete Body Analysis and External Body Assessment (as related to existing age) including BMI index, muscle mass, fat mass, weight, metabolic function, skin condition, tone, etc. Anti Aging Programs: Hormone Support and Replacement Therapy – Dr. Maria Levada • Vitamin Infusion Therapy & B12 Shots • Medical Ozone Capsule Therapy (or Activated Oxygen Therapy) • Holistic Detox & Nutritional Program • Revolutionary Medical Esthetics Program using the “Liquid Face Lift” technique, Aerolase and Plasmalite FPL Laser Skin Rejuvenation therapy, the latest in Venus VIVA Radio Frequency Fractional technology and the Venus Legacy RF/PEMF for Face and Body • 30-Day Fast Track Weight-Loss Program Prism Med Spa is located at 41 Main Street in Roslyn. 10 Tips for Losing Weight & Keeping It Off

I

By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN

f you’re looking to lose weight, you may be overwhelmed by the process of making (and sustaining) food and lifestyle changes. When it comes to weight management, there is no “one-size-fits-all plan.” Nevertheless, I have found in my practice that some strategies are typically more successful than others in helping clients achieve their weight and lifestyle goals:

times to keep your metabolism running and your blood sugar stable during emergency situations. Nutritionally-sound snacks include a lean protein source and a high-fiber carbohydrate like a piece of fruit and handful of roasted nuts, some raw veggie sticks and a hard-boiled egg, or a serving of whole grain crackers with one ounce of cheese.

1. Keep a food journal: I know I have preached this before, but recording your food and beverage intake can be very helpful for weight management. The task of writing down each morsel (although tedious in the beginning), makes you more mindful and aware of what, why, and how much you are eating.

7. Stay hydrated: Hydration can curb hunger and boost your metabolism, according to research. Carry around a large bottle of water to remind yourself to drink consistently throughout the day. Try adding some cucumber, mint, lemon, or melon for added flavor.

2. Don’t focus on what you should NOT be doing or eating: Many people jump into a diet by resolving to NOT do or eat many things that they were previously. For example, “I will not eat carbohydrates,” or “I will not eat after 7pm.” Rather than focus on the things you are “taking away,” it is more helpful to focus on the things you “can” and “will” do.

8. Don’t skip meals: When you go long periods of time without fueling yourself, your blood sugar drops and you’ll be less likely to make healthy choices at the next meal or snack.

3. Treat yourself with compassion: Understand that you are human and that you cannot be 100% for 100% of the time. If you indulge in a sugar and butter-laden cookie or have a larger serving of pasta than planned, acknowledge that you slipped up but get back on track immediately. 4. Practice the 80/20 rule: Make 80% of the food you eat healthy and acknowledge that the other 20% of your daily caloric intake is for fun. If you deprive yourself entirely, you’ll be more tempted to binge later on. 5. Be patient and realistic: Unfortunately, weight loss takes time. Your habits weren’t created overnight and they will not change overnight either. Focus on the small changes that are happening to keep you motivated until you reach the big picture. 6. Be prepared: Fail to plan and plan to fail. Pack small snacks on you at all 88 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

9. Cut down, not out: Reduce portions of less healthy foods rather than removing entire categories. For example, reduce your portion of pasta from 1 cup to ½ cup and add another ½ cup serving of high-fiber vegetables to bulk up the pasta dish. 10. Keep the big picture in mind: When you feel your willpower thinning out, take a moment to reflect on WHY you are making these changes. The Wellesley

Your Own Royal Residence in London

T

By Janis Turk

HE Wellesley is kind of hotel may change your mind about London— and possibly about life. Housed in a historic building that once was the entrance to Hyde Park Corner Tube station, close to Buckingham Palace between Green Park and Hyde Park, The Wellesley offers a little luxury cocoon of calm and elegance in the heart of England’s largest and most sophisticated city.

fine dining and exceptional staff, including personal butlers and to unpack your bags, press your suit, draw your bath, chill your champagne and more. But best of all, The Wellesley offers guests complimentary transportation to nearby locations in a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce. With impeccable service and a staff/guest ratio of 3-1, the hotel flaunts a grand hotel style on a boutique hotel scale.

Guests are instantly made to feel at ease—like coming home—upon entering this stylish London townhouse-style property of 36 rooms (most being suites), and many remember how for decades the space was home to London’s popular jazz salon, Pizza on the Park. Today this hot address boasts a posh little champagne- and candle-colored boutique hotel accented with sparkling touches of Art Deco glamour. Often referred to as a six-star hotel, The Wellesley features tasteful rooms and suites, cloud-like beds,

So how might The Wellesley change one’s mind? It’s the realization that one gets, in a place so posh polished, that there is indeed a different way to travel, and perhaps even to live: A way of true rest and rejuvenation. Here guests are reminded that beauty can be soul-soothing, and that quiet, clean luxury—even in one’s own modest home—is restorative. Sure, such epiphanies in a hotel like The Wellesley come at a dear price point, but if and when one can splurge on travel, this is the place to do it.

92 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Part of the hotel’s charm is that, in a city as big and bustling as London, The Wellesley is so tranquil and tiny. The slender lobby (a long corridor with high arched ceilings, glittering oversized chandeliers, classic columns, and gleaming floors of black and white Italian marble) ends in a wall of mirrors, and tucked away on each side of the lobby are intimate lounges and dining rooms.

view by hedges. It also has a walk-in humidor featuring the finest cigars in London, many purchased at exclusive private auctions in Cuba, some being 60-70 years old, and some even hand-made by Fidel Castro’s private cigar roller. Across from the hall, the Crystal Bar offers rare, aged cognacs (one dating back to the 1770s) and outdoor seating in a private, roof-covered courtyard warmed by a gas fireplace.

Although the lobby is small, the suites are spacious. With a gleaming Art Deco/Hollywood Regency glamour, the rooms, suites, and handsome hallways remind me of The Gatsby Suite at New York’s Plaza Hotel. Each named for old-school Hollywood stars and jazz musicians, the rooms were designed by Fox Linton in taupe and silver tones, with champagne colored curtains and bedding, blackout draperies, Italian sheets, and large bathrooms of heavily veined white Italian statuary marble.

The Wellesley’s Oval Restaurant features authentic Italian cuisine and a carefully curated wine list, and each day, afternoon tea is observed in the Jazz Lounge with delectibles from pastry chef Cristiano Paolini. The lounge also has live jazz performances on Friday and Saturday nights.

Downstairs in the hotel’s Cigar Bar & Terrace, a heated terrace offers covered outdoor seating with a fireplace, all intimately protected from

Hotel owner Khalid Affara says he hopes guests will think of The Wellesley as their London home. I like to think of it as the home I’ve always longed to have in the London I’ve always loved. thewellesley.co.uk March 2016 | 93

Gorgeous Gozo By the Sea

W

By Victoria R. Crosby

hat comes to mind when you think of Malta? The Knights of St. John, the Maltese Cross, historic sites, a beautiful harbor, almost perfect weather, great food, crystal clear water, sandy beaches, the Maltese Falcon? Malta has all of the above and much more. The islands of Malta are not a common destination for Americans, as it is a long non-direct flight. But Malta has so much to offer, and is well worth the travel time. Malta was recently listed as one of the top places to visit in 2016 by the New York Times.

the style of architecture, in addition to the natural beauty and variety of scenery. The weather in Malta, which is off the coast of Sicily, was sunny and comfortably warm in early December. I arrived at the five star Corinthia Hotel St. George’s Bay, where I was enchanted by the lovely view of the Mediterranean Sea from the balcony of my luxurious suite. The staff there were friendly, and everybody in Malta speaks English, as the British were in Malta for more than a hundred and fifty years. There are British red phone boxes and letterboxes, and statues of Queen Victoria, as reminders that Malta was part of the British Empire until 1964. Victoria is the capital of Gozo.

I flew Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, with a short layover, then a two hour flight to Malta. It was my first time flying Turkish Airlines, and it was a very pleasant experience. All food choices were presented on a menu, with everything included; a first class experience in business class. The airport in Istanbul is modern, with great shopping opportunities.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had been there the week before I arrived. They are reported to have fond memories of Malta, as they spent their honeymoon there in 1947, and have returned many times since then. Malta is now a republic, part of the European Union since 1990, using the Euro as their currency.

My visit to Malta was for the premier of By The Sea, the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt movie, which was filmed in Malta, on the island of Gozo, replicating the South of France. The Maltese landscape can represent various places, since over the centuries many cultures have occupied Malta, and influenced

During my stay at the Corinthia I had a relaxing massage and facial in the Apollo spa at the hotel. There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, which I didn’t have time to use, and several wonderful restaurants, including Caviar and Bull and Buddhamann, where I had delectable dining experiences.

94 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The film premier was a fundraising event, chaired by Michelle Muscat, the wife of the Prime Minster, to benefit the Marigold Foundation, a Maltese non-profit organization, which raises awareness of the challenges faced in the community. Working at a grass roots level within the communities; with schools and young people, sharing information that addresses social behavior, health issues, special needs and education. Marigold.org.

Movies filmed in Gozo include Troy, Swept Away and The Count of Monte Cristo, where the St. Mary’s Tower, constructed in the 1400s, represented the Chateau d’if. Also scenes from Game of Thrones are filmed there. Financial incentives are given to production companies to film in Malta, which also has a near perfect climate, wonderful natural light and landscape conducive to many genres of films, from science fiction to medieval drama.

A champagne reception was held in the Pearl Lounge of the Corinthia, then another one in the lobby of the theater in Valletta, the capital of Malta, prior to the screening, and a short film about the charity was shown first. By The Sea, has beautiful scenery, cinematography, costumes and music, but it wasn’t a critically or publicly acclaimed film by any means. One of the extras in some of the scenes was a handsome young man in the travel industry, who told me of his experience and only had positive remarks about Angelina and Brad.

Angelina Jolie Pitt is quoted as saying, “It has been such a fulfilling experience to shoot By The Sea in Malta, and I am honored to have spent time on this beautiful island learning about its rich history and fascinating culture.” The time the couple spent in Malta was their unofficial honeymoon, or as Brad put it their “dysfunctional honeymoon.”.

Following in the footsteps of “Brangelina,” our visit to the island of Gozo, where the film was set, was a magical experience. A boat ride from the main island around the limestone cliffs, caves and lagoons of the smallest island, Comino, a little more than a square mile, where there is one hotel, but only four year round residents. There are no cars on Comino, it is a bird sanctuary, ideal for walking, biking and hiking, with white sand beaches, crystal clear water and the Blue Lagoon, which is a perfect spot for many water sports, including swimming, diving, and snorkeling.

Gozo has a New Age vibe, as it is rumored by the locals to be an island formed of crystal, and there are many celebrities who have homes there for the privacy it afford them. A famous landmark in Gozo, not featured in the film, is the Azure Window, a huge rock formation, which is a great attraction for tourists, and can be viewed from land or sea. Although the hotel and restaurant in the film By The Sea, were constructed sets, not real places, after visiting these picturesque locations, the outdoor scenes were easily recognizable in the film. My Maltese adventure will continue in the next issue of 25A Magazine. visitgogozo.com, visitmalta.com

The PGA Tour Since 1955 the resort has hosted multiple PGA Tour events on its original 18-hole North Course. In 1966, internationally acclaimed designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. refurbished the course and the South Course was added. “All great courses possess an overall mood or rhythm that engenders feelings of anticipation mixed with nostalgia in most players when they reflect on the course,” Jones explains. “For me the hallmark of a great course resides in a golfer’s ability to remember and visualize all the holes after playing the course once.” Among the world-class tournaments held here were the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic, the Kaiser International Open Invitational and several Champions Tour events. In 2010 golf legend Johnny Miller took part ownership in the resort and was tasked with refreshing the two championship courses. He also added a teaching area and a driving range. The PGA Tour returned in October 2014 with the Frys.com Open, which is scheduled again for October 2015 with the option for 2016.

Wonderment in arizona Sedona and Phoenix Sparkle

N

By Gwen Wunderlich

o other state features such a diverse scenic landscape. Mention Arizona, and tourists have instant visions of cactus and hot arid desert. It is true the Arizona desert is amazingly beautiful with the most dramatic sunsets in the world. Located in Northern Arizona we began our adventure in Sedona. Noted for its mild climate, vibrant arts community and soaring red rock formations that cradle an array of resorts, spas, art galleries and boutique wineries, Sedona exists at an impossible intersection of soul-nourishing desert and pampered lavishness. We checked in at The Hilton Sedona Resort, which was draped in a cool blue and gray color palette with custom contemporary furnishings that invite guests to relax and reflect. Before we could fully settle and unpack our bags, we were already on our way to Verde Valley Wine Trail. Located in beautiful Northern Arizona, the Verde Valley Wine Trail invites wine enthusiasts to experience a destination rich in history, beauty and the production of exquisite Arizona wines. We visited five wineries with six different tasting rooms that offered a variety of skillfully crafted wines to satisfy any wine taster’s palate. Every winery has its own unique personality and distinct wines for visitors to discover at each stop along the Wine Trail. When we finally returned we had a delectable dinner at The Grille at Shadowrock. A destination restaurant with a southwestern menu and mouth-watering

desserts. We particularly enjoyed the chilled shrimp and avocado cocktail, the seared salmon and the “too tall” carrot cake. By the way, there’s a dog friendly patio with a beautiful scenic view of the golf course and you can have your dessert served to you as you gather around the cozy fire pit. Adventure awaited us when we rose from our cozy bed the next morning. After an herbal tea overlooking the sites from our patio, we set off for a private red rock off-road jeep adventure. Whether you're seeking rugged adventure, Native American history and culture, nature, geology or panoramic vistas, there is a tour for you. We recommend trying Pink Jeeps exciting “Broken Arrow” Tour. To calm us down afterward, we headed to eforea, which is tucked away inside the Sedona Athletic Club at Hilton Sedona at Bell Rock. eforea was created with the idea in mind of restoring body and soul. Complete with whirlpool tubs, saunas, steam rooms and clothing-optional sundecks that offer views of the green mesas and red rocks that surround the resort, we quickly slipped into a plush robe and relaxed on chaise lounges in Stillpoint, a tranquil oasis reserved for guests receiving treatments. After our High Desert Renewal massages, where cedar and sage blended together were used to ground us as we were cleansed, polished and wrapped leaving us both hydrated and balanced. We curled up with a blanket, took on the views and sipped on some cucumber water.

Scenes from Phoenix

After two days in Sedona we were headed off to Phoenix, Arizona to the Arizona Biltmore. Rising above the Camelback Corridor, the Biltmore keeps guests busy with two exceptional golf courses, an award-winning spa, seven tennis courts and multiple swimming pools. On the inside, the Biltmore maintains its Gilded Age feel, with the lobby encompassing hardwood floors and low lighting, and guest rooms sporting leather furniture and Southwestern-style design elements. Before the sun even began to rise, we dropped our bags and set out for an awe-inspiring adventure at the Sonoran Desert launch site. Here, hot air balloons drift through the turquoise blue skies over some of Phoenix’s most beautiful sites. We were treated to chilled champagne, seasonal fresh fruits and a southwestern vegetable quiche as the balloon was inflated. As we gently left the earth, we were amazed at how light the balloon felt. During the approximate one-hour flight, there were unobstructed views of the desert and its surrounding beauty, great for capturing gorgeous Instagram photos to share. Our pilot even pointed out roadrunners and coyotes and Lake Pleasant. If you’re craving fresh interpretations of old favorites, local ingredients and outstanding flavor, bring your appetite to Frank & Albert’s restaurant at the Biltmore. For lunch we decided to eat at the Biltmore’s signature restaurant where art embraces architecture and creativity marries cuisine. Hearty dishes and Phoenix favorites are offered in this inspiring restaurant. We

recommend the wild mushroom pizza that has truffle goat cheese, onion, balsamic reduction and arugula. After this light fare, we headed to the award-winning Spa Biltmore. A calming destination that invigorates spirits and awakens senses, we were able to bring balance to mind, body and spirit through authentic modern and traditional spa therapies and beauty treatments. For an incredibly indulgent experience we suggest the Jewel of the Desert treatment that activates and nourishes energy centers using seven luxurious oil blends. Relax and breathe in the essence of each aromatic oil as they are introduced with reflective key words and varying degrees of touch. The warm oils and alternating pressure leaves you feeling re-energized and refreshed. For dinner we headed to Wright’s at the Biltmore. Wright’s offers fresh cuisine that reflects an innovative culinary style characterized by fresh, local ingredients that are hearty, yet elegant, using the freshest ingredients from boutique farms across the country – including herbs from the chef’s garden outside the dining room. The menu changes frequently to reflect the flavors and aromas of the season. If you have the chance to splurge, then have some of the finest golden osetra caviar and smoked gnocchi. The perfect dish with complementary squash, mustard greens and Parmesan. Arizona without a doubt is one of the most breathtaking and thrilling trips we have ever taken. As we were promised, it was exotic yet it felt like we came home with an abundance of scenic beauty. We will certainly be back. March 2016 | 101

The MANY Facets of Grandeur Global Luxury Manufacturer Reaches a Hospitality Milestone

T

By Stephanie L. Howitt

ranscending 550 feet into Midtown Manhattan’s skyline is an illuminated fixture of unmatched opulence and sophisticated refinement. The Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York is the first hospitality venture for the legendary crystal maker, Baccarat.

This march will culminate the first anniversary since the debut of the ‘House of Baccarat’. The global flagship, a glistening jewel box in the sky whose sharp detail captured the essence of a legacy, symbolizes that the continued lifestyle expansion of this luxury brand is not only an organic transition but one with unlimited potential. As Baccarat's decorative arts have been subtly present within the backgrounds, further enhancing the art of entertaining for centuries. For over 250 years, its crystal stemware has graced the lips of dignitaries, delicately complemented the presentation of fine cuisine, and illuminated the faces of aristocracy during the delightful interchange of repartee. Since first commissioned on October 16, 1764, in Lorraine at the royal decree of King Louis XV of France, the beautiful crystal works have served as a visual representation of perfection, one which celebrates life and 104 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

timeless tradition while echoing the detail of French craftsmanship. The Baccarat signature is one of tireless passion in tandem with an increased strive for excellence and concentration of technical skill. The company is one of the most decorated in France. Many of its artisans have earned the celebrated title of Meilleurs Ouvriers de France, the highest honor bestowed on extraordinary talent. Similar to the curated collections housed within the adjacent Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The evolution of the brand which has spanned centuries can be contributed to the progressive design collaborations by the notable Georges Chevalier, Salvador Dali, Ettore Sottsass and Philippe Starck. All of which have allowed the company to transition effectively into modernity without compromising its founding ethos. Capturing the iconic identity of a brand steeped in tradition, with intentions of bringing it to habitable fruition was no easy feat. Never the less, it became the passionate undertaking of Barry S. Sternlicht, Chairman & CEO of Starwood Capital Group and Founder of the affiliated SH Group, a hotel brandmanagement company which manages the daily operations of The Baccarat Hotel & Residences.

To create a hospitality haven worthy of the worldrenowned Baccarat insignia, Sternlicht took a page from its predecessor and enlisted the help of top industry experts, each of whom brought a uniquely distinctive design perspective with a universal execution of detail. The result, was a contemporary rendition of a Parisian hôtel particulier , reinforcing the oldworld charm of the brand's heritage with modern adaptations. Successfully contributing to the alterations of the metropolitan skyline from the 20th and 21st centuries, leading architectural and urban planning firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), devised plan for the 50story tower utilized the natural light and expansive cityscape views with the construction of a seamless linear structure, composed of inset glass and metal accents. Referencing the movement of light as it interacts within the purity of crystal, the firm enhanced the facade with an application of a 125foot wide prismatic glass curtain, manipulating the light as it refracted and reflected through the series of corrugated facets. The translucency of the materiality creates exterior intensity while showcasing the ambiance of interior illumination from street level. Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier, the design duo behind the Parisbased design firm of Gilles & Boissier led the design development of the interior at The Baccarat Hotel, which included grand salonstyle public spaces displaying custom furnishings and unreleased work from Baccarat archives. The 114 elegantly appointed accommodations, make reference to the brand's decorative arts as they are steeped in a carefully chosen color palette of ivory, platinum, champagne, and steel. Each level, ranging from guest rooms to suites evokes the intimacy found within a private pied-à-terre. All of which, feature floortoceiling windows, handpainted panels, custom jacquard linens by Mascioni, whitemarble bathrooms, with Baccarat crystal accents throughout. Exquisite attention to detail from product to service, inroom modern amenities include state of the art technology, featuring a onetouch control device, a concealed flatscreen within smoked mirrors, products by Perfumer Maison Francis Kurkdjian, and delicate delights from Maison Ladurée i n Baccaratred themed minibars. Select Baccarat suites also include La Mer beauty products, complimentary champagne, fresh flowers, by-appointment hair blowouts, and dedicated hosts, in addition to the full range of onsite amenities. The extensive art collection which supports the interior enhancement of The Baccarat Hotel & Residences was curated by the discerning eye of art connoisseurs, Stéphanie and Frédéric Chambre. Visually representing the natural progression of the Baccarat brand, the collection is composed

of mixed media work dating from the 18th century to present day. The artwork throughout the premise is in conjunction with largescale installations and the work from eleven additional artist collaborations; each tapped to commission a piece with the inclusion of the iconic Harcourt stemware. All held within illuminated glass vitrines dispersed throughout the interior, to shape corridors and provide initial inspiration upon entry of guest rooms and suites. Architectural Digest 100 member, Tony Ingrao, led the residential design of The Baccarat Residences. The 60 residences from floors 1849, range from one to five bedroom units with fullfloor and duplex configurations. The architectural details match, if not arguably surpass, the level of craftsmanship set forth by Baccarat artisans. Each residence features Baccarat lighting fixtures and hardware, custom tailored kitchen cabinetry made from lacquered ebonized walnut with stainless steel and polished nickel accented frames, sixinch white oak plank custom flooring and bathrooms of Lido white marble throughout. Residents have on-demand access to the worldclass hotel amenities so that they may retreat from the urban jungle with the assistance of a chauffeured vintage Citroën DS. Safely within the confines of the Spa de La Mer, comprehensive fitness studio, or 55' cabanalined pool before enjoying an afternoon filled with Mariage Frères specialty blends brewed by the tea sommelier. Located through one of the three doors at The Baccarat Hotel & Residences lies their signature restaurant, Chevalier. A modern interpretation of the Parisian Brasserie developed by interior designer, Stephen Stills. Overseen by Michelinstarred executive chef Shea Gallante, Chevalier offers a contemporary take on the French culinary experience. Before concluding the night at The Bar, an opulent setting in shades of crimson for selected wines and crafted cocktails served in a vast array of Baccarat crystal. The Baccarat Hotel & Residences changes the way one evaluates luxury hospitality. Its ability to create an expansive narrative experience, temporarily alters one's lifestyle, transporting guests into the world of Baccarat through its artisanal service and impeccable style. This newly evolved lifestyle brand will continue to translate on a global scale with project developments in Rabat, Morocco, Doha and Dubai, proving that the concept of luxury is universal.

The Long Island Music Hall Of Fun A Classic Night

I

By Jackie Martling

n 2006 The Powers That Wanted To Be asked me to co-host the first annual Long Island Music Hall Of Fame Awards with local legendary WBAB morning drive DJ Bob Buchmann. The venue was the recently renovated Patchogue Theatre and I was tickled to be part of the event.

I love Bob. I originally thought he was the first radio guy to put me on the air on a regular basis. It turned out I (well, recordings of my jokes) had been on with Los Angeles’ morning drive’s Rick Dees for quite a while before I joined Bob. That, of course, is another chapter. Bob had occasionally heard “Use Your Finger! (516) 922-WINE,” my telephone joke line, on Brian Battles’ WBAB Saturday show and thought it might work well as a daily feature, so he called me and we worked it out. From 1981 until 1984, at 8 a.m. every Monday through Friday, Bob and his morning drive partner Peri Appollo would tell their listeners they were calling my joke line. They’d actually call my home number, and each morning I’d have a special message for them that was (barely) clean enough for radio. As the station was WBAB, I referred to it as “Wuh-bab.” I’d call Bob Buchmann “Throb Wuh-Buchmann” and Peri Appollo “Perrier.” 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The message would include jokes of all kinds as well as me insulting Wuh-Bachmann’s intelligence and making whopping allegations about Perrier’s sex life. When I’d get noticeably fouler towards the end of the message, Bob would set off an explosion sound effect and go into the week’s number one song. I have a 1982 letter from him thanking me, stating that calling me every morning had helped boost their 8 a.m. hourly rating by 40%. By 2006 I had recently finally released a not-even-a-smidgen-anticipated CD of my music, and I was bowled over when I was introduced at the Patchogue Theatre and walked out to the show’s house band playing the song that instigated the CD, “And I’m Thinkin’ About You,” the theme song to my brand-new Sirius satellite radio show, “Jackie’s Joke Hunt.” There was a huge cast of characters at the event. It was the first time I met Alec Baldwin and Johnny Maestro (of “The Crests” and “The Brooklyn Bridge”), and it was big fun to run into people I had met along the way, such as Felix Cavaliere of “The Rascals,” Randy Jackson of “Zebra” and Rick Mango of “Jay & The Americans,” among scads more.

I was so excited that I was going to see Little Anthony and the still-living original Imperials perform … it had been decades … and an unexpected huge kick to find out they not only knew who I was but were big fans. I mean … I slow-danced to 1959’s “Tears On My Pillow” long before I could get a boner, and then the song became a staple in my high school band’s repertoire. Yeah, I had the balls to sing it in “The Sonics” from 1962-1966. And now I was hanging with the actual guys. Yow.

And then in between the ballbreaking I perk up my ears and I hear the unmistakable strains of “Tears On My Pillow.” My God. What a quandary. Over there on stage was what was to be the highlight of my night, and here I am ensconced in a group I could never have even imagined. What to do? And then Billy’s ears perk up, and he says, “That’s Little Anthony, man!”

Being the first awards show these folks had done, they knew little about length and pacing and there was wayyy too much copy in the monitors and wayyy too many awards. It seems if you had ever flown over Long Island you qualified and everybody you can name was inducted except for me and Tonto. Much went wrong … I mean a lot … and I was a hero that night as I went out to quell the soon-rapidly-thinning crowd as best I could about five times. Hey, the jokes always work. So the show’s progressing and suddenly I’m backstage in a four-way conversation with the great Leslie West of “Mountain,” Letterman’s Paul Shaffer and Billy Joel. It was surreal.

Without hesitation Billy turns and quickly waddles over to the right wing of the stage, with me of course right behind him. In no time we’re standing there shoulder-to-shoulder, about twenty feet from the guys as they’re crooning like angels. As we’re basking in the innocence of 1950’s harmony and monstrous waves of nostalgia, Billy turns to me and says, “It doesn’t get any better than this, man.” I said, “What are you talking about? You’re only with Jackie The Joke Man. I’m with Billy Joel.”

Jackie's Joke Box Follow Jackie on Twitter for a daily joke! @JackieMartling The wife's sitting on the deck drinking a glass of wine. Her husband comes out with his newspaper, sits down and starts to read. She says, "I love you. I love you so much. I don't think I could get through a day without you." The husband puts down the newspaper and says, "Is that you talking, or is that the wine talking?" She says, "It's me talking. To the wine." A moth goes into a podiatrist's office. The podiatrist says, "What's the problem?" The moth says, "Neither of my parents loved me, I don't think any of my brothers and sisters even like me, and I have no friends." The podiatrist says, "You don't need a podiatrist, you need a psychiatrist. Why'd you come in here?" The moth says, "Because the light was on." A guy says to the guy sitting next to him at the bar, "I think I'm gonna divorce my wife. She hasn't spoken to me in over two months." The other guy says, "You better think it over. Women like that are hard to find." A guy stumbles into a bar and says, "Gimme a drink." The bartender says, "I can't give you a drink, you're too drunk." The guy says, "If I'm so drunk, how come I can see that one-eyed cat walking in here?" The bartender says, "That cat's leaving." A woman walks into a drug store and says to the pharmacist, "I need to buy some cyanide to kill my husband." The pharmacist says, "Lady, I can't sell you cyanide to kill your husband. I'll go to jail, you'll go to jail, you're crazy." The woman reaches into her purse, takes out a picture and hands it to the pharmacist. It's a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife. The pharmacist says, “You didn't tell me you had a prescription." March 2016 | 107

Shohreh Aghdashloo Dazzles On and Off-Screen

S

By Ryan Wilk

hohreh Aghdashloo's career as an actress has taken her to many different places both on and off camera. Born and raised in Iran, Shohreh started her career at a young age (in her 20’s) by appearing in films made in her home country. Around the time of the Islamic revolution, Shohreh moved to England and used the time to complete her bachelor’s degree. She didn’t fully commit herself to acting until moving again to Los Angeles in 1987. Since making it big in Hollywood, Shohreh's career has taken her to many different places all over the globe. Most recently, for her upcoming film “The Promise,” Shohreh traveled to Spain (near Madrid) to film on location in the mountains for three months. Shohreh's current project, the mystery science fiction drama "The Expanse," catapults her two-hundred years into the future playing the powerful character 'Christjen Avasarala,' a tough and intelligent politician who is the protector of mother Earth.

108 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Anyone looking at Shohreh Aghdashloo’s IMDB page will find a common thread among the characters she plays. This thread is composed of strong, powerful women and “The Expanse” is no exception. The series is based on a popular series of novels by James S.A. Corey that chronicles the uncovering of a conspiracy to destroy humanity. The first season of "The Expanse" recently finished airing on the SyFy Channel in the U.S. and has already been renewed for a highly anticipated second season. This exciting new TV series and character are a perfect fit for Shohreh, since she has loved sci-fi since her childhood and and loves movies like “The Matrix.” Shohreh's new film project, the historical romance "The Promise," continues the trend of having Shohreh playing strong female characters. “The Promise” is an epic love story that is set shortly before the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and Shohreh will be seen portraying the character 'Marta' - the strong-

willed, fiercely protective mother of 'Michael' (Oscar Isaac's character). The script was written by Academy Award nominated writers Terry George and Robin Swicord is directed by Terry George. Also starring in this film is Christian Bale, Charlotte Le Bon, and Eric Esrailain. Shohreh admits to being especially excited for the release of this film, because she feels that they created something truly special and inspiring. Early on in her career, Shohreh got her first big break in the film “House of Sand and Fog, because the filmmakers were looking for a relatively unknown Iranian actress. Since then each role that Shohreh Aghdashloo has taken on over the years has become more diverse. Each new listing on her IMDB page adds a chapter to the story that is her life. Her journey has taken her from her roots in Iran, to England, to the United States and

she continues to travel all over the world shooting movies. Each new project Shohreh takes on not only leads her to interesting new physical locations, but also to worlds that can only be visited in the imagination. As Shohreh continues to dive deeper into the TV series "The Expanse" during the TV series second season, who knows what environments we will get to explore with her next? H

er Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, the only daughter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll, was the guest of honor at a fundraising luncheon on board the Queen Mary 2 while it was docked in Brooklyn. Lord Admiral Michael Boyce was also a guest speaker at the event, which raised funds to help in the restoration of Admiral Lord Nelson’s ship, The Victory.

There were over one hundred guests attending, and following a champagne reception, the princess shook hands and spoke to each one individually. At the luncheon both the princess, who is patron of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and the admiral, thanked guests for their support, and spoke of the historical significance of restoring The Victory, which is dry docked in Portsmouth, England.
